IS THERE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL?

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke looks back on a challenging 2020 and charts the path ahead in the New Year

It's a broken record by now, but 2020 was an unusually difficult year. Times were tough for most everyone as the impact of Covid-19 reached all corners of the country, resulting in lost lives, shuttered businesses and disrupted learning in the classrooms - not to mention a mounting distrust of the nation's leaders on both sides. Mercifully, the New Year is upon us - and with it, comes a glimmer of hope; vaccines for the virus are rolling out, providing a sense that there's light at the end of the tunnel, after all. But it's going to be a slog, regardless. Infection rates are currently skyrocketing all across the U.S. as the death toll climbs ever higher and communities grapple with how to address the growing fatigue and fallout from the pandemic. While Evansville has hardly been immune to the ramifications of Covid-19, we've been fortunate not to suffer quite as much as other metropolitan areas in Indiana - and especially not to the degree of New York City or Los Angeles. Still, it's a daily battle to maintain sanity when life as we know it has been upended. And no one knows that better than Mayor Lloyd Winnecke who's been right in the thick of it from day one, navigating this unprecedented period in the city's history with both a calm, reassuring demeanor and a determined approach, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols to slow the spread of the virus and ultimately get Evansville back on track. We caught up with Mayor Winnecke to get his take on the impact of the past 10 months and where he sees the community heading in 2021.

You've certainly faced many challenges during your time as mayor but nothing could have prepared you for dealing with a pandemic. What was it like to be on the frontlines in 2020?

At the beginning of the pandemic, it almost seemed like we were in a little cocoon here in the big toe of Indiana - the infection rate was low, comparatively speaking. Did it seem serious to you, initially?

on, was the ever-changing complexion of the situation.

the beginning, were relatively low - for weeks and weeks

What we were doing in this office was not only helping to

I'd get calls from other parts of the state [asking] 'hey, what

you feel like you're in a big city but we've been doing this

are you guys doing down there?' Well, we're doing what

long enough now that we have a really strong relationship

the healthcare experts say. And then over time, I think

with our healthcare partners, with the health department,

two things have happened. One, the virus has spread at

with our educational partners - so it was really a matter

a rate much greater than in the spring; I think that's pretty

of just making sure everyone knows what their decision

means for everyone else and I will say this: I've never been

of just throwing up our hands and saying, 'ok, we're done,

One of the most difficult aspects of this, especially early

How did the situation affect you personally? Were there sleepless nights?

Absolutely. I think one of my strengths as mayor over the last nine years has been to compartmentalize and not worry about things until it's time to worry about things. This made that difficult to do; it was tough to go home at night and shut it off. One, because it was changing so quickly; there were emails, text messages, phone calls -

You know, it did. Because even though the numbers, in

we're going back to normal.' We've got a little bit longer to manage through. And people understand that; people are making the best decisions they can. You know, it's a challenging time for everyone - we're all making sacrifices.

Obviously, unemployment has been a huge side effect of the pandemic. How does Evansville stack up compared to other cities?

We're doing better than most - I just don't have that

So, it was really difficult to shut it off. There was no, 'hey,

rescue. And it really started in the spring when schools closed because all of a sudden we had thousands of kids who relied on breakfast and lunch at school and didn't have food. So that's how Feed Evansville was born. There have been some silver linings to this very large cloud.

The food security issue is one that definitely gets overlooked with so much focus on the economy.

What we found was that food security was a major component of any reopening that we had to help manage. So we put a lot of resources into that as a community. The city's been at the table with Lisa Vaughan and Alex Burton and many others. They get volunteers and get food from the federal government and various sources. They're going to town.

Is that what you see when you're out and about in the community during these difficult days - people coming together in a time of need? Here's what I see - a community that realizes that we're not out of it yet, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel. I sense a community and see a community that comes together to help each other and to help other organizations that need it. I see a community that understands that individually and organizationally we need to make sacrifices because we're not out of the woods. The personal sacrifice that [my wife] Carol and I are making - and it pales in comparison to the sacrifices of others - but we're not going to go see our grandchildren this year at Christmas. We've been going to see our two grandsons since they were born. We can't do that. Again, that's hard personally but in the grand scheme of things we need a bunch of people to make those sacrifices in order not to overload our healthcare system in this final stretch - you know, what we hope will be these last few months of the pandemic.

Has it been difficult to keep city projects up and running?

We've had to be creative in how we've done it but you'll notice that progress continues on the Deaconess Aquatic Center across from Bosse Field. And work continues at the zoo on the penguin exhibit. Both of those projects will be done in the July/August time frame of 2021. And I think that's good because when the pandemic's "over" - whatever that means - people are going to want to bust out and have some fun. And whether that means going to the zoo or going to swim, we've got to have these things. We've tried to work on parallel paths during the entire pandemic - not bring city government and its projects to a halt but understand that we have some new limitations but also keep the economy going and protect public health.

Ultimately, how do you see things playing out in 2021? Is there reason for optimism? After all, the country as a whole is currently experiencing another surge in infections and the death toll continues to rise.

You know, there's a lot of reason for optimism in all this. And you're right, it's not all peaches and cream, because the numbers are high and we track the numbers every day. I'm on a call four nights a week with the hospitals and the health department and schools, so I hear... I can tell you exactly how many people were in the hospital last night with Covid. Fortunately, the hospitals still have capacity, so I think that's a positive. And I think the other positive thing is - and we haven't talked about the vaccine yet - by the time this is published there will be people that have had the first dose of the vaccine. And I think that's incredibly optimistic. We'll see a lot of people come out that say, 'the vaccine's good - you gotta get vaccinated.' And there will be people who are opposed to it and like everything else during the pandemic, we'll certainly respect other points of view, but we'll also certainly use the bully pulpit of the mayor's office to encourage people to get a vaccine.

A DANCE WITH DEATH

MURDER MYSTERY DINNER FLASHBACK TO THE 50'S FOR A PROM NIGHT WHODUNIT PAIRED WITH A DELICIOUS DINNER

OWENSBORO CONVENTION CENTER / JANUARY 22 / 6 P.M.

Itching to get out of the house during these lonely days of the ongoing pandemic? Here's a great opportunity to enjoy a truly entertaining evening while still observing safety protocols. Last September, the OCC held a similar event that was a great success all the way around - so much so that organizers immediately started planning another one for the New Year. And this follow-up Murder Mystery Dinner promises to be just as much fun with a cuisine to die for, so to speak. So get ready to flashback to the 50's - to the early days of rock & roll, poodle skirts and pompadours. A Dance with Death features a promnight-gone-awry storyline that ends in murder. And it's up to you to solve this old school whodunit. Or as the organizers note, you've got to "get this sock hop back on track." And please dress the part if possible. Ladies are encouraged to wear poodle skirts, of course, with bows and pins in your hair. Guys, dig that white or black suit out of the closet or go the Fonzie route with jeans and a black leather jacket. Guests will enjoy a 50's themed dinner - including lots of delicious comfort food - as well as cocktails before the meal.

Tickets are $69 per person or two for $120 and may be purchased online at OwensboroTickets.com, at the OCC Box Office or charge by phone at 270-297-9932.

For more info, visit owensborocenter.com.

The OCC is located at 501 W. 2nd St. in Owensboro, KY

that dark chocolate. I want it to be dairy free and refined sugar free too. I think this recipe is perfect! The brand of oat milk matters along with using Dutch cocoa vs. unsweetened cocoa. I tried a few different oat milk brands, but the two I listed in the ingredient list make it the creamiest. Dutch cocoa gives it the deep chocolate flavor that is similar to Starbucks hot chocolate. If you want a dairy free whip cream that’s already made Reddi Wip now makes Coconut milk and Almond milk whip cream. It does have a few ingredients that aren’t as clean as making your own, but it’s a great alternative! For more recipes or meal ideas you can follow Lindsay Rasure on Instagram: @cleanbitelife or her Facebook group: Clean Bite Life

INGREDIENTS FOR HOT CHOCOLATE: •

1 c. oat milk (Califia Farms Barista Blend or Oatly Barista Edition)

1 T. Dutch cocoa (Ghirardelli brand is the best in my opinion)

1 tsp. real maple syrup

1 can of full fat coconut milk (sit in fridge for 24 hours)

vanilla

ahead and add a small amount of water to another saucepan and get the water boiling. 3.

In a small glass bowl combine the Dutch cocoa and maple syrup. Once your water is boiling add about ½-1 tsp. of boiling water. Mix everything together until it turns into a paste.

4.

Add the chocolate paste to your oat milk and start whisking until everything is combined.

5.

Once it’s at the temperature of your liking it’s ready to pour into a mug! It’s best topped with coconut whip cream and dark chocolate shavings.

DIRECTIONS FOR COCONUT WHIPPED CREAM: 1.

Place a small mixing bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes.

2.

After bowl has sat in freezer, open the can of coconut milk and scoop out just the top fat portion. (You can save the coconut water for smoothies!)

3.

Whip the coconut fat for about 30 seconds. Add in a splash of vanilla and about 1 tsp. of maple syrup (give or take depending on how sweet you want it.) Continue whipping until it is all combined.

4.

Whipped coconut cream will last for several days stored in a covered container in the fridge.

JOSH MERRITT Tri-state country favorite releases debut studio album, pins hopes on February acoustic tour There's no sugarcoating it, Owensboro's Josh Merritt had some rough years growing up with a drug-addicted mother and other family struggles; as a result, he spent much of his time in the care of his great aunt and uncle - surrogate grandparents, effectively - in a tiny two-bedroom trailer that sits on 70 acres of farmland. Known as Reynolds Station, it remains a sort of home base for Merritt - a quiet spot where he can detach from the pressures of life and regroup. And yet, the tranquil vibe can never fully erase the memories of his troubled childhood, a realization that drove the popular tri-state country singer to document his thoughts and feelings about the past on a heartfelt concept album three years in the making. Released in late November of 2020, Reynolds Station serves as both therapy for Merritt and as a way to comfort "people I know that grew up the same way." A featured performer at all the biggest area bars, events and festivals for quite some time now, Merritt quietly began recording his debut studio effort in Nashville in 2017 with producer Shannon Lawson, a former MCA artist with a virtual rolodex of well-known musicians at the ready to help achieve just the right sonic feel and atmosphere for each track. The who's who list of contributors included drummer Shakey Fowls (Kid Rock), bassist Robert Kerns (Sheryl Crow) and keyboardist Peter Keys (Lynyrd Skynyrd), among other top-notch folks. The icing on the cake? Reynolds Station was engineered and mixed by Zach Kasik, a sought-after talent who's interned under Dr. Dre and boasts a letter of recommendation from none other than Paul McCartney. "I don't know how I got to sit in the same room with him," Merritt wonders.

Of course, corralling such an impressive lineup to bring his concept to life wasn't cheap; recording - which was completed in November of 2019 - happened in periodic bursts to allow Merritt time to save up for the next session. But the stunning results speak for themselves. Conceived as a more somber, stripped-down collection of songs (the polar opposite of today's bro-country phenomenon) to accentuate the lyrics depicting the harrowing impact of drug addiction, Reynolds Station is replete with standout true-to-life accounts such as "The High," "Honest as a Song," "How Many Times," "Run" and "Not a Life to Save" - all culled from Merritt's difficult upbringing and achingly delivered with the singer's signature rich baritone. Then there's lead single "Live with That" - a horn-driven bopper seemingly at odds with the album's dark tone. "Shannon thought we needed something a little more upbeat," Merritt explains. "He said the only part of the concept that I didn't have was how this whole thing got started with my mom. She's been sober for almost 15 years - a totally different person now. I talked with her about the album and her response was that when she first started doing all the drugs, it wasn't all dark - she was totally partying and having a great time. So tell the truth, that's what music's supposed to be." The pandemic inevitably scuttled Merritt's plans to release the album and a video for "Live with That" in early 2020, but eventually the project got back underway and since its release, Reynolds Station has received much acclaim, even earning a write-up in his life-long favorite magazine. "One of the highlights was getting recognized in American Songwriter which is one of the nation's biggest music outlets," Merritt remarks. "I've read it since I was a kid, so it was pretty crazy." Next up? Merritt hopes to hit the road for an acoustic tour of the south in February and finally get the opportunity to start promoting the new album. "I'm ready to spread the word."

K. SETZ Founder of Dirty Dogg Productions, an Evansville-based company that provides sound for area shows and has recorded a number of local hip-hop artists, Karl Setzekorn is also a superb musician and songwriter who recently released the excellent single "Twelve" as a lead-up to the impending Mother Machine EP - a groovy, psychedelic, jam band-meets-Santana musical journey. It's all those things and more, really. In some ways, it functions as a companion piece to 2019's Frequency, a similarly out-there collection of (primarily) spacey instrumentals, but this time around, Setzekorn enlisted the help of Jacob Hall, a talented young piano player from Alabama, to build the foundations of the songs. The two met by chance at Dirty Dogg HQ and quickly bonded on a creative level. Sadly, Hall, at just 23-years-old, passed away last August. But his unparalleled musicianship left an indelible mark on the recording of Mother Machine. "I was making hip-hop beats downstairs [at Dirty Dogg] and I heard somebody playing piano up on the top of the stairs - on a piano that never gets touched, ever," Setzekorn recalls regarding his introduction to the talents of Hall. "I heard jangling, honky-tonk keys and thought, 'Holy Christ, what is that?' I was like, 'dude, you've got to track on some of this stuff [I'm working on].'" After a shared beer or two,

the pair got down to business with Hall - who was in town with a touring country band - playing five to six minutes of keys over each of Setzekorn's loops - entirely off-thecuff but totally inspired. Excited to incorporate Hall's 70's soul-esque improvisations into the Mother Machine project, Setzekorn spent the following month chopping up, layering and sampling everything. It was clear that he had the basis of the EP. The next step was to mesh his and Hall's musical styles together - a process that resulted in a truly rewarding collaboration that Setzekorn now views as a "tribute" to the beloved southerner. In addition to Hall's contributions, what makes Mother Machine such an interesting prospect is how Setzekorn - who, it should be noted, records under the K. Setz moniker for the sake of simplicity - pays homage to his days growing up in the local punk scene as well as his penchant for a big guitar sound. "I try to put those elements in because you don't get that in the jam band scene," he says. "The newer wave of jam bands is more dancey, more disco - it's lacking balls." So what you often get here is a mix of tribal percussion and psychedelic swirls that suddenly kick into nasty waves of distortion complete with abrupt shifts in tempo. "Twelve," however, is more groove-oriented with some eastern flute passages that play nicely off Hall's Rhodes piano vibe. It's totally chill at first but when Setzekorn comes in with the Santana-like lead guitar lines, the whole piece ascends to the heavens. Setzekorn had hoped to get Mother Machine out in 2020, but life got in the way as it often does. Now he's back on track and pushing to release the EP this month. He's also looking to tour whenever it's safe to do so - ideally, a Midwest run of the jam band scene, down to Florida and back.

IDDER With recording sessions interrupted by the pandemic, Evansville's grunge leaders look to get back to business in the New Year

unloved, his grungy, southern-fried tunes were appealingly heavy and catchy and peppered with a lyrical and vocal quirkiness reminiscent of Primus' Les Claypool. The musical vision was clear; Roberts just needed the right vehicle to see it through. And then it happened. "One day I was hanging out with Ron in front of the Jam Room building, and he said, 'Let's jam - I don't want to see your songs die,'" Roberts recalls. "So we decided to go straight from scratch and start writing. We basically took some of the stuff from Star Pupil that the others didn't want to play and turned them into Idder songs." It was Latham that suggested the

Bethel was unavailable, but Latham volunteered to split time between two bands. That just left a familiar void. A member of death metal band Blood Tribe since 2003, Clay Evans just happens to have a familial connection to Roberts. "Adam is married to my cousin and we would see each other at family functions," he explains. "And we both love the occult - we've even done rituals together." A phenomenal drummer, Evans had previously jammed with Roberts but reportedly, the timing was never quite right for a serious commitment - that is, until he got a call regarding the proposed reformation of Idder. Always a fan - and finally freed up to do some damage behind the kit - he was all in. "I love heavy metal, but I also love the stuff that I grew up on in the 90's - grunge and alternative rock," he says. "Idder kind of fills that void for me." Back to a three-piece once again, the guys got back to work, playing more shows and writing more songs. All was good, but when the Jangle Sheep fizzled out at the beginning of 2020, Roberts approached Bethel about rejoining - this time as a second guitarist - to beef-up the sound. "It was a perfect time for me to jump back into Idder," Bethel explains. "One thing I didn't want to do was start another band - it takes so long to get going." Best of all, he basically knew all the songs and understood how to play off of Roberts' unique strumming patterns. Now a formidable quartet, Idder began recording soon after, completing close to 2/3 of an album before getting stymied by the pandemic. The hope is to pick things back

FLESHHOLE Group of Bosse High School grads captures the black mood of the country with Momo Chug, a punk/ thrash crossover masterpiece Somehow it seems appropriate that nearly all members of Fleshhole, one of Evansville's finest punk/thrash bands, work retail; after all, customer service is not for the faint of heart - especially during these troubling times. It's enough to do anyone's head in, but in the case of frontman Bryson Pace, that daily stress can serve as a creative spark - albeit one that inspires dark and sometimes disturbing lyrics reflecting the overall black mood of the country. "It's just pure anxiety, depression and hate," he states matter-of-factly. His fellow bandmates - Deryck Hardin (lead guitar), Nate Dorris (rhythm guitar), Cameron Wolf (bass) and Mason Bradley (drums) - are all on the same page, but recognize that while Momo Chug, their unrelentingly bleak yet incredibly powerful debut studio album, serves as a mirror to society circa 2020 ("I've never faced a more difficult year in my entire life," Bradley notes), the follow-up must offer at least a hint of hope. But there's plenty of time for optimism later. Right now, the group of Bosse High School grads - all just 20 or 21-years-old - is taking in the quantum leap made from the disappointing quality of 2019's über raw Eat Your Teacher EP to the professionally-recorded masterpiece that is Momo Chug. The five days the band spent in Dayton, Ohio, last October at Refraze Recording Studios

32 | JANUARY 2021

proved to be an illuminating and rewarding experience all around. For starters, Pace could actually hear his vocals above the din of the music - and it turns out his voice is perfectly-suited for Fleshhole's punk/thrash approach, able to both talk/sing in rapid fashion and summon utterly convincing rage as heard on such heartpounding tracks as "Government Orgy/Ambulance Taxi" (addressing political hypocrisy), "No Ride Home" (detailing the horrors of a kidnapping victim), "Post Mortem" (documenting a sadistic killer) and "Scream" (tackling police brutality). The brilliant title track, which

NEWS4U JANUARY 2021 | MUSIC

proves just how musically-gifted these young guns are, plays like a dream collaboration between Minor Threat and Megadeth. It's fast, it's furious and unexpectedly catchy. In fact, despite the heavy subject matter, every track, however brief, has hooks to spare. While the punk elements of the band come from the various influences of various members, the "chug" - or thrash side - is most often provided by Dorris, an avowed metal fan. "I try to bring that in because in high school I started to get into that stuff," he explains. "I always try to bring a lower [guitar] tone - to blur the lines into crossover territory. I like doing those songs." This marriage of genres makes for a highly-charged, galvanizing sound that's just begging for live performance - if and when that's possible. On the other hand, considering the strength of the recording, Bradley's not so sure about reproducing Momo Chug on stage. "I'm worried about living up to the album," he half-jokes. Still, Fleshhole are eager to expand on their live resume; previous shows include gigs at PG Café, Wired Venue Coffee Shop and TJ's Stockyard Inn in Evansville, plus regional performances in Naperville and Nashville. And big picture-wise, they're even considering a move to Colorado at some point to be part of a bigger music scene. Then there's the small matter of the more hopeful followup. Not only is the band in the process of writing the sophomore effort, Bradley is busy conceptualizing the third full-length while acknowledging that "Momo Chug is the album that made us who we are." Fingers crossed that Fleshhole stick around long enough to enjoy the fruits of their labor of love (or hate, more accurately).

For more info, follow Fleshhole on Facebook. Momo Chug is available on Bandcamp and other streaming platforms.

It was the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her rock & roll journey which landed in Nashville circa the late 80's. The move to Music City proved fortuitous. Next thing Reed knew she was getting calls from up and coming bands such as Smashing Pumpkins, Primus and Pantera - all eager to take advantage of her booking skills as they toured their way across Middle America. DRIVING THE GREEN BOOK (WEEKLY)

Hosts Alvin Hall and Janée Woods Weber take a drive from Detroit to New Orleans, using the trip to collect firsthand accounts from black Americans old enough to have personal experience using Victor Hugo Green’s 1936 travel guide The Negro Motorist Green Book. Effectively a counter-argument to the fluff Oscar-winning film of a similar name, Hall and Weber aim to bring into sharp focus the realities of the systemic racism of a country that would require a guide to safely travel without fear of horrific treatment if not physical danger. Available on most podcatchers

MY YEAR IN MENSA (COMPLETE)

A masterclass in succinct, non-fiction storytelling, MYiM is a four-part series chronicling comedian Jamie Loftus’ buck-wild experience engaging with international smart-people-club Mensa after taking the entrance exam as a joke to write a snarky article. She expected a group of elitist snobs; what she found was an official Mensa Facebook group unmoderated to the point of shocking toxicity - a self-protecting virtual small town where users do and say anything without consequence purely because they’ve met and are nice to each other in real life. With Loftus’ new show Lolita Podcast wrapping up soon, MYiM is a great hit of her razor-sharp wit. Available on most podcatchers

KEELHAULED (WEEKLY)

Since launching in March of 2018, developer Rare’s open-world online pirate adventure Sea of Thieves has gone through quite the metamorphosis, almost becoming an entirely different beast with monthly updates and a massive, passionate fanbase. Keeping track of goings-on in the virtual pirating world can be difficult for the average player, and that’s where Captain Logun comes in. Each week on Keelhauled he either chats with some of the biggest names in the game’s content creator fan universe or sails solo breaking down the latest update news and discusses how this might affect the rich lore and gameplay. If you have even a passing interest in Sea of Thieves, Keelhauled is a vital listening experience. captlogun.podbean.com

SLEEP WITH ME (BI-WEEKLY)

Host Drew Ackerman, a sufferer of insomnia, knows the value of good sleep. With this knowledge and a comforting drone of a voice, he has created a podcast designed to help listeners fade to sleep. Ackerman rotates between one-off stories of mundane chores with fantastical twists, recapping episodes of popular movies and television, and installments of episodic serial fiction. As of this writing, we’re just coming off more episodes of his Christmas-themed faux soap opera As The North Pole Turns, which brings some fun drama to the process of falling asleep. Ackerman’s hilarious comedic sensibilities and intentionally boring content make any attempt to fall asleep a wonderful experience.

with Marisa Patwa THE NEW YEAR BRINGS THIEVES, FAIRIES AND SUPERHEROES TO OUR SCREENS

While 2020 was a rocky year, one thing we can count on in 2021 is there will be plenty of good shows to binge watch. Here are three guaranteed winners.

LUPIN (1/8)

Netflix continues to introduce international shows to our binging menu, and I am ready to order up. Lupin is a gorgeously thrilling French heist comedy dropping January 8. And it’s a smart decision for the streaming platform giant, having had four successful seasons with Spanish crime show Money Heist. In the French show, cunning janitor Assane Diop works at the Louvre and has a master plan to steal a priceless necklace - an archived accessory from Marie Antoinette herself. “Go in as janitors, and come out millionaires,” says protagonist Lupin, played by striking and perfectly cast leading French actor Omar Sy, in the heart-pumping trailer. And for sprinkles on top there is an irritable inspector determined to catch him as he tries to avenge his innocent father’s death plot - not to mention plenty of high speed car chases in Paris. Lupin looks to be a fun, fast-paced adventure. And I can’t wait to see who gets to eat the cake.

WANDAVISION (1/15)

It is finally time for us comic book fanatics to get the chance to watch Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprise their roles as Wanda Maximoff and Vision in this Disney+ series, premiering January 15. And the show takes a creative spin on marriage sitcoms of the 50’s, showcasing our fated couple living an idealistic, black and white suburban life in a town called Westview or at least that’s what the trailer teases us with. Kathryn Hahn is set to appear on the show as their nosy neighbor Agnes, with Kat Dennings jumping back into her Thor role of Darcy Lewis and Randall Park slipping into his role as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo, first introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Wasp This take on the characters looks much different from where we left them in Avengers: EndGame and I am excited to explore their relationship more. The six episode Avengers series is also jumpstarting phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with a budget of 150M, there is no doubt all six will be jam-packed with superhero action.

FATE: THE WINX SAGA (1/22)

From witches to vampires and mermaids, the fantasy genre is the perfect avenue to create magical television that transports us viewers. And Netflix is giving us a new mystical creature to add to our queue January 22 with Fate: The Winx Saga. Saga The show is actually a live-action remake of the popular Italian cartoon, first released in 2004. It spotlights five fairies coming of age and growing into their powers, attending boarding school Alfea College in the Otherworld. I wouldn’t mind being transported to another world after 2020, to be honest. And even more excitedly, the show upgrades The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina with supporting player Abigail Cowen graduating to a leading role as powerful fairy Bloom. The trailer alone is an indicator this show will be filled with fantastical fun with fire fists and monsters, glittery gusts of wind and sword fights.

FAKE NEWS FROM THE TRI-STATE by Johnny Fletcher

The latest and greatest stories that you surely missed

AFTER WATCHING THE HORROR SHOW OF 2020 FROM THE SIDELINES, THE YEAR 2021 BOWS OUT, WANTS NO PART OF THE NEXT 12 MONTHS; GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS DISCUSS SKIPPING CALENDAR AHEAD

In a move that has stunned the tri-state and Americans all across the country, the year 2021 has, quite pathetically, punked out. Having witnessed the far-reaching impact of the pandemic, including thousands upon thousands of deaths, economic turmoil and intense political division, it issued a statement this week that simply read, "Thanks, but no thanks," indicating that the year 2021 wants no part of the next 12 months. People everywhere were left scratching their heads, wondering what this all means for the future of the world's greatest superpower. But some, like Evansville's Patrick Guggenheim, were far more concerned with how it might affect their immediate plans to get tanked on New Year's Eve. "I always get blacked-out drunk, baby," Guggenheim proudly explained, adding that he considers the night a total success if he can't recall how he got home or where he left his car. "There's no better feeling in the world, believe me. But what if there's no 2021 the next day and I can't sleep off my ungodly hangover?!" At press time, government officials, in an act of desperation, were reportedly considering moving the calendar ahead a full year - but having gotten wind of this time-table Hail Mary, 2022 quickly assembled an ace legal team, vowing to fight the proposal tooth and nail.

NEW YEAR'S Resolut ions

FROM THE TRI-STATE WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER

MARJORIE Z. MAJORS 2020 was so awful, but I intend to plaster a smile on my face for the whole of the New Year and in doing so, will make this world a better place through my relentless positivity. Of course, considering that I'll be wearing a face mask everywhere I go, no one will actually be able to see my smile. But my eyes will have that crazy look people get when they're faking a good mood so that should get the point across.

TIMOTHY J. BUTTERFIELD I've been short in stature all my life but I'm determined to grow six inches this year. My doctor says that at the age of 42, it's an impossibility, but I'm pretty sure he's lied to me before. For instance, he said that my cigarette smoking would be the death of me, but I'm still alive. How do you account for that? Clearly, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

JUDY B. VANDALET A lot of people are totally over the whole social distancing thing, but I've been thoroughly enjoying being six feet apart from everyone - so much so that I'm resolving to stay at least 20 feet away from all human beings in 2021. The thought of not having to interact with people has given me a new will to live!

NATHAN R. LANCASTER Personally, I'm dedicating myself to doing Jack-squat in 2021. As Seinfeld used to say and I'm paraphrasing here - "Everybody's doing something, we'll do nothing." How long can I keep it up? Right now I'm conďŹ dent that I can cruise through the spring. Of course, when summer rolls around and the weather's nice, that's going to be a real test of my inner fortitude. But if anyone can be of no use to society - even during the most enjoyable time of year - it's me.

HEATHER K. DONNINGTON This year I'm going to do something completely unheard of - and quite possibly detrimental to my health. I'm vowing to read every single word in every single issue of News 4U - from front to back. Every. Single. Word. Just thinking about it is giving me chills, but it's too late, I've made up my mind. There's no turning back now.

ELEANOR VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Growing up with family members that had terrible pet allergies, USI student Megan Cassidy was forced to settle for hamsters and goldfish as companions. But after securing her own apartment, the Communications Studies major thought it was high time to seek out a little furry pal - especially considering the isolating nature of the pandemic. "I have been super-duper safe," she notes, "really doing my part by not going out, not seeing friends - to the point where I was like, 'this is pretty lonely!'" So Cassidy hopped on to petfinder.com and stumbled across a very cute female cat with big eyes that was seemingly meant for her. Housed at the River Kitty Cat Café - conveniently just a block away from where Cassidy interns at the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville - it was just a quick trip to meet this potential rescue. In fact, when she arrived, there sat "Eleanor" perched in the window. It seemed like a made-for-TV moment. But not so fast. "I went inside to see her, but we weren't bonding at all," Cassidy recalls, adding that Eleanor's apparent disinterest made her question if she was a "pet person" after all. Undeterred, however, Cassidy returned for a second meet & greet - and again, was rebuffed. "But I came back a third time - maybe third time's the charm," she laughs. Nope. Still determined to make friends, Cassidy spoke with the Cat Café workers and surmised that Eleanor, surrendered by her previous owner due to health problems, simply didn't care for her new environment - maybe she was used to being the queen of the palace? "So I just decided to take her, anyway, and if it didn't work out, it didn't work out." Spoiler alert: It worked out. Reportedly, as soon as Cassidy got Eleanor back to her apartment - and she was the sole feline around - her entire demeanor changed. "She's so sweet and loves to play - she's not rambunctious and doesn't tear up my stuff," Cassidy happily notes. Just seven months old, Eleanor - described as "very dainty and fancy with long hair" - will likely only get more comfortable as the days go by. After all, this partnership is still "fresh," as Cassidy likes to say. "I'm excited to have a long life with her together!"

THE PROS & THE CONS with Barold Hume

Has the fat lady finally sung? Trump vs. Biden Pt. 4 So, where was I...? Oh right, last month I was pretty convinced that President Trump would never concede the election. And that assessment has proven to be correct. Because as I type this in midDecember, lawsuits are still being filed and there's constant chatter about the Supreme Court overturning the results. Not going to happen, of course. Biden is the president-elect for all intents and purposes, but the show must go on in the MAGA world. It's fascinating, really. Or incredibly exhausting depending on how one is feeling on a given day. After 10 months of Covid and its disruption of daily life, I have to imagine that more and more people are thinking, 'let's just get this whole leader of the country thing ironed out and move on.' But again, DJT has his own unique style and giving up is not in his wheelhouse. Will the ongoing refusal to validate the results - which after numerous recounts and failed legal challenges appear fairly legit - ultimately destroy our collective faith in democracy as some pundits have suggested? Doubtful. It certainly doesn't help, but once the transfer of power finally takes place and Biden finally takes office, people will mellow out a bit - and slowly forget why they were so angry.

tri-state

politics

with Bryan Fox

Acceptance will set in at some point. Trust me, if the Covid situation starts to improve once the vaccines arrive, the mood of the country will improve, too. Unless the Democrats win the Georgia Senate runoff elections - then things could remain dicey, regardless. It just doesn't seem like the U.S. - as divided as it is - will be cool with one party holding all the cards for the next four years. But all that remains to be seen. Maybe 2021 holds great promise or maybe we're completely headed down the crapper, I don't know. What I do know - or am confident about - is that Trump is history (for now) barring some sort of divine intervention. He may well be back in four years, but I do believe I hear the fat lady singing and it's time to exit stage door left - oops, right. Kudos to all the MAGA supporters for hanging in there so long and continuing to back your guy despite the writing on the wall written in 1000 point font. How big is that, by the way? Billboard size? Anyhow, let's all take a deep breath (figuratively speaking, of course - it's not advisable to inhale these days) and chill for a bit.

Whether you like him or not, you must admit that Congressman Larry Bucshon has served the 8th district in Washington at the very least, honorably. While not the most exciting guy out there - he never headed a committee or was ever on the Sunday morning talk shows - he was also never caught up in any controversy. Bucshon was just elected to serve a sixth term in congress by defeating his opponent with over 2/3 of the vote. You can argue that Bucshon has turned the 8th district from a swing district to a solid R. They used to call this district "the

NEWS4U JANUARY 2021 | MUSIC REVIEWS

MILEY CYRUS Plastic Hearts RCA Records From country to pop to now rock, Miley Cyrus can slay any genre she tackles. And she is giving us major 80's rockstar vibes with the powerful Plastic Records which was quickly met with praise, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200. It's not surprising when she recruits rock legends like Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks to duet with her. Lead single “Midnight Sky” is a fierce rock anthem about her being a powerful woman on her own after two breakups over the last year: “I was born to run/ I don’t belong to anyone.” We love an independent woman. And a bonus version featuring Nicks is also included as “Edge of Midnight.” I’ll gladly take two. Cyrus also collaborates with Dua Lipa on “Prisoner,” giving us a gorgeous glam rock song we didn’t know we needed, but surprisingly deserve. Not to mention, a music video of them partying on an 80's tour bus stabbing heart-covered teddy bears and soaking themselves in maraschino cherry juice. Cyrus’ artistry is truly unparalleled and she brings the heat like a Baked Alaska. - Marisa Patwa

TAYLOR SWIFT evermore Republic Records Less than five months after releasing her eighth studio album, Folklore, Taylor Swift sent 2020 out with a bang, dropping evermore on December 11. It's the perfect follow-up to the folksy, coffee shop collection of songs she released last summer. This sister album delves deeper into Swift’s newfound interest in the indie sound, giving us alternative and chamber rock. And her intentions behind the album are pure - trying to lift people’s spirits during a lonely time, especially in the midst of the pandemic. Lead single “Willow” is a gorgeously gothic song with a rhythmic beat that makes you feel like a wanderlust-filled traveler. Another standout is the heartbreaking “evermore,” featuring Bon Iver. The National also delivers in “Coney Island” while Haim surprises in “No Body, No Crime.” I love that the multi-talented singer is experimenting with artists in the indie genre and giving them a chance to showcase their talents. While I will always be a bigger fan of Taylor’s girl-power pop anthems over her country or indie music, this is a sweet display of talent and the songs are truly soothing to the soul. Fingers crossed for a 10th album drop later this year. - Marisa Patwa

SHAWN MENDES Wonder Island Records Finally, we get the collaboration we’ve always thirsted for - two Canadian popstars joining forces - with Justin Bieber bringing his silky vocals to “Monster” on Shawn Mendes' fourth studio release, Wonder. The singers bare their souls, recounting harrowing experiences growing up with the pressures of the spotlight. Mendes reveals, “You put me on a pedestal and tell me I’m the best/ Raise me up into the sky until I’m short of breath” while Bieber laments, “Take responsibility for everything I’ve done/ Holding it against me like you’re the Holy One.” The music video is raw, featuring just the two of them letting the world know they're human, too, under dark, smoky lighting. I hear you boys. “Teach Me How To Love” is a fun, playful beachy song, while “24 hours” is a whimsical love song. Mendes also treats us to a holiday track featuring flame Camilla Cabello with “The Christmas Song.” Fourth time's the charm - Wonder gives us the stripped down version of Mendes we’ve all been craving. - Marisa Patwa

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE The Georgia EP Atlantic Records While 2020 was a trying time for all, the announcement of acclaimed indie-pop outfit Death Cab for Cutie's Georgia EP served as a glimmering light at the end of the tunnel. The Bandcamp exclusive release benefits Fair Fight Action, the Stacey Abrams-founded organization that combats voter suppression, devoting its journey to an idiosyncratic collection of cover songs of Georgia-based bands - ranging from 90’s R&B soul sisters TLC to the psychedelic crew Neutral Milk Hotel - that comes off as a beacon of hope in the world through means of atmospheric reminiscences of earlier works of Panda Bear, opening up the heavens with a simple pound at the piano, and bright yet simple guitar arrangements interwoven in each track. While all the songs pay incredibly close tribute to the original melodies, the subtle hints of ambient swirls found in Cutie’s typical indietronica world in the first half are met with an audacious shift into the grain and distortion of organized somber chaos with a roaring addition of industrial drums, making the band's sound well-recognizable and more. Particularly, Gibbard’s vocals are truthful while thought-provoking and take us through an expedition; singing at first rather optimistically about change, only to return us to the current reality, reminding us there is much work to be done to see a transformation. - Freddie Bourne

THE NETWORK Money Money 2020 Pt II: We Told Ya So! Warner Records, Inc. A year before Green Day released their classic album American Idiot, they let loose and recorded a goofy new wave album. Operating under the name The Network, and trying their best to be anonymous, the band donned disguises and adopted stage names and released Money Money 2020, an album perhaps accidentally more punk than American Idiot. Now that there is a global pandemic, amongst other general discomfort in 2020, The Network have returned after a 17 year hiatus with the appropriately-timed sequel. Disclaimer, it’s not that great of an album (unsurprising), and the first track is truly terrible, but some of the songs absolutely slap. At the very least, Pt II is better than Green Day’s last several albums, and worth checking out for “Ivankkka is a Nazi” alone. - Russ Finn

ADRIANNE LENKER Songs/Instrumentals 4AD Look, I know that everyone loves that Taylor Swift Folklore album, and I’m not going to badmouth it in any way. But I will say, what you ought to be listening to is Adrianne Lenker’s Songs instead. It’s the same album - acoustic guitars, pretty songs, but guess what? Lenker is the best folk songwriter around right now. It was already evident in the four albums she’s released with her band Big Thief, but Songs (released alongside an additional album, Instrumentals) further cements Lenker’s status. I’m not kidding, Lenker is one of the best living lyricists; it’s almost not fair how talented she is. If you like Folklore, keep liking it, that’s fine. I’m just trying to help you. Listen to “Anything” by Lenker right now, then listen to everything she’s ever done. - Russ Finn

DAY CUBE Liikewise Self-Released Athens, Georgia musician Thomas Wilcox has been self-releasing albums under the moniker Day Cube for 20 years. The prolific artist offers an array of synthwave and folk over the course of 12 albums that delve into both experimental and pop alike. Liikewise, the latest effort from Wilcox, is easily a highlight in his catalogue, delivering an eclectic and thoughtful mix of experimental pop songs that recall 80's new wave and post-punk, with dashes of Radiohead, Panda Bear and Toro y Moi thrown in. But make no mistake, Wilcox very much has his own thing going on. Following last year’s acoustic That Which Is Ours, it’s nice to see Day Cube return with a project this bold. - Russ Finn

REA GARVEY Hy Brasil Island Records The 47-year old Irish-German musician debuts his fifth electronically-influenced solo album, which is against-type of his roots in rock music with his band Reamonn. The Voice of Germany judge has been known to experiment since his first solo effort in 2011 but Hy Brasil tends to stretch farther, more into odd genre-bending material such as the Kygo meets Chainsmokers anthem “Talk to Your Body,” the technocumbia bop “Hey, Hey, Hey,” and the Walk the Moon-lite “Caramel.” Hy Brasil, while pleasant, is indeterminate pop. It sounds as if Glen Hansard recreated his Once soundtrack as an urban retelling. The experience leaves you with a question mark; while Garvey continues to upkeep his rockstar appearance, the authentic swagger and rhythmic flow in the project is undeniable. I find that fans of the club scene will get down with some of the record on the dance floor, only to become emotional when listening to Garvey’s narratives of fame, flaws, and loss in the coming days. - Freddie Bourne

Blues with Bragin MICK KOLASSA If You Can’t Be Good, Be Good At It Endless Blues Records Blues legend "Michissippi Mick" is back and bringing the funk with album opener “I Can’t Help Myself” featuring superb bass from Bill Ruffino and organ from Rick Steff. “Lo and Behold,” a James Taylor cover, starts off like an a cappella Gospel hymn before the top-notch musicianship comes in, including blistering guitar from Kolassa and backup vocals from Tullie Brae. The title track starts with great drumming from John Blackmon as Kolassa sings about trying to behave, but having a good time doing the wrong thing. “A Good Day for the Blues” finds Kolassa singing a ballad about falling on hard times and boasts stellar guitar playing reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan. The harmonica from Eric Hughes and violin from Alice Hasen on “I’ve Seen” fit well with Kolassa singing about witnessing great things.“We Gotta,” a jazz inspired tune, feels like something that belongs in an old dance club. The trumpet from Marc Franklin and saxophone from Kirk Smothers take the tune to another level. On “Sweet Tea” Kolassa sings about perhaps the most famous non-alcoholic beverage in the blues world. NEWS4U JANUARY 2021 | BEER REVIEWS

JANUARY BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. PLATFORM CARAMELICIOUS MILK STOUT

YAZOO CINNAMON MILK STOUT

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3

Pours black with a nice light brown head. A hint of cinnamon is evident on the nose as well as some notes of chocolate. The cinnamon is heavy on the palate and throughout the finish. There isn’t much malty sweetness in this, which leaves a little too much cinnamon bitterness for my taste. I also found it to have a bit of a thin mouthfeel for such a dark beer. Still, if you love cinnamon, you might want to give this a try.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A decent tan head tops this black milk stout and never totally evaporates. The nose offers a combination of cinnamon used during brewing as well as sweet scents from the malts. The malt sweetness hits the tongue first, but roasted malt flavors and cinnamon notes come through in the beer’s long finish. Pair it with a dessert like pumpkin pie to accentuate the cinnamon flavor or use it as an ingredient in a pumpkin pie recipe.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours a dark brown, almost black color. It has a light spicy aroma of malt and cinnamon and a light bodied flavor with malts and cinnamon and a touch of hops. Not too sweet and easy to drink. Very similar to a Guinness as it has that creamy mouthfeel.

56 | JANUARY 2021

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

Pours black with a thin caramel-tinted head. Strong notes of chocolate and coffee on the nose. Once it hits the palate, the chocolate flavor intensifies, and it finishes with a nice hint of vanilla. It has a slight stout bitterness, a touch of sweetness, and a hint of warmth from the 7.1% ABV. An overall good winter beer.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5

NEW BELGIUM HIGHER PLANE IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75

A vigorous pour yields a hazy orange color with a thick head. Aromas of citrus, most notably grapefruit, on the nose. With this IPA, the grapefruit notes are very complementary. On the palate you add significant notes of tangerine as well as some malty sweetness. It finishes with just a slight bitterness. This tasty Imperial IPA is wellbalanced and packs a powerful punch at 8.5%.

A thick tan head crowns this opaque milk stout when poured in a traditional English pub glass. Very sweet scents from the malt, lactose and caramel fill the nose. The beer hits the tongue with a smooth mouthfeel, followed by sweetness and a good amount of roasted malt in the long finish. Pair it with spicy foods for a nice contrast or your favorite dessert, especially a big slice of chocolate cake with ice cream.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 5

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a black beer with a dark tan head. It's my kind of crazy beer with a bunch of different flavors. I can smell the sweet malts and taste the roasted malts and hints of coffee and chocolate. I can also taste the sweet caramel which contributes to the appeal of this beer. I haven’t given out very many 5 ratings but this latest Platform creation truly deserves it.

A thick white head forms on this IPA and stays for a long time. As soon as the can opens, the scent of hops comes, with strong fruit notes and a lesser amount of pine. Likewise, the hop presence remains with the first tasting of the beer and continues in the very long finish. Pair it with a variety of foods like blue cheese, salad, herbrubbed meat and sweet chocolate cake.

This beer pours a cloudy, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam and decent carbonation. I can smell the grapefruit, pineapple, orange and toasted caramel. The flavors of this beer are very interesting as I can taste sweet tropical fruit with piney bitterness and a toasted caramel backbone.

NEWS4U JANUARY 2021 | BEER REVIEWS

BREWDOG ELVIS JUICE

is the dominant flavor on the palate, which an IPA enthusiast will likely not appreciate, as it covers up the flavors imparted by the hops. If you are a fan of shandys you might like this, although I would argue that a shandy should not be made with an IPA, as I do not think the grapefruit is complementary to the IPA bitterness.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3

Pours a slightly hazy, mahogany color with a nice head. Strong aromas of grapefruit juice hide the typical IPA hoppiness. Grapefruit juice

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head rests on this IPA and takes its time evaporating. A strong burst of grapefruit used during the brewing process floods the nose. The first sip of the beer seems mild, but the grapefruit

flavor eventually returns and stays in the extended finish. People who enjoy fruity IPAs will definitely want to drink this. Pair it with chicken with avocado and lime salsa or a tangy and salty goat cheese.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a clear, amber-colored beer. It has a strong aroma of grapefruit with a little bit of hops and a bitter grapefruit flavor. This beer is nicely balanced and not too sweet. Overall, this is a very drinkable IPA - not overwhelming and goes down smooth. Plus, it has an ABV of 6.5%. A good beer with an odd name.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
