DOWNTOWN EVANSVILLE HAUNTED HOUSES GOING FOR THE JUGULAR WITH OLD SCHOOL SCARES Say what you want about Evansville, but the simple fact remains that our city is home to two of the nation's scariest - and most fun - haunted houses courtesy of Phil Wolter, the creator of the Oldé Courthouse Catacombs and House of Lecter. Never has there been a man more passionate about the chills and thrills of Halloween. Year after diabolical year, he comes up with new ways to make the tri-state scream - and laugh, too - as thousands of people converge on downtown Evansville each fall and make their way through the bowels of the area's creepiest buildings. The theme for 2018 is "Classic Monsters Pt. 1" - including the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein, Werewolf, Pennywise the Dancing Clown and more. They will haunt the halls of the Oldé Courthouse and House of Lecter, awaiting your arrival in the Pit of Misery with the sole intent of scaring the living daylights out of all who dare to enter. In fact, they might even bite! But don't fret - everyone will be supplied with free fangs this year, so you can bite right back! Tickets are $20 per haunted house. NEWS4U OCTOBER 2018 | UPCOMING EVENTS

The former Late Late Show host on the push and pull of technology, mucking around on TV, the whereabouts of Geoff Peterson and more VIC TORY THEATRE | NOVEM BER 1 | 7PM For 10 hilarious, groundbreaking years, Craig

Ferguson helmed The Late Late Show on CBS, infusing the stale talk show format with a fresh, keen

wit and boundless energy - not to mention breaking tradition by going it alone, bar the occasional chirping from Geoff Peterson, a remotely operated

robot skeleton. The Scottish-born comedian took

over for Craig Kilborn in 2005; within a few short

years, Ferguson's ratings had raced past fellow late night host Jimmy Fallon, thanks in large part to his knack for turning the ever-predictable celebrity

interview on its head. But despite critical acclaim

and loyal viewers, by 2014 he was ready to move on, branching out into TV game shows as the Daytime Emmy Award-winning host of Celebrity Name Game

and returning to acting (Ferguson's turn as Nigel Wick on ABC's The Drew Carey Show from

1996-2004 remains a fan favorite), having previously written and starred in such

films as The Big Tease, Saving Grace and I'll Be There.

In addition to film and TV, Ferguson

has kept himself busy with standup

comedy, producing five specials over the last 10 years that have

preserved his take on society at

that particular moment in time. However, with the new "Hobo Fabulous" Tour, he has vowed to

never record the show, "so it only exists in the theatre on the night

that it's there. No show will ever be

the same as any other show."

10 |

OCTOBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Is your refusal to record the "Hobo Fabulous" Tour related to a distrust of technology? It's a weird kind of push and pull thing. On the one hand, I do love technology and on the other hand, I do think that it's a little tricky. What it manifests itself into is when the technology goes ahead of the art. And what I mean by that is, that it becomes more important to feed the technology than it is to do the show. I did five stand-up specials and when I look at those specials, they're ok - I don't mind. But, the truth of the matter is anybody who was in the room that night can tell you that it was better to be in the room than to watch the special. And [by not recording the show], I won't have an agenda to refine a joke so that it will work better on TV six months from now. I'm not going to do that. Your standup material can be described as a little "blue" - a reaction to our uptight times, perhaps? I guess "blue" is one way to describe it, but what it is, is personal. Look, I swear when I talk - I do; that's just what happens. So, if you don't like people swearing, then that's going to bother you. I talk about some things that have happened to me and if you don't want to hear about things that have happened to me, then it's going to bother you. One of the reasons that I'm doing this show live and I'm never going to record it, is because you know who I am; people who come to see me know who I am. It's not like, oh, let's get a babysitter, buy a ticket and deal with the sh*t going out and trying to get somewhere to see a guy you don't know. You know who I am, you know how I'm going to be - and that's who I want to make comedy for. Your wife Megan worked with you on the 2017 web-series Couple Thinkers. Do you run your standup material by her? My wife writes a lot of what I do. We're very much a team. It's not like I write in the traditional sense. I do write, but I don't write the standup in that way. And so we talk about it and she comes up with ideas, so we're very much a team with that kind of thing. But she doesn't come on the road with me because she's not an idiot.

Your approach to celebrity interviews on The Late Late Show was so refreshing. You made them fun and a little off-the-wall at times. What was the key to a great interview? I think what I did when I was interviewing people...I actually don't think that I have that skill - I'm not an interviewer, I don't have that journalistic skill. But what I was able to do was impress on people that that's exactly what I wasn't - I wasn't an interviewer. So, you can talk to me and I'm not trying to find something that you don't want to say or find something out about you. I don't care - I just want to talk to you. So really what it became - to answer the question - what made it a great interview is somebody that felt comfortable just to talk. Really, it was on the guest. If they wanted to give a good interview, they would. If they didn't, then it was on them. I'd fill the five, 10, 15 minutes of air time somehow, because that was my job. I was just mucking around on TV. Mucking around on TV sounds like a decent way to earn a living. If you do enough of these shows, you start to really...I mean, I used to turn up 10 minutes before the show in the last four or five years. And I was like, 'yeah, right...' I turned up in time for makeup and that was it. Here's a hypothetical: ABC contacts you about a reboot of The Drew Carey Show. Thoughts? [Laughs] I don't think ABC was aware that The Drew Carey Show was on when it was on. Look, Drew's a friend of mine and he remains a friend. Like, if Drew called me up and said, 'Do you want to do a reboot of the show?' If I was available to do it, of course I would. These people are my friends - I worked with them for eight or nine years. But am I walking up and down my hotel room hoping the phone will ring? No, I'm not. Finally, do we know what has happened to Geoff Peterson? Yes, we do. Geoff lies in an unmarked grave - the location known only to me. And when the world needs him again, he will rise up, shake one arm, light up his blue eyes and tell you where he has a place.

VETTE CITY MOTORCYCLE MUSIC FEST BOWL ING G REEN, KY | OC TOBER 1 2 & 13

"THE QUEEN OF METAL" LITA FORD ON BRET MICHAELS, ROCKING OUT IN HOTEL ROOMS, GETTING RESPECT AND MORE Bowling Green is known throughout the region for great live music, a reputation built on hosting events like the upcoming Vette City Motorcycle Music Fest headlined by Bret Michaels of Poison and country star Gretchen Wilson and supported by an all-star lineup including Lita Ford, Foghat, Kentucky Headhunters, Georgia Satellites and many others. In addition, the two-day festival will feature biker games, bike shows, car/truck shows, dyno drags, the globe of death, a beer garden and lots of vendors, as well as $1000 winner-take-all poker runs on both Friday and Saturday. Scheduled to fire up the crowd before Bret Michaels closes the festival out on Saturday evening, Lita Ford began her phenomenal rise to stardom in 1976, playing alongside the legendary Joan Jett in the Runaways, the first all-female, teenage rock band. The undisputed "Queen of Metal" went solo in 1983, releasing Out for Blood and establishing herself as a powerhouse lead guitarist. Five years later, "Close My Eyes Forever," a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, reached the Billboard Top 10 - just one of several hits, including the anthemic "Kiss Me Deadly," off of 1988's Lita. Following a long break from music, 2012's Living Like a Runaway and companion memoir reignited her career. She's been going full throttle ever since. Considering that the Poison guys once pranked you pretty good at the end of a tour in the late 80's - as documented in your book - aren't you at least a little tempted to get Bret back at Vette City? Keeping in mind that the two of

12 |

OCTOBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

you later made up, of course. [Laughs] Oh, no, no. Bret is just awesome. He's just awesome I would never play a prank on him. I had my chance and I blew it. I hit him in the mouth, instead [laughs]. He actually played here [in Evansville] a couple of years ago at a big outdoor concert and lots of neighbors - even from far away - complained about the noise, reportedly. That's funny. We just did a Scrap Metal show in Hinckley, Minnesota and all these musicians showed up - there was just a ton of musicians all crammed into one band. And we got there the night before the show and didn't have time to rehearse anything. So we all crammed into a hotel room and we got amplifiers and a little PA system and all these guitars were cranking and blazing and next thing you know, the neighbors in the next hotel room were complaining. They called downstairs to the security and security came up and pounded on our door. Of course, I opened my door standing there holding my [B.C. Rich] red Warlock guitar and went, 'uh...' They looked around the room and saw a bunch of musicians, and I said, 'can you just give us 15 minutes and we'll be done?' So, they went away and had to call their supervisor - and the supervisor approved 15 minutes. So in the meantime, the people who complained are still complaining, so I just invited them in, too. And they came in and were just, 'oh my god,' on the bed watching everybody play. It was insane - security came back up and it was just one big party [laughs].

Your parents happily allowed you to tour the world with the Runaways as a teenager and experience all the craziness that came with it. Were you surprised at all by their carefree attitude? You know, my dad had 11 sisters - it wasn't like he wasn't used to being around women, you know? And my mother had three sisters, so there were a lot of women in the family. I think when I was born, my dad was just kind of like, 'ok - you know, I really wanted a boy.' So, I kind of got raised as one of the guys - even though I really wasn't. He was so used to being around all these women and everything that happened to them - I can only imagine. Pregnancies and weird births - I know my mother had a miscarriage in a train station in Italy. It's just insane. And what I went through as a teenager in the Runaways - even with drugs and alcohol and sex and everything else that happened, touring and not being home...they were just ok with all of it; they understood it all. I felt like I could always go to them and say, 'I f*cked up, guys - you need to help me.' And they would. They would come and get me if I couldn't drive; they would always talk me through a hangover [laughs]. You have cited the guitar solo on "The Ripper" from 1990's Stiletto as a high point. Do you still consider it the pinnacle of your fretboard work? I don't know, there's a lot of great stuff on Living Like a Runaway. You know, it's different; it's not as angry and erratic as that solo - that solo's just wahhhhh! I think that was Jack Daniels-influenced. Fire water. Are you working on a follow-up to Living Like a Runaway? Yeah, we are. The problem is...I'm working with Gary Hoey and Hoey's on tour and I'm on tour and we're trying to hook-up to continue working. We started something really amazing and we've got almost half the album written, but we need to record some more and write some more songs. We've got the newer ones recorded and demoed and they're great, just great. So, I'm really excited about it. Finally, after more than four decades in the music industry, do you feel like you've been given the proper kudos for all you've achieved as a female rocker? Oh, yeah. At the NAMM [National Association of Music Merchants] show in 2017, Marshall Amplification nominated me the "First Lady of Rock Guitar" and I was given the Icon Award. I just took that and went, 'yeah, I've done it. I've gotten there - I'm there.' For tickets and more info, visit vettecitymotorcyclemusicfest.com.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD "LAST OF THE STREET SURVIVORS"

Farewell Tour

FORD C ENTER | OC TOBER 2 7 | 7PM

Guitarist

Rickey Medlocke talks the long goodbye, that legendary "Free Bird" solo and more

They defined the sound of Southern rock in the early-to-mid 1970s with a string of heartfelt yet gritty singles that have never left the musical consciousness of the country. Hailing from Jacksonville, FL, Lynyrd Skynyrd, in a span of less than five years, delivered timeless classics such as "Free Bird," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Simple Man," "Tuesday's Gone," "Gimme Three Steps," "What's Your Name" and more. However, the success would come at a terrible cost. In 1977, a plane crash took the lives of frontman Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines, bringing an end to a remarkable run - at least temporarily. Recruiting Van Zant's little brother Johnny to take over lead vocals, the surviving members resurrected the

14 |

band in 1987, eventually drafting in Blackfoot's Rickey Medlocke on guitar (he was briefly the band's drummer from 1971-72) to effectively replace Allen Collins who died from chronic pneumonia a few years after the reformation. More new faces have appeared over the years as all but one original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed on, leaving guitarist Gary Rossington as the last man standing. Still, the band plays on, as they say, selling out shows everywhere they go on the "Last of the Street Survivors" Farewell Tour, a long goodbye that

OCTOBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

will see Lynyrd Skynyrd visit Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South America, followed by one more trek around the States. As Medlocke notes, "Now's the time to get your Skynyrd fix on because at some point, we're not going to be there." What was the deciding factor in making this the final tour? Was it a full band decision? The deciding factor has been Gary [Rossington]. In the last several years he has had some serious health problems with his heart. And, you know, basically he's no longer able to keep up with

the rigors of doing 80 to 100 shows a year. We finally decided at the end of last year - between management, Gary, Johnny and myself - that we thought that it was a good idea [to stop]. We want to keep Gary around for as long as we can keep him. There's no sense in going out there and beating him up night after night, day after day with all the demands that it entails. Plus, Gary's wife - she's one of the backing vocalists - she was in on the decision from the ground up. Really, to be honest with you, you never really say goodbye. We're planning on recording some new music and putting it out. And I'm sure that there are going to be special events and special things that come along.

you and if you pass the audition, I'll give you $1.50 and a Snickers bar.' That was the exact message. That was at the beginning of March in '96 and I set about learning all the songs that they might play in the show and come the very beginning of May, I was out on stage doing my first show with them.

What's been the highlight of the tour for you so far? I've got to tell you that we just played our hometown of Jacksonville on September 2nd. There was an estimated 55-57,000 people there. We had a great time - shared the stage with five other bands: Kid Rock, Jason Aldean, Charlie Daniels, Blackberry Smoke and Marshall Tucker. It was an all-day event and even with rain delays and lightning delays, at 10:30 p.m. every single person was still there. They never left and it was midnight right when we hit "Free Bird." Kind of a perfect way to sail on out with fireworks and everything like that. It was a beautiful evening.

Speaking of being out on stage...you really have a presence as a guitar player, reacting to fans and getting everyone involved in the show. You know something? I've been beat up over the years by people saying that I'm too over-the-top with Skynyrd but for every bad comment, there's a hundred good comments. What I do is try to make sure that everybody coming in to see that show enjoys themselves. The whole thing with me on stage is that it all comes natural to me. It's not one of these things where I've stood in front of the mirror and rehearsed.

Do you still remember the call you received in 1996 to join the band? I've still got the cassette tape here somewhere at the house from the answering machine. I was over at my studio with my manager and I decided to go check my messages at the house. There was only one message - and it was, 'Hey Rickey, this is your brother Gary. I want you to learn "I Ain't the One," Saturday Night Special," "That Smell" and "Free Bird." I want you to play all of Allen's parts - that's what I want you to learn. And I'm going to come down to Fort Myers and audition

You must have played the legendary "Free Bird" solo thousands of times by now. Do you try to bring something new to it each time? I'm getting ready to tell you something

that a lot of people don't believe, but the easiest song for me to learn was "Free Bird." And I'll tell you why: because I recognized the licks and then all I had to do was put them in sequence - and once you got them in sequence, it came to you. Every night when I play the song, it does take on a whole new character. There might be some little part in there that the audience doesn't hear but is a little different. And I try to do it a little different. That's just me closing my eyes and letting go. I hope the day comes when I cross over and I see Allen...I hope to get a handshake from him. I think he was one of the world's most underrated guitar players. That's what I believe. What's your take on why Lynyrd Skynyrd has seemingly transcended genres and is beloved by such a wide range of people to this very day? Ronnie was a poet for every person in all walks of life. He could say it in words and people could understand it because it was for the everyday person. It doesn't matter if it's a hip-hop guy or a pop gal, a heavy metal shredder everybody can get next to those tunes, can find something in those songs that they can relate to. And isn't it funny - they were only able to do it for four short years. In four short years, they created something that has lasted a lifetime. You know what, man? I was a part of it in the early years - I played drums for them. And coming from my inside perspective, people have no idea the time spent and the work ethic that the band had - it was amazing. It's the music that has transcended over time and will be here a lot longer after I'm gone, that's for sure. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter. com. Danny Gokey

"THE HOPE ENCOUNTER" O L D N AT I ON A L E V EN T S PLA ZA | N OVEMB ER 3 | 7 PM

American Idol

Former star talks first headlining tour, expectations of fans, choosing to be positive and more Known for being fashionably bespectacled at all times, Danny Gokey wowed the judges on season 8 of American Idol with his soulful vocals and touched the hearts of fans drawn to his personal story. Sadly, just weeks before appearing on the show, the Milwaukee native's wife passed away as a result of complications from surgery; however, he soldiered on, honoring her legacy by making it all the way to the top three, finishing just behind Adam Lambert and winner Kris Allen. Post-American Idol, Gokey released the country-influenced My Best Days in 2010, highlighted by the lead single "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me." It was a chart success but not the direction he ultimately wanted to pursue. 2013's Hope in Front of Me took a more adult contemporary approach to the music and better represented the singer's Christian faith with lyrics of praise and worship. A GMA Dove Award-winning Christmas album followed two years later, leading up to the triumphant, career-defining Rise at the beginning of 2017, featuring the euphoric title track which hit number one on the Billboard Christian Adult Contemporary chart. Now Gokey is going all in with his first headlining tour, a 30-date trek dubbed "The Hope Encounter" that will stretch from coast to coast, offering longtime - and brand new - fans the opportunity to get up close and personal with the former American Idol star. How long has the idea of a headlining tour been in the works? It's always a dream to do a headlining tour. That's the goal, that's the desire. But to actually do it is a whole other thing. As my career's been growing, we decided to kind of take that step of faith, so to speak, and just jump out and do it. Now that we're in the thick of it, we have a big vision for this tour and we're really hoping to see some great movement on it, you know? I mean, there's a lot that's going into it - it's a big financial risk. Having never headlined before, how are you preparing your voice for the grind of a full-scale tour? So, at this point...I have 10 days of rehearsal - I'm actually heading to rehearsal right now. But it's really a muscle memory thing for me - as long as I just start singing it and I get into the groove of it, it will start happening. The good thing is that we have enough rehearsals that I should be able to break in my voice and gain the strength. What's interesting is that if you don't keep on singing - like, if I take a summer break - you've got to strengthen those vocal muscles back up.

OCTOBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Your fans expect a lot from you. How do you handle being a support system for so many people? What happens for me is that I have a good circle of people around me. They help pour [support] into me when I feel like I'm pouring out and I have nothing left to give. And they also keep me in check. And I do have people who check on me which I love. Man, I was thinking about this: I get a lot of texts from people who I'm really close with who will say, 'Hey man, I'm really praying for you' or send me, like, an encouraging word. I think that's a pretty big deal for me, because there's some deep issues out there, you know what I mean? Lots of American Idol contestants have struggled to find their way or find their niche after the show, but you seem to have kept your head above water. Thank you. Man, you know, I got dropped by my first record label and I went silent for a few years and that was tough. It was tough to be like, well, all right, here I am - I have no record label and I really hope that God can do something. And to get signed by a record label that had a lot of success - my last record label - that ultimately set me up with this record label. That's the icing on the cake, because I don't know how many Idols have had a rebound like I have. Out of all the success in my career, I'm living at the top of it right now. Speaking of moving up - and forward - it's hard not to notice that all of your album titles notate either upward or forward movement. You're obviously a very optimistic person, but you've also dealt with a lot of tragedy. Are you trying to project that good things will happen with these titles? Yes. For instance, there are times when you're just not going to feel like getting up and moving forward but it's the best thing for you. If you don't, you will go to a very, very, very dark place. I've dealt with mental health issues - even been diagnosed OCD [obsessive compulsive disorder], you know? Most people associate it with people doing different rituals, but it's all because of fear. Since I was a kid, I was scared, so you try to control different outcomes. But there's a book called Switch on Your Brain that I read that really helped me. If you choose an action - even if you don't feel like it - the feelings will come. So for instance, if you're in a marriage and you don't love your spouse anymore, but yet you choose to love them, the feelings will follow. But if you always follow your feelings, it's just going to take you to a dark place and you're always going to be on a rollercoaster ride. So, I think there's something to be said about writing songs that have that forward and upward movement because I want my feelings to have that when I don't feel that. And if I tell myself that and live it and breathe it, it will happen. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com or dannygokeymusic.com.

Evansville

PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS

Vectren''s Opening Night Halloween Bash VIC TO RY T H E AT R E | OCT OB ER 27 | 7 P. M .

The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra's 2018-2019 season is now in full swing, having kicked off with a Classics Series performance of Beethoven, Brahms & Bluegrass featuring violin virtuoso Tessa Lark on September 29. But it's time to shift gears as the EPO prepares for the opening Pops Series concert - a spooky Halloween Bash full of thrills and chills that's sure to put you in the holiday mood.

"a spooky Halloween Bash full of thrills and chills" Highlights of the October 27 performance include Russell Peck’s The Thrill of the Orchestra, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, Edvard Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King, and Paul Dukas’ Sorcerer’s Apprentice, as well as tunes from Psycho and other favorite Halloween movie scores. Interestingly, EPO conductor Maestro Savia has a personal connection to Peck's piece, having commissioned the work several decades ago when he was leading the Florida Symphony. There was even a change in the title to fit the late October mood. "Shortly after we premiered Thrill of the Orchestra in Orlando at the Florida Symphony’s Youth Concerts back in the mid-1980s, we adapted it for a Halloween concert," he explains. "Russell changed the narration a little, performed it as Dracula with a heavy Transylvanian accent. The Halloween version, therefore, has a “chilling” feel to it. The title change to Chill of the Orchestra was suggested by Russell. [But] I think from here on out we will keep it "Thrill." The EPO welcomes patrons to come dressed in their scariest costume or simply come as you are - either way, it's guaranteed to be a blast for the whole family Looking ahead to November... The EPO pays homage to the late, great American composer Leonard Bernstein with a Classics Series performance of West Side Story. A modern day retelling of the story of Romeo & Juliet through the rival gangs of New York City’s Jets and Sharks, this universally-beloved musical has never lost its charm, appealing to theater fans of all ages. For tickets and more info, visit evansvillephilharmonic.org. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2018 | SPECIAL FEATURE

2018 - 2019 SEASON New head coach Ian Moran on puck possession, creating a winning culture, community involvement and more Last season was an exciting one for the Evansville Thunderbolts as the city's professional hockey team earned a playoff berth, marking a significant turnaround from the previous year and delighting SPHL fans that flocked to the Ford Center to celebrate each victory. Naturally, expectations are high as the squad prepares to take the ice on October 20 against the Huntsville Havoc for the 2018-2019 season home opener; however, there will be a new leader on the sidelines. Having accepted a head coaching position with the ECHL, Jeff Pyle has handed the reins over to former NHL player Ian Moran who brings a wealth of experience to the table - not to mention a steely determination to maintain the Thunderbolts' upward trajectory. How did your decision to take over as the new Thunderbolts head coach play out? This past year was my 10th year being retired from when I was playing [in the NHL]. When I first retired, I was offered some jobs

with NHL teams to be in player development or be an assistant coach. But family-wise, it wasn't the right time to do it. I've got four kids; they were all young. So basically this past year, in February of 2018, my wife and I were out to dinner and she said, you know, 10 years out, if you're going to do it, this is the time to pursue it hard. So, I started there and went through my network and called everybody I knew and let them know that I was serious and wanted to do it - that my wife and kids are going to stay back in the Boston area and I'm willing to move and figure out how this whole thing's going to work. I started interviewing with the Thunderbolts around July 4th; eventually, they offered me the job and I jumped at it. It's a great situation - to be here and be involved with all aspects of operations. It just seemed like a fantastic opportunity and Evansville really is a great town - everybody I have met has been awesome and been helpful. Coach Pyle set a high standard. How will you approach your new position?

Obviously, Jeff did a great job - the turnaround from year one to year two was pretty incredible. I mean, I've just talked to the guys about how he liked to play. I'm not going to say it's going to be a different style - it will be very structured on our end. We'll build off trying to take away time and space when creating a transition and the transition will be the weak side "D" jumping up as much as possible. The teams I played for...we were a puck possession team. We didn't dump the puck a whole lot; we liked to keep the puck and try to make plays, and if we didn't have a play, we didn't have a problem with creating a regroup. So, I'm going to try and get the guys to do that; it's more fun to play with the puck than to play without it. I'd like the guys to be creative and try to make plays. That doesn't mean come down and try to put it through somebody's feet or toe drag somebody every time you do it. There are places on the ice where you have to make the right decision. But in general, if we're coming up and it's a 3-on-3 but we can activate the "D" we're going to turn that into a 4-on-3. I'd like the guys to know that they can have the confidence and the freedom to try and make some plays and get going. Do you have any particular goals for your inaugural season as head coach? My goal is to have a winning culture and to continue what Jeff built on the last couple of years. I want to get to the playoffs and do well; I want to have a fun environment where the crowd likes to come to the games and it makes it fun for the guys to play. And

truly, I'd like to develop the guys for when they get called up to the next level so they're ready to play and that the coaches know that what we're doing here in Evansville is teaching the guys and preparing the guys to move on to the next level. Will you encourage players to interact with the community? I think it's important for the guys on the team to get out into the community whether it be going to schools or just being out and involved and letting people know that we're here and that we're part of the community. I've said it before - I don't think coming to the rink and going home and playing video games for 10 hours is part of the experience of playing pro. You should come and be a part of the community and get involved. When I was in the minors, we went to schools all the time to talk to the kids and get the kids to come to the games. It's a fun environment; live, it's a great game. Hopefully, our style of play will keep the fans on the edge of their seats. For tickets and more info, visit evansvillethunderbolts.com.

GATRICK'S

750 S. KENTUCKY AVENUE | EVANSVILLE, INDIANA | 812-550-1058

When I heard we had a new Cajun restaurant here in Evansville, I was very eager to try it; it’s been one of the most sadly underrepresented food cultures here in Evansville. Fortunately, Gatrick’s is here to fix that. I sat down with ribmaster extraordinaire Gary Alonzo and chef Stanley Trice to talk about their food and how they went from a mutual respect of each other’s craft to a full-scale operation. “When Gary first mentioned us starting a restaurant together, I wasn’t sure if he was serious or not,” Stanley tells me. “But when he showed me the building and what he had planned, that’s when it started to seem like a real possibility.” Gary has been perfecting his Ribs for a long time, and it shows. It’s no hyperbole when I say these might be the best ribs I’ve ever had. They’re tender, juicy, and full of flavor, and despite the cliché of saying they “fall off the bone,” these really do pull off as easily as possible. But almost as impressive as the ribs are the baked beans Stanley served with them. The fantastically unique homemade sauce has the familiar hallmark of brown sugar, but with a hint of maple. Just like the ribs, the Pork Steak I’m served is also lean, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. And once again, even the side dishes - collard greens and rice and beans - impress almost as much as the main course. If you’ve never had greens, this is a great place to start. I moved on to the Catfish Sandwich, a dish that has been so popular that Stanley has had to drastically up his orders of the fish. A fried fillet served on a toasted bun with lightly-seasoned steak fries on the side, it goes great with their tartar sauce (homemade, of course, and better than any you’ll find out of a pump at a fast-food joint) and some hot sauce. I saved the dish everyone had been telling me about for last: The Shrimp Boil. A traditional Cajun dish, it consists of sliced ears of corn, sausage, roasted potatoes, a boiled egg, and, of course, shrimp, along with that trademark Cajun seasoning, green onions, parsley, and melted butter. Everything about it is perfection; the potatoes are the perfect consistency, and all the flavors meld together beautifully. One of the incredibly friendly servers mentioned that I needed to save room for their Chess Pie. My eyes immediately lit up - I love chess pie. In keeping with the greatness of all the other dishes I’d tried, the pie was amazing as well. I grew up eating sugar cream pies that my mom used to make from an old family recipe, and chess pie is the closest thing to that I’ve found. Definitely save room for it. - Jonathan Gluff For more info, follow Gatrick's on facebook.

IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock

Summer has come and gone, but there's still time to fire up the grill before the inevitable chill sets in. How about giving kabobs a try? The art of the kabob is one of my favorite culinary creations. You can skewer anything and make a fantastic meal out of it. I have chosen a pair of kabobs, hopefully to inspire you to try new flavors and techniques. Pro tip: I typically like to marinate my protein overnight to ensure that it's tender and well-seasoned. If you are using wooden or bamboo skewers, make sure you soak them in water for 2-3 hours! Find more recipes on Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book: The Best is Yet to Come

SEASONAL BEEF KABOB

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •

¼ cup soy sauce 3 TBS light brown sugar 3 TBS distilled white vinegar ½ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp seasoned salt 2 cups of a lemon and lime juice mix 2 lbs. of beef sirloin cut into ½ inch cubes 2 bell peppers of different colors cut into 2-inch pieces and skewered ½ pound of fresh mushrooms, stems removed 1 pint of cherry tomatoes A mix of zucchini and yellow squash

Directions: •

• •

In a medium bowl, mix soy sauce, light brown sugar, white vinegar, lemon-lime juices, garlic powder, and seasoned salt. Reserve ½ cup of this for basting while grilling. Place sirloin and remaining marinade in a 1-gallon re-sealable bag and marinate for 8 hours to overnight. Bring a saucepan to a boil and blanch the peppers for 1 minute, drain and set aside. Preheat the grill to high heat. Skewer the sirloin, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, and squash in alternating order. Discard marinade in the bag. DO NOT USE! Lightly oil the grill grates and cook the kabobs for about 10 minutes, or until desired doneness. Baste frequently with the reserved marinade.

FINN, FAR RIGHT, ON STAGE WITH DIALUP GHOST

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2018 | MUSIC

DIALUP GHOST FORMER NEWS 4U EDITORIAL INTERN RUSSELL FINN CREATING LO-FI BUZZ IN MUSIC CITY

It was just a little over two years ago that News 4U said goodbye to editorial intern Russell Finn as he crafted his final album review and then headed down the Pennyrile Parkway with life belongings in tow, harboring a dream of indie rock stardom - destination: Nashville. Yes, country is still king in Music City, but the population boom has opened the door to all sorts of creative possibilities; apparently even a recent college grad with a cache of super lo-fi demos can just show up and make some noise. At least that's what Finn did, first setting up a Bandcamp page featuring seven tracks recorded old school style - no Pro Tools or Auto-Tune, mind you - depicting alienation, insecurity and a real aversion to social media. Musically, he and bandmate Jordan Smith (bass, keys) clearly have a thing for the Breeders (check out "If You Want to Die," in particular) and other 90's era bands with a knack for engulfing great melodies in an inviting haze of distortion. But what makes the appropriately-named Dialup Ghost stand out is Finn's languid, double-tracked vocal delivery that seems to drift off into a fog at times, most effectively in the singleworthy "Ugly Bones."

That track and the aforementioned "If You Want to Die" began to generate interest in short order, with the latter receiving "Song of the Day" status on BIRP FM out of Paris, TX and the band itself garnering a glowing write-up on the respected indie music site For the Rabbits. Meanwhile, Finn and Smith were busy making plans for the studio, readying 13 songs for proper documentation with a little outside help from friends. Sporadic performances - including at PG in Evansville - helped to spread the word and now Dialup Ghost are on the cusp of releasing their debut full-length which News 4U was granted an early listen to. Remarkably, the band has managed to both capture the lofi spirit of the demos and open the songs up to new possibilities with real drums and amped up guitars adding pop to the mix. We'll be sure to give the album a proper review when it's officially out, but for now, you can head over to the Dialup Ghost Bandcamp page and check out the demos that started the buzz in the first place. Or hop on to YouTube and view the video for "Ugly Bones."

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2018 | MUSIC

stories FROM THE STAGE An ongoing series featuring tri-state musicians

Suicide Sam, a jungle backdrop, a state bluegrass champion, and the Bean Depot in El Jobean, Florida. Sounds about as random as a losing hand in Cards Against Humanity, but it all made sense in a basement on Buena Vista Road in Evansville after an impromptu jam session with The Honey Vines. Always lovely and ever smiling, the ladies were performing a Song House show at Lamasco one Sunday evening. This writer (and musician) was lucky enough to be invited to the after-party at The Cold Stares’ practice studio, and all sorts of music and stories broke loose. After playing for a couple of hours and chatting for a couple more, The Honey Vines had painted a beautiful picture of a rundown post-officeturned-venue and the circus daredevil, Suicide Sam. It begins as Andrea’s family was in the gradual process of migration to Florida. Wirth and her bandmate, Melanie Bozsa, found themselves with several reasons and opportunities to book some gigs in The Sunshine State. On her sister’s recommendation, Wirth contacted The Bean Depot which had been booking musicians. A local bluegrass champion had drawn players and music lovers to the area and subsequently paved the way for these two Indiana girls to venture south for a gig while visiting family. ANDREA: The Bean Depot is in this old historic post office and across the way is this dilapidated inn. It’s basically a Fish Hut with this amazing outdoor stage. My sister, Crystal, went there the week before us and learned about this bluegrass gathering that happens every Wednesday. MELANIE: But what’s the story with Suicide Sam? Wasn’t he a diver?

FEATURING THE HONEY VINES

ANDREA: He actually bought the place and invested in the city. Maybe he was just from there. The point was...the coolest thing about this place... MELANIE: Yeah, I’m waiting to see what the exciting part of that story was. (Laughs) ANDREA: Here we didn’t know what we were pulling up into. Turns out the whole backdrop of the stage is like a Tarzan jungle. You just expect a boa constrictor to be popping out of it. Literal rainforest backdrop. So beautiful. The Honey Vines’ memorable moment of this one of a kind venue and stage was owed to this mysterious Suicide Sam. Also known as Leo “Suicide” Simon (in case you want to look this up), Sam would set himself ablaze at the top of a 150foot ladder and dive into a six-foot pool of water surrounded by spikes and more fire. He singlehandedly brought the circus to town after the city’s founder, Joel Bean - which he rearranged to form El Jobean - was ruined by the Great Depression of the 1930s. Andrea and Melanie shared other stories, one involving a relocated historic home in Ferdinand, Indiana, the attic/stage of which Andrea described as playing inside an instrument. The homeowner, Rock Emmert, noted that The Honey Vines’ performance and other successful house concerts in the area inspired what is now known as the Ferdinand Folk Festival, held every year in mid-September. If you didn’t already know how inspiring these women are, there’s this and a lot more proof. - Lindsey James Williams

UNLISTED OWNER

VINCENNES FILMMAKER RETURNING TO EVANSVILLE FOR BARNES & NOBLE MEET AND GREET ON OCTOBER 13

Along with the unexpected and continued success of Owensborobased Blood Moon Pictures' Volumes of Blood horror anthology, Unlisted Owner is the surprise hit of the tri-state film community. Directed by Vincennes filmmaker Jed Brian and tweaked over a period of four years, this found footage-style, gripping and gory scare fest has been a slow-burner, gradually building an audience both stateside and abroad (including a podcast review from South Africa) and eventually ranking right up there with some of the big budget horror releases on Amazon's DVD best-seller list. With interest in the film still growing, Brian is coming back down to Evansville for a second meet and greet at Barnes & Noble on October 13, a follow-up to last February's initial signing session. It's another opportunity for fans of the horror genre - and regional movie making in general - to speak with the director and get a behind the scenes take on the process of seeing a project to fruition. The meet & greet begins at 1 p.m. For more info, visit lawfordcountyproductions.com. Barnes & Noble is located at 624 S. Green River Rd. in Evansville.

with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to a special Halloween edition of the Podcast Corner dedicated exclusively to the four spookiest horror podcasts I could scare up! Want more podcast recommendations? You can find long-form reviews, musings on happenings in the podcasting world, and links to podcasts I produce at my website: thepodreport.wordpress.com or follow me on Twitter @ThePodReport

ARCHIVE 81 (BIWEEKLY) Season one of Archive 81 features Daniel, a man hired to work in an isolated bunker listening to tapes from a massive archive to catalog their contents. What follows is an increasingly terrifying story of events taking place in a mysterious apartment complex in 1994. Fair warning: the end of season one and beginning of season two feature a tonal shift in the show that might turn you off initially, but STICK AROUND. Seasons two and three achieve some moments of writing and sound design that are high-water marks for horror audio fiction. archive81.com

THE WHITE VAULT (SEASON 2 COMING SOON) A team of experts in various fields is assembled by a massive corporation to travel to a remote transmitter station located in northern Iceland. Unfortunately for them the framework of the podcast is that we’re learning about the events of their time at the station from a nameless documentarian who is using different documents/letters/recordings found after the fact to piece together their experience. One moment gave me chills listening in broad daylight driving down St. Joe Avenue. All of the scares are well-earned moments of horrifying realization earned through proper set-up; no cheap jump scares here. I can’t recommend The White Vault enough. thewhitevault.com

ON A COLD DARK NIGHT (WEEKLY) What better way to experience ghost stories than have them read to you by a creepy/ soothing narrator? On a Cold Dark Night is an episodic fiction series hosted by a nameless narrator who fills the listener in on her exploits (occasionally dropping hints that she’s not strictly human) before reading a scary story. Self-described as “the podcast for horror fans with insomnia,” this is a wonderful way to relive those childhood days staying up late reading scary stories. All of the fun of a good full-production horror fiction podcast but in manageable, ultimately soothing, bite-sized episodes. kristenzaza.com/podcast/

PALIMPSEST (BIWEEKLY) A delightfully creepy yet insightful ghost story, Palimpsest spends season one with Annalise, a woman taking audio notes about odd occurrences in her daily life for her therapist. You see, Annalise has just moved into an apartment in an old house and things get… interesting. A lot of people try to make a statement with horror and mental health in audio fiction; Palimpsest has the talent and thought to pull it off. Season two is now underway and I can’t wait to see how this new main character develops. palimpsestpodcast.com

with Marisa Patwa SPINE-TINGLING, HORROR-THEMED SHOWS AND MOVIES ARRIVING IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN As a “Charmed” child - one who watched the original show addictively, which ran from 1998 to 2006 on the WB - I am thrilled for the new Charmed reboot, which features a spicy trio of ethnic witches: Melonie Diaz, who is Puerto Rican; Sarah Jeffery, who is Mexican and Italian; and Madeleine Mantock, who is British and Afro-Caribbean. Diaz plays Mel, a lesbian and political activist who can freeze time; Jeffery plays Maggie, an outgoing college freshman and mindreader; and Mantock is Macy, an incredibly intelligent geneticist who just so happens to be telekinetic. Although I am not a huge fan in general of the influx of reboots and remakes in Hollywood recently, the CW has done an excellent job so far in taking iconic TV shows and turning them into millennial-sprinkled, fiery and culturally-aware shows like they did with 90210 and Dynasty. The CW is even promoting Charmed as being “fierce, funny and feminist.” I love that this new version is going to explore Latinx witchcraft, with executives even employing a real Latin witch in the writer’s room. And even Shannen Doherty has given her blessing for the remake. (Please excuse me a minute while I cast a spell making Doherty have a cameo.) So get your wands out for the premiere of Charmed at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 on the CW, because it’s sure to be a magical time. Now, you might want to take a date with you to jump in their arms for the frightful premiere of Halloween on Friday, Oct. 19. The popular franchise has produced countless blood-spattering, knife-wielding, plead-for-your-life movies over the past four decades, but this is likely to be the scariest yet. Diehard fans of the series will be delighted to know this isn’t a remake but a continuation of the Laurie Strode chronicles, with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her iconic role. It’s been 40 years since Michael Myers first tried to kill his younger sister. Here, he manages to escape from a mental institution, just to hunt down his sister yet again in Haddonfield, IL. Sounds like a sibling standoff from hell. So whether you are getting spell-bound by witches or creeped out by masked serial killers, there will be plenty of scary screenings for your annual horror entertainment this Halloween.

VHS Pet Pictures with Santa!

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents. CHARLIE : This guy is a bit of an "optical illusion." His pictures make him look larger than he really is! He's listed as a German Shepherd/Chow mix, but he has to also be mixed with some other mysterious smaller breed because he's only 57 lbs. He's 10 years old and appropriately laid-back for his age. Generally speaking he's just a really happy boy! He has gotten along fine with other dogs in his time at VHS, but not so great with kitty cats. He also knows "sit" and "shake!" Charlie's adoption fee is $110 and he's ready to go home today neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped for that price. If you're a senior citizen over 70, also ask about our fee-waived Senior Pets program!"

Don’t miss a Tri-State Christmas tradition! The VHS is host to the longest-running Pet Pictures with Santa event in the Tri-State, celebrating 33 years in 2018. Mr. Claus himself makes the trip to Washington Square Mall from the North Pole during the first full weekend in November each year. This allows families to get their photos back in plenty of time for family Christmas cards! DATES

Friday, November 2 from 12pm - 7pm Saturday, November 3 from 10am - 5pm Sunday, November 4 from 12pm - 4pm *Photos are $25 and include two poses with digital images for your use. Children, adults, and all species of pets are welcome in photos!

Is anybody needing a realistic black cat for their Halloween decor? VHS has plenty! (Yes, we do adopt them out around Halloween.) You know by now that all the black cat "myths" aren't true - bad luck, etc. But did you know that data is now showing that they may not be the least-adoptable color cat in shelters? There just happen to be more of them than other colors!

SCAMPER: Scamper is a lovely, well-mannered girl and she's about a year old. She gets along fine with other cats. You can take her home for the next 15-20+ Halloweens to come for only $40!"

RASCAL: Rascal is another one that needs a home! His name fits him well; he can be a bit of a scoundrel in the Cageless Cat Lounge with so many other felines. But he would most likely do fine with 1-2 other cats in a home environment. He was surrendered because his family was moving. He's neutered, vaccinated, and ready to go home today for only $40!"

ASK THE PASTOR

THE WRITE STUFF

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

IS COMPLAINING ABOUT LIFE JUST A PART OF BEING HUMAN?

One of the things I’ve noticed about my Facebook feed is that there are a lot of complaints. Everyone seems to be complaining about something. The list includes whether or not it is right that you should have to pay extra for extra sauces for chicken strips, whether it is appropriate for certain people to wear certain clothing, and whether or not certain people should be allowed to do something with which someone else might take offense. Then there are those who list every ache and pain, gripe about traffic, or go on at great lengths about how life just isn’t fair. I get that into every life comes disappointment and disillusionment. This is part of being human. We can’t stop all of it and we can’t prevent all of it. But, let’s be honest: at our worst, we still have it a lot better than most of the people in the world. Much of what prompts our grumbling falls under the label of “first world problems.” We don’t have a good cell signal, the car is acting up, the meal we had at the restaurant wasn’t all we hoped it would be. And while we’re grousing about how terrible everything is, hurricanes reek destruction, earthquakes kill hundreds, wildfires burn thousands of acres, and we are just fine. Maybe instead of complaining and droning on about how awful it all is, we could take a moment and realize - in spite of everything - just how good we have it. with Jonathan Gluff United We Stand (Or Sit. Or Kneel) Pt. II I’ve talked about this before, but given the incredibly naïve backlash against Nike’s Colin Kaepernick-led campaign, I feel it bears repeating. But rather than discussing whether or not they’re simply cashing in on controversy (a salient point which I believe is merited), I’d like to address an argument (or maybe “half-baked catchphrase”) that comes up anytime anyone insinuates that America could be improved: “If you don’t like America, then leave.” If you’ve ever said this unironically, you may want to sit for this next revelation: You can criticize a part of America and still love it. Shocking, I know. The phrase is often coupled with, “Well, let’s hear your solution!” A solution isn’t necessary to discuss a problem because it would then cease to be a problem. In fact, the first step in solving a problem is recognizing there is a problem. Which means that we cannot solve a problem without discussing said problem first. Adults should not behave this way. Mature, well-adjusted individuals can use discourse to express how they feel, why they feel that way, and hopefully find a solution or compromise. So who does behave this way? Children. Well, children and adults who lack the ability

OCTOBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

to have a productive conversation with someone outside their echo chamber. Loving someone or something does not require you to love everything about them/it. You can be unhappy with lots of characteristics of people, places, or things you love. I love my dog, but I hate when she barks like someone is trying to kill us all when my in-laws arrive. I love ice cream, but I hate brain freeze. I love my wife, but I hate when… I mean, I love EVERYTHING about her! (Dodged a bullet there.) It seems the irony of telling people to wholesale accept our country just the way it is continually is lost on those who use this saying. How is it that those who supposedly love America so much have such little understanding of its history? The Founding Fathers declared independence precisely because they were unhappy with the government! If they listened to British loyalists telling them, “If ye do not like the colonies, perhaps ye should leave!” there would be no America today. Looking at it that way, those who point out our problems are sometimes the most patriotic. Without them, how else can we improve our country?

TRI-STATE

POLITICS with Bryan Fox

HERMANN VS. LEVCO: Round 3 While we keep hearing about elections at the federal level and the possible "blue wave" coming in November, there's an intriguing local election on the horizon in Vanderburgh County. It's Hermann vs. Levco: Round 3 for Vanderburgh County Prosecutor. Call this one the rubber match. Levco was Vanderburgh County's prosecutor for 20 years before Hermann unseated him. I guess you can say that both of their victories were a result of good fortune. While Hermann was already the underdog in 2006 as Levco was the more-known incumbent, it was a horrible year to run as a Republican due to America's distaste of the Iraq War. The GOP, all across the country - including local offices - took a drubbing. Of course, George W. Bush was our president then. Fast forward four years later... Obama was in office and people were unhappy with the recent passing of Obamacare. The Tea Party was on the rise and - surprise - the GOP was back in business. Hermann won with 53% of the vote that as part of the "red wave" that was occurring all around the country. He also gave a catchy nickname to his opponent, naming

him "Let them go Levco" in reference to the leniency of his office. Hermann, who ran unopposed in 2014, now has an eight-year record of his own - which on the surface is dismal. Most recently, there's the Aleah Beckerle case involving the kidnapping and death of a young disabled woman who was eventually located in an abandoned home. The man who abducted her, Terrence Roach, was only charged with abuse of a corpse, not murder. Then there's the case of Frederick Mcfarland. Mcfarland is accused of killing three people - including two babies - in a high speed chase on the streets of Evansville. Hermann filed a felony and a misdemeanor rather than two felonies. In effect, this could reduce Mcfarland's sentence to two years. One thing about politics: people tend to forget. Levco also had issues of his own when he was prosecutor but they have likely faded from most voters' memories. Therefore, this could be the closest race county-wide in Vanderburgh. Either candidate could win as both have been there/done that in terms of campaigning and experience as prosecutor.

THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY BLUEPRINT PICTURES

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a British soap boiled down to a two hour long comedy of manners, which pays homage in so many ways to a number of Jane Austen novels. With a triangle of unrequited love at its core, it guides its viewers toward an inevitable ending with little surprise, but with just enough British charm to make up for its predictability. Lily James plays an eager writer, looking for her next big book idea, Michiel Huisman tries his hand at a British accent as a struggling pig farmer, and Jessica Brown Findlay plays a young revolutionary during the German occupation of the island of Guernsey. Much of Findlay's storyline comes out in flashbacks, and even though it pulls away from the actual plot of the movie (James tracking down her lead) it reveals itself, little by little, gradually reeling James into a community that will eventually show her more than just a good story. The Guernsey hits on more than just a wartime love story, but in fact points to the foibles of our own hearts, showing us that individuals are capable of occupying several identities, even if, at times, they oppose one another. - John Thurgood

NEXT GEN BAOZOU MANHUA

It's no accident that Bikini Kill's “Rebel Girl accompanies the opening credits of Next Gen, the ambitiously complex animated film based on the popular comic series 7723 by Wang Nima. At its core, the film follows the basic arc of a weak, dejected youth who finds solace in the strength and trust of an otherworldly being (or in this case an artificially intelligent robot) who they befriend in the same way a kid would befriend a dog, the twist always being that the pet is actually a fierce killing machine (think The Iron Giant or Big Hero 6). But there is more to Next Gen than that. We see more than just a social commentary on the misuse of advancements in technology. Nima's comic is fueled by a sense of disillusionment and misuse that is specifically female. Bikini Kill sings about a rebel girl in the opening credits, and that is the character we get throughout the movie. Mai, Next Gen's heroine, pushes back against authority at every opportunity, regardless of age, relation or affiliation. Her rage is boundless to gender or politics. It is, simply put, about her identity. But it is not without cause. Her absentee father pushed her to such an end, and it will eventually take a huge sacrifice on the part of her mechanical friend to show her that who she is relies directly on what memories she keeps closest. - John Thurgood

NINJA SEX PARTY Cool Patrol Self-Released It’s not often one finds a comedy band made up of genuinely good musicians. Ninja Sex Party is one of those cases. The characters of undersexed bumbling buffoon Danny Sexbang and murderous silent keyboardist Ninja Brian are back and delivering some of the best work NSP have ever published, all backed with amazing instrument work from opening-act-turned-backup-band TWRP. With this extra dose of real instruments supplementing Brian Wecht’s talents on synth, Cool Patrol is a hell of a solid album - even divorced from the usual lenience I tend to give comedy music acts.

THE KOOKS Let's Go Sunshine Lonely Cat The Kooks have put out some of my favorite songs, particularly from the album Konk. But I can’t remember most of what’s on a Kooks album after the songs I specifically target for re-listens. I can name tracks 1-4, track 6, and track 9 on Konk. The rest self-delete from my head after having heard them. Let’s Go Sunshine is, according to an interview with frontman Luke Pritchard, the result of them writing a new album immediately after Listen and then scrapping it in favor of focusing hard on making something that is their Rubber Soul. Swing and a miss, Pritchard.

There is only one real failing point of Cool Patrol that stands out after multiple re-listens and it’s the inclusion of two older songs on an already sizeable album. Without even a remaster they stand out amongst polished new songs like "Danny Don’t You Know" and "First Date." It feels like if They Might Be Giants dropped an album titled Ana Ng with a not-remastered version of "Ana Ng" as the star single. Slipping two old songs in unchanged feels dangerously close to fan service AND padding. - Gavin Gaddis

The end product of this re-imagining of the album feels like there was enough creative juice left for 12 good songs stretched across 15. It’s bloated; some songs run together they’re so same-y. I listened to Let’s Go Sunshine for the first time yesterday, have heard it twice, can’t name a single song without pulling up a track list. It’s nice to have more Kooks material; unfortunately it’s basically an entire album of those tracks from Konk I can’t remember four years down the line. Gavin Gaddis

AMY SHARK Love Monster RCA

RICK ASTLEY Beautiful Life BMG

This is the kind of debut album that leaves one shocked the singer hasn’t done four or five albums already. So much so that I double-checked the claim on Wikipedia that this is her first studio effort. Love Monster comes out of the gate swinging and never backs down, Shark’s brutally real lyrics touching on love, loss, and relationships (bad and good) scratch an alt-pop musical itch that I’ve not had scratched in a while. If you’ve been looking for someone who’s capable of dealing with the topics thousands of people make fun of Taylor Swift for not really achieving, Amy Shark’s the person to pay attention to.

Processed, over-pasturized cheese is to actual cheese as Beautiful Life is to actual good Rick Astley music. This is the album version of a bad bigbudget movie: a studio threw money and a big name at a halfassed product and expected it to succeed of its own merit. Astley’s pipes are wasted on bland, boring lyrics and beats that sound like they slipped Maroon 5 a $50 Subway gift card in exchange for any backing tracks they ended up not using on Songs for Jane.

"Middle of the Night" is a rare instance of a breakup song that openly admits that the feelings the singer is expressing aren’t necessarily a good thing. It begins with how bad the breakup was, how it needed to happen, yet the chorus touches on an all-too-familiar pang of regret. One could be reductive and say, “it‘s a song about drunk texting your ex” but in that simple description is something a lot of people can relate to. Something more real than dating a celebrity for two months, then writing country-pop diss tracks, at least. - Gavin Gaddis

OCTOBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

There are glimpses of quality on the album. All tired memes aside, one of the reasons "Never Gonna Give You Up" has remained such a powerhouse internet gag is Astley’s talent as a singer. The guy is a snapshot of 80's pop and this album could have been that: a 2018 take on Astley’s 1980's music. Songs like "Every Corner" are a treat to listen to, but they’re buried beneath bland fluff like the titular "Beautiful Life." Hell, "Every Corner" could have been the title track and the album might have been better off. As it stands it opens weak; the only reason I finished the album was this review. Wasted potential. - Gavin Gaddis

REAL FRIENDS Composure Fearless Records Tinley Park, Illinois natives Real Friends recently released their third studio album, debuting a few songs this summer at the very last Warped Tour. Championed for their fast-paced pop punk riffs and catchy choruses, the band packs Composure with the same energy that fans have come to know and love. In an interview with Alternative Press, bassist Kyle Fasel said the ambiguity of the record was intentional, as it allows fans to find their own meaning and connect with the lyrics. The title track is a reflection of the pressures of being in the music industry, as detailed in the song's emotional bridge: “The walls were built so high, but couldn’t keep their words out/The shelter they provide, only houses self-doubt.” The struggle of keeping your head held high is just another part of being a musician in an ever-changing industry. But while the band has hung in there, their journey has not been without challenges. Taking to social media during the recording of Composure, vocalist Dan Lambton shared his struggles with worsening bipolar depression which resulted in a break in the recording sessions; however, he returned to help make Composure one of the best pop punk albums of the summer. - Kendall Shanks

BONES Living Sucks TeamSESH Elmo Kennedy O’Connor, known colloquially as Bones, is a rapper that has a cult following rivaling that of major recording artists like MGK and Eminem. Known for his style dubbed “emo rap,” the Michigan native is an artist of both quality and quantity. He has continued to produce albums even after backlash over controversial lyrics and critics who accuse Bones of pumping out singles for money and devaluing the merit of artists who put more time into their recordings. With a couple dozen mixtapes and singles since his solo career started in 2012, they all have one thing in common: a smooth transition from trance-like melodies and heavier rap, all accompanied by music sampling. Living Sucks is no exception, but entirely exceptional. The album opens with a mix of piano music and what sounds like a record being played backwards, a testament to Bones' out-of-the-box style. While not something typically found on a rap album, the rest of Living Sucks features Bones’ iconic bass voice and heavy bass. This latest incarnation of Bones is an end of summer banger sure to be the backdrop of one too many college parties. - Kendall Shanks

MOM JEANS. Puppy Love Counter Intuitive Records Arguably the most relatable album of the past few months, Puppy Love starts with a monologue full of self-doubt and self-awareness accompanied by an acoustic guitar. The lyrics are raw and vulnerable, the very furthest from superficial. From Berkeley, California, Mom Jeans. has that West Coast sound that brings with it the memories of rainy beach days and boardwalk romances. Hovering above the line of emo and pop punk, the band captures a following from those who grew up with slow jam 90's music all the way to current day pop punk fans. Known for their live performances, Mom Jeans. treats every gig like a hometown show. Pair that energy with introspective lyrics and the songs feel like they were written specifically for you. This album is no different. The band employs lighthearted song titles, similar to those of early Fall Out Boy. Nowhere else can you find a song begging for a little forgiveness titled "I left my towel at my friend’s house and they moved Pt. 1 & Pt. 2.” A perfect end of summer album, Puppy Love is a fitting sequel to their debut. - Kendall Shanks

PRIMAL FEAR Apocalypse Frontier Records Late 1990s German power metal band is back with Apocalypse. With the screeching guitars and a handful of solos per song, power metal is alive and well in the age of independent bands and new wave metal. The band has attracted new fans and kept old fans alike by staying true to their sound and the genre of power metal itself. That being said, the album is not revolutionary. Guitar solos are always impressive, but the stagnation within the band’s sound is something all too common with bands from the 1980s and 90s. From the start of the album, everything is heavy, fast, and all too familiar. It may as well be a one track album. Ralf Scheepers' voice is as baritone and heavy as it was in 1997. Not to discredit the sanctity of the sound of power metal, but to stay relevant in the ever-changing music world, innovation is not an option, but rather a necessity. If you want yet another album indistinguishable from those at the height of power metal, check out Apocalypse, or just simply listen to a throwback playlist and save your money for a better album. - Kendall Shanks

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2018 | BOURBON REVIEWS

DISTILLING IT DOWN with Dusty Barn Distillery

Dr. Duane “Doc” Kuhlenschmidt and his son, Jesse, the father-son duo behind Dusty Barn Distillery in Mount Vernon, Indiana, asked us to put together our own little single-blind whiskey study, and a (not-at-all) scientific study is as good an excuse as any to drink. In this month’s edition of Distilling It Down - the first of many blind whiskey tastings - News 4U's Jonathan Gluff, his wife Kristen, her brother Sam, and Jesse all compare two of Dusty Barn's products against three competitors, each at different tiers: Top shelf, mid-level, and well drinks, to put them in terms of where they’d place in a bar’s stock. Let the experiment begin! (commentary by Jonathan Gluff)

ROUND 1 - PIKESVILLE: “This one has a really full body on the nose,” I say. Sam mentions that it tastes more like a bourbon, and I agree - it’s definitely less sweet than many ryes. “It still has the smoothness of a good rye, though,” Kristen notes. Once cooled with ice, we all noticed that the sweetness became slightly more pronounced.

ROUND 2 - RYE #4: Jesse noted that it gave off a slightly grasslike smell, pleasant and earthy. The taste was definitely sharper than the first one, but there was something else to it I couldn’t quite place; “There’s lots of corn in that one,” Sam posits. This (in addition to being a pretty cool brother-in-law) is why I brought Sam along: The man knows his whiskey. “It’s so corny. That’s why I don’t like it!” Kristen jokes. I reply that her sense of humor says otherwise. Cue the laughter. (We’re a regular husband-and-wife comedy duo, I tell ya.) ROUND 3 - REDEMPTION: After tasting, Kristen and I both remark there’s a hint of carmel to the smell and taste, but we all agree that it’s by far the least smooth of the three we’ve tried. We all also notice that it becomes markedly smoother with ice, but that it still has more of a burn to it than the first two. “I need a palate cleanser!” Kristen laughs as she pours herself a glass of water. I agree and take a sip myself before...

ROUND 4 - DOC’S RYE: As my sadly empty bottle of Doc’s Rye will attest to, I was eagerly awaiting for it to show up tonight. As I breathed this rye in, I felt pretty certain this was it; the robust flavor, ever-so-slight spiciness, and incredible smoothness confirmed it. “This is yours!” I immediately blurted out. So much for keeping it scientific...

ROUND 5 - WILLETT: Kristen and Sam both really liked this one, but Jesse and I weren’t fans. Take his word more than mine; I was bummed it wasn’t more of the last one.

We each ranked them in order of favorite to least. The results were:

Jesse: 1, 2, 4, 5, 3 |

Kristen: 4, 5, 1, 3, 2

|

Sam: 1, 4, 5, 2, 3 | Jonathan: 4, 1, 2, 5, 3

While the focus was on ryes this month, we’ll be doing the same with other whiskeys and bourbons in the following months. And don’t forget to stop by Dusty Barn Distillery, take a tour, and enjoy some of the best drinks around! The Dusty Barn Distillery is located at 6861 Carson School Rd. in Mount Vernon. NEWS4U OCTOBER 2018 | BEER REVIEWS

OCTOBER BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. METAZOA NAP IN THE HAMMOCK

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

I’ve tried a lot of the offerings from Indy’s Metazoa Brewing Company, and I’ve been pretty impressed with all of them. However, I’m very surprised to say that their shot at a cream ale (which is not my preferred glass of suds) might be my favorite on their current roster. It’s light and accessible just like it should be, but without skimping on flavor or giving in to the urge to make it too sweet. My only resentment is that I found a great summer beer right as fall rolls around.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head rests on this ale after pouring it into an English pub glass. The first smell of the beer brings a nice amount of malt sweetness to the nose. A good amount of carbonation hits the tongue when drinking the beer, with the sweet malt flavors remaining in the finish. The slightly lower alcohol content makes this a good session beer option. Pair it with a variety of spicy dishes.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a clear, Bud Light-looking beer and it does have very similar characteristics. It has a very clean, malty flavor. I do like that it's in a pint can. It says it's a cream ale and I usually don’t like them but this one is pretty decent.

BRECKENRIDGE OATMEAL STOUT

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

Like its name, this one is stripped down and devoid of any pretense. It makes no attempt to hide its nature as a straightforward oatmeal stout, and that’s by no means a bad thing. With a touch of yeast on the nose and malty richness on the finish, it’s both refreshing and robust. It’s complex enough to appeal to the craft crowd but smooth enough to satisfy a casual quaffer. If you’ve never tried a stout of any sort, this is about as good a place as any to start.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick tan head tops this stout after pouring it into an English pub glass and never totally disappears. Roasted malt and a hint of sweetness control the nose. The roasted and sweet flavors continue while drinking the beer, with the roasted malt notes staying in the finish. People who enjoy stouts will want to drink this. Pair it with rich meat like barbecued beef, aged Cheddar cheese or a variety of chocolate and coffee desserts.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is your average dark black beer with a brown head and the usual chocolate and coffee flavors. I really enjoy the smoothness of this beer and was surprised to find that the ABV is only 5%. But maybe that is a good thing because this beer is pretty heavy and you can’t have too many, anyway.

SHINER OKTOBERFEST

JONATHAN GLUFF - 3.5

Despite being Texas’ longest-running brewery (they were established in 1909), the brand made its name with its unassuming yet wholly-decent Shiner Bock. The same can be said about their Oktoberfest. It’s a very decent take on the traditional brew, and all the hallmarks are there: The crisp finish, the notes of caramel malt, and an ever-so-slightly-sweet aftertaste. But it’s a pretty standard Oktoberfest beer. Given the company’s European roots (their founder, Kosmos Spoetzel, hailed from Bavaria), it’s not surprising to see them stay true to tradition.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thin white head crowns this beer when poured into a traditional beer mug. Sweet malt scents fill the nose. The initial tasting of the beer seems to strike a good balance between the malt sweetness and some bitter hop notes, with the hops staying during the long finish. This seasonal beer is definitely worth a try. Pair it with German classics like sausage and sauerkraut or a soft pretzel with mustard.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a clear, amber-colored beer - and one of the best Oktoberfests I have had in a while. It has that nice caramel malt flavor you find in Oktoberfests but, thankfully, doesn't have the sort of twangy taste that some of the others do. This will be a good beer to enjoy this fall while working outside.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2018 | BEER REVIEWS

BOULEVARD JAM BAND disappointed to see them jump on the fruit beer bandwagon. (And don’t get me started on jam bands.) But I have to say it was much better than I expected. The raspberry and cherry are prominent, but much more tart than sugary, and the finish still smacks of barley. If you’re a fan of the trend or just want to see what all the hip fuss is about, this is certainly one worth trying.

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

Given my sizable consumption of Boulevard’s Sixth Glass quadrupel over the last few months, I was a little

PAUL BRAGIN - 2.75

A pink head forms on this dark red beer after pouring it into a tulip glass. The scent contains a good amount of berries. The first sip of the beer boasts sharp

tartness from the berries, with blueberry and raspberry flavors especially coming through in the long finish. Pair it with creamy cheeses or desserts like crème brulée, angel food cake, strawberry short cake, sherbet or vanilla ice cream. It might be more appropriate in summer.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer is a funky purple color. As fruity beers go, this one is pretty good. The raspberry, cherry and blueberry fruit flavors are present and it's very light on the sour flavor. I thought this was going to be a full on sour but it's not. Overall, this beer is not my cup of tea but I'm glad to see something different in the market.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
