Joyful Sounds
>> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, More than all the bright, vibrant lights, the blustery chill of the wind, the warmth of family and the decadent aromas of holiday food, the month of December is filled with joyful sound in the tri-state. Specific performances in December that carry the twinkle of tinsel and the notion of Noel within their notes include the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s Peppermint Pops concert and their presentation of The Nutcracker accompanying the lithe movements of the Evansville Ballet at the Victory Theatre, the Bill Gaither Christmas Homecoming Tour 2013 at the Ford Center and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s presentation of Handel’s Messiah by Candlelight at the Trinity United Methodist Church. For those who want the same amount of joy in their holiday performances but in a more secular sense, Straight No Chaser at the Centre has you covered, enveloping you in a sea of voices and vocal tones. Another option would be the down-home, soulful and playful musical stylings of the Zac Brown Band, sure to get you on your feet. Joyful sounds in a different sense are plentiful this month as well with comedian Jeff Dunham bringing healthy ballyhoos to the Ford Center and Bill Cosby kicking it old school at the Centre.

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra
presents
Peppermint Pops Concert, The Nutcracker & More! by Jaimie Humbert
Christmas melodies are a cornerstone of holiday celebration. Experience the season’s musical traditions with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s symphony productions, kicking off with the Peppermint Pops on Saturday, December 7 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at the Victory Theatre. Led by Maestro, Alfred Savia and featuring tenor Doug LaBrecque, a Broadway veteran and Carnegie Hall soloist, the Peppermint Pops returns as the oldest musical tradition in the tri-state.
“T
he holidays haven’t truly begun until the Peppermint Pops,” claims Savia. “It kicks off the holiday season.” And it is likely to sell out. Celebratinghis25thyearwiththePhilharmonic, Savia creates this year’s Peppermint Pops with his favorite artists. Opening with “Winter Wonderland” and exploring a variety of styles including A Musicological Journey through the 12 Days of Christmas, which features Renaissance and Baroque composers, along with handbell choirs, the Philharmonic Chorus of 130 singers, a balletic portion from The Nutcracker and a Broadway-inspired performance from Jan’s School of Dance. “If people go to one concert a year, it’s Peppermint Pops. People put it on their calendar.” Savia never gets tired of the familiar Christmas tunes: “It’s more a production than a concert.” A production requires staging and finding a suitable flow with the full orchestra. Combining production elements with the music is an evolving challenge that creates a new experience every year, and Peppermint Pops offers two full hours of spectacle and symphony. Act One features the fantasy of winter time and Act Two inspirits the true meaning of Christmas. During the Peppermint Pops weekend, on Saturday, December 7 at 2 p.m., Maestro Savia brings new meaning to his role as conductor by setting off on the Bunny Bread Candy Cane Express, a Christmas program for the youngest carolers, which
features LaBrecque, some of the repertoire from Peppermint Pops and sing-along favorites. According to Savia, LaBrecque is one of Evansville’s “favorite artists for Peppermint Pops” and his addition to the Candy Cane Express creates a one-of-akind matinee performance. The Candy Cane Express is the true family concert for the holidays, offering a one hour symphony production with lighter material and more Santa Claus, and is suitable for preschool and elementary school children. Another family tradition around Christmas time, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, returns to the Victory on Saturday, December 14 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Artistic Director Mark Bush, who has danced with American Ballet Theatre’s Ballet Repertory and Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, stages the Evansville Ballet’s presentation of one of Tchaikovsky’s most famous compositions. The Evansville Ballet will be accompanied by the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Savia. “[The Nutcracker] is something the musicians really forward to,” says Savia. The Nutcracker has been an Evansville tradition for the orchestra for more than 20 years. The two act ballet was originally produced in Russia in 1892 and was resurrected in the United States in the 1960’s. The Nutcracker has since become synonymous with the holiday season. The music from the ballet is easily recognized from holiday commercials, malls and television specials, but the production comes alive with music, dance and magic onstage. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Philharmonic Box Office at 812-425-5050 or by visiting www.evansvillephilharmonic.org.

An Interview with David Gries, Director of the Environmental Division of the Vanderburgh County Health Department
Casey Williams, Assistant Director for the Healthy Communities Partnership Tobacco-Free Initiative, recently sat down with David Gries, Director of the Environmental Division of the Vanderburgh County Health Department, to discuss his experiences with enforcing the Evansville Smoke-Free Air Ordinance.
Casey Williams (CW): Could you describe your position at the Health Department and what role you play with the smoke-free air ordinance? David Gries (DG): I’m the Director of the Environmental Division of the Vanderburgh County Health Department. The Health Department along with the Evansville Police Department, the Sheriff ’s Office and the Building Commission are all charged with enforcing the smoke-free air ordinance. However, all complaints are filed with the health department. CW: What was the initial response from the businesses affected? DG: Initially the responses were somewhat varied, depending on how they perceived it would affect their business, but I would say over 90% of the people I encountered were very positive. CW: When the ordinance first went into effect, were businesses complying? DG: Compliance was never really an issue. Even the businesses that did not support the ordinance were willing to comply. CW: Since the ordinance went into effect, how many enforcement complaints has the Health Department received? DG: In 2012, there were 78 complaints, 56 on-site inspections and 124 consultations. In 2013, there were 32 complaints, 18 inspections, and 30 consultations. The on-site inspections typically resulted from businesses wanting to have us come take a look and make sure they were in compliance with the law, and the consultations were usually just questions people had over the phone.
CW: What effect has the smoke-free air ordinance had on the community at large? DG: I think that a comprehensive smoke-free air ordinance is a key factor in the health of our community. It is a basic foundation issue in promoting good health. Yes, there are other issues that need to be addressed as well, but if you want to start somewhere to promote a healthier community, starting with a smoke-free air ordinance is key. This ordinance has had a positive effect in people’s attitudes about their own health and makes people more conscious about what is going on in their environment. It’s helping people realize that the environment plays a big part in their health. I believe we are now seeing a true buy- in to the positive health effects this ordinance has provided. CW: Have electronic cigarettes caused any confusion resulting in enforcement complaints? DG: We have received calls regarding electronic cigarettes. Usually from business owners that have questions about whether or not the ordinance prohibits their use. CW: Many local venues and public places have begun restricting use of electronic cigarettes. We now know that electronic cigarettes contain carcinogens. In your personal opinion, do you feel electronic cigarettes should be included in our smoke-free air ordinance to prevent potential health risks to the public? DG: I do feel they should be included in our ordinance for a couple of different reasons. First, they have caused some confusion, but more importantly the health consequences. We just don’t know exactly what is in these electronic cigarettes. There is not enough data or research to show what affect they will have on people, but until we find out more about them they should be included in our ordinance. Several local places have already voluntarily begun restricting their use. —If you have additional questions concerning smoke free ordinances in Evansville and Vanderburgh County, call the Health Department at (812) 435-5695
CW: Have any fines been issued? DG: No. We have issued several warnings, but no fines have been issued.

by Johnny Fletcher Three years ago, the Junior League of Evansville gathered to brainstorm a new, exciting way to further their long-standing mission of raising money to help women, children and families in need. All options were on the table.
T
hey settled on a bike race. And my, how the event has grown… 2014’s event has expanded to two days and opposed to having the Battle of the Bands after the race like years past, they have switched it up so that the Battle of the Bands takes place the night before the main race. The main race will take place on May 10 this time around, on the beautiful Evansville Greenway along the Ohio River and features a 5, 25, 60 and 100K bike rides. Shorter distances are geared more toward families and novice bikers while the longer rides satisfy the serious participants who train every weekend. Fully-stocked rest stops are strategically placed along the routes (some even provide entertainment in the form of local bands) and a kids’ park offering blow-up jump houses, face painting and other fun activities keeps the little ones occupied. The night before the main race gets going; a new event will take place. The Glow Run will allow participants to traverse a music-filled glowing course. After the Glow Run, the competition really heats up with the much anticipated Battle of the Bands. Sure to blow the roof off of host Tropicana Evansville (which provides a cash bar and great food), the 21-and-over event features a showdown between five bands chosen from submitted mp3’s of original music. Each band plays approximately 45 minutes, and the competition is judged by both the crowd and local celebrities. As with the majority of fundraising events in town, the Rockin River City Ride is a collaborative effort. The Junior League partners with the Evansville Morning Rotary. So, come on out and support this exciting fundraiser that caters to the whole family. Please visit www.rockinrivercityride.org, call the Junior League of Evansville at 812-434-6710 or email rivercityride@yahoo.com for more info, and be sure to mark your calendar for May 9 & 10, 2014.

@ the
Ford Center
by Thomas Ellis
Exactly five years ago, a road-tested band from Georgia took the country music charts by storm with the down-home anthem, “Chicken Fried.” he phenomenal success of the single and accompanying album, The Foundation, launched the Zac Brown Band into the stratosphere. All total, the 2008 major label debut spawned four number one singles, dominating the airwaves for nearly two years and making the Atlanta-based group bona fide superstars. It all seemed to happen so quickly and easily; but in fact, it took years of heavy touring and numerous line-up changes to find the right musical formula. Initially, a trio formed in 2002 by its namesake, the Zac Brown Band independently released 2004’s Far from Einstyne and 2005’s Home Grown. Neither album bothered the country charts, but the live shows became a major talking point with the addition of some highly-talented multi-instrumentalists. Between the intriguing mix of musicians and arresting vocal harmonies, the record companies finally took notice.
T
In 2008, the band signed with Atlantic Records and promptly re-recorded an old song that first appeared on Home Grown. When the second coming of “Chicken Fried” hit country radio in late 2008, it was a breath of fresh air, pumping new life into a stagnant genre. Appropriately, the band was rewarded with a Grammy for Best New Artist. 2010’s You Get What You Give proved that the staggering success of the major label debut was no fluke. Amazingly, the sophomore album matched its haul of four number one singles, including “As She’s Walking Away,” recorded with Alan Jackson. More awards – and yet another addition to the band – followed. Last year’s highly-anticipated Uncaged featured no less than seven members, as percussionist Daniel de los Reyes joined the musical brotherhood full-time. His influence is felt all over the record, and the band as a whole sounds wholly confident, moving from genre to genre with ease. The countrified feel of “Chicken Fried” is still intact, but the album feels as fresh as that single did back in 2008. More than anything, Uncaged seems designed to get you moving. Songs like country radio smash “Jump Right In” have an irresistible rhythm that really comes alive in concert with the new percussionist. Seven is clearly Zac Brown Band’s lucky number.
Don’t miss country music’s best live band at the Ford Center on December 29th. The show starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.thefordcenter.com.

An Interview with
“Disorderly Conduct Ford Tour” Center @ the
by Thomas Ellis
Jeff Dunham has made quite a career out of playing with dolls. With a diverse cast of hilarious characters including hyper-active Peanut, grumpy Walter and incompetent suicide bomber, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, he has revolutionized the art of ventriloquism and become a top entertainment draw all over America and beyond.
D
unham first gained national recognition through an appearance on the Tonight Show, but his big break came in 2003 with a Comedy Central showcase. The feature presentation inspired Dunham to release Arguing with Myself, a DVD of a live performance in California. It and subsequent videos such as Spark of Insanity and last year’s Minding the Monsters have sold millions of copies. But nothing can replace seeing Dunham and his dummies in person. Currently in the middle of the “Disorderly Conduct Tour,” which arrives in Evansville on December 8th at the Ford Center, Dunham kindly
answered a few questions before boarding another plane.
News4U (N4U): Off the top of my head, I can’t think of another contemporary ventriloquist apart from yourself. How do you explain such a lonely profession - and how in the world have you made such a success out of it? Jeff Dunham (JD): I fought that battle from day one. There’s a disdain for ventriloquists – you’re lumped in with plate spinners, accordion players and mimes. I’ve been at it forever, and the one thing I pride myself on is that I’ve put a fresh patina on an old, tired and sad art. I’ve made it hip and fun again. N4U: With a growing cast of characters, how do you plan out each show in terms of the flow – the time each character is allotted? Achmed the Dead Terrorist became wildly popular after first being introduced, and I assume the overwhelming positive reaction changed your presentation.
16 | December 2013
• www.evansvillemediagroup.com
JD: It goes without saying that Achmed certainly has allowed me to
break through in places that otherwise might have remained closed for a while. His clips on Youtube put whatever ride it is that the characters and I are on into a very high orbit. Achmed is definitely a crowd pleaser. The positioning of the characters can change from show to show depending on the audience and if I am trying out new material.
N4U: I will never forget the night I saw the horror classic Magic starring Anthony Hopkins. The dark tale of an evil ventriloquism doll gave me nightmares as a teenager. What is it about the dolls that render them equally comedic and disturbing? JD: There’s some sort of unwritten license that allows an inanimate object that becomes animate to get away with stuff that a mere mortal never could, whether it be funny or frightening. N4U: In recent years, your stand-up material has received nearly as much attention as your ventriloquism. Would you ever consider performing strictly as a comedian in the future – even if just for a few shows? JD: It’s easy to get lost behind the doll. People pay attention to the dummy and forget who you are and that you’re even there. I do my own stand-up, and that’s fun – but if I had to do straight-up comedy and couldn’t use the dummy anymore, I would give up and go into real estate. It just wouldn’t be as fun for me. The show starts at 3 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m. For more information, visit thefordcenter.com.

“W
e believe it is a service that helps keep people safe during times of celebration. A free cab ride is something that many people take advantage of . . . to keep the roads safe and our community safe,” said Kristan Robertson, Marketing Assistant for Woods & Woods. Drunk driving is not an accident but a decision, one that jeopardizes the safety of others. Party seekers can be responsible this holiday season by getting a free ride from Unity Taxi, Woods & Woods’ community partner for the Safe Night Program. Safe Night Cab Rides will be available in Evansville and Newburgh from 11 p.m. on Tuesday,
December 31 through 4 a.m. on Wednesday, January 1.
Cab rides are provided from local bars and restaurants to an individual’s residence. Rides cannot be guaranteed due to the large volume of calls, but every attempt will be made to honor requests.
Over a thousand people have received free rides through the program, and the firm encourages revelers to take advantage of the service if they need safe passage. “We are motivated to continue this program because we know it helps keep our community safe, and that is something we will always love to do,” said Robertson. One of the most popular musicals ever to hit Broadway, Mamma Mia! returns to Evansville in December.
T
he musical, which is based on the songs of ABBA, a Swedish pop/dance group, tells the story of Sophie, a bride-to-be who dreams of having her absent father walk her down the aisle. The story is set in a beach resort in the Mediterranean and follows 20-year-old Sophie who wishes for one thing: for her father to walk her down the aisle and give her away to her husband. The only problem is she doesn’t know who her father is, and her mother is keeping it a secret. After Sophie discovers her mother’s diary from the year she was born, she invites three men to her wedding who could possibly be her father. She believes she will spot her father the moment she sees him, but realizes she doesn’t have a clue. Mayhem
ensues when her mother is displeased and confused that the three men are there. The men catch on to what’s going on, and all believe they’re Sophie’s father, and her fiancé is getting fed up with the mess. The show encourages singing along, and has full-on highenergy, with periodic breaks for ballads and drama. The show is part of the Broadway at the Centre program and it plays at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Aiken Theatre at The Centre in Evansville. Seats are $62, $47 and $32.

JASON WATSON FOOD CRITIC
Backstage Bar & Grill 524 Main St. Evansville, IN 47708 (812) 424-5020 Backstage is located directly across from our Ford Center making it a perfect spot before a game, concert or Disney Event if you so choose. Backstage serves lunch and dinner with plenty of seating. It was obvious these guys are taking a lot of pride in the quality of ingredients they are using. Most everything is made in-house or cut from local meat and vegetable farms. In came the 3 Pigs, and little they are not! A soft baguette sat opposite each side of more BBQ pork, Virginia-style ham and applewood-smoked bacon. It was rather tasty…like you’re surprised! Topped with creole mayo and provolone cheese, it’s kind of a no brainer if your heart can handle it. Then, what they called the Italian Stallion. A slightly lighter sandwich compiled of 100% all beef pepperoni, all beef salami, mozz and marinara, set in between a toasted flat bread. Salty yes, but the spice of the pepperoni certainly came through, as well did the quality of the meats. Certainly, a spot for food, drink and plenty of live bands!
Rockhouse @ Wolf'’s 31 N. Green St. Henderson, KY 42420 (270) 212-1400 There a few things that please me more than seeing our downtown areas beginning to prosper again. But I do have to say, Evansville, you better catch up. I have been to downtown Hendo quite a few times in the past months and things are getting done! Rockhouse @ Wolf’s is an establishment that your grandparents would remember. With family seating, Rockhouse still leaves that pub feel. Renovated yes, but the bean soup remains the same. I’m not sure how old this recipe is, but one can tell while it’s lasted. Filled with navy beans, diced carrots, onion, celery and proper-sized chunks of cured ham, a tasty broth - just slightly spiced - set me up for the cool night ahead. Next, came the hot wings. I went medium, because I wasn’t trying to ruin my taste buds for the next course. Slightly breaded and fried crispy, the medium had plenty of heat. I have a hard time whining about anything that mixes spicy and vinegar, so yeah…they’re good! Then, taco pizza… Something I rarely see anymore, but brings back memories. The crust was semi-dense with a crispy underside. Topped with plenty of seasoned ground beef, melted mozz, chopped lettuce, tomato and sour cream, my night was complete and appetite satisfied.

Lear shares, “Let us have the pleasure of doing your baking and cooking so that you can enjoy the holidays with your family.”

efore you pull your hair out trying to plan your holiday season, remember that there are a number of steps you can take to ensure a fun and festive time. This winter, preparing your family’s meal doesn’t have to be stressful or time consuming when there are local restaurants like the Pie Pan to assist. The Pie Pan was started in 1978 and has been locally owned by Libby Lear for the last 30 years. For small dining parties, the Pie Pan can provide dine-in or carry-out options to enjoy. They offer both ham and turkey selections. For larger holiday feasts, you might consider supplementing a portion of your meal. Lear recommends Pie Pan’s famous yeast rolls. Yeast rolls compliment any meat selection, and they can serve a dual purpose: first, to compliment the entrée. Secondly, if you add jams to your table, it can make a light after-dinner sweet treat. You can also purchase your formal desserts from the Pie Pan. They now offer three different kinds of layer cake: carrot, chocolate and red velvet. The Pie Pan is also a multiple Courier & Press Readers’ Choice Award winner for their mouth-watering pie selection. From fruit pies, to pecan pies, chocolate pies, meringue pies and more, Lear and her staff can provide you with one of their scrumptious creations to wow your guests with your final course. Pulling off a holiday meal is all in the presentation, though. For-go disposable dinnerware and break out the finer plates to show your guests that they are worth the extra effort. Add a theme or color coordinate your table for additional effect. From plates, to napkins, table cloths and table accents, you can bring it all together for an aesthetically-pleasing fare. Whether cooking your own foods, carrying in part of the meal or the entire meal, the additional key to a successful holiday feast is to time it correctly. Read your cooking or reheat instructions carefully and/or heed the advice of experienced cooks like Lear at the Pie Pan to make sure that you do no overheat or dry out your meal. What also helps is to make sure that all of your guests are clear on the meal time. Does the 5 p.m. you told them mean the arrival time or the time you plan to serve the food? One late person can hold up (and potentially ruin) an entire meal, so setting the expectation that you have a sharp meal start time eases any guilt for having the food on the table at the time that you stated.

What ' s ‘ Cookin
the head as soon as it touches your tongue. It was a fantastic compliment to the enchilada and the steak. As far as its complete flavor profile goes, it had a balanced earthy, savory and spicy taste. Lastly, and it is not a complete dish in-and-of-itself, but as much care and quality that is put into it, it should be: the Los Bravos guacamole. It was made right in front of us, which provided an interesting distraction. The key ingredients were fresh guacamoles, onions, jalapenos and tomatoes. The resulting taste from the mixing of all of these ingredients was like all of the freshness of a farmer’s market in my mouth. It was a brilliant light green, the ultimate zesty and earthy goodness and was slowly punctuated by the heat of the jalapenos. I loaded up Los Bravos’ fresh, crispy chips with so much of the guacamole dip at one time; I had trouble not breaking each chip. As I stated before, Los Bravos Mexican Restaurant has it all when it comes to Mexican style and flavor with friendly service. So, when you get the craving for Mexican, this place should be your ultimate destination.

hen it comes to Mexican cuisine, the name that seems to be on everyone’s lips in the tri-state is Los Bravos. This is no surprise, with their extensive menu including seafood, lunch, A La Carte, vegetarian, combination and even ‘create your own dish’ options, they are a one-stop-eatery for Mexican food. Also, with three Evansville locations and one restaurant in Boonville, Jasper and Loogootee, Los Bravos is as accessible as it comes to most anyone in the area. Upon entering any of these locations, the eyes are engorged with vibrant, tropical colors reminiscent of the various species of macaw. A kaleidoscope of reds, yellows, greens, blues and oranges that perk you up right when you walk in. The bright colors, teamed with the tinny but sincere Mariachi tunes, melt away the problems and concerns of the day and your spirits are lifted. You are inspired to party, but at the same time, the Los Bravos atmosphere also makes for a great date night with its wonderful balance of familiarity and eccentricity. Now, onto the eats… The first dish I tried was the restaurant’s best seller: Chicken on the Beach. Like the restaurant itself, its popularity is welldeserved. It is a simple, but satisfying and savory mix of rice, tender chicken and decadent white cheese sauce. It’s an ideal choice if you are looking for comfort food. The flavor profile is very accessible and it sticks to the ribs, but as with most comfort food, it is probably not the best choice if you are looking for something light. The next dish was the #4, a seafood option, the Shrimp Fajita Quesadilla. I am a big fan of quesadillas and this one did not disappoint. The shrimp was tender, perfectly-cooked and the texture of the dish as a whole was well-balanced with a slight crunch from the fresh-grilled veggies. The last dish I tried was the #48, the Rib-Eye a la Tampiquena. It is a rib-eye steak topped with peppers, onions and tomatoes and served with a cheese enchilada and beans. The star of this dish for me was the Los Bravos red sauce. It has just the right amount of heat that doesn’t clobber you over

I am very blessed to love my job and my Bauerhaus family. Whether I cook Thanksgiving for six or I [do] catering for 1,000, I really do put love into my dishes.” — Julie March Executive Chef

eralding from Florida, Bauerhaus Executive Chef Julie March moved to Evansville when she was 13. March had originally planned to go into the medical field, but she soon realized that she was always working in the restaurant industry that she truly enjoyed. So, she officially started her career soon thereafter. Working at The Bauerhaus (previously known as Bauer’s Grove) was her first job. She enjoyed working the big picnics where companies would invite their employees and their families to come out for a day of fun and food. It was through these bookings that March learned how to fry chicken… lots of chicken. March shares, “I soon discovered how rewarding it was to feed people and have them enjoy what I prepared. So, when the executive chef position was available. I was more than happy to come home. That is really how it felt.”
So what does March enjoy about her job? She says, “I love coming to work, knowing that every day is different. Every day challenges me. One day, I might be preparing homemade chili for a hayride for 50. The next day we will be catering to several offices around town, all leaving at the same time. On the weekend, creating that special meal for someone’s wedding day is so rewarding. So with the variety, it helps to keep the passion to make every dish that comes out of our kitchen delicious. It is never a boring day for me or my team.” March says that it is her mom who got her started with cooking. She shares, “I really have to give my mom credit for the recipe and my love of cooking. From a very young age, I was always in the kitchen with her. She made breakfast & dinner every day even though she worked full time. I don’t even really remember having fast food until high school. When I was 10, all the practice, and mom’s patience paid off. My mom had just gotten out of the hospital two days before Thanksgiving. I wanted to show her that I could take care of dinner for my family of six. So, with my whisk in hand and determination to succeed, I made the whole Thanksgiving dinner by myself. But to be perfectly honest, all day, I ran back and forth from the kitchen to her bedroom with a million questions. She probably thought it would have been easier to do it herself!” March enjoys living in the Evansville area because it is where she met her husband. She also loves that it has a small town feel, but there is plenty to do. With that being said, her favorite dish on the Bauerhaus menu is the Shrimp Scampi with Garlic and Herb Linguini. She says, “You have to put some love into the sauce and cook the shrimp perfectly.” Her favorite dish to cook, though, is the homemade dressing. She shares, “I still use my mom’s recipe. So I always think of her when I cook turkey and dressing, and I make a lot of dressing, especially this time of year.” March adds she helped Bauerhaus recently create a whole new corporate menu. She thinks that is has a wide variety of items to choose from, including lighter items for lunch fare. For weddings, she recommends the Chicken Florentine, which according to her is, “one of my signature dishes for weddings. Most everyone likes chicken and most have not tried the Chicken Florentine. It is a really crowd pleaser.” She also adds, “I am very blessed to love my job and my Bauerhaus family. Whether I cook Thanksgiving for six or I [do] catering for 1,000, I really do put love into my dishes.”

Bill Cosby at the Centre by Thomas Ellis
Calling someone an “entertainment legend” is akin to pulling the curtain down on a long, successful career. But in the case of 76-year-old Bill Cosby, it seems like he’s just getting started.
S
tar of such iconic television shows as I Spy and the top-rated sitcom of all-time, The Cosby Show, the Philadelphia native is really a stand-up comedian at heart. For 50 years, Cosby has performed in clubs and auditoriums all over the world, sharing his humorous, family-friendly observations about life with a relaxed, disarming delivery. He simply walks on stage, pulls up a chair and starts talking – no notes, no Teleprompters - spinning everyday tales that are entirely relatable and always hilarious. The cross-section of fans at each show only validates the genius of his approach; his appeal is truly universal. Unlike most comedians working today, Cosby refrains from using vulgar language, never settling for cheap laughs. It truly sets him apart from the pack and helps to explain why his
40 | December 2013
career has outlasted so many others – and why he commands the respect of huge stars like Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and Ricky Gervais. They all owe a tremendous debt to the man who made it all possible. In fact, Rock can be seen effusively praising Cosby in the 2002 documentary, Comedian, excitedly telling Seinfeld about a recent two hour set that his hero performed. As Rock heaps on the platitudes, Seinfeld can only shake his head, more than aware that both of them are merely living in Cosby’s world. In 2009, Cosby received the coveted Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. It could not have been awarded to a more deserving comedian. He continues to work at his craft with the enthusiasm and dedication of someone just starting in the business.
Evansville is privileged to welcome entertainment legend Bill Cosby to the Centre on December 7th. The show starts at 8 p.m. The Centre is located at 715 Locust St. For more information, visit centre.evansvillegis.com. • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

his Christmas season, try starting a new yearly tradition with your family and stop by Christmas at Germania VI for a wonderful, cultural experience! This event features many exciting activities. Of course, the main attraction is the wonderful German food they serve. I personally, love any type of German cooking. So that alone would make me want to go to this event. Of course, if you need more than food to sway you, they have plenty more things for you to do. For instance, they also offer an original pageant along with great choral music the whole family will enjoy! Said choral music is being featured by The Germania Maennerchor and Damenchor. Admission is only $27.50 per person, seating starts 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Now, I know the price might make some of us waver because of budget concerns but it is assured that the experience is worth every single penny. Now, I could tell you all about this event but to truly get the full enjoyment, you’ll have to check it out for yourself. So, if you want to do something different with the family, come down to Christmas at Germania VI for the enriching cultural experience. Seating for this event is very limited, so you’ll want to make a reservation right away.

EPO’s Handel’s
Messiah by Candlelight
M
aestro Alfred Savia’s Silver Anniversary season with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra is off to a tremendous start. Opening night sponsored by Toyota featured the world premier of “Quick Silver” written by composer Larry Alan Smith. It was followed by last month’s brilliant presentation of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly at the Victory Theatre. Now Maestro Savia and the EPO will change venues for the much-anticipated presentation of Handel’s Messiah, a holiday experience for the whole family and the ideal preparation for the coming of the Christ child. Beautiful Trinity Methodist Church will host the EPO’s performance of Handel’s Messiah on December 21 at 7 p.m. The English Gothic sanctuary offers a setting similar to the Irish church where Messiah was originally played. Handel’s famous oratorio is generally considered to be a commentary on the Nativity, Passion, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ. So, the setting provided by Trinity Methodist Church could not be more perfect. Surrounded by candlelight, seasoned soloists will conjure the joy of Christmas as Maestro Savia works his magic, conducting one of the finest orchestras around. And don’t miss the EPO “Peppermint Pops” shows at the Victory Theatre on December 7th and 8th.
—Johnny Fletcher
Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 216 S.E. 3rd St. in Evansville. General admission tickets are $23. For more information, visit evansvillephilharmonic.org or call 812-425-5050.

Terry Seaton
L
ocal “southern writer” Terry Seaton recently published Across the Channel, his first collection of short stories and poems. 25 years in the making, it parallels the highs and lows of the author’s unlikely journey from factory worker to teacher – a journey that began when Seaton signed up for his first college class at the somewhat advanced age of 36. “I’d never written anything before then – I didn’t even write in high school. I’m lucky I even graduated,” he says with a smirk. In the preceding years, Seaton worked a number of jobs, including a stint as a coal miner, eventually taking a position –and a pay cut - at Whirpool. He took classes in the evening and delivered pizza on the weekends to help bridge the financial gap – all while trying to stay remotely sane and keep from nodding off. The strain of it all greatly impacted Seaton’s personal life, but his creative side was flourishing in the classroom. “My English professor just raved about my writing,” he says, “so I kept taking more English classes.” Spurred by the encouragement, Seaton began attending USI’s RopeWalk Writers Retreat in New Harmony. There, he experienced his “15 minutes of Fame” – a big endorsement of his story “The Path of Righteousness” from novelist John Hawkes. It was sweet vindication for all the hard work and lost sleep. Sadly, the celebration was short-lived. Seaton was summarily brought back down to earth by the harsh critique of former Esquire Magazine Fiction Editor, Rust Hills. After comparing one of Seaton’s short stories to a Hemingway piece he particularly loathed, Hills reportedly quipped, “don’t quit your day job.” Momentarily dazed by the unflattering appraisal of his work,

Seaton laid low for a bit but ultimately loved writing too much to give up. As the years went by, Seaton slowly chipped away at a college degree, taking classes when time and finances permitted. He was still undeclared but then noticed that he had a backlog of English credits. After that, it was simply a choice between being an editor or a teacher; it was not a difficult one to make. Through a job fair at USI, Seaton landed a position at Mt. Vernon High School where he still teaches English today – 19 years and counting. “The kids are the only reason I am in education,” he says. “If I had to be involved in administration, I wouldn’t do it. Politicians don’t want education, they just want indoctrination.” One of the students that Seaton still keeps in contact with is Jenna Reuger, a supremely talented photographer and graphic designer. By all accounts, she virtually willed Across the Channel into existence through her persistence and much-needed cheerleading. “She talked me into doing it and designed the whole thing,” Seaton explains. “It’s really more her book than mine – I just did the writing.” And the writing is excellent, indeed. There’s a touch of Hemingway, of course, but the greater influences are adventure writers like James Patterson and Clive Cussler. The focus is “on people and the effect of their environment on them.” In other words, Seaton is best described as a “southern writer.” The poems, including several about his father’s experience in WWII, are neither flowery nor lyrical but rather narrative; they fit in seamlessly with the short stories. Remarkably, despite the long gestation period, Across the Channel holds together remarkably well. Seaton is quite rightly proud of his accomplishment. “As William Faulkner said, if a book isn’t entertaining, it’s a failure.” —Thomas Ellis
Across the Channel is available online at amazon.com and locally at Barnes & Noble.

soundboard Soul & Strings
O
n any given night in the tri-state, you can catch any number of amazing cover bands to fit the mood – there’s no shortage of talent. And yet, only one has the powerful, roomsilencing vocals of Shelly Long, singer for Soul & Strings, a dynamic duo with a truly unique dynamic. A generation apart, the 37-year-old single mom and her musical partner, 62-yearold family man, Steve Nilssen, make an unlikely pair. It’s not just the age difference; their personalities seem at odds, too. While Long bubbles with excitement and loves to talk, Nilssen is quiet and reserved, happy to cede the limelight. But in a classic case of opposites attracting, the two have developed a strong musical bond born out of mutual respect and appreciation for the opportunity to share the stage together. Long made her live debut at age six, irritating the grumpy residents at a local nursing home with a performance of “Hey Good Lookin’” by Hank Williams, Sr. – a song she still sings today. It was a harsh lesson in knowing your audience, but Long recovered, joining the choir at school and making no secret of her dream to make it big. “That’s what I wanted to do with my life, but my family wasn’t really supportive,” she explains. “They all thought I should get married and have kids. Most girls dream of their wedding day, but I dreamt of receiving a Grammy.” Despite the no-vote of confidence at home, Long did pick up vital musical influences: Linda Ronstadt, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler from her mom; Bob Seger, Journey and Hank Williams, Jr. from her dad. She also grew very fond of R&B, drawn to the voices of Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Lauren Hill.
Post high school, Long’s career path hit a major speed bump. She became a parent and reportedly made some “poor choices” – factors that contributed to a seven year break from singing. But an opportunity to perform the national anthem – Long’s favorite song – at a local sporting event put her back on track. Soon, her soulful voice was in demand; she recorded an album of original material for an independent label and vowed to never again stop singing. Still, she needed a musical foil. As a kid growing up in Ohio in 1965, Steve Nilssen heard the opening chords of the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” and was floored by the Rickenbacker guitar sound. “I was feeling things I’d never felt before,” he says. “I had to learn how to make that sound, so I bought a guitar and started a garage band.” Self-described as a “shy young man, almost terrified of the public,” music allowed Nilssen to come out of his shell and interact with the world. He eventually settled in Evansville, raised four kids and played guitar every single day – alone. As fate would have it, Nilssen and Long’s mother are coworkers. Two years ago, she suggested that Nilssen and her daughter play together – merge the soul with the strings – for a benefit music festival called “Groovin’ on Grace Lane.” Their short but wide-ranging set of covers and Long’s vocals, in particular, stopped everyone cold. Over the last two years, that reaction has been a familiar one; the duo’s undeniable chemistry has made them an oft-requested favorite at places like Greek’s Pizzeria, Backstage Bar & Grill and Rockhouse at Wolf’s. “Every level that we’ve gone to, it’s like the rush keeps ratcheting up – we don’t want it to stop.” —Thomas Ellis

Keith Hudson Keith Hudson Ministries of
by Nikki Davis In late October, Keith and Mary Hudson visited the tri-state to spread the word of the Lord at the Abundant Life Community Church in Newburgh.
B
etter known as singer Katy Perry’s parents, the Hudsons are seasoned public speakers touring the country to share their message. Described as an “end time messenger,” Keith urges us to look away from ourselves and turn our attention to the Lord; he calls on us to look at our priorities and put God first. But if you don’t know Keith or haven’t heard him speak, you might be swayed by the online stories about his reference to Katy as a “devil child.” However, once you get to know this kind and sincere man, you can separate fact from fiction and see the family strength and Christian devotion of the parents who have raised one of our nation’s biggest pop stars.
contest. But we never forced her into it. Everybody has a talent, a gift, and I just tell parents to let that creative ability flourish and encourage it as long as it’s healthy. That’s what we did with Katy, and she just started singing at nine years old. Everywhere she went, we always knew where she was. She’d sing in the backseat of the car, and she’d sing in her room. You always knew where she was in the house. We took her to probably five or six different vocal coaches, and so we inspired her in that way. I feel like parents should allow their kids to develop their talents and choose what they want to do. For more information about the Hudsons and their message, visit keithhudson.org. keithhudson.org
News4U (N4U): What is the mission of your ministry work? Keith Hudson (KH): We are touching the heart of this generation, sharing with them a message of the Gospel which is the good news. We’re letting them know it’s a great life and telling them how they can know the Lord in a very unique way. N4U: Describe your relationship with your daughter Katy.
KH: We have a great relationship. Unfortunately, the press and the paparazzi say and do things that are totally untrue. They try to separate us and create a division. It was reported that I called Katy a ‘devil child.’ There’s no record, there’s no audio, there’s nothing. It was just some guy from a British tabloid. He was sitting in a service where I was speaking, and he said I said that. But we researched it with the people who were there, and no one heard me say it. The reporter just lied. I have to deal with that all the time. For some reason, the media likes to sensationalize everything, and it’s always something that puts you in the gutter. They never want to talk about something that’s good and wholesome. Anyone that knows me or knows the ministry knows I would never refer to my daughter like that. N4U: What lessons or words of wisdom do you share with other parents? KH: One thing I talk about is the relationship with your family – that you must let your children grow up and be what God has placed, a God given gift from the inside of each child. We didn’t force Katy into singing even though she was really cute as a child. You can see from those pictures of her - they have been in the magazines. She was cute enough to be in a beauty Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • December 2013

Goose Island Sixth Day
Daniel Knight • 3.75
This is a seasonal rye ale from Denmark. It pours up a murky, brownish-tan and settles to a long-lasting, two-finger head. Some research sways me to believe that it’s a wild yeast used in this brew referred to as “brett,” as well as some flavorful spice that adds a twist to both the aroma and taste of this dry, mildly hoppy ale. The 22 oz. bottle allowed me to acclimate and enjoy this very drinkable and seasonally-suited brew.
This one’s an American Brown ale that’s 8.3 ABV— an Imperial Brown Ale of sorts. It pours a dark, reddish brown with a slight creamy head that fades quickly. There’s a nice scent of malts, spices, light hops and molasses. Its taste is of light roasted English malts, toffee, brown sugar and hints of chocolate. Like most brews, just as I started really making friends with it, it was time for another.
Paul Bragin • 4
A decent head with a whitish-tan color forms on this beer and stays for some time before disappearing. The dark red ale left behind has a wonderful scent of spices. Cinnamon and nutmeg come to mind. The taste is more of the same. This would pair very well next to a slice of apple or pumpkin pie. The bottle says the beer can be aged for a year. It will be interesting to see how it aged in a year.
This beer from Denmark fills the glass with a cloudy, golden liquid and a thick, white head that takes its time when it evaporates, but never completely disappears. The nose has a nice, fruity aroma. Bubbles flood the mouth with the first sip of the beer. The fruity presence from the scent continues while drinking the beer. This would make a great gift for the beer lover on your Christmas list.

This beer poured like an amber ale and looked pretty good. It had some earthy qualities to it and a small hint of some spices. I did detect an odd flavor in this beer that I couldn’t put my finger on. My friend Paul said he thought it was apricot, I think it tasted something like a cleanser. I didn’t care for it.

This beer looks like your classic rusty, brown ale. I noticed the 8.3% ABV and was glad the bumped up alcohol didn’t ruin this beer like it does to some. It is a sweet beer and I would almost compare it to a Belgian Double.

Dampf Loc
Daniel Knight • 3
Dampf Loc is an all-barley, warm, fermented ale based on a medieval Bavarian “steam beer” style. It pours up cloudy and copper in color with a beige foamy head. Its aroma is of toasty malts mostly with some yeastiness and light hops. The flavor follows its aroma with hints of light caramel and malt, with a light, clean hop bitterness lingering in the background. There’s a likable slight bitterness at the finish. I’d have another.
Paul Bragin • 4
A significant white head forms when this beer is poured. It disappears rather quickly, leaving only a deep, golden steam beer behind. The sweet smell of malt dominates the scent profile. The malty sweetness remains when drinking the beer, and some hoppy notes come through later. This beer is very easy to drink and could easily serve as a nice introduction for someone who is new to the world of craft beer.
Jabez Martinez • 4
This was a cloudy, amber beer but since I had the Widmer Brothers brew right before it, I couldn’t really taste it. By the looks of the bottle I wasn’t really expecting a wheat beer. It was a decent Hefeweizen. It had the sweetness of the malts but it was a little on the lighter side.
Widmer Brothers Brrrr
Paul Bragin • 4.5
This dark red beer leaves no head when poured. The scent is full of hops like an India Pale Ale and reminiscent of a pine tree, which seems fitting for this seasonal Christmas beer. The hops stay when tasting the beer and provide a very comforting drinking experience, followed by malt flavors, but the hops seem to stay with the aftertaste. This would be a nice way to show a hophead you care about them this holiday season.
Jabez Martinez• 3 Daniel Knight • 4.5
A seasonal red ale. It pours a deep, slightly hazy red-copper, with an inch of off-white head and nice lacing. Smell is caramel, pine, tangerine and toffee. There’s a lot going on in this one with rich and big flavor. The taste is bitter and hoppy, with some roasted characteristics - some holiday spice and sweetness. It’s more like a sweet and spicy IPA than a red ale. It took a few drinks to come around to it. Now, I’m thinking it’s time to buy some more!
This beer had a heavy hop aroma, so I had the feeling it would be sort of an IPA. I was right. The hops flavor overpowered the other flavors listed on the bottle. I wished they would have cut back on the hops to let the other flavors in this beer come out. It does have a 7.2 % ABV though.
Random Beer Quotes! “You can’t be a real country unless you have beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.” — Frank Zappa “Not all chemicals are bad. After earning a B.A. in studio art from Augsburg College in 1990, she built her first ceramics studio in her basement in 1992, and found the relative isolation uninspiring. In 1998, she moved to a studio at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Arts in Red Wing, Minn. Here it became apparent that discussing and showing work while absorbing and giving feedback was an integral part of her artistic process. While in Graduate school at the University of Iowa, a new community climate and its consequent relationships led her to work with new combinations of forms and surfaces. She began creating cups that nestled into the safety of their bases, and salt and peppers that huddled together on soft but imposing landscapes. Within such pieces, she found echoes of dependency, deflation, comfort, contrast, inflation, elevation and finally cohesion.

Bill Gaither Christmas Homecoming Tour 2013 by Thomas Ellis
Over 20 years ago, gospel great Bill Gaither had a very simple idea: honor the “heroes” of southern gospel music.
H
e assembled such revered artists as the Speers, the Gatlins and Hovie Lister to sing the gospel standard “Where Could I Go but to the Lord?” It was meant to be a one-off, but a funny thing happened. After the moving recording session, the musicians gathered around and reminisced about all the good times, sharing stories, joining in song. Thankfully, the cameras were rolling. Later released as the first in a long series of Gaither Homecoming videos, the legendary gathering caught on film became a big seller and launched a hugely successful tour that is still going strong. The holiday
edition returns to Evansville on December 13th at the Ford Center. Gaither spoke with News4U ahead of the show. News4U (N4U): Your tours have reached far and wide. What is the response like outside of America? Bill Gaither (BG): The Gaither Homecoming DVD’s have been transported all over the world. So, when we go to places like Brazil, the fans literally drown us out during the chorus of “Because He Lives” – all of them singing in Portuguese. It’s pretty overwhelming. N4U: Evansville is a regular stop on the “Homecoming Tour.” How do you decide what to play each year? BG: We change the set list quite a bit. Our repertoire is pretty big, but there are some songs people want to hear every year. The Christmas shows are different because they’re about half holiday songs and half standards.
N4U: The songwriting partnership with your wife, Gloria, may be one of the longest running in the history of music. BG: We’ve been married for 50 years, and we’ve been writing ever since. This year, we’ve written about eight songs – it’s in our blood. We were both English teachers – both loved the arts, poetry and the Lord. Put all that together and you get songwriters. N4U: Some of the artists involved in the initial Gaither Homecoming are no longer with us. Who can we expect to see at the Ford Center? BG: The Gaither Vocal Band features the golden voices of Mark Lowry, David Phelps and Wes Hampton. We’ll be joined onstage by the Martins, the Isaacs, Kevin Williams and many others.
The show starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. For more information, visit the fordcenter.com.

It was the Best of Times; it was the Worst of Times… Being single for the holidays can be quite miserable if you don’t know how to handle it. Well-meaning friends are constantly trying to set you up with people they think will be right for you. Your parents are asking, ‘When are you going to settle down?’ and ‘When are we going to get me some grandbabies?’ It can get quite annoying - and sometimes depressing - fast.
hen everyone is pairing up like they’re boarding Noah’s Ark, here are some survival tips for keeping your sanity.
The first thing you need to do is look good. Sounds
kind of superficial, I know, but follow me here. There have been numerous studies that show how we present ourselves through our appearance has a profound effect on how we feel! Look great, feel great. Single Thread Boutique is a fab place to pull a show stopping look together ladies. For the fellas, I would give Abyss Co. a try to get a unique look.
Now that you look great, stop and take a second to realize that you are completely awesome. Yes, you are single. No, there is nothing wrong with that. You may not have a significant other, but I bet you have a ton of other amazing things going for you! Any time someone wants ask about Mr. Right, change the subject and tell them about something cool you’re up to.
When you are single, you don’t have to make an extra trip to your partner’s family’s house for holiday affairs. Why not use that extra time to volunteer? Check out www.volunteertristate.com! Tis’ the season to be jolly! So get fly, love yourself, lend a helping hand and embrace the magic in being single!

The Wolf of Wall Street Paramount
Leonardo DiCaprio (playing real-life, corrupt Wall Street stockbroker, Jordan Belfort) is director Martin Scorsese’s boy. Their past body of work (The Aviator, The Departed) speaks for itself. Now, throw in Jonah Hill and Matthew McConaughey following the rise and fall from the top - all done in perfect Scorsese fashion: the harsh American dream. Now, I’ve heard arguments saying, ‘Americans already are worshiping the wrong idols, we don’t need another movie like this, glamorizing money and corruption.’ I’ll tell you what... Scorsese has always showed the highs and lows, in equal fashion. Some said Scorsese’s classic Goodfellas ‘glamorized being a gangster.’ In that film Scorsese showed, through lessons of harsh violence, that crime doesn’t pay. I think this will convey that message, without the blood. This is on my top-watch list. Maybe it will finally get one of America’s finest directors the Oscar he has deserved for decades.
December 25 47 Ronin Universal
This is a remake of a 1941 Japanese film of the same name. The tale originated around the eighteenth century, and is the best known example of the samurai’s code of honor. Bushido: the way of the warrior. In the most extreme aspects of this code, a samurai might be asked by superiors to commit hara-kiri—ritualistic suicide by their own sword, a traditionally honorable death. Keanu Reeves (Speed, The Matrix) is the leading man in this modernized remake, with Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim, The Brothers Bloom) alongside. When their master is killed, 47 rogue, wondering samurai seek to avenge his death, battling a ruthless Shogun. It seems as if Hollywood is so desperate for ideas, they have no problem taking a wonderful movie like Kenji Mizoguchi’s black-and-white, two part, 47 Ronin and adding their excessive cleanliness to it... And Keanu Reeves doesn’t help.

Pacific Rim Warner Bros.
A fissure opens within the Pacific Ocean, bridging the gap between Earth and another realm. A monstrous sea creature called the Kaiju emerges, destroying San Francisco before being killed by the military. Subsequent attacks follow, and the world unites to create a new technology that can combat the giant beasts. The Jaeger Program: towering robots, bred for warfare, operated by two pilots (the burden of driving these tactical leviathans is too draining for one) working as one mechanized body. Their minds fused together in a neural bridge. After the Kaiju destroys nearly all of the Jaegers, it’s up to a washed-up pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested newbie (Rinko Kikuchi) whom share a special bond. If you enjoy robots, Godzilla-like monsters, and excessively intricate, sometimes overwhelming CGI, this is a movie for you. Sensory overload at times and a little long, but... If you like that stuff, it’ll be epic.
The Heat
20th Century Fox Uptight, prudish FBI Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) travels to Boston to help locate a drug kingpin in the hope of a promotion. She has an attitude problem and doesn’t get along well with others. Once in Boston, she teams up with foul-mouthed, streetwise Detective Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) who tries to break her out of her shell, and shows her that she doesn’t always have to do things “by the book.” Bullock tries (maybe succeeds in) using her charm to carry this movie. McCarthy plays a good contrast in her four-letterword vulgarity, quite profane (and funny) at times. I don’t think it had the campy cheese needed to play itself off as a 1970’s cop flick as intended. But haven’t we seen enough of these movies? I laughed. It’s an R-rated cop comedy that doesn’t try to disguise itself as anything but what it is… Another buddy-cop movie. —Russell J. cd reviews A Perfect Circle
Three Sixty Ume 4/5 Last time I checked, Tool front man Maynard James Keenan had a serious aversion to playing the music industry game. So, it’s a bit surprising to see the release of a greatest hits album by his highly successful side project, A Perfect Circle. Then again, maybe it’s yet another subversive move designed to further confound and confuse – or maybe it was just in the fine print of APC’s recording contract. It matters not; Three Sixty is here regardless, a chronological culling of 12 tracks from the band’s three excellent studio albums and a new recording to appease fans that have been waiting impatiently for a proper follow-up to 2004’s eMOTIVe. Keenan and APC accomplice, Billy Howerdel, put a more darkly melodic, ethereal spin on the Tool sound with the release of 2000’s Mer De Noms; the songs were shorter, too. Some hardcore MJK fans may have winced when first confronted with this treasonous near-accessibility but it’s difficult to argue with songs like “Judith” and “The Hollow.” 2003’s Thirteenth Step contained more evidence of the band’s Siouxsie fascination with gothic-inspired tracks like “The Noose” and “Blue.” The following year, APC recorded eMOTIVe, a primarily devolved covers album plus two originals – both of which are included. For the uninitiated, Three Sixty is the perfect place to start; it’s an impressive summation of APC to date and a reminder of life beyond Tool.
Jus Post Bellum
Oh July Crash Avenue 4/5 Oh July is the sophomore release from Brooklyn-based Jus Post Bellum, a folk/gospel duo of quiet beauty. Both Geoffrey Wilson and Hannah Jensen possess strong, fluid voices but their delivery remains understated throughout, always serving the true intent of the songs. Musically, the approach is just as reserved – no real highs, just resignation. The de-emphasis of the drums in the mix and the fairly muted guitars keep the focus squarely on the words. Oh July is an on-going story set to music. “Gimme that Gun” opens with a hymn-like vocal passage that casts a mournful shadow. Wilson and Jensen sound weary, like long-suffering travelers. As the banjo, acoustic guitar and rolling drums creep in, Wilson darkly intones ‘Pull that, pull that trigger back/ Lord, I can see, I can see darkness.’ In similar fashion, “Abe and Johnny,” a re-telling of Lincoln’s assassination, slowly introduces itself with repressed guitar chords and a hint of rhythm, never quite achieving lift-off but maintaining the mood.

“For the Broken Hearted” begins with some lonesome strumming and the desolate lines ‘Well in July you will find me out walking/ I’ll be hanging by the skin of my teeth/ to the memory of the woman I love.’ After trading verses, Wilson and Jensen come together to deliver the deathblow: ‘Alone, I am alone.’ It sums up Oh July nicely.
Scott Stapp
Proof of Life Wind-up Records 3/5 “I’m not evil – no matter what you think of me/ I’m just human – there’s a part of you that’s just like me.” So goes the opening lyric to former Creed lead singer Scott Stapp’s new album, Proof of Life. It’s the follow-up to 2005’s The Great Divide and the first release since last year’s tell-all memoir, Sinner’s Creed. Still in confessional mode, Stapp teeters dangerously on the edge of utter self-indulgence with Proof of Life – nearly every track details his descent into hell and back again. But while it’s never easy to empathize with a rock star, the album is almost saved by a couple of surprisingly heavy tracks that suit Stapp’s still-potent snarl. Lead single, “Slow Suicide,” would fit nicely on any Zakk Wylde-era Ozzy album. There’s a menacing tone previously missing from Creed and Stapp’s solo debut, but the chorus typically soars. “Who I Am” dispenses with melody all together and simply pile-drives its way from beginning to end. Sadly, the fun stops there. Stapp backloads the album with a series of ballads and mid-tempo songs that only magnify the clichéd lyrics about getting knocked down but vowing to fight on. “New Day Coming,” “What Would Love Do,” “Crash” and “Hit Me More,” in particular, all sound like hits but lack any real proof of rock.
Bone Cave Ballet
Will of the Waves Self-Released 4/5 As if Seattle hadn’t already produced more than enough great bands, the Emerald City can now add Bone Cave Ballet (BCB) to its resume. 2009’s The Echo of Entropy was a successful collaboration between vocalist Jacqui Gilroy and drummer Kelly Mynes, musically inventive and technically precise. But the recent additions of guitarist Jeff Blancato and bassist Ezekial Lords have turned a highly interesting art project into a fullfledged, progressive rock band with punk undertones. The comparisons to St. Vincent are unavoidable. Gilroy’s voice is equally compelling and malleable and the music shifts accordingly, guitars starting and stopping in metallic fits over hyperactive, jazz-based rhythms. Still, the five songs on Will of the Waves stand apart. Gilroy’s lyrics are wonderfully opaque; the titles alone are conversation pieces: “Breakup Yoga,” “Newton’s 3rd” and “Repression’s Estate” all challenge the norm. But it’s the imaginative chord structures and instrumental passages in songs like “Great Cycle” and “Shape to Stay” that elevate BCB above the indie-rock fray. The former drifts along peacefully before a mosh pit suddenly forms and beautiful chaos briefly ensues; the latter sounds like a French pop song interrupted periodically by Jethro Tull as a flute doubles the manic guitar line. If it all sounds a bit odd, that’s the point. Will of the Waves is willfully obtuse but endearingly so. —Thomas Ellis
cd sidebar Melvins
Tres Cabrones Ipecac Recordings
Original drummer Mike Dillard returns to join Melvins founders Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover for the band’s umpteenth album – most everyone has lost count at this point. What hasn’t been lost is the trademark sludge; Tres Cabrones is a typically enticing stew of metal (“Stump Farmer”) and sarcasm (“Tie My Pecker to a Tree”). Like AC/DC, Melvins are nothing if not consistent. And the good news is that the band’s Black Sabbath meets black comedy schtick hasn’t aged a bit.
Gungor
I Am Mountain Self-Released
Gungor is the husband and wife team of Michael and Lisa Gungor, a creative collective that draws comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and Arcade Fire. One listen to the title track makes this readily apparent; layers of instruments intertwine, build, fall away and begin the process again. The vocals are hushed – almost painfully reserved – before erupting into joyous celebration and then coming back down to earth. But, the best tracks like “Yesternite” and “Upside Down” stay grounded with a quiet elegance that lingers.
The Vim Dicta Von Tango EP PsychoGroove
One of LA’s best live bands, Vim Dicta finally has a studio recording t o d o c u m e n t th e “psychogroove” that fans have been freaking out about. Von Tango was produced by former John Lennon and Patti Smith engineer Shelly Yakus. He keeps it simple, capturing Vim Dicta’s fire on lead single, “Stallion,” a Hendrix-inspired rush of bluesy guitar wizardry that psychogrooves for six full minutes. “Name of the Game” brings the funk and “Point Blank” is the showpiece: a super slow-burn throwback to the 60’s.
