A quick note from the editor The buzz of activities around the tri-state always seems to soften a little bit during the month of August. There’s still plenty to do, but traditionally, it’s a bit of a grace period before the inevitable flurry of events scheduled in September every year. So, this is the perfect time to take stock of 2015 so far and shine a light on some of the tri-state’s most influential people with our 2nd Annual 20 40 and Under feature. Without question, it’s an incredibly diverse cast. From heads of charitable organizations to entrepreneurs and tattoo

artists, these movers and shakers represent the best that the area has to offer. Ideally, they’ll inspire others in the community to step up their game and make a difference, too. But back to August… You can catch the last night of the Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriters Festival, check out southern rockers Blackberry Smoke at the Victory or sample adult beverages at SWIRCA’s BrewFest just to name a few of the marquis events on tap. Plus, see What’s New in Western KY in our monthly Bluegrass report. All that and more inside! – TE

that made Holding All the Roses come together so well? Actually, the success from the previous album, The Whippoorwill, and everything that we were experiencing during that time – all that helped with the songwriting process. And then just life – I think as a songwriter, you write from personal experience whether it’s yours or something that you see happen to other people. And then when you run out of that, you make it up (laughs).

Blackberry Smoke Southern rockers from Georgia set to headline the Victory Theatre on August 14 Taking a break from the opening slot on the “Grooves & Gravy Tour” with rock legends ZZ Top, Blackberry Smoke will make a stop in Evansville for a full performance, playing tracks from their number one country album, Holding All the Roses, and much more. The band virtually lives on the road and is known for putting on one of the best shows around with an air-tight rhythm section courtesy of brothers Brit and Richard Turner.

I have to ask about “Yesterday’s Wine,” your collaboration with country legend George Jones. We were on tour – as usual – and I was speaking with (country artist) Jamey Johnson on the phone and we were talking about CMT Crossroads where they pair a rock and roll artist and a country artist. I said to him ‘we should go in and record George Jones’ “Yesterday’s Wine,” a favorite of ours – the George and Merle Lead singer Charlie Starrkindlyspokewith News4U about band misconceptions, hitting number one and singing with George Jones.

You’re often referred to as a country band – and in fact, you chart that way – but I don’t really hear it. We’ve always felt that we were just a rock and roll band from Georgia. I guess that my southern accent when singing and speaking makes people think that we’re a country band. When we play music together, it just sounds like it does. I think the lines are blurred more and more each year with what people consider to be country music. And no band is a better example than we are. At any point in the band’s career has a manager or label ever suggested that you change in some way for commercial purposes? Nobody has ever said anything like that, and if they had, we probably would have done it (laughs). No, I’m just joking. There are times that I have wondered why not – wondered why someone hasn’t suggested that we cut our hair or mention Skynyrd in a song. Of course, then we turn around and our newest album debuts at number one on the country charts. And it was in the top 20 on the rock charts as well. Either way, we don’t make a record to see how high it charts. It really is music for the fans and for us. Were there any particular circumstances

version is a classic, of course. So, we set up a day in Nashville to record it. The label that we were working with closely at the time also worked with George, and one of the guys said ‘hey, do you want him to sing on it?’ – which is a ridiculous question, because who wouldn’t? But lots of sh*t gets said every day in the music business, so we didn’t think too much about it. But then they called back when it got closer to the day and said ‘George will be there at 2 p.m.’ But it really didn’t mean anything until he walked in the door – literally, the best country singer in the history of country music. That was such a powerful moment. We had already tracked and sung the song and George walked in and said something that made me so proud – he said ‘damn, now that’s what country music should sound like.’ Then all three of us sang it again. As a fan, that was huge. The show starts at 8 p.m. For tickets, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. / 812-422-1515.

Posey Humane Society

Cool Cats & Dapper Dogs Benefit Auction Annual fundraiser for the PHS aims to keep the shelter up and running and the animals happy This year more than ever, the Posey Humane Society needs your support. Unfortunately, due to further incidents of animal neglect and hoarding, shelters around the tri-state are bursting at the seams and in even greater need than past years. You can do your part by attending PHS’s annual benefit auction, the major fundraiser for the organization that helps to defer the cost of food, bathing supplies, puppy and dog supplies and veterinary bills. This year’s theme is “Cool Cats & Dapper Dogs,” so get ready for an elegant affair and all-around delightful evening, including dinner catered by Hawg N Sauce. PHS is a small shelter that takes in owner surrendered and unwanted animals and is the only facility in Posey County that accepts cats. They rely mainly on public support, so please consider donating auction items, gift baskets, service items or a financial contribution. You can also sign up to be a sponsor for the event. Levels range from $100-$1000 and come with an increasing number of perks based on your commitment. Cool Cats & Dapper Dogs is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 at 5:30 p.m. in New Harmony (4-H Fairgrounds Community Center). Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the PHS, IGA or through any committee member. For more info or to reserve a table, email poseyhumane.org or contact Tina (812-8382779) or the shelter (812-838-3211).

Every summer, nearly 2000 people gather inside one of the most storied ballparks in America to taste some of the finest adult beverages around and listen to a great lineup of live music. BrewFest features over 300 craft beers, 50 wines and 20 spirits (includes bourbon, whiskey and vodka) and dozens of local gourmet culinary appetizers. hundreds of friends at Bosse Field while sampling an amazing selection of alcoholic drinks – with no worries about getting home safe. That’s right; Unity Taxi will provide free cab rides and act as your designated driver for the evening. And while the beverages are the main attraction at BrewFest, there’s plenty more on tap. Second Saturday Downtown Bar Tour Collaboration between Downtown Alliance and popular nightspots continues into August and beyond In a welcome display of partnership and community spirit, five of downtown Evansville’s busiest bars recently joined forces for a very special monthly tour in cooperation with the Downtown Alliance headed by director Joshua Armstrong. Second Saturday gives patrons the opportunity to enjoy the unique entertainment, décor and music on offer at Backstage Bar & Grill (524 Main St.), Bokeh Lounge (1007 Parrett St.), Boogie Nights and Ri Ra Irish Pub (both at 701 NW Riverside Dr.) and Someplace Else (930 Main St.) – all for just a $5 cover. With the purchase of a wristband, entry is allowed to all locations and includes free rides back and forth via a Pink Elephant Celebrations shuttle. Patrons can begin the tour at any bar. The Second Saturday Downtown Bar Tour was created based on joint marketing discussions between Armstrong, Backstage GM Shane Carey and Ri Ra GM Ryan Bodine. “We were throwing ideas onto the table, but kept coming back to getting folks from one bar to the next,” Armstrong said. “While the distance between the locations is walkable, once the Pink Elephant Celebrations shuttle was mentioned I knew I had to be part of the event.” The tour was launched in June. It continues on August 8 and on the second Saturday of each month thereafter. Thus far, Second Saturday has been a big hit, drawing more people downtown and introducing a whole new crowd to the burgeoning bar scene. Bodine, like all the business heads involved, couldn’t be happier with the tour. “I’m positively thrilled with the response to date for this event,” he said. “Everyone has loved having the ability to see and try new and different things all in one night!” The event begins at 9 p.m. and shuttle rides continue until 2 a.m. For info about each month’s event, follow the Evansville Downtown Alliance Facebook page.

Tri-Con 2015

Film and TV celebrities headline an action-packed convention for the fans, September 25-27 Tri-Con is not your average gathering of geeks and nerds. For starters, it was conceived by a diverse group of people (admitted geeks and nerds, yes) with many different interests, including gaming, sci-fi, anime and pop culture. Together, they have worked tirelessly to make Tri-Con the very best that it can be and bring the fans closer to the celebrities that they want to see. To that end, organizers have lined up numerous special guests for the three day convention such as esteemed actress Gigi Edgley (Farscape, Beastmaster) and actor/puppeteer Toby Philpot (Dark Crystal, Return of the Jedi, Labyrinth). Others scheduled to appear include actors Steve Cardenas (Red Ranger MMPR), Blake Foster (Blue Turbo Power Ranger) and Mike Edmonds (Star Wars Episode VI). Opportunities for signings, photo-ops and meet & greets will be available. But that’s just a taste of what Tri Con has in store for the fans. There will be plenty of action both inside AND outside the Holiday Inn on 41. On Friday evening, a Zombie Walk is planned – an undead tour of the hotel parking lot that will undoubtedly freak out drivers on the highway. Saturday, the much-anticipated Cosplay Contest will take place in the main events room. In addition, the Tri-State Game Trailer will be on site all weekend long plus look forward to lots of great vendors and artists on display in Exhibitor Hall. More events, programming and special guests are being added to the schedule, so be sure to check in at tri-con.net or follow them on Facebook. You can also post on their page and let them know what you’d like to see at Tri-Con. For tickets or to become a sponsor, visit tri-con.net. The Holiday Inn Airport is located at 7101 Hwy 41 N. / 812-867-7999.

Barbara Allender

Cindy Karges

Terminal Blues Cancer Benefit

Area bands to unite at Howell Park in support of vocalist/bassist Cindy Karges One of the tri-state’s most talented musicians needs your help. Cindy Karges, a member of The M.A.D. (Mothers and Daughters) Women Band, has been fighting cancer and struggling to keep up with all of the medical bills. Through it all, she has maintained a great attitude, continuing to work on music and doing her best to maintain a sense of normalcy. So, it’s only fitting that a number of area bands are coming together to honor Karges and her ongoing battle. On August 23, The M.A.D. Women Band (Karges on bass with guitarist Barbara Allender, lead vocalist Amy Jo Madden and drummer Julie Michaels) will perform along with other local acts at Howell Park as part of the Terminal Blues Cancer Benefit. Look forward to a great mix of blues, country and rock over the course of a beautiful summer afternoon – six full hours of entertainment. But most importantly, the money raised will help to defer the cost of Karges’ treatment and brighten her outlook. As noted before, Karges continues to be creative. In fact, she just released Terminal Blues, a new CD featuring covers of her favorite blues songs. With Karges on vocals and a fantastic lineup of local musicians on board, the collection is every bit as remarkable as the talent involved. Be sure to inquire about the CD when you arrive at Howell Park. Come on out for the Terminal Blues Cancer Benefit on August 23 and show your support for Cindy as she continues her fight. Howell Park is located at Broadway and Tekoppel Avenues in Evansville. For more info, email Barbara at picwrite@yahoo.com or call Cindy at 812-306-1912.

Your Back-to-School Beauty & Life Guide by Dakyissa Hall Ask the Pastor with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

What do you think about same sex marriage?

Lots of people, far more intelligent and articulate than me, have weighed in on this subject. Because I am not a literalist, not a fundamentalist, and try not to judge anyone, my personal opinion is simply that the Bible challenges us to think deeply. The first question that has to be addressed is simply, “is it okay to be gay?” I know the six passages that are quoted to be anti-gay. But, for me (and for many Christians) the Word of God is Jesus Christ. And what did Jesus say about homosexuality? Nothing. Some argue that same-sex couples can’t have children. That statement is correct biologically. However, I know plenty of same-sex couples who have adopted and fostered children and given them the home they needed and otherwise might not have had. These children are blessed by love, acceptance, and understanding. If marriage is only about making babies, we have a very shallow definition of marriage. If marriage is about two people living in faithful commitment to each other, entering into a new way of life, celebrating the joys and sharing the tears of life, easing one another’s burdens, and being the people God created them to be, then same-sex marriage should be recognized for what it is: authentic marriage. That’s how I see it. I’d love to hear your questions for future columns. Drop me an email: kevin @firstpresevansville.com. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. in Evansville / 812-423-6297

1. Organize or create your beauty kit. Remember, your skin care products should be suitable for your skin type. Be sure your system includes a cleanser, exfoliant, toner, and moisturizer. Your makeup should include products for everyday wear and special occasions. For everyday eye shadows, you’ll want to have a skin tone color - one shade lighter and one shade darker. For special occasions, black, deep brown, and gray are great colors to keep.

3. Develop a daily routine. This should include things you will typically do each day, including cleanse your skin, eat breakfast, workout, and go to class. Personally, I prefer to create daily schedules for myself. Here’s a glimpse at how I organize my schedule: 7:00 am – Wakeup/Give Thanks 7:30am – Breakfast/Devotion 8:30 am – Workout/Me Time 9:00 am – Get Ready for Day (Skin Care, Makeup, Wardrobe) 10:00 am – Work 4:00 pm – Prepare Meal 5:00 pm – Meal/Time with Fiancé 9:00 pm – Devotion/Prayer 4. Create a vision board. Maybe your goal is making all A’s. Maybe you really want to land a great internship. Maybe you just want to look and feel beautiful everyday. Well, a vision board will help you stay on track and motivated. All you need are a poster board, scissors, and glue. Then, start looking through magazines or online for pictures and quotes to put on your board. Hang your vision board on a wall where you can see it daily. If you have issues getting started, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

2. Review your wardrobe. Does your wardrobe represent who you are? Years ago, I heard Oprah say, “If you stay ready, you’ll never have to get ready!” I couldn’t agree more with that quote. You never know who you will meet or where life is leading you. Putting an effort into your wardrobe will help ensure you are representing yourself well. If you’re not sure how to choose wardrobe, begin by taking a look at your lifestyle. What kind of image does your lifestyle demand? Here are a few good pieces to keep on hand: boot cut jeans, slacks, khakis, blazers, blouses, cardigans, basic black/brown pump, and knee length skirts.

a. What is my purpose in life? b. What tasks are ahead of me this year? c. What goals need to be set? d. What makes me happy? e. What does the future hold for me? Well beauties, that’s it for now. I hope these tips add value to your life. I will be praying for you to have a great school year! Don’t forget, if you or someone you know (ages 13+) needs more assistance with beauty or life, feel free to visit yourbeautydate.com. Until next time, Stay Beautiful, Stay Positive, & Stay Strong! Your Beauty and Life Coach, Dakyissa

Pizza King Deluxe Stromboli

You’d be hard-pressed to find a local who’s never enjoyed Pizza King. An Evansville staple with several locations, they feed the masses with some of the heartiest, cheesiest creations around. PK is not just the king of pizzas, however- their stroms are zesty monstrosities that dominate competitors. These “World Famous” sandwiches are not for the faint of appetite, but feel free to share with a friend- they’ll thank you. Served on toasted-to-perfection specialty “Vienna” (French-style) loaf, the Deluxe Stromboli is stacked with spicy ground sausage and pepperoni, crunchy peppers and onions, mushrooms, and no lack of their own gooey mozzarella-herb blend. Of course, what pulls the whole thing together is the sauce- tangy, sweet, bursting with flavor, it’s worth the mess. Pair it with an frosty beer, and it’s sandwich nirvana. But hey, don’t take our word for it- do yourself a favor and check them out. Don’t want to leave your house? No worries, they’ll bring it right to your door, so you can feel like king too.

Sportsman’s Grille & Billiards Buffalo Chicken Sandwich

With stiff drinks, excellent food, pool tables for days, and hopping nightlife, affectionately known by most locals as “Sports,” this Franklin Street juggernaut is a guaranteed good time. Catering to business folks and regulars by day and a dedicated mix of patrons and pool sharks by night, it should come as no surprise that this is the place to be. A recent claim that “to eat is necessity but to drink at Sportsman’s is art” is accurate for sure, but their food is every bit as amazing as their way with a beverage, particularly the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Available grilled or fried, this monster will set your appetite on fire if you so choose and leave you satisfied. Tender chicken is tossed in your choice of in-house buffalo sauce and dressed with all of the trimmings unless you’re not into that sort of thing. Smothered with ranch to cut the heat and situated on a fresh bun, it’s a meal in itself, but don’t skimp on their crispy, golden French fries or a cold brew while shooting a game of pool with buddies.

Hawg ‘N’ Sauce

Smoked Beef Brisket Sandwich Hawg ‘N’ Sauce is a locally-owned place you can go and know that you can enjoy all things BBQ. Relatively new and just down the road in Mt. Vernon, Hawg’s also offers catering, local and national live music, and outdoor seating. After cooking for fundraisers, the Schelhorns decided to start a business, and we’re glad they did. From fresh salads to wraps to fall-off-the-bone ribs, creative spuds, and desserts such as Kentucky Southern Pie, they have it all covered. Now let’s talk about their sandwich, the Smoked Beef Brisket. The time and labor it takes to make brisket is intense, but when done right, it’s one of the juiciest, flavorful cuts of meat. Hawg’s does it like champs. Of course, their BBQ sauce is the perfect addition, smoky and sweet, and as if that’s not enough to convinve you, it’s served on Texas Toast with pickle, onion and your choice of delicious sides such as sweet potato fries. Among all of the other filling and affordable menu items, this one is a steal. Don’t stop there, however, because it’s said they have the “best butts in town.”

Bar Louie

Sesame Tuna Sandwich When Bar Louie came to Evansville, we got a taste of something a bit different. Known for their hip ambiance, decadent cocktails, Sunday brunch, and amazing happy hour specials, Louie also has an extensive menu full of both traditional bar fare like chicken nachos and entrees such as Panko Sesame Fish Skewers for the more adventurous foodie. Their winning sandwich is the Sesame Tuna. Quality ahi tuna steak encrusted in sesame is served on a soft, buttery brioche bun with crisp romaine lettuce, tomato, fresh avocado, and Louie’s own special ginger mayo. As a healthier choice, this sandwich is an explosion of flavor with a family of textures that will leave you wanting more. Add loaded (queso, spicy giardiniera, bacon, green onions) tots or fries and you’re set. The whole family is welcome, but the menu jokingly states that “unattended children will be given espresso and a free kitten,” so beware! Not really, though, unless you’re wary of a good time.

Penny Lane Dazed & Confused

Evansville’s most happening coffeehouse offers so much more than coffee, adding culture, community, and a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere for everyone. One can be sure to be greeted with a genuine smile, and diehard regulars are there every day, whether it’s for a tasty drink, lunch, breakfast, live music, art, work, or conversation with good folks. Besides the perfect summer iced coffee and locally made pastries, Penny Lane also offers a menu of build-your-own and film-themed specialty “sammiches.” A great movie and delicious sandwich, it’s the Dazed & Confused for the win. Smoked ham and turkey are piled high with crunchy banana peppers for a kick, and tangy swiss cheese and queso spread on a chewy ciabatta roll. An original adventure in taste, this “sammich” can only be improved upon by adding a side of potato salad and PL’s famous smoothie, the Dirty Hippie, a health-conscious and fresh creation of fruit, juice, and soy milk. Grab a couch and enjoy the many reasons why Penny Lane IS Evansville.

Lyle’s Sportszone Loaded Stromboli Step into a baseball fan’s dream (Yankees specifically) and meet the mustachioed Lyle, a present and jovial connoiseur of good times and great food. Besides the company, sports, delicious menu and full bar, Sportszone offers live music, karaoke, and billiards. You can find many enticing items on the menu, which is decorated with a caricature of Lyle himself, and although everything is worth a try, their best sellers are Lyle’s All Star Strombolis. With 7 of these bad boys to choose from, why not just start at the top with the Loaded Stromboli? Pick your spice level and enjoy their “Strom meat” (secret recipe), pepperoni, onion, mushroom, green peppers, tomatoes, mouthwatering sauce, more secret spices, and a heavy-handed dose of mozzarella cheese. A hot butter-brushed roll is the vehicle for these amazing ingredients, and the recipe is almost 40 years old, developed to perfection. Grab a large stack of napkins, and put another menu item on deck, because you’ll be back.

Home of the Creolespiced, upside-down “Nameless Pizza,” it’s a cool spot with bike nights on Wednesdays until September, TVs and outdoor seating. Now, when it comes to Stromboli, you may think you know what’s up, but chances are, you don’t know about this one, unless, of course, you’ve tried it. In that case, high five, because you’re living life right. Assuming it’s named after the fictional 60’s film about the World War 2 German warship, Sink the Bismarck (The Bomb Strom) is an apt title. Translation: this sandwich is not for the faint of appetite; it’s got an incredible kick and a totally fresh take on your typical Strom. Of course, it seems standard at first glance, with crumbled sausage, pepperoni, loads of melted mozzarella cheese, awesome pizza sauce, and onions, but that’s when tradition goes out the window. We are so okay with it, because who doesn’t want spicy jalapenos, sauerkraut (thanks, Germany), and a side of spicy mustard with their Stromboli? Bomb, indeed. Cruise up First Avenue to Mill Road and visit the Rounders family. Just don’t forget to say “danke” for that Strom.

Archie & Clyde’s Danny’s Deli Famous Gyro

The newer Newburgh favorite, Archie & Clyde’s, is a great place for parties, family fun, and an eclectic menu full of yummy dishes such as pizza and paninis. Stop in and enjoy a craft brew or swing by after ordering online. In addition to their pizza, we’ve fallen in love with another item in particular. Prepare for dancing taste buds and a swift return to enjoy it again. Drum roll, please... check out Danny’s Deli Famous Gyro, an institution among sandwiches. A Greek favorite, this small town restaurant’s version has big city flavor. First of all, the seasoned beef and lamb meat combination are in perfect proportion to the rest of this gargantuan work of art. Besides the hearty dose of broiled, juicy meat, the Tzatziki (yogurt/ cucumber sauce with dill and lemon) is to die for, and onion, tomato, and lettuce give the warm pita-encased sandwich the crunch it needs to achieve perfection. Treat yourself with no regrets and a happy belly.

Dave’s Sports Den Italian Beef

Home vibe and bar food at its finest, Dave’s Sports Den is always hopping with locals seeking the full experience, and Dave and the crew are there to serve it. Whether you are stopping in to catch your favorite sports team duke it out, grabbing a brew with friends for happy hour, singing karaoke, rubbing elbows with regulars, or satisfying your growling stomach, Dave’s should definitely be at the top of your hangout list. Pizza, wings, fried appetizers, and a cornucopia of sandwiches govern their menu, but more outside of the box is their Italian Beef. It’s fall-apart pot roast, simmered to perfection while still maintaining its form on toasted bread made in-house. Heaped with melted mozzarella cheese, crisp pepperoncini peppers, and served with au Jus (juices from the meat itself blended with spices), this sandwich is sure to end your hunger and bring you back to Dave’s. You may just fall in love, and although you can’t marry a sandwich, you can have it catered to your special event or party.

Flames Grill Catfish Sandwich

When planning an outing to find something fresh, tried, and true, don’t forget about Flames Grille on Columbia Avenue. Back in action and ready to please, they promise a “burning passion for flavor.” We’ve already told you about their fall-off-the-bone ribs, mouth-watering pork chops, and the incomparable Dark Danielle roast beef sandwich, lovingly named after Chef John Scott’s wife. Not to be outdone, their Catfish Sandwich is absolutely winning. Fried to perfection, this breaded masterpiece is not lacking in freshness, flavor, portion, or presentation. The melt-in-your-mouth fish is flaky and moist on the inside, with a bit of spice in the crunchy breading and served on a warm, toasted bun. Add homemade tartar sauce, tart pickles, and a side of John’s own creamy coleslaw, and it’s a date. You’ll definitely want a second date, and don’t be afraid to ask, because the man on the scene has one request - “Let us cater your next event, at your place or ours.”

Hagedorns Tavern Brain Sandwich The Franklin Street powerhouse known as Hagedorns has been taking care of locals for 90 years now. Once a home (built in the late 1800’s), then an inn, regardless of the many hats it has worn, food has always been at the heart of this local favorite. They boast breakfast, a full bar, a family room for the kiddos, plate lunches, hospitality and much more. Burgers and barbeque are available, but the German-American influence on the menu is what sets them apart, with choices like livers. And for those who are food-venturous or for the many locals who grew up eating them, Hagedorns offers a Brain Sandwich. It’s not your typical menu item, but people definitely flock to enjoy this rare, awesome treat. Encased in a crunchy amount of special batter, the brain is then deep-fried and served on bread with the crunch of pickle. Both traditional yet inventive, this sandwich is a masterpiece. At least think about it (pun intended).

Theophilus Akai Guitarist for Osiella/20 40 & Under Member 1.

Greatest guitarist of all time… Man, that’s a hard one! Derek Trucks. He makes the guitar really speak. His choices are soulful and precisely imprecise at times which makes him unique. He is also a slide god!

2.

Best way to kill time on the road… Read Star Wars books and watch YouTube videos of kids that are better at guitar than me.

3.

Ways that I annoy my bandmates… Getting us lost on road trips.

4.

Instrument(s) I can play besides guitar… Bass, mandolin - if it’s got strings I’ll try and figure it out.

5.

Best Osiella show to date… A show we played in Philadelphia at a punk dive. Behind us on stage was an upside-down cross so I had my assumptions about the type of folks there. Turned out to be an awesome show and the people were nothing but nice and receptive!

6.

Preferred format: CDs, digital or vinyl… CDs for sure. I still love the booklets and info you can get about artists.

7.

A band that should not exist… Hootie and The Blowfish. They creep me out. Lol.

8.

T or F: I refer to my guitar as my “axe”… True - sometimes. Haha. I hate saying it, though.

9.

Number of autographs I’ve signed… I’m not sure. I’m not that big into doing it. I’d rather just take a silly pic.

10. Best concert I’ve ever seen... An Oliver Mtukudzi show. He’s from Malawi and his music speaks to me. Being African myself, I felt a deep connection to the instruments and styles of music at that show. Barely any English was spoken which was awesome! 11. A city I wish Osiella would play… Sydney, Australia 12. The songwriting process is… Literally, I take my phone to the shower with me because that’s where I compose the most. I hear a beat or guitar arrangement in my head and then I beat box it into my phone. Dry or not dry, it seems to work. I then take it to Cynthia, and she creates the lyrics. The rest just comes naturally. 13. Pre-show ritual(s)… I do finger exercises. Haha. I also pray for the band and the crowd. 14. Funniest member of Osiella… Our drummer, Dekar Baker. He’s outlandish and he needs help. Lol. 15. Music magazine I’d like to be on the cover of… Vibe! They incorporate a lot of minorities and ethnic artists. It would just feel right. 16. What I think about when I’m on stage… How can we tweak a song to make it better? How I can manage to accept all these free drinks and not actually drink them? And food. 17. Guitar solos: cool or unnecessary?… They are cool! Sometimes over the top and too long. I’m guilty of that. Haha. Still learning how to reel myself in when I get to turn up. 18. The first time I heard Osiella on the radio… We were headed to Nashville for an open mic. I heard us on 91.5 and Sir Paul Mattingly was hosting! Loved every bit of it! 19. Age I started playing guitar... I was 14. I had been a violinist for 4 years prior, but I hated it. I started playing Red Hot hilli peppers music on the violin and that’s when I knew I had to get an electric guitar. 20. What the future holds for Osiella... Keep writing and performing! Our songs will make someone’s day!

What’s Cookin’

Brick Pizzeria

101 NW 1st St. Suite 114, Evansville • 812-602-3035

A

recent addition to the ever-growing downtown scene, Brick Pizzeria offers delicious, homemade pizzas and a whole lot more. Owners Preston Walker and Randy “The Pizza Carpenter” Dunn have carved out their own little dream joint seconds from the riverfront in the old Post Office Plaza. Beaming, helpful faces and mouth-watering scents greeted me at the door, so I situated myself in a booth by the window, taking in the minimal pizza shop photography adorning the walls and murals on the bar front. It comes as no surprise that Dunn has ventured out on his own; he’s been in the pizza business for 18 years, weaving his way through other favorite local establishments before opening Brick with Walker in April of this year. With times changing and people paying more attention to what they put into their bodies,

it’s refreshing to learn that a restaurant cares what they’re serving customers. Besides every dish offered being handmade from an original recipe, Brick doesn’t skimp on the details. Salad bar items and toppings are purchased from the downtown farmers market and an organic farm on the west side of Evansville, and they only use grass-fed Wisconsin cheese. It’s a difference I could both see and taste.

mozzarella/provolone mixture. For a sweet finish, I was served cannoli, made by Walker, who claims “I’ve had Italians try my cannoli and like it better.” The pastry, filled with a fluffy custard and wrapped in a crispy shell with a hint of cinnamon and bits of chocolate, was decorated with cherries. I’m not Italian, but I’ve tasted my fair share of cannolis, and Walker’s claim is not unfounded.

Of course, I enjoyed a slice of pepperoni, with melted cheese and a chewy in-house crust. The sauce was distinctive, sweeter than I expected and not slathered on like some shops do. By the slice or whole, the portions and taste are a bang for your buck. Next, I fell in love with their take on Rigatoni Carbonara - bacon (of course), fresh mushrooms, red onions, fresh grated parmesan and secret recipe Alfredo, topped with their own

Catering to the late risers and business crowd, Brick Pizzeria is open Mon-Wed from 11-6 p.m., Thurs & Fri from 11-8 p.m., and Saturdays from noon until 6 p.m. They offer city-wide delivery, online ordering, and may surprise us from time to time with plate lunch specials, so be sure to follow them on Facebook. Pop in and see why Brick Pizzeria will having you exclaiming “Mamma Mia!” - Whitney Patterson

August Craft Beer of the Month: Three Floyds Gumballhead

Three Floyds is one of the top craft beer breweries in the country. The brewery is located in Munster, IN just south of Chicago. Three Floyds is well known in the mid-western states, but it seems as if their products are extremely hard to get. That is true, and they don’t seem to mind at all that you can’t find their products all over town. This is done on purpose by the brewery. They create such great beer that they want their customers to keep wanting more and more. Gumballhead is the beer that seems to have done that. How many of you have gone out looking for this well-crafted beer and couldn’t find it anywhere? Guess what? You’re not alone. Local pubs want this beer which is brewed with red wheat and boatloads of Amarillo hops that give this summer brew a lemony finish. The slight haze in the glass is from yeast that is added for a secondary fermentation. Gumballhead is a wheat beer with 35 IBUs and a 5.6% ABV. I have good news for those that are constantly looking for Gumballhead. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s has it. Yes, we have Gumballhead; not just this month, but every month. Beef’s usually has at least two Three Floyds taps on at all times - sometimes three taps. If you are a Three Floyds fan and looking to get the best they have to offer, you need to come to Beef’s and check out the selection. With football season just around the corner, and with fantasy football draft parties being scheduled, Beef’s is offering a special to anyone who wants to schedule their draft party. Give us a call at 812-4909464 to schedule your fantasy draft party. Tell us you read this in the Tap Talk section and get a free Combo Appetizer to share with your fellow fantasy football players. Also, Beef’s is looking for the best of the best servers in the tristate area. If you are looking for a serving job then go to beefobradys.com and fill out the application.

Western KY 20 40 & Under Members The votes are in for the 2015 N4U 20 40 & Under and two of western KY’s finest made the cut. Friday After 5 Chairman Andrew Howard and blues phenom Boscoe France have both contributed significantly to the cultural development of the area, particularly in terms of the burgeoning entertainment scene. Though Howard and France come from very different backgrounds – and one of them rarely wears shoes – there’s a shared desire to keep expanding the musical landscape and shine a light on the incredible talent that western KY has to offer. You simply won’t find two more deserving members of the Bluegrass community to be part of this year’s 20 40 & Under.

Andrew Howard A Commercial Loan Officer with Independence Bank in Owensboro, Howard is heavily involved within the community, particularly as one of the prime decision makers for the hugely popular Friday After Five summer concert series that offers up to six music and entertainment venues each Friday night on the newly renovated downtown riverfront. He also serves as Treasurer of the Home Builders Association of Owensboro, Board Member at the Owensboro Family YMCA, Board Member of the Brescia University Alumni Association and is a 2014 inductee to the Brescia University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Boscoe France One of the most talented musicians in the nation, Madisonville’s Boscoe France won the 2012 Guitar Center Battle of the Blues Competition, out-playing 4,000 contestants from all over the U.S. He’s shared the stage with B.B. King among other legends and was recently the subject of an award-winning documentary, Shoeless Blues: The Journey of Boscoe France which has played on PBS stations in numerous states. France regularly plays at the top venues in the region and always draws a big crowd eager to catch a set of his blistering blues and incredible guitar chops. He continues to blaze a musical trail for the area’s talented performers to follow.

New regional provider serving as the area’s destination for all live entertainment ticketing and event registration needs Powered by Spectra Ticketing & Fan Engagement, Owensboro Tickets is streamlining the process of ticket buying in downtown Owensboro and the general western Kentucky area, making it much easier and more affordable to see great shows and attend any number of marquis events. Services are available at OwensboroTickets.com to both RiverPark Center and the Owensboro Convention Center this summer with more partnerships in the works. This local, integrated ticketing platform will unite the region’s venues, festivals and attractions in a new and exciting way that will ultimately benefit the fans who work hard to be able to attend their favorite concerts and more. “It’s exciting to partner with Spectra Ticketing & Fan engagement to build a local service with low fees, a downtown box office, an easy-to-navigate website and a subscription service,” said Dean Dennis, General Manager of the OCC. “On average, about half of the tickets for any live entertainment event go unsold, with customers citing awareness, ease of

purchase and price as the main reasons they don’t attend an event. Our services and new partnership will help solve a number of these issues.” As an added bonus, Owensboro Tickets will offer partner services such as ticket

printing, advanced internet and phone ticket sales, ticket mailing and event registration. For once, here’s a ticket system that is working to enhance the

fans’ experience rather than cause endless headaches and make you want to avoid the whole process of ticket buying all together. Plus, this new system will keep you in the loop and more informed about the entertainment opportunities in the region. “The real key is the exposure we will provide events via each individually branded website and through email and social marketing services,” added Dennis. Speaking of Dennis and the OCC, be sure to check out their weekly “Party at the Pier” on the back terrace as part of the Friday After Five summer concert series. In addition to a great lineup of live music, there’s a tiki bar and tiki garden (where you are encouraged to take a “tiki selfie”) to create just the right atmosphere for a fun Friday night out in Owensboro. As expected, everyone had a blast at the second annual 4th Fest @ The Pier. People of all ages poured into the OCC to enjoy the celebration which included a fireworks display and plenty of fun activities for the whole family, including free games and prizes, bounce houses and face painting plus a delicious all-American menu: hamburgers, hotdogs, corn on the cob, potato salad, desserts and more! To keep up with all the action at the OCC, visit owenborocenter.com.

First Annual Autumn Classic Inaugural fitness event a win-win for both the participants and the community

Kentucky State Fair Get ready for 11 days of good times at one of the oldest and largest state fairs in the country

Striving to bring an awareness of the connection between health and physical activity, fitness team 2 Moms N Motion invite you to join them for a very special run/walk through beautiful Sandy Lee Watkins Park on September 12. Sharon Carver and Lyndsey Estes – both extremely active and motivated mothers on a mission to get people in the community moving and achieving great things – have donated their funds and time to make the Autumn Classic a reality. The event will cover up to 10K of paths within the park and a portion of the proceeds will go towards developing a nature trail to further encourage exploration. People of all ages are encouraged to participate!

With a rich history stretching back nearly 200 years, the Kentucky State Fair is an annual summer tradition that draws over half a million fairgoers from around the tri-state and beyond. Beginning August 20, the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville will host another amazing week and a half of family-friendly activities and big name music concerts plus a whole lot of food and pageantry. The most popular event is the renowned World’s Championship Horse Show, where riders and spectators from all over the world can enjoy the beauty and strength of over 2,000 saddlebreds in Freedom Hall. Besides the fierce competition and agricultural events, there are main-stage concerts featuring national acts such as Meghan Trainor and Aretha Franklin, and lawn concerts every day, boasting the likes of Charlie Daniels and Joan Jett. Get your thrills on the midway rides, which are unlimited with a daily wristband. And of course, with any fair, food is a huge draw, with cooking contests and an endless assortment of treats paired with local brews and Kentucky bourbon. For pageant goers, check out the Little Miss & Mister competition and energetic Cheer & Dance Championship. A fantastic event for the whole family, the KSF should not be missed, so grab your derby hats and enjoy! - Whitney Patterson The KSF runs from August 20-30. For a complete list of ticket prices, events, maps, and descriptions, visit kystatefair.org and follow them on Facebook.

Carver and Estes each sport an impressive fitness resume. These two moms in motion not only work as personal trainers but also thrive on competition. Between them, they have run multiple marathons and completed several Tough Mudder courses. For Estes, staying fit is the key to being the best person she can be. “If by keeping active I can better play with my children, more easily pack in groceries and feel comfortable in my own body, then it’s worth all the effort. As trainers, we want to encourage our clients to be an active participant in their own life – to laugh, have fun and feel good! Participating in the Autumn Classic is a great opportunity to meet new friends, get involved in our beautiful community and to accomplish an admirable fitness goal.” *2 Moms N Motion are starting a free run/training program on Tuesday mornings from 5:15-5:45 a.m. at the Henderson County Fairgrounds. Sponsorship and vending opportunities are available for the race. For more info, visit 2MomsNMotion.rocks. A Simple Path Local nonprofit provides much more than delicious food to surrounding community

All of us who work, serve, study and train at A Simple Path struggle under conditions of homelessness in and around the city. It is our belief that our shared effort to feed our neighbors can, in turn, lead to a greater awareness about the conditions of poverty that we experience every day. Of course, we benefit from the training and practical knowledge that come with working in a restaurant kitchen, but the greater take-away is in the personal transactions that we get to have with our patrons and each other. Food brings us together here at A Simple Path, but it also gives us the ability to showcase for Owensboro’s more fortunate residents what the homeless CAN do. For us, it’s not about “getting a job” in order to become somehow upwardly mobile. Rather, it’s about developing a community that can help all of us cope with lifetimes of abuse and suffering. We create food together and serve it to our friends here in Owensboro in order that they might set their misconceptions aside and truly learn something about what it actually means to be poor yet still full of faith, love, value, and fellowship. We hope you’ll join us soon for our Friday lunch service, which always starts at 11:30 a.m. We are proud of what we cook, grateful for what we have, and hopeful of what we can change together. - Kimberly Jagoe, A Simple Path A Simple Path is located in the basement of New Life Church, 400 Crabtree Ave. in Owensboro.

music Josh Merritt

T

o understand the appeal of Owensboro musician Josh Merritt, you simply need to spend a few minutes shooting the breeze with him. He’s got a way of putting people at ease in conversation with his big smile and small town sincerity not to mention unmistakable laugh. In short, this gregarious country artist with a singersongwriter mentality has that elusive X-factor that separates entertainers from the pack – something that’s immediately apparent when he takes the stage. What makes his comfort with performing even more impressive is the relatively short time Merritt has been in the game. In just four years, the 25-year-old has graduated from a self-described “domesticated” existence to life as a full-time musician. “I lived out in Whitesville, Ky for a little while and was working a great day job – but it just didn’t feel right,” he says. “When I turned 21 I knew I could start playing out, so I started

going to open mics around Owensboro specifically, Andy Brasher’s open mic at the Boiler Room. Since then I’ve been on a fast rollercoaster ride.” Brasher is actually Merritt’s second cousin and usually the first person that the upand-comer goes to for advice and a helping hand. His frequent calls to bar and venue owners recommending Merritt for gigs have been greatly appreciated. “He has

had a lot to do with my success just for the simple fact that when you first start out and nobody knows who you are, it’s tough to get shows,” Merritt explains. Initially, like most young performers, Merritt played a lot of covers, falling back on his Bluegrass upbringing – particularly Bill Monroe and family favorite, New Grass Revival. He played when and where he could and even teamed up with fellow Owensboro musician Jarrod Green for a package tour in the Florida Keys. These early experiences gave Merritt the confidence to take the next obvious step. “I realized that I wanted to do my own stuff and started the first level of the Josh Merritt Band,” he says. “Ever since then, we’ve tried to incorporate originals into the set.” One of those originals, “As Long As It’s With You,” made a big impact in Owensboro, receiving airplay on WBKR. The song’s folk approach – almost Americana in feel – set it apart from current country trends and ultimately helped Merritt to win the Battle for the Big O competition. His moving performance of the song earned him the right to open one of the biggest festivals in the region, warming up the crowd for such stars as Charlie Daniels and Hank Williams, Jr. Not surprisingly, doors started opening. Merritt now plays as many as seven shows a week at various tristate venues. He’s got an album in the works and a summer tour with Evansville’s Osiella on the schedule. Ideally, he’d like the studio and live endeavors to complement each other. “A song doesn’t get personal for someone until they play it on their iPod or stereo at home – that’s when it connects. Then they start coming out to the shows and singing every word.” For more info, visit joshmerritt.com.

What’s Cookin’

Old Hickory Bar-B-Q

338 Washington Ave., Owensboro • 270-926-9000

S

ince 1918, the Foreman family has been serving their tantalizing, award-winning Old Hickory barbeque to patrons from all over the world. In the lobby is proof - a world map hangs on the wall adorned with pins from almost every country, and as far as the tri-state goes, it’s obvious that people are more than willing to make the drive to enjoy such famous fare. Bright, open, and cozy, the current restaurant is the third Old Hickory location after moving from their Frederica building when the streets were still unpaved. Upon arrival, it is apparent that tradition, fresh ingredients, and pride are important values for the Old Hickory crew. Bring your appetite, but don’t worry about having a fat wallet - portions are generous and prices are completely reasonable, especially considering the time and effort that goes into their homemade menu.

Manager Keith Cook knew exactly what to feed me to ensure my return. Mutton (sheep meat) was a first for me, but I kept an open mind and was richly rewarded. The tender chopped meat and tangy, secret-recipe sauce made for one of the best BBQ sandwiches I’ve ever tasted. Of course, Old Hickory is known for their mutton, raised locally, fresh and never frozen, which is obvious in flavor and texture. Paired with a cup of spicy burgoo, a hearty stew of vegetables and an assortment of fresh meats, this first meal sealed the deal. Next up was a traditional BBQ staple - pork ribs. Any fear of getting messy or eating with one’s hands should go out the window after the first bite. Easily pulled off of the bone and bursting with flavor, Old Hickory’s ribs are a step above the rest. For my sides I chose dailymade creamy coleslaw, a light and crunchy

concoction, and their macaroni and cheese, a stand-alone classic which I polished off before going back to anything else despite my near-full stomach. Finally, I was greeted with banana pudding, a sweet finish to a soul-satisfying meal. Piled high, the wafers were crunchy, folded into the smooth pudding and topped with fresh banana bits, airy whipped cream, and a rush of sweet childhood memories. Perfect for your catering needs or parties, Old Hickory is committed to providing the ultimate BBQ experience and so much more with recipes and practices that haven’t changed in nearly a century. - Whitney Patterson Business hours: Sun-Thurs 9am-9pm; FriSat 9am-10pm. Taylor’s Tavern Backyard Cookoff For the fifth year running, one of Owensboro’s favorite hangouts is throwing an all day (and night) party with plenty of food, fun and live music on August 22

10 QUESTIONS for

Mallory Majors

Community Services Librarian Henderson County Public Library

The Taylor Tavern Backyard Cookoff is a summer tradition that just keeps getting bigger and better every year with more cash and prizes up for grabs as teams vie for points based on the presentation, tenderness and taste of their pork butt, ribs, chicken and more. The competition is guaranteed to get heated with so much on the line and so many talented cooks joining forces to produce such delicious food. Of course, the real winners are all the people who show up for a great day of music and fun and get to enjoy the fruits of the competing teams’ labor – or flavorful meats, more precisely.

1. Best book I’ve read this year... In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick. It’s almost always true that the best stories are nonfiction! Plus, I’ve recently accepted that it’s OK to hate - or not even finish - a boring book. “Ain’t nobody got time fa dat.” Oh, and Chris Hemsworth is starring in the movie adaption, so there’s that, too. 2. My athletic abilities are… Limited in scope, but unparalleled in greatness. Raising a four-year old heathen has developed my upper body strength, balance, and speed. I can carry many items in one trip and I also take pride in my mommy dance moves. 3. A book that would make a great film... Bright’s Passage by Josh Ritter. The story is totally surreal, yet it has all of the core elements of a great romance, war story, and crime thriller! Think WWI Forrest Gump with less laughs, more tears, and all the feels. 4. Last time I used the Dewey Decimal System... Erryday! DDC for life! On average, we add 450 items to the HCPL collection each week, so organization is key. Our tech services staff are the hardest working women in the cataloging business. 5. A local place I keep meaning to check out... The new location of Knight’s Comics & Games in Eastgate Shopping Center (Henderson, KY). HCPL has developed a ton of new programming designed to promote the brain benefits of gaming. Plus, our Summer Reading Program theme is “Every Hero Has A Story.” Knight’s took part in our 110th Anniversary Celebration last summer and I see potential for future partnerships. 6. How to get kids excited about reading… Few things build confidence more than reading. Kids who read, especially the kids who struggle to read, learn to recognize challenges and develop ways to overcome them. That’s such an important part of growing up into a well-adjusted, functional adult. Empowering young people with choices makes reading exciting, too. Don’t want to crack a book? K, you can download an animated picture book, listen to an e-audiobook on your mobile device, or checkout a magazine or graphic novel. 7. Best thing that’s happened to me so far in 2015... The best is always yet to come! Highlights thus far include the success of Passport Services at HCPL and a huge bump in media coverage, especially when it comes to our teen programs (thanks News 4 U). I’m sure I’ll have many more blessings to count before this year is over.

So come on out and spend the perfect summer day and night with friends and family at Taylor’s Tavern. In addition to the cookoff, there’s a fantastic lineup of live music scheduled to keep everyone entertained for the duration – it’s a nonstop party from the moment the gates open! Be sure to register for the cookoff soon, because there’s a limit of 25 teams (max of four cooks per team). For an entry form, rules and more info, contact Henry Willner (270-570-2672) or Andy Payne (270-993-9879). Gates open at 7 a.m. Taylor’s Tavern is located at 2509 W. Parrish Ave. in Owensboro.

8. Overdue books: should jail time be considered?... No way! Jail time should be considered for those who don’t use their library card. Not utilizing all of the free resources and services we offer at HCPL is the real crime! 9. People most often describe me as... Animated and opinionated, often in tandem. My facial expressions and gestures are a language all their own. 10. Why the HCPL rocks… HCPL rocks because the library sincerely, legitimately, 100% makes life better in Henderson, KY. We honestly value customer service and community connections. The staff in every department has heart and it shows in the innovative, new programs targeting children, teens, genealogy, and writers. Our outstanding website goes beyond browsing the catalog; users can sign up for activities, track the Bookmobile, and access subscription-level databases and online resources like Consumer Reports, Mango Languages, and Ancestry.com. For 111 years, we have provided residents with materials, technology, meeting space, storytimes, and fun events, and we’re not slowing down.

around the track with Billy Egeler Yikes, it’s already August. Where in the world is this race season going?! The weather has wreaked havoc on the tracks, but what little racing Mother Nature has allowed to happen has been outstanding! July saw the USAC’s Indiana Sprint Weeks roll into Helfrich’s House, Tri-State Speedway. Sprint Weeks is a yearly event that tours several Hoosier tracks over a one week period and has a separate points series for the week. Brady Short of Bedford, IN was able to park his non-wing sprint in victory lane at the series finale, notching the car’s owner his very first USAC win. According to everyone I’ve talked to, it was an awesome show, and I hate that I missed it. July also saw the United Midwest Promoters Summer Nationals come to an end. 29 races in 30 days is tough to pull off, especially with the amount of rain we’ve had. In fact, Mother Nature won out 9 times this season. Bobby Pierce became the youngest Hell Tour Champion in the twenty some year history of the tour. The Open Wheel Modified portion of

70 |

the tour saw history made with Mike Harrison clinching the championship for the 4th time in only the 5th season of the Modified Nationals. Harrison recorded 8 feature event wins in the tour that only counts your 8 best finishes. At the time of print, Owensboro, KY’s Tyler Nicely was sitting 2nd in points with 2 tour races remaining. Utica, KY’s Josh Harris had an impressive run for the points as well. Nicely and Harris sat 1 & 2 in points until the first week of July. Congrats to both teams on a great series of runs. Nicely and Harris also made a trip on an off weekend to Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway for a $4,444 to win Merrill Downey Memorial. Nicely was able to bring home the win with Harris coming home p2 during his first visit to this speedway. The victory tallied up over $6,000 in winnings for Nicely after leading every lap which paid $44 for each lap led. Just another example showing that our area modified racers are tough customers and a threat to win no matter where they go. Last month the first ever Circle Track Magazine Great American Racing Series event came to

Whitesville, KY’s Kentucky Motor Speedway. The new series for 2015 will host 6 events at 6 different tracks offering $5,000 to the winner and a $30,000 total purse. 4 of these races will be on asphalt tracks and 2 on dirt tracks to add to the excitement. Owensboro, KY driver Brett Hudson, who is coming off a $5,000 win at Salem (IN) Speedway’s Firecracker 200, was able to place himself out front and take home the win. Hudson, a former ARCA driver, has had a tremendous amount of success with the street stock program, collecting multiple $5,000 paydays thus far. Congrats to the Brett Hudson Motorsports team. While we are on the Street Stock class, Owensboro’s Chad Boone collected the 2nd largest payday in his career at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, KY last month. Boone, a former UMP Limited Modified National Champion, rallied to win one of the Midwest’s largest and richest dirt street stock events with a $2,500 payday. The Cont. on page 71

event was the last leg of a 2 day, 2 track series, both offering the same winnings and a $1,000 bonus if a driver could sweep both nights. Friday night’s show at Paducah International Raceway was won by Saint Mary, MO driver Brian Worley. Boone was sidelined early in that event after a driveshaft failure. Congrats to the Boone crew and engine builder, Oakley Motorsports. At the time of print, Cedar Ridge Speedway in Morgantown, KY was preparing for their annual “Hope for Harlie” benefit race. The race offers increased purses for all their weekly classes and raises money for Harlie Bryant, a young girl from Ohio County, KY who has been in a battle with cancer for the past several years. Harlie has become an inspiration to thousands in the area and a huge race fan, too. Her picture was featured on the hood of Brett Hudson’s ARCA car during a race at Daytona International Speedway just a couple of years back sparking her interest in motorsports. Some good news to report this month: Rockport Raceway in Rockport, IN is open and going strong under the new management of John Clark. Clark was a guest on my Regional Motorsports Power Hour in late July and spoke about the changes and increased money

events taking place for the go-kart racers. As many as 95 entries have been seen during a single event thus far. We wish them the best of luck with the continued growth and rebirth of this track. Just across the blue bridge in Owensboro, the racing community has gotten word that Curtis Howard, Jimmy Westerfield and Misty Westerfield have reached an agreement to open Windy Hollow Speedway back up for 4 race events this season. These events are slated to kick off during the month of August so keep your eyes on social media and your ears to my radio show on Tuesday nights for more information. in 2 wheel news, Owensboro’s JD Beach has been high on life lately. Beach competes in Moto America (formerly AMA) and has recorded many wins this season. This is by far the young rider’s best season in the pro ranks, and I believe we are looking at another motorcycle road racing champion in the OWB! Roger Hayden and Princeton, KY’s Jake Lewis have also been having stellar seasons - many podium finishes for both riders competing in Moto America’s top division as teammates. I, for one, am super pumped to see the results at the end of the season!

As we close out another month, just a friendly reminder to those that take time to read this each month. Get out to one of the local racing facilities and check out what our sport has to offer. These guys and girls bust their tails night after night to go out and put on a show for the fans. We all want to see the grandstands full on weekends. You never know who you may see racing around the area. It’s not uncommon for nationally known racers to just “pop in” to one of our tracks. They may not always be there to drive but often come just to watch, scout or help out a friend. Take some kids with you! We need our next generation to get involved to keep the sport alive. I need to say a special thanks to DNJ Auto Parts & Sales and Ted Brown’s Quality Paint & Body as well as all the folks that take time to read this article each month. And THANK YOU to all the fans, drivers, sponsors and track promoters for continuing to keep our sport alive! Until next month, stay safe and I will see you... Around the Track!

music

creatively for me. The first two things that came out of that [period of jamming with Brian] were “Jesus’ Brother James” and “John,” and I knew that both came from a very honest place that I hadn’t written from in the prior band.

The Cold Stares Part 1 of 3 part series

O

ne of the most successful musical acts to emerge from the tri-state area, The Cold Stares have defied expectations at every turn. Now based out of Nashville, the blues-rock duo of Chris Tapp (vocals, guitar) and Brian Mullins (drums) often draws comparisons to The Black Keys and The White Stripes, but there’s an important distinction: neither possesses the sheer sonic power of the Cold Stares. Indeed, anyone who’s caught one of their many local shows over the years will admit to initial confusion - surely, there must be extra musicians out of sight or backing tapes involved. Quite simply, no; rather, Tapp employs a sophisticated amp/effects system that fills in the holes, particularly during the choruses. Check out one of the duo’s blistering live videos on YouTube and you’ll quickly be converted. 2014 saw the release of A Cold Wet Night and a Howling Wind, a spiritual catharsis that seemingly set The Cold Stares on the path to a major label contract. But then life got in the way. Tapp was diagnosed with cancer and from that point forward, things got very, very complicated. The difficult road to physical – and musical – recovery is the subject of a fascinating new documentary, Look Over Yonder Hill. Currently available to view on iTunes, Netflix and YouTube, it’s also scheduled to run on WNIN PBS in September. With two new EPs out - Resonator and Look Over Yonder Hill – and the film’s exposure, the duo is slowly but surely regaining ground.

Tapp kindly took time out to discuss in detail (and often blunt terms), the perils of the music industry. The following Q&A is part one of a three part monthly series. Let’s start at the beginning when you and Brian were playing in a pre-Cold Stares band. That band was a little more melodic and less rifforiented. We were being coached by the labels on what to sound like to secure a deal, and that just wasn’t us at all. At the time, we were all broke and just desperate to get the offer. Luckily for us, we didn’t. We were at the table with Island Records and the rep asked us what kind of band we felt we were. Our bass player said “Americana.” He didn’t know Americana from good grade apple butter, and it went downhill from there. I felt like dying at the time, but in hindsight, God was in control. After the Island deal fell through, you took three months off before getting back together with Brian to jam. How did you spend your time? We worked, raised kids and just tried to be “normal.” I think Brian and I both had told ourselves that after the record label showcases didn’t pan out, it was the end of trying to “make it.” At the time, I wouldn’t even turn on the radio. So to just be locked in a room and make some noise together was amazing, and it really opened the floodgates

Those songs kick-started the independent recording of A Cold Night… Can you give me a sense of how that album fared in terms of sales? We sold a few thousand physical copies and around 25-30,000 downloads online. With physical sales, you basically double your money, but there is zero money now in the digital realm. I’ll get a sales report for a month tracking the two new EPs, and it will say 3-4,000 streams. I’ll get excited until I see that the payment is $19.72. The only money left in the music industry is in licensing your music for commercials, TV and film. It’s the best of times and the worst of times for art, but for the artist trying to make a living, it’s definitely the worst of times. Stay tuned for Pt. 2 next month. Look Over Yonder Hill on WNIN PBS: 9/10, 7 p.m. & 9/11, 10:30 p.m.

music to a contract with a small label. “For DJs, Beatport is our iTunes, and it was a goal to be on there. I didn’t realize it was a normal thing you could do, but I felt like I really made it (laughs). My stuff stood out somehow and charted – would always be in the top 10. So, I just kept making stuff and handing it out.” Figure next introduced his signature Monsters series that has become his musical calling card, a horror movie-themed production that integrates creepy film soundbites with massive beats and wildly oscillating synths. Fans quickly latched on to this annual, over-the-top release – 13 songs every October for the last six years. Yet, it was Figure’s 2012 release that really sent his stock soaring. “I emailed Horns of Apocalypse to Skrillex and an hour later he called and said, ‘I love this – I have to have this.’ Once you get that kind of co-sign, doors open up,” he explains. Multiple labels expressed interest, but by this stage, Figure was operating as an independent artist, running most aspects of his career. It simply made financial sense to cut out the middle men and maintain musical autonomy. “All revenue comes to me, and I can release an album whenever I want – I don’t have to wait for anything,” he says. “I take care of all the licensing myself.”

Figure 29-year-old electronic music producer Figure (Josh Gard) has pretty much toured the world, calls the uber-popular Skrillex a friend and claims nearly 200,000 followers on Facebook. Yet, despite all the success, he continues to live in Newburgh. It’s a seemingly strange choice considering that most of his contacts are out in LA, but that’s the charm of Figure. He’s a prime time player in the electronic music scene but prefers to stay out of the fray and under the radar during his downtime, splitting the difference between two completely different worlds. With a new album, Gravity, set to be released on August 31 (both for sale and for free on Beatport, iTunes and every other digital site) and volume six of his trademark Monsters series to follow in October, Figure is about to step back into the madness. He’ll soon board a bus for a national tour before heading to Europe and Australia. It’s all a long way from his humble beginnings as a 17-year-old North High School student with an interest in beats and production but no access to instruction. “I was listening to DJ Shadow, early Atmosphere and Aesop Rock at the time,” Figure says. “I always felt there was something there – I felt connected to it. So, I started trying to teach myself [how to produce], but there weren’t tutorials on YouTube then and none of my friends did any of that stuff.” Regardless, he proved to be a fast learner, and by age 20, Figure was already attracting attention. An electro-heavy EP made a lot of noise on Beatport and led

About nine months ago, Figure started playing around with a couple tracks that didn’t quite adhere to the Monsters sound. There was more melody and less aggression; the songs bordered on accessible. “I just wanted to move forward,” he says. “It’s the difference between, say, death metal and normal rock and roll.” Figure kept following the musical thread and slowly Gravity took shape, a space-themed album full of 8-bit video game sounds, rich synth patches and even a rare vocal from a female guest singer that opens up new possibilities. The entire far-out soundtrack gels wonderfully and is perfectly complemented by simplistic, fuzzed-out cover art. The next step for Figure is to break into the business of scoring music. He’s already got a foot in the door at Universal Studios and hopes to build on that relationship in the future. “It would be great to just sit at home in my boxers and work on stuff and send it off. That’s my ultimate goal for when I’m too old to jump on planes and jump off stages.” Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • August 2015

Kill the Jukebox BEGINNINGS:

Innocently enough, it started as a funny conversation between three old friends/area musicians over a few drinks in a dimly lit bar. At that point no one had any idea where this ride was headed, but it was surely coming off the tracks. With the duo of Chris Lewis on bass and D.P. on drums laying down and locking in the groove, and the genrebending vocal talents of Mrs. Charley Ryan* leading the attack, this fun-loving, dysfunctional musical family was just about set. But one more ingredient was needed. In stepped a mad scientist of the pickfiddle to round out the group’s ever-flowing sound. Richard Smithhart had just come off of a musical hiatus, and this outsider easily slipped into his role as the band’s guitarist. At that moment Kill the Jukebox was born.

INFLUENCES:

KTJ takes the dance floor by storm everywhere they go with a wideranging mix of modern pop, dance and rock. Influences include Katy Perry, Evanescence, Taylor Swift, Jessi J, Pat Benatar, Jewel, Cher, Tom Petty, The Ataris and Leann Rimes - and yet their sound is distinctly their own. Want to rock out? They rock with the best. Need some smooth groove sounds? They’ve got you covered. In the mood for an acoustic set? They can make it happen.

Pitchfork 2015 Editorial Intern Russell Finn reports on the good, the bad and the amazing Wilco

PERFORMANCES:

Traveling all over Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky, KTJ has been there, played that and will be coming back around to play it again! Check out their website for dates and check out a show! killthejukeboxband.com

There’s a lot to hate about a music festival: The crowd consists of dirty people that you would never talk to; you’re all packed together outside in the mud; there are technical difficulties and a band starts late; some drunk kid next to you keeps talking about all of the other festivals he’s been to; it’s hot. But whenever you’ve waited hours to be in the front row for your favorite band and they walk on stage, all of your negativity washes away.

*Vocalist Charley Ryan can be heard singing the National Anthem for the Evansville Otters, Indiana Pacers, Tri-State Speedway and more.

July 17-19 I attended the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. Here are my top four highlights:

Photo Credits: Big Plans Media; Photography Roger Jeffries/First Impressions Salon; Styling

Mac DeMarco He’s a goofy guy with a goofy backing band, but his songs are sincere and sweet. This contrast works well for his live shows. For his closing song, he sang “Together” from his album 2. While his guitarist soloed, Mac dove into the crowd and surfed right over the top of me. Perfume Genius This Seattle solo artist makes artsy pop music and executes it live with the careful precision that pop typically only captures on studio recordings. Perfume Genius avoids a lot of pop clichés and is a great performer. I have liked his music for awhile, but now I appreciate it even more. Viet Cong This new(ish) band was one of my most anticipated performances and they completely blew my mind, justifying the hours I spent waiting to be in the front row. Everyone went nuts when they closed with the 15 minute post-punk jam, “Death.” Wilco When they headlined on Friday night, it was truly surreal. I somehow managed to be at the very front for a double set which featured their new album played live for the first time followed by a selection of fan favorites. Hands down the greatest performance I’ve ever seen. - Russell Finn

River City Heroes: Ascendance Local film in the works imagines a new trio of super heroes roaming the streets, exacting justice The tri-state’s creative arts scene continues to thrive, and one of the main players contributing to its success is Owensboro writer/producer/ director P.J. Starks of Verite Cinema. His recent horror anthology, Volumes of Blood, has received widespread recognition, including numerous write-ups and glowing reviews from some of the most respected genrerelated websites. Now, Starks has joined forces with fellow writers/ directors Jeremy Scoggins and Matthew Hibbs to produce an exciting new project, River City Heroes: Ascendance. The film features a trio of “ordinary people called upon to be the vigilante heroes of a city wrought with dark secrets.” Known as Knightmare, Dreamcatcher and Anarchy-X, these self-professed saviors are driven by personal demons to stop the corruption that threatens to cripple River City. Along the way, they do battle with a series of shifty characters, including Animus, Persephone Masters and Strife. “River City Heroes is a project that I have been dedicated heart and soul to for about a year now. The time and effort that everyone is putting into the project continues to overwhelm me. In film, many concepts prove to be hit or miss, but, pipe-dreams aside, I believe RCH can look forward to an impressive run,” he says.

In addition to writing and directing, Scoggins also stars in the film along with Louisa Torres, Derreck Fraser, Markus Porter, Kevin Arnold, Jeremiah Hinson and Jaron Scoggins. Starks, who is acting as executive producer, appreciates the opportunity to branch out. “I’m a huge super hero nerd. So when Jeremy and Matthew approached me at an Indiana Filmmakers Network meeting, I knew I had to be onboard. It’s a cool, exciting project, and I’m glad that I’m getting the chance to help make it a reality.” You can help contribute to the completion of River City Heroes by visiting indiegogo.com/projects/river-city-heroes-ascendance-2/x/11074132#/story. photography initially freaked out about my pictures with sexy women. They were totally like, ‘this guy is the devil’ but all of a sudden that’s changed,” Brown says. “I’m known for controversial stuff, but I believe in everybody having the freedom to do that what they want.” Something else he wholeheartedly believes in is the photogenic nature of local model China Chism. The two connected online and have worked together ever since, developing a great friendship in the process. “She’s absolutely gorgeous,” Brown says. “A lot of other models have helped me get noticed, but China is the main one over the last four years. She’s never canceled on me – always shows up. We’re definitely a team and everyone knows us as a duo.” And the partnership continues to flourish. A recent Jamaican photo shoot was a big success with more travel on the horizon.

Kevin Brown Beyond Reality Photography

A

fter 15 years as a car salesman, Newburgh resident Kevin Brown was more than up for a change. Spare time had often been spent drawing, but with the birth of his son, life inevitably got a whole lot busier. Still, he wasn’t ready to put his creativity to bed just yet. That’s when Brown made the decision to revisit a past hobby – photography. Unlike the tedious process of drawing, taking pictures required little set-up and, subsequently, much less of his time. Ideas came quicker, too, as Brown merged his love of science fiction and fantasy with his rekindled interest in cameras to produce some truly off the wall shots along with more traditional settings and subjects. This duality proved to be the key to getting noticed. “That’s why my range is so different from just about anyone else around here,” Brown says. “Most people do one style

and that’s it. I do everything from maternity and senior pictures to somebody who wants wings or horns put on them.” Through word of mouth and social media, Brown’s name made the rounds. Requests for his services started rolling in along with enough money to get him thinking about a new career. “I decided to try and live the dream. I figured I could always go back into the car business if necessary, so I gave it a shot, and so far I’ve done fairly well – the last few months have been extremely busy,” he says. But while Brown’s fledgling photography business is now full steam ahead, he’s certainly had his share of detractors along the way. Specifically, his portfolio is padded with boudoir photos that some find too racy for this neck of the woods. “People

Currently, Brown works his photo magic from home. He’s turned his living space into a quality studio dubbed Beyond Reality where he can do “so many crazy things,” like make people appear that they’re under water, for example. Running his business there helps to defer costs, but Brown also really enjoys shooting on location where he can “make the photos really shine.” Either way, he’s just happy to be doing something he loves – though the shift in direction is admittedly an adjustment. “It’s still weird knowing that I’ve left the car business behind. I’ve lived such a fast-paced life for the last 15 years – go, go, go. And now I’m my own boss – I live or die by what I do,” he says. But despite the stresses of being self-employed, it sure beats his previous gig. “Being a photographer is so much different. You’re providing people with memories that they’ll want to look back on years from now.” facebook.com/beyondrealityimages https://www.facebook.com/photoKB

Shelley

We started out of necessity. Jimmy Russell needed a car to get to work, so we found a chassis, four wheels and a steering wheel, and we welded it all together, using old signs we had rummaged from Jimmy’s old man’s salvage yard. He drove that thing for three years, before he wrecked it into the front of Cat Thomlinson’s neighbor’s house and nearly caught the whole neighborhood on fire. We built him another one, though, so it would be ready and waiting for him once he fulfilled his obligations with the state correctional facility. By then, we had moved up production. We were building a car a week, and we were getting pretty good at it, too, giving each car its own personality. Some of us had even started to build other things. George Finnely built a pontoon boat. Barry Jordan built an actual tank. And Hank Voss built a helicopter that he crashed into the front of Cat Thomlinson’s neighbor’s house. But it wasn’t until Ryan Yu built a robot that we began thinking we had really hit our stride. We named it Shelley, because it was like our Dr. Frankenstein’s monster. Only, we would have never told her that. We had wanted her to feel like one of us. We taught her to read and write, and how to file her tax return. We even let her cut the turkey on Thanksgiving. So, on the day she disappeared, we felt a little ashamed. We wondered if maybe we hadn’t done enough. Maybe if we had remembered to take out the trash more often or if we had learned to fix that leaky faucet, she would have stayed. We thought that maybe she just wasn’t satisfied with the life we had given her, and that hurt, but we were also proud, because we knew she was out there, somewhere, living her own life as a robot—a robot we had built. Lobeck’s

Maggie (PG-13)

Lowdown

Lionsgate Films

Have you ever been watching one of the countless, interchangeable zombie films that have flooded society for almost a decade and thought to yourself, “This movie sure could use some Ahhnold”? Well, you’re in luck. Maggie isn’t going to show you anything new, but its appeal can be summed up in one word: Schwarzenegger. Still an undeniable on-screen presence, an older, more weathered Arnold seems unusually vulnerable as a loving father, forced to come to terms with his infected daughter’s slow transition into the world of the undead. I see no Oscars in his future, but Arnold does show that he’s got more to offer than one-liners and blazing paths of utter destruction and carnage. Maggie really isn’t bad. The cast is just fine, and the writing is passable, though predictable. But while the film itself is reasonably enjoyable, it’s also immediately forgettable. The biggest thing I took away from Maggie was that an older, less exaggerated Schwarzenegger is more relatable. He’s still the star he’s always been. Just in a more subdued, less cartoonish way. Maggie is definitely a win for both the star and the filmmakers. It’s a nice warm-up for Arnold before jumping headfirst into another Terminator film. For the filmmakers, landing Schwarzenegger almost guarantees a builtin audience. For the viewer, Maggie is worth renting, especially if you’re a Schwarzenegger fan. Otherwise, no harm in skipping this one. - J. Robert Lobeck

Swatting: a growing problem in the community

R

ecently, my wife and I were making dinner for ourselves. It was just us and our pets. Thankfully, our son was at his grandma’s. Just before sitting down to eat, we were startled by an aggressive pounding on our door. Heather went to answer as I prepared to carry our meal to the table. It was officers from the Evansville Police Department, and lots of them. As I rounded the corner from my kitchen, I noticed an officer carrying an assault rifle outside my front window. They had set up a perimeter of armed police that, according to my neighbor, stretched down our street. My wife had just received her very first parking ticket less than a week ago. I thought to myself, ‘this seems to be a slight overreaction.’ In all seriousness, we were both terrified. A single officer kept me in the house while multiple officers questioned my wife outside. Our dogs were going crazy in our backyard, and I am grateful that the officers chose to ignore them. So why did all this happen? The officer let me know that a 911 call had been placed by my wife, claiming she was holding her husband hostage and was going to kill him. They matched her name to our address and proceeded to swarm our home. We had been “swatted.” “Swatting” is a problem that I would describe as prank calling on steroids. A person calls 911, claims to be someone they’re not and reports a false emergency in order to send a team of police to a specific location. According to the EPD, this is now a great concern among citizens and businesses in our area. In fact, the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library recently dealt with a “swatting” incident. If you Google this issue, you will quickly realize how serious - and potentially deadly - “swatting” can be. Thankfully, my wife handled herself perfectly, and we are appreciative of the way the EPD handled the situation. Obviously, they have to take every call seriously, but were very friendly after concluding that I had not been taken hostage by my lovely wife. After about 45 minutes, we sat down to our cold steaks, absolutely bewildered. We have yet to deal with the awkwardness of explaining to our neighbors what happened. I strongly suggest making yourself aware of “swatting.” It’s not funny. It’s dangerous, and it could have some very nasty results.

What is America’s most popular sandwich? It appears that one of the members of the Kardashian tribe has indeed broken the internet. The statement, while groundbreaking, was made with one simple request from the Olympic juggernaut and reality star: “Call me Caitlyn.” The interview with Bruce pre-transition was poignant, depicting a person who’s been struggling with gender identity since an incredibly young age, facing depression, rejection, and self-loathing. At 65 years old, this person has made a terrifying decision to show the world who she feels she truly is, knowing full well the ramifications. Despite a hopeful outpouring of support, she is opening herself up to ridicule, fear, and hate. The concept of bravery has been tossed around, rejected as valid, when it comes to Caitlyn. I, for one, believe that if someone feels like a stranger in their own body, if they are willing to step up and say, “no more,” while facing such scrutiny, they are pretty damn brave. Even with the recent influx of support for the LGBT community, the T seems to be just that - a mere designation for a group of people that no one really wants to hear from or talk about. I don’t believe that Caitlyn is trying to be a face for anything, but visibility, especially from such a well-known face, is key in helping move the trans community into the light. Honestly, I think Caitlyn just wants to be herself. Reasonable enough. While some may not understand her struggle, or fear it, just know this - we are all just

people, pursuing happiness and selfactualization, and you can never be her, so you will never truly understand. That’s ok. But instead of hating what you don’t know, making jokes, and inflicting more pain on someone who’s already hurting, educate yourself. Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, and light a candle for all of the lives lost in an attempt to openly express themselves. “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” -E.E. Cummings

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 7 Liquor Locker locations. www.Liquor-Locker.com

Magic Hat IPA

Quaff On Blonde Ale

Daniel Knight • 3 Magic Hat calls this one an American IPA with added grapefruit peel. When poured, it produces about 1.5 fingers of soapy looking head that quickly fades away. Its nose is a lot more low key than I expected and not very IPA-like. I’m getting more of a pilsner aroma, some hops there, and some grapefruit, but subtle. The taste mirrors the nose. Not bad, but not IPA-like in my opinion. That said, it doesn’t taste bad. It’s refreshing and drinkable, although I wouldn’t be likely to have another.

Daniel Knight • 2.25 This is a murky looking, dull, light strawcolored wheat ale. It pours up with a puny head that promptly fades away. The nose is faint and unimpressive. I notice very subtle hints of biscuits. The taste is light and cheap domestic-like with a typical and uneventful watered-down flavor. I taste wheat and maybe some spices.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thin white head forms on this translucent golden beer when poured into a beer mug. Hoppy citrus notes come to the forefront when smelling the beer with some malt notes also present. The first sip of the beer coats the tongue with hop and grapefruit flavors, which remain through a long finish. IPA fans will definitely want to drink this beer during the summer months. Pair it with spicy foods like Mexican or Cajun dishes. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a light, amber-colored beer. You can smell the grapefruit right off the bat. You can also taste the grapefruit, but does it really need it since it’s an IPA? This Magic Hat isn’t bad, but the one thing I don’t really care for is the extra bitterness the grapefruit provides in the finish.

Paul Bragin • 4 An extremely thick white head tops a straw-colored beer and never evaporates completely when poured in a pub glass. Malt and fruity overtones fill the nose. The fruit flavors continue during the tasting, with some hop presence also detectable. At 4.5% ABV, this ale is a great choice for a session beer. Pair it with lighter dishes like salads, chicken or fish. You can also serve it with cheeses like Monterrey Jack or Edam. Jabez Martinez • 3

This beer pours a straw color with good carbonation. It has a very light hops flavor but nothing to set it apart from other ales. I was hoping for something special with this beer, but it’s just an average American ale.

Kentucky Barrel Old Fashioned

Daniel Knight • 4 Kentucky Old Fashioned Barrel Ale is an American Strong Ale that’s undergone an interesting (to say the least) transformation via an aging process that involves oak bourbon barrels. It pours up a clear, dark tea color with an attractive ample head. Its nose is fruity with bourbon. The flavor has an oakiness, like sipping a nice bourbon but lighter. This is nicely done. At 10% ABV it’s a good idea to stop with one or at least have a designated driver. Give this one a try; it might just be your “cup of tea.” Paul Bragin • 4.5 A medium white head crowns this ale when poured into a glass, with a deep amber beer beneath it. Spices and some cherry notes dominate the nose, along with the scent of alcohol. Malt flavors first shine through while drinking the beer, with the spice and fruit notes coming back during the finish. This beer is 10% ABV, so be careful. Beer connoisseurs will want to pick up this seasonal while it’s still available. Jabez Martinez • 3.5

I could taste the bourbon flavors from the barrels it was brewed in. I could also taste the cherry flavor but it was a little light. I also noticed the 10% ABV, but it doesn’t have the warming effect that the higher alcohol content beers have.

Daniel Knight • 3.25 The earliest history of Spaten goes back to 1397. Each year, Spaten re-creates this traditional brew. It pours up a clear copper color with a one finger off-white head that quickly fades to a thin film. Light lacing appears as the enjoyment process progresses. The aroma is malty and biscuity. The flavor hints of caramel, malt and toast. A slightly bitter aftertaste lingers on the

palate after each sip. Overall, this is an above average Oktoberfest. I was surprised to have it this early in the year, but I’m not complaining. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick white head forms on this beer and disappears quickly after pouring it into a beer mug. The amber-colored beer is reminiscent of maple syrup. A balance of malt and hops play on the nose, with the malt stronger at the end. The taste also features malt and hop flavors going back and forth, with the malt maintaining a better presence in the finish. Pair this with traditional German dishes and pretzels. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a dark, amber-colored beer. I would consider this a better than average Oktoberfest-style beer but just a little on the lighter side. It’s a very smooth beer with a nice finish. Follow us on twitter @

Faults (R) Screen Media

Feeling out of control can be one of the most frightening things in the world, but even more sinister is the idea that relinquishing control can be cathartic. The definition of “cult” can be subjective, an idea that has fascinated society and is covered heavily by the media. Written and directed as a feature film debut by Riley Stearns, Faults follows the work of Dr. Ansel Roth (Leland Orser), a once-renowned mind control expert. Publicly blamed by his peers for involvement in a patient’s death after post-cult reform therapy, divorced, and broke, Roth is forced into scantily-attended motel signings for his unsuccessful second book, clearly on the verge of losing his mind as well. When Roth meets Evelyn (Beth Grant, Donnie Darko) and Paul (Chris Ellis, Catch Me if You Can), however, he seems to have found a purpose and financial opportunity after being asked to assist in recapturing their daughter Claire (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Deathproof) from what they believe to be a cult called Faults. As reality and ideals become muted, a power struggle ensues, and we begin to wonder if Roth has lost his touch or simply bitten off more than he can chew. A gripping foray into the murky depths of human nature, the film also boasts tense cinematography and a guttural score that leaves one questioning who is actually making the decisions in their life. Refreshing and terrifying, it’s not monsters and blood, but true horror.

Advantageous (Unrated) Single mother Gwen (Jacqueline Kim) and her bright daughter Jules (Samantha Kim, Futurestates) live in a futuristic but believable city where appearance and luxury are king while those who can’t keep up are quietly brushed under a rug. Plastic surgery has been succeeded by a procedure that allows one to switch their brain functions and memories with another body. The company responsible dominates, with the highly intelligent and beautiful, but aging Gwen as their spokesperson. When they decide to fully prove their agenda, Gwen learns that she is being replaced with someone younger. Unable to find another job despite experience and notoriety, cut off from her family and friends, her allegiance to Jules becomes top priority. She makes a difficult but seemingly necessary decision to take care of her small family, but not without consequence for all involved. Humbling and visually striking, Advantageous is sci-fi for both those who love it and those who typically do not. It’s fresh and addresses concerns for the future while cutting into the deepest cavern of humanity that remains when all of the glitz and facades are erased. Co-written by Kim and director Jennifer Phang, the film was received well at Sundance, winning two awards with five nominations. With impressive supporting roles by comedian Ken Jeong (Community) and newcomer Freya Adams, Advantageous is a solid film in every facet.

cd sidebar Young Thug Barter 6

300, Atlantic

Young Thug is like Joe Pesci’s character in Goodfellas. He’s goofy, and he has a funny voice, but you are waiting for him to explode in a violent rage at any moment. On Barter 6, the balance between humorous lyrics and gangster façade is perfect. Young Thug isn’t trying to make any sort of crazy artistic or political statement; he’s just making good rap music.

Wavves X Cloud Nothings No Life for Me Ghost Ramp

Wavves and Cloud Nothings are two of the biggest punk bands active right now. Fortunately, the frontmen of each act realized they would make a great team. No Life for Me quite honestly is an amalgamation of the best of both bands. Every song is great. The only downside is the album is 21 minutes long. By the time it’s finished, you’re left wanting more. Hopefully they’ll make a sequel project, because No Life for Me is fantastic.

Tame Impala Currents

Interscope With their 2012 hit “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards,” Tame Impala shifted ever so slightly from psychedelic rock to pop and won over the hearts of thousands. Frontman Kevin Parker took this as a nod of approval and made the complete shift from rock to pop for Currents. Many will criticize Tame Impala for setting aside the guitars and rocking out on the synths—their loss. Currents is the great summer album we’ve been waiting for. - Russell Finn

cd reviews Bully

Feels Like

Startime International Holy hell, kids. Meet Bully, probably the best thing to come out of Nashville in, well, forever. Fronted by the ultra dreamy, bleached siren Alicia Bognanno (who looks like Kurt and Courtney’s long-lost child), this fledgling four piece proves that there is still hope for the younger generation. Despite the recent influx of grungy 90’s wannabes from the ‘burbs touring on their parents’ dime, it’d be difficult to discredit what Bully’s done with Feels Like. Solid, cathartic, and massively energetic from start to finish, it could be my favorite album of the year thus far if I was feeling committal in the least. The first track, “I Remember,” is short and tight, a grossly honest tribute dripping with the residual anger of lost love. Bognanno’s howling vocals demand, “who knows you better than/ I know everything that freaks you out/ that makes you mad/ that makes you melt.” “Too Tough” reels it in a hair, but is still honey-coated sneer all the way - “could you lie anymore/ I’m only half sorry for bringing you down before” - and leads into the bounce of a restless but sunny tune, “Brainfreeze.” Possibly my favorite, the depth and anxiety of “Trying” are so simple that it hurts. Bully serves it rock-hard, brutal and with no expletives until the very end, making me want to high-five Bognanno for allowing us to experience her release. Gold stars all around.

Active Child Mercy Vagrant

There’s still legit music floating around out there, but when I don’t have to dig around so much, it’s very refreshing. Enter Pat Grossi (aka Active Child), the LA-based former Philadelphia Boys Choir member whose vocals are pure silk accompanied by dreamlike piano and teasing beats. Mercy is Child’s first full-length album in four years and thank whatever for it, because his growth is glaringly apparent. It’s electronic R&B, ambient and soul-shredding with more than a few baby-making tracks. “99” opens in a heartbroken dreamscape, with indecipherable layers of gentle sound, begging for salvation and speaking to all of the feels - “I think about you all the time/ wonder if you think of me when you smile/ because from the moment we met/ we were out of our heads/ I know.” The opening piano and smooth vocals of “These Arms” are a bit reminiscent of early 90’s R&B, and I can’t help but laugh a bit when Child gets a little Aaron Neville on us, but honestly it’s more Sam Smith with bigger (albeit sedated) chops. “Darling” is more straightforward musically speaking, with gorgeous picking and obvious choir boy bleeding through. His falsetto is absolutely ridiculous, and the entire album is like one long prom slow dance in outer space. Entrancing yet groovy; I dig it.

cd reviews (cont.) Texas T and the Jangle Sheep

Texas T’s Janglin’ EP: A Damn Good Time Self-Released

Hooray for a local, original music. This self-proclaimed “funk/jazz/rock ‘n’ roll/ whateverthef*ck band” from Evansville consists of Travis Horton on guitar/ lead vocals, Mike Cassidy on guitar, Sean Adams on drums and Jake Bethel on bass. Their mouthful of an EP was released at the end of June, and while wading through Facebook’s clogged local music promotion, I stumbled across something intriguing. All of you Deadheads and My Morning Jacket fans, give it a listen. “Ever Afternoon” (personal favorite) opens with a catchy drumbeat and blues-y riff paired with vocals that remind me a little bit of Les Claypool, and lyrics about those sad and beautiful good-time gals we’ve all known - “it’s gonna be a while now/ til the fire will burn out/ she’s a bombshell of affection.” It’s going to be stuck in your head for a while, I promise. Aptly titled, “Totem Pole” is a hard nod to the Grateful Dead, danceable and bonfire-ready, and touches on the common problem of a fuzzy relationship status. “Morning Doesn’t Come Again” is a layered trip with impressive guitar work and although jam band-y, the pace is consistent and it’s over before you can ask when it will be. The album is available for a “name your price” purchase on Bandcamp, and for live show dates, follow them on Facebook.

Third Eye Blind Dopamine

Mega Collider It’s been six years since Ursa Major (who?), but Third Eye Blind is back with what Stephan Jenkins has promised to be their last full-length studio album. When researching new albums, I had to chuckle a little when I found Dopamine. My early teens were ensconced in their first two albums, purchased from my Columbia House subscription along with many other embarrassing choices that are still floating around in some large, worn out CD case in the garage. Of course, as a sentimental Sally, I had to check it out. They haven’t lost their sound, which is both comforting and a little boring. Catchy as usual, the first track, “Everything is Easy,” boasts some pretty decent lyrics - “go ahead, take my heart up/ roll it up like a joint/ smoke me out until the feeling gets cashed.” By the second track, “Shipboard Cook,” it’s apparent that their love struggles are going to take over most of the album, light on the cheese but heavy on sympathy. The b-side, however, holds an intriguing surprise - a cover of Beyonce’s “Mine.” Huh? It’s difficult, in my opinion, to cover a Queen Bey song and get away with it, but it’s not bad, even without Drake. And it’s clean, with vocals easily understood and produced well by the front man himself, a pop/rock attempted comeback at its finest. Ok, 3EB, I see you. -Whitney Patterson Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • August 2015
