First things first, let' s address the elephant in the room: no, the Blue Angels will not be streaking across the sky at ShrinersFest, performing their head-scratching, death-defying aeronautical moves over the Ohio River.

adly, government bureaucracy has clipped the Angels’ wings. But organizers have been working overtime to ensure that no one leaves disappointed. According to Hadi Shriners Vice President, Dale Thomas, the grounding of the Blue Angels has had an unexpected positive effect. “There were so many air shows across the country that got cancelled due to them pulling out,” he explains. “As a result, a number of dynamite acts are now available to perform at other events. We have six confirmed right now and are working to add more. So, prepare to be wowed – especially by the debut of night-time air shows, including a breathtaking 25 aircraft fly-by on Thursday evening.” Of course, the air shows are just one part of the festival. Thomas promises that past favorites like the bierstube, go-kart racing, barbecue contests, bass tournament and kids day will all be back, complemented by exciting new additions. “Every year we look to reach a wider audience,” he says. “This year we’re introducing professional wrestling. We’re also opening up the pagoda on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – we call it the VIP area. For $50 you can come in where it’s air conditioned and enjoy food and beverages – even watch the air shows from there. Blues & Barbecue Festival For over two decades, Henderson' s W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival has provided the tri-state area with a consistently fantastic week of food and music that only gets better each year.

rowds continue to come in droves, packing Audubon Mill Park in anticipation of hearing some of America’s best bands – all for free. With the generous help of corporate and individual donors and the unwavering support of the community, the event has grown by leaps and bounds but still remains family-friendly. As Music Chairman Dorin Luck explains, this is no small feat. “It’s harder than it used to be to maintain a free festival – the cost of bands has gone up, production costs have gone up. But the philosophy of the Henderson Music Preservation Society and the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival is that we will never charge. The music is for anyone who wants to come out and enjoy it.” The opening Saturday of the festival promises to be both exhilarating and heart-wrenching. In addition to delicious barbecue and sets by the Jimtown Saints, Lamont Gillespie, David Dunavent and Michael Gough Band, the schedule includes a tribute to late Blues 4U guitarist Mike McKinney. His spirit will live on at the event that his band has played every single year since the festival’s inception. “Apart from being an incredible musician, Mike was a lot of fun, a truly nice guy and a dear friend of ours,” Luck says.

As the reputation of the festival has spread, Luck has found it easier to book high-proﬁle acts, including the likes of Joe Bonamassa and this year’s major score, Voice of the Wetlands AllStars. He describes the Louisiana super group as a “once in a lifetime thing – a really big deal.” Interestingly, Luck has scheduled the band to appear on Wednesday evening rather than the closing Saturday night spot. But there’s a method to his madness, “It’s rare for us to put a group of that caliber on stage so early in the week, but we’re doing it because we want everybody to come out that night and really get the festival going,” Luck explains. As per tradition, Thursday night is Zydeco night, featuring classic Cajun food and sets by Curley Taylor and Chubby Carrier. The Friday night line-up includes the Holmes Brothers and up-andcomers Royal Southern Brotherhood (with Gregg Allman’s son, Devon). By the time the closing Saturday arrives, the atmosphere should be at a fever pitch for headliner Bernard Allison. It’s no coincidence that the festival veteran got the call, “The last time Bernard played the festival, he proclaimed from the stage ‘I love Henderson – this is my home!’” Luck explains. ”You want to put a friend up there who you know can bring the house down.” In all, over 20 premier acts will take the W.C. Handy stage throughout the week. Not surprisingly, to organize all the chaos requires a Herculean eﬀort and the forgoing of sleep on the part of all the volunteers. Luck is immensely proud of how the event has evolved and looks forward to an even brighter future, “I hope this festival goes on forever – or at least long after I’m gone.” —Thomas Ellis

Last year 's inaugural United Leasing Championship (ULC) at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh received rave reviews from both players and fans.

s the first official tournament of the newly-christened Web.com Tour (previously the Nationwide Tour), it went off without a hitch – with one glaring exception: it was oppressively…diabolically…HOT. And yet, all the hard work and planning by the tournament organizers more than made up for the difficult conditions. Hudson Swafford, a rising star on the Web.com tour, spoke with News4U about the ULC and the depth of talent in golf. News4U (N4U): Victoria National is considered one of the 35 best courses in America. What makes it so special? Hudson Swafford (HS): It’s a very challenging course - you really have to hit the ball well there, but it’s not a bomber’s paradise. The greens are big and undulating, but if you put yourself in the right areas, you can make some birdies. I’m really looking forward to getting back.

N4U: More and more golfers from the Web.com tour are graduating to the PGA tour and winning. HS: I think Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have inspired so many kids to get out and play. Players are developing earlier and earlier. Most anybody on the Web.com tour has the ability to get hot for a week and beat the best in the game. N4U: Speaking of getting hot…apart from the heat last year, did you feel that the ULC ﬁt in well with the rest of the tour schedule? HS: Absolutely. In fact, it stood out as a particularly well-run tournament. We all loved playing the event. You couldn’t ask for much more. —Thomas Ellis

Evansville Style at the Centre The St. Vincent Center for Children and Families will hold it's fifth annual Dancing With Our Stars, Evansville Style Saturday, June 8 at the Centre in Downtown Evansville.

ocal celebrities will participate in the event that will benefit St. Vincent’s programs such as childcare for people in the Evansville area. Modeled after the popular television show, Dancing with the Stars, the main event will showcase a dance competition. Dancers with be judged on their fundraising skills as well. After the competition, there will be open-dancing for everyone in attendance. The goal of the event is to raise $100,000 for St. Vincent. For Mark Miller, who has been taking ballroom dance classes with his wife for years, preparation for the event is more fun than work. “It’s not work or something like that where you have to train. It’s something enjoyable that you practice to get better at,” he said. Dave Wedding feels a little differently about dancing. “To be truthful, I dance like a two-by-four; I don’t have moves! I’ve been a roller coaster of emotions about it,” he said. Bluegrass Roots Branches Festival:

Dom Flemons of the Carolina Chocolate Drops

OMP is a music festival that brings together traditional styles of bluegrass and more contemporary variations of the genre to one place for folks of all ages to enjoy. It is a full-on music festival experience in our own backyard! This year’s lineup includes Merle Haggard, Del McCoury Band, Punch Brothers, Leftover Salmon, King’s Highway and many more. Also performing at this year’s festival, returning to the stage with joyous, tight rhythms and rich voices straight from the pages of American history are the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Their most recent release Leaving Eden is a critically-acclaimed, emotionally-charged, musical time-machine with a creative twist. Multi-instrumentalist and co-founding member of the band, Dom Flemons took time from the road to palaver with News4U. News4U (N4U): Describe your experience at ROMP in 2011. Dom Flemons (DF): It was one of the first festival experiences with the newer line-up, the group has been together since 2005 but when we did ROMP that was one of the first festivals we did with what was then our new line-up. ROMP has been a beautiful, beautiful place to work with. And, everybody will dance to the music with the old-time ‘flat-footing,’ which is something you just don’t get everywhere. N4U: Can you describe how it feels when you guys are all up there playing live and the beat is perfectly blended, everyone is working off each other and it is just moving as smoothly as possible? DF: Oh, it’s a beautiful feeling. It’s like riding a tidal wave, like surfing, like when you are able to catch the surf all the way back to the beach. N4U: What do you think your personality is within the band? DF: I’m a hype-man. You think of Public Enemy, you’ve got Chuck D here who’s telling you the message, but you have like Flava Flav who’s creating excitement and energy so that the message can be heard.

N4U: With all of the unique instruments that you guys use, I’ve got to ask you which one has a sound that speaks to you the most? DF: Well, all of them have their own little niche that speaks to a part of me but I like the quills. The quills are an instrument that is so loud and piercing in their sound but it doesn’t hurt your ears. They are pretty much like-they’re like a pan-pipe-so, it’s like blowing over the top of a bottle and making that sound with smaller holes and there are nine of them across. N4U: I’m curious as to why the music of the Piedmont region in the Carolina’s is so important to the band? DF: Piedmont music, it just has a slightly different beat to it and that is something that is unique even in the old-time field. It’s just getting that music that isn’t as well-known out there. Also, Rhiannon is from Greensboro which is about 2025 miles away from the region and our original fiddler Justin, who’s from Gastonia which is another Piedmont-area of North Carolina. —Nick Durcholz

Heidi Garza Dance Studio ‘W

ell,’ you might say, ‘that is just because she is active for a living.’ But you would only be examining a small sliver of who Garza is and how her life and business have progressed. Garza gets to do something that a majority of people don’t get to do in their lives. She gets to simultaneously make money and enjoy herself while doing it. Dance is both a life passion for her (she started at age 5) and an apparent key to the success of her business. She not only provides regular Zumba (a Columbian dance/fitness routine) classes but she also offers private lessons for couples and singles. And workshops for the public to learn the steps to the dances that Garza teaches in her class. And that is not all; she is an experienced choreographer offering her skills to various individuals and groups in the community in competition and in kindness, not to mention all of the fitnessbased events she brings her infectious and fun workout to. So, it is no far cry to say Heidi Garza and her Dance Studio exist as a pillar of fitness and activity in the area directly benefitting the health of our community. She even has her own trademarked clothing line SWEAT-XY or “Sweat is sexy” which she plans on making into a class with the same title. Heidi took a moment out of her busy class schedule to sit down and chat with News4U.

News4U (N4U): What do you do yourself besides dancing to stay ﬁt and what do you do as far as your diet goes to do the same? Heidi Garza Heidi Garza (HG): You have to keep a balanced diet for sure, but you can’t tell the people that they should do exactly what you do because everyone is diﬀerent. My workout is more extensive because I teach 11-12 classes a week. I don’t do any other workouts, I’m just doing dance for now. Dance is my lifestyle. It is one of the best cardio,

toning – because you are using your core – workouts because you use everything. I’m no expert about diet but I just say eat healthy; everything green but you have to balance, protein and carbs, balance. I always say one ‘free day,’ do it because you don’t want to be boring with what you eat. Your body deserves that once a week. I don’t drink soda though, I’ve been ‘soda free’ for seven years and I’m so happy-happy. (Laughs) N4U: Who or what got you into Zumba? HG: I was a member of one local gym and six years ago when I came here, I didn’t speak English, nothing, zero…Just some colors, numbers, that’s it. I was in the gym working out and saw a flyer and it said, ‘Zumba Coming Soon!’ and I had heard about Zumba before because I was involved in dance. The Group Exercise Manager, Tamara, came in and she asked if I knew about Zumba and I answered her in Spanish. She then started talking to my daughter who asked me for her if I knew about Zumba and I said ‘Yes! Yes! I like dance!’ So, Tamara told my daughter to tell me to come to the class, but then she also asked my daughter if I knew Latin rhythms like Meringue and Salsa and I told her to say yes. She then asked me to teach her some of those rhythms to be ready for the class, and I said yes. So, I started to teach her one session, and in that moment after the session, Tamara asked me to teach the class. I was supporting her in her class and then one day she came in and said ‘You know what? It’s your class.’ And she gave me another, and then another and I finished with six classes at the gym. So, it is because of Tamara, she changed my life and I am very thankful. It gave me the opportunity to offer and spread the love of dance to more people. —Nick Durcholz

You can navigate the perfectly paved roads of suburbia at a gentle pace, tear through rugged outdoor trails with severe inclines, the trees zipping by you in brown and green blurs or even power up and race down major thoroughfares the wind whipping at your hair. All of this is and more is possible with the right bicycle, location and a few accessories. The folks at Dan’s Competition are bound and determined to spread the good word of cycling in all of its forms. So much so, that their Retail Manager, John Wilson sat down with News4U to give us all the makings of a safe and enjoyable cycling experience.

News4U (N4U): What are some ideal models for someone who

wants to ride casually and comfortably on road?

John Wilson (JW): For the casual rider, we have comfort bike

models like the Schwinn Voyageur and Schwinn Sierra.

N4U: What models would you recommend for someone who wants to get very serious and competitive with cycling? JW: For the more serious rider, we have complete lines of mountain and road bikes from Cannondale, GT, Scott, Specialized, Schwinn and Yeti. N4U: What are some good options for kids? JW: We have several diﬀerent kids’ models to choose from.

We also have BMX bikes from all the popular brands.

N4U: What are the health beneﬁts of cycling? JW: Cycling is a low-impact form of exercise. So, it can give you

the same beneﬁts as running with less impact on your joints and back.

N4U: Besides physical activity, what are some other beneﬁts

of cycling? JW: With all of the organized weekly group rides, cycling can be a very social activity. It is a great way to meet new friends or hang out with current friends.

N4U: What safety tips would you give to a new cyclist? JW: The two most important safety tips when

cycling would be to always wear a helmet and obey all traﬃc laws.

N4U: Can you name some ideal places in the tri-state to

at the Ford At an age when most musicians are content to go quietly in the night, Barry Manilow is as passionate as ever about performing. His recent sold-out Manilow on Broadway shows dazzled fans both young and old.

News4U (N4U): You recently achieved your 50th top 40 hit

on the adult contemporary charts. Are you aware that you broke the record you held together with Johnny Mathis? Barry Manilow (BM): Wow! I didn’t know that! I was a big fan of his when I was growing up. He’s still great and still got that “Johnny Mathis sound” – a gorgeous tenor voice.

N4U: You seem to be constantly performing, always moving from one project to the next.

BM: I wish I had other passions, but my one and only passion

is music. All I do is come up with some cockamamie idea whether it’s an album or a tour or TV show. I’m just always working. I’m as boring as you can imagine, but I love it (laughs).

N4U: Speaking of projects, you released a concept album called 15 Minutes in 2011. Was it daunting to record new material that strayed from the style that has made you famous? BM: It was the second biggest challenge of my album-making career, because I actually tackled the world of rock and roll. Trying to write an album that was authentically guitar-driven was the ﬁrst of many problems, because I don’t play guitar. It was thrilling and daunting at the same time. When it was all done, I listened back to it and I didn’t cringe (laughs). So, I felt that it was a success. N4U: Are you comfortable with being known for more universal songs?

BM: I’ve tried being a little bit more artistic or atonal, but my

head just always goes to melody – catchy melodies that you can sing back after the ﬁrst time you hear them.

N4U: Will the show at the Ford Center include any of the

standards from the Great American Songbook that you love to sing or will it be primarily your own material? BM: You know, I’ve tried incorporating some of the standards that I’ve recorded into my live shows, and the audiences put up with me (laughs). But this time on the road, I’m doing all the hits that I have been lucky enough to have over the course of my career. I know what the people want, and I’m happy to give it to them. —Thomas Ellis

The days of crossing the bridge into to Henderson, Ky. just to save a couple bucks are long gone.

he small city has donned a much more appealing and unique garb, fashioned from a recent bloom of local businesses, a focus on culture and a variety events new and old. This move towards a more diverse and exciting Henderson includes food, art, music, bars, retail and more. But fret not, the city is keeping its bluegrass-banded soul intact, with events and businesses that are just plain, simple, fun and that embody down-home, country goodness. Henderson’s bar scene is particularly strengthened by two establishments, one on the strip and one downtown. On the strip is Double Duke’s Saloon, a very spacious bar boasting live music, a comedy night on Wednesdays, karaoke, beer pong and even Xbox 360 & Playstation 3 on their massive, state-ofthe-art entertainment system. For the most part, that definitely came through. I think pita and I think Gyro and I think I like them, so…I had one. I grabbed a chicken Caesar pita as well, cause I like them too! Why not a little hummus to start? The hummus was money! Chick peas perfectly blended with a good amount of cumin, lemon and just the right amount of garlic, served with toasted pita. Yum! The pitas are made for you café style, with your choice of white or wheat pita or turn it into a salad. Your protein hits the grill and now time for the veggies and sauces. I was impressed with how fresh the veggies looked and how many different sauces they had. It was frozen beef and pre-cooked chicken, I get it though, gotta be quick. So as I usually do, I went classic. Fresh tomato, cucumber, tatziki (cucumber, sour cream sauce), red onion and feta stuffed the Gyro. Crisp Romaine, Parmesan cheese and Caesar dressing makes the Chicken Caesar. I added some artichokes and avocado. Then add bacon, thank you! I was surprisingly pleased. The Pit is a great spot for those looking for a quick, health conscious meal with fresh ingredients!

The Smiling Moose is one of the newest additions to Evansville’s east side. This well maintained and spacious deli has a lot to offer. The menu is vast, ranging from breakfast, hot and cold sandwiches, soups, pasta entrees and over-sized salads. The enchilada soup sounded right that afternoon, so I gave it a shot. Full of diced chicken, red bell peppers, corn and black beans, this could have been lunch itself. The base was creamy and soft, with a sweet and smoky flavor. A slight heat balanced the dish off well. Next, I had the Parisian chicken sandwich on fresh sourdough (ya know, cause you can choose). Topped with melty Brie cheese, sauced with a basil pesto mayo and a few sundried tomatoes; the sandwich was much more than I could eat. I’m not sure if the chicken was pre-cooked, but it still had a nice herb and citrus flavor. For dessert I had the Ty Cobb salad. Too much food, but I’m a sucker for salad. The orange basil vinaigrette stole the show. All and all, this was a fun deli with something for everyone.

The timing couldn’t be better as so many people in the community seem to be taking the mayor’s “Energize Evansville” fitness campaign to heart. Naturally, there’s no point in exercising and sweating it out if you’re not going to eat healthy, too. The Farmers’ Market offers not only a wide variety of locally-grown fresh produce but also a nutritious breakfast and lunch at the food booths on site. With the sun out and a new spring in your step, it’s the perfect time to start eating right. The official Farmers’ Market season started May 17th and will carry on through September 27th. The concept is refreshingly simple: each Friday, local growers gather at Second Street in Downtown Evansville and set up tents across from the Old Post Office from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Their goods are on display, available to the public at a reasonable price - first come, first serve with no middle man or red tape. As crops are harvested throughout the season, the produce goes straight to the market – no detours for packaging or unnecessary handling. Other items for sale include fresh baked goods (for example, strawberry teacakes and sweet potato rolls), fresh flowers, handmade crafts, doggie treats, homemade soaps, herbs, plants and kettle korn. In addition to providing nutritional food, the Farmers’ Market links with local organizations that promote health and wellness. Deaconess Hospital will have a booth set up each Friday where you can receive a wealth of health information (wellness tips, screenings and health-related community partners will rotate on a weekly basis), including weekly nutritional recipes for in-season fruits and vegetables. And don’t forget to pick up your reusable Deaconess shopping bag for carrying your fresh purchases. The Famers’ Market also continues to strengthen its connection with the community’s creative side. The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will display and offer for sale the work of local artists (a different artist will be featured each Friday), including paintings, woodworking, ceramics and prints. If you are interested in joining the Arts Council, membership information

will be available, as well as upcoming arts events in the community. For the music lovers out there, a “Jammers” tent has been installed. Bring your instrument or instruments of choice and prepare to rock till you drop (at which point you may be advised to visit the Deaconess Booth, conveniently located nearby). And still, there’s more. On June 14th, The Duell’s Evansville Kia Mazda Volvo will host an auto show at the Farmers’ Market. Come out and see the latest models and engage in some car talk with the experts. So, as you can see, the Farmers’ Market is a multi-faceted operation that just keeps growing in size and scope. he culinary landscape of the tri-state is littered with pizza places both privately-owned and corporateowned. So for any new pizzeria, especially an independent one, it is tough to stand out in the crowd. Fortunately, Lucy Bella’s Pizzeria of Henderson is more than up for the challenge. With an owner who has 19 years of experience in the pizza business, Lucy Bella’s should be poised for long-lasting success. “The thing we have gotten back from customers is the fact that we are so friendly. We use fresh meats from the butcher shop and we try to get as many vegetables from the local farmers market when they’re open during the summer. We give good portions - you know, I think we put quite a bit of food on the pizza and we are reasonably priced, especially compared to some of the other independents around here. I think all of those in a combination really kinda bring everybody back,” said Russell Hibbs, Owner of Lucy Bellas. While the inside of the building is anything but spacious, it is very clean and simply furnished. Hibbs’ smiling face instantly makes you feel comfortable, even more so than the nofrills, small-town vibe that surrounds you. The first offering Hibbs brought to the table was their Buffalo Chicken Pizza. Visually it was beautiful with vibrant oranges, yellows and reds. The taste was even more striking. I noticed a slight earthy tone that supported the savory flavor of the thin-crust pie. Along the lines of texture, there was a subtle richness that I hadn’t ever experienced in a similar style pizza before. I was then informed that it was fresh bleu cheese crumbles from an Amish farm in the area placed underneath the mozzarella and cooked into the pizza. This unique touch, teamed up with tender, moist chicken, zesty and perfectly spicy Buffalo sauce and both a crispy and tender crust, made for one of the best Buffalo Chicken pizzas I have ever eaten.

Next up was the Lasagna and oh my, it was a hearty one. The serving size is more than gracious. It filled up an entire small, foil pie pan. This dish was a great example of straight-forward comfort food. Fresh ingredients and rich texture (but not too rich). Lastly, was the Chicago-Style Beef Sandwich. A creation of Hibbs’ wife April, it is easy to tell the effort she put into this sandwich. All of the ingredients are made from scratch, save for the bread. The thinly-sliced beef was smoky and ultimately tender, so much so that it exuded a light texture. Add the veggie mix (jalapeños, carrots, celery, cauliflower, pimentos and olives) to this sandwich for a spicy explosion and another facet of texture. Add peppercini juice for a sweet and slow, subtle spice. The near future of Lucy Bella’s Pizzeria holds the kick-off of the restaurant’s website and online ordering. Then delivery and then opening for day shift at least during the weekends. Further down the road could see a restaurant expansion with a new dining room and maybe even a new branch. oug Rennie of Just Rennie’s Catering and Just Rennie’s Cookie Company was originally from the Chicago area but grew up in Marion, IN. He is a 1986 Graduate of the prestigious New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, VT and he is also a Certified Executive Chef (CEC Honor). Rennie co-owns both Just Rennie’s businesses with his wife Marla, and he holds the title of Executive Chef. He earned his first Executive Chef position at the Ashley Grill, which was one of the finest restaurants in the Tri-State area. Prior to that, Rennie had been living in Houston, TX, and worked as the Banquet Chef for the Doubletree Hotel. Edwin Chou of the Ashley Grille, though, recruited him from Houston to be his Executive Chef for his upscale jazz restaurant. Rennie shares, “I have the passion to create fine dishes for my clients. f you are in the market to buy a home, there really is a need to get preapproved nowadays. Most realtors require a prequalification from buyers in order to start showing homes to you…To help your loan process go smoother and with less pitfalls, here are some items you need to gather before sitting down with me on an appointment. A common joke in my industry is that we may ask you for blood tests and possibly your first born child but that, I can assure you, is not the case! A list of actual items needed for your loan process is: • Your driver’s license and social security cards. If your license is expired or about to expire, make sure to go to the DMV and get it renewed. Also, if you have lost your social security card, you can request a new card thru the local Social Security office. • Copies of your last two years federal tax returns if you are self-employed or are 100% commission, or your last 2 years w-2’s if you are paid hourly or salary. • Your most recent 30 days paystubs. • 60 days of your most recent banking info - it’s a good idea to provide your last 2 months bank statements/401k or retirement statements. • If applicable to your situation, you should also have access to social security/disability awards letters, gift documentation, lease agreements if you own other property, full college transcripts if you graduated in the last 2 years, any applicable divorce decrees, and separation agreements/child support documentation. Having all that documentation when you first start looking to get preapproved for a mortgage loan may help facilitate a faster process for you. Also, here are some more tips to help avoid delays after your loan has been put in process: • Avoid any job changes that involve reduction of hours worked, quit your job, or change employers. • Open any new credit accounts (credit cards, auto loans, personal loans, same as cash purchase, etc.) • Agree to have your credit pulled by any other creditor. Just one of these changes can drastically affect your pre-approval, loan approval, and loan closing. Leslie Morgan of 1. ME, deﬁnitely! I’m either laughing hysterically, boo-hooing like a baby or guessing loudly (my husband says I can’t whisper) what is going to happen next. NOBODY wants to go to the movies with me. 2. Sandman! He is always looking for a way to end to the agony. I think he would even work one up, just to bring an end to the insanity we call meetings. 3. Rob! Rob is SO secure in his masculinity and unafraid to admit it, that I wouldn’t be surprised if he had the Biebs on his iPod, especially the current JB music.

1. Most likely Leslie. She is always on her cell phone, talking, texting or tweeting and I’m sure being in a theater wouldn’t halt any of that behavior. She also chews with her mouth open, so her consumption of popcorn and candy could wake the dead, let alone bother movie patrons. 2. Everyone will say me, and they are right. I eat a very healthy diet of non – processed food, and that includes lots of ﬁber. I am a “weapon of ass destruction,” y’might say. I Febreze my shorts at least three times a day. 3. I’d say The Rob. He’s on the Top 40 station where lil dope - smoking, monkey - abandoning Justin is a star. Despite my top notch rock cred though, I will admit to having purchased tickets for my daughter to see Justin in concert in Chicago several months ago. I would never listen to the Bieb, but apparently I’m all too willing to give him my hard earned money.

1. I think I would be most likely to get kicked out of a movie theater because if I can think of a line or an outcome funnier or better than the producers, I’m more than happy to yell it out in the theater. The theater operators tell me I’m “being a disturbance.” I consider it “helping.” 2. This one is simple. The most likely to pass gas in a meeting is quite easily Leslie. I say that because, in fact, she often does. She’ll usually make a big production out of it, sometimes putting one foot on a table, or bending over pretending to pick up an imaginary nickel. Not coincidentally, this is why I try to get the seat next to Leslie’s in meetings. 3. You may be surprised by this, but the most likely of us to have Justin Bieber songs on their iPod is actually the Sandman. He’ll tell you he’s getting ready to welcome his ﬁrst grandchild into the world and wants to be prepared for those long car rides with her… But that doesn’t explain the posters on his wall or the rumor that he’s designing his next tattoo to be a likeness of Bieber to go on his right leg, opposite the James Hetfield he has from Metallica. The only unlikely part of this would be Sandman actually owning an iPod. I doubt he knows what one is.

Prior to this year comedy had taken a long hiatus from the tri-state area but in the last year it has returned in the form of a dynamic duo.

he ﬁrst of this duo is a pure-bred. It is Evansville’s cozy comedy club the Joke Factory located downtown right on Main. It was created with comedy in mind. Its mission from the beginning has been to bring quality stand-up to Southern Indiana and it has delivered. The Joke Factory was birthed by Jay & Caroline Carter in July of 2012 and nurtured by comedian Artie Fletcher. The Factory holds comedy shows every Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. For a reasonable price the Joke Factory gives the tri-state access to comedians featured on the Bob & Tom Show, CMT, Comedy Central, HBO, Showtime, BET, John Boy & Billy Show and A&E Evening at the Improv. In June, comedian and one of the original Bob & Tom ‘Regulars’ Todd Yohn with be performing the 13th through the 15th. Don’t miss it! The second and much more diverse member of the duo is Henderson’s Double Dukes Saloon. Located right oﬀ the strip, this place has a bit of everything under its roof: dance club, bar, concert venue, gaming room and of course, comedy club. Every Wednesday Double Duke’s hosts regionally or nationally known comedians for as cheap as $5 for admission. But variety and frugality do not take away from the quality of fun that will be had at Double Duke’s LOL Comedy Nights. It is the perfect way to break-up the week with some laughs. In May, Double Duke’s played host to Dustin Diamond of Saved by the Bell fame and June has just as many laughs in store. esker Park Zoo is obviously a great place to take the kids for a day of fun, but once a year, it’s all about the adults. Zoo Brew is strictly for the 21 and over crowd – a grown-up evening of beer, wine, delicious food and entertainment with all the proceeds to beneﬁt the Evansville Zoological Society. Just like last year, tickets are going fast. General admission to the event includes a long list of perks: up to 25 beer, wine and beverage samples from over a dozen local restaurant sponsors, live bands throughout the night, a free souvenir sampling mug, a Zoo Brew sampling guide and much more. VIP tickets include all of the aforementioned perks as well as premium parking, access to the VIP courtyard, air-conditioned Discovery Center and other extras. The upkeep of Mesker Zoo requires major financial backing, but it’s worth every penny. Having a safe, educational place for kids in the community to enjoy beneﬁts all of us. So, come on out and spend an evening with people your own age while raising money for a great cause. Zoo Brew is presented by Toyota Indiana. The event is scheduled to run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 8th. Mesker Park Zoo is located at 1545 Mesker Park Drive in Evansville. Simplifying the equation of weight loss to restricting caloric intake and excess exercise sends your body into an extreme physical stress mode, causing your body to actually hold onto weight. What you eat is more important than how much. Workouts should be brief but challenging and with safe movements that fatigue all the major muscle groups, with increasing intensity. Tropicana Evansville Casino Aztar opened its doors in December of 1995 in Evansville and introduced casino-style gaming to the Hoosier state. Today, Casino Aztar has become one of Evansville’s largest employers with almost 950 team members and has established itself as a leading corporate citizen.

ver the past 18 years, Casino Aztar has invested over $212 million into the development of their Riverfront Park location with many milestone developments: Riverfront Pavilion in 1996, Casino Aztar Hotel in 1996, Aztar Executive Conference Center in 2004 and $40 million Entertainment District featuring the Le Merigot Hotel, Blush Ultralounge and restaurant venues in 2006. In 2010, Casino Aztar emerged from bankruptcy from former owner Columbia Sussex with a new company -- Tropicana Entertainment, Inc. At that time, the City of Evansville formed a new relationship with Tropicana Entertainment, Inc. and ushered in a new era of prosperity for Casino Aztar. Additional improvements of hundreds of new slot and gaming machines, a pedestrian bridge connecting the Le Merigot hotel directly with the gaming ﬂoor and pavilion amenities, and a recent renovation to the Casino Aztar Hotel worth over $6 million. These have been highlights of a capital investment plan over the last three years that has totaled over $19.3 million. Recently Tropicana Entertainment, Inc. announced that Casino Aztar will be rebranded as TROPICANA EVANSVILLE on June 11. General Manager, Ward Shaw commented that, “This exciting transition will better leverage the ‘Tropicana’ brand to attract new guests from outlying regions, as well as symbolize the continued guest improvements that we’ve made over the last several years for those customers that haven’t visited us in some time.” Guests can look for additional changes in the near future to launch the new brand this month, including a stronger sense of arrival to the downtown casino property that compliments the exceptional customer service and fun, gaming experience they have come to enjoy. Tropicana Entertainment Inc. is a publicly traded company that, through its subsidiaries, owns and operates eight casinos and resorts in Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey and Aruba. It is the patio of the Red Geranium Restaurant. Seemingly fashioned to blend into the surrounding flora and fauna, it is quite possibly one of the most comfortable and relaxing atmospheres with some of the most friendly and accommodating staff that the area has to offer. The pre-dusk sun fills the patio perfectly and the patrons sit, dine and drink with a beautiful fountain as a centerpiece. Not only do you have the full Red Geranium menu and the skill of the restaurant’s bartenders to pull from, but you also have the musical accompaniment of Warren “Rock-it Man” Batts. Batts shows passion for his tunes in a laid-back, playful but sincere manner. He takes you back in time with a delightful mix of Golden Age honkytonk country, slow rock and blues. Even if you aren’t a fan of the genres he employs, his music fits the space (patio or bar) just fine. If weather threatens, patio jams are moved indoors to the bar. But indoor or out, it is intimacy and comfort at its finest. layer. Coach. Manager. He’s done it all. He began playing volleyball more than 30 years ago and coaching it within the past decade. He’s earned a following that stretches across three states. Sonny Nguyen is the director of volleyball at Metro Sports Center off Virginia Street. His fourth year as director begins in July. Jeff Fossett, the general manager, approached Nguyen in 2009. The Elite Volleyball Academy had recently closed, and Fossett heard about Nguyen’s talent and his following. “He is the best at what he does,” Fossett said. “We had just recently renovated the facility to be able to have volleyball, and needed a volleyball guru. He is the direct reason why we have seen the growth that we have.” But Sonny Nguyen’s life doesn’t end and begin with volleyball, though he met his fiancée, Cheryl Boyd, through it. He was training her daughter, Kate, at Tri-State Athletic Club. Nguyen and Boyd would discuss Kate’s training, and they began to bond through their time spent together. Eventually, their friendship turned into a seven-year relationship with a wedding on the horizon. “It’s the best thing; she’s my best friend, my better half,” Nguyen says. “She keeps me grounded. She keeps me humble.” Nguyen has had to put down the volleyball more in the past year. From years of playing volleyball, basketball and tennis, he has earned bad ankles, wrists, shoulders, a bad elbow, rotator cuff and a bad back. Now he has taken up golf. Boyd doesn’t enjoy the sport and won’t play with him, so Nguyen plays with his friends.

“I’m not a pro by any means,” he says. “I do it for fun, because I just want to get out and hang out with friends, and I just go golf. It’s a good time for a bunch of friends to get together.” Stepping away from the court to spend more time with friends and family and to ease the wear and tear on his body, was all possible because of his hands-off approach to coaching the volleyball leagues at Metro Sports Center. Nguyen oversees 15 to 30 coaches at any one time, depending on the season. He manages the paperwork for the travel volleyball team. He takes care of scheduling practices, games, referees, front-counter workers and more. He also oversees the flag football league and parties at the center. “It’s like The Wizard of Oz,” Nguyen says. “I’m the guy that’s behind the screen pulling to make sure everything runs smoothly.” And while he’s managing, Nguyen’s staff takes care of the players. He attributes much of his success to his coaches. “I consider them the bread and butter of the place, because … [they] make this place run a lot smoother all around,” Nguyen says. He still coaches some league teams and helps with personal training, but now it’s his former players who are stepping up. “They trust me enough to come back and work for me,” he says. “I trust them enough to come work [for me], because they know how the system works. For them to come back and want to work means I have built a good bond with them.” Metro Sports Center’s summer league starts soon, and for Nguyen, that means more paperwork, more players, more bonding and more volleyball. —Katye Snyder

Rockin' River City Ride Battle of the Bands 2013 Winner

t’s rare in 2013 to come across a band that cites Electric Light Orchestra – in particular, former lead singer and producer, Jeff Lynne - as a major influence. So, you can imagine my surprise upon discovering that Likewise, winner of this year’s Rockin’ River City Ride Battle of the Bands, was just such an anomaly. Even more confounding, the two members have yet to graduate high school. How 17-year-old Ben Dahlquist and 18-year-old Matt Cassidy came under the musical spell of a 70’s British rock group with classical pretensions can be explained in four words: parents with good taste. What’s not surprising is the relatively short history of this young band. “We first got together several years ago and just started jamming,” Dahlquist says. “I think the Beatles’ ‘Day Tripper’ was the first song we learned.” While Cassidy studied the violin early in his childhood and became a bit of a jack-of-all-trades musician, Dahlquist only picked up the guitar four years ago. But just like their friendship, the musical spark between the two was immediate. To hear Cassidy and Dahlquist recount their often hilarious early attempts at live performance is like witnessing a classic comedy team. Descriptions of these initial shows are often punctuated with laughter and the phrase: “It was awful!” In short order, though, there was less awful-ness and more harmony as the duo developed a singing style reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel. “Most people just have back-up harmonies that compliment the lead singer,”

Cassidy explains. With us, it’s almost like one voice.” Armed with a new-found confidence, Likewise booked numerous shows at local cafes and restaurants, including a residency at Greek’s Pizzeria where they currently host open-mic night on Thursdays. Their sets contained a few originals but were mainly dominated by Beatles and classic rock covers. The inspiration for more creativity came with a permanent band name. “Matt thought up Likewise, because our family members were suggesting all kinds of terrible names,” says Dahlquist. “We started collaborating on new songs almost instantly.” Their sound, according to Cassidy, can be described as “pop alternative.” “Our stuff doesn’t necessarily sound like ELO or the Beatles, but we like to use similar chords and chord changes,” he explains. After playing well-received sets at Hacienda and other local restaurants late last year and into early 2013, Likewise fatefully entered the 2nd Annual Rockin’ River City Ride Battle of the Bands. The event was held April 20th at Casino Aztar. Despite competing against four very talented and experienced area groups, the duo was unfazed. “We weren’t nervous at all until the end when the votes were being counted,” Cassidy says. “We had no idea that we were going to win, but it was awesome.” The prize package included free studio time, and the boys are currently hard at work on a debut album entitled Neighbors which they expect to complete by the end of June. With graduation looming, the duo hopes to pursue music full-time – maybe even with the help of Jeff Lynne. “If we could get our CD in his hands that would be the highlight of highlights,” Cassidy says. In the meantime, the Battle of the Bands victory has opened the door to more local shows, including gigs at Deerhead Sidewalk Café and Lamasco Bar & Grill. But even if Likewise fails to hit it big, Cassidy and Dahlquist intend to rock on, regardless. “We would play restaurant gigs until the end of time if we could make a living at it.” —Thomas Ellis

Brewery For many people, beer is a treat after a hard day at work. For Jason Carson, the owner of Carson 's Brewery in Evansville, beer is work.

“S

everal years ago, I began looking at starting a rum and whiskey distillery. Our family has been in the chemical business for a few generations and I was looking for a new venture. As I began to do research, it became apparent that it was a lot harder to ﬁnd a distiller than it was to ﬁnd a brewer,” Carson said. “I ended up tracking down a high school friend (Nathaniel Cruse) who I knew has over 20 years of experience in commercial brewing. We discussed the transition for him to learn how to become a distiller and began researching how to distill spirits. After a few conferences and an on site training at Koval Distillery in Chicago, we decided that maybe starting with a brewery would be our best opportunity to get to a distillery.”

Carson’s Brewery currently produces six beers: Brown Cow Brown Ale, Eville Wheat, Harlot Honey Blonde, Pagan Pale Ale, Red Dawn Amber Wheat and RIPA Red India Pale Ale. Carson said the process for determining the six beers oﬀered came about through several factors. Carson received a lot of feedback and assistance from Cruse, Carson’s Brewery Brewmaster and John Mills, the brewery’s Head Brewer. The group concocted a number of test brews and conducted many private tastings and events. Through this trial and error process, the group came up with the current list of six beers oﬀered.

“We do plan to monitor how those brews are received and may replace the lowest seller with a new style. We have several that were really close to making it in,” Carson said. Carson mentioned future plans to brew a pumpkin ale this fall, the ﬁrst in a series of specialty beers. He also hopes to oﬀer some barrel-aged beers as well. Carson noted that recent tapping events at Knob Hill Tavern, KC’s Time Out Lounge, Roca Bar North, Bokeh Lounge and Gerst Haus helped to promote the beers and gain a following in the community.

While current space limitations limit the amount of beer the company brews, Carson’s looks to expand in the near future. “We are currently making four barrels a week in a lab next to the future brewery off Lynch Rd. Our new 20 barrel brewhouse will be able to make 40 barrels a week once we get up and running this summer with expansion possible up to 5,000 barrels yearly,” Carson commented. “We have additional land to expand on that will be for the brewery and/or a distillery,” he added. Carson said that once production moves into the brewery, they will offer all six beers on site at 2406 Lynch Road. He also mentioned that when the brewery opens, they will host special events and look to expand into more restaurants. On June 8, Carson’s Brewery will be on tap at Mesker Park Zoo’s annual Zoo Brew to benefit the Evansville Zoological Society. —Paul Bragin

This is a straw colored beer with a nice, white head. It did have some nice hops ﬂavor with some grapefruit characteristics. I could also taste the malts with a bitter ﬁnish. This beer had nothing that really stood out but was just a little above average.

The color of this brew is jewel-like amber. The first whiff is smooth but rife with hops. It doesn’t feel like someone punched you in the nose when you take hard, sharp smell of it. The first pull carried the strongest hops flavor but lingered only briefly on the palate. Unlike most pale ales the texture gets smoother as you get further into it. The flavor also becomes more subtle as you progress as well. In a can this is one of the only pale ales I’ve ever had that I would drink on a hot summer day and still be refreshed. It is another well balanced and refined entry from Two Brothers.

The motive of follow through to the taste is successful with a fruit infused sweet aroma with a hint of licorice, the flavor maintains a caramel malty sweetness with tones of toffee and spices. very drinkable. All I can say is Wow! America @#$% Ya! This delightfully sweet stout from right here in the home land is one of the best in its class. I may have had stouts that equal it, but I have never tasted any better. The nitro ads a interesting element if you do the recommended gravity pour, it has a rolling shimmer that creates a unique visual aesthetic.

This is a very dark beer with a nice, chocolate head. I enjoyed the milky creaminess I could taste. I also could taste the roasted malts, coﬀee and chocolate but none of those ﬂavors where too overbearing. It has a 6% ABV but you couldn’t tell it.

This beer is a brown with a tint of red in appearance. I could smell the Belgian yeast, caramel, toasted malts and earthy hops. I could taste some prunes and caramels and a mild bitterness from its hops. I really enjoy the Blonde Leﬀe that is out there and really enjoyed this darker version.

This beer sports a translucent deep brown color with a slight red tint. The aroma is a velvety cocoa with a slight nutty tone and the malt is nestled perfectly in the middle. There is even a subtle smoky scent. The ﬁrst couple pulls hit hard on the back of the palate, surprising from such a seemingly smooth beer. There is moderate sweetness present but it isn’t very indicative of caramel. The ﬂavor is warm and fairly complex but the strong bite of the texture brings it down.

Black as night sums up this nitrogen infused beer. The aroma is sultry with a bold coﬀee aroma jumping right out at you. There is a subtle cocoa scent that is more smoky than sweet as well. The taste and texture are as luxurious as the smell. The texture is so smooth the bite of alcohol is totally nonexistent. The ﬂavor is really light, maybe too much so, but it brings opulence with its subtle, smoky malt. Stouts are not for the summer but if nothing else, treat yourself to one of these in a nice cool air-conditioned room. It is an ultimate chill beer.

This beer pours a clear, pale yellow. The aroma has some light Citra hops. The ﬂavor is pretty light but rather refreshing, especially versus most Blond Ales. I enjoyed the light malt ﬂavor below that supports the hops, not overpowering. This is a light, summer beer to drink on a hot day.

Well here we are with the newest Widmer belly flop onto the hot pavement of summer. As I have come to expect from this brewer, their consistency seems to follow a trend of capturing the polar opposite of what I find appealing about a beer. It has a clear gold pour with thin bright white head. The nose is a citrusy lure than makes you consider maybe the Widmers are going to change my mind about the dishwater they bottle. But it has a very thin palate with a blandness that starts out ok but has no longevity to the flavor.

This one is a washed out amber hue. I hate to say it but this beer has one of the funkiest smelling beers I have ever witnessed. It has a pond water odor punctuated with mildew and a slight citrus aroma that is lost in the mix. The texture is nice and smooth but the ﬂavor is that of stale, ﬂat grain. The taste is largely unappealing and there is nothing interesting about it at all. It is like someone put Beer 30 in a bottle sweetened it and mixed it with pond water.

Cigar Review: Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto

his cigar is full of complex flavors. Right off the bat, there are flavors of dark espresso, sweet chocolate and a little caramel. There isn’t one that stands out from the other. It’s like the cigar is split in thirds as far as the flavors go. This is definitely a medium-full cigar that pours out smoke and holds ash like no other. Into the second third of it, the flavors stay pretty much the same, which to me is the only disappointing part of this great cigar. There is a pepper that came about on the palate, even though it was there through the nose in the first third. In the final third, the pepper on the tongue has backed off but that is the only change. The Liga Privada line of cigars is great. Yes they are a little pricey, but you will instantly know where your hard earned money went when you sit down with one of these bad boys. —Matt Latham

Book Review:

Music of the Belly Dancer by Brian Sweany

When I first started reading Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer, I thought to myself, The title has nothing to do with the book. I discovered that was not the case; it just took awhile to reveal itself.

he story follows Hank – as he likes to be called. His full name is Henry David Fitzpatrick after the famed writer Henry David Thoreau. Over the course of the novel, it discusses events from his late teenage years to early twenties. He follows the expected invincibility mindset of a teenager by experimenting way too much with drugs and alcohol. It is later revealed that he has his reasons for going a little overboard. From the very beginning, Hank has a sense of humor that is simply infectious. His parents decide they want to have another child – even though they are middle-aged and his dad has already had a vasectomy. Who knew there was a procedure to reverse a vasectomy? (Maybe people do know that, but I certainly did not.) Hank ﬁnds this idea utterly ridiculous since they already have two nearly full grown children.

Then there is the love triangle that kind of ends up being a love square along the way. Everything is full of excitement when you are young, stupid and in love. Hank should know this because he just cannot decide who he wants to be with more. He also tends to date women that his best friend, Hatch, has also dated. This novel is sort of like a highway. Some of the twists and turns are expected while others seem to come out of nowhere. It is full of teenage hormones, heartache and enduring friendship. It somehow manages to be emotionally raw and humorous all at once. What a combination. —Corienne Gulley

The 2013 River City Bicycle Classic – an INKY Cup Points Series Race - returns to Evansville bigger and better on June 8th. They eventually work their way up the misdemeanor ladder to full felonies at the homes of celebrities like Kirsten Dunst and Paris Hilton, whose home was robbed several times before she realized it and called police. Nicki (Emma Watson), Sam (Taissa Farmiga), Chloe (Claire Julien) and Marc (Israel Broussard) round out the remaining band of thieves. Sofia Coppola writes and directs. Not surprisingly, she chose Hollywood as the set location, and even filmed inside some of the homes where the real crimes took place. The real life ‘Bling Ring’ piled up approximately $3,000,000 worth of celebrity belongings, which is interesting considering the items were paid for with entertainment fan money in the first place. The movie’s budget was $8,000,000. I’ll estimate that this film will bring in approximately $50,000,000 across the globe, begging the question, couldn’t we have just bought these people some designer jeans and saved the rest for a story that matters? There is no doubt the film’s title symbolizes the futile cycle of materialism, and I hope it stops here. The only justice was that Emma Watson’s wallet was reported stolen during filming – no offense, Ms. Watson.

Jack Reacher Paramount

A man pulls into a parking garage, parks, drops a quarter in the meter, guns down five random people in broad daylight, then speeds off untouched. Detective Emerson (David Oyelowo) shows up at the scene, fingerprints the quarter and less than 16 hours later, an ex-military sniper with a deadly past, James Barr (Joseph Sikora, is arrested and given a confession to sign. Instead of signing the confession, he writes, “Get Jack Reacher.” Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is not so easily gotten. He is a highly skilled, ex-military homicide investigator who has dropped off the face of the Earth with an impeccable service record. Naturally, everyone is surprised when Reacher waltzes into the police station only a few hours after Barr’s arrest. In the meantime, Barr has been beaten into a coma by other prisoners during his trip to the county jail. Unable to question him, Reacher searches for answers as to why Barr would have asked for him by name. He reveals Barr’s deadly past to District Attorney Alex Rodin (Richard Jenkins) and Barr’s public defense attorney, Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), who happens to be the D.A.’s daughter. Upon learning that Barr has murdered in cold blood before, the case seems open and shut. That is until Rodin hires Reacher as her lead investigator to try and keep her client off of death row. He then starts to unravel why a person, sane or otherwise, would pay the parking meter before gunning down five innocent civilians. Think Bourne meets Dr. Harry, and reach for this one on the rental shelf. You won’t be disappointed, and that’s no stretch.

Safe Haven Relativity Media

After a violent encounter involving a bloody kitchen knife, Erin (Julianne Hough) escapes Boston as a murder suspect. Pursued by the relentless, alcoholic detective Tierney (David Lyons), she changes her name to Katie and starts a new life in picturesque Southport, North Carolina. She settles quickly enough, finding a job, purchasing a house and chatting with neighbor, Jo (Cobie Smulders), who mysteriously is never seen with other townspeople. And, she never comes up in any conversations with said townspeople. This wouldn’t sound off any alarms in say, New York, but this is Southport. It’s almost as if this Jo lady is a ghost or something…more on that later. Reluctant at first, Katie eventually falls for Alex (Josh Duhamel), who is a recent widower and father of two. Their newly discovered “safe haven” is endangered when Tierney sends an APB with a picture of Katie as a murder suspect. Alex, instead of doing the smart thing and protecting his children from a mysterious stranger, vows to protect Katie. As the explosive Southport Fourth of July party approaches, so does the belligerent Tierney, who we’ve since learned is actually Katie’s abusive husband. She was forced to stab him in order to protect herself on the night she left Boston. After wrestling together, Tierney’s gun discharges, killing him. When the dust settles, Katie learns that Jo was really Alex’s wife – yes, she’s been talking to the ghost of Jo, his deceased wife. The end. ABOUT THE BAND:

Members are Reid Chancellor on vocals and guitar, Logan Patberg on vocals and guitar, Chase Keller on bass and vocals and Dylan Woodall on drums and percussion. Myself (Ried Chancellor) and Dylan formed the band back in 2008. After having multiple friends play bass, we finally have found the line-up and that we wanted. We released our first record back in August of 2012, Child Songs and have just recently released our newest EP uglies. We have been playing with the same line-up for over a year now. WHAT THEY COVER/DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE:

We play all original music minus a cover or two here and there. I would describe our style as a melting pot of all of our favorite bands. Kind of like a SPAM version of music (but mainly ham). In the simplest form, I would call it indie pop/rock. THEIR INFLUENCES:

LOCAL JAM: Turkuaz @ Lamasco Bar & Grill

unday night at Lamasco is one of the richest musical treasures Evansville has to offer. It quickly turns any day of rest, into a day of boogie. It was the seventh of April, a warm, spring breeze and latewinter chill were at odds with one another and Brooklyn-based Turkuaz (ter-ku-wahs) took the stage. Described as “power funk,” this band of 10 showed that they could not only serve whole helpings of funk but they could also swing in bright, big-band bliss, frolic among a field of smooth, jazzy notes and spout soul-fire golden age blues style. The spry twentysomethings began by lying down and infinitely calm and swanky vibe. It lulled the ears for a bit, teasing them until the sound burst from the gate into the raucous energy of a Bourbon Street parade. Turkuaz is fluent in passion but they also possess the innocent eagerness of a grade-school crush. They fired salvos of varying rhythms each more intoxicating than the last. Add seamless segues and structured but loose instrumentation and you get an extremely danceable, but also complex band that is a blast to experience live.

Naked MVD Entertainment 4/5

You never know quite what to expect from a solo album. More than often than not, the songs sound unﬁnished, awaiting the input of the other band members. But this is clearly not the case with Naked. King’s X bassist/vocalist dUg Pinnick’s entirely autonomous new release sounds completely whole. Handling all instrumental duties, he is a one-man band – albeit, one that rocks like an angry David Bowie fronting a particularly aggressive Living Colour. Many of Pinnick’s songs tend to follow a similar pattern: slow, spacey, psychedelic verses that burst into impossibly heavy, funky choruses. “I’m Not Gonna Freak Out,” “Courage,” “The Point” and the epic “I Hope I Don’t Lose My Mind” all work this angle to near perfection. Yet, “Speeding Love,” “Take Me Away From You,” “That Great Big Thing” and “What You Gonna Do” put the pedal to the metal (forgive me) from beginning to end. The latter track is as heavy as it gets – both musically and lyrically. Pinnick pulls no punches: “Everybody thinks I got a whole lot of money because I play in a rock band/groove for the people/but I’m broke down – but I’ve spent my whole life doing what I wanna do.” He seems to be doing just ﬁne by himself.

Ed Roland & the Sweet Tea Project Devils ‘n’ Darlins Self-released 4/5

Collective Soul lead singer Ed Roland takes a break from the spotlight with the Sweet Tea Project (STP), a timely diversion from his rock star day job. A collective, so to speak, of musician friends hanging out and playing an array of (mostly) acoustic instruments, the STP is highly congruous with the current musical climate – in line with bands like Mumford & Sons and the Lumineers. Roland and company rip it up on the opening title track with a freight train rhythm and a nod to the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.” “Going to Birmingham” starts deceptively slow with some ukulele strumming before kicking in with a chorus that Freddy Mercury (R.I.P.) could have written. Here, the background vocals are pristinely layered – initially seeming in complete juxtaposition to the otherwise loose feel of the album. But when Roland’s friends join him on the beautiful, downbeat “When It Comes Down to Love,” the perfect harmonies really soar, adding emotional weight to the track. While Devils ‘n’ Darlins doesn’t come across as a wholly new musical adventure – songs like “Just As I Am” and the closing “Lennon’s Lullaby” would sit comfortably on a Collective Soul record – it still sounds fresh.

Pop Evil Onyx eOne Music 2/5

All the best metal riffs were used up years ago, so now it’s just a matter of trying to recycle them in an intelligent or unique way. By that measure, Onyx is the dumbest, most unoriginal album released so far in 2013. Each song sounds like it was patched together with bits of Shinedown, Saliva, Creed, 3 Doors Down and everyone’s favorite punching bag, Nickelback. All could be forgiven in the name of guilty pleasures if not for Leigh Kakaty – the single worst hard rock singer alive. Case in point: lead single “Trenches.” Just one of many cliché-ridden songs about overcoming the struggles of modern life, Kakaty inexplicably punctuates the end of nearly every line with a comical “yeowww!” He means to sound tough, I assume, but his yelps only distract. “Divide” actually starts with a pleasingly dark intro before devolving into another pseudo-metal rip-off. Kakaty tries to rap his way through the verses before delivering the philosophical chorus: “Sometimes in life we gotta fight/ looking for the truth in wrong and the black and white.” My eyes have been opened. Onyx might actually succeed as one of those fist-pumping albums that riles up crowds at a sporting event – where the sheer volume of the music overrides its blandness. That’s about it.

The Quick & Easy Boys Make It Easy In Music We Trust 4/5

The Quick & Easy Boys bring the funk – and the pop, the rock and the psychedelic – on their third full-length release. The band covers a lot of musical ground over the course of 10 songs, but the album flows effortlessly. As advertised, Make It Easy goes by fast. The Oregon powertrio has no patience for filler, so each song is concisely arranged and delivered with pop precision. “Hey Hey Hey” and “Let Me Get Down” are little funk masterpieces that would motivate even the most coordination-challenged individual to hit the dance floor. It’s as if the trio conjured Hendrix from the dead and plied him with (more) pills for maximum speed – and Prince just happened to walk in and shred the guitar solo. “Toothpaste” pulls in the opposite direction. The guitar picking is elegant and reminiscent of the Beatles’ classic “Blackbird.” The band’s apparent theme song, “Make It Easy” proves how deftly the trio can segue from one style to another – even during the same track. While the verses make for a sort of old school doo-wop, the almost imperceptible shift to a periodic minor key brings the track right back to present day alternative music. Make It Easy is 36 solid minutes of irresistible hooks and welcome mood swings.

Armed With Legs Self-Titled

This Seattle band is armed with smooth vocals, and songs layered with melodic guitar tones. It’s not overproduced, which is a nice change in this poppy-genre. A variety of sounds and instruments work hard to keep the monotony to a minimum, although several of the songs will give you déjà vu of the previous. The new album isn’t unique enough to be God’s gift to indie-pop, but it does hold promise. Look for the new “Armed With Legs” this June.

Hailing from North Carolina, ASG is breathing new life into the 1990’s alternative-metal scene. With hardcore and punk inﬂuence, the majority of the tracks on Blood Drive hit the ground running. Tracks like “Blues for Bama” and ”Earthwalk” surprise you with a more ambient sound, especially compared to harder tracks like “Castlestorm.” After more than a decade of shows, the band is seeing consistent success, including being featured on Volcom Entertainment and video game Skate 2, and touring with Motörhead. Fans of stoner metal and heavy rhythms will have a lot to enjoy in Blood Drive.

Anna Bergendahl Something To Believe In

Decca Records

Something to Believe In starts off on the right path for a folk rock album, with the bluesy, Fleetwood Mac-esque “I Don’t Know (Where I’m Going with This).” From there, the album goes flat. The music of 21-year old Bergendahl has a laid-back feel similar to that of Sara Bareilles and Norah Jones. The album has backing from well-know producer Larry Klein, who has produced for many greats including Joni Mitchell and Peter Gabriel. Despite that, the music just seems to blend in like a wallflower. One hopes to hear her vocal diversity embraced further as she releases more music.

Boasting the soul of a garage band and the charm and tales of southern Americana, Ed Roland & the Sweet Tea Project are deep into their maiden tour.

ore notably, Roland is the front man for the rock band Collective Soul, known for their hits “Shine,” “The World I Know,” “December” and more, the band will celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2014. His newest musical venture Ed Roland & the Sweet Tea Project will release their first album Devils ‘n Darlins later this year. While they will not be touring close to the tri-state, a road trip to North Carolina or Georgia to see them is highly advised. Roland took some time in between shows and bands to chat with News4U. News4U (N4U): What led you to collaborate with the guys in Sweet Tea? Ed Roland (ER): I have a studio at my house and I kinda reconnected with some guys I played in high school bands with or my early-20’s with and they were doing what I call the ‘coffee house circuit.’ So, after they would get done with their gigs, we’d suddenly seem to end up over at my house in the studio and we’d just jam and hang out. N4U: Can you put into words the musical or lyrical vision you have with Sweet Tea? ER: Well, with Sweet Tea we try to be a bit more story-telling, I will say that. And with that being said, it’s not like I don’t try that with Collective Soul but sometimes you can get away with a little more abstract lyrics with Collective Soul, with theirs (Sweet Tea’s), I really wanted to be straight-forward, straight-ahead and just focus on that. As far as the music side of it, you know, really focused on the harmonies. These guys sing amazing harmony. N4U: Can you take yourself back to when you heard “Shine” being played for the first time on a major radio station? How did you feel? ER: Oh yeah, we had just gotten signed to Atlantic, and my manager at the time said, “You can have the weekend because after that, you’re on the road forever.” So, I flew to Memphis to see Elvis’s Graceland and got off the plane, got in the car, turned the car on and there was “Shine.” I was like “Oh my God, Elvis is talkin’ to me…” (Laughs) And it was all good from there buddy! —Nick Durcholz
