NEWS4U OCTOBER 2017 | EDITOR'S CORNER

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

W

ell, did you miss me? Did you even notice I was gone? That's ok, most people skip the editor's page and head right for the good stuff - it's just human nature. Anyhow, there was so much going on in the tri-state over the last five months or so that space in the magazine fast became a hot commodity. Therefore, I humbly stepped aside to free up some more real estate. The fact that I had 250 less words to write every month really played no part in my decision. Or did it...? (Any Dateline/Keith Morrison fans out there?) Now on to October... It's time once again for haunted house expert Phil Wolter and his scare-crew to make you pee your pants (figuratively speaking, we certainly hope) at the Olde Courthouse Catacombs

and House of Lecter in downtown Evansville. This year's harrowing theme involves a mash-up of Stranger Things and Game of Thrones - two of the best and creepiest shows on television. At least that's what I've heard. My parents won't let me watch them. Come on, admit it, you missed that clever editorial humor. No? I appreciate your honesty. October also brings the opening home game for the Evansville Thunderbolts at the Ford Center, so dig that gigantic foam finger out of the back of your closet and get ready for some ice hockey! In other exciting news, some of music's biggest artists are headed this way, including country stars Jason Aldean, Gary Allan and Josh Turner, classic rockers

F

or many years now, downtown Evansville has been the scene of some seriously gruesome sights around Halloween time thanks to local haunted house expert, Phil Wolter. The creator of the Oldé Courthouse Catacombs & House of Lecter knows how to scare the living daylights out of you, plain and simple. But it's all in good fun, of course.

JUST KEEP RUNNING: THE NATION'S SCARIEST HAUNTED HOUSES ARE BACK TO CREEP EVERYONE OUT!

It all started way back in 1980 with the Phantom Theatre at the State Hospital. After a decade of spookiness, Wolter shifted the venue to the Old Jail in downtown Evansville; by the mid 90s, the haunted house had found its permanent home at the Oldé Courthouse Catacombs, a truly creepy place even without the special effects. By the early 2000s, a second venue downtown, the House of Lecter, had been added for maximum horror double the scares. Each year, Wolter comes up with new ways to grip you with terror, often drawing inspiration from popular culture. He's done it again this Halloween season with The Upside Down, a haunted house based on the acclaimed Netflix series Stranger Things that incorporates elements of everyone's favorite HBO show,

Game of Thrones. As the ominous teaser on the Catacombs website declares, "A hidden portal deep within the decrepit chambers leads to an alternate dimension of frozen time and space... monstrous Demorgorgons and the Night King Walkers have awakened!" In other words, don't look back - just keep running!!! With over 1100 productions under his belt, Wolter and his crew of scare masters will keep you guessing at every turn with gory surprises and heart-pounding twists - a frighteningly good time for all ages. That is, if you dare to enter The Upside Down! Tickets are $15 or you can get a combo ticket for just $20 which grants access to both haunted houses - as many trips through as you can handle!

AARON LEWIS & BLACKBERRY SMOKE "Sinners & Sanctified" Tour OLD NATIONAL EVENTS PLAZA | NOVEMBER 4 | 7:30 P.M.

Two country music giants joining forces for coheadlining run of shows this fall

W

ith so much talk about "authentic" music these days, it's about time that two of the most real acts out there combined for a much-anticipated bill. Together, Staind frontman Aaron Lewis and Georgia's Blackberry Smoke make for formidable co-headliners as they embark on a run of shows this fall - the "Sinners & Sanctified" Tour. Known for such hits as "It's Been Awhile," "Outside" and "So Far Away" with Staind, Lewis returned to his country roots in 2011, releasing the debut solo EP Town Line and lead single "Country Boy" featuring Charlie Daniels, George Jones and Chris Young. Both were met with critical acclaim and set the stage for 2012's full-length solo release, the primarily self-penned The Road, which charted inside the top ten and eventually sold over 200,000 copies. Four more years passed before Lewis returned with 2016's Sinner which was preceded by "That Ain't Country," a traditional-sounding single that helped propel the album to the number one spot. One of the hardest working bands in music today, Blackberry Smoke, led by singer/guitarist Charlie Starr, plays upwards of 250 shows a year. The Atlanta quintet has been a fixture in the tri-state over the last few years and returns in support of 2016's Like An Arrow, a former number one album on the country charts (number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100). Combining the Southern rock feel of Tom Petty with a little country grit and hard rock thrown in for good measure, Blackberry Smoke has created a sound all their own and attracted a very loyal fan base with many followers tracking the group from city to city. Quite simply, they're one of the best live acts in the business. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com or call 812-435-5770. The ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

A QUICK Q & A WITH HERE COME THE MUMMIES The undisputed monsters of funk, Here Come The Mummies continue to win new fans everywhere they go with a relentless live show that defies belief especially considering that all eight members were once carefully preserved inside Egyptian tombs. Some 5,000 years later, the band is absolutely killing it on stage, proving that you're never too old to rock. Never. What makes the Mummies such a musical force of nature? Well, imagine the impossibly deep grooves of George Clinton mixed with the intoxicating soul of Earth, Wind & Fire. Now throw in the sex appeal of, say, Denzel Washington. Understand? It's no wonder that the band is a favorite here in the tri-state. Typically, HCTM have funkified our area around Halloween time, but it looks like we'll have to wait until February when the Friction Tour finally reaches the Victory Theatre. In the meantime, check out this quick Q&A with Mummy Cass and Midnight, two of the band's most amusing members. It's often said that a band "comes to life" on stage. In your case, that's a literal statement as all eight members are, in fact, decaying Egyptian mummies. What's it like to be resurrected night after night? Does it ever get tiring? Mummy Cass: Baby, it’s glorious. It feels great! Admittedly, there is a lot of muscle stiffness,

because we basically have human-jerky on our decrepit bones, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Midnight: I notice a certain stiffness as well. The Mummies are known for bringing the funk in a serious way, inspiring even the most rhythm-challenged audience members to get into the groove. What's the view like from the stage? Mummy Cass: It’s a humanity bath, baby. All kinds of folks. Young, old, weird, weirder, of every color, creed, and shape. And everybody’s welcome at our party! Midnight: We like to whip ‘em all into a frenzy. Clap on 2 and 4, y’all! The ladies clearly love everything about HCTM. What advice do you have for the regular Joes out there - guys who haven't been dead for 5,000 years - struggling to make a connection with the opposite sex?

"Young, old, weird, weirder, of every color, creed, and shape. And everybody’s welcome at our party!"

Mummy Cass: Just be yourself, unless you can be someone else. Y’know? Learn to play an instrument. But not keys. You’re last in line if you play keys. Midnight: Clarinet is actually last. Or maybe piccolo. There’s a reason I play sax, and sing, and play percussion, and do the talk box, dig? Finally... Halloween is almost upon us, always a great day for HCTM. Does the band feel a particular energy on the 31st - do you suddenly feel like 2,000-year-olds again? Mummy Cass: We love it, but sorta like orange juice, we’re not just for breakfast anymore. That said, Halloween does have a peculiar spirit we dig. Midnight: It’s the candy corn. He likes the candy corn. Mummy Cass: Yeah. I guess that’s true.

EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS:

WICKED DIVAS

Nicole Parker

victory theatre | OCTOBER 29 | 4 P.M.

Broadway star and former MADtv cast member Nicole Parker on not really being a diva, working with Martin Short, keeping a straight face and more

E

very year around Halloween, things tend to get a little spooky with the tristate's best orchestra. This holiday, however, the more accurate description is wicked. And that's because Elphaba (Nicole Parker) and Glinda (Alli Mauzey) from the Broadway production of Wicked are joining Maestro Savia and the EPO for an afternoon of diva showstoppers on October 29. These two phenomenally talented - and very funny women will take you on a musical journey that encompasses everything from opera to pop as well as favorites from Gypsy, Ragtime, Titanic, Carmen and, of course, Wicked. And word has it that impressions of some of the pair's favorite divas are in the works, too. That's according to Parker, a former MADtv cast member whose hilarious takes on Ellen DeGeneres, Britney Spears, Nancy Grace and even one-hit wonder James Blunt, were always a highlight of the long-running sketch-comedy show. How did you and Alli cross paths? We met doing the show [Wicked]. After a couple weeks I was in her dressing room one day and at that point we hadn't even discussed where we were from. There was a bag of sand on her shelf, and I was like, 'what's that?' And she said, 'oh, it's just sand from my favorite beach at home - Newport Beach.' We learned that we literally grew up 15 minutes from each other in California. What's really crazy is that there are about six actresses that grew up in Orange County, California that are either Glindas or Elphabas. It's crazy. Will you be going green as Elphaba for this

18 |

performance? I will not be going green for this show unless I eat something poorly. It's going to be fun for me to sing with a full orchestra in a nice gown when I haven't run around for an hour and a half - and I don't have to hold a broom and be 20 feet in the air. I'll get to appreciate different aspects of the songs since I won't be so busy being green and flying. And your pre-show prep time will definitely be shorter. Yes, but I mean, look. As the years go by, the prep time extends and increases - but we do our best. It's a lot of smoke and mirrors (laughs). A diva has to live up to the name. So you do consider yourself a diva? 100% not really. Only if I get to make fun of divas. If that makes any sense. That's kind of our joke - we'll sing the divas but try not to be divas. "Diva" has such a poor connotation these days which is kind of a shame. You know, Alli and I have been friends for a very long time, and we like to show that we support each other and that we're both awesome - and that "diva" can be a positive term. Empowering not belittling. Was becoming a MADtv cast member a dream job for you? It was not expected. I grew up falling in love with British comedy like Faulty Towers and comedians like Gilda Radner - but equally I was in love with Sondheim and everything

October 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

musical theater. So I was never able to decide between the two and that is why I've always sought out odd jobs that kind of let me do all of that. If you look back at MADtv, I sang as much as I possibly could on that show - did music videos, I did Britney, I did Celine. When comedy and music can go hand in hand like these Wicked Divas concerts, for example, it's a perfect combination of everything that I love. Did you leave MADtv to go play Elphaba on Broadway? Was that what sparked your departure from the show? No, it was actually a very crazy turn of events. I auditioned while I still had about seven episodes left to do. I had done another show on Broadway with Martin Short called Fame Becomes Me - the best time of my life. It was like going to preschool for a living - insanely fun. Then I had to split my time between MADtv and Broadway. It was just coincidence that there was a Wicked send-up in the Martin Short show - and the man who cast Wicked saw me in that and said, 'you should do the real thing.' And I was like, 'haha, no - that's crazy.' That's kind of how that came about. I owe Marty Short for Wicked, honestly. Somehow, you always kept a straight face in your MADtv sketches, despite playing

alongside such comedy greats as Jordan Peele? How? It's an interesting thing - it's sort of a badge of honor in the comedy world to not break character but to also make someone else break. There were some tough cookies on the show like Michael McDonald. So when you first get onto a show like that, it's like the hazing of a rookie - let's see if we can break her. I'm a competitive person that's always been known for not breaking. I was very proud of this one scene where Jordan tried so hard, but I just wouldn't break - it's just concentration, really. Deep breathing. But at the same time, over the years, you come to realize that that's what an audience loves - when you break character. There were two times on MADtv where I just couldn't help myself. In one scene, an actual pig was part of the skit. And she decided to relieve herself right in the middle of the scene in front of a live audience. It's literally one of the hardest times I've ever laughed. I physically could not control myself. Was there competition between Saturday Night Live and MADtv were you keeping tabs on each other? First of all, what you have to understand is that we were all friends. There were a bunch of us that were together at Boom Chicago which was a theater in Amsterdam and a bunch of us went to one show and a bunch of us went to the other. So we never thought in terms of rivalry - it was more like, 'hey, I wonder what they're going to do on SNL this weekend - what are we going to do?' We'd see each other at improv festivals, etc. So, that's what's weird - there wasn't really an us vs. them . Perhaps the powersthat-be at MADtv would make us feel that way, but I never saw us as the same animal. We were two separate entities and anyway, how can you can compete with a legendary mainstay? We were a show for the younger kids, and that's why now I meet kids in their twenties and we were their show and Alli Mauzey that's kind of cool.

I

t's hockey time in the tristate, folks. The opening home game of the 20172018 Evansville Thunderbolts campaign is just a few weeks away and the excitement amongst area fans is reaching a fever pitch. Ready to improve on the team's inaugural season in the SPHL, Head Coach Jeff Pyle is welcoming back several players with valuable experience in the league - guys who are returning stronger and most definitely smarter. Plus, former Icemen squad member - and fan favorite - Dylan Clarke is back in the fold after two seasons in the ECHL with the Rapid City Rush and Indy Fuel and a stint as the

coach of the Jr. Thunderbolts. He's taking on a much talkedabout new role, a player/coach scenario that should benefit the team in a number of ways. It all adds up to the prospect of some very exciting games at the Ford Center over the next several months - so be sure to get your tickets now! The Thunderbolts take to the ice on October 21 against Peoria. Clarke kindly spoke to News 4U ahead of the opening home game. Where are you in your preparation for returning to the ice after a season on the sidelines as coach of the Jr. Thunderbolts? You know, it's a process - I'm not fully prepared yet. I don't think I'll be prepared until I actually get suited up with the guys in training camp. Once we start playing I think I'll start getting more into shape and be game-ready.

The process is definitely taking a lot longer than I thought it would take - both physically and mentally. It's kind of taking a toll, to be honest (laughs). It's a different mindset once you think you're done playing and then when you come back, it's a whole new beast. Have you had a chance to interact with the team in your new role as player/coach? Last year I actually worked with them half-way through the year, because there were times when Coach Pyle wasn't able to be

"It's kind of taking a toll, to be honest (laughs). It's a different mindset once you think you're done playing and then when you come back, it's a whole new beast."

"Yes, I'm looking forward to working under Coach Pyle and taking as much information from him as I can - he's been around for years and years coaching on the east coast and at different levels, so he's definitely a great person to learn from." in town, so I took over for the week and worked with those guys during their practices and helped them develop a little bit. I have a lot of experience with where they're trying to get to - to the next level. I think that's going to be beneficial for them and myself going forward. So I think a lot of the guys will understand it and I'm going to help them out as much as they're going to help me.

Do you expect to be a starter on the squad when the season starts or is it too soon to say? Again, it's going to be a process, but I'm going to work my tail off in order to get better and be the best player I can be. Whether that role is first line or third line, it really doesn't matter. Especially at this level - any player can take over any game. You never know when someone is

going to get injured and someone has to step up, roles change. That's why it's so important that everyone is at the same level. Ultimately, are you looking to be a full-time coach down the road? Yes, I'm looking forward to working under Coach Pyle and taking as much information from him as I can - he's been around for years and years coaching on the east coast and at different levels, so he's definitely a great person to learn from and to help my develop my career as well. I think that's the plan for me - I can't see myself playing for too many more years. But I got this opportunity and I couldn't turn it down.

L.D. BROWN AGRICULTURAL EXPO | OCTOBER 18 | 4:30PM & 7:30PM

Award-winning ringmaster Brian LaPalme on being a "big cheerleader," the show's amazing acts and more

W

ith the closing of the famous Ringling Bros./Barnum & Bailey production last May, it's been rather quiet under the Big Top, but in just a few weeks, the magic and wonder of the circus will return to the tri-state - including the elephants and tigers! In fact, this may well be your last chance to see them in action. Yes, times are changing, but lucky for us, the biggest and best 3-ring production around today is headed our way. So get ready for a time-honored family tradition when Carden International presents the 54th edition of the Shrine Circus at the Owensboro Sports Center and L.D. Brown Agricultural Expo on October 17 and 18, respectively. The 2017 Shrine Circus is helmed by none other than award-winning ringmaster Brian LaPalme, a 41-year veteran of 3-ring productions - and the only ringmaster in the history of the Sarasota Circus Festival to win two gold medals. He's back after a threeyear hiatus and once again living his passion, bringing joy to people of all ages from city to city. What sort of personality does it take to be a ringmaster - especially an award-winning one? It's all enthusiasm. My mentor, Harold Ronk,

was the ringmaster with Ringling - I think it was 1952-82. When I won my second gold medal, he gave me one of his jackets. I remember meeting him in Madison Square Garden when I was a kid. And I said, 'Mr. Ronk, I want to be an announcer like you.' And he said, 'No, no, no, Brian - an announcer is just someone who has a good voice. You don't want to be an announcer, you want to be a ringmaster. That's the guy who makes the performance exciting for the audience AND the performers who are doing the same act seven days a week, month in and month out.' You've got to get audiences pumped and let me them know that this is not TV - this is live. Basically, I'm a big cheerleader without the pom-poms. With all that in mind, how do you get yourself pumped up beforehand, ready to be that big cheerleader? The way I get pumped up...when I'm out in the parking lot for the circus, all of the travel trailers and all of the trucks are out there and I walk around and the cast is all there. And you're walking by the props, by the tiger cages, by the elephants - and it's like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa!' The audience doesn't see this, but I'm seeing it and it's what starts getting me

pumped up. The sights, the smells, everyone getting ready - it's just amazing. This is what I live for. You know, I'm 60-years-old and really, how much longer will I be doing it? For me, every day is a gift from God. What acts stand out for you in this production of the Shrine Circus? There's an act called the Air Trio - three amazing aerialists from Russia. They're absolutely incredible. In fact, when I have friends and family visit, they always comment on that act. We also have an amazing clown - I don't want to give away his act, but there's a wind-up toy and something happens to the toy at the end and people just gasp. We also have a wonderful opening number production called "Animalosity" as well as amazing technicians - the music and the lights will make you just go, 'wow!' There's also an amazing dog act that you just have to see. I know I'm overusing the word "amazing," but everything about the show really is. It's big and it's beautiful.

Proceeds benefit the Rizpah Shriners. General admission tickets are $14 for children 12 & under and $18 for adults. On sale at supershrinecircus.com or 1 hour before show times at the arena. The Owensboro Sports Center is located at 1215 Hickman Ave. in Owensboro, KY. The L.D. Brown Agricultural Expo is located at 406 Elrod Rd. in Bowling Green, KY

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2017 | NEW BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

LEGENDS SPORTS BAR & GRILL 4431 SPRINGHILL DR., STE E. | OWENSBORO, KY | 270-240-5360

Locally-run establishment offers up modern take on the classic sports bar environment

W

estern Kentucky sports fans have a new place to hang out - and just in time for the college football and NFL seasons. Located in Lake Forest Town Center on Highway 54 in the space formerly occupied by Forester's Artisan Bistro, Legends Sports Bar & Grill recently opened to rave reviews. Well-deserved, mind you, considering that the owners completely renovated the building and equipped it with over 20 TVs, including a 157" screen in the dining room. In addition, the vibe is all fun and games, with Golden Tee Golf, Life-Size Jenga and a basketball goal set up for 3-point shooting contests and more. "We wanted to bring something to Owensboro that the city currently does not have - a modern bar feel like what you see in a college town, but not necessarily a college bar," explains Front of House Manager, Matt Hudson. "We want people to be able to bring their kids but at the same time we want to be a traditional sports bar where guys can come in and have beers with their buddies, watch sports games and hang out all afternoon." The big city bar comparisons extend to the seating arrangements as well. Legends features community tables that allow for easy conversation - or no conversation at all. "People who want to come in after work for quick drinks or an appetizer or just to watch a game won't have to worry about

24 |

sitting at a table," Hudson says. "A single person can just come in and relax - if they want to talk, they can, or they can just sit and be by themselves." With a seating capacity of about 150, there's plenty of room for friends and families inside plus a patio outside for warm weather days. Along with the great atmosphere at Legends, the food and drinks are guaranteed to keep sports fans coming back. The bar currently features over 40 craft and domestic beers, an extensive bourbon selection and hand-crafted cocktails as well as unique appetizers, wings, build-your-own pizzas, burgers, hot dogs and more. And according to Hudson, the owners are looking to plan and promote a number of craft beer events - tap takeovers and breweries hosted for special occasions. For Hudson and the rest of the Legends team, it's quite simply about breaking out of the typical sports bar mold. "We want to differentiate ourselves by bringing something that people don't know they're looking for, but we know they're looking for." For more info, follow Legends Sports Bar & Grill on Facebook.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2017 | BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

CRAFT AFFAIRS with Alisha Patton » Varsity Liquors Craft Beer Guru

N

ow that fall is officially here we can all rejoice in the return of cooler weather, changing leaves, and pumpkin brews. Most of the people that I talk to either have a love for pumpkin beer or are completely terrified at the thought of drinking a dessert in beer form. I am here to tell you that the experience of drinking pumpkin beers doesn't have to be scary at all. Dogfish Head Punkin - This clear, copper-colored brew is a fullbodied brown ale that is the perfect beer to warm up with this fall. It has aromas of sweet bread malt followed by cinnamon and nutmeg. The flavors are full of fresh pumpkin, brown sugar, and the right amount of spice. Even though the spice is prominent in this beer, it is a very balanced and easy drinking pumpkin beer that doesn't disappoint with a healthy 7% ABV. Southern Tier Pumking - The king is back and just as good as I remember! This medium-bodied imperial pumpkin ale pours a deep copper-color and is bursting with every fall flavor imaginable. The smell alone is like standing in a bakery full of pumpkin pies, along with hints of roasted pecans, vanilla, and graham crackers. The flavors are just as intense and slightly sweet with hints of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and caramel. The king weighs in with a stout 8.6% ABV, but the alcohol is pleasantly warming without being too overwhelming. Ballast Point Pumpkin Down - It was a no-brainer for me to add this brew to my list of pumpkin ales, simply because the Scottish Style base plus pumpkin spice is a winner in my eyes. This medium-bodied Scottish ale with pumpkin pours a clear, dark brown almost ruby color. The aromas are slightly sweet with hints of spice, toffee, and pumpkin. The flavor has a light fruitiness that gives way to a touch of nutmeg and malt, but the nature of the darker base gives plenty of toffee and caramel notes as well. While this brew is definitely the most sessionable at only 5.8% that just means you can have more than one of these without feeling overindulgent. Feel free to stop by the store and let us know your thoughts about this month's featured Pumpkin brews. Also, join us for a complimentary tasting Friday, October 27th from 5-7pm. You can find us conveniently located in the Shoe Carnival Towne Centre next to Buffalo Wild Wings. Cheers, Alisha

HIGH SCORE SALOON

Electronic utopia: Super cool arcade scheduled for late fall opening in Evansville

S

ome important details may still be up in the air - like exactly when and where the business will open - but one way or another, the High Score Saloon is coming to Evansville in late fall. We'll report back when everything is finalized, but for now, here's what you need to know: Christmas is coming early for tristate fans of vintage/modern pinball machines and classic/contemporary video games. Oh, and you can thank Clint Hoskins and Jared Neible for your good fortune. Both from the Evansville area, the two gamers actually met while on spring break at Panama City Beach, of all places. "We've been friends and drinking buddies ever since," Neible says. And soon they'll be business partners. In truth, they've been working

together for a while now, contracting out various video games and pinball machines from a shared collection of over 70 to Secret Headquarters, a comic bookstore on Evansville's north side, and other local places. The arrangement has panned out nicely to this point, but now this ying/yang duo - financial mind, Hoskins/repair guy, Neible - is ready to run the show. In other words, it's nearly high noon at the High Score Saloon. "We've been storing most of our games at my house - in fact, I bought a house just so I could store games," Neible explains with a laugh. "Games in my kitchen, in my living room. I tell people that I live in a warehouse."

The impressive inventory includes classics like stand-up Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Centipede, Joust, Simpsons, Tetris and Hydro Thunder, plus sit-down Frogger and a staggering number of pinball machines - which are very difficult to keep up and running, according to Neible. Approximately 2030 of these games will feature inside the High Score Saloon on a rotating basis, based on maintenance and, naturally, popularity. Also rotating in and out: craft beer and wine. See, Hoskins and Neible aren't just crazy about video games. Indeed, they also share a passion for adult beverages ("drinking buddies" probably gave it away), a nice selection of which will be available for patrons to enjoy while doing battle on screen. So, all the pieces are in place. Now it's just a matter of finding the right location for the High Score Saloon. Hoskins and Neible have their sights set on the perfect spot but in case it falls through, several backup plans are in the works. Really, the only thing left up for debate is the pricing set-up. Some arcades charge players a flat fee, but the guys are considering several options. Regardless, Evansville is about to re-enter an era of entertainment that

"We've been storing most of our games at my house - in fact, I bought a house just so I could store games," Neible explains with a laugh. "Games in my kitchen, in my living room. I tell people that I live in a warehouse." somehow got lost in the (iPod) shuffle, so to speak. And not a moment too soon what with everyone staring at their phones all day - time to get back to some truly interactive games. And now a few questions for Jared Neible... Will you have tournaments? Yes, we'll do things like have a Galaga tourney with proceeds going to charities like the Humane Society. We do a lot of that now at Secret Headquarters. Most people think of arcades as nerd hangouts. Do you expect to see women at High Score? Well, most people don't know this, but a woman was actually one of the main designers of Centipede. Plus, women seem to really be drawn to pinball machines, so there will definitely be a mix of people at High Score. Trust me, we don't want it to be guys night here all the time. And finally... best and worst video games of all time? My favorite is Q*bert. I built one from the ground up because I couldn't find one reasonably-priced. So, I bought a cabinet and all the parts and put it together in about 4-5 hours. The worst game is probably Defender. It seems to be universally hated, mostly because it's too hard. But I also don't care much for Ghostbusters or more contemporary sports games like Big Buck Hunter and Golden Tee Golf. For updates, follow High Score Saloon on Facebook.

International Bluegrass Music Museum Fall Concert Series

Progressive bluegrass and country acts lined up for October performances

E

very Fall Concert Series at the IBMM is special, but this season's talented lineup of performers may well be the last to grace the stage at the current location in downtown Owensboro before the transition to the new Bluegrass Museum building takes place in the spring. As a result, these final shows are taking on even greater significance, and tri-state music fans should not miss this opportunity to be a part of local history. Especially considering the sheer number of legendary acts that have passed through the "old" IBMM over the years - too many to count. And now there are just five performances to go... The Fall Concert Series got off to a bang last month with a set by the Kenny & Amanda Smith Band, a duo nominated for two IBMA awards. Now the series kicks into high gear with a double dose of progressive bluegrass and country in October. 10/5: The Stray Birds hail from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Over the last seven years, the band has played hundreds of shows and honed its sound, culminating in the release of 2016's Magic Fire, the trio's third and most acclaimed album (praised by NPR's World CafĂŠ for its "strong harmonies and sharp songwriting"). 10/20: Bill & the Belles call Johnson City, Tennessee home. This old-time quartet breathes new life into the sounds of early country music with rich harmonies and expert instrumentation. Their "contemporary reimagining of a bygone era" has earned them an IBMA Momentum Award nomination.

Bill & The Belles

Looking ahead to next month, you can catch award-winning singer-songwriter Donna Ulisse on November 3 and the one and only Robbie Fulks on November The Stray Birds 16. All shows begin at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit bluegrassmuseum.org. The IBMM is located at 117 Daviess St. in Owensboro.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2017 | ART

HEATHER LANDRY

Self-actualization or burnout? Local artist for hire finds herself at a creative crossroads

W

hen kids enter the equation, most parents are forced to put things like creative endeavors on the backburner, but for Evansville's Heather Landry, the arrival of her first born and especially her difficult second pregnancy - actually spurred a serious uptick in her artwork. The 36-year-old mom started producing digital paintings at a brisk clip and freelancing on occasion, a welcome opportunity. "My family was able to structure itself so I could stay at home with the kiddos for a couple more years," she says. "It was the first time in my life that I was able to concentrate on art for so long."

"My art has grown by leaps and bounds since I've been at Memory Portraits."

Having kids not only freed Landry up to create more, it also changed her artistic mindset. In high school, she approached her work in a more traditional sense, using soft pastels, acrylic paints and charcoals on paper and canvas - "That's what I thought of art as," she explains. But as the years went by and motherhood beckoned, Landry's perspective slowly changed. "When I had children, I realized how great it could be to have art that was a nonexistent thing on a file somewhere - it didn't have to exist unless I printed it," she says. From that point forward, she went full-on digital, inspired by her interest in video games growing up. Landry's new, less-traditional approach perfectly complemented her dark themes drawn from legends, fables, myths and

especially horror movies. But her biggest influence has always been her subconscious. "90% of all art I do is based on dreams," she says. "I sketch it out and then start the building and layering process." And the process goes something like this: Landry comes up with a "real simple" form on her computer tablet and starts overlaying photos or textures often "horrible" smart phone pics of everything from "schmutz on the wall to neat grass or rocks somewhere, chicken bones, hamburger helper, etc." After she's made a collage of sorts, it's transferred to a painting program that allows her to start drawing and painting on top of it. Ultimately, she may opt to make a print-out and continue to paint over the image with acrylics or inks, metallic paints, spray

been shown several times over the last few years at places like PG Cafe on Franklin Street. And last month, her paintings were included in the popular Space Madness event (hosted by the local Arts Council of Doom) at Angel Mounds along with a number of other incredibly talented tri-state artists. Even better, she debuted a solo show at the aforementioned PG on September 15 that runs through October 12. Titled "Premorse," the comprehensive exhibition signals a fork in the creative road as indicated in the press release: "...the pieces follow the narrative of Landry's artistic life over the past decade and end up in a heady culmination that must either lead to self-actualization, or burnout." So is this a new beginning or the end of her creative evolution? That remains to be seen.

paints, threads, cloth, torn canvas - and on and on. As Landry notes, each piece is constantly evolving and that's the beauty of the process. The creative possibilities are endless. Back when Landry was attending USI in the early 2000s, she wasn't even thinking about a career in art. In fact, in a nod to her love of science, she initially majored in biology and chemistry. And she was humming right along until... "I hit the ceiling with organic chemistry - comparative anatomy, which is like pre-med stuff," she explains. "I wasn't enjoying myself like I had with physics and other science classes. I decided that I wasn't as good at all that as I was at art, so I decided to man-up and pursue my passion since I think I have a more natural facility for it." Landry promptly changed course, shifting to a studio art major with an emphasis in printmaking. Postcollege, however, the employment landscape forced her to take regular jobs and work graveyard shifts on occasion - but that actually played in her favor, offering the opportunity to read

and create on the clock. Then about two years ago, Landry finally landed that elusive art-based position at Memory Portraits in Evansville. There, she uses Photoshop to extensively reconstruct and fix poor photos and make them look like paintings - often for display at funerals or family reunions. "It's fascinating because every picture presents a new challenge," Landry says. "My job helps me immensely, because it's eight hours of drawing practice every day. My art has grown by leaps and bounds since I've been at Memory Portraits." Many in the tight-knit Evansville art community agree. Landry's dark, complex work has

Either way, Landry's body of work to date is quite stunning - and very affordable. Previous shows have sold-out before opening night and "Premorse" did much the same. So, what now? What if opportunities to do something on a grander scale arise? Will Landry pursue the limelight or stay the course? "I would prefer to keep my life the way it is - I'm sort of scared of becoming too successful. If I could sell paintings for good money but people wouldn't know me or know where I live, that would be ideal." *Landry is also hard at work on allstory, an experimental comic. NEWS4U OCTOBER 2017 | FASHION ADVICE

This Month's Local Blogger Shout-Out: Ellie Hungry and Hopeful hungryandhopeful.wordpress.com

With Hailey Reynolds How to look unique and festive this autumn season on a college kid's budget

T

he weather has officially declared that fall is here to stay. Overnight, Evansville has exploded into a mess of ankle booties, flannels, and blanket scarves. Don't get me wrong, I love a good sweater and riding boots, it is a classic fall look, but I like to stand out a little more than the average girl. The issue at hand? I am living on a college kid's budget which means I can’t afford to buy billions of one of a kind sweaters and scarves. I have to make do with what has either been handed down to me or what I can drum up from the back of my closet. So in an effort to help you look both unique and festive this autumn

season, here are a few things to add to your wardrobe that you can pair with any outfit. Moto Leggings: I got these leggings last year and I am still obsessed with them. Waking up on those cold fall mornings and putting a pair of jeans on is just not my jam, so these have become my new best friend. These leggings look cute with most t-shirts but give a more structured and put together look than just a pair of black leggings. The Jacket: We all have that jacket that basically goes with everything and becomes your staple look for the fall months. I have two. This suede jacket is for those days when I need a little more bohemia in my life. A leather jacket is also perfect for a day when you need to take on the world with a little more "bad ass" in your step. Both jackets keep me cozy and festive. The Boots: While I practically live in my black booties, as most girls do, they do not give me the support and warmth I need when it gets a little colder. I bought my first pair of Timberland Boots this week and I have already fallen in love with them. The

After having a short cry party about it, I dug through my cabinets and made more than a few cups of my all-time favorite, their Peach Tranquility blend, which is my favorite way to relax after a long day in class.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2017 | COMMUNITY & FAMILY

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

CADENCE: Cadence is a female Chihuahua who is about 12 years old. She and twelve other small dogs were brought to the VHS from a “backyard breeder” in Warrick County who passed away. Cadence has likely been a momma many times in her life, and she’s ready to be an empty-nester on someone’s lap at home. Her adoption fee is $120. She’ll go home spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and heartworm-tested for that fee!

BUBBA: Bring on the black cat myths, world! Bubba is about the sweetest, handsomest, lovingest cat there ever was. He will look great on your lap no matter what you’re wearing, and you’d never lose him in a snowstorm! He and his three siblings had to be surrendered with their previous owner fell on hard times. He loves the company of other cats and he will gladly let you hold him. Bubba’s current address is 226 Main Street, which happens to be the River Kitty Cat Café, until he finds a forever home. His adoption fee is $30 and he’s ready to go home the same day!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT JESSICA SCHMITT & ZEE

An only child, Boonville native Jessica Schmitt was raised in the country and spent many of her early years surrounded by animals - especially during the period when her family lived on an eight-acre farm. Along with two dogs, they had nearly 30 felines that were rescued from around the area (they all slept quite cozily in the barn), so it's no surprise that Schmitt refers to herself as a "cat lady" - but not in a crazy kind of way, mind you. After getting married, she and her husband moved into an apartment and were initially unable to have a pet. But a couple of years later, the situation changed, so the happy couple headed over to the VHS to find a furry friend. "We walked into the cat room, and Zee wouldn't let us get by him," Schmitt says. "He was the most loving cat I've ever met. We knew then that he was perfect for us." Zee transitioned very easily to his new surroundings and nine months later, he continues to be a source of joy for them. "He is still very active, loving, and loves to play - but he also enjoys his cat naps!"

MR. POTATO: You never know what you’ll find when you walk into the VHS. Bunnies and hamsters and rats, oh my! Mr. Potato is a Syrian hamster and he’s up for adoption. Do you want to start out your family with a pocket pet? Why go to a pet store when you can rescue an animal who needs a home? The one thing you need to know about him is: he LOVES his exercise ball. He zooms around the VHS lobby during enrichment time like he’s headed to a Black Friday Yogi sale. Mr. Potato’s adoption fee is $5. It doesn’t include any supplies (or Yogis) but the VHS usually has some gently-used water bottles, toys, and occasionally cages for sale in the lobby.

ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2017 | LOCAL OPINION

THE WRITE STUFF with Jonathan Gluff

Is there any religious basis for the recent display of hatred in Charlottesville?

The recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia have left the country reeling. We have been left with the painful images of violence – past and present. We were given the heartrending reminder that hatred is still a part of our national fabric. We are, once again, being forced to recall and relive some of the darkest moments of our history. As a clergyperson, I want to say this to everyone reading these words: there can be no religious basis for the hatred and violence that we saw displayed in Charlottesville. Every religious tradition, with which I familiar, would agree. Hatred, violence, oppression, intimidation, bullying, and the deprivation of human dignity are antithetical to authentic and genuine faith. Even more disturbing than the actions of Charlottesville are the reverberations in our own Evansville/Tri-State community. The practitioners of hatred are laying plans for raising their witness in Evansville. I urge all people of good will to simply ignore them. Do not engage with them. By all means, do not confront them. Simply leave them alone. By doing so, as my tradition teaches, “you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Reach out to those who see a better way. Break down the walls that divide. Bring to reality this statement: “E is for everyone.” Remember Martin Luther King’s words: “hate is simply too great a burden to bear.” First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

Injustice is Swift (Or Why am I Again Defending People I can't Stand?)

S

ometimes, by the time I get to write about a subject, it’s no longer relevant. Case in point: A ridiculous clickbait article about everyone’s favorite pop-country chanteuse, Taylor Swift, that popped up in my newsfeed near the end of August that claimed she was everyone’s favorite buzzword “problematic.” But while the article may have passed by the public eye without notice, I certainly blinked more than a few times. Titled “'5 Important Reasons I Can't Love Taylor Swift Anymore,” the piece is full of hard-hitting facts. Facts that really matter and can help heal the racial divide in this country. Facts like… her use of the term “squad” is cultural appropriation? (Apparently, that word was never used before its adoption as a Twitter hashtag in mid-2015. Or at least that’s what this Bustle.com piece would have us believe.) Or that her aforementioned “squad” consisting mostly of women who are similar in appearance to her somehow constitutes… actually, I’m not really sure of the point they were trying to make here, and I’m not sure the author was either. I guess that dictating the height, weight, ethnicity, and perceived attractiveness of a celebrity’s friends is their idea of how to solve issues of race and discrimination in our country. (I could be wrong, but I think

October 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

trying to force someone to hang out with people of specific races or ethnicities is the opposite of how to solve that problem…) Make no mistake - I’m no fan of Taylor Swift’s. (Not because of some shallow, trendy, faux-outrage, but because her music is shallow, trendy, faux-country.) But there is a real social injustice being done here: This Tumblr post masquerading as a legitimate article trying to call out supposed racism is belittling actual racism. Working with the public for many years in the retail sector, I’ve seen real racism. I’ve seen a customer request a different cashier because he didn’t want to check out with a black cashier. I’ve heard a customer accuse a store manager of getting her position solely because of the color of her skin and not the fact that she was perhaps the mostrespected manager in the store by all the employees. A retailer kowtowed to a customer’s demands that a white driver deliver his appliances. These things are racist, and to equate them to a nasally, whiny, melodramatic pop star’s friends makes me wonder how cushy a life that writer must have.

WORDS FROM WHITNEY In Remembrance of Whitney Patterson

When you choose to form a family, it's for life

On Thursday, September 21st a beautiful soul, a loyal friend, a down to earth, ‘take what you get from me and live with it’ person, a caring spirit, a great writer and a sister to those that knew her, was taken from all of us at News 4U.

"S

o, when are you going to have kids?" This is a question that plagues (mostly) women from an early age. Asked by family members, friends, and even strangers, for some, it can be an unwelcome and uncomfortable query. The choice to procreate or not is a deeply personal one. In long-term, monogamous relationships, it's only a matter of time before this becomes a common topic at holiday celebrations, and as time goes on, more couples are choosing to abstain from having children, much to the chagrin of grandmas across the world. Maybe it's because of the dynamic of courting realism in today's world - couples are less likely to force a relationship to stay intact like previous generations were taught, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Millennials also seem to acknowledge their lack of appropriate income to care for children, or ultimately, they just... don't want to spawn. Of course, chances are, if you know an individual or a couple in this age group, whether they are childless or not, they more than likely own at least one pet, and it's not a goldfish. The #furbaby craze has taken social media by storm, and folks get straight up offended by human child-breeders' dismissal of adopting animals as a valid source of familial care-taking. When people split up or divorce, an immediate shrugged response by those holier-than-thou soccer moms is, "at least you don't have kids." Wtf? So, because I chose not to recklessly shoot out a few kids in today's environment means that my grief isn't worthy? Or that I

haven't lost a family I dearly love? As someone without human children, this mentality makes my eye twitch. Not only have I decided in the past several years that I would indeed like to carry or adopt a child - something that is highly difficult as a single lesbian - I am also one of two proud mommas of two sweet and exhausting dogs. Starting over after the loss of a longterm relationship is hard enough - I cannot imagine losing the ability to spend time with, raise, and love on our babies. Thankfully, I'm lucky enough to have a former partner who gets it, and we've made decisions together as a family to keep the girls together, to share responsibility and time with them for their sake, because they're innocent and this is the only life they know. She and I may not be together, but we share the belief that when you choose to form a family, whether it's by birth or adoption, human or not, it's for life. So, the next time you decide to pressure someone about their choices, just don't. And for the love of whatever, don't whip out the "at leasts" when people are going through a split. Instead, attempt to put yourself in their situation and be grateful for what you have.

We decided to publish her last ‘Words From Whitney’ because that’s what she loved to write and that’s what she would have wanted. We’ll miss Whitney every single day and News 4U will never be the same without her spirit, spunk, opinions and realness. Our hearts are heavy with sadness, our world is shaken and our thoughts and prayers are with Whitney’s friends and family. Whitney, thank you for the time you spent with us, the words you gave us, your loyalty, your smile and your heart. We all loved you very much and will miss you dearly. - Brian, Tommy, TJ, Terri, Lexie, Jen, Kelsey and Jessica Publisher’s Note: If you are worried about your thoughts or feelings, it’s important to reach out for help. There are many options when it comes to dealing with suicidal thoughts or feelings. No matter how bad your problems are or how dark life may seem, there are people who care. "CROW" by John Thurgood

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE Boycott The Bachelor?

T

he night after his dad's funeral, Charlie sat on his back stoop and drank a single beer, sipping it slow enough that the last gulp was warm from his hands. He crushed the can and tossed it toward the garbage receptacles near his garage. He wasn't prone to acts of defiance, but given the circumstances, he allowed himself to relish in his outburst. Not long after, a crow landed atop the plastic trash bin and turned as crows do to look directly at him. Charlie wanted to think the crow's appearance meant something, but being the educated man he was, it was hard to place too much faith in a kingdom of which humans reigned supreme. The next day, he found a crow perched on the hood of his Hyundai Sonata. It seemed absurd to think it was the same crow from the night before. “Go away,” he told it as he stepped around to the driver's side door, careful not to provoke the bird. It flew off once he started the car. Relieved, he drove to work. He saw the crow again during lunch, and on his drive home. It didn't seem like much of a problem until he was in the meat department of his local grocery store. A woman in a black apron pointed behind Charlie. “Sir, you can't bring that in here.” Charlie turned to find the black crow standing on the front of his shopping cart. It pecked at a carton of eggs. The lid flipped back, and the crow flapped its wings, surprised. Charlie grabbed the bird and briskly walked out of the store, holding the animal close to his chest. It didn't struggle, and it felt warm in his hands, much warmer than he'd imagined. In the parking lot, he sat the crow on the roof of his car. “What do you want?” he asked it. The bird only blinked at him with its glassy black eyes. “All right. Fine.” Charlie put the crow in the passenger seat, and he drove the bird out to the old mill. His dad's grandpa had built a lumber company out of a land deed that had fallen into his hands through marriage or gambling or something nefarious. His family lore was still something of a mystery to him. The crow took flight when he opened the passenger door. He circled high over what was left of the old warehouse and entered through a broken window on the second floor. Charlie found it on a desk in a loft office. It tapped one of the drawers with its beak, and Charlie opened it. Inside, lay a Colt Dragoon Revolver. “What am I supposed to do with that?” Charlie asked the crow, but the bird only blinked its glossy eyes before unfolding its wings and flying away.

Arie Luyendyk Jr. - who is that, you ask? Well that’s the same question millions of Bachelor fans had when the 36-year old race car driver was announced as the new Bachelor just last month on Good Morning America. This decision caused an uproar and a divide within Bachelor Nation itself, with many people proclaiming that they would refuse to watch the show and even boycott the franchise entirely. After months of teasing who the next Bachelor would be and with there being speculation going around about several of the top guys from Rachel Lindsay’s season of The Bachelorette, it was mind-blowing that they picked someone who was a runner-up on Emily Maynard’s season a whopping five years ago! The reason this is so weird is because normally the show picks someone who is a runner-up from the past season, which usually films in March and premieres in May, with The Bachelor filming in November and premiering in January. To me and the rest of Bachelor Nation, Peter Krauss from Madison, Wisconsin was the obvious choice. It made perfect sense that the hunky athletic trainer and business owner - ok, he owns an athletic training business and I’m sure he’s profited plenty off of his experience on The Bachelorette but boy is he cute with that salt and pepper hair and sexy smile - would get the coveted title. So is it really the end of the world that Arie was chosen? No. Honestly, Chris Harrison has said in many interviews that Krauss would be a good Bachelor someday and if the timing works, he just might be. So maybe we shouldn’t boycott The Bachelor after all. Even though the lead might not be the cheesehead heartthrob I was hoping for, I will still tune in to watch the friendships between the female contestants grow. Which is another reason why I love the show - but that’s another topic for another column. As for now, fans not happy with Arie being chosen should just suck it up because your favorite bae will probably be the Bachelor some day or end up on Bachelor in Paradise or the Winter Games. So don’t fret, grab your favorite rose and a group of friends and get ready to watch Arie Luyendyk Jr., ABC’s 2018 Bachelor, on Monday nights this upcoming January. - Marisa Patwa

This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices. This is Suburbicon.

DEATH NOTE (TV-MA) NETFLIX Netflix’s adaptation of Death Note isn’t anywhere near as disappointing as other animes reworked for live-action. Remember Dragonball? Death Note is coherent, with a few decent performances, and a unique plot. The grim tale is grounded in an 80s-style young romance, which creates an extra Hollywood layer you don’t really get in the cartoon. However, although at the outset of the film it feels like an interesting new infusion, this narrative of teenage love ends up overdone and ruining the better aspects of the concept, in favor of cheap love and gore. The main character, Light, comes across as a god of death, armed with a book which allows him to off anyone - in any way he likes - just by writing their name and the details of their death in the Death Note book. Starting off as a vigilante punishing criminals, the absolute power quickly corrupts his and his love interest’s benevolent intentions. While the acclaimed anime masterfully tackles complex ideas such as subjective morality and theism, universal empathy, and losing yourself, the movie churns out a simple tragedy about two naive teens in love who each thought they knew best how to fix the world. - Laura Engram

What Happened to Monday is the brutal tale of seven identical sisters - septuplets - living in a dystopian future where overpopulation has become a real and present hazard to society. To counteract the problem, the United States government has created the Child Allocation Bureau, which enacts merciless policies and enforcement regarding how many children can be born and how “unlawful” children are to be disposed of. Despite being a heavily visual and suspenseful thriller, these aspects only add to the deeply thoughtful questions the movie raises regarding the ethics and ultimate value, or lack thereof, in a GDP-geared society. It begs the questions: What does production and consumption actually mean for us? How can it mean anything, if life itself means so little? And as the world continues to grow, how can we prevent these evils? Now adults, each of the seven siblings are working together, as they have been their entire lives, in an attempt to survive under the guise of a single identity. However, by way of one sister’s romantic entanglement, their secret is accidently discovered, and the government sends agents after the rest of the septuplets to kidnap and assassinate them. The ride is both dramatic and intense. - Laura Engram

SZA CTRL Top Dawg Entertainment SZA is an utterly stark new artist in the R&B world, with all her naked sincerity, as well as a unique, brutally passionate and vivacious vocal style. CTRL, her LP record debut, adds a sure, but experimentally innovative roundness and jive to each track, drawing from a variety of instruments and backgrounds, which feels different and pristine. Every track feels like beautifully complicated honesty and impulse. SZA is splattering herself onto a vibrant canvas of sexy, lively rhythm and hues. You’ll find yourself moving, but intently listening to her personal disquieted truths throughout the entire album. My favorite songs are "Normal Girl" and "Drew Barrymore" and “Garden (Say It Like Dat).” SZA croons in a velvety sigh, “Need you for the old me / Need you for my sanity… Can you remind me of my gravity?” Those words resound as something real in how we love, mingle, and experience each other, working in as her main theme. SZA offers a pragmatic elegance alongside her open heart and fresh beats in CTRL which will pull at you, sway your hips, and leave you feeling bright, inquisitive, and playful. - Laura Engram

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE Hug of Thunder Arts & Crafts Broken Social Scene returns to us after seven years away with an intensely revving and climactic album, Hug of Thunder. For all the dramatic style and nuanced execution the fifteen members poured into this release, the most compelling songs for me are those like “Please Take Me with You,” which intersect these sensational elements with the soft whispers of plainspoken vocals or pivotal moments of musical quiet. Yet in all honesty, the album offers something to everyone. As such an involved project, not only is it easy to see why, but it is challenging to imagine that the sheer variety of performers harmoniously nodding to the album’s melodic and thematic consistency wouldn’t offer new things to nearly anyone. The overall feel of the album is weighty, but somehow the competing instrumentals all spark and bubble to something light and airy. This frothy iron quality churns out most noticeably in the title track and gains traction toward the compelling finale “Mouth Guards of the Apocalypse.” Most every track contains multifaceted emotions ranging from the joy of “Stay Happy” to the anxious desire of “Vanity Pale Kids.” - Laura Engram

CHUCK BERRY Chuck Dualtone/Decca Before his death in March 2017, rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry entered the studio one last time to record a final album. Chuck begins with “Wonderful Woman.” Ingrid Berry’s harmonica starts the show, followed by the superb guitar playing Chuck Berry fans came to expect after decades of dedication to the craft. A guest appearance by Gary Clark, Jr. adds a nice touch. “Big Boys” sees Berry discussing the desire to grow up quickly as a young boy in school. The guitar riff that kicks off the song sounds eerily reminiscent of the one from “Johnny B. Goode.” This song also features a notable guest appearance from Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine fame on guitar. “Darlin’” features Robert Lohr’s masterful piano playing at the song’s outset. This ballad sounds like it belongs on one of Berry’s albums from the 1950s. “Lady B. Goode” picks up where Berry’s classic “Johnny B. Goode” left off in 1958. This tune looks at the saga from the point of view of a woman in love with the famous guitar player. Berry talks rather than sings on “Dutchman,” a song about a stranger who walks into a bar and identifies himself as a songwriter who fell on hard times. A heavy and steady guitar track undergirds the song. The heavy guitar continues on “Eyes of a Man,” the album's final song. It deals with the subject of men building great temples as monuments to themselves. In reality, women who raise the next generation are the true temple builders of society. After not releasing any new music for the better part of 40 years, Chuck Berry's final album deserves to find a place in the collection of every music lover, especially those who love the history of rock and roll. - Paul Bragin, WUEV A Case of the Blues is on every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on 91.5-FM WUEV and online at wuev.org.

RAINER MARIA Rainer Maria Polyvinyl 2017 has been a good year for bands to get back together, doubly so for those with roots in the ‘90s emo scene. Luckily, the streak of solid reunions continues with Rainer Maria’s self-titled return.

The album wastes no time in jumping back into that earnest, heartfelt sappy goodness that only a Midwestern-bred band can provide. “Broke Open Love” bemoans a dying relationship amidst a bed of brooding, atmospheric guitars and shuffling drums, while the droning instruments and four-on-the-floor drumbeat paint the perfectly bleak backdrop for two young nihilistic hipsters in love on “Suicides and Lazy Eyes.” But it’s not all star-crossed lovers and breakups. “Forest Mattress” finds singer/bassist Caithlin De Marrais crooning about a Walden-esque excursion over a haunting microtonal minor riff. Strangely, “Ornaments of Empty,” “Communicator,” and “Hellebore” manage to wind that nature imagery into a metaphor for a relationship. (That’s something you won’t find in Thoreau.)

Regardless, between the allusions to Italian painters, obscure poisonous plants, and predators posing as significant others, you’ll find the same classic Rainer Maria that helped secure their place in many a bespectacled, Chuck-Taylor-and-plaid-shirt-clad emo kid’s heart. - Jonathan Gluff

CLOAKROOM Time Well Relapse Records Another month, another shoegaze band. I’m certainly not complaining - it’s nice to see some success for something that isn’t just more DJs programming beats and bass drops or pop stars and rappers with production teams writing music-by-numbers. This trio of ‘gazers hail from northwest Indiana, a scene I used to frequent in my early/mid-20’s. Given that much of northern Indiana is a cold, industrial wasteland of abandoned factories, it makes perfect sense that these three fall firmly into the more nihilistic side of shoegaze. The dark, droning guitars and extended song lengths put them more along the lines of Jesu and A Place to Bury Strangers than the only slightly cheerier My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. An ominous tom-heavy drum beat kicks off the album, followed by a watery, chorus-and-reverb-laden guitar line that gives way to a wall of grizzly fuzz. The breathy, ethereal vocals provide a suitable juxtaposition to the bass-heavy production that would make Steve Albini proud. A tonguein-cheek sardonic cover of the old church hymn “Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)” adds a layer of existential heaviness. - Jonathan Gluff

BRAND NEW Science Fiction Procrastinate! Music Traitors I have adored Brand New for a long time. Deja Entendu is actually an album that sincerely moved me as a teenager. So when I discovered they were finally releasing another full-length album, I was excited. Looking back, I'm not sure why I thought they’d recapture that perfect, bold honesty present in their first releases. Science Fiction does have a few very pronounced and pointed tracks - my favorite being the singles “Can't Get It Out” and “Same Logic/Teeth” - and the lyrics are pretty weighty, but the album as a whole feels forgettable. The singing and words are all of that same depressive and sober, but many tracks are deadpan. Without any of that necessary disgust or edge, it comes off simply like a mopey man-child moping. In these songs, the guitars twang and resound into something like a messy embrace with dynamic climaxes and falls. It almost feels like the band made a purposeful decision to try and evolve their sound into that of a fledgling, sloppy indie rock band. I give them props for doing what they want, but this album disappointed me. - Laura Engram

STONE SOUR Hydrograd Roadrunner Records Stone Sour is one of those bands I will always recognize for a single song, “Through Glass.” Despite that, they are no one-hit wonder, and both their dark depths along with broader influences and styles are clearly felt in Hydrograd. The seething molten rage that comes through in the album is contrasted well, sometimes with gritty and grungy licks and sometimes with downplaying, rumbling softness. In each musical iteration the vocals of Corey Taylor add this midfrequency burning drag that levels the snarling disarray. The work shoots off like a thundering gunshot after the instrumental intro, in “Taipei Person/Allah Tea.” The title track comes in just a bit later with a dark sexiness and swagger in the guitar play and no f*cks given personality: “I’m not better than you/ I’m just better.” Varied genres are tugging on this rock release, from ska-ish riffs in “Rose Red Violet Blue” to a full-on country track in “St. Marie” that is sure to give you a headache. Ultimately, this comes off as a technically interesting album for fans, with some pretty guitar work, but flat in feeling. - Laura Engram Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • October 2017

OCTOBER BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

It’s that time of year. Dogfish Head has been brewing this one seasonally for several years. It’s definitely one of my favorite pumpkin ales. It pours up a clear dark copper color with a respectable head and some lacing. The nose is of caramel, pumpkin and a well-balanced trio of spices. Taste follows aroma with moderate hop bitterness and a clean finish. It’s very drinkable with medium body, smooth and flavorful yet not overly spiced. I recommend it. It’s very good!

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thick white head forms on this coppercolored brown ale and never completely evaporates. Sweet and spicy notes from the pumpkin, brown sugar cinnamon and nutmeg control the nose. The sweet flavors continue with the first sip of the beer, followed by spice notes that stick around in the long finish. Try this seasonal offering while it’s available. Pair it with holiday favorites like turkey, stuffing or sharp Cheddar cheese.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a clear, amber-colored beer. It's nice to see these guys turn out a pumpkin beer. It does have a 7% ABV, but it's just a little better than average. I can taste the all spice and it does have a crisp finish. I consider this about average compared to other pumpkin beers out there - but it's not bad at all.

As it turns out, Vienna Lager is actually a particular brewing style. This one pours up an attractive, slightly cloudy dark copper color with a modest off-white head that fades promptly. Its aroma is pronounced and slightly toasty malts are up front with caramel and subtle hops. The taste follows aroma with a nice medium mouthfeel and a pleasant, moderately-hopped finish. Overall, this is a very drinkable and crisp tasting brew with a classic European style that makes it so much more than the many cheap domestic lagers. Try it, you’ll like it.

A thick white head crowns this Vienna style lager upon pouring it into a pilsner glass. The nose displays a good amount of sweetness from the malt. Sweet malt flavors remain with the initial tasting, followed by some bitterness from the hops. People who enjoy beers with more malt characteristics and craft beer novices will want to taste this multiple awardwinning beer. Pair it with a variety of pork products, other grilled meats and mild cheeses.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a clear, amber colored beer. It has a nice malty flavor but it has some sort of odd flavor at the finish that I can't put my finger on - just something added to the flavor that does not complement the beer. Other than that, it's pretty good.

Munster Indiana-based Three Floyds collaborated with the acclaimed Danish gypsy brewer Mikkeller on the WarPigs brewery, which is based in Denmark, Copenhagen. Now they have a Chicagobased brewery. The Lazurite IPA pours up a clear yellow color with a white head and light lacing. The aroma is citrus (maybe tangerine) mostly. The taste is leaning more toward a pale ale with mild citrusy hops and light malts but easy to drink. The mouthfeel is medium and drinkability is great. Check it out!

A very thick white head tops this India Pale Ale after pouring it into a traditional English pub glass. A generous amount of hop scents dominate the nose, mostly citrus, but with some pine also present. The hop flavors remain while drinking the beer, with some tart citrus and a long finish. People who enjoy IPAs will certainly want to try this rare offering. Pair it with spicy foods.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

So these guys make beers other than Zombie Dust. That is all everyone talks about. This is a clear, straw- colored beer. I consider this a little better than an average IPA. It's heavy with the grapefruit flavor but other than that, I can't taste much else. It's still pretty smooth and easy to drink and I'm glad to have something else made by this brewery.

Abita Brewing Pecan Ale There’s some caramel and because I know that I’m supposed to smell it, some nuttiness. As usual, the flavor mostly follows the aroma with something that I can only describe as a woodiness. Again, though, like the nose, it’s too subdued. This ale doesn’t taste bad but unfortunately, in my opinion, it simply doesn’t have enough taste.

DANIEL KNIGHT - 2.75

Abita is a Louisiana-based brewer that has tried something I’m not sure any other brewer has - an ale brewed with natural oil from toasted pecans. It pours up a dark copperish, mostly clear-looking color with a humble airy, light beige, half-finger head. Its aroma is understated and frankly uninteresting.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A decent white head rests on top of a deep golden American ale. A good mixture of malt and hops fill the nose, with the malt remaining a little longer. The balance continues during the tasting, with crisp carbonation and some nuttiness from the pecans also present, especially in the finish.

Craft beer lovers will want to try this seasonal during the fall. Pair it with pecan pie or other popular fall desserts.

Walter the Wine Guy FROM LIQUOR LOCKER

Does the glass you are drinking your wine from make a difference?

H

ave you ever had one of those moments that just blows up all preconceived notions? Well, last month I had one of those moments. I went to a trade tasting for my work held by Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits. I tasted some incredible wines, and I must give them a shout-out for a job well done! While there, I attended a “Riedel Glassware” lecture. This lecture was about their “Grape Varietal Specific” glasses. I must admit, I was VERY skeptical. I have been drinking wines for 30+ years and have been using many styles of glasses that were in and out of vogue. Thick and thin, stemmed and stemless, glass and plastic. Basically, I had come to the conclusion that, personally, I liked stemmed glasses, but if the wine was good, I would drink it out of a boot! However, the lecture I attended completely changed my thinking! The first glass we drank from was the Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling glass. We tasted the wine from a plastic cocktail cup first, and it tasted good; Sauv blanc is one of my favorite wines so this was not a surprise. Then we poured the wine into the proper glass, and I tasted flavors I had never gotten before from this wine! Mind blown! We also drank from their Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon glasses. This forced me to find more information on how this was done, so I could tell you about it. First, this will probably be an expensive undertaking for many of you, but if you can afford this luxury, I would

STRONGLY recommend this. If you cannot to buy all of them, buy them one at a time. You will not be disappointed. Now, on to why these glasses work. Stemware consists of 3 parts: the bowl, the stem and the base. The height of the stem and the width of the glass are part of the design, the architecture. The Grape Varietal specific stemware features finely-tuned glass bowls consisting of three variables: shape, size, and rim diameter. This glassware has to translate the “message” of the wine to the human senses. To this end, there are four sensations in the wine. • Bouquet: the stemware is responsible for delivering the quality and intensity of the wines aroma. • Texture: the stemware highlights the exciting and diverse styles of “mouthfeel” in the wine, be it watery, creamy, silky, or velvety. • Flavor: the stemware creates a balanced interaction between the fruit, minerality, acidity, and bitter components of the wine. • Finish: the stemware offers a pleasant, seamless, harmonious, and long-lasting aftertaste. I am trying to see if I can get a person to do a demonstration in one of the stores so you
