STEVE MILLER BAND and PETER FRAMPTON F O RD CE N T E R | J U N E 12 | 7 P. M.

Following on the heels of the mega REO/Styx/Don Felder concert a couple months back, the Ford Center will play host to another big package tour on June 12 featuring two music legends with decades of hits between them, including "The Joker," "Take the Money and Run," "Space Cowboy," "Jet Airliner," "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Show Me the Way," "Do You Feel Like We Do" and so many more. That's right, Steve Miller and Peter Frampton have joined forces for the concert of the summer, putting the class in classic rock, if you will. Fun fact: between the former's Greatest Hits 1974-78 and the latter's Frampton Comes Alive! alone, these two industry giants have sold over 25 million albums. Not to mention their songs have been blasting out of car radios for years, functioning as the soundtrack to so many lives as each new generation discovers this timeless music. Hard to believe, but the Beatles had just released the much heralded Revolver when the Steve Miller Band first formed way back in 1966. Two years later, SMB debuted with Children of the Future, a nod to the blues/psychedlic influence of the British invasion making a mark on the charts at the time. Several more albums in a similar vein followed in quick succession but it wasn't until 1973's The Joker - which signaled a shift towards a more melodic rock sound - that Miller and the crew

truly caught fire. Three years later, the multi-platinum Fly Like An Eagle cemented the band's position at the top with no less than three huge singles, including the title track, "Take the Money and Run" and "Rock'n Me" - all of which were included on Greatest Hits 1974-78, a milestone collection that continues to sell boatloads some 40 years later. But Miller wasn't done churning out hits by any means. Case in point, 1982's "Abracadabra" worked its new wave magic by going top five in numerous countries. On the flipside, Peter Frampton has carved out an amazing career as well, beginning with Wind of Change in 1972. It was the British-born singer/ guitarist's debut solo release after leaving Humble Pie, a mismatch of wizard musicians often cited as the original "supergroup." Several more

studio albums followed featuring songs (like the aforementioned "Show Me the Way," "Baby, I love Your Way" and "Do You Feel Like We Do") that would soon become monster hits thanks to their inclusion on 1976's Frampton Comes Alive!, one of the most popular live recordings of all time. Indeed, its legacy remains intact despite - or perhaps because of - today's general preference for, and reliance on, computerized production. Thankfully, there's still a big audience for organic melodies and performances and so Frampton has continued to write and tour over the years, most recently releasing Acoustic Classics in 2016. TECH N9NE PLANET TOUR 2018 O L D NAT I ON A L EVEN T S PLA ZA | JU N E 11 | 7 :3 0 P.M .

INDEPENDENT HIP-HOP PIONEER COMING TO OUR GALAXY FOR RARE TRI-STATE APPEARANCE For nearly two decades, rapper Tech N9ne (aka Aaron Dontez Yates) has done things his way, operating outside of the corporate music industry via Strange Music, an independent record label cofounded with business partner Travis O'Guin in 1999. The 46-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, native is known for his hyper-speed, percussive vocal delivery - like a swarm of words seemingly fired from an automatic weapon - and intelligent, often confrontational lyrics that mostly sidestep today's typical hip-hop talk of money and more money. And yet he's still managed to sell over two million albums despite refusing to play the game. Nowhere is that more evident than on "Don't Nobody Want None," the lead single off Planet, released March 2. The track harkens back to the break dancing days of the 80s complete with analog synths and beats that pay homage

8|

to Afrika Bambaattaa's legendary "Planet Rock." But over the top of this nostalgic soundtrack, Tech N9ne spews rhymes two and three times faster than anyone from that era, slyly marrying the past with the present something you'll most likely never hear on a Drake record. And that's why Tech N9ne has not only endured but grown stronger through the years, rightfully earning the respect of his peers, many of which have featured in the ongoing Collabos Series on key albums such as 2009's Sickology 101 and 2017's Dominion and Strange Reign. Guests to date include contemporary rappers like B.o.B, Big K.R.I.T., Cee Lo Green, Eminem, Game, Kendrick Lamar, T-Pain, Trae tha Truth, Snow Tha Product, and Wiz Khalifa plus rock singers and bands like System of a Down's Serj Tankian, Slipknot's Corey Taylor and

The Doors. The sheer diversity of these collaborations proves that the underground success of Strange Music is no fluke; rather, it stands as a blueprint for up and coming artists looking to exist outside of - yet still be a part of - the mainstream. Truly, it's a nearly impossible balancing act but one that ensures long term relevance if achieved. In addition to tracks off of Planet, expect to hear killer cuts from throughout Tech N9ne's career, including "Straight Out the Gate" (featured on the WWE 2K18 soundtrack), "Worldwide Choppers," "Einstein," "Am I Psycho" and many, many more. Special guests are Krizz Kaliko, Just Juice, Joey Cool and King Iso. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com. The ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

AREA BUSINESSES BANDING TOGETHER TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE NEWBURGH COMMUNITY POOL It's been four long years since the last Newburgh Pub Crawl, but the popular 21 & over event is back with a bang to help raise money for the Newburgh Community Pool which was permanently closed back in January due to damages caused by the extreme winter weather. That leaves only one Warrick County pool available to families for the hot summer months, a facility located in Boonville. Not surprisingly, the cost to replace the damaged pool is steep. But events like the Pub Crawl should help bring attention to the need for a new facility and hopefully inspire others to donate to a worthy cause. Indeed, everyone can agree that it's very important for kids to learn how to swim, especially with the Ohio River bordering the area. To get the financial ball rolling, eight Newburgh businesses are banding together for the Pub Crawl: American Legion Kapperman Post 44, Archie & Clyde's, Cricket's, Enigma, Knob Hill Tavern, Pizza Chef, Showplace Family Entertainment Center and Wings, Etc. There will be shuttle buses running (be sure to get your route map) between these participating locations starting at 2 p.m. Tickets for shuttle wristbands are $10. Patrons of the event can start at

10 |

their favorite location and then hop on the shuttle beginning at 2 p.m. and head out to the next destination. Along the way there will be food & drink specials, giveaways, samplings AND live music at most locations to keep the party rocking. All funds raised through the Pub Crawl will be used as matching funds for pool grants that require matching funds. Everyone who participates in the event on June 10 will be a part of this very important community effort to provide the families of Newburgh with a brand new facility. FYI: Wristbands purchased before June 10 include a raffle entry so be sure to get yours early for a chance to win. Don't miss the much-anticipated return of the Newburgh Pub Crawl! Tickets are available at the Historic Newburgh office and at participating businesses. For more info, visit the Newburgh Pub Crawl on Facebook.

ROMP FEST 2018 O W E N S B OR O, KY | JU N E 27- 30

RISING STAR BILLY STRINGS TALKS CONSTANT TOURING, IMPROVING AS A MUSICIAN AND MORE Western Kentucky's premier music festival makes its welcome return to scenic Yellow Creek Park on June 27 with headliners Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs topping a fantastic lineup of bluegrass, country and folk musicians, including Sam Bush, Leftover Salmon, Rhiannon Giddens, The Travelin' McCourys, Doyle Lawson and rising star Billy Strings. But what makes ROMP truly special is the event's communal vibe. Attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam throughout the weekend as well as take part in artist-led workshops. Additional offerings at ROMP Festival include organic and farm-to-table food vendors, craft vendors featuring Kentucky Proud products, art installations and professionally-led children's activities. You've been blowing up big time. Are you adjusting to all the attention? I don't know - all it is to me is that it seems like I'm awful busy [laughs]. Indeed, you've been touring quite a bit for 2017's Turmoil and Tinfoil. Yeah, we've been touring steady since... well, we've always been touring steady. It seems like we just never stop - and I'm excited about it because right now, like I told you, I'm packing up and getting ready to fly out to Colorado. I've only been home for like a day - just long enough to get my laundry done and head back out. I mean, we do 200 gigs a year. That seems borderline nuts. [Laughs] I agree, we're crazy. We've proven it to ourselves - we are absolutely insane. And everyone in the band still likes each other at this point? Oh, yeah, I love those guys. The band -

12 |

speaking of them - is Billy Failing on banjo, Jarrod Walker on mandolin and Royal Masat on bass. Those are my homies and we've been romping around for a little bit together. The band is sounding great - I'm really proud of those guys and I'm proud of what we've been doing out there. Yeah, we're really a live band, and I think you've got to come see us to really understand what it is that we're doing. It's hard for me to explain what it is - even while I'm up there doing it. We just kind of get our instruments in our hands and all these people come into the room and see us and I get really nervous. All things considered, it would seem that you'd be pretty sure of yourself at this point. I don't know...I mean, we're just always trying to get better and better - there's never a ceiling when it comes to music. You work as hard as you can and all of a sudden a year goes by. You say to yourself, 'What have I been doing this last year

JUNE 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

There's a real buzz surrounding bluegrass musician Billy Strings at the moment and his Saturday evening set at ROMP is sure to be a festival highlight. We caught up with the breakneck guitar picker as he was packing for a sold-out gig at Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Colorado. - have I improved as a musician?' And I think you always do improve, but it's hard to notice in the moment, because you're so wrapped up in a gig or a performance. It's hard to notice the progress unless you kind of grab an album that you played on from two years ago and really listen to what you were playing then. But you know, we're hard on ourselves. Post-ROMP, what's on the horizon for you and the band? We're going to Mexico soon and next year we might be going overseas for a bit. It's all really exciting stuff for me, man. I've never been out of the country before. I mean, it's super cool that I've been all over this country. I haven't been to all 50 states yet - I haven't been to Alaska or Hawaii. But hell, it's neat that I've driven across Nebraska and I've seen all that country side. I'm just trying to work really hard to keep it growing. For tickets and more info, visit rompfest.com.

W.C. HANDY BLUES and BARBECUE FESTIVAL

H E N D E R S ON, KY | JU N E 13- 16

DELBERT MCCLINTON AND THE PAUL DESLAURIERS BAND HEADLINE ANOTHER GREAT LINEUP OF MUSICIANS INCLUDING FESTIVAL VETERANS - AND LOCAL FAVORITES - THE BEAT DADDYS Nearly three decades on, Henderson's W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival has grown to become one of the largest free events of its kind in the nation, averaging 50,000 people annually. And for good reason. You see, in addition to a great lineup of musicians that attracts blues fans from all over the region and beyond, this very special community gathering is famous for some really good eats - that's shorthand for the best BBQ the tri-state has to offer, the perfect food to complement the high energy performances happening in beautiful Audubon Mill Park. Speaking of high energy performances, get ready for four days and nights of explosive blues, highlighted by the onetwo punch of the legendary Delbert McClinton and Montreal's Paul DesLauriers Band to close out the festival on Saturday evening. Leading up to that magical final stretch, you can catch sets by Davina & The Vagabonds, Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band, Sugaray Rayford, Davy Knowles and many more, including local favorites The Beat Daddys. Led by guitar virtuoso Tommy Stillwell and powerhouse vocalist/rhythm guitarist Larry Grisham, the band is rounded out by the deep bass of "Big" Jon Rochner and muscular drums of Steve Bennett - a rock-solid rhythm section if there ever was one. Formed out of the ashes of The Phonz, an 80's power-pop group that Grisham and Stillwell toyed with back in the day, The Beat Daddys have been serving up tasty blues originals and multi-genre covers for over 30 years - give or take some down time and shuffling of members. In 2015, they released Hoodoo That We Doo, a scorching collection of songs that captured the band at the height of their powers. Opening track "These Chains" not only set the tone for the album but according to Stillwell, provided an unforgettable W.C.

14 |

JUNE 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Handy moment:

"Back in 2015 when we released Hoodoo and we started off the show with a pre-recorded tape of the intro of the album [the sound of chains hitting boxes] and then came out and segued into the live performance of the song over the PA... Everybody just dug the heck out it - that was a real high energy set." But that was just one of The Beat Daddys' many memorable performances at W.C. Handy. In fact, the band played the very first festival - around 1990 - before it was moved to the park. They backed up the very talented Browne Sisters and got such a kick out of the whole thing that, as Grisham tells it, they couldn't wait to do it all again - even if it meant groveling a little: "For the second one, we had to beg to be included but we just wanted to be a part of such a great community event. We didn't ask for a dime to play - they put us on a trailer bed and we did our thing." Still, the guys didn't have to grovel for long. In fact, according to Stillwell, by 1997 they were being filmed: "In '97 when we played, we each had a camera on us and then on the audience. It was a really nice production - KET was in charge of that. It's really cool because public broadcasting has the rights to pick it up and go national with it. Every time that it would air somewhere, sales would go up with it. I would get CD requests from New York, North Carolina, LA - it was really nice." Stay tuned for more of The Beat Daddys in the July issue of News 4U. For the full W.C. Handy performance schedule, visit handyblues.org.

THE FIDDLE PLAYING HALF OF KARI & BILLY ON HER UNEXPECTED CONNECTION TO SHRINERSFEST, MAKING HEADWAY IN NASHVILLE, WRITING MUSIC FOR TV AND MORE

CATCH KARI & BILLY @ SHRINERSFEST THURSDAY, JUNE 28 7 P.M.-MIDNIGHT!

AN INTERVIEW WITH KARI NELSON-ARNOLD OF KARI & BILLY

When Kari Nelson-Arnold got wind that ShrinersFest organizers were interested in hiring her and her significant other to play at Evansville's annual community festival by the riverfront this summer, it seemed more than a coincidence. That's because the fiddle playing half of the popular Nashville duo Kari & Billy - unbeknownst to said organizers - was a direct beneficiary of the services that Shriners Hospitals for Children offers, receiving wonderful care as a teenager to help correct a debilitating spinal curvature known as idiopathic scoliosis. In fact, Nelson-Arnold was required to wear a full torso TLSO Boston Back Brace from ages 13 through 18 and underwent two surgeries - the first to insert two Harrington titanium steel rods along with several hooks and screws in her back and the second to address some recurring pain. But she never let any of her medical issues stop her. The budding musician not only continued to play fiddle but also remained on the high school swim team, removing the brace for practices and competitions. And it was all made possible by the generous financial assistance of Shriners, a "blessing" for a family from small town northern Minnesota. Upon graduating high school, NelsonArnold flipped the script, electing to move to Nashville and pursue a music career rather than attend the University of North Dakota as originally planned. It was a gamble of sorts - one that naturally gave her mother pause - but ultimately, the whole family supported this bold decision and that's where we pick up the story...

You arrived in Nashville in 2006, fresh out of college. Not many people have the courage to just dive right in like that. It was kind of crazy for me to even do it, because honestly, if you had asked me growing up, that wasn't the sort of thing that I was thinking about doing - I'm usually not an extremely independent, strike-outon-my-own type of person. But when I graduated high school in May of 2006, my mom and I went on a trip to Nashville - it was kind of my graduation present. I'd played violin since I was seven and I had gotten involved with a band in my high school years that played at, like, local VFWs and stuff like that. And I always played music with my sisters - we were always a musical family. So I was used to performing, but I'd never really thought about moving to Nashville or any place like that and pursuing music. But when my mom and I went on that trip, it was pretty much my first real experience with Nashville. We went and experienced Broadway downtown and all the honkey tonks next door to each other. And from there I was just kind of hooked, I guess. I was able to get up with my fiddle on stage with a lot of the bands - they let me sit in. And I thought, 'Hey, I think I can do this.' So after the trip I started thinking seriously about moving there. How long did it take to make some headway musically speaking? Once I arrived, I was super blessed to be able to start right away with a lot of gigs. Because of some of the people that I had sat in with when I first visited there, all I had to do was go downtown, sit in a couple

more times and say, 'Hey I'm in town now, so if you need a fiddle player...'. It was a little rough at first because when I moved there, fiddles weren't as common down in the Broadway honkeytonks - because, as you know, we mostly play for tips down there and they [other musicians] kind of saw it as splitting the money yet another way. So, I kind of had to convince them that I could pull my weight and make sure they weren't losing money hiring me. And once I did that, the work just really started to flow.

And when did things get to the next level? After playing downtown for a few years, I got a few studio session work gigs - you know, demo work. I wasn't in on the master sessions yet, because that's a pretty tight clique in that town. But through that I met some different people and ended up getting called to play a gig with John Rich - it was kind of right after he had split ways with Big Kenny for awhile and they were both doing their own thing. So I got hired for that gig and I played with him for about a year and a half. That was a really neat experience as well - I got to play with a lot

of different artists through that, including Trace Adkins, Gretchen Wilson; I did some music videos with Gretchen and Big Kenny and John Rich and that sort of thing. After that is when I met Billy and we formed our duo, Kari & Billy. So since about 2011, we've been fullon pursuing that. It's been really different for me, because I moved to Nashville to really just be a player and kind of back-up the artists. And now I've had an opportunity to, I guess somewhat, be the artist - something I don't feel like I am, but... Billy does all the writing for our original songs and he does a great job of that. Yeah, we play all our shows together; we do a lot of duo stuff where we perform acoustically like we're doing out here in Bryce Canyon in Utah at the moment. And we also play with a band and travel the country.

Do you and Billy have particular career goals in mind at this stage? Yeah, we definitely do have goals. Our avenue I think is going to be a little more grassroots, a little more through the back door, you might say. We do not have a record deal at this point - or a publishing deal - though we've recorded three albums and released two singles to radio. But we have been playing for the last several years, writing music and producing it on a show called Thirteen on the Outdoor channel. It's interesting, because obviously it's a hunting show which Billy loves because he's very into that lifestyle; he's been an avid bow hunter for years, so for him to write music about it is just natural. Being involved with that show puts us on TV as the two of us in small music videos every week. And so in a sense we have been able to build out of that demographic some as far as our fan base goes. We've been able to sell a lot of that music through CD Baby and iTunes and things of that nature. So continuing that avenue is a way that we'd like to see our goals achieved - which would be just getting our music out there more. Obviously, we would love to see some radio success, but it's very political and very tough to do that on your own. So in the meantime, we've definitely got our hands in a few other cookie jars, you might say. For more info, visit kariandbilly.com.

TAILGATE REVIVAL

- KICK ASS COUNTRY BAND

Formed just a little over 18 months ago, Tailgate Revival has emerged as one of the area's most indemand bands, filling a country music void with a set list that includes both originals and boot-stomping hits from the 90’s to today. JOSH PIETROWSKI & COREY EDWARDS - OWNERS @ DOC'S SPORTS BAR

More affectionately known as Big Salmon and Big Cat, respectively, Cory Edwards and Joshua Pietrowski are all about Evansville. They came together recently to buy and curate Doc’s Sports Bar (1305 Stringtown Rd. in Evansville), a shrine to local, college, and professional sports, cold beer, and great bar food. The endgame? Creating countless sports-related memories among the community. Yes, Doc’s certainly lives up to the name “Evansville’s Gameday Palace.” Just three blocks from Bosse Field, this gem is open seven days a week. For more info, visit Doc's Sports Bar on Facebook. DUSTY BARN DISTILLERY 6 8 6 1 CA R S ON S C HOOL R D. | MOU N T VERNON, IN | 8 1 2 -4 5 4 -0 1 3 5

As the son (and son-in-law) of small business owners, I appreciate our area’s mantra of eating and shopping local. Mount Vernon’s Dusty Barn Distillery is that ethos personified. Started by Dr. Duane Kuhlenschmidt and his family, they’ve spent the last few years proving that size doesn’t matter when it comes to making quality whiskeys. Not only is this hidden gem of Posey County locally owned, everything is locally sourced: The corn, rye, malted barley and walnuts are all grown on land owned by the Kuhlenschmidt family or their employees, and the water comes from a natural well on the property. (Of course, it’s also distilled on site.) The required sugars are a byproduct of the process, and even much of the material used in the building is reclaimed from local sources, such as the sheet metal on the outside and the wood and stone on the bar top. I was fortunate enough to get a tour on two separate occasions: First, by "Doc" (as Dr. Kuhlenschmidt is known by patrons) himself, and the next night by distiller Charlie McPherson. I won’t do them injustice by trying to explain the process, so I recommend stopping by and getting Charlie’s grand tour (as well as one of his signature Old Fashioneds). Of course, even the best ingredients don’t matter if the final product is subpar. Not only are these aquae vitae above par, they’re possibly the best I’ve ever tasted. Each product represents a slight variation on the ingredients and/or distillation process. The clear Hoosier Moon is made from corn and skips the aging process; after coming out of the still at around 130 proof (or roughly 65% alcohol by volume [ABV]), it is diluted with distilled water to around 90 proof and bottled. It offers the appearance and subtle corn undertones of traditional moonshine without the burn (or risk of blindness). The more traditional Casked Corn whiskey starts similarly but is aged in charred white oak barrels. When asked how long it’s aged, Doc simply

26 |

JUNE 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

replied: “When it’s ready.” They periodically test the product until it meets their desired flavor profile. The bourbon undergoes a similar process, but for much longer; the grain bill also incorporates rye and barley while still exceeding the 51% corn requirement of bourbons. Their most recent creation, Nocino liqueur, is a lower alcohol content and features various spices in addition to its secret weapon: Black walnuts, which are harvested on the Feast Day of St. Giovanni (June 24th). Last but far from least is my personal favorite Doc’s Rye. This is one of the few whiskeys I can actually enjoy neat or on the rocks. With almost no burn and a sweetbut-not-too-sweet touch on the palate, this is a drink even those not fond of liquor can enjoy. The tasting room serves many purposes. Not only can you sample the products or enjoy full drinks, they also sell bottles of the good stuff and merchandise. There are numerous shirts, hats, coasters, and glasses to show your support. Whether you like your whiskey neat, on the rocks, or in an Old Fashioned (complete with various flavors of homemade bitters) or Mint Julep (with mint leaves you pick yourself), Dusty Barn Distillery is required drinking for both casual quaffers and alcohol aficionados. - Jonathan Gluff For more info, visit Dusty Barn Distillery on Facebook.

NEWS4U JUNE 2018 | CUISINE & DINING

IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock

June marks the beginning of strawberry season. When I was a kid my much older sister used to take me to the u-pick patches and tell me that it was a fun game to see how many I could get. I call it child labor, but she calls it, “bonding time.” I am still a believer that fresh strawberries are the best summer fruit. They just scream, “Welcome, spring… finally.” My idea came from one of my favorite vegan cookbooks, Thug Kitchen. I go through times that I crave cornbread and with this strawberry season looking good, I thought this would be a good choice. Plus, if you are into the “Chicken and Waffles” craze, these waffles are perfect! This is a two-step recipe that will make four huge waffles! Start with the syrup. Find more recipes on Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book: The Best is Yet to Come

CORNMEAL WAFFLES WITH STRAWBERRY SYRUP Serves: 4-6 people

Ingredients for Syrup: • • • •

1 pound of fresh strawberries 2-4 TBS sugar, depending on how sweet you want your syrup. I like mine a little tart. ¼ cup orange juice ½ tsp vanilla extract

Directions for Syrup: • • •

Cut the strawberries into bean sized pieces. Throw them into a saucepan with the rest of the ingredients and warm it all over at medium-low heat. It’s going to look like it’s not doing anything. Be patient and stir occasionally and do not freak out that it needs more liquid. Just let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. When the syrup thickens, and the liquids evaporate, turn the heat off.

Ingredients for Waffles:

• • • • • • • • • •

2 cups almond or your favorite non-dairy milk 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1 ½ cups cornmeal 1 cup wheat flour 2 TBS brown sugar 1 ½ TBS baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/8 tsp cinnamon 2 TBS olive oil Cooking sprayleaves

Directions for Waffles: • • • • •

28 |

JUNE 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

While the syrup cools, make the waffles. Heat the waffle iron. Mix together milk and vinegar in a small glass and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon until they are all combined. Make a crater in the in the center of the dry mixture and gently add the milk mixture. Whisk until there are no lumps or dry spots in it. Coat the PREHEATED plates of the waffle iron with cooking spray so they won’t stick. Pour in some batter and cook until golden brown according to your waffle irons directions. Coat with your home-made syrup.

TED TROLLEY | Lamasco Bar & Grill owner Amy WordSmith is a dogged supporter of our community, always looking for new ways to bring people and local businesses together. And to that end, she's hit a home run with her latest project: TED Trolley, a fun, safe form of transit that connects Franklin Street, Main Street and the Haynie's Corner and Waterfront districts. In other words, it encourages patronage of Evansville businesses and exploration of the city's burgeoning nightlife. Seems simple enough, but in truth, it took years to become a reality. According to WordSmith, after the initial idea was tabled for a long stretch, the wheels were finally put back in motion roughly 18 months ago and from that point forward, it took a full-on team effort to make the TED Trolley dream come true. Funding for the project was secured through a community crowd sourcing grant - headed by the Franklin Street Events Association and the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville - with nearly $60,000 raised to purchase the trolley. After a new vinyl wrap job from Signarama Evansville (sponsored by Lefler Collision & Glass), TED made its long-awaited debut on May 4, shuttling passengers

ALL ABOARD: There's a brand new way to connect with Evansville's burgeoning nightlife

back and forth via the Double Map App. It's the same technology currently utilized by METS and allows passengers to know exactly when/where the trolley will arrive for pick-up. Word-Smith envisions people initially taking an Uber or other car service to one of the areas on the TED line and then enjoying an evening of fun, worry-free rides back and forth between Franklin, Main and the Haynie's Corner and Waterfront districts. It's a great way to experience all of the entertainment that Evansville has on offer each weekend and brings everyone together for a communal adventure - a win-win for all involved. Eventually, TED will connect Evansville's two large playgrounds - Mickey's Kingdom on the riverfront and Stop Light City off west Franklin. But Word-Smith is already looking beyond that, keeping her eye on possible expansion of the trolley system to other parts of the city. But first the community needs to get on board, so to speak, and support this fun, safe form of transit. So be sure to download the Double Map App and get your yearly pass today!

JENNA CITRUS PAINT & THE BODY

2016 EFROYMSON BRIDGE YEAR FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENT CONTINUES HER ARTISTIC EVOLUTION WITH NEW SHOW

E VAN S V I L L E M U S E UM B EGLEY A RT GA LLERY | JUNE 2 8 - JULY 3 1

One of the tri-state's most free-spirited artists, Jenna Citrus delights in exploration, always searching for new ways to combine her two passions: painting and photography. When we last spoke with the Mt. Vernon native back in 2016, she had just been awarded the very prestigious Efroymson Bridge Year Fellowship, an annual $10,000 grant provided by the University of Southern Indiana to a promising art, photography or design student in preparation for graduate study. It afforded Citrus the opportunity to further develop her portfolio without being bogged down by real life concerns - like money, for instance. At the time, she was fully invested in her Hand Painting Series which involved pouring paint all over a subject's hand and letting it drip down onto a canvas below, creating a spectacular effect. Now Citrus has taken the next logical step in her artistic evolution.

"I've worked with several people to create these works of art on their body and capture them using the photographic process. This is the first time many of these prints will be displayed," explains Citrus, detailing the specifics of Paint & the Body, a brand new show set to debut at the Evansville Museum Begley Art Gallery on June 28. And the results are every bit as dramatic as the Hand Painting Series, producing stunning images that must be seen up close and in person to fully appreciate the sheer breath of colors applied to the human form and filtered through Citrus' lens. Opening night of the show will include a meet and greet with Citrus in the Evansville Museum Gift Shop from 6-8 p.m., a chance for attendees to pick her brain regarding things like inspiration and technique. Appetizers and a cash bar will be available.

The Evansville Museum is located at 411 SE Riverside Dr. . For more info, visit jennacitrus.com.

NEWS4U JUNE 2018 | MUSIC

stories FROM THE STAGE An ongoing series featuring tri-state musicians

The Union Gospel Tabernacle in Nashville, Tennessee, opened in 1892, financed by a saloon owner by the name of Thomas Ryman. A would-be preacher-heckler at a local tent revival, Ryman instead converted to Christianity and went on to establish this indoor space for more revivalists. Debt eventually necessitated booking non-religious events at what was to be called the Ryman Auditorium, "The Mother Church of Country Music,” where Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, Dolly Parton, and Hank Williams, and later, bands like Coldplay, Foo Fighters, and Counting Crowes played. Too many legendary artists and groups to list all performed on this stage, but there is one more worth naming here. “Tall” Paul Blake of Evansville, Indiana, played the Ryman. He’s shy to talk about it; he’s almost ashamed to admit he earned the opportunity. He would tell you that he didn’t deserve it, that it was dumb luck. However, if you’ve seen Paul Blake perform or heard his album, Hungover and Heartbroken, with his band, The Pall Bearers—an apt name, for sure—you recognize the well-executed marriage of country, rock and pure passion that caught the ear of country music legend, Marty Stuart. Blake was four when he first met Stuart at a Whirlpool employee appreciation show. Both Paul and Marty’s fathers worked for the manufacturer. Paul had toy guitars and would dance around to country videos on The Nashville Network with such joy that his parents let him make his way up front during that show. Security guards, fearing he would get trampled, escorted him back toward his parents when a lady intervened and allowed Paul to stay with her for the duration of the performance. That lady was none other than Marty Stuart’s mother; her act of kindness and recognition of Paul’s love of music launched a bond between the families that led to many more concerts, meet and greets and conversations. Stuart began to see something special

FEATURING PAUL BLAKE

in young Blake and encouraged his parents to get him into playing mandolin and guitar. Over the years, Paul honed his talents, wrote songs and was invited to sound check a few times with Marty’s band, The Fabulous Superlatives. Eventually, Paul got up the courage to show Marty some of his songwriting. “I had put together about four or five songs. I gave him the CD, and he called me about a week later and left this really nice voicemail telling me he liked the songs (but that) I needed to turn my vocals up. That way, everybody could hear what I was saying...(laughs). It gave me a huge confidence boost.” Three months passed and Paul was at an Expo Show put on by Stuart featuring Eric Church, Porter Wagoner, Charlie Pride and others at the Ryman. Marty saw Paul and brought up a song from the demo CD. Paul was shocked. Toward the end of the night, Marty would call him up to play it. At only eighteen years old, Paul performed in the exact spot as so many legends. What he told me about that night is pure Paul Blake: critical, selfeffacing, humble and hilarious. He recalled, “Once I got done playing the song, it was like an out of body experience because I was just standing there. Marty came over and said, ‘Great job,’ and I just stood there. Marty was like, ‘You’re done,’ and I just walked backstage.” Later that night in Stuart’s dressing room, “Marty read me my rights,” Paul laughed, about the stage etiquette of featured guests. Paul was able to make Marty understand that it was not a lack of respect that made him linger a bit awkwardly, but quite the opposite. Paul Blake had stood there stunned, not reveling in his glory but in reverence to the greatness that haunted that very spot. - Lindsey James Williams Paul Blake continues to write and perform with The Pall Bearers. For more info, visit paulblakemusic.com and hear his music online on 91.5 WUEV’s Case of the Blues.

NEWS4U JUNE 2018 | ENTERTAINMENT

with Gavin Gaddis I love podcasts, which makes getting people into them all the harder. In an algorithm-run world where the same 50 shows from the same handful of producers stay iTunes chart-toppers long after they’ve worn out their welcome, one has to do some digging to find good shows worth listening to. Beyond those shows raking in hundreds of thousands of downloads a day are scores of awesome smaller podcasts that take some digging to find. So every month I’ll be bringing four bitesized reviews of the best podcasts out there!

THE AMELIA PROJECT (BI-WEEKLY) The Amelia Project is a delightfully charming, fiction podcast portraying recorded interviews with clients of the mysterious titular company. Any amateur can fake their death and quietly disappear; the AP exists to help wealthy clients go out in style before starting anew. Each episode sees a new interesting client (from a cult leader to an artificial intelligence) being interviewed by a nameless Interviewer who’s as easily bored as he is delighted by a cup of cocoa sourced from a single café in Paris. The subject is macabre, the humor is delightfully well-written, the production values are through the roof. ameliapodcast.com

GIRL IN SPACE (MONTHLY) This is one of the best sci-fi fiction podcasts running today, hands down. The show is presented as if you are parsing through recordings of a meticulously-kept audio diary maintained by, well, the girl in space. She’s lived alone in a decaying science vessel - Cavatica - for years recording journals, doing science and pondering the purpose of life. That is, until a fleet of ships representing the corporation that built Cavatica come to reclaim it and the secrets of its relationship with a nearby star named Ra. A small cast and strong writing make Girl In Space a show I regularly revisit to savor small details. girlinspacepodcast.com SONG SALAD (WEEKLY) Each week hosts and music nerds Shannon and Scott sit down and use their mythical salad spinner to produce a random genre of music which they must use to create an original song about a random Wikipedia topic. The genres they encounter are as outlandish as they are fascinating. From math rock to commercial jingles, they listen to examples, goof off while researching the Wikipedia topic and then come back when they’ve produced their final product. Shannon’s lyric writing and Scott’s musical arrangements always deliver something smile-worthy, if not a genuinely entertaining song. A delightfully addictive show with a fun hook and funnier hosts. songsaladpodcast.com WONDERFUL! (WEEKLY) The newest podcast from powerhouse podcast celebrity Griffin McElroy, Wonderful! is a delicious palate-cleanser of positivity. Each week he and his wife Rachel sit down and take turns talking about two things they find to be wonderful, presenting research they’ve done on that topic. From the history of trick-or-treating to They Might Be Giants, this couple talks about some amazing things. The chemistry of the McElroys as they goof off and lay bare some of their quiet pleasures in life makes Wonderful! a rare entry into the podcast zeitgeist without any cheap shots or unnecessary negativity. Perfectly sweet without crossing the line into schmaltz. maximumfun.org/shows/wonderful

KIDS WISH NETWORK NOTHING BUT NET: Henderson's "Nic" Williams meets his basketball idol Kids Wish Network scored big for Wish Kid Nicholas "Nic" Williams from Henderson, KY, who dreamed about meeting legendary basketball star Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. Nic has ulcerative colitis, causing long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in his digestive tract. It also continues to affect his joints and skin. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life threatening illnesses, found out that Nic has a passion for basketball, and is greatly inspired by Stephen Curry. With this very special wish, Curry continued his streak of 3 pointers, meeting our Wish Kids Nic, Mikel and Chase for a fun day of gaming and family togetherness. Nic was going to have a ball! NBA star Stephen Curry said, “Have a great time, enjoy life and each other’s company… we’ve got some fun to be had!” Nic loved spending time with Curry, having pictures taken together, getting a jersey signed and playing alongside him in minigolf. “I finally got to meet my idol who I look up to all the time,” said Nic. “He was really funny and down to earth. It was great spending time with him.” The basketball superstar brought along extra cheer with some members of the Golden State Warriors Dance Team to play video games and take photos with the kids. They had an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience with their hero – it was a game changer. Nic had a very special gift of appreciation for Curry - a personalized leather devotional with his name and a Bible passage inscribed on the cover. Nic also received an amazing memento from Curry… all Wish Kids received a customized gift package including an Under Armour backpack, JBL headphones and treasured sneakers in their size from Stephen Curry’s line of athletic shoes. Curry’s hospitality continued, graciously autographing the sneakers for Nic.

During the wish, Nic and his mom enjoyed accommodations at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pleasanton at the Club and dinner at Zephyr Grill. It was a momentous wish for Nic… it was also his first time flying in an airplane. “It was really special watching Curry’s interaction with Nic,” said his mom Kathy. “They were playing putt-putt golf and they had this moment where they did a fist bump. It’s wonderful knowing he’ll always have these memories. Kids Wish Network went above and beyond in everything… thank you from the bottom of my heart.” “We’re always so thrilled to make a dream come true – especially when it’s meeting someone who greatly inspires our Wish Kids,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai. “We’re so appreciative to Stephen Curry for creating so much happiness that our kids will always remember.” - Courtesy of: Kids Wish Network Kids Wish Network is a national charitable organization dedicated to infusing hope, creating happy memories, and improving the quality of life for children with lifethreatening conditions and those struggling with life-altering situations. ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

PEANUT

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

MEREDITH: Meredith is a female cat estimated to be around 4-years-old. She came into the shelter with a pretty significant neck injury that is healing very nicely! She spent several weeks in a cone, learning to eat and move around with it on. She was a trooper and now she’s almost back to her normal self, ready for a home. She is the VHS’ 2nd-longest resident cat. Meredith’s $40 adoption fee includes her spay, microchip, and more.

KING: King is a male red & white pit bull mix. He lived with another dog in their previous home (who has already been adopted.) He can be a shy guy and doesn’t present well in his kennel, but he warms up quickly once he is out of his kennel and has the opportunity to snuggle! He and his sister were found in a house with their deceased owner who had passed away. King’s adoption fee is $110 and includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and heartworm test.

Kim Goodman has always had several dogs around horses, too. She currently resides in Celestine, IN, on a sizeable piece of land with her husband Ted who keeps tabs on their poultry farm, cows, hayfields and more. Goodman, unfortunately, is unable to move around much these days due to a serious car accident she was involved in many years ago that crushed her pelvis and caused major back problems. Because of her general immobility, her pets are her life. So after losing Sweet Pea, her beloved Boston Terrier of 15 years, Goodman decided to take a look online and came across a Pit Bull/Terrier mix named Shock located at the VHS. She just had to see this little runt of a pup and drove to the shelter the next morning a full two hours before they opened to ensure first place in line. "We went in to see her and it was love at first sight," Goodman says. "I brought her home and she was so small so my husband and I decided to rename her Peanut." Peanut may be the runt of the litter but she's reportedly very smart, quickly learning to sit, shake with both paws, speak and stay - when she feels like it, anyway. She also loves Jeep rides, playing Frisbee and going for walks with a friend's German Shepherd named Heidi. Another successful adoption!

REGINA GEORGE: Regina is a 3-month-old female Lionhead bunny from the “Mean Girls” litter. She has several brothers & sisters up for adoption too, and all of them are currently partially or fully litter-trained! Her $40 adoption fee includes her spay & microchip, which is over a $175 value.

MOORE EXPLORES! Nashville, Tennessee WITH JASON MOORE

"WHEN IT

COMES TO

ADVENTURES - MY SON

IS ALWAYS GAME."

I have two kids and a wife – and my family on a regular basis participates in activities as a Group. The Moore Family EXPLORES a bunch. However, it’s not as often that we allow for One on One time with the kiddos. This is my encouragement to take the opportunity when you can. A daddy daughter date with dinner and a movie is wonderful and she’ll appreciate it forever plus you’ll always cherish the memories. When it comes to adventures – my son is always game. The boy and I decided to venture to Nashville recently – he loves museums and I’m always happy to oblige when it comes to learning for fun. After a couple hours on the road, we found ourselves at the Adventure Science Center.

WOW. It was a cool day, so the place was crowded… a great sign that fun was to be had. Priced affordably – it was very expansive with a wide variety of things to see and do from Space to History, Dinosaurs to How Things Work, and Information on the Human Body to Virtual Reality and 3D Printers. If you’re in the neighborhood – give it a go. Our next stop found us in Greece! No, I’m kidding… but we were on the footsteps of one of the coolest structures in

"IT’S SURPRISING THAT OF ALL MY TRAVELS AND ALL OF THE

TIMES I’VE BEEN THROUGH MUSIC CITY THAT I HAVEN’T BEEN TO THE PARTHENON BECAUSE HONESTLY, IT’S IMPRESSIVE."

Nashville that doesn’t have a Batman Building nickname… The Parthenon. It’s surprising that of all my travels and all of the times I’ve been through Music City that I haven’t been to The Parthenon because honestly, it’s impressive. Built in Centennial Park as a part of the Tennessee Centennial Celebration in 1897, the project is a no joke full-size replica of the original. The exterior is worth the visit alone, but the inside (there’s a full museum, tours, gift shop, and art exhibit) plays host to a gigantic statue of Athena – goddess of wisdom, handicraft, and warfare. And you wouldn’t want to meet her on the battlefield. This gal is HUGE! The interior was ominous and calming at the same time… if that’s possible. The crowd snapping selfies was quiet and respectful of the mood in the room. We asked for a recommendation on where to find a great local pizza, and the answer was unanimous AND close by. Double win!!! We traveled a couple miles to Slim & Husky’s – where the line extended out the door. Literally. With a bouncer. No joke. She was nice though and welcomed us with a smile. Per the standard of this trip so far, crowds gathered means promising rewards. The pies are ordered in, you guessed it, two sizes: Slim or Husky. Grab a recommended recipe off the wall or build your own… get a cold drink (I tried the house lager) and you’re all set.

THE WRITE STUFF

ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

JUNE IS "PRIDE MONTH." HOW CAN THE LGBT AND RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES LEARN TO APPRECIATE EACH OTHER MORE? Too many people think that it is impossible for LGBTQ people and the church to even acknowledge each other’s existence, let alone appreciate each other. But that is false. LGBTQ people have been part of the church since the church came into being. There are a handful of verses in the Bible that seemingly prohibit homosexuality. There are far more verses about gluttony, charging outrageous interest, dietary restrictions, and other matters. These verses, however, are hardly ever mentioned, while the handful of verses is exalted over all others. As a Christian, I look to Jesus and while he was silent on the subject of homosexuality, Jesus had a soft place in his heart for the “underdog” – the person or the group that others maligned and mistreated. Jesus saw them as equally created in the image of God and, therefore, worthy of being respected and treated as such. Jesus engaged with women, children, those caught in sinful acts, corrupt politicians, radical political devotees, lepers, the sick, the dying, and many others that the rest of the world condemned. In my tradition, we sometimes refer to Jesus as “the Word of God.” In part, that means that I must read Jesus’ life with as much care and intention as I read the written word. And that means I am compelled to live and love as Jesus did. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

with Jonathan Gluff Tragically Hip (or “Try Hard With a Vengeance”) Over the last decade or so, “hipster” has become the popular pejorative against those who like anything remotely outside the mainstream (which itself is an oft-abused buzzword). Like many en vogue insults of an era, it was borne of insecurity and resentment, perhaps due to this subset's penchant for smugness. Normally, I’d defend this vaguely defined “hipness,” having many friends who could fit this description. However, I have to complain about one of this subculture’s trends I’ve seen developing for a few years now: An obsession with VHS and cassette tapes. I get it; nostalgia’s a powerful drug. And just like other powerful drugs, it has a nasty habit of clouding one’s judgment. It’s the only rational explanation for this phenomena, because there is absolutely no good reason to fawn over media formats as objectively inferior as these two. Lest you think I’m being too harsh, or becoming a cranky old man merely yelling at kids to get off his lawn, consider these facts: Tape degrades over time, both from regular playback and chemical and/or electromagnetic breakdown. The cost of manufacturing tapes is orders of magnitude higher than disc-based formats (i.e. CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray). Storage space is limited, and hardware is scarce and often can

only be bought secondhand. (When was the last time you saw a VHS camcorder in any electronics store?) Even stereos with tape decks are increasingly rare. That’s not to say older technologies are inherently worse. For instance, while vinyl shares certain downsides I’ve previously mentioned (namely the limited storage and potentially wearing out due to the nature of a needle running through the groove), it can still produce a great sound through a good stereo setup. Wax has a warmth that digital formats can’t match and clarity that cassettes can’t compete with. And with the advent of 180 gram vinyl, durability is less of an issue now than ever. Smartphone cameras’ resolutions and features now rival that of standalone units. USB microphones continue to increase in quality while price decreases, and many are compatible with phones. With this - and that the ratio of smartphone ownership being greater than 1:1 - in mind, portability and price is no excuse. It’s tempting to view bygone eras through the lens of nostalgia, but fixating on the past impedes progress. Change may not always be great, but the past isn’t necessarily better, either.

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE with Marisa Patwa

Set a date for Ocean’s 8 I have been wishing for a female version of Ocean’s 11 ever since I first saw the George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt hit in theaters back in 2001 when I was 7-years-old. And I guess the birthday candles worked because the Sandra Bullock led allfemale cast of Ocean’s 8 is hitting theaters June 8. For those unfamiliar with the Ocean’s franchise, it usually involves a large group of men - the original Ocean’s 11 was released in 1960, Oceans 12 was released in 2004 and Oceans 13 in 2007 - who all come together in order to steal a large amount of money. The movies are great because of the suspense and the contrast of the various characters' personalities, which is why I'm thrilled that we are going to see the same formula but coming from the amazing ladies in Ocean’s 8. At the start of the film, Debbie Ocean - who is played by Sandra Bullock and is the sister of George Clooney’s character from the previous films, Danny Ocean - has been locked inside a prison cell for almost six years, planning the most elaborate heist of all time: stealing a 150 million dollar necklace at the annual Met Gala.

The star-studded cast includes Anne Hathaway as famous actress Daphne Kluger, who is wearing the luxurious diamond necklace at the Met Gala; Rihanna, as cool hacker Nine Ball; Mindy Kaling as jewelry designer Amita; Cate Blanchett as Debbie’s fabulous second hand Lou; Sarah Paulson as suburban mom Tammy, who was once a criminal; Helena Bonham Carter as couture fashion designer Rose; and Awkwafina as robber Constance, who has quick hands. This movie is sure to be a smash hit and something all audiences can enjoy because of the fun plot, amazing cast of characters and, of course, the gorgeous outfits from the fake Met Gala (in case you're already sick of the photos of the crowns, feathered angel wings and bedazzled crosses from the Heavenly Bodies-themed Met Gala this year). And although this movie technically features the women banding together to commit a crime, I still think there is an incredibly strong message of female empowerment. So go see this bound-to-be-awesome movie filled with a talented cast of women who are going to undoubtedly fulfill the girl-squad-of-your-dreams goals you didn’t even know you had.

AND THE WINNER IS... BRAUN

The anti-establishment sentiment that swept Trump into office two years ago remains strong after Jasper native Mike Braun trounced two sitting congressmen to win Indiana's GOP Senate primary. Braun received 40% of the of the vote while Luke Messer and Todd Rokita couldn't even garner 30%. In fact, out of the last three GOP Senate primaries, two of these were won by the antiestablishment candidate. Darmstadt resident Richard Mourdock upset incumbent Richard Lugar in 2012. However, Mourdock would eventually lose to Joe Donnelly due in part to a controversial rape comment he made in one of the debates. Donnelly will now face-off again with an antiestablishment candidate. Some say he is one of the most vulnerable Democrats up for reelection this year, but the Dems are hoping this "blue wave" we keep hearing about will make the difference. Both candidates have problematic track records that will be examined. Braun reportedly voted in the Democratic primaries up until 2012. Thus, he could have voted for either Clinton or Obama in 2008, an issue brought up by Braun's primary opponents. Donnelly, on the other hand, voted for the failing Obamacare when he was a congressman and most recently, he voted against Trump's tax bill that has motivated businesses to give their employees bonuses and has created jobs. The key will be voter turnout and whose base is mobilized. Low voter turnout would probably help Donnelly. But if Braun can get his base mobilized, he'll be Indiana's next senator. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

THE CLAPPER ORIAH ENTERTAINMENT

Ed Helms plays a professional audience member in this indie film by Dito Montiel. The Clapper follows three characters through LA, showing off the odder side that the city has to offer: eccentric gas station owners, elderly men dressed as Spiderman who sell tickets to bus tours, and the not so glamorous side of late night television. Alongside his friend Chris, played by Tracy Morgan, Helms' character, Eddie Krumble, goes from set to set, playing an engaged and eager audience member. They make enough money to get by, that is until Eddie gets outed by a late night talk show host. Eddie becomes a late night phenomena over night, which makes it impossible for him to keep his job as an anonymous audience member. The root of this story is Eddie's burgeoning relationship with a young gas station attendant named Judy, played by Amanda Seyfried. After losing his job he uses his late night air time to help find the woman he loves, and spends most of the movie parading around LA on camera like one of David Letterman's Stupid Human Tricks. All in all, the film has an endearing charm to it, even if it leans pretty heavily on the Pixie Dream Girl trope and bumbling white guy trying to fix “it,” whatever “it” may be. As with The Clapper, it remains to be explained. - John Thurgood

THE WEEK OF

HAPPY MADISON PRODUCTIONS In The Week Of, Adam Sandler plays a father burdened with the monumental role of giving up his daughter's hand in marriage. As one would expect from a Happy Madison production, the task is far from easy. The hotel is a mess, the banquet hall gets canceled the night before the wedding, and there are bats. Through all of it, Sandler's character, Kenny, pushes forward with a stiff smile and the uncompromising love he has for his daughter. And to a surprising degree, The Week Of does deliver on this promise, proving that the last gesture a father has to give his daughter is a wedding she will remember. The hallmark of this film, however, is the relationship between Kenny and the groom's father, Kirby, played by Chris Rock. The more screen time Adam Sandler and Chris Rock have together, the better. As these two actors age, their relationship on screen ages too, giving them a sweet kind of platonic intimacy that isn't often seen in film. Even if their characters are a little heavy handed, their playful back and forth gives the viewers of The Week Of a peek into a strong and healthy relationship between two men of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds without exploiting the fact that they come from different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. BLUES WITH BRAGIN MEG WILLIAMS Maybe Someday Self-Released

Upstate New York native Meg Williams moved to Nashville last year to pursue a music career. After spending a year honing her craft on stage as a solo act as well as with a full band, Williams comes out with the EP Maybe Someday. The first track, “Not My Problem,” starts off with a funky bass line that sets the tone for the rest of the song. The upbeat tempo contrasts nicely with Williams’ heartfelt vocals about a relationship with problems. “Bad Lovin’” deals with more heartache, but it also allows Williams to shine during the guitar solos. “Little Bit of the Devil” takes a heavy rock turn musically and discusses a woman who marches to the beat of her own drummer and refuses to play by society’s rules. “Maybe Someday,” the EP’s title track, deals with the difficult times in life but maintains a belief that the promise of a better tomorrow keeps us going and persevering during the hard moments. The heavy guitar riff on “You Let Me Down” fits well with the heartbreaking lyrics. “I Feel A Heartache Coming” ends the EP well with great harmonies. For more info, visit megwilliamsmusic.com. - Paul Bragin

ALLY VENABLE BAND Puppet Show Self-Released After the successful release of her 2016 debut album, No Glass Shoes, Texas blues guitarist Ally Venable returns with Puppet Show. The first track, “Devil’s Son,” begins with a loud guitar riff that sets the tone well for the rest of the album. “Bridges to Burn” features a special guest appearance by Venable’s mentor, Lance Lopez. Venable’s soulful vocals at the beginning of “Backwater Blues” complement the harmonica from guest artist Steve Krase nicely before easing into a good combination of guitar and harmonica playing off each other. Krase returns on “He Caught the Katy” where he provides a solid harmonica base for Venable’s guitar. Venable’s heart-wrenching lyrics about loneliness in “Comfort in My Sorrows” match her melancholy guitar in a way eerily reminiscent of John Mayer. The steady guitar work in “Survive” works well with the lyrics about not giving up during difficult times. Eric Steckel’s keyboard work in the song also fits in very nicely. Elijah Owings’s drums and Bobby Wallace’s bass on “Sleeping Through the Storm” provide the perfect matches for Venable’s guitar work at the end of the album. For more info, visit allyvenableband.com. - Paul Bragin A Case of the Blues is on Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on 91.5-FM WUEV, online at wuev.org and on the WUEV app.

BREAKING BENJAMIN Ember Hollywood Records Breaking Benjamin has always been “that one band with the song in Halo 2” to me. They exist, people seem to buy their albums, yet I can’t name a single song they’ve produced besides that one song they wrote for Halo 2 back in 2004 (a cursory Google search informs me it was "Blow Me Away"). The band has been on ice for a few years and is back with, if I’m not mistaken, an entirely new band except for the titular Benjamin Burnley. And they have three guitarists instead of two. How revolutionary. Tone-wise Ember feels like that same 2004 BB but for the high school freshman wearing a heavy metal t-shirt who wishes they were a little more “metal.” Take an old album of theirs, dip it in cheesy early-90s heavy metal tropes (heavy on the drums, screaming every couple of lines, light intros followed by heavy drops) and you’ve got this weird assemblage of music that’s scarily easy to tune out. If one was a fan of the band in their formative years and wanted a new album that leans a smidge darker… Ember is a serviceable album. Gavin Gaddis

CARDI B Invasion of Privacy Atlantic/KSR In a world where there are thousands of memes making fun of people using airhorns to seem cool, it takes a hell of a rapper to use an airhorn unironically in a beat. Cardi B not only pulls this off, said airhorn is in the first song. One fair point of warning for anyone coming into Invasion of Privacy blind, this isn’t safefor-work mainstream Eminem rap. This is the kind of rap that terrified the stuffy conservatives I was hearing on talk radio as a kid, the kind of people claiming “there will never be rap oldies stations.” I dare anyone to make a radio-safe edit of "Get Up 10." The song list for this album on Wikipedia is ridiculously long due to each song featuring numerous producers and as many as 17 credited writers. Every line feels intentional, perfectly slotted in with everything else. Overall, it’s a great album but there are some choice moments where the flow hits a perfect string of syllables that flow so perfectly I have to rewind to hear it again. JANELLE MONÁE Dirty Computer Bad Boys Records I’m a little late to the Janelle Monáe party, as Dirty Computer seems to be part of a three-album project with some short videos (including a 40 minute short film for one single). Usually there’s a certain level of pretentious air to albums that are part of overall multimedia experiences, like a rabid Doctor Who fan who doesn’t consider anyone a “real fan” unless they’ve seen every single episode (and read the novels made of scripts that were never actually produced). Dirty Computer throws all of that pretension out the door by being a damn good album that can stand on its own two legs. The act of listening to this album is fun if only for how fresh it stays throughout. There’s some pop, there’s some funk, R&B, hip-hop, even a little soul, all featuring Monáe’s fantastic voice. This is exactly the kind of album one wants in their car for trips around town with friends. If "Screwed" or "Dirty Computer" come on I am willing to bet good money no friend with good taste will complain. It’s bright; it’s well-made; I’m blown away. -- Gavin Gaddis

THE MESSTHETICS Messthetics Dischord Records In the 15 years or so since Washington D.C.'s legendary Fugazi went on an indefinite hiatus, the four members guitarists Ian MacKaye and Guy Piccioto, bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty - have kept busy, but mostly with kids. Admittedly, it's been a frustrating wait for fans of one of America's greatest live acts and creators of such classic alt-rock albums as 1990's Repeater, 1993's In On the Kill Taker and 1995's Red Medicine. Still, various musical side projects have seen the light of day over time - most prominently, The Evens, a contemplative, stripped-down duo featuring MacKaye and wife Amy Farina. Lally, meanwhile, has released a few adventurous solo albums and Canty has played drums for the likes of former Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould. Piccioto, by all accounts, continues to maintain a relatively low profile.

KIMBRA Primal Hearts Warner Bros. It’s not often I review an album purely based off someone saying “this is a good album” on Twitter, but here I am. Primal Hearts is a pop album from New Zealand singer Kimbra. Frankly, I’d never heard of Kimbra, but now I know I’ve been missing out on an awesome musician. Primal Hearts is a perfect example as to how pointless the term “pop” has become. Pop can mean, well, anything. To properly demonstrate what one is getting into, I’d say Kimbra seems to land somewhere between Foster the People and Lorde on the funky ethereal pop spectrum. You might just find a dose of unexpected nostalgia along the way as well. "Everybody Knows" dips into the toolkit of 1980s to deliver something that musically and vocally is scarily close to a mid-career Michael Jackson single. If you’re looking for some good pop that isn’t the same Top 40 radio repeats we’ve been hearing for years, Kimbra is a great option. 44 minutes of good music with no overdramatic beefs or problematic Twitter activity attached. Gavin Gaddis

Sadly, a full-on Fugazi reunion seems unlikely; however, the band's rhythm section has joined forces with guitar wizard Anthony Pirog to form The Messthetics, a surprisingly powerful - and equally nuanced - instrumental trio. Over the course of nine mind-bending tracks (essentially recorded live with no overdubs), Canty, Lally and Pirog whip up a jazz and prog rock-inspired frenzy that comes down at just the right moments, a la the transition from the heavy riffing of "Serpent Tongue" to the soothing, lullaby-like beauty of "Once Upon a Time." It's a thrilling swing of emotions that's repeated brilliantly with the closing two tracks as the rapid fire of "Crowds and Power" gives way to the evocative sedative that is "The Weaver." It's not a stretch to imagine that this might be what Fugazi would sound like circa 2018 - sans the bark and whine of MacKaye and Piccioto. - Johnny Fletcher

JUNE BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. URBAN CHESTNUT BIG SHARK LEMON RADLER

GOOSE ISLAND MIDWAY IPA

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.75

Think of this one as a session IPA. It pours up an attractive medium copper color with a big, foamy, light beige head. Settling to a light film the brew tracks the glass with subtle lacing. The nose is dominated by a citrus-like hoppiness and faint-but-there pale malts. The flavor mimics the aroma but with more depth and complexity. There you’ll experience citrus and floral hops, spices and pale malts. That said, the finish on the palate could be better. I’d call this one a very good effort and happily have another any time the opportunity presents itself.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A good white head crowns this India Pale Ale during pouring. Citrus notes from the hops used during brewing fill the nose. Tart citrus and bitter hop flavors first come through on the palete and remain during the finish. People who like IPAs should try this one. The low alcohol content makes this a good choice for summer. Pair it with spicy dishes like Mexican food or a variety of Asian cuisines.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a clear yellow beer. It has the sweet hop flavor of some IPAs but I like this one a little better since it does not coat your tongue as some IPAs do. It's pretty easy to drink but I do notice a slight bite in the finish.

DANIEL KNIGHT - 2.5

This seems to be the equivalent of a summer shandy - a light beer mixed with a soda or lemonade. It pours with a big, fluffy head that quickly fades to short then a film. Its color is pale light yellow. The aroma is light and lemon. The taste is mostly on the sweet side with a light lemon mild carbonation. Honestly, this is a pretty boring drink. I know that it’s a particular genre of beer but I’ve had others of these summer coolers that had a lot more going on. You decide.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3 A thick white head rests on this beer. The scent contains a generous amount of lemon. The tartness of the lemon remains with the first sip, as well as some sweetness. When the hottest days of summer arrive, this might work well as a refresher while sitting on the porch fanning yourself. It might also fit in well as an added ingredient in your favorite lemon dessert like lemon bars or lemon meringue pie.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5 This is a clear yellow beer, and I can smell the lemons right away. This beer has a nice lemon flavor but it's not as good as some of the lemon shandys I have tried, even though it isn’t really a shandy. It has an odd flavor at the finish that I can't put my finger on. Overall, it's just a little better than ok.

BELL'S OBERON ALE

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.75

It’s that time of year. This is an ongoing seasonal wheat ale from Bell’s. Wheat brews are generally light, thirst-quenching and easy-drinking. It pours a hazy dirty orange color with a cream-colored head and good retention. The aroma is a funky (in a good way) orange, spices and wheat combination. It’s quite pleasant, actually. The taste, as usual, mirrors the aroma with more nuances. There’s the orange, grains, spices and a medium mouthfeel with that familiar wheat ale effervescence. Bell’s does a great job with this one and it remains one of my favorite wheat brews.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head forms on this beer after pouring it into a wheat beer glass. Wheat scents come first, followed by malt and hops. The wheat flavor and light body make it a good summer standby. People who enjoy wheat beers should drink this during the run from March to August. Pair it with light dishes like seafood, salads, Edam or goat cheese. A previous review garnered a low score; perhaps glassware served as a factor.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a cloudy yellow beer with good carbonation. I like the spice and wheat flavor; I can also taste a hint of fruit. The first time I had an Oberon Ale, I thought it would taste like a Blue Moon. It's somewhat similar but this beer leans more toward the spices rather than the orange flavor of a Blue Moon.

SOUTHERN TIER PEACH GOSE coriander. It pours a rich golden yellow color with a generous but controlled head that settles to a thin white film for its duration. The aroma is moderate yet displays nuances of the peaches and herbs that enhance the recipe. A taste presents an excellent malt, tart, and spice balance that, like the aroma, reveals all the subtleties of this complex concoction. I recommend that you try this one… with an open mind.

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

Here’s a really unique wheat brew. A limited edition, one batch only sour ale brewed with peaches, chamomile, cardamon and

PAUL BRAGIN - 2.5

A generous white head tops this ale after pouring it into a wheat beer glass. The scent profile boasts a lot of spices like cinnamon. Peach flavors hit the tongue

initially, followed by a return of the spices, with peach and sour notes in the long finish. People who enjoy unique beers should try this limited release. It might also work in fruity desserts as an addition to peach cobbler or peach pie.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a clear amber-colored beer. I'm not a big sour beer fan at all and I wanted to score it low, but it is what it is. The cardamom is dominant on the nose and the palate and overpowers the subtle peach flavor. It does have an ABV of 8.3% which the sour flavor covers up.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
