PARANORMAL ACTIVITY & MORE According to Wolter, the Indiana Ghost Trackers were called in about 20 years ago to conduct a study of the buildings and concluded without any hesitation that both the Olde Courthouse and House of Lecter have paranormal activity and ghost-like scenes. In addition, a clairvoyant came through and determined that there was a "cold spot" in the dirt-filled chambers of the Catacombs - which turned out to be right where prisoners were once brought under the street before being led up to the courthouse for their hearings. Wolter also notes that big, heavy doors have been seen springing open on their own and over the years, tenants have reported hearing and witnessing all sorts of mysterious things. AN UNSOLVED MURDER Back in 1973, a teacher at the old Lockyear Business College was walking home from work one evening and cut through the courthouse. Her body was discovered the next morning right inside where the exit stairs are located. She had been stabbed 22 times. To this day, the murder remains unsolved. DEATH ON HALLOWEEN While construction was taking place on one of the domes of the Olde Courthouse in 1890, two workers fell to their deaths when the scaffolding collapsed. Creepily, the tragic accident occurred on October 31 and the awful memory of that day still haunts the building every Halloween. Don't miss this rare opportunity to get out of the house and get scared silly! Check out the dates below to find the perfect evening to experience The New Abnormal!

CURE FOR THE COVID BLUES FEST ONLINE VIRTUAL CONCERT TO FEATURE 10 OF THE AREA'S BEST BLUES ARTISTS AND BANDS RIVER BASIN BLUES SOCIETY WEBSITE

|

OCTOBER 3

|

1-4 P.M.

Up until this year, the River Basin Blues Society (RBBS) made a habit of staging day-long concerts that routinely blew the roof off of local venues like Lamasco Bar & Grill and the Burdette Park Pavilion. But with the pandemic bringing live entertainment to a halt in the tri-state, the organization was forced to cancel its signature events in 2020, including the much-anticipated Blues Blast which normally takes place in the fall. Disappointing for sure, but this is the world we live in at the moment, unfortunately. Still, the RBBS was determined not to completely surrender to our current predicament and started tossing around the idea of a virtual blues festival - which would serve to continue its mission to act as a resource and a forum for tri-state blues fans, musicians and venues. In short, mission accomplished. On October 3 from 1-4 p.m., the Cure for the Covid Blues Fest featuring 10 of the area's best blues artists and bands will stream on the RBBS website (evansvilleblues.com). It's the next best thing to the real deal and a fantastic opportunity to catch sizzling live sets by your favorite tri-state performers - one after another. RJ RIGDON, GARY JINES & TRISTAN HOWARD

Talk about a talented trio. Rigdon absolutely rips on guitar whether he's going acoustic or electric; Jines is hands-down one of the finest harmonica players around; and Howard is an up and coming stand-up bassist. CHARLENE BLAY & THE 2ND EDITION

Known for her disarmingly smooth vocals, Blay is backed by an all-star cast of local musicians, including Roy Carter (sax), Micah "Honey Roy" Carter (keys), Jon Hyneman (bass) and Greg Franzman (drums, percussion). BEYOND BLU

Straight out of Owensboro, the dynamic Beyond Blu - led by Bob Fisher (aka Bobby Blu) and Cole Ethridge - mixes muscular originals with classic covers of their blues heroes. JONAS COWAN & LACY JEAN

One's a fiery guitar fiend, the other's a violin savant with sass. Together, Jonas Cowan and Lacy Jean make for a blues dream team with a gritty roadhouse vibe that truly comes alive on stage.

HONEY ROY

A tri-state treasure featuring the inimitable one-two musical punch of Micah "Honey Roy" Carter (piano, harp) and his father Roy Carter, Jr. (sax), Honey Roy is fleshed out by a who's who of local artists for this event, including Toby Ellis (guitars), Cory Folz (bass) and Danny Erkman (drums). 2 MILES BACK

Whipping up a musical cocktail of southern and classic rock with a dash of country and the blues, 2 Miles Back is fronted by powerhouse vocalist Robin Bolin with equally strong accompaniment by Darrell Bolin (bass), Lary Caddell (guitars) and Jim Perkins (drums). FABULOUS RODENBERG BOYS

Comprising local musicians of the highest order, including Carl Rodenberg (vocals, keys), Jon Rochner (bass, vocals), Danny Erkman (drums) and Erik Scales (sax, clarinet, organ), the Fabulous Rodenberg Boys play a variety of music, focusing on blues and jazz with a Bourbon Street flair. BG3

No band gets an audience up and out of their seats quite like BG3. This undeniably funky outfit featuring B Rich (sax, keys), Bertel Adams (guitars), James Johnson (bass), Greg Williams, Sr. (drums) and vocalist Valentina Gibbs mixes old school and new R&B with smooth jazz and more. THE COLD STARES

A blues-rock duo with monster riffs and hooks for days, the Cold Stares are the very definition of authentic. Chris Tapp (vocals, guitar) and Brian Mullins (drums) have conjured up the ghosts of blues legends and channeled that power into something uniquely contemporary. THE STILLWELL/FRANCE BLUES BAND

Legend meet apprentice. Former Beat Daddy Tommy Stillwell first mentored, then befriended, Boscoe France, one of the tri-state's most respected young blues guitarists. Now they've combined forces to produce the area's most fearsome band - the ultimate headliner for the Covid Blues Fest.

*The RBBS would like to thank the following local businesses for their continued support: Lamasco Bar & Grill / White Swan Coffee Lab / Bokeh Lounge / Pizza Factory / Rockport Printers / Harmonic Piano Service / Burdette Park / Evansville African American Museum / The Annex / Johnny Kincaid / Evansville, Indiana - 'e' is for everyone

PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA OCTOBER PERFORMANCES

THE 2020-2021 EPO SEASON CONTINUES WITH BOTH CLASSICS AND POPS SERIES CONCERTS ON TAP Live music is a rarity in the tri-state these days but for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, the show must go on, as they say. Truly, it's a joy to see musicians playing together again on a stage - even if there are safety protocols in place and limits on performance length. The many admirers of the EPO are just thrilled to see and hear the area's best orchestra in the flesh as there's no substitute for the real thing. This month's performances mark the return of new EPO Musical Director Roger Kalia who's lined up a fantastic program for both the Classics and Pops series concerts. His September debut was a smashing success and no doubt things will only get better from here. Take a look below at the details for Art in Music and Prohibition and be sure to get your tickets soon while they last!

Cole (Death of a Poet) and Arvo Part (Fratres for cello, strings & percussion). Musical Director Roger Kalia and the EPO will get a helping hand from renowned cellist Eric Byers, deemed "ideally eloquent" by the Los Angeles Times. A member of the world famous Calder Quartet, he brings years of experience to the stage and an unbridled enthusiasm that's sure to inspire the orchestra to new heights. Times: 10/17 (7 p.m.); 10/18 (2 p.m.)

still in the planning stages; however, we can report that it will feature the music of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael and more. And you simply can't go wrong with a lineup like that. Check the EPO's website for updates on Prohibition as the concert dates draw nearer.

coming in, the family hopes that a financial incentive will convince someone who knows something to come forward. While both the local police and FBI are involved in the case, Dawnita's family isn't waiting around for answers. They organized a search at the end of September in the surrounding areas, canvassing Evansville, Marion and Carbondale, assisted by a group of volunteers. Each area was broken down into quadrants and a sweep was done;

they also spoke to anyone that might have had a connection to Dawnita. It's all about keeping her name in the news and reminding people that she's still missing. As the family notes, if they stop looking then everyone else will stop looking, too. In searching for Dawnita, her family has discovered just how many people from this area are missing. It's been a real eyeopener and they've made a pledge to help others find their loved ones as soon as they bring Dawnita home. To that end, a meeting was recently set-up with Vanderburgh County Commissioner Ben Shoulders who declared September 15 "Find Dawnita Day" and drafted a proclamation to address and further missing persons awareness. Getting local government involved in such a way will hopefully bring more attention to the case and benefit the search efforts.

Dawnita's family meets with Vanderburgh Co. Commissioner Ben Shoulders

Dawnita's family is staying strong and continuing to put on a brave face throughout this ordeal but admittedly, it's very taxing. Life doesn't stop just because a loved one is missing so it's been a challenge to keep up with daily responsibilities while also devoting so much time to finding Dawnita. But they'll never give up - especially not when her children are suffering and struggling to make their way in this world without their mom.

If you have any information about the disappearance of Dawnita Wilkerson, please call the Evansville Police Tip Line at 812436-7979 or email finddawnitawilkerson@ gmail.com. Also, please consider donating to her GoFundMe page: gofundme.com/show-upfor-dawnita. Again, this is to help with the financial needs of her children.

CLEAN BITE LIFE Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure

There is nothing better than the smell of apples cooking in the

CROCKPOT STUFFED APPLES

crockpot on a brisk fall day. If you love apple pie but do not want the gluten guilt then this recipe is for you! When I first saw this

6 SERVINGS

recipe several years ago, the blogger suggested using trans-fat free margarine. Whatever you do, do not use margarine! Margarine is full of vegetable oil and emulsifiers. Butter is full of cream and salt. Which sounds better? Go buy the real deal butter. I highly recommend Kerry Gold. It will make all the difference!

For more recipes or meal ideas you can follow Lindsay Rasure on Instagram: @cleanbitelife or her Facebook group: Clean Bite Life

Ingredients: •

6 apples of choice (I used Organic Fuji’s)

2 T. softened butter

¼ c. coconut sugar

¼ c. walnuts or pecans (Recommend buying raw and toasting them first)

1 T. cinnamon

¼ c. water or 2 T. apple cider vinegar

Directions: 1.

In a bowl combine and mix butter, coconut sugar, nuts of choice, and cinnamon.

2.

Wash and core your six apples. Do not core all the way through so your filling stays in your apples. Keep the skin on your apples too. The skin helps keep the apples together plus it’s full of fiber.

3.

Fill your apples with the butter, sugar, nut, & cinnamon mixture. Place your apples in the crockpot and pour the water or apple cider vinegar around the apples at the bottom.

4.

The apples will cook in the crockpot on HIGH heat for 2.5-3 hours. Take them out when they are soft and begin to collapse.

5.

They are served best with a scoop of ice cream! We used So Delicious dairy free vanilla ice cream. Store the leftovers in a covered container in the fridge. They reheat well!

DR. RENDEVOUS They're an up and coming heavy rock band that was just getting started when Covid-19 hit. We're recording a 5 song EP together that should be really special. ANGEL RHODES We're recording a second EP together as a follow-up to Phoenix. She's got some really great new songs that are groovier and more R&B-based than the previous EP. Plus, Lucas Pate is coming in to play guitar and he's super talented. KYLE PAISLEY We're recording another solo project of his together. He's got a really good song ready that's as strong as "Kisses" which was a pop gem that had elements of Prince and Foster the People. HANNAH EVELYN TRIO I just finished mixing and signed off on revisions for their new recording. Hannah previously recorded an acoustic EP but we did a full band recording this time. Let me tell you that it's one of the most exciting records coming out of Evansville. She is unbelievably talented. Great songs, great execution. Kind of alternative rock - a bit like a singer-songwriter vibe but more rock with more grit. She's got a couple songs in particular that are just standouts. STRAIGHT LINE PRESS The lead singer was a rapper but now he's doing a rock thing that's really cool. Imagine a rapper who can sing really well but still has that rap flair. We just recorded two songs. It's reminiscent of Sevendust in terms of the vocals but not as heavy musically. For more info, follow Black Cat Recording on Facebook.

CLASSIC RESTAURANTS OF EVANSVILLE BY KRISTALYN SHEFVELAND

U S I P ROFE S S OR TA KE S A DELIC IO U S TO U R T HROU GH T HE C I T Y' S LO NG HISTO RY O F LOC A LLY- OWNE D ESTA B LISHM ENTS

It's no secret that businesses are struggling in every town during this unprecedented pandemic - particularly restaurants, many of which are run by locals who have put their heart and soul into becoming a treasured part of the community. Here in Evansville, this is especially true. The city's long culinary tradition of home-spun coffee shops, diners, hamburger stops, pizza joints, steakhouses and more serves as a reminder of just how much delicious history there is to explore - and how important it is to preserve the character of our surroundings, a character that's primarily been shaped by the influence of our mom and pop establishments. You could literally fill a book documenting all the amazing locally-owned eateries Evansville has been, and is, home to... And that's exactly what USI history professor Kristalyn Shefveland has done. From unearthing lost legends like Farmer's Daughter and F's Steakhouse to celebrating long-running hometown favorites such as House of Como and Turoni's, Classic Restaurants of Evansville takes a fascinating look into this city's unique culinary past and present. Every page offers fresh insight into the places that have defined our little corner of Indiana, ultimately making an air-tight case for the importance of supporting our beloved businesses throughout this incredibly challenging time. Was it a difficult project to take on considering Evansville's extensive culinary history?

It was absolutely a difficult process just because I would contact folks that I knew having been here 10 years now - I knew a lot of folks to reach out to. The biggest problem was getting people to go beyond, 'I really like their hashbrowns' - you know, there needed to be sources to be able to craft a story beyond, 'Yeah, that's really good food.' Especially for some of the pizza places. After awhile, it's the same story - cracker crust, gooey, served piping hot. So that was...not maddening - it's a good problem to have that everything's pretty reliable and really good. But finding more of the back story and the changing economics of an area or why some places

with Marisa Patwa HALLOWEEN HEROES, HAUNTED HOUSES AND WITCHING WIDOWS: NETFLIX OFFERS UP PLENTY OF CHILLING THRILLS IN OCTOBER

HUBIE HALLOWEEN (10/7)

Adam Sandler is getting his own Will Ferrell Elf moment with the lead role in the soon to be kids' holiday classic, Hubie Halloween. His character seems to have that same sweet innocence as Ferrell’s Buddy, only here Sandler plays a Salem, Massachusetts, local and Halloween enthusiast who discovers true evil is lurking in the town and bravely yet goofily attempts to stop it from murdering more people. This film is sure to be a riot with Modern Family’s Julie Bowen and SNL’s Tim Meadows and Keenan Thompson both adding some extra comedic relief. Even Shaq and Kevin James pop-up for a laugh or two. This one looks like a ghoulishly good time.

THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR (10/9)

The Haunting of Bly Manor is the highly-anticipated follow up to The Haunting of Hill House, which both horrified and captivated millions of viewers in 2018 as one of Netflix’s most watched shows. I’ll never forget a shot in the funeral home that panned through different rooms, focusing on the unique pain of each sibling as they prepared to lay their sister to rest, with ghosts quietly haunting them. It was a grotesquely beautiful masterpiece and I have no doubt the second iteration will be nothing short of bone-chilling, especially with knockout newcomer Victoria Pedretti returning. She was such a sensation in The Haunting of Hill House that she also landed a lead role in season two of the Netflix thriller series You that was very well-received. What a true Scream Queen.

REBECCA (10/21)

For those interested in a sinfully scary romance, be sure to check out Rebecca starring Lily James and Armie Hammer. James stars as a sweet yet naive young woman who falls for a mysterious, wealthy man played by Hammer, of course. And after spending a whirlwind vacation together and getting engaged, she moves to his grand estate, where she can’t seem to outrun the ghostly shadow of his late wife. This film has major Jane Eyre vibes. Now, while it might seem that the ex's demonic presence in the mansion is the enemy, I think Mrs. Danvers, played by the remarkable Kristin Scott Thomas, will be revealed as the true villain, with her cold-like demeanor giving me shivers just from her appearance in the trailer alone. This seems like an intellectual scare that will burn slow and I’m excited for the fire.

with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. Each month I'm offering up four bite-sized reviews, so read on and then listen in! Want more podcast recommendations? You can find long-form reviews, musings on happenings in the podcasting world, and links to podcasts I produce at my website: thepodreport.com or follow me on Twitter @ThePodReport.

WE HATE MOVIES (WEEKLY)

We Hate Movies has been a staple of the movie podcast scene for over a decade now, but what really makes this show stand out is how much it’s matured in that time. Some of the older episodes get blue to the point where the hosts poke fun at their own back catalog at times. I’d normally recommend WHM any time of year but October is a very special time for this podcast as they start the yearly Spooktacular. All four October episodes are about horror movies, usually horrible ones. If you’d like some pointers I just so happen to have a list of the top 6 Spooktacular episodes up on ThePodReport. com. whmpodcast.com

WE’RE ALIVE: A STORY OF SURVIVAL (COMPLETED)

Another oldie but a goodie to revisit during the Halloween season! I think we’re far enough from the zombie burnout that kicked in a few years ago to truly appreciate something made during the full swing of zombie fiction. We’re Alive: A Story of Survival is not only one of the seminal pieces of zombie survival audio fiction, it’s one of the oldest modern audio fictions full-stop. Like all good zombie stories, We’re Alive focuses more on its characters and the rich storytelling possibilities opened up by such a horrifying apocalypse (that’s thankfully not too close to world events to get Too Real). werealive.com

LAKESHORE & LIMBO (BIWEEKLY)

While not explicitly Halloween-y, Lakeshore & Limbo is a tabletop roleplay podcast that just naturally fits the vibe I’m going for around Halloween time. Starring a dapper gentleman who suspiciously looks like a movie star from the 1940's, a 125-year-old alchemist, and a woman who used to be a cat, L&L is about four folks who run an occult detective agency in Chicago. Things only get wackier from there. They’re out to solve mysteries and make a buck, not murder people (including going out of their way to save villains in peril). Batman’s got nothing on the fine folks of Melody Detective Agency.

arcadeaudio.net/lakeshoreandlimbo

IT CAME FROM THE PARKING LOT (MINISERIES)

With a very different Halloween on the horizon this year, I’m putting on a good old-fashioned audio fiction comedy miniseries starring good old-fashioned monsters dealing with a simple yet complex problem. Dracula, having retired to small-town life as his fame fades, throws a yearly Halloween party in a rented cabin in the city park. Everything goes smoothly until this year when a bear wanders into the parking lot and the monsters in attendance have to reconcile with the terrifying truth: none of them are capable of fighting a bear. This limited-run series debuts late October.

JOEY K: Speaking of farts... Come on, Katy, you're killing me here! TIMMY J: Air, I need air!

JUDY D: This isn't a joke, ok? These debates will likely determine the future of America. We should be paying close attention to what each candidate is proposing to do. JOEY K: I'm proposing that we crack a window. Seriously, Katy, what gives?!

KATY P: I can't help it. Every time I think about those two ancient windbags trading verbal blows on stage I get a bad case of indigestion. JIMMY G: But this is democracy at work. It's not patriotic to just tune out.

JUDY D: Right! So many people in the world are denied the opportunity to vote. To simply bail because you don't like either side is just selfish.

BOBBY B: Did someone say shellfish? Dang, that sounds good right about now. KATY P: Ugh, that's not helping my gut.

TIMMY J: MY gut tells me that we'll see a repeat of 2016. Biden will win the popular vote by millions but Trump will secure a second term by taking the electoral college. JUDY D: Hmmm, we really need to revisit the electoral college process and its overall fairness. In a democracy, shouldn't the person who receives the most votes win? Seems simple enough. BOBBY B: Hey, we can't have California deciding the outcome of our elections. All states need to have an equal voice.

JIMMY G: Last I heard, you were jonesing for seafood. Where's this sudden interest in the political process coming from?

TIMMY J: More urgently, where's that hideous odor coming from? Is that still you, Katy?!

KATY P: Maybe.

JUDY D: Maybe we all need to stop worrying about Katy's bowel issues and make a concerted effort to study the debate performances. The election is just around the corner, after all! JIMMY G: You know, it really could go either way. With the tight race and the wildcard of mail-in voting, who knows what will happen on November 3rd and beyond. BOBBY B: I'll tell you one thing that WON'T happen after November 3rd - any further discussion of the Coronavirus. It's all a bunch of political hogwash. TIMMY J: Hogwash? That's an old person's word. Have you been watching Lou Dobbs again?

FAKE NEWS FROM THE TRI-STATE by Johnny Fletcher

The latest and greatest stories that you surely missed

Division Street Sewer Smell To Be Bottled, Sold As Hip, New Cologne Drivers cruising down Division Street on Evansville's east side are routinely faced with an unpleasant odor wafting up from the bowels of the city. To most, it's terribly off-putting but one enterprising resident sees - and smells - things quite differently. "I can't believe no one has thought of doing this before," Jacob Underhill, a 62-year-old go-getter with an unsubstantiated online business degree remarks about his idea to market a hip, new cologne called Division Street Stench, swearing that - as once discussed on an episode of Seinfeld - revulsion has now become a valid form of attraction. "It's so obvious - we live in a time where all bets are off and older men, especially, are looking for ways to shake things up a bit," he explains, adding that it's more difficult than ever for age-challenged dudes to stand out from the crowd. "This way there's no middle ground - with Division Street Stench you'll never be ignored again. Everywhere you go people will take notice - the ladies, in particular." Underhill claims to have test-marketed an early version of the sewer-based cologne but adamantly refused to discuss the results, only offering that they were not, as one would rightly assume, poopy.

LUCY

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Like a lot of local animal lovers, Evansville's Katherine Tanner grew up with dogs around the house but just a couple years ago, her parents gifted her with a totally unique pet: a hedgehog. Safe to say that's not a common Christmas present; however, Tanner found the spiny mammal to be rather "cool" and it's been a welcome companion ever since - especially after she moved into an apartment and needed company. But even with the presence of the hedgehog she still felt lonely on occasion and decided it was time to adopt a furry friend. Dogs weren't allowed in Tanner's complex so she changed course and headed off to the River Kitty Cat CafĂŠ with her pal Kenzie in tow for support. "When we walked in, "Lucy" was the only cat just kind of laying over by herself," Tanner recalls. "So we just went and sat by her because there were open seats. She was just so sweet and just kind of climbed into my lap. And I was like, 'Oh, this is the one.'" After finalizing the adoption, Tanner loaded Lucy in the car and headed back to her apartment. The ride home was reportedly a rough one for the little 4-year-old furball and upon arriving home, Lucy ran and hid under the bed for awhile. Not an atypical reaction, of course, for a pet that's unfamiliar with their surroundings. But sure enough, after coaxing Lucy out from her hiding place with some food, things slowly improved as Tanner's new addition to the household became increasingly curious about her forever home - not to mention that strange little spiny animal hanging out in a cage (she's been seen sticking her paw inside with a questioning look on her face). According to Tanner, Lucy's personality has really started to shine over time; she's very vocal and absolutely loves belly rubs. No word yet on when she and the hedgehog will have their first face-to-face meeting out in the open but there's no rush to get the two together. Plenty of opportunity for that in the future.

SKI

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Henderson's Toni Calderaro grew up with family dogs and a turtle that she's had since the age of three (her very first pet). Now 23, she recently got into the "cat game" thanks to her boyfriend Sage who acquired a feline friend in college - and the couple added another furball to their home soon after. But then tragedy struck. While both cats were outside on an adventure, something terrible happened; one returned with severe injuries and the other simply disappeared. Calderaro was understandably heartbroken. "Cat personalities bring so much to a household, so when we lost both of them it was just empty," she says. "We have two dogs as well, but it was still so lonely without cats." At the time, the couple had just moved into a home in Henderson and once settled, they decided to make a trip to the River Kitty Cat Café in downtown Evansville - ostensibly just for fun but also with the possibility of adopting on the table. Sure enough, as soon as they entered, a cute, sleepy furball named Ski caught Sage's eye - but his slumbering state was short-lived. "Eventually, he woke up and was this crazy maniac sprinting from one side of the café to the other," Calderaro recalls with a laugh. "And anytime a toy came out he was immediately playing with it - none of the other cats could get a chance." And that's just the type of energetic personality the couple was looking for. With two young pups at home - a two-yearold Dalmatian and a one-year-old Black Lab - things are pretty hectic, so Ski was a perfect fit. According to Calderaro, Ski's transition to his forever home has gone pretty well, all things considered. He's still not 100% on board with the dogs - though Calderaro assumes that's simply because Ski isn't used to being around them. For now, he's got his own space in a guest bedroom that neither of the pups can access and when things quiet down at night, there's the opportunity to explore the rest of the house. "He's starting to come out of his shell," Calderaro notes happily. "By day two he was playing again - we bought some new toys and he's loving it."

THE PROS & THE CONS with Barold Hume

TRUMP vs. BIDEN: THE DEBATE I don't know why I'm even bothering to address this topic. But the first presidential debate is coming up (as I type this, it's 12 days away and will be history by the time you read this) and it's staring me right in the face. On a related note, my eyes are killing me. Hard to predict what will happen; I mean, has there ever been a stranger run-up to an election? Answer: never. Or how about this humdinger of a question - Who could ever have imagined two low-functioning geriatrics going headto-head (or, more accurately, deteriorating brain-to-deteriorating brain) for the right to steer the ship? The ship being America, in case I lost you there. You know the answer, of course. What's particularly amusing is that one of these fossils recently accused the other of taking performance-enhancing drugs to stay mentally afloat. How in the name of Kanye West did we get here? A nation of 325 million people and this is the only offering on the menu? Allow me to take a moment to note that there's absolutely nothing wrong with old people. Aging is a natural process that happens to all of us. But if you're going to run for the highest office, please be coherent. Sadly, neither of these senior citizens is playing with a full deck.

Back to the debate. I'm trying to imagine how this thing will play out. Will it come to fisticuffs? Obviously, no punches would land; they'd each throw their back out in the wind-up. Following up on that thread...I do hope that first responders will be on sight. This could be the first presidential debate that's won by the individual who makes it through without requiring medical assistance. Life Alert should cash in huge on this event; no doubt corporate headquarters is absolutely abuzz with financial projections. Hey, here's a truly thought-provoking question: What if Trump and Biden have a rational, linear and shockingly civil discourse on the state of the nation? Will anyone even know how to react? Pretty sure that it'd be like a scene out of a movie that I can't recall at the moment where something truly nutty happens and people are left with their mouths agape, unable to speak. I'll think of it shortly. In the meantime, let's just hope that the debate goes off without too many hitches and we all learn something substantive about each candidate in the process. Last question: You know I'm kidding, right?

It's only a rumor, isn't it?

tri-state

politics

with Bryan Fox

Whatever the case may be, it certainly got everyone's attention. Recently, the Onion reported that Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, is planning on moving to Evansville in hopes of becoming the city's next mayor. Yes. That Mayor Pete. The same Mayor Pete who became a serious contender for the Democratic nomination for president. The same Mayor Pete who won the Iowa caucus and finished second in the New Hampshire primary, getting three times more votes than Biden. That guy.

ANALYZING THE MAYOR PETE RUMOR

According to the Onion, taking over as Evansville's top executive would be like a promotion for Buttigieg since Evansville is more populated than South Bend. Buttigieg has yet to confirm or deny this report. As for the local GOP, they better hope there's not a shred of truth to it.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2020 | MUSIC REVIEWS

DUA LIPA/THE BLESSED MADONNA Club Future Nostalgia Warner Records

3.5/5 Dua Lipa has quickly established herself as a pop icon the last few years with explosive hits. Now that she’s got the success - including over 50 million Instagram followers - it seems she’s in the truly fun part of her career where she gets to be extra creative and worry less about climbing the charts and more about experimenting with other artists like American DJ The Blessed Madonna on this sick album. They blend genres beautifully together from UK Garage and pop-funk to trap and disco. Lipa is truly a flavorful artist; “Cool (Jayda G Remix)” is an electric sensation that makes you feel like you’re experiencing a passionate 80's teen romance. And the album is loaded with great club beats from “Love is a Religion” to “Break My Heart/ Cosmic Girl.” Lipa’s even caught the attention of industry legends like Gwen Stefani and Mark Ronson, who collaborate with her on the “Physical” remix, and Madonna and Missy Elliot, who she nabbed for “Levitating.” My personal favorite: “Kiss and Makeup” with Blackpink. It’s a perfect dance hit with the catchiest chorus. - Marisa Patwa

BIG SEAN Detroit 2 GOOD Music / Def Jam Recordings

3/5 Big Sean’s been through a lot with his album dropping just a month after his ex-fiancéNaya Rivera was found dead after a horrible drowning accident. But even through grief, he’s soldiered on to release music promised to fans, and he’s got some truly talented features on here with Royce de 5’9, Travis Scott, Lil Wayne, Post Malone, Young Thug, Diddy, and the late Nipsey Hussle. One of the dopest beats on this album is “Lithuania” featuring Travis Scott. It’s got the fire both musically and lyrically. I personally love the dichotomy of the intellectual yet silly verse: “I’m sensei and senseless, same time / Two drank, two cups poured up / I’m insanely down, slowed up (She built round, butt bubbled up)." “Wolves” with Post Malone is a brutally honest look at his rough life growing up: “Look, I'm the type to talk to the stars (I look up) / Straight up, these ain't tattoos these are scars.” And of course, Posty's signature moody croon just gives it that topping that just pops. My favorite: “Still I Rise” with Dom Kennedy, a poetic nod to the legendary Maya Angelou. This one hits just right. - Marisa Patwa

KATY PERRY Smile Capitol Records

4/5 Smile captures an emotionally intense period in Perry's life, from breaking up with now baby daddy Orlando Bloom to getting engaged to becoming pregnant. The new mom gifts us with an incredible array of music from the standout title track - a cheerful gift to the ears - to the catchy and classic “Never Really Over.” She is so talented she can’t help but write and sing straight-up hit singles. “Daisies” is a beautiful homage to her newborn daughter Daisy while “Only Love” is a gorgeously inspirational song with lyrics like, “Let me leave this world with the hate behind me and take the love instead.” “Champagne Problems” is a good dance beat with a fun 70's vibe while “Harley’s in Hawaii” is a sexy, more stripped-down song than what Perry normally delivers, but it’s a fun change of pace with a Technicolor music video in the tropical paradise. My favorite: “What Makes A Woman” - with that sultry country twang, it’s an addicting listen. - Marisa Patwa

THROWING MUSES Sun Racket Fire Records

4/5 It's been seven years since Kristin Hersh and company released the sprawling, 32-song Purgatory/Paradise, an album with an even longer gestation period - a decade to be exact - than the alt-rock trio's latest offering. But fans of this legendary band have not been wanting for new material. Hersh not only fronts TM but also commandeers the more punk-inspired 50 Foot Wave and continues to churn out (mostly) acoustic-leaning solo works at an impressive clip. Meaning there's been plenty of great music to dive into in the interim. Still, Throwing Muses remain the epicenter of Hersh's world - and for good reason. From the band's unhinged, career-defining 1986 self-titled debut to the more subdued, cerebral Purgatory/Paradise, each release stands as a testament to her stature as one of the genre's greatest songwriters. And Sun Racket only solidifies her vaunted position. Here, Hersh picks up where she left off with her excellent 2018 solo release, Possible Dust Clouds, a collection of fuzzed-out guitar workouts that gladly sacrificed overt hooks for a delightfully suffocating atmosphere. On Sun Racket, the band literally amps things up, building to a whirling fog of distortion on "Frosting," "St. Charles" and "Upstairs Dan" and gets downright heavy on opener "Dark Blue." But on occasion, sweetness prevails. "Bywater," "Milk at McDonald's" and "Sue's" showcase Hersh's underappreciated softer side - albeit always with a hint of melancholy or thinly-veiled sarcasm. She simply can't help herself. - Johnny Fletcher

Blues with Bragin ANGEL OLSEN Whole New Mess Jagjaguwar

3.5/5 Last year, indie singer-songwriter Angel Olsen released her fourth album, All Mirrors, a stunning pop masterpiece filled with lush production and over-the-top string arrangements. With its announcement came the news that it was the second recorded version of the album. Olsen had originally recorded the songs featuring only vocals and guitar, a simpler approach which now sees the light of day a year later as Whole New Mess. Make no mistake, it's a really great listen, and some of these tracks are better than their over-produced alternatives, but the album does feel like you are listening to demo versions or bonus content for an already great album. Thankfully, Whole New Mess includes two new songs - “Waving, Smiling” and “Whole New Mess” - that rank up there with her best, making this album a vital listen for Olsen fans. - Russ Finn

PERFUME GENIUS Set My Heart On Fire Immediately Matador Records

4.5/5 Most of the time, I hate pop music. I really dislike the idea of making music for commercial reasons to appeal to the lowest common denominator in an attempt to make money. I do, however, love pop music as a genre when I believe the artist has merit and a vision. With that criteria in mind, I think Seattle singer-songwriter Michael Hadreas is one of the best pop artists of the last decade. Since 2010, Hadreas has released five albums under the moniker Perfume Genius, each one great and each one better than the last. His latest, Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, if not his opus, at the very least cements his place among pop greats like Prince or The Beatles. Check out “Jason” and “On The Floor” to see what I mean. - Russ Finn

SIGHTLESS PIT Grave of a Dog Thrill Jockey

3/5 Sightless Pit is a collaborative project featuring members of The Body, Lingua Ignota and Full of Hell. If you are familiar with the work of those three acts, you can expect that Grave of a Dog will be an appropriately dark, noisy experience. As Sightless Pit, the three metal artists create an impressive gothic dance party. Made with no guitars, the album sounds absolutely maxed out with its drone soundscapes, bass and tom-heavy drumming, glitchy samples, guttural screams and operatic howls. Grave of a Dog is an ambitious project by three artists who have all created great work, but the album suffers a little bit from being a tad bloated and, at times, simply boring. Absolutely check out Sightless Pit if you are a fan of the three bands that comprise this supergroup, but know Grave of a Dog doesn’t compare to the best work of any respective band member. - Russ Finn

BLIND FICTION Overlook Howl Street Recordings Milwaukee's Blind Fiction fire up some serious electric blues on Overlook. Opening track “Better Man” offers a funky beat along with Tim Wright’s rocking guitar. Eric Schoor’s tenor sax also adds a nice touch to the song. “Old News” features a blistering guitar solo from Wright that showcases his prowess. Eric Madunic’s eerie bass guitar at the beginning of “Deal With You Later” turns into a funky jam in the middle of the song, building to a crescendo at the end. “Ignorance Is Bliss” allows Nick Lang’s tight drumming to burst forth. The double guitars at the beginning of “Mean Old Jack” offer a deep insight into Wright’s virtuosity. “Ugly Side” starts as a slow ballad before turning into a rocking number with heavy guitar and lyrics about seeing part of a person that should remain hidden. Trumpet from Jamie Breiwick and Schoor’s sax on “Better Than New” give the song a nice lift. The slow ballad “Waiting on a Tragedy” boasts great music that works well with the melancholy lyrics. Anyone interested in blues or jam bands will want to check Overlook out. For more info, visit blindfiction.com. - Paul Bragin

MICK KOLASSA The Blind Lemon Sessions Endless Blues Records Also known as "Michissippi Mick," Mick Kolassa returns with The Blind Lemon Sessions which opens with a cover of Lonnie Johnson’s “Jelly Roll Baker," a song about the joy of good pastry. The harmonica from Eric Hughes is very well done. Kolassa’s sorrowful guitar and vocals on “Text Me Baby” fit well with the lyrics about waiting for a lover to contact you. Alice Hansen’s violin adds a nice country/bluegrass touch to the song. The up-tempo “Keep On Truckin’” features more great violin from Hansen. “I Want to Be Seduced” discusses wanting a woman with a sense of humor and not a one-night stand. Kolassa sings about his ability to satisfy women on “Mr. Right.” The combination of his guitar and Hughes’ harmonica works very well together. The haunting guitar on “Bad Things” perfectly fits with the title. “Cake Walk Into Town” promotes optimism and enjoying good things after going through a rough period. Hansen’s superb violin on the classic “St. James Infirmary” gives the song a great sound not heard in other versions. The brief song “The Space Between Us” discusses a relationship that didn’t last and how to prevent it. For more info, visit mimsmick.com. - Paul Bragin

OCTOBER BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. RHINEGEIST CLOUD HARVEST 03

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

There has been a recent movement by IPA purists to classify the New England Hazy IPAs differently, as they tend to be much more fruit-forward, rather than centering on the traditional hop bitterness. Cloud Harvest 03, however, is a hazy IPA that easily fits in the IPA classification. With a cloudy straw color as its name suggests, it has strong aromas of citrus on the nose, but only retains a hint of juiciness (grapefruit) on the palate. The finish is a very well balanced, with a pronounced hop bitterness. Coming in at 6.5% ABV, this is sure to please the IPA lover, especially one who likes a bitter finish.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

URBAN SELTZER PASSION FRUIT

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

Like most seltzers, this pours almost completely clear, and contains high carbonation. It comes in at 4 % ABV and only 90 Calories (and it’s gluten free). There are strong tropical notes on the nose, it's very light on the palate, and leaves a slight mineral essence on the back of the tongue, similar to any seltzer water. There are only subtle hints of its Citra hops, with no hop bitterness. If you're looking for a refreshing, low calorie alternative to beer, this one deserves your attention.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A thick white head rests on this IPA and stays for a long time. A burst of citrus fruit from the hops fills the nose. Carbonation hits the tongue, with sour citrus notes following and becoming sweeter in the finish. Pair it with your favorite spicy dishes like green Thai curry with jasmine rice or pineapple. It could also work well as an ingredient in a recipe for pineapple upside-down cake.

A thick head forms but evaporates very quickly. The scent contains a good amount of passion fruit. Some sweetness hits the tongue with the first sip, followed by passion fruit in the finish. Enjoy it as a thirst quencher during the remaining hot days of the year. Pair it with prosciutto and melon, add vodka or gin for a fun twist or include it in your favorite fruity dessert recipe for an extra kick.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a cloudy yellow beer and I notice that it's unfiltered - which is something that I've always enjoyed. I believe unfiltered beers have more character. It has a light hops flavor with a twist of grapefruit and a little lemon. The can says it has some tangerine but I don't taste it. It does have a 6.5% ABV but it seems most IPAs are higher in that regard.

I don’t consider this a beer but rather a Zima type beverage. It has a light passion fruit flavor but I don’t consume many passion fruits. It's glutenfree so if that is an issue, this beverage is for you. It only has a 4% ABV and just 90 calories. I'm not much of a fan of the seltzers but I guess Urban Chestnut had to throw their hat in the ring.

3 FLOYDS LAZERSNAKE IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

Lazer Snake is a Hazy IPA from Three Floyds, though not with your typical fruit-forward notes of a New England IPA. A vigorous pour will produce a nice, thick head. It has notes of orange and mango on the nose and finishes with a typical IPA bitterness. IPA purists will appreciate this offering from Three Floyds, though one is hard pressed to find an IPA from them that isn’t good.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick white head crowns this India Pale Ale (or Indiana Pale Ale as the brewer calls it) and dissolves very slowly. A generous helping of citrus comes to the nose first, followed by pine scents. The hop presence builds slowly on the tongue with the initial tasting. Hopheads will really like this. Pair it with a variety of cheeses, fish, salads with citrus dressing, citrus dishes, or something unique like watermelon gazpacho.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This beer pours a hazy golden color with decent carbonation. It has a lot of sweet malt that really does remind me of a cream ale but also has tart citrus and some spices. I'm also a fan of the 7% ABV. I really like this beer - it's flavorful and very easy to drink with just enough spicy hops at the finish but not too much. Plus the artwork on the can is pretty neat.

TERRAPIN HOPSECUTIONER IPA

notes of melon on the palate. It has a nice malty backbone, producing hints of caramel sweetness on the nose, as well as a lingering bitterness on the finish, as one might expect from a beer called Hopsecutioner. A solid offering from Terrapin.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25 PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

This IPA pours a clear, light amber color, and produces a thin head. Six different hop varieties provide a well rounded hop profile, leaving

A thick white head tops this copper IPA and never totally disappears. A light hop scent comes to the nose. The initial tasting starts with some fruit notes from the hops, followed by flavors of pine and a balance of malt in the finish. People who enjoy IPAs should try this. Pair it with cheese like blue

or sharp Cheddar, hamburgers, a light dish like shellfish or something citrusy like glazed orange duck.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This beer pours a clear amber. I notice it has six different hops but I'm unsure if that is a good or bad thing. I'm not that much of a connoisseur of the different types but the flavor is not overbearing. It's almost light when compared with other IPAs. It does have a 7.3% ABV but that seems deceiving. Props for the great artwork on the can.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Q: If I'm injured in a wreck do I contact a lawyer automatically or is it only if my injuries are bad? A: Best practice is to contact an attorney after a collision causing injuries even if you don’t believe you are seriously injured. Indeed, an attorney can be very helpful in advising you of your rights, the various aspects of the insurance coverages involved, how to properly process property damages claims and medical bills and how to deal with your employer for time off. Preserving evidence is very important as well and an attorney knows how to preserve evidence, such as witness statements, black box data, physical evidence, photographs of the scene, the vehicles and injuries. Moreover, it is difficult for you to know if you are seriously injured or not. For example, sometimes, an individual will have pain from a collision that the individual believes is normal following a collision and the individual thinks the pain will resolve in a short amount of time. Certainly, it is common to have some soreness after a collision from a muscle strain and the soreness can resolve in weeks. However, sometimes this pain from a muscles strain lingers and does not resolve quickly or the pain could even been an indication of a structural injury (i.e., disc involvement) that could require more invasive treatment, such as surgical intervention. So, at least consulting with an attorney following a collision is a good idea. A: Divorce often involves heightened emotions, but that

does not have to result in high legal fees. There are a few things that you can do to keep costs down during a divorce.

1

Find Areas of Agreement: Contrary to what most people believe, most divorces are settled

outside of the courtroom. A good attorney can

save you time and money by negotiating and drafting an agreement with your soon to be ex-spouse on issues such as child custody, parenting time, and separation of property. It is relatively common for a divorce to cost under $2500 when the parties agree on most issues.
