EDITOR W A QUICK NOTE FROM THE

ave goodbye to summer. It's over. Now we start the slow, painful march towards winter once again - step by heavy step... Oh, I seem to have bypassed fall. Apologies. I just wanted to get a head start on my cold weather complaining. Much more of that later, I promise. Now back to the present and the busy month of October as the community tries to squeeze in a bunch of marquee events before the holiday season swoops in and steals the show. But seriously, there's plenty to do this month. From the Fall Festival to Fiesta Evansville, concerts to haunted houses, your social calendar should fill up right quick. Of course, don't ignore your daily responsibilities or anything - go to work, feed the kids, walk the dog. Just make sure to plan for some scary good times, i.e., the Old Courthouse Catacombs and Historic Newburgh Ghost Walks. No doubt that many of you out there live for Halloween, and the rest of you probably like it very much. So enjoy this special time of year when the darkness of night takes on a more sinister feel than usual - you've earned it! For the true geeks out there, Tri-Con multi-fandom convention is back and nerdier than ever (that's a compliment) - see the preview inside. We've also got an interview with the one and only Melissa Etheridge ahead of her much-anticipated holiday show at the Victory in December. Speaking of the Victory, legendary comedian Gallagher will make a final stop in Evansville this month before retiring. At the Ford Center, catch the return of Florida Georgia Line plus Alabama and the Charlie Daniels Band - AND the venue's first NBA game AND the Evansville Thunderbolts (hockey, anyone?). All that and more in the pages ahead. - TE

MELISSA ETHERIDGE'S

HOLIDAY TRIO

VICTORY THEATRE | DECEMBER 12 @ 7:30PM

"I'm the Only One" singer bringing a mix of seasonal classics, chart hits and fan favorites to Evansville

C

hristmas has come early with the announcement that rock and roll icon Melissa Etheridge is making a stop at the Victory Theatre in December. Known for such rousing tracks as "I'm the Only One," "Bring Me Some Water" and "Come to My Window," the 55-year-old Kansas native remains as committed as ever to giving heart-wrenching, passionate performances that leave her fans happily exhausted. It's no wonder then that she maintains one of the most loyal followings in music. Etheridge's holiday show is geared around her 2008 album, A New Thought for Christmas, including the songs "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Merry Christmas Baby" and "O Night Divine." In addition, she'll play a number of chart hits and fan favorites with a stripped-down approach that promises to be every bit as powerful as her full-band sound.

heart. One of my managers said, 'Well, we have a connection with Stax [record label]' and I said, 'You're kidding - that's it right there.' And then instantly I was intimidated thinking about trying to live up to Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Mavis Staples - you don't get better singers than that. And this is the music that inspired me. You know, when I wrote "I'm the Only One" I wanted it to be on the level of the Otis Redding songs. And so to go back and sing "I've Been Loving You Too Long" - that to me is one of the greatest songs live you could ever do. But I took it on and I decided that if I was going to do it, I would have to immerse myself in Memphis, in the music. I wanted to go there and record with these musicians - go back to the source and understand what was going on. Interestingly enough, times are very similar. There are racial issues and tensions and desires to understand. Stax was the only interracial record company around. It's very timely and I felt very drawn to this project. Everything really lined up for me, and I knew it was something I was supposed to do.

Etheridge kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the show at the Victory. You're currently on tour with Pat Benatar - which sounds like a dream pairing of powerhouse singers. It is so much fun - the fans are losing their minds. I mean, I was a huge admirer of Pat Benatar when I was growing up. I remember getting her first album when I was a senior in high school and just being blown away. I listened to it over and over; I was extremely jealous and just decided that I wanted to rock like that. So to be sharing the stage with her is such a treat for me. It's a full night of rock and roll and the fans just love it. How did your new album MEmphis Rock & Soul - which honors the legendary Stax Records - come about? Well, I wanted to put another album out this year - I released This is M.E. a couple years ago. In discussing things with my management, they mentioned that I've never done a covers album. And I enjoy singing and performing other people's material - but it has to be super-duper special, something straight from my

You released "I'm the Only One" right in the middle of the grunge movement back in '93. Did you have any clue that it would become your biggest hit? I had no idea. I wrote "I'm the Only One" on the back of a bus. My intention was to get back to a song like "Bring Me Some Water" from four or five years before. I could see when I would play that song how much audiences would like it. I've always written my songs for the stage, because I know I'm going to get up and play them in front of people for the rest of my life. I wanted another song to fill out my set list that would really accompany "Bring Me Some Water." So I decided to go back to the blues era - that Muddy Waters beat. And I just came at it like that. I'm just so glad that the world received it with open arms, and I love playing it every night. Everybody sings it at the top of their lungs and it's just amazing. Do you have names for your guitars? Yes, I do. About six years ago I decided that if I'm going to be playing this many nights, I'm going to become a better guitar player, and I want to play more Cont. on pg. 8

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS electric. So, I really started working at it, and I've had some great teachers and people that have really helped me. In the last six years I've amassed quite a collection - I've had to slow down because one can really get out of hand buying guitars. But I've got a few now that I really hold onto and I have named them - it's been quite fun. My Jerry Jones 12-string electric is called "Trouble." My Les Paul Custom 1981 that I love - her name is "Marlene" after Marlene Dietrich. I have a Chet Atkins Country Gentleman that is amazing, and I call her "Cate Blanchett." My Strat is named after my wife now, Linda. I also have two Rock N Roll Relics that were made for me - the same guitar: one with a rosewood neck and one with a maple neck - and I call them "Venus" and "Serena." Do you pay much attention to current music trends or simply stay focused on your own material? I listen to the radio all the time. I love understanding and knowing popular tastes - and not-so-popular tastes. I like hearing the music that people are making, because it's a community that chooses to use music to express themselves. I will always be drawn - no matter what genre - to artists that come from the truth, that are always speaking from their own truth. Like, I'm a huge Beyonce fan. To me, Lemonade is exactly what I'm talking about - that's someone putting their truth together and making art out of it; I love that. You'd be surprised - I listened to Justin Bieber's last album just to hear and understand what is exciting that many people. I'm also a big EDM fan; I'm a big rap fan. I think that J. Cole is great. I love to listen to the poetry and artistry in rap music. The whole force of music that is a reality in our society is extremely important - so I listen to all of it. You always give everything up on stage. What kind of shape are you generally in post-show? I'm fired up for about 45 minutes and then I take a shower and cool down. When it's legal, I'll smoke my smoke and relax. I can go to sleep about two hours after a show. I don't stimulate myself with anything beforehand - I'm stimulated by the audience and actually performing. I'm my own vice. The music is natural - I love it. OLD COURTHOUSE CATACOMBS & HOUSE OF LECTER

4TH & VINE

|

3 2 5 M A I N S T.

On pins and needles: the tri-state's longest running haunted house keeps the surprises coming

F

or over 35 years, the area's young and old alike have been getting the life scared out of them each September and October courtesy of local haunted house expert, Phil Wolter. It all started way back in 1980 with the Phantom Theatre at the State Hospital (which served as the venue up until 1989). Inspiration for the scary scenes inside came from movies and pop culture, including the inaugural run which was based on 1958's horror/sci-fi film, The Blob. By 1990, the annual scarefest had been moved to the Old Jail downtown where the initial "Electric Chair" theme had everyone on the edge of their seat, so to speak. For the last 20 years, however, Wolter has staged the event in the basement of the Old Courthouse at 4th & Vine - a historic building that possesses an eerie quality, perfect for creating a truly spooky atmosphere. Such has been the haunted house's popularity that a second venue just two blocks away - known as the House of Lecter - was added in 2001. The enduring appeal of Wolter's dark vision has made Evansville the sight of not just the tri-state's longest running haunted house but one of the nation's as well. Wolter and his cast of actors and production assistants have broken attendance records the last few years with themes based on classic horror movies ("Body Snatchers" and "Bates Motel") as well as the creepy nature of dolls ("Monster Dolls") and the zombie craze (last year's "Night Walkers"). This year, they're returning to the dolls theme but with an even creepier twist. "Curse of the Voodoo Queen" features a witch of a woman who "uses special potions and mastery of mind control to turn ordinary people into mindless voodoo victims roaming the shadows in the corridors of darkness." Inside, Papa Legba, the gate keeper of the spirit world, waits for you, directing the undead executioners who carry out spells and curses. You've heard of being on pins and needles, right? Well, this time the pins and needles will be IN you!

Tickets are $12 for each haunted house. For more info, visit oldcatacombs. com and follow them on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter.

BLACKBERRY SMOKE VICTORY THEATRE | OCTOBER 27 | 8 P.M. |

Singer Charlie Starr breaks down Like An Arrow, relives the thrill of working with Greg Allman

J

ust a little over a year after Georgia's Blackberry Smoke delivered a fiery set at the Victory Theatre in support of 2015's Holding All the Roses, the guys are back in a big way with a run of headlining dates and a brand new, self-produced album. Like An Arrow, out October 14, sees the Southern rockers calling all the shots for the first time - simply because it felt right. Of course, the uncharacteristically quick turnaround between albums can only mean one thing: it's time to hit the road again. In truth, Blackberry Smoke rarely stops touring, known for playing upwards of 250 shows each year. But now the band has a great new collection of songs to play for their ever-growing fan base. What accounts for Like An Arrow being released so quickly on the heels of Holding All the Roses? You know, we released Holding All the Roses in February of last year, so coming up on the end of the year, I had written a batch of new songs. We had a little time off in January and we weren't really looking to make another album yet - the idea of a new release was just starting to be discussed. But I got together with the guys and we started to rehearse the new songs - and they felt great. So, we were basically like, 'Let's get in the studio and start recording.' The engineer that worked on Holding All the Roses - who was fabulous - was available as well. So, we hadn't even talked about producers at all. But I said, 'Hey, let's just go make a record. If we run into a problem, we'll call a producer. But if not, then we'll just produce our own record.' We were co-producers of the Whippoorwhill album, anyway, so we just applied the knowledge that we'd accumulated making records. I think I've said it before, but we're not trying to create hit singles, so we don't need somebody to tell us that a song is not a hit single - because we

know it's not (laughs). There was no pressure, we didn't get into a hurry. We just made a record and we loved it - and love it still. It's my favorite Blackberry Smoke record right now. Did you notice any difference in the recording process without a producer around - any different vibe? It's not been hard for us to work with producers. We've had a very relaxed experience with them - like Dann Huff, Brendan O'Brien and with Clay Cook and our buddy Matt Mangano - so it's always like a gang of buddies. This time, there was just one less buddy. And if something's not right, everybody knows it - we know when something's not working and we'll stop and address it. Working with a producer is not something that we discourage - obviously it's an extra set of ears and an extra opinion. But in this case it just felt so right with the band producing. When it was finished, I wondered how it would have been different if we had worked with someone, but we'll never know. Was there a particular track that really set the album on its path or was it more a group of songs that just kept building? It really was a group of songs that just kept building. But I think with "Let It Burn" we were all really excited to lay that one down; fast songs are always exciting. We had actually played that one a few times live - the only one of the bunch. So, we already saw some

audience reaction to it. Well, we've actually been playing "Sunrise in Texas" live for years. We actually recorded that one a handful of times over the years - it just never made it to a record. To a lot of our fans, it's been like the "Big Foot." It's quite elusive, but there are sightings once in a while (laughs). But a lot of old school Blackberry Smoke fans will be happy that it's finally on a record. So, can you tell us what songs from Like An Arrow will make it into the live set? I can't tell you that, man (laughs). It's top secret. But we'll pepper them in here and there. I don't know who would be happy if we just played the new album - that might not be a good idea. Or it might be a great idea - who knows. You recently wrapped up a summer tour with Gov't Mule which featured the two bands playing a different encore cover song together each night. Which ones really clicked? We did "Sugaree" - Grateful Dead song. That was fantastic, one of my favorite songs in the universe. Playing Allman Brothers songs with Warren [Haynes] was quite a treat. We did a handful of those. But my favorites were two Tom Waits songs that we covered. We did "Get Behind the Mule" and "Jesus Gonna Be Here." I'm a huge Tom Waits fan as is Warren - that was very self indulgent on our part, I might add. But it was worth it. It was so much fun and so good. In the past you've collaborated with the likes of country legend George Jones and for Like An Arrow, you brought in Southern rock god Greg Allman to sing on "Free on the Wing." Was it difficult to get him into the studio? No, it wasn't and I was surprised. Well, I was surprised that he was available. But we've become friendly with Greg over the years which is very surreal. If you'd told me that when I was 15 I would not have believed you. To ask him to be a part of our record and have him say yes made us unbelievably happy. He came in and just did a wonderful job - his voice is as strong as ever. When we started to record the song, I thought it had such a Macon, Georgia feel to it. It just seemed like it would be a perfect fit for him to sing on it. It ranks right up there with our George Jones collaboration. I count them on the same hand. FOR

KING &

COUNTRY

OWENSBORO CONVENTION CENTER | OCTOBER 22 | 7 P.M.

Australian-born brothers breathing new life into Christian music, focusing on the epic side of things

W

inter Jam festival favorites Joel and Luke Smallbone - better known as for KING & COUNTRY - may only be two albums into their career, but the Nashville-based brothers have already made an indelible mark with critics and fans alike, particularly with a series of striking, cinematic videos that betray a real gift for storytelling. Clips for such affecting songs as "Shoulders," "Ceasefire" and "The Proof of Your Love" show a band thinking big with the creative process. After cementing the success of their 2012 debut album Crave with the rapturously-received follow-up, Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong in 2014, the brothers embarked on their most ambitious project to date: a feature-length film. Two years later, the Smallbones are gearing up to premiere Priceless in theaters across the country on October 14. Starring Joel as a good man who suffers personal loss and makes a desperate, life-altering decision, the movie is ultimately an inspiring tale of redemption. Joel Smallbone kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the show at the Owensboro Convention Center. Your family moved to Nashville when you were still quite young. Coming from Australia, were you at all aware of the incredible musical history of the city? Dad worked in the industry and always had artists and musicians coming through on tours, so I was always connected to music. And once I started getting into my teens, I not only recognized Nashville for what it was, but also really started appreciating the sentiment of Nashville - not only that it's a music town, but it's really a story town. It's really a town about the authenticity of the song, and I've always loved that, and I think that plays into the music that we write as well. You are who you hang with, as they say. What's your experience with the Winter Jam Christian music festival been like over the years? With Winter Jam, there's a charm to it - we've got 10 artists and bands on the tour, so it's like a four or five hour show. And doing 48 shows together - you're

14 |

October 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

in it together, there's a lot of collaboration, seeing each other every day. So there's something really charming about the connectedness of artistry on that tour. Winter Jam is great - but it's a greeting, really. We play for 30 minutes, and if you like what you see, then we'd love to see you again. But that's all it is, and it can only go so far as that first "Good day, mate." But what will happen in Owensboro - and this always blows our minds - is that people will make a decision to purchase a ticket and get dressed up with the sole reason to spend time with us as a band. They come to spend a night experiencing and celebrating and being emotionally impacted - and hopefully inspired and entertained and all the rest of it. That feels like... again, if you were to liken this to a dating relationship - this is the third or fourth date when you really start to get to know someone. The "sophomore slump" has stricken many a band, but you guys knocked it out of the park with your second album. The first experience of making an album was like the classic story - it took five years to make. We were writing and producing and we had time - that's all we had was time. For the second album, we had like a year and half. At that point, we had discovered a lot about who we were musically. And that compression of time allowed us to write very specifically, relationally, socially and spiritually about things that were happening during that time. And I don't know if you've ever had that moment in your work where you're writing an article and you just have too much time - and you'll go back and read a first variation of it and realize that it was actually stronger. We just had our guts and our intuition on that second record. There are things I would have done differently in hindsight, but for the most part, I was really thrilled with the decisions we made. Considering the epic nature of your music and videos, producing a film seems like a logical next step. That's funny to hear you say that. You're the first to say that it makes sense (laughs). But I appreciate you saying that, because I felt like it did as well. You have to sort of go back to understand this point in time. The two things that I did growing up - I loved working with my younger brother on music, and we've been partnering together for over a decade. Then my brother Ben who is

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS just above me, is a filmmaker, and we would always do movies together. So, it was very normal that we were going to present music theatrically - we love the epic side of things. We wanted to always marry the music as best we can to visuals really telling these deep, metaphorical stories. And in this case, we're taking things beyond the song, beyond the video and taking it to the silver screen. The casting for the film is quite interesting - including David Koechner from the Anchorman films and NBC's The Office in a serious role. The David Koechner story was a very interesting one, because when he was first brought to the table by our producer Steve Barnett - who is great and has worked on 300, A Walk to Remember and a host of other films - I sort of had to do a double take. But I love extremes, and I think good art - if you look at a song or a film - good art has these extremes in it. And when you put people - even actors - in opposing situations than they're used to, they respond in unique ways. If you think of Steve Carell in Foxcatcher or Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society - if you look at their careers it didn't really make sense for those roles which were so serious. But that's what I love about David Koechner - everything about this role was unlike anything that he'd done in the past. He's always been a bit crass, and he's being this really noble man in this film, and I love the way he approached it. He's so charming as a result. And of course, you play the leading role. Any reservations heading into production? There were two things at play. My brother Ben and I have a lot of trust in each other, and we'd done short films growing up. And I was able to be involved in two feature films prior to this - a period piece and then a country film in which I played opposite Billy Ray Cyrus - he was my dad in the film. Ben and I had a lot of discussions about my role in Priceless but because of really knowing the character and believing the character from the beginning, we thought that I could do this. It was an experiment for sure and a dangerous task, because the film is riding on my character in a lot of ways. But what was great is that all the other actors really rallied around me. It's a testament to their giftedness as actors. They really put their arms around me and lifted me up. For tickets, visit owensborotickets.com. The OCC is located at 501 W. 2nd St. in Owensboro, KY.

OCTOBER COUNTRY CONCERTS @ The FORD CENTER Contemporary and classic fan favorites lined up for high profile performances Florida Georgia Line "Dig Your Roots Tour" | October 14 / 7 p.m. The last time the bro-country duo of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley played the Ford Center, it was a full house - or more like a madhouse, really. In short, the fans went absolutely nuts. A video shot backstage post-encore showed the guys in awe of what they had just experienced on stage in front of a revved up tri-state crowd. Now Florida Georgia Line is coming back for more insanity in support of Dig Your Roots, the follow-up to 2014's Anything Goes. The new album features the huge number one hit, "H.O.L.Y," and "May We All," an inspiring duet with Tim McGraw. Of course, Hubbard and Kelley won't skimp on their impressive back catalog which includes the best-selling digital country song of all time, "Cruise," along with "Get Your Shine On," "Round Here," "Stay," "This is How We Roll" and "Dirt."

Alabama with The Charlie Daniels Band | October 20 / 7:30 p.m. Florida Georgia Line may be the hot band of the last few years, but Alabama has attained classic status many times over. Formed all the way back in 1969, the group ruled the '80s, racking up countless number one hits - "Love in the First Degree," "Dixieland Delight" and "Song of the South" to name but a few. Their refreshing take on traditional country and Southern rock mixed with elements of gospel and pop struck a chord with fans, many of whom have stayed fiercely loyal through the years. All total, Alabama has sold over 75 million albums and claims upwards of 30 number one albums on the Billboard charts. After reuniting six years ago, the band went on to release 2015's Southern Drawl, their first new collection of songs in over a decade. They continue to put on one of the best live shows in country music. Opener Charlie Daniels Band needs no introduction - "Devil Went Down to Georgia" anyone? TRI-CON 2016

Holiday Inn Evansville Airport October 14-16

The decade of the geeks: Local multi-fandom convention casts bright light on growing subculture

The low-profile comic book conventions of the 70’s and 80’s have now become widely inclusive to any and all who would call themselves a “geek,” and these conventions of the new millennium can be found in every major city. Evansville’s own Tri-Con is a prime example of one of these all-encompassing geek conventions. Tri-Con will be celebrating its second year this fall at the Holiday Inn Evansville Airport. Convention Chair Amy Bartley says she’s pleased with the amount of activities her staff has managed to squeeze into the upcoming weekend. “The last thing you want to find at a convention like ours is bored guests,” she explains, “so we’ve really doubled down on events and activities this year to not only keep people entertained but also to give them several choices at any given time.” Tri-Con 2016 boasts a vendor room, Q&A panels, craft workshops, screenings of local films, a table-top gaming area, a retro arcade, a cosplay competition, foam dart battles, and an area featuring special guests from TV and film. Tri-Con’s Guest of Honor this year is actor Jason Marsden, who many thirty-somethings will recognize from such shows as Full House, Step by Step, and Boy Meets World. These days, Marsden’s work is done in front of a microphone, providing his voice talents to a list of animated shows and video games too long to fit on this page. Guests like Marsden are a big draw to any convention, but what really separates Tri-Con from the local competition is the group of dedicated staff

and hard-working volunteers that make the weekend enjoyable for everyone. “As a vendor, I found the Tri-Con staff and volunteers to be really helpful,” says Jondi Schmitt-Soper. “Anytime we needed help, there was always a member of staff or a volunteer nearby. They helped us carry our stuff in and even offered to help us set up. I never encountered such helpful people at any other convention.” Lauren Brandt, a St. Louis cosplayer who visits dozens of conventions a year, says that Tri-Con made her and her husband feel right at home. “It was a lot like a big family gathering in that everyone was friendly, helpful, and genuinely cared. The staff, patrons, and guests all seemed like a real close-knit bunch. Fast and lasting friendships were made at the previous Tri-Con, and we are excited to come back and see them after a year!” So, if you consider yourself a geek on any level, you owe it to yourself to check out Tri-Con in October. This decade belongs to geeks like you, and you deserve the chance to spend a weekend among them! - Bruce Ripple To purchase tickets or for more info about Tri-Con, visit tri-con.net.

espite all of the heated discourse these days, Americans can agree on one thing: the 2010’s belong to the geeks. Thanks to television, YouTube, and social media, society has embraced the geek subculture and offered it a lofty place among our country's other hobbies and obsessions.

Legendary comedian celebrating 70th birthday with final run of shows, going out in a blaze of melon

T

he man who invented the television stand-up comedy special and the famous watermelon smasher is bringing his Final Tour and his 70th Birthday Bash to Victory Theatre. With 14 Showtime specials, over 4,000 appearances and over 50 years of experience, Gallagher, one of the greatest comedians and prop comics of all time, is guaranteed to entertain the audience from start to finish! Gallagher's signature routine centers around the "Sledge-O-Matic," parodying a corny commercial from several decades ago. The famous bit always leaves everyone in stitches - and the first few rows often bathed in chunks of fruit. It's hilarious and quite delicious, actually. With such a long and enduring career, Gallagher has developed a dedicated fan base and weathered the years when being known as a "prop comic" was sometimes a hindrance. In fact, he elevated the art form to new heights and became one of the biggest stars on the comedy circuit. And now he's giving his loyal following a chance to say a proper goodbye and spend one more gut-busting night together. Opener Artie Fletcher joined the tour a year and a half ago and is one of the entertainment industry’s most talked-about “must-see” performers. No stranger to film and television, commercials, voiceovers, print and live stand-up comedy, Artie is taking the industry and newstalk radio waves by storm. He's been seen on Law and Order, Conan, David Letterman and The Tonight Show and has been touring the comedy scene for over 30 years. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

7 P. M .

Trailblazing local playwright keeps plugging away, bringing heartfelt, inspiring stories to the stage

T

here's nobody quite like Stanley C. Jackson, Sr. in the local arts scene - or nobody braver, more specifically. The gifted playwright has been blazing a theatrical trail for a number of years now, writing and directing three musical productions for the Victory stage along the way. In any major city across the U.S. this might be the norm, but not here not in Evansville. No, it takes guts (or a trust fund) to pursue a passion like this full-time. But despite the struggles involved, both financial and personal, Jackson has loved every minute of it. And now he's ready to unveil his newest production, "Strive! The Musical," a cautionary tale which took the better part of a year to conceive and complete. "The idea was brewing in my head while I was doing [my previous production] "Yet Holding On,"" Jackson explains. "It's about a woman who looks out for girls coming to the city - girls that are naive and don't know what to expect. She tries to keep them from falling into traps like she did when she was young." Set in Anytown, USA during the 1940s, the production incorporates the music of that era - lots of ragtime and jazz (written by Jackson) - as well as the characteristic brownstone buildings to set the scene. The cast was primarily plucked from the University of Evansville talent pool, including the star of the show, Brookelle Bailey, who plays Odessa Burns, the woman who "dedicates her life to helping others avoid the ruthlessness of the streets in her neighborhood." Other significant roles are filled by Shelantea Fisher (Delilah), John Johnson (Buford), Lynne Farmer (Sharmaine), Janay Turner (Rosalyn) and Laciia JaVene Hawes (Sarah). Rehearsals for Jackson's productions, which typically last six to eight weeks, are long and arduous. But no one's complaining - well, not when the night of the performance finally arrives, anyway. "It's stressful, and a lot of cast members don't realize what they're getting into," Jackson says. "But then when it's all over, they want to do it all again." A self-described "class clown" and musician who studied business, Jackson is now putting all of his skills to use for the betterment of our community and culture. But he's had a lot of help. Case in point, the crew for "Strive! The Musical" deserves a lot of the credit for making this latest production such a success, including Music Director Patrick Preston, Stage Manager/ Assistant Director Brittany Rascoe, Set Design/Crew Manager Charles Farmer and Production Manager Dorothy Beh. For tickets, visit ticketmaster.com or call the Ford Center ticket office at (800) 745-3000. For more info, visit sjmproduction.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville. FIESTA EVANSVILLE W E S S E L M A N PA R K | O C TO B E R 9

NOON TO 5:00PM Evansville's annual celebration of diversity has ballooned into a huge community gathering

F

or the third year running, Wesselman Park will host Fiesta Evansville in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15). The event was created by La Campirana Mexican Grill & Juice Bar co-owner Abraham Brown as a way to bring the area's Latino population together. And though it started modestly, Fiesta Evansville now has a big planning committee with help from the mayor's office and various community organizations. In fact, 128 agencies and businesses will be participating on October 9 along with 20 different countries represented at the various cultural booths, showcasing the many colorful aspects of their homelands - and especially their tasty dishes. Last year's Fiesta Evansville drew over 3,000 people. It was such a huge gathering that Mayor Winnecke suggested using the entirety of the park for the 2016 celebration - and that's exactly what Brown intends to do. "We'll have soccer games with different representatives from each country, a volleyball tourney and bicycle races for the kids. We want to make sure we use all the resources that the park has to offer," he says. Of all the new additions to this year's event, Brown is most excited about bringing in a hot air balloon, meant to be both a symbol of, and a fundraiser for, the Latino struggle for higher education. "Part of the theme of the hot air balloon ride is 'Bring Latino education to a higher level.' All proceeds from it will be going 100% to that purpose. Next year we want to fill up the whole place with hot air balloons to make the event more colorful - we'll have rides to the river and back to the park." Wesselman Park is located at 551 N. Boeke Rd. PINTS FOR PARKINSON'S TIN MAN BREWING COMPANY | OCTOBER 28 | 6-9 p.m.

Bottoms up: Enjoy a night out and support local individuals dealing with a debilitating disease

P

arkinson's disease took center stage when actor Michael J. Fox went public with his disorder years ago, however, there are still many of us in the dark regarding its effects. Simply put, PD is a disorder that affects the nerve cells (neurons) in the mid-brain, an area that controls movement. Symptoms such as shaking and tremors generally develop after age 50 and worsen over time, although PD affects an ever-increasing percentage of younger people. Currently, more than one million individuals in the US are living with PD - including 1,100 people in the greater Evansville area. That's more than multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease combined. While there is no cure, the good news is that with proper treatment, including exercise and medications, most people can look forward to many years of productive living after diagnosis. You can help local PD patients and their families by attending this month's Pints for Parkinson's event at Tin Man Brewing Company. $1 per pint sold will be donated to Parkinson's Awareness Support Association of the Tri-State. In addition, Curran-Miller Auction will host an onlineonly auction of merchandise and services donated by area businesses beginning mid-month and ending on October 28 at 9 p.m. 100% of the proceeds raised from the live event and the online auction will remain in the Evansville area to support the community navigating life with Parkinson's and their families. To register for the online auction, visit curranmiller.com. Online auction items will be located at Tin Man and will be available for pickup after the auction closes. Tin Man Brewing Company is located at 1430 W. Franklin St. in Evansville. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • October 2016

A

s the name implies, Cork 'N Cleaver is an Evansville favorite specializing in choice cuts of steak and fine wine, which is just the tip of their tried-and-true menu that really hasn't changed much since they opened in 1974. Located on the east side, just off of Lincoln Avenue, the Cork offers so much more than quality American fare. With nearly every menu item made in-house, including luscious desserts and aged cuts of beef, and an award-winning salad bar with an incredible variety of delicious items, the Cork is an eatery beyond compare. Consistency is the key. "Some people [from out of town] may only get to visit every couple of months, so when they come back, they expect their favorite dish to taste exactly the same as the last time," says GM/owner Steve Bennett. Their daily lunch specials and desserts rotate, and they offer an Early Bird Menu during the first part of dinner from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. During my visit, I started off with the salad bar, with a plethora of fresh vegetables, proteins, cheeses, vermicelli, seafood, crunchy toppings, and a variety of dressings - I chose the house, a sweet and tangy concoction. Warm white and brown bread were also served with fluffy, sweet butter. Next was their Atlantic Salmon baked in blue cheese dressing with steamed asparagus. While I'm not normally a fan of salmon, it was surprisingly good, and the creamy topping was perfect for the fresh, flaky, tender fish. And of course, one cannot leave without tasting what makes them most popular - their steak. The aged, lightly-seasoned New York Strip is a hearty portion, and accompanied with a buttered, sour cream baked potato, is a true American dish. For next time - Cream of Broccoli soup and Sliced Prime and Cheddar. With an intimate ambiance, full bar, and menu priced to match the quality of the dishes, Cork 'N Cleaver is an obvious choice for special occasions. The quiet, cozy environment is perfect for business lunches, dates, anniversaries, and birthdays. As a traditional local goto, it's hard to believe that they were once a chain, but it's easy to see why reservations are recommended - the establishment stays busy because patrons are satisfied and loyal. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Lunch Mon-Fri 11 a.m.-2 p.m./ Dinner Mon-Sat starting at 4 p.m./ Dinner Sun 4 p.m.-8 p.m. For more info, visit evansvillecork.com.

FAT BOY'S PIZZA 10722 HWY 662 | NEWBURGH, IN

Newburgh's new pizza place growing fast, keeping customers happy and hungry for more

S

ituated by Treasures & Pleasures at the Covert exit off I-69, Fat Boy's Pizza may be the new kid on the block, but the restaurant has already gained a sizeable following of local una-style/thin-crust enthusiasts who can't get enough of the crispy goodness topped with FB's perfectly-melted cheese and signature toppings: beef, Italian sausage, pepperoni, ham, bacon, onion, mushrooms, black olives, tomato, green pepper, pineapple and banana peppers. Fat Boy's opened their doors on August 16, and the response was immediate - and nearly overwhelming. However, after fielding comments from customers and doing a little re-tooling of the operation, it's been much smoother sailing for all involved as the restaurant nears its two month anniversary. Unlike some establishments, Fat Boy's welcomes feedback from the public to continually improve its way of doing business, dedicated to keeping customers happy and hungry for more. Keep in mind that the Fat Boy's menu includes much more than their classic thin crust pizzas. They also offer great sandwiches: Stromboli, Tex BBQ, Buffalo Chicken, Fat Boy (Sloppy Joe) and Ham & Cheese plus their popular Strom Nachos. *Fat Boy's is a carry-out only restaurant (just plan on calling about 15 minutes ahead of your desired pick-up time) - no delivery. Be sure to follow them on Facebook for chances to win free food! Hours: Tues-Sat 4 p.m.-9 p.m.

NEWS4U | WESTERN KENTUCKY MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

THE MUSIC - ALYSSA & CHUCK Bittersweet beginning: Sad passing brings together Owensboro's unlikeliest duo, spurs beautiful sounds

"I

'm not saying this just because I play with her, but I think she's got one of the best female voices in the area," says 65-year-old multi-instrumentalist Chuck Flaim, showering his musical partner, Alyssa Roby, with some much-deserved high praise. From the outside, the two seem to make a mismatched duo, but in reality, they're in perfect tune, despite the obvious age difference; the nearly 40-year gap between them is erased by a mutual love for classic era country, blues, folk, rock, R&B, Americana and more. As Flaim explains, "If we like it, we play it - doesn't matter if a woman originally sang it or not." 28-year-old Roby got an early start on her singing career, performing at Goldie's Opryhouse as a small child. Even at such a young age, she could do a mean Loretta Lynn, covering "Coal Miner's Daughter" like a born star. "For a three-year-old to even know the words to a song is one thing," Flaim says, "but to sing it in key is something else. And then to get up in front of people and do it is really something." Roby became a regular at the venue over the years right up until Goldie retired and still features in the annual New Year's Eve reunion shows. Flaim, who's retired now, has a slightly more typical musical background. In the late sixties, his family moved from Cincinnati to Owensboro at the peak of one of rock's most celebrated periods. A junior in high school at the time, he immediately joined a band, falling head over heels in love with the thrill of playing live - a feeling that has stayed with him ever since. But here's what's really interesting, especially if you're a believer in fate. Turns out that the trumpet player in Flaim's teenaged group was none other than Roby's uncle. Well, he eventually became Roby's uncle, more accurately. Strange.

Of course, it's not exactly normal for two musicians so far apart in age to join musical forces, either. And yet, the Alyssa & Chuck partnership happened quite naturally after Roby's grandfather passed away in 2014. It was a bittersweet beginning, perhaps, but clearly meant to be. "I had met Alyssa's mother Marcia through fiddle lessons at the IBMM and we became friends," Flaim explains. "Marcia wanted her daughter to sing at the funeral, and I was asked

NEWS4U | WKY MUSIC SPOTLIGHT if I wouldn't mind playing the guitar. We did a song by Vince Gill called "Go Rest High on that Mountain" and when Alyssa sang that there wasn't a dry eye in the house - it was just so beautiful." Afterwards, many in attendance came up to say that they loved the performance and that the two should consider playing together again. A light bulb went off. Some high profile gigs followed, including Friday After Five and Live on the Banks as well as local wineries and the place where they always seem to go down a storm, Tell City Pour Haus. Still, some of the duo's most memorable shows - and where they came up with their "name" - have been at assisted living facilities and nursing homes in the area. "We went to play a place in Evansville, and we were setting up equipment while the attendants were talking to the residents," Flaim explains. "They were asking them, 'Are you going to stay for the music?' Something just clicked in my head - THE MUSIC. It's a generic name, but it pretty much tells people what we do - no set genre, open to anything." In addition to playing shows with Roby, Flaim goes solo on occasion and has also formed a separate duo that focuses on Celtic/Irish music. However, he was forced to take the whole of September off due to complications stemming from stage 4 tongue and throat cancer. It's been three years since the chemo treatments, but doctors warned Flaim that the radiation could cause problems later on down the line. "Sure enough, it's messed up my salivary glands and blood vessels in and around my mouth," he says. "The dentist said I needed to have nine teeth removed. I'm trying to heal up and get a partial plate back in there." Still, Flaim is looking to get THE MUSIC back out there in the public eye this month with shows scheduled at Rocky Point BBQ & Grille in Cannelton, IN on October 22 and the duo's hotspot, Tell City Pour Haus on October 29. It's clear that he can't wait to get back to performing with Roby. "She's a very personable young lady with a great stage presence, and I'm really happy we're able to do this. We just need some exposure, I think."

International Bluegrass Music Museum Fall Concert Series

REID'S ORCHARD

Benefit concert series continues with five performances scheduled October through December

ApPLE FESTIVAL 2016 OWENSBORO, KY | OC TOBER 15 & 16

Annual fall community event is a family affair in more ways than one

E

stablished in 1873(!!), Reid’s Orchard has been around for generations – a family farm dedicated to bringing the community together. This mission is what ultimately led to the creation of the Apple Festival by current owners Billy and Kathy Reid as they sought a way to gather people from the area to celebrate, educate and provide for one another. In short, the event was born from the idea of giving back and promoting homegrown produce.

H

osted at the Museum in downtown Owensboro, the concert series features nationally recognized acts from all over the United States.

Grammy award winning artist, Tim O'Brien of Hot Rize (Colorado) will treat audience members to a solo performance on October 7, followed by female-led, powerhouse Americana group, The Honeycutters (Asheville, NC) on October 27. Nashville based songwriter and virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, Molly Tuttle is scheduled to perform with her group, the Molly Tuttle Band, on November 10, followed by Blue Mafia (Muncie, IN) on November 18 - a group known for riding the wave between traditional and progressive bluegrass. Rounding out the series on December 9 is the Grammy-nominated and multiple International Bluegrass Music Association award winners, The Boxcars, led by mandolinist Adam Steffey, formerly of Alison Krauss and Union Station. With a capacity of 125, these shows create an intimate atmosphere allowing audience members and artists to connect through the music. All shows will begin at 7:00 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Light food and a cash bar will be available. Money raised from this concert series helps the museum continue efforts to preserve and honor the legacy of bluegrass music including music educational programs, general museum operating expenses, the Video Oral History Project (VOHP) and artifact collection efforts. The IBMM is located at 117 Daviess St. in Owensboro. For more info on artists, the museum or to purchase tickets, visit bluegrassmuseum.org or call 270-9267891.

After checking out other regional festivals, the Reids’ vision for their own event crystallized as they organized crafters, food booths, wagon rides and more. The Apple Festival may have started small, but it’s grown every year. In fact, it’s been named a Top 10 event by the Kentucky Tourism Council and a Top 20 event by the southeast Tourism Society. This annual fall celebration now features 90 handmade craft booths, 20 carnival rides and activities for all age groups, plenty of food booths and live entertainment. The Reids also partner with several Owensboro non-profit organizations to facilitate fundraisers during the two day event. Most importantly, the Apple Festival is a family affair. There’s a playground called “Reidland” where kids can be kids and enjoy the afternoon. This area also includes a petting zoo and horse rides. Reid’s Orchard is located at 4818 State Rt. 144 in Owensboro. For times and more info, visit reidorchard.com.

NEWS4U | WESTERN KENTUCKY COMMUNITY & FAMILY

FINISH THE SENTENCE WITH

LINDSEY JAMES WILLIAMS SINGER | GUITARIST | SONGWRITER Photo by Randy Land

Henderson's Lindsey James Williams has been a major part of the tri-state music scene for years, both as a solo act and as a member of the hugely popular modern rock band wellhello back in the late '90s and early 2000s. Nowadays, you can find him playing just about everywhere, backed by his trusty loop station which fills out his acoustic sound to amazing effect. Lindsey's latest album is Every Reason Happens for a Thing featuring "The Balance" and "Something Sweet." We somehow convinced him to put down his guitar for a few minutes to 'finish' the following sentences.

If I could reunite one band… it would be a coin toss between Pink Floyd and Queen if resurrection is a possibility. But Pink Floyd if I absolutely have to just say one.

it would be The Amphitheater at Pompeii where Pink Floyd performed in '72.

I have an irrational fear of… being far from home. Even the shortest

recent films, I'd have to go with The Babadook. As far as 'classic' horror, I'd say Poltergeist.

trip fills me with anxiety and belly aches. Is there such a thing as a highly functional agoraphobic?

The odds of me becoming the next American Ninja Warrior… are not good. Let’s see… bad knee, bad back, pretty lazy, out of shape (I fantasize about driving a Wal-Mart cart to shop). I think that pretty much sums it up.

The best song I've ever written is… “The Balance” in terms of lyrics. It was a hard song to write and sometimes hard to detach from and perform. But I enjoy performing “Something Sweet” the most because it's a fun groove to loop and jam. Pizza delivery by drone sounds… ideal. Free drone! The conspiracy theory that Katy Perry is, in fact, JonBenét Ramsey… is something I'm not familiar with. But I find it absurd and insulting to the memory of a little lady who met an untimely and tragic end.

If I could perform at any venue in the world… (fear of travel aside)

The greatest horror film of all time… is impossible to say. In terms of

I'll spend Halloween... with my daughter, Tessa, who wants to be a character from Suicide Squad and my lady, Bobbi Jo Marx, who wants to be Deanna Troi to my William Riker. Yeah, we’re nerds. The best show I've played in the tri-state… was the ”wellhello" reunion at Marina Pointe in 2006. I actually found myself tearing up a little on stage, because the reception was so overwhelming.

WITH BILLY EGELER This is it: 2016 racing season coming to a close with a flourish of high-speed competition Well, race fans, it's time for the final "Around the Track" for the 2016 season. I know this will increase the sales of Kleenex, but there isn't anything I can do about it. So dry your eyes, because there are still several races left around the area before Old Man Winter joins forces with Mother Nature! Â This month will see the return of the Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series at Chandler Speedway. The series had two shows at the 3/8 mile dirt oval last season but this season I believe we will see a much better showing. The following night the touring modified series makes their first ever appearance at Tommy Helfrich's beautifully manicured Tri State Speedway. Modifieds will be the highlight of the night's racing card with the make-up event for the Summit Modified Nationals event that was rained out earlier in the season PLUS a complete AMS show. Greater Evansville State will continue producing some killer IHRA bracket racing and some specials mixed in during the month as well. Cedar Ridge Speedway, Kentucky Motor Speedway and Windy Hollow Speedway have races slated to take place at least until the end of the month as well. Check out the web page or Facebook page of each track for detailed information. In September, we lost another member of our extended racing family in a multi-car accident at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, OH during the World 100. Unfortunately, this has been a rough season for motorsports. I would like to ask every race team to take a serious look at your safety equipment on your race machines while you rebuild over the off season. Stop and think about the value of your life and the devastation that can be caused if something happens while you are enjoying your hobby. Everyone wants to go fast and be overly

competitive BUT before spending that money to be faster, spend it on your safety equipment! Seats, driving suits, fire bottles, helmets, gloves, shoes, seat belts, fuel cells just to name a few things should be TOP PRIORITY! If you are not spending money to keep yourself safe, you honestly are not using your brain. Many believe that "nothing like that will happen to me." Trust me, it can. If you are racing without a driving suit because you "can't afford it," keep in mind that a single layer suit can be purchased new for $100. Skip buying that new tire and protect yourself!! Think about your loved ones and friends and quit being an idiot. If you find yourself having racing withdrawal over the winter months... Don't forget the VP Racing Fuel Gateway Nationals taking place in St. Louis, MO in December. Dirt late models and modified inside the Dome to help cure those wintertime blues! In closing, I would personally like to thank each and every person who takes the time to read my monthly submission in N4U. I hope you've enjoyed the race season and my monthly rambling. I'd also like to thank my sponsors, DNJ Auto Parts & Sales and Ted Brown's Quality Paint & Auto Body. The two businesses always back me in my adventures, and I can't thank both of them enough for the continued support. Until next season, have a great off season and remember: Smash the throttle and your mind will follow! ~PEACE~

BELIEVE THE HYPE

APA 8-BALL

WORLD POOL CHAMPIONS Way under the radar: Local sports team makes history with little fanfare, deserves community kudos

W

hile the entire tri-state was cheering Lilly King on to double gold at the summer Olympics, another amazing local sports story was developing far from the headlines. On August 21, eight APA 8-Ball pool players from Evansville known as Believe the Hype were crowned World Champions out in Las Vegas. A brief snippet about it ran on the 10 O'clock news after the team returned home, but otherwise, their incredible accomplishment has been completely overshadowed by the finger-wagging heroics of King, the Otters, the hot weather - you name it. So, what exactly did Believe the Hype accomplish? Oh, they just beat out thousands of teams from as far away as Japan, effectively winning another gold medal for our community. Actually, this humorous group of six guys and two girls walked away with $25,000 in cash and a huge trophy (the latter of which, if all goes well, will end up in a display at the Ford Center). Granted, they compete in a sport that draws little attention beyond trick-shots, but for the love of Pete, let's give this crafty crew some love. Team Captain Brian Payne is, not surprisingly, the most skilled player - a "7" by APA standards, the highest ranking possible. On the not-so-skilled end of things, Jeanna Payne is a "2". The rest of the gang takes up the real estate in between. For instance, Derek Bivens is a "6" and Dan Field, whose previous team claimed third place last year in Vegas, is a "5". Then there's MVP Courtney Truitt. Deemed a "4", she went undefeated during the tournament, a secret weapon of sorts who deserves much of the credit for Believe the Hype's success. Derrick Foronda, James Ruggerio and Devin Watson round out this (mostly) experienced squad. What makes the APA league and, ultimately, the Vegas tournament so interesting, is that the competition resembles more of a chess match than anything. For starters, the combined rankings of the eight players may not exceed "23". Furthermore, player rankings fluctuate based on performance - which means that a team may periodically be forced to change its roster to stay at or under the "23" threshold. As for the matches, they are nothing less than studies in strategic maneuvering - at least for the likes of Believe the Hype. According to Bivens, a lot of the local APA pool players just show up to drink and have some fun (easy to do when the venues are primarily neighborhood bars). That's all well and good, but for the serious-minded teams, it's all about thinking two, three and even four steps ahead, always plotting the best match-ups - which sometimes means sending out a lowerranked player to take on a "7", for example. In a lot of ways, it's similar to the Ryder Cup in golf, often more mental than anything.

68 |

October 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

But back to the tournament. After first securing a trip to Las Vegas by way of outperforming the local APA teams all year long, Believe the Hype headed west for a week of nerve-wracking competition. No less than on three occasions, they were firmly locked in the jaws of defeat, only to somehow wriggle free and eventually make it the Final Four. Talk about pressure - by all accounts, the room was rocking with a huge crowd, the matches live-streamed. And that's where Believe the Hype's experience, especially Field's, made all the difference. After a dramatic victory to get to the championship, the last match was a relative cakewalk in comparison - and even underdog Jeanna got her moment in the sun, nearly undoing a much better player, the cheers echoing throughout the building. Finally, at 10 p.m. that night, Evansville's first APA 8-Ball championship team was crowned. So how did they celebrate? In a cruel twist, most of the players had to make it to the airport an hour later for their flight back home. Ah, well. Somehow that seems appropriate. For more info about the APA, visit poolplayers.com.

PASSAGE Behind the music: Lamasco Bar & Grill's colorful booking agent lives for Indiana bands

T

his is the story of how a freakishly-dedicated Pizza Hut server with a self-described "odd" personality and passion for local music eventually landed his dream job at one of the tri-state's most popular bars. In 1996, Chris Passage moved from Ft. Wayne to Evansville to attend USI as a theater major. Previous to the journey south for advanced education, however, he made a major discovery that literally rocked him to the core: Muncie's The Why Store. "I went, 'Oh my god, this band is from Indiana?' It blew my mind that such good quality music was being made here," Passage says. "I thought you could only hear stuff like that in LA, New York City, Nashville." With a life-affirming wall of sound still ringing in his ears, he set up house on the west side of Evansville and through a roommate, fate again intervened. "Her boyfriend happened to be the door guy at The Office - before it became Hammerheads - on Main Street," Passage explains, "and they had bands five nights a week. One night he couldn't work, and I was like, 'I'll do it!' That's how it all began." What began was a love affair with the local music scene that really ignited when Passage met and befriended local jam band JEB at his new downtown hang-out. The guys were looking to get out on the road for a run of tour dates and emboldened by a number of latenight drinks, the temporary Office door man volunteered to be their

booking agent. "The next day [singer/guitarist] Brock (Stahl) brought me a book of contacts, places they wanted to play," Passage says. "And for about the next 12 or 13 years, I was scheduling their outof-town shows." He wasn't just serving as a booking agent, though. Passage was also serving patrons at the west side Pizza Hut right up until December of last year when the store closed down - a decade and a half of dedication, loyal till the end. "They worked around my frequent, extended trips with JEB, so I busted my ass for them," he says. Suddenly, Passage found himself without a job and no real direction in mind. With money saved up, he decided to just take it easy for a few weeks, maybe longer - which was not his usual MO. He even thought about leaving Evansville but ultimately stayed put. Good thing, because Passage received a life-altering text message in mid-January. It was Amy Word-Smith, owner of Lamasco Bar & Grill, inquiring about his employment plans. The two were very familiar with each other since Passage not only frequented the bar but had also worked lights part-time for shows in the past. Now she was looking for a new booking agent. "Immediately, I was checking for hidden cameras - I couldn't believe it," he says. "The timing was just really uncanny." Passage has been scheduling shows at Lamasco for about nine months now. And while it's been "rewarding," it's also been stressful; however, the biggest pressure simply comes from living up to the bar's reputation for great live music. "Amy did the booking for eight years - did a phenomenal job," he says. "She brought through some of my favorite bands." Staying the course is important - genres such as Americana, bluegrass, funk, rock and soul have consistently performed well - but Passage has broadened the musical scope a bit by branching out into indie rock and bands with electronic elements. He hopes to get a big rap show booked, too. "When you come down to it, it's just music. It's a cliche, but it's just rock and roll."

roduced by Western Kentucky's P.J. Starks, Eric Huskisson and Christopher Bower, Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories picks up right where last year's original film left off albeit with more gore and a lot more star power. The unexpected runaway success of Volumes of Blood - hailed by critics as "the best damn horror anthology of 2015" - gave the trio the clout to draft in some big names for the followup, including Moses Moseley (AMC's The Walking Dead), WWE legend Sir Mo and the musical onetwo punch of Rocky Gray (We Are The Fallen/ Evanescence) and Shane Prather (Sharknado). With seven interwoven tales of terror told on screen by some of the region's most notable horror directors, VOB2 will premiere at the Owensboro Convention Center on October 29. It comes just six months after the DVD/Bluray release of the original VOB through Legless Corpse Films, perfectly-timed for Halloween. Composer Rocky Gray kindly spoke with News4U about his experience scoring music for VOB2 as well as his upcoming projects. How did you become involved with the VOB2 project? I was familiar with the first Volumes of Blood. I actually tried to get on board as composer for that one as well but they already had their music locked in. When I heard they were doing VOB2 I

again submitted an offer to compose music. From there I've gone from scoring one segment and a main theme to doing quite a few segments. It's been fun. Was the process of scoring the film similar to your previous projects like The Barn? For me, scoring film is always a little different. Every director and producer is different and likes their music offered a certain way. With The Barn we had a lot of time we could spend with the music since the release date was so far away. This is not the norm though. Most of the time I get a clip or a fully edited scene and have it completed in a day or so and it gives us some time to tweak it or call it finished. What do you think you added to the film in terms of atmosphere, and how would you compare

the score for VOB2 to your previous scores? What I bring to the film I think is being able to take something that if taken at face value would be kind of silly and have it be taken seriously. The music for VOB2 is a lot more modern and more orchestral-based than some of my previous work. Where does your love of horror films/dark music come from and which films of the genre really stand out for you? I grew up with monster movies in the 70's and 80's and my love affair with them has never ended. My favorites are classics such as The Exorcist, Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm St., The Burning, The Boogeyman, Gates of Hell, Return of the Living Dead and The Fog to name a few. Â Considering your background in scoring horror movies and having played in a few horror-based bands, have you considered writing a script? I actually have recently started production on my own anthology

feature called 10/31/16 that will be out next year. I've had the privilege of working with some amazing film makers over the past year and they've been kind of mentoring me through the process. It's coming along great and I'm super excited to be doing it. Finally, what's on the horizon for you music-wise? Right now I have a fantasy film that I'll be scoring called Imi Stoglin: Rise of the Phoenix. Eric Stanze's In Memory Of should be out next year that I scored. My film 10/31/16 that I'm directing and scoring will be out next year. A movie I'm scoring from the creators of The Barn called Cryptids will be out next year, Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories and The Barn are out this October. I'm always looking for movies to work on so hopefully there will be many more to add to the list. Early Entry/Celebrity Meet & Greet with Moses Moseley & Rocky Gray starts at 6 p.m. General Admission at 7 p.m. Film Starts at 7:30 p.m. Halloween After Party starts immediately following the screening. North side creative agency looking to help revitalize and grow with Jacobsville neighborhood

"It was important for us to relocate to a building where we could house a creative agency - where we could shoot in-house and build a studio," Blackstrap Media head Kevin Chenault explains in response to an inquiry about moving the company from its home (which doubled as his residence) of the last couple years, 1021 Lincoln Avenue, to a corner lot on Maryland Street in the burgeoning Jacobsville neighborhood. The move was prompted by an empty building that quickly became a real possibility for growth. “I saw that there was a limit to how much Blackstrap Media could develop being located in the downstairs of my family home," he says. “Though I loved the Lincoln Avenue location, we were really starting to grow from our first commercial work as a creative agency which began with YMCA and led to an awesome opportunity to work with Penny Lane Coffee House and News4U. I felt like we were picking up enough momentum to move into a larger space.” Chenault is focused on supporting the Jacobsville neighborhood, particularly the North Main and Promise Zone projects. He intends to reach out to other local businesses through the North Side Business Association and work with nonprofits such as Jacobsville Join In to help revitalize the area. Simply put, he wants Blackstrap Media to be a real asset to the community. "I've got a personal connection with the neighborhood, because I grew up over here on Columbia Street," Chenault says. "So from childhood to my teenage years, I have spent a lot of time in the area, and I definitely want it to succeed." "THE BALTHAUS BASEMENT" BY JOHN THURGOOD

NEWS4U | LOCAL WRITER

EVERY VOTE COUNTS

POST GRAD PERSPECTIVE FROM MARISA PATWA “I’m not going to vote.”

We drove out to Vernon Balthaus's farm thinking we would get some basic establishing shots for the interview, mic up the old man and talk for a few hours, with plenty of time left over to drive back to the city and beat the dinner rush at Sportsman's. The only problem was that Mr. Balthaus died halfway through the interview. We should have suspected something was wrong the moment he began over-sharing about his relationship with his dead wife's sister and their weekend trysts in a Corpus Christi timeshare. Before tilting his head back in his chair and meeting his grand oblivion, he uttered the final words: “Don't go in the basement.”

Normally, we would have called the sheriff immediately. We're not bad people. We had nothing to do with Mr. Balthaus's death. For all we knew, it was simply his time. And in a way, we felt honored to have witnessed the last waking breath of such an impressive man. He had been a truly inspiring individual. Even slumped in his chair as he was, we continued to marvel at his endless capacity to captivate. Once it was clear that he was actually dead and that we would never make it back to town in time to beat the dinner rush, we decided to see what was in the basement. We agreed before going down there that we would never speak a word of what we saw to friends, family or the city morgue once we eventually called them. It was Beth's idea to turn on the camera, and later, Mike's idea to compile the footage into a feature length documentary that eventually screened at True/False, Hot Docs and Leipzig. During a Q&A panel for the New York Public Library an audience member asked why we hadn't called an ambulance sooner. Beth paused for a moment and stared at the audience member. She had just gotten her hair cut to look like Louise Brooks. “When you discover a basement filled with taxidermy cats dressed up and displayed in dioramas of classic moments in punk rock history, you can tell me why you didn't immediately reach for the local listing of the county clerk's office.” The audience member cleared her throat for a rebuttal, but Beth edged forward in her seat and said, “A man died that day, show a little respect.” There were no further questions that night.

This is the phrase I’ve been hearing from my friends and family about the presidential election these past few months. “Why?” I desperately ask. “Because I don’t like either candidate,” is the usual I response I get, sometimes with a blasé comment that Donald Trump is an orange racist phony and Hillary Clinton is an untrustworthy old lady who wears too many pantsuits. Therefore, picking between them is like being forced to choose between being buried alive or getting eaten by piranhas. This type of thinking infuriates me because whether or not you like either candidate one of them is going to become our next Commander in Chief. Sorry Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. It especially gets my blood boiling when I hear that millennials are not going to vote because 1) for many, it’s the first time they are eligible to vote and they should exercise their constitutional right to vote - a right that has only been afforded to women for 96 years and black men for 146 years and even then, racist Jim Crow laws made it nearly impossible to register to vote until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 and 2) they are the ones who are going to have to deal with the consequences of their inactions the longest. It's true, that thanks to our 22nd Amendment, a president can only serve up to two terms, but what they do with their time in office can have a lasting effect on the American public. And for people who don’t believe their vote counts, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union this year by a margin of just 4%. Now, the pound has plummeted to an all time 40-year low. The point of our democracy is to be representative and for the people to choose who their leaders are. We’re supposed to be the greatest country on Earth but according to Pew Research Center, we are ranked 31 out of 35 democratic countries in voter turnout. That's downright abysmal. Personally, I think neither candidate is perfect, but I am still going to vote for the person I believe will be the best president and public face of our country out of the two. Will you?

Tri-State Fashion

NEWS4U | FASHION ADVICE

with Gina Mullis, Owner of Amerie

So long, summer: It’s almost time to break out the flannel, leg warmers, and sock hats!

F

all is creeping into the tri-state, and I met with two locals to get an inside look at what is cool in fashion this fall. Jake Snider, a local musician who happens to be very fashion forward, enjoys wearing layers for the cool fall weather. Colors like olive green paired with black and red fill his fall wardrobe. “I don’t really wear anything with a logo on it," Snider says. "If I wear a graphic tee it’s by a visual artist and never really a specific brand." You will see this musical talent making his way around the local scene wearing one of his many pairs of high top Vans. Snider, known as Cas One (a Strange Famous Records artist) in the musical world, is true to his personal style on stage and off. I also had the opportunity to speak with Tracy DeCosta, a young leader in the business world and tri-state local, about her fall style for this year. “I like layering and comfy sweaters," she explains, "and I also like to pair a cute scarf and boots with skinny jeans and a cute top." DeCosta also discussed how easy it is to pair a cute scarf with a solid top and skinny jeans. Rips and tears in your jeans, guys and girls, are back in style, and don’t be afraid to messy-roll them too with your favorite high tops or boots. Gals, don’t be afraid to pair a slouchy sweater with a perfect fit skirt or extender and your favorite boots and boot socks. Guys, button ups of all patterns are in this fall, and go ahead and roll the sleeves up! As always, be sure to shop local for your fall fashion needs! Amerie Positive-Purpose Boutique is located at 10 W. Jennings St. in Newburgh. Follow Amerie on Facebook.

ASK THE PASTOR

THE

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

WRITE STUFF

Should a person who believes in God also believe in ghosts, aliens and other phenomena?

Q:

“Believe” is a strong and powerful word. To “believe” in something is to place one’s trust, reliance, even dependence on another. Trust, reliance - even faith - is something that should be placed in another only after long, thoughtful (and I would add, prayerful) consideration. Ultimately, for people of faith, faith is placed in God first and foremost. Other trust relationships find their place after that. Placing one’s trust, reliance - even faith - in ghosts, aliens, and other unexplained phenomena seems a bit of a stretch. However, part of our nature as temporal human beings is that we seem to be filled with wonder. We are fascinated by the unknown, the unidentified, the mysterious. That kind of fascination is the beginning of discovery. After all, there was a time when everyone thought the earth was flat, which inspired theorizing and discovery. Being filled with wonder, possessing an inquisitive mind, giving one’s energy to discovery seems to be one of our great capacities as human beings. It is a capacity, I believe, that was given to us by God. When we use it to discover what was previously unknown, I believe God delights. Trust, reliance - even faith - is best placed in God. But how much greater is faith filled with wonder. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

United We Stand (Or Sit. Or Kneel. Whichever.) I feel safe in assuming that almost everyone reading this has probably heard the controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick and other athletes. But I don’t want to talk about them, because I frankly don’t care what athletes have to say about politics. Rather, I’d like to address an argument (I hesitate to call this half-baked catchphrase that) that comes up anytime anyone insinuates that America could be improved: “If you don’t like America, then leave.” If you’ve ever said this unironically, you may want to sit for this next revelation: You can criticize a part of America and still love it. Shocking, I know. The phrase is often coupled with, “Well, let’s hear your solution!” A solution isn’t necessary to discuss a problem because it would then cease to be a problem. In fact, the first step in solving a problem is recognizing there is a problem. Which means that we cannot solve a problem without discussing said problem first. Adults should not behave this way. Mature, well-adjusted individuals can use discourse to express how they feel, why they feel that way, and hopefully find a solution or compromise. So who does behave this way? Children. Well, children and adults who lack the ability to have a productive conversation with someone outside their echo chamber. Loving someone or something does not require you to love everything about them/it. You can be unhappy with lots of characteristics of people, places, or things you love. I love my dog, but I hate when she barks like someone is trying to kill us all when my in-laws arrive. I love ice cream, but I hate brain freeze. I love my wife, but I hate when… I mean, I love EVERYTHING about her! (Dodged a bullet there.) It seems the irony of telling people to wholesale accept our country just the way it is continually is lost on those who use this saying. How is it that those who supposedly love America so much have such little understanding of its history? The Founding Fathers declared independence precisely because they were unhappy with the government! If they listened to British loyalists telling them, “If ye do not like the colonies, perhaps ye should leave!” there would be no America today. Looking at it that way, those who point out our problems are sometimes the most patriotic. Without them, how else can we improve our country?

NEWS4U | POLITICS

WORDS

FROM

WHITNEY by Whitney Patterson

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

It's Been a Helluva Ride Thus Far It's strange how the span of a year can feel like eons. So many things can change one's surroundings, habits, attitudes, goals, and outlook. The October 2016 edition marks my 24th News4U issue, and one thing is for sure - my first and second year at the magazine were two totally different animals. Not one time, prior to joining the staff, did I ever think it possible, let alone that I would still be chugging away. Yet despite adversity, loss, a complete life change, allowing myself to become vulnerable again, constantly addressing existential crises, re-learning to love myself... here I am. And honestly, I have no idea where I was going with this except maybe to say that I don't really know what to say. Some wily cat has gotten the tongue of the woman who rarely shuts up. As I look back at past issues, I cringe at myself occasionally. Other times, I feel a sense of empowerment drawn from my own words. I am, after all, only a sentient, meat-coated skeleton. Either way, I hope you guys stay patient and keep reading. Keep going to shows, don't give up on your dreams, support local restaurants and businesses, be kind to one another, forgive yourselves, stand up for what's right, and don't ever doubt for a single second that you're worth something and there are people who love you (and your best lover should always be yourself ). It's been a helluva ride thus far, and I'm ready for whatever curveballs life's going to throw me before my third anniversary. Thanks for reading, even if you disagree. It's completely fine to be wrong, you guys. And before I get too sentimental, stop telling women to smile, Brock Turner should still be in prison, don't ever ask someone what their "real job" is, you're not a food critic, black lives matter, tip your server, stand with the Sioux, and don't vote for Trump. I love you all, but I'll always call you out on your bullshit. It's what friends do. Buckle up, buttercups, and enjoy the ride. I have plenty more brazen opinions and unsolicited advice up my sleeve. Signed, Whitney Patterson, an odd, sarcastic, grateful human being

Can Crouch help GOP hold governor's seat? Better question: Who in the heck is Eric Holcomb? Holcomb, the Republican party’s nominee to become Indiana’s next governor, was selected by a panel of 22 members of the state committee. He's never held an elected office nor has any business experience. How did Holcomb get here? He served as Senator Dan Coats’ Chief of Staff. After Coats announced he would not run for reelection, Holcomb decided to run for that vacated seat. However, he withdrew from the race when it became evident that he couldn't win the primary. But luck was on his side. When the current Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann resigned, Governor Mike Pence chose Holcomb as her replacement. When Pence became Trump’s running mate, the obvious choice for the GOP state committee to replace him was the sitting Lieutenant Governor - Holcomb. Now he might just become Indiana’s Gerald Ford as the “accidental governor.” Like Trump, Holcomb needed to choose someone for his running mate that has been there working in the General Assembly. Enter Evansville’s Suzanne Crouch who worked her way up in elected office to her current position as state auditor. Crouch might save Holcomb and the Republican party from losing the governorship for the first time in 16 years. SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents. ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT: MEET HAZEL, JACKSON, & SKIT Hazel - Hazel is a 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix! She is considered a “pit bull,” which will make it that much harder for her to find a home. Just because of the shape of her head and body, many apartment complexes and homeowners’ insurance companies with outdated policies will say that she isn’t welcome. This makes Hazel sad, but she doesn’t show it! She is a ball of energy who thoroughly enjoys Cardio for Canines every Saturday where she gets to run through Garvin Park. In fact, the same participant requests to run with her almost every weekend! Hazel can be picky about her dog friends sometimes, but has gotten along with several in the past. She is easily over-stimulated and while she enjoys time out on the town, she can appreciate a good snuggle on the couch too. Hazel’s temperament test result was GREEN, which means she can live with kids of any age as long as they are okay with having a big energetic dog. She’s spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on all vaccines, and ready to go home with her forever family TODAY! Jackson -You know that myth that black cats are unlucky? Well… It’s just that. A myth. Black cats are the best cats! Especially this time of year. They can really come in handy. Ever seen Sabrina? Or Hocus Pocus? Star Trek? Coraline? Your new black cat just might save the day! How about Jackson? He’s already neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on his shots. He’s been waiting on a home since May. He’s friendly. He gets along with other cats. And he’s handsome to boot. Adopt this mini-panther just in time for Halloween for only $30! (Yes – VHS does black cat adoptions around Halloween!) Skit - Meet Skit, a male Satin mix rabbit. He’s about a year and a half old, so he has his whole life ahead of him. Skit can be somewhat nervous with strangers, so a household with older kids who know how to handle bunnies is preferred. He can’t wait to find a forever family that will let him live indoors, hop around the house, and share fresh veggies with him. Skit is already neutered, too, which means a lot less territorial spraying and he can live with other rabbits with proper introduction! Skit has waited on a home longer than all the other VHS rabbits. He was surrendered in March due to landlord issues. Take him home TODAY for only $30!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Jessica & Eeyore Jessica Sutherland loves all animals - especially small ones. At home, she has a large fish tank that houses a number of African Cichlids and a rat that she adores. A few months ago, Jessica started thinking about adding a new member to the family; she had the perfect pet in mind. "As a kid, I grew up with rabbits," she says. "I just hadn't seen one that I'd connected with, but I stopped by the VHS recently and something about Eeyore just clicked - we connected." After holding and playing with him, there was no doubt - this was a great match. "We bonded right there," Jessica says. Eeyore was a pet store rabbit whose owners quickly realized that he was more work than they anticipated. But lucky for him, it only took a week to find a new forever home. Now Eeyore's got the run of a nice, comfy home and a backporch where he can get some fresh air. At night, he sleeps in Jessica's daughter's room. It's a pretty sweet arrangement all around for this furry cutey. "He can do whatever his little heart desires - I just love him," Jessica says.

MOVIE R EVIEWS The Darkness (R) Universal Pictures

Although a supernatural film based on Native American mythology is not a fresh idea, The Darkness is allegedly based on actual events, which paired with the casting, was enough enticement to give it a watch. If we've learned anything from prior horror films, if something shiny is in a creepy cave and looks like it hasn't been touched in a long time, you should probably admire and move on, unless you want to unleash some brand of hell. Something wicked this way comes, however, because kids are all Boo Radleys. After a family trip to the Grand Canyon, Peter (Kevin Bacon) and Bronny (Radha Mitchell, Silent Hill) begin experiencing increased tension with one another and their two children, teenaged Stephanie (newcomer Lucy Fry) and autistic Mikey (David Mazouz, Gotham). Things start going bump in the night as old demons and new begin to surface, and the unbelievable becomes reality. Although the story line is a bit old hat, it doesn't negate powerful performances by Mitchell and Mazouz, or the underlying metaphor of being haunted by otherworldly forces versus the human condition. Neither epic nor a waste of time, it's a lesson in respecting nature, understanding that not everything is explainable, and last but not least, don't take what's not yours.

The Silenced (NR) Lotte Entertainment

When her mother dies and her father remarries, sickly teen Shizuko (Bo-Yeong Park) is transferred to a Korean boarding school during the Japanese occupation. Met with an initially inexplicable amount of bullying, she becomes a loner, burdened with both physical and psychological pain. Most of the girls, however, seem to have one thing in common: illnesses that are being treated with different "diets" and "injections" tailored specifically for each student by the friendly yet menacing Headmistress (Ji-won Uhm). Just as Shizuko begins feeling better and gains an ally in classmate Kazue (So-dam Park), some of the girls begin exhibiting strange behavior and start to go missing without explanation. She begins an investigation, concerned for her safety and questioning the true motives behind the school's regimens. Award-winning writer/ director Hae-young Lee utilizes human torment with anxiety and historical fiction to achieve films that are the epitome of everything emotional and sinister that is Korean horror cinema - as if A Little Princess was actually terrifying rather than sad and whimsical. With stunning cinematography despite the mostly dreary, stark backdrops, and with promising performances by the main cast, it's a must-see for horror fans. (Subtitled) - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Teenage Fanclub Here Merge Records While being far from a household name, Teenage Fanclub has spent the last 25+ years developing a very devoted following, particularly among guitar enthusiasts with a penchant for indie rock featuring bright, jangly guitars. And while that may be a niche audience, there’s plenty on Here to indulge them. Luckily, it’s also an album written with enough melodic sensibility to satisfy more casual listeners as well. Like much of their previous output, the songs here juxtapose those chiming clean guitar tones with biting lead lines drenched in distortion so thick it’d make one of their peers from across the pond, Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis, jealous. But it isn’t all guitar geekiness. The band’s trademark lush vocal harmonies (which admittedly owe a lot to The Byrds) will get stuck in even the most jaded listener’s head. Many parts of the album - especially standout track "The Darkest Part of the Night" - recall their 1997 album, Songs From Northern Britain. And while that can lead many a band into a well-worn rut, the band somehow still manages to make it sound fresh and rejuvenated.

Okkervil River Away ATO Records

Glass Animals How To Be A Human Being Caroline Records Four piece Oxford outfit Glass Animals recently released a follow-up to 2014's Zaba, and it's just as good as we all hoped, with singles already surpassing fan fave trip-hop track "Gooey" on the US alternative and rock charts. This is quite a feat considering the band spent most of 2015 touring the globe with sold-out shows, appearing on talk shows and on the lineups of heavy-hitter festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Glastonbury, and more locally, Louisville's Forecastle Festival. The first track, "Life Itself," has shown the most commercial success thus far, sort of a millennial tribute, which isn't surprising since lead singer David Bayley chose to leap into the music industry in lieu of medical school at London's King College. His singular vocals as well as their hip-hop influences shine through on "Youth," a song inspired by a story told to Bayley by a saddened, yet optimistic mother - "Now your life is back to fun/ But you can see that's not for long/ Cause I know you'll feel the ghost/ Of the memory so warm." "Season 2 Episode 3" is everything that made "Gooey" so popular - a bizarre but sexy, beat-heavy ballad. No shock - it's probably the best of all, but there's no denying that this release displays the growth and ingenuity required to keep swimming.

Angel Olsen My Woman Jagjaguwar

2013-2015 were not good years for Will Sheff, mastermind of folk/ indie darlings Okkervil River. His grandfather passed, members from his backing band left, he had some well-documented (and well-said) words against the record industry, and had to deal with the resulting mental break. So it’s no coincidence then that some of the best words to describe their new album, Away, are “tragic” and “fragile.” That’s not necessarily an insult - Will’s wavering voice lends itself to the delicate melodies he crafts.

Asheville, NC folk rock maven Angel Olsen was aptly named and seems to have been cut from the same genetic cloth as every female artist she idolizes. Not quite thirty years old and raised by folks more than old enough to be her grandparents, Angel Olsen possesses an old-soul vibe in both her music and vocals, yet expresses the yearning, struggle, and vulnerability of a woman her age in her lyrics. This is not to say, however, that they're not also equally powerful and insightful. A bit less varnished than Burn Your Fire for No Witness, My Woman doesn't smolder as much as it soars.

The first four tracks are most autobiographical about the aforementioned two years, and with their honesty comes a deceptive simplicity. The remaining five tracks sometimes seem to suffer from overthinking. The arrangements get more dense as the subject matter becomes more abstract; carefully composed orchestral arrangements layered on top of flittering xylophone strikes sometimes feel too mechanical, and the lyrics a tad pretentious.

"Intern" opens with a theatrical note, dripping with a screen-star quality that Lana Del Rey could never touch, synth-loaded and twinkly, flirting with the idea that someone will always hate peaches. Equally wistful and resigned, "Never Be Mine" should see Olsen flanked by pastel back-up singers at a '60s prom, while "Shut Up Kiss Me" is a frighteningly simplistic song of lovers lost but still hanging on by a hysterical thread. Sugary folk gets laced with grungy Nirvana-esque strumming and blanketed vocals on "Give It Up," setting the tone for the remainder of the album. Although "Heart Shaped Face" is my favorite, this collection is no track-skipper. An angel for sure. - Whitney Patterson

It may not live up to the band's previous highwater marks like Black Sheep Boy or The Stage Names, but it's enough to make me hope the title of opening track "Okkervil River R.I.P." doesn't prove to be prophetic. - Jonathan Gluff

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS M.I.A. AIM Interscope Neon queen Mathangi Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A., once commanded attention by producing avant-garde, bassheavy dance jams laced with powerful lyrics and molasses vocals. Always an innovator in concept, sound, and fashion, her loud presence has recently faded to a dull hum. Unable to surmount the popularity and ingenue of Arular and Kala, she still glittered, sneered, and weirded everyone out with Maya and Matangi, but here we are three years later with what is rumored to be her final album - AIM. Inevitably, artists often run out of pavement on the continued road to success, and she seems to acknowledge that with this album. As an avid fan, I'm not going to be too harsh, but honestly, even someone who'd never heard any of her music would probably not think of this collection as stellar. The first release, "Borders," still holds true to her original charm, speaking to both the over-saturation of politics in the media and the ridiculousness that is modern pop culture, while "Visa" and "Platforms" feature her signature sound and punchy rhymes. It's really like panning for gem chips - slightly frustrating and minimally rewarding, but the nuggets still exist. Regardless, what she's done for music paired with her activism and philanthropy make her a legend in my mind. Rest in power.

The Cold Stares The Southern Self-Released

It seems like just yesterday that we checked out The Cold Stares' last EP, Dark Dark Blue, but within an impressive few short months, they're back with another, and The Southern packs the same punch we've grown to love. After playing on the same bill with Cracker at the Lincoln Amphitheatre back in June, the duo of Chris Tapp and Brian Mullins continue to prove that they are no small-town act. Reluctant to fall victim to genrecategorization, they simply describe their sound as "American music," which is simply appropriate. Especially in this endless cacophony of music, their authenticity and diehard allegiance to stay true to their roots speaks volumes. "Friend of Mine" unleashes with a catchy blues hook, full of lyrics without taking away from such a brotherly collaboration between Tapp's vocals/ guitar work and Mullins' spotless percussion, flowing seamlessly into "Child of God," with crunchy distortion rivaling the greats. There's no escaping the religious tone of the album, such as "Cold Black Water," in which Tapp seems to be referencing St. Peter, and "The River" is a stripped-down, eerie tune about infidelity and repercussions with haunting finger-picking... and yet again, here we are still awaiting that full length album. - Whitney Patterson

De La Soul and the Anonymous Nobody A.O.I. Lic De La Soul have earned their place as hip-hop elder statesmen; a discussion about the cultural touchstone the art form has become always includes the trio. Countless rappers tout them as a primary influence. So it’s no surprise that this Kickstarter-funded album sextupled its goal. Judging from the tracklisting, De La Soul clearly have many fans from other genres. Sadly, many guest spots hinder more than help. David Byrne can’t save “Snoopies,” a Frankenstein of two utterly disparate songs, and Justin Hawkins turns “Lord Intended” into a bad Darkness song halfway through. However, Damon Albarn and Snoop Dogg contribute well to their respective tracks. There’s odd alternating between embracing and resenting younger generations. When Dave raps, “Androids read raps off iPhones,” he could be insulting particular younger rappers or all millennials. So when “Trainwreck” and its preceding skit seem to glorify “hookup culture” - for which millennials are oft-reviled - it sends mixed messages. Lyrical content inconsistencies aside, most of the content from DLS proper are solid as always. But while it’s nice to have friends with musical muscle, they need to do the heavy lifting themselves.

Thee Oh Sees A Weird Exits Castleface Musical trends, like history, often repeat themselves; Thee Oh Sees’ evolution perfectly exemplifies this. Originally starting as a raucous garage rock band, they’ve since graduated to full-on fuzzed-out psychedelia. It sounds great on paper, and for half of the album, it doesn’t actually sound bad, either. The band leaves their mark on the brand early on; opener “Dead Man’s Gun” sounds like Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” filtered through Lou Reed (trust me, that’s a good thing), and “Ticklish Warrior” adds the stony spirit of the Palm Desert music scene to the mix. Later on, they do their best Stooges impression with “Gelatinous Cube.” Unfortunately, that’s followed by the first instance of a recurring problem: plodding, aimless instrumentation. “Jammed Entrance” is a garbled mess of atonal synths, “Crawl Out From the Fall Out” fruitlessly drones with or without the hollow vocals, “The Axis” sounds like a church hymn gone horribly awry. Simply put, they’re weirdness just for weirdness’ sake. It’s worth a spin, but not worth springing for the limited edition triplegatefold picture-disc 180 gram Coke-bottle vinyl it’ll inevitably be released on. - Jonathan Gluff Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • October 2016

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS New Holland The Poet

Daniel Knight • 4.5 Saved by the stout! The Poet pours up very dark brown in color with a two finger head that displays exceptional retention and nice lacing. There’s something about the aroma that says it’s dark. There are burnt barley and chocolate notes. The body is smooth, compelling and right where it needs to be. They’re delivering a lot of depth from this beer with an ABV that’s only 5.2%. This is one of the best stouts I’ve experienced. If you’ve had Guinness and at least sort of liked it, then you need to try this one. Paul Bragin • 4.25 A tan head forms on this black beer after pouring it into a traditional English pub glass. The scent contains elements of dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. The roasted malt comes through first in the tasting, followed by notes of coffee and finally chocolate. People who enjoy porters and stouts will definitely want to try this one. Thankfully, it’s available all year. Pair it with mushrooms, hearty beef dishes, soft cheeses or chocolate. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is the usual dark, black-colored beer similar to most Oatmeal Stouts. The roasted malt flavor is nice - standard for this type of stout - and it has a nice finish. Overall, it's a very good oatmeal stout, a little better than similar brews.

Ballast Point Dead Ringer

Daniel Knight • 3 This beer is clear and dark brownish-red in color with a slight amount of carbonation. It pours with a half finger beige-colored head that settles down, leaving a bit of lacing on the surface, a thin ring around the edge, and some lacing. Sweet malt aromas are present in the aroma. The flavor is bready with flavors of yeast and a hearty maltiness. There’s also some sweet caramel and honey there as well. There’s a “more traditional” hops presence there as well. Not true to its genre, but it’s not fairly low key and creates a nice balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready. Not bad. Paul Bragin • 3.5 A thin off-white head tops this beer when poured into a stein, but it disappears rather quickly. The brown beer contains generous malt notes with the initial smell, followed by some hops. The malt remains with the first taste. Some roasted flavors also come forth, in addition to caramel, toffee and hops at the very end. Pair this seasonal with a traditional German dish like bratwurst or serve it with beer cheese. Jabez Martinez • 2.5 This is an amber-colored beer and with the labeling, I thought it was going to be quite interesting. It has a sweet malt flavor for an Oktoberfest but also some other metallic flavor. Although I'm a Ballast Point fan, this is not one of their better beers in my opinion.

Hofbrau Oktoberfest

Daniel Knight • 2.5 This one pours up a light straw color with a nice two finger frothy head that retains a while, settling to a film that stays. There was a little effervescent piece of something in the bottom of the glass still bubbling twenty minutes after it was poured. Yeast I assume. The aroma was grainy, slightly bready pale malt, not at all appealing to me. Skunky. The flavor was pretty bland and uninviting. Not even as entertaining as the aroma. One would think that an Oktoberfest beer brewed in Munich Germany according to the German Purity Law would be an impressive brew indeed. I’m not impressed. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A fast-evaporating white head tops this clear golden beer after pouring it into a stein. A nice combination of hops and malt fill the nose. The beer tastes crisp and light on the tongue. Beer purists will want to try this since it's brewed using the German Purity Law that only allows barley, hops, yeast and water. This is what American lagers should taste like. Pair it with your favorite German cuisine. Jabez Martinez • 3 This is a clear amber beer with a skunky aroma. While drinking this beer all I could think about was how much it tastes like a Lowenbrau, which I really don’t care for. It does have a little sweet malt flavor but it's a little tough to drink for me. I gave it a 3 rating just because it appears to be the Oktoberfest version of a Lowenbrau.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS Goose Island Sofie

enjoyed it so much as this time. Maybe it was the process of tasting and reviewing or maybe this year’s is an exceptional batch. Try it! Paul Bragin • 4.25 A good white head forms on this farmhouse ale in a tulip glass. Pleasant spice notes begin the nose and finish with a hint of orange peel. The spice and orange peel flavors seem to wrestle back and forth during the first tasting of the beer, with a hint of vanilla present in the finish. The complex flavors will delight any craft beer aficionado. Pair it with marinated pork tenderloin or spicy chili.

Daniel Knight • 4.25 Sofie is a variety called a Saison or Farmhouse Ale. They are a complex style; many are very fruity in the aroma and flavor. Google it. It pours an attractive hazy, straw color with one finger of white foam at top. Effervescence is abundant and the head sticks around for a bit. The nose is of lemon and fresh cut grass. Taste is lemon peel, pepper, and vanilla notes. Very dry and tart. Nice. I’ve enjoyed this brew in the past but never

Jabez Martinez • 4.5 I love this beer. It pours a cloudy golden color and has a grapefruit aroma. It's a little sour but also dry at the same time and I really enjoy the orange peel flavor. I haven’t been able to find this one at the store yet but I would rank it as one of my 5 favorite beers. It's complex but sort of simple at the same time - a very good blue moon with a 6.5 % ABV.

Coors Light & St. Jude Hospital Partnership OC TO B E R 1 - N OV E M B E R 1 Teamwork paying off in the search to find a cure for childhood cancer 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of Coors Light's partnership with St. Jude Children's Hospital which has resulted in $83 million being raised to help find a cure for childhood cancer. But they haven't done it alone. No, their charitable efforts wouldn't be possible without the cooperation of Coors Light distributors and participating retailers. Together, everyone works toward a common goal: making a difference in the lives of children stricken with a devastating disease. From October 1 - November 1, consumers can support the cause during the Halloween season by donating at a participating retailer. Tear pad sheets will be on site so those that choose to give money can post their names on the store wall to draw attention to the program and inspire others to donate. It's a win-win for all involved. Last year alone, the Coors Light/St. Jude Partnership raised over $6 million and there's every reason to believe that the Silver Anniversary program can top that number. So during this Halloween season, please remember the kids that are too sick to experience such a fun time of the year. Donate and support the cause! * For every case of Monarch beverages / Miller / Coors sold during the month of October, 5 cents will be donated to St. Jude and 5 cents will be donated locally. For more info on St. Jude Hospital, visit stjude. org.

Daniel Knight • 3.5 Big Eddy pours a deep brownish amber with an adequate amount of effervescence. There’s a finger of off white head that settles into a thin patch. The aroma contains caramelized malts, lager yeast, fruit and a touch of hops. The taste presents a toasty and sweet malt forward aroma and a hint of caramel, biscuit, and grains. There’s an intriguing tartness. There’s barley malt, caramel, toffee, grains, biscuit, cracker, yeast and hops as well. I enjoyed this ale a lot. Paul Bragin • 4 An almost invisible head rests on this beer upon pouring in a stein. The copper-colored lager contains a healthy dose of malt scents. Malt flavors continue after the first sip of the beer, followed by a hint of hops, with the malt flavors coming back again in the long finish. This seasonal offering won’t be around for long, so be sure to get a bottle of it while you can. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is an orange-colored beer. I like the spicy flavors, especially since they're not too overbearing. I also like the 8.5% ABV. It has a little bit of an alcohol taste but not too much. I also like that it's from Leinenkugel - the best Oktoberfest I have had this year.

Daniel Knight • 2.75 Blue Moon Harvest pours up perfectly clear, the color of strong black tea. There’s a quickto-fade two finger head and essentially no remaining effervescence. The aroma is mostly malts with some spices. The flavor has malts, clove and nutmeg. I don’t detect any actual pumpkin taste. The taste isn’t bad. It has some depth and there’s a kiss of hops on the finish. I’m not easily impressed by pumpkin ales. Judge for yourself. Paul Bragin • 3.75 A substantial off-white head crowns this beer and stays for a long time. The scent of this deep amber beer contains a good mix of malt and pumpkin notes. The malt flavors take the forefront while drinking, with a little pumpkin flavor present in the finish. Unlike many seasonal pumpkin ales, this one manages to keep the pumpkin in the background. Pair it with beef dishes and thick, hearty soups during the cooler autumn months. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is an amber-colored beer. I actually already had this in my fridge at home before being given one to review. It has the light all-spice flavors - pretty decent. It's as good as some of the other pumpkins out there, a pretty solid one as pumpkin beers go.

TAP TALK

WITH JOHN GREENWELL | OWNER OF BEEF 'O' BRADY'S

It's Halloween time and that means that beer starts to get a little spooky and dark. In other words, it's stout season. For those that have always wondered what a stout truly is, let me explain. Stouts can come in different styles such as a porter, milk stout, dry or Irish, chocolate, oatmeal or an imperial and are typically made with roasted malts, roasted barley, coffee beans and chocolate giving them that dark and thicker appearance and flavor. People sometimes say to me, “I don’t like dark beer," but if you really look at the flavor profiles you will see that not all dark beer is made the same. Most stout beers are much smoother and more flavorful than your average pilsner or ale. Admittedly, they do take some getting used to, but if you look around and find what flavors you enjoy then you should have no problem finding a stout beer that can truly satisfy your palate. Do you wait in line every day at your favorite coffee house for a latte or mocha? Then stouts are for you. Here are some of our favorites. Left Hand Milk Stout is very popular with our stout drinkers at Beef’s. We sell a lot of it. Roasted malts and coffee make up the foundation of this sweet stout. By using milk sugar it gives the impression of a sweet, yet creamy coffee.

roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that goes forever. For those that wonder what kind of food goes well with stout beer, I recommend a full flavor profile such as a prime rib sandwich or roast beef. When you come to Beef’s, try any of our stouts with a Watterson sandwich. A stout beer along with the roast beef on rye bread is the perfect combination that will leave you wanting more. Have a happy Halloween and be safe.

Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout is a full-bodied stout with plenty of roast flavor as well as hints of molasses and chocolate. Ridiculous amounts of black and caramel malts make this stout smooth, creamy, and utterly opaque. This is one of our favorites and we try to keep it in stock all winter long. Founders Breakfast Stout is the coffee lover’s consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and two types of coffee, this stout has an intense fresh-

Walter the Wine Guy Cabernet Sauvignon, King of Wine Grapes (part one): Liquor Locker's resident expert has suggestions and price points to consider

[] 4

If Chardonnay is considered the Queen of Wine Grapes, then Cabernet Sauvignon is certainly the King! It can be one of the MOST expensive wines made from any country where it is grown. From its origins GREAT PICKS in France, this grape has been taken all FOR over the world. From South Africa to California, from Australia to Argentina and all points in between, this grape has been in different styles and different approaches, but it is always a great wine and now that the weather is cooling off, thank god, this is a wine we should be drinking with food, or just as an enjoyable sip before or after meals. As a matter of fact, this is one wine I try to enjoy always!

This grape is considered one of the Noble grapes from the Bordeaux Region of France. It is, legend has it, a grape that was made by crossing the Sauvignon Blanc grape with Cabernet Franc. The result is a grape that has so much more depth of flavor than the Cabernet Franc grape. The grape is now the backbone of the Bordeaux red wines. If it is the majority ingredient, it serves as the primary flavor of the wine. In wine geek terms, this is considered a “Left Bank”

Bordeaux. When a wine is “Right Bank” Bordeaux, it is considered a wine that is majority Merlot. Since we are on the topic of Bordeaux, the Noble grapes from the Bordeaux are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. These grapes are blended to make a wine that is distinct, and consistent from vintage to vintage and to facilitate its ability to age. Just as an example, I recently had a bottle of 1997 Opus One, a wine from the Mondavi and Rothchild Napa vineyards. It wasn’t cheap, but truly a wonderful wine and a great experience. I have a few Cabernet Sauvignons in my own cellar that I will be sitting on for 10 to 20 years to finish the aging process. Now, some of you don’t have the time or the cash to buy a Cabernet Sauvignon worthy of the effort to bottle age so I am going to start with suggestions for Cabs that you can drink now. They will be at different price points so if you are on a budget, there will be some that work for you and if you have a few dollars burning a hole in your pocket, there are some that will qualify for that investment you could be PROUD of! First, drink now, under 20 bucks. My first suggestion would be Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. It ranges from $9.99 to $14.99 and is from North Coast California. The flavors are bright, with smooth berry notes and a wonderful finish. The tannins are light to none and an enjoyable drink. This is one that you can drink with food or just drink. The next one is Peter Lehmann Barossa “Portrait” Cabernet Sauvignon. It ranges from $13.99 to $15.99. This wine is quite big for the price and truly over-delivers for the money. I do love wines from Australia, they are a relative bargain and are wonderful with food. If you are sensitive to tannins, you might want to open this wine early and let it breath for a

The finish is long and it lingers wonderfully. I love to have this wine with a bold cheese, and it would work great with a nice cigar. As a matter of fact, the best pairing for this wine is a GLASS!

At the upper end of this price point I recommend Force of Nature Cabernet Sauvignon. It is from Paso Robles, CA and is just a great wine for the money. It runs from $19.99 to $24.99. It drinks well with nice berry and black currant flavors with a slight hint of spice on the finish. This would be a best buy at twice the price. Serve this with red meat or strong cheeses. Next is the 20 to 50 dollars. In this category there are quite a few gems and I will only mention a few. At the lower end of this price point, I recommend Napa Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It runs $24.99 to $27.99 a
