Kenny Kent Jazz, Wine and Arts Festival

E

very year, the Evansville Philharmonic Guild blasts Downtown into a heap of dizzying jazz renditions and strolling musicians, showered in wine and dessert tastings. The Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz, Wine and Arts Festival premieres September 15th, and will take the city night by storm from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Featured on Main Street and running between 2nd and 6th streets, you can expect to run into family members and old colleagues as this little section of downtown pulls out the cork and turns up the music. The event is 21 and older and for advanced tickets at $20, you can have in on one of September’s most talked about nights with your closest friends. Wineries from across Indiana will gather to tantalize wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts with their most provocative bottles of vino. The best of vineyards from Bedford, Indianapolis, New Albany and beyond will all convene on Main Street to boast their bottles and entertain Evansville’s dinners. Of course, wine without food is the day without the night, so expect the streets to be lined with some of the most diverse and celebrated restaurants in the Evansville area. If you’re in the mood for exotic cuisine, Kanpai will be offering their signature Asian fusion dishes and Acropolis will feature their fine Mediterranean plates. Other classic eateries will be on the ticket, including Lorenzo’s, Blush Ultra Lounge, Cavanaugh’s and Salad World. Over sixteen local and regional Jazz groups will set the mood for the evening’s fest. With 3 stages between 2nd and 6th Street, gala-goers will be able

8 | September

to weave between the striking array of performers, wine glass in hand. The night will feature internationally renowned jazz pianist Monika Herzig. The Indiana University faculty member and tri-state seasoned night club performer, is set to play both celebrated jazz standards and skilled originals. Keep an eye out for Alfred Savia, the nineteen year musical director and conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra. He’ll be leading the playful Big Al & The Philharmonicats for a few hours near 5th Street. Other esteemed veterans of the jazz community to play for the show include the Carl Rodenburg Band, The Browne Sisters, Barbara Santora & Jazzin’ and others are soon to be announced. Arriving a tad before schedule wouldn’t hurt the evening either. Strolling funk musicians will open the night from 3:30 p.m.-4 p.m., giving early birds a chance to whimsically scope out the intricate vendor line-up. Same-day ticket prices will bump up to $25 a piece, and will only accept cash payments at the will-call booth on 6th street. But who really cares about a $5 price difference when one ticket grants you access to (drum roll) 3 food and wine tents with unlimited wine samples. Yes. Unlimited. The generous hosts behind the event will also provide you with a free wine glass to tote around as you throw all caution to the wind. They recommend bringing a designated driver or saving a taxi number, just to be on the safe side. —Jacqueline Greenberg

GC: The human voice moves me

G

the most, because I identify with it the most. I can detect its honesty and emotion more than any other instrument. The human voice is tied so tightly to the player that the two cannot help but be as one. N4U: Your style has been dubbed ‘Southern Gothic.’ What does that mean to you?

rayson Capps is a man who dons a cloak of unrestraint stitched and woven with woe, turmoil, utter elation and unabashed love.

He is a singer and songwriter from Alabama who holds a simplistic mindset when it comes to life and music. Although, I’m sure if you would ask him, life and music are one in the same. Capp’s lyrics command such emotional heft they take the listener up to celestial highs and down to subterranean lows. His songwriting paired with a southern cocktail of blues, country, bluegrass, and jazz make for a truly unique audio experience. Two years ago, Capps joined a new group of musicians called the Lost Cause Minstrels after separating from the Stumpknockers. His fifth and latest studio album carries the band’s name and beautifully showcases all of their immense talent. News4U (N4U): What makes the South ideal for rich music and deep songwriting?

Grayson Capps (GC): Bigoted Christians, corrupt politicians, greedy businessmen, women in their summer dresses, alligators and astronauts. I don’t think the South

is any different than any other place for songwriting. There has been a fascination with the South, I guess, because it epitomizes and empathizes with the human condition that the whole planet endures. I don’t know, I guess to answer the question concisely I would say, extraordinary oppression lends itself to extraordinary expression. N4U: Why is the ‘vagabond’ lifestyle so appealing to you?

GC: Southern Gothic to me is an old,

boarded-up Nazarene Church outside of Brewton, Ala. with chickens running in and out of it, while an ol’ mangy puppy sits rustling up a cloud of dust scratchin’ the hell out of some fleas in the bare, dirt yard. Mancel Travis stands in the doorway drinking Boone’s Farm Country Quencher and smoking Pall Mall’s. N4U: Describe the feeling you get when you experience your music/ lyrics truly influencing someone at their core?

GC: It’s very similar to the feeling you get after removing a splinter from a

GC: The vagabond lifestyle is appealing loved ones foot and seeing them sigh to me, because it is living with true freedom. When you have nothing you are ready to live and experience life fully.

N4U: If you had the chance to play live with one musician alive or dead, who would it be and why?

GC: I would love to play with Woody Guthrie, because he loved the power and simplicity of music. He used to say, “Mostly I play two chords, but sometimes I play three to impress the ladies.” That opens up music to every man and woman.

with relief.

N4U: What was your mentality during the recording of The Lost Cause Minstrels?

GC: My “mentality” at the time turned into the record. Part of why I make records, is to record where I am at a certain point in time and space. —Nick Durcholz Grayson Capps will be performing at Doc’s Night Club on 1305 Stringtown Rd. in Evansville on September 8th at 10 p.m.

Funk in the City Art Show

D

owntown Evansville’s art district awaits one of its most inviting celebrations of the fall, the Funk in the City Art Show. A smorgasbord of hand-crafting artisans will line Haynie’s Corner at 2nd Street and Adams Avenue to sell and inspire the neighboring and regional community. 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the anticipated event, and will run Saturday, September 29th from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is $5 a pop, and free for children, or “really anyone who’s under 18,” said Jamie Morris of Funk in the City. In what has become a staple in the art’s district, the festival has bonded with friends of the neighborhood over the years. Attendees can expect a relaxed, positive atmosphere. Ticketing and pricing are flexible, and IDs aren’t by any means necessary at the door. Funk in the City narrows in on hand-crafted, one of a kind items that carry the personality of their maker. As the event has grown and gained larger followings over the last decade, artists from as far as several states over have travelled to Evansville to be a part of the beloved gathering. The show’s creators strive to feature a mix of both celebrated, regionally acclaimed artists and skilled local talents. This year, we can expect anywhere between 100 to 120 artist booths lined up and ready to show off their work. Local favorites from previous years will be in the mix, including traditional painters Nikki Pritchett, Cynthia Watson and Keith Boyd. The festival prefers to focus on individual artists over full gallery features, to an overwhelming response. Artists’ submissions pour into Funk in the City left and right, eager to get in on an event that attracts not only art lovers but big time collectors. “We attract an audience that is coming to buy. They aren’t just coming to look,” said Morris. “They know this is their opportunity to purchase high quality art.” As the street fest is an outdoor event, the turn out and overall reception may come down to the whims of Mother Nature. Yet even with sour odds factored in, Evansville can expect Haynie’s Corner packed with six to ten thousand art patrons. The festival holders allow a few quality dining establishments to provide food that gives a welcomed upgrade from the usual hamburgers and hot dogs. Acropolis, Kirby’s Fine Dining, Zesto’s, Jeanne’s Gelato and Greek’s Pizza will dish out creations of their own on Saturday. Key to the festival’s longstanding ties to the Evansville art community is its consistent dedication to funding local cultural programs. For the past 3 years, one hundred percent of the money collected from artist fees and ticket purchases

has been donated to the after school programs of the Boys and Girls Club of America. The festival’s fund promises fine art programs taught by reputable local artists, with focuses in fields that would be otherwise costly to study independently. Kids will be able to enroll in programs for painting, digital photography and world hand-drumming. In its ten year run, Funk in the City has donated over $30,000 to various artistic causes in support of their mission. —Jacqueline Greenberg To get a sneak peak of this year’s line-up, visit www.funkinthecity.com.

Needtobreathe at the

Victory Theatre

O

n Friday, September 21 st the people of Evansville will have the chance to see one of the fastest up-and-coming bands in the Contemporary/Christian/Alternative Rock genre, Needtobreathe at the Victory Theatre on their Reckoning Tour with special guests Parachute and Drew Holcomb. Needtobreathe, all one word and featured also in all caps as NEEDTOBREATHE, is a grassroots band out of South Carolina that was founded 13 years ago by brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart and Seth Bolt. Together with former drummer and founding member Joe Stillwell, they have released four studio albums, Daylight (2006), The Heat (2007), The Outsiders (2009) and their most recent The Reckoning (2011.) Their current album The Reckoning has peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and their hot single “Slumber,” reached number 26 on the Christian Rock Charts. In an interview on their new album and Reckoning Tour, Bear Rinehart stated about what it means for them and their fans, “This is the first record we made where we’ve been aware of where we are as people, as a band. And that made it really difficult to do, but at the same time it’s amazing for me to look at it and see what that was, and what we were going through and what it’s going to mean. That’s still kind of unfolding every day, but it’s a really big time for our band and I can’t wait for people to hear it. Not only to hear it, but to fall in love with it, listen to it more and more and start this relationship we’ve been working on.” —Julie Buente Needtobreathe is playing at the Victory Theatre on Friday, September 21st at 8 p.m. For more information on the band, their special guests and tickets for the show, visit www.needtobreathe.net/tour-dates or www.facebook.com/needtobreathe. FFestival erdinand Folk T

he picture is a sleepy, rural setting populated mostly by flora and fauna in or nearby the scattering of a town with no more than one stoplight. Suddenly, an explosion of eccentricity bursts forth, seemingly from the bosom of Mother Nature herself in the form of art, music and cuisine. The Third Annual Ferdinand Folk Festival in the small town of Ferdinand, Ind. is a culmination of the romantic idea that most every outdoor festival has been based upon. It is simple and beautiful. It is a massive amount of positive social, physical, mental and spiritual energy emanating from a rustic place that is normally soft-spoken at best. As with all outdoor music festivals, the Ferdinand Folk Festival has its own personality. It has no unnecessary frills to distract the festival goer from the stars of the show: the music, art and food. The communal sense is a large part of it as well, because the Ferdinand Folk Festival proudly hosts local music, artists and other vendors while also reaching beyond to include more widely known

16 | September

musicians like former Men at Work member and solo artist Colin Hay. This communal sense is further galvanized by the festival’s family friendly atmosphere boasting activities for kids as well as adults. The festival will be held on September 15th in Ferdinand’s 18th Street Park. As the name suggests, most of the musicians do boast a folky sound of one variation or another. The musical lineup is Colin Hay, Adam Hood, Daddy, Vandaveer, Andrea Wirth and Beau Troesch. Adam Hood is more on the country side of folk. He has toured with Miranda Lambert and has been record by Lee Ann Womack and the Eli Young Band. Daddy is Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack; they are a duo from Nashville whose style is a mish-mash of country, blues and rock n’ roll. Vandaveer is another duo hailing from Ohio that specializes in emotionladen Americana. Andrea Wirth is a singer/songwriter from Evansville who has a devoted fan base and commands a lovely voice. Beau Troesch is a Ferdinand original who is quite skilled with his acoustic guitar and his trusty harmonica. He is also a talent songwriter.

2012 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

The Ferdinand Folk Festival will also offer a variety of extra activities for festival goers including a 135 foot tall zipline for the adventurous. For those who prefer more educational activities there will be a songwriting workshop, a falconry demonstration with various birds of prey and a solar energy demonstration featuring a tour of a solar-powered home. Additionally, there will be a designated jamming area open to all festival goers regardless of the level of their musical inclination. As mentioned previously, there will be plenty of fun to be had for children as well. Kid’s activities will include theatre, face-painting, storytelling and Harmony by Hands educational programming. There are few opportunities in the area to experience such a large array of culture in a quaint, relaxed and fun atmosphere. F

or the 15th year running, Evansville residents will be coming out in droves on Saturday, September 22nd to show their support for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Since 2000, Evansville’s event has held the national title for having the greatest percentage of the community population (the tri-state area) that participates in the race, numbering about 15,000 residents. This 15th Anniversary race will feature a special opening ceremony that will include approximately 900 tri-state breast cancer survivors. Among them will be Sheila Seiler, Executive Director for the Evansville Tri-State Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Seiler’s journey with the organization began when she started volunteering after being diagnosed with breast cancer when she was just 25. She has now been cancer-free for 22 years, and the Race for the Cure continues to be a highlight of her year. “It emotionally drains you, [but] knowing that what you’re doing is making a difference makes it easier to get up every morning and keep truckin’ on,” said Seiler. stay in the area, the remaining 25% of money they raise goes to Komen’s national office, where it is distributed specifically for research. This office is still the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world. It starts at 7 a.m. on Main Street with an Expo area with sponsors, giveaway items, and entertainment. The Survivor Parade of Pink starts at 8 a.m., followed at 9 a.m. by the race itself-a 5K run/walk and at 9:20 a.m. a 1-mile fun run/walk. Both of these races start at the intersection of Cherry Street and Riverside Drive and finish at Court Street and Riverside Drive. Participants can also vote ($1/vote) for their favorite team t-shirts after the race. At 10:30 a.m. will be the awards ceremony, once again on the main stage at the intersection of Main and Riverside. “It’s an emotional morning but it’s such a good emotion, it’s a cathartic experience for those who are going through breast cancer to know that they have all those sisters standing with them,” said Seiler. —S. the Orchard to the Table

T

he perfect apple pie can be an elusive quest. Even for experienced bakers, pie is more daunting than cake or cookies because there is no cheating with a box mix. Instead you are forced to use fresh materials, and for the best taste you also have to tackle a homemade crust. Baking from scratch though, is easier said than done. From unworkable dough, to soggy or misshapen crust, to runny filling, there are a number of obstacles that can stand between you and an edible and aesthetically-pleasing dessert. The first step on the road to pastry perfection is a stop at Joe Engelbrecht’s Fourth Generation Orchard, located at 16820 Petersburg Rd. on the north side of Evansville. In September, Engelbrecht’s will have the following apples in season: Jonathan, Golden, Red Delicious, Braeburn, Winesap, Mutsu, Fuji and last but not least, the key ingredient to a successful pie: the Granny Smith. The Granny Smith apples from Engelbrecht’s are suitable for pie baking because this firm, tart apple variety holds its shape while baking. It’s up to you if you would like to harvest your own or purchase them pre-picked. There are a number of apple pie recipes to choose from. Bakers Cate Sisco and Lora Ferguson, co-owners of Piece of Cake Bakery, use their grandmother’s recipe that was passed down from their mother. Novice bakers though, can start with a recipe from the ever reliable Joy of Cooking or reference a

cooking

Engelbrecht’s: From

recipe found on any number of internet cooking sites such as allrecipes.com, pillbsury.com or foodnetwork.com. Because making a pie is more of an art than a science, following written directions may not be enough to take into account all of the different factors that may affect baking. “Thin slicing is the way to go. If your slices are too thick, you will have pockets with no apples. You also want to make sure that your apples are cut to the same size so that they bake evenly,” said Ferguson. She follows with saying, “Once you mix everything together, have the patience to let it sit and macerate before putting it into your crust. It will juice while it is baking, but this helps marry the flavor. Filling your pie crust high is also imperative as the mixture will settle during baking. ” “Lard makes a flakier pie crust, and using an egg wash gives the crust a pretty shine,” said Sisco. She also recommends that bakers vent the top of the pie crust by cutting slits into it. Alternately, you can vent it using a decorative cutter from a cooking store to make it prettier. A handful of local amateur bakers also weighed in on the topic. Cinda Sue Nelson Sanderson recommends that bakers freeze the lard shortening or butter and put it through a shredder of food processor, then stir in flour, to make a flakey crust. To keep your pie moist, Jim Stephens gives our final recommendation: “Make sure there is plenty of juice from the apples poured into the pie [before baking].” —Nikki Davis Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2012

Pita Pan

4222 Bell Rd • Newburgh, IN 812-853-9555

T

he food culture in the Middle East and the Mediterranean is among the most mature, diverse and decadent in the entire world. The culinary roots go miles deep in these areas because of their close proximity to the largest spice markets known to man and their ties to the spice trade of old. Pita Pan in Newburgh offers the tri-state a glimpse into the multi-faceted, flavor fairyland of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Owner and Operator Hossam “Sam” Habiba utilizes a blend of Egyptian spices for all of his meats giving them a sultry and savory taste that sends the taste buds on a thrill ride. This spice profile is the foundation upon which Pita Pan stands. In addition, the restaurant also offers many vegetarian options, whole grilled chickens for carry-out and dishes that play on American palates like gyro nachos, the Philly cheese steak pita and the pita pan pies. On a wider scale, Pita Ban boasts a full menu sure to please any taste, adventurous or critical for a reasonable price. Having four dishes of various color, style and flavor set before you in a quaint and minimalistic atmosphere really gives you the impression of being inside a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean home in which you are the guest of honor. The food escalates the feeling with robust meats, hearty starches and tangy vegetables; all the traits of comfort food the world over.

Pita Pan’s Greek Salad

What’s Cookin’

Evansville has many Mexican and Hispanic restaurants, so when I visit one for the first time,

Pita Pan’s Mixed Appetizer & Mixed Grill

The first dish I tried was Pita Pan Mixed Appetizer featuring humus that had subtle earthy tones with a hint of sweetness and an ideal light and fluff y texture. It also features Pita Pan’s fresh, spicy eggplant salad, babaghonush and stuffed grape leaves. Second on the table were the gyro nachos. The fried pita chips with a crispy outside and a fluff y, soft inside reminded me of carnival treats as a child. Couple this culinary nostalgia with the smoky, rich flavor of the gyro meat and melted cheese on top and you have a high caliber, though high calorie crowd pleaser. Third down the line came Pita Pan’s Mixed Grill, a bed of yellow rice with lamb (shish), gyro, chicken and kofta kabob laid upon it. This dish is a meat lover’s delight. The lamb is very tender with a full figured flavor and a slight gaminess to it, the chicken has an earthy taste with a bit of smokiness and the kofta boasts a unique taste ideal for the curious carnivore. Last but not least, was Pita Pan’s Greek salad that would easily fetch a caesar’s approval but what really shined through in the meal were Pita Pan’s sauces. The cucumber sauce is a sharp, minty concoction that can be made spicy; it is only so hot that it doesn’t over-power the flavor. Also, there is the garlic sauce that is tangy and savory, which goes perfectly with the lamb. Do not miss out on the unique food, friendly service and comfortable atmosphere Pita Pan has to offer! —Nick Durcholz

She was just one class short of a Culinary Arts degree but focused on both simultaneously. “From there I worked with Kerry Magee (Local Chef Spotlight in August) at SMG as a Sous Chef and I was there for just right at a year. After SMG, an Executive Chef position landed in my lap at Willow Park retirement home. So, I was there as Executive Chef for three years. Then, I landed the Director of Food Services position and I’ve been here-it’ll be two years in October,” said Jackson. Jackson’s love for food was sparked by spending quality time in her grandmother’s kitchen baking breads, canning and cooking. “[My grandmother] was always in the kitchen and she always seemed to have fun with it. It never seemed like a chore for her,” recalled Jackson. As a child she was also directly involved with the processing and preparation of garden-fresh produce. “Food has always been something that is a part of me. It’s more than just a meal three times a day,” said Jackson. Stemming from the home-style roots of her introduction to the wide world of food, Jackson’s selfprofessed culinary strength is “fattening foods.” More specifically, Jackson loves to barbeque and she swoons over having a smoker to use at West River. In March, Jackson took third place in a culinary competition with just a half a point separating her from second place and one point separating her from first place. Even with a great showing and esteemed effort Jackson remains cautious but grateful. “Competitions scare me because I am such a perfectionist. I don’t like to fail and I think it is why I go in with a lot of hesitation. Luckily, [my assistant] she kinda keeps me under wraps when we go to competition but it was a delight to go.” For Natasha Jackson she is quite comfortable where she is getting to know the people she cooks for personally. She gets to know what food they like and don’t like, and get to socialize with them all. She thrives on the sense of community.

Food has always been something that is a part of me. It’s more than just a meal three times a day,”

—Jackson.

As far as the future goes it seems that Jackson is solely dedicated to strengthening, understanding, and educating her team at West River. As the subtle southern drawl began to quicken and sharpen it was easy to see Jackson’s passion for her position and her workers. “I’m really big on not being a boss, but being a leader and leading by example. Letting [my employees] know you’re going to burn something, you’re going to break something- but we have to get through it. I’m really big on teamwork. It’s being able to teach them to push a little harder and go a little harder and get out of their comfort zone.” —Nick Durcholz Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2012

he 2012 North Huskies Football program will begin their first season in the history of the school, with their own football stadium. The Huskies return 7 starters on offense and 5 starters on defense to open the season. Quarter back Max Mooney returns, after passing for nearly 1,000 yards his Junior season. Max’s ability to recover from an offseason knee injury will play a huge role in the success of this year’s North Football Team. Other offensive starters who return include Blake Howell and DuVante’ Lane who rushed for 500 yards. Brock Underwood returns as the Huskies top receiver along with Drew Watters at tight end. The North defense is led by returning middle linebacker and leading tackler Drew Watters. The defensive line includes all-city and all-conference defensive end Mike Johnson as well as the talented Teddy Wilbourn at defensive tackle. The Huskies have a trio of talented sophomores in Ford Johnson, Chase Whitler, and Zac Turi who will play significant time on both sides of the ball. I am very optimistic about North’s chances for a successful season in their new home. —Mike Wilson For more information on North High School, please visit www.evscschools.com/north

n terms of the upcoming season, the Bears are anything but bad news. They are back and ready to brawl. Head Coach Andy Owens has led the Central den for six years and plans for a successful season. In 2011, he led the Bears to a 4-5 record in the regular season and to their first sectional title in over two decades. Other members of the Central football coaching staff include Defense Coordinator Rob Kane and Offensive Coordinator Sean Bennett. The Bears will have six offensive returning starters but have lost Kyle Neidig and Jacob Hester who both put up big numbers for Central last year. As a result, the Bear’s offense might need some retooling. Central’s defense will boast seven returning starters including Tight End Al Cromwell, Defensive Lineman Chris Sweeney, Jesse Hohl and Austen Pace. “Our sophomore class has a lot of good players who need to be developed but Ben Williams and Anthony Stewart are two of the best players in the area for their age,” said Head Coach Andy Owens. —Nick Durcholz For more information on Central High School, please visit sites. www.evscschools.com/Central

F.J. Reitz Panthers

he 2012 F.J. Reitz football team is excited about its prospects for the upcoming season. Our football team had a great off-season in the weight room and we look forward to making positive strides throughout the year, with the hopes of playing our best football come playoff time. Our varsity/J.V. team will have between 70-75 players (10th12th graders) that will be competing for starting spots beginning on July 30th. We have many positions to fill due to graduation and our players have been preparing themselves throughout the summer to achieve success. Our football program has high expectations every year and this year will be no different. We feel like these expectations cause our players and staff to work that much harder to represent our high school and our community in a proper manner. Our theme this year is “Pride, Family, & Tradition”. All three of these words come up often when thinking about what Reitz football is supposed to be about. —Tony Lewis For more information on F.J. localtalent Casey Williams

C

asey Williams knew at a very early age that he would like to pursue a career in music. This talented musician, who is all of 24, has spent nearly all of his life playing music and perfecting his skills. The Santa Claus, Ind. native graduated in 2010 from USI, having studied advertising and public relations. I listened to Casey’s outstanding original music on myspace.com and was extremely impressed with the depth of his talent. He not only writes the music, but performs vocals and instrumentals. His style of music could be described as ‘original vintage,’ as you hear many styles and influences such as blues, soul, R & B and rock. He gains influence from great musicians such as B. B. King, Marvin Gaye, Ray LaMontagne, John Mayer, The Allman Brothers and Led Zeppelin. Casey is a modern day Renaissance man who has masterfully combined many styles into his original songs.

Williams is the product of a home with talented musicians, he recognized early that he could and should take advantage of all opportunities to learn many instruments. He picked up the guitar at age 6 and began piano lessons at age 8. Additionally, he immersed himself into mastering multiple instruments such as the ukelele, mandolin, drums and bass guitar. His parents have provided great support in his quest to play and produce great music. He found a passion in many different genres of music and spent much time playing some good ol’ rock & roll by greats Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers and more. “One of my clearest early memories of learning to play guitar was staying up late with my dad watching an Allman Brothers concert he had on tape. I would play to “Melissa” over and over until I could play the guitar solo,” said Williams. Mr. Williams is currently wrapping up recording his first album which is due out at Christmas 2012. It is being recorded locally at Ashbrook Studios and also in Nashville at Starstruck Studios. Watch his myspace and facebook pages for release details. Additionally, Casey plays a pretty rigorous schedule of two to three shows per week, and you can check his online media outlets for upcoming appearance details. You may also contact him with questions for booking shows. Fortunately, Evansville has many hidden gems, and Casey Williams is in fact a brilliant diamond. I suggest catching this young man’s shows before he graduates to the next level of performances and is no longer available locally. Casey definitely has a mature attitude about his music to match his mature talent and he recently told me: “Whether or not I play music as a full time career, it will always be a huge part of my life and something that gives me a lot of joy.” —Lanea Stagg

soundboard Brett Siler

A

s a fresh adventurer to the Midwest, I am regularly thrown backwards by how often the elusive Brett Siler has levitated to the tops of my casual conversations. In restaurants, with co-workers, strangers, new friends- Brett is gushed over, regarded with unfaltering adoration from such a diverse range of locals. Through sound engineering, music or film, Brett has woven himself into the deepest recesses of the Evansville art scene, becoming a pivotal staple in its accelerating growth. His beginnings as a solo musician have transformed into multiple collaborations, widespread tours, hailed studio albums and the debut of Mother Brain Sound Infrastructure; Brett’s recording studio and passion project of the last ten years. At the impressionable age of 13, the Siler family migrated from Cincinnati to Evansville in 1996. Alone and hungering to kill time in a strange new town, Brett picked up the guitar. “I figured out how to play ‘Forming’ by The Germs was super psyched about it and [was] hooked after that. I actually consider that moment to be when I consciously decided I really liked music and wanted to play it every day,” said Siler.

The nine year run of Brett’s longest project Stationary Odyssey, opened canals of experimentation that would shape the backbone of Siler’s characteristic avant-garde style, partnered with bassist Aaron Tanner, the band released ten albums. They worked with legends from The Pixies, performed on a Sonic Youth tribute record and had their first EP listed as one of the 15 Most Important Releases of 2004 in Japan. Brett’s sincere praise for fellow Evansville artists speaks through his loyal repertoire. He’s dipped in other countless bands; playing guitar for Detroit-based Chill bite, and touring with Gratis. Siler’s steady sources of work seem to have sprouted organically; not by means of luck but through a refined openness that registers with like-minded bohemians of sound and pleasure. “I try not to let my [own] or anyone else’s ego or insecurities get in the way of the music,” said Siler. “That’s very important, because it can ruin really good ideas and a good time very quickly.” And then of course, there’s Mother Brain Sound Infrastructure, Brett’s baby and decade-long obsession zipped into one cozy Newburgh recording studio. The man has captured over 300 recording sessions and is soon to spit out mixes from hip-hop artist Q, indie band Quin, Siler’s sideproject L’Shem and so much more. In sound engineering Brett unlocked an ocean of experience through his handson dynamic, endowing him with the un-teachable gifts of flexibility and creative intuition. Brett has a translucent approach that comes from monk-like dedication to the trade. “You must be very adaptable and very, very patient,” said Siler. Recently, Brett has been the host of the house show The Avant Garde Concert Series on which resident musicians of experimentation gather with beer for a relaxing night in the spirit of jazz. For a heads up on the next show in the series, follow Brett Siler on Facebook. —Jacqueline Greenberg A brief catalogue of Brett Siler’s work can be viewed at the following pages: Store.stationaryodyssey.com/ sludgephone.bandcamp.com/ album/a-stereophonic-experience-in-sludge (Siler’s first album) motherbrainsoundinfrastructure.bandcamp.com Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2012

Annual Native American Days Native Mississippian culture, and to engage forum members in simple tribal traditions. The amassing popularity of such gatherings sparked the public initiation of the Native American Days festival in the early 80’s, and has been growing ever since. Traditional dancers, demonstrators, entertainers and musicians convene annually to the tune of 10,000 tri-state visitors a year.

W

hile venturing th r o u g h th e sprawled, mystical paths of Angel Mounds on a late September hike, you may halt; frozen in your tracks when your ears come upon Native American shrills and chants. Following the eruption of sounds and the scent of warm food, you’d discover that your luck brought you to the 30th Annual Native American Days festival of Evansville. A beloved staple in Southern Indiana to locals and tourists alike, the Angel Mounds State Historic Site is home to pre-historic Native American mounds, dating back to 1100 C.E. As a National Historic Landmark, globally esteemed speakers have convened here for decades to discuss early

64 | September

The festival’s focal point remains the contagious rhythms and dances displayed by their dedicated professional performers. Beyond annotated speeches and worksheets, nothing puts festivalgoers in the spirit of the event like seeing and hearing remarkable traditions move and sway before their eyes. The gathering strives to serve as an opportunity for Native Americans to celebrate their heritage with the community, and to give locals an interactive experience with their culture. Celebrated artists such as Michael Jacobs and the internationally acclaimed performance ensemble Estun-Bah have graced the festival with their cultural, artistic ties in previous years. This September, onlookers will find the Braveheart singers Northern Drum group and the Red Tail Thunder Southern Drum group leading the center dance circle

with accompaniment from world-class Native dancers. The spectacle in its entirety is composed of four main events: a dance circle, educational demonstrations and handson activities, concessions and the Indian Market. The market will feature the hand-crafted artistry of Native American vendors from around the country. Some vendors will be able to demonstrate to visitors the making and perfecting of their individual crafts. The Indian Market is where you’ll be able to find traditional pieces to take home such as jewelry, musical instruments, pipes, handbags, dream catchers, bows and arrows and carved antler. Native American Days has also announced new hands-on activities for spectators to engage in, including flint knapping, native gardening, drum construction, canoe making and plenty more. Additionally, for the first time in the festival’s history, there will be a lacrosse demonstration illustrating one of the most beloved Native American games. Concession food will mix American classics, such as hot dogs and hamburgers with festival specialties like frybread, buffalo burgers and lavender lemonade. The spirited staff of Angel Mounds looks forward to making this September an opportunity to embrace a unique culture with roots that are vital to the tristate’s heritage. —Jacqueline Greenberg

The 30th Annual Native American Days will run from Friday, September 21st to Sunday, September 23rd. Admission is $6 per adult, and $3 per child. For a detailed event guide, visit angelmounds.org/events/native-american-days/

Ratings are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat

Omission

Four Horsemen Irish-style Red Ale

Christy Moore – 4

The pour has a moderately cloudy golden brown hue, which catches the light like the glimmer in a jack-o-lanterns wink. This pumpkin wheat ale is not far off from the flavor of the Shock Top brew I normally reach for if there is no Blue Moon on tap. Even though they say the Mohawk is the new mullet, the orange wedge guy on the bottle sports his with pride. With Halloweens favorite gourd and secret spices added to their classic recipe the infused taste enhancers are subtle if almost entirely not present. But this is not much of a detractor. It maintains its integrity of being a really good beer.

Jabez Martinez – 4

I love the regular Shock Top, but this was just average. It is a hazy, orange colored beer. I could smell the nutmeg and spices that go along with similar pumpkin beers but this one was a little light on the flavor. I could taste the pumpkin and spices, but they were a little weak. If you never had a pumpkin beer and would like to try one, this is a good starter. Nothing flashy, just average but I still liked it.

Nick D – 3.5

If nothing else this is an ideal beer for the fall. The pumpkin is present but it is subtle and as it hits the back of your through the flavor comes out swinging before it dies out. Along with the pumpkin there is a slight sweetness that teases the taste buds. This beer isn’t anything to shout about but it is very enjoyable.

Christy Moore – 1

When it enters the glass it resembles soy sauce. I think they are tooting their own horn with the slogan “We make beer, really, really good beer.” This is yet to be proven. From my stand point the Horsemen can trot on by. With the names of these apocalyptic riders being Conquest, War, Famine and Death, maybe this rather unappealing ale is intended for Vikings or Warlords. Who like a beverage that bites them back? However, as I have mentioned before, I’m not a fan of the bitter so if it’s your thing, drink up and enjoy! But it’s not for me.

Jabez Martinez – 3.5

This was a dark red entry. It was a little low on carbonation, but not bad overall. It had a dark amber color and did not have much of a head. I did like the fact it was brewed in Mishawaka, Indiana. It had a nice malt, caramel and a light coffee flavor. It also had a little hop bitterness and was very easy to drink.

Nick D – 3

This beer is not typical of other red ales, it is like a diet red. The scent, the color and the taste are subpar for the course. It has a subtle taste but it slightly weak for a ‘red’ brew. The Four Horseman’s strength is that this is the smoothest red brew I have ever tasted. This one has potential but it’s just not quite there.

2012 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Christy Moore – 1

Whether it be the “O” Mission or just the “O” face you’re going for, you are normally guaranteed better chances of reaching these goals with a few intoxicating beverages in the mix. This pours to a light clear urine color and like all Widmer brothers concoctions I’ve sampled to date, that’s more or less what it tastes like with the bitter hoppy trademark taste they seem to cling to. So the Magnet Lifting the O away on the label has the repelling effect on my taste buds.

Jabez Martinez – 2

This is a clear, amber colored beer with good carbonation and looked pretty good. I just couldn’t get over the very grassy aroma. I could taste some sweet and bitterness in this beer but the smell was a little too much for me to try to enjoy this beer.

Nick D– 4

This beer is what American lagers should be. It achieves being smooth and accessible but boasts a substantial taste. The smell is even substantial. You can actually smell the grains as opposed to most other American lagers which has no real scent at all. This one gives the King of Beers a run for its money.

Curious Traveler Shandy

would recommend it to anyone that wants a break from the more common brews. Upon final glance at the handle bar mustache on the bottle for some reason it brings to mind the local punk rock saying that “Richard may be a smarty... But Dicks a Genius.”

Jabez Martinez – 5

Christy Moore – 4

I was very excited about this one because of the spectacles and amazing robust stash on the label, which led me to lovingly nickname it Mr. Pringles, goes a Boozin’. It pours a cloudy honey golden color with a nice blanket of white. Shandy is beer mixed with a citrus-flavored soda or carbonated lemonade, ginger beer, ginger ale or cider. in the past it was traditionally more European but has been picking up much more steam here in the states. It is a refreshing drink as the label says, not one that will replace my regular favorites as beer goes but I certainly

Yes, I believe this is the first five I have every given out. This beer is a cloudy yellow with a slight lemon aroma. I am not a big fruit beer fan but this one is awesome. The lemon flavor is clean and not in your face. I loved the wheat flavor and will buy more of this; I will have to find it first.

Nick D– 4.5

This is a no frills fruit brew. The natural lemon flavor is the star of the show but the flavor is perfectly balanced. Lemon and lime flavored beers are extremely popular at the moment and most have no personality but this beer elbows in to make room for itself. It has a distinct tangy note that is unique and bold.

Random Beer Facts! • It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the “honey month”, or what we know today as the “honeymoon”. • According to a diary entry from a passenger on the Mayflower, the pilgrims made their landing at Plymouth Rock, rather than continue to their destination in Virginia, due to lack of beer. • Before thermometers were invented, brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the mix to find the right temperature for adding yeast. Too cold, and the yeast wouldn’t grow. Too hot, and the yeast would die. This thumb in the beer is where “rule of thumb” comes from. Compiled from www.beerfestboots.com

REVIEWS Sept. 14th

Finding Nemo 3D

Walt Disney Pictures

Sept. 7th

Little Nemo is captured from the ocean and dumped far, far away from his ocean home into a fish tank at a dentist’s office. His father, a timid clownfish, treads across dangerous waters to try and save his son. It’s a monumental and comedic journey with an unlikely hero. He meets new friends and confronts dangerous enemies in an effort to find, rescue and bring Nemo home. It’s the perfect time to revisit the classic adventure tale. This is our first chance to see Pixar’s new Toy Story short, called “Partysaurus Rex,” that will play before Finding Nemo. It features the voices of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould and Willem Dafoe. Directed by: Andrew Stanton & Lee Unkrich.

CBS FIlms

The Words “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” The famous quote by T.S. Elliot or Pablo Picasso (no one really knows for sure who said it, possibly both...) applies in this movie but at what cost. Struggling writer Rory Janson (Bradley Cooper, The Hangover) finally achieves literary success after publishing the next great American novel. The catch is- he didn’t write it. Now as the past is revealed and haunting him he must pay the price for stealing another man’s work. It’s a story within a story (and maybe within another story.) Starring Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Zoë Saldana. Directed by newcomers Brian Klugman & Lee Sternthal.

Sept. 28th

Hotel Transylvania Sony Pictures

Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania…unless you’re human. Dracula has his own lavish “five-stake” resort and he’s having a party. It’s his daughters 118th birthday. The world’s most famous monsters-Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves and more-are all invited. No humans are allowed. When an ordinary guy crashes the party and falls for Dracula’s daughter it’s a monster of a problem for Drac and friends. It features the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, David Spade, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Cee-lo Green and Molly Shannon. It is directed by Gennedy Tartakovsky. —Jae Mills

The Lorax Universal

Kneedsville is a town that may be familiar to anyone with eyes. Everything is for sale and much of it is fake, the air, trees, bushes, etc. O’Hare is the man behind it all, opting to build a new factory for bottled air with full knowledge that the existence of said factory will pollute their natural air and create a viscous cycle. The film has a good message for children but can be hard to get into as an adult. There just isn’t enough cross humor to keep anyone over the age of 15 involved. —Timothy Crowley

The Dictator Paramount

Sacha Baron Cohen is true to form in his newest film that holds no comedic punches in its satire of ruthless foreign dictators, racial profiling and even American democracy itself. His usual shock tactics are present but more controlled and clever than in his previous film Bruno. There are many cameos in the film which up the laughter and entertainment value as well. The film is also packed with big names in the contemporary comedy scene. It is safe to say this is Cohen’s best film since Borat, it is thought out, relevant and gratuitously silly.

4:44 Last Day on Earth IFC

There is a hole in the Ozone layer, Al Gore was right and all life on Earth will end around 4:44. We are voyeurs to the small intricate life of a couple tucked away inside their apartment. The film is sad, very sad, but remarkably beautiful for all the torment you feel for the characters. A painter and her boyfriend, an actor, deal with each other and the prospect of impending doom in very different ways. I truly felt much of the world around them was ignored; deliberately no doubt, due to finance constraints and for ‘art.’ Regardless, I felt it was a very weak link in the chain and somewhat broke the fantasy for me. There are extremely potent, emotional scenes that could not exist in any other plight, and those feelings were felt.

Bernie

Millennium Entertainment Bernie is a quirky tale of an ultrapatient funeral director played by Jack Black, who is pushed to his limit. This movie is filmed with an interchanging testimonial format that brings fresh humor and a true sense of reality to the story. Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine’s acting is on point, as well as Black’s. The viewer finds themselves conflicted as to whether Bernie is a sociopath or morally justified. This concept draws the viewer deep into the story. On top of it all, getting to hear Jack Black sing gospel and spiritual tunes is hilarious and surprisingly quaint at the same time. —Nick Durcholz Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2012

Book Reviews By Danial Smith, Ann-Marie Myers, & Nick Durcholz

The Legacy by Jennifer Bogacki

THE ONE: The Life and Music of James Brown by RJ Smith

Mr. Please Please Please, Mr. Dynamite, Soul Brother Number One and The Godfather of Soul. RJ Smith’s The One: The Life and Music of James Brown details the many ups and downs of James Brown’s storied life, from his trouble childhood in South Carolina, where he was raised in his aunt’s brothel, to his time traveling the segregated chitlin’ circuit. Brown’s rise to stardom came with his breakout album Live at the Apollo, an album that was recorded and released against the wishes of his record label and management. The One shows Brown to be a hugely influential musician and performer, one of the driving forces behind the creation and popularity of funk music, as well as being the most sampled artist in hip-hop genre. The One combined news interviews and research to create the first major biography of the Hardest Working Man in Show Business.

The Night Circus

by Erin Morgenstern Morgenstern has written an enchanting book focused on a years-long contest between two magicians who work in different capacities for a mysterious circus in the late-Victorian era. The plot is loosely told, with less time spent on explaining what is happening and why, and more spent on detailed imagery and atmosphere. The two magicians, who are actually the pawns of older, more powerful rivals, are the main characters but a lot of time is spent exploring the world through other eyes. This book may not appeal to everyone due to some interesting narrative choices. For example, it is told in the present tense with multiple narratives, including “You” as a character roaming through the circus, and jumping back and forth in time. However, if you are a reader who enjoys a quirky story, then The Night Circus is well worth reading.

—Ann-Marie Myers

The Legacy is the first novel under the belt of local author, student, business woman and mother of five, Jennifer Bogacki. Bogacki’s rookie effort did not go off without an error but it did have its fair share of hits as well. In short, The Legacy is part murder mystery and part thriller spiced up with moderate erotica. Bogacki does a great job of building tension for the reader to keep them engaged. In fact, the strongest part of the book was its chronological sense and its almost constant action. Also, I really enjoyed the originality of the killer’s ritual. Bogacki was creative in this area and it really tied the reader to the antagonist. On the down side, some of the main characters were flat and uninteresting. I yearned for more descriptive language concerning environments, characters and experiences. The novel suffers from cliché and is too similar to the popular Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay. These problems aside, I felt the biggest issue was that the climax was too predictable and not nearly as dramatic as it could have been. It left me with ravenous thirst for more descriptors. I know this seems a bit caustic but I give great respect to the author for her ability to write a decent novel while living such a busy life. Keep working at it Jennifer!

Evansville Museum Contemporaries:

Brew Ha Ha 2012

T

his year’s 15th annual Brew Ha Ha will take place on September 29th. The beer tasting festival will continue to be hosted by The Evansville Museum Contemporaries, and will be held at the Evansville Museum on Riverside Drive. The evening’s festivities will run from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. The beer tasting gathering will focus on regional microbreweries including Evansville’s own Turoni’s Main Street Brewery with old favorites and more obscure hoppy, malty creations. Additionally, participants will be able to try out specialty, homemade, craft and imported beers. This event is essential to any tri-state beer enthusiast because it is one of the only events throughout the year that doesn’t focus on wine and liquor as well; this event is all about the brews. An assortment of snack foods will also be available that compliment the beer tasting experience. Continuing the entertainment from last year’s Brew Ha Ha will be the band Heypenny, who are set to perform the second half of the evening. Heypenny is an eclectic, upbeat indie band boasting an 80’s dance-pop style based out of Nashville. Admission for this year’s event is open to those 21 and over and a valid ID is required to gain entrance. The event is open to all age-appropriate members of the public and does not require an exclusive museum membership. Tickets for Evansville Museum Contemporaries members will run at $20 and all other attendants can purchase advanced tickets for $25. Prices at the door will be $30. To ensure the safety of event-goers, Brew Ha Ha will be offering free cab rides upon leaving the event. The Evansville Museum Contemporaries is a prevalent cultural support organization within Vanderburgh County. The group regularly holds small and large-scale events that promote awareness of the Museum, while also becoming more involved in cultural experiences with the community. —Jacqueline Greenberg For more information, visit www.emuseum.org/contemporaries.

Jerzey Street Band

Baroness

This band of Brits commands a sound that is as American as a double cheese burger. Their exposure to old school American rock and roll is evident but they make it their own. The Jerzey Street Band formed in 2006 and is comprised of seven members. Straight out the gate David Wrobel’s voice is off to me, it doesn’t seem to fit the mood of the music and it sounds too similar to artists like John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen. Wrobel’s voice does exude quite a bit of soul though, which is his redeeming quality. Their instrumentation is nothing extraordinary but the opening track “Pale Blue River” is a solid, driving, rockin’ and bluesin’ bash. They have the swingin’ and swayin’ part down pretty well too on “Reason to Speak” with a harmonica perfectly piercing the layer of funk. The third track “Mersey Angel” is a smooth ballad boasting unique songwriting that flips from campy to poignant and then back again.

Leave it to the state of Georgia to produce epic rock/metal band with a whole lotta soul. The southern gents of Baroness are not new in the land of music and their experience shows. The band has toured relentlessly and has released seven albums including one EP. If these albums past are as epic as this new double album then Baroness has too long waited for national recognition. These guys have earned it. It is such a rare thing these days to hear a metal/rock band that is multi-faceted. That incorporates different styles, instrumentation and rhythm into their music. Baroness can be brutal as a bleeding bull one minutes and then graceful as a tropical songbird’s mating ritual the next. The guitars are sweeping, epic and melodic. The drums are thunderous, precise and subtle. Contradictory yes, but this band pulls it off. Yellow & Green is an audio odyssey. It has head-thrashing climaxes like “Take my Bones Away” and sublime instrumentals like “Stretchmarker” to cool the blood. Then there are the wild cards like “Eula,” a haunting, bassladen ballad and “Psalm Alive,” an airy, funky shuffle of a song. Ladies and gentleman, Baroness has officially arrived.

Sonny & The Sunsets Longtime Companion Polyvinyl Records

This is the second time down the trail for Sonny Smith and the Sunsets. From playing Jimmy Yancey covers when he was 18 in small mountain bars to the release of his third album, Sonny has

had quite a musical trek. Before Sonny joined the cattle drive with the Sunsets he released two albums of his own This is My Story, This is My Song and Sordid Tales of Love & Woe, Sweet Lorraine. This newest effort really showcases his storytelling and lyrical abilities. Smith and the band’s sound exudes Golden Age country music. It has the slow gait of a cowboy walking into a 19th century western saloon looking for a shot of whiskey to wet his whistle after an all day drive. Their sound is light, even when the lyrics are morose. They command an old tymey, cookie-cutter style but they seem to keep each song fresh. “Pretend you Love Me” is a campfire song with walking bass line, accented by a mellow slide guitar and some woodwinds. Also, check out “Rhinestone Sunset” and “My Mind Messed Up.” —Franklin Rogers

Stagnant Pools Temporary Room Polyvinyl Records

Young Hoosier brothers Bryan and Doug Enas made their rounds of the Bloomington music scene. They hopped from band to band until in 2009 decided to form a band together. That band is Stagnant Pools. Bryan is on vocals and lead guitar while Doug bangs on those drums. This album is the Enas brother’s freshman effort and with a full 12 songs it is quite impressive for a couple kids who can barely buy a beer and who haven’t even toured outside of the state of Indiana. The brother’s style is not the easiest to access. It is a mechanized, droning brand of alternative with some aggressive guitar runs thrown in now and then. Bryan voice is reminiscent of Thom Yorke but unlike Radiohead the brothers Enas have no quite grasped the concept of the rising action. There is little to no excitement in this album. It sounds decent but it struggles to catch your ear. The listener just lists off into a sea of gray fuzz. Stagnant Pools has potential but for now, they are…well, quite stagnant. Check out “Consistency,” “Frozen” and “Maze of Graves.” —Orvis Macauley

The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band Between the Ditches Sideonedummy Records

This is a group of two burly Brown County boys and a busty Brown County girl. Their look is somewhere in between 19th century logger and 1950’s street brawler. Fortunately, this intrigue is more than skin deep. The band is comprised of Reverend J. Peyton, his wife Breezy and his distant cousin Aaron ‘Cuz’ Persinger. This group’s sound is a murky mixture of chug-a-lug Johnny Cash rhythm and slick slide guitar with an Appalachian soul. The lyrics are unrefined but they are good humored. If this album doesn’t get you moving in one way or another you might want to check you pulse. “Devils Look Like Angels” is a chugging choo-choo of funk accented with a simple, weaving guitar riff. “Something for Nothing” has a fierce bluesy vibe with numerous ups and downs. “Shut the Screen” is a knock-down, drag-out bluegrass number perfect for highlighting the frustrations of a long, hot summer. Jump on Reverend Peyton’s bandwagon for an audio blast! —Nick Durcholz

Can

The Lost Tapes Spoon Records and Mute

Can, the eternallyrenowned experimental titans behind the revolutionary avante-garde releases of the 60’s and 70s, have treated us contemporaries with a boxed set of previously unreleased material. At just over three hours, the set is writhing with the free-flowing improvisation and krautrock jazz that has dug them into a dimension of their own for decades. Not for the passive listener, the compilation throws us into Can at their most organic state, crawling towards abandon until they are nearly out of sight.

Passion Pit Gossamer Columbia

Gossamer, electro-pop group Passion Pit’s sophomore album, scrapes together tracks of shrilled, translucent listening, falling together in the lineage of blaring, unintelligible “mall” music. Their debut album’s sincere charm is drowned beneath a commercialized compilation laced with a proud distance that ultimately isolates and abandons the listener. Would-be emotional cataclysms appear formulaic under an over-produced piece attempting to do too much with far too little.

Ty Segall Band

Slaughterhouse In the Red Records

The soul of 1960’s anarchy is given an electrifying reprisal from the second album of Northern California, surfpunk/noise demon Ty Segall. The famed garage quartet dives into new waters that curl around destruction as though it were a warm blanket. Prepare to be enchanted, as relentless cries vibrate hip-to-hip with schizophrenic, psychedelic drags, topped with a hazy lo-fi aesthetic that could make your heart bleed. —Jacqueline Greenberg

Four Roses Bourbon Dist illery

I

f you’ve been on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and enjoyed it, may we show our own trail of Bourbon? This is a bottle we helped to select just for you. Yes, when I say you, as long as you’re legal drinking age and want to taste this bottle that truly means you!

To find this bottle of Kentucky Bourbon that you’ll never drink anywhere else in the world, you don’t have to even have to leave Evansville.

Four Roses Bourbon Distillery is one bourbon distillery that takes us on a trail of flavor like no other with 10 unique recipes that make up all their Bourbons. They are the only distillery that combines five proprietary yeast strains with two separate mashbills to produce 10 distinct and handcrafted Bourbon recipes, each with its own unique character, spiciness and rich fruity flavors. What does this mean for you the enthusiast in plain English? Consistency, depth of flavor and with varying ages the chance to occasionally sample something that will always be different. But it still maintains the mellow yet distinct flavor of Four Roses Bourbon. Part of the magic with a single barrel bourbon is even though two unique barrels have aged next to each other for X number of years in the same warehouse, there is a good chance they will taste different. Why? “If you could answer that, you’d be a billionaire,” says Dan Gardner of Four Roses Bourbon.

But really, why? If you need an answer, it’s partly the wood, the weather and the mystery of how it all works scientifically. On an August night a group of about 10 of us sit in the Biaggi’s Wine Room in Evansville with five different selections from five different barrels in front of us. We are accompanied by Frontier Liquors, local enthusiasts, friends and Four Roses Bourbon to taste them all and to the find the perfect selection to bottle several hundred bottles for the tri-state to enjoy. You can watch the process on a video on BourbonBlog. com. Or wait, after you watch the video, you can go buy a bottle at Frontier Liquors and own something that your friends from Kentucky to Michigan will never taste. It’s about eight years old and one of the finest limited edition bourbons you will ever discover. To keep the tasting notes simple, I’ll describe it as “mind-blowing.”

From the tasting we started with small samples of 5 Four Roses Bourbons at barrel strength (around 115 to 120 proof), and then we had a lovely dinner. Mental note: Start every dinner with barrel proof Kentucky Bourbon. —Tom Fischer

Visit www.FourRosesBourbon.com to learn more about each program, e-mail info@fourroses.us or call 502-839-3436.

Here’s a little more on one of the private barrel programs Four Roses offers: Four Roses Single Barrel Program Retailers including liquor stores, restaurants, resorts etc. can choose their own barrel of Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon. Master Distiller Jim Rutledge hand-selects several exceptional barrels of the Single Barrel OBSV recipe, each aged between seven and eight years. In this case in Evansville, we tasted to five of these barrels, and then selected the one that offered what we loved the best! The barrel will be bottled at 100 proof and marked with a special label signifying the retailer’s special selection.

VIDEO GAMES

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanical

Garden’s

Pony Express and Classic Ford Club Car Show

W

hen any form of media takes elements from others of its kind, it is essential that latter improve on those elements or at least stand out creatively from the former. United Front Games and Square Enix Studios seemed to have this concept close to mind when making the open world, action-adventure game Sleeping Dogs. This game takes elements from various games such as the Grand Theft Auto series, the new Batman series and the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Similarities from the Grand Theft Auto series are most apparent. In the body of under-cover cop Wei Chen, the player can steal cars, enjoy ‘massages,’ assault random people on the street and ultimately orchestrate total and complete bedlam that makes the French Revolution look like an after-hours bar fight. The game’s melee system shares dynamics with the new Batman games in that it allows the player to string together kicks, punches, disarms and blocks without skipping a beat. To do so requires lightning-fast thumb dexterity but when you piece together the right button series the result is savagely sublime. In a particular fight with a few miscreants, I was backed into a small three sided corridor with a baddie. With the press of a combo, I directed

Wei Shen to run up the back wall, turn 180 degrees on a dime in mid-air, and deliver a precise sideways, front kick to the thug’s temple. The player can also directly utilize objects and structures from the environment in attacks. Despite the apparent similarities to other games, Sleeping Dogs offers the player a tumultuous, multi-faceted plot populated with unique missions for and against the law. The player’s skill system stands out from the others because of its complexity, which really boosts the game’s replay value. It also offers fluid, cinematic hand-to-hand combat. Some of the game’s noticeable flaws were stilted frame rates, slightly awkward environmental navigation and moderate graphics. All in all, you also have to consider the humorous Chinenglish (half-Chinese, half-English) curses, the campy energy drinks and a cock-fight or two and you end up with one thrilling game. —Mr. Farthington

The E.S.R.B. has rated the game ‘M’ for Mature due to Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Content, Strong Language and Use of Drugs. It is available for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
