True hard rock fans know that Muddfest is a badass tour featuring some of the best bands of the last two decades with headliner Puddle of Mudd supported by Saliva, Trapt, Saving Abel and Tantric. It's the sort of show that's sure to restore your faith in music and leave your neck sore from an evening of headbanging. Doesn't get much better.

HEARD IN A LOT OF YOUR WORK.
I don't necessarily take a straight ahead approach to songwriting in the sense that...like you said, some of the other groups of my genre. But, I guess that I have so many influences that are not American. My dad was a really great musician and basically, I just got exposed to a lot of music that I thought was cool even at a young age. So, I guess the amalgamation of all of that creates, you know, a non-conscious style of writing. But, I definitely don't pick the obvious... I like there to be layers of cleverness in songs that some people never get and some people get later. I like for a song to always be able to give you a little bit more, the more you put into it as far as listening, because there's so many nuances and details that we work really hard to get in there - subtle and so fluid. So, I guess the attention to detail is really important as well. YOUR VOCAL APPROACH ALSO STANDS OUT -
BOTH YOUR DEEP TONE AND YOUR ABILITY TO HARMONIZE
WITH YOURSELF IN UNIQUE WAYS. IS THAT SOMETHING YOU DEVELOPED OVER TIME AS A SINGER?
I always did a lot of harmonies and on this record I even had [gui-
tarist] 'Bas sing as this other, alternate personality that was on a song called "Wannabe" and it's kind of like there's the devil and angel on your shoulder type of scenario. It's cool, definitely, to have textures in harmonies and make them creepy and not, like, "Go Tell It on the Mountain" - nothing against the Baptist church [laughs]. God bless 'em. To me, my whole goal is to tell stories that... like, a few years ago I did this cover of "Carol of the Bells" but I did it as myself. But even that is a really creepy... a little darker version. I'll save the major chords for Mary Poppins. I want to be able to look myself in the mirror, all right? For tickets and more info, visit owensborosportscenter.com. Generally, we get together days ahead of the tour and we rehearse for three days. We make up a set list… change songs out… try new stuff… We’re doing a lot of deep cuts as well these days. Stuff we haven’t played in years. That started as we geared up for our Beacon [Theatre] residency last year. We’ve played everything from “Dark-eyed Cajun Woman” to “Sweet Maxine” to… at the same time, we always try to do that without dumping the chestnuts, ‘cause people always want to hear those. AS I RECALL, IT WAS A UNIQUE PERFORMANCE AT AN HISTORIC VENUE.
Yes, we played the Toulouse Street album all the way through, and then came back out and played The Captain and Me record. And we did that two nights in a row! We’ve never in our lives played an album live from start to finish the way it was sequenced on the record. It was really interesting… and it was a lot of work. Some of those songs we never played live before. I HATED TO MISS THAT SHOW.
Well, you will get a chance to see it because we have a DVD/CD of that concert coming out - the whole thing. I want to say, in June. COOL. CAN’T WAIT! SO, THE BAND’S LAST STUDIO RELEASE, SOUTHBOUND, WAS A REBOOT OF SOME OF THE DOOBIE
BROTHERS’ GREATEST HITS WITH A NASHVILLE KICK FEATURING A NUMBER OF TOP COUNTRY ARTISTS ALONGSIDE THE BAND. TELL ME ABOUT PUTTING THAT ALBUM TOGETHER.
Everything was done in two studios - Starstruck and Blackbird, both in Nashville - using incredible, emphasis on “incredible,” studio musicians. Mind blowing. Two takes and your song was done as far as the track goes. Everything! I was blown away. It was produced by David Huff. I HEAR YOU GUYS ARE WRITING AND RECORDING NEW MATERIAL AGAIN. CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THAT?
Yeah, we are working on an EP with five songs. We did some cowriting with a producer and are recording in his LA studio. He works with another artist who's very large and tours quite a bit. DO YOU HAVE A RELEASE DATE SET?
No we don’t. [After the tour] we will hopefully get together with the producer so we can get that all polished up, completely mixed, mastered and ready to go. SO, JOHN COWAN HAS BEEN BACK WITH THE BAND FOR A DECADE NOW, ON BASS AND HARMONY VOCALS. DID YOU KNOW HE IS AN EVANSVILLE NATIVE?
Yeah, he told me that. He is a phenomenal singer, and a great bass player as well. He’s got a very high voice, so he doesn’t have to kill himself to get there. TOMMY, THAT’S ALL I HAVE FOR YOU NOW. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME THIS MORNING TO SPEAK WITH ME. You bet. My pleasure, man. Take care!

what I have - every day I get up and put myself together; that's what I saw my mom do. But I operate with the most freedom in life when I am the least self-aware. And I want to feel free. And so when you say, "poise," or whatever you said. I heard it as "poise" - that's fantastic. Ok, now don't think about that too much...[laughs] DO YOU FEEL LIKE PEOPLE HAVE A PERCEPTION THAT YOU'VE LIVED A CHARMED LIFE, SO TO SPEAK? Perception just feels like whatever's beyond six degrees of separation. So that's not really even on my radar. What I do find interesting...well, first off, I have a friend here that's in town and she's staying here at the house. And it makes me laugh because we both stayed up late - my husband's out of town - and she has a television production company; she does commercials. So, there's two hard workin' women staying up late - she's on her computer prepping for a commercial that involves dogs and I am making a list for the spring break trip that has elaborate things like: clean out the litter box, don't forget to update the calendar before you leave. But, anyway, I sat down to work on my list and I lit a couple of little candles and brought some flowers over and arranged them and pulled a lamp close by and she started laughing at me and said, 'do you have to make everything a special moment?' I laughed because I don't even think about it. To me, to make something beautiful or special requires so little investment. You just have to care. YOU GENERALLY CO-WRITE YOUR SONGS. DO YOU NEED THAT CONNECTION WITH ANOTHER MUSICIAN TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN? The best kind of songwriting is therapy 101 - just talking about life, talking, talking, talking and then you go, 'yes, let's let that be the direction.' It's incredible conversation that then produces a song. But if I sit down to write and I'm all by my lonesome, I just feel like I sort of default to the same chord progressions that I know; I get bored. I'm a better co-writer. ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON NEW MATERIAL OR IS SLEEP THE MAIN CONCERN AT THE MOMENT? Chris Eaton and I finished one song two weeks ago; I started doing it live. We're half-way through another one. I've got a songwriting date with Natalie Hemby on the calendar in April - she's a great songwriter. And I'm working on a Christmas song for Marc Martel that he and I are going to do together. It's weird... because when I go to play music, everybody wants to hear old stuff, so I don't feel this driving urge to create a lot of new music this year. I think I have other... you know, the weddings. I don't have a lot of downtime. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

Exactly. You have to answer those questions as you're doing it. You try to figure out what the best way of presenting it to the audience is and that changes from week to week, seemingly. It's difficult to keep up with it, but we have people that are in the forefront of that that try to help us along. But what we do is keep writing music. You do what you do and see what happens. We are still at a point 50 plus years later where we are able and willing and want to continue. So that's pretty cool in itself. SPEAKING OF 50 YEARS...HOW HAS THE BAND DEALT WITH THE INEVITABLE EBB AND FLOW OF SUCH A LONG MUSIC CAREER? EVERY TIME THAT CHICAGO SEEMS TO BE DOWN AND OUT ON THE CHARTS, YOU RISE LIKE A PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES AND SCORE MORE HITS. Maybe that's why I moved to Arizona; I live close to Phoenix - I'm rising from the ashes [laughs]. It goes hand in hand. But, we have never taken a year off; we've always been on the road, so it doesn't seem like it's been up and down. In reality, those things happen for you guys, for the press or the fans more than for us because we're always working. We still play a hundred shows a year. THE BAND'S HEAVY TOURING SCHEDULE HAS RESULTED IN SOME MEMBERS RETIRING FROM THE ROAD. HAS THAT AFFECTED THE SOUND AT ALL OR IS THE MUSIC EFFECTIVELY MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE INDIVIDUAL? If we play the songs right, they wouldn't miss me if I was gone. If the songs sound good, that's all they need. The music is more important, I think, than the individual. IT'S FRANKLY AMAZING HOW YOU MANAGE TO CAPTURE THE ORIGINAL CHICAGO SOUND ONSTAGE. The thing is that three of us - me, Jimmy Panko and Robert Lamm - are still in the band and we were there day one when there were only six of us, when we first started before [Peter] Cetera joined the band. Before we made the first record there were six guys and there's still half the band left; it's unbelievable. The press sees how many faces have been in the band and realistically, yes, there are 10 guys onstage now - seven of the names weren't there in the beginning, but three of us were. I think that's why the songs still sound as close to what the fans remember from the beginning, from the record. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com. The Old National Events Plaza is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

4 cod filets 3TBS fresh lemon juice 3TBS melted butter ½ tsp paprika ¼ tsp lemon-pepper seasoning (I use Penzey’s when I can find it) ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 large handful of minced fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 2 large cloves of minced garlic The juice and zest of two large lemons Salt and pepper to taste
Pre-heat oven to 400F. Mix 2TBS lemon juice and butter. Mix the AP flour, paprika, lemon-pepper seasoning and salt & pepper. Dip the filets in the juice/butter mix and then into the seasoned flour mix, shaking the excess flour from the fish. In a 13x9 inch cooking dish that has been lightly coated with olive oil, place the fish in it and drizzle some extra lemon juice over the top for extra flavor. Bake the fish for 12-15 minutes or until the fish just begins to flake easily with a fork. While the fish is baking, put the fresh parsley, garlic, lemon juice and zest into a food processor and pulse until blended but not smooth. When the fish is still warm, top with the fresh parsley/garlic/lemon mixture and enjoy!
Put a Greek spin on this dish just by adding some mint and cilantro into the chimichurri. Also, if you like a little spice, add some crushed red pepper. Try different kinds of fish. Cod is so mild, but this recipe is so versatile that any fish that isn’t too oily would be good for this dish. Try tilapia, halibut, or grouper, but I would avoid more flavorful fish like salmon or tuna. Just remember that food is supposed to be fun, so enjoy cooking it and don't be afraid to try new things. Just make it taste good!

stories FROM THE STAGE An ongoing series featuring tri-state musicians
FEATURING LEAVING KNOX
OPENING FOR HAIRBALL AT THE VICTORY - 3/9/19
As the members of Leaving Knox will plainly tell you, there's not a whole lot happening in their tiny hometown situated an hour north of Evansville. Yet, the band - Austin Sprinkle (vocals), Tyler Barnum (guitar), Mitch Dardeen (bass) and Tyler Carlisle (drums) - is proud of its roots, determined to bring the excitement of live music back to the Knox County area, a community known primarily for its coal-driven economy and PHOTO CREDIT: MAGGIE WESTFALL PHOTOGRAPHY
stretches of farmland - not for weekend entertainment. After meeting through mutual friends a couple of years ago, the guys started jamming, quickly establishing a bluesy rock vibe with echoes of Black Stone Cherry, Greta Van Fleet and Wolfmother but resisted simply aping their influences. "We wanted our own thing; we really didn't want to follow anybody's footsteps," the band says. "Riffs just fell into place and that's how we got our sound." After an under-attended show at a local fire station that the band chalked up to a learning experience, they caught a big break when Dardeen and Sprinkle drove down to Tennessee to serve as unofficial roadies for a musician friend's show - and wound up subbing in for a canceled act after the promoter heard "Beast," Leaving Knox's brooding, heavy first single. "Right after that we started playing gigs in Clarksville and Nashville - playing at the Warehouse in Clarksville kind of opened up the door for us," the band says. Work on an EP of original material began in late 2017 at Barnum's home studio with new tracks like "Fall Down," "Run," "Mr. Man" and "This Place" taking shape over the course of six months - a busy period for the band that included a coveted gig opening for Saving Abel. After some final tweaks, Leaving Knox's self-titled debut arrived on April 27, 2018, bolstered by a big hometown show with some fellow local bands that drew 400

fans. "That was good advertising for the EP and we used that to our advantage - a lot of people were really excited about the release and we've gotten a very good response rate on our social media," the band says. With a well-received EP creating a serious buzz, Leaving Knox continued to play shows around the tri-state and write new songs for a future full-length, including "Light of Day," a mid-tempo stomp with an anthemic yet world weary chorus that features Sprinkle at his vocal - and lyrical - best, his strong, highpitched tone playing perfectly off the dense guitars. Then one day while the guys were surfing the web... "We were scrolling through Facebook and saw an event page about auditions in Evansville
to open up for a national touring act on March 9 - the name wasn't announced yet," the band says. Intrigued, they signed up, still unsure what they were getting into. It turned out to be a very wise decision. A bombastic celebration of 70's and 80's arena rock with incredible, state-of-the-art production, Hairball has been selling out venues across the country for years - including the Victory Theatre in downtown Evansville. The wildly popular tribute act always makes a point to give back to the communities that support them, saving the opening slot at each show for a local band. Just one catch: groups have to battle their way on to the stage. And that's where this story takes an amazing turn for Leaving Knox. Auditions for the March 9 Hairball concert took place in January and February at Kevin's Backstage Bar & Grill just a few doors down from the Victory. Scheduled to compete in the first round, Leaving Knox came out with guns blazing, ripping through a 15 minute set comprising three originals and a Foo Fighters cover. The judges were duly impressed and called the guys back for the finals a few weeks later. "It was nice to play with good bands and we enjoyed listening to everybody else - it was a cool experience," the band says. In fact, Leaving Knox stole the show - or won the battle, effectively, receiving high praise and much support from their peers in the process. Imagine performing your first official full band show in Evansville in front of a raucous, sold-out crowd at the Victory Theatre - 2000 people going mental in anticipation of Hairball's explosive nostalgia trip. Now you have some idea what Leaving Knox was facing the night of March 9. Still, the guys seemed to take it all in stride. "We click very well and are very comfortable with our songs, so preparing wasn't a huge deal," the band says. "We got our set list down pretty quickly - seven originals, 30 minutes." And once Leaving Knox finally took the stage at 7:30 p.m., it was bedlam in the best sense of the word with fans cheering the local boys on, lapping up their brand of bluesy rock and roll. "The crowd was phenomenal - we had never experienced anything on that level. They loved us a lot and made us feel at home even though it was our first time playing there." For show updates and more info, follow Leaving Knox on Facebook. The band's self-titled EP and additional singles are available on all major streaming sites.

He told me that people had been looking for me for years - people had held up signs at conventions looking for me. He asked if I minded if he told the fans he was in touch with me to see if they might want to add me as a friend or whatever. Well, I was thinking I might get a few friend requests because the movie was back in 1989 - would people even remember me? But I got bombarded with so many requests that my Mac almost crashed. I'm not kidding you. I stood there in tears - tears! Tears were rolling because I was so grateful. And the timing could not have been more perfect because my mom was then in a nursing home and she was terminal and she passed February 4, 2013. So, it was like the universe came together - I'm an only child and it was like somebody up there knew I was going to need a support system. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH VOLUMES OF BLOOD?
Basically, P.J. and I connected on social media. I'd heard his name for a couple of years through different connections - it was one of those things where I kept meaning to reach out and introduce myself and say hello, because he was the executive producer on a friend of mine's film, Close Calls. The time just came when the stars aligned or whatever - I reached out to say hello and said, 'if you're working on anything, I would appreciate the opportunity to work with you' and that was the beginning of the dialogue.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT ROLE YOU'LL BE PLAYING IN DEVIL'S KNIGHT?
I was originally set to come on board and be one of the executive producers along with P.J. and Eric. Over the past couple of months, the three of us felt that it would be best if I was actually on camera in one of the episodes as well. I know that the role that I will be playing is currently being tweaked or rewritten.
rected by Jed Brian, its humble beginnings date all the way back to 2013 when we attended the movie's premiere in Vincennes, IN. Over the years, Unlisted Owner was further developed, evolving into a lowbudget horror classic that eventually received the green light for a DVD release in November 2017.
WHAT OTHER PROJECTS ARE IN THE WORKS FOR YOU?
In Savage Vengeance I played a woman in chains and I'm producing that as well. That's a reboot of the cult classic that Donald Farmer was the creator of back in the early '90s that starred Camille Keaton. For Teacher Shortage, I fly out to Houston on March 18 to shoot that and I am acting in it only. I just wrapped 10/31 Pt. 2. Are you familiar with [director] Rocky Gray? He's another Arkansas boy! And there's a short that's getting ready to shoot in Kansas City with a filmmaker named Maverick Bolen. There's also a feature that I have a cameo in and I am more than likely a line producer as well - it's called Awaken the Reaper. It's up for an award at the Beverly Hills Film Festival.
What happened next surprised everyone involved in the production: the film landed in Amazon's top 10 "hot new horror releases," going toe-to-toe for a spell with some high profile Hollywood movies. 18 months later, Unlisted Owner is getting the Bluray treatment, featuring 20 minutes of behind-thescenes footage and new commentary with Brian and co-writer Tyler Landers moderated by Stephen Gill-

DEATH BY DYING (WEEKLY - ON HIATUS)
Somewhere in the middle of America, a sleepy (yet also wacky) town called Crestfall, Idaho has a newspaper, and where there’s a newspaper, there are obituaries to be written. Each episode of this audio fiction follows the Obituary Writer as he talks through the lives and (usually complicated) deaths of now ex-Crestfall citizens. Equal parts dark comedy and screwball antics, Death by Dying scratches that same itch Night Vale did when it first launched while never stopping to take itself too seriously. With a full cast and five-episode first season, it’s worth catching up before the second season begins in October. deathbydyingpod.com
SUPER ORDINARY (BIWEEKLY)
Audio fiction can do a lot with the right people behind the wheel, and Super Ordinary is a perfect example of a show firing on all cylinders. The show follows Sean, a journalist who has been given the exclusive scoop on audio tapes telling the story of Anika. Anika has incredible super-powers but with the unfortunate catch that they’re tied to her panic attacks. SO also comes equipped with an audio fiction all-star cast, including the incredible talents of Briggon Snow and Julia Morizawa as heard on the popular The Bright Sessions podcast. Funny, clever, heart-wrenching - be ready to feel when listening. tandonproductions.com/super-ordinary/
INSANELY HAUNTED (WEEKLY)
This podcast fills an oddly specific niche but does so in such a wonderful way I have to share it with the world. Each week hosts Cassie and Max discuss an episode of the long-running and famously ridiculous Travel Channel paranormal investigation series Ghost Adventures. Each episode talks about a different GA episode, highlighting hilarious moments and never shying away from mercilessly mocking its faults. Be it manipulative editing, crackpot pseudoscience, or host Zak Bagans’ tendency to bully ghosts when he’s done bullying his own crew, Max and Cassie are here to make it hilarious.

THE 12:37 (WEEKLY)
This debut audio fiction series from producer Alma Roda-Gil follows protagonist Val as she boards a train home from work. Unfortunately for Val, she chose the wrong train and now finds herself aboard a time-traveling train run by a friendly, if mysterious conductor named Wheeler (Harry Whittaker). The early plot brings some welcome new ideas to the “normal person swept away by a time traveler” trope, including a frank discussion of mental health as Val figures out what to do once her antidepressants run out. Excellent writing and sound design make this a must-listen series this spring.

They require plenty of exercise outside their cage, just like a dog or cat. They must have timothy hay 24/7, in addition to their rabbit food. If they don’t they can get GI stasis, which is fatal. VHS bunnies are all spayed & neutered which will cut down significantly on nuisance behaviors like biting, spraying, etc. DON’T buy bunnies from pet stores and don’t let your friends do it either! That’s where a good portion of homeless VHS bunnies come from when the purchasers get tired of them. And many of them could easily go home with you already pregnant. Just don’t do it. impact of violence against a minority group. The slaughter of the innocent worshipers at two mosques in New Zealand makes us all aware of the power of fear and hatred. People whose only motive was to gather for the traditional Friday prayers – Jummah – were deemed of lesser value as

human beings and labeled as a threat to others and then targeted for extermination. The accused terrorist who committed these atrocities left behind a proclamation of prejudice, guised as a memorandum on nationalism. In it, he spewed his venomous fear and hatred, condemning refugees and people whose skin contains more melanin than his own. His abominable actions flowed from his fear and hatred. There is no legitimate religion, which believes in the God of Love and Mercy, that condones such behavior. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Humanists, Agnostics – no group (that I am aware of) believes that violence, murder, and atrocity are the answer to fear and hatred. Fear and hatred are antithetical to actions we call “human.” Many times, our fear is based in fiction. We think we know who someone is. We think we know what they believe. We think we know what they are up to and what they are going to do. But those conjectures are usually based on a false image. It is when we begin to listen to each other, sit down with one another, and build bridges between others and ourselves that fear disappears and hatred can be transformed into friendship and love.

“Another week, another mass shooting.” The fact that this can be said in such a de rigueur fashion really is a sad statement on how frequently these occur, and I doubt that many would disagree. But almost as alarming is the slew of conspiracies that popped up almost immediately after the event; before the day was finished, I already saw “theories” (and I use that term as loosely as possible) ranging from a CIA psy-op to an Israeli false flag. I wish I was making these up, but sometimes truth is sadder than fiction. I’ll be the first to admit that there are no shortage of true conspiracies; I’ve said as much in this very column previously. There are declassified documents proving plots such as Operation Northwoods, MKUltra, Operation Paperclip, and many more. Governments throughout history have proven time and time again that we should question official records of events, of that there is no question. What is the real question is when does suspicion move from a healthy distrust to unmitigated paranoia? To grossly oversimplify things, there seems to be three groups when it comes to conspiracies. One will never believe them, no matter what evidence is presented. The armchair detective in me would like to see this part of the populace be more willing
to think for themselves, but the pragmatist in me realizes that they really aren’t doing any harm. Their beliefs (or disbeliefs) don’t really affect anyone, so why should they be bothered? Another group actively searches for objective truth, but remains open to all suggestions. They try to sift through the truth and lies as best they can and come to their own conclusion. Sure, they can’t help but let biases get in the way occasionally, but by and large, they’re open to different possibilities. The third subset, however, is the most frightening - those who posit that every single incident is some grand conspiracy. It’s this group who is willing to look at a shooter strapping a camera to his head while livestreaming a massacre and still finds a conspiracy, shoot up a pizza parlor based on internet sleuthing, or send death threats to families of shooting victims. If you find yourself in the latter group, I urge you to reconsider your motives and your MO. Just because conspiracies exist doesn’t mean everything is. The last thing the world needs now is drama, dissent, and disorder where there is none.

TRI-STATE
POLITICS with Bryan Fox
WILL MAYOR WINNECKE RUN FOR HIGHER OFFICE? SHOULD HE? By the time this article is published, the Democrats will more than likely not have fielded a candidate to run in the mayoral race against Lloyd Winnecke. Thus, the city will have its first ever three-term Republican mayor. Should the mayor get re-elected - and in all likelihood he will - his third term will end in 2023. This would be the perfect time to run for higher office either at the state or federal level. 2024 will be another huge election year with the presidency up for grabs along with a Senate seat in Indiana as well as the governorship. With Jasper native Mike Braun's election to the Senate in 2018, he will be up for reelection in '24. More than likely, he will seek another term and will not face a serious challenger. That would leave the chief executive of Indiana as a possibility. Current governor Eric Holcomb will probably win reelection in 2020 but will be term limited and unable to run in '24, opening the door for other candidates. Would this be a seat that Winnecke pursues or should pursue? Let's look at the positives: First, Winnecke is the mayor of the third largest city in the
state and has a lot of name recognition in the southern region which bodes well for his electability. Second, he has the money. Winnecke can fundraise with the best of them and will have no problem getting his name out in other parts of the state. Third, Republicans rule. Since the election of Mitch Daniels, the GOP has won four consecutive governorships and has moved further right over the past 15 years. Fourth, he's disciplined. Winnecke has always had a pragmatic approach to his leadership and steered clear of controversial issues - i.e., the recent EVPL drag queen story hour debate. The negatives: First, time might be up against Winnecke. He'll be 64 when the '24 election arrives. Not old by any stretch but at retirement age. Second, his wife, Carol McClintock, is a successful real estate agent in Evansville and might not want to relocate to the Governor's Residence in Indy. Winnecke's third term will give us some insight into what his intentions might be. *Correction: In my previous article, I noted that no local media had asked Stephen Melcher why he had switched parties. However, it turns out that the Evansville Courier & Press did, in fact, ask him about this. I would like to give them a shout out and apologize for the mistake.
MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD... with Johnny Fletcher Bowl Me Over Surely you recall when "Blue Collar" comic Jeff Foxworthy introduced that whole "You might be a redneck if..." shtick that has since been coopted by a generation of hacks. Well, if you can stomach it, I'd like to add my name to that sad list of comedic wannabes by putting my own spin on his signature routine. And it goes something like this: "You might be getting old if... you love to watch bowling on TV." Yup, I admit it. Not sure why exactly, but I now find myself glued to the set on a weekly basis, following the PBA (Professional Bowlers Association, of course) tour as it winds its way around the country. How to explain this other than advancing age? I mean, I've always enjoyed bowling; truth be told, I even bowled in leagues at Arc Lanes during my childhood. But somehow I always had the good sense not to spend hours on the couch cheering on a bunch of alley cats. If I had to pin this apparent lack or loss of judgment on something or someone, more accurately, it'd be Jason Belmonte - or "Belmo" as he's affectionately known on the PBA tour. Currently the top bowler in the world, the extremely affable Australian revolutionized the two-handed approach that's been gaining steam of late. In fact, the second leading money winner, Anthony Simonsen, throws a mean two-hander as well. And then there's Kyle "Afro Fish" Troup, tour fan favorite and all-around jester, who also employs the "new style." Damn it, I'm hooked!

THE BREAKER UPPERERS NETFLIX
The Breaker Upperers is a movie of stereotypes, but it's hard to say just how stereotypical most of the characters in this film really are, because for all its generalities, one thing that Madeleine Sami and Jackie Van Beek manage to capture with their debut feature is just how strange New Zealand seems to be. The conceit of the film leaves us as viewers wanting more. Sami and Van Beek play characters who own a company that provides its clients with a service that gives the film its title. They facilitate break ups. The concept has potential, but in practice it falls apart fairly quickly. They impersonate police officers, make false reports, fake a few deaths and eventually the film's plausibility is thrown to the wayside for a few quick jokes. Regardless, it allows Sami and Van Beek the opportunity to shine as a comedic duo. Their playful banter keeps the flow of the movie going at a steady pace and focuses on female friendship and camaraderie as the core message of the film. When their business hits hard times, they are forced to reconcile with their own faults and examine past relationships, romantic and platonic, and in doing so, discover who they really are and what they mean to each other. The Breaker Upperers is an important alternative to a Hollywood bromance. - John Thurgood

WALK. RIDE. RODEO. NETFLIX
In this adaptation of a novel based on a true story, Amberley Snyder attempts the impossible. She is a barrel racer paralyzed at the start of a promising career. As the title suggests, she gives herself three goals. First, she is going to walk. Then she is going to ride her horse, Power, again. And finally, she is going to re-enter the ranks of barrel racing at a rodeo called The American, which is often referred to by rodeo-goers as The Super Bowl of rodeos. This impossible task is paralleled by the impossible task of reenacting Amberley Snyder's true life story. Spencer Locke does her best to capture 19-year-old Snyder before the accident, during and after, but the subject matter is too much for her to carry on her own. Missi Pyle and Bailey Chase play supporting roles as Snyder's parents, but their screentime adds little complexity. They offer mostly platitudes that move the plot forward without diving much further beneath the surface. There are moments throughout the film that are filled with tension and ripe with discovery, but the voice of the picture often moves over these moments too quickly or fails to understand the underlying significance of the scene. It seems as if director Conor Allyn couldn't make up his mind about what direction to take with this film, but instead chose to walk the line between a handful of themes and subjects. Without that steady focus, Walk. Ride. Rodeo. falls flat. - John Thurgood

AVRIL LAVIGNE Head Above Water BMG Five years in the making, Head Above Water serves as Avril Lavigne’s musical outlet for her battle with Lyme disease, and it shows. The titular single is nothing if not an anthem for determination, about fighting hard, about finding help. It’s not surprising an album that’s more focused on emotion and message than catchy beats/singles has underperformed commercially, but that doesn’t make the music-buying public’s muted response to her evolution any less frustrating. What's left of Lavigne's early '00s sound shines through in the punchy "Dumb Blonde" featuring Nikki Minaj. With loud, distorted electric guitar driving a repetitive chorus and a little bit of APRILing band-esque drums thrown in for good measure to frame the Minaj rap break, it's a made-for-radio single with a dash of good message. It’s a shame the rest of the album comes packaged with even more message. If you’re looking for a pop album that feels real, regardless of your opinions on Lavigne, this one is a good place to start. Hop on the bandwagon now before some college kid makes a post about it being “criminally ignored in its time” in 10 years. - Gavin Gaddis
MEGHAN TRAINOR The Love Train Epic Records I came across this EP in a frustrating place thanks to the internet. While the music contained within is genuinely good Trainor fare, that’s not what went viral. The mindbogglingly faux-twee-Instagram-influencer press release that’s been making the rounds online sells The Love Train as a cheekily naughty collection of songs Trainor fans will want to keep ready for their postValentine’s bedroom adventures, selling the heart-eyed single "All The Ways" as being about all the ways Trainor wants to sex up her new husband. That’s… not what the song’s about? It’s like the ghost of the ill-advised "All About That Bass" has doomed Trainor, a talented woman who’s a damn good singer and fond of the occasional pastel, to be this PG-13 pop icon parents can love but kids can also feel rebellious following, too, because she mentions sex. A damn shame. The Love Train is a wonderful little EP, including "Marry Me" which is cool, but even cooler when one knows Trainor wrote it to walk down the aisle to at her own wedding. Ignore the god-awful press release, The Love Train is a genuinely fun, unapologetically saccharine love-song EP. - Gavin Gaddis

GARY CLARK, JR. This Land Warner Bros. Records With This Land, vaunted blues guitarist Gary Clark, Jr. delivers a brutally honest take on being black in contemporary America. The album's titular single opens strong with Clark recounting being told: “go back where you come from.” Name-dropping Trump on record isn’t exactly fresh or risky to do in 2019 but there’s something particularly appropriate about working frank discussions of casual racism through blues rock, especially from a Texas-based singer. According to Pitchfork, "This Land" was in part sparked by a neighbor passive-aggressively commenting how they were amazed a young black man could own such a large ranch in rural Austin, Texas. The embers of that inciting incident can be heard throughout the album; however, Clark has let the initial heat flare out. If a diss track or freestyle rap is pure fire, immediate and scalding but temporary, Clark’s performance has matured into red hot coals consistent, plentiful, useful. The emotions of this album feel true to the singer, the musical version of winning that fake argument in the shower where you have collected all of your thoughts and deliver an air-tight defense. - Gavin Gaddis
LOUIE ZONG Nod Self-Released "A cheerful guy making cheerful tunes," Zong returns in full instrumental force with this brilliant EP of songs that, as the title suggests, inspires the listener to nod. For those unfamiliar with this multi-talented artist's more chilled-out work, this EP could best be described as a series of fictional outro songs for anime you wish you’d seen. Zong makes good use of alternating channels this time around, moving instruments from ear to ear to reward the astute headphone listeners without punishing those listening in a less-clear environment. Usually binaural audio sounds like hot garbage in a car stereo; Nod knows when enough is enough. Featuring funk guitar, forlorn distant saxophones and bold piano, Nod’s songs wouldn’t be out of place as the soundtrack to a slightly more R&B-focused version of Cowboy Bebop, or a more urbanfocused Steven Universe. They have nothing to prove, they just want to be themselves. Message albums are fantastic, as mentioned in other reviews this month, but there’s also something to be said for music for the sake of just chilling out. - Gavin Gaddis

STATE CHAMPION Send Flowers Sophomore Lounge Upon a casual first listen, Send Flowers might come across as basic, laid-back country music. Grant State Champion more of your time and attention, however, and you will find the band often ignoring traditional song structures to create their own unique, boozy bounce. The Louisville, Kentucky bar band plays a mostly-loose and live-in-the-studio sound that incorporates country rock accompanied with piano and violin. All of the songs are mid-tempo or slower, but warm and inviting. Listening to Send Flowers on a stereo system sounds a lot like listening to State Champion playing a house show or practicing quietly in a living room. What further sets Send Flowers apart from other recent alt-country albums is State Champion’s exceptional lyricism. Standout track “Death Preferences” opens with “I was coming down at the Diamond Head DMV when the feeling awoke,” then goes into an almost Faulkner-like stream of consciousness ramble about the randomness of Death (“Death prefers a time when you least expect it”). Frontman Ryan Davis continually delivers these smirking, humorous lines throughout the album while he paints sentimental scenes of everyday life. The calm, loose twang of the band serves as the perfect backdrop for his perfect lyricism. - Russ Finn
HOZIER Wasteland, Baby! Rubyworks Records The latest studio release from Irish musician Hozier is the perfect album to bring in spring, with a moving combination of uplifting songs and slower rhythms. Featuring several tracks off of Nina Cried Power, the critically-acclaimed EP released as a teaser in 2018, Wasteland, Baby! follows a nearly year-long hiatus that saw Hozier spending time in Ireland and focusing on resurrecting the powerful messages that brought us to church, so to speak, six years ago. With a rich voice reminiscent of a southern Baptist choir, Hozier is able to bring emotionally moving lyrics and meld them with melodies that are easy to sing along to and are sure to be stuck in your head all day long. “Nina Cried Power,” a song that pulls inspiration from names such as Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and Nina Simone herself, is an anthem of strength and resilience that everyone should add to their playlist. Hozier is an artist that people of all ages can listen to and appreciate. Wasteland, Baby! is the hit album of 2019 so far. Kendall Shanks
SUNWATCHERS Illegal Moves Trouble In Mind Records Sunwatchers is a four-piece instrumental band from New York City that plays an intense style of jazzy psychedelic rock like something straight out of 1968. Illegal Moves evokes a Tame Impala-esque timbre playing Mothers of Invention jams, and you could easily find yourself thrashing about and banging your head to the first half of the album before the band tones down their rock side to show you how well they can play freeform jazz and improv noise on “Everybody Play” and “Psychic Driving.” Sunwatchers then finish out the album out with a cover of Alice Coltrane’s “Ptah, The El Daoud” and psychedelic, desert Western closing track, “Strollin’ Coma Blues.” Though Sunwatchers make instrumental music, they are not without a message. The wild album artwork, which features an equal parts blue and red Kool-Aid Man murdering Uncle Sam, is a necessary part of the experience. I’d recommend a close study of all the little details in the album cover as you let Sunwatchers take you on their not-nearly-as-boring-as-Phish jam band journey. Play my favorite track “Beautiful Crystals” and give yourself a taste. - Russ Finn
WEEZER Weezer (Black Album) Crush Music/Atlantic Weezer has come a long way from “Buddy Holly,” but they've definitely taken a wrong turn on their career path. The band's latest album is a disappointing, repetitive collection that keeps the same tone throughout. Despite Weezer's penchant for solid hooks and catchy melodies, the Black Album hits all the wrong notes at all the wrong times. Track one is virtually indistinguishable from track five. However, the voice of frontman Rivers Cuomo still resonates as it did on their first self-titled album, widely known as the Blue Album. What he does not bring this time around is an interesting sound. While it is a good idea to work with the sound and legacy that made you famous, you also have to change to stay relevant. Weezer seems to have missed this memo. If you enjoy Weezer’s sound, you may like this album, but keep in mind it comes off like one never-ending song. Be sure to add Weezer (Black Album) to your lullaby playlist, because it's sure to bore you to sleep. - Kendall Shanks

Lighter than most mainstream macrobrews, more flavor than light beers, and higher quality than either, Goose Island’s original 312 was always a no-brainer for no-frills beer drinkers who prefer no-hangover mornings. This dryhopped variant brings more flavor without bitterness. The adding of hops after the boil slightly sharpens the original’s lemon notes without tasting like an IPA (where hops boil with the wort). This is a beer that may satisfy even the most ardent craft beer haters.
A decent white head rests on the beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. The scent contains mostly wheat with a few citrus notes. Likewise, the first tasting starts off with wheat flavors, but lemon notes come through in the long finish. Pair it with a hearty chef’s salad or lighter tasting cheeses such as mozzarella or chevre. The lemon flavors in the beer might also serve as a nice accent to lemon flavored desserts.
This is a straw-colored beer. It looks like something I would like, but it's just ok. I'm usually a big Goose Island fan but this one is nothing special. The can is pretty cool but that's the most it has going for it. It has a light, dry flavor. I was actually expecting some hops flavor but it seems a little lacking.

Just when you thought we’d reached market saturation with citrus-tinged IPAs, Kona Brewing brings you their Hanalei Island. Luckily, it proves to be more than buzzwords. Two ingredients make this beer unique: The guava further sweetens the requisite orange, and the dark flavors of passionfruit blunt the very slight bitterness on the finish. At only 40 IBUs, it may be slightly too bitter for some, but far milder than many. Light, crisp, and refreshing.
A thin white head forms on this India pale ale and quickly disappears. Tropical fruit scents hit the nose while smelling the beer. The fruit flavors remain with the first sip of the beer and some hop bitterness comes through in the finish. This will be a good choice during hot summer months, especially if you don’t want an umbrella drink. Pair it with spicy foods or fruity desserts like pineapple upside-down cake.
This is a golden-colored beer with peach and other fruit flavors; I can smell the hops and orange peel right away. I'm assuming this is what guava tastes like. It's pretty good and seems very tropical even though it's pretty cold outside. The hops did leave a little bitterness on my tongue but it's not too overpowering.

Make no mistake: This may be labeled an “ale,” but for all intents and purposes, it’s a cider. Nothing wrong with that, necessarily, especially since it’s a pretty good one. There’s a lot of flavors mixing together here: The tartness of apple and cranberries, the sweet and sour of a peach, and a hint of ginger ale on the finish. (Maybe that’s where the “ale” in the name came from…) Great for fans of ciders.
A thin white head appears and rapidly evaporates on the beer. A fruity nose dominates the scent profile, with apple giving the impression that the beer is almost a cider. A burst of carbonation hits the tongue with sweet fruit notes, followed by a combination of sour and sweet fruit flavors in the long finish. Pair it with apple pie, dark chocolate or serve it with breakfast for a great start to your morning.

This is a pink beverage. I consider this more of a wine/wine cooler beverage than a beer. It says it's a rosé ale and I guess this is a mix of the two. I can taste the apple, peach and some cranberry. I'm not much of a wine drinker but this would be a good dessert beverage.

With its corny name and stilted marketing, not gonna lie - I really didn’t want to like this
beer. But I’m willing to admit when I’m wrong, and I certainly was with this one. On first sip, I braced myself for what was sure to be an onslaught of hoppiness, but found it subtle and smooth (if unremarkable). There’s a very slight hint of grapefruit and earthiness, and it finishes very dry. Great for IPA lovers.
the nose. The initial sip of the beer seems mild, but hop flavors quickly spread out on the tongue. People who enjoy IPAs or other hoppy beers will definitely want to try this one. Pair it with whitefish tacos with lemon, cilantro and shredded radish.

This is a hazy amber-colored beer. It has a decent hops flavor. It doesn't overwhelm your tasted buds with hops and is pretty easy to drink. It has a crisp, light flavor with good citrus notes and no funky aftertaste.
A thick white head tops this India pale ale and remains for a long time. A nice blend of citrus fruit and pine notes from the hops fills
