LETTER FROM THE OFFICE
////
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Keep those comments, questions and photo orders coming in! We here at Go Team thrive on your support, and all the interaction we have with you – both at the numerous events we come to and online at GoTeamMagazine.com – shows us that demand for quality coverage of local youth athletics and competition is as high as ever. Thanks to all the coaches who have helped us out in providing greater depth to the coverage of each of the photo spreads as well. With your help, we’re better able to identify the young athletes in the photos you see in the magazine. It’s one thing to simply see a kid going up for a layup or blocking a goal on the soccer field; it’s quite another to know who that young person is and have some description of the action in the picture. It is with the help of our local coaches and other supporters that we’re able to do this. As always, we want to hear from parents, friends and teammates of young competitors who you think deserve a place as our athlete of the month. Every issue of this magazine has featured such an athlete and it’s through the nomination process online that we can select each month’s athlete. So if you know of someone who is unique, gifted, talented, or just plain cool, let us know. We want to hear from you! Dylan Gibbs, Managing Editor

AS COACH OF THE ENGLISH ACADEMIC TEAM AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, MR. RUSSELL doesn’t fit the usual mold of a coach for our coaches’ corner. But his students are competitors, and they work very hard at what they do. So we decided to go outside the lines this month and ask him more about what he does. GT: Tell about your background; when and where did you begin teaching? RR: I began teaching at Mater Dei here in Evansville in the 1986-1987 school year. I taught freshman mostly, Dylan Gibbs with one sophomore advanced composition thrown in Managing for flavor! At the end of my second year there, I was Editor approached by the department chair at Central High School, whose wife was department chair at Harrison High School where I completed my student teaching, about an opening at CHS. Mater Dei was kind enough to let me out of my contract and I moved to EVSC in the 1990-1991 school year. I have been teaching at CHS since that time—20 years.
team. Coaches demand respect and work ethic. I think the big misunderstanding from those outside the coaching world or just the world of high school is that people do not know that students are often involved in many cross-curricular activities. I have certainly had my share of football players who were great performers in the musicals. When it comes to competition – other than winning – how do you define success? We all know it feels great to WIN! Seriously, I believe that any team is successful if the participation of students leads to a feeling of accomplishment. Often when students would hit a sour note on stage or forget a line or two, they would beat themselves up over it later. I tried to explain to them that no one knew but them so why did it matter? They knew. It mattered to them. They wanted to be the very best they could be and I think that applies to sports as well.

Please describe your experience as a coach and mentor (with regard to both drama and the academic team). My experiences as a coach in the drama were pretty wild at first. 11-YEAR-OLD KALEB GARD IS QUIET IN CONVERSATION, but he’s focused like a lens when it comes to his studies in school and inside boxing’s squared circle. Always into individual sports – with some football on the side – other than golf, boxing has been young Kaleb’s sport of choice. When he isn’t studying to maintain his A-Honor Roll average, Gard spends six days a week training. And that training has paid off: Kaleb recently won his bout at the Indiana Junior Olympics in his age and weight class in April – and he’s not stopping there – Kaleb’s dream is to compete on the United States Olympic Team… and then turn pro. This issue’s Athlete of the Month may be a young man of few words, but the words he speaks resonate with the competitor in all of us.
SO YOU’RE AN “A” STUDENT; DO YOU LIKE SCHOOL? I’d say yes.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL? Math… or science.
DO YOU HAVE A LEASTFAVORITE? My least favorite would have to be English.
AND WHAT GRADE ARE YOU IN?
KG: About a year and four months.
Sixth grade.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START BOXING?
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR SCHOOL AND BOXING SO THAT YOU CAN DO WELL AT BOTH?
My dad (who was a boxer in the Marine Corps).
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU LEARNED WHEN YOU STARTED TRAINING? When I started, I learned the basic jab.
AND WHERE IS IT THAT YOU TRAIN? At Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Boxing Club.
HOW DOES YOUR LEVEL OF BOXING WORK? HOW MANY ROUNDS ARE THERE? There are three one-minute rounds.
Well, I don’t have after-school programs, so that gives me time to do my homework and get to the gym.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES OR HEROES?
I’d like to be like Floyd Mayweather because of his style. But then I also want to be like Mike Tyson, because he kept on knocking people out.
WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT BOXING? I’d say the workout.
WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT BEING SUCH A GOOD STUDENT? Trying to stay concentrated on my schoolwork and trying to keep concentrated on boxing at the same time.
IF YOU GET FRUSTRATED WITH SOMETHING, WHAT DO YOU DO TO OVERCOME IT?
[I] just try to work more… don’t get too mad about it, because you’re probably going to have to do the same thing again. If you keep on working, then eventually you’ll get better.

GT: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BOXING?
Core Value of the Month: PEACE PEACE: Proving you care more about each other than winning an argument. Peace is a value not just because it helps us feel better, but because it helps us function better. And like many other values, peace is contagious. Help your child understand: Peace begins with an inner choice. The first step toward living peaceably is deciding that other people are worth more to us than our own sometimes selfish desires, and that there are times when the value of agreement is sometimes greater than the satisfaction of defeating an opponent. Peace requires action. Choosing to pursue peace is of little value without actions that back up that choice. Such actions include talking, helping, sharing and working. Each day brings opportunities to show that our desire for peace is important to us. Peace sees ahead. The attitude that leads us to peace is one, which understands the future benefits of our current efforts. It is a delayed gratification process. An insight into a future payoff should be one of the forces pressing us on toward peace.

Being only an 8th grader, Katelyn had to take on the starting pitcher position for the Lady Colonels. She has done a great job. She had her first no-hitter a couple weeks ago and struck out 13 batters in a more recent game. She’s also carrying a .375 batting average. When she’s not pitching, she plays second base with a little time on shortstop and third base. [She’s] an all around great player. -- Lisa McMillan
Zack Faith – Age 12 Hockey
He is a great a great athlete on and off the ice. He shows great passion for the game as he does for everything else he does. He was the captain of his team. Zack shows great responsibility. He led his team to two championship games and they won them both. I know him personally and he as a great friend as well. This is why Zack Faith should be athlete of the month. -- Bryson Linenburg
