interest users “pin” clips from the internet onto boards on the website. They are then able to share the boards with all Pinterest users. There is a plug-in that users can download to pin anything from the web onto their boards. Because of all of this, Pinterest has billions of ideas just waiting to be found by users. So why not use it to plan a wedding? Pinterest has a section dedicated to weddings, and there are tons of ways you can use it for yours.
Now-a-days everything is themed, and Pinterest is no different with millions of ideas for themes and color schemes for weddings. You can find anything from Batman-themed receptions to rustic themed weddings, and everything in between. There are also tons of themes for wedding showers. The best part is that you can even find pins with ideas for the smallest details to really help support your theme and color scheme.
This is probably every woman’s favorite part of Pinterest. Well, this or the engagement and wedding rings. Finding ideas for the perfect wedding dress couldn’t be easier than on Pinterest. Designers, shops, boutiques and bridal magazines can easily be found by just browsing through the wedding section of the site. “I found dress inspiration, what I liked and didn’t like. That made dress shopping much easier, and I found ‘The One’ the second time I went dress shopping,” said Courtney Rausch, who is using Pinterest to find ideas for her July wedding. Finding the inspiration for a dress potentially makes dress shopping a breeze. You can find the idea of what you want on the site, print a photo and take it to a local bridal shop. There, they can help you find something that matches your taste. It’s much easier to show someone what you want than try to explain it. • 8 • www.TriStateBride.com
It is important to remember that you may find the one, the perfect dress on Pinterest, but you might not be able to find it in a store. Pinterest compiles years worth of information on the website, so some styles found could possibly be from last season, therefore unavailable. It’s important to keep that in mind as you browse. You can also find really great accessories to go with your dress such as a perfect necklace, ring or bracelet to really make your dress pop. And you can find them cheap. “I have found a lot of resale websites for wedding stuff, including dresses. I even got a Swarovski necklace for only 50 bucks,” said Kylie Tyler, who was recently married to her Marine husband, and is planning a wedding that her friends and family can attend. Tri-State Bride 2013
It’s no secret that weddings aren’t cheap. But there are an insane amount of ideas to help you keep your wedding within your budget. Pinterest is known for starting a DIY and craft craze, so get on and find ways to make your décor yourself! There are tutorials for everything on the site: how to make table runners, customized tablecloths, favors for guests and everything in between. This could potentially knock your spending down for the small things and allow you to spend more on the big things. “I made some of my décor that I was not as concerned about, so I could save money for the things I wanted to spend more on. I made my own table runners to put the extra money towards my dress, honeymoon and rings,” said Rausch.
Renting decorations is expensive. Centerpieces alone can cost you a pretty penny and take away from the bigger things, like your dress or your honeymoon. These are things you can easily make yourself, and for much less money than a rental company is going to charge you to rent them. “It’s been extremely effective for me. It’s like the do-ityourself wedding planner. I know that it’s not in the budget for me to have a wedding planner, so having a website that provides everything in one place is the perfect way for me to have creative planning on a lower budget,” said Tyler.
Getting engaged is one of the best feelings in the world. You’re getting married! You’ve found the person that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with! Then it hits you. Who is supposed to pay for what? How much is this going to cost me? Where do I begin on this wedding stuff!? Have no fear. Pinterest is here. And this is probably the most interesting and helpful part of the website: there are a ton of different detailed lists of how to plan what and when, and who should be responsible for paying for what.
Two of the most popular pins for weddings are a wedding planning binder and a great timeline for planning. The binder keeps you organized, and the timeline tells you when you should be getting into specifics, like sending savethe-dates or invites. “I’m not using a wedding planner, but I am using weddingbee.com, which I found from a Pinterest link,” said Rausch.
There are also a ton of little wedding gift ideas too; little kits to give your bridesmaids, things to give your groomsmen and favors to hand out to guests. There is even a pin circulating of a toolbox to keep with you on the big day that has important things like Advil, a sewing kit, bobby pins and much more. Whether you’re using it to gather ideas or want to plan your entire wedding, Pinterest is the perfect one-stop shop for everything wedding. The easy-to-use website has millions of ideas to make your day perfect. You can even find links to other websites that help you plan it all out.

The image of a psychotic bride-to-be breaking down in front of the camera as her perfect wedding plans go up in flames makes for gripping, if not quality, television.
o much so, that shows like We TV’s Bridezillas and TLC’s Along for the Bride command big ratings every season. Even with the decline in marriage rates, weddings are still big business and there’s seemingly no bigger business than a volatile bride-to-be. But of course, it takes two to tango. Lost in this whole equation is the (in)significant other: the little discussed, camera-shy groom-to-be. Are men just entirely passive? Are we simply happy to let the love of our life do all the work, driving them to emotional meltdown and physical exhaustion while we stare at the television? To address these controversial questions, I sought the counsel of three local 42-year-old men who dared to defend their lack of involvement in planning the Big Day. The names have been changed to protect the lazy.
Groom 1:
Devin Lane, a USI graduate who lives with his wife and three wonderful children, is desperately trying to explain away the inexcusable burden he placed on his perfect wife, Nelly. “I quickly realized that nothing I tried to do to help was good enough, so I gave up,” he laments. “True, it was only the second day of planning, but I put so much time and effort into that first day – at least 45 minutes. I was simply worn-out.” Lane tearfully recounts the moment when Nelly shot down his suggestion of hiring Ozzy Osbourne to play at the wedding. “She knew how much it meant to me – Ultimate Sin is my favorite album of all-time. It has “Shot in the Dark” on it. After that, my will was broken. It was 8:45 p.m., and we had been hammering away since 8 p.m. I’m only human.”
Groom 2:
Anthony Bacon is a Butler graduate whose English degree and command of language still failed to assist him in forming the question, “Can I help you with the unenviable and incredibly time-consuming task of planning our wedding?” wants to make something clear: he had a bad case of dry-mouth. “The planning of my wedding coincided with the onset of winter, and there was little moisture in the air. I’ve always been sensitive to the change of season,” Bacon explains. Still, he does acknowledge that he could have done more to help his radiant wife, Sherry. “I probably could have sipped water throughout each day – maybe tea or something,” he admits. “But hindsight is always 20/20. I just never imagined that my inability to speak would have such consequences.”
Groom 3:
Jim Stowe, a fanatical Syracuse Orangemen supporter, apparently couldn’t be troubled to support his darling wife Ren, during the planning of their Big Day. “That’s not entirely true,” Stowe contends. “I nodded my head a lot. I may not have lifted a finger to help plan the reception, the wedding or the honeymoon, but I did nod my head at the appropriate times…mostly.” This is where Stowe’s story takes a tragic turn. “At one point, Ren asked if I thought chicken would make a better reception entrée than steak. Instinctively, I nodded. That decision has haunted me to this day. I don’t even like chicken.” Regret still etched on his face all these years later, Stowe hopes that other grooms-to-be can learn from his mistake. “You only get one shot at watching your wife-to-be tirelessly plan your wedding. Don’t screw it up.” —Thomas Ellis •The above accounts may have been exaggerated.• • 12 • www.TriStateBride.com

Spring
Ah, spring. The flowers are blooming. Everything is coming back to life after the gloomy winter, the perfect setting for your wedding. The temperature is usually ideal, after all. It’s not too hot and not too cold. You could have a beautiful outdoor wedding! And did I mention how beautiful everything is when it’s blooming? Oh, but wait. You’re allergic to everything that’s blooming. So is half of your family. But that can be fixed
Summer
Summer is perfect. All of the kids are out of school, it’s vacation weather time. You could plan your wedding around a few of the holidays that would allow for your friends and family to take off work for an extended period of time to enjoy your wedding. But, this is the Midwest. And the Midwest is known for its insane humidity. How will you ever tame your frizzy hair? Perhaps a double layer of hairspray and super keratin treatments prior to the wedding? • 16 • www.TriStateBride.com
with a simple allergy medicine regimen, right? Perhaps you could use a few doses of over-the-counter medicine or a few shots from your allergist? Now, back to how beautiful spring is… With its sudden and often unpredictable rain storms. There is nothing like a terrible storm to ruin your beautiful, perfect day. Forget any outdoor photos or your outdoor wedding for that matter, it’s a monsoon out there.
Forget humidity, you can always battle that! But, oh, it’s usually around 100+ degrees in the summer, especially in the later summer months, when we have our hottest of heat waves. Well, forget that outdoor wedding. You can just have it somewhere nice, inside and air-conditioned.
Tri-State Bride 2013
Fall
Oh, fall. It’s beautiful, especially in this area. The leaves change colors and, oh man, are they beautiful. You could possibly venture up to the beautiful Brown County for your wedding and show everyone how amazing Indiana is in the fall? And let’s not forget the temperature. Oh, my. It’s perfect. Nice, cool weather and a break from the summer heat. Another great opportunity for an outdoor wedding! And those gorgeous leaves would not only make for the perfect wedding backdrop, they would make for perfect wedding photos.
Winter
For obvious reasons, I’m a little biased when it comes to winter. Especially winters in the Tri-State area. However, this winter has given me the ability to be a little less biased, as it’s been relatively warm and lacking in super gloomy days. So, winter. Imagine this: you pull up to your wedding with the perfect snowfall coming from the sky. It looks like something straight out of a movie, those big, puffy snowflakes falling gracefully onto the ground. There are no footprints or yellow snow spots, just the perfect setting for your wedding.
But, oh yeah, you have those allergies. And your fall allergies aren’t kidding around. But like I said nothing that a few trips to the pharmacy can’t fix, right? Ah, but sometimes for no reason at all, the weather plays a nice little trick on you. It becomes unpredictable; sometimes it’s really hot, sometimes it’s freezing cold. Sometimes, it decides to rain all of the sudden, like fall thinks it’s spring or something. But the leaves!
Okay, but let’s be serious about the snow in this area. It’s slushy at best. It’s usually gray within a few hours of it falling, and it lasts about two hours before it turns the grass into mush. So forget the snow, you don’t want snow. Imagine a Christmas-themed wedding. So beautiful, with poinsettias as your flowers. Perfect! Except, half of your family is Jewish and your sister hates the idea of you stealing Christmas and making it all about you, and…
Every season has its pros and cons. It’s up to you to decide which of those pros out-weight the cons and vise versa. It’s no secret that nothing is perfect, so your wedding, gasp! It may have some flaws. But that’s okay. That’s how memories are made. So pick your favorite season, pick where you want your wedding and leave it up to your guests to fend for themselves when you choose Millennium Park in Chicago in the dead of winter. It’s so beautiful; and they can ice skate outdoors! Or, when you choose the Roofless Church in New Harmony in August. Just hand out some personal fans. —Lauren VanCleve Tri-State Bride 2013

You have the ring. You set the date. You are looking through every wedding magazine and Web site, and don’t forget all of the “Platinum Wedding” television shows you are watching. You have a good idea of what you want your special day to convey to your family and friends. ow is the time to make an appointment with the vendors you will use to complete your dream wedding and reception. You, your fiancé and family will have many decisions to make: the dress, ceremony and reception venues, event rental services company, caterer, floral designer, music and everything in between. At this time, always keep in mind your budget for each vendor. Ceremonies are planned both indoors and outdoors. If you desire an outdoor ceremony, it is very important to have a “Plan B” in case of inclement weather. This could be a church or building close to the original site. Unfortunately, you cannot call your rental company on the wedding day expecting a tent to be erected. The equipment is available, but a crew to set up the tent usually is not. At T.R.U. Event Rental, Inc. the “rain call” must be made the Wednesday before the Saturday outdoor ceremony. Make an appointment to visit their large remodeled Display Room. For many couples, their wedding reception will be the largest party they throw in their lifetimes. As with most parties, food and drink are a major component, perhaps only sharing the spotlight with the newly-weds themselves. With the rise in popularity of wedding-related television shows, Pinterest boards and entire blogs devoted to the subject, today’s bride and groom may be feeling overwhelmed with information. So when it comes to caterers and menu planning, where do you start? Now comes the fun part – the food! When choosing the menu for your reception there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. How formal or informal is your reception? In which season are you getting married? What are the venue’s capabilities? Traditionally, wedding receptions have featured multi-course, sit-down dinners or simpler self-serve buffets, but there are plenty of other options. Stein has seen a trend locally toward cocktail party receptions that serve a variety of substantial hors d’oeuvres. “Finger foods encourage guests to mix and mingle, and they tend to be easier on your budget,” she says. Sampling stations, familystyle dinners or even barbecues are other possibilities. Keep in mind your own personal preferences, as well. Was your first date at a Mexican restaurant? Chef Augilar suggests serving mini tacos as an appetizer, or offer a fajitas station. Did your fiancé propose while you were on vacation in Hawaii? Coconut shrimp with mango dipping sauce or fresh tropical fruit would fit the theme perfectly. —Liz Carpenter

hen searching for a reception site, look beyond decorating possibilities and whether there is space for a dance floor. Does it come with an approved list of caterers? Many local facilities, like Evansville’s historic Victory Theatre, have an executive chef or in-house caterer you will work with when planning your menu. At the Victory, Executive Chef Ismael Aguilar offers an extensive menu with both fine dining and casual buffet options. He can also accommodate personal requests. Is the site equipped for your wants? Is there a kitchen on site or will food need to be cooked in advance and transported? If you are holding the reception at an outdoor or “rustic chic” location, you will want to adjust your menu accordingly. Once you have settled on your reception site, you will want to meet with your selected caterer. He or she should have a list of questions that will ultimately help your Big Day flow as smoothly as possible. Among the things the caterer will take into consideration is the size of your guest list, the time of day the reception will be held, age range of the guests, any diet restrictions, whether alcohol will be served and budget guidelines. According to Shannabeth Stein, Catering Manager for the Victory Theatre, “Communication is key. It helps the process tremendously if the couple sits down ahead of time to discuss specific ideas with each other. Then when they come to talk with me, we can walk through their budget, timeline and vision for the event.” Stein works closely with Victory Theatre clients throughout the planning process and will provide them with a clear contract that lists service details and payment terms.
No matter what type of reception you decide to hold, your ultimate goal should be to make your guests feel welcome while expressing who you are as a couple. The right caterer will help you to do all that and more! Call (812) 436-7050 for more information about booking your event at the Victory Theatre. • 28 • www.TriStateBride.com

For those newlyweds not lucky enough to receive a financial windfall, here are some more reasonable but no less exciting and memorable destinations that won’t force you to file bankruptcy.
Lake Tahoe
A perennial honeymoon destination favorite, this large freshwater lake borders California and Nevada. The winter months offer fantastic snow-skiing while the summer time is ripe for water activities like parasailing, jet-skiing and kayaking. Casinos in the area are open all year. The climate is ideal for both winter and summer getaways and the skies are clear and blue. Its art galleries and striking architecture are testaments to the city’s rich cultural history.
Pocono Mountains
Located in northeastern Pennsylvania, this region is one of the nation’s most popular tourist attractions. The beautiful waterfalls, woodlands and 170 miles of winding rivers can transform even the most hardened city dweller. Apart from the numerous camping and hiking opportunities, the area offers great skiing, fishing, hunting and many other outdoor activities. In addition, NASCAR at the Pocono Raceway is an enticing diversion.
Portland, Maine
An affordable romantic getaway, the largest city in Maine has just the right environment for a newlywed couple; its relaxed feel and friendly folks create a welcoming atmosphere. The world class art museum and harbor tours will keep you busy during the day, while the historic hotels will make staying in for the night a delightful option. Not surprisingly, the city’s seafood is first class, fresh and delicious. The local breweries offer seasonal beers to perfectly compliment any dish.
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Located in the Smoky Mountains, this wedding and honeymoon hotspot is a relatively short drive from the tri-state area. The sheer beauty of the national park is worth the trip alone. Man-made wonders include the Ober Gatlinburg ski resort, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Hollywood Star Cars Museum. Hiking, biking and horseback riding opportunities abound, as well as shopping and wine-tasting for the indoor-minded. Also, don’t forget Dolly Parton’s Dollywood amusement park in nearby Pigeon Forge.
Napa Valley, California
One of the premier travel destinations in the world, this romantic wine-tasting haven is heaven for a couple looking to unwind. he also stars in her own reality television show, Brides of Beverly Hills on TLC. Renee travels the world buying and bringing to her salon the latest and most exciting fashions from around the world and has an impressive celebrity clientele list. Tri-State Bride caught up with Renee to get some good advice for the Midwest brides of 2013. Tri-State Bride (TSB): What should a bride be prepared for when going gown shopping? Renee Strauss (RS): When a bride goes gown shopping she should be prepared for where the wedding will take place and some of idea of the overall look that she’s trying to achieve. She should also be open-minded because a professional may suggest something she hadn’t thought of. TSB: What are the current trends in bridal gowns for each season in 2013? RS: For a winter I like silk satin duchese. It is the most luxurious of bridal fabrics. For spring I like a silk-faced satin organza. There’s a lot of body and bounce to the fabric. For
summer I like silk organza or tulle fabrics for the light and freshness. They’re very pretty for summertime. For fall I like silk taffeta and would recommend it for a year round look. It’s a versatile fabric that works in all looks. TSB: Should a bride try to “match” her dress to her bridesmaids and vice versa? Why or why not? RS: I like when bridesmaids dresses compliment the bridal gown. When they reflect the style it works best. If the look she’s going for is romantic, the bridesmaids need to mimic the aesthetic. They need to be a compliment to the bride and not be cookie cutter. TSB: What advice do you have for a bride on a budget? RS: Buy the best gown she can afford in her price range. Decide if you’re going for quality, for the fabric and what works best to make you happy .If you’ve got a budget stick to it. She can get very inexpensive accessories, like making your own veil from a craft store to achieve your look for less. TSB: No spending limit? RS: Come to Renee Strauss! Make sure you don’t leave out a detail – go for the details. Buy stunning shoes, headpieces and an amazing gown. Complete your ensemble by spoiling yourself! TSB: Any advice for the bride on looking her best for the big day? RS: By the time the big day comes I would hope that she bought the gown that she cannot wait to put on and that she doesn’t want to take off. I would hope that she has the best people helping her with her hair and makeup, or if she’s doing it all herself, that she gives herself enough time to do it to make her happy. If you feel good on the inside you’ll look perfect and radiant on the outside. The best is yet to come! — Julie Buente

There are few days in a young girl’s life more important than her wedding day. It is the beginning of her new family.
has worked in the hospitality and wedding reception industry in Evansville for more than 30 years. Prior to coming to Evansville he was a creative director in television and radio. “I like to combine my experience in radio and TV production with the idea of hosting a hospitality event. A wedding reception is a like live show. The bride is the star and she has a leading man, the groom. The bride writes the script. It is my job to work with the bride to produce that show.” Hoskins concedes that his favorite part of any reception is the food preparation and presentation. He prepares dishes ranging from Mediterranean to northern European and Asian cuisines, to earthy down home southern country cooking. ”Before I tell a bride what I do, I like to listen to what she wants. The bride always knows what her wedding day looks like.” Chef Hoskins is ready and willing to create the cuisine that best expresses the life you want to share. “Ultimately food is about people, their history, their lives, their beliefs.” Chef Hoskins extends his personal invitation to prospective brides, mothers of brides, grooms and families to sit down with him to discuss how to make their wedding dreams an affordable reality. —Paul Hoskins
