Parrotheads Rejoice! Parrots of the Carribean

PARROTS OF THE CARIBBEAN

T

he ideal paradise is not just a cheeseburger for the many Jimmy Buffet fans all over America. It is a tropical way of life accented by fresh margaritas, swaying palm trees, and often a multihued article of swimwear. Don a flashy pair of shades and the stage has been set to enter the world of bright steel drums, mellow acoustic guitar, and catchy vonick cals. While it is unfortunate for hardcore Parrotheads durcholz Staff Writer that Mr. Buffet himself will not be visiting the Tri-State area, the self-proclaimed “#1 Jimmy Buffet tribute act in the country… Bar None” will be. On lead vocals Dave Albrecht is literally a man who wears many hats. His physical stage presence ranges from a laid back pirate to a suave boat captain. His first gig was an Akyroyd impersonator in a nine-piece Blues Brothers cover band in Dayton, Ohio at the age of 30. However, his musical inclinations began when he bought his first harmonica at the age of 18. After the Blues Brothers act he performed in Las Vegas before his appreciation of Buffet’s took hold and he gathered his present band to form Parrots of the Caribbean. Jeff Cline on guitar has tropical blood running through his veins. With direct ties to the island of Hawaii he brings a musical style of blended cultures to the band’s sound. Cline was an army “brat” whose interest in guitar sparked when he was 16 years old. Around the same time he started his first band. Since then Cline has played a multitude of different genres and proves to be a vital part of the Parrots. K e n n y Rice on keyboards entered the world of music very early in his life. He began playing since he was eight years old. Rice is formally trained and not only is a master of all varieties of music on the keyboard but is skilled in the technical aspects of music as well. Rice was a member of three rock bands: The Hathaways, Up with People, and Flyweils. He has performed on major television networks and has opened for big name acts such as Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, and Willie Nelson. Gary Rigmaiden on bass has been playing for 25 years and is an original member of the Parrots. He has a strong blues influence and is a proud Louisianan. Besides bass his interests and talents include songwriting and classical guitar. He has lived in exotic and culturally rich locales such as Brazil and Spain so it gives him a deeper understanding of Buffet’s music and style while injecting his own brand of Cajun flavor.

PARROTS OF THE CARIBBEAN

Greg Martin is not exactly a novice in the music world either. He has been playing drums for 34 years. His 10-piece drum set gets quite a workout between the Parrots and then six other bands he plays with including Arch Rival and Jake & Elwood’s Blues Revue. Martin has lived in Indiana among three other states and his drumming influences include John Bonham and Neil Peart. His other musical influences include Frank Zappa and ZZ Top.

JIMMY CHURCH BAND

R&B hotness can also be found this month at FA5 with Nashville’s Jimmy Church Band on the 10th.

The Parrots of the Caribbean will get a chance to flash their feathers on the Owensboro riverfront as a part of the Friday After 5 event which goes on through to early September. Other bands set to perform in the month of July are Larry Maglinger’s Tribute to Rod Stewart Show, Caribou Band, The Jimmy Church Band, and Black Widow. (In sequential order.) Open Season on the Greens:

How to Keep their Keepers Happy

B nick durcholz

Staff Writer

y now the golfers of the Tri-State have logged more than a few miles on the course. Swings have become more balanced and consistent, trash has been talked, beer has been drunk, and skin has been bronzed or burned. It is prime time for golf. However, not many golfers stop to think about who maintains the courses or who makes sure ice is available for coolers. With personal experience behind the scenes of a golf course and knowledge of the tedious, particular work which goes into it a little insight is on hand to make sure a pleasant time is had by all. These people take pride in providing the best golfing experience possible but if this investment isn’t reciprocated by respect and gratitude heads will roll, if not physically than verbally. Here is how to stay in their good graces. Happy rounds!

W

hen you say “Bob E v a n s ” of course your next choice of words is “down on the farm.” When you visit momkat Bob Evans, you can Contributor rest assured the best surprise is no surprise at all. You get the same goodness, whatever the state you’re in. It’s a staple of American travel in the Midwest. Mark, the kitchen manager, explained that in Owensboro 35 - 40% of their business consists of breakfast takers, morning, noon, or night. And what would a visit to Bob Evans be without a sampling of their biscuits, gravy and sausage – their sausage being the very thing that put them on the map. Melt in your mouth buttermilk biscuits with some of the best gravy this side of the Mississippi; for a moment, one can imagine this is one of life’s pleasures this side of heaven. Eggs over medium made it picture perfect. My dining companion chose the tender strawberry crepes with yummy vanilla cream cheese filling and deep fruity strawberry sauce. After our “breakfast” we moved on to lunch. Mark brought us three new menu items that have only been available for a month. We started with the Country Fair Cheese Bites. Lightly battered, fried white cheddar cheese bites served with marinara sauce are an excellent way to start a meal. The Country Fair Cheese Bites are better than other cheese appetizers because they are not gooey inside; you can take a bite and it stays solid. And, it is definitely not processed cheese. Second, we tried the Loaded Baked Potato Bites. Breaded and fried potato bites stuffed with cheddar cheese, bacon and served with buttermilk ranch dressing, they weren’t conducive to my diet but were worth the cheat. A baked potato in a finger food, they were delectable, particularly for a potato connoisseur. Finally, we tried the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Fries. Lightly battered and fried, the apple pie fries were dusted with powdered sugar and served with caramel dipping sauce. Reminiscent of old time apple pies Grandma used to make, the caramel sauce added just the right compliment. • 12 •

At that point, we were almost stuffed from the breakfast and appetizers but we happily moved to our entrees. My lunch entree was a Cranberry Pecan Chicken Salad - one of their most popular lunch choices. Lots of texture; loaded with honey roasted pecans, bleu cheese, dried cranberries, roasted chicken and greens, tossed with sweet Italian dressing. Excellent combination, bursting with flavor. My other dining companion’s entree was Open Faced Roast Beef which consisted of slow roasted beef over Texas Toast smothered with hearty beef gravy with the real deal mashed potatoes. For those that don’t want to be adventurous, there’s the old tried-and-true All American Angus burgers to choose from: Bacon Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Old Fashioned Steak Burger. Bob Evans is fantastic coffee for the coffee drinker. I happened to notice Mark meandering from table to table checking with the customers for their satisfaction. I was impressed by the friendly, personal service. In fact, when they say the home of homestyle, they aren’t kidding! Bob Evans is a great family restaurant – you might even skip grandma’s Sunday dinner and take her to Bob Evans with you. Bob Evans is located at 3123 Hwy 54; you can reach them at 683-3515.

Now & When

Managing Editor

ristling. An interesting-looking word, that. Copious. Also a curious word, especially when you stare at it for a few hours. Don’t stare at either word for a few hours, by the way. It’s worse than looking directly into the sun. Why begin with such silliness? Because both “bristling” and “copious” might be appropriate to describe the roster of events happening this summer. Lots of things to do. Many decisions to be made. Must. Make. Up. Mind. How? Try out “Now and When.” We’ll take a look at some of the extra items of interest this month (Now), and some previews of topics we’ll cover in further depth next month (When). Violà!

NOW I:

English Park is the site of the biggest Independence Day party around these parts, the Celebration of the American Spirit. Since we’re all patriots, we’ll just dispense with the fluff and like good Americans, get right to the meat of the matter: Be at English Park at 6 p.m. to kick off the evening with music by local folk musician and familiar face, Heath Eric. He’ll perform in advance of a rollicking show by the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, with lots of heart-soaring flourishes and trills to set the mood for a massive fireworks display set to begin over the big river at 9. Bring a suitable seat and have a blast. The Celebration of the American Spirit is sponsored by the City of Owensboro, Time Warner Cable and WBKR.

WHEN I:

Country music hottie (the woman who works in the office next to mine said that, not me. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I mean, to each his or her own. What goes on behind closed doors is… all right enough. Let’s start again). Country music sensation Jason Aldean will bring a truckfull of hits like “She’s Country,” “Why,” “Johnny Cash” and more to the Big O Music Fest at Reid’s Orchard on August 1. Gates open at noon, with music set to start at 1 p.m. Openers include the likes of Colt Ford, Tabor Dame, Chris Young, Scott Lindsey, and more. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com or through the website bigomusicfest. com.

NOW II:

To whet one’s appetite for all the fanfare and patriotic indulgences that come along with Independence Day, why not catch some 4th on the 3rd? Panther Creek Park will host their Family Freedom Firework Festival on Friday the third. Nice ring to that, no? Kids can jump around in those big inflatable house thingies and grown ups can enjoy food and music, and all can enjoy the fireworks display once it gets plenty dark.

NOW III:

The Dust Bowl is thought of as some John Steinbeck-penned, hungry, thirsty, “head west, yon Linkhorn” sort of movie that added insult to injury to a Depression-stricken nation. That it was. But here in Owensboro it’s also known as one of the finest exhibitions of basketball in the area. This year’s Bowl will be at Kendall-Perkins Park July 17 through 25 and will feature pick-and-rolls, back door cuts, alleyoops, dunks, wicked crossovers, sweet jumpers and more from all ages. Just because the high school, college and pro seasons are over doesn’t mean a fella can’t get his (or her) hoop on, right?

WHEN II:

Remember Murder She Wrote? Agatha Christie? Um, Scream? Scratch that last one. In fact, focus more on the second name, because the late Ms. Christie shall be conjured once again at RiverPark Center’s International Mystery Writers Festival, a gathering of top talent in the page-turner business and fans of the unknown, the who-done-it and the detectives whose prowess solve the most complex crimes. This year’s Festival will be from August 11 through 16, and we’ll be covering it in more depth in the August edition of this publication. Or will we? Tune in next time to find out…

SOuNDBOARD

L

earn more about your local and regional bands here, straight from the Sound Board. And since we’re recording straight from the board, we’re getting the best sounds possible. This month’s argument-starting questions are:

1. Gibson or Fender? Or neither? Why? 2. Start your own label or get signed by a megacorpfactory label?

Criss Cheatham

(solo, August Christopher) 1. That's a very good question. I lived and died by the Strat up until recently. Steve Sheroan plays a Strat style guitar (actually it's a handmade Tom Anderson, but is similar to a Fender Strat) and the two of us having similar tone for so many years influenced me to pick up a Les Paul. I hated it at first, it's so heavy and completely different to play, but the tone is very big. Now, after only 4-5 months, I reach for my Les Paul more than I do the Strat, even on 3-piece gigs when I'm the only guitar player! I just really enjoy the warmth and the testosterone of the Paul. If you play both, you will have to make major adjustments to your tone when switching. I personally have a BOSS EQ pedal with the lows turned down and the volume up a bit that I only use when playing the Strat. I still have to make changes on my amp when switching too sometimes. It's worth it, though! (FYI, I would also like to add that I play a Mexican Strat and Epiphone Paul. That doesn't mean they are crap! They are older, great wood, and have good intonation; I have literally spent hundreds and hundreds replacing hardware, setups, etc... but am not ashamed to say they are great guitars. So... don't go spend $2500 on a guitar until you’re Slash, OK? - and then it's free anyhow). So the short answer is BOTH. That's what made so many 2-guitar bands sound so big - each guy playing a different guitar. The Strat against the Les Paul is a GREAT mix. Pearl Jam is the first band that comes to mind. 2. Again, both have huge upsides and downsides. When AC sells a $10 record, AC gets $10. That's a big deal; indie labels maintain that mentality to an extent. Lower budget, less overhead, artist gets more control and ultimately ends up with more money per unit. When I played with Bomshel (Curb Records), the label spent almost half a million on the band before selling a single record. When you have a major deal, you only get a few points on every unit (sometimes less than 20 cents per record) and you STILL have to pay the label back everything they spent on you out of that income! Artists sometimes have to sell 500,000 units before they even get paid at all! Oh, yeah - and artistic control? Good luck... • 14 •

3. Vinyl or CD? 4. Is Neil Peart God? Why or why not? Then again, small labels can only do so much. The record won't sound as good, the chances of BIG fame are much smaller, including radio, television, etc. The majors can REALLY make things happen. I've also been told that less than 5% of bands that DO get signed to majors even get their record in stores! Those are not good odds, but at least you have SOME odds. I would love to sign with a major if I was guaranteed some artistic integrity, a solid paycheck, and ownership in the brand and product. I like the way we do it. We sell our stuff on the internet and from the stage. We have minimal distribution, spend all the money ourselves to make the record, but when we sell 1,000 copies, we make $10,000. That doesn't mean I wouldn't love to have a top ten video on VH1... 3. Vinyl - no question, not even close! The only down side is that you’re limited in the amount of music you can put on a record. Analog reigns over digital in EVERY situation, PERIOD! 4. First off, GOD is GOD, no musician, actor, athlete, or human being (other than Jesus Christ). Secondly, Neil Peart is super overrated (in my humble opinion). The guy overplays on everything, can't keep time, and grooves about as white as Opie. Take him out of his comfort zone - like having him play jazz on the tribute to Buddy Rich record, AWFUL! Most rock drummers are overrated. They typically represent a small handful of people who got lucky and never really learned the instrument. There are exceptions, though - I think that Carter from DMB is great, Alex Van Halen is great, John Bonham is good, Phil Collins is good... But, NO! Lars Ulrich (SUCK!), Tommy Lee (SUCK!), Criss Cheatham (SUCK!). I did an entire segment dedicated to this on my radio show "Welcome To The Big Letdown" on 97X here in Owensboro (currently on hiatus) explaining many of the ins and outs of rock drumming. I went on to talk about my 5 favorites including Steve Gadd, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Percaro and more. (All past radio episodes are online free at augustchristopher.com)

Namaste

1. If I had to choose, it'd be Fender... why? Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc., need I say more? But I have fallen in love with my semi-hollow body Hamer Artist series, and would trade it for no other guitar ever. 2. Big mega labels are dying/rebirthing into new formats. Small indie labels have just as good a chance to help a band now, if not better because they aren’t spread too thin. 3. CD is obviously the smartest marketing deci-

sion. Sure, vinyl is cool, but it’s a novelty now. CDs are practically a novelty in their own right. I say mp3s over both, if the goal is to be heard by as many people as possible (why else make music if not to be heard?). 4. I’m not touching that one… hehe.

kaptain Crunch & the Cereal killers

1. Well we love what Fender and Gibson put out, I mean, what’s not to love, but we also love the stuff from Hamer, Music Man and PRS. Its really does seem that you get what you pay for in the guitar world and that usually means the top stuff ($1000 to $3500) is all very good. Currently we use some of the top stuff from Fernandes, Music Man, Devlin and yes, even a Fender for our sound. Unfortunately we feel a good axe shouldn't be the price of a Buick. (PS: Gibson and Fender Company guys, if you’re listening....we could be easily swayed). 2. Well the indie labels are everywhere! Every dude with a computer in his basement seems to have one. They come up to us at every show with, "man you guys rock! Dudes, you really need to hook up with us… Man." I know it's not about the money... but we just want a REAL LABEL to pull up in front of the house with a Provost Coach and a dump truck full of money and say, "come on guys get in...." 3. Wow, that’s a hard one. But, we'd have to say CDs. We like to think we're all about quality... vinyl kills CDs in that respect, but we can't make vinyl out of our basement. So until we figure how to hook up a Scully Vinyl Lathe to our home computer, CDs. 4. God may be strong word, but he's definitely is one of the founding fathers of the fast-fill, edgy drum solos and beats that you can hear in many songs today. Dare we use the term "Son of" ? www.News4UOwensboro.com • Owensboro July 2009

T

Dirt Fashion he well-kempt Dirt Fashion will be jamming out at the Lions Club Fair this month, on Thursday, July 16 to be exact. To learn more about the band, I checked in with Rollie Pike to see what makes Dirt Fashion so dirty.

Tell us about the band how you got together, your style and where the dirty name came from... dylan gibbs Managing Editor We are brand new. We are all local guys. I called around to some talented guys I thought would fit the part for this band, and they were all interested. David Morris, Ryan Aud, Chris Embry, Logan Boarman, Terry Lanham, and myself, Rollie Pike. Sometimes the best picker is not always the best guy for the band. That was the key, not that we were all instrumental specialist, but this group of guys each had something to offer in their own way from talents to ideas to creating that would enable us to put on a show with variety and flavor to accommodate young, teen, middle age, etc. I told them I kinda wanted to be like the modern day Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Hence, that’s where the name came from. We’re pretty country strong, but we’re gonna try to have a few different flavors. We’re gonna be like the weather in KY, if you don’t like it, stick around, chances are it’ll change pretty quick. We’re gonna play fast, slow, medium, and rare. No matter what we play though, it will probably come out in “Dirt Fashion.” What’s your background? What are some of the band(s) you’ve worked with? Basically, we all have just had a love for music all our lives. Mostly, the God given talents that have been passed down through the gene pool is where all this derived from…Terry Lanham started playing music when he was a young boy traveling around doing the bluegrass thing with his Grandfather. Logan Boarman got his first set of drums when he was a young boy, something his Father at the time wasn’t sure of, but has no regrets now. Chris Embry played some electric guitar in his teens, but unselfishly picked up the bass for us. Cause that ‘s what kinda guy he is….Ryan Aud picked up piano at an early age. He’s a computer guy so naturally, he’s our keyboard man. David Morris started playing at an early age, mostly bluegrass, and then country, and then whatever you want him to play. If he fell and bust his leg open, all kinds of musical notes would fall out. Some that haven’t been invented yet I believe. And me, I started trying to dance like Elvis on the kitchen table with a broom in my hand for a guitar. Since then, I have always loved to sit down with my guitar and pick around and sing. Biggest musician influences? Of course our Pappaws and mammaws, our Moms and Dads, our uncles and aunts, Nit-

ty Gritty Dirt Band ,Vassar Clements, John Mcuen, Ricky Skaggs, Anybody’s that ever carried a tune in a 5 gallon bucket pretty much! What are the 5 greatest albums of all time? Let’s start an argument here... Live to Five – Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Live in London – Ricky Skaggs Together Again/My Heart Skips a Beat – Buck Owens ****Honestly, we are always song searching so much for songs that will fit “dirt fashion,” it’s hard to get through one entire album or in our case, cassette, or 8 track , before we’re kicking it out and on to the next one. For the musicians and techie-types out there - what’s your setup like. What are your weapons of choice, instrumentally speaking? If a little amp is all we got…That’s all we got… If a big fancy set up is all we got, we’ll play on that to. Plain Simple, plain dirt fashion. Drums, Bass, Fiddle, steel guitar, mandolin, keyboard, and guitars. Our motto is “simple but good.” What are people in for at a Dirt Fashion show? There’s not many bands out there playing what we’re playing. People that come out to a Dirt Fashion show are going to find themselves in good company and having a good time no matter if they are 5 or 82…

he reaction to the changing of the guard here on the Kid’s Page was swift and, if I may use a hackneyed word, awesome: “Ur cool. i never thaught about a dad writing kids things. Keep it up. (sic)” There were other emails, but none quite as eloquent. It’s time for dads to stand up and take the reigns! We can plan a day out as well – or dare I say better – than our wives or significant others. While I certainly want to promote organized events in some fashion, I also want dads to take their kids to the river side to throw rocks out as far as possible. To get stuck dylan gibbs in the mud on some half-forgotten back road just as it’s about to get dark. To Managing Editor play mini golf and cheat on the score together. To go fishing and catch nothing but logs, twigs and lightning bugs. We discover we’re still kids too when we do these things. And we make an indelible impression on our daughters and sons; they remember more than you imagine, I think. This is starting to sound preachy, and I’m not man enough to mount a soapbox about anything (except for Civil War and Lincoln trivia – if there’s anything geeky I’ve managed to latch onto, it’s those two items). So let’s proceed to the happenings, the what to do, the where, the when and maybe even the why:

A reminder:

Pools are open, and have been for a month or so. It’s been like Louisiana hot around here lately, so remember to support your local parks and drop the kids off at the pool to cool off, have fun and stay out of your hair for a few hours. Admission to the pools at Combest, Cravens the Legion and Kendall-Perkins Spray Park is only $3.25; hours are noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with an added Tuesday night swim from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday hours are noon to 6 p.m.; Sunday’s hours of operation are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Flicks:

Back in the early and mid 20th century, movie houses were a place people went to not only see flicks, get their news and catch cool cartoons, but also to cool off. Many theaters back then had air conditioning, which they would often advertise as prominently as the movies themselves. Today we take air conditioning for granted, much more so than our heartier grand- and great-grandparents. But the flicks are still rolling, and Malco’s Kids Summer Film Fest continues through the end of the month, every Tuesday and Wednesday through the 29th. Call 683-2123 for extra info.

Americana on the diamond:

Owensboro’s own KITTY League team, the Oilers, are busiest this month. They play practically every day of the month, and the caliber of talent is impressive; the players are typically college players looking to expand their game, mostly for the love of it. And that’s the best kind of ball – watching players play because they love it, not because their agent gets a cut of their gazillion dollar checks and they sit out a game because they have a hangnail. Chautauqua Park’s the location, and the home games are listed in News 4U’s entertainment guide. For a few bucks you can kick back with a cold brew, keep your own score, munch a hot dog, and show your kids

that baseball is more than hulking millionaires, Fantasy Leagues and controversy. Like it should be.

Out of town fun:

Is your son or daughter a budding young geologist or paleontologist? Want to take a short day trip? Check out Falls of the Ohio State Park, a place where the distant past is exposed in weathered limestone outcroppings, bluffs and flat spaces, all along the big and beautiful Ohio River. How old are the fossils lying embedded in the stone at the Falls? 380-some-odd millions years old, according to analysis. The fossil beds have the distinction of being the largest naturally-exposed Devonian Period fossil beds in the world. Views in and around the Falls area are impressive and serene. Even if you’re not into fossils and cool-looking rocks, simply picnicking in the area and enjoying the scenery make for enough enjoyment. But it’s the fossils that keep visitors coming back. You really have to see the limestone up close and in person to really get the stark impression that nature provides us with some wonderful, unique features. And in the case of the Falls of the Ohio, these natural wonders are virtually right in our back yard. Head east toward Louisville on I-64. Stay on 64 into Clarksville, Indiana and catch I-65 south toward Louisville. Take the last exit before the bridge and follow the signs. The Park is open seven days at week, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Interpretive Center on site offers an in-depth educational experience about the Falls, and it’s open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1p.m. to 5 p.m. More information about the Park can be obtained by calling 812-280-9970.

Have a family-friendly event coming up? Send notice to editor@news-4u.com on or before the 15th of the month prior to the month of the event.

N4U: How has your approach to recording an album changed from Dysfunction to Illusion of Progress? AL: Honestly it really hasn’t changed that much. We go in there and write songs right on nick the spot and record them reladurcholz tively quickly and pretty much Staff Writer move through the process relatively quickly-it’s the way we’ve always done it. We’ve never had the songs all done and ready and polished except for our first record. Other than that we’ve gone into the studio with basically nothing and put it all together and recorded it and really get to hear it as the songs they are when we’re finished. So there is no real structure to it reallyyou just go in and do the damn thing so to speak? Yeah! Not so non-chalantly, it’s business when we go in there but yeah that’s basically the deal. Could you name any one person that helped you succeed as an artist? I just think it was everyone feeling like I was f*ck*ng useless. I remember a conversation I had with an uncle of mine he said, “You know this music thing is great for a hobby but what are you going to do for a job?” He has since apologized for that comment but it was feelings, sentiments, and comments that kept me going. Is there any story behind the track “Home?” “Home” is about the whole time that we… all of a sudden it went from we were home and we were weekend warrior musicians and all of a sudden we were ripped from home and sent to L.A. and everything was foreign and unrecognizable. How would you describe the importance of music in your life? It’s very important to me; it’s the way I’m able to get things off my chest that I wouldn’t be very good at doing in day to day life. I found that I

tend to express myself a lot better with certain things in songs. Describe the importance of your band in your life as a whole? They’re what got me here man, it’s kind of an interesting relationship because when we’re off the road we don’t see each other at all; we rarely talk to each other; we live in different towns; we run in different circles and we just never see each other and when we’re on the road we don’t see each other very often throughout the day until it’s time to go on stage. It’s an interesting situation. But here we are 16 years into being a band and we still have the same four guys-the same lineup. As far as, the new tour…what is your approach to the new tour as a band? The new tour came about by me looking at what’s going on in this country and realizing that this Stimulus package that our wonderful, esteemed president has put together for us basically it bailed out corporations who were irresponsible and it empowered the people who are taking advantage of the system already and it really didn’t do anything to help the average American. We really tried to do every possible thing we could do to actually create a situation that made things more affordable for people to come and enjoy the show. As far as the mindset you enter when you are writing lyrics, can you describe that? I don’t really know; we turn the lights down low; we light candles, vibe the whole room out. I have a hard time writing to paper so I just usually write straight to a recording and go back and listen to it… and that’s how it comes about, that’s how it happens. So you actually talk them out, then record it, and then go back to it? Sometimes me and the producer will sit there and talk about what it is that I might be wanting to say in the song and go from there and there’s sometimes where we can’t get the new track up fast enough so where I can get the lyrics that are just trying to come out of me.

How would you describe your sound, genre, whatever you want to call it, to someone who has no grasp on what type of music you guys play? It’s rock! It’s rock that’s a rollercoaster ride. It could go from heavy enough to fit in with the likes of Pantera or Selputura or something like that and it can go as light as James Taylor. I was actually reading a post on amazon. com, I think it was on Dysfunction actually, and it seemed like maybe some of your fans don’t like that lighter side of you… For every fan that doesn’t like the lighter side of us there are 10 other fans that that’s the whole reason they are a fan. So you just have to balance – you just have to walk that tightrope and try to make everybody happy and every record that we have done over the years all had heavy songs on it and all had the lighter side. Wait ‘til everyone hears the solo record that I’m going to put out. People are either going to love it or they’re going to hate it. My solo record is going to be very different. When is that scheduled to be released? It’s next… Probably the first quarter of next year. When and how did you discover your voice as a vocalist and was it a drawn out process? It was something that I was always able to do. I didn’t have to find it; it was there. My parents were very musical, there was always music in the house, always instruments being played in the house, there was always band practice at the house. There was never anything to keep it from coming out and it’s been the one thing in life that has always come easy for me. Do you have a favorite Staind album? Yeah! The Illusion of Progress, the latest one. It’s the best record we’ve made yet. Staind will be shaking Roberts Stadium on July 24th with three other heavy groups: Chevlle, Shinedown and Halestorm; for more information please visit www.staind.com.

CD REVIEWS Casey Driessen Oog (Red Shoe Records)

Casey Driessen has come a long way since his first fiddle made out of a cardboard box bound with paint stirrers tape. This new album is the successor to his Gammy nominated debut album 3D. As a five string fiddle maestro, Driessen puts genres into a blender and presses the puree’ button. The range of emotion covered by Driessen’s fiddle is astounding. Through his rhythm and tones arise anger, sadness, glee, and idleness. He previously toured with a band called The Colorfools and has played alongside Bela Fleck, Tim O’ Brien and Darrell Scott. Most of this album is instrumental but a serious listener will find a track for every mood. “Green Flash” is a bluegrass track which sulks its way uptempo until it reaches its peak with rhythmic string scratches and slides. “Uncontinental Breakfast” has a quirky, classical tone that transforms from playful to epic as the song progresses. “Conversation with Death” contains foreboding vocals and a bold, bluesy sound accented by a wailing guitar. “Lunar Cages” is a slow, mournful tune with oriental elements and sharp tones. “Flexible Helix” starts out as a ragtime inspired tune which explodes into a breakneck fiddle jig accented with a quick, funky bass line. The ticket is Satan vs. Driessen in a fiddle match; it’s Driessen by a landslide. – Nick Durcholz

Sunn O))) Monoliths and Dimensions (Southern Lord)

Hailing from Seattle, this prolific duo (Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson) has undoubtedly been one of the most well-regarded acts the area has produced in many a year. Sunn O))) specialize in a gray area that blurs the line between ultra-heavy doom metal and avantgarde noise/drone. You think Black Sabbath were slow? mental breakdown. This album, the group’s seventh (if you don’t count their numerous singles/ EPs/collaborations) ups the ante with plenty of guests and some larger cinematic moments. The 17+ minute opener here, “Agharha” incorporates narration from Mayhem’s Attila Csihar, creating a texturally rich soundscape complete with horns and grinding strings -- impressively intense and otherworldly. “Big Church” incorporates a Viennese woman’s choir for eerie effect (think a classic Hammer horror film, maybe). “Hunting and Gathering (Cydonia)” is almost like a symphonic black metal minus the drums, and again features Csihar’s masterfully evil vocals among the blackened guitar grind and, get this, brass! The closer, the 16-minute “Alice” is almost a crescendo of slow, brooding strength, told through fuzzed-out, sustained power chords and horns. It ends on an almost hopeful, even jazzy note. Monoliths and Dimensions” is as apt a title as you’re gonna get. This is real. I love it. - TODD ZACHRITZ

It is an uplifting track holding with it a joyous picture of Moore, marching guitar, and interjecting brass. “Spaceman” has a jazz/blues feel but contains jumpy, quick lyrics unlike Matthews’ usual vocal style. The chorus is punctuated with a rolling banjo which fits perfectly into the song. This album is a musical journey for the listener and a beautiful tribute for the late Moore. –NICK DURCHOLZ

PLACEBO Battle For The Sun (Vagrant)

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND Big Whiskey the GrooGrux King (RCA)

With the passing of the band’s saxophonist LeRoi Moore in June fans of Dave Matthews Band mourned and questioned what would become of them. The new album dedicated to Moore has dropped in which DMB display an eclectic and interesting musical struggle in his absence. The album is laden with emotion as would be expected, but the emotions usually involved with grief and loss battle each other throughout the album in the lyrics and the music. The listener gets a front seat to the bands coping experience through sounds in the bands comfort zone and some previously unexplored. “Shake Me Like a Monkey” is a dance hall dervish with a big band soul, sly vocals, and passionate lyrics. “Funny the Way it Is,” the single from the album, conveys a feeling of frustration between righteous and disastrous happenings with sharp, nimble drums and melancholy vocals. “Why I Am” is a playful reflection referring directly to the “Grux King” which was Moore’s nickname.

311 Uplifter

Placebo’s place in the pantheon of dark indie rock circles has been thoroughly cemented. They’ve played with admirer David Bowie, been featured in the glam-rock docu-drama “Velvet Goldmine,” had UK hit singles, and found a comfortable fan base of disaffected, tortured souls. This long-awaited follow-up to their fine Meds album of 2006 should please most fans, though nay-sayers will quickly turn a deaf ear. Vocalist Brian Molko’s trademark nasal, androgynous delivery is instantly recognizable, and his angst-filled, sometimes self-destructive lyrics will strike some as contrived, pretentious, and possibly whiny. I like it, personally, as I think Placebo have found a unique voice in rock, speaking to the people who live around the edges of popular culture, from junkies and freaks to anyone who’s had their heart broken or lost everything. The music skirts the lines between 80’s synthpop (listen to “Bright Lights”), 90’s indie rock (think Pixies and Nirvana), and a hint of electronica along the edges. Battle For The Sun is a solid album, full of self-questioning lyrics and moody music. The title track brings in climactic strings for an orchestral kick, and the harder-hitting “For What It’s Worth” will rock in the group’s live show. But it’s just not a step forwards for the band, and seems less ‘dangerous’ than past efforts. It’s not their landmark album, and there are no instant classics, but I’ll be giving it a few more spins to let it all soak in. -- TODD ZACHRITZ

The five veteran cornhuskers of rock are back with their 12th studio album and their musical talent has not subsided a bit. For as long as these guys have been in the music business this album is actually a first for them. Bob Rock, the legendary record producer, has collaborated with the band on this effort, guiding them with his own experience. This band is a hardy stew of genres which it has gathered in its 19 years of existence. Their journey has brought them from rap-core and punk to funk and reggae with many genres in between. Not many bands out there can go from laid back and kickin’ it to rockin’ on all cylinders like these guys can. “Hey You” starts the album out right with a catchy, flowing chorus peppered with buzzing guitars and some reggae heart. “It’s Alright” starts out smooth and bursts into a powerful chorus. P-Nut puts forth a funky slap bass solo midway through the song adding excitement. “Daisy Cutter” displays a strong rhythm from Sexton’s sharp snare with poetic lyrics and a strong chorus on top. “Never Ending Summer” is a crunchy, rap infused track. “Two Drops in the Ocean” is a solid ballad with meaningful, unique lyrics and a spacey vibe. This track is highlighted by SA’s melodic vocals and verse. 311 is an original band that has chistodd eled their mark upon the slate zachritz Contributor of contemporary rock. – NICK DURCHOLZ

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Fox)

chad benefield

While I think it’s slightly rude to cast Queen Latifah as the voice of a woolly mammoth, I am sure glad Fox Studios did. She is just one of many Hollywood A-listers lending their weight to what has become my favorite animated film franchise. In this, the third installment, all those A-listers (Latifah, Romano, Leguizamo, Leary) have returned for the Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which gets cooking when Sid the Sloth falls into an underground world where dinosaurs have been dwelling unnoticed. Oh! So, they’re not extinct? Oh! So, they didn’t really die inhaling the fumes from their own poop! This is awesome! Sign me up! Who knew?

Bruno (Universal) He’s here! He’s queer! Get used to it! Comic genius Sacha Baron Cohen is back! After splitting sides in Borat, Cohen is rolling out an even zanier character! Yes. Behold Bruno, the flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter who swooped into the MTV Music Awards and went “cheek-tocheek” with Eminem! Borat worked best when Cohen’s alter-ego was taken seriously by people who didn’t know any better. I was a huge fan of Borat and Bruno when they made rounds on Da Ali G Show. Bruno was routinely the funnier of the two because he was frequently the impetus of major culture clash! Rumors are swirling that such clashes in this film involve Paula Abdul, a Bingo caller and more. This won’t be for everyone, but I personally cannot wait! Bring on the hot pants!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Warner Brothers) I have seen Harry Potter’s penis. No, really! I have. I saw it in New York. As you all may or may not have heard, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe tried to broaden his horizons this season by starring as a deranged loony bird in a revival of Equus, a play about a teenager who takes an ice pick to a stable full of horses and stabs out their eyes! While he was passable on Broadway, it didn’t take long to realize that Radcliffe’s claim to fame is and will always be the Potter franchise. Can you believe it? Half-Blood Prince is the sixth installment! The good news for us . . . Harry Potter is getting better with age! Making this project even more exciting is the fact that Half-Blood Prince promises to teach us more about Harry’s archrival, Voldemort (played ingeniously by Ralph Fiennes). Make no mistake, peeps. Harry Potter is magic.

G-Force (Buena Vista) The United States government has a new elite team of spies! And they are all gerbils! Guinea pigs! (Insert reflective pause and cleansing exhale here). Hmmm. So many jokes. Not enough paper!

The Orphan (Warner Brothers) Vera Farmiga (Boy in the Striped Pajamas) and Peter Sarsgaard (Kinsey, Garden State) play a wealthy couple who decide they want to be parents and adopt a young Eastern European girl. It’s a sweet gesture until they realize the girl is the spawn of hell! For me, it’s movies like this that reinforce my decision to go through life childless. Angelina Jolie can adopt hundreds of babies and all will grow up without incident. If I did it just once, I would no doubt get saddled with this crazy European with sixes on her scalp and visions of burning sugarplums dancing in her head. I’m happy with my schnauzers, thank you! (and I’m happy with The Omen, Damien and the uber-awesome Gregory Peck – ed).

NEW RELEASES July 7th

Knowing (Summit Entertainment)

you clear your mind and focus intently on my thought processes. I am inviting you to get inside my head. Try to feel what I feel. Try to think what I think. Push. Push. And, now, the reveal . . . GRADE: D **If you guessed any higher than a C-, your psychic powers blow! You are not a Watcher. You are not a Pusher. You suck.

The Haunting in Connecticut (Lionsgate)

Director Alex Proyas’ (I, Robot) new thriller is a prime example of how less is often times more. The premise of Knowing, that an unearthed time capsule contains a series of numbers that predict, to the date, major world catastrophes, is inspired. In fact, that premise is all we need for this film to work. But, screenwriters Ryne Douglas Pearson and Juliet Snowden just keep layering it on like Paula Deen frosting a big old cake, ya’ll. They add these stupid whisper people, some aliens, and a bizarre Adam-and-Evelike ending that suggests that the world will be repopulated by rabbits and incest. It sounds weird because it is weird and I’d be lying if said I didn’t laugh aloud. GRADE: C

Virginia Madsen (of the stellar Sideways and whole bunch of crap) stars as Sara Campbell, a mother whose teenaged son is dying from a very aggressive form of cancer, for which the only treatment is experimental and out of town. Because Sara decides Matt isn’t strong enough to keep making the drive to and from treatment, she rents a house (in Connecticut!) that just so happens to have been a former mortuary still haunted by the spirits of people embalmed there. Gosh! When I look for rental I basically just need a washer/dryer! While Haunting isn’t a hit, it’s not a total miss either. Honestly, my biggest problem with the movie is cancer. The movie will have you believe that Matt is made even more ill by the haunted house. But, he was already gravely ill before they ever moved in. This movie would have worked better if Matt had been a perfectly healthy teen living in that house. If the spirits had truly compromised his health, that would have been scary! That would have been a Haunting in Connecticut! GRADE: C

Push (Summit Entertainment)

If you’re a big Hollywood studio executive and you have a movie like Push in your hands, you have two choices. You can release it straight to video because no one’s going to care. Or, you roll it out to theatres in the month of February because no one’s going to care. Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Cellular) and Dakota Fanning (who’s in everything) star as two young Americans on the run in Hong Kong. Each has a special supernatural gift. Fanning’s “Cassie” is a Watcher. No, not a Wheel Watcher. She doesn’t have a Pat Sajak fetish! She’s a Watcher. She can see bits and pieces of the future. Evans’ “Nick” is a Pusher. He’s able to manipulate matter with his mind. Both are on the run from a government agency known as Division, which is made up of other Watchers, Pushers, Bleeders, Shifters, Wipers, Shadows, etc. Now, before I unveil my assessment of Push, I would like you to test your own powers of clairvoyance and try to predict what letter grade I will assign to it. Concentrate. It’s very important that Owensboro July 2009 • Call for Advertising Information (270) 485-2292

This is a complete freak show. Think Cirque de Soleil with dolls. Freak show! Acid trip! Whitney Houston hallucination! This is BIZARRE and it was released in 3D, which means you could reach out and touch the crazy! Based on Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name and adapted for the big screen and directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach), Coraline tells the story of a young girl who is fed up with her life at home. In her frustration and boredom, she discovers a portal to a more idealized version of that home. Mom and Dad are still there, but they’re perfect! In fact, everything’s perfect! Too perfect. And how do you know everyone’s perfect? Because everyone has buttons for eyes. Think The Stepford Wives meets Frosty The Snowman. Look! I don’t know who this movie was made for. I can’t imagine a child sitting it through it without being scarred for life. I sat through and I think I’m scarred for life. In fact, this gave me more scars than the time I fell down the stairs of my loft completely naked. This is some freaky #$@^! GRADE: C(it’s for people who need to add to movies such as The Wall and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas to watch while recreationalizing… -- ed).
