OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW B E AV ER D AM AMP HI T HE AT E R | JU NE 15 | 7 P.M .

Jackson records." Old Crow Medicine Show frontman Ketch Secor has a knack for understated humor. He's also hyper intelligent with a piercing insight into what makes his critically-acclaimed bluegrass band tick and how it fits into the musical landscape - past and present. At the heart of it all, OCMS remains one of the genre's most valued treasures, having built up an enviable discography over the last 20 years that's produced both mainstream hits ("Wagon Wheel") and more traditional material that's served as an education for listeners brought up on a diet of modern sounds. This inherent dichotomy in the band's DNA is in full effect on 2018's Volunteer, particularly on the two closing tracks, "Elzick's Farewell" and "Whirlwind" - the former, a foot-stomping blinder of an instrumental that harkens back to the good old days of bluegrass, and the latter, a breezy, melancholy country ballad that's stations above what passes for chart material these days. Still, it's the live setting where Old Crow Medicine Show really shines. The band's visceral approach to performance is just about legendary - a high-wire act sans net that translates to a thrilling, often euphoric stage show. Hard to believe that six people could kick up so much dust with a couple of acoustic guitars, a banjo, fiddle and dobro or two, but the musicianship of this talented crew speaks for itself - and they can sing the heck out of some harmonies, too. We caught up with Secor ahead of the band's show at the Beaver Dam Amphitheater - part of the venue's incredible summer lineup that also features Bret Michaels (6/8), Sparks in the Park (7/6), 2nd Annual '80s Rock the Dam (7/20), The Temptations (8/25), Jason Isbell/Sheryl Crow (8/31) and The Big Dam Acoustic Rock Show (9/7).

Considering that the band's live show is so respected, has there been talk of trying to capture a performance on record? Yeah, the live show is really our most accomplished medium in Old Crow - to get up on the stage and deliver a highly original night of music that can only exist in the space in which it's performed. You know, it's not a dialed-in show - not a carbon copy of the last night. Beaver Dam ain't gonna get the same show as even Louisville last year; ain't gonna get the same show as Lexington the year before that. As far as translating that to a recording, yeah, we're dabbling in something like that right now - that I can't speak to great lengths about. But yeah, it's coming. Speaking of recordings, 2008's Tennessee Pusher was produced by the legendary Don Was who has worked with some of the biggest names in music. How did that partnership come about? He had a friend from Mississippi who used to listen to Old Crow on the radio - on the Garrison Keillor show - and I think from then on she

Playing wise, do you still surprise each other on stage? Oh yeah, I mean sometimes Damon will do something and I'll look back at the drummer who plays in my band - Chris Peet, who I've been playing with for 15 years now - we'll just look at each other and laugh. And the same with Victor, too - sometimes he'll do something and we'll all just look at each other and just smile and laugh because it's just so over the top. Yeah, that happens quite often. You build your own cigar box guitars - and occasionally compose on them as well. Is that an organic process or do you actually pick one up with the purpose of writing a song? It's funny - it's never a planned thing or anything like that. Believe it or not, sometimes when I put one together and get it all finished up and put some strings on it and tune it up, I'll noodle around on it and a lot of times I'll come up with a little riff while I'm doing that. If I feel like, 'Hey, this is actually pretty cool, I might be able to utilize this,' I record it on my iPhone on the voice memo. I don't say I come up with these ideas - they come to me. You must have hundreds of ideas on your phone. I have a ton of them. Going back to like 2013 or from before. For instance, last year, the drummer Chris Peet that I play with - he's also a really great bass player, too, by the way; he played most of the bass on my last CD - we went to Houma, Louisiana and we recorded a CD with Tab Benoit which is actually coming out at the end of next month on his Whisky Bayou label which is the same label that Damon put out his last CD on. We wound up going into the studio about a week after Damon was there; I pretty much plugged into the amplifier and left it set the way he had it [laughs]. But, yeah, I had no songs written or anything like that, no lyrics. But the day before we left to go down there, I went through my voice memos on my phone and just picked out about 15 little riffs or ideas and basically the songs came out of those ideas. We were there for five days and we left with 12 songs recorded - four covers and the rest originals. In that spirit of spontaneity, did you record a lot of first takes? A lot of times as we were trying something for the first time, Tab would hit "record" and a lot of the stuff was the first time we played it - the first take. I've come to the conclusion that there's a certain way your brain is operating when you're playing something for the very first time - because your brain is in a reactionary mode as opposed to trying to remember what you did last time and trying to repeat something. It's like stepping into water for the first time - or going swimming in the ocean for the first time. Your receptors are full on and sometimes some magical stuff can come out of that. . One of the most anticipated sets at this year's ROMP Fest is the Saturday night slot by Della Mae, an all-female, multi-talented string band out of Boston who've been touring with comedian - and lauded banjoist - Steve Martin in addition to playing headlining gigs in support of The Butcher Shoppe EP. Last month we spoke with Trampled by Turtles mandolinist Erik Berry who has a fairly liberal take on what could and should be done on such a traditional instrument. What's your approach to playing the mandolin? My approach is... I grew up on bluegrass. I've been playing bluegrass and traditional, classic bluegrass my whole life - which I love. But I also love jam band music and pop music and I draw from all my influences. Every time I hear a band live I pick up on something. I saw Greensky [Bluegrass] several times this year and when I see Paul [Hoffman] play, I learn something from him, whether it's how he interacts with his instrument or band members. I think it's great when people try new things; I think it's

Can you tell us about the band's efforts to spread peace and understanding through music - especially in other countries? It's music diplomacy, essentially. Basically, we've been to a lot of countries where

women don't have equal rights. And a lot of them have never heard live music before. But some of the places we've been there've been women artists as well. So, we're bringing American folk music and bluegrass to countries who have their own form of folk music and doing an exchange. Music is a universal language and we've been able to sit down in a room with other musicians - a lot of times women and play music. We'll have a language translator there, but we've been able to sit down and play music without translation and been able to connect in that way. It's so powerful. I can remember playing our first show in Pakistan - we played at a women's college. I think around 1200 women were outside of the auditorium of their college and the doors were shut - they're locked. And they're so excited that they're banging on the doors to get in. And they're just screaming. We played for them and a lot of them came to us and expressed that this was their first time seeing live music - and they were so inspired seeing women play music. Have these sorts of experiences seeped into the band's songwriting? I think it definitely impacts the band - definitely subconsciously. We're getting ready to record again and the new songs that we're writing... we're writing a lot of songs about feeling empowered or not being heard. So I think definitely our influences - where we go and the things we see - do definitely impact the music and the words that we write. There's almost a 1940's era influence to "Bourbon Hound," the single from the new Butcher Shoppe EP - reminds me a bit of "Chattanooga Choo Choo." Celia [Woodsmith] brought the song to the band - she brought it for Grey Fox [Bluegrass] Festival. Which is a festival we've played for the last nine years. And we always play a dance tent set that's packed with people. I think she was writing that day with the intention of writing something for the dance tent stage. It wasn't an intentional feel or anything - she brought the song and like we do with most of the songs that she brings...the rhythm and the arrangement came pretty organically. A standout from the EP is the cover of "Whipping Post" by the Allman Brothers Band. We worked it up right after Greg [Allman] passed away. And we worked it up for Grey Fox - we always work up covers. And then we kept playing it in our shows and people would come up and ask about that one and "16 Tons" - all the time. People would say they really wished we had it for sale. Now we do. To be fair, Evansville has been host to several LGBT street fairs in past years and a low key parade last summer. Don't know about you, but all of us here at News 4U could use a cold one about right now (yes, we're all 21 and over, thank you) - especially after ďŹ nally putting the Beer Issue to bed. Time to sink into a big ol' mug of suds and forget it all for a few hours... But hey, don't worry, we'll drink responsibly and all that. We just hope that you'll read responsibly as you leaf through the following pages and learn a few things about that intoxicating beverage we call beer from some of the most trusted sources in the tri-state. There's a little bit of everything, including the science behind brewing, the latest industry trends and what some of our local rockers like to kick back with before they take the stage. Oh, and lots of informative beer menus from your favorite bars and restaurants. Thirsty yet?

Breaking down the process behind creating that intoxicating beverage B Y JOH N MILLS OW N ER , MAI DE NS BRE WE RY Beer, one of the oldest alcoholic beverages, has been produced and consumed on this planet for over 7,000 years. Still, the process remains pretty much the same; what has changed is our knowledge about the science behind making this intoxicating beverage. Beer today has four simple ingredients: Water - 95% of total ingredients
Grain - barley, wheat, rye, corn, rice, etc. Hops - the bitter pinecone looking things Yeast - the newest ingredient Making beer is a simple process of mashing, lautering, boiling, and fermenting.
HERE’S THE GEEKY SCIENCE BEHIND THAT TASTY BREW: THE MASH
Grain is nothing more than the seed of a grass. It has a lot of stored sugar inside each kernel to help its next generation to start growing. Grain has naturally occurring enzymes on its husk that activate when exposed to hot water. These enzymes convert the starches of the grain to simpler sugars that yeast like to eat.
THE LAUTER
We strain off the sugary liquid from the grain, then rinse the grain with more hot water to make sure we got all the sugar out of the grain…and to make it better, because who likes to drink oatmeal?
THE BOIL
We boil the sugary water to kill off all the other yeast, bacteria and other nasties that have been hitching a ride in this sweet, yummy liquid. We add hops as a preservative to help prevent these same nasty beasties from coming alive again in the sugary water; this adds bitterness that acts as the counterbalance on this teeter totter of sweetness.
THE FERMENT
We need to cool down the sweet and now slightly bitter liquid in order to add yeast (don’t want to kill these suckers, they got magic to do for us). We add a lot of yeast in order to overcome the preservative factor of the hops. Yeast eat most of the sugars and convert the sweet and slightly bitter liquid into alcohol (makes people better looking) and carbon dioxide (makes the liquid feel funny on your tongue). It takes as little as three days and as long as three years for the different beer styles of the world to complete fermentation. This liquid is now beer. All that's left is the packaging. Fun fact: The ancient Sumerians loved their beer so much they couldn’t wait to drink it. There are stone tablets engraved with images of them sucking up the suds through reed straws around a communal bowl. I like mine in a glass, though. Cheers! Maidens Brewery is located at 209 N. Wabash Ave. of Flags in Evansville.

And few drinks go down smoother this time of year than Bud, Bud Light and Busch Light, three of the flagship beers of Anheuser-Busch that Working Distributors provides to the tri-state. Yes, you owe this local, familyowned wholesaler a debt of gratitude for helping to make life a little more exciting around these parts. Add "Natty" Light to that list of classic beers, by the way. A big hit with college students, it's now becoming a favorite with the older crowd, too - especially with the introduction of "Naturdays," a new strawberry lemonade creation that's crazy refreshing. But that's just one of the many exciting new drinks that Working is, well, working with and promoting of late. According to GM Ted Thompson and Sales Manager Matt Reinhart, the industry trend has been moving towards natural, "better for you" beers - organic, even - a result of all the label reading going on today. To that end, Working is pleased to offer the "peels portfolio" which includes Bud Light Lime, Orange and Lemon Tea - brewed with natural peels and flavoring. Then there's the organic version of Michelob ULTRA, Pure Gold (perhaps you caught the relaxing ASMR-based Super Bowl ad), made with organic grains and without artificial colors and flavorings - an instant favorite of the health-conscious consumer.

JUNE 2019 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
Fun fact: Anheuser-Busch was the first beverage company to feature a certified organic beer. Another popular drink with the carb and calorie watchers is Spiked Seltzer; in fact, there's a whole line, including Pear Elderflower, Black Cherry Rosemary and Clementine Hibiscus - all of which emulate the zesty taste of a vodka and soda but without the high ABV. Women, especially, have gravitated towards this natural alcoholic beverage that contains zero sugar. Both men and women, on the other hand - athletic types, in particular - are hip to the new Hiball Organic Energy Drinks. The buzz is alcohol-free, of course; rather, it's a result of the organic caffeine extracted from organic green coffee beans. And there's a lot going on in the world of craft beers, too, with Goose Island and Rhinegeist, among other Working partners, producing killer IPAs - some featuring fruit flavors like tangerine - and delicious sessionable lagers. But at the end of the day, there's always going to be a huge Bud, Bud Light and Busch Light contingent - those everyday beer drinkers who are loyal to the OG brands and rarely read labels. Actually, Bud Light, for example, is brewed with barley, hops, water, yeast and rice - it's all good. So don't be shy, drink up this summer courtesy of Working Distributors! FYI: Check out Working Distributors and their new Pride-themed Bud Light bottles at this month's River City Pride Festival, June 22 in downtown Evansville.

In the back of the brewery, where all the magic happens, you'll find Head Brewer Wayne Patmore, Assistant Brewer Damian Bruner and Packaging Director Joel Stevens. Wayne and Damian both started out as home brewers. The former has more than 25 years of experience - the last four on the professional side - while the latter has been brewing for 21 years, joining the Carson's crew just last year. Together, they're producing unique beers like Kool-Aid Gose and White Stout. Their latest, Evil Donut, is brewed using Kempf Donut Bank donuts. It's slightly sweet with a light cinnamon note and a hint of vanilla - a must try when visiting the brewery. Look for another batch to be made available later this month.

It's no secret that beer and live music make a pretty good combo. Frankly, it's hard to imagine one without the other. Unofficial (fictitious, perhaps) studies show that bands rock just that much harder when they've had a few cold ones before taking the stage. And perhaps a few more during the show. And hopefully the crowd is all juiced up so they're oblivious to all the bum notes. Hey, that's rock and roll, after all. We checked in with some of the tri-state's most notable artists and bands and asked that all-important question: For those about to rock...Whatcha drinkin'? TASTES LIKE CHICKEN:

KALILA STORMFIRE’S ECONOMICAL MAGICK SERVICES (BIWEEKLY)
An audio drama produced by, and starring, Lisette Alvarez, Kalila Stormfire follows the titular Kalila, a witch trying to establish herself in a new town. Things aren’t as easy as originally expected and soon Stormfire has evidence to suggest a rival witch somewhere is doing everything she can to sink her business before it can get properly started. A rare example of a fictional witch being written and performed by an actual witch, Kalila is one of the best indie audio fiction shows out there.

SERENDIPITY CITY (BIWEEKLY)
In a fantastical pseudo-1920s dieselpunk city, a band of criminals is doing their best to pull off jobs, get paid, and not die in the process. Serendipity City is an actual-play podcast featuring three player characters and their game master roleplaying in a delightfully old-timey city under prohibition. Often you’ll find podcasts of this sort commit one way or the other on the spectrum of fantasy to real-world environs and world rules; SC lives in a wonderful middle zone of magic, illegal booze, and criminal intrigue. serendipitypod.com
BLANK CHECK (WEEKLY)
I’m taking a rare moment to recommend a podcast that, by all measures, is ridiculously successful on its own. Where Blank Check differs from thousands of movie podcasts is that the hosts have a genuine love of the craft of filmmaking. The show is divided into mini-series where they choose a director and talk about their filmography, specifically directors who had success early in their career and were given “blank checks” by studios to make whatever movies they wanted. It’s as much an analysis of how power and money changes a creator as it is “dudes talk about a bad movie.” twitter.com/

HONEY ROAST (WEEKLY)
Honey Roast takes the classic idea of a comedy roast and applies a generous dollop of positivity. Instead of comedians gathering together to dunk on someone they like, each episode features host Tess interviewing someone about a creator that’s important to them. Be it someone’s favorite podcast producer to musician/novelist John Darnielle, each episode someone is getting aggressively complimented in the sweetest way. This bundle of happiness capitalizes on the secret to good audio in an interview format: asking someone about something they are incredibly passionate about. Each episode is a treasure and a perfect break from the doom and gloom that is everyday life in 2019.

EXPLORING SMALL BUSINESS Featuring LINDSEY DEER of MICHELLE'S SALON
with Elaina Adams
We’ve been anticipating summer for the past several, excruciatingly long months and it’s finally time to reap the rewards. Summer is all about feeling good, and what better way is there to feel good than to look even better. If you’re like me, one of your favorite “treat-yo-self” activities is to get something new done with your hair. There is just something about leaving the salon that brings out the badass in us all. The other day, I headed over to Michelle’s Salon to begin my summer transformation. That’s where the extremely talented Lindsey Deer spends her days as a styling ninja. She and I first met during a mid-life crisis – mine, not hers. I had just turned 17-years-old and wanted to look like I crawled out of a Tim Burton movie. Green hair sounded like a good first step. So, I went to Lindsey. Thanks to her, my green

According to Martin, there are not enough homes on the market in the middle price range, so desirable homes are selling fast, which has made a lot of people decide to do major remodels instead of moving. With that in mind, we wanted to know what types of renovations Martin and his crew are most commonly seeing these days. He highlighted eight trends that can add value to your existing home.

So when the Madison, IN resident started to prepare for her post-college life, she knew that she didn't want to live alone. In other words, it was time to find a new pup. During one of her many trips to the VHS, Staser came across Posey, a 2-year-old, medium-sized mixed breed (perhaps a Lab/Collie combo) with a sweet smile and even sweeter disposition. The thought of leaving this four-legged sweetheart at the shelter just seemed too sad, so not only did she decide to adopt Posey, Staser took her home two weeks early to ensure that no one else got her in the interim. Smart move, because Posey is reportedly very well-behaved, walks on a leash with no problem and already has her daily schedule down pat, including when it's time to go to bed. "In my eyes, she's the perfect dog," Staser gushes. Another successful adoption!

ASK THE PASTOR

Q:
FAITH AND SCIENCE? OR FAITH VERSUS SCIENCE?
with Jonathan Gluff
For those of us who were raised in a religious community, one of the things we were taught was that God created everything. In my own tradition, we recited “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth.” My favorite is from
St. Vincent de Brenner
the Nicene Creed, which says, “We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.” That pretty much covers it! But, along came science with its incontrovertible truth that things just may not have happened as Genesis proclaimed. While the Bible understood a flat earth, at the center of a revolving universe, Galileo shook that up. Darwin’s “Origin of the Species” shook things up a bit more. The Human Genome Project began explaining things as we had never considered before. Some people of faith panicked when science began challenging long held religious beliefs. They needn’t have worried. Science helped us – and helps us still – to understand the mystery and wonder of the world around us. The intricacies of the creation, the wonder of a cell, the power of the atom, the inarguable truth that we are all about 95% just like everyone else – all gifts of science. The greater challenge is what we do with the gifts science offers. Shall we ignore them and keep on living in a pattern of self-destruction? Or shall we welcome the wisdom science brings and be faithful caretakers of “all things visible and invisible?”

JUNE 2019 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
Some time in early 2014, an older gentleman came up to me while I was at work and struck up a conversation with me. He was warm, friendly, and funny. After a few minutes, he said, “My granddaughter works here - you might know her.” “Oh yeah? What’s her name?” I asked. After telling me, I nervously laughed and responded, “Well, sir, I believe I’m dating your granddaughter.” And that was how I met Vince Brenner. I only had the privilege of knowing Vince for a scant five years, but as anyone who knew him will tell you, it didn’t take long to recognize how genuinely good his character was (and how much of a character he was). Vince was a man of many talents. There were few things he couldn’t fix, and he used this to aid the Marine Corps in small arms repair during the Korean War. After leaving the service, he put those skills to use at St. Mary’s, doing locksmithing and maintenance for many years. He was a devout Catholic, serving the church indirectly through his day job and directly in other ways. He was always glad to do handiwork for parishioners, serve as a long-running member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society (as well as dress up as the
spitting image of its namesake), or repair altars and other wooden items. Those woodworking skills were second to none. The basement and garage of their Evansville home was packed with everything from toys, tables, and chairs to chalices, statues, and tools. We’re lucky enough to have a dining room table handmade by him, and it’s something built to be passed down through the family for generations I got to hear a lot of great stories about Vince recently, but one my wife shared with me is one of my favorites: His daughter, Laurie, made a joke about how much of a nerd I am (a label she and I both know I wear proudly). Vince - not aware of the use of “nerd” being a term of endearment - apparently came to my defense, vehemently exclaiming, “He’s just a damn good guy!” I’m not sure I’ll ever receive a higher compliment, so I’ll try to repay the compliment posthumously: He was one of the greatest men I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting, we’re all better for having known him, and we’re all going to miss him.

TRI-STATE
POLITICS with Bryan Fox
MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD...
WEAVER COULD BE IN TROUBLE
with Johnny Fletcher
Now that the dust has settled in the 2019 Evansville primaries, the only thing that's clear is that the next city council will have five new faces.
and finished second to incumbent H. Dan Adams; only 100 votes separated them. In 2015, he got the most votes in both the primary and general elections.
The only Republican seeking re-election is Justin Elpers who represents the biggest swing ward in the city, the 5th. Democrats seeking re-election are Missy Mosby, Jim Brinkmeyer, and Jonathan Weaver. Mosby and Brinkmeyer represent the 2nd and 6th wards, respectively. Both wards lean to the left. President Trump actually won both wards in 2016 so there's still a chance for the GOP to pick off a seat but it's always hard to defeat an incumbent, especially if your last name is Mosby.
As you can see, Weaver is trending in the wrong direction. In an election cycle where the Democrats can't even field a mayoral candidate and the county party appears to be in disarray, that could spell doom for Weaver. The fact that loyal Democratic voters would prefer two newcomer candidates before Weaver is even worse. It's possible that Democratic voters could cross the line in the general election to support a Republican at-large candidate rather than vote for Weaver.
The one incumbent that needs to watch his back is at-large candidate Jonathan Weaver. Weaver, who is currently seeking a third term, didn't have a very good showing in this year's primary. For the at-large seats, the top three vote getters advance to the general election. Sure, Weaver advanced, but he finished third out of five candidates. In the past two city election cycles, Weaver has been able to get many more votes with his name on the ballot. In 2011, he got the most votes in the primary
Weaver had some negative news thrown at him a couple years ago when he was accused by his ex-wife for violating his restraining order. This could be the reason for the dismal showing during the primary. Whatever the reason, the Democrats need Weaver. He's an incumbent who has shown the ability to generate a lot of votes. They will also need to field a candidate for mayor in 2023. That could be Weaver. But if he fails to win back his at-large seat in November, that could spell the end of his political career.
Don't Strain Yourself I seem to recall a time when I could just go about my business and not worry about silly things like pulling muscles - the body was flexible, agile. Dare I say I was athletic? But now... now even the slightest wrong move can be disastrous. For example, while laying in bed the other morning, I innocently reached back behind my head to grab a hoodie that had lodged itself part-way beneath my pillow during the night. (Sidebar: yes, I always wear a hoodie while reading before clocking out and sliding under the covers - I'm cold-blooded, after all.) Bad idea. See, now that there's no longer any elasticity in my arms and shoulders thanks to the wear and tear of nearly 50 years of living (not to mention increasing tension brought on by the insanity of society), I'm just one big muscle strain waiting to happen. Actually, in this case, it was seven separate muscles (yes, I counted them). Was unaware that was even possible, but a life's education never stops, apparently. Now, if you've bothered to read this far and haven't, in fact, strained your brain trying to wrap your head around such a ridiculous scenario, I can assure you that I'm on the road to recovery - albeit a slow one that involves a rotating cast of heating pads and avoidance of sleeping on my right side. Tell me more, I hear you say. Sadly, I cannot.

THE HIGHWAYMEN NETFLIX
In an ode to the hard scrabbled, tenacious and - most importantly - obstinate heroes of yesteryear, John Lee Hancock's new Netflix film The Highwaymen tries to point a finger at what was so great about our America of yore. While Bonny and Clyde roam the countryside robbing banks and distributing the wealth, two retired Texas Rangers are hot on their tails. Here we follow the two Rangers from the beginning, when Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner), lost and bored among the garden parties of his wife at his plantation estate, is asked to come out of retirement to hunt down a couple of savage criminals. Hamer jumps at the opportunity, and so does Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson) once he sees his old partner on a new case. What follows is a long-winded buddy dramedy that romanticizes the natural instincts of tried servicemen over the practiced procedures of the law. Given all of Hamer's gestures of bravado, it is hard to tell if either is best suited for these bumbling old men. Overall, it is hard to see Hancock's intent. If he wants us to root for these two retired Rangers, he devotes a lot of screen time to showing them as unlikable, selfish and ineffectual, most notably a scene where Gault manipulates a young girl without her parents' consent to give up the location of Bonny and Clyde. But then again, it was a different time. - John Thurgood
TRIPLE FRONTIER NETFLIX
If we look at the original Ocean's Eleven as something close to the beginning of the heist genre, we can track a clear trajectory charting when and how these films began their turn toward reality. From the domino like Rube Goldberg machine of Ocean's Eleven where every character serves a specific purpose and every scene builds to a final display of precise planning coming to fruition to the bumbling mishaps of Three Kings, we begin to see the formula start to unravel and develop into something with more substance. The characters have flaws, and the theme blurs a line between right and wrong. In the newest offering from Netlfix, Triple Frontier, we see a full pivot from cinematic spectacle to base human desire - and in this case, greed. When four soldiers take the skills they honed as special service operatives and turn them to a South American drug family, the origins of this simple genre film begin to sound more like a biopic about ex-pats gone rogue. Most of the film is shot in the thick jungles of Hawaii and Columbia with long, panning heloshots of lush rolling tropics. The acting is superb. Oscar Issac stands out in his role as the linchpin to the heist. And the plot does not disappoint. J. C. Chandor pushes for tension at every turn, once again proving himself to be a director to look out for. - John Thurgood

MOUNTAIN GOATS In League with Dragons Merge Records
MC FRONTALOT Net Split... Level Up Records & Tapes
Much in the same way nobody actively asked for a Tim Burton-directed Batman movie but it was a perfect combination, all the same, I don’t think the world was particularly clamoring for The Mountain Goats’ 17th album to be inspired by Dungeons and Dragons. Yet, in practice, it’s the perfect combination. From the band’s native sound to their massive nerd-forward fanbase, if there ever was a band that could artistically pull off a D&D-themed album that doesn't feel forced or empty, it’s these guys.
Sometimes an artist takes one step too far in constructing an album and annihilates the tone. Unfortunately, Net Split is one of those albums. I’m pissed, y’all. Were Net Split an 11 song album I would be giving it 4+ stars and raving about how fun it is to have MC Frontalot’s signature pronunciation style back after so many years but he had to go and include the 12th song. The final track is an acoustic rerecording of "Pr0n Song," a comedy rap about someone with a porn addiction.
In League with Dragons is simultaneously fun to listen to in the context of a bit of D&D fan culture and a fantastic Mountain Goats album. Frankly, it’s so consistently good I’m tempted to say this is a better album to introduce people to frontman John Darnielle than fan favorite Tallahassee. Dragons clips along at a wonderful pace as Darnielle delivers trademark lyrics that inspire and delight. While the most popular television show ever produced manages to make magic and dragons disappointing, Dragons delivers bite-sized stories of a magical, fantastical world I actually want to return to. - Gavin Gaddis
Like most comedy written by white dudes in 2005, musical or otherwise, the language of "Pr0n Song" is geared towards edginess, towards titillation, and of course, it includes both an ableist and transphobic slur. Yet while comics like Brian Posehn and Patton Oswalt have grown and refrained from belittling marginalized people in their acts, Frontalot hasn’t. He shows glimmers of hope while rapping about nerd culture gatekeeping and toxic masculinity, but by including "Pr0n Song" without edits or disclaimer it undermines that entirely. It shows a lack of thought and foresight I’d expect from an Imagine Dragonslevel by-the-numbers act. - Gavin Gaddis
STARBOMB The Tryforce Self-Released In 2013 the hosts of popular YouTube channel Game Grumps (hosted by animator Arin Hanson and Ninja Sex Party frontman Dan Avidan) spun off a video game-themed comedy band known as Starbomb. Save for one painfully awkward livestream (turns out people watching a Mystery Science Theater 3000 telethon weren’t super into a "Monster Mash"-styled rap about Castlevania) their first two albums and tours have been consistently entertaining. Listening to any Starbomb content on Spotify dooms your Discover Weekly playlist to recommend garbage YouTube video game rappers, though. The Tryforce hangs a hat on the fact that Starbomb is a paper-thin act, dedicating the final song to a self-lampooning description of how most of Starbomb’s songs follow the same structure. Arin sets up a video game joke and then Dan, the one who can actually sing, belts out something beautiful on the chorus to carry the song. There’s an earnestness in their commitment to the bit that makes even the weakest jokes work. Several songs feel more polished than others, and coincidentally (like prior albums) they’re the ones that get really good animated music videos on YouTube. It’s an okay album of work better suited to be consumed on YouTube in animated video form. - Gavin Gaddis

CAGE THE ELEPHANT Social Cues RCA Records It’s not often a band one discovers in a cartoony video game ends up being one of the better rock bands producing music today, yet Borderlands featuring "Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked" introduced me to Cage the Elephant, the biggest net positive cultural export to come out of Kentucky in the past couple of decades. Yet, despite how hard they rocked on their 2008 debut, I fell off the bandwagon as the albums rolled on. Perhaps there has been a more gradual shift for those who’ve kept tabs on Cage the Elephant over the years but for me Social Cues feels like what would happen if I threw that old album and Torches by Foster the People in a blender. There’s so much Foster-esque post-processing and instrument use. Cage is a band unafraid of changing, a one-way ticket to this reviewer’s heart. In 2019 the term “rock” means basically nothing anymore, and bands that stick with the description “rock band” feel like they’re in a race to become the blandest group of four to five dudes on a stage in music. Social Cues plays in the psychedelic/ alt-rock space and rocks a funky weird cowboy as album art. Gavin Gaddis

ANDERSON .PAAK Ventura 12 Tone Music/Aftermath The fourth studio album from artist Anderson .Paak showcases the scope of his influences - from G-funk to oldschool soul - that he integrates into his own distinct sound. With just 11 songs on Ventura, the album has seven artist features, including Smokey Robinson and the late Nate Dogg. The compounded sound, echoing from his previous albums, is a hallmark feature of .Paak’s Californiainfluenced soul. This combination of voices and styles not only creates a sound unique only to .Paak, but draws in a wide base of listeners. Track seven on the album, “King James,” is a song of love and togetherness even in the wake of police brutality against the black community and microaggressions against minorities. From the first verse harboring a political statement, “If they build a wall, let’s jump the fence,” to an ode to Colin Kaepernick with “But when I finally took a knee/Those crackers kicked me off the league,” Anderson .Paak finds a way to convey a powerful message with an undeniably groovy beat. Ventura is an album sure to get stuck in your head all summer long, but .Paak’s sound will never get old. - Kendall Shanks
BAD RELIGION Age of Unreason Epitaph Records
After a six-year hiatus, punk favorite Bad Religion releases their 17th album, Age of Unreason Unreason. While some fans love the fact that the Los Angeles veterans continue to record well after the height of punk rock, some seem to feel that enough is enough. Regardless, Bad Religion are considered one of the greatest punk bands of all time and Age of Unreason maintains the sound that fans have come to love over the past several decades. With critical lyrics, Age of Unreason is an album that doesn't shy away from political criticism intrinsic to the punk genre. Similar to the sound on 2013's True North, this LP has a mix of pace and intensity. The title is an ode to Thomas Paine’s The Age of Reason, a book famous for political critique and criticizing biblical authority. While providing social commentary, frontman Greg Graffin offers hope on the title track with “But we can live as one in perfect harmony/It requires a common sensibility to teach an intellectual capacity.” An album for new and old fans alike, Age of Unreason is a testament to classic punk. - Kendall Shanks
VAMPIRE WEEKEND Father of the Bride Columbia Records When Vampire Weekend released their last album, 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City City, frontman Ezra Koenig stated that it was the end of a “trilogy of sorts.” The east coast indie rockers put out three albums between 2008 and 2013 that showed the band constantly evolving while honing a sound that set them apart from every other group. Now, six years later, Vampire Weekend return with the ambitious, 18-song Father of The Bride. From start to finish, this long-awaited double album brings back the bright, cheery pop tunes that dominate the band's discography, basking in sunshine as it continually deals with themes of spring, nature, marriage, and rebirth backdropped by tons of happy guitar licks. For both casual and diehard Vampire Weekend fans, there's a lot on offer here. Unfortunately, multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij only assists on a couple tracks, having left the band after the previous release. As a crucial member, his absence has perhaps hindered the band ever so slightly as Father of The Bride seems to be missing a certain level of perfection that past albums achieved. - Russ Finn
CONTROL TOP Covert Contracts Get Better Records I had the opportunity to see Control Top a couple weeks ago. They were the opening act for Laura Jane Grace, but I got to the show late and missed their set - now I’m kicking myself. Not only is Control Top’s debut album Covert Contracts a stellar punk album, it’s quite possibly better than anything Laura Jane Grace has released in a while (sorry, Laura). From opener “Type A” to closer “Black Hole,” Covert Contracts is a nonstop sonic punch that will have you thrashing about. There isn’t a singular highlight on the album, as every track provides nearly the same feel. There are, however, plenty of gold lines throughout the album that will have angsty office slugs like me nodding their heads in their cubicle. You don’t get better modern punk lyrics than “Staring at a screen/Makes me itch and scream/Click click click click click/ Makes me f*cking sick” from my favorite track, “Office Rage.” While introducing nothing new to the punk lexicon, Control Top still deliver an awesome throwback album full of energy and anger. If you are a fan of punk music from the late 70s/early 80s, don’t kick yourself later by ignoring Control Top now. - Russ Finn

Rhinegeist may be a relatively new player in the craft beer world, but no doubt they’re making their mark. And like their recentlyreviewed Bubbles, this is another brew more in line with ciders (or even brut champagne/ sparkling wine) than beers. Nothing wrong with that, but when flavors like pineapple, passionfruit, and apple mix together with nary a hint of hoppiness, it’s pretty much a beer in name only (a BINO?). With a smooth, crisp, refreshing finish, it definitely makes a good summer drink.
A thick white head forms and quickly disappears from this beer. The scent contains tropical fruit notes with some effervescence. The fruit flavors remain with the first sip of the beer, first with sweet apple and pineapple, followed by tart passionfruit in the finish. This beer could be a good one to have during the summer heat wave. The fruit notes could pair well with desserts like apple pie and pineapple upside down cake.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This beer pours a nice golden amber color with a nice white head. The smell is sweet and sour with lots of pineapple mixed with other fruits. It has an ABV of 6.2% and a little tart flavor. There is nothing flashy about this beer, but it has a nice balance and is easy to drink.

Fun fact: “Imperial” means a beer was intended to be imbibed by royalty (and usually that English brewers were making it for Russian czars). With that in mind, Rhinegeist’s Knowledge might fall a little short of those lofty aspirations. You’d be forgiven for thinking this is a pretty standard IPA. Not too heavy on the hoppiness and with slight undertones of darker citrus flavors, it’s a fairly uneventful experience. Not bad by any means, but perhaps not quite up to its royal moniker.
BREWDOG HAZY JANE
JONATHAN GLUFF - 3.5
It takes a lot to stand out in the IPA market, but Brewdog certainly makes a case for noticing their Hazy Jane. Being brewed with oats and rye (the namesake malt in my favorite whiskey variant) imparts a unique flavor. The oatiness is very apparent on the soft palate, and the subtle sweetness of rye adds an interesting twist on the tongue. With just enough bitterness to add complexity without being overpowering, this is easily one of my favorite IPAs.

A thick white head crowns this Imperial IPA and takes time to dissipate when poured in a tulip glass. The smells of pine and citrus hop notes fill the nose. Likewise, a good amount of bitter hop flavors hit the tongue when sipping the beer and continue in the very long finish. People who enjoy IPAs will want to try this one. Pair it with whitefish tacos with lemon, cilantro and shredded radish.
A thick white head tops this IPA and never totally evaporates. Hoppy citrus notes dominate the scent profile. A balance of hop and malt flavors stay on the tongue while drinking the beer, with hops returning to the forefront in the long finish. The oats and wheat used during the brewing process give the beer a pleasantly soft mouth feel. Pair it with grilled seafood and lighter salads in the summer.

This is a clear golden-colored beer with a nice hops flavor. The pine and grapefruit notes are amply present. For those who enjoy a strong ABV, Knowledge clocks in at 8.5%. Even better, it possesses a nice creamy mouth feel which scores this beer an extra point.

This is a cloudy straw-colored beer with a pineapple aroma. I like the hopped up flavor but I can really taste the wheat base flavors. Usually, I'm blasted with the hops and can’t taste anything else. This is one of the best IPAs I have ever had - check it out.

scale production), their Sound Bite IPA is something truly unique. It’s smooth, creamy, complex, and slightly hoppy with no hint of bitterness. A strong orange presence really smacks the palate, and a touch of biscuit a lá standard ales wafts through the nose while exhaling after a sip. Another must-try IPA.

A thick white head rests on this cloudy IPA. The scent boasts a moderate amount of citrus from the variety of hops used. The light hoppy citrus flavors continue with the initial tasting and the minimal carbonation might appeal
to people who stay away from IPAs. The low alcohol content also makes this a good choice during the summer. Pair it with a hearty entrée like steak, salmon or a hamburger.

This beer has a bunch of carbonation and pours a cloudy straw color. It's nice that they package it in a pint can so you can enjoy more of the sweet hops flavor. It's definitely better than average - pretty easy to drink with a nice pine flavor.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
