series - on the horizon plus the 30th anniversary of the debut album. Do you have anything planned for the latter? It's funny - someone mentioned that to us and we were like, 'Really? Has it been 30 years? Maybe we should do something.' [laughs] But we really don't have anything planned. We're just all systems go right now as far as getting the new record out.

FEATURING SKID ROW, GREAT WHITE & VIXEN BE AV E R D A M A MPHI T HEAT ER | JU LY 28 | 7 P.M .

SKID ROW BASSIST RACHEL BOLAN TALKS NEW ALBUM, JOEY RAMONE, STAYING OUT OF TROUBLE AND MORE The heyday of the so-called hair bands was a wild time for all involved. From the over-the-top fashions to the glam-inspired music, the eighties were simply unforgettable, a period that still resonates deeply more than 30 years later. Bands like Skid Row, Great White and Vixen were at the forefront of this iconic movement, each known for hook-filled chart hits - i.e., "I Remember You," "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," "Edge of a Broken Heart" - and rocking performances that left audiences screaming for more. Decades later, all three bands continue to tour, often playing to big, multi-generational crowds that just can't get enough of the music that served as a sort of celebratory soundtrack to a never-ending party. And that's exactly what everyone needs right now - a night to kick back and enjoy themselves, free from all the division and negativity out there in the real world. Skid Row bassist Rachel Bolan kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the much-anticipated '80s Rocks the Dam Fest. It's an exciting time for the band right now with a new release - the third chapter of the United World Rebellion

JULY 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

What can you tell us about the new release? Well, unlike the previous two chapters, it's going to be a full-length instead of an EP and we're doing it with Michael Wagener who produced our first two records and Revolutions per Minute. We're all really excited; we haven't worked together in a long time. Just the way the songs are shaping up, everyone's pretty jazzed about it. We're actually starting pre-production on the 24th of this month. We've got to kind of do it in pieces because we're touring so much and just trying to fit it around Michael's busy schedule. This will be your first release with former Dragonforce singer ZP Theart who lives in the UK. How is that working out logistically speaking? When we were making a decision to get a new singer, ZP was on the top of the list, but we were like, 'Man, he lives all the way over in the UK - how is this going to work?' And then we went eight months with another dude and it didn't work out, so we were like, 'ZP, get your ass over to the States for awhile.' [laughs] I'm actually picking him up at the airport in about three hours - he's coming over because we've got a bunch of shows and pre-production. He just lives at my house for a few months at a time and then when we have an opening [in our schedule] he'll fly home. It's just been working out amazing. He contributes to the songs; he's about the band - only the band. He never singles himself out for anything. And we're just like, 'Are you sure you're a lead singer?' [laughs] Switching gears, 1991's Slave to the Grind, the band's second album, remains a firm favorite of both the fans and the band. However, its follow-up, 1995's Subhuman Race, still doesn't seem to get the respect it deserves, especially from you. Oh, so you're the guy that bought it! [laughs]

NEWS4U JULY 2018 | UPCOMING EVENTS

Has your attitude about it changed at all over the years? You know, I don't hate the record - I just don't like the way it turned out. I did like the songs, but the whole recording process was not a good experience for me. That was the first record that we did without Michael Wagener and so it was different. it just didn't have the same fun to it - but there were a lot of factors involved, not just the recording but the state that the band was in and whatnot. I'll listen to it and be like, 'Man, I should have changed this part, we should have done this or could have done that.' But we'll pull a song off of there every now and then and do it live. A few years before that, Skid Row did a great cover of the Ramones' "Psycho Therapy." What do you remember about hanging out with Joey Ramone during the video shoot? It was pretty friggin' amazing. We had met at shows and stuff like that. But it's so funny that you brought this up - it gives me chills because I just found a picture that was taken of Joey and I at the "Psycho Therapy" video shoot and I just hung it in my office two days ago. Yeah, he was such a kind guy, such an innocent dude. Every time he called my house when I was living in New Jersey, I'd be like, 'Holy f*ck, man!' - the 16-year-old me would have been flipping out. But anyway, he'd called with that accent and say, 'Hey, I've written this song. Maybe you guys might want to approach it - do it like a reggae song.' He was always very creative. And then when we did "Psycho Therapy," I sent it to him and he called me and goes, 'Dude, we all just listened to it in the car on the way to rehearsal.' I'm like, 'What?! The Ramones are listening to our Ramones cover!' It was just such a moment in time that we'll never forget. So many bands from your era have suffered personal tragedies, gotten into trouble with the law, etc. Yet, Skid Row seems to have survived mostly unscathed. How? In the past there's been stuff with us that made news, but we're five dudes that...we're not really grown up but we're older. We've got a good sense of not pushing things. None

of us do drugs, you know what I mean? All five of us completely skipped that whole thing - even before we were in bands together. We like our beer - some booze every now and then and a hit. But we don't do any hard drugs or anything. I think that really has a lot to do with our well-being. You don't get into that head space. When I see someone talented fall that way I always go, 'Damnit, there goes another really talented person that's going to waste all their sh*t on doing drugs.' It just annoys me and pisses me off. Back to the new album. Will it pick up where chapter two left off in terms of a hard-driving style? Yes, the new album will pick up from there. You know, we're trying to be true to us and not let, like, bands that we really love influence us - like newer bands. Next thing you know, everything [is written] in B [laughs]. We know when it sounds like us; we know when we might be trying too hard, if that makes sense. We've been writing a lot and what we've written so far sounds a lot like the second chapter. And the big thing is that we're writing with friends from other bands, and we've never really done that before. Everything's been cool - we've just hung out and talked and worked on songs without having to worry about hurting each other's feelings if we didn't like each other's ideas. It's been great. And do you have an ETA for the new album? 2019 - we're just on the road too much. We were thinking maybe we could do it late '18, but we're not going to make that. Let's not even get that in our heads. Well, better to get it right so we don't have another Subhuman Race situation on our hands. I don't want to have to talk to you next year about how unhappy you are with it. [Laughs] Ah, that's great. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit beaverdamtourism.com.

THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER VIC T ORY T H E AT R E | JU LY 20 | 7: 30 P. M.

TOURING MANAGER/PERFORMER STEPHEN MORRIS ON THE TOUR'S REVAMPED SHOW, FAN REACTIONS, CHEST HAIR AND MORE Ladies, if you think it's hot out there now, just wait until July 20 when the Victory Theatre really heats things up with the return of Thunder from Down Under - back by very popular demand, indeed. Australia's legendary troop of dreamy hunks is known worldwide for bringing female fantasies to life with chiseled bodies, seductive dance routines, cheeky humor and boy-next-door charm. Yes, the guys certainly know how to work it, as they say. And their appeal is multi-generational with entire families often coming along for a crazy night of fun - daughters, mothers and grandmothers, too. Even the husbands get dragged along on occasion according to tour manager/performer Stephen Morris, "but they always end up having a great time, because there's comedy in the show and a few other things," he says. Morris kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the much-anticipated show at the Victory. In terms of Australia, there are the obvious silly stereotypes of Vegemite sandwiches, Crocodile Dundee and such. But there's also the stereotype of Australian men being hot. It could be the fact that 90% of the Australian population lives on the coastline. I mean, I'm not going to comment on whether the men are hotter or whatever, but there's a large part of the population that is into fitness and spends time in the sun because they live on the coastline - and not in subzero temperatures in the middle of the country. It's pretty much warm year round

10 |

and it's just a different kind of lifestyle. Have you revamped the show at all from last year - are there new characters, new fantasies, etc.? Yeah, definitely. We get choreographers from all over the globe - from Australia to the ones that work with Justin Timberlake and all that. So, we have a new opening routine; we have a new vampire-themed routine; we also have a new social media routine that people are allowed to film so they can show their friends and tag us on Instagram and all that kind of stuff. We've also added in a different army routine. What's the process for choosing the new recruits like? Picking and choosing is handled by the owners and that kind of thing to see what looks they want on each team. Because basically there's two touring teams and there's a team in Las Vegas. They want, you know, to get a diverse look on each team - and basically, different dance styles on each team as well. On the touring teams, anyway, we have to live with each other 24/7, so they have to make the teams gel and have a good chemistry - and that translates on stage as well. Two words: chest hair. Will Thunder guys ever sport any? Yeah - well, actually, it just kind of goes along with the diverse looks. Some people will have the clean cut image which is more my kind of image and then some of the guys look like they just walked out of the

JULY 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

jungle - they look like Tarzan [laughs]. There are definitely more manicured chests - a larger percentage - but there are still some guys that have a hairier look. Do you ever get to a point where you simply get tired of being fawned over? It sounds exhausting. [laughs] No, we haven't encountered that yet. It's been said before that crowd reactions are the craziest in smaller cities like Evansville. Are you still finding that to be the case? Yeah, definitely. I don't know what it is. Maybe they're more excited to meet us and basically, they've probably never met an Aussie. And then they realize that we're all really nice and approachable guys. And I think that our energy translates onto them and they get even more excited. What's the most common thing you hear from your fans post-performance? After the shows, we often are told by fans that they've been suffering from something or they haven't been happy and that this was the first night in a long time that they've been made to feel completely comfortable and that they had an absolutely awesome time. Sometimes it motivates them to be happy again. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

NEWS4U MAY 2018 | WHAT'S COOKIN'

WING STOP 499 N. GREEN RIVER RD. | SUITE B | EVANSVILLE, IN | 812-909-3445

Evansville is a city well-known for its love of American foods. From international chains to locally-owned (and even locally-sourced) small-scale eateries, there’s no question we love our US-centric dishes. There are few things more unique to the States than Buffalo wings, but with the amount of competition (again, between both local or international), it can be hard for a wing joint to differentiate themselves. Wingstop owners Chris Tooley and Mark McLaurine take pride in standing out from the pack. One of the first things you’ll notice is the difference in atmosphere. Whereas much of the competition has more of a sportsbar vibe (and there’s nothing wrong with that), Wingstop has much more of a traditional restaurant feel. Place your order at the counter, and your food is served at a window just behind it. But regardless of the layout, the food is what’s all-important. I tried seven different flavors of wings, both boneless and traditional as well as sauces and dry rubs. I sampled one of their newest offerings first, the Spicy Korean. Don’t let the name psyche you out - the slowbuilding heat is far from overpowering. The chiles and Sriracha (a personal favorite of mine) combine for a sweet-but-not-too-sweet delight. The Louisiana and Cajun varieties may sound redundant, but they share little in common. For one, the former is a dry rub with notes of paprika and black pepper; there’s just a hint of spiciness to it, but its heat is a step down from even the Spicy Korean. The Cajun, on the other hand, has the heat of a hot Buffalo sauce, with the same buttery tanginess you’d expect. But unlike a standard hot wing, it brings a peppery undertone reminiscent of traditional NOLA dishes. Another great dry rub is their lemon pepper. The spice pairs nicely with the citrus notes, and neither outweighs the other. And while

24 |

JULY 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

every respectable wing slinger has a barbecue flavor, none taste like their barbecue hickory. I find most BBQ wings too sweet for my preference, but the savory taste coupled with the smokiness of hickory made this a surprise favorite of mine. All too often, garlic parmesan devolves into a clumpy, gooey mess; rather than following suit, this is more of a dry rub, complete with crumbled parmesan battering. The result is a wildly unique take on an old staple. I enjoy this flavor regardless, but this is something truly different from the usual fare. I saved the mango habanero for last, knowing full well this would be the hottest offering I tried; I was not wrong. The light citrus notes upfront belie the creeping heat of the habanero. The taste is great, but be warned: This is hot. It’s not for the faint of heart (or tongue). Fresh carrot sticks certainly help clear the palate and curb the heat, and their fresh-cut fries are crisp with just the right amount of seasoning. There will be another variety of fries loaded with ranch and buffalo coming in July, but that just gives me another reason to go back. Stop in today and see what they’ve got to offer! - Jonathan Gluff For more info, visit wingstop.com.

THE BEAT DADDYS EVERY DAY THEY WRITE THE BOOK: LOCAL BLUES MASTERS CREATING LASTING MUSICAL LEGACY

Fresh off another stellar - and very hot - performance at the W.C. Handy Blues & BBQ Festival in mid-June, The Beat Daddys - featuring singer/guitarist Larry Grisham, lead guitarist Tommy Stillwell, bassist "Big" Jon Rochner and drummer Steve Bennett - are looking to hit some more outdoor events this summer to play off their more intimate performances at area bars (including Bluesday Tuesday on 7/3 at Lamasco). We sat down with Grisham and Stillwell prior to their set at Handy for a wide-ranging discussion that included some great stories about Henderson's long-running free festival, several of which were chronicled in last month's issue. But the guys had a lot more to say about their 35+ year career, so here are some choice comments, including a very telling exchange that came at the end of our conversation but now seems an appropriate place to start. News 4U: You guys need to write a book. The Beat Daddys: Everybody says that to us. YOU RANG? The band's initial dalliance with Britishinfluenced power pop - which manifests itself via The Phonz in the early 80's - is doomed from the beginning. Grisham: We hate that Phonz album so much because we sound like chipmunks. It was recorded at the wrong speed. But we actually see copies on eBay for $50 sometimes.

Stillwell: It's funny, we went to RCA in Nashville who mastered it and we were so excited listening to it that we somehow didn't catch it at first. Everything was fast back then. But we've been kicking around the idea of re-mastering it. HERE COMES DOUBLE TROUBLE After The Phonz debacle, the band shifts musical directions and transforms into The Beat Daddys. The turning point comes when Stillwell discovers the more aggressive blues approach of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Stillwell: I took to him because we grew up with the same

influences - Hendrix, Albert King, Freddie King. I understood what Vaughan was doing - I just had to see him do it before I could pick up on it. Playing both guitar parts at once is something I figured out by watching him. KATRINA & THE WAVES After playing together as The Beat Daddys for a long stretch, the guys take five and spend some time apart, each pursuing music in different cities. While Stillwell stays in the tri-state, Grisham relocates to the Gulf Coast. There, he releases four albums under The Beat Daddys name and tours extensively abroad. But then, in August of 2005, disaster strikes. Grisham: Katrina wiped me out. I was living in Pass Christian right where the storm hit. We were scheduled to play the new Hard Rock Café - which was set to open on a Tuesday - and the storm hit on Monday morning. It was like starting over. MUSE-IC CITY? Post-Katrina, Grisham heads to Nashville for renewed inspiration but finds it tough going. Ultimately, he reaches out to the one person he can truly count on when the chips are down. Grisham: I tried using some of the top Nashville guys, but they cost me a fortune, so I called Tommy up and said we should at least try writing or whatever. So we came back together and that lasted about a year or two. But then we had a disagreement about not wanting to travel so much. I wasn't married, had no kids - I was selfish. But everyone else was missing home life. I didn't really understand that until we got older. HOODOO YOU LOVE? Tired of commuting, Grisham eventually moves back up to Evansville, gets the band back together again and The Beat Daddys play on. They do the bar circuit, rock the tri-state festivals and keep writing, culminating with the release of 2015's Hoodoo That We Doo, a stone cold blues masterpiece. Critical praise ensues. But don't worry, the guys still play the hits. Stillwell: We're fortunate enough that we have enough people that want to hear our original stuff. At the same time, there are just as many or more that want to hear covers. So we do an original set and then come back and play everything from "Brown Sugar" to the Staple Singers, Motown, some rock stuff, Hendrix, etc. We're whores [laughs]. ALI BUCKETS

PROLIFIC TRI-STATE RAPPER EAGER TO FOSTER SENSE OF COMMUNITY IN LOCAL SCENE It’s been said before that rap is a young man’s game, so it’s no surprise that Ali Buckets is regarded as almost an elder statesman within the new wave of hip-hop - despite being only in his mid20s. Wise far beyond his years and possessing a never-ceasing work ethic, he's become the sort of respected artist that younger aspiring rappers look up to, including recent high school graduate, Azariah. "He approached me about helping him put on a show," Buckets says. "He wants to get his name out there." Following in the footsteps of other rap greats who have helped guide younger generations, Buckets was more than glad to lend a hand, working to organize “The Yung Bulls Show” slated for July 20th at PG in Evansville. “There’s a sense of community in hip-hop," he explains. "You can’t think, ‘Oh, I’m enjoying some success, I don’t have time to help out someone else.’ That’s not what it’s about." Initially, the show was to meant to spotlight only Azariah and some of his friends, but eventually Buckets was persuaded to join the bill. “I didn’t want to do it at first, because I don’t want to take the spotlight away from them,” he humbly says. “It’s their night. They’ve got something to prove, and I don’t want to rob them of that.” But isn’t that a good way to bring them more of an audience? “Well, it goes both ways," Buckets explains. "When they asked me, it made sense. I thought, ‘Yeah, let me help expose my audience to you,’ but it also helps get my music out there to their fans as well. Again, it’s all about community.” - Jonathan Gluff For more info, visit pgeville.com and follow Ali Buckets on Facebook. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • JULY 2018

TERRY SARTOR THE TRI-STATE'S BEST KEPT MUSICAL SECRET: VIRTUOSO GUITARIST KEEPS ON ROCKING UNDER THE RADAR Life is full of mysteries, but one of the biggest puzzles of all may be the case of Terry Sartor, tri-state musician extraordinaire. See, the youthful-looking 63-year-old virtuoso guitarist has influenced some of the best players in the area, including the likes of The Beat Daddys' Tommy Stillwell, but still flies under the radar for all intents and purposes. So where is the recognition for such a gifted player? Longtime supporter Brian Broshears - always the first to sing Sartor's praises - is on a mission to get the word out, having enjoyed a front row seat to his good friend's exceptional talent throughout the years (and now with the added thrill of watching his son Kyle play bass for the Terry Sartor Band alongside singer/ guitarist Larry Grisham and drummer Marvin Kraft). He cites the following example of the respect that Sartor commands from those who know a thing or two about music. "Terry is the only guy I know that can go into Guitar Center and pick up the most expensive guitar and they let him play it," he says with a wry smile. "If you're a musician, you want to play with him; if you're a fan, you want to see him play." So how did Sartor get so good? Certainly not from years of training at Julliard or anything. In fact, he's completely selftaught, possessing a natural ability that frankly boggles the mind. Rock, blues, country - you name it, he can do it, effortlessly switching from one genre to the next. Call it musical intuition, something he's exhibited since way back in 1965 when his parents purchased a Sears Twin Tone guitar for their young son. A couple of years later, Sartor stopped by Goldman's Pawn Shop in downtown Evansville and picked up a Les Paul Junior for just $70 - worth about eight grand today - and was off to the races. He's since played just about every axe imaginable, but according to Broshears, it matters little what's in his hands. "Terry can make a $300 guitar sound like a million bucks," he says.

Indeed, Sartor's been making guitars of all makes and models sing for about 50 years now. And while he's back in the Evansville area once again, his lengthy résumé includes performances and longs stints in big cities like Boston and Nashville. Along the way, he's played in any number of bands, including local 90's favorites BSR as well as The Herd - whose debut album was nearly produced by the legendary Todd Rundgren (alas, the guys broke-up before hitting the studio) - and Smokehouse, a gritty outfit that opened for Hank Williams, Jr. and placed fourth out of 2500 in a nationwide competition. More recently, Andy Timmons, former Danger Danger guitarist and current touring musician for Olivia Newton-John, came out and jammed with Sartor at Mojo's Boneyard in Evansville (where he takes the stage every Thursday evening with the appropriately-named Boneyard Trio featuring "Big" Jon Rochner on bass and drummer Danny Erkman). Prior to the Mojo's residency, Sartor logged nine years at Charley's Yellow Rose in Owensboro fronting the Rebel Creek Band. "He never missed a weekend," Broshears says. While Sartor continues to wow his peers on a weekly basis with his fretboard workouts, if there's any justice in this world, he'll get a wider audience in the near future. Seriously, the man deserves it. For instance, how many musicians do you know who have recorded an entire album of Hendrix covers? And played every instrument on it? Of course, as friends of Sartor will tell you, he's far too humble for self-promotion. He's even uncomfortable with labeling his project with Broshears, Grisham and Kraft the "Terry Sartor Band." Maybe that's not surprising considering Sartor shuns the internet and carries around a terrifically outdated piece of technology that he refers to as a "dumb phone." But even if one of the tri-state's most talented musicians won't speak up for himself, it's time we do.

Catch the Terry Sartor Band at Stoner's Grill in Boonville on July 21 and Cricket's in Newburgh on August 4 with special guest Joe Dougherty of the Grass Roots on drums.

CORDUROY ORBISON PHOTO CRED: ANDREW BAUM

TWIN PEAKS-OBSESSED BAND RELEASES THE 2:53 EP, WELCOMES NEW BASS PLAYER INTO THE FOLD

A couple months back, we profiled Corduroy Orbison, an up and coming local band with a true sense of musical history, as evidenced by the material performed at their shows across the tristate over the last year or so - everything from Hank Williams to the Rolling Stones and beyond. Really, their Facebook page sums it up best: "We like songwriters, musicians and storytellers of all generations and genres." But while the band - singer/guitarist David Davis, guitarist Zach Evans, drummer Andrew Baum and new bassist Michael Tellez - clearly excels at interpreting a wide variety of classic songs, they've been quietly compiling a catalog of sparkling originals, five of which they recently recorded with Steve Tyner of Jenny's Bad Hair Day at Black Cat Recording. The finished product, dubbed The 2:53 EP in reference to Davis' Twin Peaks obsession (you'll just have to watch the series to decipher), is a testament to the magic that can happen when an accomplished producer is given the opportunity to work with great musicians - with equally great songs.

of instruments, Tyner was particularly enamored with a certain guitar that Evans arrived with at the studio. "It was set up using the Nashville high tuning," he says. "It's similar to a standard tuned guitar but the E, A, D, and G strings are replaced with lighter gauge strings so they can be tuned higher. It has a bright, sparkly sound that adds a cool dimension to the sound!"

Tyner has quickly become the go-to guy for local and regional bands looking for a professional sound at a fair price. And he works quick to boot. "The tracking for the Corduroy Orbison EP was done in three consecutive days and it took about three weeks to mix," he explains. "Technique-wise, it was a combination of using modern technology like the Kemper profiling amp for the electric guitar sounds and traditional recording techniques for instruments like the acoustic guitar and mandolin." Speaking

By all accounts the band is primed to perform the new songs, despite losing bassist Evan Ciscell post-recording. He's since been replaced by Michael Tellez, an experienced musician who moved here from Texas a few months ago - "a perfect fit," Evans says. You can catch the reconstituted Corduroy Orbison at the following venues in July: Bokeh Lounge with The Spockers (7/7); Old Fox in Lynnville (7/21); Chilly Willy's (7/28).

That bright, sparkly sound is most noticeable on the gorgeously mournful "Moonlit Mystery" (the EP's standout track featuring an extended spacey guitar solo) and "Missing Out," an acoustic folk workout that builds into a vocal tour de force via a multi-tracked Davis and Baum. Elsewhere, opening track "Part 1" shows off the band's funky side with a hint of wah-wah effect on the guitars and a nice groove, while "Shoeless" has a mean rockabilly streak and a driving beat. The EP closes with the haunting "As It Is," a dark, bluesy affair with an air of mystery - "diving into the unknown" as Davis sings.

The 2:53 EP is currently streaming on Spotify and is available for purchase on iTunes, Bandcamp and Amazon. For more info, follow Corduroy Orbison on Facebook.

stories FROM THE STAGE An ongoing series featuring tri-state musicians

You would be hard-pressed to find a musician who hasn’t been in a situation like this. After hours of preparation, driving, and setup, the hapless bandmates are now just minutes from the show. They look around the nearly empty room, then at each other, and sigh. An unshakable feeling builds that someone in the chain had let someone down and this was not going to end well. They can't do anything about it now except take the stage with their hearts on their sleeves, close their eyes, and rock out to that imaginary capacity stadium that lives in every determined player’s head.

FEATURING THE COLD STARES

back there is gonna be some big wig. We had no idea there was a wedding party. I opened my eyes and literally two inches in front of my face is this, um, bride, totally dancing and singing. I forgot the words, forgot the chords, you know. I’m wigging out. Somehow she made it to the ramp and off the stage, and we finished the set. Brian, did you see her coming? Brian: (laughing) I did. I did see her coming, and I didn’t know…I was kinda paralyzed, and I didn’t know what to do. I could tell you didn’t see her and I didn’t think anything good was gonna happen. I know you sing with your eyes closed and I’m thinking, “She’s gonna scare him, and he’s gonna hit her with his guitar or something.”

Such was the night in Nashville, Tennessee for The Cold Stares (Chris Tapp and Brian Mullins) in a 22,000 square foot venue that could have…no, SHOULD have held 1,500 people. Instead of enthusiastic fans pumping fists and singing along, Chris and Brian got a standoffish, back-of-theroom bunch comprised of a wedding party, a handful of other patrons, and one energetic little teapot of a Mexican bride who smelled a lot like massive amounts of cake.

Brian’s theory is she may have been making a point that they didn’t realize it was HER day. Chris said he agreed with that, but he didn’t think she was hating. Chris: She was into it. Brian: I don’t remember her dancing. I remember her standing there with crazy

She must have fought hard to get through that imaginary packed arena to wind up inches from Chris Tapp’s face. His eyes closed tight while dutifully rocking their song, “Cannonball,” Chris was oblivious to the fact that she had marched her own ammunition right up on stage, barely contained by her wedding dress, both cannons firing. They recalled:

eyes!

Chris: They were all in the back of the club, and we’re up on this huge stage fifty yards away from everybody.

UPCOMING SHOWS: 07/06 | Backstage Bar and Grill – 8:30 p.m. Evansville, IN 07/13 | Lafayette’s Music Room – 6:30 p.m. Memphis, TN 08/4-6 | Iris Festival – Öland, Sweden – TBA Öland, Sweden

Brian: It was like they were on the other end of a mall. With the lights in your eyes, you really couldn’t see anybody. We were playing to a row of lights. Chris: It was one of those gigs where you have to close your eyes and go, “Ok. Now we’re in some badass club in downtown New York having the gig of our lives.” I had my eyes closed tight. We were trying to get breaks in Nashville then, and I’m thinking somebody

Chris: She was into it. She was smiling. I can smell her breath still now. It was a mixture of cheap wine and cake. Massive amounts of cake. - Lindsey Williams

A Tribute to JERRY L. TURNER 1942 - 2018

THE PIZZA BRICK ROAD THAT "ALWAYS GOES TO TURONI'S " WAS BUILT BY A KIND AND CARING FAMILY MAN "The thing that I remember most about my dad is that he treated everybody the same - he was fair to everybody, from the dishwasher on up to the top," explains Tom Turner, recalling just one of the many wonderful traits that made his late father a very successful businessman - and a much-admired and respected member of our community. Over 50 years ago, Jerry L. Turner founded one of the tri-state's most iconic restaurants, ultimately making Turoni's a local hotspot known for delicious thin crust pizza, home-brewed beer and great hospitality. And he loved every minute of it, right through to his final days in May. "My dad never talked about retiring - he was going to keep coming in until he couldn't physically do it," Tom says. "He was an incredibly hard worker." As the catchy jingle goes, "Everybody knows that the pizza brick road always goes to Turoni's" - but more accurately, it goes straight to Jerry, who literally put his heart and soul into the business from the moment that he opened the doors back in 1964. Actually, the initial shop was a small, Una-style place on Columbia Street that

60 |

focused on carry-out; but the dream was to find the perfect building for a sit-down restaurant with a bar. It took a number of years and some moving around, but in 1985, Jerry finally secured the ideal location at 408 North Main Street. "It took off right from the start because we already had the following," Tom says. "The place was bigger with great booths and atmosphere." And it was a family affair, too. Not only did Jerry's mother manage the kitchen - "She could get him in line if she had to," Tom laughs but eventually both Tom and his sister Lydia came on board. In fact, when a second Turoni's opened up on Weinbach Avenue in 1990, Tom ran the new restaurant alongside a longtime manager. But Jerry was always in the loop. "Dad came around a lot and was very connected, very hands-on," Tom recalls. Jerry's hands-on approach to the business - which began with the creation of the delicious pizzas - even extended to the decor of Turoni's. His passion for antiques gave the restaurant a signature look, particularly via the Tiffany lamps illuminating the booths. And then there's the classic tile

in the entryways, bathrooms and around the bar. Indeed, Jerry put his stamp on the place. "As dad would say, this is my house - don't mistreat it," Lydia remembers. And he truly meant it. According to Tom, if a customer ever caused any trouble, they were dealt with accordingly, even if it required a little rough justice. But despite Jerry's tough side, he was truly a kind, caring man who adored his wife, Judie, three children and six grandchildren, spending much of his time away from the business attending family functions baseball games, school plays, etc. Simply put, he was from the old school - the kind of stand-up guy that you just don't come across much anymore. As Tom notes, "Who can say that the mayor made a proclamation that the day of the funeral was Jerry Turner Day in Evansville? That's pretty cool." But perhaps Lydia sums it up best reflecting on her dad's devotion to Turoni's. "This was his world; we called it "Jerry's World" - it's where he wanted to be most of the time." NEWS4U JULY 2018 | COMMUNITY & FAMILY

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

CLOVER & ZIPPER: The VHS often sees bonded pairs, which are animals that love each other so much that they must go home together. But usually they are the same species. This was something new for all of us – a rabbit and a guinea pig who are bonded! Clover (rabbit) and Zipper (guinea pig) sleep together, eat together, and even lovingly groom each other in their downtime. They will need a pretty roomy enclosure so there’s enough room for both of them, but with the right setup they’d do great in just about any home! The adoption fee together is $55 ($40 rabbit plus $15 guinea pig.) Clover will be fixed & microchipped for that price. They are both very young males with their whole lives ahead of them! GASTON: No one flirts like Gaston, no one flaunts like Gaston. No one greets all the cat café guests like Gaston! As a specimen, yes, he’s intimidating! Okay, you get the idea. Gaston has a larger-than-life personality and a hefty body to match, and he is the affectionate & outgoing “greeter” at River Kitty Café & Wine Bar. He is about 2 years old, and ready to go home today neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped for $40.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT PUDDIN

Rockport's Vicki Hubert just really loves cats. In fact, she used to work at the Perry County Animal Shelter and often fostered kittens to help get them ready for adoption. Eventually, she wound up with three furry friends of her own: Abby, a Savannah (who is diabetic and requires insulin twice a day), Casper, a Maine Coon mix, and a dilute calico named Kanga. For most people, that would be enough responsibility, but Hubert came across the "sweet and sassy" Puddin at Evansville's River Kitty Cat Café last February. "I just fell in love with her," she says. "I decided that if she was still there after I moved that I was going to get her." By April, Hubert - who works part-time at the Café - was all settled in at her new home in Rockport and sure enough, Puddin was still available. So the feline family got a new addition. And according to Hubert, the transition period was interesting, for sure. "The first day, Puddin came in and instantly started growling at my other cats, and they were like, 'what's this?' Casper and her used to fight, but now they're doing really good - and Puddin has stopped growling." Reportedly, Puddin is a "lap kitty" and loves to be rocked in the baby swing that Hubert acquired in preparation to foster children. Another successful adoption!

SANDY: Sandy is a 4-year-old female hound mix. She has been at the VHS since February 2nd, making her the secondlongest resident dog. She would love a home of her own soon! (But, preferably with no kitty cats in it please.) Sandy’s adoption fee is $110 and includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and more.

ASK THE PASTOR

THE WRITE STUFF

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

DOES IT PAY TO BE SINFUL?

I was talking with one of you who reads this column monthly. I was told that the column was enjoyable and informative. I expressed my thanks. I said, “I’m writing next month’s column today. What should I write about?” My friend thought for a moment and then said, “Something on ‘the wages of sin.’” The reference is to a verse in the Letter to the Romans: “…the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) If you take a pretty broad definition of sin as living in a way that is contrary to what God wants for us, it would appear the verse from Romans is completely false. In our day and time, sin seems to be paying a pretty nice salary. We see people who are self-absorbed, instead of caring for others, and they’re making a fortune. We see people who can’t tell truth from falsehood, and we give them untold power. We see people who abuse the poor, ignore injustice, and fail to be responsible for the people who are entrusted to their care, and we reward them with authority over a nation. Sin seems to be paying pretty well these days. But those behaviors are, in truth, leading to death – (hopefully) not physical death, but a death of spirit and a death of hope. So, let us work together to build a community, a nation, and a world where the power of death is destroyed and we can live together as the people God intends for us to be. with Jonathan Gluff Days of the New (or “Feels Like the First Time”) I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not what you’d call a sports fan. Having played baseball, basketball, occasionally football and cross country - from the time I could run (not to mention continuing baseball all the way through my freshman year of college), I got more than a little burnt out. Coupled with our house’s TV being nearly always glued to SportsCenter when there wasn’t an actual game being watched, you could safely say I got enough sports through my childhood and adolescence to last me a lifetime. That’s not to criticize sports fans. Sure, I may make the occasional snide remark about one team “outsportsing” the other, or snarkily refer to all games as “sportsball,” but different strokes for different folks, right? I’d be a hypocrite to say otherwise. So when I realized my new job would likely require me to participate in golf outings with customers, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t more than a little hesitant. For one, while I may still be able to paint the strike zone with fastballs (two or four-seam), sliders, and change-ups, my golf experience consists solely of: A) Watching golf tournaments (again, not by choice) on Sunday afternoons, B) mini-golf, and C) Happy Gilmore.

Obviously, none of these things translate well into actual playing ability, so I plunked down money on the cheapest set of clubs and equipment I could find and hit the driving range. Like my similarly abysmal bowling scores, I was happy to hit 100 (yards, in this case, of course), so my prospects weren’t looking too great. Fortunately, my first outing wasn’t a total disaster. Since it was a scramble (that’s the parlance for “play the closest ball to the hole”), my utter lack of skill didn’t bring our team down, and my partners had incredibly helpful advice. By the end of the day, I was even hitting straight drives that weren’t completely embarrassing. But most importantly, despite the sunburn and 90+ degree weather, I actually had a lot of fun. I never once got frustrated or down on myself for shanking an iron, and I even restrained from the infamous putter toss. My point is that it’s great to have new experiences. You never know what fun you may have stepping outside your comfort zone. And even if you don’t enjoy it, rarely will you not gain something from it.

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE with Marisa Patwa

You gotta see-a Mamma-Mia! Get ready to sing along and dance your heart out because 2018’s catchiest and cutest summer musical, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, comes out on July 20. This sure-fire smash hit features an allstar cast including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgard, Christine Baranski, Andy Garcia, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper and last but certainly not least, Cher - who makes a grandiose and spicy appearance in the final scene of the trailer. Although the original musical has been adored and performed time and time again both on screen and off, this movie is furthering the Greek Island of love world of Streep and Seyfried by providing a true glimpse of Streep’s character Donna as a young woman coming into her own, a role played by breakout English actress Lily James through extensive flashbacks. You may have seen James as the titular star in Cinderella (2015), or as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies (2016), but I truly believe that her role as young Donna will solidify her standing as a Hollywood starlet and incredible entertainer.

I can tell that just by seeing the range of emotions and talent she brings in the two minute and 39 second long trailer for the movie. She’s gutsy, passionate, inspiring, breathtakingly beautiful and more than anything, the girl can sing. What really excites me about this movie is the correlation between Seyfried’s character being pregnant in 2018 with her mom’s journey becoming pregnant with her in her early twenties. I became a young mom at 22 and it was something that really bonded my own mother and me. My mom, twin sister and I also grew up having dance parties to the music of ABBA, the universally beloved Swedish pop group whose many hit songs Mamma Mia! utilizes to create a dynamic soundtrack. So this movie is especially meaningful to me. But even if you aren’t a young mom and have never seen the original Mamma Mia! - or have no idea who ABBA even is - this will still be a joyful movie about a young girl’s journey into womanhood with, of course, killer music that will make you want to get up and become your own “Dancing Queen.”

GOP STANDS UP FOR TRADITIONAL VALUES AT THE FORD CENTER

If there's one thing the election of Donald Trump has proven is that it's still politically expedient to be behind Christian and traditional values. While Christians were at best ignored - and at worse mocked - during the Obama administration, Trump has embraced Christians and it's one of the main reasons he got elected. Simply put, his victory has emboldened Christians to stand up for their faith. This was on display during the Republican State Convention held in Evansville for the first time this year. A bit of controversy surrounded the event. At issue was a debate over whether to include language in this year's platform to say "strong families are based on a marriage between a man and a woman." The Republicans overwhelmingly voted to keep this language in their platform chalking up a win for traditionalists. However, people like Jon Webb of the Evansville Courier & Press went to Twitter to call people who supported this measure "bigots." Sure, there are people that hate homosexuals. But any devout Christian will tell you those people are not behaving in accordance with Christian values. It's hard to say what is really in President Trump's heart and if he truly believes in Jesus Christ as his Savior, but he has certainly emboldened Christians to stand up for their faith. The vote at the Ford Center in Evansville proves that. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

ANON

K5 INTERNATIONAL Watching Anon, the sci-fi, speculative film written and directed by Andrew Niccol, feels like diving back into the comic strip series Closer Than We Think! by Author Radebaugh. The series spanned from 1958 to '63 and marked a golden era of American Futurism. The far-fetched yet seemingly plausible depictions of the not-so-distant future captured the optimism of a country enthralled with the bright and shiny new frontier that during the early stages of NASA seemed more than inevitable. This optimism carries over into Niccol's script, but the frontier isn't space. Instead, he focuses on a future we've all become so overwhelmed with: technology based inter-connectivity. And just like Radebaugh, Niccol provides an evocative picture that feels at once strange and familiar, but as with Radebaugh, Niccol's depiction is anything but real. Throughout the film, as we follow Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried through this current era's representation of Global Futurism, we are reminded that this fictional world is only a cartoon-ish version of what might be. The tidy sets and stiff plot points give the overall world Niccol has created the feeling of a thinly veiled concept, a trompe l'oeil that uses our own insecurities and unhealthy dependences with social media as a crutch. This is not to say that we need the grit and uncanny to fall under the illusion of a science fiction film. It is only to remind Niccol of the kind of influence and measure he employed during his first feature, Gattaca. If only he had practiced the same level of care with Anon. - John Thurgood

SARA'S NOTEBOOK TELECINCO CINEMA

Sara's Notebook follows Laura Alonso, played by Spanish actress Belen Rueda, as she tracks down her missing sister in a country under civil war. While the main focus of the film is Laura's steadfast devotion to family, the driving force behind Sara's Notebook is its setting. Laura travels from Madrid to the Congo, a part of Africa that has been attacking itself for generations. Though the global-political position of the country in relation to its natural resources and the turmoil for which they have caused goes unanswered, the breakaway shots of a people at war with themselves fills the two-hour storyline with pockets of reflection and unforgettable human strife. Throughout Laura's search, she is given choices that no one should endure, and while she is only a foreigner, it becomes heartbreakingly clear that much of the corruption she navigates is only commonplace for the Congolese who live there every day. Authors like Chris Abani and Peter Orner come to mind for their work in documenting the lives of everyday individuals from surrounding parts of Africa, and while Sara's Notebook doesn't expand on the real story of those people, it is a candid, sidelong look at the atrocities that humanity can employ under duress - and the pursuit of lots and lots of money. - John Thurgood

ARCTIC MONKEYS Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino Domino Recording Company If you’ve ever wanted to re-live (or just live) the experience of sitting in a shag-carpeted room full of wood paneling listening to a David Bowie record in the 80s, the Arctic Monkeys have you covered with Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino. It feels like the soundtrack to a science fiction movie one would either have to watch multiple times or see under the effects of illicit substances to really get it. This album truly feels like I need it on vinyl and I need to store it in a milk crate amongst a bunch of glam rock and psychedelic records from years past. The comparison to Bowie isn’t just a cheap joke to start a review; the Arctic Monkeys have brought a fair bit of jazz influence into their musical compositions and brought more piano into the mix than guitar. The end product is a timeless album that isn’t trying to be like its influencers, but it could be filed alongside them and not seem out of place. This is a rare example of an album that shines if the listener takes the time to sit alone in a room with headphones and spend 40 minutes drinking it in. - Gavin Gaddis

LOUIE ZONG Dawgz Self-Released

OWL CITY Cinematic Self-Released Cinematic is the audio version of eating a ton of one’s favorite candy in a short amount of time. Perhaps fun-sounding on paper, but cloyingly sweet and regrettable in its execution. Cinematic feels like it’s trying to trade on pre-existing ideas at every turn. The album art is a badlyphotoshopped imitation of Drew Struzan’s classic “a bunch of heads hovering over the title” poster style made famous by Star Wars and Indiana Jones. The top songs are so saccharine they feel like someone was hired to parody an early Owl City single. Frankly, I’ve heard soundtracks from made-for-television Disney movies that have more complexity and variety. I’ve not checked in on Owl City since Ocean Eyes when it was physically impossible to escape the monolithic figure that was "Fireflies," and I gotta say this is sorely disappointing. It feels like Young has spent the last decade doing nothing to expand creatively. Cinematic’s songs are so similar to Ocean Eyes that the two albums are basically interchangeable. The sad truth is there are people out there who would rather an artist stay exactly the same than grow, and I’m here to say that Cinematic is just what they’ve been looking for. - Gavin Gaddis

SNOW PATROL Wildness Polydor

It’s impossible to listen to a Louie Zong album and not be smiling by the end of it. Dawgz has a tall order to fill after Levels, Zong's previous release that had the brilliant twist of pretending to be a soundtrack to a fictional Game Boy Color game. Not to disappoint, the first track on Dawgz, "Here Comes a Good Boy," feels like the theme song to an animated series about dogs, featuring bouncy horns backed by a funky bass line and piano with a sprinkling of sampled dog barks for good measure.

I propose the album art needs a disclaimer warning listeners from taking this in while driving, writing, or really doing anything involving being in a good mood. Snow Patrol is back and they’re here to wreck your day if one isn’t ready for it. Wildness is a good album, make no mistake, but it also begs one to be mindful of what they’re doing while listening. In my case I thought it’d be fun to play a rousing game of Team Fortress 2 with the sound muted while listening to the album straight through.

The remaining songs feature some sort of dog-themed title - i.e. "Always Curious," "Cone of Shame," "Happy You’re Home." And all work both as songs on their own and to bolster my theory that this whole album is supposed to be a soundtrack to a fictional television show about dogs. Regardless of the theming, Dawgz brings out a good mood and fun times purely from its instrumental work. It’s hard to make something inherently cute and fun without veering too hard into being sickeningly twee. I expect if these songs had lyrics they’d do just that, but as it stands, Zong knocks it out of the park. - Gavin Gaddis

I had to stop five songs in because it felt like I was living out one of those moments in a movie where the main character realizes they have crushing depression and their life is going nowhere. The music isn’t inherently sad, but it does carry that tonal quality that films have trained me to associate with a sad or depressing scene. To listen to this album is to feel like one has no control over their life, but in a good way. The extra time and polish afforded by five years’ production time truly shows in what they’ve delivered: a cohesive, functional album. - Gavin Gaddis

BEACH SLANG Everything Matters but No One is Listening Polyvinyl Records From historic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Beach Slang recently released their third studio album under the pseudonym Quiet Slang. Everything Matters But No One Is Listening is an acoustic, piano-based project, a change from their indie punk offerings of the past. Not exactly an upbeat, cheery summer record, Everything Matters is a more emotional rendition of Beach Slang, featuring stripped down versions of songs from earlier releases. James Alex, lead singer of both Beach and Quiet Slang, explained that the motivation for this softer, orchestral album was to bring the emotion back to the lyrics that he felt was lost in the noise of heavy guitars and drums. While this reincarnation of Beach Slang is a far cry from the early days of emo music (think Hawthorne Heights), lyrics like “It’s a dead-end town for trash like us / But I got a full tank and a couple bucks” from the song “Throwaways” are enough to get you to dig up your black eyeliner and My Chemical Romance shirt from freshman year. While this album is a go-to for late night drives and post-breakup binge sessions, for a poolside tune check out Beach Slang’s previous records. - Kendall Shanks

A$AP ROCKY TESTING A$AP Worldwide/Polo Grounds Music/RCA Records With two number one albums to his credit - 2013's Long. Live. A$AP. and 2015's At. Long. Last. A$AP. - Rakim Mayers (aka A$AP Rocky) is back with TESTING, an example of the new style of mumble rap which features heavy bass and slurred rhymes. While this subgenre has its share of fans, for many it does a disservice to the greater rap genre by eliminating the very iconic beats and internal syllable stress that characterize the genre. While the album is not entirely reflective of this soft rap, TESTING features a distant, canned sound, namely on the song “CALLDROPS.” With features on the album from French Montana and Juicy J, TESTING had great potential, but falls short of being anything revolutionary. On top of the mumble rap, there is also a layer of electronic noise rap as heard on records like Clipping’s Splendor & Misery. True to the era of Soundcloud rappers, the songs on TESTING seem to be created less in the name of concept and meaning, and more in the name of aesthetic. - Kendall Shanks

30 SECONDS TO MARS AMERICA Interscope Records Actor Jared Leto's long-running musical project takes a hard look at our nation on America, the fifth album from 30 Seconds to Mars. “Do you believe you can walk on water?” asks the opening track, questioning the holier-than-thou attitude seen in American idealism. Verses layered over a syncopated beat illustrate the disconnect between how the United States is seen, and its true actions - land of the free, but not of immigrants; home of the brave, but not of owning up to its faults. In the age of political polarization, America is an example of how the younger generations are addressing the complexities of what it means to be born in the United States, both the pride and shame that come with being an American. This struggle resonates through the entire album, with a combination of alternative rock reminiscent of “A Beautiful Lie”-era 30 Seconds to Mars, with pop-rock synthesizers and electronic notes. A palatable album that questions the foundation of American cultural identity, America is deceptively catchy. With soft vocals and steady beats, it's easy to get lost in the music and lose the meaning of the album as a whole. - Kendall Shanks

JASON ALDEAN Rearview Town Sony Music CG One of country music's biggest stars, Jason Aldean has been racking up number one singles and industry awards for over a decade now, positioning himself at the forefront of the new country movement. Indeed, while the Georgia native's voice is rich, with country’s classic twang, Rearview Town is not a classic country record. With electric guitars and slang (Aldean even says “lit”), this latest album has cross-genre influences, making it more appealing to younger generations of country fans. The one downfall of Aldean’s latest album is its saturation with songs about fiery love affairs. An overdone country love song is only so appealing after the third one on the album. A good record for summer cruising, all 15 songs seem to flow together into one larger love song. The only break from the love song comes in the form of casual alcoholism heard in nearly every modern country record. With lyrics like, “Whiskey’s supposed to drown the memories,” the typical tropes of alcohol and women in country music are just a little too obvious on Rearview Town - Kendall Shanks

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. NEW HOLLAND TANGERINE SPACE MACHINE

VIRTUE CIDER ROSÉ

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5

This one’s a cider. It pours up a pale, light pink with an airy, quick to fade head that becomes a thin foamy layer. The nose is mild and of apples, fruit and honey. The taste is surprisingly tarter than the aroma suggests. That’s a good thing in my opinion. Not too sweet with tart apple and a nice effervescence. The mouthfeel is light to medium. Overall, I think it’s pretty good and suggest you give it a try if cider is your “cup of tea.”

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A white head forms on this cider after pouring it into a traditional English pub glass, but it evaporates quickly. The cider’s pink tint and French oak aging process add nice touches to the finished product. The scent of apples with faint hints of other fruit round out the scent profile. The initial tasting of the cider contains an abundance of tart apple flavors. Pair it with soft-ripened cheeses, oysters or brunch dishes.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

I'm not much of a cider guy, but this one is pretty decent. It has a dark amber color with a rose hue to it - nice aroma and very tart. I consider it a little better than the other apple drinks out there. The more I drink this beverage it almost reminds me of a cheap champagne.

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5

The brewers call this one a New England Style IPA. It pours a pale, hazy, light orange color with a fluffy off-white two finger head and a lot of lacing. Its aroma is mostly tangerine and citrus. The taste follows the nose with tangerine, hops and light pale malts. The taste is very good but in my opinion lacks the depth and complexity of an excellent New England IPA. This is a wheat-based brew so the mouthfeel is light, almost watery. It’s very drinkable and has the potential to be very popular.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A decent white head tops this hazy golden India Pale Ale. The scent of tangerine dominates the scent profile. The tangerine flavors take a few seconds to appear with the first tasting of the beer, but they remain during the finish. People who like IPAs will want to drink this during the summer months to help them stay cool and refreshed. Pair it with sharp Cheddar cheese or serve it with your favorite barbecue.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This beer is a nice orange color. I can taste the tangerine right away. The only issue I have with this beer is that the flavor is not as intense as I expected. I have been big on the orange beers this year and really enjoyed them. This one has a clean finish - just wish it had more flavor.

450 NORTH HAZY POTTER

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.75

Dispensed from a 16oz Harry Potterthemed can, it pours up a murky (definitely hazy) dark yellow color, creates a big healthy head and leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is light and piney with mild pale malts. The taste is on the low side of IPA bitterness with a hops and malts balance that makes this one pretty darn drinkable for even the beginner IPA drinker. The mouthfeel is medium and drinkability is very good. It’s brewed in Columbus, Indiana. Give it a try!

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A white head crowns a cloudy India Pale Ale. A nice blend of citrus and pine scents from the hops used in the brewing process fill the nose. The citrus flavors continue first when sipping the beer, followed quickly by pine flavors, with the two going back and forth in the finish. IPA fans will enjoy this, and people who stay away from them might enjoy it also. Pair it with spicy dishes.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a cloudy beer with a tint of orange. I notice it has a 7% ABV so you get a little bang for your buck. It has a good hops flavor with a strong grapefruit note to it. It's pretty light and refreshing at the same time. Usually when beers try to butt in on another commercial platform they come up short. This brewery does a good job spoofing Harry Potter and brings a good beer to the table.

OSKAR BLUES FUGLI

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

Compelling name, huh? To quote Oskar Blues, “Yuzu and Ugli fruit infusions twisted together with the blueberry, tangerine notes

of Mosaic make for a tangy, juicy, zesty array of aroma and flavor.” It pours up a slightly cloudy, rich golden color. There’s a nice two finger head followed by lacing that follows you to the final swig. The aroma is mostly tropical fruit and hops, light but nice. The taste is exactly what one might expect but better with mostly citrus and hops that are well-matched. If only it had a bit more bitter on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium and the drinkability is good. This is a “one off” brew. Try it now if you want the experience.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thick white head rests on this beer and takes

some time to evaporate. A lot of fruity notes control the nose. More tart fruit notes come through with the first sip of the beer, with bitter hops also moving forward in the long finish. This beer will work as an excellent addition to your cooler during the summer. Pair it with spicy dishes that stay on the milder side, summer vegetables, seafood, chicken or pork.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a clear golden beer. I can smell citrus and other fruits. As IPAs go, it's ok. I can taste the hops but it's almost watery in terms of the flavor. I consider this a beginner IPA.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
