EDITOR A QUICK NOTE FROM THE

I

don't know about you, but I'm ready for a new year - a fresh start, a clean slate. 2016 certainly had its moments, though, and it was never dull. For instance, the country elected a reality TV star as its next president, something few people expected or predicted. As the non-committal saying goes, "It is what it is," and now we'll just sit back and see what happens when Trump takes over. Could be good, could be bad. And not surprisingly, many of you out there in the tri-state have some strong opinions about which way we're headed. Which is a blatant segue into the topic of this month's cover story on pg. 6. Love it or hate it, The Era Begins. Discuss. Ok, now to lighten the mood... January is normally a pretty quiet month event-wise, but 2017 is bringing it, baby (I've got a George Costanza thing going of late - just ignore it). Not only are the Harlem Globetrotters returning to the Ford Center for another night of basketball wizardry, but country superstar Miranda Lambert is making Evansville the first stop on her much-anticipated "Highway Vagabond Tour" on January 26. And for you classic/soft rock fans out there, America ("Horse with No Name") will hit the Victory stage on the same night. Downtown is where it's all happening in the new year, folks. But before you chuck 2016 out the window, check out our 3-page retrospective documenting all of the amazing events and activities that News4U chronicled over the last 12 months. The tri-state was busy, indeed. Happy New Year! - TE

miranda lambert "HIGHWAY VAGABOND TOUR"

FORD CENTER | JANUARY 26 | 7 P.M.

Pure platinum: Country music's leading lady talks new album, new live show and love of animals

N

early 15 years into an incredible career marked with countless hit singles and awards, Miranda Lambert is seemingly just getting started. Her latest album, The Weight of These Wings, has reset the deck with a shake-up in sound and vision that proves the 33-year-old Texas native is in it for the long haul. No worries, she's still the same Miranda - fun, fiery and fierce - but there's a real determination to evolve and experiment, as evidenced on the edgy lead single, "Vice," and particularly the stark video that plays out like a slow-mo dream. Lambert is no stranger to Evansville, of course. She absolutely blitzed the Ford Center on her 2015 tour and looks to pack the house again on January 26 along with special guests Old Dominion and Aubrie Sellers. We're thrilled that you have chosen Evansville as the opening date on your "Highway Vagabond Tour." How did we make it to the top of the list? I have very fond memories of Evansville, actually. It was also an early tour stop when I was on the road in 2015 and I remember feeling the fans were so great and so into the music. So it was an easy decision. The beginning of a tour can always be a little bit nerve-wracking, as we figure out all the logistics, production and set list, so Evansville is a very comfortable and welcoming place to start! Not only is The Weight of These Wings a double album, but the first single, "Vice," is a moody, gritty track that defies expectations. It's refreshing to see a star of your caliber challenging the norm. I hope that means you like what you are hearing! I believe I always did exactly what I felt in terms of what type of music, direction of sound and content I wanted to put out there. I truly always felt if I can’t be true to myself and make the kind of music I want to make, then I would rather not release any albums. I got lucky that my

record label came along for the ride, and what a ride it has been. Obviously, you have a lot of new material to pull from for this tour. So what can fans expect in terms of both the set list and stage show? The set is beautiful, yet simple and has some fun video content for certain songs. I am especially happy with the great lighting this time around. I am thrilled to be able to add new songs to my set list, I have been working on it and think it will have around seven songs from the new record, so I am hopeful the fans will embrace it. Each month, we devote a page of our magazine to shelter animals and adoption stories. So, it's exciting to have an animal lover like yourself coming to Evansville - someone who is making a real difference through the MuttNation foundation and annual Cause for Paws fundraiser. If there’s anything you would like to say to our readers about your love for animals, you have the floor… I am very happy to hear that, we have hundreds of those great stories of dogs finding a forever home. Pet adoption is my favorite subject matter. I get excited for every single dog that we find a home for. I recently partnered with Petmate, a company out of Arlington, TX to create the MuttNation Pet collection. My own dogs are so into the toys, it’s fun to see it all come together and spread the message of adoption through that avenue. We also do a “Little Red Wagon” promotion on the day of each show on tour, where we ask people to donate dog toys, food, etc. and fill the Little Red Wagon. The donations go to a local shelter! * Petmate will generously donate a $100 prize package for one lucky News4U reader. See News4U's Facebook for details. For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

JANUARY CONCERTS @ The VICTORY Legendary singer-songwriters and classic soft-rock duo lined up for two great nights of live music

Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt | January 17 | 7 p.m. The term "national treasure" most certainly applies to both Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt. Two of the most accomplished and diverse singer-songwriters in music today, their songs have made a huge impact on multiple generations and been covered by a number of celebrated artists. Separately, their accolades are just as remarkable. Lovett has claimed four Grammy awards and appeared in 13 feature films as well as on stage and on television. Over the span of 14 albums, the Texas-based musician has perfected the art of storytelling, fusing elements of country, swing, jazz, folk and gospel. Hiatt, an Indiana native, has 11 Grammy nominations to his credit and a 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award in songwriting from the American Music Association, among other highlights.

America | January 26 | 7:30 p.m. Known worldwide for their classic soft-rock hit, "Horse with No Name," America has been going strong for over four decades, having formed in England back in 1970. The band's influence, felt by legions of acoustic/folk performers throughout the years, is particularly a result of the trio's closeknit, flowing harmonies as evidenced on 1972's "Ventura Highway" and 1974's "Tin Man." Other early seminal tracks include "I Need You," "Sister Golden Hair" and "Muskrat Love." After a string of hits, America pared down to a duo in the late 70's, producing one more notable single with 1982's "You Can Do Magic." The group continues to tour and record new material - 2007's Here & Now featured collaborations with contemporary artists that grew up on America's music. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

AN EVENTFUL YEAR Believe it or not, there are still people complaining that there's nothing to do in the tri-state (you know who you are). Seriously? In the words of Phil Collins (he's on the comeback trail, btw), "There must be some misunderstanding / There must be some kind of mistake." Because that's simply not the case. But for anyone out there not convinced, let's take a month-by-month look back at the entertainment that was on offer in 2016 - all of which we documented in the pages of News4U. When you see it all mapped out, it's pretty darn impressive. So quit whining already.

1. JANUARY January came in like a lion with a huge show at the Ford Center. Country star Jason Aldean brought his "We Were There" tour to the tri-state, and the tri-state was there, all right - a packed house. Also at the Ford Center, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters celebrated their 90th (!) anniversary, thrilling fans of all ages. Comedian Brian Regan cracked everyone up at the Victory, Sherlock Holmes sleuthed at the Henderson Fine Arts Center and live folk music returned to the IBMM in Owensboro with the start of the 2016 Spring Concert Series. And talk about diversity... January also included the 40th Anniversary World Championship Ice Racing Series as well as "An Evening with C.S. Lewis." Enough said.

2. FEBRUARY February held its own on the big stage with an encore performance by Luke Bryan. A year after selling out the Ford Center, he came back bigger and better than ever on

the "Kill the Lights Tour." And speaking of bigger and better, the muscle-bound stars of the WWE invaded Evansville, throwing chairs and each other around the ring. Meanwhile, the Owensboro Convention Center was host to the 2016 Kentucky Sportsman's Show, three full days of archery, cooking, fishing and shooting demonstrations.

3. MARCH

March welcomed the 7th edition of EvilleCon, Evansville's marquis anime convention. Let's just say it was a full-on geek-end at the Old National Events Plaza. Elsewhere, Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles lit up the Ford Center on her "Playing with Fire Tour" and Christian music's Big Daddy Weave came to the Owensboro Convention Center in support of Beautiful Offerings, the band's biggest album to date. Plus, Indie rockers Metric made a stop in Louisville to promote the synth-heavy Pagans in Vegas.

4. APRIL April did not disappoint. Anticipation for the Alhambra Film Festival ran high as the premier event returned to Showplace Cinemas with a wonderful selection of indie films from all over the world. At the Victory, Black Jacket Symphony recreated Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in all its psychedelic glory and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra rekindled the magic of Elton John and Billy Joel with a little help from pianist Joe Boucher. Also at the Victory, NBC's The Sing Off season four champs Home Free showed why they are the a cappella kings. And of course, April means Guns & Hoses. The ninth boxing battle between the local police and fire departments was another epic showdown for charity at the Ford Center.

5. MAY

May is synonymous with the Rockin River City Ride, a two-day community event that benefits the Junior League of Evansville. The annual bike ride/run brought hundreds of people to the downtown area while Thursday Night Thunder drew area motorcycle enthusiasts to Franklin Street for weekly live

NEWS4U | SPECIAL FEATURE music and plenty of beer. At the Ford Center, Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown combined for a serious night of rock, and the inaugural Mesker Music Festival - featuring a great lineup of local bands - raised money for the renovation of Mesker Amphitheatre. Across the border, country legend John Michael Montgomery played all the hits at the Owensboro Convention Center and the Friday After Five summer concert series returned to the riverfront. Not to mention that the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra went out with a bang by performing a live orchestral accompaniment to The Godfather. Capiche?

6. JUNE June is all about festivals. ROMP Fest continued its amazing run in Owensboro with a who's who of bluegrass and folk musicians. In Henderson, the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival returned for the 26th year featuring headliner The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Here at home, ShrinersFest put on quite a show - both on the riverfront and in the air. Meanwhile, at opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum... Mystique Winery staged Cajun Fest in Lynville, a full day of arts and acoustic music, while KC's Time Out Lounge woke up the east side with two crazy nights of hair band heaven. The third annual Sudz on Green River drew thousands of head bangers to Washington Square Mall for a chance to see Poison frontman Bret Michaels. At the Victory, there was "Mandatory Fun" with Weird Al, while 90's rock faves Cracker jumpstarted the

Lincoln Amphitheatre 2016 Performance Series. Last but not least, It Takes A Village animal rescue presented their fourth annual Canine Carnival & Mardi Paws.

7. JULY July welcomed the inaugural River City Tattoo Expo at Tropicana Evansville, three days of good times, awesome music and great body art. Another first, the Burdette Blues Fest debuted at Burdette Park, featuring the best of the best regional blues acts. On the comedy tip, the "Queen of Mean," Lisa Lampanelli, killed it at the Victory - as did country music legend Ronnie Milsap. Elsewhere, post-grunge rockers FUEL played to a wild crowd at Backstage Bar & Grill. Ditto country star Colt Ford at the Kentucky Bike Rally where there was no shortage of adultsonly fun. But July also had plenty of family fun as the Vanderburgh County Fair returned for its 96th year - a whole week of rides, tractor pulls, good food, live music and more. And of course, SWIRCA & More's BrewFest once again brought thousands of craft beer and wine enthusiasts out to historic Bosse Field for an unforgettable evening.

8. AUGUST August was hot in more ways than one thanks to a visit from the hugely popular male revue Thunder From Down Under. It was ladies night at the Victory, all right. The venue also played host to Red Hot Chilli Pipers, the most famous bag pipe band on the planet, as well as folk music icon, David Crosby. At the Ford Center, country music legend

Dolly Parton performed in support of Pure & Simple, her new stripped-back album of love songs. That mostly acoustic show was followed by the full-on rock sound of John Fogerty. The former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman played songs from all phases of his nearly 50 year career. And speaking of long careers, southern rock gods the Marshall Tucker Band made a tour stop at the Lincoln Amphitheatre, another great 2016 Performance Series show. On Evansville's north side, Germania Maennerchor held its 55th annual Volksfest, a celebration of the city's German heritage, while out at Angel Mounds, the Warrick Humane Society staged its signature fundraiser, Dogs & Suds. Down south, motorcycle enthusiasts all gathered at the always raucous Hawg Valley Bike Rally in Graham, KY and thousands headed to Louisville for the Kentucky State Fair headlined by Reba, Jeff Dunham and country singer Chris Young.

9. SEPTEMBER September welcomed the inaugural Eville Shindig on Franklin Street, a traditional car, truck and motorcycle show modeled after Louisville's long-running Beatersville. Another first, the Heritage Days 5K was held in Princeton to support local parks. But September was also highlighted by a number of beloved annual charity events, including Animalpalooza Animal Benefit & Music Festival at Burdette Park and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Eastland Mall in support of breast cancer survivors. On the live music tip, there was plenty to choose from such as the Ferdinand Folk Festival featuring headliner Rich Robinson, the wildly popular "I Love the 90's Tour" starring Vanilla Ice and Salt-N-Pepa at the Ford Center

“IN NOVEMBER, THE HADI SHRINE CIRCUS DELIGHTED KIDS AND ADULTS ALIKE WITH ANOTHER DAZZLING PRODUCTION COMPLETE WITH TIGERS AND ELEPHANTS." and Main Street's Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Festival. And for those on the lookout for cheap beer and good music, the Newburgh American Legion Bierstube fit the bill. If all that wasn't enough, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra launched its 20162017 season with a performance by worldrenowned cellist, Zuill Bailey.

Musical, at the Victory just after comedian Gallagher went out in a blaze of melon on the 70-year-old's "Joke's On You" retirement tour. October also featured the return of Fiesta Evansville, as thousands gathered at Wesselman Park to celebrate the area's Hispanic culture. Meanwhile, across town at the Holiday Inn by the airport, the Tri-Con multi-fandom convention celebrated geek culture. Finally, the Evansville Thunderbolts, our city's new pro hockey team, played their opening home game at the Ford Center to a very excited crowd.

10. OCTOBER

11. NOVEMBER

October is typically the busiest month of the year for local events, and 2016 was no exception. Florida Georgia Line got the ball rolling with another sold-out show at the Ford Center on the country duo's "Dig Your Roots Tour." Not to be outdone, Alabama teamed up with the Charlie Daniels Band for another massive country music concert at the venue and southern rock favorites Blackberry Smoke returned to the Victory in support of their killer new album, Like An Arrow. Meanwhile, Christian music fans were treated to a very special evening when for KING & COUNTRY stopped at the Owensboro Convention Center. Local and regional bands were also highlighted as Lamasco hosted the Big Damn Music Festival, a celebration of the bar's commitment to area talent. And speaking of area talent, playwright Stanley C. Jackson premiered his latest production, STRIVE! The

November is always a bit of a breather after the craziness of October, but country superstar Carrie Underwood made sure that it wasn't dull. The former American Idol winner helped the Ford Center celebrate its fifth anniversary with a sold-out show as part of her hugely successful "Storyteller Tour." Also at the Ford Center, the Hadi Shrine Circus delighted kids and adults alike with another dazzling production complete with tigers and elephants. And speaking of animals, two great benefits took place this month: PC Pound Puppies Annual Fall Craft Show and It Takes A Village Helping Hounds Craft Fair. Both events raised money for these wonderful rescue shelters. Last but not least - and continuing with the crafts theme - the Owensboro Convention staged its annual Kraftucky Arts & Crafts Expo, a great opportunity to shop

for unique handmade creations in jewelry, clothing, pottery, décor and more.

12. DECEMBER December took 2016 out on a high note, for sure. The Brian Setzer Orchestra spread holiday cheer at the Old National Events Plaza on their "Christmas Rocks! Tour" and country star Kacey Musgraves did the same at the Victory, performing in support of her first seasonal album, A Very Kacey Christmas. Also at the Victory, comedian Ralphie May returned with a politically incorrect take on the holidays. His "White Trash Christmas Tour" was a much-needed break from all the serious stuff going on these days. Down south, Christian music fans rejoiced in NewSong's "Very Merry Christmas Tour" at the Owensboro Convention Center. The longrunning band was joined by Matthew West, Love & The Outcome and Reno. The OCC also hosted the third annual Owensboro Christmas Show which featured over 200 vendors from all over the region. Back home, local kids were on their best behavior at Swonder Ice Arena as Jolly Old St. Nick made a special appearance at the annual Skate with Santa event. Also encoring at the Ford Center, Christian music's biggest band, Casting Crowns, returns on "The Very Next Thing Tour." And of course, Guns & Hoses will be back for another epic boxing battle between the local fire and police departments! A little softer tannin wine, it's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and small amounts of Merlot and other grapes - a flavor bomb that goes well with winter fare and also with a plate of assorted cheeses and good bread. I Love this wine for its ability to be big in flavor and yet play well with foods.

Well, I guess that is enough for now. As the seasons change we will cover the other wine that will work then. Remember to think about next month. Walter the Wine Guy Seasonal wine drinking: Liquor Locker's resident expert has some good advice and tasty recommendations

Happy New Year! I hope your holiday season was bright!

Well, it’s the start of the New Year, and the bills for the season are starting to roll in. Don’t be discouraged, it’s the same as last year and you survived that, so as the song goes, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!" - and a glass of wine will assist in making the days better! This month let’s talk about seasonal wine drinking. GREAT PICKS FOR

A few wines that fall into this category are: t 'SBODJTDBO /BQB 7BMMFZ $BCFSOFU 4BVWJHOPO is a wonderful deep red wine that works well with a steak. The tannins are more on the silky side and really do cleanse the palate to prepare you for your next bite.

SEASONAL WINE DRINKING

When the weather changes you may notice that your preferred drink may change, too. Don’t fret, this is normal. In the depth of summer, you may want something that is more refreshing; in the chill of winter, you may be drinking bolder, bigger flavored wines. This is normal - due to many factors our tastes change to agree with our environmental situation. So, with that in mind, let’s talk about what and when you should be drinking to satisfy the seasons. We finally have gotten into the depths of winter! It took a little bit to get here, but now it seems to be here in full force! When the weather gets colder, in most cases people start to drink bolder wines. Sales of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel go up. I think this is due to the foods we eat in colder weather. The food has more fats, or richer flavors. Wimpy wines won’t stand up to these bigger flavors. If you eat stews, roasts, and creamy dishes, these foods can hold a lot of fats, so by drinking a big tannic red wine, your wine absorbs a lot of the fat and releases the fruit flavors that may be hidden by the dryness of the tannins. So, at this point, you may ask, “What are tannins?” Red wines get their tannins from both the thick grape skins and from the oak barrels the wine ages in. As the skins break down into the wine, they add color, flavor, and that dryness on your tongue. I have heard it described as “bitterness” or “drying of the mouth." This is a normal reaction to tannic wines. To compensate for this all you need to do is chew a piece of cheese, eat a piece of meat - anything that will add fat to your palate. The tannins will absorb the fat and loosen up. Also, you can carafe the wine - air will break down the tannins and allow you to drink without the reaction. This will also cut down the heartburn that may result from drinking the wine. I think this is why we also call these wines “Steak Wines."

"OESFX %ZTPO t The aptly named Backpacker Brown comes out of the can a dark brown color. The tan head that forms after pouring creates a beautiful glass of beer. The rich earthy flavors and overall hoppy taste really make you want to buy a six pack of this and go camping or even backpacking! Everything you want to know about this beer is right there in the name. If you want an earthy, hoppy beer give this one a try.

1BVM #SBHJO t A moderate off-white head forms on this deep amber golden ale. Sweet malt and cocoa scents fill the nose without overpowering it. More malt notes come to the forefront while drinking the beer, with cocoa flavors becoming more present in the finish. Brewed with eight malts, eight hops and clocking in at 8% alcohol by volume, this seasonal is worth a try while it’s available. Pair it with hash browns or brisket.

1BVM #SBHJO t A considerable off-white head forms on this beer when poured into a traditional beer stein. The dark brown ale boasts a rich malt sent as well as a noticeable citrus hop presence at the end of the nose. This profile seems to reverse in the first taste, with the hop notes coming through first, staying in the finish and followed by subdued malt flavors. Craft beer aficionados of all types might enjoy this one.

+BCF[ .BSUJOF[ t When I first received this beer I thought it was one of those comedic beers with the offbeat label. I was so wrong. This is a slightly hazy amber colored beer and I really enjoy it. I like the sweet hops and the flavor is very smooth. It says it's made with cocoa nibs but I don't taste any chocolate flavors. It has an 8% ABV - an all-around very nice beer.

+BCF[ .BSUJOF[ t It says it's a brown ale but it almost leans towards an IPA. The hops flavor is very much present in this beer. Don’t get me wrong, I like it, but a bunch of hops for a “brown beer is not what I was expecting -but it's pretty good anyway.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS SHORT'S BREWING THE DOUBLE MAGICIAN

ABV presents a noticeable booziness. Now, who’d think of a cold beer warming you up on a cold winter night? 1BVM #SBHJO t A decent off-white head forms on this mahoganycolored beer after pouring it into a traditional beer mug and evaporates quickly. Malt scents dominate the nose, with some roasted smells at the end. The malt flavors of raisin and toffee continue with the first sip of the beer, followed by some hop presence and roasted flavors in the long finish. Beer aficionados will want to try this seasonal offering while it’s available. Pair it with roasted or grilled meat.

%BOJFM ,OJHIU t This Double London-Style Red Ale pours up a rich dark brown with a modest light beige head and aromas of toasted malts, citrus hops and toffee. Its syrupy malty taste includes caramel, toffee, toasted biscuit, dark fruits and piney hops. It’s medium-bodied and its finish is balanced and dry. It’s a sipping beer that in spite of being 8.1%

+BCF[ .BSUJOF[ t This beer is a little dark with a slight red tint to it. I have never had a Double London-style Red Ale, but I really like this beer. It has a very smooth creamy flavor. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the ABV on the bottle. Maybe I am just hung up on that this month, but I feel this one has to be a little elevated.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS NEW HOLLAND CABIN FEVER

%BOJFM ,OJHIU t Cabin Fever pours up a rich dark brown color and sports a humble half finger head with light lacing to the finish. Its aromas are mostly roasted malts, maybe some brown sugar and chocolate. Its taste is toasted malts and notes of toffee and sweetness along with some hints of chocolate. It's smooth on the palate and offers a moderate “just right for this brew level of carbonation. Very nice, thumbs up! 1BVM #SBHJO t A good tan head rests on top of this very dark brown ale. Sweet scents of malt first control the nose, followed by roasted notes. The roasted notes seem to come through more in the first tasting of the beer and remain during the long finish, along with the sweetness of the malt. Pair it with roasted meats, dried fruits, gruyere cheese or smoked cheeses. +BCF[ .BSUJOF[ t This beer has a deep rich dark color and is better than your average brown ale. I like the sweetness it has along with its very smooth flavor. I like the printing on the back suggesting what to pair this beer with - plus, it's got an ABV of 6.5%.

GOOSE ISLAND WINTER ALE

%BOJFM ,OJHIU t A seasonal brown ale, this one pours up an attractive dark amber color and a compact lackluster head. Its aromas are toasted malts, faint vanilla, chocolate, spices and subtle hops. Tasting, there’s mostly those toasted malts with very mild bitterness at the finish. The mouthfeel is medium and drinkability is good. This is a nice ale for an evening around the wood burner. Unfortunately, with all of the great competition, it doesn't really stand out from the crowd. 1BVM #SBHJO t Roasted malt notes become present as soon as the cap comes off. A small tan head tops the black ale while pouring. It could easily be mistaken for a porter or stout. The sweet malt scent continues with a more deliberate whiff. Caramel and chocolate flavors first arrive while drinking, followed by roasted malt in the finish. This will be a great choice for cold winter months. Pair it with stew or chocolate desserts. +BCF[ .BSUJOF[ t This is a darker beer with nice roasted malt and a slight chocolaty aroma. I can taste some light coffee and a little roasted malts. This is a pretty solid beer and since it comes from Goose Island, I'm not surprised.

OMMEGANG LOVELY, DARK AND DEEP

%BOJFM ,OJHIU t This seasonal oatmeal stout pours up black as paint with a dense gorgeous tan two finger head. It’s aroma is charred dark malt and yeast with notes of banana and clove. It’s complex - I can’t put my finger on everything that’s going on in there. The body is medium and the taste is smooth and drinkable with coffee, chocolate and toasted malts. There’s a mysterious spiciness about its nicely bitter finish. Give it a try. If you like stouts, you may love this one. If you’ve never tried a stout, here’s a nice one to cut your teeth on. 1BVM #SBHJO t A thick tan head crowns this black stout and never totally disappears. The nose boasts a nice balance of roasted malt, sweetness from the oatmeal and a little bit of hops. The roasted malt, chocolate and coffee flavors remain on the tongue during the first sip and stay around during the long finish. Beer drinkers who enjoy oatmeal stouts will certainly want to try this seasonal during the cold winter months. +BCF[ .BSUJOF[ t This is another dark beer for the month that has a nice tan head. I really like oatmeal stouts and this one is pretty good with a bit of a smoky flavor. I thought it would have a bumped up ABV but this one is only 5.3%.

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS The Narrative Golden Silence Self-Released I like to think I’m usually pretty good at judging a band by its cover, or at least their general motif. So when I stumbled across The Narrative, I assumed it was going to be just another indie one guy/one girl group. I’m glad I was (mostly) wrong about it being derivative (See? Now it’s in writing that I’ve admitted a mistake), because Golden Silence is a refreshing take on a familiar formula. Something striking about this duo is their ability to use electronics and guitars more organically than most bands. Too many rely on overly glitchy/gritty keyboards/drum processors and scratchy guitars (See: The entire subgenre known as “electroclash”), but here they complement rather than compete. Even the guitar playing itself bucks genre stereotypes; right off the bat, the opening two tracks “Moving Out” and “Chasing a Feeling” feature guitars certainly punchier than your average indie band. But as strong as the instrumentation is, the duo’s earnest and emotive weaving vocal harmonies really deserve the spotlight, perhaps best showcased by “Already Changed” and “Oklahoma Air.” It’s a quality all too often lacking among their peers. Maybe it’s just the inner Jimmy Eat World/Mineral/Texas Is the Reason fan in me talking, but it’s enough for me to recommend this album to anyone who likes music with its heart on its sleeve. - Jonathan Gluff

The Men Devil Music Sacred Bones Records They say styles are cyclical, and given the recent influx of bands inspired by the ‘60s and ‘80s in particular, I’m inclined to agree. Upon first listen, it’s easy to think The Men are just another band in this trend. But there’s some surprisingly robust songwriting buried not far underneath the garage rock/proto-punk crust. Opening track “Dreamer”makes it clear these Brooklyn punks aren’t afraid to eschew the punk trope of sloppy guitars with solid yet never overly showy playing on the solos. And by avoiding the rut of traditional chords and progressions, it’s clear they have a keener sense of melody and structure than your average punk band. Speaking of punk tropes and not following them, “Ridin’ On” and “Violate” show the wah pedal isn’t just for noodling, tacky, extended solos. Similarly, “Patterns” and “Hit the Ground” feature the decidedly unpunk harmonica playing an integral role in the melody. The bubbling-under-the-surface intensity of “Lion’s Den” recalls Hüsker Dü at their most raucous. It may be sacrilegious to favorably compare a band to Bob Mould & co., but it wouldn’t be wrong. Devil Music switches gears with a beautifully fingerpicked acoustic number. “Gun” is the best collaboration Ryan Adams and Chris Isaak never had, and while album closer “Fire” drags on a tad too long, it certainly doesn’t stop me from highly recommending this album. - Jonathan Gluff

The Interrupters Say It Out Loud Hellcat/Epitaph With so many artist and band comebacks lately, I would like to spotlight a fun new group. The Interrupters are a break-out ska band marking the scene with an upbeat but sure direction and a rarity for the genre: a female vocalist. In their second release, Say It Out Loud, you won’t find a boring song. Nearly every track feels like a blasting party of bubbly horns and runaway bass. Moving to the ruckus of the album for a second go-around as I type, if I could insert a smile emoticon here, I would. So much fun, there’s no other word for it. Within their sunny sound, vocalist Aimee “Interrupter” Allan has much to say. With a steadfast snarl, she sings of often unsung women. In “Jenny Drinks” she admits the world may not be ready, but she’s never “been so frustrated with humanity,” yet supposedly she’s the crazy one. Joined by ska legend Tim “Timebomb” Armstrong (Rancid) in the song “Phantom City," a lively story is sung about a city consumed by corrupt law. Intense, but throughout, their music remains a brassy splash of color. - Laura Engram

A Tribe Called Quest We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service Epic Records Group A Tribe Called Quest makes a truly boss return, after 18 years of separation between MCs Q-Tip, Jarobi, and Phife Dawg. Featuring collaborations from several artists, their sixth studio album, We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service, is a jazzy and eloquent, vastly representative hip hop title. The release is remarkable for having an old school quality that not only maintains its significance in our world today, but actually feels welcome and necessary. Velvety vocal flow with smooth vivacious beats completely saturate the complex rhymes and attentive social commentary in each track. In songs like “Conrad Tokyo," Phife Dawg unleashes sobering remarks about the trends coming of the Trump Era. In “Ego," Q-Tip articulates stirring human truths. The jazz offering of “Dis Generation” is the perfect backdrop for its message of hope. There are so many deeply valid topics presented, especially in “We the People…” which grounds the work in unapologetic reality. Unfortunately, MC Phife died towards the end of production for this album. The remaining members memorialized him through the touching song “Lost Somebody” and the album ends reflectively. - Laura Engram Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • January 2017

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Sum 41 13 Voices Hopeless Records The return of Dave “Brownsound” Baksh didn’t save Sum 41 from Deryck Whibly. The lyricist that wants to be a composer continues to ruin this band. The one thing Whibly, who takes credit for every track on this album, amazingly has still not learned is the idea which every other band in the punk genre breathes: Don’t take yourself too seriously. I was really excited to hear of Baksh’s return, and was hoping for that old Sum 41 magic that was felt in All Killer, No Filler and Chuck. I was hoping to hear a simmering snarl of guitar technique, leashed but heavily pulling a poppy chord progression and fun, aggressive lyrics. In 13 Voices, you hear this only once in a while, and the best offerings are definitely the deeply meaningful “Goddamn I’m Dead Again” and the title track. Yet, as an album, the lyrics are forgettable clichés and the music relies mostly on cheap, dramatic dynamic changes, unlike the last time Baksh was in the band. Despite his return, the band still isn’t writing the songs, and 13 Voices is no killer, mostly filler. - Laura Engram

Metallica Hardwired... To Self Destruct Rhino/Blackened Recordings ADA Few bands have exposed the seething, ravenous beauty hidden inside a heavily distorted electric guitar like Metallica has, and Hardwired… To Self-Destruct lives up to that reputation. It growls gorgeously, single after impressive single. I wouldn’t say this is their best album. The band long ago eased up on their genre-shattering musical complexity in favor of songs that create a vicious, yet moving sound. Although once you pass through all the top charted singles of the album, the latter half does become much more technically impressive, as in tracks like “Am I Savage?” and “Spit Out the Bone." The singles of the album are, yes, loads of brutal excitement, but definitely outshine in popularity the imagery and prowess of other songs. While “Moth Into Flame” smacks of punk in both style and lyrics - like what I expected of the recent Sum 41 album and didn’t get - musical flair like “ManUNkind” is interesting, while also begging important questions. Overall, in style and message, I don’t see much growth. Instead, the album nods with surety to the striking talent that Metallica always had an ambitious history of. - Laura Engram

Childish Gambino Awaken, My Love! Glassnote I don’t know how I’ve managed to put off listening to Childish Gambino until now. I’ve been a big fan of Donald Glover’s for years; between his standup and his excellent portrayal of Troy Barnes on Community (a personal favorite show of mine), I’ve always enjoyed his work. So when Awaken, My Love! came up under “Recommended New Releases” on Google Play Music, I decided to finally give his music a chance, too. What surprised me most was that this album is much more James Brown than Danny Brown. I’d always heard Mr. Glover could rap, but apparently he can sing, too, and surprisingly well. There have been grumblings that his voice sounds too “processed” on this record, but clearly people are mistaking his heretofore unknown singing range - along with some varied and atypical rhythmic vocals - as Autotune or other studio magic. The controlled stuttering delivery of “California” sticks out as one of the most original approaches to a vocal in recent memory, while the powerful falsetto of “Terrified” is certainly not something one would expect from an artist who takes his stage name from an early internet Wu-Tang Clan rap name generator. I’m continually impressed by the talent Donald Glover displays. Now let’s hope this streak extends while he steps into Billy Dee Williams’ shoes as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo film… - Jonathan Gluff

The Alpha Incident Odyssey Self-Released Adding the qualifier “progressive” to any genre of music usually signifies a band that takes said genre and expands upon it, often with increasingly complex compositions. Unfortunately in recent years, it’s seemed to mean nothing more than “band that plays 8-string guitars tuned down to F.” Fortunately, Evansville’s own The Alpha Incident bring a style that actually is worthy of bearing the “progressive metal” label. Just like their self-proclaimed influence - fellow progressive metallers Between the Buried and Me - they excel at smoothly transitioning between seemingly disparate movements within the same song. Lead-off track “Monolith” showcases the band switching seamlessly from pummeling double-bass and blast beats to brooding, atmospheric passages replete with hauntingly clean vocals. That’s not to say there aren’t other influences. While the synth closing “Lunar Flight” is eerily reminiscent of the opening of “Selkies: The Endless Obsession” off BTBAM’s Alaska, “Discovery” ends with a somber acoustic figure that Radiohead would’ve been proud of. Singer Michael Morrow likes to switch things up with vocals that recall The Black Dahlia Murder, The Red Chord, and Tool. Being a concept album based upon Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, closing track “The Room” fittingly yet organically brings back the end of opener “Monolith” to bookend the EP. If you like metal that challenges the conventions of the genre, support these local thrashers and pick up Odyssey. - Jonathan Gluff

MOVIE R EVIEWS Kubo and the Two Strings (PG) Laika

When I first saw the cover choice for this issue of News4U, I had just thoroughly enjoyed this gorgeously imaginative movie, Kubo and the Two Strings. This film has a tender and moving, yet inquisitive embrace that I sincerely felt. And I figured, maybe sharing a few family films could balance out some of the heaviness in our world today. Kubo and the Two Strings begins darker than most children’s tales. Between light, colorful moments, horrors readily follow our main character, and Kubo himself admits “that really is the least of it. "The dreaded Moon King wants to hunt Kubo into a blind husk of a human being, without the capacity for love or empathy. The movie takes time developing this admittedly morbid motivation, so by the time it’s fully revealed we have already traveled a vibrantly large world, befriended memorable characters, and enjoyed every moment. The quest ultimately teaches Kubo to cherish his memories and his humanity. A children’s movie exploring these questions this passionately, yet this whimsically, is a real masterpiece. Kubo is definitely one of the most creative and meaningful films I’ve seen recently, and whether you have children or not, I suggest taking on its adventure. - Laura Engram

Pete's Dragon (PG) Walt Disney Pictures

www.showplacecinemas.com

If you think of the movie title Pete’s Dragon and remember catchy ditties with lyrics like “Passamaquaddy” and “Come back, by cracky, we'll share the happiest home in these hills” and “Groo, grugrugrugrugru, grooo—I love you too” don’t expect that this time around. If you remember lots of adorable conversations between an orphan boy and his invisible friend, this time it will be different. Don’t expect those things from the latest Disney remake. But whether you are seeing it with your children, or for nostalgia’s sake, do expect to leave happy, with your heart warmed, and that magical Walt Disney feeling that graces the classics. This incarnation of the lost and found classic takes a new approach. At first, I thought they mishandled Pete’s character, which seemed more like a version of Mowgli from The Jungle Book than Pete. However, as the story continues, it makes sense. Conversations carried mostly by the boy are often replaced by intensely heartfelt facial expressions and body language between Pete and Elliot. Instead of the story centering predominantly on Pete, it's an excitingly visual twofold tale of finding home. The acting is lovable, and the story captivatingly touching. - Laura Engram

WORDS

FROM

WHITNEY by Whitney Patterson

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

Pantsuit Nation has arrived in the Tri-State

What's on Your Mind? The internet lacks no abundance of wry chuckles about what kind of year 2016 was. I agree - it was strange to say the least. I'm not even going to mention the obvious - I feel like that's been done enough. Amidst the information overload, civil rights issues, and political turmoil, it feels like we've nearly lost our ability to communicate rationally and ya know, in person. When you share a following on social media yet can barely make eye contact in real life, something is amiss. "Oh, hey, there's so and so... oh. They looked right at me. Is it something I said on Facebook?!" Of course, I'm socially awkward anyway, and always assume everyone's mad at me, but I'm not the only one on this tip, am I right? So much is left to interpretation - a lack of emoji, punctuation, and "seen" messages that hang in the balance for days on end to no response. Dunno, I'm part of the generation that remembers what it was like before all of this, yet as an adult, I'm ensconced in it as well, both in my personal and professional life. Honestly, I get intensely sick of it, to the point where I randomly deactivate my accounts (minus Instagram, of course) for a few days just to get sucked back in, usually for work, because my job would be very difficult to do without it. Yeah, it really is a great tool for a lot of avenues business-wise, and for connecting with old friends, but for me personally, it has become somewhat of a bane, and an endless stream of frustration and annoyance. I don't really do New Year's resolutions, because I'm always a work in progress, no matter how sluggish or quick that progress may be. That being said, 2017's Facebook isn't going to see nearly as much of me, because that thing has become way too clingy and I need my personal space. Don't be a stranger, however. If we're connected on the keyboard, saying hello out and about won't be weird. Just don't be put off by my resting bitch face. That's just how I look. Signed, Whitney Patterson, someone desperately in need of a vacation

While the election has been over for more than a month, tensions remain high on both sides. This is evident based on posts, comments, and links seen via social media. Because of the polarization of candidates on both sides in this election, groups were formed, mostly online, supporting candidates from both sides. One of these groups is Pantsuit Nation. Pantsuit Nation (PSN), cleverly named after Hillary Clinton's trademark wardrobe, was set up to provide a forum for Clinton supporters to vent their frustrations at Trump and find a common bond supporting the would-be first female president. Even though the election is over and Clinton was defeated, this organization has arrived in the tri-state. Jamie Dill, who recently moved back to the area, is starting the PSN movement here in southwestern Indiana. "PSN founders are forming the movement into a non-profit status. This means PSN has taken a step back from engaging in political activities for or against candidates," she says. "The SW Indiana chapter is focusing on empowering rights for those who have been excluded and is fixated on what we can do in the communities to bring progress while we undergo the shift in power at the White House." Thus, even though PSN's candidate lost, they will remain steadfast in supporting people who felt left out and possibly belittled during this election cycle. WRITE STUFF

Q:

How can we stay on a new path in 2017?

with Jonathan Gluff

The new year always brings those promises we make to ourselves and others that we will somehow improve our lives and our living over the course of the next 365 days. “Resolutions” we call them. These are the grand, but illusive, dreams we have - that we will be better 8,765.82 hours from now than we are today.

Fandom-onium (Or Sell-ebrities)

And, as we all know, the resolutions soon go away. We revert to the comfortable practices we would disown and embrace the ways we would abandon.

I sometimes take for granted that I have some pretty cool and well-connected friends.

So, how do you stay on a new path? The evidence is clear: never walk alone. Study after study has proven the truth that there is strength in community. When we join with others in the same effort, our chance of success is greatly increased. I know of a woman who decided it was time for her to run. Frankly, most people in her age and in her condition wouldn’t dream of it. But she did. She started walking, then added a little running, and before long she was running her first 5K. But she didn’t run alone. She got a friend to run with her. The friend was company, understanding, and community. It became a shared experience. And she succeeded. You can become whatever you want to be. Find someone who shares your dream and believes in you and you will succeed! First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

The other day, I stumbled across a discussion on one of my friend’s Facebook posts that included a guy who happened to be the singer of one of my favorite bands. After seeing what he said weighing in on the subject, I decided I’d see if I could get a laugh out of him by responding with a lyric from an album they put out 10+ years ago as kind of an inside joke. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about possibly looking like a complete idiot before I finally clicked “Send,” but a short bit later he “Liked” my comment and tagged me in a response with a winking emoji. (I’d also be lying if I said I wasn’t really pumped about the fact that I made one of my favorite singers laugh.) I resisted my instinct to ask questions about my favorite songs and just generally fanboying out, avoiding the risk of others catching on to who he was. So I took my win and moved on. I hate our culture’s obsession with celebrity. Sure, I got a little excited that I just got to interact with a man whose musical contributions I greatly admire, but I recognize he’s a regular person and deserves privacy, too. And furthermore, placing such admiration on one person or group just for being famous truly harms our society as a whole. I absolutely loathe it when a brand/company uses a celebrity in their advertisements. I interpret it as nothing more than saying, “We think you’re shallow enough to buy our product/service just because of who we’re using to sell it to you.” I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t appreciate the condescending assumption that I’ll spend my hard-earned money on a Lincoln just because Matthew McConaughey told me he drove them before he was paid to drive them. I’m not pretending I have a solution to make companies stop trying to make us buy Product X from Brand Y because Celebrity Z endorses it. And by all means, if Brand Y’s version of Product X is legitimately the best one, use it regardless of Celebrity Z’s endorsement. But if we can all stop feeling that celebrities are somehow magically different than/superior to us, that certainly would be a great start.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

DESTINY & ROOSEVELT 23-year-old Indianapolis resident Destiny Brooks was so determined to find a new best friend that no animal shelter was too far away. After losing her beloved family dog back in July, she took some time to grieve and then started looking at the websites of places all over Indiana - in Indianapolis, of course, Ft. Wayne, Muncie and then eventually Evansville. At the VHS, she came across a yearold Poodle/Schnauzer (or possibly Shih Tzu) mix named Roosevelt. "I saw his picture and was looking at him for about two weeks - kept calling to make sure he was still there, bugging the workers," Brooks laughs. Desperate to get her application accepted and to make the trip down to claim Roosevelt, she lucked out when the VHS held a rare Sunday event which meant that staff would be on-site and available to process the adoption rather than having to wait until the work week. Brooks immediately hopped in her car and headed for the shelter. "When I got there, he was already outside being a star, and I was like, 'Yup, that's my dog!' I don't want to share him - I think we're just going to be roommates and best friends."

t's a new year, and it's time to up your fashion game! This winter, the trick is to layer your styles to stay warm in the cold tri-state weather with the option to peel away the layers while indoors. The fun thing about winter 2017 is that the newest trend combines fun and playful looks from the 90’s with a very individualistic and eclectic look. Get ready to ring in the new year with a new you! Working our way from the top through a fun January look, let’s start with a fun knit hat to keep your head warm! You can find variations of this cozy cap almost anywhere, so choose one that fits your personal style. One way to keep it unique is to choose a hand-knit hat that benefits a cause. Find a variety of colors and styles for men and women at Amerie Boutique in Newburgh. Next, you will need warm outerwear to pull your entire style together. Try a vintage style bomber jacket in an earthy color like army green (shown). You can find variations of this jacket to make it your own unique look. These jackets are great to wear into spring, and can be easily layered with almost any colors and patterns. Try searching local boutiques for yours; Flutter Boutique in historic Newburgh carries this style (pictured) and more trendy outer wear.

You may consider wearing a sweater under your outerwear on a particularly cold day, but another fun way to layer is to wear a button style shirt or flannel with a graphic tee or tank layered under that. Single Thread Boutique carries a variety of plaid button up style tops that would look great with your hat and bomber jacket. Try a motivational graphic tee under your plaid like this henna hand flowy tee from Amerie (shown) to add a touch of interest. Choose any style of jeans to pull your look together. Try skinny jeans with boots and maybe even add boot socks or leg warmers to your look for contrast. House of Bluez is known for their wide variety of bottoms, and check out Flutter for super trendy boots! Throw on some layered bracelets and necklaces to finish your look, and remember to always try to shop local boutiques for the newest style trends! Amerie Positive-Purpose Boutique is located at 10 W. Jennings St. in Newburgh.

Their signature song "A Horse With No Name” made America a global household name and paved the way for an impressive string of hits like "I Need You," "Ventura Highway," "Don't Cross The River," "Tin Man," "Lonely People," and "Sister Golden Hair" that were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. The combination of founding members Gerry Beckley’s melodic pop rock and Dewey Bunnell’s use of folk-jazz elements, slinky Latinleaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with former member Dan Peek's more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics. "THE SACRIFICE" BY JOHN THURGOOD

I

make it a point to look her in the eyes. I owe her that much. She looks young, no older than sixteen. The pool of virgins gets younger and younger each year. I’m not sure if this is on the priest’s orders, but I wouldn’t be surprised. He was only promoted three summers ago, and it makes sense that he would try to distinguish himself. I guess he thinks the virgins are more potent at this younger age. Who’s to say? One thing I do know is that if it doesn’t start raining soon, we’re all going to starve to death. The virgin gives me a hollow stare. She has eyes like the burning blue at the center of a pyre, and even from where I’m standing as a flagbearer, I can see that she’s holding back tears. I hope she is potent. It would be a shame for her to go through all this for nothing.

The Joys of New Mommahood POST GRAD PERSPECTIVE FROM MARISA PATWA

N

ov. 30, 2016 will forever be the most cherished day of my life. It was the day I became a mother. It was the day my life changed from being centered around my wants and needs to being centered around my daughter's. It was also the start of a new journey filled with the cutest, tiny pink human clothing you could imagine, losing pacifiers at a rate I can only liken to bobby pins and dealing with more bodily fluids than I ever thought imaginable. Before I could even dampen the washcloth for her first bath at home, she began to pee in the tub - the lavish baby whirlpool spa bath I insisted was on our baby registry over a simpler $20 tub. Then there was the carseatpoopsplosion incident. I won’t go into too many details but let’s just say that it involved my baby’s bottom, a very soiled diaper and an expensive car seat that took over an hour to clean up. But I’m not complaining. I’m reveling. I’m rejoicing. Because every second that I get to care for this perfect, beautiful human I’ve created is worth it.

The priest turns to face the horde of villagers, and the virgin reluctantly does the same. I can see her slender shoulders through her sheer, white raiment and hood. She is slouching a little, and her neck tightens when the priest raises his abarist and sends the crowd into a frenzy. They’re going crazy with cheers for renewal. Two guards lead the virgin to the sacred stone and tie her wrists and ankles. She is given a bandana soaked in jimson weed. A similar mixture is used by the elders to breach the path to the gods, but compared to her bandana, the elders may as well be sipping ginger wine.

Even when I’m exhausted at 3 a.m. in the morning, rocking her, bouncing her on my knee, singing to her and rubbing her back. Even when she goes through too many diapers in a day to count and fights me every step of the way while I’m changing her. Because every time I look into her dark brown little eyes, rub the smooth heels of her feet and run my fingers tenderly through her thick black hair, I am reminded that she isn’t just my responsibility, she is my gift.

The priest turns to the crowd with a flourish, and the crowd wails. He motions to the drummers, and they pick up an unworldly pulse. He rattles his abarist and side steps in front of the virgin, crouching low and sneering. The white chalk and ash on his face start to run with sweat, and he begins a low rolling chant that sounds incredibly similar to a song I often sing to my daughter before bedtime. The drums pulse and the priest chants. A blade glints in the sun. The horde pails, and I pray to the gods that my daughter is at home safe in her bed.

So for any new mothers out there struggling with brutal nighttime feedings, impossible laundry loads and questionable fluids everywhere, don’t despair. You are not alone. Everyone’s experience is different and that is ok. You are NOT a superhuman - you are a mother. And that is the hardest job on the planet. But it is also the greatest new joy of my life.

But even though I love my daughter, in my darkest sleep deprived states, a tiny flicker of me resents her. Does that make me a bad mother? No. It makes me a human. My own mom had to remind me of that.

NEWS4U | COMEDY

Just for laughs: Evansville native collaborates on bizarre sketch comedy concept album via Kickstarter

A

former die-hard collector of News4U magazines (the bulk of which may or may not be currently stored in a "foreboding storage space" by his parents), Jared Jeffries left Evansville some years ago to pursue his interest in improv and sketch comedy. He first landed in Chicago for at least one obvious reason - it's home to Second City, the long-running comedy club/ theatre/school of improv that has spawned such stars as Key & Peele, Steve Carell and Tina Fey. In short, the Windy City is the place to be if you're a budding comedic type from the Midwest. While there, Jeffries not only got involved in the comedy community, he was singled out for his work, including an award for Inkling Chicago's "Best New Improv Group" (Chicago Magazine) and

praise for his collaboration on Exquisite Corpse, an official selection of the 2013 New York Television Festival. The pilot episode of this surrealist production presented "an absurd, interconnected world with fat camps, vengeful janitors, a quest for the perfect lover, murderous eagles, dream dance fantasias, deity murder and much more." After a string of successes in Chicago, Jeffries moved on to Brooklyn, NY where he currently resides and continues to follow his comedic dreams. His latest endeavor, A Gift You Didn't Ask for from Friends You Never Had, is an ambitious, one-of-a-kind comedy album created with fellow Exquisite Corpse-er Peyton Brown - a project four years in the making. The two improv vets share a similar style and a determination to think outside the box. "Once we started working together, I realized we were really good at riffing off of each other, and we both wanted to do something really unorthodox," Jeffries says. "It [the album] was meant to be a sketch show, and that's how the majority of side one was written. But we realized the show would need a huge cast and props and money." Clearly, they needed a plan B. That's when Jeffries came across a historic piece of vinyl by the Firesign Theatre called How Can You Be In Two Places At Once When You're Not Anywhere At All? It may have only set him back a buck at the time, but the

album's influence was immediate and invaluable. "It blew my mind," Jeffries says. "I showed it to Peyton and we both kind of looked at each other like, '[Our project's] got to be a record.'" Once the guys had agreed on the format, the next step was to create the flip side of the vinyl something that would serve as a deserving sequel to side A. "We re-wrote the material many times, tossing out whole concepts and starting over again," Jeffries explains. "Then the editing and mixing took months because there was so much to sift through - hours upon hours of line readings and dozens of tracks of sound effects." In fact, the sound design proved to be as complex as a movie in some places. But despite all the hurdles, the two award-winning comedians finally completed this off-the-wall labor of love - described as "like Sgt. Pepper's, but slightly funnier" - and are now offering the album on Kickstarter in return for a $20 donation. Most importantly, they humbly ask for your undivided attention in this multi-tasking digital age. "We want you to actually sit down and listen to this record. It was only designed to really work that way." To order, visit kickstarter.com (search Peyton Brown or Jared Jeffries).

THE BLUES WITH BRAGIN January's Featured Release: Resurrection By: Gaetano Letizia & The Underworld Blues Rock Band

STOLEN REMAINS Streamlined metal band returns with diverse but undeniably heavy new EP

I

t's been exactly two years since Evansville's Stolen Remains released new material, but the guys have kept busy in the interim, playing shows both in town and at metal-friendly venues in Kentucky and Tennessee. They've also dealt with some lineup changes, having slimmed down to a lean quartet featuring Brandon Oost (vocals), Mike VanBibber (guitar), Carlos Ross (bass) and Drew Gray (drums). Thankfully, the shake-up hasn't dimmed the fury. Not judging by Forevermore, the new 6-song EP which was recorded through Chasing Dreams Productions in Washington, IN. The fire of the band's previous studio work burns bright, clearly evident on the relentless opening track, "Blood Runs Dry," but there's also an obvious attempt to branch out musically, to explore different directions. "Our main goal for this effort was to create a new diversity within our sound," Oost explains. "We wanted every song to sound different from one another and stand out from the other tracks. I feel that we accomplished that goal." This conscious effort to evolve is most noticeable on "Diablo Vecina" which finds Oost actually singing the verses rather than howling with unchecked vitriol. Here, as with other gems like "Self Incinerate" and the title track, there's a serious 90's rock vibe, recalling elements of Saliva and Stone Temple Pilots, even Living Color (technically late 80's). What makes the EP work so well, however, is the band's ability to absorb these more melodic influences but maintain an undeniably heavy edge - easily achieved by VanBibber's unstoppable Zakk Wylde-ian guitar assault coupled with the punishing rhythm section of Ross and Gray. But make no mistake, Oost holds it all together with his energy drinkfueled screams that drive the pounding "Hollow Point" and "United We Fall." Kick ass.

Extraordinary guitarist returns with solid new release through Blind Raccoon Records

R

esurrection begins with the title track, a short but powerful instrumental that sets the tone for the rest of the album with a classic blues beat and Letizia’s stellar guitar skills.

The tracks “Old Guitar Player," “Hot & Cold Woman," “Standing by the Door” and “Nothin to Me” provide a funkier feel with a serious groove; the former two also feature a nice horn section that's bright and punchy and both songs showcase the fine bass playing abilities of Larry Keller. “Purgatory” is a rocking tune that keeps an up-tempo beat. “Mr. Bad Luck," the longest song on the album, does a great job of taking turns showcasing Letizia’s guitar, Keller’s bass and the horn section. “Talk to Myself” returns the focus to the bass guitar and horn section, but adds a chill and psychedelic vibe from the guitar solo in the middle of the song as well as a second guitar track playing alongside a saxophone near the end of the song. The album ends with “Ascension," an enjoyable and fitting close for a solid album that effortlessly blends musical styles throughout. Anyone with an interest in jazz or blues will want to give Resurrection a listen. - Paul Bragin, WUEV Blues Producer For more info on Gaetano Letizia, visit gaetanoletizia.com, underworldblues.com or blindraccoon.com

Forevermore will be available for digital download on iTunes, Spotify, CD Baby, etc. early this year. Physical copies will soon be available at shows. Follow Stolen Remains: stolenremains.com, facebook.com/ stolenremains13, reverbnation.com/stolenremains

STEVE TYNER

Community service: Jenny's Bad Hair Day frontman on a mission to make tri-state bands sound good

so I'm trying to get good fast and be taken seriously," he says.

about it," he explains. Black Cat Recording was born ( he has a cat - and it's black).

Never mind the late start, the former Berklee College of Music student is making progress, all right, devouring every online tutorial, reading extensively, and most importantly, conferring with professionals, such as Tool producer Sylvia Massy. "She's the coolest," Tyner gushes. "I can talk to big time engineers like her on [Facebook] Messenger and they actually give me advice." But while he's taking a crash course in recording, Tyner is hardly new to the music industry, having played in numerous bands of the 90's alt-rock variety while living in Boston and Nashville. "I went on a bunch of tours and wrote some songs for TV shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Kyle XY," he says, noting that royalty checks still show up in the mail periodically. But big cities can drain the pocketbook not to mention the soul. So Tyner relocated to Evansville in 2014, admittedly burned out on music - and tapped out creatively. Ironically, the reprieve from writing and performing spurred him into action. "It was perfect, because I had always been into audio engineering and now I had the chance to explore it and get serious Local Band Callosum Recording at Black Cat

Of course, as just about any music fan in the tri-state knows, Tyner didn't stay away from the stage for long. While delving into his new passion, he found time to form Jenny's Bad Hair Day, and the success of the band has helped to fund Black Cat - to build up the studio in the renovated home he bought upon his return. Wisely, Tyner padded the living room walls with extra insulation for sound-proofing and then converted a spare bedroom into a control room. "The sound I'm getting is so much more than I expected," he says. "I'm doing my recording as a hobbyist, but the techniques I'm employing are world-class." Over the last year or so, he's worked with several artists - mostly acoustic; however, he tracked his first full-on live band, Callosum, last month. The excellent results of this collaboration - as heard on the British rock-influenced "Lost at Sea" - have only strengthened Tyner's resolve to be an asset to the tri-state music community. "I want to help these bands - maybe produce them," he says. "It's not just recording for me, it's helping people with a vision. I want them to be proud when they hand someone their music - I want them to be able to say THIS IS MY BAND."

his is a great time to be in music production," says 32-year-old musician and Black Cat Recording owner Steve Tyner, clearly energized by the subject at hand. The brainchild behind the very popular local cover band Jenny's Bad Hair Day is referring to the availability of "great gear for pretty cheap" - a leveling of the audio engineering playing field. Gone are the days of relying on hyper-expensive professional studios to get a good sound; now it's possible to create high quality mixes right in the comfort of your living room, and that's what's got Tyner so jazzed. He only wishes he had started down this path a bit earlier. "At my age, most people have already been in this game for 10 years,

JESSE DANIELS:

PHOTOGRAPHER

Camera ready: Early near-death experience spurs need to preserve memories, leads to photo career

I

t's a miracle that Jesse Daniels became a photographer. To be more accurate, it's a miracle that he lived to become one.

Truth be told, the 35-year-old Evansville resident is lucky that he made it past the age of three considering the harrowing 24 hours that his family and nearly 1500 volunteers spent looking for him in the woods of Nashville, TN on a freezing cold October day and night back in 1984. Daniels' dad was trying to make it in the music business at the time - thus, the Music City connection while mom held down the fort. Everything was copacetic. And then all hell broke loose. Well, their beloved dog, Willie, got loose and headed for the trees, chasing after another dog at top speed. Little Jesse instinctively ran after him, leaving his afternoon cartoons playing on the television. Unfortunately, mom was up to her neck in laundry at that very moment and didn't notice anything was amiss - until it was too late. By then, both Jesse and Willie were lost deep in the woods and soon the hunt for them went national with the story running on major networks; helicopters were employed, the whole city seemingly on the lookout. Still, time passed with no word. Meanwhile, police tried to find a piece of clothing

or bed sheets with little Jesse's scent, but everything had literally just been cleaned. Then just as hope was fading, a happy ending. The two best friends were located at an area landfill, Willie covering up little Jesse to keep him warm. "Some of the best photos of me, mom and dad were from the newspapers then, so maybe that's what got me started down the path of photography - the idea of preserving memories," Daniels says, reflecting on his near-death experience. But even though the seed was planted early on, it took a bit of nudging to make the leap into such a crowded, competitive field later in life.Yes, he had the talent and the education

following summer I shot about 12 weddings." Of course, Daniels never intended to be a wedding photographer. He's a natural behind the camera, and has branched out into other areas; however, he's also pragmatic and weddings pay the bills in the tri-state market. Especially when you're really good at what you do. So good, in fact, that Daniels eventually had to bring his wife on board to help run the business - which officially became Jesse & Gena Photography in 2008. "I gave her a camera and said, 'Be my second shooter' - and now she's better than me, she's got the eye," he says. "Working with Gena is pretty awesome - we're our own bosses and get to plan the way we spend our time."

"WORKING WITH GENA IS PRETTY AWESOME - WE'RE OUR OWN BOSSES" in the form of numerous art classes at UE. But it wasn't until after Daniels graduated and a senior at the university suggested, 'Why don't you shoot my wedding?' that something clicked - like the lens of a camera. Well, things didn't go quite that smoothly. "I think I threw up before that first wedding shoot," Daniels laughs. "Being a guy, I didn't even know what the parts of the ceremony were. But I took to it really quick. The

One way the couple likes to spend their (limited) free time these days is walking around downtown Evansville with their new baby, soaking up the ambiance of the city. "We moved into a loft a couple of years ago, and that was huge for our creative souls - sometimes it's like a movie set on the downtown streets," Daniels says, a little wistful that he didn't live near the riverfront earlier in life. But everything is once again copacetic. Now if only he could get a weekend or a holiday off on occasion... For more info, visit jesseandgena.com.

F EBRUA RY

15 new songs - all brand new music. It's all types of different material that we believe in and we love - from five-piece bluegrass all the way up to a full production. We're hoping to get it released in the first quarter of next year. "Steel Drivin' Man" off of 2013's Brothers of the Highway has to be one of the fastest bluegrass songs ever recorded. I think it's 186 bpm - that's cookin' it. I think we may get close to that on this new record. We've got one called "Give Me All the Love You've Got" and it's similar in speed and everyone takes a ride - there's even a bass solo in it. We actually had to go through three mandolin players to find someone who could keep up with the speed of the track - it's smokin'. Recording that track wore us out (laughs). But Jamie always says that we need something lightning fast for the first track on a record to set the tone. To date, you've done three album exclusives with Cracker Barrel. How did that partnership begin? Well, Jamie had the idea to do a tribute to the Statler Brothers who were his heroes growing up - now they're our friends. Two of the songs that we did in the early days of Dailey & Vincent were "Name on the Wall" and "Elizabeth" and people just couldn't get enough of them. So Jamie told our manager that we needed to do a tribute record to the Statler Brothers. But we were told that it was too early in our career and tribute records don't work. Everybody said no. Well, my sister had us at the Ryman that year. She originally had us down for a 45 minute show but knocked us down to 15. We knew we'd been screwed over by her, so we thought, 'Ok, we've got 15 minutes to go out there and do all we can do.' And we knew Cracker Barrel was in the audience. So we came up with a blistering show and got four or five standing ovations. We walked off the stage and the Cracker Barrel people were backstage and said, 'We love what you do - how can we be in business together?' Jamie walked right past our manager and said to them, 'I want to do a Statler Brothers tribute record. Would you be interested?' And they said, 'yes'. That did it. At the IBMM show, there's going to be a Dailey & Vincent exhibit featuring bits and pieces of your lives and career to date. Will it be overwhelming to see how far the two of you have come? We've put all of our accolades, all of our childhood - our whole lives are in that museum up there. So, it's going to be overwhelming to walk in there and see the display that they have created for us. You know, my father has been gone two years, and that's where our whole family got our love of music from. I just wish that he was here to enjoy this moment. But my mom is flying down, and I can't wait to grab her by the hand with my wife on the other side and walk in there and show them. It's going to be very special. DAILEY & VINCENT INTERNATIONAL BLUEGRASS MUSIC MUSEUM | JANUARY 13

Grammy-nominated bluegrass & country duo celebrating 10 year anniversary with special IBMM show and exhibit

J

amie Dailey and Darren Vincent had already experienced great success in the music industry before teaming up in 2007 - Dailey as lead vocalist for the traditional bluegrass group Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Vincent as a musician with Ricky Skaggs' legendary band Kentucky Thunder - but the combination of their talents sparked a whole new path that has taken them to amazing places. One of those destinations is PBS where the duo's TV special, Dailey & Vincent ALIVE - In Concert, recently aired for the 500th time. In addition, the CD version debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts and remained at the top spot for over 15 weeks.

Lately, these two masters of old school harmony have been hosting their own show on RFD-TV featuring such celebrity guests as Vince Gill,

The Oak Ridge Boys, Tanya Tucker and many others. And soon they'll play the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman for the 100th time - right where it all began for Daily & Vincent a decade ago. With a new album on the horizon and a 10year anniversary show and exhibit planned at the IBMM on January 13, the guys are gearing up for another big tour and continuing their efforts to save the classic bluegrass and country sound currently under siege on the charts. Darrin Vincent kindly spoke with News4U about the duo's past, present and future. You've won seemingly every award over the last 10 years - apart from a Grammy. What's left to achieve at this point? Well, obviously, the Grammy is a huge priority. I've got five from my time working with Ricky [Skaggs], but getting one for writing and producing our own thing would be great. It would be an honor. But we also want to do more television - to broaden the scope of our TV show. And we're really looking for partnerships and sponsors to help us to grow in that area. TV

is a big avenue for our brand - for the Dailey & Vincent brand. It's important to save the music that is dying. A lot of fans tell us that. No offense to Luke Bryan and the new country sound, but they say they can't tell the difference between one singer and another. And the music has no substance to it. They see us and our genre doing the old country, the whole gamut that we do - as keeping the old sound alive and they love it. Speaking of your TV show, what celebrity guests would you like to have on in the coming year? For me, it would be Ricky [Skaggs]. He turned me down when I first asked - said we needed to get some time under our belts. Which was smart - I mean, we were learning. But I want him, and I like Travis Tritt and the Bellamy Brothers. And there are some more bluegrass artists that we'd like to pull in. Having Dan [Tyminski] on was really cool. I don't think Alison [Krauss] would do it, but if we could ever get her to come on it would be awesome. And we'd also like to bring some new people in - some younger bands. One new band that we've really been impressed with is called The Band of Kelleys. They're young kids from northern Georgia or thereabouts - and I'm telling you that the 10-year-old can outplay me on bass. He's unbelievable. So, I'd like to have more people like that on. What's the status of the new album? Do you have a release date in mind? We're currently negotiating a record deal. Jamie and I went into the studio and produced

Grill

NACHOS

821 S. GREEN RIVER RD. | EVANSVILLE, IN

Y

et another culinary adventure for owner Jose Mosqueda, Nachos Grill occupies the former La Cabana location, serving Evansville's southeast side traditional Mexican dishes, American food with a Mexican flare and hearty hospitality. The extensive menu itself greets patrons with "Bienvenidos amigos," which translates to "Welcome, friends" - a sure sign of a family-owned and operated establishment that strives to provide the total experience, not just delicious cuisine. Expect all of the above, because Mosqueda and his crew have it down to a science. In the familial Mexican way, I was served a plethora of colorful, flavorful platters crafted with great care and pride. Things started off right with Lopez Dip - warm, seasoned ground beef and fresh pico de gallo under melted cheese. Paired with crunchy corn tortilla chips, it is most definitely a shareable appetizer, and a great way to begin the fiesta. Next, I sampled two new menu items - Guarache and the Evansville Special. The former is a chewy, house-made

24 |

flour tortilla topped with a choice of meat (I had steak), creamy, crumbled queso fresco, chopped tomatoes, fragrant cilantro, shredded cheddar, and chopped tomatoes. A little messy and definitely tasty, it is highly recommended. For the "meat and potato" lovers, the Evansville

Special is perfect - outside skirt steak cut inhouse, potato slices, rice and beans, served with a side of sliced tomatoes and fresh avocado. As a lighter option, I was also offered Shrimp Cocktail

with crisp, juicy shrimp in a special tomato sauce, full of avocado chunks, diced onions, and cilantro served with lime in a fishbowl - you'll need a fork and a spoon for this one. Last but not least, my sweet tooth got the best of me, so I tried a concoction of fried tortillas coated in cinnamon and sugar, topped with vanilla ice cream, a cherry, and drizzled in chocolate sauce. Worth it. Next trip - Queso Fundido and Mexican Tacos. Nachos Grill also serves beer, wine, Mexican sodas, offers a kids' menu, has ample additional parking in the rear, and is connected to La Preferida, a tienda with ethnic items and more. Look forward to delivery and catering options as well. Whether it's for a date, family dinner, a business lunch, birthday party, or anything in between, Nachos Grill has it all! - Whitney Patterson Hours: Sun-Thurs 11 a.m.-9 p.m./ Fri-Sat 11 a.m.-10 p.m. For more info, visit nachosgrillevansville.com.

owntown Evansville's latest restaurant venture, Bru Burger Bar, is one of a few new additions to inhabit renovated historical locations, a concept familiar to Cunningham Restaurant Group based out of Indianapolis. The two-story eatery occupies the former Greyhound Station on the corner of Sycamore and 3rd Street which has been defunct since 2007. Although the upscale touches and streamlined decor match the quality of fare Bru Burger provides, they have preserved much of the original integrity of the building. One of the upstairs dining areas maintains original tile flooring, the railing remains (although reinforced for current code standards), and stained glass can be found throughout the restaurant. Initially designed in 1939 by William Strudwick Arrasmith, the station now hosts one of

22 |

several Bru Burger Bar locations, providing a menu of scratch-kitchen items crafted from as many locally-sourced ingredients as possible. Executive Chef Gil Quesada is in charge of the kitchen in Evansville, chosen for exercising "hospitality DNA" and to foster the mission of all Bru Burger locations, which is to "reflect the fun and excitement of the urban dweller." Another agenda for the business is to partner with the community to aid in fundraising for local nonprofits and charities while providing economic stimulation, and of course, delicious twists on a 100 year-old favorite - the burger. Now, about those burgers... with 20 plus sandwich options, there's something for any appetite. Watch out for the Stilton Bleu - it's addicting! Burgers are made from their signature grind of sirloin, chuck, and brisket, but can be substituted for a turkey or veggie

patty, or all-natural chicken breast raised by Miller's Amish Farm. Vegans and vegetarians are not left out of the equation - they also offer a quinoa burger, grilled portobello, and fresh salads. Many items can be made glutenfree upon request, and pescatarians can enjoy Mahi Mahi, cod, Ahi tuna, and shrimp. Throw in a hefty list of delectable appetizers, scratch desserts, kids' menu, a full service bar boasting signature cocktails and carefully selected craft beer, and warm-weather patio seating with live music, and there's no question that Bru Burger Bar is the perfect addition to the bustling vibe of downtown. Stop in, try a Blackberry Sour, and let your taste buds make the decision. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Mon-Thurs 11 a.m.-10 p.m./ Fri-Sat 11 a.m.-11 p.m./ Sun 11 a.m.-9 p.m. For more info, visit crgdining.com.

NEWS4U | SPECIAL FEATURE

WILLIAM TYLER EBLIN Kids Wish Network grants ailing tri-state boy a once-in-alifetime meeting with country music idol daily struggles - a personality trait that makes Tyler well-suited for his dream job: a preacher. It's the ideal position for someone who so thoroughly enjoys serving people, and his family and friends pray he'll be healthy enough to pursue that course in the years to come.

W

hile most children his age have few worries or responsibilities, William Tyler Eblin - or simply "Tyler" as he's known to classmates and family members - has a lot more on his mind these days. That's because this loving boy from West Salem, IL is living with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), a rare inherited condition that causes extra tissue to form throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. If left untreated, the polyps are likely to become cancerous. Both Tyler's grandfather and mother were diagnosed with FAP, and sadly, while the diagnosis came early enough for his grandfather, his mother found out too late and passed away. But even with all the adversity that Tyler has faced, including surgery to remove large polyps that were found in his lower intestine, he's managed to maintain a positive outlook. By all accounts, he's incredibly selfless; much more concerned with the needs of others than his

20 |

Of course, Tyler's situation and selfless ways haven't gone unnoticed. In fact, Kids Wish Network, a national children's charity, recently became aware of this amazing young man and decided it was high time to make his day. How? By granting Tyler's wish of attending a Keith Urban concert and meeting the country music superstar in person. Not only did the nonprofit organization set up this once-in-a-lifetime encounter, but they also revealed it in a super fun way. On November 1, Tyler participated in an interactive scavenger hunt that began at Davina's Kountry Kitchen in Graysville, IL and then headed to the River Church at Mt. Zion Methodist Church before concluding at McLean Implement Inc. Retail Store in Albion, IL. There, he was given the lifealtering news - an unforgettable moment for everyone involved.

Saturday, November 12. Finally, the big day had arrived. Tyler and his family made it to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, IL around 5:30 p.m. and patiently waited for the pre-concert meeting with Keith Urban. Soon enough, they were all escorted to an appointed room where Tyler's idol welcomed them. What was said between the superstar and this very special boy is private, of course, but we do know that the experience was equally affecting for both Keith and Tyler - a truly heartwarming moment that will be forever cherished! fter a rousing first half of the 2016-2017 season that featured everything from Leonard Bernstein's Mass to a spooky Halloween Bash, Maestro Alfred Savia and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra are starting the second half by playing to their ultimate strength - the masters of classical music. The first EPO production of the new year will feature Mozart's March in D Major "Haffner," K. 249 and Serenata Notturna, K. 239, Haydn's Symphony No. 94 in G Major "Surprise" and Beethoven's "Violin Concerto." But they won't be going it alone. Quite enticingly, they'll be joined on stage by one of America's most revered violinists: Tessa Lark. Lark was named the Silver Medalist of the 9th Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (the highestranked American-born winner in the competition's history) and winner of the Naumburg International Violin Award. Those two achievements alone would make a fantastic career; however, she's also been named a recipient of the 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant and received a career grant from the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Fund for the Performing and Visual Arts. Other awards include the first prize in both the 2008 Irving Klein International Strings Competition and the 2006 Johansen International Competition for Young String Players. In short, Lark possesses an "astounding range of sounds, technical agility and musical elegance." The fact that such a supremely gifted musician has chosen to collaborate with the EPO speaks volumes about the respect

Tessa Lark that Maestro Savia and the orchestra command from the upper echelon of classical music. And more high profile collaborations are in store in the coming months. March sees the return of New York's electrifying Project Trio as the innovative ensemble takes on Tchaikovsky and a thrilling new work by Adam Schoenberg, a rising young American star. In April, the EPO welcomes American pianist Spencer Myer, lauded for his "superb playing" by the Boston Globe. Together, he and the orchestra will perform the works of Gershwin, Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Bela Bartok. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, because next month's performance might be the most anticipated of all. Indeed, February features a collaboration with the one and only Cirque de la Symphonie. Witness world-class performers achieving seemingly impossible combinations of strength and acrobatics perfectly timed to music from Titanic, Hook and more. Simply put, it's not something you see every day at the theatre. "Love is in the Air" is a wholly unique Pops Series production that's sure to appeal to people of all ages.
