I think they captured the emotion really well. Seasons Change signaled your first studio release since 2013's See You Tonight - a long gap of time in the music industry. What was your mindset during that period? Honestly, I was feeling good for most of that...I mean, I'd made a full record that was ready to go in 2015 or 2016 and that would have been a semi-normal time period in between albums but that never came out. But during that time I'd written "Five More Minutes" and written "In Between" - which is my current single - and a couple others that are on the Seasons Change record that I was excited about, so I was feeling good about what we were writing and the music that we had, but towards the end of that period there was definitely frustration at not being able to get that music out. The current version of American Idol seems overly-friendly - judges go out of their way to not hurt anyone's feelings. Is there a case to be made for the earlier seasons being more constructive in terms of criticism? Yeah, so my season was the first one where it started to get a little friendlier - it was the first season without Simon [Cowell] and I'm glad because he would have not been kind to me [laughs]. But we still had folks like Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and Randy [Jackson]. They were nice but they would give us some constructive criticism, more so off camera than on camera. I mean, they'd be there in rehearsals with us, working with us. It's definitely always good to applaud somebody and definitely cheer them on. But a show like that I feel like people need to get some constructive criticism, because for me, I was bagging groceries two months prior to being on the biggest TV show in the country. I needed help. It still must be crazy to think back to your initial audition when you were standing there with probably thousands of other hopefuls. Yeah, I never once thought that I was going to be "The Idol" - honestly, I was thinking what the heck am I even doing here? But yeah, it was pretty wild. Where I auditioned was Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I think there were 15,000 people auditioning that day and one of the previous Idol contestants, Danny Gokey, was there. He came out to say, "good luck, everybody" on the microphone and, you know, "one of you guys might be the next American Idol." His tour manager was there that day and he was standing beside him when he said that and he said that he was like, 'yeah, right,' and it turns out that guy has been my tour manager for the last eight years. That's pretty wild how that all works out. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

After a late September season-opening Classics concert featuring Conductor Finalist Laura Jackson and guest pianist Daniel HSU, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra is gearing up for its first Pops performance of the year on October 5 and 6. The spellbinding Carnaval with Troupe Vertigo fuses together elements of cirque acrobatics, classical dance and contemporary theater, taking you on a journey through the world of artistic movement. The Los Angeles-based company employs worldclass aerial artists, contortionists and ballet dancers whose "dizzying acts defy gravity and leave its lucky audiences in awe (Los Angeles Times)." Maestro Savia and the Orchestra will follow that highlyanticipated performance up with the second Classics concert of the new season on October 19. Featuring Conductor Finalist Scott Seaton and cellist Sterling Elliott, the evening will begin with Michael Torke's "ASH" with its "unique and intriguing fusion of classical and pop with a vibrant, contemporary sound." The focus then shifts to Elliott and his, uh, sterling interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations followed by a dazzling run through Beethoven's dynamic Fourth Symphony. Both Jackson and Seaton are in the running to replace Maestro Savia as EPO Musical Director at the conclusion of this season, so it's a great opportunity to see and hear what they can do at the helm of the region's best orchestra. Get your tickets soon for the Pops performance by Carnaval with Troupe Vertigo and the Classics concert featuring Scott Seaton & Sterling Elliott! Times: 10/5 (7 p.m.); 10/6 (2 p.m.); 10/19 (7 p.m.). HISTORIC NEWBURGH

GHOST WALKS O C TO B ER 1 8 -2 0 TIM E FO R M O R E SPINE-TING LING TA LES FR O M NEW B U R G H'S HA U NTED PA ST Every October, Historic Newburgh serves as the creepy backdrop to some truly spooky tales detailing the area's haunted past. These "Ghost Walks," as they're appropriately known, always leave attendees of all ages wide-eyed and entranced by their tour guide's bone-chilling stories. No monsters jump out, no blood-curdling screams echo in the night; the scares are purely psychological - and lots of fun! For the 26th edition of Ghost Walks, organizers are bringing back the popular Hayride Tour in addition to the traditional eerie strolls down Water & State Streets. Rest assured all three tours are guaranteed to "enlighten and frighten." Water Street Tour Hear ghost stories from Newburgh's early settler days, the Civil War Era, and even ghostly events that occurred during the 1900s. Featured stories include the tale of the Steamboat Missouri and the Newburgh Tobacco Company's "Homespun Twist." State Street Tour More astonishing tales from the Civil War Era and the early 1900s make this a spooky tour, indeed. Learn the unnerving truth about the tragedy at Farmer's Bank, the Exchange Hotel's slave history and Hulvershorn's Coffin Shop. Hayride Tour (limited seating available) Bring your family and friends for a hayride through Historic Newburgh's downtown district as turn of the century tour guides and re-enactors regale you with mysterious ghost stories. An optional walk across the historic red bridge will only add to the intrigue. Guided walking tours depart every 12 minutes from Preservation Hall (200 State Street). Each tour lasts app. an hour. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. For tickets and more info, visit historicnewburgh.org or call 812-853-2815. Walk tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Hayride tickets are $15.

J A C O B SV IL L E N EIGHBORHOOD C EL EB R ATION R ETU RNS FOR MORE G HOUL ISH F UN It may have taken longer than expected - or at least it seemed that way - but once the North Main Street renovations were finally completed, the results were well worth the wait. The historic strip of Evansville that leads to Bosse Field has never looked better with improvements to roadways and more that have turned the Jacobsville area into a unique neighborhood with its own special charm and a welcoming, homegrown vibe that separates it from the more commercial feel of the east side, for instance. With all that being said, North Main Street has truly blossomed and it's become a great place for friends and families to spend time considering all the delicious restaurants and shopping available. So it made perfect sense to start a new community tradition last year that would bring people together in the name of everyone's favorite spooky day. Enter the inaugural Halloween on North Main. A fun afternoon for all involved, this first time event drew people of all ages for games, prizes, costume contests, entertainment, and of course, trick or treats. And now it's time to do it all again. This year's Halloween celebration will feature a DJ spinning great tunes, an appearance by the Shriner's Funsters, the Newburgh Civitan Zombie Farm and...maybe even Buzz Lightyear and Woody! FYI, the costume contest starts at 4 p.m. at the Paint & Carpet Depot with cash prizes ranging from $100-$500. Come celebrate the resurgence of North Main Street! IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock

We’re all coming off the fried food hangover that is the Fall Festival, so I thought I would lighten things up with a soup that is super tasty, healthy, and easy to make. I originally got it from one of my favorite cookbook series, Thug Kitchen, which is all plant-based meals, so this is meant to be vegan, but I didn’t have vegetable broth and wasn’t motivated to go to the store. I will tell you how to make it vegan at the end. This is vegetarian, however, but you could easily add chicken if you really wanted to!

Find more recipes on

CHICKPEA NOODLE SOUP

Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book:

The Best is Yet to Come

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

3 TBS olive oil 1 medium onion, sliced 3 medium carrots, cut lengthwise and then cut into quarters 2 small parsnips, cut crosswise and cut into quarter moons 3 to 4 cloves of garlic, minced 3 medium ribs of celery, chopped ½ medium red pepper chopped 2 TBS soy sauce (I used coconut aminos) 1 tsp dried oregano 2 cans drained chickpeas 2 TBS fresh thyme ½ white wine (or you can just use extra broth) ¼ chopped fresh parsley 6 cups chicken broth (if you want to be vegan, this is where you use vegetable broth!) 8 oz. of noodles, cooked 2 TBS lemon juice (I love lemon juice, so I ended up using an entire lemon)

DIRECTIONS: •

In a large soup pot, warm the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, parsnips, and celery, and cook until the onion is starting to brown in some places, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat and add the garlic, oregano, and soy sauce and cook for one more minute. Throw in the chickpeas, thyme, parsley, and white wine and mix it up with everything in the pot. Add the broth and let it come to a simmer for about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium low and add the cooked noodles, lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Taste and add more as it simmers because it will change. Serve right away. If you make extra and want to freeze it, keep the noodles separate, then just add the noodles as you serve.

Just make it taste good! 32 | OCTOBER 2019

brought in Lanae Hyneman for a test read and the chemistry with Gray was immediate - not that surprising, perhaps, seeing as the two are best friends, though polar opposites in terms of temperament. While Gray is laidback, Hyneman's more of a strong-willed individual, unafraid to speak her mind. Interestingly, in Morbid Colors, their real life roles are reversed which creates a fascinating dymanic on screen - though the actual filming proved a challenge for the relatively inexperienced Hyneman. "I would be so hard on myself, but Matt would say, 'it's totally cool, you're fine' and Kara would help me slow my roll on set," she says. Production on Morbid Colors began in the spring of 2018 and after a long break to allow Gray to fulfill prior theater commitments, wrapped up this summer. Atypical of a lot of directors, Packman welcomed the input of Gray and Hyneman, even granting them co-executive producer titles. "I knew the film would be better if all three of us were doing everything equally in a collaborative way," he says. "I've been the auteur for 15 years, and I wanted to extend that to other people." With just a month to go before the big premier, the crew is busy making final tweaks with assistance from film aficionado Jakob Bilinski, one of the area's most respected color experts. Advanced trailers for the movie have created quite a buzz online with many of the biggest horror-based websites chiming in with praise, signaling that this could be one of the most exciting regional releases since the Volumes of Blood anthology. Do yourself a favor and check out the Morbid Colors Facebook page for a taste of what's to come.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2019 | ENTERTAINMENT

with Marisa Patwa NEWBURGH NATIVE AND DREAMWORKS ANIMATION TECHNICAL EFFECTS DIRECTOR KENT ESTEP BREAKS DOWN HIS ROLE WORKING ON HALLOWEEN-ESQUE ANIMATED FILM PARANORMAN Warrick County native Kent Estep has been behind some of the creepiest cartoon movies in the past few years. Currently the Senior FX Technical Director at DreamWorks Animation, he previously worked on the technical effects for ParaNorman, a 2012 Laika project which follows awkward young boy Norman Babcock (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who just so happens to be a medium. There is also a witch curse and zombie apocalypse in the mix, but Estep had less to do with the plot of ParaNorman and more so with making the technical effects fun, creative and just a little bit eerie. Estep enthusiastically accepted an offer to work for Laika in July 2011 because of his enjoyable experiences working on animated features Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (2009) and Arthur Christmas (2011), but mostly, due to his love for one of the company's previous films, Coraline (2009). “[Coraline] was amazing, fun, cool, exciting and unique - basically everything I want in a movie," Estep says. "From the effect of having the world rolling up and vanishing to one of my favorite sequences of all time with the jumping mice circus and all of the weird characters, including my favorite - the cat. ‘No. I'm not the other anything. I'm me!,’ the cat [said] when he first speaks to Coraline...in the other world.” While at Laika, Estep jumped right into ParaNorman, which was the first stop motion/puppet work film he had worked on at that point in his career. “With a stop motion movie, sets and puppets are all designed and built prior to us visual effects/computer people coming on to the project,” he says. “So, we get the task of matching our work to existing, real models.” Estep pioneered the Norman Vision special effect for ParaNorman, in which the 11-year-old can see into the past. A particularly hard shot to capture was the scene where Norman is magically transported through his vision from the school bathroom to a forest, and involves the bathroom “burning away.” “It took two months and was quite a challenge, as the whole bathroom had to be in 3D, because as Norman’s vision kicks in, the camera dollies backward to reveal the forest,” Estep says. “It was truly odd, but a fun shot to work on.” Estep stayed on at Laika to work on the animated fantasy comedy The Boxtrolls (2014), but is currently churning out movie after movie at DreamWorks Animation. His latest work can be seen in the kid-friendly Abominable (released 9/27) and Trolls World Tour, which arrives in theaters on April 17, 2020. When it comes to working on horror animation, Estep enjoys the diverse aesthetics and chance to play visually. “It’s interesting because there’s never one look for magic or other ethereal phenomena,” he says. “Every show wants to create its own unique look. So, there is excitement in being able to exercise some creativity and make something unlike anyone has ever seen.”

with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. Each month I'm offering up four bite-sized reviews, so read on and then listen in! Want more podcast recommendations? EVERYTHING IS ALIVE (MONTHLY)

Ian Chillag has interviewed a lot of people in his career, but he wanted to mix things up, so he created Everything is Alive, an audio fiction that sneaks in actual facts via improvised conversations. Chillag interviews an actor playing an inanimate object - from a can of soda to an elevator. Everything is Alive brings emotions you never thought you’d feel for normally inanimate things. The first episode alone features, once you stop to think about it, an assisted suicide with Chillag drinking the interviewee can of store-brand cola. You learn something, you have a few laughs, and occasionally the show blindsides listeners with emotion. Good times are had by all. everythingisalive.com

INTERNATIONAL PODCAST MONTH (2019 SEASON COMPLETE)

Every year the IPM team, funded only through volunteer work and crowdfunding, organizes dozens of podcasters from across the world to produce a smorgasbord of cool content to help promote podcasting as an industry. Audio drama, nonfiction, creator chats with experts, the IPM feed uploads twice daily every September. WE’RE ALIVE: A STORY OF SURVIVAL (COMPLETED)

There’s a high likelihood you’ve heard of this podcast, and if you haven’t, welcome to one of the greats. We’re Alive: A Story of Survival is an epic zombie survival tale that will remind you why zombies became such a massive cultural touchstone in the late 00s/early 10s. Like all good zombie stories, We’re Alive focuses more on its characters and the rich storytelling possibilities opened up by such a horrifying apocalypse. With a new spinoff series (Goldrush) starting last month, now’s the perfect time to start from the beginning if you’ve never dipped your toes into one of the cornerstones of modern audio drama. werealive.com

SCENIC BYWAYS (BETWEEN SEASONS)

Scenic Byways is 10-part audio drama set in a fractured fantasy version of America. A salt-of-the-earth narrator known only as “the truck driver” tells tall tales of his travels across a seemingly post-apocalyptic and magical United States. Each episode takes place in or near a national park and folds some aspect of old-school Americana in for good measure. Be it the old song “Big Rock Candy Mountain” or lumber company logo-turned-folk hero Paul Bunyan himself. Each episode feels perfectly of the place it’s based on and will leave you wanting to know more about the truck driver and the world he travels.

OCTOBER IS ADOPT A DOG MONTH!

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

BEETHOVEN: Beethoven is a male black Lab mix! He is 7 months old and very much

still a puppy. He’s eager to learn, though - he really, really tries to sit when he’s supposed to! He has gotten along well with a whole lot of other dogs at Cardio for Canines and several outreach events. His brother Mozart has already been adopted. Beethoven’s adoption fee is $110 and includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines,

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT COCOA

Cara McTaggart grew up with lots of animals while living in the country, prone to bringing home stray cats that she would beg her parents to let her keep. Now a mom to two young boys, she has continued to be very pet-friendly, so it was especially difficult to deal with the passing of the family's beloved Boston Terrier - a grieving process that lasted a full year. But eventually McTaggart and her husband decided it was time to rescue another dog and they found the perfect candidate at the VHS where the couple had previously adopted two cats. "We all loved Cocoa right away," McTaggart recalls. "Her prior family had brought her back, but we can't figure out why because she's the most laidback dog there is. It might be because she's very hairy, but it's just a little extra vacuuming - that's nothing to us, because she brings us all so much joy." Cocoa's transition to her new home last July was a little tricky due to her fear of fireworks and storms, but McTaggart wrapped the senior gal up in blankets to calm her down. Now Cocoa's doing great; she even keeps watch over the neighborhood during the day and herds the boys to bed at night. And the cats have grown to tolerate her, too. Another successful adoption!

and more!

MILEY: Miley is a 3-year-old female

calico cat. She’s been waiting on a home since March, and the reason is because she’s quite shy. In a loud, busy room full of visitors, you will find Miley hiding in the comfort of a cubby hole. But oneon-one, once you have her snuggled on your lap in a quiet setting, she’s your best friend! Miley’s adoption fee is $40 and she is already spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated - move-in ready.

LOLA: This is Lola Bunny! She’s

a 1-year-old female American bunny with beautiful salt & pepper coloring. She will likely be a bun that bonds strongly to one person while she gets more used to snuggling. Her adoption fee is $50 and includes her spay & microchip. VHS has recently been overtaken with rabbit surrenders and assisted with

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2019 | OPINION

THE WRITE STUFF with Jonathan Gluff

A Royal Disaster (or “From Fair to Middleton”) I’d be lying if I said I’d never been accused of elitism. (To be fair, though, simply liking things that are off the beaten path does not make one “elitist,” but an attitude of thinking oneself better solely because of it definitely does.) As a result, I’ve worked hard to suppress my knee-jerk disdain towards trends or tastes I simply don’t like or understand. However, one obsession that I do understand but still absolutely despise is the fascination many Americans have with the British royal family; after all, we fought two wars explicitly so we wouldn’t have to care about them. (I may have that wrong…) But first, I’ll further flesh out my hatred of the House of Windsor by comparing it to another useless pop culture golem: Reality television. It’s no secret I despise the scripted fakeness of reality TV, but I try not to bash it as much these days. However, forgiving the fad for catapulting Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, and so many other vapid “famous for being famous” celebrities further into notoriety is a bridge too far for me. Nonetheless, I contend that Paris, Kim, Farrah from Teen Mom, the Jersey Shore crew, and that guy from The Real World who wrestles have contributed more to society than the royal family.

I’m saying intentionally-leaked sextapes are more of a contribution than winning the birth lottery; that being a professional guido is more respectable than wearing garish hats (albeit only slightly); and that maintaining kayfabe is a higher honor than worrying about a prince marrying a commoner. And I dare say that holding Pippa Middleton - a woman best-known for the white dress she wore while carrying her sister’s wedding dress train - in high regard is in line with the thinking of a time period when women’s only career choices were basically homemaker, secretary, or stewardess. It’s a hodgepodge of idol worship, fetishization of outdated monarchical traditions, and perhaps worst of all, measuring a woman’s value by her attractiveness. And it’s that last facet the “woke” kids would call “problematic.” Don’t get me wrong - I love a lot of UK culture (the original Office, Peaky Blinders, anything Matt Berry has ever done, myriad British bands, etc.), so I can somewhat sympathize with Anglophiles. But as for the shallow, sexist undertones of the royal family fandom? Let me sum it up with my best Cockney impression: “Issa bad look, innit?”

This all occurred well before Hardcastle took over the reins so she is not to blame. It's a far cry from

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2019 | OPINION

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD... with Johnny Fletcher

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW... PT. 2 Voracious readers of this column will certainly recall my recent assertion that our troubled world is in dire need of more parachute pants - that its continued existence relies on a return to a more diplomatic approach to disagreements as demonstrated in the 1984 cult classic film Breakin'. Beefs between rivals were settled via danceoffs with each competitor decked out in tight-fitting, zipper-adorned nylon trousers that just screamed "fashion." And as I noted previously, my time as a member of the Funkateers - a much-feared Plaza Park Elementary breakdancing crew - showed me the way towards peaceful resolution. What I didn't have room to tell you is that the world also needs more pimply-faced, orthodontically-challenged rappers of the driver's license age. And I know this because post-Plaza Park, I enrolled at Memorial High School and by sophomore year had hooked up with the Snackin' Crew, a collective of Beastie Boys-obsessed students who documented the trials of teenagehood through lyrics penned mostly during Government and Theology classes - and spewed from mouths full of brackets, braces and retainers during lunch in the cafeteria. For instance, at the time, I was fighting for a promotion to number one

2007 when then-mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel, a Democrat, was able to win with 85% of the vote. An electorate mood can shift like the wind. You see that year after year. For Hardcastle, her primary job is trying to make her party relevant countywide. No more elections without a candidate for mayor. For Parke, his main focus will be to keep those in power who are already there and make inroads elsewhere; dare I say the Missy Mosby held 2nd Ward council seat? Hardcastle already has a good start as a lot of

doubles on the tennis team. But rather than hatch a 2019-esque plot to violently take out my competition, I instead feverishly scribbled down a rap about my racket, the Wilson Composite Pro, and set about striking terror in the hearts of my fellow players as they innocently munched on their PB&Js: "Well, I've played in rain and I've played in snow / But nothing can stop my Composite Pro / It's got a frame of iron and strings of steel / Take one good look and you know it's for real / Now just ask anyone who's played me before / They're too embarrassed to mention the score / They just stare at the ground, shaking their head / And wonder why they don't have my racket instead / My Composite Pro!" Spoiler alert, I got the promotion and my Snackin' Crew credentials were swiftly upgraded. Yes, Delta Snack (my rap handle) was surely going places and shed no blood in the process. So let this be a lesson to all the kids out there: put down the guns and pick up a pen. But first, put your parachute pants on - which feature no end of pockets for said pen - and start popping and locking your way to a peaceful existence...

Vanderburgh County is already Democrat. She's just going to have to get them to the polls somehow, someway. The 4th Ward alone could be enough to overturn any city/countywide election. In 2011, Mayor Winnecke's first time running, the Dems turned on Rick Davis after he defeated Troy Tornatta in a heated primary. Despite having his own party basically disown him, Davis got 46% of the vote as traditionally Democratic voters showed up to the polls and almost pushed him over the finish line. So, the possibility of another Democratic takeover is there for sure.

Parke needs to be aware of this by not playing like he's ahead à la Hillary Clinton in 2016. Keeping up a good ground game, out-raising the Dems (as happens every year), and recruiting electable candidates could be just what the doctor ordered for Parke and the GOP. With this likely being Winnecke's last time running, the GOP needs to stay focused and remember the possible open seat in 2023. The jury is still out on if Hardcastle can compete with the GOP machine that is Parke. Perhaps we'll see her capabilities in 2020.

THE SPY NETFLIX

Netflix has a new six-part limited miniseries called The Spy, a true life spy story, starring Sacha Baron Cohen. Best known for his comedic turns in films like Borat, he takes on a far more serious and dramatic role here as Eli Cohen, an Israeli intelligence agent who spent years as a deep undercover spy in the 1960s in Syria. As tensions heightened between Israel and Syria, the National Intelligence Agency (called Mossad) decided they needed to train someone quickly in order to collect secret and confidential information in Syria. With merely two weeks of espionage training, Eli Cohen transforms into his new identity under the name of Kamel Amin Thaabet, a Syrian businessman. The series, written and directed by Gideon Raff, creator of Showtime’s Homeland, is good; the scope of Sacha Baron Cohen’s work in The Spy is luminous. Even a dodgy accent by one of the actors playing an Israeli agent can't derail things. Naturally, Cohen’s accent is spot-on. - Sarah Ruch

GLOW NETFLIX

For a brief moment, close your eyes and picture yourself in 1984. What do you see? Dallas on the TV set? Popped Izod collars? Members Only jackets? Pink aerobic leotards with turquoise leg warmers? Move over Family Ties because Netflix’s GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling) is taking over the 1980s. This Netflix series takes on the female wrestling entertainment industry similar to the likes of Hulk Hogan and Jake “The Snake” Roberts. A casting call for “unconventional women” hungry for an acting job brings forth a motley crew of diverse women. They all show up at a random Los Angeles gym to audition. GLOW stars Alison Brie (Ruth) and Betty Gilpen (Debbie) as two of the dynamic wrestlers, and Marc Maron as Sam Sylvia, the crass and sardonic director of the wrestling show. The writing is intelligent and will bring you to overwhelming belly laughs. - Sarah Ruch

THE HATEFUL EIGHT DVD/BLU-RAY

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film carries the similar themes of his work: gritty characters, guts, and blood spatter. The movie takes place in the winter of Wyoming. It’s years after the Civil War, and tensions still run high between the Yankees and Confederates. A stagecoach is on its way to Red Rock carrying John Ruth (Kurt Russel), a bounty hunter and his prisoner, Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh). They pick up two hijackers on the way: Major Marcus Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), another bounty hunter, and Chris Mannox, a former Confederate also travelling to Red Rock. In order to wait out the oncoming blizzard, the stagecoach stops at Minnie’s Haberdashery where travelers can take shelter. Upon arrival, the four meet up with the other characters. The setting of the movie carries the common motif of a group of people trapped in one space eventually evolving into classic Darwinism: survival of the fittest. The conclusion of the film is an unexpected twist that is expected from Tarantino. - Sarah Ruch

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2019 | MUSIC REVIEWS

EZRA FURMAN Twelve Nudes Bella Union Twelve Nudes is a wonderful example of an album that shows its musical roots without leaning on them so much it becomes derivative. “I Wanna Be Your Girlfiend” begs to join the pantheon of slow, twangy rock songs found in bar jukeboxes across the country. It begs to be played with slightly too much reverb in a poorly lit room. “Blown” lives up to its name, mixed to sound like absolute garbage in the best of ways. Furman’s raw emotion acts as the binding agent that allows Twelve Nudes to jump subgenres seamlessly. She doesn’t have time to stick in one place too long while she has “too many demons to fight off.” From the killer cover art to the final track, this album demands your full attention. Gavin Gaddis

VARIOUS ARTISTS Rocketman (Music from the Motion Picture) Interscope The problem with Rocketman is endemic with all jukebox musicals: the guy they cast to play the legendary singer is also the best singer in the movie. “I Want Love” is one of Elton John’s best compositions, yet when divided amongst four actors talk-singing it feels like a bad beat poem. When Taron Egerton’s on the mic things are peachy keen; when any of the other actors are given a front row seat… I advise skipping the cover of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." That said, there are some covers that rival Elton John’s original songs and add fun new dimensions (“Honky Cat” is a five-star cover by itself). The new duet for John and Egerton is worth the price of admission alone, though. - Gavin Gaddis

THE FUTUREHEADS Powers Nul Records Thanks to the miracle that is the internet I can find pop punk-y albums that actually dare to do punk things that the more commercially-viable bands wouldn’t dare touch with a 30-foot pole. Yeah, Good Charlotte and the like owe their careers to The Sex Pistols et al. but modern pop-punk usually skews more Disney. God forbid a singer intentionally blow out a mic with distortion on a chorus. The Futureheads’ Powers fits the bill nicely with imperfect takes, creative mixing and distortion - all delicious glimmers of creativity amongst a Spotify streaming dashboard flooded with spitshined corporate polish. “Listen, Little Man!” is a wonderful, plodding song that wouldn’t play anywhere other than a college station, and even then only when the faculty advisor isn’t paying attention. - Gavin Gaddis

THE REGRETTES How Do You Love? Warner Records The newest album by The Regrettes is here and it’s not taking prisoners. I was sold from the very first creative decision: starting How Do You Love? with a poem titled “Are you in love?” From there on it’s a whirlwind of powerful lyrics and 90s-tastic electric guitar. The best compliment I can summon to give this album is that it sounds exactly like a song that would’ve played over the final shot of a really good episode of Gilmore Girls. Lorelai has reconciled a multi-episode arc of being on the outs with her daughter, something mildly nice happened in the town, and the song “I Dare You” fades up as the camera rolls back and up on a slow crane shot. - Gavin Gaddis

CATAFALQUE Catafalque Self-Released You will either get Catafalque or you won’t - I don’t think there's a middle ground with this act. Catafalque is an extreme metal duo that essentially plays harsh noise across seven songs on their debut album that clocks in at almost 70 minutes. One song is over 20 minutes long. Caution: do not check out Catafalque unless certain frequencies have been eroded from your sense of hearing. This album is sick and deafening, and I think it’s really cool. If you like drone, ambient, or anything harsh and heavy, then you've found a new favorite band. I find this album sounds best when you need to drown out obnoxious coworkers and focus on your work. When the pains of existence are worse than the pains of tinnitus, Catafalque is here for you. Check them out on Bandcamp or Spotify. - Russ Finn

PEAER A Healthy Earth Tiny Engines

Blues with Bragin

A few months ago, I reviewed the re-release of Peaer’s debut album, The Eyes Sink into the Skull. If you’ve kept up with them since, you’ll know that it was essentially a promo to build up steam for A Healthy Earth, the band's third full-length. Across these two albums and their 2016 self-titled sophomore release, Peaer showcase a brand of emo-adjacent indie math rock that can sound technical and dreamy, carefree and calculated. A Healthy Earth sets itself apart by being their finest and most diverse album. Peaer expand their sound and dip into pop and folk territories with their most focused songwriting yet. A Healthy Earth is a colorful entry into Peaer’s catalogue and one of the year’s coolest indie rock albums. - Russ Finn

GRANDMA’S BOYS Oakley Self-Released Grandma’s Boys are a four-piece band from Louisville, Kentucky who employ punk guitar riffs, anthemic pop hooks, raprock bridges, and prog transitions over the course of five songs on their debut EP Oakley. Though the band ties themselves to no particular genre, they sound a lot like the fun ska bands of the 90s (no horns though, think more Sublime than Mighty Mighty Bosstones). I had the pleasure of seeing the Boys decked out in full Grandma gear at a house show and it was a blast. Please listen to their song “Craft Mac,” which may or may not be a euphemism for drugs. If not, the song is literally about buying illegal macaroni & cheese from the cops. Need I say more? - Russ Finn

CASH BOX KINGS Hail to the Kings! Alligator Records Chicago blues royalty, the Cash Box Kings kick off their latest collection with “It Ain’t No Fun” a song about a man whose woman is cheating on him. Billy Flynn’s guitar seems to straddle the line between classic blues and surf music. “The Wine Talkin’” features a duet with Oscar Wilson and Shemika Copeland singing about how the fruit of the vine causes more trouble than other beverages. “Smoked Jowl Blues” begins with a great harmonica riff from Joe Nosek and Wilson sings about his woman’s prowess in the kitchen. Nosek’s excellent harmonica complements his lead vocals on “Back Off,” a tune about a man who wants distance. “Poison in My Whiskey” deals with a man who thinks his woman is trying to kill him. Nosek and Wilson duet on “Joe, You Ain’t From Chicago” about how Nosek’s upbringing disqualifies him from claiming status as a Windy City native. “Hunchin’ On My Baby” sees Nosek return to lead vocals as he sings about another man trying to steal his woman. - Paul Bragin

A Case of the blues is on Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on 91.5-FM WUEV, online at wuev.org and on the TuneIn radio app.

NEWS4U OCTOBER 2019 | BEER REVIEWS

OCTOBER BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. YAZOO PILSNER

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

This is one of those beers that will convert even the staunchest anti-craft beer drinker. I strongly encourage any fan of the big-name breweries to give a sixer of these a chance; there’s no hoppiness to be found, just malty goodness. Slight undertones of cereal and corn make this as Midwestern as a brew can be, while the fuller flavor and much cleaner, crisper finish remind the macrobrews what a pilsner should taste like. It’s quality you can taste.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head rests on this beer when poured in a pilsner glass. The first smell hits the nose with hops, but balances out with malt notes. The balance continues during the initial tasting as well as a nice burst of carbonation. This is a great beer for everyday drinking. Pair it with a variety of dishes like salads, chicken, fried catfish, bratwurst, or a milder cheese like a white Cheddar from Vermont.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

It pours a nice straw yellow with a bubbly white head. The smell is of bread with a malt character. The taste is the same, a light malt with a little bit of hop taste. It's a light body with a nice amount of carbonation to it. Overall, it's a nice beer but nothing overwhelming - just a little better than average.

METAZOA PUPPY SLUMBER PARTY

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

Indy’s Metazoa Brewing certainly isn’t afraid to take chances with their beers. Enter their Puppy Slumber Party, a self-described, uh, “peanut butter milk stout.” Yeah… Honestly, though, it’s not terrible. It’s like dunking a Reese’s cup in chocolate milk, then washing it down with Guinness (draught, not those bottled or canned abominations). Trust me, it’s better than it sounds. This is easily the most unique beer I’ve ever tried, and it’s definitely worth trying if you’re an adventurous drinker.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thick tan head crowns this black stout when poured in an English pub glass and never totally disappears. The scents of roasted malt and some peanut butter fill the nose. The roasted malt flavors dominate the first sip, with enough peanut butter coming through to give a pleasant taste without overpowering the beer. This is a great dessert beer. Pair it with your favorite dessert with peanut butter and chocolate or Reese’s peanut butter cups.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 5

This is just about my favorite beer. It's a dark beer with a sweet stout flavor and 6.4% ABV. You can taste the peanut butter flavor but it's not overwhelming. It also has a nice chocolate flavor. This is in no way a session beer but I could drink a few of these. I also like the pint can, and the name made me snicker.

BRECKENRIDGE OKTOBERFEST

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

I like to make fun of the annual “pumpkin spice EVERYTHING” trend of the last few years as much as any other, but I have to confess that I’m guilty of loving the beer equivalent: Oktoberfest. Granted, a traditional Märzen like this doesn’t have much in the way of pumpkin flavor; instead, we’re greeted with notes of malt, toasted sweet bread, and just a hint of hops to balance the sweetness. Smooth and refreshing, it’s a perfect fall beer.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thin white head evaporates quickly when pouring the beer in a traditional beer mug. The nose boasts a healthy amount of sweet malt scents. The malt stays during the tasting, but receives some balancing from hops also. People who like German style beers need to try this during the crisp autumn months. Pair it with cheeses like Gruyère, Fontina or Comté, German dishes like roasted pork, bratwurst with sauerkraut, or soft pretzels.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours bright light copper in color. The aroma is faint with very little toasted grain. The taste is clean with slight toasted bread notes and a hint of earthy hops. A pretty solid beer that will treat you right during the month of October when you're in the mood for something with substance.

URBAN ARTIFACT THE GADGET

JONATHAN GLUFF - 2.5

This may be billed as a “Midwest Fruit Tart Ale,” but there’s no discernible ale flavor to be found. In fact, the operative word in that description is “tart,” because this thing is downright sour.

There are two things I’ll give this drink credit for: The raspberries and blackberries certainly are prominent, and it’s got an 8.3% ABV. So if sour fruit concoctions are your thing, this drink is for you; all others may want to look elsewhere.

carbonation make it an interesting choice for autumn. Drink it with fruity breakfast dishes or add it as an ingredient in desserts like blackberry cobbler.

PAUL BRAGIN - 2.75

This is a purple beverage that I can’t really call a beer. I gave it a three because it's exactly what the label specifies: raspberry and blackberry fruit tart. More than anything, this drink reminds me of when I was a kid eating sour candy. The taste is as advertised, but I couldn’t finish it.

A thick pink head tops this dark red beer when poured in a glass. The scent contains strong notes of raspberries and blackberries. The sour flavors of the fruits used during brewing spread on the tongue with the first sip and remain in the long finish. The high alcohol content and low
