MY POSSE IN EFFECT: A LIVE TRIBUTE TO THE BEASTIE BOYS BOKEH L OUN GE | S E P T E MBE R 13 | 9 P. M.

Time to get ill: Seven-piece live band recreates the sound of legendary hip hop act One of the most groundbreaking and most respected hip hop acts of all time, the Beastie Boys revolutionized the genre, evolving from the irresistible party vibe of debut Licensed to Ill to the studied, eclectic funk of 2011's Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. In between, the trio of Ad Rock, Mike D and MCA delved into sampling on sophomore effort Paul's Boutique - now considered a masterpiece - before going back to their punk roots with a live band approach on landmark releases like 1992's Check Your Head and 1994's Ill Communication - the latter featuring "Sabotage," a wall-of-sound juggernaut that continues to reverberate, standing as an undisputed rap classic. But the story of the Beastie Boys took a sad turn in 2012 when MCA passed away from cancer at the age of 47. Understandably, the remaining members chose not to continue, bringing an end to an unlikely career that broke all hip hop barriers and set the bar impossibly high. But just as unlikely, a group of Beastie Boys devotees out of St. Louis would pick up the torch and carry on the legacy. Enter My Posse In Effect: A Live Tribute to the Beastie Boys. This seven piece band replicates the authentic Beastie Boys experience with three MCs, a world class DJ, and visuals from their iconic video collection. And yes, they deliver all the unforgettable hits with the same brazen attitude and raucous stage presence that made Ad Rock, Mike D and MCA legends of the hip hop genre. When did My PIE play its first show? And was it a nod to the

were doing a bunch of DJ-ing and stuff in between or before the band got on. After the band rocked it and we tried to do more DJ-ing, the crowd was like super-pissed that we didn't have more material. So, it was one of those things where we had to kind of step back and be like, 'maybe we should do this for real and give it a real chance.' We got together and started learning more and more of the catalog. You know, it's always one of those things where it's hard to pick your favorites and what to play every night. We've tackled playing Licensed to Ill and Paul's Boutique now front-to-back. And then we'll take a break and come back out and do the other hits. Speaking of other hits, surely "Sabotage" has to be a total crowd-pleaser. It's always in the last three songs, at least. That's a great one to close with along with "Time to Get Ill" and "Fight For Your Right" and "So What Cha Want" - they're all good and by the end, most people have had a few to drink, so it's a good party crowd. You know, it takes people down memory lane - a lot of people tell us that it reminds them of high school. No doubt you've been asked this a thousand times, but have you gotten any feedback from the surviving Beastie Boys? Oh, man, we get asked this all the time. But to cut right to the point, Mike D and Ad Rock have never acknowledged us. [Beastie Boys DJ] Mix Master Mike is all over our Instagram; like literally, he'll like something from two months ago sometimes, so obviously, he knows who we are. We've had [Beastie Boys photographer and unofficial "fourth member"] Ricky Powell correspond with us; we've had [Beastie Boys collaborator] Money Mark comment on stuff before - as well as [Beastie Boys touring drummer and percussionist] Alfredo Ortiz. He came over at the end of one of our sets and chopped it up with our drummer for a little bit. But that's pretty much the extent of it. Well, at least you've got some of the group's posse on your side. Well, they're not angry with us [laughs]. We're very curious to hear what Mike D and Ad Rock think about it. They'd probably call us cornballs [laughs]. For more info, visit myposseineffect.com or bokehlounge. com. Bokeh Lounge is located at 1007 Parrett St. in downtown Evansville.

Wynonna is on that shortlist. As one half of the hugely successful country duo The Judds, she scored a total of 14 number one hits with mother Naomi before going solo in 1992, shedding the last name tied to such phenomenal success. Not to worry, of course. Right out of the gate, Wynonna, her self-titled debut, reeled off three chart toppers - "She Is His Only Need," "I Saw the Light" and "No One Else on Earth" - and went multi-platinum in the process. More million-selling albums and top 10 singles followed over the years, along with an evolving sound that saw Wynonna adopt a more bluesy approach on 1997's The Other Side. After reuniting with mother Naomi for a spell and releasing New Day Dawning (1999) and What the World Needs Now Is Love (2003), she took an extended break from the studio before reappearing with Sing: Chapter 1 in 2009. Primarily a covers album, it set the stage for another Judds reunion the following year. In 2011, Wynonna debuted The Noise, her rocking new band, releasing several singles over the next few years as a lead-up to the new lineup's first studio effort which officially dropped in 2016. She continues to tour on the back of the critically-acclaimed album, boasting a raw, organic live sound perfectly suited for her big vocals. For tickets and more info, visit haaa.org. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn headlines annual eco-friendly music festival

Located just an hour north of Evansville, the Ferdinand Folk Fest is a free, eco-friendly event featuring a diverse lineup of musicians representing the best in Americana, folk, reggae, roots blues and more. Away from the main stage, local singer-songwriters perform for the art market - a whole separate festival unto itself. There, regional artists and artisans display and sell their handmade work, including pottery, photography, clothing and jewelry. In addition, numerous environmental and community groups congregate to educate festival goers about everything from air quality to solar energy and organic farming. And there's plenty for the kids to do, so bring the whole family for a full day of live music and fun, thought-provoking activities.

Billed as a 1920s Mafia Marriage Murder Mystery, this unique event will both tease the brain and please the stomach with a night of fun that's part Dateline and part buffet dinner. Guests will go back in time to the roaring 1920s with the Dunn Speakeasy serving as the setting for the evening. There, the wedding of the year takes place - a "married to the mob" scenario that can only end one way: in death. And that's where the crimesolving comes in. While enjoying a truly sumptuous meal, guests will be tasked with playing detective, all working to put the pieces together and unveil the culprit. To appropriately set the mood, guests are encouraged to come dressed in their best flapper dresses, zoot suits, feather boas, pinstriped suits and fedoras -the more mafia-like, the better. But you can also don traditional wedding attire or just come as you are. R I S I NG COUN TRY S TA R ON HI S WAY T O W E S T ER N KY IN SU P P ORT OF DE BU T MA JOR L A B E L AL B UM After five well-received independent releases and sold-out shows from coast to coast, country singer Cody Johnson signed on with Warner Music Nashville for Ain't Nothin' To It, his 2019 major label debut that topped the Billboard Country Albums chart back in January. Its number one status was a well-deserved milestone for the Texas native whose heartfelt vocals and basic musical approach harken back to the heyday of country - which is more than evident on "On My Way To You," the affecting lead single that's truly captured the attention of Johnson's growing fanbase. To date, the song has over 50 million on-demand streams and the accompanying video has racked up nearly 13 million YouTube views. But it's not just the fans that are taken with Johnson's major label debut. Ain't Nothin' To It has received high marks from the critics as well, including a 4/5 rating from All Music. Seems just about everyone's on board with the album's merging of classic country with a modern sensibility. And now Johnson is ready to bring his refreshing sound to the Owensboro Sportscenter stage with special guests Tyler Booth and Carlton Anderson. By all accounts, this promises to be a seriously high-energy show - and a sell-out for sure so don't wait to buy your tickets! For tickets and more info, visit owensborosportscenter.com. or five takes, generally. But the character was only meant for one episode, but we did, like, 13 or 14 different takes. And it kind of set on the Perd that sounded like a news reporter but says goofy things. So that's how that came to be. And then the character just became more popular and, you know, different writers tried to do Perd. But it all kind of stayed on the center line of the news-sounding guy saying goofy things. You've said in previous interviews that you're not a naturally funny person, but your comic instincts and timing were impeccable as Perd. Well, thank you for that. I mean, I was just copying Mo Collins she's an incredible actor and highly underrated. You know, she did all that great stuff with Mad TV. I was just copying what she was doing because at the time I wasn't really an experienced actor other than some high school musical theater. But these were, you know, trained craftspersons and the only thing that I had over them was that I could sound like a real news reporter. It must have been a particularly amazing experience considering the talent on Parks & Recreation. You know, look who I was working with - Chris Pratt, Rob Lowe, Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman. These are extremely talented actors and thespians and, you know, I'm fortunate enough to be a person who can imitate and copy and learn from that. So, I was kind of in a master class every day I was on set when I was working with one of those characters. Don't give anything away, of course, if you'd rather keep the element of surprise, but do you have any thoughts about your turn as ParksFest emcee or what you have planned? I know that I'm probably going to sing a couple of tunes, because first and foremost, I'm a musician before an actor. I have a popular little show here in Los Angeles that's kind of a tribute to Barry White and Lou Rawls. And so, I may do some of that music. But as far as emceeing goes...I'm sure I'll say some Perd Hapley lines like, 'the story of this event is...' or that kind of stuff. I appreciate that people love that character. You know, you have to be able to read the crowd, so maybe it will become an all-Perd event. Regardless, it looks like you have a great time at ParksFest - it's a great community event. I'm really looking forward to it. For more info, visit parksfestevansville.com.

Every October, Historic Newburgh serves as the creepy backdrop to some truly spooky tales detailing the area's haunted past. These "Ghost Walks," as they're appropriately known, always leave attendees of all ages wide-eyed and entranced by their tour guide's bone-chilling stories. No monsters jump out, no blood-curdling screams echo in the night; the scares are purely psychological - and lots of fun! For the 26th edition of Ghost Walks, organizers are bringing back the popular Hayride Tour in addition to the traditional eerie strolls down Water & State Streets. Rest assured all three tours are guaranteed to "enlighten and frighten." Water Street Tour Hear ghost stories from Newburgh's early settler days, the Civil War Era, and even ghostly events that occurred during the 1900s. Featured stories include the tale of the Steamboat Missouri and the Newburgh Tobacco Company's "Homespun Twist." State Street Tour More astonishing tales from the Civil War Era and the early 1900s make this a spooky tour, indeed. Learn the unnerving truth about the tragedy at Farmer's Bank, the Exchange Hotel's slave history and Hulvershorn's Coffin Shop. Hayride Tour (limited seating available) Bring your family and friends for a hayride through Historic Newburgh's downtown district as turn of the century tour guides and re-enactors regale you with mysterious ghost stories. An optional walk across the historic red bridge will only add to the intrigue. Guided walking tours depart every 12 minutes from Preservation Hall (200 State Street). Each tour lasts app. an hour. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. For tickets and more info, visit historicnewburgh.org or call 812-853-2815. Walk tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Hayride tickets are $15.

IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock

Tomato season is winding down so every time I have the chance, I grab some when they are still green and fry them. I’m aware that with Fall Festival fast approaching we're all going to be feasting on fried goodness, so I wanted to put a little bit of a healthier spin on this delicacy with my new favorite kitchen appliance, the “Power-Air-Fryer Oven Elite." It fries, dehydrates, roasts, and rotissifies. I’m aware that is not a word but it’s fun to say! I use the typical breading procedure, but in all honesty, it’s all in the seasoning that you choose. It really depends on what region that you live in and what is fresh at the time. When breading, using dried herbs and spices is far superior to trying to use fresh. I have a six-quart air-fryer that has three shelves, so I only cook a few tomatoes at a time to ensure that there's enough air flow around and they all get crispy.

Find more recipes on

Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book:

The Best is Yet to Come

AIR “FRIED” GREEN TOMATOES INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • •

4 medium, firm, green tomatoes 2 large, preferably farm fresh eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup Panko 1 TBS season salt 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp dried parsley 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper Dried chili peppers, to taste (I use Thai Dragon)

DIRECTIONS: • • • • • • •

Slice your tomatoes ¼ inch thick and place them directly on a paper towel to draw out the excess moisture. Put the flour on a plate and season with half each of the season salt, garlic powder, dried parsley, and black pepper. Whisk the eggs and set them in a container in between the flour and the Panko. On another plate, season the Panko with the rest of the dry seasonings. Either using tongs or gloves, pass the tomatoes from the flour to the eggs and then into the Panko. As you finish each tomato, place it on one of the fryer trays and let it set for at least 5 minutes to let the breading “stick.” Each air fryer will have different settings but mine suggested that I use the “French fry” button at 400F for 10 minutes. I added 2 more minutes because I like mine a little crispier.

If you have a fryer like mine, I realize that you might have to pause the cooking and rotate the shelves. Mine cooks higher on the top rack. *For a quick spicy dip: Mix 2 TBS mayonnaise with 1 TBS Thai style chili sauce, 1 tsp fresh parsley, and a squeeze of fresh lemon. “JUST MAKE IT TASTE GOOD”

with Marisa Patwa FROM COMEDY-THRILLERS AND HORROR REMAKES TO A FUTURISTIC SPACE STORY, SEPTEMBER OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF MOVIE MAGIC

For a perfect movie night out with the girls, check out female comedy Hustlers, which arrives in theaters on 9/13. Not to be confused with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson’s May movie The Hustle, Hustlers follows a group of females strippers who end up pulling off a big con on their unsuspecting male customers. The film is written and directed by Lorene Scafaria and has an all-star cast, which includes Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Cardi B and Lizzo. The film is based off the New York Magazine article “The Hustlers at Scores” written by Jessica Pressler in 2015, which detailed real city strippers who hustled wealthy Wall Street men. For a scary film, check out IT Chapter Two, the highly-anticipated horror sequel out on 9/6. It features an A-list cast playing our favorite childhood gang who survived bloodthirsty clown Pennyworth (played by the haunting Bill Skarsgård) now all grown up. The remake of Stephen King’s classic best-seller includes Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader to name a few. And from some of the early press video clips of the actors, it’s clear this whimsical cast also has crazy chemistry, which only helps them capture the familial essence their characters all have with each other as adults, as they once again battle the scariest clown of all time. Still recovering from Brad Pitt’s scene-stealing performance as stuntman Cliff Booth in this summer’s original blockbuster, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? Then check out Pitt’s latest project, eerie sci-fi film Ad Astra, out on 9/20. Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones also star. Pitt plays a mysterious astronaut on a mission to find his father, who disappeared on a space mission 20 years ago, which sounds vaguely similar to the plot of the most recent Lara Croft film, starring Alicia Vikander, minus the bow and arrow and plus the spacesuit. With a female empowerment message in the drama Hustlers, a creepy childhood tale in IT Chapter Two and a cool, outer space flick in Ad Astra, you really can’t go wrong this September at the box office.

While others endure long slogs of nothing while talking about filler episodes nobody remembers or cares about, ...These Are Their Stories talks about only episodes of the three original Law & Order properties with ripped-from-the-headlines plots. FAN WARS: THE EMPIRE CLAPS BACK (MID-SEASON HIATUS)

A romantic comedy for the internet age, Fan Wars: The Empire Claps Back is a fiction podcast depicting the Skype conversations of Jackie and Steven, two major fans of Star Wars who come down on different sides on The Last Jedi (spoiler alert: Steven’s on the side of the trolls and Russian bots). But their bickering slowly blossoms into a friendship, perhaps even more someday. Each bite-sized episode will leave you cackling and wanting to re-watch your favorite Star Wars flick. THE WORST SITCOM EVER MADE (COMPLETE) From Radio New Zealand comes a glimpse into a 90s sitcom that’s hilarious for all the wrong reasons. A fledgling television network in New Zealand decided they wanted to capitalize on the success of mid-90s American multi-camera situational comedies (e.g. Friends, Seinfeld) becoming the mostwatched television shows by producing a distinctly Kiwi sitcom. It failed, hard. Follow lead writer Geoff Houtman as he interviews cast, crew, and network execs to tell the story of a show so bad several crew members left the country to escape its negative reputation. As fascinating as it is hilarious, the story of Melody Rules plays out like an incredibly low-stakes true crime podcast. rnz.co.nz/programmes/ the-worst-sitcom-ever-made

SLEEP WITH ME (THRICE WEEKLY)

Drew Ackerman has insomnia and a good voice. Using the powers of one to fight the other, he runs a podcast designed to lull one to sleep as they listen to the host’s pleasant drone. A combination of topnotch improvisation skills and intentional tangents prolong even mundane stories into delightfully sleepy adventures. Some feature Ackerman recapping an episode of a popular TV show (from Dr. Who to Game of Thrones), some are parts of serialized adventure stories created for the podcast. I’ve never heard the end of an episode of Sleep With Me, and for once that’s a glowing endorsement.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT NALA & SAGE

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

SCOOTER: Scooter is a male black Lab/Pointer

mix. He’s estimated to be about 3 years old. He was transferred in to VHS from Evansville Animal Control so not much is known about his background. But since being at VHS, he has gotten along great with other dogs and gone to many offsite events without any issues! His adoption fee is $110 and includes his neuter & shots.

Evansville's Montana Lee and Drake Turner were devastated when they had to put down Tipsy, one of their two beloved cats. With just 12-year-old Midnight around, they were anxious to fill the void and promptly headed over to the VHS where there's currently a "zillion" furry felines to choose from. So many, in fact, that Lee and Turner spent four hours searching for just the right one...make that two. "We figured if we got two then they'd play with each other and leave Midnight alone," Lee explains. "He's essentially retired and doesn't like to be bothered too much." After picking out a pair of adorable kittens which they named Nala and Sage, Lee and Turner carefully planned out the meeting process with Midnight to ensure that there would be harmony in the home. For starters, the kittens were kept separated from their new senior friend for several days with smells introduced via blankets and the swapping of toys. Eventually, the three were brought together and while there was some initial hissing as Midnight established his dominance, an unexpected bond was formed and now the old guy can be found playfully chasing Nala and Sage around - the most exercise he's gotten in quite a while. Another successful adoption!

THE WRITE STUFF

with Jonathan Gluff Punching Left and Right (or “Basically Asking for Hate Mail”)

Hello, and welcome to another edition of “Jon Makes Both Sides of the Aisle Angry With Common-Sense Political Statements.” (It’s just a working title for now. Also intended as very tongue-in-cheek.) Another month, another string of events that has people facing off over immigration, namely the recent “public charge” rule changes. If you aren’t familiar with them, they state that the likelihood of an immigrant using public assistance may now affect their probability to be admitted into/extend their stay in the US. Naturally, outrage was widespread and outspoken. Don’t get me wrong - I’ll be the first to tell you I often disagree with conservatives on immigration, especially when arguments are based on what I like to call “Schrödinger's Immigrant” (one who is somehow simultaneously a lazy criminal and a job stealer, which takes an amazing amount of mental gymnastics to actually believe in). And I’m certainly no fan of Trump’s constant self-contradictions and teenage tweeting etiquette (no offense to teenagers, most of whom post with more restraint). But these rule changes really aren’t that different from the immigration standards of the country all celebrities with a Messiah and/or martyr complex constantly threaten to move to whenever a conservative president takes

office: Our friends in the Great White North, Canada. As of 2017, moving to Canada as a skilled worker (which is the fastest way for anyone who is neither seeking asylum nor has Canadian family members) costs roughly $12,700 CAD (just over $9,400 US) in filing fees for a single person, as well as an additional $2,500 US per accompanying family member (up to a maximum of 6). And that’s not even taking into account the complicated point-based assessment system, awarding various points in categories of Education, Language Skills, Experience, Age, Arranged Employment, and Adaptability, or the fairly lax (but still present) work history requirements. There are also Business/Entrepreneur Immigrant Investor Programs, but unless you have a net value of $225,000/$600,000 US respectively, that’s not worth mentioning. My point in all this is that sometimes a little perspective can go a long way. On the surface (and taking some of his past statements into account), these rule changes sound pretty bad. But when you look at other countries’ immigration requirements, they’re not that extreme. Let’s all take a deep breath and put down the pitchforks for the time being.

TRI-STATE

POLITICS with Bryan Fox

ADVICE FOR THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIRWOMAN The Vanderburgh County Dems have selected the person they want to lead their party: Edie Hardcastle. One could argue, however, that with Mayor Winnecke set to win a third term and Councilwoman Connie Robinson leaving the Democratic party and not seeking re-election, it's definitely not the best time to run the county party - but it does give the Dems some positive news coverage. With the municipal elections just months away, it's really too late in the game for Hardcastle's presence to be felt this election cycle. However, local Dems should give Hardcastle a chance and with good reason. Hardcastle's previous activism, as president of Indivisible Evansville and as a candidate herself for a state senate seat, has proven she will be more hands-on than her predecessor, Scott Danks. Danks, a fulltime attorney, apparently couldn't devote the time that was needed to take on what was essentially another full-time position. Hardcastle, who is a professor at USI, should be able to devote more time. Her passion about the issues shows she will make the time. But with that being said, she needs to be careful to not steer the

county party too far left. Indivisible doesn't shy away from hatred of our current president. If you go to their website, the first item they promote is impeaching Trump, a stance that just doesn't play well nationally with moderates. Hardcastle, as president of the Evansville chapter, was the face of Indivisible locally. It would be in the party's best interest for her to set aside her own ideals for the sake of winning. Speaking of winning, Hardcastle might want to learn from the mistakes of the Tea Party. Much like Indivisible vs. Trump, the Tea Party was created to go against Obama's agenda almost a decade ago. They became so powerful they were able to unseat establishment candidates that the GOP supported in the primaries. The problem was that a lot of these candidates supported by the Tea Party were either undisciplined or unelectable. Hardcastle might want to steer away from the sort of candidates Indivisible would get behind and focus instead on getting the best candidates to win the November elections. Hardcastle has shown her passion and her activism. Let's see if it means more votes for Dems at the ballot box.

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD...

with Johnny Fletcher THE WALTER MATTHAU EFFECT

There's really something to the cliché of "grumpy old men" - call it the Walter Matthau effect. As time goes by and stubbornness sets in, even the littlest thing can get under your skin (granted, it's so loose and wrinkly) and irritate to the core. Currently, I find myself annoyed beyond all sense of reason by the over-use of "fam" - short for "family," of course, because those extra two syllables were apparently a big strain on everyone. Couldn't tell you how or why the abbreviation came to be - nor do I care - though I'm sure Jay-Z is involved somehow. Regardless, it's been in heavy rotation for the last couple of years, particularly in the scripts for commercials as companies attempt to market their products to Millennials. That's all fine and good and par for the course, etc. But then CBS had to go and create a TV series called Fam to capitalize on the abbreviation's inexplicable popularity. Mercifully, the painfully unfunny show was cancelled after just one season - which really should have been a big old nail in the coffin, but somehow society still wants more. In fact, I just saw a new commercial the other morning where "fam" gets the star treatment once again. Soon enough we'll all be living in a monosyllabic world where I'll be referred to as "grum" - short for "grumpy," of course.

ROLLING THUNDER REVUE: A BOB DYLAN STORY BY MARTIN SCORSESE NETFLIX

The key word in the title of this documentary film that focuses on Dylan’s much-praised Rolling Thunder Revue 1975 concerts (which fell between the releases of his #1 studio albums Blood On The Tracks and Desire) is “story.” Having previously collaborated on the critically-acclaimed, straight-up (for the most part) documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, Scorsese and Dylan seem intent on having some fun unfolding this film where some of the documentation is somewhat dubious and even flat-out false. At the time of its release earlier this summer it caused quite a ruckus amongst Dylan and film fans but once I figured out the thematic gist of the film, I was fine with it and found it very funny at times. I have a feeling that Scorsese and Dylan wanted to extend the playfulness of Dylan’s own film that he directed of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour, Renaldo And Clara (1978), where fact and fiction were also blurred. The bottom line though is the actual musical performances are amazingly exhilarating and perfectly capture Dylan at the top of his game. - Ted Haycraft

LOCAL HERO

CRITERION COLLECTION DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASE DATE: 9/24/19 Can you still use the phrase ‘they don’t make them like they used to’ without sounding too clichéd and old? Anyway, I’m certain someone can point to a current similar example of a film like this but check out the unique casting for one of my favorite films, 1983's Local Hero: Hollywood legend Burt Lancaster, underrated Animal House veteran Peter Riegert, Star Wars IV trivia question Denis Lawson, future Dr. Who Peter Capaldi and Jenny Seagrove (who I always get mixed up with Jenny Agutter). The story basically follows the attempt of Riegert’s character, under the orders of Lancaster’s kooky Texas oil CEO, to buy up a seaside Scottish town and the land around it to dump oil refineries onto it. As the story unfolds, you can see what’s coming but it evolves in such a magical and whimsical way you won’t be disappointed. The film is directed marvelously by the very overlooked Scottish director Bill Forsyth (Gregory’s Girl, Comfort And Joy) and also contains a wonderful score by Mark Knopfler. Local Hero needed and deserved a 2K digital restoration from the fine folks at Criterion with the sort of insightful special edition features they're known for. - Ted Haycraft

CHANCE THE RAPPER The Big Day Self-Released

3/5 When he’s not singled-handedly keeping SoundCloud afloat with donations as they hemorrhage money, Chance the Rapper has played the music game and played it well. Unfortunately, this success is somewhat to the detriment of his debut album, in my opinion. I wasn't tuned in during his early days hitting the digital pavement with SoundCloud mixtapes. Rather, my first engagement with Chance The Rapper was a candy bar commercial well into his meteoric rise to fame. Perhaps there's a more interesting narrative to how much he's matured as a musician over the years, but as far as I'm hearing this is just… a pretty good rap album? If you like him, you'll like this. From the outside looking in, that's basically it. The Big Day is fine. - Gavin Gaddis

SUM 41 Order in Decline Hopeless Sum 41 is back with some rad album art and some confused songs. There's a disconnect between the band's songs and the actual music backing them. On occasion these chocolate and peanut butter elements find a happy balance of rock. The majority of the time, though, the chugging 1980s metal backdrop doesn't mesh with the early 2000s pop-punk style. The music wants to hang out with Ozzy Osbourne and set something on fire; the lyrics want to go sit at the table in the corner with Good Charlotte and Bowling for Soup while they make snarky posts on Twitter. That said, Order in Decline does get bonus points for the best "the current president is not good, actually" song I've encountered in my five years reviewing media. - Gavin Gaddis

ELECTRIC YOUTH Memory Emotion Watts Arcade, Inc./Last Gang Records

4.5/5 Forgive the hokey wordplay, but with Memory Emotion the duo of Electric Youth bring a spark to synth-pop. The genre is certainly capable of some incredible music, as all subgenres are, but most of what comes to my attention is soulless 1980s-sploitation. Just drop $200 on FL Studio and learn how to wail on that for three minutes with a drum machine. Memory makes the important distinction of scratching one’s desire for sweet synths that also serve as a functional part of a cohesive song. Bronwyn Griffin’s singing voice is an important instrument in the band as opposed to an afterthought on a pre-made beat. Their combined powers deliver a tight album full of soothing positive songs about relationships. - Gavin Gaddis

KAISER CHIEFS Duck Polydor

4.5/5 Loyal readers won’t have trouble picking up on the common thread that I’m a sucker for a good British indie rock band. Well, before you cheat and look at the star rating, bear with me while I defend my stance that the Kaiser Chiefs have delivered a heck of a fun album. The lyrics of the chorus to “Target Market” alone make for an incredibly fun sing-along session, with the rest of Duck following in close lockstep. There’s an almost They Might Be Giants-esque quality to the Kaiser Chiefs’ style. They don’t deliver anywhere near as many non-sequiturs (or surprisingly death-obsessed songs) but they still feel in the same neighborhood if only because of the pure fun sing-along factor. A must-listen. Gavin Gaddis

K. FLAY Solutions Interscope Many an artist has tried (and failed) to tap into the millennial zeitgeist, generally coming off as insufferably inauthentic. It's painfully obvious when someone who's had it pretty easy in life tries to be hashtag relatable with a generation for whom the idea of basic things like medical care regularly have to be crowdfunded. Then along comes K. Flay, encapsulating the inherent frustration and everyday rebellions that come with being in the 18-35 demo in 2019. Lyrics like "I don't think I'm perfect but I've got some stuff together," serve as kindling to fire one up, only to be stoked into flames by "This Baby Don't Cry." Solutions prepares the listener to live one's life their own way, ready to kick back when life inevitably tries to drag you down. - Gavin Gaddis

ALLDAY Starry Night Over The Phone OneTwo

2/5 It’s difficult to tell when heavy use of fake harmony and Auto-Tune is an artist keeping up with the trends or just a musical crutch. When a rapper like Watsky breaks into Auto-Tune there is a point; Starry Night, however, delivers it full-on with seemingly no purpose. Allday seems to want to deliver an emotional album but if one divorces his content from that of the featured artists his content falls short on delivery. Be it intentional or not, he’s using the same techniques labels use to effectively force a not-singing voice to sound like it can sing (see: Justin Robert’s “Six Figures,” or really anything made by a rich white YouTuber nobody’s heard of). Wanna hear some white dude slow-rap basic topics but with an Australian accent? Allday’s your ticket. - Gavin Gaddis

VIOLENT FEMMES Hotel Last Resort [PIAS]

3/5 Nearly 40 years ago the first incarnation of Violent Femmes was formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Nine albums later, the band is back with Hotel Last Resort, a collection of American folk punk that falls somewhere between classic Violent Femmes and a redundant sound. The uninspiring song “I'm Nothing,” with its political, yet somehow apolitical message, is simply the same song from the 1994 album New Times apart from a few added lines. In fact, it's almost a distasteful anti-political song given today’s political state. With the same sound heard on “Blister in the Sun” and “Add It Up" from the band's 1983 debut, it's a toss-up as to whether this album is simply boring or a valiant attempt to stick to the Femmes' famous sound. - Kendall Shanks

OF MONSTERS AND MEN Fever Dream Republic Records Of Monsters and Men are back with their third studio album, a mix of synth and folk sounds similar to artists like Hozier and Chvrches. The band has truly mastered the genre spectrum, creating a softer, folk-like resonance on the song “Sleepwalker,” while also verging into synthesized beats and heavier bass notes. While there is no standout song that compares to their first hit “Little Talks” in 2011, Fever Dream is an album that in its entirety, captures the mood and musical soundscape of summer festivals: trance-inducing beats, resonating vocals, and an airy ambiance. It may not be the hit album of the season, but it has earned its spot on end of summer playlists. - Kendall Shanks

SAUL WILLIAMS Encrypted & Vulnerable Pirates Blend Records Inc.

4.5/5 Conceptual genius Saul Williams has finally released Encrypted & Vulnerable, the companion piece to his upcoming musical. The message of this transcendental album, as stated by Williams, is to question and fight the heteronormative, patriarchal society through avenues of love, war, and migration. Existing in its own genre, Encrypted pulls from spoken word, noise music, and hip-hop, stretching out creatively not only in the lyrics, but in the fact that there are no drum beats. These “invisible beats” allow the listener to feel the music; any beat heard on the album is created through other sounds beyond drums. At the true peak of creativity, Encrypted & Vulnerable is an album that leaves listeners eagerly awaiting Saul Williams’ musical release. - Kendall Shanks

PURPLE MOUNTAINS Purple Mountains Drag City Purple Mountains is the final project by the late David Berman, releasing just a few weeks before Berman took his own life at the age of 52. I won’t lie, Purple Mountains is an incredibly sad album that practically acts as a 10-song suicide note for Berman. Sad as it may be, his final musical statement is a masterpiece. Every song is packed to the brim with heartbreak and brilliant lyricism. There is no singular standout song, as they are all fantastic, but one line in particular haunts me: “The dead know what they’re doing when they leave this world behind / when the here and the hereafter momentarily align” Berman sings in “Nights That Won’t Happen.” Purple Mountains is the place and moment where things temporarily aligned for Berman, and he has left its beauty behind for all of us. - Russ Finn

Blues with Bragin SHAUN MURPHY Reason to Try Vision Wall Records Legendary blues singer Shaun Murphy is a fixture in Bob Seger’s touring band. Now she returns with Reason to Try. Opener “Hurt Me Good” begins as a slow blues ballad before morphing into a more funk-driven tune with Eric Robert’s organ work. The self-explanatory “Thang For You” features piano from Kevin McKendree and Miqui Gutierrez on sax - a combo that provides a nice base for the song. Kenne Cramer’s blistering guitar solo in “Turn Me On” contrasts nicely with Murphy’s powerful vocal. The title track “Reason to Try” starts with a great piano solo from McKendree. The lyrics about persevering through hard times give the song a great gospel blues vibe. McKendree’s piano and local hero Tommy Stillwell’s guitar on “Love the Man” give the song a solid beat for dancing. “Road House Rockin’” is a three-and-a-half minute party highlighted by Stillwell’s guitar. The heavy rock song “Power of Love” benefits greatly from the double lead guitar from Cramer and Stillwell. “Rumor Mill” discusses the negative aspects of spreading misinformation. The haunting ballad “Someday,” written by Murphy’s musical partner Bob Seger, looks towards a brighter future for everyone. - Paul Bragin

Toeing the line between a beer and a fruitinfused alcoholic beverage may be a popular game that many breweries fail at, but 10 Barrel Brewing have done it well again with their Raspberry Sour Crush. Despite the sour prominence of raspberry on the palate, there’s still a decent lager underneath. It makes for a sweet/sour crisp concoction. The “Drink beer outside” suggestion near the bottom of the can really sums it up - this is a perfectly refreshing summer beer.

A thin white head forms on this beer but quickly disappears when poured in a tulip glass. The scent boasts a lot of raspberry and seems reminiscent of sweet raspberry candy or jam. The first taste is muted at first before sour raspberries hit the tongue. Pair it with a light balsamic vinegar salad or a berry tart. During the hot summer months, you can also try it over vanilla ice cream or sorbet.

This is a nice pink-colored beer. Is it really beer? I'm not a fan of the sours but this one is a little better than OK. I would consider this more of a sour wine cooler. It has a nice berry aroma but just doesn't really please my taste buds.

74 | SEPTEMBER 2019

The debate over pizza making now spills over into brewing with Golden Road Brewing’s Pineapple Cart. Surprisingly, the pineapple isn’t that prominent. The sweetness of strawberry on the middle of the palate and the sour citrus of blood orange on the tip of the tongue somewhat mutes the tropical fruit. My verdict? If you don’t like it on your pizza, you won’t like it with your suds. But a decent, crisp wheat ale sits somewhere under the superfluous fruit.

A substantial white head tops this hazy beer after pouring it in a wheat beer glass. The smell contains a generous amount of fruit notes. Flavors of pineapple, strawberry, orange and banana hit the tongue, with carbonation staying in the finish. This beer could see a rise in popularity during late summer due to the low alcohol content. It might make an excellent addition to your favorite fruity baked goods like pineapple upside-down cake.

I enjoy the sweet pineapple flavor in this beer. Some beers are billed as pineapple-based but then it's more of an IPA. Not this one. It's very easy to drink and very refreshing on a hot day. It does have a little blood orange and strawberry to sweeten it up but they're not very prominent.

I love uniqueness and craftsmanship in a beer, and Gorch Fock definitely has both of those; then again, I’d expect no less from Indiana’s own 3 Floyds. This brew adheres to the adage of “Everything in moderation”: Sweet but not too sweet, strong but not overpowering, and with just enough hoppiness to remind you that this is, indeed, a beer. If you want a lighter beer that’s wellmade with actual flavor, you owe it to yourself to pick this up.

A decent white head crowns this beer when poured in a pilsner glass. Sweet malt notes control the scent with some bitter hops in the end. Likewise, after a burst of carbonation on the tongue, the malt flavors return with the initial tasting and stay in the finish. People who enjoy traditional lagers should drink this seasonal beer while it’s available. Pair it with Colby cheese or a lighter dessert like Mediterranean baklava.

This beer pours a pale gold with a white head but lacks on the carbonation. It's got a nice, crisp, slight lemon smell with a little yeast. The citrus hop is light up front, but the transition to the bread yeast finish is brisk and enjoyable. And it has a sweet hops flavor in the finish.

Oh man, this is a beer. It’s been a long time since I’ve had an Arrogant Bastard Ale (let alone one in a can), but I do remember how strong yet delicious it is. The trademark

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick tan head rests on this ale when poured in a tulip glass and never totally evaporates. Sweet notes of roasted malt dominate the scent profile. The roasted malt stays during the first sip of the beer, followed by alcohol,

with roasted malt in the long finish. While it’s good to drink fresh, you can also cellar it for more mature flavors. Pair it with roast beef or lamb, aged cheese or cannoli.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

I bought this beer a long time ago just on the name as a joke when I went to a party, but it's really good. It has a nice dark color and good carbonation. I can smell a little toasted rye. It has a nice caramel flavor with a hint of coffee. The hops are nice and sweet which makes it pretty easy to drink. It also has an ABV of 7.2% which can sneak up on you.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
