For nearly a century, the JLE has been dedicated to empowering women to be civic leaders through an effective interactive development program, helping to change societal views and upend gender stereotypes. The organization is proud to highlight this mission by hosting the Women's Conference & Luncheon on November 4 at the Old National Events Plaza. BLUES TRAVELER

Keyboardist Ben Wilson talks Traveler's Blues, the dichotomy of the band's studio/live presentations, "Run-Around" vs. "Hook" and more VICTORY THEATRE / SEPTEMBER 21 / 7 P.M.

Keyboardist Ben Wilson kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Victory. One of the band members stated that it took a "lifetime" for Blues Traveler to be able to play the blues well. What made it such a challenge?

It was very trying, very hard to be as authentic as possible given that we were several generations removed from the greats. There has to be some level of maturity with the blues because unless you grew up playing it, there's a lot of restraint. It's as much what you don't play as what you do play. And also just really listening to what the original guys did - and, you know, the way you phrase your solos, the way your timing is. All of that makes every difference in the world. With rock it can be more bombastic depending on your band or your style, you know. Blues Traveler has always been like, 'We're going to get in your face and try to melt your face off with our live show.' With the blues you can do that but it doesn't sound as authentic. And there are a lot of guys out there that are just the most amazing players in the world and you're like, 'God damn, that

With the music of the 90's seeing a major resurgence over the last year, there's rarely been a better time for Blues Traveler. Formed in New Jersey in 1987, the jam band-influenced rock group came to prominence seven years later, scoring one of the biggest hits of the era. "Run-Around," driven by frontman John Popper's harmonica mastery and a simply irresistible melody, climbed into the top 10 in 1994 - and never left the music public's consciousness. Nearly three decades later, it remains a staple on classic rock radio, as does the successful follow-up single, "Hook." But despite being best known for the Four album and its two indelible hits, Blues Traveler have paved quite a career path for themselves, recording a further 10 albums - including the fantastic new Traveler's Blues - and maintained a deeply loyal fanbase that flocks to the band's live shows, particularly their annual July 4th blowout at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Providing a wonderful antidote to today's over-produced, computer-enhanced pop music, Traveler's Blues finds Popper and company going back to where it all started: the blues. number of deep cuts from the deep south and beyond with the band covering the artists who laid the foundation for the genre - from Son Seals to Richard M. Jones. It's both a fascinating listen and a history lesson for anyone interested in the origins of rock & roll.

PHOTOS: GRAHAM FIELDER

Recorded quickly and with few frills, the album unearths a

guy's good,' but it leaves you hollow. The best blues players can elicit that emotion that makes you feel something. Keyboard-wise, it must have been a pleasure to be able to cut loose on some of these legendary blues songs.

Oh, it was. I was just really excited that everyone was going to do their very best to make the album be as true to the blues as this band could do it. And once we settled into that, it felt very comfortable for me. And when we're listening to these records, you realize that the piano player typically is just all over the road. So there's a lot of freedom. And I think the guys realized that, cool - that will help the authenticity. So from my perspective that was just great because a lot of times when you're doing the rock records... keyboard solos, unless you're the J. Geils Band or Santana, that's something that's really not that featured, especially when you've got a generational talent like Popper there. Do you want to hear a piano solo or do you want to hear Popper? Most people want to hear Popper; that's just the way it goes [laughs]. There's an interesting dichotomy with Blues Traveler in that your

albums generally feature three minute pop/rock songs but live the band often stretches out with lengthy instrumental jams.

There's always been a battle with Blues Traveler because when you come see us live, yeah, you're going to hear "Run-Around" and you're going to hear "Hook," but you're also going to hear a 15 minute non-stop song, one that jams into song two and jams into song three. And a lot of people don't like that. But we've constantly had that seesaw battle once we had the hits. The way we write is just always towards that three to four minute song. So we're trying to do that; it's just what we do. But then when we get on stage we've always kind of paid homage to, you know, the rock side of the jam band world. I think that balancing act has kind of kept us true to ourselves and, therefore, not feeling like we're giving up a lot in order to maintain our career. And if you feel that way then I think you can continue to push. Speaking of the hits, where do you stand on the "Run-Around" vs. "Hook" debate? A lot of fans prefer the latter despite the former being the massive hit.

"Hook" was released [first] and didn't do a damn thing. And then they released "Run-Around" and then they re-released "Hook" because it didn't catch on initially. Of the two songs, as great as "Run-Around" is - and it won all the awards - "Hook" to me is a way cooler song. I'm not saying "Run-Around" didn't deserve to be a hit; I'm just saying that they're similar in that they both have the same structure going around and around and around - it's all John Popper doing his thing. I mean, they're both cool - I'm not trying to put "Run-Around" down. It's just that to me, "Hook" - when you listen to the two songs, the studio versions - "Hook" just has so much more vibe to me.

However, donations will be accepted to benefit the opening of the town museum, so please consider supporting a good cause as you enjoy all that St. Meinrad Rocks Fest has to offer. Event organizer Carol (Ubelhor) Troesch has once again put together a dynamic lineup of local and regional acts - a wide range of talent that illustrates the depth of the tri-state music scene. In all, 15 bands and solo artists - including returning favorites and newcomers - will grace the festival's two stages over the course of Friday and Saturday. And attendees will get "rocked" - though it's a relative term. ""Rocks" is more of an adjective or verb," Troesch explains, "as in... the town is great, and we're rockin' during the event. The name is also a nod to both the paver project and St. Meinrad Sandstone, which is historically a big part of our small town." In addition to all the great live music, the St. Meinrad Rocks Fest features face-painting, balloon art, a live animal show, a beer garden, food trucks and a vendor fair ensuring that community members of all ages will have a blast. 2:45 Band Sold Separately (BG) 3:30 No Governor 5:00 The Flemings (BG) 5:00 Silly Safaris Shows Inc. PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

CLASSICS & POPS PERFORMANCES A little Gershwin, a lot of Broadway: The 2021-2022 EPO season kicks off with two highly-anticipated concerts

Music Director Roger Kalia's first season with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra was a challenging one, indeed, as he faced the difficulty of planning a series of performances in the middle of a pandemic. But the highly-decorated conductor more than rose to the occasion, transitioning effortlessly to Livestream concerts in the interest of protecting the orchestra's valued patrons before limited crowds were eventually allowed back inside the Victory Theatre to experience firsthand the thrill of the Phil. Now with more relaxed safety protocols in place, Kalia's second full season with the EPO promises to be even more engaging; he's lined up a wonderfully diverse series of Classics and Pops performances sure to satisfy loyal fans and win over new converts along the way.

AMERICAN VISIONARIES VICTORY THEATRE / SEPTEMBER 25 / 7 P.M.

Opening night of the 2021-2022 EPO season has all the makings of a classic Classics concert. Featuring Chinese pianist Fei-Fei - winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition and a top finalist at the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition - American Visionaries will celebrate the genius of Gershwin with a performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" as well as spotlight the world premiere of "River City Re-Awakened," a brand new composition by Paul Dooley written specifically for the EPO. The program concludes with "Dances in the Canebrakes" by Florence Price and "Symphonic Dances" from West Side Story, plus a moving musical tribute to the healthcare workers and people we lost to COVID-19.

BROADWAY'S BACK VICTORY THEATRE / OCTOBER 3 / 2 P.M.

The Pops Concert Series opener for the 2021-2022 season takes us straight to the heart of Midtown Manhattan with Broadway's Back, an irresistible program of music

from some of the biggest shows of the last 20 years, including Hamilton, Wicked, Rent, Beetlejuice, Dear Evan Hansen, Lion King, Jersey Boys and more. The EPO will get a welcome assist from talented tenor Luther Lewis who's sure to add even more flair to a joyous evening. You'll feel like you're right there in the thick of a New York night as classic song after classic song is performed - heck, you might even be inspired to sing along!

AMERICAN HORRORPLEX LOUISVILLE, KY / SEPTEMBER 17 - OCTOBER 30

Fear is only the beginning: Get ready for some scary good fun at Louisville's award-winning haunted house While the Olde Catacombs and House of Lecter in downtown Evansville have long been a Halloween time staple for area haunted house fans, just a couple hours east an equally scary tradition takes place every September and October: Louisville's award-winning American Horrorplex. The brainchild of Travis Bolin and Matt Clayton, this screamtastic attraction began life as the 7th Street Haunt back in 2011, an initially low-budget operation with homemade special effects that only grew more sophisticated and frightening - and popular - with each passing season until a necessary relocation six years ago. Complete with an eyecatching video that portrayed the singer being haunted by an inner demon, it was Angel Rhodes' official entrance into the creative arena after years of playing primarily covers at many of the tri-state's most popular bars and restaurants. SHANNON'S WALK New Evansville band channels the "Seattle sound" on debut EP, preps for upcoming live shows

Local musician Tom Wilder has served as the guitarist for the highlyrespected metal outfit Blood Tribe going on nearly 20 years now. And while he's completely loyal to the band, he still appreciates jamming with other players around town on occasion. So back in mid-2019 when longtime friend - and fellow guitarist - Jake Reisinger brought up the possibility of getting together with a few other guys to run through some less challenging, or more palatable, music (after all, Blood Tribe is relentlessly heavy), Wilder was intrigued. Especially after he heard the vocal chops of Jeff Jones. The former Tampa-based singer moved back to the Midwest a few years ago and became friendly with co-worker Sam Whitaker, a kickass drummer with ties to Wilder and Reisinger (the three played in 1369 preBlood Tribe). Not surprisingly, perhaps, it all clicked right from the start. "We wrote two songs the first night we jammed together," Wilder notes. Those initial songs pointed towards a 90's rock direction that clearly referenced the "Seattle sound," as Wilder describes it, but with a Scott Stapp vocal vibe. Over time the band would compile a solid catalog of accomplished originals, three of which - "Do You Really?," "I Never" and "Stalker" - were targeted for an EP. In April of last year, Shannon's Walk (christened such as a tribute to Jones' ex-girlfriend who passed away from adrenal cancer) convened with area producer Matt McGuyer to record the trio of songs. However, the double whammy of COVID and "procrastination," Wilder freely admits, set the release back a bit. But it's finally seeing the light of day and you can score a copy online or pick one up at either of the band's upcoming shows featuring new bass player Nick Halbig: 9/4 at The Venue & 10/2 at Backstage Bar & Grill.

BRANDON MCCARTY Up-and-coming country singer releases "I Found," targets end-of-year EP release

McCarty was making the rounds at area bars, coffee shops and restaurants, performing both covers and original material. Speaking of the latter, he scored a big local hit with 2020's "Niner Fiver," a party anthem on par with the likes of Luke Bryan. But McCarty also has a darker side. Songs like "Alice" and "Perfect" capture a melancholy that truly resonates - as does the new single "I Found" which addresses a relationship gone bad but also touches on the struggles associated with PTSD. "It's a really good song slower and sadder, but I think it will really touch people and lend a helping hand," McCarty says. Beyond "I Found," McCarty plans to release an EP by year's end which will include the latest single plus a few brand

MUHLARKEY WIT MARKIE Local hip-hop fan documenting the Evansville scene via video interviews with the main players

Markie Johnson's love of hip-hop came courtesy of a very in-the-know relative who religiously collected all the latest releases back in the day. "I always used to go over to my cousin Curtis' house - he'd have rows everywhere of CDs, tapes, everything," he recalls. "He'd go to work and I'd go upstairs and rummage through it all and play stuff." Through these covert listening sessions, the 31-year-old Evansville resident got introduced to the likes of Ice-T, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg and N.W.A., developing a real fascination with west coast rappers. And while Johnson never felt compelled to try and follow in their footsteps, he made it a point to support the local scene; after all, he was friendly with many of the tri-state's main hip-hop players, having gone to school with a number of them and remained in contact post-graduation. And then about three years ago, Johnson took his interest to another level. With encouragement from his late cousin Larry, Johnson made the leap from devoted fan to documenting the local hip-hop scene via video interviews with the main players. He began uploading his conversations - which Johnson playfully dubbed Muhlarkey Wit Markie - to YouTube, shedding light on talented area artists and groups like Angry Nerdz, Keló Kadddafi, Biddy, G Dezz, Scotty Hustle, Big Smoov, King Cylis, Big Coop, Dew Dirt, Apollo and more. His format? Seven basic questions - from "When did you start rapping?" to "What's changed since you first started rapping?" - that get to the heart of what makes each rapper tick. And while Johnson has focused exclusively on the Evansville scene to date, he's looking to branch out to Henderson and Owensboro and beyond to show just how far-reaching the tri-state hip-hop scene really is.

CORDUROY

ORBISON Evansville's "weirdo rock band" set to release the wonderfully strange and wholly beautiful Never Again

If there's any doubt left that Evansville is producing some of the coolest original music around, it will be officially erased on September 3 when Corduroy Orbison, one of the tri-state's most innovative

releases

Never

Again, the dazzling full-length followup to 2020's haunting, perfect-for-thepandemic Kenopsia EP. It's just that good, folks. On the face of it, the quartet of David Davis (vocals, guitar), Zach Evans (guitar), Andrew Baum (drums) and Michael Tellez (bass) exists in the realm of indie darlings Modest Mouse, but there's so much more brewing under the surface. The seven conceptual tracks that make up Never Again - so wonderfully strange and wholly beautiful prove that Corduroy Orbison are on a mission to expand their musical vision with each project. Thankfully, we're along for the ride. Never Again is bookended by two songs absolutely buzzing with energy - "At a Loss" which takes off with a Pete Townsend-esque riff before blossoming into something cosmic and other-worldly and the 10-minute, bouncy closer "Dandelion Song" which also references The Who, introducing itself with a nod to the iconic "Teenage Wasteland" keyboard configuration/guitar blast. Both tracks find Davis in peak vocal form, delivering quick-fire lyrics that drive the momentum as Evans and the rhythm section keep pace every step of the way. Tucked in between is a stunning middle section - including the devastatingly gorgeous ballads "Still Broken" and "Tears in Rain" - that calls on the ghost of David Bowie and, particularly, looks to Pet Sounds for inspiration. It stands as the band's finest work to date and begs the question: How is Corduroy Orbison not signed to a label? We'll chat with Evans next month to find out. For now, check the guys out at their Front Porch Fest album release party on September 4.

Local rockers release hook-filled Angry or Blue EP, set their sights on more studio time When we last caught up with Evansville's Idder back in January, the grunge-ified four-piece band was at a bit of a standstill, unable to book recording sessions for a new EP due to the lingering pandemic. A shame, too, because the material at the ready - heavy yet infectious songs like "Angry or Blue," "Come Our Way" and "Ride" - demanded attention, each track as good as anything by the group's main influences, including Mudhoney and Primus. And then there was "Meet in the Parking Lot," a rip-roaring good time replete with F-bombs that gave vocalist/guitarist Adam Roberts an appropriate outlet for some pent-up rage. Cut to seven months later and all is now right in the world of Idder. Roberts, along with guitarist Jake Bethel, bassist Ron Latham and drummer Clay Evans, just recently dropped the 4-track Angry or Blue EP, expertly produced by Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording ("I think he got the best out of us," Roberts notes). And it's not hyperbole to say that this is simply one of the best tri-state releases of late from both a songwriting and performance standpoint. Truly, every song is radio-ready (well, barring those F-bombs); rest assured if WGBF played "Angry or Blue" or "Come Our Way" in rotation their phone lines would light up. But this is just the beginning. Idder intend to go back in the studio sooner than later to record another three tracks, including fan favorite "Apology." And while the band certainly hopes to play some more shows in the near future, their focus is on the creative side of things at the moment - and merchandising. It's all about building a foundation.

SEPTEMBER CINEMA OFFERS UP ENGAGING SUPERHEROES AND VICIOUS ASSASSINS

KATE (9/10)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is one of the most underrated actresses of our generation. I first spotted her talent in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof (2007) and she continued to shine in Scott Pilgrim Versus the World (2010) and the more recent Birds of Prey (2020). Now, she’s getting her own starring role in the Netflix feature Kate as a vicious assassin. The actionpacked film comes from the producers of Atomic Blonde. In this femme fatale story, Kate is shot with a poison that gives her less than 24 hours to track down who attacked her and kill them before she dies herself. Woody Harrelson plays her spy guru guiding Kate as she goes on a kill mission. Newcomer Miku Martineau also joins as Ani, the comedic relief and heart of the movie. Even though she is orphaned thanks to Kate killing her bad parents, she supports her until the end. Here's hoping there is an antidote.

SHANG-CHI & THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS (9/3)

There hasn’t been a movie trailer in a while that has given me an adrenaline rush quite like the one for Shang-Chi which Marvel dropped a few months back on April 19 - which just happens to be the birthday of star Simu Liu, who plays the titular role. This looks to be a truly funny, modern, thrilling and cinematically gorgeous superhero film unlike one we’ve ever seen. Shang-Chi has been born with incredible abilities, what I would call the supernatural martial arts. He’s tried to avoid taking over the cutthroat throne of his father’s kingdom, but he can no longer hide out trying to be a normal human, playing darts in a bar. It’s time to live up to his legacy. This is where comedian Awkwafina comes in as one of his friends. She is mind-blown to discover he’s a part of the superhero world. Michelle Yeoh joins as a guardian to a mythical city. Meng'er Zhang adds some fighting fun as estranged sister Xialing. But I’m most interested to see the showdown between Shang-Chi and his dad. After all, family matters.

VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE (9/24)

Back for round two as Eddie Brock - aka Venom - is action star Tom Hardy. We last saw Hardy on the big screen as the teeth-y, slithery alien superhero in 2018 when he romanced Michelle Williams as Anne Weying and battled Riz Ahmed’s evil Carlton Drake. It’s exciting to have him back with a brand new villain - Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson. Brock is a failed journalist who hopes to resurrect his career by selling a nail-biting interview with serial killer Cletus Kasady, also played by Harrelson. But after Kasady escapes prison, he too becomes host to an alien symbiote known as Carnage. And with equal powers, the two must battle it out - because only one creepy alien creature can be prowling around in the city. For Carnage, it’s to cause destruction; for Venom, it's to save the world, and maybe his career.

Paintbrush: This tattoo is personal to me, as I am a self-proclaimed artist. The real problem is that it was placed in a location that is also frequently covered in real paint. I find myself trying to scrub my tattoo ink off more often than not, forgetting yet again that it's a tattoo. Danielle

I am lucky to have found a group of people from all around the country and all over the world that meet in a very special field once a year to celebrate the ukulele and the community that comes with playing. These people are the perfect example of how we all wish the world would be and I love every single one of them. On the 10th anniversary of the celebration I got coordinates tattooed to the one stage on this magical field that I will always be welcome to play no matter what, till the end of my days. - Jeremiah

ARE YOU IN

Evansville?

Local residents tell us why they're proud to be a part of our growing community

BLAINE LYNCH I have lived in Evansville my entire life and have a strong love for our community. I grew up on the east side of town and graduated from Harrison High School. After high school, I started my career path with FedEx Ground. Over time, I worked my way up to a management position and was there for over 10 years. In 2013, I learned FedEx was looking for a truck washing company to clean and care for their vehicles. An idea came to me and I decided to pursue my own power washing company, Mr. Sudsy Mobile Wash. We now house multiple commercial accounts and have over 2,100 residential customers. I believe in investing in our community and in our company. We would not be here without the people in the tri-state area. I am very humbled to be where we are today. I grew up in section 8 housing and my mom always tried to give me everything that she could. I was always driven to succeed despite the cards I was dealt as a child. The last eight years have been fantastic and I would not change it for the world. We could not have made it without our customers; I am indebted to them and they will continue to be our #1 priority.

ERIKA STRONG RODRIGUEZ I'm originally from Mexico, though my time in the US Army took me to several different states, including Indiana. I have to admit that initially I did not love it here. My plan was to stay for the amount of time I HAD to and return to the West Coast. Eight years later and I am still here. Evansville is a city unlike any other I've had the opportunity to experience. It is a small city if you are looking for a small city and it is a big city if you are looking for a big city. Best of all, Evansville offers so many opportunities for anyone willing to work! Young professionals, students, and families are sure to find a place here. After I had been living in Evansville for a few years, I visited friends on the West Coast in a city I had been to many times and have loved for a long time. Though beautiful as always, the city felt very different during this visit but I couldn't explain it. Suddenly, it dawned on me. I was used to seeing so many city initiatives, city events, so much help offered to the community; I was used to seeing "E is for Everyone" - I was used to feeling welcomed. I asked some friends if there were any events planned this year that were for the community by the community but they had no idea what I meant. I then realized how special Evansville was and is becoming. I also realized in that moment, how much I had grown to love Evansville. Evansville is my Home.

HERCULES VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Chase Haake and his mom reside in the small town of Owensville, Indiana, where they've cared for a number of animals over the years, including an "amazing" chocolate Lab as well as a couple of pups courtesy of an Amish family from Loogootee. Then there was a special furry friend that was rescued from a bad situation down in Texas. Sadly, he developed a tumor and passed away in 2020. But despite "running ourselves through the wringer of dogs," Chase and his mom recently visited the VHS "just to see what kind of dogs they had." Famous last words. In truth, the pair had spied a loveable little guy named "Hercules" online and asked if the senior Schnauzer with a Basset Hound-like body was still available for adoption. "One of the employees had taken him home for the week just to see how he would do - she met us there and told us all about him," Chase explains. "I told mom that one way or another I was getting this dog - either you're buying him or I am." And so Hercules - who reportedly came from a hording situation - headed to his new forever home in Owensville where he quickly made the transition to co-existing peacefully with the family's other dogs - well, after a little trial and error. "One of our dogs is a little more temperamental; we were kind of worried that she would growl and bite him," Chase says. "But since Hercules had been in that hording situation and dealt with so many different dogs, he would just walk by her like nothing was happening. She finally got to a point where she stopped [growling] because it's not fun when he's not reacting." Apart from that minor issue - now resolved - Hercules is loving his new environment and has particularly made a big impression on Chase's grandma whom he goes to visit every day. Though she purports not to be a big animal lover, she fell head over heels for one of the family's previous dogs, "Whisky," and finds Hercules to be an "adorable" reminder of her late furry friend. Sounds like grandma has a real soft spot for animals, actually. But how could anyone resist such a sweet little face?! Hercules has been through a lot in his 10 years but can now look forward to some truly wonderful days up in Owensville - he's earned it!

SPOTTING AN E-GIRL

SPOTTING AN E-BOY

Just like you have the jocks, the nerds and the “popular” girls, each decade also had their own version of an E-Girl/E-Boy aesthetic. Think back to the days of the 80's goth, the 90's grunge, and the 2000's punk/emo era. So, what exactly is an E-Girl/E-Boy? By definition, an E-Girl/EBoy is a short version of an electronic girl or boy. The same way we use the “e” in email is the same way we apply it to this aesthetic. It’s simply showing that the girl or boy has an amplified digital persona. The E-Girl/E-Boy stands out on various platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. Distinguishing an E-Girl/E-Boy today may not be as easy as it was back in the 80's or 90's. Unlike goths, E-Girls/E-Boys don’t come in a select few groups. Because of the extreme need to fit in and follow the next trend that social media brings, lots of teenagers and Gen Zers are falling right into the category of the E-Girl/E-Boy aesthetic.

A sure way to spot an E-Girl is to look at her fashion and style choices. An E-Girl may be dyeing her hair bright pastel pinks or she may be putting black hearts on her cheeks. She might wear chokers, long layered shirts, or belt loop pants. However, the look isn’t the only thing that differentiates the E-Girl. It’s also her love for different animes, the type of music she listens to, her knowledge of the gaming world, and of course, her social media aesthetic. If you’re needing a more in-depth look at the E-Girl aesthetic, go straight to the source: the original E-Girl, Avril Lavigne. From her grunge look and bright pink highlights to her poppunk music and skater girl aesthetic, she set the E-Girl trend. For a more updated version of the E-Girl, take a look at Billie Eilish or Doja Cat.

There are key elements that make an E-Boy stand out. For one, he isn't afraid to wear things deemed as “feminine.” E-Boys may paint their nails or use eyeliner; they may also make black hearts out of makeup under their eyes. E-Boys may also have the 2000's emo hair or have hair long enough to run their fingers through. Dressing is a huge part of the E-Boy aesthetic. E-Boys may be found wearing skinny jeans with chain belt-loops, oversized graphic t-shirts, layered long-sleeve shirts, and a variety of shoes from platform boots to Vanns. The E-Boy also is distinguished by the music he listens to, his knowledge of gaming (most of them having a streaming platform), his love for anime, and once again, his social media persona. If you’re needing a more in-depth look at the E-Boy aesthetic, hop on TikTok. The app is floating with several of them all over.

If you find yourself wondering what the meaning of everyday words are or thinking that TikTok is the sound a clock makes, head on back to this column as we bridge the gap between Gen Zers and the rest of the world.

JOHN MAYER Sob Rock

Columbia Records

TONES AND I Welcome to the Madhouse Bad Batch Records

His vocals are so sweet you don’t even need

Tones and I’s single “Dance Monkey”

a raspberry scone at the coffee shop where his music is playing over the speakers. John Mayer is back with his eighth studio album, romancing us with his easy, breezy tracks once again. The truth is, when you put him on it’s a whole mood. And this latest collection of sexy, bluesy treats for the eardrums passes the vibe check. To some, it might just be lounge chair rock, but Mayer manages to titillate all the senses with “Shot in the Dark” and “Why You No Love Me." “Last Train Home” is an ode to 80's romantic comedies with electric guitar and cheesy lyrics: “I’m not a fallen angel, I just fell behind/ I'm out of luck and I'm out of time/ If you don't wanna love me, let me go/ I'm runnin' for the last train.” “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does” is an instant, soothing classic. Mayer performed it gorgeously on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, guitar in hand under a periwinkle and dreamsicle background. If albums were the weather, this one would be sunset. - Marisa Patwa

went to number one in over 30 countries in 2019. This summer, we finally got the treat of her debut album. The addictive electric beats and sick singing interlaced in her breakout song are back. Throughout the album are dance diggities and beasty ballads. The Australian rookie is a jack of all trades when it comes to her singing styles. The tracks are mostly self-produced with no collabs just yet. It always helps to add some extra sauce as a newbie but truthfully, she doesn’t need any more on her menu. “I Won’t Sleep” takes you on a wild ride, from the spooky fun music video to her chilling vocals and tongue-twisty lyrics: “You know you're never too old for the kingdom, 'cause the kingdom's in your vein/ I'm not a queen, but you know that I'm the kingpin/ If you're a freak, then come and play.” “Fly Away'' is absolutely breathtaking with a powerhouse chorus: "'Cause I had a dream that someday/ I would just fly, fly away/ And I always knew I couldn't stay/ So I had a dream that I'd just fly away, away, oh.” Simple, but beautiful. - Marisa Patwa

TIMES OF GRACE Songs of Loss & Separation Wicked Good Records BILLIE EILISH Happier Than Ever Darkroom / Interscope Records Breakout “bad girl" Billie Eilish is back with her second studio album. This beauty is just as eclectic as her first which captivated the world and garnered her almost 90 million followers. The title track is a grungy, soothing ride. It also has an inspiring music video. Eilish’s house gets flooded and she claws her way out through the dark water. As she floats to the top, she belts out, “I could talk about every time that you showed up on time/ But I'd have an empty line, 'cause you never did/ Never paid any mind to my mother or friends, so I/ Shut 'em all out for you 'cause I was a kid.” Other knockouts include “Getting Older,” “Everybody Dies,” and “Billie Bossa Nova,” a surprisingly seductive song showcasing the best of her breathy vocals. The whole album is passionate and vulnerable and full of self-reflection. Co-written by her brother - and tried and true collaborator - Finneas O'Connell, Happier Than Ever was developed

in quarantine. I'm happy it’s finally seeing daylight. - Marisa Patwa

If you’re going to wait a decade between your first and second albums, then the follow-up better be good! Fortunately,

the

sophomore

effort

from Times of Grace is everything that (some) fans hoped for and more. Times of Grace is the side project of guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and vocalist Jesse Leach (both are founding members of Massachusetts-based Killswitch Engage). When KSE isn’t delivering their signature “metalcore” sound and touring, Dutkiewicz and Leach explore deeper, more melodic, ethereal material that they cannot play otherwise. Many KSE fans wouldn’t accept such a departure from the signature KSE sound to which they’ve become accustomed. As a KSE fan, however, I was thrilled to hear the pair do something different. The songs are slower, with a focus on creating a musical moment and building to something powerful, emotional and meaningful. There are also positive themes – redemption for the hopeless and finding purpose and identity in this life. Strongest tracks: “To Carry the Weight,” “Cold” and “Bleed Me.” - Matt Alschbach

ME REX Megabear Self-Released Normally, an experimental album is something I can appreciate for its artistic ambitions, even when I don’t fully like the end result. Megabear, the debut album by London band ME REX, is certainly ambitious - 52 short songs intended to be played on shuffle. Each song is in the same key and tempo and features similar instrumentation, melodies, and lyrics throughout. Cool idea, right? No. The resulting album is a 30 minute bore. All of these short songs sound pretty much exactly the same, and they aren’t even exciting in the slightest. Because I was respectfully listening to the album on shuffle, I couldn’t tell when the album would end, and I desperately wanted it to end. This is the most pretentious posh crap I’ve heard come from London, of which there is a lot. - Russ Finn

JAPANESE BREAKFAST Jubilee Dead Oceans The brainchild of Michelle Zauner, Japanese Breakfast continues to churn out wonderfully exotic and unexpected chaos with this third studio effort. Jubilee stays true to Zauner’s fondness of experimental pop but makes it a point to find a keen balance between her lo-fi roots and commercialism. The first half of the record can point to similarities with Carly Rae Jepsen’s catalog, oozing with lush orchestrations featuring trumpets (“Paprika”), soaring vocals (“Be Sweet”), and new wave meets nu-disco (“Slide Tackle”). But the album also dives into Lisa Germano feelings of folk-rock and a polish of cello and violin (“Kokomo, IN”). Eventually, Zauner changes the tune by electing Tears for Fears and Phil Collins’ drum patterns and production effects to take charge to give the record a minimal pop journey (“Posing in Bondage”

ISAIAH RASHAD The House is Burning Down Top Dawg Entertainment Warner Records Hailing from Chattanooga and signed to the label known for launching Kendrick Lamar and SZA, Isaiah Rashad’s third album is subdued and underwhelming. Rashad is an incredible rapper whose vision was executed wonderfully on 2016's The Sun’s Tirade, and the raps on The House is Burning Down are still relatively top-notch. The problem stems from how boring the album can be. While it features some incredible singles like “Lay Wit Ya,” the remaining tracks do little to differentiate themselves from that song. Plus, the beats on this album sound really repetitive, which makes very few songs stand out. The House is Burning Down is certainly not bad,

and “Sit”), before steering the latter half towards ballads that remind you of Keane in their heyday. Here Zauner showcases her incredibly strong low vocal capabilities and pays homage to the music that put Japanese Breakfast on the map. - Freddie Bourne

Blues with Bragin MICK KOLASSA Wasted Youth Endless Blues Records

The prolific Mick Kolassa returns with Wasted Youth. Opener “Throwing Away These Blues” is a sock hop-inspired jam featuring Marc Franklin’s

but Rashad has the talent to make something great. - Russ Finn

GRATIS Gratis Rebore Records The debut record from Evansville’s very own Gratis is a chaotic display of rock and roll. From beginning to end, the band is all over the place with intense freak-out fits that incorporate quick time signature changes, math-rock riffs, free jazz jams, harsh noise, and sweet moments of ambient tranquility. Full of improvisation and cut from various live demos and unreleased material, the 10 songs on Gratis were compiled from music recorded from 2005 to 2009. I’m not sure what kept Gratis from releasing this material for so long (12 years after the band's dissolution), but I’m certainly glad they did. Gratis is an incredible punk record and a wonderful document of the pre-PG Café scene. It’s one of the coolest Evansville albums I’ve ever heard. - Russ Finn

trumpet and Kirk Smothers’ saxophone. The title track offers stellar harmonica playing from special guest Eric Hughes as Kolassa waxes nostalgic. Bill Rufino’s bass shines at the beginning of “It Hurts to Let You Go,” a jazz-influenced ballad tailor-made for pouring a drink. The horns return to a prominent role on “I’m Missing You” as Rufino’s bass offers a funky complement. “Easy Doesn’t Live Here” finds Kolassa singing about persevering through difficulties. Rick Steff’s organ fits well with the horn section on “I Can’t Get Enough” as Kolassa sings about loving a person’s quirks. “Feeling Sorry for Myself” continues Steff’s piano prowess as Kolassa croons about needing to wallow in self-pity. Kolassa discusses needing to reconnect with someone in the aptly named “Touching Bass.” Rufino’s psychedelic bass solo in the middle fits well. Special guest Brandon Santini lends superb harmonica playing to “My Mind Doesn’t Wander.” “Pieces of My Past” features solid drumming from Doug McMinn. The album closes with “Edge of a Razor” featuring Albert Castiglia on slide guitar. Blues fans are in for a treat. For more info, visit mimsmick.com. - Paul Bragin

SEPTEMBER BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. BELL'S SPARKLE BERRY

URBAN CHESTNUT O-KATZ

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This is a very typical Oktoberfest marzen. It pours a clear amber and has a full white head that persists. Notes of toasted malt on the nose. Slightly sweet on the palate with a caramel maltiness. The hops are subtle and balanced well with the malty sweetness. While lagers are not my go-to beers, I think a marzen fan will appreciate this beer.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This is described as a raspberry Belgian style ale. It has a raspberry red hue with a thin head that dissipates quickly. Raspberry on the nose and distinct tartness on the front of the palate, with a fresh effervescence from the high carbonation. Finishes slightly bitter, without the estery notes typical of a Belgian Tripel. Refreshing on a hot day, but at 9% ABV you might not want two.

BOULEVARD TANK 7

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.75

Tank 7 is an American Saison that represents the style very well. Thick head on a clear yellow pour, this has notes of clove on the nose. On the palate that clove continues and is accompanied by a distinct spiciness. It finishes slightly sweet with no lingering bitterness and fills the palate with the estery flavors typical of a Saison.

PAUL BRAGIN - 5

A good white head tops this Oktoberfest style beer when poured in a traditional beer mug. A generous amount of malt controls the scent profile. Similarly, sweet malt flavors remain during the initial tasting of the beer, with a slight hop presence, followed by more malt flavors in the finish. Drink this seasonal offering while it’s available. Pair it with traditional German foods like sausages, sauerkraut and a generous helping of German fries.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thick head with a slight pink tint forms on this Belgian Tripel style beer and slowly evaporates. The beer boasts a dark red color. A burst of raspberry scent fills the nose. Likewise, raspberry flavor hits the tongue first when drinking the beer, with some malt and hops coming through in the finish. People who like fruity beers should try this seasonal offering. Pair it with salmon, brie, angel food cake or dark chocolate.

A thick white head crowns this straw-colored American Saison style ale when poured in a tulip glass. The scent profile offers a good balance of malt and hops. The malt and hop flavors seem to wrestle back and forth on the tongue with the first sip and remain in the extended finish. Every craft beer aficionado should drink this one. The versatility of this beer lends itself to pairing with nearly any food imaginable.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This beer pours a burgundy-orange with decent carbonation. It has the aroma of bread and biscuit. The flavors are bread, biscuit and rye. This is a good representation of an Oktoberfest beer - overall, it's above average and I do like the pint can.

56 | SEPTEMBER 2021

This beer has a pinkish color with decent carbonation. I can smell tart raspberries. Taste is the same as the aroma. I would have liked some Belgian yeast flavors, especially the spices. I'm a fan of Bell’s but this is just average.

This beer pours a hazy amber color. It has a sweet hops flavor with an 8.5% ABV. I'm very impressed with this beer - it's pretty smooth and has Belgian characteristics to it with clover and other spices. Best of all, it's easy to drink.

VICTORY DIRTWOLF

with subtle tropical notes. On the palate I taste a touch of stone fruit with a slightly malty sweetness. It finishes with a strong bitterness typical of a traditional IPA, not nearly as smooth as you tend to find with a typical Double IPA. If you crave that bitterness, give this a try.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25 PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.25

This pours a clear, yellow hue with a nice white head. On the nose there are hoppy aromas

A decent white head rests on this Double IPA. A good amount of hops dominate the scent profile, especially citrus notes. The hop flavors of citrus and pine continue while drinking the beer,

especially in the long finish. The high alcohol content provides a real punch. People who enjoy hoppy beers will want to drink this. Pair it with picnic classics like hamburgers and barbecue, or pair it with hard cheeses.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

The beer pours a clear straw color and I can smell and taste the sweet hops right away. This is a solid Double IPA with an ABV of 8.7%. I haven't tried that many Victory beers but this one is pretty decent; in fact, I may have to try some of their other offerings.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Q: I was walking my dog on a leash in my neighborhood recently when a neighbor's dog suddenly appeared off-leash (with the owner nowhere in sight) and attacked my dog. Sadly, my dog suffered multiple injuries and had to be euthanized. What options do I have in terms of pursuing legal action against my negligent neighbor?

A:

Dogs are great companions and friends. However, a dog owner is responsible for caring for the dog. If a dog owner fails to monitor and control the dog, a dog attack can (and likely will) occur. In evaluating the merits of a legal case stemming from a dog attack, several factors must be considered, including the following: • Did the dog bite occur on the dog owner’s property? • Was the dog on a leash? • Has the dog bitten or acted aggressively before? • Is the dog breed known for aggression? • Is a person (landlord, neighbor, etc.) other than the dog owner potentially responsible for the attack? • Is there insurance coverage for the dog attack? • Was a person attacked, and if so, what scarring or other injuries resulted? • If a person was attacked, was the person a mail carrier? • Was another dog attacked? There are certainly more factors to consider but these factors are basic questions to consider. In the scenario posed here, Indiana law recognizes a legal claim for injury to a dog but considers a dog to be “property.” So, the recoverable damages would be limited to the value of the dog (think how much was paid for the dog not what the dog is worth to the owner) and vet bills.
