The River Basin Blues Society

presents:

The Old

Dam Blues & BBQ Festival By Paul Bragin

The River Basin Blues Society will host the first annual Old Dam Blues & BBQ Festival on August 10 to benefit the Warrick County Special Olympics.

T

he event, which will take place at the Old Lock and Dam Park in Newburgh, Ind., will feature local blues acts Dale Niehaus, Rigdon & Gatewood and the HighRize Hillbillies, Honey Roy, The Jimtown Saints and Doug Wright and the Nomads. The Clay Street All Stars from Louisville will also perform. The festival will begin at 11 a.m. with a welcome and opening remarks. In between musical performances, speakers from both the Special Olympics and the River Basin Blues Society will address the crowd. The event will also feature a Bar-B-Q competition that festival attendees can judge, a bierstube sponsored by Cricket’s Bar and Grill in Newburgh and an inflatable zone for children. Admission to the bierstube costs $5 and a suggested donation of $1 for children playing in the inflatable zone. For Dale Niehaus, the opening act at the festival, the event marks another milestone in a great year. Niehaus won the solo/ duo division at the 2013 River Basin Blues Society qualifying competition for the International Blues Competition. The victory there earned him a spot at the IBC finals in Memphis, TN in January 2014. Additionally, he received a cash prize and free recording time at the D.K. Wells recording studio. “I have been playing music professionally for 42 years in the tri-state area and this year has been the most exciting in my career,” said Niehaus, who added that he looks forward to performing at Old Lock and Dam Park on August 10. “It will benefit one of my favorite charities, the Special Olympics, an outstanding event for young people. If you can only attend one event this year, this should be the one. I will be performing most of my original songs and will have some very special guests; don’t miss it!” For Lannette Miller, the president of the River Basin Blues Society, the Old Dam Blues & Bar-B-Q Festival promises to be an exciting event for everyone in attendance. “There will be music and food and fun for the whole family,” Miller said. Miller also looks forward to helping the Warrick County Special Olympics with the fundraiser. Miller believes there’s “no better cause than making some feel the accomplishment of being a winner.”

Rita DeKlyen, the Director of Development fo Olympics Indiana, noted that events like the Blues and Bar-B-Q Fest help make Special Olympics possible. “Southern Indiana must raise over $3 million to serve our over 11,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and we could not accomplish this goal without grassroots fundraisers like the fest.” Dale Niehaus will begin playing at 11:30 a.m., followed by Rigdon & Gatewood and the HighRize Hillbillies at 1 p.m., Honey Roy at 3 p.m., the Jimtown Saints at 5 p.m., the Clay Street All Stars at 7 p.m. and Doug Wright and the Nomands will wrap up the show beginning at 9 p.m. For more information, contact Paul Mattingly at evillejazzman@gmail.com, or go online to riverbasinblues.com. Smoke-Free Communities: After One Year, Hoosiers Are Breathing Easier By Casey Williams

Believe it or not, July 1 marks the one year anniversary of the implementation of the statewide smoke-free air policy, which former Governor, Mitch Daniels signed into law.

B

elieve it or not, July 1 marks the one year anniversary of the implementation of the statewide smoke-free air policy, which former Governor, Mitch Daniels signed into law. The historic bill was years in the making, but not without controversy. Some were against the law and were afraid businesses would suffer; many felt the law carried too many exemptions to be effective. After the first year, one thing is for sure, Hoosiers are breathing easier and business has never been healthier. More workers are now protected and smoke-free businesses are making and saving money. The City Of Evansville implemented a more comprehensive clean air ordinance in April of 2012, following the Vanderburgh County ordinance which took effect in July of 2011. However, many of the workers in the counties surrounding Vanderburgh had little protection from secondhand smoke in the workplace until the state-wide

clean air law was passed. Business owners throughout the state are now enjoying the benefits of clean air. “My employees like working in a smoke-free environment. The atmosphere in the tavern has improved tremendously and my cleaning costs have been cut drastically,” said Scott Smith, owner, Olde Downtown Tavern, Bedford. Businesses in Indiana were ready to make the transition, in fact, 97 percent of the businesses were compliant with the law. Health advocates are not surprised so many people are respecting the law. It has been a very positive experience. The facts are clear; over 70 percent of Hoosiers say they prefer smoke-free environments. “I did not realize going smoke-free would make such a positive difference; I didn’t know how bad it was to breathe in here, until the smoke was gone,” said Joseph Phillips, AmVets Post #66 Commander, South Bend.

“The state law was a great step in the right direction for many communities throughout Indiana that did not have any kind of law or ordinance in place to protect their workers from dangerous work conditions,” said Casey Williams of the Healthy Communities Partnership. Indiana’s smoke-free air law has helped Hoosier businesses save money and attract new customers, while giving Hoosier smokers an incentive to beat their addiction to tobacco. With fewer places to smoke, there has never been a better time to quit, and those Hoosiers that need help quitting can call 1.800.QUIT.NOW or visit www.quitnow.com for free professional help.

Visit www.breatheindiana.com to learn how Indiana’s work force is breathing easier, and how local communities can protect more employees and patrons from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Today, let’s celebrate, because we’re all breathing a little easier.

The Story behind the Song: An Interview with

Kerry Kurt Phillips By Thomas Ellis

H

ailed as “one of America’s favorite songwriters,” Kerry Kurt Phillips has spent the last 25 years in Nashville writing hit after hit for some of country music’s biggest stars including George Jones (R.I.P.) and Joe Diffie. Combined, his songs have achieved sales of over 45 million. Phillips will make a triumphant return to his hometown of Henderson for the upcoming Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriter’s Festival July 31st – August 3rd at Rookies, Riverbend Academy and Delizio. He kindly spoke to News4U about

his incredible songwriting career.

News4U (N4U): As a native of Henderson, how did you make the journey from a small town to the music capital of Nashville? Kerry Kurt Phillips (KKP): My family moved to Vincennes my freshman year of high school. In the early to mid 80’s, I owned a music store there and was playing in bands around the area. I was always a closet songwriter, but my mom convinced me to send some of my material to Nashville. Over the course of two years, I trekked back and forth, trying to get my foot in the door. Finally, I decided ‘if you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly’ – I sold the music store and moved to Nashville. I was in town for two weeks, got signed to a publishing company and never looked back. N4U: Once you were there, what was the key to not just surviving but actually succeeding? KKP: Humility. When I talk to people in seminars, I always stress that you should never approach any situation thinking that you know it all – be grateful for the opportunity. I learned the business by serving the masters – I ate crow for a long time and it paid off. N4U: Did you ever consider performing your own songs or were you content being behind the scenes? KKP: I never thought of myself as a great singer – all I wanted to do was create. I always tell people that the best gig in the world is songwriting. I get to sleep in my bed most every night, eat homecooked meals and be with my family. Songwriting allows me to have a life.

12 | August 2013

N4U: Have you had to change your approach to songwriting over the years to adapt to the more ‘pop’ sound of country? KKP: I simply do what I do. If publishers don’t see any value in the material I write, that’s fine. I’ve just always tried to be true to my craft. Thankfully, there have been enough traditional artists out there who have liked my material and kept me alive. N4U: What is it like to hear your songs recorded by someone else - are you generally satisfied with the results? KKP: It’s a funny experience. Sometimes my songs are recorded exactly as I wrote them and other times they become something totally different – different tempo, different key, different instrumentation. Sometimes I hate the results – even if it’s a big hit, I never get over it. But occasionally, the changes really bring something new to the song that I didn’t hear. N4U: On that subject, the Sandy Lee Songwriting Festival really seems like a great opportunity to hear hit songs the way the writers originally intended them to sound. KKP: You will hear amazing writers perform their songs in the rawest form. It’s going to be an intimate atmosphere – you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, experience every emotion depending on what these guys decide to play. And at the same time, you’ll help raise money for Riverbend Academy which provides the opportunity for people - regardless of their financial situation - to study the arts. ive years ago, Steve Terry and some friends started a website detailing “life in the Big O,” posting photos from the Owensboro scene and articles about events. After teaming up with a local radio station, the decision was made to stage a music festival to promote the website. “We brought in Loverboy as the main act. We didn’t really know what we were doing, and it was NOT a success (laughs),” explains Terry. Despite the failure, he and his friends vowed to give it one more shot in 2009, albeit with a new country music format. The stars literally aligned as both Jason Aldean and Chris Young were booked to perform just months before each of them scored their first big hits. “That put us on the map,” says Terry. Over the last few years, Terry has bought out all of his fellow festival investors and now runs the show solo. His hard work has paid off with a fantastic line-up of country acts on this year’s bill. “I’m really excited about it,” says Terry. “We’ve got a solid line-up of current country artists from top to bottom – Jake Owen, Justin Moore, Love and Theft, Colt ford and many others.” —Thomas Ellis

Downtown Evansvil e Criterium Race

By Brooklyn Solis

Sweat. Heat. An adrenaline rush…

The Burning Quad.

D

uring the intensely hot weekend of August 16-18, cyclists and runners will have the chance to push their bodies to the limit for bragging rights, personal victory and over $5,000 in prizes. Presented by Dan’s Comp and 40 lb. Sledge Hammer Productions, the weekend promises to promote healthy living and family fun in the tri-state area. “It was just an ongoing conversation between friends about the fact that we (cyclists, tri-athletes, runners) from the Evansville area always have to travel to do the ‘big events,’ or the lack of fitness event options outside of running 5k’s. I love bike racing and decided to put my money where my mouth is, and build new events that are on the level of anything you could find in the region,” said Owner of 40 lb. Sledge Hammer Productions, Chris Hubbard. What exactly does a criterium race include? According to the USA Cycling governing body, “A criterium is one of the most common forms of competitive cycling in the United States. Designed for spectators, criteriums are races held on short, typically urban, circuits between 800 meters and five kilometers. The fast paced events are usually 10-60 miles and usually last between 30 minutes

and two hours. The relatively short, closed course features several corners and gives spectators the opportunity to view majority of the course and [they] see the competitors many times throughout the race,” said Hubbard. The race course is a one mile loop located in scenic downtown Evansville that was designed specifically for high speeds, high energy and live entertainment. The running events will take place on Saturday and the Criterium will be on Sunday. Planning a safe and unique event is always challenging the first year but it is also rewarding. “I came to the downtown [area] as a kid in the late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s to watch bike racing. It’s great to be able to bring it back. My company, 40 lb. Sledgehammer Productions was started to bring bike racing to Evansville. We know it’s a long process and that the first year will be the hardest. Getting people on board to give us a chance to show them what this is about has been difficult. We’ve been extremely fortunate to have Dan’s Comp behind us, they get it. They believe in the concept of offering great events in Evansville. They see that getting people active benefits the community as a whole. We want to put on events that offer an alternative to typical carnival food, that you see at most events. It’s about changing what people expect,” said Hubbard. It is expected that over 2,000 people will attend the event. There will also be a few surprises and special guests. “We have two members of the UCI Pro Continental Team Hincapie Sportswear flying in to do the race, Joe Lewis and Blair Turner. That’s big-time because these guys have raced all over and they are coming to Evansville. In fact, Joe Lewis won the Tour of Gila Criterium race last year. It’s a major race and to have him here is unbelievable. We know that having this team at our event raises the expectations to a new level. Racers like prize money and we’re giving out a lot but they really want strong competition and we are guaranteed that with the Hincapie squad,” said Hubbard. They are already planning next year’s race and hope to put the race (and Evansville) on the USA’s Cycling’s National Race Calendar.

Multi-platinum artist Kirk Franklin has evolved from a young gospel music phenomenon to a genre-defying

figurehead over the span of two decades.

A

firm believer in collaboration, his songs have often veered away from a strictly religious focus to include elements of hip hop, pop and R&B - most successfully on tracks like 1997’s “Stomp” featuring Cheryl “Salt” James. Franklin has collected armfuls of awards during his career and penned a best-selling book. Currently, he produces a wildly popular BET gospel talent show. But more than anything, this multi-faceted artist is best known and most respected for his life-altering live performances. A Kirk Franklin concert often moves people to tears; such is the power of his message and music. You can experience all the glory when he comes to the Ford Center on August 31st in support of his most recent album, Hello Fear.

18 | August 2013

A musical prodigy, Franklin learned the piano at an early age growing up in Texas and quickly drew attention from the church crowd. Soon, he was directing choirs and writing songs that spoke to his relationship with God. Gospel legend Milton Biggham was in awe of Franklin’s talent and helped to forge connections and partnerships in the music industry. Biggham’s efforts led to the formation of “The Family,” a 17 voice choir that Franklin directed and eventually signed to a recording contract in 1992. A year later, the debut album, Kirk Franklin & The Family, blew up the gospel music charts and sold over a million copies. As would become commonplace with future Franklin releases, it stayed at number one for many months. A couple more collaborations with The Family followed in the mid 90’s, most notably Whatcha Lookin’ 4. This live album again hit number one on the gospel charts and also reached the top five and the top 30 on the R&B and Billboard charts, respectively. In 1997, Franklin disbanded The Family and formed Nu Nation, recording an album that further embraced contemporary music. God’s Property produced the monster single “Stomp” featuring Cheryl “Salt” James and made Franklin a household name in the industry. No longer considered just a religious singer, he experienced a backlash from longtime fans but gained a whole new audience. 1998 saw the release of Nu Nation Project, yet another huge album that topped the gospel charts for 49 weeks. The lead single, a cover of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me,” featured a cast of mainstream artists from different genres. The turn of the century ushered in a new solo era for Franklin. The massive choirs were gone, but the hits kept coming on releases such as 2002’s The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin, 2005’s Hero and 2007’s The Fight of My Life. Keeping pace, all of these albums reached the top of the gospel charts and performed well on both the R&B and Billboard charts. In 2011, Franklin released Hello Fear. It featured collaborations with Marvin Sapp and Rance Allen and stands as one of the most acclaimed albums of his career. Visit thefordcenter.com for more information. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30.

N4U: What is your favorite memory tied to the game? MR: It would have to be shooting a 31 on the back nine at Augusta National.

H

ailing from Madisonville, Ky., PGA Professional and Director of Golf at Evansville Country Club Mike Reynolds is likely among the most knowledgeable players in the area with 44 years in the game. He played golf in

college at Morehead State from ‘75-‘79 and played in high school at Madisonville North Hopkins. He has passed his skill and passion on to so many others in the area and has a strong desire to keep teaching and to see where the game takes him. News4U (N4U): What is your favorite aspect of the game itself? Mike Reynolds (MR): Since I got into the golf business, my forte is really taking care of people. I’m in the people business. I try to entertain the highest level of service that I can and make sure that people are accommodated in a way that they would expect in a private club setting. N4U: Who/What got you into golf? MR: Well, I got started playing golf when I was 12, it was my good friend who lived down the street from me, who lived on the second hole of the City Park Course in Madisonville. From there, we played a lot of golf as kids and then I got more attracted to golf when I started to work in the business and work for Kent Cayce, who was at Madisonville Country Club at the time and eventually moved up here to Evansville Country Club where I began as an assistant when I got out of college. He was my mentor in the business and also was my instructor for my game, and really laid the foundation for the things I’ve been able to pursue.

20 | August 2013

N4U: Describe the feeling you get after taking a swing and the ball goes exactly where you wanted it to go. MR: I’d say it’s the epitome of playing golf. I’d say the next best thing to that would be holing a 40 or 50 footer (putting) or making that three-footer to win an event. N4U: In your opinion, what is the most challenging aspect of the game? MR: I think it’s when you find yourself low in confidence. When you go out and you don’t meet your expectations, which is pretty often, and then you have to try to find a way to tee it up again or play the next round, or hit the next shot for that manner. When you hit a bad shot, it’s hard to come back from it. N4U: What is your favorite course to play in the Evansville area other than ECC and why? MR: I love the Donald Ross course at French Lick. I’m a huge Donald Ross fan. I love the old-style architecture. N4U: What advice would you give to someone who is really serious about wanting to be skilled at the game of golf? MR: Definitely seek the advice of a teaching professional, a PGA professional, that being me (laughs). But without taking instruction and really following some good, sound advice this game isn’t impossible to play, but it is highly unlikely you’re ever going to develop skills that are going to allow you to enjoy the game to the level you would expect to enjoy it at. But what makes it really great, the game that it is, is that it’s a game of a lifetime. For more information please visit www.evansvillecountryclub.org or call 812-425-2243.

Charlie Worsham at the

Victory

By Thomas Ellis

Evansville continues to attract the biggest up-and-coming country acts, and Charlie Worsham is the next big thing set to rock the River City at the Victory Theatre on August 15th as part of the Summer Country Nights concert series.

H

ailing from Mississippi, the 27 year old Worsham has been building a loyal following over the last few years. His appearance alongside Taylor Swift on her 2011 tour helped to generate interest from major labels, eventually resulting in a contract with Warner Bros. Records. “Could It Be,” Worsham’s debut single, was released earlier this year and has received serious airplay on country radio while the video continues to rack up views on Youtube. On the heels of the song’s success, Warner Bros. plans to release the singer’s first full album, Rubberband, in August.

24 | August 2013

A talented multi-instrumentalist, Worsham also writes much of

his own material, a rarity in country music. His sound is similar to current chart-toppers like Jake Owen and Rodney Atkins with lyrics that detail the promise of love: “Could it be I’m finally holding what I’ve been hoping for / Could it be the end of just friends and the start of something more / Oh the way I’m feeling now, it’s worth sticking around to see / Is this love or could it be?” By all accounts, Worsham is right at home on stage – it’s where he’s meant to be. According to his bio, as a kid he “was always out playing somewhere, from the Opry at age 12 to the local Missionary Baptist Church to the back-road blues joints.”

Come out and see a star in the making on August 15th at the Victory. The show starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more information, please visit victorytheatre.com.

JASON WATSON FOOD CRITIC LY L E ' S S P O RTS B A R

1 4 0 4 E . M o rg a n Ave . Eva n sv i lle 81 2- 42 5 -7 72 9 Lyle’s was a treat. What used to be Ford’s Bar on Morgan Ave has been cleaned up and has stepped up. Lyle has taken a ton of pride in his ownership and you can tell by the food, the atmosphere and the service. We went tavern food this month, which didn’t bother me one bit! I started off with a cocktail and a Lyle’s Famous Loaded Stromboli. Strom’s have held a very special place in my heart since childhood. Messy, cheesy, toasty, a pinch spicy, and certainly filling, the boli was filled with sausage, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and a healthy portion of mozzarella on a perfectly toasted hoagie. This sandwich is sure to please any strom lover! Next, was a Hot Ham and Cheese. Again, a toasted hoagie set the stage for plenty of mozzarella, with wonderfully toasted, slightly salty, thick cut slices of ham. Bar food at its finest. Lyle’s fiancé, who was bartending that evening, treated me to a stellar cucumber salad. Full of GARDEN FRESH cucumber, tomato, bell peppers and dressed with a sweet vinaigrette. I felt like my mother had just made me one of my favorites. Lyle’s impressed without needing to overdress. Check out the weekly entertainment, and grab a hot sandwich while you are there.

1 0 0 0 Powe ll St. H e n d e rs o n, KY 270 - 826 -9461 Again, it’s tavern time. Hate to be long winded, but first things first. I brought my 2 year old daughter Abby, on this trip and she was treated like a queen. The hospitality we/she received was unthinkable. Greeted with smiles, suckers, a skinless hot dog, and Dora The Explorer on the tube, these guys made her feel like a big girl, right at home. For this I am extremely grateful!!! Dad’s menu gave no exceptions. A half bowl of chili with a 70 year old recipe and a pinch of pasta was my starter. Full of chili powder, a bit of cumin, just the right amount of bean (pinto at that) and beef, it’s no wonder this recipe has stuck around. Now a spicy polish sausage, sliced and seared, served on a hamburger bun, with onion and pickle. Steve said ‘kinda spicy,’ I thought quite spicy, and dang delicious. After was a ribeye steak sandwich, again, on a hamburger bun, well-seasoned, with sautéed onions. Tavern food yes…tasty for sure! These gentlemen treated myself and my daughter like the only customers they have ever had. The truth is Metzger’s has been around since the 40’s. The food is relaxed like the bar, the atmosphere is old world, the service is excellent! I’ll be back to check out the renovations and slightly stepped up menu, when that time comes (on the way). You have to check this place out at least once for yourself…great times. Abby’s favorite part was the ketchup!!

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Refreshing, Invigorating Gelato from

Jeanne’s Gelato

Ewers imagines that she has created over 200 flavors of gelato over the last six years, although the classics are still the favorites. Not surprisingly, chocolate reigns supreme. Still, the possibilities are endless – from honeydew melon to honeysuckle. Ewers even has contests for flavors. “Last time, someone came up with sweet potato,” she says. “We did a twist on it and added cinnamon and marshmallow to create sweet potato pie. It was delicious.” Recently, Ewers has experimented with mixing wines with fresh ingredients like pears. She is clearly still as excited by gelato as when she first discovered it in California years ago. “The most rewarding part for anyone who owns a gelato business is to see the look on the customer’s face – and the smile. Most people haven’t ever tasted something so fresh and with so much zing to it.”

—Thomas Ellis

Jeanne’s Gelato also serves amazing paninis, soups, cakes, cookies and brownies. For more information, call 479-8272.

S

ome years ago, Valerie Ewers was traveling in California and became quite thirsty. She stopped in for a drink at a nearby shop and came face to face with something that looked a bit like ice cream but had a texture more like pudding. It was labeled “gelato.” Intrigued by the selection of flavors, she ordered mango, coconut and lemon. “It was the best thing I had ever tasted,” she recalls with a smile. “It was one of those ‘wow’ moments. The flavors just came alive – they were so intense, so refreshing, so dazzling.” Back in Evansville, Ewers kept thinking about that California gelato. She discussed the idea of opening a store here in town with her sisters – after all, the product was so good and no other such business existed in Evansville. But what would she call it? “Valerie’s Gelato” didn’t have much of a ring to it, but her middle name (also her mother’s) seemed to pop. Jeanne’s Gelato opened downtown six years ago. Ewers moved her store to 2003 Lincoln Ave. three years ago, a location she long coveted. It’s the ideal spot for a dessert business, just on the edge of the UE Campus and a door down from the ever-popular pizza joint, The Slice. Now quite comfortable in her new surroundings, Ewers truly enjoys introducing people to the ‘wow’ factor of gelato. She is quick to point out the differences between this Italian treat and traditional ice cream. “There is less air, less butterfat – both which tend to mask the flavor. That’s why the taste of gelato comes through right away – it’s cleaner,” explains Ewers. “Also, the temperature is warmer, so the texture is different. But most importantly, no imitation flavors are used. Only the freshest ingredients are used – fresh fruits, fresh nuts, literally anything you can think of – the end result is incredibly vibrant.” The process for creating gelato is equally organic. “You start by blending your fresh fruit or pre-gel flavoring (made with real ingredients) and gelato base of milk and sugar. Then, you put it in the refrigerator and let it set for about 30 minutes which keeps ice crystals from forming,” explains Ewers. “The mix is then placed in a batch freezer which both blends it and freezes it at the same time. Finally, you place the mix in a blast freezer which helps it set. When you put the gelato in the display case, it sits at eight degrees rather than zero degrees like ice cream. It stays cold but not completely frozen.”

What ' s ‘ Cookin

Delizio Gourmet Italian Eatery

I

t’s easy to write off restaurants with one specific style as humdrum, especially with fairly common themes to our area like Italian and Mexican, but to do so with Delizio Gourmet Italian Eatery in Henderson would be a huge mistake. Delizio makes a loud, bold statement in the many voices of the tri-state’s Italian cuisine scene making nearly everything from scratch with new lunch and dinner options daily and an atmosphere unlike any other. They also boast a café with hot or iced beverages and a cool, contemporary bar complete with an extensive selection of adult beverages and live music. There are two entrances to the stately structure that Delizio calls its home on the corner of 2nd and Main Street. The corner entrance takes you straight into the bar but I entered via the side entrance facing Second Street. Upon entering, I encountered a long lobby area painted warmly with a door in the back right corner. Walking though this door, I came upon Delizio’s true spirit. On the left is a Golden Age, chrome-lined deli counter and to the right is the large, elegant but not stuffy dining room. The half-circle shape of the room and the high ceiling, along with the original multi-colored, small tile floor puts out the vibe of an old theater or courthouse. It gives you a feeling of purpose and importance but keeps its comfort. It has contemporary touches but the building’s history is kept intact. It is a striking room with the café area at the very back. Now for the food. The first dish that arrived was one of Delizio’s starters, the Arancini. This dish was so visually appealing with brown, light orange and a dash of purple and green in the garnish on top it seemed a shame to disturb. It held wonderful symmetry. The taste was as pleasantly earthy as the color. The tomato sauce was bright and tangy, perfectly framing the savory spicy sausage. A great precursor to a meal but be careful, this one is filling. Second was another starter, a salad called the Insalata Balboa. The second word of its name is more than fitting because this is one of the heftiest, flavorful salads I have ever encountered. It keeps a fantastic, fresh texture while giving you a full house of flavors. It holds savory from the salami,

mozzarella and pepperoni, spicy from the pepperoncinis, earthy from the artichoke hearts and Kalamate olives and sweet as well. Incredible, but almost more filling then the Arancini. The third dish was my first entrée. It was the Lasagna. I didn’t expect anything too special with the typical Italian dish but I was in for a surprise. First the vibrant reds, oranges and tiny greens on the dish caught my eye and I could tell just by looking how bold and zesty it would be. I was right. While most other lasagna’s flavor stays passive at a medium-grade plateau, this lasagna was packed with sharp but comforting flavors. The savory spicy sausage, mozzarella and Pecorino Romano cheeses oppose the tangy, bold but smooth tomato sauce in an even draw. I would cross the bridge specifically for this Lasagna. The fourth and final dish was the Salmone Con Pomodoro or pan-seared Salmon. The Salmon was the obvious star here, so tender in texture but smoky and mildly spiced in flavor. Wow! The pasta is cooked perfectly and the baby orange tomatoes add a tangy, sour and sweet flavor that knocks the dish out of the park. Delizio is doing Italian right. That is the bottom line. With bold flavors, fresh ingredients and a creative but not overwhelming selection of food you cannot pass them up.

ecently opened NW Chophouse & Wine Bar has a lot to offer those in Newburgh. Priding themselves on “great tasting food that’s prepared fresh with the highest quality of ingredients,” the restaurant has fresh fish flown in daily, as well as offering expertly butchered USDA Prime Steaks. Executive Chef and Owner Nick Weisenborn and his staff offer a wide variety of nutritious meals as well as a full service bar. Located in Newburgh at the intersection of Hwy 66 and Hwy 261 in the Walgreens/Hucks complex, NW Chophouse & Wine Bar is open for lunch and dinner throughout the week. Weisenborn is a native of the St. Louis area who moved to the tri-state to be closer to family. Weisenborn was previously a pilot for Vision airlines. He graduated with a degree in Aviation Management and received his Commercial Pilot’s License from the North American Institute of Aviation. Since he was a teenager though, Weisenborn

had worked in restaurants, and that was the background to which he returned to when he moved to Newburgh with his three daughters after his work as a commercial pilot. Since coming to the area, Weisenborn has went back to his roots and has become “seasoned in a wide variety of classic and contemporary techniques.” His experience spans a wide range of areas including American, Asian, Fusion and custom menus, and his culinary employment experience includes: The Library (Myrtle Beach, SC), Charlie Gitto’s (St. Louis, MO), Madeline’s (Evansville, IN), Firefly Southern Grill (Evansville, IN) and Steak and Take Grill (Newburgh, IN), which he was the owner/operator from 2011-2013 before he opened NW Chophouse. When asked what drives Weisenborn to do what he does, his response was, “I’m success driven, and I’m an artist. My canvas is food. I love creating new dishes.” He shares that his favorite thing about Newburgh is its downtown area, and his favorite dish on their menu is the lamb. His favorite item to cook though, is the bone-in filet mignon. For the lunch crowds, Weisenborn recommends the blackened shrimp mac-n-cheese. He shares, “It’s my top pick because it is a very attractive and delicious.” For dinner, he recommends the fresh catch because, “it’s an outlet for my creative side.” In addition to their large variety of plated dishes, guests should consider the restaurant’s wide variety of salads as a meal or to accompany their main dish. They offer a Chophouse salad, a Strawberry & Gorgonzola salad, a seared Pear & Arugula, as well as chef and side salads. Weisenborn also shares, “We only buy the highest quality ingredients, and unlike other steakhouses we truly butcher all the meats in house, such as bone-in Rib eyes, bone-in Filet mignon and bone-in Strip steaks. We also age all our beef for 21 days or more, and the beef is [from] an all-natural steroid free animal.” When asked why Weisenborn chooses to use all-natural steroid free animals, his response is, “When an animal is given steroids the steroids cause the animals to grow at an unnatural rate which causes stress on the cow and its body. This process causes the cow meat fibers to be more coarse and not as tender and flavorful. When using an all-natural, 21-day-aged steak, it guarantees tenderness and flavor.” Weisenborn also adds, “We have one of the best wine and bourbon lists in the area.”

Questions:

1. Fill in the blanks: ___ should have a tattoo of ___ on their___ because___. 2. Which one of you would be most successful on Discovery Channel’s Naked & Alive and why? 3. Which one of you would be most likely to be ejected from a sporting event and why?

T-Rav of

Jon of 1.Travis should have a tattoo of the Fox News logo on his butt. The reason for that is because I think he would like nothing more than to have Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter put a big ol’ lip-lock in the same place he is always suggesting they have lunch sometime.

2. I think I would be best suited for Naked & Alive because I would be in the least danger by far. My wife won’t even go near me when I’m even semi-naked so, it’s a sure bet that no creature, wild or otherwise would even consider getting close to me in the wilderness if I were naked…No matter how hungry they were. 3. I think it would be a tie between Kat and I as far as who is most likely to get thrown out of sporting event. Kat is not the biggest sports fan in the world, so doing something to get herself thrown out would put an end to her misery. I would get thrown out for the same reason I outlined in question #2. The more beer I drink at a sporting event, the more I want to loosen my belt and undo the front of my pants and it goes straight downhill from there. If it’s an Otter’s game, it gives a whole new meaning to a suicide squeeze…. Do ya feel me?

40 | August 2013

1. Jon should have a tattoo of the old WKDQ

Rabbit mascot on his chest because I think he owes me for all the times I spent in that mascot costume. Way back in the days when I started interning at Townsquare Media (back then it was Regent Communications). Trying to be entertaining while trapped in the broiling confines of that costume was not for the weak.

2. Kat, for sure. Considering her work with local Humane Societies, I think she now possesses some sort of “Cinderella magic.” The animals of the island would just end up doing her bidding. I think the only thing that would hold her back would be missing a few episodes of The Voice. 3.

I’m going to go with me on this one. Why would I be kicked out? Streaking. I’ve been working hard to lose weight and tone up lately. I’ll be damned if I keep my clothes on once I hit my goal!

KAT’S PHOTO IS KEVIN BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY

1. I should have a tattoo of a cassette tape

on my wrist because, well, I’ve always wanted one! Besides, I’m the only one of us with a bunch of tattoos already! LOL

2. It would definitely be Jon that would be most successful! I have the feeling he has some Bear Grylls-style survival skills up his sleeve for sure! I bet he’s one of the few men who can actually make fire with just two sticks! 3. I think T-Rav would be the one to get ejected from a sporting event. I can imagine it in my head... He’s standing up yelling at the ref over a call that he doesn’t agree with in a way that only T-Rav can, and the ref would look at him and yell, “You’re outta here!”

Annual Stock the Pantry Cornhole Tournament By Thomas Ellis

T

he Boys & Girls Club of Evansville presents the 4th Annual Stock the Pantry Cornhole Tournament on August 17th at the Tropicana Events Plaza / Tropicana Evansville (formerly Casino Aztar). The tournament is the primary funding source for the Stock the Pantry Program which serves to provide members of the Boys & Girls Club with healthy snacks after school and during the summer. Of all the cornhole events in the area, this is the biggest. The tournament begins at 11 a.m. with check-in and late registration from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. In addition, a bierstube featuring three live bands begins at 6 p.m. Team registration for the event is $55; additional sponsorship opportunities are available. Dig Into

Music Concert Series at Central Library

T

he Evansville Public Library’s Dig Into Music concert series continues in August with two highly anticipated performances from Andy Norvell (August 7th) and Likewise (August 21st) in the lobby of Central Library downtown. Both shows are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The summer concert series gives the community an opportunity to hear some of the area’s best music for free. Previous performances in June and July included sets by Monte Skelton, Kennedy Rose, The Vintage Rendition and Zion. A Henderson native, Norvell spent several years studying the music business at Nashville’s Belmont University. Since 2004, he has been playing acoustic shows in and around Evansville, delighting crowds with his unique take on popular songs of the day as well as rock classics. Norvell’s music may be acoustic, but he uses technology to create loops and layer his sound. The effect is that of a oneman band. Likewise, a duo featuring Matt Cassidy and Ben Dahlquist, was recently the subject of News4U’s Soundboard article which puts the spotlight on exceptional local musical talent. The two have been playing shows all over Evansville and Newburgh at places like Tin Fish and Greek’s Pizzeria. With harmonies reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, Cassidy and Dahlquist have a bright future ahead. —Thomas Ellis Come support the Dig Into Music concert series. Admission is free. For more information, call 812-428-8200 or visit evpl.org. Central Library is located at 200 SE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

localtalent Brad Eble Photography

BRADE ABLE PHOTOGRAPHY

It has been a dream of Eble’s for many years to have a studio of his own. So at the tail end of 2012, he found the perfect space and jumped in with both feet. With help of his wife Aimee as well as his parents, the family spent four months gutting the space and building that he chose to create his new studio. Eble says, “One of my favorite parts of the 1200 square foot studio is the infinity wall my father and I built. I believe it may be the biggest in the area. We built it into a corner to allow a larger field to shoot. We offer custom framing in-house as well. This allows a one stop shopping experience or if someone has an old damaged frame we can re-purpose it for them too.”

P

hotographer Brad Eble of Brad Eble Photography & FrameWorks has been a professional photographer for 15 years. As long as he can remember, he has had an interest in creating images with a camera. During his 1991 deployment in the Middle East, he took a point and shoot camera and shot with film. He wasn’t satisfied with the images that he was receiving, though, so he started researching how he could create better photographs. In 1993, he started studying Visual Communications at Ivy Tech, and then in 2003, Eble returned to the Middle East with the National Guard. He was assigned the duty of Company UPAR (Unit Public Relations, Photographer), and he was allowed to photograph amazing places that most Americans will never see. Eble Photography services many areas from seniors, to family, babies, maternity and commercial photography. Eble is also an avid motorcycle enthusiast, so that is what he likes to shoot the most. He also enjoys creating fine art, black and white images. Eble shares, “I enjoy the creative process, the ability to control the final image from start to finish. When I see something I want to photograph, or a task that needs to be completed, it becomes a process of how can I do it better, how can I take better photographs and so on. The learning process never stops.”

Eble goes on to share, “I do not much care for doing the same thing over and over again. I like to challenge myself every day. I like to be given a puzzle that I have to figure out. I like to build my sets and props if I can.” He is very proud of his office and studio. They offer a large showroom for frame and mat selection as well as a beautiful and spacious dressing room with every amenity you could want to get ready for a photo shoot. the Blind MC

I

t’s extremely difficult to succeed in the music industry these days. Even if you are incredibly talented, the odds of getting noticed and actually forging a career are astronomical. Now imagine trying to navigate this challenging scenario without sight, and you might get a sense of what local artist Nova the Blind MC is up against. Thankfully, he’s not going it alone. The 24 year old performer’s tireless work ethic and positive outlook caught the attention of SLmedia One, a top-notch Evansville-based management team headed by David Hildreth and John Rankin. Veterans of the hip-hop scene both here, and in hotbeds like Atlanta - where Hildreth worked alongside legends Scarface and Too Short - the two have a clear plan for developing Nova into a star – and ultimately a brand. Born in Maryland, Nova lived most of his childhood in Virginia and eventually got serious about music at age 18. “Initially, I was free-styling, but then someone sat me down and convinced me that it just wasn’t clean or professional,” he says. “I needed to start writing my lyrics.” With a new focus and ever-determined, Nova entered an MC competition – his first actual live performance – and placed second out of 100. The next step was to test the waters in a new scene. Nova arrived in Evansville a year ago and quickly came under SLmedia One’s radar. Hildreth recalls the first time he heard the Blind MC: “I had moved back to the area from Atlanta and was out trying to acquaint myself with the local

hip-hop scene again after being gone for eight years. John and I met Nova and his brother at C.K. Newsome in the recording studio. It was clear that Nova was seriously talented, so we started to build a relationship with him.” But it wasn’t just Nova’s talent that impressed Rankin. “Rapping is a challenge. And for him to have the strength that he has to continue on without sight is really amazing. We’re at the beginning stages, but he’s going to be a remarkable artist.” An artist, according to Nova, is exactly what he intends to be. “There’s a difference between an artist and a rapper,” he explains. “An artist takes pride in the backing tracks he picks – he actually molds and creates. Rappers just jump on what’s hot, always looking for a quick dollar.” SLmedia One’s plan for Nova is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Hildreth and Rankin are methodically laying out Nova’s musical career which begins with Jukebox 1.0, a mix-tape that serves as a calling card for the MC’s lyrical skills. Over the course of 15 tracks, Nova covers all manner of subjects with a flow akin to Wiz Khalifa but still quite unique. Next up is a single called “Friday” with a Will Smith “Miami” sound that has been remixed by a legendary producer from former superstar R&B band The Deal. Then, SLmedia hopes to capitalize on the single’s (potential) success with the release of Nova’s debut album, Music and Money. Despite the seemingly cynical title, Hildreth is looking at the bigger picture. “If we get a chance to impact the Billboard charts with either the single or the album, Nova would be the first blind rapper ever to chart – he would make history.” Nova too, is more concerned with making a more personal impact. “I feel like I’m the voice for anyone who has lost something – not just sight. I’m showing them that it’s possible to meet the challenge and move forward in a positive way.” —Thomas Ellis Nova was recently interviewed on Local 7’s “Lifestyles with Laura” show. their bikes more than life itself.

t’s funny but also spot-on. According to Deanna Rhoades, co-owner of Newburgh bike shop Pinup Baggers, the motorcycle industry truly is a tight-knit community full of very passionate people. “It’s a wonderful business to get into,” she says. You’ll meet the most honest, caring folks who are willing to help you at the drop of a hat. It’s both a brotherhood and a sisterhood.” Deanna and her husband Mark started Pinup Baggers last September after nearly being done in by the stress of the trucking business they ran for years. With their kids grown, it made sense to switch gears. ”We’ve both been riding Harleys for 20 years or more, and Mark has always worked on bikes, so we decided to do something that we love and enjoy,” explains Deanna. Pinup Baggers specializes in motorcycle customization – everything from exhaust sets to a full custom bike build - and serves as a dealer for after-market Harley parts (big brands like RC Components, Aiken, Vance and Hines and Bad Dad). They also install after-market stereos, complete systems with video players and sub-woofers that can be heard for miles. But that’s not all. In addition, they carry apparel and even buy and sell bikes. The one thing they don’t do is mechanical or engine work (or paint jobs). One of the biggest trends right now in customization is modifying the front wheel to an oversized 26 inch frame, an expensive process that requires precision cutting and welding. Pinup Baggers is the only bike shop in the tri-state that handles this modification. It’s just one of many cosmetic changes that riders are making to their bikes these days. “You won’t find one out of 10 people that buy a factory bike,” says Mark. “That’s part of being a bike owner – you want it to be your own artwork, your own style.” Speaking of style, the Rhoades’ 22 year old son

Drew just recently won the Editor’s Choice Award at Daytona Bike Week. His supremely customized motorcycle will be featured in the August issue of Urban Bagger magazine, a full six page spread. Mark and Deanna plan to celebrate the one year anniversary of Pinup Baggers with a rocking party the weekend of September 23rd and 24th. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s will provide a beer garden and delicious food; live music will be scheduled, too, along with a pin-up girl contest. These are tough times for some businesses, but Pinup Baggers is on the way up. ”I’m very excited about the next year,” says Mark. “Harley has new product coming out, and the industry is moving forward. Say what you want about the economy, but if a bike owner wants something done, he’ll find the money for it.” Look for members of the Rhoades family at the big weekend motorcycle rallies around the area where they set up shop and sell parts and apparel. And be sure to visit Pinup Baggers at 5033 New York in Newburgh, 812-490-6240.

Ratings are given from 1-5. 5 is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. 1 is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

This is a German Wheat Beer (think Blue Moon) also called Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Hell. Poured into an English pint glass it produced at least an inch of thick creamy foam. It has a cloudy, golden, tannish color and is very aromatic. I sense wheat, yeast, banana (really) and maybe a little citrus there, too. Its taste presents a pronounced spiciness with a light, crisp wheat base. Faint notes of orange and lemon with a mild, earthy bitterness. I’m not always that crazy about wheat beers but this one is excellent in my opinion. I like it! Yes, I’d order another.

Paul Bragin • 4.5

Another hazy, golden yellow beer, this wheat beer has a somewhat thicker white head that takes a few seconds to disappear after pouring it in a glass. A faint fruit aroma hits the nose upon smelling it. Another excellent choice for drinking during the hot summer months, the crisp taste might pair well with salads and other simple dishes. This beer is sure to please wheat beer lovers. It might also convert someone who is new to wheat beer.

Nick D • 3

This Deutsch choice boasts a murky beige or light brown hue. A yeasty sweetness in the aroma teamed with a touch of citrus piques the nostrils. The first pull mirrors the smell of it but then after more and more sips the flavor dies out. All that remains is an invigorating sensation/texture on the back of the tongue and an omnipresent vague sweetness. For a German beer this feels really stripped down and weak but it is very effervescent. This one could make for a good summer beer.

Anchor Steam California Lager

Franziskaner Weissbier

Daniel Knight • 4

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 5 Liquor Locker locations.

Daniel Knight • 3.5

Anchor Brewing Company calls this an “American Pale Lager.” It’s 4.8% ABV. Relatively low, but normal for this type of brew. First off, I have to admit that a lager is not my usual choice of brews. With that said, I enjoyed this one. I poured it into a traditional English pint glass. Carbonation is moderately high. As for taste, it has a nice bitter start with a slight toasted bread taste. Good, dry mouth-feel, refreshing and satisfying. Particularly suited for warmer weather when you really need a nice, cool beer and with that low ABV it makes a good “session” beer. Would I order another? My guess is that a lager fan would.

Paul Bragin • 4.5

Like a traditional lager, this beer pours a transparent golden color with a noticeable white head and the standard scent of an American lager that beer drinkers expect. The similarities end there. This beer is a vast improvement over the American lager produced by the bigger brewers that dominate the American beer scene. Because the beer lacks fillers such as corn and rice that the larger brewers use, it maintains a refreshing flavor that is sure to please.

Nick D • 5

This beer boasts a striking amber hue with the slightest bit of cloudiness. The malt is clearly the star on the walk in the aroma of this brew but unlike most other lagers the smell is bolder and more confident. The first swig is a punch to the palate but it keeps form with the lager lightness and finishes smooth. As the pulls progress the texture only gets smoother and a slight flowery tone emerges. This beer is easydrinking and interesting. Bravo Anchor Steam!

Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale

Daniel Knight • 4.5

This is an American Pale Ale (APA) from a micro brewery in New Hampshire. Its 5.6% ABV is pretty normal for this variety of brew that’s styled after a classic English beer. Poured into an English pint glass it reveals a rich, slightly hazy (it’s unfiltered) copper color and rich, light beige head. The aroma is a nice balance of malts and hops, with some sweet fruity notes as well as a nice breadiness. Personally, I feel that any truly great beer (especially ales) tastes as good warm as at 50 degrees or so. Shoals Pale Ale passes the test. This is a very easy drinking pale ale that seems to fit much more into the English style than American. I’d order another.

Paul Bragin • 4

This pale ale with a deep amber color and lingering white head looks inviting as bubbles rise to the top of the glass. A strong and pleasant hop aroma immediately hits the nose. The hop flavor of the beer stays in the mouth long after the beer is swallowed. This is a great beer for summer cookouts with hamburgers and hot dogs with a lot of toppings.

Nick D • 4

This brew pours a mellow caramel hue, uncommon for a pale ale. The aroma is just as soothing with the hops smoothed out and subtle and a slight smokiness bringing warmth and soul. There is a velvety texture in the first pull that carries on the sense of comfort but the bitterness of the hops butts in over the top. Fortunately the bitterness spikes, then vanishes cleanly leaving an ever so slight aftertaste on the top of the palate. This is one of the more refined interesting pale ales I have experienced.

Redhook Wise Cracker Wit

Daniel Knight •3

Brewed by Redhook Ale Brewery in Portsmouth, NH, with a 5.3% ABV. Poured into an English pint glass it displays a hazy, medium golden beige with a foamy, quarter-inch head that immediately dissipates into a ring of white foam. Some sediment on the bottom. Smells light, citrusy and plain. No hops there. They call this a Belgian-style wheat ale with an addition of fresh ginger, but it is so subtle I didn’t pick up on the spice initially. The taste is wheaty up front, but then thins out a little too much. The finish is bland and too sweet for me. After drinking it longer, I did sense some nice spice in there, but I still wish there were something more. I can’t say I didn’t like it but I’d order something more exciting for the second round.

Paul Bragin • 4

This wheat beer pours a hazy, golden yellow in the glass with a thin white head. The first sniff gives up a slightly fruity scent. The wheat is offset by a faint taste of ginger on the palette. This refreshing beer goes well with lighter summer dishes and probably also works with slightly spicy foods. This would be an excellent beer to have on hand for outdoor activities like grilling, picnics and working outside.

Nick D • 2

As with most other wheat beers this one pours a cloudy yellow/brown, bleh. However, the first whiff and I’m intrigued. A savory spice fills the nostrils and a feeling of familiarity is inspired. It is a calming and comfortable but unexpected odor. No sweet note of any kind so far. The taste almost precisely mirrors the smell and at this point I’m scratching my head. This is a wheat beer? The texture is very accessible but the flavor is reminiscent of a broth. It is not until the sixth or seventh drink that a sweetness came through. This one doesn’t make sense.

Cigar Review: A Great Bourbon

W

hat cigar should be smoked with a great bourbon? At the Liquor Locker, we have a wide selection of cigars which range from mild to full-flavored, and the wonderful beverages to go with them. A very strong cigar like the Cacho Triple Maduro or Cohiba Extra Vigorosa (XV Series) will stand its ground with any whiskey drank neat or on the rocks. Including the new Barrel Strength Four Roses, which could be as high as 115 proof depending on the barrel. For those who like to experiment, this is a good way to relieve the tension of the day while thinking noble thoughts and dreaming of the future. It is also a lot of fun to have these parings with close friends!

Book

Review

From Ankle Deep: Surviving Child Sexual Abuse By Scott Thomas Sieg

By Oliver Mason

D

ue to constant job changes in his family, Author Scott Thomas Sieg lived most of his life as a suburban nomad, moving from medium-sized town to medium-sized town in the Midwest. This book is a biographical account of the ups and downs in his life which begin with one malicious, saddening and sickening event. By the title you may be able to discern what that is, but if not, it begins with Sieg’s experience as an individual dealing with CSA (Child Sexual Abuse). To me, this narrative is him using a foot-long chalkboard eraser clearing away all the hap-hazard scribbling and jottings of addiction and self-loathing that were cluttering his life, preventing him from becoming the person he wanted to be. What I like about Sieg’s account is that his narrative is written as if he is sitting down with you at a café or a bar telling you about his life. It is powerful and wildly bi-polar. I found it very intriguing that Sieg could have experienced something so dark and heavy and yet excel in social situations (as catharsis). He talks about the side of him that makes all of these friends (mostly female) throughout his life when I recall my own experience with females in grade school and early high school to be simply light

80 | August 2013

conversation, ultra-shyness and admiration from a distance. Although, when Sieg talks about all of these friends (from school and work) and later, all of the wild college parties he was a major part of there is a noticeable lack of detail. The reader finds themselves wanting a true introduction to some of these characters, not just a one sentence physical description and a one word summation of their personality. In any case, it seems the true purpose of the book is a personal spiritual and mental healing, as well as spreading the word about CSA and helping others who have experienced it. By reading this book, you recognize Sieg as a very brave individual, also a very helpful one, devoting the last 17 pages of the book to a Self-Help Guide to CSA Survivors and forming his foundation Shades 4 U to help the fight against CSA. —Oliver Mason Sieg will be at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Evansville at 624 South Green River Road on August 10 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for a book signing. The book is available to order online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and AuthorHouse Bookstore.

Guests are invited to dress in prom attire – from any era – and join the event’s emcee and Trustee Andrew Wilson for this great end-of-summer celebration, featuring a fun evening of dinner, music and dancing to the exceptional tunes of Nashville’s popular group, Top Tier. Ticket prices are $100 per person for people graduating in 1996 or earlier, and $75 per person for anyone graduating after 1996. Prepaid tables of eight are available for $1,000, and guests can name their table. Proceeds from this special event are a key way the Museum is able to reach their annual operating fund goal. Trucks

4 Kids By Lauren VanCleve

It started as an idea. Chris Buck knew he wanted to use his passion as a means to help area children.

“I

love trucks. Most of my best memories growing up involve a truck. Driving on my dad’s lap or watching and learning about them while we worked on them. Good stuff like that will never leave me,” said Buck. That’s when he decided to host Trucks 4 Kids, a local truck show to benefit Riley Children’s Hospital. Buck has pledged that 75% of the proceeds from the event will go directly to Riley. Trucks 4 Kids will be held August 2-4 at the Gibson County Fairgrounds and will host a ton of family fun. There will be rides, interactive displays, food and fun. On Friday, August 2, Trucks 4 Kids will open at 11 a.m. with a mud drag beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, it will open at 10 a.m. with a truck pull at 6 p.m. Saturday night there will be a show ‘n shine judging and two awards ceremonies, followed by a church service and introductions on Sunday. Driveline Plus was the show’s first major sponsor, with Cummins Racing Engines, Trent McEllhiney Heating Cooling and Electrical and Brian Sullivan at Sully’s Garage jumping in right after. Since then, dozens of sponsors have shown their support for Trucks 4 Kids. “The backing for the show has been my biggest hurdle. The show has completely grown into more than I could have imagined. All thanks to the support of so many people,” said Buck. Tickets for Trucks 4 Kids are available through their Facebook page. They are $5 for a single-day pass and $10 for a weekend pass. Tickets may also be purchased at the gate. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Buck at truckinforkids@ gmail.com. Buck will be looking for volunteers in the coming weeks to help run the event. For more information on the event, please visit www.facebook.com/trucks4kids.

August 9th Elysium

Sony Pictures Elysium is an old, Greek word for a place or condition of ideal happiness. In the year 2154, things are very similar to what they are here in 2013; the elite rich people live detached, privileged lives while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet. The only difference is that in 2154, the privileged have moved their base of operations from Beverly Hills and Manhattan to a private space station that orbits Earth. The space station and Earth are separated not only by an atmosphere, but by a Department of Defense who stops at nothing to protect its elite citizens. Its leader, Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster), has access to a global police force made up of robots who submit to every order without question or compromise. Enter our hero, Max DeCosta (Matt Damon), a rehabilitated ex-con who is finally trying to get his life in order. After learning he has cancer and a few days to live, he needs access to a healing machine, reserved only for the elite on Elysium. He equips an exo-skeleton armor suit, and an unexpected added passenger, and begins his journey to Elysium to save not only himself, but Earth’s population as well. Writer/director Neill Blomkamp, who brought us the amazing District 9 film, makes this potentially bland plot a promising one. On the surface, District 9 sounded like it was doomed to unoriginality, but ended up as one of the best sci-fi experiences of all time. Take us to Elysium, Neill – please.

August 16th Paranoia Gaumont Brooklyn-born tech guru Adam Cassidy (Liam Hemsworth) finally gets the big break he’s been waiting for when technology titan and billionaire, Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman), offers him a job working for Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford), Wyatt’s mentor. Goddard runs a competing billion dollar tech corporation called Eikon. The catch is, Wyatt asks Adam to commit corporate espionage by spying on his old mentor who is on the brink of a technology revolution worth billions. Adam is reluctant at first, but his ailing father needs his financial support and he quickly finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes battle between two of the world’s largest, and most dangerous organizations. Paranoia is based on a 2004 novel of the same name written by Joseph Finder. The screenplay is written by Jason Dean Hall (Spread) and Barry Levy (Vantage Point). Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde) directed and shot the film primarily in Philadelphia. Josh Holloway from TV’s Lost plays FBI Agent Billups and Amber Heard plays Emma, Adam’s romantic interest. According to reviewers, the book is riddled with the “f” bomb and a lot of technical jargon from 2004. Apparently the author spent time at Cisco Systems, where he fueled his research for the novel. There is something to the corporate espionage plot. The United States supposedly loses billions of dollars each year because of it. Maybe the film will provoke a revolutionary culture shift ahead of its time and increase awareness for a new, more secure way of life? More likely it will just create what its title suggests!

Admission Focus Features

Tina Fey plays Portia Nathan, a tightly-wound prude bucking for promotion in her sixteenth year as a Princeton University Admissions Officer. Paul Rudd plays John Pressman, a warm-hearted but loosetongued teacher at a small college in New Hampshire. John contacts Portia because he has a student prodigy named Jeremiah (Nat Wolff) and thinks he has an edge with Portia to get Jeremiah accepted into the illustrious PU. Portia has just been dumped by her long-time boyfriend, Mark (Michael Sheen), who has been treating her more like a loyal dog than a partner. It is also enrollment time at Princeton again, and that means 26,000 applicants are headed her way. Her boss, Clarence (Wallace Shawn), announces his retirement, which puts his title up for grabs between her and a competitive colleague, Corinne (Gloria Reuben). Her mother, Susannah (Lily Tomlin!), tells her that a few months earlier, she found out she had cancer and had both breasts removed just in case. After John introduces her to Jeremiah, and presents her with his birth certificate showing that he is the child she gave up for adoption, the uptight Portia begins to unwind a little bit – okay, completely. She and John struggle along until she finally bends the rules of admissions far enough to break them. At first, the film breezes into your brain with quick-witted dialogue, a refreshing vacation from the Hollywood norm. I found myself surprisingly entertained, and actually laughing out loud during the first two acts. Unfortunately, the story unravels in the last fifteen minutes with very poor choices by the filmmakers. My vote is DENY.

Boy

Transmission Boy’s mother died giving birth to his younger brother Rocky, both are now cared for by their grandmother. When she is called away to an out of town funeral, Boy is left behind to father his younger brother and three cousins. James Rolleston plays the under-aged and over-burdened Alamein Jr. (aka Boy), an 11 year old who struggles to find himself after his beloved jailbird father, Alamein Sr., returns home. The immature, unburdened Alamein Sr. is played by Academy Award nominee, Taika Waititi, who is also the film’s writer and director. Waihau Bay, New Zealand, 1984 is a beautiful coastal setting for a beautiful coming-of-age tale of a boy’s love for his father, despite his father’s shortcomings. The unique New Zealand slang puts you there immediately. Boy starts off innocently enough with adolescent crushes and school yard fights, then evolves dramatically and tastefully into drug abuse and bar fights. Director Taika Waititi is known for comedy, and there is an element of humor in almost every scene. Boy daydreams about his father being smooth like Michael Jackson. Rocky daydreams that he has super powers. Alamein Sr. can talk about almost nothing but the movie E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. He and his two gang members (more like wanna-be gang members) are digging up a field trying to find a money stash that he buried there before he was arrested. This plan fails, mainly because he can’t remember where he buried the money. The story answers whether or not Boy will find his own potential, or if he will follow in his father’s failed footsteps. —Ben Clark

LOCAL BAND SPOTLI G HT ABOUT THE BAND:

Retro Shock

Retro Shock is one of Southern Indiana’s premier, cover bands playing party-dance hits from the 60’s to the 80’s, focusing on classic rock and pop songs, as well as one-hit-wonders. Fronting the band are Mike Dawson (guitar and vocals) and Becky Dawson (keyboards, vocals and eye candy). The powerful rhythm section is provided by Neil Yockey (bass) and Chris Ellis (drums). With decades of combined musical experience, we know how to read a crowd, and we can rock with the best of them. We are known for the quality and control of our sound. WHAT THEY COVER/DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE:

We play favorite songs from many decades and different genres, so there is something for everyone at a Retro Shock performance. Each song, fast or slow, is danceable, and draws the crowd to the dance floor. You are sure to hear someone say, “I haven’t heard that song in forever!” THEIR INFLUENCES:

We choose songs that are well-known to most people, but are not overplayed by every other local band. We look for songs that are upbeat, danceable and create an emotional connection to your past. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES:

French Lick Casino, Roca Bar North, KC’s Timeout, Cricket’s, Hacienda First Avenue, Backstage Bar and many other tri-state bars. We have also performed at the 2013 Warrick County Fair, several bike rallies and benefits, private and corporate events, reunions and car shows. The Sun Comes Out Tonight Wind-up Records 3/5

Filter is back after a three year hiatus with an album that sounds remarkably similar to the band’s earliest and most popular work in the mid to late 90’s. Both the pseudo-industrial edge of “Hey Man, Nice Shot” and the melodic simplicity of “Take a Picture” are in evidence. Indeed, The Sun Comes Out Tonight moves back and forth between the styles of these two disparate tracks - only the subtle electronic elements in the mix distinguish this release from the band’s heyday. Singer Richard Patrick’s nasal scream is in full effect on the lead single, “What Do You Say.” It’s just one of many tracks that follow the Filter songwriting blueprint – slow, economical verses that build to guitar-thrashing choruses with a nod to Nine Inch Nails. But Trent has never waded into such poppy waters as songs like “Surprise,” “First You Break It” or “It’s Just You.” Maybe that’s why the mainstream side of Filter is more believable. Sure, “SelfInflicted” and “Burn It” are credible throwbacks to the Pretty Hate Machine era, but Patrick simply sounds more convincing when he actually sings. Few heavy bands can pull off a legitimate ballad, but Filter does it with ease time and again.

The Smoking Flowers 2 Guns City Hall/Bandaloop Records 4/5

In the great tradition of musician couples like June and Johnny Cash, Kim and Scott Collins - a.k.a. Nashville’s The Smoking Flowers – possess an artistic synergy that can only come from a deep emotional attachment. Married 14 years, the two have put it all together on their latest release, 2 Guns. The alt-country collection of songs is underscored by a punk attitude that indeed recalls the man in black and his bride. “Spark and Fire” makes for a great introduction to the album with the couple trading off vocals before joining together for the chorus. Kim’s velvety tone perfectly complements Scott’s grittier delivery as the two sing what must be personal lyrics: ‘Don’t look at me if you can’t see me forever young.’ No less raw, the plaintive, acoustic “Something I Said” is a vocal tour de force for Kim. Her remarkable performance brings to mind Thom Yorke’s tension release on Radiohead’s “Creep,” and Scott’s guitar work is equally emotive. “White Flags” is pure rockabilly – lots of twang and nervous energy. The refrain of ‘we are stones’ comes across as a statement of solidarity made stronger by the doubling of voices. Likewise, the line ‘I’m your only friend’ in the “The Juggler” is a testament to Kim and Scott’s personal and musical bond.

True Widow

Circumambulation Relapse Records 4.5/5

They say everything is bigger in Texas, but Dallas-based stone-gaze trio True Widow is making a career out of being slower. Circumambulation, the band’s third album, contains eight long, droning tracks that literally creep from beginning to end. In fact, “Creeper” leads things off with a 20 second fade-in before settling into a death march complete with sparse, reverb-heavy vocals from DH Phillips. The effect is quite chilling - even more so when the band allows the music to fade away, leaving a gaping hole in the mix before resuming the distortion-drenched guitar pattern. The repetition is maddening, but it’s a welcome sort of lunacy. “Trollstigen” is a particular highlight, floating in like an iceberg, its movement almost imperceptible. Thirty seconds of random, discomforting noise gives rise to a primitive yet incredibly powerful two note riff backed by the pounding drums of Slim TX. Over this gothic soundscape, True Widow’s secret weapon emerges: the disembodied vocals of bassist Nicole Estill. Her presence is immediately felt, and the track attains a heaviness that most bands mistakenly try to achieve with a barrage of sound. That’s the beauty of True Widow – Circumambulation does so much with so little at a virtual standstill. The whole album plays like one drawn-out, disquieting moment that never leaves you.

The Winery Dogs The Winery Dogs Loud & Proud Records 3.5/5

Sweet Felony

Split Ends Mend

Self-Released

There’s no monotony to be had on Sweet Felony’s Split Ends Meet. The songs throw out a twangy, rockabilly sound from beginning to end. At first listen, you can tell the female duo has an extensive background in music. The ladies have been in bands that range from swing to punk and rock to experimental. Tracks like “Surrender” and “Dream” pack a soulful punch and fans of Pistol Annie’s and Miranda Lambert will be able to rock along with ease.

BoySetsFire

While a Nation Sleeps

Bridge Nine Records

While a Nation Sleeps by BoySetsFire leaves much to be desired. The album can’t seem to find a consistent theme, jumping from one overall feel to the next, specifically with the vocals. This makes it very hard to listen to in one sitting. On a positive note, the band is tight and rocks a great post-hardcore sound instrumentally. BoySetsFire recently joined up with hard-core label Bridge Nine records to release this album, their first in almost seven years.

Wolves Like Us

A power-trio made up of rock veterans who have hit the heights with such legendary bands as Mr. Big, Poison and Dream Theater, Winery Dogs are primed to do the same with this straight-up, rocking self-titled debut. It’s the sound of three highly talented musicians taking the best elements from some of the biggest acts to create a singular work. Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy click as if they’ve been playing together for years. Kotzen’s vocal delivery is commanding and confident, coming across like a bluesy Chris Cornell with a dash of Sammy Hagar on opening track “Elevate.” The guitars shred throughout, recalling Lenny Kravitz and Black Crowes. Not to be outdone, Sheehan’s bass work is simply ridiculous. But beyond the sterling musicianship, these guys know their way around a hook. Tracks like “The Other Side,” “I’m No Angel” and “Six Feet Deeper” not only rock, they get stuck in your head. Ok, so the lyrics are typical fare detailing the usual relationship difficulties, and at times, the music maybe draws a bit too much from the members’ influences and former bands. But you’ll gladly ignore these shortcomings when penultimate track “Time Machine” leaves your ears ringing.

Get Gone

Prosthetic Records

Wolves Like Us delivers a hard-hitting, dark rock album with Get Gone. The band features ex-members of some major Norwegian bands such as Amulet, Infidels Forever and Silver. This vinyl, ten-inch single features two tracks, “Get Gone” on side A and “Too Official” on side B. The album has a sludgy rock sound, with both tracks delivering satisfying vocals and talent all around. Without a doubt, fans of the Deftones should check this record out.

etween this new establishment and the wonderfully scenic OV Watersports Tiki Bar & Grill, it’s like an island of entertainment where you’re happy to be deserted. Importantly, Marina Pointe is also home to the USS LST 325, a key piece of this city’s rich history. With summer in full swing, it’s time to revisit this unique stretch of attractions lining the Ohio River. Beertropolis: This is a bar with serious buzz – and a WWII memorial right next door. It’s no secret that Evansville loves its country music, and Owner Blake Fulton plans to bring in some high-profile acts over the next few months. Eventually, he hopes to expand the business to include catering and a family-style restaurant. Word has it that the name came from a song called “Beertropolis” written specifically for the bar by Nashville musician Tim Ash who is an Evansville native. Location: 830 LST Drive.

An amphibious vessel designed to land battle-ready tanks, troops and supplies directly onto enemy shores, the LST 325 also saw action in the Korean and Vietnam wars. This particular vessel was commissioned in 1943 and just about sailed the world before being returned to Evansville where so many LST ships were produced.
