A quick note from the editor Well, it’s officially the dead of winter. Or close enough. Despite having lived through a great number of cold seasons here in Evansville as well as a particularly brutal four month-long ice age in Chicago circa 1996, I never seem to get used to it - and I never stop complaining. But I’ll spare you the sob story for now. What’s interesting, however, is that even though the temps are dropping like drones from the sky and many people are holing up in their homes, the tri-state is showing serious signs of life event-wise. Compared to December and January, this month is a virtual barnburner. Case in point:

Plus, Mardi Gras parties are scheduled all over the area leading up to Fat Tuesday on February 9 and Valentine’s Day follows suit with its own variety of celebrations. There’s frankly too much going on to even notice that you’re freezing to death. And that’s not even counting western Kentucky where there’s always something happening. So take a look inside and take your mind off the cold. Or run in place - whatever works. - TE

WWE Road to Wrestlemania Buckle up: the battle for the belt is on at the Ford Center February 28 They want to let you know that something you did that night offended them, I guess - but only when there’s a safe distance between us. Your rivalry with Dean Ambrose is classic. Do you at least have a grudging respect for the guy? I mean, I have respect for anybody who does this, because it’s not easy, obviously. But there’s obviously a rivalry there. We’re competing for the Intercontinental title, so it’s just a matter of your career advancing and flourishing. You know, it’s definitely a competitive business, so being Intercontinental Champion means that you’re on TV more often and you’re featured more heavily on the shows - everything comes with being the champion.

W

hen the stars of the WWE come face to face, anything can happen - especially when there’s a title on the line. This year’s Road to Wrestlemania event will see “new” kid on the block, Kevin Owens, try to avenge his recent loss to Dean Ambrose and reclaim the Intercontinental Championship. Their current feud has been gold for fans, resulting in epic matches that have left both the wrestlers and the crowd utterly exhausted but still hungry for more. Expect the same intensity from these two ring warriors at the Ford Center along with a host of other stars, including Big Show, Bray Wyatt, US Champion Alberto Del Rio, Demon Kane, Dolph Ziggler and more. Kevin Owens kindly spoke to News4U ahead of his big rematch. It took years for you to reach the big time of the WWE - long overdue or was the timing just right? It took me 14 years on the independent scene before I got noticed by WWE, so in a way I guess it was a bit overdue, but I think that the reason why I wasn’t noticed before was because it was a different culture and they had a different way of looking at the people

that they signed. But I think I was at the right place and the right time when they started needing people to make people take notice of NXT; guys like myself and Finn Balor who they signed at the same time were the most logical way to go. Yes, it took me a while to get here, but now that I’m here I think I’m making the best of the time I have here, and I’ve moved up the ranks pretty quickly. I’m kind of making up for lost time, I guess. You’re considered one of the greatest “heels” in recent WWE history. As the WWE’s most popular villain, how do people react to you in public? You know, people use these terms - “heels” and “faces” and stuff - but I don’t think that really applies to me. I’ve always been myself. Some people will find me abrasive when I’m on TV and that’s just part of what I do. I think most people can tell the difference between what’s on TV and what’s real life. In real life nobody’s ever been rude to me or ever given me a reason to be upset or anything. Funnily enough, people are more disrespectful when you leave an arena after a show and you’re walking to your car and fans can see you sometimes they’re behind a fence or a barrier - that’s when they’re the most disrespectful.

February 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Is there anything in particular he does that gets under your skin? No, just his general self, I’d say - his presence, his way of moving and talking. So...is there anything about him that doesn’t bother you? Oh, I don’t know - he’s got nice t-shirts. If I wasn’t embroiled in a big rivalry with him, I could see myself wearing his merch, I guess.

Considering the NFL’s controversy with longterm health problems, including the effects of concussions, do you worry about the effect of all your years in the ring? I can’t say that I do. First of all, I spent 15 years on the independent scene and I don’t think I ever had a concussion once. And now that I’m

with the WWE, they have one of the best wellness programs around - which a lot of people think just means that they test us for a lot of stuff, but a big part of it is making sure that we’re all healthy; when we’re injured, they take care of us. And if you look at the old stars of the sport like Ric Flair - those guys are still incredibly sharp; Dusty Rhodes, in particular - because I worked with him when I was with NXT - was one of the smartest men I’ve ever met in wrestling. He was nearly 70 [when he passed], and he did it for his whole life. It seems like if guys who have been at it for 30 or 40 years are in fine shape, then I’m not too worried about my future.

Speaking of old school wrestlers like Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes, who do you admire from the early days of the sport? Well, I grew up on Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels - even Brock Lesnar to a lesser extent. I was 18 years old when he made his debut on the WWE. I was actually there live on his first night when he came out on RAW and destroyed everybody. So, I was a big fan of those guys, but I started watching wrestling when I was 11, and I only watched WWE - wasn’t exposed to any other kind of wrestling. But over the last few years, I went back and watched a lot of stuff. And it might seem like I’m biased because I loved the man - I got to spend 10 months with Dusty Rhodes. Getting to learn from him was such an incredible experience. Not only was he one of the smartest men in wrestling, but he was also one of the nicest. For me, there’s nobody else like Dusty Rhodes from those years - the way he connected with the crowd, which to me has always mattered more than who has the best matches. Final question: what do you intend to do to Mr. Ambrose at the Ford Center on February 28? Anything within the realm of the rules of the match that will allow me to walk out as the Intercontinental Champion. That’s all I care about. It might not be pretty, but it’s going to be entertaining. The event starts at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter.com.

Metric

Multi-platinum indie rockers bringing “Pagans in Vegas Tour” to Indianapolis and Louisville

F

ronted by enigmatic and striking lead singer Emily Haines, Canada’s Metric have built one of the most consistent music careers of the last 20 years regardless of genre. 2003’s debut, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, set the template for the band’s intriguing mix of indie rock, new wave and, most notably, classical elements, setting them apart from the pack and gaining them a huge following that has stuck around ever since. With each successive album, Metric have stretched out, continuing to grow while still retaining their pop sensibilities. Catchy, guitar-based fan favorites like “Monster Hospital,” “Help I’m Alive” and “Youth Without Youth” have been balanced out by less immediate, more experimental offerings, from ambient explorations to moody piano pieces. And now with Pagans in Vegas, Metric have sped up the evolutionary process, going full-on electronic. Their latest album touches on synth-pop, recalling Depeche Mode and mid80s New Order at times, but also travels down darker paths, particularly the final five tracks that culminate with the stark instrumental,

10 |

“The Face Pt. I & II.” Metric are currently out on the road in support of the new album, on course to play the Old National Centre in Indianapolis on March 5 and Louisville’s Mercury Ballroom on March 6. Guitarist and co-founder Jimmy Shaw kindly spoke with News4U just before the start of the tour. Right from the opening track on Metric’s debut album, there was clear evidence that the band was not going to write typical indie rock songs. Was that always the game plan? Well, first of all, before even answering the question, I have to say that it’s awesome timing, because about an hour ago, I was in the shower and I was thinking about what we’re going to do a little differently on this tour. And the main thing that’s kind of been going through my head is, ‘what are we going to open the show with?’ Now, don’t hold me to this, but my idea as of this morning is to open with “IOU” - the first track on the debut. And I’ve been thinking about how we would do that [classical-based] piano part - what the

February 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

staging would look like, etc. And so, I think it’s really cool that that’s the first thing you brought up. But in terms of where our style came from...you know, I studied classically and went to school for music until I was 19. To be honest, I was much more familiar with Beethoven and Bach than I was with Blondie and Siouxsie & the Banshees. It’s really hard to shed those roots. As the new album is so electronic, did you actually write the songs on keyboards or just translate your guitar ideas? I very rarely write music on guitar, to be honest with you. If I do, it’s usually a bass guitar. What usually happened back in the day - like a lot of the stuff that I wrote for Fantasies and Synthetica - was that I would come in to the studio, press play on the drum machine, hit a couple chords on a Roland keyboard or something like that and just kind of sketch something out. It would usually sound pretty sh*tty and without genre because it happened really fast. Then we would take that and turn it into Metric and make it like a rock band. Contrarily, Emily would write songs just on an acoustic piano but also entirely skeletal and without genre. And again, we would turn them into rock songs. Speaking of rock songs, was there any concern about deviating so far from the Metric blueprint on Pagans?

This could either be a tale of how we went incredibly wrong or how we were incredibly brave. And we’ll never know which one of the two it is (laughs). In the beginning of 2014,

Metric (cont. from pg. 10) we decided to take the year off. During that time, Emily and I did a huge amount of writing on our own and I don’t really think that we knew what we were writing for. For me, I just had just bought a new modular synthesizer and as I was writing all this new stuff, rather than using crappy equipment for the demo, I started incorporating a Roland Jupiter 8 and Prophet 6, etc. - I went way further with it, and instead of it being without genre [as in the past], it started being with genre. Then when we started listening back to this stuff, it was like, ‘oh, this doesn’t actually want to be translated back into another genre of music’. Meanwhile, Emily was fleshing out her sad songs on the piano with rough string arrangements; she was also using beats

and samples. Her material was almost complete by itself and didn’t want to be changed from the inside. So what we decided to do was make these two records and split them apart without trying to make them into that one road in the middle like we’d always done in the past. So we made Pagans and then we were offered a tour with Imagine Dragons. So we decided to go ahead and release the album and then record the other album while we were on the road and just get it out real quick afterwards. To be honest, it didn’t entirely work, because we never really got the other album completed fast enough to the point where the two things should have been side by side. It almost feels like it’s too late to have it be a part of one sentence. So now we’re in this place where we’re trying to figure out what the (bleep) to do about the other record. From the outside, it appears that Metric’s career has been one long pleasant ride. What’s the view from the inside? That’s a good question. We’re definitely aware of the fact that we have had an incredibly consistent career and presence - much more than other people we’ve known. But our rise was so much slower than everybody else that was around us. It sounds cliche, but Jimmy Cliff said it: the harder they come, the harder they fall. When it takes 10 years to get there, you can’t really lose it overnight - it doesn’t work that way; it definitely feels like we’re in a pretty safe place. But having said that, considering that we’re in the most volatile industry of all-time, it could all be over tomorrow morning. There could be a Huffington Post piece that says, “music industry bought by Time Warner” - and there’s no music anymore. It wouldn’t even be that shocking. Some shows on the upcoming tour have already sold out, so be sure to visit ilovemetric.com for tickets now!

Luke Bryan

at The Ford Center Country music’s biggest star ready to kick the dust up on the “Kill the Lights Tour” Almost one year to the day after selling out the Ford Center on the “That’s My Kind of Night Tour,” Luke Bryan is set to return on February 18 in support of his latest album, Kill the Lights. But he won’t be going it alone. This time around, the 2015 CMA Entertainer of the Year is bringing along special guests Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch - both highly successful acts in their own right. It’s a lineup that promises to deliver on the party atmosphere that’s become the hallmark of every Luke Bryan show. In other words, the energy inside the Ford Center will be off the charts. Speaking of charts...2015 was yet another incredible year for Bryan. In August, he released his fifth studio album, Kill the Lights, a fan favorite that reached number one both here in the U.S. and abroad and produced several huge hits, including “Kick the Dust Up” and “Strip It Down.” It’s Bryan’s most successful release to date - yet more proof that he’s the biggest country star on the planet. To top the year off, Bryan cleaned up yet again at the award shows, taking home not only that coveted CMA for Entertainer of the Year but the AMA for Favorite Country Male Artist as well. The only thing left to do after such a mind-blowing stretch of his career was to hit the road again and reconnect with the Nut House - Bryan’s affectionate term for his crazy fans. Just come to one of his shows and you’ll understand. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For more info, visit the fordcenter.com.

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra February Performances A little serious, a little sentimental; two very different shows lined up for the EPO this month Colton, Lucille Beer, Timothy LeFebvre, William Hite, Andrea Drury and Matthew O’Neill. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Mendelssohn began composing at an early age, inspired by his interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1832, he completed his Oratorio, St. Paul, and some years later was commissioned to write a new work for chorus and orchestra. That piece, shaped by (and taking its name from) the Old Testament’s story of the prophet Elijah, first debuted at the Birmingham Festival in 1846. The response to this new Oratorio was uniformly positive as critics and audiences alike quite rightly hailed it as genius. Time has only served to ensure its place on the list of the greatest classical works. *Coming in March: Classical Guitar & Beethoven’s Pastorale

efore diving into the upcoming February performances, let’s take a moment to applaud the recent news that Maestro Alfred Savia has signed on through 2019. The highly-respected conductor’s new contract should see him reach the 30 year mark with the EPO, an incredible achievement by any standard. In short, it’s been a privilege having someone as accomplished as Savia leading the orchestra, so here’s to at least another three years (and hopefully many more). Dancing & Romancing: February 13-14 Just like the EPO’s annual Peppermint Pops holiday concert, Valentine’s Day performances are cherished by the orchestra’s legion of fans. This year won’t be any different with Broadway stars Joan Hess and Kirby Ward on board to deliver some of the greatest romantic songs every written, including “Cheek to Cheek,” “In the Mood,” “Singing in the Rain,” “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Begin the Beguine.” Both singers know their way

around a stage, having performed at venues all over the world. Ward, in fact, counts numerous queens, presidents, first ladies and dignitaries as fans while Hess, in addition to appearing on Broadway, has been featured on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and the PBS series Great Performances; she’s also worked on independent films and produced live TV. Together, Ward - the quintessential song and dance man - and Hess bring years of invaluable experience to their collaboration with the EPO. The chemistry and respect shared between these two consummate professionals should make for another dynamic Valentine’s Day performance sure to have couples in the audience feeling the love. Mendelssohn’s Elijah: February 27 Closing out this month, the orchestra will return to the Classics for a stirring performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, an epic oratorio that chronicles dramatic events in the life of the biblical prophet. Love on Top by Dakyissa Cleon

Love is the best gift we were blessed to give and receive. Simple acts of love can change someone’s day, week, year, and even life. I challenge you this month to begin putting love at the top of your to do list.

5. Control your thoughts and emotions. One negative thought about yourself can lead to bad emotions and ultimately take away from your self-love.

Love Your Skin The skin is our largest organ so we must do our best to take care of it. So, here are some ways to begin loving your skin more.

Love Others We can get so consumed with what’s going on in our lives and forget to be there for others. Here are some ways to begin loving others better.

1. Stop going to sleep with your makeup on.

1. Be more giving. Not just of material things, but of your time as well. Try calling others more instead of texting. Visit more and spend quality time.

2. Start making a conscious effort to develop a proper skin care regimen. I highly suggest treating yourself to a facial sometimes.

2. Tell others you love them often. Life is so short and we have to let others know we love them before it’s too late.

3. When you see a breakout on your face, focus on caring for it as opposed to how it can get covered up with makeup.

3. Pray more for others. Whether you talk to them daily or not, one of the best things we can do for those we love is pray for them.

4. Stop using baby oil on your skin! IT CLOGS YOUR PORES! 5. Let your face breathe from makeup a few days throughout the week. Love Yourself We enter into the world through the love of our Heavenly Father. Somewhere along the line, we tend to forget the fact that we were born in love (no matter the circumstances that led to our birth). Here are some ways to begin showing yourself more love. 1. Accept your flaws and the fact that you’re not perfect. Stop beating yourself up for making mistakes.

3. Surround yourself around people who are good for you. It’s important to be mindful of the people you are around on a regular basis. You become like the five closest people to you. If they’re toxic, you will become the same way without even realizing it.

2. Get regular “me time.” It’s important to have time alone so you can reflect and have a full understanding of how to enhance yourself.

4. Spend more alone time with God. This is the best source for ensuring you know how to accept and love all of yourself.

18 |

February 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

4. Accept the flaws of others and stop being judgmental. If you love someone, it should be unconditional. Remember, all opinions don’t need to be said. 5. Be more forgiving. We may not forget what someone did, but we should never hold a grudge. It holds us in bondage and steals our peace. Well, beauties, I hope that this has given you some encouragement to begin putting love on top of your to-do list. Until next time, Stay Beautiful, Stay Strong, and Stay Positive. Your Beauty Coach and Friend, DaKyissa

getting to know...

Kristi Spalding Sales & Marketing Mgr. / Ford Center & Victory Theatre

5. What is the worst give you have received? I would have to say a bottle of wine. Not to say the gift wasn’t nice, but the problem is I don’t drink wine. You can’t make a “Vodski” (Vodka and Ski) with wine. 6. True or False: I have the cutest dog in the world. That is so very true! Tinkerbell not only has the looks, but the personality to go with them! I have to chase all the boy dogs away! 7. If you had a warning label, what would yours say? *May cause you to lose focus* 8. Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life? Mariah Carey. I mean, what female wouldn’t pick her after Carey’s amazing portrayal in the 2001 movie Glitter. She was robbed of an Oscar that year. 9. If you could go back in time to change one thing, what would it be? Mariah Carey would have been nominated for and won an Oscar in 2001.

1. What is your favorite thing about your career? What I love about the entertainment industry is the fact that no two days are the same. One day Elsa from Frozen is right outside my office and the next a guy dressed up like a rat is trying to run away from catwoman beating him with a whip. 2. If you were a superhero, what powers would you have? I would definitely read minds….although, there are some people I would need to turn my powers off for. I would have to have control of when, who and for how long. 3. How long does it take for you to get ready in the morning?

Literally ten minutes. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Call the fashion police; I don’t care. 4. If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce? All households would have Ski, Bud Light and Grippos delivered weekly. That’s what taxes would be for.

t’s no secret that Lamasco is one of Evansville’s best venues for live music, featuring both touring acts and local favorites. The recent expansion has allowed for an even bigger party, but it’s not just the music and super fun staff bringing in the crowds. Their pizza is killer, the wings are excellent, and their juicy burgers still rule. The menu doesn’t stop there, however. From breakfast (served all day) to sandwiches, salads, soups, and a load of crispy appetizers (watch out for the loaded cheese fries - they’re addictive), Lamasco is on top of their game. Line cook Ellison Smith clearly loves his job all three items served were neatly plated, hot and fresh. The first dish offered up was handbreaded, deep-fried mushrooms. Crunchy and well-seasoned, these little guys are more than tasty (and don’t worry about the mushrooms themselves being slimy or mushy). Served with a side of Tiger Sauce (a creamy mayo

horseradish), they’re a great way to start your meal. Next up: Ultimate Loaded Nachos. I could probably survive on nachos alone if need be, and theirs are fantastic. On a hefty bed of crunchy tortilla chips, there’s seasoned taco meat, fresh lettuce, diced onion, green peppers, spicy jalapenos, shredded cheese, and creamy queso. Clearly meant to be shared, this very generous portion of nacho perfection is served with a side of salsa and sour cream. And for the grand finale - a Breakfast Burrito. This beast is no joke. I didn’t bring a scale, but picking up the plate is like lifting weights. The flour tortilla is smothered in queso, housing scrambled eggs, peppers, onions, mushrooms, ham, bacon, and sausage. With sour cream and salsa on the side, it’s definitely fit for a

Milano Italian Cuisine, located adjacent to the Ford Center, serves Evansville’s bustling business crowd by day and hosts cloth-napkin, candle-lit dinners by night. Since 2001, the Hachem family has proven their dedication to provide the area with traditional dishes and energetic hospitality. My visit was during lunch hours when they have pizza by the hefty slice, calzones, pastas, and a self-serve salad bar. This is no ordinary pizza, however, with dough and sauces made in-house. My personal favorite is the Greek, with alfredo, mozzarella, fresh spinach, tomato, and feta. Special seasonings, including garlic, make this piece of pie burst with flavor, but not in an overwhelming sense, and the fresh dough - a medium thickness - holds the

toppings with a light, cheesy crunch. A perfect complement to crispy salad topped with homemade Greek dressing and buttery garlic roll, it’s an absolutely crave-worthy creation. Be sure to also check out their calzones, with blends of cheeses, meats, and veggies folded neatly into buttered dough and browned to perfection. With such a busy lunch crowd and reasonable prices, the fresh fares go quickly. Fortunately, so does the service! Also a great place for a romantic or family dinner, Milano’s features an extended menu including appetizers, with pasta dishes such as Lasagna Bolognese, Veal Parmesana, Chicken Alla Marsala, Linguini Pescatore (a mixed seafood dish cooked with garlic, mushrooms, lemon, and white wine), and so much more. With ingredients clearly listed on the menu, it’s simple to navigate for vegetarians and

those with specific diets. As a family owned and operated restaurant, they have a kids’ menu, and of course, mouthwatering Italian desserts like Cannoli (a creamy fried pastry) and Tiramisu (layered coffee/cocoa flavored cake). For my next visit: Eggplant Parmesana, a rarity in our area. Stop in, say hello to Rafic, have a glass of wine, and enjoy the Milano experience. You won’t be disappointed. Once you’re satisfied, check out catering and party options. Takeout is available, and delivery is provided by Dinein-Delivery at didevv.com. To peruse their full menu, visit milanositaliancuisine.com. Saluti! - Whitney Patterson Hours: Mon-Fri 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for lunch/ 4:30 p.m.-9 p.m. for dinner/ Sat dinner only/ closed Sun.

It’s February and we are officially in the dog days of winter - that time of year when stouts and porters are at their highest sales volume. A dark, heavy beer rich in flavor is great during these colder months. I recently spoke with Gerst Haus Bar Manager, Paul Ankenbrand, and he told me that he has a great selection of stouts and porters on tap right now which doesn’t surprise me. Most locations that know great craft beer - including us good folks at Beef’s - will ensure they have the best winter beers available. With that in mind, here are our recommendations for those who enjoy the rich flavors that come with stouts and porters. Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout - Brewed since 1994, the Black Chocolate Stout has become a modern classic, heralded the world over. Malted with Canadian 2-row, caramel malt, malted wheat and a blend of American roasted malts and barleys, it’s got a perfect flavor for stout lovers. Brooklyn uses Willamette and American Fuggle hops and ages this beer for several months before allowing it to be served. 10% ABV / 100 rating on Ratebeer.com Southern Tier 2X Presso - Espresso is a drink that’s not for the faint of heart. 2x Presso is considered by many to be a perfect milk stout. Featuring a thick, full bodied flavor that tastes of chocolate, coffee and cream, this seriously heavy beer also contains espresso beans and lemon peels. The result is a stout so black, so rich and so creamy, it will make you scream for more. 7.5% ABV / 93 rating on Ratebeer.com The best part about stouts and porters is how they add character to the foods with which you pair them. If you go out to Gerst Haus, try the Brooklyn Stout with their German chocolate cake; here at Beef’s you definitely want to try the molten lava chocolate cake with a scoop of ice cream along with the Southern Tier.

Startup Weekend Evansville: Warriors Wanted! by Brian K. Bordeau Instructor in Business / Entrepreneurship, USI Romain College of Business Indiana’s largest entrepreneurial event is back for the fifth year running, February 19-21 How do you get good ideas for startups? Paul Graham, an entrepreneur, programmer, writer, and investor has been asked this question several times as have I. Recently, I read a short essay from Paul and he said, “I’d like to reply with another question: why do people think it’s hard to come up with ideas for startups? That might seem a stupid thing to ask. Why do they think it’s hard? If people can’t do it, then it is hard, at least for them. Right? Well, maybe not. What people usually say is not that they can’t think of ideas, but that they don’t have any. That’s not quite the same thing. It could be the reason they don’t have any is that they haven’t tried to generate them. I think this is often the case. I think people believe that coming up with ideas for startups is very hard - that it must be very hard - and so they don’t try to do it. They assume ideas are like miracles: they either pop into your head or they don’t.” Mr. Graham also asserts, “You need three things to create a successful startup: to start with good people, to make

something customers actually want, and to spend as little money as possible.” All three of these “things” are key attributes of the Startup Weekend Evansville (SWE) idea development process. SWE spans the

course of a weekend (approximately 54 hours), and is generally composed of 60-100 participants. In addition to SWE participants (otherwise known as ‘Weekend Warriors’), the event attracts entrepreneurial speakers, mentors, final pitch panelists, and

various sponsors, investors, and company representatives. A good share of teams end up working together beyond the startup weekend to build a fully operating startup and others take with them the boot camp entrepreneurial educational experience

importantly, it makes entrepreneurs - who should be the rock stars - feel isolated from their peers, their support and the rest of the community. Another contributing factor to this feeling of isolation was the lack of robust communication between

and a network of like minds. The goal of the event is to build something sustainable after the three days, so we want these startups to become as realistic, successful, and tangible as possible when the event is over.

entrepreneurial programs, entrepreneurial peers and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Sounds like a cool event, right? Entering our fifth year, SWE 5.0 is the largest event of its kind in Indiana. Why have you not attended? Maybe you have not heard of SWE. This is another issue of why ideas do not get explored and efficiently and effectively launch. Anecdotal evidence exists locally from my encounters with would-be entrepreneurs, new Evansville transplants, and students regarding the lack of awareness of entrepreneurial resources in our community and the non-connectivity of initiatives and opportunities. When looking at a few entrepreneurial impact reports from Midwest states, there exists some common views of polled interviewees which I believe are very reflective of our community perceptions: frustration at the silo-ed nature of the entrepreneurial community. This is a significant risk standing in the way of launching an entrepreneurial community and inhibits the community from developing a cohesive culture and using resources efficiently. Most

Fostering Startup Density - this is a main objective of SWE. Startup Weekend Evansville, working in tandem with our host university, USI, is providing a unique platform for all persons to engage in the healthy development of our startup ecosystem, explore your ideas, and become aware of entrepreneurial resources available to you. SWE provides a neutral “playground” for all persons to intersect and crosspollinate ideas, relationships, and resources for a more cohesive ecosystem.

‘Weekend Warrior’ and take a simple step to explore your creativity. I invite you to come participate and support this 54-hour event, February 19-21, 2016 at the USI Business & Engineering Center. Your ideas could win you valuable prizes such as: four hours of marketing consulting from Thrive Marketing Strategies; exclusive article in the USI Romain College of Business News Magazine; two years of secure website hosting and $500 of software services from Lieberman Technologies; exclusive interview podcast from Evansville Podcast; idea development scholarships from Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville; four hours of legal services consulting from the Law Office of Doug Briody; priority consideration for the Indiana University Maurer Intellectual Property Clinic; exclusive pitch opportunity at Evansville Tech-On-Tap; four hours of financial consulting from Solomon CFO Solutions and more. You can make a valid contribution to our ecosystem by just showing up, having fun, and participating to demonstrate your support of this entrepreneurial effort that is changing lives, changing communities, and changing our future, one idea at a time! Bryan K. Bordeau For tickets and more info, visit http://bit. ly/evvstartup. Prices start at just $25 and include all materials, swag, food, drink, and full access to the weekend event. The USI Business & Engineering Center is located on the USI campus: 8600 University Blvd. in Evansville.

“Ideas are a dime a dozen. People who implement them are priceless.” What a great quote by Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc. In a Forbes article by Amy Rees Anderson she writes, “The world is full of incredible ideas that never go anywhere because great ideas are useless without someone full of passion to implement them.” We realize that implementing an idea can be intimidating, but taking that first step forward is the most important thing you can do to get your idea off the ground. Bar Etiquette 101 (or How to Get Served at the Club)

Tough love from a local drink slinger who just wants you to have a good time - and to stop yelling

Y

ou’ve been working all week. Finally, it’s Friday night and the crew is ready to hit the club and burn it down. The dance floor is packed. Drinks! You need drinks, ASAP! The bar is surrounded, three people deep and everyone wants service NOW. Here are some simple guidelines to help you get that drink as expeditiously as possible. What I am talking about, essentially, is bar etiquette. Please realize that the bartender is working as hard as he/she can. We are trying our absolute best to put a cocktail or beer in every patron’s thirsty hand as fast as humanly possible. It’s a terrifically stressful job. Normally, the bartender is working a certain section of the bar, working right to left (or left to right). So don’t be offended if you push through a crowd of people to get to the bar and get skipped. The bartender is simply going through the motions, serving those who were there before you. We generally know who has been waiting the longest. Don’t wave money in the air; don’t yell “Hey” over and over again; don’t yell the

46 |

bartender’s name. In fact, don’t yell anything at all. As we are making drinks, we are adding up cash-totals in our head or trying to keep a list of six different shots that need to be made straight. When you yell or distract us, it just slows the whole process down. It’s implied that everyone at the bar is waiting to be served. We will get to you as soon as we can, I promise. The best thing you can do to be served quickly is to stand at the bar and wait for the bartender to make eye contact with you. We want to serve you, trust me. A little patience goes a long way. The other, more obvious way to get that VIP treatment you crave: tipping. I realize that not everyone believes in tipping workers in the service industry. However, this is the system that we are working/living in. Like it or not, it’s expected of you. Obviously, you aren’t legally required to tip, but if you don’t, I hope you are very patient, because you are definitely getting served last. If you are ordering your first drink of the night and you tell the bartender to “hook it up,” you are more likely to get an annoyed

February 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

look than more alcohol. You can always ask for a “long pour” which will get more booze in your drink, but it will also cost you an extra dollar or two. Asking for a “tall” or “light ice” will not get you any more liquor, either. A better plan is to tip well for your first drink. The bartender will notice (believe me, we definitely notice what you are tipping) and your next drink will be nice and stout, and you don’t have to ask for any special treatment at all. One dollar per drink is a pretty good guideline for a city like Evansville (and yes that means if you order five Jack and Cokes, you should leave $5). Drinks that require multiple components (like Long Island Iced Teas and Liquid Cocaines) take more time to make and the tip should be appropriately larger. If you order a large round containing a variety of different drinks/ beers/shots that will take the bartender several minutes to finish while dirtying tons of shakers and strainers; you should tip a bit more for that as well. Also, if you order a round of 10 Patron shots, keep the total bill in mind and tip based off of that, not off of the fact that you’ve only ordered “one round” (because that “one round” cost $80). You don’t have to tip like you’re Floyd Mayweather. Just show that you appreciate the service and we will not forget you. And lastly, please don’t try to get anything for free. We are working FOR someone who owns the liquor we are serving. It isn’t ours to give away. You’re putting our jobs in jeopardy when you do this, and frankly, it’s offensive. In summary: If you keep all of these things in mind (which, in my opinion should mostly be common sense), you should get your drinks as quickly as possible so you can get your ass back out on the dance floor where it belongs. Sincerely, Your Grateful Bartender *The name has been withheld to protect the innocent.

or almost 30 years, Colby’s Fine Food and Spirits has been serving downtown Owensboro, incorporating their seasonal dishes with wine pairings. Set apart from other local establishments, they offer a menu with aged meats in a building established in the 1900’s. A tried and true Kentucky staple, Colby’s has all of the soul-pleasing menu items for a northern soul-food/ island experience, incorporating southern items like hand-battered chicken, shrimp and grits, and Hawaiian fare such as blackened salmon. From nachos with homemade chips and chili to crab, shrimp, and mushroom dip in cream sauce with garlic bread, their

appetizer menu alone is worth the visit. But don’t forget about their in-house fried chips, loaded with cheddar and Jack cheese, bacon, sour cream, and chives. For a New Orleans twist, check out the gumbo - a blend of shrimp, scallops, chicken, Andouille sausage and rice, slow simmered and topped with scallions. If you’re looking for a lighter option, try the wedge salad or chicken salad - homemade diced chicken with fresh fruit, topped with an in-house orange-apricot sauce and toasted almonds. For the main course, try a Hawaiian RibEye marinated in special spices, pineapple juice, and soy sauce, or linguine with Cajun shrimp and scallops, tossed with tomatoes,

mushrooms, and green onions. To finish off your Colby’s experience, choose from a plethora of homemade desserts, including chocolate bourbon pecan pie, apple dumpling, or molten chocolate cake. Can’t decide? They have a dessert sampler with banana pie, key lime, cheesecake and ala mode molten cake, or skip it and try a beverage from their barista bar such as an espresso, shake, latte, or smoothie. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Mon-Thurs 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; FriSat 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Call for delivery, to-go orders, and catering options, and browse colbysfinefoodandspirits.com for their full menu.

At the forefront of Owensboro’s burgeoning music scene, Blackford Creek was formed 15 years ago by lead singer and guitarist Dan Hall and bass player Robert Mattingly. However, they were missing pieces of the musical puzzle. Enter drummer Daniel McDaniel and fiddle player extraordinaire, Jake Holder; Blackford Creek was reborn and ready to rock. Since solidifying the lineup, they have opened the Big O music festival and pumped up the crowd for Jake Owen, Colt Ford, Love and Theft and Justin Moore as well as shared the stage with Confederate Railroad, David Alan

I belonged there. Music runs through my veins and anytime I tried to put it down for whatever reason, something wouldn’t let me.” Thankfully, he followed his muse, because Blackford Creek simply wouldn’t be the same without his vocals and that driving honky-tonk sound he has mastered. And somehow, even with his busy schedule, he still finds time on the side to teach personal guitar lessons. Robert, a huge fan of Led Zeppelin, grew up playing music in his parents’ basement with his brother and his friends. They had a

of a KISS tribute band who happened to be the director of his church play. In turn, the director’s wife taught him the power of music and explained that if you do not exhibit that type of passion while performing it will not translate to your fans. Despite having no one to play with, Daniel would use headphones and an electronic drum kit and eventually picked up the guitar and the mandolin; he also became an amazing harmonist. As Dan explains, “When we picked Daniel up, he became the substance and the backbone of the band in a very short period of time. He backs up every member of this band vocally.” Jake Holder’s father was both a songwriter and a guitar player. In grade school, Jake took a hearing test, and the woman administering it told his father that his son’s hearing was well above average. In fact, his ability to differentiate between tones set him on the path to become an excellent musician. Raised on Jim Croce and John Prine, Jake played with his father throughout childhood, an education that served him well as the sound of his fiddle seems to effortlessly color the musical spectrum of everything Blackford Creek produces.

Coe, Trent Tomlinson, Twang and Round, Georgette Jones and Mary Sarah. In addition, Blackford Creek has been named the “Tri-State’s #1 Band” by Jon Burden Promotions and will be a big part of the upcoming Mud Fest in late April. During my interview with the band, I discovered that each member has a longstanding relationship with music. Dan attributes the purity and vibrato in his voice to early days in church. When asked what led him to the spotlight, he replied, “I had worked a lot of jobs, but it didn’t seem like

guitarist and drummer, but no bass player. Figuring that four strings would be easier to play than six, Robert filled the void and eventually joined a band called Fat Finger. While hosting an open mic night, he met Dan who knew a couple of the members. Impressed by Robert’s playing, he started calling him for rehearsal and slowly Blackford Creek began to take shape. Then they met Daniel; it was as if an explosion went off. In his 10 years of drumming, Daniel has literally beaten three sets of drums to death. He was taught the basics by a member

Night after night, these four incredible musicians are creating quite the stir around these parts and they want it made clear that they like to hang out with their fans as much as they enjoy playing for them. Dan adds, “Every member of this band is absolutely irreplaceable and our manager, Rick “Rocko” Roberts, is our wing man. He makes sure that our shows go off without a hitch, which plays a huge role in our success.” An album of original songs is in the works, so be sure to catch Blackford Creek locally while you still can. Professor by day, DJ by night: Meet Owensboro’s DJ prof G Western Kentucky’s coolest educator packs the classroom and the dance floor By weekday, Chad Gesser is an associate professor of sociology at Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC). On the weekends, though, he moves from the front of a classroom to behind a DJ table as he makes his transformation from Professor Gesser to DJ prof G.

Bluegrass Music Museum 2016 Spring Concert Series

While some may find these two aspects of his life to be disparate, Gesser easily finds the connection. “Being a sociologist means researching and being sensitive to human behavior. I pick up on things; I’m good at presenting and reinterpreting that information to others,” Gesser says. “When planning and DJing events, I work closely with clients to pick up on what type of an event they want to achieve. I then reinterpret their ideas through the presentation of lighting and music.”

Annual run of performances spotlights the very best in regional and national talent Just a matter of weeks after the 2015 Fall Concert Series came to a fantastic conclusion with back-to-back December shows by The Giving Tree Band (hailing from just outside Chicago) and New York’s Driftwood, the Spring Concert Series is already up and running, continuing the effort to help fund the IBMM’s educational music programs as well as cover general operating expenses at the museum. Late January saw the opening performance by Nashville’s Sheriff Scott & The Deputies, a dynamic quartet intent on stretching the boundaries of bluegrass. Next up on February 12 is the Bankesters, the very definition of a musical family. Led by Phil and Dorene Bankester, this homespun band from Carbondale, IL is filled out by the couple’s three daughters and son-in-law - all incredible players who click together as only a family can. Also on the bill this month, Lindsey Lou & The Flatbellys will take the IBMM stage on February 26. Described as keeping “one foot in the Great Lakes State and the soul of Motown, and one in Music City, USA: Nashville, TN,” these four adventurous musicians dare to mix it up, combining elements of blues, folk, jazz and soul even busting out the occasional techno beat. Come prepared to hear something out of the ordinary and find out why NPR named their Mountain Stage performance one of the very best of 2015. On the horizon, March will bring concerts by Jon Stickley Trio and Sierra Hull followed by Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley in April; May’s grand finale starring the incomparable Pokey LaFarge is already sold out! Gesser has not only provided the soundtrack to wedding receptions, reunions and parties (including the New Year’s Eve Balloon Drop at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History), he has also collaborated with local musicians Heath & Molly and created and performed a music and video experience for Brescia University’s Third Tuesday Writer’s Coffeehouse. Gesser, who is a husband and father of four says, “Some people watch Netflix, surf the Internet, work on cars or knit. DJing is a creative outlet where I can work at home while being with my family. I’ve found this creative expression to be rejuvenating; it helps keep me fresh. It helps me to be a better professor, husband and father.” - Missy Brownson Gesser will DJ the Pineapple Ball again next month. For more information about DJ prof G, visit djprofg.com.

The Alpha Incident

“The metal scene in the community is so small - everyone knows everybody. It’s been like the same 30 people for the past 15 years.” - Daniel Welman, bassist for The Alpha Incident When Daniel Wade decided to form a new progressive metal band a couple of years ago, he didn’t have to look far for members. In fact, the self-taught guitarist was already familiar with virtually all of the area musicians in the scene. Some he had played with previously while others were on his radar through social media or from attending the limited number of local metal shows staged. Still, it was important to get the right mix of people for his vision of what would become The Alpha Incident - a heavy, conceptual band with complex riffing. After spending 18 months performing with Blood Tribe, Wade was eager to write his own material, inspired by the idea of basing an album on the classic Stanley Kubrick film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. To that end, he first contacted drummer Thomas VanBibber who had played in both Worst Case Scenario (with soon-to-be AI bassist, Daniel Welman) and a popular covers band called Prowler. “I was actually getting paid a decent amount with them,” he says. “But then Danny got a hold of me, and I loved the way the new music was sounding. Plus, he told me that one of his biggest influences was Between the Buried and Me, and I was like, ‘yeah, I can do this.’ So I quit and joined Alpha Incident.”

Wade also located a guitarist and vocalist but eventually they departed and the search was on once again. So when Michael Morrow - a former southern metal singer back from a five year stint in the military - ran into Wade at Coconuts Records, the two old high school

joined.” Morrow duly rewrote all of the lyrics of the previous vocalist, Patrick Casey, bringing a greater sense of melody to balance out the full-on throat shredding. Interestingly, Casey has since returned to the fold as a second guitarist, happy to step back from the spotlight. Providing the all-important bottom end, Daniel Welman came to Alpha Incident on the heels of recording an EP with another local band, Night Shift. Having previously played with VanBibber and already familiar with Wade and Morrow, he was quickly drafted as the new bassist. “The metal scene in the community is so small - everyone knows everybody,” he says. “It’s been like the same 30 people for the past 15 years.” With the lineup finally set, Wade and the guys began work on Odyssey, a six track album full of mind-bending songs with no conventional structure and virtually no repetition of riffs. The complexity of the material is wholly impressive but also presents a challenge for the band - not just in terms of performance but even more so in finding an audience, especially here in Evansville. “Metal-wise, you still just get people liking Pantera, etc. we’re a little weirder than that,” Wade says. “We’ve had people come up and tell us that we’re really good, but...” Welman puts it more directly: “We assume there’s a fan base for this type of metal, but we haven’t seen them (laughs).” Odyssey is complete and ready for mastering. A release date is pending but the album should be available within the next few months. In the meantime, you can catch The Alpha Incident live at PG Cafe on February 20 alongside Blood Tribe, Blind Observations and Where Troubles Fall. Follow The Alpha Incident on Facebook.

The Cold Stares sign to SmallStone Records

Area blues-rock duo finally seals the deal, preps for new EP and album

In a three-part N4U series last year, Chris Tapp, guitarist and vocalist for Nashville’s The Cold Stares (formerly based in southern Indiana), chronicled the highs and many, many lows of the band’s experiences with navigating the complexities of the music industry - specifically, his and drummer Brian Mullin’s attempts to secure a fair recording contract, a pursuit that often seemed utterly pointless. Time and again, the two came face to face with a harsh reality: it really IS all about money; ‘artistry’ and ‘integrity’ are just simply words. But despite all the soul-crushing meetings with label heads, Tapp and Mullins kept their focus on the music, always moving forward. And finally, it’s paid off. The Cold Stares recently signed to SmallStone Records out of Detroit with plans to release their fourth album, White Crow, on September 5, 2016. Work will begin in April at the famed Ardent Studios in Memphis where an incredible roster of artists have recorded, including Jack White, ZZ Top and Led Zeppelin. “The thing about SmallStone is they have been consistently putting out good heavy rock albums for 20 years,” Tapp said. “There is no changing of the guard every six months with A&R turnover, or some sudden shift away from heavy guitar driven music.” Mullins is equally impressed by the label’s way of doing business. “With SmallStone we have complete creative control. They dug what they heard and basically gave us the tools to make the absolute best album we could make.” To hold over fans impatiently waiting for the new album, The Cold Stares will release Dark Dark Blue, a 5-track EP of new material in March. For more info, visit thecoldstares.com and follow them on Facebook.

film So, I started writing Lattie at that point and had about a month to get it ready in time for Eddy to show up and start filming. How difficult was it to secure locations for the film? Before the script was even done, I reached out to Lavender and asked if she wanted to help produce the film, and she agreed. That was the key to getting locations approved - she handled all of that. She secured permission to shoot in the bus station and Lic’s (Deli & Ice Cream). Honestly, the film wouldn’t have happened without her and Eddy. Plus, the community was great. Getting permission to shoot inside the bus station was a really big deal for us because it was written into the script. The pacing of Lattie - much like your other films - is slow and deliberate, similar to ambient music. That’s a great analogy. Intentionally, I wanted the opening 10 minutes or so of the movie to throw the audience into the main character’s world - I wanted to set the pace for the rest of the film. I also had the idea that really long cuts would happen. Whether or not there was a story or dialogue was second to my intention to create a film that felt complete like a whole piece.

Lattie

A film by Blackstrap Pictures Local independent film collective Blackstrap Pictures recently called it a wrap on a new hour-long feature. Titled after the main character played by Director Kevin Chenault, Lattie documents the final days of a thirtysomething man diagnosed with an apparently terminal illness. Understandably shell-shocked by his death sentence, he fumbles through life, attempting to both hide from the world and explore new relationships before getting unexpectedly entangled in a murder-mystery that adds a whole new element to the film. Shot locally on a shoestring budget with a skeleton crew, including Executive Producer Lavender Timmons, Director of Photography/ Camera Operator Eddy Scully and Set Designer Emily McArdle, Lattie is a testament to what can be achieved when all hands are on board. Its minimal dialogue and highly effective use of music transport the viewer into Lattie’s often lonely and desperate - yet strangely lifeaffirming - existence. Chenault kindly spoke with News4U about his experiences making the film, pulling off his first starring role and more. When did Lattie first get off the ground? Lattie was a short script that I wrote last winter. At the time, I didn’t know that it was

going to be my next film project. What lit the fire, however, was that my friend Eddy Scully who shot the film - and also shot one of Blackstrap’s previous films, Different Drum was coming into town for the holidays. I asked him if he would be interested in shooting another film on his break, and he was game.

You’re in front of the camera for the first time on this film. When I was writing the film, I wasn’t really writing it with myself in mind. Somewhere around the midpoint of writing the script, I started to think about who could play this character. To be honest, Lattie is supposed to be dying during the film and at the time, I wasn’t looking that great physically - my hair was wild and it seemed like I was becoming this character in real life; so maybe I should just do it. I had doubts all the way up until filming, but I discussed the situation with Emily; I expressed my fear that I couldn’t pull it off. And she convinced me to just go ahead and do it - to not even second-guess myself. She said, “You wrote the film, you know what you want from the character - you can make it happen.” For news on the release of Lattie, follow Blackstrap Pictures on Faceook and check out blackstrappictures.com to learn about their previous films, including Young Islands, The Strangers and Different Drum.

Brooke Spitler Flirting Laws for Women

I’m an introvert, which makes most of my attempts at flirting a complete disaster. So, through the years I’ve had to determine where, when, and how it’s done. I started observing it in its natural habitat, the bar - a magical place where at a particular time of night, like the clock strike for Cinderella, humanity dissolves away with shots of Fireball and everyone turns into their natural state or a sexy pumpkin. There you’ll find two kinds of males that like to flirt. The first is the overly confident narcissistic male who flirts out of the kindness of his heart because, well, he doesn’t want you to miss out on this sweet action. The second is the self-loathing, narcissistic male paradox who flirts to confirm he’s not just a glob of sadness.

Micah Cain The Internet

Remember the fledgling days of the internet back in the 90s? Back when it was shiny and new and, admittedly, terrible? Still, it was amazing and unbelievable. The first time someone showed you the internet you lost your mind. Here’s this thing, it’s called America Online. You pay $1000 a month and you can join a chat room that’s full of people just like you or worse. You can talk to these people for as long as you want and the best part is your phone won’t ring for as long as you stay on the internet! And if you happen to forget about this miracle, don’t worry. Everyone with access to your mailing address is going to send you the latest AOL disk every day for the rest of your life. Well, it wouldn’t last forever, unfortunately. Nobody’s seen an AOL disk in years. The internet didn’t go away, though. Oh, no! It mutated. It’s changed exponentially in the two and a half decades since. The internet became like the guy who is responsible for keeping you occupied while the rest of your friends set up the surprise party. You keep trying to leave but the internet keeps frantically showing you things that keep you there. Oh, that chat thing is pretty cool, internet, but I think I’m going to go out and see a movie now. Wait, wait, wait! What if I told you I have every movie you could possibly want to see right here? Hmm...well okay, I guess I’ll watch a movie here but then I should go to the bank before it closes. Wait, wait, wait! What if I told you that your bank is in here too and you can just take care of that while you watch this movie and listen to this new album and buy some new furniture and order dinner and pay all your bills and get a new girlfriend and jerk off? Next thing you know, it’s been 25 years, the party’s over, and the internet is sitting in the corner laughing at you.

With those two lovely options in mind, now let’s look at the laws for women that determine successful flirting. First, be attractive. No average-looking Janes are getting hit on unless they cause a commotion to draw the male. My favorite strategy is the disposal of the bra by propelling it at the first taxidermied animal in sight, preferably something with antlers or horns. The second and final law is the most important. Only open your mouth to smile or laugh at the male’s long explanations of subjects he’s most likely not mastered. Speaking your mind is likely to scare the male. If you’re wondering where all the nice humans are and why there seems to be a haze of desperation lingering around you as if there’s cat hair on your face, you’re not alone. Do what all the introverts are doing! Give up and switch to online dating where a single wink emoji turns any conversation into a flirtation. Just remember when you meet your matches, normal people don’t wink – never, ever.

writers Welcome to the Evansville Historical Tour By John Thurgood Welcome to the Evansville Historical Tour. Beginning with the beautiful McCurdy Hotel, built in 1916, it stands as a testament to the brilliance that has always graced our beautiful waterfront. Guests from all over the state have patronized its rooms, from governors to early aristocrats, visiting for our mild autumns. It also happens to be the same location where my ex-girlfriend told me she never wanted to see me again. As we continue, you’ll notice the brick paving that covers this length of First Street. Some of these bricks date as far back as the 1860’s, when this street was first laid. That dark maroon color you see in some of the bricks—the ones that seem almost black—that pigment comes from the type of sand used by the brickmakers back then. It is also the same color as my ex-girlfriend’s cold and lifeless heart. Up ahead, you’ll see the location of the famous Reitz Home. Built in 1872, it’s a true testament to just how beautiful these early era Victorian homes were. I suggest taking a tour sometime. But be careful not to take someone else’s girlfriend. Now, you don’t seem like the backstabbing, self-loathing type, but I used to think I was a pretty good judge of character. Boy was I wrong!

Corey Martin “Special”

On a recent visit with my 11 year old daughter to Build-a-Bear Workshop, or as I like to call it, Stuffed Animal Hell, I witnessed an epic meltdown of a little girl in line in front of us. She was six or seven and kept screaming about more clothes for her sloth doll (a sloth doll?!?). Her father had told her ‘no’ and was trying to explain that the tiny little t-shirt cost more than a 3-pack of Hanes at Walmart, but she just doubled down, pumped up the volume, and he folded. His shoulders slumped and he said, “Ok honey, get the shirt.” Then he glanced at the other adults, clearly embarrassed. He looked back at her, tried to put some cheer in his voice and said, “I’m only getting you this because you’re so special.” And there it was. Special. One of the most over used words in the parent dictionary. I’ve always told my daughter the truth, and the truth is that she isn’t special. Not yet anyways. She’s unique, like we all are but to be special is something you work towards and become. Publicly embarrassing your parents for an 11 dollar t-shirt is definitely not special, but maybe that little girl was practicing for later in life. After all, Kim Kardashian publicly embarrassed her parents to start her career and now she’s a millionaire.

You’ll notice along the sidewalk here, in front of most of these older houses, a large stone and stanchion sitting beside the curb. Well, back in the olden-times, those were used to step down from your horse and tie up your bridle. These were necessary, because not every visit was worth stabling your horse. For instance, if you were just stopping by to say hello to a friend, and discovered he and your ex-girlfriend naked and sprawled across the dining room table (I mean people have to eat off of that table!), you might not want to stable your horse beforehand. It was more out of convenience than anything. Moving along...

Ask the Pastor

Lobeck’s

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

Lowdown

What does the Bible say about tattoos?

(In the spirit of full transparency, the writer discloses that he has a tattoo depicting the Trinity on his right calf.) “My mom said the bible says not to get tattoos... is that true?” “’Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.” – Leviticus 19:28. If you are a literalist, your momma is right. By the same token, you won’t be doing a lot of the things you are currently doing, like eating the things you are currently eating, planting your fields in the way you are currently planting your fields, or doing much of anything on Saturdays (or Sundays). The admonition in Leviticus is really about practicing other religious traditions than the ones being practiced by ancient Israel. It was a call to faithfulness, of being unique, of honoring one’s connection to God. Literalism, and its sibling legalism, strive to accomplish many things, not the least of which is control, dividing people from one another, the establishment of fear, and the promotion of guilt. In contrast, the idea of “grace” (yes, the amazing one in that song with the bagpipes) asks us to live lives of forgiveness, compassion, understanding, and acceptance. We live that way because that is the way God reaches out to us. Honor your mother. Assure her that your tattoo will be safe and clean and not terribly offensive. Tell her you aren’t having it put somewhere embarrassing on your body. And then, put her kind heart at ease and go to church with her.

Monthly musings on music, movies and pop culture

Farewell To Kings If you’re a rock fan, 2016 has gotten off to a very sad start. First, the world of heavy music was forever altered with the passing of metal icon, Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister. This was a hard blow. However, considering the fact that he played shows almost until the day he died, Lemmy left this world in true Lemmy fashion: showing no weakness, with a middle finger raised to anything attempting to slow him down, including cancer. Lemmy passed two days after finally being diagnosed. There were no tears; he wouldn’t have approved. There was only deep respect for a life lived 100% on his own terms. A second very unexpected tragedy came a couple of weeks later. I woke up one morning to my wife informing me that David Bowie had died. It felt like my stomach sank into my feet. How could David Bowie have died? He just released a fantastic album a matter of days ago. There weren’t even rumors of poor health. In reality, Bowie had fought an 18-month battle with cancer. During this time, he kept his condition fiercely private, using his limited time to engage in manic-creativity that rivals his mid-70’s peak. He created his farewell to the world, refusing to succumb before its completion and release. There was an emotional afternoon of indulging in all things Bowie in order to process this. So why do I feel compelled to write about these events? Bowie and Lemmy both lived life as they saw fit. They both stood by artistic choices that damaged their careers at times. You never heard them apologizing on Twitter for offending anyone, and they didn’t bother whoring themselves out in order to remain relevant. These were artists and staunch individualists. They weren’t celebrities in the current sense. They had integrity and a commitment to their craft. No one bought a Motorhead ticket this past year out of sympathy, just as no one purchased the new Bowie album because they thought it would be his last. There was an intentional choice to be judged solely on the quality of their work until the very end - a choice to make the most of each remaining day. That is something to be respected, admired, and emulated. So with a tear in my eye, I say a fond farewell to Kings. Ziggy has gone back home, and Lemmy is blowing out eardrums in hell, because Satan is too intimidated to ask him to turn it down. J. Robert Lobeck \\m//

“Death will be a great relief. No more interviews.” -Katharine Hepburn We live in a strange world. Some starve and have never watched a television, let alone browsed YouTube videos of their favorite bands on Chromecast for hours at a time, or melted into their beds watching re-runs of Roseanne on Netflix. But here we are, in our disgustingly privileged existence, ranting and grieving over celebrity deaths from behind our laptops, smudging our MAC cosmetics, caterwauling over some stranger whom we’ve never met and positively could not give two shits about us. Life’s just so not fair, amirite? So what is it? Grief is a complicated animal. I’ll admit it, I still get a little mistyeyed on Michael Jackson’s birthday, and I may have begged my roommate to come home from work when Patrick Swayze passed. We grow up watching their movies, identifying with their music, losing ourselves in their books; it’s nostalgia, pure and simple. Whitney Houston was not your momma, David Bowie was not your uncle. We put these people on a pedestal and forget that they’re just that. Flesh and blood. And not always good people. So let’s recognize this grief for what it is - the halting of any more expressed talent from an individual whose work we appreciate. And maybe, if you’re experiencing loss or sadness in other areas of your life, a little bit of good ole projection. That’s totally fine. But just because someone passes away, celebrity or not, doesn’t make them a deity beyond reproach. I really dug Bowie’s music and still do, and it sucks that there won’t be new material, but that doesn’t change his sexual predation. I’m not going to be like, “I heart MJ and because his music was so great, I’m going to completely ignore all of the molestation accusations.” No. Go ahead, process the loss of art - but don’t idolize the person of someone you’ve never even met, ya weirdos. Put on their record, sit down, and be quiet. The parts you really loved about them are still very much alive. Signed, Whitney Patterson persona non grata

Tri-State Politics with Bryan Fox

Indiana and the Presidential Primaries April 22, 2008 was a historic night for Evansville - at least in terms of presidential politics. That was the night then-candidate Barack Obama spoke to a rousing crowd at Roberts Stadium after winning the Pennsylvania primary. Indiana and North Carolina were the next two states to hold their primaries on May 6. The presidential primaries in Indiana are usually an afterthought since both major parties usually have a declared winner by then, but for the Democrats, 2008 was still yet to be decided. The tri-state got more than just Obama that year. Candidate Hillary Clinton came to Princeton’s town square. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, came to Boonville to speak at the high school. With this year’s Republican primary wide open, could this be another 2008 for Indiana and the tri-state in general? Before Super Tuesday, when 13 states hold primaries/ caucuses, there are 4 states that have contests: Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada. It’s possible Ted Cruz could win Iowa, Donald Trump could win New Hampshire and Marco Rubio could win South Carolina; that would throw Super Tuesday into a state of GOP confusion. With Indiana being the 42nd state to hold its Republican primary/caucus, it could be a do or die contest for GOP candidates. Believe it or not, by late April or early May, tri-state residents might see Donald Trump at the Donut Bank, Ted Cruz at Wolf’s BBQ, or Marco Rubio at the Victoria National Golf Course in Newburgh.

Men Doing Yoga by Mark Goltiao

Owner of Evansville Power Yoga As the only male yoga studio owner in Evansville, and as a man who’s practiced yoga for nearly 18 years, I’ve always wondered why it seems men are more hesitant than women to step into a yoga studio. The 2015 Yoga Alliance Demographic Survey showed that twice as many women as men are practicing yoga. Yet the number of women versus men who are interested in practicing is almost equal. I think the difference in numbers boils down to a couple of reasons. The first reason - which I think is becoming less an issue - is the misconception that yoga isn’t physical enough. The second reason, which I think may be the bigger reason, is the concern for looking good. I think most everyone knows that strength and flexibility are vital to staying healthy. I also think that with more and more articles being published showing how athletes are using yoga to improve performance, that men are beginning to understand that yoga is a top-notch way to build that strength and flexibility. So that leaves us with the concern for looking good. Feb 27: Letters for Literacy Scrabble Smackdown The 2016 Letters for Literacy Scrabble tournament has changed its name to The Scrabble Smackdown. I’m proud to own Evansville Power Yoga, a studio that has five male instructors out of fourteen. And I can honestly say that we have a higher percentage of men practicing than other studios in the area. Over our six years in business, almost every man who has walked through the door has stayed and become a regular student. Is it because we have more male instructors? Maybe. Maybe not. I think most of the guys show up for classes regardless of the instructor. What I think it has to do with is the mindset of our studio - that we’ve consciously cultivated an environment of “come as you are” - no judgment. That makes the difference. Men at the studio see it. Women at the studio see it. So come on in to Evansville Power Yoga and experience the difference. beer reviews

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 7 Liquor Locker locations. www.Liquor-Locker.com

Schnickelfritz

Dragon’s Milk - New Holland

Carson’s Demonik

Daniel Knight • 3.75 Schnickelfritz is a Hefeweizen (German wheat ale) formula brewed in St Louis, MO. It pours a cloudy golden/yellow color with a quickly receding bubbly white head. There is just a little lacing. The aroma is not very up front and is of yeast, malts, banana and clove. The taste mimics the aroma with cracker and bread-like malts. Peppery, it’s got a distinctive yeast character and Banana esters as well. It’s very nicely done with a light body and refreshing carbonation that is smooth and drinkable. This might be one of my favorite wheat beers to date.

Daniel Knight • 4 With a name like Dragon’s Milk one can assume this Imperial Stout will make a lasting impression. It does. It pours very dark brown. There’s a reddish cast that shows as it’s looked at against light. The two finger tan head is thick and dissipates within a minute or so to a thin layer that remains until the end. There’s a lot of lacing as well. The aroma is clearly of that familiar bourbon barrel style. I also detect the 10% ABV in the smell. The flavor is boozy too with bourbon barrel right up front. There’s some sweetness well balanced with hops (31 IBUs). The subtleties are vanilla and brown sugar, coffee and chocolate. The finish is a bourbony, boozy warmth. In my opinion this is an excellent brew. If it sounds good to you, you’ll probably love it.

Daniel Knight • 3.25 This local brew pours up a semi-cloudy, golden-orange color with a generous airy two finger head. The aroma is somewhat subtle, actually, with a resiny citrus nature and some maltiness too. The taste has a lot more going on. The citrus, hops, malts and resin all arise in the flavor. The high IBU score (100) of the brew comes through the most on its finish. Maybe a little too much for my taste. I judge this to be an IPA I’d happily have again, yet… with some room for improvement. If you enjoy a good IPA you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Paul Bragin • 3 A thick white head tops this beer when poured into a traditional wheat beer glass. The beer underneath has a cloudy, golden hue typical of wheat beers. The smell of the beer contains rich notes of wheat, clove and banana. The wheat flavors remain at first when drinking the beer, followed by the banana and clove flavors, which are especially present in the finish. This beer might be good during the warmer summer months.

Paul Bragin • 4 A decent tan head crowns this black stout after pouring it in an English pub glass. The roasted malt notes are milder, with sweet scents coming through more. The roasted malt notes become a bit stronger when sipping the beer and in the finish, but the sweet notes stay also. Other brewers make bourbon barrel stouts, but this one reigns supreme. Pair it with red meat, smoked food, rich cheese or dark chocolate.

February 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick white head rests on top of this deep amber ale. The scent of hops begins before putting the glass up to your nose, with notes of both pine and citrus. The hop notes continue when drinking the beer and a little bit of spice seems to come through in the finish. The 100 IBUs in this beer might scare away novices, but hopheads will definitely want to seek this one out.

The Poet - New Holland

Daniel Knight • 4.25 The Poet is an oatmeal stout that checks in at 5.2% ABV. It pours up nearly black. The head is a creamy tan and after a few minutes settles down leaving a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. Its nose is light with aromas of roasted malts. Its flavor is of roasted malts and coffee with an expected level of bitterness. It’s light in body, very smooth and somewhat creamy with a moderate amount

of carbonation. Its finish is dry. New Holland has done a great job on this one and even though stouts in this class don’t usually impress me, I find this one flavorful, easy to drink and certain to get repeat visits.

Random Beer Facts!

Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick tan head forms on the stout when poured into a traditional English pub glass. The scent contains generous amounts of roasted malt and coffee notes. The malt and coffee notes remain when drinking the beer, with the coffee notes especially prominent during the long finish. This beer has a great smooth texture for a stout. Porter and stout lovers will want to find this one. Pair it with mushrooms, beef, softripened cheeses or chocolate.

1.) There’s about 2.5 pints of CO2 dissolved in a pint of beer. 2.) Light that’s bouncing inside the head on a pint is what makes it a different colour to the beer. 3.) When someone pulls you a pint, they are actually pushing the beer. 4.) The glass you drink out of affects the taste of your beer. 5.) When you open a bottle of beer, the air in the bottle suddenly depressurises, condensing into a tiny cloud of water vapour. http://www.factslides.com/s-Beer

movie review Who receives the most Valentine’s Day Cards? a. Mothers b. Wives c. Teachers d. Girlfriends

Star Wars: The Force Awakens In another scene, Rey apparently the new (female) Luke Skywalker - is being chased by The First Order and must escape by flying the Millennium Falcon with the enemy in hot pursuit. Again, this should sound familiar. In the original, the rebellion gang led by Hans Solo escapes Mos Eisley on the Millennium Falcon while being tracked by The Empire. We also learn that Rey possesses the power of the Jedi, but there’s no explanation of how she got this power or how she became a pilot. In yet another instance of theft, we learn that The First Order has developed a space station even bigger than the Death Star. This new space station is operational and can destroy entire planets. In the original, The Empire uses the Death Star to destroy Princess Leia’s home planet of Alderaan.

If the thought process behind The Force Awakens was to get away from the prequels and simply rewrite/steal scenes from the original, then I guess the creators succeeded. Unfortunately, it didn’t make the movie any more watchable. The new Star Wars is the worst of the franchise. It starts out with the new villain, The First Order, invading a village in hopes of retrieving remnants of a lost map. Before being captured, one of the protagonists, a Han Solo rip-off, hides the map in a droid. Sound familiar? It should. In the original Star Wars, Princess Leia hides plans to destroy the Death Star in everyone’s favorite droid, R2-D2.

The Force Awakens insults the intelligence of every Star Wars Fan. Some scenes appear to be a shotby-shot retake of the original. In addition, the classic and new characters don’t mesh well. And seriously, in 35 years Chewbacca hasn’t aged? No gray in his fur? C’mon! Of course, the cinematography is good along with the tense, expertly choreographed battle scenes. But overall, even this doesn’t save the movie from its lack of creativity. - Bryan Fox

music reviews Archy Marshall A New Place 2 Drown XL Recordings

Archy Marshall, perhaps best known under his King Krule moniker, changes things up a bit on his new album, A New Place 2 Drown. Where King Krule releases saw Marshall making music in a typical indie-rock fashion, A New Place 2 Drown is almost certainly a hip hop album - or at least something in between King Krule and hip hop. No matter how you label it, it’s fantastic - filled to the brim with head-nodding beats. Check out “Arise Dear Brother” to get a feel for the album.

Hinds

Leave Me Alone Mom + Pop

Here’s a fun album. Hinds are four women from Madrid who make really catchy garage rock. Their debut, Leave Me Alone, is poppy, fuzzy, warm and (despite the title) very inviting. If you like bands like Best Coast, Wavves, and FIDLAR, you’re going to like Leave Me Alone. That being said, the album provides nothing new and to some, could come off as another generic lo-fi rock record

This Heat Discography

Light In The Attic This Heat is an often-overlooked band from the late 70s / early 80s post-punk movement, and they are absolutely incredible. Light In The Attic is reissuing This Heat’s three wonderful records. The UK trio dabbled in metal, jazz, prog, noise…everything, and molded them together expertly. Do yourself a favor and at least check out their final album, Deceit (and keep in mind it was released in 1981). This Heat were way ahead of their time and sound more relevant than ever. - Russell Finn

The Please Please Me Year of the Horse Self-Released

Brooklyn-by-Austin’s own drummerturned-front-woman Jessie Torrisi and revolving members have done it again. Year of the Horse is an apt follow-up to previous releases, showing more depth and a darker, sultrier side of the band. Their live shows are almost uncomfortably intimate - I was front and center the last two times they graced Deerhead, blushing and rapt, leaving with a personalized kazoo. Reminiscent of late 80’s and 90’s “chick rock,” they’re the Pretenders meets the lovechild of the Cranberries and Mazzy Star (if Hope Sandoval grew some balls). The album kicks off with a sarcastic snarl in “F*ck This,” totally relatable and a perfect showcase of Torrisi’s effortlessly eclectic vocals. It’s like “Royals” with lyrics from someone who actually understands the struggle - “give me a comedown-suicide-slow song/ are you ready to sing along?” “Bad Reputation,” although carrying the same title as the Joan Jett classic, is darker and more honest, with a NIN flavor - breathy, industrial, and saccharine-sweet - “don’t try to be an inspiration/ you’re only wasting your time... do you want me now?” Gnarly heartbreak songs at their best, The Please Please Me’s repertoire is among the indie bands that continuously prove that real music is still alive and well, clawing at a brutal comeback somewhere in the world. Come back to Evansville now, please? Bridge 19 Riding on a Wire Self-Released

Hard-working Kentucky band Bridge 19 loves getting everyone in their feels with soothing harmonies and simple lyrics seeming to come from every heartbreak we’ve ever experienced. As finalists in Louisville’s “Folk Artist of the Year” award in 2015 and even sharing the Lilith Fair stage in 2011, they’re more than humble, and the new album is a much-anticipated sophomore follow-up to 2012’s The Fall Back. Attaching true folk and bluegrass elements to radio-ready pop/country, they’re a satisfying fillin for the Dixie Chicks’ hiatus. “Chain” opens with a New Orleans flare, heavy on percussion and trumpet, with lyrics describing a doomed romance and the inability to let go, leading into what feels like a sequel in “Nothing Else” - “but your touch that made me weak/ and your voice, the way you speak/ your broken smile, the way you smell/ and nothing else.” The hook keeps us sucked in, but the sisterly harmonies and light riffs make this a solid Tegan-and-Sara-esque track. “Go Back Now” clearly displays their allegiance to The Indigo Girls, and “The Lion” (my favorite track, hands-down) is more of the NOLA/gypsy stomp, making me beg for The Sweetness to have a reunion tour. No more spoilers, though- check it out on iTunes or CD Baby. Whew. Good job, y’all. Keep them coming.

David Bowie Blackstar Columbia Records

Marcus Marr & Chet Faker Work EP Detail Records

There’s this one soulful Aussie whose voice never gets old to me. After the mid-range success of his solo album Built on Glass (“Talk is Cheap,” “Gold”), Chet Faker has teamed up with UK DJ Marcus Marr for a short-but-sweet EP. An electronic fusion with Motown vocals, Work is an unexpected and much-welcomed change of pace. The synth hip-swayer “Birthday Card” is best-served with a side of newfound freedom - it’s one of those recently-heartbroken-seekinga-rebound jams - “I need a cause, so bad/ I need a reason to be in this world/ I’m a boy, I’m a man, I don’t know where I stand...Oh, I know it’s from being alone.” The single “The Trouble with Us” is a bit of a venture from Faker’s typical vocal stylings, more Bret Dennen and a lot of Jamiroquai on Marr’s part. Smooth and sexy, “Learning for Your Love” is for knitting baby booties, with lyrics “never thought I’d think of fate, but something’s making sense/ I’ve never been a man of faith, but you’ve got my intentions.” Finally, “Killing Jar” is a headnodder with an Eastern feel and layered guitar, dreamy but a little disappointing of an ending to an otherwise legit EP. Regardless, Chet Faker is one of the best things to happen to music in a grip. Golf clap. Daughter Not to Disappear 4AD

The British trio known as Daughter has released their second album, but don’t sink into a warm bath with razorblades quite yet. Less self-aggrandizing and more seasoned than before, it’s still gauzy and spacey but feels more mature than If You Leave. The designation of “folk” escapes me, however - ambient shoegaze for sure, but the Cat Power-like breathy vocals and amok instruments aren’t Americana. Call it what you will. This compilation is a vast improvement and stand-alone with nothing else considered.

I decided to review Blackstar prior to David Bowie’s passing. This is not a sympathy review. I am not a mark for everything Bowie did. In fact, there is a fair amount of material I do not care for. However, I’m enough of a fan to always give new material a fair shot. After listening through Blackstar enough to separate the material from the tragedy, here is what I can say for certain. Blackstar was just as spectacular during the 72 hours prior to Bowie’s death, as it is now. It stands on its own; the only difference being a clearer understanding of the album’s tone. Over the last few years, Bowie has experienced an enormous surge of creativity not seen in decades. But don’t expect Ziggy, or the Duke to make appearances on Blackstar. This is a mature, sophisticated crooner reminiscing at times, while also attempting to wrap his head around his own mortality. On the surface, it seems fairly dark. Oddly, it manages to be quite uplifting. As usual, Bowie rides that line of being just avant-garde enough to satisfy his diehard fan base, without being too off-putting to the casual listener. That, along with his unique mix of bellowing and biting vocals, could possibly sidetrack listeners from realizing what they’re actually hearing. Blackstar is a jazz record. Despite its heavy, sometimes morbid themes, a good portion of the album makes you want to get up, put on a nice suit, and celebrate. In a weird way, Blackstar is a lot of fun. Maybe that was the intent. The world will never see another David Bowie. He was a brilliant, fearless visionary that committed his life to his art. He left us with an immense body of work, and capped it off with a stellar finale. That certainly calls for celebration. J. Robert Lobeck

When the album begins, I can’t help but be reminded of bands that played at The Bronze in Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Shy, specifically. If Tonra is indeed a werewolf, I wouldn’t be surprised - her vocals are absolutely intoxicating. The lyrics to “New Ways” are ambiguous, but to me, it screams impending infidelity. “Numbers” is a fuzzy tribute to modern hook-up culture - “blackout nights and tight spaces?/ we’ll feel distant embraces/ scratching hands ‘round my waist, yeah/ I wish my mouth would still taste you.” “Doing the Right Thing” is probably the most powerful track, a desolate, floral portrait of womanhood with matching distortion. Pretty damn decent as a whole, but I can’t help but feel like there are more underground bands/ artists with the same flavor who deserve more accolades, like *cough, cough* Sea Oleena. - Whitney Patterson
