Tri-State Bride 2016

What was your inspiration for your venture into planning? I did not know I was going to be a planner - there was no “event planning” industry when I started. I have always loved designing and creating - no matter how small or large - parties, weddings, everything. This industry allowed me to follow that love. I wasn’t doing it for me, I was doing it to touch other people - to celebrate their achievements and their goals.

In your opinion, what is the most important part of a wedding day? I don’t even have to think about this one - 100% to not lose sight of what is really important: the bride and groom. So many people feel they have to do something a specific way. To me, the most important thing is to make sure that whatever you are doing, you are doing it for yourself and your other half. Do what you want to do, not what you think other people want you to do. There are no rights or wrongs, and there are definitely no rules.

Sometimes couples get caught up in minute details and the day flies by. What is your advice to avoid missing the important moments? Take a deep breath and focus on the moment - on what is happening right then. Try to set your day’s schedule out to first take care of yourself. Relax and put cucumbers on your eyes - do whatever gives you that sense of ease. Pamper yourself and try to make sure you keep people around you that are calm and 100% there to support you on your special day. The worst thing you can do is put yourself in a stressful situation. In other words, stay in the moment. I always tell my brides and grooms to take each other’s hand when they are at the altar; take a deep breath and look back at your guests and who is there supporting and loving you. Look at everything around you and soak it all in. Have someone remind you to appreciate each moment throughout your wedding day - your family, friends, laughing, everything. Grab as much of it as you can.

NOT need to duplicate anything, you just need to pick out the little things you like and create your own design. When I look at a picture there is always something within the image that catches my eye. Take note of those specifics. Don’t get stuck in the big picture - pick out the little things and run with them. For example, if you love a design with all peonies, you can do the same thing with dahlias. Don’t think you can ONLY use peonies. Focus on what it is you really want from the inspiration and twist it to be your own. You will love the outcome that much more.

What are some of the hottest trends and color palettes for 2016? 2016’s hottest colors are Rose Quartz and Serenity. They are very calming, beautiful colors. Not too bold or loud. Metallics are surprisingly versatile and beautiful. Gold (even rose gold) is always beautiful and a great way to add a romantic touch to your design. Choose your wedding colors and add hints or gold to make it pop. 2016 will be much less Pinterest and much more personal. Brides and grooms are looking to express themselves - a look that will never ‘date’.

How do you feel about themed weddings versus traditional? To me, a theme is ‘love & memories’ and however you get there is great. The theme doesn’t matter as long as you are happy and comfortable in your special day. It is all about love in the end.

What do you recommend to help a bride maintain her sanity on the big day? Stay focused and don’t be nervous. It is important to have your quiet time. I always make sure the photographer stops shooting at least 30 minutes before the wedding begins to allow my brides and grooms their time.

Advice for the first-time brides and grooms?

With resources such as Pinterest and an abundance of wedding publications, how does one filter that information into something unique to the couple and within their personal budget?

It’s all about the two of you - nothing else. Make sure you are happening in every planning decision you make along the way. Do not overspend and lose sight of what is really important. Spend what you can afford and not what you can’t. You will be so much happier in the end. - Whitney Patterson

Keeping it Local

Wedding expert Nikki Davis explores the benefits of frequenting area-based businesses for your Big Day preparations.

T

he perfect wedding comes from the sum of its parts, and each decision you make in its regard has an effect on your overall day and experience. Your wedding selections always impact you, your spouse-to-be and your guests, but sometimes those choices can have an influence on others in your community as well. The “shop local” movement has gained traction lately with consumers choosing to make purchases from locally-owned businesses; it’s something that you can do to not only make your wedding extra special but also make a difference to those around you. Money spent locally helps a community in so many ways, from encouraging social relationships and supporting local causes to job creation and product diversity promotion. Here are just a few of the locally-owned businesses that are making a difference in our community and providing high quality products and services sure to enhance your wedding celebration.

BAUer’s Tents & Party Rentals Inc. Bauer’s Tents & Party Rentals Inc. was born out of a family business property founded in 1880 from the first generation Bauers who helped settled the community of Darmstadt, IN. Their tent rental division started in the early 1920s and was founded by Raymond W. Bauer, a third generation family member. Fourth generation business owners Jim and Peggy Bauer expanded the rental business to service IN, IL, KY, TN and MO, and the current owners, Mark & Diane Shaw, have continued to expand the tent rental business with additional party rentals. Diane, a fifth generation family member, explains that “the business operations are shared with the sixth generation’s Amber Hoffherr, who puts her own spin on the business.” Bauer’s Tents & Party Rentals Inc. continues to travel throughout the Midwest servicing weddings, corporate events, trade expos, fairs, festivals and school functions, and they pride themselves on excellent service. “Shopping local ensures that other family/small businesses in the tri-state are supported to succeed,” Hoffherr says. “[When] we are willing to support each other, then we can flourish and continue to stay in business. Keeping money local is important to everyone.” Continued on page 14

KEEPING IT LOCAL EXPERT ADVICE FROM NIKKI DAVIS

I DO FLORAL DESIGN I Do Floral Design was started by Susan Chatman on the north side of Evansville in February 2015 after she decided to specialize in floral arrangements for weddings and corporate events. Her two previous employers, both local florists, did floral arrangements for all occasions. “This meant that not only did we do wedding and event work, but we did everyday birthday, anniversary, and funeral work as well,” Chatman says. “With my business, I’m not tied down by this other work and can provide individualized and customized service to my clients.” While her business is still relatively new compared to many other local businesses, it’s certainly growing. The majority of her clients find her via personal references and social media - primarily Facebook - and Chatman is currently working with a boutique agency to design and build a responsive website to enhance her business. Since launching I Do Floral Design, she has helped many brides enhance their wedding day as well as decorated several local community events. “I like to make a difference by doing wedding flowers to accommodate all budgets without compromising the quality I was used to creating,” Chatman says. “Shopping and supporting local businesses means that we are investing in our community. We all live here, shop here, and want to see our community thrive and be alive. This doesn’t happen when we send our money outside of the community. We help each other grow via networking, partnering, and investing. We are the true job creators in this economy.”

SAUCED Sauced opened in December of 2014 after seven months of renovation to the Kellogg-Maley Mansion that housed Kirby’s Private Dining on Parrett Street in downtown Evansville. Created by chef/entrepreneur Scott Schymik, the hugely popular Italian restaurant is currently undergoing another renovation that will see Kirby’s Private Dining absorbed and transformed into The Ballroom at Sauced. “The expansion of Sauced will complete the brand and incorporate every aspect of any type of dining experience,” Schymik explains. “From restaurant dining to private functions, Sauced will be able to accommodate any need. The ability to create a destination eatery, [and the] new exciting vibe on Haynie’s Corner [is] all about supporting local.” Many of Sauce’s newly hired employees come from the neighborhood and can walk to work, and much of the restaurant’s customer base is from the nearby area as well. “Our goal is to create a local option that would be able to compete with chain restaurants when it comes to atmosphere, style, food, drink, and service,” Schymik says. “It all comes down to having passion and pride in your neighborhood, and we definitely exude that. Personally, I don’t frequent many national chains for much of any product, unless that is my only option. Local businesses create most of the niche markets, and they support each other. Therefore most of their profits stay local, creating more cash flow and tax revenue, which helps everyone.” Continued on page 16

KEEPING IT LOCAL EXPERT ADVICE FROM NIKKI DAVIS

Sweet emotions soaptions & Potions Sweet Emotions Soaptions & Potions was started by Amber Combs in October 2012 after she moved back to the area from Atlanta. The Newburgh-based business was inspired by what she perceived as a “lack of accessibility and understanding of the importance of truly natural and healthy skincare.” “I originally just made things for myself and then as a way to prove to family and friends that you could have natural, healthy, and beneficial skincare products without giving up the appeals of scent and appearance that seemed to be the biggest draw for what people used on their skin without spending a small fortune to do so,” Combs explains. Her best friend’s baby was her first guinea pig for what is still her best selling soap, and what customers most frequently cite as beneficial for treating eczema. Before officially opening the business, Combs had so many friends using the products and recommending them that she started her LLC. From there, her business has taken on a life of its own; three years on, Combs is in her second retail store and is successfully growing the wholesale side of the business. She and her first full-time, salaried “maker” are preparing to head to Washington DC, Chicago, and New York for upcoming tradeshows. Like so many other small business owners, Combs is a strong advocate for shopping local. “It is so true that you support

• 16 • www.TriStateBride.me

more than a business; you support your own community,” she says. “A big part of my business model is giving back, and the more my business grows, the more I’m able to do so. I feel like businesses owe that to their communities. However, I also feel like all is fair in the world of commerce and the way a family spends their money in our economy; so it’s on us to make products that stand up to the price tag on them. With that said, it also goes back to consumers understanding that the money they spend in small business goes directly to the community. I have a background working for big companies though, and they too have a place in communities both for the jobs they provide and the ways that they too give back to communities. I think there’s a happy medium and a place for both.”

So, whatever products and services you choose for your Big Day, consider shopping local businesses. You can make a lasting impact on your neighbors, friends, and the community as a whole by integrating what they offer into your wedding! - Nikki Davis

Getting Sassy With Samantha Goldberg An open letter from award-winning celebrity event designer (and creator of “Bridezilla”) to area brides

S

o, you’re newly engaged; what the heck do you do now? Yeah, I’ve been there - I only wish I had me to help out when I was about to trot down the aisle. You may think planners have these stress free, flawless weddings. That is SO wrong. OMG, how does a type A planner relinquish control and enjoy their wedding?!

Bride-to-be: “I’m not really engaged yet.” Me: “But, you know he’s going to ask you?” Bride-to-be: “Not exactly.”

First, ladies, from a sassy yet completely savvy former bride, my goal is to guide you through some of those CRAZY, UNTHINKABLE times and hug you from afar - to share tips and tales that will make you feel much more in control as you get closer to the big day! So grab that bottle of wine and let’s chat about this most awesome planning experience and “interesting” adventure you’re about to embark on. Direct from my mouth to your ears with a few words of wisdom from former brides - LET’S DO IT!

Me: “Have you discussed wedding dates and you just want to price things out?” Bride-to-be: “Not exactly.” Me: “Well, call me when you’re engaged. I’m ready when you are.”

Unbelievably, at least four to five times a year I receive calls requesting my planning services that go something like this: Bride-to-be: “I’ve got the exact location for the ceremony, the dress, the first dance song...uh...” Me: “The ring?” Bride-to-be: “Well...not exactly.” Me: “Wait, so you just haven’t picked it out yet?” • 20 • www.TriStateBride.me

Seconds of uncomfortable silence follow that seem like hours...

Now, get this: In one particular case, the couple broke up. Then, a year later, I get a call back from the same bride. I was finally able to give her a day full of fun AND a reality check! Seven years later, she and her hubby are on child number two and doing well. Can ya believe it? Take it from me, you need to hold off on any thoughts of planning your wedding until you’ve got the right man - the one you see being your life partner. And another thing: if you start running to that dress shop without finding out what the budget is for a gown or the wedding overall, you might find out too late that you’ve cut your budget by 20%. Say NO to Tri-State Bride 2016

the gown until you establish a budget, OK? This is the #1 reason why brides and grooms fight with each other and soon-to-be in laws. Many “damsels in distress” - a.k.a. brides that are guilty of spending over $20,000 on a dress have come to my office in tears because their total budget for the wedding was $50,000 and now they only have $30,000 left to take care of their 300 invitees. Ladies, that is a KFC with tents and plastic. In the end, spoken like the true veteran celebrity planner that I am, I can only offer them a glass of wine and completely start over with the budget. Remember, you can always start small and go bigger, BUT going in the reverse, Jell-O molds & KFC start taking over the wedding. So, brides and grooms PLEASE remember to sit down with your families and let’s do this right! Don’t get me wrong - I like Colonel Sanders but would rather see you glowing with joy, having the best day possible. My final thought: Wouldn’t it be great to plan a wedding in 9 to 12 months with basically no stress at all? It is 100% doable ( OK, 99.9%). I have orchestrated over 5000 events in my career and there are things that still surprise me as they will you, but the advice that I am sharing provides a whole new meaning to having a true celebration of engagement, love and laughter - which basically leads to a day celebrating your union - a.k.a. big giant party. We all love you and while you may make mistakes, you most likely will be the ONLY one who sees them. So relax- enjoy Mr. Fab and that gorgeous rock! Yours truly,

TIPS FOR MAKING A MARRIAGE LAST

or nearly 30 years, I have been a participant in a variety of weddings. Some were remarkably memorable and lovely. Some were more like nightmares that keep reliving themselves in my dreams.

So, from the voice of experience, here are four things to keep in mind: 1. Decide what is really important (read: non-negotiable) and stick to it. Choose about three things that you really want in a particular way and don’t budge. Leave the lesser decisions to those who are really into making decisions. 2. Don’t go broke over your wedding. A famous philosopher once said, “Less is more.” A wedding lasts for a few hours. Your financial well-being and stability lasts for years. There is a very fine line between lovely and tacky and tacky usually costs more. 3. It’s easy to plan a wedding, compared to planning a marriage. Take about a year to work together with a good counselor to lay the foundation for a strong and enduring marriage. Your wedding celebrates the completion of that initial work and marks the beginning of your life together. 4. On your wedding day, stay as focused and attentive as you can. I’ve had more people tell me after their wedding how much they missed; distractions abound. On your wedding day, let someone else be in charge and stay present in the moment. If you were sitting in my office, I would have more to say. But these four suggestions will have to suffice. Have a glorious wedding day and a happy, healthy, and wonderful marriage!

BEING THE MOS T BE AUTIFUL BRIDE It’s no secret that all women are uniquely beautiful, but on your wedding day, reaching optimal beauty is a priority. It’s not that we want to cake on the makeup, but achieving an enhanced look is vital. As your beauty coach, I am here to help you. My techniques target your beauty from the inside out. S

ince true beauty comes from within, it’s important that you don’t miss out on embracing your inner beauty. This involves taking a look inside your Mind, Heart, Body, and Soul. If you think about it, this step is also vital for your overall life. Think about it; how would you feel if you were to buy a brand new car, but decided to keep the parts from your old car inside? The car would look good on the outside, but the inside would be another story. The same goes for your beauty and life. You don’t want to learn tips on enhancing your outer beauty if the inside is messed up. On the same note, you don’t want to go into marriage with baggage from your past. To help you with this step, I have included a free guide on my website for you. It’s called Life Inventory Guide. Head on over to yourbeautydate.com and get started. Then, come back so I can give you more tips and tricks!

COMPLETE A SELF-ASSESSMENT

I

know, you’re probably thinking, “This process sounds like a lot of work!” Trust me, this step is more fun than it sounds. I want you to take a look at your facial features such as hair color, eye color, face shape, brow shape, and eye shape. You have to know what you’re working with, girl. I’m sure by now you have a Pinterest board filled with ideas for your perfect wedding day look. Before you make a final decision, compare the features in the photo to yours. I’m not saying you can’t achieve any look that you want, but do keep in mind that it may not look exactly like the photo if your features aren’t the same. Also, while we’re on the subject of Pinterest/Social Media... Keep in mind that almost all photos are edited in some manner - photoshopped, manipulated, you name it.

Beauty Guide Expert advice for your big day from beauty specialist Jenna Hatcher. Owner of Iris & Gold / Seattle, Washington

CHOOSING A MAKEUP ARTIS T When it comes to wedding planning, I think I speak for all women when I say we want something memorable, beautiful and unique. Whether it’s done with a big budget from the help of both families or on your own dime, you want it to be special. Typically, the date and venue are the first things to be considered, followed by food and photography. But what about the very important but often overlooked makeup artist (MUA)? As the bride, you will be in every single photograph, so it’s imperative to look your best. With that in mind, let’s talk about who to choose, how to choose, and why.

O N C E Y O U ’ V E G AT H E R E D S O M E I D E A S , S TA R T LOOKING FOR AN ARTIST

A

great way to search is by googling your town and “makeup artist” and checking out local MUA websites. You can also search hashtags on Instagram. For example: #evansvillemakeupartist, #bridalmakeup, #weddingmakeup.

T

he cost will vary based on location, but there are a few things to consider:

On site services: unlike going to a salon, a MUA will come to you, at your convenience. This makes life a lot easier, as you can be in a comfortable, familiar place. The price will typically include a bridal trial (a run-through six weeks to a month before the actual day) and the day of location. Their Kit: a big part of the cost is wrapped up in the products and tools they’re using. A MUA typically spends thousands of dollars to carry top quality, high-end makeup and skincare that you normally wouldn’t use. Consider it a way of pampering yourself. While you may never buy that $80 Tom Ford foundation, you’ll be wearing it on your wedding day, thanks to your artist! Experience: you want to choose someone who has great work on their website with a lot of wedding images as well as published work (bridal magazines, styled shoots for online wedding publications.) The latter is not a must but it’s a plus. This shows that they know what they’re doing, including how to handle the stressful yet exciting day of a bride. Their experience also reflects the time, energy, and research they’ve put in to honing their craft and choosing the best products. Know that choosing a freelance MUA will cost a bit more than going to a salon for many of the reasons noted above. Plus, a salon MUA has access to products that the salon provides, which cuts out a huge cost. However, keep in mind that a salon MUA may dabble in a lot of things (hair, makeup, nails), while a freelance MUA considers what he/ she does both a career and a passion.

NOW IT’S TIME TO CHOOSE

Y

ou may love several artists, but who really grabbed your attention? Who responded quickly, kindly and professionally? Go with your gut, and I promise you won’t regret it. And even if you feel like, “I can’t afford this” or “That’s way too much money for makeup,” remember all the factors that go into the cost. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment; you want to look your absolute best!

As a freelance MUA who has walked down the aisle, I’ll tell you that I don’t remember looking at the table arrangements, what exact music was playing or everything I ate - but I do remember feeling beautiful and looking at my pictures a zillion times! I know that every woman is different, with different budgets and concerns, but I’ve never met a bride-to-be who said, “I don’t care what I look like on my wedding day.” Whether you opt for a freelance MUA or a salon MUA, you can look beautiful on your Big Day either way by planning ahead and finding just the right person to create just the right look. -Jenna

Beauty Guide Expert advice for your big day from skilled artist Katie Russ Rhythm Salon & Spa / Newburgh, Indiana

LOOK ING GOOD & S TAYING SANE ON YOUR BIG DAY The pressure is always on for a wedding to be absolutely perfect. However, in my experience, that task is next to impossible. A hairstylist for over ten years, I have been behind the scenes at countless weddings and can assure you that something will go wrong. And when it does, even the most calm, organized bride can morph into a maniac. Still, there are ways to prevent that frightening transformation from happening.

S AY Y E S TO T H E D R E S S BEFORE YOUR TRIAL RUN FOR HAIR & MAKEUP

Y

es, I said trial run. This is an absolute must if you want to look your best walking down the aisle. When scheduling your trial, do it about a month before the big day. No need to make it any further in advance if you expect your stylist to remember anything about it. We see a lot of people. Make sure you bring photos. Realistic ones. Not the most ridiculous creation you can find on Pinterest. In fact, don’t bring any photos from Pinterest. Ever. (As a side note, if anyone in your wedding party requests a trial run for themselves, fire them. No one will be looking at them; it’s your day to shine.)

MAKE SURE YOUR LE ADING L A D I E S A R E C O M F O R TA B L E I N THEIR OWN SKIN

D

on’t make them wear their hair a certain way. You’re already forcing them to wear a dress that they more than likely hate. And will never wear again.

These are just a few of the things to consider. Everything else can be googled. -Katie Katie Russ is a graduate of Roger’s Academy of Hair Design, and has previously worked as a stylist at Salon Fleur De Lis in St. Louis. When she’s not bringing out the beauty in locals and styling brides for their big day, she enjoys cooking, dancing and making everyone around her laugh out loud. • 32 • www.TriStateBride.me

MAKE SURE THE HAIRST YLIST YOU CHOOSE HAS WEDDING EXPERIENCE

W

edding parties are a different animal than your typical day at the salon. Make sure you trust this person with your life. Make sure that you are in the most comfortable setting for you. If it’s not the salon, ask the stylist if they will do on-sight work. And be sure to book it as far in advance as you possibly can. The stylist has to make sure they have the time for such a circumstance.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE GROOM AND HIS MEN

T

hey need help in the hair department as well. They probably need the most help, in fact. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist if they can figure out a way to tidy up the men. No one should have a hairy neck in their tuxedo. It’s not attractive.

Local photographer Daniel Knight celebrates 20 years of capturing life’s special moments

professionalism is unparalleled; every client gets the royal treatment no matter the size or scope of the job:

T

o not only survive but thrive for two decades in any business is a quite an accomplishment, but the everchanging, competitive field of photography presents a particularly daunting challenge. And yet, on June 1, 2015, Daniel Knight marked 20 years of excellence at his Mt. Vernon-based Studio B. The tri-state’s favorite photographer also recently received a fifth Readers’ Choice Award in recognition of his exceptional work and sterling reputation. For Knight and his fantastic crew, treating clients with great care and respect is the key. In other words, it’s all about the experience. The relaxing atmosphere of Studio B attracts a very broad range of clients. In fact, Knight routinely photographs infants, children, families and seniors but also does commercial and industrial work, even food assignments. With 25 years of study and practice, he’s prepared for virtually any situation. Most importantly, Knight never loses focus; he remains more committed than ever to creating great memories. There’s nothing he cherishes more than producing fine photographic portraiture, a lasting connection to that special moment. No wonder then that when asked what he does for a living, Knight nearly always responds, “I do people.”

As the client enters Studio B, they are greeted by the friendly staff and studio dogs

The client can choose to shoot indoors in the state of the art studio with an infinity wall and a variety of background options or outdoors on 17 acres of land, including barns, forest area and pastures

Knight ensures that hair, makeup and clothing maintain a pristine quality

The images go through Studio B’s front end designers; the best images are chosen and light color correction and exposure issues are adjusted

The client comes back in less than two weeks to the presentation room to view their images on the big screen projector and decide which ones they would like to receive on Studio B’s high quality archival photo paper and canvas wraps

The images then go to Studio B’s retoucher who fine tunes the color and exposure along with softening, removing or fading imperfections

The images are carefully checked for quality, framed and wrapped for the client to pick them up and display proudly in their home

What are you waiting for? Give Studio B a call today and ensure that life’s special moments are captured by an awardwinning photographer with a real gift for making people feel comfortable and a long history of producing exceptional work. Studio B is located at 3941 Blackford Rd. E in Mt. Vernon / 812-8382707.

THE MORNING AFTER MARRIAGE

A G U Y ’ S TA K E O N W A K I N G U P T O T H E R E A L I T Y O F M A R R I A G E

W

hile I don’t consider anyone an expert in marriage and relationships, after tying the knot a couple of times, I’ve got a pretty good perspective on “The Morning After” a guy gets married. Here are a few thoughts to help you understand what he’s thinking and how you can help.

started a rumor that marriage tends to kill the passion. Ladies, this scares the hell out of us, so it wouldn’t hurt to make him feel “special” the morning after - it would be a great start to the marriage on your part ( guys, thank me later if she actually does it).

The morning after for a guy is crazy as hell!

The second a guy wakes up the morning after saying “I do” and partying into the wee hours, he’s thinking, ‘Holy crap, I’m married. I’m married. I. Am. Married.’ While you ladies think about getting married your whole lives and can’t wait to walk down the aisle, most males tend to avoid the thought until the last 48 hours when it gets really real. It’s a shocker. It’s sobering. It’s real.

Now, this doesn’t mean that we’re not happy about being married or regret it; usually the morning after is when we just accept that we’re really staying in this relationship with this one woman and that stuff is now legally binding. I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t make us a bit nervous at first. And another thing: Somewhere along the way, some guy

Roles. Believe it or not, whether you were already cohabitating or it’s your first time living together, he’s probably laying there thinking, in order, ‘What the hell, I’m married?! Who’s going to do the dishes, laundry, lawn mowing and other crap around the house?!’ Hopefully, you have these particulars figured out but if not, order some room service and coffee and have some fun discussing everything. Let him know it’s 2016 and women can mow the lawn now, too:)

There’s a ton more stuff but my time is short so just take note - the morning after for a guy is crazy as hell. He may not say it, but he’s thinking it. He’s no longer looking at you and thinking fiancé in his mind, he’s looking at you thinking, ‘That’s my wife’, and it can be a little scary to a guy. Give him a hug, have some breakfast and reassure him that it’s going to be an awesome life together. Turn it into the best morning of his life. -Brian Bennett

WEDDINGDISASTERS

You can plan all you want, but sometimes the stars just refuse to align Every bride dreams of the perfect wedding. From the dress to the table decorations, every aspect of the ceremony is painstakingly considered and re-considered; changes are made right up to the very last minute in a valiant attempt to pull off that unforgettable day you always read about in magazines just like this one. But, as we all know, things don’t always go as planned. And nobody knows that better than the three local ladies below who have kindly shared their harrowing experiences both as brides and innocent bystanders.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. Lisa Rhyand Vaughan was well on her way to a disaster-free wedding. Or so she thought. But with just a few weeks to go, a series of unfortunate events nearly derailed the entire process. Like a domino effect from hell, the casualties just kept piling up. For starters, her florist suddenly closed up shop and absconded with the deposit. Next, one of the groomsmen called to say that he couldn’t get off work for the big day. But that was simply the calm before the storm. To add insult to injury, Lisa and her fiancé discovered that their muchanticipated honeymoon cruise had been canceled. And then, for the final slap in the face, on the way to the rehearsal dinner the mother of the bride fell in the parking lot and broke her arm. Still, don’t cry too hard for Lisa. The wedding took place as scheduled and by all accounts, everyone had a great time.

WHAT A DISASTER!

NEW BRIDE OR NURSE IN THE MAKING? Kelsey Dakota Chandler learned the hard way that alcohol and bonfires don’t mix at receptions (or at any other function, frankly). No doubt it sounded like a good idea at the time, but after several hours of heavy partying, her post-wedding ceremony campout turned into a scene from ER (or whatever your favorite medical drama happens to be) as things got a little out of hand. Yes, it seems that the combination of the heat from the flames and the beer intake caused Kelsey’s cousin to lose focus, and the poor guy cut his arm something fierce with a knife that he was handling at the worst possible time. So instead of celebrating her exciting new union, Kelsey spent the rest of the evening tending to her cousin’s gaping wound, waiting for the ambulance to arrive. But god love her, she kept the pressure on the cut and probably saved the young man’s life. Kudos. As Kelsey sums it up, “it was a crazy night.” Continued on page 58 • 56 • www.TriStateBride.me

WEDDING DISASTERS CONTINUED

AN EYE-OPENING EXPERIENCE. Jennifer McKee hasn’t walked down the aisle just yet, but that doesn’t mean she’s been immune to wedding disasters. In fact, she was right in the eye of the storm, so to speak, on her brother’s big day. A bridesmaid, she reportedly woke up the morning of the ceremony with a delightful case of conjunctivitis - otherwise known as pinkeye. You can only imagine how her day transpired from there. First, she headed to urgent care for treatment - which wasn’t open at that hour, of course. By the time Jennifer was finally seen by a doctor, her entire schedule was out of whack. She was late to get her hair done and could only apply makeup to one eye (an interesting look, for sure). Naturally, that good eye proceeded to water constantly all day long making it appear that Jennifer was crying in nearly every picture. But here’s the eye-cing on the cake (apologies). Her sisterin-law’s family is Polish and they’re partial to a tradition where you take a shot of alcohol with the bride and groom and then form an “arm tunnel” with somebody else while the rest of the line goes underneath this manmade cover. If the arms get dropped, essentially trapping you there, the two people that dropped the tunnel kiss you on the cheek. Do you SEE where this is going? That’s right; everybody was hammered and didn’t seem to understand Jennifer’s warnings about her pinkeye - and that, by the way, it’s contagious. Instead, they all just kept right on dropping that tunnel on her and kissing her. Final count: seven wedding guests and three dogs went home with an infection. Good times! Special thanks to Lisa, Kelsey and Jennifer for sharing. We hope this helps with the healing process.
