increasing student attendance. In addition to DJ McNaughty bringing a more current vibe to the Ford Center, students are also being offered free TED Trolley rides to and from the games as well as the opportunity to sign up for the new Purple Reign Rewards app which allows them to accrue points for items like t-shirts, restaurant gift cards and more. Early signs point to these efforts paying off with more young people showing up than in previous seasons. Still, Aces games are a blast for all ages and December promises tons of fun with a Ball State clash on tap (12/9) and much-anticipated battles with Jacksonville State (12/15) and Green Bay (12/22). Adding to the excitement surrounding the Ball State game, UE is planning a celebration with Habitat for Humanity. The local branch of the philanthropic organization has broken ground on its 500th Evansville home - a milestone achieved in only a handful of communities - and to mark the occasion, a 500-voice choir will perform at halftime. The following week's game against Jacksonville State is Military Appreciation Night always a big draw, according to Peace. NEWS4U DECEMBER 2018 | CUISINE & DINING

IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock

I’m not one that likes to bake unless it's bread or pizza, but when it comes to Christmas, I feel like it’s mandatory to make dessert. Cookies are an obvious choice

CRANBERRY CHRISTMAS CAKE (serves 16)

for the holidays, but they're also easy to burn, so let's stick with something simple that will please everyone

Prep time: 20 min

at your family gathering. Cranberry Christmas Cake

Cook time: 45 min

Total time: 1hr 5 min

tastes delicious and won't eat up all of your valuable shopping time, so give this recipe a try and then enjoy a good post-meal nap! Find more recipes on Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book: The Best is Yet to Come

INGREDIENTS •

3 eggs

2 cups sugar

¾ softened butter

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups all-purpose flour

12 oz fresh cranberries. If you choose to use frozen, thaw and drain completely prior to using.

DIRECTIONS •

Preheat oven to 350F

With a mixer, beat eggs with the sugar until slightly thickened and light in color, about 5-7 minutes. The mixture should double in size. The eggs work as leavening in this recipe, so do not skip this step. The mixture should make a ribbon when the beaters are lifted out of the bowl.

Add the butter and the vanilla and mix 2 more minutes.

Stir in the flour until just combined.

Add the cranberries and stir to mix throughout.

Spread into a 9x13 pan and bake 40-50 minutes, until very lightly browned and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

Once cooled, cut into small slices.

The addition of orange zest or extract is very nice in this as well. You could substitute or add blueberries and nuts. You can also make this in a variety of different types of pans. It makes nice cupcakes or mini loaves. Just be mindful of the baking times of each pan and adjust as needed. Do not be alarmed if your dough is very thick. It might be tough like cookie dough and might need to be pressed into the pan.

With something like 700 in his repertoire - all genres, mind you - he can entertain any crowd, anywhere. For him, it's all in the art of judging the audience. "With teaching, I've learned to read people and respond accordingly," Evitts explains. "I don't ever go in with a setlist - the first thing I do once I'm set up, is look around and decide what's my opener. How can I do what they want and keep making them wanting more?" Recent shows have featured songs by artists as diverse as Conway Twitty, Bruno Mars, Tupac, Backstreet Boys and Metallica. The latter is the sort of "complete curveball" that Evitts enjoys throwing in from time to time to keep audiences on their toes. Evitts, on the other hand, will be on his feet a whole heck of a lot in the new year, with an almost unfathomable regional tour in the works that will take in 150 shows in 150 days beginning May 24. It's all part of his five-year plan to spend less time on the road during the colder months and finally get some recording done in the studio he's set up back home. Indeed, crowds have

responded well to the few originals he sprinkles into each show - like "Señorita" and "The Wal-Mart Song" - so Evitts will put out the Cinco EP on Cinco de Mayo (that's May 5th, btw) and follow it up with a CD release party in every area he plays. And it that's not enough, he intends to branch out into new cities soon, including Chattanooga, Huntsville and Lexington. "I think I can fit in there with no issues," Evitts says. "The culture is what I'm used to." Evitts' packed schedule, not surprisingly, leaves little time for socializing or dating, but for now, he's happy to live out his dream on the road, one four-hour performance at a time. The band has adopted this community approach when striking out into new musical territories, often hooking up with area blues societies and hitting the blues jams prior to actually booking a gig. "That way, when we have a show coming up, people will know what we're about and it will increase attendance at our shows," he explains. Of course, there's a downside to so much band activity: no time to record. According to Gutt, an original album has been on the table for quite a while now, but "we can't seem to stop booking gigs." with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. Each month I'm offering up four bite-sized reviews, so read on and then listen in! Want more podcast recommendations? You can find long-form reviews, musings on happenings in the podcasting world, and links to podcasts I produce at my website: thepodreport.wordpress.com or follow me on Twitter @ThePodReport.

OLOGIES (WEEKLY) Each week the eternally entertaining science communicator Alie Ward (who you might know from shows like Innovation Nation) interviews an expert on a thing. From trees to crow funerals, if there’s an area of study that has a word ending in “ology,” Ward wants to interview someone. The magic of Ologies comes from frequent asides edited into the interview in which Ward quips something, adds a relevant relatable explanation to a new concept, or the editor inserts a cavalcade of pop culture references. Between the fun editing and excellent guests, Ologies will teach you fascinating things about subjects you thought sounded boring and have you laughing the whole time. alieward.com/ologies/

20 SIDED STORIES (ON HIATUS) As the name implies, 20 Sided Stories is a role-playing game podcast but with the added twist of incredibly detailed sound design and good role-players. The most recent arc has the players pretending to be misfit Pokémon trainers, using a bespoke pen and paper RPG system and a slew of sound effects from the original Pokémon anime that are sure to hit some nostalgic nerves in anyone like me who grew up in the middle of Pokémania. Oh, and 20SS has two other completely different finished arcs in different RPGs to sink your teeth into. It’s amazing. 20sidedstories.com

CRAIGSLIST CURIO (MONTHLY) Each month friends Libby and Shira get together and dive into figuring out an interesting/ confusing post they’ve found on Craigslist. There’s a wonderful blend of naiveté and passion in the two amateur sleuths cruising the internet to find mysteries regardless of whether or not they might exist. The entirety of the first episode shows them fumbling for an excuse to explain why one man would have as many items for sale as he does, only to discover extreme couponing is a thing and the whole “case” falls apart. There’s a certain charm to hearing someone without years of journalistic experience sink their teeth into investigative journalism for the sheer fun of it. craigslistcurio.com

IT SEEMED SMART (WEEKLY) Produced by SB Nation, host Spencer Hall spends each episode recounting the story of an illegal thing that happened in sports history that seemed like a good idea to the perpetrator at the time of the infraction. From the story of a man who put his entire livelihood on the line to recreate the infamous cannonball run from NYC to LA averaging 100+ mph to the time an MLB player went through with a monumentally dumb heist to steal a bat, It Seemed Smart delivers fun stories that don’t necessarily require you to care about the sport in question. sbnation.com/a/it-seemed-smart-podcast

with Marisa Patwa HOLIDAY MOVIE SEASON BRINGING BLOCKBUSTERS, FAMILY FILMS, SERIOUS FARE AND MORE

Every year, my family and I go to the movies on Christmas. There’s something so joyous about spending the morning ripping through wrapping paper, sipping eggnog, laughing and shedding tears... and then heading to the cozy theater in the late afternoon, dressed in a warm sweater and ready to enjoy that savory popcorn drizzled in chocolate, the film just adding to the layers of fantastical holiday emotions. This Christmas, filmgoers are blessed with a dazzling array of features to choose from, including Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman, Bumblebee and On the Basis of Sex. For families, Mary Poppins Returns is the perfect movie, truly embodying the holiday spirit. It premieres on December 19 and stars Emily Blunt - a true casting dream - in the titular role made famous by Julie Andrews in 1964. In this sequel of sorts, Michael and Jane, played by the dashing Ben Whishaw and charming Emily Mortimer, respectively, are all grown up with children of their own. Lin Manuel Miranda, the genius behind the Broadway sensation Hamilton, also stars. And for folks who are fans of the original film, Dick Van Dyke even makes a special appearance. Here’s hoping Julie Andrews shoots down the chimney on Christmas Day. Aquaman is the big undersea action movie of the holiday season, with Jason Mamoa of the Superman movies finally getting his own standalone film, playing the tidal wavemaking titan Arthur Curry once again. Personally, I'm most excited to see the fierce Nicole Kidman play his mother in the film, otherwise known as Queen Atlanna. Aquaman hits theaters on December 21. Another great action movie scheduled for a December 21 release is the latest Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee. Geared towards Millennials and families alike, this potential blockbuster stars a powerful Hailee Steinfeld as angsty teen Charlie in 1987, who finds the brave Transformer Bumblebee in a junkyard - an origin story, of sorts. This film is the best of both worlds, satisfying your Breakfast Club nostalgia and your children’s Transformers obsession, too. For feminists, politically-active people or couples who just want to learn about one of the most respected members to ever sit on the Supreme Court, On the Basis of Sex is for you. The empowering film comes out on Christmas day and stars Felicity Jones as a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Just watching the trailer alone will give you goosebumps.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT - DRACO -

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

SADIE: Sadie is searching for the perfect family. She is a 10 month old medium mix

breed dog available at the Vanderburgh Humane Society. Sadie is laidback, gentle, and extremely sweet. She is young, so she will need someone to help her learn what you expect in your home. She is very tolerant so she will get along with kids and other animals. Her

Like every pet owner, Mandi Hodges eventually had to make that dreaded decision. Twice. Both her beloved cat of 18 years and 15-yearold dog had to be put to sleep within a relatively short period, leaving the Evansville bride-tobe devastated. But last January, with the coaxing of her fiancé Drew, she finally felt ready to bring another animal into her home. After just missing out on a preferred dog at the Warrick Humane Society, the couple stopped by the VHS on the way home, where they met Draco and his brother, two super-cute black Lab mix puppies. How to choose? An eerie yet heartwarming coincidence made their decision a little easier. "When I had taken my previous pets to be put to sleep, they had both tucked their heads under my left arm," she explains. "When I was playing with Draco, he did the same thing. I looked at Drew and started crying." Needless to say, the little fellow was soon on his way to a new home where he's reportedly spoiled rotten on a daily basis - i.e., Draco recently celebrated his first birthday with a special cake and present. NEWS4U DECEMBER 2018 | OPINION

ASK THE PASTOR

THE WRITE STUFF

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

WHAT SHOULD WE BE MINDFUL OF THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?

And so it is December. This is one of those months when various religious traditions celebrate holy days. Christians have Christmas. Jews have Hanukah. Some have various celebrations around the winter solstice. Kwanza is marked in AfricanAmerican homes. And let’s not forget Festivus. Central to many of these celebrations is light. We light candles. We kindle bonfires. We burn Yule logs. Something in us – no doubt quite primal – does not want the darkness to overcome us. We want darkness pierced with light and we string lights on our houses, string lights on trees inside and outside, light special lights on special candelabra, line walkways with luminaria, and put candles in our windows to fracture the darkness. Ancient stuff, this. We want light to shatter darkness. We want the positive to overcome the negative. That prompts me to say that each of us needs to be a little more of a bright light in our world. The darkness is significant. Hatred and violence are wide-spread. Injustice is rampant. People are hungry in the wealthiest country in the world. There are more homeless than local shelters can sometimes house. Now, we could just ignore all of that. We could give ourselves a pass, but if we aren’t the light, who will be? If we don’t care, who will? Light? Or darkness? Ultimately it’s up to each of us. Have an enlightened holiday season, no matter how you choose to celebrate it. Be the light that shines in the darkness.

with Jonathan Gluff News You Can Abuse (or_24-Hour News Psycho_) It’s been a few years since my wife and I have been cable subscribers. Given that neither of us care for medical dramas, law enforcement procedurals, laughtrack-addled sitcoms, or sportsball, we didn’t really have much reason to keep it since everything we did actually watch was available through streaming services. So on the rare occasions that I do actually see any cable/network television, I tend to be a little surprised by how much it changes in just a few short years. Case in point: I was at the gym about a week ago where I was a captive audience for said programming. I wasn’t really surprised by how over-the-top and devoid of imagination pop music videos have become; they’ve been on a steady decline for 20+ years. Even the endless string of DIY/real estate/ house flipping shows were nothing new. But what really surprised me was just how bad political news coverage has become. By this point, everyone has heard the term “fake news,” and there can be arguments made both for and against its usage in the cultural zeitgeist. But regardless of whether it’s being used baselessly or not, the news networks have brought it on themselves.

DECEMBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

I’m not talking about their bias towards one political viewpoint or another, but rather the shamelessly sensationalized way in which it is conveyed. For example, CNN’s advertising of the thenupcoming midterm elections seemed more befitting a Don King Pay-Per-View event than a spot for sensibly stoking political interest in the populace. Their marketing team should be fired for such crassness. Fox News isn't any better. The furrowed brow and incredulously curled lip seem permanently affixed to Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity's faces as they mock and scorn every strawman they build. The amount of disdain they hold for guests with opposing viewpoints is astounding, and most discussions seem to end in a yelling match. I know it seems like I'm beating a dead horse with this “civility in politics" topic. I know it's not the first time I've brought it up, and I'm sure it won't be the last. But with domestic terrorism on the rise, I'm not sure there's a more important topic for us to discuss. Extremists aren't made overnight; indoctrination is a slow and steady process, and there is no faster or more effective way to spread it than through sources we should be able to trust.

TRI-STATE

POLITICS with Bryan Fox

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD...

STRAIGHT PARTY VOTING NEEDS TO GO AWAY The 2018 midterms have come and gone. While the Democrats (and the media) were hyping a "blue wave" that was going to occur in November, it never really transpired. The Dems took control of the House but that was about all you could say. There was no real gloating from either side this time as the GOP increased their Senate majority. Vanderburgh County produced no real surprises unless you count the county commissioner race that saw Jeff Hatfield edge out Michael Duckworth by a little over 200 votes. With another election year behind us, it's now time to consider ways to enhance the fairness of the process. I've written before that gerrymandering has got to go. Redrawing the lines to better the chances of one party getting elected is anti-democratic. What is almost as bad is the option of voting straight party ticket. We all remember the sad case of Linda Durham. Durham rode the "blue wave" in 2006, being voted in as Knight Township Trustee despite spending just $5 on her campaign. She was later sentenced to prison for misusing the township's funds to the tune of $70,000 in taxpayer money - which some believe contributed to the shutdown of the Knight Township

Volunteer Fire Department. While nothing that dramatic occurred this time around, the straight party ticket appeared to make a difference in some races. Take the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor race, for example. Incumbent Nick Hermann defeated Stan Levco by a little over 4,000 votes in the countywide election. Of the 30,976 votes Hermann received, over half - 16,143 to be exact - came from people voting a straight Republican ticket. The same could be said in the county commissioner race. Almost half of Hatfield's 28,756 votes came from the straight party Democratic ticket. To make things more fair, voters should have to look at all candidates on the ballot and then decide who they want to vote for. Anyone with a R, D, or L (Libertarian) falls into that umbrella depending on party declaration. The popularity of straight party voting only adds fuel to the notion that America is deeply divided right now. However, if straight party voting wasn't an option and voters were required to investigate each candidate before making a decision, the process would be a lot more democratic in nature.

with Johnny Fletcher Crappy New Year!

I know, I know, the New Year is supposed to be a time of optimism, fresh starts and all that jazz. But in case you haven't heard, I am getting older. With every passing day, my body is slowly but surely breaking down - and no pack of balloons, roll of streamers or fireworks display (FYI, you're scaring the local animals half to death - nice work!) can stem the onslaught of Father Time. No, not even an expertly-planned Ugly Sweater Party (god help me) can stop my joints from aching just a touch more or my eyesight from failing ever so quicker. In other words, 2019 might as well be 2090 - it's all downhill from here. Or... is it? Yes, of course it is. I just never miss an opportunity to mimic my hero, Dateline's Keith Morrison - the finest and most unintentionally hilarious true crime TV host ever. (Or...is it all an act?) Talk about getting old! That guy has the weathered skin of a lizard and the perpetual look of someone who's just seen a ghost, but more power to him, you know? It certainly doesn't stop him from strutting his grizzled stuff in front of the camera a couple of times a month as if to say, "I'm hideously wrinkled and proud of it!" So maybe, just maybe, it's time to take a page from the eternally-catchy Pointer Sisters and get a "new attitude." Or...is it?

NEWS4U DECEMBER 2018 | FILM REVIEWS

BEEN SO LONG NETFLIX

Tinge Krishnan's follow up to her microbudget 2011 debut Junkhearts is a powerful and daring look at life in diverse North London. The title is apt, because Been So Long is a movie about time passing, but unlike films like Boyhood or Once Upon A Time In America, Been So Long picks up at a time in its characters' lives when too much time has passed. It follows them as they try to navigate a world that has moved away from them. Michaela Coel gives a standout performance as Simone, a single mother who has unwittingly isolated herself as she takes care of her disabled daughter. Part of that isolation is a conscious effort to keep her daughter's abusive father away from her, but another part is due largely to her disillusionment with dating. All this is upended when Simone's lively friend, Mandy (Mya Lewis), coaxes her out of her shell and down to the neighborhood bar that was once their local haunt. There, Simone meets Raymond (Arinze Kene), and an extended romance begins. The storyline builds heavily on the world around them. Musical numbers turn a harsh reality into fantasy, and the result is, at times, cloying, but often surreal, taking an overwrought experience of everyday life and showing it anew. Without the musical aspect of Been So Long, it is hard to say how well its plot would stand on its own, but with it, the film shines with brash inventiveness. - John Thurgood

GUN CITY NETFLIX

In this Spanish period piece, we learn far more about director Dani de la Torre's fastidious attention to realistic and stunning images of a 1920s Spain, then we learn about the historical events on which the plot hinges. Indeed, it is not the job of a filmmaker to give their audience a history lesson when making historical films, but it is hard to see so much painstaking attention to detail when it comes to set design and wardrobe, when the plot could be set during any time period or geographical area. As for the plot, we follow a detective, Anibal Uriarte (Luis Tosar), newly appointed from Madrid to Barcelona, as he butts heads with his superior and fellow detectives while falling for a revolutionary femme fatale, Sara (Michelle Jenner). The storyline is tried and true, and for that it is gripping, able to sustain the tension of romance and betrayal over the course of a 126 minute arc, but its depictions feel rote. Even during the best scenes of the film, when Uriarte and Sara confide in one another on the Spanish coast, with the choppy waves slapping the beach behind them, it comes across flat and unabashedly derivative. Even with its 5 million euro budget, Gun City is only as good as its script, written by Patxi Amezcuz, which, in the end, doesn't provide enough light for its talented cast to shine. - John Thurgood

HIPPO CAMPUS Bambi Transgressive Records This album is, in its own special way, a time machine. Between the calming beats and the heartfelt lyrics, it finds that perfect sweet spot where one can get lost in their own thoughts and suddenly an hour-long drive evaporates in seconds. Bambi rests comfortably in the valley of indie experimental rock that can be completely ignored as well as stand on its own as good, enjoyable music. Bambi being a good album in and of itself stands as a message against knee-jerk reactions. On first listen to a given song I could’ve marked this off as another same-y, sleepy indie rock effort, yet there’s legitimate substance for those who stick around. The titular single itself is a fun enough little chill rock song in tone but delivers a powerful lyrical journey of the singer trying to maintain good terms with his friends while also having bad mental health. Bambi is an album that begs to be listened to in the dark at a time when you just want to wallow and not deal with reality for a bit. - Gavin Gaddis

THE BLACK EYED PEAS Masters of the Sun Vol. 1 Interscope What a breath of fresh air, something from The Black Eyed Peas that isn’t empty "I’ve Got a Feeling"-era air-headed club bangers, songs that didn’t age well at all (I’m looking at you, "Let’s Get It Started") or whatever the hell "My Humps" was. Now Fergie is out the door and BEP have put out a politically-charged hip-hop album - based on a graphic novel they also produced - that 1) has an actual message and 2) is pretty good. It’s obvious Interscope doesn’t know what to do with the pivot back to the band’s roots; they made certain to label this album “political hip hop,” which is equal parts awkward and hilarious. God forbid a band actually says something with its first album in eight years. That said, it’s not a perfect album, including a currently unsettled dispute with an artist claiming track five lifts a sample from their song without permission. Given that will.i.am is known for this sort of artistic thievery, I’m more disappointed than surprised. Potential piracy aside, it’s a solid hip hop album that doesn’t pull punches from a band with a huge listenership, which the world needs more of. - Gavin Gaddis

JOHN LEGEND A Legendary Christmas Columbia Records Group I’ll be honest, I chose this particular celebrity Christmas album because John Legend had the chutzpah to title it a paper-thin pun on his own name, which shows either a certain level of confidence or a certain sense of humor about the whole affair. Either way, I respect that. Luckily, I struck gold with this supremely talented musician who easily separates himself from the annual army of middle-aged Michael Bublé clones crooning their worst Dean Martin impressions. Legendary Christmas features eight older Christmas songs we’ve all heard a thousand times over and six new entries to the canon written by Legend himself. What makes this stand out from the mountain of other celebrity Christmas albums is that Legend takes the time to update and improve upon classics. "Silver Bells" is performed with a faster tempo and more energetic instruments, giving an antiquated song a new lease on life as something legitimately fun again. That said, Legend also pays tribute to the crooning period of Christmas tunes, covering "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" in such an old-school way I would swear they toyed with Legend’s audio to make it sound bass-heavy like old-school mics Bing Crosby-era singers would’ve used. - Gavin Gaddis

IMAGINE DRAGONS Origins Interscope Imagine Dragons is the Burger King of bands. The sales numbers show they’re incredibly popular yet for the life of me I can’t figure out why, and I’ve yet to meet a single person who prefers them over a similar competitor. Origins is a monument to how being a titan in the streaming music world doesn’t necessarily mean you have to bring anything particularly impactful or talented to the table. Dan Reynolds seems to have been keeping up his lessons at the Eminem School of Shouting. He’s of the unfortunate impression that shouting a lyric Chester Bennington-style will be powerful no matter what the situation. Between the shouting and a lot of bush-league mixing techniques (including an egregious abuse of layering two tracks of Reynolds’ vocals over each other to give the illusion his voice is fuller and he has good pipes) it feels like if music were a video game he dumped all of Imagine Dragon’s skill points into leveling up beats and mastering, leaving the rest of the band woefully weak. There are a few cool punchy beats and a throwaway song for Wreck It Ralph 2; that’s about it for this album. - Gavin Gaddis

NEWS4U DECEMBER 2018 | MUSIC REVIEWS

COHEED & CAMBRIA The Unheavenly Creatures Roadrunner Records True to their unique sound, Coheed and Cambria’s latest record has the same combination of piano, electronic undertones, and Claudio Sanchez’s voice that resonates above it all that fans have been drawn to since their first studio EP in 2002. The band's longest studio album to date is part of a larger release of merch, including a hand-designed mask by Sanchez, as well as a book written by the singer and his wife. Long-time fans have been patiently waiting for the release of The Unheavenly Creatures, a continuation of the Amory Wars comic book series by Sanchez. All but one of Coheed and Cambria’s records have been the musical component of the graphic novels with each song serving as a reflection of the fight scenes and action within the Amory Wars series. However, even if you don't follow the series, The Unheavenly Creatures is still a supremely compelling listen, sure to light a fire under old and new fans alike. The album tells a fascinating story within itself via the booming narration of Sanchez. - Kendall Shanks

MONUMENTS Phronesis Century Media Records British progressive metal band Monuments have released their third studio album just in time for the midsemester breakdown. With a sound comparable to any band on a Warped Tour lineup and lyrics such as “Nothing really matters/What is the truth?” this latest album is just the right amount of angry to bang your head to, but a little too heavy for karaoke. Four of the five current band members joined together to form Monuments after leaving their own bands, bringing their fans with them. A mix of guttural screams and melodic vocals, Phronesis is the album for rock fans looking to dip their toe in the metal pool without being too afraid. That being said, the album is not anything revolutionary; if anything it's recycled. Not to discredit the creative work put into the album, but it's just another collection of heavy riffs with seemingly no continuity between songs. - Kendall Shanks

TWENTY ONE PILOTS Trench Fueled by Ramen The latest album from band twenty one pilots is exactly what fans were anticipating after waiting three years since the last studio release. The twoman band from Columbus, Ohio first shook up the music industry in 2009 with their self-titled debut. For years fans have tried to pin a genre on the band, finally settling on an aptly dubbed “schizophrenic pop.” With a mix of rap, singing, hip hop beats, and guitar, twenty one pilots brings something to the table that no band has before. Past twenty one pilot releases have featured lyrics advocating for mental health awareness and suicide and this one is no different. Taking place in the imaginary walled city of Dema, Trench is a concept album accompanied by various short film-esque music videos. One of the album's tracks, “Neon Gravestones,” is a call to action to admire those who have survived traumas and rough lives. The song is a direct response to Hollywood films and TV shows that seem to glorify suicide rather than fight to stop it. An album both lyrically and musically impactful, Trench is a must for everyone’s fall playlist. - Kendall Shanks

JIM JAMES Uniform Clarity ATO Records Known for both My Morning Jacket and his solo albums, Jim James has realized a companion album to Uniform Distortion released in early 2018. Uniform Clarity is the acoustic and stripped-down cover of the previous album, providing listeners with a whole new take on this heartfelt collection of songs from one of music's most prolific and respected alternative artists. Indeed, the duality of the two releases covers all bases for Jim James and My Morning Jacket fans. With James’ raw voice accompanied only by acoustic guitar, the uninhibited lyrics are clear and demanding, as on the song “Yes To Everything” - “Oh, there was a time when no was not a word I would use/Though I should have backed away from some things like you.” An album resonating with such emotion, Uniform Clarity is both an album worth paying attention to, but also perfect for playing in the background of a busy fall day. To understand the holistic artistic impetus behind the music of Jim James, both Uniform Distortion and Uniform Clarity are a must this month.Kendall Shanks

DECEMBER BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. BRECKENRIDGE CHRISTMAS ALE

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

While not having nearly as high a profile as other up-and-coming crafters, Breckenridge has been churning out one great brew after another. They take a slightly more festive turn with their seasonal offering this year, infusing their suds with a touch of cinnamon for a surprisingly refreshing winter beverage. Smooth, full of flavor, and clean on the finish, this is a libation made for sipping by the fire, be it of the bon- or -place variety.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A decent white head crowns this winter warmer ale after pouring it into a traditional beer mug. A good balance of malt sweetness and spice notes dominate the scent profile. The sweetness stays during the first sip, followed by slight hop bitterness and spices in the finish. The brewer’s website lists a recipe for cooking pork chops with the beer. Its versatility makes it a good choice for most holiday meals.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a clear, dark, amber-colored beer with an ABV of 7.1%. It's ok and I can taste some of the spices, but they're on the lighter side. I guess when I think of a Christmas beer, I imagine one that bombards you with spices. This is a nice malty beer but that's about it.

GOOSE ISLAND PARKA PORTER

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

Goose Island once again proves why they’re one of the most consistently great breweries with their Parka Porter. Porters are typically great winter beers with a unique warming quality, and this formula is no exception. The label mentions caramel and chocolate notes, but there’s definitely a very pronounced nuttiness nicely paired with them on the finish (which is very pleasantly smooth). Porters certainly aren’t for everyone, but other than the unavoidable heaviness, this is about as beginner-friendly as they get.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A tan head crowns this black porter and evaporates somewhat rapidly after pouring it into a traditional English pub glass. Sweet malt notes fill the nose, followed by roasted scents. The roasted flavors continue with the first taste along with a burst of carbonation. Wheat used during the brewing gives the beer a lighter mouthfeel often absent from porters. People who enjoy rich beers should drink it. Pair it with grilled pork tenderloin or chocolate desserts.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a fairly dark beer and I can smell the coffee right away. I like the rich coffee and nice malty flavor - but I only detect a little chocolate. I would put this in the category of a better than average porter, but I wish it was closer to being a stout.

ELYSIAN BIFROST WINTER ALE

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

For as hyped-up as they constantly seem to be, Elysian seems pretty hit-or-miss to me. Fortunately, this definitely falls into the former category. It’s very smooth and flavorful, with subtle hints of fruit melding nicely with the touch of hoppiness imparted once more by the ever-present citra hops. A crisp, clean finish definitely gives credence to its name; not too light and not too heavy, this really is a great winter ale.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A very thin white head forms on this winter ale and quickly disappears when poured into a traditional beer mug. The scent contains a combination of fruit and spice notes. Citrus flavors hit the tongue first when drinking the beer, with some spices coming through in the long finish. Try this seasonal offering during the cold winter months to stay warm. Pair it with game meats, poultry or your favorite dessert.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a hazy, amber-colored beer with an ABV of 8.3%. I can smell some orange but it's very light. I like the nice citrus flavors, caramel and other spices; it's pretty smooth and easy to drink. A solid seasonal beer.

NEWS4U DECEMBER 2018 | BEER REVIEWS

(and usually great) tasting brew. In this case, it’s softening the edge of a very hoppy double-IPA with a bit of orange. For hopsheads, this one’s a no-brainer - it’s one of the best-tasting India pale ales I’ve ever had, and one that definitely separates itself from the herd.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75 JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

Citra hops seem to be featured in nearly every craft beer now, and there’s a good reason for that - they make for a unique

A thick white head tops this India pale ale and stays for a long time. A burst of hops controls the scent profile with both pine and citrus notes. A good amount of bitter hop flavors dominate the taste at first. The long

finish contains more hops as well as some citrus flavors. People who enjoy IPAs and other hoppy beers will want to drink this while it’s available. Pair it with your favorite spicy foods.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer with a rich hops flavor that overwhelms you. I guess the IPAs are finally drawing me in, because I really like this one. It comes in a pint can and with an ABV of 7%, you'll likely be one-anddone. It's not a session beer for me, but I'll have to pick some up next time.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

NEWS4U DECEMBER 2018 | LIQUEUR REVIEWS

DISTILLING IT DOWN with Dusty Barn Distillery

If you look into the ever-growing industry of small-batch artisanal distilleries, chances are you’ll likely see a lot of shades of whiskeys, vodkas, and gins. But despite their presence in popular drinks such as White Russians and Mudslides, liqueurs don’t seem to get as much attention. We set out to prove these libations’ status as second-class spirits just may be undue. Due to the nature of liqueurs being a much more varied class (and thus not comparing apples to apples, so to speak), we tweaked the rating system this month at Dusty Barn owner Doc’s suggestion. Rather than ranking from favorite to least favorite, each one was assigned a score of 1-10. Our very scientific method of not knowing which drinks were which remained unchanged. - Jonathan Gluff

ROUND 1 - DISARONNO: Strong tastes of vanilla and fruit were noted by nearly everyone. The flavor was sweet with a smooth, velvety feel, and Charlie (another of the distillers who joined us for this round) mentioned picking up a hint of licorice. Possibly the only one on the list I could see drinking by itself. OVERALL SCORE: 7.6/10

ROUND 2 - FRANGELICO: “Buttery” and “nutty” were the two most commonly-used words to

describe this drink, with everyone mentioning at least one of those two. I picked up a very subdued bit of vanilla, albeit much less than on the first, while Sam noted some chocolate/cocoa and I detected some corn undertones. Opinions were fairly mixed, with scores ranging from 3 to 8; this is definitely one that is best served as a mixer. OVERALL SCORE: 6.6/10

ROUND 3 - DOC’S NOCINO: Black licorice was definitely more notable in this one. The nose imparted a slight oakiness, and the taste was crisp and light. The sweetness and licorice were a little more than Kristen and Charlie liked, but Sam was a big fan; he and I both correctly guessed the brand on this one (and he bought his second bottle later in the evening, as well). OVERALL SCORE: 6.8/10 ROUND 4 - EDMOND BRIOTTET CRÈME DE NOISETTE HAZELNUT LIQUEUR: Scores and opinions were really all over the place on this drink. On the plus side, it was easily the smoothest of all, with literally no burn whatsoever; on the down side, there was very little character to it. Kristen and I both felt it tasted like a high-end simple syrup, but Charlie and Matt both loved it. I wouldn’t want to drink a glass of it by itself, but I could see its hazelnut underpinnings being the secret weapon to a mean mint julep. OVERALL SCORE: 6.4/10

ROUND 5 - DOC’S CHRISTMAS NOCINO: The aroma was pretty pleasantly strong on this

one, with swaths of cinnamon and nutmeg hitting you right on the nose upfront. Black licorice was fairly prevalent once more, with every taster picking up on it, although it wasn’t necessarily a strike against it to those who don’t care for it. OVERALL SCORE: 7.8/10

ROUND 6 - CARDINAL SPIRITS WALNUT NOCINO: Once again, star anise/black licorice was at the forefront of this libation, but even moreso than previous ones. There was a bit more of a burn to this one than the others, which I guessed might have been due to higher alcohol content (which was correct - at 39% ABV, this packs the same punch as most liquors). The taste had a very warm spiciness to it, and it mixed great with black coffee. OVERALL SCORE: 6.8/10

There was definitely less of a consensus this round, but given the subjective nature of liqueurs, that’s to be expected. Next month, we’ll be tackling corn whiskeys. The Dusty Barn Distillery is located at 6861 Carson School Rd. in Mount Vernon. For more info, follow them on Facebook.
