WINTER JAM 2019 TOUR 360

But in 2017, the release of Out of the Dark announced her triumphant return, documenting her inner strength and desire to "overcome." Let's start with your shock American Idol elimination back in

Does it bother you if people don't necessarily click with the message in your songs but just enjoy the music?

No, it doesn't bother me. I started listening to Christian music later on in my life and I realized that even if you are not paying attention to the lyrics of a song, they can have an impact on you whether you realize it or not. As a matter of fact, I love to...I mean, like, I've been

on Good Morning America several times singing my music and I love being in front of audiences that may not even realize what they are listening to - to lyrics that are proclaiming. I just feel like that has an impact on us even when we don't realize it. Did the overwhelming success of Overcomer - and presumably, the

added pressure of being at the top - contribute to your period of depression?

Yeah, because the album was doing so well, I just did tour after tour and I didn't take too many breaks. I think just the exhaustion teamed up with my sick soul and not really dealing and grieving and not bringing those things into a healthy place... I think all of it just culminated in me losing it. I think that if I had had a little bit more time and knew the importance of how to grieve in a healthy way, I don't think it would have ended that way. I don't know, it was the worst and the best season of my life; it was a career-topper for me and also the thing that sent me into the deepest pit. On a happier note, you'll be bringing the pop and R&B flavors to Winter Jam, but there's quite a bit of diversity in terms of the lineup.

I'm so excited about Winter Jam, because I love how eclectic it is - I love that LEDGER is going to be on stage, like, headbanging - full on rock and then I'm going to get up there with my dancers, like, full on soul and R&B. I just love the diversity. It's one of my favorite things about Christian music that there's so much diversity but it's all for one purpose - that we're all singing about the same person, to lift up the body of Christ. But that doesn't mean we have to sound the same. What do you have in store for your set? Will you go with the hits or mix it up?

Well, I think that everybody wants to hear the hits, so I'm gonna do that, but it's really important to me to speak to what I've been facing lately: my message of depression and coming out of it. That's important for me to share just because I know in an arena that large they are going to be people who have faced a similar thing or are facing it. So I'm going to be pulling songs from my albums that reflect what I have been through and how God brought me out it. It's important to use my message and the testimony to help somebody else that may be going through that kind of a struggle. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. But for me, with my personality and at this point in my life, I think it works for me great. It has its challenges but it also has lots of beautiful experiences that I would never trade. Personally, where all have you performed to date?

I've done a few cities in Europe. I did all over North America - that's basically all over Canada and the United States. And I also did the South American tour which consisted of, like, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru... and I did four or five cities in Mexico. W I T H

the new security protocols. It's all part of the gig, but with the arena show, what's quite nice is that more often than not, it's more economical for the company to charter a plane for us. We actually travel all together like a small village. Tell us about your featured act in the show.

The main number that I do is called Tournik - it's based on a gymnastics-style high bar. I was a gymnast for many years, but the most challenging aspect of what I do is the complexity of what we call the "images" - each part of the number of acrobatic elements. In gymnastics you have one bar - in the act that I do, we have six bars. And at any given time there can be two or three guys on the bar at the same time - and up to six. We have to be quite aware of our surroundings and keep ourselves safe. Do you block out the crowd when performing?

I mean, yes and no...I think that I've been doing this long enough and I've been a performing athlete in these performances for quite a long time so I feed off the public. I do notice them; I do play to them; I try to perform the best that I can every night and give them a good show. But I am able to focus quite well. Are you able to watch the show at all during a given performance?

Usually I'm preparing for the next part of the show that I will be in. I'm quite busy but I do get a few pauses where I can stop and watch, but that's not very often. They keep us pretty busy. Do you envision Corteo playing for years to come?

Hopefully it goes on for a lot more time - these productions take a lot of money and man hours, so they want to share these shows with as big and wide an audience as possible. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

Your pageant experience really seemed to be a catalyst for your eventual career as a speaker and humorist.

NEWS4U JANUARY 2019 | UPCOMING EVENTS

Pageants have taken a lot of criticism - and some of it's justified but I've gotten old enough to say I don't have to defend it, I just really wanted to do it. For me, I was a rising junior at Auburn University and I became Miss North Carolina. I dropped out of school and for one year, I traveled around the state and spoke two and three times a day. It took me about a week to figure out that if I said something funny, people laughed; I loved it. When the year was over, we calculated that I had made more than 500 little speeches. You can't buy that kind of an opportunity. So, then I crowned the next Miss North Carolina. And the following week I spoke at four conventions. So every time that someone says something about a pageant, I say, 'Hey, you get an opportunity, use it.' It doesn't give you a career, but it gives you some skills which you can use and mine turned out to be being able to make people laugh. Do you have a particular process for honing each story that makes it to the stage?

First of all, I have a system that I use. Speakers jokingly call it "Jeanne's humor journal system" - we share it with everybody who wants to know it. Most speakers aren't primarily humorists - they've got heavy duty information and then they want some stories along with it. I'm looking for stories all the time; if I can find a funny story, I can figure out what it illustrates. So, I'm on the lookout all the time for humor. I even look on a crowded airplane - just keep your ears open. If there's a crowd laughing, try to eavesdrop. It has to fit my categories which I'm known for - and that is you can bring your mama or your teenager and not be embarrassed in the car. President George H.W. Bush famously skydived until he was 90, so there's still plenty of time for you to reconsider bungee jumping in your later years.

I'm not implying that I was a friend of his, but I heard him speak and he seemed like a person you could live next door to. And he talked about his skydiving - he had done it [when he was] younger and just kept doing it. Here's the thing: If you ever hear that I have skydived or bungee jumped - with clothes or without - you call the police because someone has pushed me. No, I would not do that. But that's a great story for me - well-loved. I think it has about five million hits on YouTube. Storytelling is a family pastime - especially during the holidays. If you don't record your family's stories, when you die, you do take

them with you. If you want to pass them on to the next generation, you've got to make sure that they hear you tell it and you put it down [on paper] because you know they're going to mess it up! [Laughs] I do believe that everybody's got these great stories that every Christmas you tell and everybody rolls. For tickets, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville. For more info,

Last June's Food Truck Festival at Bosse Field was a highlight for the band and, not surprisingly, the setlist featured an especially rousing version of "Proud Mary" with Marci holding nothing back - much to the crowd's delight. But one audience member, in particular, was affected by the gutsy performance. "What was really cool about that," Slaton interjects, "was a lady came up to us after the show and said, 'You guys don't know what you just did. Tina Turner

RED RHINO (BIWEEKLY) This superhero audio fiction series features a fresh take on the classic superhero origin story. High schooler Wes Whittman (Jesse Einstein) finds himself bestowed with superpowers that, as the show’s marketing stresses, are kinda lame. With a timeline-travelling scientist (Hershey Wingler) tracking his every move and trying to help him become a real hero, Wes doesn’t get to experience the usual fun training montages the big comic book names get. The first half of season one was re-released as a two hour single file last month, making now the perfect time to jump in - or for an indulgent re-listen before the next few episodes drop. redrhinopodcast.com

NEW ENGLAND LEGENDS (WEEKLY) This is a wonderful example of a show that does what it says on the tin. Each episode, hosts Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger tell the story behind, as one might expect, a legend from New England. Their tagline of “give us ten minutes and we’ll give you something interesting to talk about” perfectly communicates the bite-sized fun it brings. Be they creepy origin stories involving supernatural forces or quirky old newspaper reports about the impossible happening (such as laughing oneself to death), Jeff and Ray deliver a justspooky-enough delivery with sound effects and music to make this the perfect morning commute podcast. ournewenglandlegends.com WILD THING (BETWEEN SEASONS) Wild Thing is a nonfiction special interest podcast about “society, science, and Sasquatch.” That’s right, it’s a Bigfoot podcast. But, unlike the scores of television shows and documentaries, Wild Thing doesn’t contain the narrative that they’ll somehow find a Sasquatch by the final episode. Instead, journalist Lauren Krantz explores the various reasons why people latch onto loving/believing in everyone’s favorite bipedal missing link. What’s even better is Krantz happens to be related to an eminent Bigfoot researcher, so her last name gives her journalistic access the likes of which most reporters could only dream of. foxtopus.ink/wildthing/

JOIN THE PARTY (BIWEEKLY) Join the Party is the first class of tabletop roleplaying podcasts; seeing a D&D podcast done so brilliantly makes most other “four people play D&D” shows pale in comparison. JtP plays plain-old 5th edition D&D and plays it well. Every episode has full transcripts on their website, summaries for every finished arc (in case you missed an episode) and specially edited versions of the first episode that explain the rules of D&D to new listeners. JtP is hilarious, moving, and one of the most accessible improvised shows I’ve ever listened to. If you like fantasy roleplay that isn’t a bunch of straight white dudes sitting around a single crappy mic, you owe it to yourself to try Join the Party. jointhepartypod.com

with Marisa Patwa WINTER TV SEASON FEATURES HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING, REMAKES AND SPIN-OFFS

Get ready to crawl out of your snowflake-patterned Snuggies because it’s winter 2019 television premiere time! The highly-anticipated The Fosters spin-off, Good Trouble, will air at 7 p.m. CT on Freeform on January 8. It follows Callie and Mariana - played by Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez, respectively - five years after the finale of The Fosters, as they move to a crappy apartment in Los Angeles and try to navigate life as young, broke, career-oriented, Millennial women. As for remakes, The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico airs at 8 p.m. CT on January 15 and stars Grey's Anatomy veteran Jeanine Mason as Liz. The main difference here is that instead of the main cast being portrayed as teens in high school, they're tackling adulthood. Liz is working as a biomedical researcher and waitress while Max is a police officer and - wait for it - an alien. Deadly Class is a fun new show on SYFY about a homeless teenager who attends a private school called the Deadly Arts filled with students who are assassins. It sounds like Kill Bill meets The Breakfast Club and I am ready for it. This dark new show, which is based off the comic series of the same name, premieres at 9 p.m. CT on January 16. Although it doesn’t have a premiere date yet, the 13-episode Bad Boys spinoff, LA’s Finest, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, is sure to be a hot show for the new year. It will air on Spectrum as the first original series for the platform. Union will play the blunt and bold Syd Burnett who is paired with Alba’s Nancy McKenna, a hardworking mother. Two of my favorite actresses kicking down doors and catching criminals together? Sign me up. So

whether

drinking wine and killing it as professional young women, looking

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

KIT KAT: Kit Kat is a female torbie (brown tabby + tortie.) She lived in foster care with her kittens at the home of a VHS staff member for several months. She’s just a year old and ready for a home of her own now. She’s very sweet! She also gets along fine with dogs and other cats. Her adoption fee is $40 and she’s already

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT - ZIPPORAH Evansville's Louis Sollert spent much of his early life on a farm where he developed a love for animals. At different points in time, he has owned cats, dogs, lizards, snakes and even a tarantula. Having received a cancer diagnosis a year ago, Sollert was advised to look into getting an emotional support animal. "My therapist's been after me to find something to care about, because [cancer's] really hard; it's miserable," he says. "But I didn't want to get any kind of a pet if I had to worry about what would happen to it if I die." Fortunately, his roommate agreed to take on ownership should the worst happen, so off Sollert went to the VHS in search of a new feline companion. After entering the cat room, he stood and waited for a reaction...and waited. "All of the cats were ignoring me and then all of a sudden this cat comes up and just whaps the back of my leg," Sollert recalls. Undersized and a little skittish, but ultimately trusting and affectionate, the feisty furball - renamed "Zipporah" - had stamped her ticket to a forever home. The two new friends are reportedly getting along great - just so long as Sollert goes to bed at the appropriate time. "She gets annoyed if I'm not under the covers by 11 p.m. and starts meowing insistently." Another successful adoption!

ASK THE PASTOR

THE WRITE STUFF

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

HOW CAN WE STAY ON A NEW PATH IN 2019?

The new year always brings those promises we make to ourselves and others that we will somehow improve our lives and our living over the course of the next 365 days. “Resolutions” we call them. These are the grand, but illusive, dreams we have - that we will be better 8,765.82 hours from now than we are today. And, as we all know, the resolutions soon go away. We revert to the comfortable practices we would disown and embrace the ways we would abandon. So, how do you stay on a new path? The evidence is clear: never walk alone. Study after study has proven the truth that there is strength in community. When we join with others in the same effort, our chance of success is greatly increased. I know of a woman who decided it was time for her to run. Frankly, most people her age and in her condition wouldn’t dream of it. But she did. She started walking, then added a little running, and before long she was running her first 5K. But she didn’t run alone. She got a friend to run with her. The friend was company, understanding, and community. It became a shared experience. And she succeeded. You can become whatever you want to be. Find someone who shares your dream and believes in you and you will succeed!

with Jonathan Gluff Oh-No Computer (Or “Let’s Talk About Techs”) I sometimes joke about how future historians will look at memes the same way we look at cave paintings and hieroglyphs. While that’s a sarcastic rumination about their prevalence on social media, a meme that might best capture our current society is that of the anthropomorphic dog sitting at a table inside a burning house, saying, “This is fine." Not only does it comment fittingly on the absolute circus of geopolitics, but also on our complacency with terrible implementations of technology. Obviously, that’s not the first thing anyone would associate with a building aflame, and I’ll admit to using it for comedic effect. But I’ve heard IT horror stories from friends, family members, and internet strangers about jobs both past and present that often concern poor excuses for poorly optimized equipment and software. A customer relationship management program that lacks basic search functionality? “No, we’ve always done without it.” (“This is fine.") A point-of-sale system that automatically selects arbitrary values without even a simple dialogue box asking for confirmation? “Well, you just have to know to do that.” (“This is fine.") Unless a company is large enough to have their own in-house software development team, they likely license their CRM and/or POS systems from a third-party. (There’s

nothing wrong with that, either! Play to your strengths.) These developers thrive on feedback, and most are willing to take suggestions on how to improve the end-user experience. So perhaps these stories share the common mistake of not contacting the devs. However, that doesn’t excuse the glaring faults I’ve heard of from both the employer and developer. If the boom of online industry has taught us anything, it’s that customers value their time. And why shouldn’t they? It literally costs them money, so they will go to whomever saves the most. If a competitor is poaching customers for that reason, why not utilize a simple way to speed things up? It’s not about laziness, or not wanting to take extra steps - it’s about efficiency and effectiveness. The less time an employee spends digging through menus or scrolling through a list is more time spent mending customer relationships and fixing problems. It’s a short-term cost that results in long-term profits. Technology exists for one simple reason: To make mundane tasks easier. Why settle for something that doesn't do just that? Leverage it and leave tasks requiring the unique skills a computer can’t recreate to humans.

TRI-STATE

POLITICS with Bryan Fox

CITY COUNCIL RESIGNATIONS COULD OPEN DOORS FOR GOP

In case you haven't heard - which is likely as it's been under-reported - two city councilmen have announced they will not seek reelection in 2019.

One is former Republican turned Independent Dan Mcginn of the First Ward. The other is AtLarge Democrat Councilman H. Dan Adams who was first elected in 2007. Assuming the Democrats can't get a legitimate candidate to oppose Mayor Winnecke for a third term, this could spell bad news for the party. There are currently five Democrats and three Republicans on the city council with Mcginn being the lone Independent. Prior to the 2015 city elections, there was only one Republican sitting on the council. The GOP made some headway that year, picking up three seats when the Dems had a known candidate in Gail Riecken. With open seats up for grabs and the Dems potentially without a solid candidate, the GOP could make gains again in 2019 - maybe even take control of the council. Mcginn represents the heavily Republican First Ward and his departure will be a definite pick up for the GOP. Don't even look for the Dems to field a candidate. Of course, it will be hard to defeat longtime 2nd Ward councilwoman Missy Mosby, but newbie D'Angelo Taylor will give it a go in the Democratic primary. The 3rd Ward will see Republican John Hayden running for the first time. He took

the place of Anne Hargis who resigned in the middle of her term. If Dems can get a good candidate, this is their best chance to flip the seat considering the 3rd Ward's left-leaning voting history. Vanderburgh Republican Chairman Wayne Parke doesn't like to recruit a candidate in the heavily Democratic 4th Ward for fear of bringing out even more liberal voters. However, this year he might want to reconsider and have Henrietta Jenkins run on the Republican side. Jenkins ran as an Independent last election and has also been a state representative candidate. She would be the best choice to run against longtime incumbent Connie Robinson who might be more vulnerable than previously thought. Justin Elpers, who should be considered Winnecke's heir, has his 5th Ward seat pretty much sewn up along with 6th Ward Democrat Jim Brinkmeyer. Which leaves us with the At-Large seats. With Adams' retirement, Michelle Mercer and Jonathan Weaver remain as At-Large candidates. Assuming Mercer is reelected, that would be one GOP hold. Weaver has his personal issues which could cost him some votes. If the GOP can get two other decent candidates along with incumbent Mercer, the legitimate possibility of an At-Large sweep exists. All of this, of course, hinges on if the GOP can go out and recruit.

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD... with Johnny Fletcher 2019: The Year of the Something or Other Apologies for being so vague, but the original title that I had in mind for this column slipped my feeble mind just as I sat down to type it out. Rest assured it was a doozy - a real attentiongrabber. No, it wasn't 2019: The Year of the Old Guy - not quite that over the top, but somewhere in the ball park. Ah, well. We can still enjoy our time together, regardless. So, what's new with you? Anything? Oh, that's right - I forgot. You're incarcerated. Innocent of all charges, I'm sure. Say, have you seen Shawshank Redemption? According to Hollywood, you just need a mini pickaxe and a poster of a bombshell movie star from the golden era of film and you'll be out in roughly 17 years. Easy. Oh, it just hit me! 2019: The Year of the Year. Confused? Well, allow me to explain. This year is all about the YEAR. You know, the whole 12 months thing and how it keeps cycling around and such. Something we all take for granted. Sure, for one wild evening we get our party on, drink irresponsibly and drunkenly count down to the dawning of a new year and all, but by the next morning, we're too hungover to care. Life goes on and the year becomes an afterthought. Days take center stage because somehow the 24 hour set-up just seems a lot sexier. Yeah, Year of the Old Guy was way better.

OUTLAW KING NETFLIX

If Braveheart had a sequel, it would look like Outlaw King. The story picks up at the end of William Wallace's epic stand against the English monarchy, but where the story of Wallace focused on long, expansive battles with thousands of extras covered in blue paint, the story of Robert the Bruce, the Outlaw King, moves away from cinematic sensationalism and focuses on the grit and turmoil of an era. Director David Mackenzie wanted to stay as true to the original storyline as possible, and highlights the brutality and suffering that seemed almost commonplace during the 14th century in England - and Mackenzie holds true to his word. Outlaw King contains some of the most brutal depictions of everyday life around that time period. Juxtaposed with wide, panning shots of the Scottish countryside, the rolling grassy hills and cliffside castles, Mackenzie doesn't fall into the trope of romanticizing an era but balances the picturesque with the stark, creating a world of complexity and unabashed longing. Chris Pine gives an amazing performance as Robert the Bruce. He is able to convey a level of hesitation and thoughtfulness while also showing the confidence needed to rally the warriors of Scotland to once again stand up to the English. There are times when it seems hopeless, but like all great historical epics from this time period, wit and honor overcome the odds. - John Thurgood

THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS NETFLIX

In this series of shorts, the Coen brothers flex their skill set and pull all the usual stunts one would expect from one of their features. The twists in each story come at odd moments. They jump out of the steady, slow build of a character's struggle. As is expected from the brothers who created Fargo, Burn After Reading and The Big Lebowski, nothing is what it seems. Even the title short ends with a sense of mistrust or misdirection, leading us as the viewers into unknown territory, leaving what we thought we knew about the Coen brothers in the dusty street of a saloon town. The most enjoyable parts of this collection comes from a certain kind of research. The Coen brothers have an eye for the unusual, and it shows in the details. Tom Waits plays a gold miner, and at first it is unclear how he plans to find and extract his bounty. The process slowly reveals itself almost like a tutorial on the extraction of gold. It is so fascinating that when the plot kicks in it nearly knocks the whole experience on its end. Each short is filled with those same moments of misdirection, which gives the whole collection a sense that it needs to be viewed a few times over to get the full effect. As with each Coen brothers production, there are layers to The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and they don't disappoint. - John Thurgood

THE 1975 A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships Polydor Records The 1975 have been a band I’ve only interacted with tangentially. I might have heard some of their music but without the context of knowing which band was being played. A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships presents a wonderful contradiction. The overall sound of this album could be sold either as a timeless record from 30 or 40 years back or a brand new pop album. In fact, it’s almost a shame this is a new album. It begs to be played through a pair of bulky headphones hooked up to a record player, enjoyed in a bean bag chair in a wood-paneled den with unfortunately-colored shag carpeting. It may not deliver the same experience as syncing The Wall up to movies while on a controlled substance, but A Brief Inquiry does reward the listener for setting aside time to fully experience the songs in one run. There are some good singles but the album’s true reward is losing track of how far along one is while the notes flow past. It’s a goal often attempted but rarely achieved and this album achieves. - Gavin Gaddis

MUMFORD & SONS Delta Glassnote Delta is a wonderful example of how reality can remain unpredictable. This passable assemblage of good songs by a mega popular act was beaten in the UK charts by everyone’s favorite Christmas song re-writing lounge crooner. Even with this firm middle-of-the-road status earned by critics, I would’ve put money on the album that’s getting a 60-city tour. Guess I’m lucky I didn’t. Still, I certainly hope the fact that this album is rocking under 60% on Metacritic right now is an indicator I tuned in on a dud of an album. However, there are some fun risks taken, interesting creative paths pursued. "Dark Visible" features a delightfully form-breaking extended segment of a voice speaking directly to the listener in a delightfully dark moment of prose over music. It feels as if someone somewhere, be it a producer or one of the musicians, made it a requirement that Delta had to break an hour to be considered complete. There are a handful of songs that serve more as ballast than helpful contributions, yet here they are. As it currently stands, Delta is a DIY album that asks you to simply choose the four worst songs and end up with a tight 10 song experience. - Gavin Gaddis

MARK KNOPFLER Down the Road Wherever British Grove Records Down the Road Wherever is a title perfectly betraying the tone of this entire album. Mark Knopfler’s meandering pace is reflected in the title’s purposefully vague phrasing. Think of any movie in which a character mopes in a dive bar. Down the Road Wherever is the perfect album to play in the background. It’s seemingly designed to take its sweet time in achieving anything. After what felt like half an hour I looked up to discover I was only five songs deep. It’s a country album without any of the soul or fun tropes that come packaged with modern country and western. When you take out the dirt roads, trucks, and calling every woman “baby” it’s just a dude with a twangy guitar singing about stuff. I really couldn’t tell you what this album’s about and I’ve just taken an extra 20 minutes to write this review than necessary because the music was so slow I grew bored and started daydreaming. I came to this album not knowing what to expect and walked away not really knowing why the album exists. I guess if you enjoy a dude singing about whatever Knopfler’s singing about, this is your album? - Gavin Gaddis

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE QUEEN Merrie Land Studio 13 I’m a sucker for an album that feels like every single movement is carefully thought out. Merrie Land -both single and album features a steady stream of good wordplay woven into music that is just a bit off the beaten path. In the same way the album art shouts “this album is indie and experimental,” The Good the Bad & the Queen’s sound delivers something that sounds distinctly like, well, itself. On a spectrum between the soundtrack of Across the Universe and any given They Might Be Giants album, Merrie Land lands firmly in between the two. Trippy synth beats layered under plinking piano, wandering electric guitar plinked just over a casual drum in the mix. It’s not the indie-est indie rock album to ever indie rock, but you could slap this album onto any given Zach Braff movie and it would seem right at home. A perfect album for the person who wants music that is as effective as background noise in a coffee shop as it is enjoyed with a pair of headphones and an hour of dedicated attention. - Gavin Gaddis

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1/LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. Napalm Records Original Smashing Pumpkins members Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha are finally back after an 18 year hiatus. Projected to be the first in a series of albums, the relatively brief Shiny and Oh So Bright is just a sneak peak of what the rejuvenated Pumpkins have to offer. As usual, lead singer Billy Corgan’s unique vocals take center stage on this new release which harkens back to 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, arguably the band's most iconic album, synonymous with ‘90s rock. While nostalgic, Shiny and Oh So Bright strays from the grungy sound of the '90s often associated with the Pumpkins. Corgan’s typically whining voice is in full effect yet there's a happier tone, lyrically speaking. While many artists of the '90s often sound stale when they recycle their style 30 years later, the Pumpkins have struck the perfect balance of holding on to their roots while still growing. Definitely an album to put on while sitting around the fireplace this winter - check out this subtle blast from the past. Kendall Shanks

EARL SWEATSHIRT Some Rap Songs Tan Cressida/Columbia Records Earl Sweatshirt, rapper and former member of rap collective Odd Future, is back with a new album even more unique than the last. Throughout, his iconic delivery is layered over crudely spliced beat samples and public speeches. The eclectic sampling and patchwork-like background encapsulates Earl Sweatshirt’s sound, a blend of familiar beats with heartfelt lyrics channeling a troubled past, including his struggle with drugs, and relationships with his mother and late father. Few tracks reach the two minute mark, making Some Rap Songs seem like Earl’s stream of consciousness, giving listeners an intimate glimpse into his soul and a feel for the raw emotions that run deep on the album. Unlike mumble rappers that have reached fame through Soundcloud, Earl Sweatshirt’s sound is clear. The album is full of raw, experimental mixing, with the frayed edges of the samples mimicking the frayed edges of the lyrics. This grungy style plays on the sound of rap from the early '80s - a sound that appeals to both younger and older hip hop fans. While not an upbeat rap album with radio-worthy beats, Some Rap Songs provides food for thought - a must-listen. - Kendall Shanks

THE ALPHA INCIDENT Convergence Self-Released Evansville's prog metal masters are back with a blistering, complex follow-up to 2016's equally-sophisticated Odyssey. At first glance, six tracks might seem brief, but in reality, each song here packs a dizzying number of inventive guitar riffs with enough musical twists and turns and time signature shifts for a double LP. Call it controlled chaos. The album's unsung hero, vocalist Michael Morrow, somehow keeps his wits about him, weaving dark, ethereal melodies into the mix while alternately screaming for his life. The duality makes for a chilling, unsettling atmosphere that borders on claustrophobic at times, but the band intuitively knows just when to pull the plug and do a 180. Opening title track "Convergence" fades in via demented piano-tinkling and strings which then give way to a frenzied fretboard workout courtesy of guitarist Daniel Wade. Drummer Thomas VanBibber - a virtual rhythm machine - pounds away on the entire kit at once, seemingly, and we're off to the races. "Extension," "Run the Gamut" and closer "The Time Extension" follow the lead - all head-spinning prog metal perfection - but the unexpected Pink Floyd-esque "Dreamspeak" and "Psychonaut" are a revelation, proving AI's evolution and particularly, Morrow's growth as a singer. - Johnny Fletcher

TENACIOUS D Post-Apocalypto Columbia Records Fans of rock and comedy alike will be pleased to hear that the dynamic duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass - aka Tenacious D - have released the soundtrack to their animated series Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto. Each episode has been crudely drawn and curated by the longtime bandmates, creating a visual iteration of what can only be described as absolute mayhem. Available on YouTube, the animated series takes place on Earth after the apocalypse is brought on by human carelessness. The first season is out now, with hopefully many more to follow. The album, likewise, is a rollercoaster ride of conversations, comedy anthems, and political commentary. You can enjoy the soundtrack alongside the incredible animated series or on its own, but it will undoubtedly make you laugh. Chronicling the end of the world, mad scientists, dogs, the tiring work of repopulating the Earth and overall survival, it is safe to say Jack Black and Kyle Gass may just be able to survive a nuclear meltdown. Check out Tenacious D in PostApocalypto and its companion album to start the new year off right - with a belly laugh and a little Jack Black.- Kendall Shanks

JANUARY BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. 10 BARREL PRAY FOR SNOW

JONATHAN GLUFF - 3.5

I’ll take a hit to my craft credibility and admit I’ve never heard of 10 Barrel Brewing. While far from a new favorite, it’s definitely an interesting entry to the seasonal market. This is about as sweet a beer as I’ll tolerate, so if you like ciders, this may be worth trying. The company’s description doesn’t mention cherry, but I noticed traces amidst the caramel, molasses, and mulling spices on the (very) smooth finish.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A tan head forms on this beer. Sweet malt scents and spices used during the brewing process fill the nose. The sweetness remains with the first tasting, with hop flavors and the spices returning in the long finish. Some of the profits from this beer go to charity, so you can feel good about yourself while drinking it. Pair it with chili (and put some in the chili) or make it a beer float.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a darker, amber-colored beer that's pretty sweet and lightly spiced. It does have a slight fruit flavor to it and seems to be the typical winter beer. I would have scored it higher but it has a weird finish with a flavor I can't put my finger on. That being said, it's a better than average winter brew that's worth a try this season.

METAZOA KLIPSPRINGER

JONATHAN GLUFF - 3

Metazoa Brewing’s willingness to take artistic license - such as turning an originally lowalcohol means of preserving freshness (and farmhands’ sobriety) into a hoppy, high-ABV powerhouse - is their trademark at this point. Even if you don’t mind the inherent bitterness of the heavily-hopped, you may find it overbearing. In my experience, pouring carefully into a glass definitely rounded the flavor nicely. Yet, a metallic aftertaste still lingers, putting a slight damper on the otherwise full flavor.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

An immense white head crowns this golden saison ale after pouring it in a tulip glass. A complex burst of fruity notes control the nose. The fruit flavors continue in the first tasting, with some hop flavors presenting in the long finish. People who like beer with a lot of flavor need to try this. Pair it with a variety of foods like French cuisine, spicy dishes, cheeses, sausages or grilled meats.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a clear, straw-colored beer with decent carbonation. It's crisp and refreshing, and I like the sweet malt flavors and the subtle hops along with the pint-sized can and the 7.5 % ABV. The Belgian style beers are some of my favorites lately.

DOGFISH HEAD 75 MINUTE IPA

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

Debuting in 2011 but discontinued since 2015, this beer made its return last month. The maple syrup added post-fermentation is really noticeable, but it's more than just a gimmick: The usual sharpness of the slightly higher alcohol content is blunted by the sweetness of the maple, while the hoppiness cuts that down to a more enjoyable level. Surprisingly, the maple pairs well with the crispness of the Cascade hops, making this a great winter ale.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head rests on this ambercolored India pale ale. Pine and citrus notes from the hops control the scent profile, but some sweetness from the maple syrup balances out the nose. The balance of hops and sweetness continues while drinking the beer, but hop flavors become more present in the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs will want to try this limited release. Pair it with hamburgers, grilled meats and avocado.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a clear, amber-colored IPA with solid grapefruit and pine flavors. Better yet, it doesn't have the intense bitterness often associated with IPAs. A light bitterness did linger a bit on the tongue for a while but I liked it. As an added bonus, a 7.5 % ABV gives you a little bang for your buck.

3 FLOYDS ALPHA KLAUS

perfect for this time of year. The prevailing nuttiness of roasted chestnuts is to be expected in a winter brew, but the buttery flourish imparts a nice, semi-sweet warmth to the dark, smoky tones, making for a concoction both flavorful and smooth. A few of these can turn even the grouchiest cold weather-hater into a fan of winter.

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

Munster, Indiana’s 3 Floyds has winterized their self-proclaimed flagship, the everpopular Alpha King, and the results are

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A decent tan head tops this black porter when poured into an English pub glass. Sweetness from the malt and Mexican sugar fills the nose, along with more hops than most

porters. Roasted malt and coffee notes hit the tongue with the first sip of the beer. It all makes for a very drinkable brew that's perfect for the cold winter days. Pair this seasonal offering with your favorite chocolate dessert.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a dark-colored beer with the rich coffee and chocolate flavors like most porters. It almost reaches to the level of some stouts but not quite. I'm not much of a 3 Floyds fan - though many put the brewery in a class by itself thanks to their signature Zombie Dust brew - but this one is pretty decent.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

DISTILLING IT DOWN with Dusty Barn Distillery

For this month’s round of blind tastings, we went with what is legally defined as “clear, unaged whiskey”: Moonshine. Since its legalization in 2010 (along with an eponymous reality show shortly thereafter), it’s gone through a massive resurgence in popularity over the last eight years. But is it actually any good, or is its newfound limelight just White Lightning in a bottle? For PT. IV: THE (MOON)SHINING, Dusty Barn distiller Jesse Kuhlenschmidt kept with tradition and limited our Smorgasbord of ‘Shine to distillations whose grain bill consisted strictly of corn. - Jonathan Gluff

ROUND 1 - EVERCLEAR LIGHTNING CORN WHISKEY: We started off with the name synonymous with many a frat party. (Of course, as always, brands weren’t revealed until after the votes were compiled.) Nearly all mentioned the sweet, buttery overtones, with Jesse catching its strong apple underpinnings. Surprisingly smooth to sip, but a slight burn on longer drinks. OVERALL SCORE: 14

ROUND 2 - MCCORMICK PLATTE VALLEY MOONSHINE: This was nearly the

unanimous favorite, with no finish outside the top two. I noticed a slight amber hue, Kristen praised its clean taste and nose, and Jesse, Jana, and I detected strong touches of buttery corn. Jesse and Matt both noted its full body. OVERALL SCORE: 17

ROUND 3 - DOC’S HOOSIER MOON: Jesse and I both picked up the initial notes of anise/

licorice, and Kristen joined us in noting its blandness on ice. I sided with Jana and Matt on its sharp, persistent burn. OVERALL SCORE: 14

ROUND 4 - OLE SMOKY MOONSHINE: Undoubtedly most ubiquitous, and unanimously

most everyone mentioned the bite on this one. Opinions on the nose ranged from buttery and pleasant to overpowering, but rankings were consistent, with none ranking it above third. (My favorite quote of the night belongs to Kristen: “... takes my breath away more than an ‘80s band.” That’s why I married her.) OVERALL SCORE: 8

We each ranked them in order of favorite to least. The results were:

Jesse: 2, 3, 4, 1 | Jonathan: 2, 1, 4, 3 | Kristen: 3, 2, 1, 4 | Jana: 1, 2, 3, 4 | Matt: 1, 2, 4, 3 FINAL NOTES: Keep in mind that moonshine wasn’t made to be good it was made during prohibition, so quality took a rumbler seat to potency. All should mix very well. Join us next month for something suitable for sipping: malt whiskeys! The Dusty Barn Distillery is located at 6861 Carson School Rd. in Mount Vernon.
