Viking Assault

2013

N

o other race in the area features such an elaborate design of mazes, bars, hurdles, tunnels and walls. But while Viking Assault pushes you to extremes, it’s all in the name of having a good time with friends and family. Runners are encouraged to participate at their own comfort level, and spectators can catch all the action for free.

Co-Race Director Don Waters spoke with News4U about the evolution of Viking Assault.

Q&A

The Viking Assault survivor race returns to test the limits of physical endurance on August 3rd at the Vanderburgh County 4H Center. 3.1 miles of rough terrain and challenging obstacles, this event may just be the most fun you are allowed under the law.

News4U (N4U): This is the third year for the Viking Assault race. How did last year compare to the inaugural event in 2011? Don Waters (DW): Last year we doubled our participant

N4U: Was it difficult to find a good location for the race? DW: Well, there were a few things that we had to have in terms of

numbers in comparison to the first Viking Assault in 2011. This year, we are on track to double last year’s numbers.

course requirements. One of them was mud. We also needed a very large area. The best fit was definitely the 4H Fairgrounds. The staff and the personnel out there do a lot of course preparation for us – it’s ideal.

N4U: Do you attribute the growth of the event to word of mouth? DW: In 2011, we probably didn’t advertise enough. But the

N4U: What is the process to determine the course layout? DW: We’re always looking to improve the course. We add obstacles

people that did participate absolutely loved the race. They not only came back the next year to do it again but also told other people about it. The great thing is that anybody 16 and older can participate. Some people are really competitive and race against the clock, but we also welcome the runners that are just looking for something fun to do on a Saturday afternoon.

N4U: How did the concept for the Viking Assault race first take shape? DW: There is a large variety of these types of races taking place

across the country. The biggest is Tough Mudder, and Warrior Dash is a close second. Over the last decade, these events have really taken off. But there was no place within 150 to 200 miles of Evansville that staged a survivor race. We saw a need for a local event and just did it.

or replace them based on feedback from the participants. The idea is to keep the momentum going. The design of the course is such that the runners will naturally get separated as they go along. Realistically, the more challenging obstacles need to appear at the end of the race. Otherwise, for instance, you would have groups of people all trying to scale an eight foot wall at the same time.

N4U: Apart from a great race, what else can we expect from Viking Assault 2013? DW: Our goal is to make Viking Assault bigger and better every

year in every aspect of the event – from the course to the outside activities. This year we are introducing a mud volleyball tournament with 15 teams. And we’re going to have a total of five bands starting at noon - play all the way through the evening. This event is never going to be perfect, but we’re committed to making it the best it can be.

Fa i r

Summertime in southern Indiana means three things. Festivals, humidity and the Vanderburgh County Fair. The smell of corndogs will fill the summer air, July 22-27 at the 4-H Center, along with non-stop activities planned for all types of tastes.

O

rganizers of the 2013 fair promise something exciting for everyone, regardless of preference. This includes fifteen different food booths. Beth Schmitt, President of the Vanderburgh County Fair, says this year’s fair has been in the works a long time. “The fair never ends; you start where you leave off. You think you’re finished with one year, and then it’s time to start another. We plan yearround.” That’s understandable, considering what a wide variety of activities are planned. Entertainment spans from motocross races,

The daytime will be filled with contests and games, while each night will offer live shows and performances. One of the big headliners will be country artist Greg Bates, scheduled to play Wednesday night. Then there are the animals. You can’t have a fair without the animals. Visitors can expect daily livestock shows, including a variety of shows highlighting four-legged friends like swine, ponies and pygmy goats. To make all this happen smoothly, volunteers must play a large role. “We have

USI’'s New Harmony Theatre presents:

M

axson, in his 50s, played in the Negro Baseball League and regrets that he couldn’t cross the racial divide from his league into Major League Baseball. The play follows Maxson as he struggles to provide for his family financially and spiritually, to communicate with his son and to live the life he wants. The play was revived on Broadway in 2010 with Denzel Washington in the leading role. Elliot Wasserman is directing the play. He is the producing artistic director for New Harmony Theatre and the chair of the Department of Performing Arts at the University of Southern Indiana. USI produces the New Harmony Theatre. The play stars Marvin Bell, Gayle Samuels and Lorenzo Scott. The play also marks the professional premier of two tri-state children, Jada Hoover and Jazmine Ragland. They will share the role of Raynell, who is Maxson’s daughter. Fences runs July 5-7 and 12-14. On Fridays and Saturdays, the start time is 7:30 p.m.; on Saturdays and Sundays, the matinee starts at 2 p.m. Tickets are $28 for adults, $26 for seniors 60 and older and $10 for those 25 and younger. The New Harmony Theatre ends the month of July with performances of Cotton Patch Gospel. The bluegrass, musical/ comedy is by Tom Key and Russell Treyz. Harry Chapin wrote the music and lyrics. Chapin, a folk singer, completed the music shortly before his death in 1981. Cotton Patch Gospel tells the story of Jesus Christ’s birth and life. The twist? He’s born in modern-day Gainesville, Georgia. A single storyteller plays multiple roles and tells the story with some help from his “disciples.” The place and language change, but the story remains true to the Bible. The musical is based on the book The Cotton Patch Version of Matthew and John by Clarence Jordan. Jordan was a farmer and a New Testament/ Greek scholar. Eric Altheide, the resident associate director for New Harmony Theatre and an assistant professor of theatre at USI will direct. Larry Tobias will tell the story with help from Sonny Franks and Willy Welch. Also assisting will be Jolie DeVries and Jon Isaac Lutz, two Evansville natives. Cotton Patch Gospel runs July 19-21, 26-27 and August 2-4. Its show times are the same as Fences, except there will be no matinee performance on July 20. Tickets are $35 for adults, $33 for seniors 60 and older and $12 for those 25 and younger.

These performances will take place at Murphy Auditorium at 419 Tavern St., New Harmony, Ind. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit NewHarmonyTheatre.com or call 812-682-3115 or 877-648-7469.

PEF/ EVSC Summer Musical

present:

Disney’s

Beauty & the Beast

H

ours of effort and a true community effort are required to produce the Public Education Foundation’s Summer Musical. This community collaboration is exactly what makes this annual production, now celebrating its 25th year, so spectacular. A total of 102 high school students from the entire region, including Kentucky and Illinois, have been rehearsing since April to make this 25th Anniversary year production spectacular. PEF Executive Director, Amy Walker, said, “We want to celebrate 25 years with a grand production and that’s exactly what you get with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast!” !” Walker noted that although the expenses for royalties are higher when taking on a Disney production, the crowd pleasing performance is well worth it. Showcasing the best of local high school talent since 1989 can lead to some interesting tales in and of itself. Loyal patrons of the annual event may recall Belle and the Beast taking the stage 8 years ago, but this time the 3-year-old daughter of the 2005 leading lady plays a small roll in opening scenes of the 2013 production. Austin Tenbarge, a Harrison High School graduate, has had his eye on the role of the Beast for quite some time as he was one of the “itty bitty’s” as they are affectionately called on the set in the opening scene of the 2005 production! Now, it is finally his turn to become the sad, misunderstood and somewhat hopeless, Beast. North High School graduate Madeleine Gish is thrilled to be topping off her final year in the summer musical as the book-loving, kind-hearted Belle. Gish knows her audience will be expecting a lot from her performance, “I want to be as true to Belle’s kind and inquisitive nature as possible,” Gish says. She added with a laugh that it has been fun, yet challenging to developing this

familiar character while wearing an unfamiliar hoop skirt. She is looking forward to all of the pieces coming together on opening night. Another North Graduate is tackling a big role as the suave, smooth and unknowingly hysterical, Lumiere. Nicholas Smith is using this final performance as a jump start to his pursuit of a Music Education degree at the University of Evansville this fall. Smith stated that he truly appreciates the leadership of Director Sue Schriber and credits her as one of his role models in helping him choose his college and career path. Smith said, “It’s a lot of work, but what I am learning from such great role models is awesome.” PEF invites you to be their guest and experience Academy Award winning songs, an enchanted castle, vibrant costumes and the heart-warming tale as old as time in the Aiken Theater at The Centre in Downtown Evansville.

The show runs July 11-14 with evening and matinee performance times offering you 5 opportunities to attend. Tickets range from $8 to $18.00 and are available at The Centre box office or by calling 812-435-5770 ext. 211.

Live at the Ford Center

It 's virtually impossible to attend a concert these days without someone in the audience screaming out for the southern rock classic, "Free Bird " the song that has defined Lynyrd Skynyrd s career.

H

ow that song became the clichéd, go-to request at seemingly every show is a bit of a mystery. But it certainly helps to explain why 40 years after the release of the band’s debut album, they’re still drawing huge crowds from coast to coast. Of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s history is undeniably compelling, including a plane crash, endless line-up changes and legal battles. But at the end of the day, the music trumps everything. Evansville is lucky enough to be a stop on the current tour when it reaches the Ford Center on August 1st. By now, most fans are familiar with the tragic deaths of three members in 1977 just after the release of the band’s fifth album, Street Survivors. But 13 years prior, things started quite innocently in Jacksonville, Fla, where future Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zant formed the Noble Five with guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington. After a period of upheaval and musical exploration, the classic line-up was set and a new name borrowed from a particularly unappreciated high school P.E. teacher, Leonard Skinner. In 1973, after tweaking the band’s spelling, Lynyrd Skynyrd debuted with a multi-platinum album that launched a troubled but hugely successful career on the strength of the classic singles “Gimme Three Steps,” “Tuesday’s Gone” and the aforementioned concert favorite, “Free Bird.” The latter track has literally kept the band alive through loss and heartache, only gaining momentum over the years. 1974 saw the release of Second Helping, notable for the inclusion of the anthem “Sweet Home Alabama.” A reaction to Neil Young’s dark, controversial “Alabama,” it remains the band’s most popular song to date, having recently been re-configured and mashed-up with Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” by Kid Rock to create the smash “All Summer Long.” But just as the band was scaling new heights on stage, everything literally came crashing down as three key members, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, died after their tour plane ran out of fuel and barreled into a Mississippi forest.

A decade later, the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited with Ronnie’s brother Johnny Van Zant taking over as front man. Over the last 25 years, the band has been a revolving door of musicians - only Gary Rossington remains from the original line-up. But the revered southern rock sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd lives on with the current incarnation both in concert and in the studio. In 2009, the band released the patriotic God & Guns and followed that up with last year’s testament to longevity, Last of a Dyin’ Breed. Both albums were well-received by critics and fans alike. While you can expect to hear a few selections

from these latest releases, rest assured that all the hits will be performed with the same power and passion that made Lynyrd Skynyrd an obvious choice for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. And yes, expect to hear people screaming out for “Free Bird.” For once, the request will make sense.

The show starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. For ticket info, please visit thefordcenter.com.

The Alpocalypse Tour @

The Victory:

An Interview with

““Weird”

Al Yankovic You may not realize it at first glance, but this fellow holds within his noggin an expanse of creative talent.

W

Yankovic took a moment from his strange and busy schedule to chat with News4U.

What’s the story behind your first accordion and do you still have it?

I do have my accordion-I definitely have it somewhere. It’s pretty beat-up so it’s more of a museum piece than something I whip out and play, because I’ve had it since I was 7 years old. It’s the same accordion you get to hear on “My Bologna” and some of my early recordings; probably my first couple albums. It is a bit ancient at this point, but it wasn’t the very first accordion I ever played because when I started taking accordion lessons they gave me a little bass model, a little, tiny kid’s accordion. So, my parents and I just decided I should take accordion lessons when I was a kid because nobody is more popular at parties than the accordion player, of course.

Are there specific moments with your daughter that inspired the stories behind the books and could you share one of those stories?

I wish I could say there were. My daughter is my muse and a big inspiration but I can’t really say that she was a specific influence in the book. In a very general sense it’s biographical, but it is a work of fiction. I’m sure I drew from some personal experiences but I can’t point to any specific thing that I did or my daughter did.

eird” Al Yankovic has been a disc jockey, written and performed original songs and clever parodies, produced films, directed music videos acted and written children’s books. His most recent, My New Teacher & Me! released on June 25, is an engaging and imaginative tale for tots. He makes a great children’s author, surely, but Yankovic is better known for his ability to blaze a quirky, harmonic trail with his trusty accordion and has been known to skillfully cut a rug. His musical abilities have earned him three Grammy Awards, 10 gold records and six platinum records. Check out his most recent album Alpocalypse for some full-on belly laughs and infectious melodies with spot-on pop culture satire.

Can you name a song of yours that was extremely easy for you to put together?

When I first started out, I wrote parodies much more quickly. I’m not sure if they were easier or if I was more talented then, I’m inclined to think that I just didn’t care as much. (Laughs) I just figured, ‘I’ll dash this off in 20 minutes.’ Which, I think that was “Another One Rides the Bus.” I thought, ‘Oh, here is a stupid idea, I’ll write this very quickly and I’ll play it on the show Sunday night for Dr. Demento.’ And that song in particular, became a huge hit and was bootlegged around the world, got released and is now considered one of my early hits. I didn’t think it would be a song I would be playing in concert 30 years later.

Are there any songs you have included on your various Polka medley tracks that you think should’ve been originally written as polka songs?

Well, I think pretty much every song sounds better done polka-style. I think every time I do one of those medleys, the songs are all improved immensely. I’m only too happy to do it.

I can’t say I disagree with you. “Poker Face” has a wonderful ring to it polka-style.

That was one of those songs that everybody in the world was saying, ‘You know what you should do! You should do “Poker Face” but do it as “Polka Face!”’ And I had to say a thousand times, ‘Yes, I know…That’s my job to know these things. That’s what I do.’

The show begins at 8 p.m. at the Victory Theatre on July 27. Tickets start @ $35 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including victorytheatre.com, the Victory Theatre Box Office (day of event only) and the Ford Center Ticket Office. It’s important being honest and humble about things. We’re just people. That’s what I try to get across to fans: we are just people. We are just as excited to meet fans as they are to meet us. We are from west Michigan, which is not known for rock ‘n roll. We are signed to Pazzo/Universal Republic; these things don’t happen to people like us. The group has gone through a few member changes, but currently members include Kakaty along with Chachi Riot, Dave Grahs, Matt DiRito and Nick Fuelling. Pop Evil first hit the scene with a three-song EP in 2001. In August of 2008, they released their first studio album Lipstick on the Mirror with the help of producer Al Sutton, who also produced for Kid Rock. After their debut album, rock radio began to take notice of Pop Evil as singles from the album were released over the air. Their second album, War of Angels, gained national attention after its release in 2010. Their video for one of the singles featured UFC Fighter Frank Mir. They also released singles to be used for sporting events including National Hockey League events and ESPN broadcasts. Pop Evil began to send shockwaves and move

I just believed and kept working and working,” said Kakaty to Hot Indie Artists, “The future remains to be seen. We just kept going and working hard at it.” The hard work is slowly paying off for Pop Evil. They are currently on a nationwide tour with rock band Candlelight Red. According to Albany, New York’s Q103 rock station, Candlelight Red won the Guitar Center’s “Onstage” contest, which allowed them the opportunity to open for KISS and land a record deal. They have opened for Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed and Hellyeah. Candlelight Red, from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, will open for Pop Evil on July 11 in Evansville. The concert is set to start at 8 p.m.

The days of crossing the bridge into to Henderson, Ky. just to save a couple bucks are long gone.

T

he small city has donned a much more appealing and unique garb, fashioned from a recent bloom of local businesses, a focus on culture and a variety events new and old. This move towards a more diverse and exciting Henderson includes food, art, music, bars, retail and more. But fret not, the city is keeping its bluegrass-banded soul intact, with events and businesses that are just plain, simple fun and that embody down-home, country goodness. The streak of fantastic summer music festivals in Henderson continues this month with the Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriter’s Festival beginning July 31 and ending August 3. Named after a beloved Henderson governor, the festival this year will be hosted by a man who once called Henderson home named Kerry Kurt Phillips. Phillips is an accomplished songwriter whose hand(s) and mind are behind songs such as George Jones’ “I Don’t Need your Rockin’ Chair,” Joe Diffie’s “Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox” and Tim McGraw’s “Down on the Farm.” Those attending the festival will get to experience the songwriters’ perform their own hit songs and hear the stories behind them at various Henderson venues such as Delizio Gourmet Italian Eatery (more on them next month) and Rookie’s Sports Bar. The kick-off show will be at On Deck Riverside Bar & Grill on Friday, July 26 with local talent. Patrons might even hear a new song or two before they hit the radio waves. Some songwriters in attendance will be Steve Williams, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Jason Matthews and Tony Arata along with many, many more. This festival more than carries the down-home, country spirit of Henderson and is a must for any music lover. Visit www.sandyleesongfest.com to purchase tickets.

In they way of Henderson bars, there is Metzger’s Tavern. Clocking in at 106 years young, Metzger’s is the epitome of tradition and community with thousands of good times under its belt. It is also one of the last establishments in the state that still carries a three-way liquor license (food, beer and package liquor). So belly-up to the bar at Metzger’s for a hearty dinner and a cold one along with a helping of companionship. They even have a drive-thru window to get your food and frosty beverages (that includes those of the adult variety) fast! More great events and establishments to come! —Oliver Mason

JASON WATSON FOOD CRITIC El Rio Mexican Cuisine

1919 N. Green River Rd., Evansville, IN 47715 (812) 471-1400 Walking into El Rio I didn’t know what to expect. As I had heard, it certainly has a night club feel. I’m guessing the evenings can get pretty wild. Though, I’m here for the food, so let’s get to it. As usual, chips and salsa are brought and as usual, I grab some queso dip. They make a good starter, nothing fancy. Not sure what got into me, but I decided to order things I usually wouldn’t at a local Mexican operation. I began with Burrito Mojados (wet burrito). Oh my goodness! These two overstuffed burritos were smothered with a chili enchilada sauce and filled with tomatoes, onion, lettuce and seasoned ground beef. Much more than an appetizer for sure! Now for dinner. The Pork Carnitas was as great choice. Chunks of deeply seasoned and braised pork fell apart with a fork and proved to be a fantastic filling for the tortillas it paired with. I couldn’t figure out the seasoning on the pork, but I can say it was full-flavored and reached deep into the meat. Served with classic refried beans and Spanish rice, this dish became a new favorite of mine! Next came the Fish Tacos. Well-seasoned, lightly-fried tilapia filled three flour tortillas. Pico de Gallo, full of fresh cilantro, tomato and onion, garnished the tacos. A good portion of crisp lettuce and more Pico provided the side. With a small squeeze of lime, the tacos were awesome! Super fresh taste, nice and light and just right for a hot day. I highly recommend the fish tacos and El Rio!

Flame' s Grill

1013 S. Weinbach Ave., Evansville, IN 47714 (812) 475-8614

I walked into Flame’s Grill not knowing what to expect. This was to be my first barbeque adventure of the summer and I was ready! Flame’s is a small joint sort of off the beaten bath. Yet I was greeted like I had been there from day one. As often I do, I went with dishes thought to sum up the style and nature of the restaurant. Ribs and Fried Catfish, at a small, locally owned barbeque spot. I think that works. First, the half-rib slab was as big as my head! They had a nice deep char, a super-smoky flavor and smeared with a slightly sweet, slightly tangy sauce. I would have liked them a bit more tender, but the flavor of smoke, sweet and char came together wonderfully. With the ribs, I tried the Mac N’ Cheese and green beans. Both homemade, the macaroni was rich and cheesy and the beans were tender and stewed with spices and diced potato. Much like mom used to make, they were rather tasty. Then came the fried catfish. Accompanied with fresh, creamy cole slaw and crispy potato cakes, the catfish was spectacular. Crusted with a spicy cornmeal batter, the fish was perfectly fried. It hit the table hot, crisp and flakey on the inside with just the right amount of kick. Flame’s also does catering and if you like down home food, well prepared, you should probably give them a shot!

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Deep-dish Pizza at

Old Chicago

Way back in 1976, the very first Old Chicago restaurant opened in Colorado. It was started by two Windy City transplants who wanted a taste of home in the neighborhood. Initially just a small scale operation with a walk-up counter, Old Chicago has since expanded to nearly 100 locations across the America. Mike Thorn, the Director of Culinary Research and Development at the Colorado test kitchen, is a 22 year veteran with the corporation and a pizza genius. Most every item that appears on the Old Chicago menu was either created or overseen by him. According to Thorn, the corporation is in the middle of a brand re-fresh that includes replacing its New York-style thin crust pizza with a new Tavern pizza that he calls a “Chicago home-run.” Now, there will be synchronicity – a deep-dish and thin crust allegiance. But, as excited as Thorn is about the new Tavern pizza, he fully acknowledges that deep-dish is king. He was kind enough to break it all down from bottom to top. The Crust: “Every day we start with making deepdish dough from a special recipe. Every ingredient is measured in-house – no mixes, no blends. We have special dough cooks who carefully measure the temperature of the water for consistency – that’s what makes our deep dish dough perfect every time. We also portion and sheet the dough in-house. Then, the dough is proofed between one to two hours to a minimum of one inch tall – that means the dough is ready to be topped and served. Finally, the dough is brushed with butter for extra taste.” The Sauce: “We’ve got a sauce that is made from freshpacked tomatoes. Most pizza chains make their sauce from re-manufactured tomatoes. We partner with the Escalon brand owned by Heinz. In Escalon Valley, we specifically have tomatoes grown and harvested for our pizza sauce. Tomato sauce on a pizza should taste like a tomato – a fresh tomato flavor, not tons and tons of spices.”

Now that you are craving an authentic deep dish pizza, go visit Old Chicago at 6550 E. Lloyd Expy. Open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day.

T

here must be 100 pizza restaurants in the area – seemingly on every street. But, only one offers authentic, Chicago-style deep dish pizza.

The Cheese: “When it comes to cheese, we use 100% real mozzarella, and we actually spec how that cheese is made for us. We go to the manufacturer and tell them exactly how we want our cheese made. We make sure that when our cheese goes through the oven, it will blister. When you blister the top of the cheese, you caramelize the proteins and the flavor of that is undeniable.” The Toppings: “We buy all of our sausage from Fontanini in Chicago. Our semi-spicy pepperonis are some of the best in the industry, and we get our Canadian bacon from Hormel. We hand prepare all of our fresh toppings in the back. For instance, our chicken is seasoned with in-house Apple wood seasoning – we grill it, roast it and slice it. We also have great veggie toppings – marinated, sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh baby spinach tossed in 11 vinaigrettes and artichokes, just to name a few. We are adding to the list all the time.” —Thomas Ellis

What ' s ‘ Cookin

HoneyBaked Ham

1446 N. Green River Rd. Evansville, IN 47715 (812) 471-2940

I

t is a notoriously tough hunt, especially in the tri-state area to find an eatery that is fresh, fast and reasonably-priced. Places like this may be few and far between but one that definitely fits the bill, and goes far enough to write its own, is HoneyBaked Ham in Evansville. Whether you are in the mood for a light but satisfying sandwich for lunch, need a handsome ham for a holiday party or your family is craving a cool, scrumptious dessert, HoneyBaked has you covered. They offer sandwiches, frozen goods, a salad bar that is prepared fresh everyday, full catering menu and an assortment of baked treats. Speaking of family, when it comes to a family meal this place is hard to beat. Everyday kids 10 and under eat for free. Being a parent myself, I don’t think it gets much better. But it does…Seniors 55 and over get 50% off on Tuesdays and there is a military discount as well, but the most striking thing about HoneyBaked Ham is the freshness of their products. The sandwiches, salad bar, ham, etc. make the taste buds sing. It is uncanny. “Ours is not processed meat, you are getting true ham and turkey. The salad bar uses fresh HoneyBaked Ham and turkey and ham and turkey salad. The croissants and most other pastries are made fresh by us as well,” said HoneyBaked Ham Assistant Manager, Sherylon Douglass. Upon entering the restaurant I felt as if I was in a grandmother’s kitchen that had recently been remodeled. It was quaint and cozy but also contemporary and warm with a lot of space and a lot of light. When I discovered I was to sample four different sandwiches I was instantly ecstatic because I am a complete and unabashed sandwich man. It wasn’t long before the first one was set at my table. It was the Ham & Turkey Pesto, more of a wrap than a sandwich and one of HoneyBaked Ham’s specialty sandwiches. The flatbread brought an earthy flavor while the turkey and provolone cheese came in with the savory taste. Then, the ham added a subtle but revitalizing sweetness. It was not only balanced in flavor but in texture as well. The second sandwich was the Smoked Turkey Salad. Usually, it is hard to impress me with

a sandwich that is both cold and has such a funky texture but this sandwich achieved just that. The faint but consistent flavor of the turkey teamed with the savory Swiss cheese and an underlying zesty sweetness to make this sandwich pop. Third up was the Tavern Club, a customer favorite as well as my own and it is easy to taste why. It boasts turkey, ham, bacon, mayo, cheddar cheese with crisp lettuce and fresh tomato slices, not to mention HoneyBaked Ham’s Honey Mustard, which comes on all their sandwiches. It has nearly every major flavor and texture profile you could want. Savory, crisp, sweet, rich, earthy, fluffy, zesty-and it does all of this while keeping its lightness. The last sandwich was the Ham Classic, a cornerstone to the HoneyBaked Ham name that must live up to the title of “Best Ham Sandwich in Town” given by Douglass. My first bite of the sandwich lit up my taste buds like a pinball machine. The slightly savory and sweet flavor of the ham was showcased perfected on this sandwich. It is solid and bold but also keeps it’s lightness like the others. The title is more than within its grasp. For the best of fresh, fast and frugal with a wonderfully welcoming and accommodating staff, check out HoneyBaked Ham!

I can do anything from a small romantic dinner for two to a larger party, to weekly prepared meals that my clients can reheat themselves.”

hristin Pelsor of Music to Your Mouth: Personal Chef Service and Small Events Catering and A Simple Path, Training and Reverse Soup Kitchen works all over the tri-state to feed her clients. She didn’t start in the food industry, though. She received her Bachelor’s in voice (opera) from Indiana University in 2009 and was a semester into her Master’s degree when her husband was finishing up Optometry school. His residency led them to Louisville, KY, where Pelsor decided to pursue another artistic passion of hers: cooking! Throughout the stress of IU’s rigorous music degree program, she always found cooking to be a relaxing and enjoyable outlet. Moving to Louisville gave Pelsor the opportunity to be hired on as a chorister with Kentucky Opera (for which she still performs for) while going to Culinary School at Sullivan University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Associate’s in Culinary Arts and a Personal/Private Chef certificate from Sullivan in September

Music for Your Mouth & A Simple Path: Training & Reverse Soup Kitchen

2011. She also got to intern at Jack Fry’s, a Louisville fine dining staple. While attending Culinary School, she met Kim Jagoe, who was attending because she wanted to open a reverse soup kitchen in her hometown of Owensboro, KY. Pelsor loved the idea but was unsure where she would end up after her husband finished his residency and she finished her degree. As fate would have it though, out of all the job offers her husband received, Evansville was “…the only job offer that really fit his training and his desired scope of practice. So it seemed to be an act of God that I ended up moving to Newburgh, only 30 minutes away from Kim.” Pelsor partnered with Jagoe in her reverse soup kitchen endeavor, and they’ve been operating A Simple Path: Training and Reverse Soup Kitchen in Owensboro, KY since March 15th of this year. As a personal chef, Pelsor works out of her clients’ homes. She does their grocery shopping, works with them on meal planning and then she creates the meals in their kitchens and serves them. Pelsor shares, “I can do anything from a small romantic dinner for two to a larger party, to weekly prepared meals that my clients can reheat themselves.” According to Pelsor, “We are made to enjoy food, and I think we all have some deep connections with food. Yes, it’s our nourishment, but it’s also our health, our memories and sometimes it’s love. I like bringing those qualities to the forefront. Whether I’m acting as personal chef or chef instructor or friend, I like to take real, whole, fresh food from scratch and through the involved process of creating something delicious, show others that I care about them.” Music to Your Mouth, located in Owensboro, is open for business anytime Pelsor is not in the kitchen at A Simple Path. She shares, “We’re taking those who tend to be served at a conventional soup kitchen, and then turning around and teaching them how to serve, giving purpose and direction, as well as a sense of belonging in the community. It’s powerful. There are several programs in other parts of the country that are similar to ours. We tried to take the best qualities of their programs and make it fit the community and situation in Owensboro. We hope someday to help open a similar kitchen in Evansville.” As a chef instructor and partner at A Simple Path, Pelsor teaches her students (who are either homeless or trying to escape poverty) basic kitchen and life skills. On Fridays, the students of A Simple Path cook and serve the public food for lunch. The public may come into their dining room, located in the basement of New Life Church at 400 Crabtree Ave. and eat lunch any Friday that they’re open, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. They ask for a minimum $5 donation to cover the food cost and to keep the program going. Information can be found on their Facebook page regarding each week’s menu items. —Nikki Davis Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • July 2013

Questions:

1.) Which one of you is most likely to own several Snuggies and why? 2.) Fill in the blanks (Using one of your two fellow DJ’s). _________ was at the library checking out a book about ________. Explain. 3.) Which one of you would be most likely to have the most embarrassing dance moves at a wedding and why?

Bobby G of

Eric Cornish of 1.

Even though we act like ‘gruff, sarcastic man-boys,’ we all have wives and two young kids, so I would imagine we all have at least one. I will bet my house has the most, as my wife has never met a blanket she didn’t like. Give me a Snuggie and I look like the guy in the commercial who can’t use a regular blanket. Someone teach me how to Snuggie…teach me, teach me how to Snuggie!

2. Bobby G was at the library, checking out a book about old school, Hip-Hop. He was checking to see if his name was listed among the elite. I will go on record to say he should be. When it comes to karaoke, nobody’s vocals are more fly than Bob Biv Devoe! 3. I’ve seen Ryan bust-a-move and it is pretty darn embarrassing. Christmas parties, latenight bars in Memphis, Ryn-O ain’t afraid to let it all hang out. Considering Bobby’s moves are just as fly as his vocals, and I’m an expert in 90’s country line dancing…OK, nevermind. My moves win for most embarrassing. Dang. 40 | July 2013

1.

Well it certainly wouldn’t be me…only because my body is covered in hair…so I already have a healthy layer of natural insulation. My answer would be Ryan O’Bryan. Based on the numerous “hold me” requests I receive from him after lunch, I’d say he has some snuggling issues that need to be addressed.

2. Eric Cornish…a book about “pro wrestling

for babies.” Eric is a huge fan of professional wrestling, and the father of a young boy. I’d bet he’s already trying to figure out a way to get his boy into the industry.

3. Wow…tough call…I’d probably call this a tie

between Eric and Ryan. I definitely have the edge on both of them when it comes to soul. I’d just have to bust out my old school dance moves (Running Man, Roger Rabbit, Cabbage Patch, etc) and it would be over. But those two fellas would be so drunk that the risk of embarrassment wouldn’t slow them down for a minute! Sadly, all three of us would need to stop and catch our breath after about 2 minutes.

Ryan O’Bryan of 1. I’ll tell you who would NOT own several Snuggies; that would be Bobby G. The man is so hairy, female apes try to mate with him at the zoo. Seriously, you could shave him and make enough Snuggies for an entire family. 2. Eric was at the library checking out a book about One Direction because while he may come off as a good ol’ country boy, playing songs about bonfires and “muddin’” he finds the young, English lads harmonies to be quite infectious. 3. Isn’t everyone’s dance moves at a wedding embarrassing after a few trips through the keg line? I guess it’s only fair to give myself a little grief here since I’ve already picked on the other two (they deserve it though, so it’s all good). Rhythm is not necessarily my strongest quality. I can’t even get through “Rocky Top” without tripping over my feet.

Bowl for the

Cure By Abigail Adler

2013

P

at and Mike Rayburn know with each tumbling of the pin, Bowl for the Cure is helping someone defeat breast cancer. That is why the Rayburn’s, owners of CJ’s Willow Bowling Center, are proud to once again host the annual event. Now in its 14th year, this local event has raised over $230,000! Over 75% of funds raised directly benefit breast cancer patients in the tri-state. Knocking down breast cancer at this Susan G. Komen for the Cure event needs one final commitment to make it a success: YOU! Executive Director of the local Susan G. Komen affiliate, Sheila Seiler says, “Bowl for the Cure is accessible to everyone affected by breast cancer; it feels good to be proactive in finding a cure.” Seiler added that this family-friendly fundraiser doesn’t require much skill, bowlers of all ages and skill sets are welcome. Teams of five are strongly encouraged but individuals may register as well. All participants receive two games of bowling, shoes, goody bag, t-shirt and a chance at door prizes. Registration for adults is $25 and children age 12 and under are $15. For every $100 raised, that participant receives a pink ribbon cinch bag and gets their name in a drawing for a Kindle Fire. Bowl for the Cure occurs over the course of three evenings, July 17 -19, to maximize participation. Schedule your time to take to take a proactive stand against breast cancer by calling the local affiliate office at 812-962-2202 or via e-mail to info@komenevansville.org

Germania Maennerchor's

Volksfest T he statistics are fairly staggering: 200 half barrels of beer, 50 German and domestic beer taps, 1,400 pounds of bratwurst, 1,000 pounds of pig knuckles, 950 gallons of German potato salad, 480 gallons of sauerkraut, 15,000 kraut balls and 400 gallons of beans. And of course, the best stat of all: 10,000 people having a blast, enjoying the delicious food and drink at Germania Maennerchor’s annual Volksfest, August 1st, 2nd and 3rd. When you talk about Evansville traditions, Volksfest is on the short-list of the most beloved and best attended events. It’s an opportunity to come out and celebrate our German heritage at the biggest and most authentic ethnic festival in the area. While countless hours of labor are required to pull it off, it’s all done on a volunteer basis by locals who transform into bartenders, cooks and general daily workers for three days to keep Volksfest running smoothly – not to mention affordably. This year, in fact, the food and beer will be available at 2008 prices. Call it reverse inflation.

2013

Volksfest gets rolling at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 1st with a great German lunch, but the main event is scheduled for 6 p.m. when Mayor Lloyd Winnecke officially opens the festival with the ceremonial tapping of the keg. As the beer flows, several bands will fire up the polka music and set the stage for the preliminary round of the celebrity bratwurst tossing contest at 8 p.m. Tensions will undoubtedly run high. Friday promises to live up to all the TGIF hype with more amazing German food, polka music and the heart-stopping finals of the bratwurst tossing contest. Saturday is children’s day which includes a free lunch for the kids, lots of games, clowns and a German dress contest. The bands will polka well into the night until the kegs are all tapped out.

Summer Relaxation on

Roca Bar North’s

P a t i o

S

ituated directly off of 41 North, Roca Bar North is known for its fresh Italian Salad and Round-the-World thin crust pizza, but it has another strongsuit. The patio a Roca Bar North is quite possibly the most spacious and intricately styled patio in the tri-state area. It is both contemporary and comfortable. So comfortable in fact, that you are quickly immersed in a feeling of hanging out at a close friend or neighbor’s house on their back patio you have enjoyed for years. The landscaping around the patio is a big player in this vibe with small, dark volcanic rocks among the greenery and large, light, flat stones stacked to border and enclose. The feeling is further cemented by residential patio furniture and a stylish outdoor canopy for live entertainment. The patio plays host to live entertainment Fridays and Saturdays during the summer. July dates are as follows: July 5 (The Jimmies), July 6 (Acquired Taste), July 13 (Andy Norvell), July 19 (Nick Hamilton), July 20 (Lindsey Williams), July 26 (Scott Winzinger) and July 27 (Andrea Wirth, The Honey Vines). The patio is also fantastic for watching the game with friends, thanks to two massive flat-screen televisions mounted at a high angle and it makes for a fantastic choice for date night.

TERESA HALLER PHOTOGRAPHY

Andrea Halbig

H

er talent started out as doodling, but in a short time, it changed her life. Local artist Andrea Halbig’s business SnickerDoodle Kids has taken her love of creating art and spread it through the tri-state. SnickerDoodle Kids, located at 2804 Mt. Vernon Ave. in Evansville, holds paint parties and sells custom art, which is created by Halbig. She discovered her talent for drawing in high school by sketching a friend’s folder. She went on to study graphic art at Ivy Tech, where she took some art classes. In 2002, she married her husband Mike and they had three kids: Warren, 9; Kate, 7 and Oliver, 5. She was a stay-at-home mom who happened to have a knack for drawing and painting. Halbig says she would paint for herself but really got started when she was decorating her son’s room about five years ago and needed some art. “I couldn’t find anything at a reasonable price,” Halbig says. “It was all ridiculously high. I’ve always kind of been a doodler, so I got out my stuff and started painting and had a lot of fun with it.” It snowballed from there. She began showing people her art and had friends asking if she would design for them. Then, two-a-half years ago, her daughter asked for a painting birthday party. “We invited her friends out, and I set it up on the kitchen table and walked the kids through how to finish a painting,” Halbig says. “We all had some much fun that the adults, the moms, decided that we wanted to get together and do it, too.”

70 | July 2013

She began having paint parties anywhere she could. She set up in churches, basements and garages. On March 1, Halbig open her own studio, where she works five to seven days a week hosting canvas and wood shape parties. She holds private parties and some open parties, reservations are required for both. “It was always a dream of mine,” she says. “We just jumped in and decided to give it a shot. I would definitely say it’s been well worth it.” Halbig says her husband never wavered in his support of her. “I’d love to say how much my husband has stepped in and helped,” she says. “From me being a stay-at-home mom while he’s the only one out there working, to me working four to five nights a week, he’s been there; and been at home with my kids.” Her kids are just as supportive. “They come to the studio with me,” Halbig says. “They help me setup the parties. My kids love it. They think it’s amazing that we can create like that. They just think it’s so neat that mom has a job that’s so fun.” Halbig also thinks it’s neat she has a job that’s so fun. “It’s been very flexible,” she says. “I still get to stay home with my kids during the summer, during the day. I’m there when they get out of school, and I still get to do the thing I love.” Halbig also creates custom art. “I want to have the perfect idea ready to go in my head before I start painting,” she says of her process. “It’s very personal for me. I want them to love what I give them.” —Katye Snyder Orders for custom work, reservations, schedules and more can be found at SnickerDoodleKidsArt.com.

Todd Ballard

T

he music industry has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, but one thing remains the same: youth is king. With a few notable exceptions, the charts are ruled by teens and 20-somethings. Former Henderson resident and Christian music songwriter/performer Todd Ballard knows the odds are stacked against him. Having just turned 40, he has released the album of his life, Anthems, at an age when most guys are settling down for the long haul. But at least Ballard has a sense of humor about it. “I don’t care how much I think I can rock, I’m still full of gray hair. That’s just not cool,” he says with laughter. Ballard recorded the album in Colorado where he took a job at a church over 11 years ago. Still, he holds Henderson dear. “My family moved there when I was 10. I spent 19 years of my life there. I always refer to it as my home town,” he explains. Ballard grew up the son of a preacher, surrounded by music. ”We had an organ in the house, of course, so I always tinkered around but was never serious about it,” he says. But something clicked when Ballard turned 21, and he convinced his parents to buy him a guitar for Christmas. Within a year, he was playing in a Christian rock band based out of Owensboro called No Shades of Gray (in retrospect, amusingly so), traveling from city to city. An attempt at a

solo career soon followed, but Ballard felt increasingly disillusioned by his pursuit of stardom and sensed that God was pushing him towards worship. Then, in 2002, while attending his cousin’s wedding in Colorado, a local pastor pulled Ballard aside and offered him a job. The change in scenery would prove fateful. Inspired by the move, Ballard honed his craft and spent time hanging out at a local recording studio. There he befriended DJ Frank E, a world famous producer, and connected with members of OneRepublic. Always a fan of secular music, especially Angels & Airwaves, U2 and Matchbox 20, Ballard aimed to marry his words of worship with the grit of alternative rock. “The Anthems album was written with the mindset that I wanted to create something that sounded like rock radio, because if I’m being honest, Christian music is kind of cheesy. I can understand why people don’t listen to it.” With the help of his talented new friends, Ballard produced a very contemporary set of songs that has received great reviews but virtually no airplay on Christian radio. It’s a catch-22 that frustrates him to no end. “I’ve got a top producer for my first single (“Closer to Me”), and I still can’t get the song played,” says Ballard. But despite America’s cold shoulder, Anthems has charted in Ireland, England, Australia and New Zealand. With two children and more gray hair appearing every day, Ballard is no longer consumed with hitting it big. “It was a dream of mine when I was in my 20’s – but not at age 40,” he says. “But this is the door God has opened for me now, so I want to see where it leads.” Ultimately, Ballard hopes to sign a publishing deal that will allow him to write for both Christian and country artists. To that end – and to be closer to his family – he plans to move to Nashville this summer. “I want my kids to know their grandparents,” explains Ballard. “And I won’t always have to be on the road to make a living.” Thomas Ellis Where you can find Anthems: iTunes, Amazon.com, Family Christian Bookstores.

E-Cigarettes: The Smoking Alternative

I

n a series of graphic commercials, former nicotine addicts bluntly discuss the deterioration of their health, including amputations. One of the most affecting spots features “Terrie,” a lifelong smoker who has degenerated from a vivacious, attractive woman to a shrunken, wrinkled mess with no hair and a hole in her throat. With the CDC playing hardball, perhaps it’s no coincidence that electronic cigarette – or e-cigarette – sales are on the rise. In fact, the market now appears so potentially lucrative that tobacco giant Philip Morris recently announced plans to develop its own product. In other words, things are getting serious. E-cigarettes were initially viewed as a poor substitute for the true nicotine rush. But improvements in design and technology (and the strong arm of the CDC?) have helped this smoking alternative catch fire. While the jury is still out concerning the benefits and risks of e-cigarettes, the clean, odorless vapor that they produce certainly seems healthier – for both the smoker and anyone in proximity. And with smoking bans in place in cities across the country, including Evansville, it’s the perfect time to kick the old habit. The growing popularity of e-cigarettes means that more and more businesses, restaurants and bars

are welcoming patrons to “smoke” inside. For employers, it means greater productivity from workers no longer heading outside every couple of hours – they can blow vapor rings right at their desks. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved. If you are considering making the switch from smoke to vapor, the options are many, varying greatly in design and price. Introduced about five years ago, disposable e-cigarettes resemble the real thing and depending on the brand, last for approximately 500 puffs. The whole piece – including the battery, atomizer and cartridge – then gets tossed. The industry, however, seems to be banking on e-cigarette kits which contain the aforementioned parts as well as a charger. Rather than continually buying a whole new cigarette, the user can simply replace the liquid for producing the vapor which comes in either a bottle or cartridge. Dozens and dozens of flavors are available – from classic menthol to cotton candy. Evansville has recently pickedup on the e-cigarette revolution, and the products are now available all over town. In fact, there are two stores that cater strictly to the e-cigarette user – Cool Breeze Vapor at 1012 Boeke Rd. and Vapor Bank at 861 S. Green River Rd. Both carry an extensive selection of

brands and designs. You can also find a great selection of products at places like Stop-N-Roll at 2027 W. Franklin St., Goat’s Discount Smokes at 1310 N. Heidelbach Ave. and Goodtyme Gifts & Smoke Shop at 1925 Covert Ave. All three stores have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that can help choose the right e-cigarette for you. In addition to the options above, you can purchase e-cigarettes at some of our local bars. KC’s Time Out Lounge at 1121 Washington Sq. carries a disposable brand and Rick’s Sports Bar at 1531 S. Green River now carries starter kits. Say goodbye to the 4,000 chemicals you are currently inhaling. Try the vapor route.

Ratings are given from 1-5. 5 is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. 1 is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

Very bright yellow color, almost Fluorescent when the light hits it right. It is very mild upon first taste but there is a underlying boldness that arises still not overpowering in the slightest but noticeable all the same. A blend of spices meet and mingle it is tolerable, but so neutral in the consistency of the flavor that if you call at all upon my way of thinking, this lost water way may as well remain hidden. It is not bad really, however not the slightest bit memorable.

The nose has a very bold piney aroma. Extremely hoppy but blended well. Like most beers with this level of hops potency, it clings to the tongue and lingers a bit. I can see what the Ancient Egyptians found so interesting about this unusual flower that imparts a bitter, tangy flavor. I have found that when done wrong it can be overpowering and ruin the enjoyment of the beer for me, though if done right like this one it poses an element of mystery and intrigue.

Lost River Blonde Ale pours out a cloudy yellow from the bottle with a thin, white head that disappears very quickly. The smell of hops is present, but not overpowering. The taste, which is very good, remains consistent from the first sip to the lingering aftertaste. With a fairly light body, this beer feels great on the tongue. Depending on price and availability in the Evansville region, this beer could serve as an everyday treat.

The color of this brew is a ghostly yellow. The odor is as hazy as the appearance but it is not unpleasant at all. It is calming in a strange way with its very subtle hops and a faint citrus sweetness. The taste has me intrigued, the hops barely tease the palate before they disappear, there is a sour note but it refreshes then leaves a malty aftertaste when it goes down the gullet. Nothing about this beer comes out and socks you one but it is bold in its passivity and mysteriousness. This is also a fantastic brew for the summer.

Nectar IPA

Cutter' s Lost River Blonde Ale

Christy Moore • 3

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 5 Liquor Locker locations.

This IPA pours a small, white head with a reddish-brown or auburn body. The scent of hops starts out softly on the nose and becomes more noticeable, almost to the point where one can taste it in the back of the throat. The taste of hops stays on the tongue and roof of your mouth long after swallowing the beer. Nectar IPA is another great choice to keep several in the refrigerator for summer fun. This IPA pours a translucent caramel hue. Par for the course, the hops in the scent of the brew are very bold but they are not overwhelming. It is pleasant and slightly earthy. The first swig proves to be about the same as the smell but a bit more biting. The taste is quite bitter but gets more manageable as you drink. The aftertaste is also pretty balanced and accessible. For an IPA fan, I feel that this beer would be a solid choice.

Kona Wailua

Christy Moore • 5

Once again Kona has managed to make a terrific island inspired beverage. Paradise found is a very befitting term for this ale. Blending a fizzy citrusy passion fruit concoction that encompasses everything that I find appealing about a beer. Very lite and refreshing I expect many more good things from this little brewery.

Paul Bragin • 2.5

This beer pours a translucent golden color with no noticeable head. Without even taking a sip, the scent of passion fruit comes through very clearly. The taste is light and crisp, with more passion fruit. This beer works well as a substitute for sipping on a beach or next to a pool when a traditional beach drink like a margarita or a daiquiri seems old. Otherwise, another beer might be a better option.

Nick D • 3.5

This island brew pours a beautiful, crystal-clear amber. This smell however, is not what I would call beautiful. It has a moderate funk to it. It is not completely unpleasant but it is strongly questionable. There is also a slight smokiness. A striking taste indeed, sour, slightly bitter with a brief bite. The powerful taste actually fades nicely though. A pretty solid and unique brew but I fear it maybe be a bit inaccessible to most.

Flat 12 Walkabout Pale Ale

Christy Moore • 4

Well I Mustache you... what does a cartoon man with a barber shop quartet look about him, holding a football with a British flag in the back ground have to do whatsoever with Oz, which is somewhere over the rainbow, and the term “Walkabout” with is across a pretty big pond from Europe or Indiana for that matter which is where this beer is brewed. Aside from the confusing imagery that is perhaps code alluding to some secret subtle meaning that is lost on me, the taste is rather good and I would highly recommend you try it.

Paul Bragin • 4

The rich copper color of this pale ale looks inviting in the glass as the slight head vanishes rapidly from the top of the glass. The hop aroma present in the beer shows very strong, but pleasant citrus notes, much closer to grapefruit than orange or lemon appear. The light to medium body and refreshing citrus taste make this beer an excellent choice for summer cookouts and other gatherings with friends. This beer could easily become a favorite of pale ale lovers.

Nick D • 4

This pale ale has a deep amber hue and a lazy, yet slightly tangy smell. The odor is mild, holds a faint sweetness and actually soothes the nostrils instead of tweaking them with its hops. This is a well-balanced pale all with hops that tingle the taste buds then seamlessly fade away like a brief, early morning dream. The slight sweetness is present in the aftertaste as well as the smell and it ends the pull nicely. If you are an IPA or pale ale fan, this is the summer brew for you.

Cigar Review: For the Brews

I

f you are a beer drinker, match a light with a light and bold with bold. Buy a light cigar for lager (Sam Adam’s Lager) or a Belgian ale (Blue Moon). Pick a medium cigar with an IPA (Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale) or brown ale (Newcastle). If you like imperial stout (Old Rasputin), go for the full-bodied Robust cigars like Rocky Patel 1992 Vintage or an Arturo Fuente Hemingway. Bottom-line is that for those who like to experiment, this is a good way to relieve the tension of the day, think noble thoughts and dream of the future. It is also a lot of fun to have these pairings with close friends!

The sixth play in August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, the play tells the story of Troy Maxon, an aging athlete who never had the chance to break the color barrier in major league baseball and who now struggles against the daily hardships besetting him. Local

Book

Review

Veronica In/Out of Love by Lyndsee Priest

I

was pleasantly surprised when I read Priest’s first published novel. With less than 200 pages, the action moves somewhat fast, but I quickly got a sense of the main character’s loving and vulnerable personality. Priest’s Veronica is 20-something and brokenhearted after her boyfriend, Drew, introduces her to his new fiancée. She quickly meets Jorge, a temp agency owner, and develops feelings for him. Comedy ensues as Veronica has to deal with her feelings toward two men and discover who the real Veronica is, all while dealing with interfering friends and mothers. Priest’s novel has long been in the works. She started writing the novel while working a

full-time job and attending school. She finished the book in the spring of 2012. Priest said the novel took her so long because she constantly started and stopped it. Priest sent her book to Tate Publishing, which specializes in publishing books by new authors. “I am very excited and really nervous about the publication,” Priest said. “I was not expecting it would be published at all. I sent the book to many publishers last spring on a whim, and I received a response from Tate indicating they were interested.”

Priest will be available to meet readers and sign copies of Veronica In/Out of Love at 6 p.m. on July 27 at Bokeh Lounge at 1007 Parrett St.

This novel is Priest’s second book. Her first, which has not been published, detailed her move from Denver, Colo., where she was born, to Evansville. She received a degree in communications studies from the University of Southern Indiana. She works as a loan representative and lives in Evansville with her husband, Jon.

In just a few short years, It Takes A Village no-kill animal shelter has grown by leaps and bounds.

T

hrough partnerships with local veterinarians, animal control facilities, trainers and boarding facilities, this volunteer-run organization is now responsible for the rescue of nearly 1,600 stray, abandoned and surrendered dogs. Many of these animals have since been placed in “forever homes.” The community has shown great support for It Takes a Village from the beginning, but they need our help more than ever to keep saving our furry friends. Please consider getting involved by attending the Canine Carnival & Mardi Paws fundraiser on July 20th. The event promises to be pretty dog-gone fun for everyone, including the animals. For the adults, a beer garden will be open from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. with plenty of live music. Kids are encouraged to come out for face painting, arts & crafts and carnival games. Pets are welcome too, of course. Photos of you and your “best friends” hanging out at Canine Carnival & Mardi Paws will be priceless. Rest assured there will be food and drinks in abundance, so bring a crowd with you – and some cash for the silent auction. This fundraiser will help cover the costs of caring for the animals at the shelter – from food to veterinary visits. Any and all support from you is greatly appreciated.

The Lone Ranger Walt Disney Anyone else think this looks like Pirates of the Carribean meets Zorro? Maybe it’s because it seems like the entire crew of The Lone Ranger either wrote, directed, produced, scored or acted in the Pirates and/or Zorro movies. Jerry Bruckheimer produces and Gore Verbinski directs, who teamed up during the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Frequent collaborators, writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio are onboard from the Pirates films, National Treasure films and the rebooted Zorro films to name a few of the many. Hans Zimmer even joins with the musical score. Oh, and did I mention they have Johnny Depp? Depp plays Tonto, a righteous but outcast Comanche whose path fatefully crosses with John Reid (Armie Hammer). Reid is fresh from the East Coast with a law degree, hardly the gunfighter type and certainly not looking for a fight. After a violent attack, Reid is left for dead and Tonto believes him to be a spirit walker, or someone who has seen the other side, and cannot be killed. With Tonto’s pruning, Reid becomes the Lone Ranger, a feared outlaw riding for justice. Their target: Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson), a man whose greed has no boundaries, and so, only a man with no boundaries can pursue him. As long as they don’t try to make this too Sherlock Holmes-y with the partnership between Tonto and Reid, we may end up in the clear. It’s already too late for the Pirates similarities, and it will be quite enough to ignore that not only does Tonto look like Captain Jack, he is Captain Jack!

Pacific Rim Warner Bros It’s no secret where most of the money for Hollywood movies originates - overseas. Even the title is less discreet than most, but there’s no hiding from skyscraper-sized mech warriors and giant monsters from the bottom of the ocean, that this movie has Japan written all over it. With Guillermo del Toro at the helm directing, though, this could actually end up being done very tastefully. It could also just keep constantly blowing your mind thinking about what would happen if this actually happened, and how you would get a license for one of those things. Goliath monsters called “Kaiju” escape from (or through) a portal in the Pacific Ocean and like all enormous monsters, start wreaking havoc upon mankind, nearly destroying us. A counter-attack is formulated involving the creation of mind-boggling mech warriors called Jaegers that require two pilots, one for each side of their connected brains. Without this design, the story sounds pretty blah, but there’s a lot of different ways this could end up - say if one pilot decides to save himself but the other is dead-set on revenge. Charlie Hunnam plays Raleigh Becket, a washed up former pilot. Rinko Kikuchi plays his partner Mako Mori, a fresh from training new pilot. When humanity has its back against the wall, they decide to bring an old mech out from retirement and put their hopes in an unlikely pair of pilots. These pilots must literally bridge their neural synapses and fight together in one machine to save us from extinction. Here’s to hoping the story is as epically told as the monsters are big. —Ben Clark

A Good Day to Die Hard

20th Century Fox

Lightning may strike the same place twice, but the same person - five times!? The lack of a fresh plot begins when an intelligent (we know this because he’s playing chess) Russian prisoner, Komarov (Sebastian Koch) is visited by a well-dressed, apparently important man who offers to give him his life back if he were to return the file that he stole from him. He honorably refuses and the well-dressed man makes mafia-like threats about not allowing him to testify in court. The file is wicked important! Why? Who cares!? We know nothing about the guy whose file it is, nor what would happen if it was leaked, nor would we care if it did because this is a bad guy. In the meantime, John McClane (Bruce Willis) has gotten the word that his son (Jai Courtney) has been arrested in Moscow. Suddenly, the dad-who-was-never-there, decides he’s going to Moscow to find out what’s going on with his son. Turns out, junior is an undercover CIA operative in charge of protecting Komarov. After an unnecessary trip to Chernobyl, surprise - Komarov is only in it for the money. I’m not sure who I cared less about, the heroes or the villains, but I’m sure I couldn’t care less. The gratuitous action is semi-pleasing. Die Hard fans, but take it from a true Die Hard fan, skip this one and maybe the real John McClane will show up next time.

Oz the Great & Powerful Walt Disney

Upon learning of this movie, I had a suspicion that they were giving away the best part of the film by making it painfully obvious that Oz (James Franco) would undoubtedly succeed in becoming “Oz, the Great and Powerful!” I hate being right. The only chance at a great ending - ruined by marketing before it even started. Oscar “Oz” Diggs is a small-time magician, womanizer, always on the run, someone we definitely cannot sympathize with. He is carried away to the town of Oz, yes named after him before arriving, where he quickly meets Theodora (Mila Kunis), one of the two Good Witches. They share a few choice moments but Oz has other intentions, such as whichever witch he’s standing in front of at the time... not to mention a seemingly infinite treasure of gold and jewels promised to him if he defeats the wicked witch thus fulfilling his prophecy. So off he goes to see the - wicked witch. Only it’s Glinda (Michelle Williams), who is really the Good Witch of the South. She tells Oz that Theodora’s sister, Evanora (Rachel Weisz), is the real wicked witch. Meanwhile, Theodora has the hots for Oz while he falls under Glinda’s protection. Once the real wicked witch can no longer hide her true colors, Oz and the townspeople are in trouble. Despite his self-doubt, he helps the town devise a plan to fool the wicked witches into thinking he is as great and powerful as the prophecy suggests, with a little help from some smoke and mirrors. —Ben Clark Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • July 2013

cd reviews Lindsay Brandt

Call Me Red Self-released 4/5

Evansville may be known as a cover band kind of town, but it continues to produce highly talented songwriters destined for bigger things. The latest local artist sure to attract the attention of a major market is Lindsay Brandt. A red-headed country singer with just the right amount of attitude and twang, she recently made the move to Nashville to promote Call Me Red. The album is tailormade for the country charts; Brandt possesses the voice, the looks and the writing chops to pull it off. Lyrically, Call Me Red covers familiar ground, highlighting the endless cat and mouse game of relationships. Brandt seems to delight in the challenge, and the title track offers a playful warning to potential suitors: “I’m like a firecracker, honey/bold and bright/I’m a cherry bomb/I’m like dynamite/I’m the wild card out of the deck/they call me red.” Similarly, “Afraid to Love Me, Too” sounds the alarm: “Go ahead and do what you gotta do/yeah, that’s fine/’cause if I were you/I’d be afraid to love me, too.” “I Told a Lie” and “Fallin’ for You” both sound like hits in the making – the production is radio-ready. As with all of the tracks on Call Me Red, Brandt sings with the sass of Miranda Lambert but delivers it with a charming nod and a wink. Watch out, Nashville.

Kylesa

Ultraviolet Season of Mist 4.5/5

Let it be known that Kylesa just flat-out rock. But this quintet also understands dynamics. While Ultraviolet dredges up some serious sludge and sounds downright heavy at times, there are equally dark, post-punk moments that prove Kylesa intend to keep evolving. “Exhale” roars just like an opening track on a metal album should with some mean growling and Soundgarden-riffing. But what really impresses is the following track, “Unspoken,” which begins with menacing, spidery guitar work. The instrumental build-up finally gives way to a super-fuzzed bass progression and unexpected vocals a la Siouxsie Sioux. Wonderfully mysterious, this singing approach works beautifully and somehow packs even more punch. Another standout, “Steady Breakdown” traces Tool’s musical map to great effect. Half-way in, the song takes a melodic detour that repeatedly sets up a jarring return to the rock. “Vulture’s Landing” may be the best track of all with a nod to Fugazi’s staccato guitar style. Finally, “Drifting” brings this bracing, unsettling album to an appropriate psychedelic close. Six albums in, these Georgian metalheads have no fear. They allow the music to go where it wants to go, regardless of expectations. That flat-out rocks.

Devour the Day

Time & Pressure Fat Lady Music 3/5 For anyone mourning the break-up of Egypt Central last year, shed no more tears. Former bassist Joey “Chicago” Walser and drummer Blake Allison have returned as the duo Devour the Day with a strikingly similar sound. According to the band’s bio, the two went into the writing process “100% committed to delivering the truths of their day-to-day experiences, personal and professional struggles.” Unfortunately, they don’t appear to be nearly as committed to originality. Like many contemporary alternative metal bands, Devour the Day try to strike a balance between heaviness and melody, often segueing from rocking, machine gun guitar verses to big, soaring choruses. “Oath” is a good example of this formula; it reeks of Evanescence, right down to the opening minor key piano riff. “Reckless” wants to be an anthem for today’s youth, sounding suspiciously like 30 Seconds to Mars. The lyrics don’t particularly help: “We are reckless/we are young/we are fearless/finding our way in this world.” Somewhere, Jared Leto is phoning his attorney. Not surprisingly, the best tracks on Time & Pressure – “Crossroads” and “Drifter” – stray from the norm. The former is an electronic reggae song completely out of character for the band yet infinitely more interesting, while the latter acoustic track ends the album on a downbeat, reflective note – simple, yet poignant.

cd sidebar Locrian

Return to Annihilation

Relapse Records

Chicago’s Locrian says Return to Annihilation is a culmination of more than a decade of their sound. The album is beautifully dark at times, but sometimes reaches the point of just sounding empty and noisy. The sound is similar to Explosions in the Sky or Saxon Shore, but with darker undertones. If you’re in the mood for smooth vocals, choose something different. The vocals on this album sound like they were shouted and recoded in a big, empty warehouse. For the grand finale, the final track clocks in around 15 minutes. Fans of Horseback and Wolvserpent will tolerate this album better than most.

Palms

Self-Titled

Ipecac Recordings

Clemm

Bird Hands Self-released 4/5 Clemm is the name of electronic indie-pop artist Willem Janssen’s musical project, and Bird Hands is the Dutchman’s third and best release. As you might imagine, it’s a decidedly chilled-out affair that marries smooth synthetics, samples and occasional guitar with trippy beats. The relative plainness of Janssen’s vocal delivery actually works in his favor; it plays nicely off the intricately layered music. While Bird Hands is strong from top to bottom, “The Sewers” really captures Janssen at his best. It slowly builds from sparse bass guitar, adding and subtracting other instruments and sounds along the way. The beat stutters along, keeping the track off-kilter. Lyrically, it intrigues: “You open up the sewers and let the dirt come out/you slowly fill our house with the smell that chokes everything.” “Protection” surprises with a flamenco guitar intro before settling into a hip-hop groove with Janssen attempting a sort of rap that may not entirely work but sets up a great chorus: “Let me go, I need to run/I wear my smile just like a gun/it’s all I need for protection.” Final track “Recover, Uncover, Discover” is a soothing lullaby with nary an electronic gadget in the mix. The looping, reverb-drenched guitar chords and subdued horns are trance-inducing, and you are helplessly compelled to start the album over. —Thomas Ellis

From the spacey album artwork, down to the ambient sounds, Palms self-titled album delivers music that post-rock fans will love. The newly released album features members of the Deftones and ISIS, giving extra backing to an already strong ensemble. Songs like “Future Warrior” will give you a good dose of eerie instrumentals and unique singing. Be prepared for some long tracks, ranging from five to 10 minutes in length.

A Secret Policeman s Ball Teenage Crimewave MVD Audio

Synthesizers, dramatic lyrics and fast-paced rhythms make up this summer album. Nashville, Tenn. based A Secret Policeman’s Ball says the band had to overcome some heavy creative differences to put Teenage Crimewave together. The vocals are less than impressive, leaving the listener wanting something with substance. If you’re looking for a less polished, more garage-band version of The Killers, check this record out.

Unlisted Owner

M

ade with the help of friends and local acquaintances, the project was a maze of organization and scheduling, shot primarily on the weekends to accommodate the cast. But the challenging circumstances never derailed Brian, and the result of his determination is a truly frightening horror movie with plenty of comic relief. Filmed exclusively with hand-held digital cameras, the hyper-realistic, in-your-face footage recalls Blair Witch Project and the recent Grave Encounters. The story of Unlisted Owner centers around six friends who become just a little too interested in a local homicide after hearing a report on the radio. Arriving at the scene of the crime, they witness the body being carried out of a weathered home and loaded into an ambulance. Suddenly, a man appears and shares what initially seems like a ghost story: 15 years prior, in that very home, a jilted husband burned himself and his family alive. Mysteriously, the husband’s body was never recovered. Unsettled by the macabre possibilities, the friends resolve to uncover the truth – with dire consequences. Unlisted Owner recently premiered at the Fortnightly building in Vincennes. Director

Jed Brian spoke with News4U ahead of the viewing.

N4U: What horror directors have inspired you? JB: Eli Roth, who directed the Hostel franchise and Cabin Fever is probably my favorite out of all of them. But I also have a lot of respect for the legends like John Carpenter and Alfred Hitchcock. N4U: What do you hope to achieve with Unlisted Owner? JB: My ultimate goal is to get a theatrical release. But this is my first film, so if I can at least get someone to pick it up and release it direct-to-DVD or if I can get on Netflix – I’d be happy either way. But we’re going to aim for the top on this one and see what we can get attention-wise.

News4U (N4U): When did you first get interested in making films? Jed Brian (JB): In 2008, I wrote a script for a horror film called Meth House,, but I didn’t have the funding or the resources to get it made. With Unlisted Owner,, I was able to secure the help that I needed – from the actors to local fire fighters and policemen.
