EDITOR A QUICK NOTE FROM THE

N

ow that everyone's been scared half to death at the various area haunted houses and heart rates are finally starting to normalize, it's on to November. That means Thanksgiving, of course, but also a host of happenings that should be of great interest to the tri-state. If you're a fan of live music, you don't want to miss Carrie Underwood at the Ford Center this month - a concert five years in the making. There's been a concerted effort to bring the American Idol star to downtown Evansville ever since the venue opened, and now the dream is reality. On a slightly smaller scale, but still incredibly cool, everyone's favorite local cover band is reuniting for one night only at KC's Time Out Lounge on November 23. Yes, Gonzo's Toybox - with original singer Mark Goines back in the fold - will once again bring the rock from all eras and genres to a packed house. It's going to get seriously crazy, believe me. Speaking of packed houses, Evansville's very own "super hero," weightlifter Collin Clarke, made a triumphant return to the Kentucky Muscle competition in Louisville at the end of October. This remarkable young man with Down syndrome has inspired so many people by achieving his dreams despite personal and societal challenges. We caught up with Collin a couple of weeks before the big event, and boy, was he excited! And in case you somehow missed it, our main feature this month is the history of tri-state taverns. It's pretty amazing how long some of these places have been around, but few of us stop to think about that when we're ordering another round. Hopefully, you will now. All that and more inside. - TE

GONZO'S TOYBOX "FAMILY REUNION" SHOW KC'S TIMEOUT LOUNGE

|

NOVEMBER 23

|

9 : 3 0 P. M .

Hugging it out: Hugely popular cover band getting back together for one final celebration

I

t's a show that's been a long time coming. The history of Gonzo's Toybox - or at the least the idea of the band - goes back 20 years. That's when founding member Fred Hunt first thought of the unusual name. But the gregarious guitarist's intuition told him to hold onto it until the right musical project came along - or more specifically, the right singer. Responding to a classified ad for a metal outfit that Hunt was playing in circa 1998, Mark Goines changed everything. Three years later, the two booked their first gig as Gonzo's Toybox, a muscular cover band fleshed out with a few of the tri-state's most talented musicians. Their set list always erred on the heavier side of things - Drowning Pool, Metallica and Motley Crue, for example. Still, the guys always knew when to dial it down a notch, always paid attention to the mood of the crowd. In short order, Gonzo's Toybox became a huge draw, routinely packing places like Fast Eddy's back in the day. Legend has it that they were, in fact, a little too hot on a certain Saturday night at Woody's in 2009. The building burned down not long after the band left the stage. Members came and went over the years before Goines and Hunt finally settled on the quintessential lineup in 2008, featuring Glen Foust on drums, Ed Sein on guitar and Stuart Martin on bass. With a palpable chemistry between them, the fire was reignited - gigs came fast and furious all over the tri-state with massive shows at KC's, in particular. But eventually, Goines lost the feel for the music and Hunt became disillusioned with the scene all together. A "final" show with a replacement singer was staged a year ago. And then it all went quiet... But the story of Gonzo's Toybox is destined to have a fairytale ending. Goines began texting the other guys some months back, hinting at a possible one-off performance to bring everything full circle. It took some convincing, but even Hunt came around to the idea eventually. Now the classic GT lineup is set to rock KC's again, once more with feeling.

We caught up with the guys at a rehearsal for the big "Family Reunion." Considering that you left the band, what made you want to do it all again - at least one more time? MARK: I would have to say that it was my daughter. I was taking her to acting class. Usually, I just wait in the parking lot and on this day, I was trying to learn Japanese - was just listening to the lesson in my car. When my daughter came out, she said, 'Daddy, what are you doing?' and I said, 'I'm trying to learn Japanese.' She goes, 'You need to find something to do - like music again.' And I said, 'Honey, I wish I had something like your acting that I was passionate about, but I just can't feel the music.' So she said, 'Daddy, I'm going to play you a song' and it was "Car Radio" by Twenty One Pilots. I thought it was kind of cool and later on she played some other songs. I started watching some of the videos for them and playing ukulele; my girlfriend started taking me to concerts. Little by little, I just felt everything growing inside of me. So, I was just praying that the guys would want to do at least one show. I want to figure out where I'm going to go next and feel like a Gonzo's show would be a great venture - a way to pool all our talents together. It's great publicity for each band and side project that everybody is in. I still think it's a celebration of Gonzo's going forward, but I also think we can help each other with what's coming next.

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS MARK: Even within the custom set, we all just somehow knew if a particular song wasn't going to work that night and one of us would just start playing a different one. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about that - it was always so cool. When I was going through my last period with the band, and I was starting to go cold or whatever, I still felt that, but it didn't go all the way to the center somehow. I hated being the person that was the last one to show up and the first one to leave. The guys would ask me how I was doing, and I tried to be upbeat, but everyone knew I wasn't enjoying it as much, and I hated the way I made the guys feel. That's why I had to stop. Amusing road story?

Assuming that the show is going to be huge... is this really it? STUART: Never say never. When Gonzo's did our last show, I was joking around with Fred and said, 'How about in six months we get a hold of Mark and do a reunion?' And at the time, he said, 'No way.' But I had been texting Mark prior to that, and he was telling me that he was starting to feel the passion for the music again, and so I kind of had a gut feeling that it could all evolve into a big show like this. But I learned a long time ago that you don't push Mark into anything - just wait until he's ready. And when he sent that text about doing one more show, I knew it was going to happen. What are you expecting from the "Family Reunion?" ED: It's going to be a huge party - it really is a "family reunion" because when I first joined the band, I was welcomed to the "Gonzo family." And the crowd is as much a part of the band in many ways as us. I mean, we've had people propose on stage during our shows; we know for a fact that we've helped people through some very tough times in their lives by entertaining them. We're a part of this community - we all live here. Over the years, you see the same faces and become friends. They're probably going to have to drag me up on stage because we're all going to be hanging out with friends that we haven't seen in a long time. How difficult was it to choose the set list? GLEN: Well, there are a number of songs that are either crowd favorites or our favorites - that's a given right off the bat. For instance, Stuart did a version of "The Wall," and I did a Metallica tune - "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Motley Crue... Drowning Pool's "Bodies" - a lot of staples of the Gonzo set. The harder part was us all sitting down and finding a flow to it all, because it's going to be firing on all cylinders for the whole show. ED: The irony is that we actually sat down and put this list together whereas we never did that before. With Toybox, Mark would make a set list just before we started playing and when people would ask what songs we were going to play, I had no idea - it was nice to be able to say that every time you came to see Gonzo's Toybox, it was going to be a custom set. It's all done on the fly depending on the vibe of the room that night, how we're feeling, etc. It was a great experience as a musician, because you always had to keep your chops up and be prepared to play any of our 80 songs.

STUART: We had a show over in Owensboro and we all had rooms at the hotel - it was New Year's Eve. Well, show time arrived and there was no Mark - and he's usually on time. We knew he was there somewhere, because his wife was in the bar with us. So we decided that if we started playing, he would surely hear us and come on up to the stage. Before we knew it, we had gone through the whole first set. So, we sent out the search party for Mark when we went on break. It turns out he was in the bathroom. He had taken a shower and when he went to pull the door handle to get out, the whole knob fell off in his hand - he was locked inside the bathroom wearing only a towel. What shows really stand out for you when you look back at the band's career? FRED: The first one that comes to mind for me was the Freedom Festival in 2007. It was just an ocean of people. And they weren't just milling about they were into it, pressed up against the barrier. They were into every song we were doing. It's like we could have just said, 'Kill!' and they would have taken somebody out. Haubstadt Sommerfest was another big one. We were one of the first bands that I know of to be invited to play three nights in a row - and it was packed each night. And every year we played, there was a goddamn tornado (laughs), but the thing that was cool about it was that everyone stayed and the show went on - it was amazing. Another one that stands out is a show we did at Woody's - it was just a normal show. But we've always been very big about supporting the troops overseas, and we would always do a song for them. After we went on a break, a young guy walked up to me and he said, 'I want you to have this' and he handed me his dogtags. Then he said, 'You guys have meant so much to us over the years, because when we were overseas, we would watch your videos, and I would tell all the other guys about the good times that we had at the Gonzo shows, and they would look you up. Even though we had been performing for a long time, it was at that moment I realized that we really mean something to people. It was a humbling and frightening experience all at the same time. THE BRIAN SETZER

Orchestra 13TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS ROCKS! TOUR OLD NATIONAL EVENTS PLAZA | DECEMBER 7 | 8 P.M.

The reigning king of rockabilly talks Stray Cats, big bands, recording in Osaka and more

L

ong considered one of the greatest guitarists alive, Brian Setzer first made his mark as the pompadoured lead singer of the Stray Cats, a 50's rock and roll-inspired trio out of New York that hit the top ten three times in the decade of excess. "Stray Cat Strut," "Rock This Town" and "(She's) Sexy & 17" all sounded out of time in the early 80's - but all for the better. Despite the success, the band parted ways after just a few years and Setzer set off on a truly unique musical path - one that has included both roots-rock and rockabilly solo albums, Grammy awards and a big band revival that went mainstream with a raucous cover of everyone's go-to swing song, "Jump Jive An' Wail."Indeed, the nearly 20-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra not only made the wail of brass and horns cool again, the guys even made Christmas music rock - and still do. Every year, the band revamps the classics with a high energy holiday show. The 2016 tour also features tracks from their latest Christmas album, Rockin' Rudolph. When "Stray Cat Strut" hit the airwaves in 1982, both the music and your vocal approach sounded completely distinct from the sound of the day. I was never really attracted to the sound of the day growing up, I guess you could say. Growing up in the late 60's, early 70's - I couldn't relate to the music at the time. When I first heard that rockabilly sound, it just kind of grabbed me by the neck. I related to the simplicity of it, but also the musicianship of it - it just kind of spoke to me. As for my vocal style, I just kind of let it out - I wasn't really trying to sound like anyone in particular. I was just trying to find myself and that's what came out on those first couple of records. I was 19 or 20 at the time - we just let it fly.

our videos got around - that's what really got the word around here in the States. The Stray Cats were probably one of the first dozen or so bands on the channel. When you formed the Brian Setzer Orchestra, was the dynamic of playing with 18 or 19 people as opposed to the simplicity of a trio as different as it seemed from the outside? That's a good question, because it really seems like it would be such a different thing. But to me, it really wasn't that big of a change, because what I always pictured when I did the big band was... it really came from the old Johnny Carson Tonight Show. I watched it as a kid, and I pictured myself playing in that band. I thought, 'Wow, imagine if I could put the Stray Cats in front of that band.' And we almost had the chance - I think they wanted us on there but the show kind of came to a close. Anyway, I know how to read and write music, so just being restless the way I am, I started writing all those parts - they all came flying into my head. And all of a sudden I had a big band put together. Really, I just kind of played the same way. Musically, there are a lot more chords flying by. People will often ask if feel tied down by that rockabilly. If anything, you're tied down more with the big band. You have to play along with the chords they're making. It's a musical thing - I can't just go off in a direction against the chords. But with the rockabilly band, it's just the

The Stray Cats first achieved success in the UK, but it wasn't until the third album, Built for Speed, that America finally took notice. What accounted for the delayed response over here? We went to the UK and really just found an adoring audience there - and France as well. Actually, we were really huge there. I mean, I probably toured more there than the UK. But here, it was hard getting the music around it's a big country. The UK could probably fit into New Jersey - it's not a big place and it's easy to get the word around. But when MTV came out, and Cont. on page 10

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS bass - it's just the root note. You can do whatever you want. Your 2014 solo album, Rockabilly Riot!, is right up there with your best. "The Girl with the Blues in Her Eyes" is a particular standout. What's the story behind that one? Oh, thanks! You know, I wrote that song, and I love the way my buddy, Mike Himelstein, writes lyrics. I gave him the music and he goes, 'I got a title - "The Girl with Blue Eyes."' And I said, 'No, wait a minute - "The Girl with the Blues in Her Eyes."' And then once I came up with that, he came up with those lyrics. I really like that song, too. I hope I get to play it live when I go out solo... probably in early 2018. It's really one of those songs that you record but most likely never get to play. But I've got to do it. You've got a live Blu-ray/CD of the "Rockabilly Riot! Tour" coming out soon. Did you choose Japan as the setting for a particular reason? It seems to work out for us. I did bring the show to Europe, but I made sure that we picked Osaka if we played Japan. Because Osaka is just like... you know, different cities in Japan have different vibes just like they do here. Osaka is kind of like Chicago - they're a wild, loyal crowd. Tokyo is a great crowd, too, but it's more cosmopolitan. So we chose Osaka to record the show, and it was a good call, I think. Was it your idea to do an annual Christmas show? 13 years on, it appears to have been a good one. It was not originally my idea. How it started was... do you remember the movie Jingle All the Way with Arnold Schwarzenegger? They asked me for a Christmas song with the big band. They wanted me to do "Jingle Bells." And I found a way to make it sound cool - I thought I did a good job with it. They said, 'Oh my god, can you write something for Lou Rawls? So I wrote a song and I arranged it - and then the requests just kept coming. I think I ended up with four songs in that movie. Then, there's this radio station called KROQ out in California. They started playing the heck out of all my rock and roll Christmas stuff. And it just wouldn't stop. So that's how the annual Christmas show got started - and then it snowballed. I mean, I love it because I can throw whatever I want into the show when I arrange the Christmas songs. Plus, I get to bring my wife and my dog. And let me just end it with one thing: I see it every year - you can be the biggest Grinch, but when the holidays roll around, everybody softens up and says, 'Well, maybe I do want to go see a little Christmas.' I guess that's one of the reasons why I play every year. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com. ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

NOVEMBER 11

Downtown Evansville's premier event venue celebrating fifth anniversary with country's biggest star

T

he most successful American Idol of all time, Carrie Underwood continues to amaze fans and critics alike with her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence. Her ability to keep huge audiences across the world enrapt from the first note to the last is a testament to how far she's come since her memorable audition in front of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson over 10 years ago. From sweet, down home girl to country music's undeniable megastar, the Oklahoma native's transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. Underwood's many accomplishments include seven Grammy Awards, 17 Billboard Music Awards, 12 Academy of Country Music Awards and nine American Music Awards. Perhaps most impressive of all, 2005's Some Hearts ranks as the fastest-selling country music debut in SoundScan history. Subsequent releases have all reached the top of the charts, including last year's Storyteller which includes the number one singles, "Heartbeat" and "Church Bells." The album, which also produced the number two hit, "Smoke Break," followed the birth of the singer's first child. Underwood's tour stop in Evansville has been a long time coming, but her appearance at the Ford Center is perfectly-timed to celebrate the venue's fifth anniversary. Special guests include Easton Corbin - best known for the number one hits "A Little More Country Than That" and "Roll With It" - and the Swon Brothers. WE EXPLORE THE HISTORY OF SOME OF THE AREA'S FRIENDLIEST NEIGHBORHOOD BARS

W

ith the cold weather slowly creeping into the tri-state, the thought of holing up in one of our many old-school drinking establishments for the night sounds awfully good right about now. Hanging with friends in a warm, cozy little neighborhood tavern on a chilly evening... that's one of life's true pleasures in our little neck of the woods. Sure, bigger cities have their share of locally-owned corner bars and hideaways; however, it's the history seeped into the walls of our favorite spots that simply can't be reproduced. Consider that places like the Lakeview Inn in Chandler and Shorty's and the Stockyard Inn in Evansville date all the way back to the Prohibition era when a Constitutional amendment was enacted to stop the flow of alcohol (and barrels of the hard stuff was often bootlegged out the back). Imagine that - no beer. Actually, no one wants to imagine that. Still, the next time you're ordering up another round for you and your buds at one of the tri-state's iconic taverns, do stop to think. Think about all of the patrons who have passed through that door over time, all the different owners who have put their blood, sweat and tears into keeping that operation up and running for you. Admittedly, it's a lot to ask of a thirsty customer - but take just a moment to look around and take in the scene; acknowledge that you're lucky to have such a comfortable, welcoming place to frequent. In today's wacko world, that's something to cherish. But enough talk - let's cut the chatter and go back in time on a little Tri-State Tavern Tour...

EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC

ORCHESTRA PRESENTS: Leonard Bernstein's Mass V I C T O R Y T H E AT R E

|

N O V E M B E R 1 2 @ 7 P. M .

Maestro Savia's "bucket list" production takes center stage for the EPO's November performance

A

fter an appropriately creepy Halloween performance to close out October, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra returns this month with an ambitious Classics Series production of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, featuring critically-acclaimed baritone and Broadway star, Jubilant Sykes, in the charismatic role of the Celebrant. Commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971, Mass presents a unique challenge for both conductor and players. Maestro Savia kindly spoke with News4U about the production that's long been on his "bucket list." To your mind, what makes Mass such a special piece to perform? There is not only no other musical setting of the Catholic Mass that is anything like Bernstein's, there is no other musical composition that is anything like it. It uses the Mass as a starting point, but explores all the questions people (especially young people, represented by the "Street Singers") have about their faith in the most musically dramatic and theatrical way. It is also a blend of both traditional "classical" music, including some poignantly beautiful writing for the orchestra strings - and other forms one would normally never associate with a musical setting of the Mass: Rock, Folk, Blues, even Marching Band music! For fans of West Side Story, there's even Lenny's Broadway side. Having been a part of a big Mass production four decades ago in Indianapolis, how are you approaching this performance all these years later? Mass is in fact subtitled "A Theatre piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers," and the performance in Indianapolis' Clowes Hall (which involved performers from the music, theater and dance departments at Butler University's Jordan College of the Arts) was indeed that. Over the years it has been modified into a concert version, even one that uses a very small orchestra. Our production will use the full instrumental and vocal performances of the original version but will slightly scale back the theatrical part to make the production more practical and

24 |

November 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

financially feasible. This "Theatrical Concert" version is probably the way it is most often performed today. We will, for example, Jubilant Sykes have a Marching Band element, but they won't actually be marching through the hall. However, with David Starkey and Jubilant Sykes as co-directors, there will be a strong and compelling theatrical element to our performance. What led to choosing Jubilant Sykes as the Celebrant/Baritone for the performance? That was a no-brainer! I said from the get-go, if we possibly can, we must have Jubilant Sykes as the Celebrant. Jubilant practically owns this role right now - he sings in virtually every major performance of Mass around the world and was the Celebrant/Baritone on the highly acclaimed Baltimore Symphony recording of Mass. Once my friend and colleague David Starkey (Executive and Artistic Director of the Asheville Lyric Opera) was on board to produce and direct our Mass, he offered to speak to Jubilant directly and persuaded him to come to Evansville to not only sing but, for the first time, co-direct our production. Instead of singers with Broadway credentials, we are using the most talented student singers and actors from both University of Evansville and University of Southern Indiana in the very collaborative endeavor. Jubilant is really excited to be able to share his insights into the work with these young musicians, and they have the opportunity to work closely with a true Broadway star! 83 HADI SHRINE CIRCUS RD

FORD CENTER | NOVEMBER 24-27

One of the last remaining three ring circuses in the nation is back and better than ever

I

ncredibly, 2016 marks the 83rd edition of the Hadi Shrine Circus. It’s a remarkable run that has eclipsed virtually every other production in North America. Since it first debuted all those years ago, more than three million people have attended the circus – young and old alike. This wonderful tradition has become an integral part of the holidays, an event that everyone can enjoy and share in the fun. Simply put, it just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the circus. Amazingly, the Hadi Shrine Circus keeps the show moving and the action non-stop for three solid hours. Over the last several years, the production has really stepped up its game, changing with the times to incorporate more special effects, contemporary music and dramatic, dazzling lights, bringing a lot more pop to traditional acts such as jugglers, acrobats and lion tamers.

Incredible

HADI SHRINE CIRCUS FACTS: • It’s the longest running, continuous circus in North America

But as always, the animals are the true stars of the show – from the elephants to the lions, even the rescue dogs that are specially-trained for the circus. And it’s comforting to know that they are all provided the greatest care. The organizers take the job of keeping them in good health very, very seriously and aim to set an example for the community. With all of the hard work and planning that goes into the circus, it’s no wonder that generations of families and performers keep coming back. Everyone involved puts their heart and soul into the production and in turn, the tri-state area continues to support this longstanding tradition in a big way. 7TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY CRAFT & GIFT SHOW RIBEYRE GYM | NEW HARMONY, IN | NOVEMBER 19 | 9AM - 4PM

Doggone it, Posey County's volunteer animal shelter needs your support to save more lives

t Takes A Village No-Kill Canine Rescue hosts a number of great fundraising events throughout the year, such as the very popular Canine Carnival & Mardi Paws and the equally beloved Helping Hounds Craft Fair. Entering its fourth year, Helping Hounds brings together area crafters and vendors for a fun-filled day that includes a silent auction and door prizes. A $1 entry donation is requested with all proceeds from the event going to benefit the dogs of ITV. And be sure to bring your furry friend(s) to ITV on December 3 & 10 for a super cute picture with Santa! No appointment necessary. Just come on out and let your pup, bunny or kitty tell Santa what they really want for Christmas! You can also bring your kids! Cost is only $15 and includes a 4x6 photo and digital file of your pet and Santa. All proceeds benefit the dogs of ITV. ITV's mission is to provide a safe haven for abandoned dogs and to find permanent loving homes for them. The non-profit organization rescue dogs from high-kill shelters throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama, including from Evansville Animal Control, Warrick Animal Control, Daviess County Animal Control and Gibson County Animal Control. Aldersgate United Methodist Church is located at 5130 Lincoln Ave. in Evansville. For more info about the Helping Hounds Craft Fair, email lori@itvrescue.org. For all the latest ITV news and animal updates, follow It Takes A Village on Facebook. ITV is located at 1417 N. Stockwell Rd. in Evansville.

t's that time of year again - time for the tri-state to help out the good people at PC Pound Puppies in their efforts to provide proper medical care for the shelter's rescued dogs and adopt them out to just the right family. Every year, the organization holds a super fun event with lots of local vendors and an auction featuring all sorts of crafts and gift items. This year, PC Pound Puppies is hoping to spice up their donations from the public and are requesting the following items for the auction: coffee basket car detailing basket wine basket date night basket ice cream sundae basket game night basket movie night basket camping basket chocoholic basket kids basket (Boy/Girl) pamper yourself basket candle basket Christmas cookie making basket liquor basket grill basket gardening basket The deadline for auction donations is November 4. However, if you miss the cut-off, you can still help out in a meaningful way by attending the event and purchasing an item. Every little bit counts and can make all the difference for a dog in need! The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring along a donation that PCPP can use for homeless dogs. New collars and leashes, new dog toys, new or gently used dog crates (wire or plastic, especially large sizes), flea and heart worm preventives, paper towels, and spray cleaners are needed. For more info or to inquire about booth rental, contact Cathy Powers at 812-9633890 or 812-499-6413 or garnetmist@aol.com.

xciting things are happening downtown, and the continuous desire to revitalize Evansville's historic area is a perfect fit for Arazu on Main. The Persian word for wish or desire, "Arazu" is already a well-known brand. The original Cafe Arazu sits on Newburgh's riverfront, and has done an excellent job of providing Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean fusion cuisine, a gorgeous view, and a singular experience. Owners Penny and Ben Nejad, after solidifying their initial establishment and opening a second seasonal business (Ben & Penny's -an ice cream, sandwich, and local gift shop), now aim to open Arazu on Main. Located in the building that previously housed The Jungle, the new restaurant is a welcome addition. Renovation has been going strong throughout the summer, but from appearances, they have maintained much of the historic charm. The menu has not yet been solidified, but we can expect fusion dishes similar to the Newburgh location as well as new items, and Nejad plans to provide a higher-end experience. They will also offer a full bar with specialty cocktails and a large wine selection, and will accept reservations. Although the opening was slated for end of summer/ early fall, posts from their page indicate that it shouldn't be too much longer, and will be "worth the wait." Anyone who isn't familiar with Cafe Arazu can get an idea of what to expect by visiting the Newburgh location, and for updates on the grand openning, future guests are encouraged to follow their Facebook page and sign up for their email list. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | WESTERN KENTUCKY WHAT'S COOKIN'

101 W. 2ND STREET, OWENSBORO KY 270-684-7800

S

tarted as a small pizzeria in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974, Mellow Mushroom has grown into a household name. With over 200 locations across the U.S., the newer Owensboro location is a welcome addition to downtown. The restaurant features menu items crafted ahead of their time, decor that takes us back to their roots, a relaxed ambiance, chill tunes, and a staff that displays the success story that is Mellow Mushroom. Matt Holderfield is no stranger to the vibe and dedication of the establishment - he's been a loyal team member for over six years, starting off at the bottom and working his way up to GM. His enthusiastic and informative tour of the restaurant proves that there's so much more to the brand than delicious pies. During my visit, I was served three appetizers - the bruschetta, (which was undeniably the best I've ever had) a light option of garlic toast points topped with tomatoes, fresh basil, feta cheese, balsamic vinegar, and drizzled with balsamic glaze. A Mellow Mushroom favorite, the meatball trio, came next - three meatballs

made in-house, grilled and stuffed with cheese atop their tangy, sweet red sauce with basil and shaved parmesan. Last but certainly not least, I tried a stuffed portobello mushroom and it was love at first bite. Although large enough to share, I probably wouldn't - this masterpiece is filled with feta, mozzarella, artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, and spinach, basted with garlic butter, baked, served on a bed of spring mix and vinaigrette with more of their tasty balsamic glaze. I was nearly full, but alas, it is the Mellow Mushroom, so I couldn't leave without trying a pizza... or two. And maybe a pita sandwich. The mushroom club was impeccably executed, with ham,

applewood bacon, provolone, caramelized onions, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, sprouts, lettuce and mayo, and the memorably-named pizzas were exactly what I expected. The Great White is an upgrade on a traditional margherita pizza - provolone, feta, ricotta, mozzarella, sun dried and roma tomatoes, and onions with an olive oil/ garlic base. The Maui Wowie, which sources say is Bob Marley's favorite pie (although this statement can neither be confirmed nor denied) was my final conquest. The chewy, fluffy dough has a pesto base, is basted with more pesto (yay, pesto), with mozzarella, ham, pineapple, jerk chicken, applewood bacon, and banana peppers. The jury's still out on Bob Marley,

but it's definitely approved by me. Next trip - Magic Mushroom Soup and Thai Dye pizza. With 32 beers on tap, a full bar, an impressive (and marked) selection of vegan/vegetarian items, gluten free crust options, a full bar, patio, and access to the downtown trolley service, the future of this new fixture is looking very bright. It's easy to see why they've continued to grow upward and outward for over 40 years definitely more than worth a short trip over the blue bridge. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Sun- Thurs 11 a.m.-10 p.m. / Fri & Sat 11 a.m.- 11 p.m. Follow Mellow Mushroom Owensboro on Facebook.

NEWS4U | WKY MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

Carrie Lyn & The String Getup Eluding the limelight: refreshingly modest singer not much for self-promotion

I

n this age of social media, talented musicians seemingly have the world's attention at their fingertips with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube never more than a few clicks away. The technology is there to self-promote at will; who wouldn't want to take advantage of it? Well, Carrie Lyn Houtchen for one. This thirty-something Calhoun, KY native is not your average artist. While she loves to play, loves to strum her guitar and belt out everything from Fleetwood Mac to Merle Haggard - and especially her idol, Lucinda Williams - with that strong, bluesy voice of hers, Houtchen isn't overly-drawn to performance, mostly shunning the spotlight. She even avoids committing her songs to tape. The reason? "I can't stand to hear myself on recordings it's so hard for me, because I'm very self-critical," she states, though it comes across more like an apology. But clearly, there's no need to be sorry. Modesty has pretty much become a lost art form, and frankly, it's refreshing to see someone take such an attitude - to basically say, "People who like me will find me." In fact, Houtchen did say that, although the "me" was actually "us" and it was in reference to her cool new trio, Carrie Lyn & The String Getup. "For years I didn't want to play with anybody - I always said that I don't play well with others," she explains. "Most times the other people don't get your vision, they don't hear what you're wanting to sound like." However, after a solo gig at McGrady's in Owensboro, Jason Morris, a local upright bass player, approached her and

offered his services. This time something just clicked. Not long after, Morris suggested that his buddy Eric join in on mandolin another perfect fit in more ways than one. "He's gone on to be my husband," Houtchen says. Backed by such complementary musicians, her aversion to being in the public eye has lessened a bit, performances have become

NEWS4U | WKY MUSIC SPOTLIGHT more frequent. Of course, it certainly helps when the crowds are so appreciative. "We had an amazing gig the other night at CYO in Owensboro - amazing energy," she says with noticeable excitement. "We needed that boost, that little shot to point us in the right direction." The "right direction," in Houtchen's mind, does not include playing "Wagon Wheel" or any other standard covers. Rather, she and the guys focus on "trying to bring back some of the old time blues and re-do them a little bit." That means digging up lost songs by people like Jimmy Rogers, songs that audiences may have never heard. The burgeoning trio's set list also includes bands like the Grateful Dead and folk legend John Hartford. The timing of this new musical format couldn't be better for Houtchens. A little over six months ago, she decided to quit her job and just be creative. That means concentrating solely on her music and her business, an interior design/decor and custom artwork shop called the Bohemian Shed. "I went to school for electrical engineering and worked in kidney dialysis for 16 years, but now I'm just going to be broke and artsy for the rest of my life," Houtchens laughs. But at least she'll have more opportunities to get the word out about Carrie Lyn & The String Getup. Wait, get the word out? What's happening?! Yes, Houtchen and the guys are starting to take some self-promotion baby steps, believe it or not. The trio now has a Facebook page that lists upcoming gigs - but not a whole lot else. In time, in time. Speaking of gigs, you can catch Carrie Lyn & The String Getup on December 2 at the scene of their best show to date: CYO Brewing. And do check the trio's fancy new Facebook site for more info on occasion. Now that Houtchen has finally made the move to social media, anything is possible - there's even talk of recording original material. "We're back to writing again, playing songs that we're really connected to. We're really excited about moving forward with our little string band." Ah, there's that endearingly modest outlook again.

oosier Hysteria, an annual fan favorite event designed to kick off the season for both the men's and women's basketball teams, recently took place at the newly-renovated Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. The October 22nd event was - as always - a wild celebration of one of the most storied programs in the NCAA. From the five national titles and iconic coaches to the instantly recognizable candy stripe pants, IU basketball is a way of life for the many students, parents and general sports nuts that packed the house in a build-up to the opening tip-off on November 11. “It’s essentially a Hoosier lovefest,” says IU professor Terry Hutchens. “It’s a really cool event because there is such a sense of anticipation that comes with it. There are over 10,000 people there and it just shows you how passionate people are about Indiana basketball.” This year, fans heard from head coach Tom Crean and were treated to a dunk contest between the members of the men’s team, as well as a 3-point shooting contest between both the men’s and women’s teams. The excitement reached a fever pitch with a scrimmage

amongst the men's players, wrapping up a truly unique experience for all in attendance. "The event is one of a kind," IU junior Ali Lebano says, summing up the appeal of Hoosier Hysteria. “Being encompassed by the atmosphere of Assembly Hall is like nothing else, and it makes me so excited and so proud to be cheering on the Hoosiers.” Hoosier Hysteria was made even more special this year as it was the first official event held in the newly-renovated Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The $40 million updates, made generously by philanthropist and IU alumna Cindy Simon Skjodt, include a new south lobby, glass atrium that provides fans with a view of the court and a new hospitality suite, the Henke Spirt of ‘76 Club. 2016 Big Ten regular season champs, the Hoosiers finished 27-8 under Tom Crean, advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. It’s safe to say that there's a lot of hype surrounding the new squad; fans have literally been counting down the days until their beloved team takes the court and begins the quest for a sixth national title. Hoosier Hysteria, indeed! - Caitlin Blackford

ven if you don't know the story of local weightlifter Collin Clarke, you've probably seen his smiling face and sculpted physique on a huge billboard in town while cruising up and down Green River Road (really, you can't miss it). The gigantic "advertisement" for his non-profit organization, Collination, is the culmination of an incredible journey that began in March of 2015 when Collin attended a bodybuilding show in Evansville. Fritz GAHL: BAR BOUNCER

Keeping the peace: KC's well-traveled security man has seen it all and then some

O

ver three decades of bar bouncing. That would seemingly do just about anybody's head in, but Fritz Gahl is made of something a little tougher than the rest of us - something a lot tougher, actually. Though the 55-year-old Mt. Vernon native admits the job isn't anywhere near as nerve-racking as it used to be (KC's Time Out Lounge GM Chad Brady jokingly refers to his current situation there as "cushy"), he certainly has experienced his share of close shaves, especially back in the days when the Evansville night club scene often resembled a scene out of Roadhouse. According to Gahl, the sight of bottles and bodies flying was routine when he first accepted a security position at the long-defunct Funky's 2 in 1981 - just a few months after he was finally old enough to get in. But more on that shortly. Looking at Gahl today with his intimidating physique and Steven Seagalinspired ponytail, it's hard to imagine that anyone has ever given him any crap. But in fact, his transformation into modern day badass was kickstarted years ago by some mouthy Mount Vernon students. "All through junior high and freshman year of high school I was bullied - I can't stand bullies," he explains. "But I got involved in wrestling and football and started working out, studied martial arts. I finally had a way to defend myself." That ability to hold his own came in handy one March night at the aforementioned Funky's 2. Gahl had just exited the bathroom and noticed that the night club's security was struggling to keep a fight from starting between a group of pool players. "I put my hand on the bouncer's shoulder and said, 'Handle your business, I got your back,'" he says. "Once everything was under control, I introduced myself - it wasn't long before the manager slipped me an application." Gahl's reputation as a take-no-prisoners kind of guy quickly grew - to the point where just the threat of action was often enough. "There was one

time when we were so packed [at Funky's 2] that I really couldn't even see a fight going on," he says. "Mike Sanders (WGBF's The Sandman) hollered at me from the DJ booth and pointed below. Two individuals that were brawling saw me coming and actually broke themselves up and raced towards the exit." After striking fear in the hearts of local rowdy bar patrons (though Fritz couldn't be nicer, really) for several years, Gahl took his show on the road - to Las Vegas. There he made connections, even landing a job at Caesar's Palace and exploring life as a personal bodyguard. But they don't call it the wild west for nothing. "At one point I was working at a place called the Las Vegas Club when a pan handler came in and started trouble," Gahl explains. "We threw him out, but then he came back in with a straight razor and was going after the staff. "I intervened as he was swinging, did a block, grabbed his wrist and twisted it, dislocated his elbow and pinned him to the ground - that's when doors started opening for me out there." Gahl eventually returned to Evansville for personal reasons and continued to bounce at a number of area night clubs, including the Village Saloon, Bridgeview in Henderson, Chances R and the Busy Body Lounge before KC's owner Kerry Chesser offered him a job at the tri-state's busiest bar four years ago. "I never thought I would be bouncing all these years, but I've met so many good people - people I thought I would never meet. I treat everybody the same, never play favorites. But if somebody steps out of line, Photos by: MikeHall-Photo.com I'll handle my business." Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • November 2016

h Thanksgiving, the holiday in which we celebrate the three main F’s: food, football and family. But scarfing down slices of pumpkin pie and cheering on your favorite team are nothing compared to dealing with your nosy family on turkey day. Of course, everyone’s family is different but after attending the Thanksgiving feasts of several different families over the years, I have noticed they all have one thing in common: they are all judgmental. For some reason, when they wake up on the last Thursday of every November, their rude thoughts about how you shouldn’t be wearing a sweater that low cut “because it gives boys the wrong impression” just begin to fly out of their mouths. And they aren’t even trying to be mean - they think they have your best interests at heart and if they don’t give you this one piece of sage advice now, just as you are about to get your second plate of mashed potatoes, then your life will take a turn for the worse and it will be all their fault for never having tried to save you. For most of my life, I had Thanksgiving meals at my aunt’s house, so I was used to hearing unsolicited comments about my how my life was going from actual family members. But the last two years, I’ve attended Thanksgiving at my boyfriend's house. Although Alex's family didn’t give me any “advice," some were more than happy to tell my boyfriend what he could be doing better in his life. Both Alex and I responded the same way when presented with these comments: we just smiled, sucked up our insecurities and agreed with them. And why did we do that? Because we didn’t want to instigate any confrontation and thought it would be better to be polite than dare challenge a relative we only see a few times a year. But that shouldn’t be the case! So my advice for anyone who gets comments from their family this Thanksgiving, is to say, “I appreciate what you have to say grandma but that hurt my feelings. I’m actually doing really well and am quite happy. So let’s have a good time together today.” You aren’t being rude by saying that. You are standing up for yourself. Because although it’s called Thanksgiving, it’s a day meant for giving thanks, not giving rude and uncalled for advice.

"THE RIVER STORY" BY JOHN THURGOOD M

ary slept in a small bed because she was small, but when her dad tucked her in at night, she had to curl her legs close to her stomach, so he could sit at the end and tell her bedtime stories. She often fell asleep like that, wrapped up in a ball. It made her feel like the boy who fell asleep at the bottom of the river. He had swum to the bottom and never came up. It was one of her favorite stories, and even though her dad had many stories to tell about the river, it was the one she always asked for. It was the one she called “The River Story." The story ended with the boy dying alone, surrounded by plows and wagons, hats and boots, and even trunks filled with gold. There was so much at the bottom of the river that it seemed like a whole separate village down there. The boy's village was huge, filled with so many people that it was impossible for everyone to know one another, and impossible to find a use for all the unwanted goods. That was how they found their way into the water. No one was to blame, and the underwater village went unnoticed. The boy was different, though. He was special. He could hold his breath longer than anyone he knew, and he practiced by swimming as far below the surface as he could. Each time he got farther and farther, until he started finding things down there. He found a locket that he gave to his mom. He found a hunting knife that he gave to his dad. Then he started finding really big things like tables and chairs. He even pulled from the depths a fully-loaded Chevy 3500 crew cab with an eight foot bed. All of it was in perfect condition. But even though he had found it, no one believed him. They thought he was stealing all of it, and if he didn't give it all back, he was going to be banished from the village forever. The boy was embarrassed. He was just a boy after all. So he took it all back as quickly as he could, but on his final trip down to the underwater village, he got lost. The rows of stuff looked like city blocks and all the roads looked the same. He wandered around for what seemed like hours, until he saw a bed that looked like it was made of gold. He felt tired, suddenly, and lay down for just a moment. He just needed a moment to rest, but all the wandering had taken its toll. He fell asleep almost instantly, and dreamt that he was at home, in his own bed, listening to a story that his dad had made up to help him fall asleep.

A rock-solid, deftly sequenced hour-and-45-minute long set, which moves from playful to solemn, smooth to twangy, and from cinematic scope to smaller, intimate moments. Tri-State Fashion

NEWS4U | FASHION ADVICE

with Gina Mullis, Owner of Amerie

Rock on: Leading ladies of the local music scene know what's hot for a night out this winter

Y

ou already know that this year’s trending cool weather fashion includes a variety of cozy, layered pieces and accessories. Let’s be honest, though, tri-state folks know how to have a good time after hours too, and those warm fall and winter pieces don’t always work when you’re out on the town. Jessica Overstreet, singer for the band Tastes Like Chicken, is a prime example of individuality and on-point fashion. Off stage, she agrees with the trending cool weather styles, but it’s an entirely different story with her on-stage appearance, as she takes on an alter-ego who thrives in party-mode. Her onstage fashion has evolved into what she calls, “…a living, breathing, party-starting, hell-cat entity of its own,” that includes pieces like highwaisted short shorts, thigh highs, “shit-kickin’floor-stompin’ combat boots,” and funky ties that match those of her co-stars. She encourages tri-staters to get into the same party spirit when going out for the night. Let the bright lights take over and bring out the same transformative, spunky spirit they do for her. “At the end of the day, it’s all about what you as an individual feel comfortable and confident in," Jess says. "Do you, and rock on!"

How should people vote in the upcoming election?

Q:

I do not think it is the place for members of the clergy to publicly endorse candidates from their pulpits and platforms. If you want to have a private conversation, I’ll buy the coffee. But there are a few criteria I would suggest for consideration as you prepare to vote. What do the candidates have to say about the poor? What are their plans to alleviate poverty and better the lives of those nearer the bottom of our social ladder? What about their lives and living persuades you they will carry through with their plans and promises? What do the candidates have to say about justice? What do their public pronouncements and practices tell you about how they approach “justice for all?” How do the candidates appear to “see” people or ignore people who are often the recipients of injustice and discrimination? How do the candidates employ fear in their campaigns? Fear leads to hate – plain and simple. Trust me, I work for an organization that for centuries used fear as its principle tool in controlling people. I know the power of fear. How are the candidates employing fear? Let’s be clear: there are not, nor have there ever been “perfect” candidates. There is no hero/heroine on the horizon that will set everything right. But we can look for “good” candidates – people who understand that we need to be one nation again and have a pretty clear idea of how to make that happen. A Day In the Park (Or “Lucy Says Relax”) I’ve never been a dog person. I’ve had cats ever since some girls we went to church with got me to convince my parents to adopt one of their kittens when I was only five. So I was a little worried about adjusting to living with one when I moved in with my wife and her perpetually timid dog (and three awesome cats, but that’s beside the point). Lucy - a beautiful yellow greyhound/pitbull mix - tends to get “pee-pee scared” whenever she’s anxious or nervous. Unfortunately, nervousness is pretty much a constant state with many greyhounds, and doubly so for a rescue like her. It’s taken the better part of the almost three years we’ve been together to gain her trust, but I feel like Lucy has taught me more about being patient than I could ever teach her about not being scared. A few weeks ago, we took the dog for a walk at the state hospital park. “Walk” isn’t exactly accurate; we knew we’d be running most of the time. You see, Lucy loves to chase squirrels. She perks up at just the word, so imagine her reaction to an area full of huge trees and their bushy-tailed inhabitants. Greyhounds are known for running fast, and Lucy’s no exception. I had to run fullsprint to keep up with her, and even then it helped to get a head start whenever I spotted one before her. At one point, she got to the end of her retractable leash before I had a chance to catch up. I couldn’t help but laugh as she fell, barrelrolled in the dirt, and kept running like nothing happened. And my wife and I kept laughing the whole time; no matter how many squirrels Lucy chased into trees, we didn’t want to stop. I had so much fun, in fact, that I completely forgot about all the negativity we’re all constantly being bombarded with these days. It reminded me of David Hume’s quote about how when life or philosophical matters began to weigh him down too much, he liked to relax and play backgammon. In an election year that’s been even more hostile than years past, we all could stand to just relax and play backgammon (metaphorically speaking) a little more often. It doesn’t mean we have to stop fighting for what’s right, but we have to be careful to not let it consume us.

WHITNEY by Whitney Patterson

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

A Race to Watch: Vanderburgh County Commissioner

The Fissure of Family "Everything ends badly. Otherwise, it wouldn't end." - Brian Flanagan, Cocktail Approximately 40-50% of all marriages in the United States end in divorce. There are contributing factors - incompatibility, infidelity, emotional/ physical abuse, addiction - but one thing is clear: when two people have made the decision to unite themselves legally and under the eyes of whatever higher power they believe in, when it ends, it's never pretty. Although the ultimate decision and reasoning behind two consenting adults deciding to sever marital ties can only be truly understood between the two parties, they're not the only people affected by this decision. In my generation, swiftly-executed marriages are not uncommon. Within the millenial hookup culture, pursuance and dedication often fall to the wayside, and long-term, committed relationships grow further and further between. Maybe it's the fear of following in our parents' and grandparents' footsteps - remaining in a lackluster or painful commitments for commitment's sake. We are also experiencing a growing trend of "grey divorce," a phenomenon of baby boomers and their predecessors splitting after decades of marriage. After nearly a lifetime together, one party or both decide that enough is enough and walk away. So many things have to be considered - material items such as homes, vehicles, businesses - but the most painful part is the fissure of family. Adult children of grey divorces may be the most victimized of all. While they may have enough experience to empathize with the reasons behind the divorce and support their parents' decision, this makes it no less difficult. Tack on the pressure to side with one parent, whether innate or proposed by family, and it's a hell of a cross to bear. I'm a firm believer that two people who are continuously unhappy in a relationship shouldn't stay together, but that decision is between you and your partner, and there should never be an expected chosen alliance with your kids, regardless of age. You're the parent - act like one. Exercise unconditional love, grieve, but do not project your pain on your child, regardless of circumstances. They're in enough pain of their own. Don't make them choose - it's selfish and horrific. They love you, just want to see you happy, and you should want the same for them. Signed, Whitney Patterson, an adult who's grateful for my parents' early divorce

This has been an exciting year for Indiana politics. Our current governor is on a national ticket for VP; the Democrats are trying to win the governorship for the first time since 2000 and they’re trying to recapture the Senate with the help of over-turning Indiana’s open-seat currently held by a Republican. However, Vanderburgh County voters should be just as intrigued by the down-ballot race for County Commissioner District 3 featuring two political heavyweights: Stephen Melcher and Cheryl Musgrave. Melcher, a Democrat, served on the Evansville City Council for 17 years and has been serving in his current role as Vanderburgh County Commissioner for the last two terms. Melcher's one blip on the radar has been his race for Indiana House District 75 where he lost to incumbent Holly Sullivan. Challenger Cheryl Musgrave, a Republican, has served as Vanderburgh County Assessor and was elected herself as County Commissioner in 2004. Her biggest political accomplishment was when former governor Mitch Daniels appointed her to serve as Commissioner of the State Department of Local Government Finance. This race has political ramifications. There are three County Commissioner seats, two of which are being contested this year. The outcome of the District 3 race could influence the District 1 race - which has two newcomers running - ultimately deciding which party has control of the County Commissioner seats for the next four years. SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH! A N I M A L S P O T L I G H T : M E E T C O C O , M I C K Y & M O L LY Coco - Coco is a 7-year-old female Japanese Chin mix! She was surrendered to VHS when her previous owners didn’t have enough time for her. She can be shy, which is common for little dogs like her. Loud noises and new people can be scary for her, so she needs a home with older children (or no children) and not a lot of boisterous activity. November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month, which is prime time to highlight older gals like Coco. Even though she’s older, little dogs are very popular. She will not last long! Her $120 adoption fee includes her spay, registered microchip, vaccinations, heartworm test, and more. Call (812) 426-2563 to inquire about her! Micky - Micky is a male American Staffordshire Terrier. He’s about 6 years old. While this isn’t “old” by any stretch of the imagination, it means that he often gets overlooked for younger dogs. His owner passed away, leaving him homeless. On Cardio for Canines walks, he is a perfectly pleasant companion. He loves all people, does not chase ducks, walks well on a leash after some initial excitement, and likes to play with other dogs. Micky’s already neutered and ready to go home today! His $100 adoption fee also includes his registered microchip, vaccinations, heartworm test, and more! Molly - Cats have a hard time getting adopted in shelters, but it’s even harder for senior cats. Molly has been waiting on a home longer than almost 300 other cats that have come through VHS since she arrived in April. She’s a petite tortoiseshell cat and she is about 10 years old. Molly has lived inside her whole life, and is seeking a comfortable indoor “retirement home” for the second half of her life. She’s vocal, friendly, gets along with other cats, and loves to be petted! Ask about our Senior Pets Program, which offers waived adoption fees for senior citizens over 70 adopting pets who are 7 or older!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

THE CLARKS & KEVIN THE CAT With an outside dog already at home, west-sider Tisha Clark and her kids had been wanting to get an indoor cat to round out the family. They visited the VHS no less than three times before finally meeting just right the one back in July, a "very pretty and very playful" little fellow with tiger-like stripes named Kevin. Just six months old at the time, he adjusted easily to his new surroundings. "It's been great - he is a crazy cat," Tisha says with a chuckle. "He's loving and really good with the kids." After a long day of silliness, Kevin reportedly enjoys solo time in the living room recliner. But now he has some company, because the family recently took in a stray cat that showed up at their door. With no identification and no apparent owner, the female feline really lucked out - Tisha took her to the VHS for the appropriate shots and gave her a new home. What does Kevin think about all of this? "They're still transitioning together," Tisha says. "She's an older cat - about six years old - and Kevin's wanting to play all the time." Rest assured it's just a matter of time before these two become best friends.

Trolls (PG)

Release Date: 11/4 From the creators of Shrek comes DreamWorks Animation's Trolls, a smart, funny, and irreverent comedy about the search for happiness, and just how far some will go to get it. This hilarious film transports audiences to a colorful, wondrous world populated by the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant dance in their step and a song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomachs. After the Bergens invade Troll Village, Poppy (Anna Kendrick), the happiest Troll ever born, and the overly-cautious curmudgeonly Branch (Justin Timberlake) set off on a journey to rescue her friends. Together, this mismatched duo embark on a rescue mission full of adventure and mishaps - trying to tolerate each other long enough to get the job done.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (R) Release Date: 11/11

Nineteen-year-old private Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn), along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Based on the novel by Ben Fountain.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (PG-13)

Release Date: 11/18

The year is 1926, and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident, were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

Moana (PG)

Release Date: 11/23 From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

MOVIE R EVIEWS The Ones Below (R) Netflix

Kate (Clémence Poésy) and Justin (Steven Campbell Moore) seem to have it all. A young, successful couple living in a sunny English flat pregnant with their first child, they receive their first promising ultrasound in the opening of the film. Despite happy news, there's a nagging hint of apprehensive dread. They arrive home afterward to find that the downstairs apartment has sold to new owners, but the only clues as to who they are is an ostentatious garden renovation and perfectly-lined shoes outside of their door. Upon meeting the awkwardly effervescent - and extremely pregnant - Teresa (Laura Birn), Kate becomes tentatively fascinated with her somewhat aggressive attempts at a budding friendship. The first double date, however, displays the peculiar relationship between bubbly Teresa and dour, controlling Jon (David Morrissey, The Walking Dead) and the atmosphere hurtles from tense to tragic. Writer/ director David Farr accomplishes The Hand That Rocks the Cradle with a Polanski vibe while maintaining a film that can stand on its own two legs without the references. Somewhat obvious yet entirely absorbing, it's visually stunning and the score alone is enough to make your skin crawl. If you're looking for an intangible form of birth control, this is a must-see.

Amanda Knox (TV-MA) Netflix

One of the most internationally publicized trials of all time, the case of Amanda Knox both captured and enraged people across the world. A young American student studying in the quaint, intellectual Italian city of Perugia was accused of murdering roommate Meredith Kercher with the aid of her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, after they displayed "inappropriate" demeanors upon discovering Kercher's body. Politically desperate to close the case quickly to protect Perugia's safe reputation and pressured by aggressive media, the hammer of the law came down quickly, despite the pleas of innocence by Knox, Sollecito, and a third suspect, Rudy Guede. After two convictions and two acquittals by Italy's highest court, questions still remain. In this chilling documentary by Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn, it's easy to see the role the media played in a hasty witch hunt, but it's almost as simple to see - without an in-depth, behind-the-scenes review of the investigation in its entirety - the plausibility of their guilt. Of course, the personal narrative of Knox throughout the documentary does not prove her to be likeable, but that's the point - lack of evidence and proof beyond reasonable doubt cannot be discounted because the accused doesn't display a certain level of grief or remorse. Then again, the only person who truly knows what happened to Kercher is the ghost of herself. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Preoccupations Preoccupations Jagjaguwar Preoccupations is a band that proudly carries the torch of the dark and brooding bands from the post-punk/no-wave scene of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. That’s not exactly a novel idea; that type of influence has been repeated countless times in recent years. What sets them apart is an ability to not sound derivative. Vocalist/bassist Matt Flegel’s affected Ian Curtis-esque singing on album opener “Anxiety” gave the impression this was going to be just another footnote in the post-punk revival. Luckily, he explores ranges outside the lower end on the rest of the album. On the musical side, drummer Mike Wallace deftly blends digital beats with his regular kit. While there’s plenty of that familiar four-on-the-floor beat so often heard in the genre (especially on “Stimulants”), he isn’t afraid to change it up on songs like “Monotony” and “Memory” with their shuffling, stuttering beat. Guitarists Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen craft weaving, darkly melodic sonic soundscapes that perfectly complement the often brooding vocals. They even manage to avoid the common pitfall of too minimalist or needlessly complex. Preoccupations is modern post-punk done right.

Touché Amoré Stage Four Epitaph On Touché Amoré’s last album, 2013’s Is Survived By, frontman Jeremy Bolm screamed, “It’s hard to write [while] content,” worrying he might not be able to write the same lyrics that his fans expect as he grows less angry. However, he sadly found a new way to relate: the death of his grandmother. That loss spurs his writing on Stage Four, a title obviously symbolic of both being the band’s fourth album and metastatic cancer. TA’s songwriting continues to evolve from the chaotic influences of bands like pg. 99 and Orchid. Swelling, reverb-drenched tremolopicked leads signal an ever-growing influence of post-punk and shoegaze. Guitar tones feel warmer, drummer Elliot Babin largely avoids blast beats (although not completely), and their frontman uses (sparingly) that which is often blasphemous in hardcore punk: clean vocals. Worry not, true believers - they never feel like an ill-informed attempt at commercial viability, more Discharge meets Depeche Mode than formulaic “screamed verses/sung choruses” cliché. Despite being their most accessible album yet, Touché Amoré stay true to the scene that birthed them. The opening track says it best: “It could be worse.” - Jonathan Gluff

Solange A Seat at the Table Columbia Records Beyonce's kid sister has outgrown that title in more ways than one. Solange has never really lived in the shadow of big sis, however. She's always been a writer for others, then a fashion icon, mother, and actress, but has returned to her roots, penning a compilation of funky and lilting yet meaty jams drenched in personal and social commentary. Thematically seamless with silky composition, A Seat at the Table could easily be the best album of 2016. "Rise" is a gentle, jazzy fight song inspiring perseverance through pain. Although the lyrics are simple, they speak volumes - a bittersweet prelude to "Weary," which documents the pure exhaustion of living in today's often cruel society: "Be leery of your place in the world/ you feel like you're chasing the world/ you're leaving not a trace in the world." Interlude commentary from Knowles' parents outlining their personal experiences with racism lend immensely to the power of the lyrics. "Mad" features Lil Wayne in a duet of the dichotomy between allowing yourself to be justified in your anger without losing love and having hope for change. In the wake of the BLM movement, not only is this entire album so relevant and necessary, it's poignancy has been relevant for far too long, and proves that music can still have substance and carry a message while simultaneously being incredibly beautiful and fresh.

Bon Iver 22, A Million Jagjaguwar It's been quite some time since Wisconsin indie folk outfit Bon Iver stole our hearts and flooded the airwaves with "Skinny Love." The raw and touching melancholy of For Emma, Forever Ago carried into their self-titled sophomore album, but 22, A Million is a whole new animal. Their most adventurous endeavor yet, the glimmer of yearning remains, but it's blanketed and swirled around in a glitchy, gritty maelstrom of odd electronic choices. Justin Anderson's vocals are mostly indistinguishable, which is kind of a bummer for me. Currently, most of the original charm of Bon Iver is on vacation. The first track, "22 (OVER S∞∞N)" is mild, eerily gorgeous and anxious at the same time, perhaps softening the listener for "10 dEAThbREasT," which is the first real indicator of a total escape from their original sound. Heavy industrial elements and forceful vocals continue through "715 CREEKS," only to calm down for the existential "33 'God'" and my personal favorite, "29 #Strafford APTS." Stripped down and exposed with fingerpicking and elusively relative lyrics, it feels effortless in comparison to many other songs on the album - "I hold the note you wrote and know you've buried all your/ alimony butterflies." I was hoping for more of that, but even though I want to feel betrayed, I'm actually intrigued and this won't be my final listen. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Andy Jones Sunflower Self-Released

Phantogram Three Universal Records

I don't think it would be inaccurate to say that Andy Jones is the Stephen King of music. It seems like he just walks around and songs fall out of his mouth - after brewing in his heart, of course. They're not just songs, however - they are damn good songs. Lyrically unparalleled, visceral, hasty but sincere, Sunflower revisits live/ previous recordings, covers, new material, and as an added bonus, humble and endearing interactions with his live audience. "Noah Says (Sunflower Melody)" is exactly why I've always said that his music is a lovechild of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Pixies. Of course, he has nailed his own singular sound from a plethora of his influences. Aggressively upbeat despite the subject matter, he alternates between pounding the hell out of his guitar and tickling the strings, screaming and crooning - the perfect purveyance of lost love. One of my all-time favorites, "Christy Was a Painter," graces the album as well - it's a sweet and simple tale of puppy love with whimsical lyrics: "Christy had a way of commanding attention/ She painted the guys she thought were hot/ I wanted my atoms to be disassembled/ put together as a piece of her heart." "Candy," which Jones describes as a Leonard Cohen/ Bob Dylan knockoff, will stick to your brain like superglue, and his version of "Hallelujah" will haunt your dreams. High art at its finest.

Norah Jones

Phantogram emerged during the guy/ girl duo trend of the late ’00s. But three albums and a smattering of EPs later and it’s clear they’re sticking around. The aptly titled Three finds them separating from the pack, albeit with mixed results. Sarah Barthel’s voice and melodies are stronger and catchier than ever. This is likely one of the few upsides of working with outside songwriters this time around. Unfortunately, many songs are less like the indiemeets-trip-hop of past releases and more like generic club “bangers.” Josh Carter’s guitar too often gets buried or replaced by uninspired synths. Sarah’s sister’s suicide earlier this year clearly impacted the band; they’ve all been best friends since junior high. That and the death of two of their admitted influences - Bowie and Prince - inspired lyrics like, “Hurt people hurt people, too” (“Barking Dog”) and “Been up until dawn and all of my heroes are gone” (“Answer”). These and another song about the subject, “Destroyer,” have the fewest writing credits; unsurprisingly, they’re some of the album’s standouts. Something about too many cooks… “More” doesn’t always mean “better.” Three is sometimes too much.

Green Day Revolution Radio Reprise

Day Breaks Blue Note

Grammy magnet Norah Jones just can't seem to make mediocre or displeasing music. As the daughter of a concert producer and sitar player, it's definitely in her blood, but that doesn't change the fact that her voice is like sweet butter and her talent as a multi-instrumentalist didn't develop without hard work. She possesses a classic quality that feels incredibly organic - her inspirations, especially Billie Holiday, are obvious, but she pays excellent tribute, and after her long-lived departure from being pegged as a "jazz singer," she returns (mostly) to what won her all of those awards in the first place. From beginning to end, the album is like being wrapped in a fur coat in front of a blazing fire - almost too hot, but also insanely relaxing, and let's be honest - pretty damn sexy. Not unlike Solange, Jones addresses racial tension and police violence with sincere melancholy. In "Flipside," she speaks to the ongoing issue - "Good things are happening, but happening slow," and that keeping quiet denies the problem - "I can't stand when you tell me to get back/ if we're all free, then why does it seem we can't just be?" It's definitely mood music throughout - as in, you're probably not going to add this to your workout mixtape. It's a wine and cheese cocktail hour listen, but wonderful nonetheless. - Whitney Patterson

Like many kids in the ‘90s, my first exposure to anything resembling punk was Green Day’s Dookie. So it saddens me to see them continue their downward spiral that (in my personal opinion) started even before American Idiot, when they backpedaled on their previous assertion that they’d “matured” too much for punk with the release of the acoustic-driven Warning. So hearing Billie Joe Armstrong sing “All grown up and medicated” on opening track “Somewhere Now” feels an awful lot like history repeating. Many songs feel like something from their catalog or someone else’s. The aforementioned song sounds like something off the cutting room floor of the Nimrod sessions, tired and phoned-in just like parts of that album. “Too Dumb to Die” sounds suspiciously like Warning’s “Fashion Victim,” and“Say Goodbye”shamelessly parrots AFI’s“Miss Murder,”but somehow worse. “Forever Now” and “Still Breathing” suffer from ill-advised tempo changes that kill whatever momentum they were starting to have. Don’t even get me started on “Youngblood,” which approaches Good Charlotte levels of terrible. One of the worst albums I’ve ever heard, and undoubtedly the worst of 2016. - Jonathan Gluff

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS PIPELINE PORTER

Daniel Knight • 4 Pipeline Porter is a richly-colored (almost black) porter brewed with 100% Hawaiian Kona coffee. It generates very little head and leaves only a little lacing on the glass. A whiff tells one almost everything they need to know about this brew. Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and coconut. The taste is nice with one addition that will likely become the deal breaker for or against: that hoppy finish. BTW, the ABV on this brew is 5.4% making it drinkable as a session brew. Paul Bragin • 3 A thick tan head tops this black beer and takes its time evaporating. The smell of roasted malt and coffee fill the nose. The roasted malt and coffee notes continue with the first sip of the beer, and the coffee lingers on the tongue during the finish. This could be a good beer to drink in the morning. Pair it with hearty dishes like soups, stews, or pot roast and mashed potatoes. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This beer has a dark rich color as well as the standard coffee and chocolate flavor. I like the fact that it's made from Hawaiian coffee. I think this is their best beer, but then again I am partial to the darker beers.

TAXMAN DEFALLT

Daniel Knight • 3.5 deFallt is a Bièr de Garde which means “beer to keep." In this case, over the summer for fall release. Its color reminds me of fall with a dark orange brownishness. It’s Taxman’s autumn seasonal. Its nose is very pleasant, speaking loudest with malts and spiciness. Not much going on with hops here. Taxman boasts being smooth and spicy with vanilla notes, blended with cinnamon and wildflower honey. I concur and recommend that you check this one out. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A faint off-white head forms and vanishes when poured into a tulip glass, leaving a deep chestnut colored beer. Spice notes control the nose with the first smell. Malt flavors first come through with a sip of the beer, but the spices return in the finish. This farmhouse ale is only available for a few months in late summer and early fall. Buy some while you can. Pair it with roasted lamb or soft ripened cheeses. Jabez Martinez • 5 This is a hazy amber-colored beer. It has a wheat flavor, but I can also taste some spices and honey. I also like the fact that it's an Indiana beer; but I gave it the 5 star rating because it has a 7% ABV. A beer with a pumped-up ABV and great flavor - you can’t go wrong. I consider this beer in the group of Blue Moon and Shock Top but a lot better.

CARSON'S ALMOST HEAVEN

Daniel Knight • 4 A local brew - I love it. Almost Heaven pours up a dark straw color and sports a frothy head that sticks around a while and leaves some lacing. Its aroma is a light and pleasant citrus hops with light malts. The flavor follows suit with pleasant flavorful hops and subtle maltiness. It’s a session IPA (that spells low ABV), so drink up. Congratulations, Carson’s Almost Heaven is a winner. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick white head crowns this golden India Pale Ale and never completely evaporates. A good mix of citrus and pine notes from the hops round out the scent profile. The first taste of the beer contains a hint of hop flavors, which gain a stronger presence in the long finish. People who usually dislike India Pale Ales might find this one very enjoyable, but serious IPA drinkers will enjoy it also. Pair it with tacos. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 I like the sweet hops that you find in standard IPAs. This one is very smooth and easy to drink - one of the better IPAs that I've had. I also like the fact that it's from Carson’s. They always bring out solid beers.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS BRECKINRIDGE OATMEAL STOUT

and although good, in my opinion, it's somewhat unremarkable. It’s a solid brew, but I couldn’t get excited about it. Paul Bragin • 4.25 A good tan head rests on this black stout. The nose displays a solid scent of roasted malt. The roasted malt flavor continues while drinking the beer, but does not seem overpowering. It also shows hints of coffee and chocolate. The oatmeal used during brewing gives a creamy mouthfeel. Stout and porter fans will definitely want to try this. Pair it with barbecue or other hearty dishes. It can also pair with chocolate or cream based desserts.

Daniel Knight • 3 This oatmeal stout pours up a dark chocolate brown - almost opaque, with an attractive one finger khaki- colored head that doesn't last long. It settles to a thin foam film across the top and doesn't leave any notable lacing. The aroma is subtle with notes of coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. Its flavor follows suit and is quite smooth

Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a deep black-colored beer, and the smell of roasted malts hits immediately. I like the deep coffee flavors with the malts added in. I usually have this beer or the Vanilla Porter in my refrigerator over the winter months.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS PILSNER URQUELL

HENRY'S HARD SODA

Miller Lite Chicken Wings From the Kitchen of Guy Fieri Time: 1 hour 30 mins Yield: serves 4-6 3 lb Chicken Wings Miller Lite Brine 2 12-oz cans of Miller Lite 1/2 cup onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, smashed 2 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp kosher salt 1 tbsp honey 1 bay leaf 1 strip lemon peel 1 tsp black peppercorns 2 cups ice canola oil to fry Prepare the Wings: In a large pot, combine all of the ingredients for the Miller Lite Brine. Bring to a simmer and stir to dissolve salt and sugar. Remove from heat and add ice to cool. Then add chicken wings to a large, resealable plastic bag and pour cooled brine over the top. Close tightly and place the bag in a bowl to prevent any liquid spilling out. Brine the wings in the fridge for 30 minutes. Cook the Chicken Wings: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the chicken wings on a baking sheet and cook in the oven for 35 mins. Remove from the oven, place onto a paper towel-lined baking tray and allow to cool. In a large saucepot or fryer, heat 3 inches of canola oil, or enough to prevent wings from touching the bottom of the pan, to 350 degrees. In batches, add the chicken wings to the oil and cook for about 3 mins or until crispy and golden brown. Remove the chicken wings from the oil and drain on paper towels.

Daniel Knight • 2.75 This is a Czech Pilsner. It pours up an attractive medium straw color with a light bubbly head that quickly fades. There’s a good deal of effervescence in the brew as well. Its aroma is light with biscuity malts and a buttery note. The flavor is light with similar notes to those of the aroma plus a very light hop touch. That butteriness is there too. My main complaint with this beer is that in my opinion, the flavor is too light. Especially on the finish. You may find it perfect to your taste. Paul Bragin • 5 An abundant white head rests on the top of this beer when poured into a pilsner glass. The scent contains a balance of malt and hops expected in a pilsner. Malts seem to highlight the beginning of the tasting process, with hops coming to the foreground in the finish. This is the beer that American lagers try to emulate, but this one will always come out on top. It can be paired with a variety of foods. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a clear yellow beer. It has a sweet pilsner flavor. I can't remember when I last had a Czech beer, but I think this one is pretty good. Another plus is that it's available in a pint can.

Daniel Knight • 2.75 This Hard Cherry Cola is exactly what they say. It’s not a beer or cider. It pours up looking like a cherry cola. Tastes sweet and syrupy like its name sake and is apparently fortified with alcohol. It would probably be desirable to someone who doesn't enjoy beer, wine, cider or most other alcoholic beverages. One has to pay close attention to even notice the alcohol in its flavor. BTW, I’m told that folks love these things. So, you be the judge. Paul Bragin • 3.5 A decent tan head forms, but quickly disappears. The scent contains a lot of sweet cherry presence. The taste seems a little less sweet than regular cherry cola. This is something nice to try, but maybe won’t be in the regular rotation for a serious craft beer aficionado. Feel free to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to a glass of this for a nice dessert. A regular cherry cola might hit the spot better. Jabez Martinez • 5 I gave this a 5 because it tastes exactly like a cherry coke. Sometimes these drinks have a funny taste to them, but this one does not. There's no alcohol taste, but most people will only be able to drink one or two since they are pretty sweet. I really like this beer and will have to try their other flavors.

Please Remember to Drink Responsibly.

NEWS4U | WINE REVIEWS

Walter the Wine Guy Cabernet Sauvignon, King of Wine Grapes (part two): Liquor Locker's resident expert is back with more tasty recommendations

[] 5

GREAT PICKS FOR

NOVEMBER

Last month, Walter the Wine guy offered up a fantastic tutorial on Cabernet Sauvignons. There was so much good info, in fact, that it was necessary to break it all down into two parts. Here's the continuation of "Cabernet Sauvignon, King of Wine Grapes" which covers a few of Walt's higher price point recommendations...

At the upper end of this category is a crowd favorite, Pine Ridge Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. I fell in love with this wine as soon as I tasted it. It runs $54.99, maybe a little more in some places. This wine is great right now, though the bottle I have is going to set for five years. It gives you nice fruit at first taste, the nose is very attractive, and the finish has subtle tannins and a nice oaky touch of vanilla and spice. A true bargain at any price and a must-have for that special dinner for two. A little pricey for a large group, but a great wine for a small dinner party.

My first suggestion is Hilary Goldschmidt Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Price range is $32.99 to $37.99. A single vineyard wine from the Oakville Region of Napa Valley. This wine delivers a bold tannic punch, but it's well-structured. With big flavors of clove, leather and tobacco, it has a bit of black pepper on the finish. I personally would lay this down for five to seven years, or carafe this wine for several hours prior to drinking. By doing this the tannins should soften and the subtle notes of fruit should be coaxed out.

PINE RIDGE NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

It gives you nice fruit at first taste, the nose is very attractive.

The last group is the Cellar Selection wines of this list. These wines are over 100 dollars. The one thing they all have in common is they will get better after a long time in your cellar. These wines truly fall into the “Trust Me” category. Now, believe me they are great today, if treated well, served correctly, and with the right foods. But if you have patience, these wines will HILARY GOLDSCHMIDT reward you with a wonderful experience. OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

A single vineyard wine from the Oakville Region of Napa Valley.

November 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

The first one is Antica Townsend Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This is from St. Michelle Estates and is truly a great wine. It isn’t cheap at $100.99 to $120.99 a bottle. I have a couple bottles of this and I hope to be alive to taste these in 10 to 15 years. Right now it's

NEWS4U | WINE REVIEWS a big wine with a little more aggression than I like, but it has really great flavors and will only get better when it's finished bottle aging. A “must have” if you want to collect wine. You will truly experience a great wine done well if you set this one back for at least seven years.

My last suggestion is≠, one of the best wines made in the world. I have tasted this wine four or five times in my life and I can truly say that it's one of the best wines I have ever tasted. This is from the Shafer Family Vineyards, Stags Leap district in Napa Valley. These grapes grow on a hillside slope on their property. A consistent “Cellar Selection” in major publications and a true prestige wine. It runs $320.99 to $350 a bottle. A wine I covet for my cellar, and is a wine that falls into that “I’m not worthy” list. This wine will get better with age, and I truly believe this wine is designed to buy now, drink later, much later! I would allow this wine to cellar for a minimum of 10 years, and 20 or more would not hurt. A

ANTICA TOWNSEND VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON

It has really great flavors and will only get better when it's finished bottle aging. My next suggestion is the classic from Caymus. Their best effort is Caymus Special Selection. It runs $175 to $210 a bottle. This wine is a blend of the BEST barrels from the Wagner Family vineyards. If the production is not up to their strict quality levels set by the winemaker, Charles Wagner, the wine is bottled in their Caymus Cabernet, and Special Selection is not produced. This is the best of their best! If you want to have one bottle to put into that new wine cave you got as a gift to yourself, this would be the one I would recommend.

CAYMUS SPECIAL SELECTION

“Christmas Gift” idea. Well, I have to say SHAFER looking at this list HILLSIDE (from both October SELECT and November), I One of the really concentrated best wines my suggestions on made in the mostly California world. wines; actually, Napa Valley wines. If any of you saw the movie Bottle Shock, the star of the movie was Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, 1973 vintage, but the Cabernet Sauvignon that also won the Red wine category was Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “SLV," 1973 vintage. They make a damn good cab and have been doing it for quite a long time. California Cabs are pretty good, generally speaking. I enjoy them daily and I don’t think you can go wrong buying a less expensive one. They are more fruit forward and really, that is what most Americans want. If you want some good Cab from other places you really can’t go wrong with Chile or Argentina. Check out what we have in the stores, as we have a really good selection at many price points. Our staff is learning about wine and should be able to steer you in the right way. If not, you can call me at 812-449-6068. If you have a question, please call or if you catch me in the stores, just ask. Hope to see you soon in our new store on First Avenue near North Park. Until next month, Walt
