important to me - to write my own stuff. That's how I make people believe what I'm saying. That's not saying that if the perfect song came along I wouldn't cut it, because I'm a songwriter and I want people to cut my songs. But for me personally, the artist thing happened out of songwriting; that was not the first goal. The first goal was to be a songwriter. If it was the perfect song where it fit everything...yeah, I'm always open to it. But that's going to be pretty rare - I would never want to take credit for someone else's song and change their stuff and put my name on it. So, finding that perfect song that I didn't write, it could happen, but it hasn't happened yet. Speaking of perfect songs, did "Drunk Me" feel like a hit when you wrote it? Well, I loved that song and it was a song that I'd been wanting to write for a long time. I pitched that song for other artists - I thought it was a great song; I felt like people could relate to it. But no one ended up taking it. My co-writer actually sang on the demo and he's got such a great voice, so I never saw it for me. I thought someone would take it. And it was kind of frustrating - I thought we had nailed it. But then it came time to make a record and that song was still there and I've always loved it. But I was scared because he sang it so well on the demo and I didn't know if I could do it justice. So, I went in and put a vocal on it and when I heard it, I wasn't sure if it was good or bad, but I knew it sounded different. And if we were going to stand any chance with our first song on the radio, then it's got to be different. We bit our lip and went with it, thank god. The title track on Telling All My Secrets is definitely different. Where does the R&B influence come from? I don't know...you know, there's a bunch of great singers; I don't really know how to sing [laughs]. That's probably why it sounds a little different. I surrounded myself with everything from R&B to pop and rock & roll and whatever I'm presenting kind of came from all those influences growing up. I don't care what it sounds like, I just want it to sound different. If you're talking about a formula, you can get real formulated when you try to sing like someone else. I just started singing and that was the voice that came out - don't know where it came from. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. gravely, dark tale that's more from a singer-songwriter angle. It's really about someone being hung and in the split second they're hung, coming back into this world. It's all about rebirth. So, it's a Zen cowboy kind of blues. "My spurs and boot heels touched the stars / And once more I was free" - bang! And he's back again as somebody else. I've been writing songs about reincarnation on and off. "Forget Me Not" with Bad English was about reincarnation. You're always looking out for a clue about what's really going on and your head's reinvestigating what you think you know and turning ideas over and songs like that...the perfect image of the cowboy riding over the top of a butte somewhere. It's an allegory; it's life. When you record a song by the likes of Dianne Warren do you adhere to the demo or re-interpret it? I never sing anything like anybody else. I just won't do it. I remember [Bad English producer] Richie Zito leaning in and saying, 'why don't you just sing it like the demo?' And I said, you know, 'because.' And I made it [the song] actually more than it was, probably. If you just get lost in the melody and just talk it, you're not trying to overdo it with the vocal. It has to be convincing, you know? That's what singing is. Obviously, it worked because "When I See You Smile" hit number one. But that seemed to be the final straw for you in terms of playing the music industry game. They keep dumping success in my lap and I keep giving it back. I mean, honestly, it's like I couldn't wait to get out of the spotlight. Every time I get to number one, it's like, 'thanks'. I'd rather be entertained by sitting in the audience than being an entertainer. I come out and I do what I do and it's not rehearsed; it's spontaneous, it's different every night. And I think once you become established, the powers that be expect you to sort of straighten up and fly right and be this one thing. You look at someone like Dylan and he's incredibly all over the place and it's interesting. But there's a difference between music and product. And both of them are valid things to whoever's listening. Your musical tastes are all over the map and that comes out in your songwriting as well. Do you think your fans are ever challenged by that? If they've seen [what I've done] since it's all started, you know... Because I have no plan, I have no map. I just move forward and if something appears to me, I step into it, especially with the Wooden Heart stuff. It's just a case of doing what your muse tells you to do or what speaks to you. I don't want to write songs in a circle of people and I don't want to be corporate - I don't want to be part of that. For tickets and more info, visit lincolnamphitheatre.com. Was it difficult to process the journey from creating DIY comics in Arkansas to working with a civil rights icon years later? At times it's still surreal, even seven years later, after getting on board

with the collaboration. But you know, it helps that Congressman Lewis is just a really temperate, truly open, accepting person who puts you at ease. His public persona is really who he is, so he really helped to eliminate any of that fanboy, star-struck feeling. Working on March, in many ways, was the sum total of so many long-term interests and passions I'd had in my life - in terms of being able to tell stories about young people changing their environment in the American south, fighting against racism and white supremacy, getting to make books that reflected the world that I came from. The sinister feel of Come Again is something a bit new for you. Where did that underlying darkness emerge from? Come Again gestated over a period of many years. I started it before I started drawing March, actually. I penciled 50 pages at a time and then I would just put it away or put it in the trash, because I knew it wasn't ready. But also, the purpose of it existing in this sort of pseudo-horror, pseudo-mystery world...it became more clear that there was power and purpose to that, working closer to a defined genre that I was not that experienced with or comfortable with from the onset. Over the course of doing March and getting a little more concrete with my ability to deliver just information in a narrative that would allow my comic to make sense, allowed me to go back and do even weirder stuff with my own comics and hopefully be able to carry across the nuts and bolts of storytelling a little better. So what's on the horizon for you, project-wise? I just finished a new book called Two Dead that's a weird kind of psychological, hard-boiled fiction that I did with my friend Van Jensen. It takes place in the mid-40's in my hometown of Little Rock. Some of it's based on some real life stuff but a lot of it is really about the twin horrors of undiagnosed PTSD and the psychic trauma of living in a segregated southern city. That will be out in November. Right now I'm working on a new book that I'm writing and drawing called Tornado

IN THE KITCHEN
with Chef Amanda Hancock
August in southern Indiana is one of my favorite times of the year to be a chef. There's such an abundance of fresh produce everywhere you look that you simply can't go wrong with anything you buy. After raiding a farm stand in Haubstadt, I decided to put everything into one dish and make a mean vegetarian lasagna using fresh tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, and a giant sweet onion. I also had some left-over supplies from recent cheese demonstrations I did for Capers Emporium in New Harmony, so I decided I would make some homemade ricotta cheese so the entire dish would be fresh. Keep in mind, the key to using fresh ingredients is to embrace the fact that they are fresh and local! Don’t go crazy with spices and cover up the natural flavors that our farmers have worked so hard to provide us with.
SUMMERTIME LASAGNA

Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book:
The Best is Yet to Come
INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • •
4 medium zucchinis, thinly sliced lengthwise 4 yellow squash, thinly sliced lengthwise 2 large, ripe tomatoes, sliced crosswise 1 BULB of fresh garlic ½ sweet onion, thinly sliced 1 16 oz. container ricotta cheese 1 TBS dried Italian seasoning 2 TBS olive oil 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (if you prefer) Salt and pepper to taste
• • • • •
Preheat oven to 350F. Cut the entire top off the bulb of garlic. Loosely wrap the bulb into aluminum foil after adding some olive oil. Roast the garlic in the oven for 30 minutes and let cool. Once the garlic cools, remove it from the aluminum and squeeze it out of the bulb. Use as much or as little within the layers of your lasagna. (It also makes delicious garlic butter) Put a SMALL amount of olive oil in the bottom of your lasagna dish. Start layering with the tomatoes, then squash, zucchinis, and onion. Then add a layer of ricotta cheese. Repeat until you have filled the pan (make sure you don’t over-fill it because it will expand). Top the lasagna with shredded mozzarella, cover and put in the oven for 20 minutes. After that amount of time, remove the lid and let the lasagna continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes until the cheese starts to bubble in the middle. If you would like the cheese to crust, put it under your broiler. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CONTAINER IS BROILER SAFE! Let your lasagna rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing to ensure it has set up.

With the impending release of a star-studded album recorded at understandably psyched. Not only was the career-defining project produced by Harry Lee Smith (Restless Heart, Angeleena Presley, Martina McBride, Clay Walker) and multi-Grammy Award-winning producer/ engineer Ross Hogarth, it features none other than legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff on "Last of Our Kind." At the moment, however, "Day of the Trial" - the album taster making the rounds on the internet - is the song making waves. You can hear all of Brasher's southern rock and singer-songwriter influences coming together on this haunting, storytelling track - especially the likes of Steve Earle as evidenced by this doozy of a line: "I had the booze /You had nothing to lose/Nowhere to go and all night to waste." Which ultimately sets up a real dagger of a chorus: "All the parties and drugs/You and me were in love/ Right up till the day of the trial." Clearly, Brasher has no qualms about straying from the radio-friendly formula. "I realize that it's not music for the casual listener," he admits, "but there's a market out there for people who are looking for music that's outside the box." Currently, he's in talks with labels and publishers in Los Angeles, Nashville and New York, searching for just the right fit. "We're just not sure which way we're going to go yet," Brasher says.
day as the other two gigs." With Marion situated a couple hours away, the logistics did not look good, but obviously, Brasher couldn't pass up such a golden opportunity. A difficult call was then placed. "I asked my buddy how much of an a**hole I would look like if I canceled on his sister's wedding," he sheepishly notes. "He was like, 'pretty big.'" Time for Plan B. A second call was placed to a good friend in town who owned a Cessna airplane and agreed to fly Brasher to the Kid Rock show after the wedding. But that still wouldn't allow a big enough window for a proper soundcheck. "I had to split my band up - I kept my bass player with me, hired a local drummer and guitar player and sent the rest of the band on a bus to Marion to get everything set up before the show," Brasher explains. Come the big day, he hopped from corporate stage to wedding stage before finally boarding that Cessna with the clock ticking, touching down in Marion at 6 p.m. Like a scene out of a big budget music video, he was then whisked into a helicopter and delivered backstage in true rock star fashion, just in time to entertain 20,000 Kid Rock fans. "It was the most amazing experience, but what I appreciated most is that I didn't have to let my buddy down or break my corporate contract," Brasher says.
Having played all over the tri-state for years and served as a support act on several large scale tours, Brasher is hardly short on stories from the stage. But nothing can top his 2014 odyssey opening for Kid Rock. It all started innocently enough with Brasher booking a corporate gig on a Saturday afternoon from 11-2 p.m. As it turned out, his best friend's sister was getting married on the same day and the happy couple requested that he sing at the wedding. No problem. Then the unexpected happened. "About a week before, I get a call

DEVIL'S KNIGHT
BLOOD MOON PICTURES
OWENSBORO FILM PRODUCTION COMPANY WORKING TO SECURE FINANCING FOR FINAL CHAPTER OF POPULAR HORROR ANTHOLOGY
SPONSORSHIP PACKAGES TIER #4 - $5000 • Logo prominently appears 5 times across feature
Over the last five years, News 4U has followed the progress of Blood Moon Pictures, the Owensborobased film company behind the critically-acclaimed Volumes of Blood horror anthology and its gory sequel, VOB: Horror Stories - the former described by renowned website Dread Central as "Fresh...demented...and ideally
crafted!"
Co-owners/producers
P.J. Starks
and Eric Huskisson are currently working to secure financing for Devil's Knight, the third and final chapter of the VOB trilogy. The much-anticipated conclusion is set to star a number of notable actors from the horror genre, including Lynn Lowry (Cat People, The Crazies), Bill Oberst, Jr. (Three From Hell, Scream Queens) and Helene Udy (My Bloody Valentine, The Dead Zone) as well as get a helping hand from Tamara Glynn (Halloween 5) in an executive producer role. Starks and Huskisson are determined to go out on a high note with Devil's Knight, promising to up their game on every level and leave moviegoers appropriately shell-shocked. But they need tri-state business owners, in particular, to help make VOB 3 a reality. To that end, Blood Moon Pictures is offering up some excellent sponsorship packages that are guaranteed to be beneficial for all parties involved. If you'd like to support the arts in our community, please consider signing up for one of the following:

with Marisa Patwa THE SUMMER TV SEASON HEATS UP WITH THREE ICONIC AWARDS SHOWS SET TO AIR IN AUGUST
August is rife with celebrities and the biggest names in pop-culture walking red carpets, performing the best songs of the year and generally giving the internet great meme-worthy content. Now, if you’re a parent, chances are you have Nickelodeon on at least three times a week and have probably been to at least several little league games. Well, then you and your kiddo are in luck because Nickelodeon once again rolled out their signature orange carpet for the Kids' Choice Sports, which was filmed on Thursday, July 11 in Santa Monica, California, but won’t actually air until 7 p.m. CST on Saturday, Aug. 10. Some publicity pictures have already been released, which reveal a plethora of the biggest names in sports entertainment who attended and are nominated, including soccer superstars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, tennis player Serena Williams, Philadelphia 76ers point guard Ben Simmons, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, snowboarder Chloe Kim, skier Lindsey Vonn, and of course, bubbly host Michael Strahan. It promises to be a great show to highlight some of the most talented athletes in the game - and chances are you'll see them get slimed! For the pre-teens and teen crowd - or maybe just those not as athletically inclined tune to the Teen Choice Awards at 8 p.m. CST on Sunday, August 11 on Fox. This awards show is always super fun and caters to the growing digital Gen-Z audience, with categories like Choice Male Web Star, Choice YouTuber, Choice Gamer, Choice Comedy Web Star and Choice Fandom. As of press time, the host of this show hasn’t been announced, but odds are it’s someone pretty “lit.” And for the millennial and older crowd, the MTV Video Music Awards show airs at 7 p.m. CST on August 26. This iconic broadcast has been making news since 1984, bringing us some of the most memorable moments in pop-culture history, from Britney and Madonna’s kiss in 2003 to Miley Cyrus twerkin' on Robin Thicke in 2013. But what is unprecedented about this year’s show is that it's going to air live for the first time ever in its 36 years. I wonder what unforgettable moment we’ll see next...?

with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. Each month I'm offering up four bite-sized reviews, so read on and then listen in! Want more podcast recommendations? You can find long-form reviews, musings on happenings in the podcasting world, and links to podcasts I produce at my website: thepodreport.com or follow me on Twitter @ThePodReport.
BADVERTISING (WEEKLY)
In an age when major corporations have taken to intentionally manufacturing outrage about their products/practices for free social media advertising, the wonderful people of the (fictional) firm of Parker, Lennox, and Rose are all too happy to help. Each episode the three hosts - none of which have any marketing or business experience - choose a huge company and concoct the single best way for that company to get the worst advertising possible. From printing custom memes onto Pop Tarts to creating a Coca Cola VR/vape experience, Badvertising is here to ruin them all. lunarlightstudio.

DUMB AND BUSTED (WEEKLY)
The true crime podcast is a complicated genre as hosts vary wildly in ethics and what topics they’ll cover. Enter Dumb and Busted, a podcast that eschews the usual murder-obsessed shows featuring hyper-detailed descriptions of violence. Each episode, hosts Allyson and Hannah - often joined by a rotating cast of comedian co-hosts - examine a true crime story featuring a feat of monumental stupidity and genius (intentional or otherwise). This show scratches that true crime itch while also avoiding the fetishization of murderers that far bigger podcasts partake of regularly. Sometimes criminals are just dopes in the right places at the right times, and it can be hilarious. twitter.com/

HEAD TO TABLE (BETWEEN SEASONS)
Yes, there are plenty of podcasts where people play tabletop roleplaying games, but Head to Table goes the next step by having the hosts create a brand new game to play every episode. Hosts Tom and Thom take a theme of their choosing and brainstorm the mechanics necessary to build a fun, small RPG experience around. From playing as social vampires to buddy cops, the T(h)oms craft and test fantastic games that would be ideal for friends to enjoy on game nights. headtotable.com
SPIRITS (WEEKLY)
Yes, I’ve featured Spirits before, but there have been a bumper crop of exceptional episodes lately and the show deserves a re-visit! Spirits is a “boozy dive into myth and mythology,” each episode featuring hosts Amanda McLoughlin and Julia Schifini discussing a topic from myth and mythology, often bringing on guest experts. Things are never dull as regular episodes are supplemented with fan-submitted urban legends and “myth movie nights” in which the hosts cover a movie tied to a myth (e.g. Disney’s Hercules, 2015’s Krampus), all the while sporting theme-appropriate alcoholic beverages (including episode-specific cocktails for Patreon supporters). spiritspodcast.com

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT QUINCY
Evansville's Kerri Blessinger grew up with all sorts of animals, but the one thing her parents would never let her do was keep dogs in the house. So after graduating from college and getting her own place, she did just that, adopting a furry pal with full indoor privileges. Sadly, after 13 great years together, he had to be put down and Blessinger swore that was it: no more dogs. Then she tagged along with a friend to the VHS and everything changed. "There was this puppy by himself in a pen, sleeping in his food bowl," Blessinger recalls. "My friend got the dog out and I touched him - and I know it sounds crazy, but I was like, 'well, his name is Quincy and you might as well get the papers ready.' He's been with me ever since." Four years on, that bond is tighter than ever. According to Blessinger, the "certifiable mutt" is intensely loyal, a real mama's boy. And he really loves the water. On a trip to Florida, in fact, Quincy even kayaked, happy to float on forever. His brother Sam, a rescue from It Takes A Village that Blessinger adopted a couple years ago, is not quite so adventurous but the two still get along swimmingly. Another success story!

CATO NEEDS A FOREVER HOME! LONGTIME RESIDENT AT PC POUND PUPPIES LOOKING FOR A LOVING FAMILY Described as “Mr. Personality” by the volunteers at PC Pound Puppies in Posey County, Cato is a sweet boy with a great outlook on life - despite having lived the last five years at a shelter. One of his favorite things to do is ride in the car, and he will be the first one to call “shotgun!” Do you need a running partner? This hunk can help you train for your next 5K. He is the perfect balance of fun and calm, playing and chasing one of his tennis balls outside and then laying quietly on a rug to chew on a bone once in the house. Cato is good with children but the fine people at PC Pound Puppies ask that they be five and up as he might knock over little ones. He is a lover - but not of kitties and needs to be the only dog. He is house and crate trained, plus he has had sponsorship to cover heartworm, flea prevention and a starter supply of food. Cato is nine-years-old, neutered, microchipped and heartworm negative. His adoption fee is $150. Please help Cato find his forever home. He deserves a loving family that will care for him the rest of his days! However, Governor Holcomb and Brian Bosmawere were staunch roadblocks from the very beginning. The bill was assigned to the Public Health committee. The bill died there because Cindy Kirchofer would not place it on the agenda for discussion or a vote. Governor Holcomb personally labels marijuana as a gateway drug even though many studies do not support that stance. He also admits to marijuana use but has not clarified if it was a gateway drug for him. Another interesting approach to legalization of medical cannabis is the Convention of the States. Article V of the US Constitution allows the support of two-thirds of the states to propose amendments, which need to be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures, or a convention as set by Congress for that purpose. In this case, a convention of 34 states would be required, and 38 states would be necessary to ratify it and overturn the current scheduling of marijuana. As other states move to legalize medical cannabis this approach comes into play. However, this is not common and does not provide any immediate relief to Hoosiers in need now. Of course, patients can move to states where medical cannabis is legal, but this is not an option for patients like me where our disease has taken our ability to move. As a lifelong Hoosier and supporter of the Republican Party and liberty, this issue has rocked me to my core. So, I call on all my fellow Hoosiers to provide liberty to patients like me. Hold these legislators accountable for their actions and inactions. Many of these representatives can easily be unseated. For example, Cindy Kirchofer (R-D89 Warren/Beech Grove) lost 4 percentage points in 2 years and only won 2018 by 200 votes. That’s only 100 people switching their vote. Let’s send a message to both Bosma and Holcomb. I want you to engrain this message in your mind now for a couple reasons. These politicians will gloss over their decision of inaction that would have benefited thousands of Hoosiers battling many diseases of all ages. You must hold them accountable as they make their political spin to remain in power. The second; I might not be here to remind you of the negligence of their inaction. I have suffered much more than I should have. Their inability to heed the voices of Hoosiers makes them culpable to unwarranted harm for patients like me. They are aware of the numerous benefits of medical cannabis. However, they are conflicted by the Republican leadership and pharmaceutical donors. We have the power to end their confliction and move Hoosiers off the island of subjugation.

THE WRITE STUFF
with Jonathan Gluff The Cut Cord Cuts Back (or "Islands in the Stream[ing]")
Television was once thought of as the lowest of low-brow entertainment. From its inception with insipid slapstick comedies and game shows to the ‘80s when “sitcom” might as well have been a four-letter word, it was viewed as a stepping stone for actors to become movie stars at best and the next opiate of the masses at worst. Soap operas were trashy romance novels come to life, and most of those aforementioned sitcoms consisted of recycled tropes and scenarios, with canned laughter cuing viewers when to follow suit since the jokes usually weren’t funny enough to merit chuckles on their own. That practice is still done today by pretty much any network sitcom, with Chuck Lorre’s abominations (The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Mom, etc.) being the worst offenders. But at the beginning of the ‘90s, more robust and cinematic shows such as Twin Peaks and The X-Files showed that the oftmaligned “Idiot Box” could produce high art nearly on par with the big screen. This continued into the 2000s, with sitcoms such as Arrested Development, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and The Office (both the UK and US versions) proving they could be more than canned laughter, miscommunication clichés, and bathroom humor. The turn of the next decade ushered us into the so-called

“Golden Age of Television,” with shows such as Mad Men, Justified, and Louie consistently providing some of the best and most wellcrafted examples the medium has ever seen. This helped then-nascent streaming services like Netflix and Hulu thrive, with original content better than the sponsor-approved, watered-down drivel of the major networks and competitive pricing that drove many viewers (myself included) to ditch pricier cable packages. But instead of looking for ways to lower costs or produce higherquality programs, they’ve decided to punish consumers by pulling their content from the established streaming services. With The Office, Friends, and all Marvel IP’s moving to separate streaming services ranging from $6-$15/month, cord-cutters are left with a choice: Shell out more money for more services, go back to cable, or resort to piracy (which has been on the rise again). Of course, now would be a perfect time for the cable providers to try sensible things like eliminating contracts and equipment fees, but I’ve learned to not expect too much from them. One thing is for sure: When media conglomerates play dirty, we all lose.

VANDERBURGH DEMOCRATS: A PARTY WITHOUT A FACE
with Johnny Fletcher
For Evansville Democrats, things just went from bad to worse. First, the Democrats failed to put a candidate on the ballot to challenge the incumbent Lloyd Winnecke in this year's mayoral race. Now their party chairman Scott Danks has stepped down.
incumbent councilman. But there isn't one this time. Steve Melcher, a longtime Democrat councilman, is trying to win back his seat in the third ward that he gave up in 2016. That would be an option but the only problem is he's now running as a Republican.
When former Democratic Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel was running for reelection and widely popular, at least the GOP got some guy off the street to run against him. This year's Dems couldn't even muster up a "name on the ballot" candidate. As a result, this could be the first time in over 80 years - since the invention of television - that one of the major parties has no voice in the local election.
Missy Mosby is a possibility as the voice for the Dems but she just squeaked by a primary challenge in the second ward with cries of racism thrown in the mix. The only other incumbents besides Mosby running for the Democrats in the city council races are Jonathan Weaver and Jim Brinkmeyer. Weaver has his own personal issues. Brinkmeyer is a no name.
Perhaps Danks sensed this and decided to get on a lifeboat before the Titanic sunk in order to save face. Who knows? The timing of his departure is weird. Typically, party heads resign after the election, not before. So, who might emerge as the face of the Vandy Democrats in this year's election? In past elections, the Dems always had the advantage of the mayor's office, a party chairman, or a popular
GOP Chairman Wayne Parke is known to put his foot in his mouth at times. But we all know now in several election cycles that the GOP has been successful under his watch with not only getting Republicans elected but with fundraising as well. Parke will get the GOP machine up and running by the time Election Day is here. The only question is: will the Dems? Or will they even show up to the party?
Small Talk I may once again be looking back on the past with rose-tinted glasses (through bifocals, of course), but I would swear that my conversations with friends used to be a lot more interesting. And by interesting, I mean we discussed interesting stuff - books, movies, music, politics. Not that we don't touch on some of those subjects nowadays, but the main focus of our infrequent pow-wows - which happen via texting most times as talking has increasingly gone the way of the Edsel (warning: old guy reference) - is health problems. Don't know if you're aware of this just yet, but as one ages, the body tends to break down. And thus, by the time middle age hits, delightful afflictions such as high blood pressure, gout, dry eye syndrome, diabetes and more take center stage and become the "talking points." It makes sense, of course; after all, good health is paramount in life. But the appeal of blabbering on about upcoming doctor's appointments wears off fast, to be honest. Naturally, it's only going to get worse as the years pile on. I foresee a time when conversations between friends simply entail sending medical charts back and forth through the latest mode of communication. We will review the latest diagnosis and respond with either a thumbs up or sad face. Then again, maybe two decades from now we'll just take a pill to ward off any and all health problems. And be left with nothing much to "talk" about.

THE PERFECTION NETFLIX
The Perfection tumbles forward from moment to moment like a doe-eyes deer learning to walk. There are a few spills, some vomit and blood, and a lot of tears. Charlotte Williams (as Charlotte) leads the way through a turnabout plot, flipping expectations and making a name for herself as an actress who knows how to play a truly frightening anti-heroine. Logan Browning plays a supporting role as Charlotte's peer and eventual usurper as star pupil at the cello school to which both have dedicated their professional lives. After taking a long hiatus to help her dying mother, Charlotte returns to uncover the sorted tradition of the school that trained her, brought her to the stage, and, ultimately, led her to become the scarred young woman she is. As the title suggests, perfection is the focus of The Perfection, but it is not music that these characters are after. Their motivations are ruled by temptation. The perfect performance becomes a metaphor for euphoria, and the line between pleasure and sacrifice blurs until the main focus of the film slips into something closer to BDSM. Not that that is a bad thing in the case of Richard Shepard's latest creation. On the contrary. Rather, it points an otherwise derivative story toward something original and timely, if only to show that in the end ultimate perfection is a fool's errand. - John Thurgood
MURDER MYSTERY NETFLIX
Murder Mystery is what happens when a new platform signs an aging production company to a four-movie deal. The plot is fast-paced but dull, the actors are well-paired but flat, and the throughline holding the whole thing together has been done so many times it's become a lesson in what we already knew we didn't need to know. However, it's not Netflix's fault. The stale characters and lazy writing is the result of some seriously dedicated branding at Happy Madison Pictures. The tired formula never fails to give Adam Sandler the last laugh in every beat, all the good lines and a devoted female opposite who is far out of his league; Jennifer Aniston humors the role this go around. Once again, Sandler has to prove he is a capable adult, but not in the usual way, of course. Here, he has to prove he is a true detective - the position he has been applying for and not getting for years - by solving a high society murder a la Agatha Christie, and in the process, like so many Happy Madison films, he rediscovers the origins of his passions for both love and work. Jennifer Aniston does her best as the supporting female role, but as a hairdresser who loves mystery novels, she has a steep hill to climb in order to portray anything outside the trope caricature she's been given. The one shining grace of Murder Mystery is the chemistry between Sandler and Aniston. They have shared enough screen time together that between one liners and fart jokes a shred of actual playful camaraderie shines through. If nothing else, keep one eye open for those moments. - John Thurgood

X AMBASSADORS Orion Interscope
2/5 The lead single of this album is so similar in tone to Rag’n’Bone Man’s “Human” I genuinely feel with half an hour and the stems I could seamlessly blend them together. “Hey Child” is that song by way of Imagine Dragons, the chorus channeling “Human” while the rest of the song meanders around in standard pop fashion. I usually make a point of not harping on “the lead singer sounds like another famous singer” but when it’s a going trend that bands like X Ambassadors have issues finding a unique sound, making “Hey Child” both the first song on the album and a lead single signals to me that this is either a band trying to fill in the pop blanks to get people in the door or they don’t have a style of their own yet. The optimist in me chooses to believe the former because the rest of Orion works as a cohesive unit. It’s an album made by a band that knows what their own sound is. Three trend-chasing singles bring down the overall mood but at the end of the day, it’s a decent album to throw on and half-listen to while doing dishes. That’s something, at least? - Gavin Gaddis
TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB False Alarm Prolifica
4/5 False Alarm scratches that same indie vibe Foster the People used to fill for me back in the salad days of 2014. As soon as the first track hit the chorus it was like a time machine had transported me back into the driver’s seat of my first car, a $30 iPod Nano blaring Torches over a garbage FM transmitter. A terrible way to listen to music, but also a wonderful way to listen to moody indie pop/rock. A bygone era when I was all about indie dudes stretching the definition of the word “rock” to its breaking point. Right from the album art screaming “this is a Wes Anderson poster in an alternate reality” to the pseudo-80s synthpop backing of "Talk," False Alarm is the best introduction to a band I've had in a long time, trouncing even last month’s big surprise with the Jonas Brothers return. It’s rare I come away from an album I review both enjoying it and wanting to listen to more works from the band, yet here I am taking in more Two Door Cinema Club while writing this paragraph. - Gavin Gaddis

MARSHMELLO Joytime III Joytime Collective
1/5 I’ve given traditional EDM a wide berth since Skrillex was at his wub-wubbing zenith, during those halcyon golden years of the internet when Minecraft was still in beta and anything seemed possible. I’ve kept to my little bunker of lo-fi hip hop beats (accompanied by a looping animation of an anime student, of course) only to emerge and dip my toes back in with Joytime III. All I knew about Marshmello going in was his involvement in putting on a pre-recorded “live concert” in the game Fortnite as a special event. Having listened to his newest album, I now fully understand why Marshmello was the one tapped for such a sterile, constructed corporate event. From the knockoff Deadmau5 aesthetic to the same-y beats laid under a parade of featured artists, Marshmello seems to be adept at delivering the kind of EDM that sells really well with a younger audience. That is to say, the same handful of things re-packaged ad nauseam to maximize profits. He’s got a visual gimmick, a dance, but not that much music to back it up. Joytime III simply delivers more of the same Skrillex schtick.- Gavin Gaddis
LOUIE ZONG Levels: DLC Fuji Apple Records
4/5 Last year Louie Zong blew my mind by releasing Levels, an album of music composed with the conceit that it was the soundtrack for a non-existent Super Nintendo-era video game. It went beyond the usual YouTube musician concept of making music that references specific games for nostalgia points and created something that traded on the nostalgia of an idea. Now, in true video game fashion, Zong has put out a follow-up. Levels: DLC is very much like its predecessor in that it perfectly replicates the tone of late Super Nintendo / early Nintendo 64 music. But Zong goes the extra mile in crafting songs that both tick the boxes of being good songs while also potentially being usable in an actual video game. “Tutorial Time” is upbeat, energetic, and never over-states itself to the point where you’d notice if it looped (something very likely to happen on tutorial). “Fishing Minigame” and “Cat Shop” are so perfectly crafted to fit their titles the listener walks away knowing what the pond from the fishing minigame and the inside of the cat shop must look like, even though the game they’re written for doesn’t exist. LIL NAS X 7 Columbia Records
4.5/5 The voice behind the summer’s biggest hit, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X’s debut EP contains seven other songs all worthy of the same fame as the duet with Billy Ray Cyrus. With varying beats and easily understandable lyrics, 7 features not only Cyrus, but also the widely popular Cardi B on the seriously catchy "Rodeo." Another standout, “C7osure (You Like)” goes down smooth with some soft piano and a whistled melody, paired with Lil Nas X’s gentle singing. As a whole, this EP can be drawn to the likes of Anderson.Paak and The Weekend, yet boasts a sound all of its own. Lil Nas X has not only become an icon for his country-rap hit, but for his social media presence and personality. During Pride Month in June, he came out as a gay man with hopes of inspiring change within both the country and hip-hop industry. Before coming out officially, Lil Nas X pointed fans to the lyrics of “C7osure,” where he mentions that he cannot keep acting: “This is what I gotta do/can’t be regrettin’ when I’m old,” hinting at the fact that he came to terms with his sexuality. This album is not only perfect to sing along to, but is a game changer for the music industry. - Kendall Shanks
ABBATH Outstrider Season of Mist
4.5/5 Known as the former frontman of Norwegian black metal band Immortal, Abbath is back with a new solo album and the same iconic face paint. While Abbath’s first solo project was shrouded in controversy following his split from his Immortal bandmates, Outstrider has helped the multi-instrumentalist break ground of his own. It holds the quintessential aspects of Norwegian black metal: anger, Pagan imagery, and a raw sound. Outstrider, while still keeping a foot in the Norwegian black metal scene, also pulls influence from the heavy metal genre with clear, ringing guitar solos reminiscent of Dio. To pay homage to the Swedish metal band Bathory, the last track on Outstrider is a cover of “Pace ‘Till Death.” With its hammering beat and screeching guitars, Abbath brings a richer sound to an already heady song. While Outstrider may not have a standout track, it manages to convey the steady push and pull of deep, guttural vocals and ringing guitars. Free from the influence of the members of Immortal who pushed him out, Abbath plows his own path in the realm of Norwegian black metal. - Kendall Shanks
Blues with Bragin ALLY VENABLE Texas Honey Ruf Records 20-year-old blues rock guitarist Ally Venable is back with a taste of Texas Honey. On opener “Nowhere to Hide,” Elijah Owings’s drums provide a solid base for the song and Venable’s guitar solo showcases her talent very well. Three songs in, the title track discusses the risks of becoming involved with the singer. The heavy sound of “Blind to Bad Love” provides a nice backdrop for the lyrics about poisonous relationships. The guest appearance from Eric Gales on guitar and vocals for “Come and Take It” offers an extra layer to the song. A cover of the Stevie Ray Vaughan song “Love Struck Baby” pays homage to one of Venable’s main influences. Mike Zito’s guest appearance on “One Sided Misunderstanding” gives an extra emphasis to the melancholy in the lyrics about a lack of communication in a relationship. “White Flag," a heavy rocking number, contains solid guitar work from Venable, especially the blistering solo in the middle of the song. Texas Honey ends with a version of the blues classic “Careless Love.” While many versions of the song use acoustic instruments, this plugged-in take provides a great contrast while maintaining soulful vocals from Venable. - Paul Bragin
KINGFISH Kingfish Alligator Records And here's another freakishly talented 20-year-old blues rock guitarist, Mississippi's Christone "Kingfish" Ingram. His self-titled debut shines on “Fresh Out,” a song about lost love featuring blues legends Buddy Guy and Keb’ Mo’ on vocals and guitar. The stripped down acoustic tune “Been Here Before” discusses Kingfish’s status as an old soul and his grandmother’s words, “Child, you’ve been here before.” Marty Sammon’s sparse piano complements the song nicely. “If You Love Me” sees Keb’ Mo' providing extra guitar. Billy Branch’s harmonica gives the uptempo song an extra burst of energy. The slow Texas blues ballad “Love Ain’t My Favorite Word” matches the lyrics about a broken heart. Keb’ Mo’ returns on acoustic guitar and additional vocals for “Listen,” a song praising a woman for enriching everything in his life. “Before I’m Old” talks about the need to seize the day and enjoy life. The acoustic song “Hard Times,” recorded simply with Kingfish on vocals and Keb’ Mo’ on guitar, reflects on life’s difficulties and how a woman’s love eases the pain. - Paul Bragin

AUGUST BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. URBAN CHESTNUT GRAPEFRUIT RADLER
GOOSE ISLAND SPF
JONATHAN GLUFF - 4
Amongst the glut of fruit-flavored alcoholic drinks dominating the hard beverage market right now, Goose Island’s passionfruitand-pineapple-tinged SPF ale is, first and foremost, a beer; the fruit is merely there for support. Thankfully, since these folks already make one fantastic ale after another, they’ve got a strong foundation to build on. The dark notes underscore the darker side of the flavor, while the pineapple both slightly sweetens and softens for a super smooth finish.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5
A thick white head crowns this dark yellow beer and slowly evaporates. A burst of passion fruit dominates the scent profile. More subtle flavors of the passionfruit as well as pineapple notes hit the tongue while drinking the beer, but the flavor remains and intensifies a little bit in the long finish. Drink this beer on vacation at a tropical beach or add it as an ingredient to your favorite pineapple upside-down cake recipe.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a clear amber-colored beer with great carbonation. It has a light passion fruit flavor that's not overbearing. I can also taste a little bit of the earthy hops. It has a crisp finish and is pretty refreshing. Overall, it's very smooth - a great beer for the hot weather.

JONATHAN GLUFF - 3
Apparently, a “radler” is an obscure term for the Bavarian take on a shandy. So I’m going to warn you before you try this: While labeled a “lager beer with natural flavor added,” it’s mostly that natural flavor (grapefruit). Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing. The flavor hits all the right notes of a good summer drink, but is a tad on the sugary side. That may slow you down before the low ABV of 4.2%.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3
A thick head tops this pink colored beer and takes its time dissipating. The scent of grapefruit hits the nose as soon as the beer opens and intensifies in the glass. The grapefruit remains with the initial sip of the beer. If there are drinkers who wondered what Fresca would taste like with alcohol, this beer answers that question. If you have a fruity cake recipe, this beer might work as an addition to the dessert.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a pink beverage with decent carbonation. It has rich grapefruit flavors and a strong grapefruit aroma. It's a little sweeter than some other grapefruit beers I've had which makes it a good summer drink, perfect to sip by the pool.

JOIA SPARKLING COSMOPOLITAN
JONATHAN GLUFF - 3
I appreciate truth in advertising, like when Joia refers to their drinks as “mobile cocktails” and describes their Sparkling Cosmopolitan as “vodka with cranberry, pear, & lime natural flavors and carbonation” instead of trying to market it as a beer. The three fruit flavors marry well, with the tartness and sourness of the cranberry and lime, respectively, balanced against the sweetness of the pear. At 7% ABV, this refreshing drink will certainly liven up any party quickly.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3
A thin head forms on this beverage and evaporates almost immediately. The drink has a nice pink hue. The scent is fruity with perhaps a hint of alcohol at the end. The first sip contains a balance of fruit and carbonation, with the fruit remaining in the long finish. For drinkers who aren’t members of the Sex and the City cast, serve it with brunch or add it as an ingredient in your favorite fruity dessert.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a pink beverage with very little carbonation, so it's not very sparkling, actually. On the positive side, it has an ABV of 7%; still it comes off a little bit like weak punch. It has several fruit flavors but nothing that really sets this beverage apart from anything else.
NEWS4U AUGUST 2019 | BEER REVIEWS
WILD LEAF BLACK TEA
constitutes a good or bad tea. But given the prevalence of lemon and honey in this blend, I have to say that it’s far from the worst I’ve ever drank. Not my first choice, but if you like tea and booze, you could certainly do worse.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3 JONATHAN GLUFF - 3.5
I’m going to be honest right up front outside of an occasional Arnold Palmer, I’m not much of a tea drinker, so I’m a little out of my element when it comes to what
No head when pouring this tea since there’s no carbonation. The scent smells like regular iced tea. Likewise, the drink tastes like iced tea with a hint of alcohol. This might be a nice change of pace for someone who wants iced tea on a hot summer day but also wants
a slight kick of alcohol. Pair it with whatever foods you would normally pair with tea like spicy Asian and Indian cuisines or seafood.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3
This drink has no carbonation and it tastes just like tea - that's why I gave it a 3. Honestly, it's hard for me to fully review this beverage since I've never been a fan of tea. For those of you who prefer alcoholic drinks other than beer, this might be a good choice. It definitely lives up to its name.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
