Finally, bring a spring upon her cable westerly to ye home port of Evansville to the Victory Theatre for a local lad by the name of Phillip Lawrence who jotted many a tune with a strapping young lad all the lasses fall for, Bruno Mars. Also, the seasoned Jack Tar and finger-style guitar player Tommy Emmanuel, hailing from the shores of Australia, sails into port!

Philip Lawrence Live at

the Victory Theatre By Thomas Ellis

T

he Memorial High School graduate may not be immediately recognizable in name, yet he is responsible for co-writing – along with musical partner Bruno Mars – some of the biggest hits of the last four years starting with Flo Rida’s “Right Round” in 2009. Since then, Lawrence has helped Mars become a global superstar, chalking up number one hits like “Grenade,” “Just the Way You Are” and “Locked Out of Heaven.” He returns to Evansville September 14 at the Victory Theatre in support of his new solo album Letters I Never Sent.

Lawrence spoke with News4U while on tour with Bruno Mars. News4U (N4U): You’ve been out in Los Angeles for years. When was the last time you performed in your hometown of Evansville? Philip Lawrence (PL): That’s a great question. It’s probably been since high school, so it’s going to be like a big homecoming. I’ve been away so long that most people probably won’t have a clue who I am (laughs)! N4U: After writing and performing with Bruno Mars, is it daunting to strike out on your own with Letters I Never Sent? PL: The album is mainly a cathartic release for me, allowing my voice to be heard again. I actually recorded about 95% of the material in 2009 when Bruno was about to take off. The title comes from the fact that these are songs that were almost never heard – letters to friends and family, in effect. N4U: You’ve had incredible success as a songwriter. What were the early years like before hitting the top of the charts? PL: It’s been a strange journey, indeed. I basically flunked out of college – had no interest in it whatsoever. But my parents were fully supportive of my dream to be an entertainer, especially since almost everyone in my family sings. After college, I followed my brother down to Florida where he was going to study to be a recording engineer and ended up getting a job performing at Disney World. That lasted from 1995 to 2001.

Evansville has produced a number of successful entertainers throughout the years, but few have reached the heights of Philip Lawrence.

N4U: Did the experience prepare you for bigger things? PL: I really learned a lot about myself and came into my own as an artist. Soon after, I met some producers who encouraged me to write songs and through them, I started to do some work on Steven Seagal soundtracks and his debut album. He eventually moved us out to Los Angeles. That’s right: Steven Seagal’s money helped me move to LA (laughs)! That’s a true story. N4U: What was your initial impression of Los Angeles? PL: For the first six months, I was living in a beautiful penthouse in Santa Monica, and I was thinking that this is how life’s going to be out here (laughs). But eventually, we stopped working with Steven Seagal and were making no money. Some tough years followed – I was totally broke and down on my luck. But just when I was about to give up, I got a call to come out to a producer’s studio to meet a young talent who needed a writing partner. It was Bruno Mars. When I saw how talented he was, I made a conscious decision to put my own artistic career on hold and help make him a star. From that day forward, we have worked together on everything.

The show starts at 7 p.m. with a performance by Lawrence’s brother and sister. Doors open at 6 p.m. Visit victorytheatre.com for more information.

Warrick County Humane Society’s 3rd Annual

Dogs & Suds

By Jessie Hellman

Those who are looking for fun and have a soft spot for animals should consider attending the Warrick County Humane Society’s 3rd annual Dogs and Suds event.

W

arrick Humane Society was incorporated in 1983 and opened its No Kill shelter on Vann Road in 1997. Their mission is to end the animal overpopulation crisis in the community, to find homes for homeless and neglected animals and to provide educational programs and community services for the mutual benefit of animals and people. The event, which takes place from 2 to 10 p.m. Oct. 5 at Newburgh Old Lock & Dam, is the humane society’s largest fundraiser every year and helps it remain a no-kill shelter, said the society’s Executive Director Lindsey Byers. “It’s important because we don’t receive any funding from the government,” Byers said. “All the funding we raise at this event goes to help the animals.” The event includes kids games, a 5k run/walk, food, pet parade, pet pictures, live music and vendors, she said. Admission is free, but there is a $2 cover charge to see the bands and enter the beer garden.

10 | September 2013

“People can also take advantage of the low-cost rabies vaccination and microchip clinic that will be available from 2 to 4 p.m.,” Beyers said. “The more people we get at the fundraiser, the more successful it will be. The more people; the more fun for everybody.” “The Warrick County Humane Society is one of the few no-kill animal shelters in the area. People should come out just to help support their local humane society and no-kill shelter,” she said.

A combination or lingerie, dark humor and musical numbers, The Rocky Horror Picture Show attracts a unique and versatile audience.

T

he show made its debut in 1973 and went on to become a motion picture in 1975. At the time, midnight showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show became increasingly popular and before long, the film had collected a cult following. These midnight showings allowed viewers to dress up, often in little more than underwear and fishnets. Many of the costumes crossed gender lines due to the gender bending theme present in the show, best represented by Dr. Frank

N’ Furter, a main character in the show who identifies as a transvestite. The film follows Brad and Janet, a newlywed couple, as they stumble upon Dr. Frank N’ Furter’s home inhabited by himself and his two servants, siblings Rif Raf and Magenta; all of whom are aliens from the Planet Transylvania. The house also holds Columbia: a Dr. Frank N’ Furter fan girl and Eddie: whose brain is split to provide life for Rocky, Dr.Frankenfurter’s creation.

At 11 p.m. on September 21, The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be screened at The Centre located on 715 Locust St. The venue will offer “survival kits” which include a prop bag containing rice, newspaper, water pistols, rubber gloves, confetti, toilet paper, toast and playing cards. Each of these items is used at a specific time during the film so instructions will be provided for first timers detailing when and how to use the items. Patrons are encouraged to dress up because there will be a costume contest including the categories the “Fishnet King and Queen,” “We Ain’t in Kansas Anymore,” “Hottest Thing Since Fire” and “Most Likely To Be Mistaken For a Transvestite.”

Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door or $10 with prop bag. Tickets can be charged by phone by calling 800-745-3000 or on the Internet at Ticketmaster.com. All tickets are subject to Ticketmaster Fees, Handling Charges and Facility Fees.

Guitar Guru: An Interview with

W

By Nick Durcholz

hen most 4-year-old boys were pushing around toy tractors or hitting surfaces with a toy hammer, little Tommy Emmanuel had a guitar. The well-traveled Australian will be performing at the Victory Theatre in downtown Evansville on September 20. Emmanuel employs a ‘fingerstyle’ technique on guitar stretching its sound profile. In his hands the acoustic guitar acts the part of lead, rhythm, bass and drums. It is an intense style that can be furiously fast and supremely serene.

While touring in England, Emmanuel took time out of his schedule to chat with News4U.

News4U (N4U): You received your first guitar when you were four, but when did you feel that you really grew into it and truly appreciated it? Tommy Emmanuel (TE): I discovered when I was in my teens that if I practiced hard then I could really improve. It was one of those moments that changed my life and it was purely because I put in the effort to learn something that inspired me so much. When I worked at it and worked out how to play it, it was such a sense of “Oh! okay…” It was an awakening. It was like, ‘If you get to work, you can really do something with this.’ N4U: You have played with so many talented people. Is there a special collaboration that comes to mind at the present moment? TE: I just did some dates with the great Stochelo Rosenberg, a gypsy-jazz player. I love playing with Stochelo. It’s like an education every time. N4U: I’m sure out of all the individuals you’ve played with; everyone always asks you what performing with Eric Clapton was like… TE: He’s amazing. What a wonderful person he is, a very generous soul. I really enjoyed working with him. Chet Atkins was also one of the best people that I’ve ever known, and did so much for me just by being in my life. N4U: In creating the new album with Martin Taylor, The Colonel & the Governor, what about the experience was different from your other albums? TE: Firstly, it was a collaboration with one guy who has a totally different style, and that was fun and challenging. It was a joy to make. I hope it’s the first of many. It was recorded in a few days and everything went down as if we were playing onstage. It’s almost like a live recording. We’ve got our fingers crossed for some Grammy nominations with the album, so it’s all exciting for me and working with Martin Taylor has been wonderful. N4U: What did you learn as a musician and performer when you were with the rock band Dragon? TE: The thing that I learned the most was how important it was that the songs were all strong, and you didn’t try to get too clever. You played music that everybody could get a hold of. Also, that you could tell a story, you could really say something and take people on a journey, just with the music. That was an important part of my life.

Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including victorytheatre.com, the Victory Theatre Box Office (day of event only) and the Ford Center Ticket Office. The show begins at 8 p.m. PHOTO CREDIT TOMMY EMMANUAL/ PROMOTERS-MEDIA/GALLERY 12 | September 2013 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Henderson County Colonels

The Colonel’s are back for the 2013 season and ready to take command of the green and white-striped battlefield that is the gridiron.

H

ead Coach Tony Lewis, formerly of the Evansville F.J. Reitz Pathers was made general of the Colonels in 2013. This is a smart move on Henderson County High School’s part considering Coach Lewis’ coaching experience and his W-L record with Reitz at an outstanding 53-11. As far as the Colonel’s offense goes, Coach Lewis said, “Cole Roberts (right guard) is one of our senior captains and does a great job of communicating the calls to his fellow linemen. We want a lot of players to touch the ball offensively so that the defense can’t zero in on one player.” On the defensive side, “We want our best players to play defense and in doing so, we want to get the offenses we face in uncomfortable situations in terms of down and distance. We want to gang tackle and be aggressive in our philosophy. Alex Greubel and

Mason Galloway are both senior captains who play linebacker. Both players will be expected to provide leadership throughout the year,” said Lewis. “The Henderson County Football Program looks forward to an exciting year. We have a tough schedule that hopefully will prepare us come playoff time. We want to improve on a weekly basis and be playing our best football come playoff time,” said Lewis.

Central Bears The Central Bears have come out of their hibernation to the 2013 season and they are hungry to meet their competitors.

Coach Owen was quoted in the 2013 Indiana Football Digest as saying, “We have another group of seniors that enjoy football. They have an understanding of the commitment it takes to be successful. They are a hardworking, close knit group with good chemistry and great character. They should be great leaders. Our juniors are more athletic with playmaking abilities. They are very committed. Our sophomores have been very successful and are working hard in the weight room and we also have a very good group of freshmen.”

he six-year den leader, Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Andy Owen remains more than steadfast for the Bears with a W-L record of 41-26. In 2012, he finished 6-4. At his side is Defensive Coordinator Ron Kane. The Bear’s offense holds no jabs using multiple offensive schemes keeping their enemies guessing. Five starters will be returning of the offensive side including senior quarterback Austin Fuchs and senior running back Avion Sullivan who rushed for 867 yards last year. On the defensive side, the Bears are just as unpredictable using multiple defensive schemes to protect their territory. The defense only has two returning starters: Sullivan as defensive back and junior Ben Williams also as defensive back. Last year, the Bear’s defense averaged a loss of 143 rushing yards and 150 passing yards per game.

NORTH HUSKIES After their first year with their own football stadium, the Huskies have a new sense of pack pride and they are ready to dominate.

“Coaching North football is both an incredible challenge and an exciting opportunity. I am grateful to have been chosen to lead such an outstanding group of young men, and to represent such a terrific school and community. We are a very young and inexperienced team that will certainly get better as the season progresses. There is an air of excitement and enthusiasm on the northside of Evansville right now regarding football, and I am thrilled to be a part of it,” said Szabo.

He comes with 10 years of varsity head coach experience and has a career W-L record of 62-44. To his right, head to the wind is his Offensive Coordinator, Tim Millikan. The Huskies boast multiple offensive schemes and hold their ground using at 4-4 defensive scheme. Some returning starters include quarterback Jesse Millikan and kicker Zach Turi. They may not be the most experienced team, but according to Coach Szabo they continue to improve themselves physically.

The Bulldogs use multiple offensive schemes to keep their enemies on their toes and this year they boast six returning offensive starters. These starters include top returning passer Ian Nunley and top returning rusher, Best of the Midwest Carrington Crutcher with a total of 1,534 yards under his collar. All said, the Bulldogs averaged 172.1 rushing yards per game in 2012 and 71.4 passing yards. To protect their turf, the Bulldogs utilize a 3-3-5 defensive scheme and are bringing nine returning defensive starters to the table. These starters include senior linebackers Aaron Boone and DeAngelo Crenshaw as well as senior defensive back Bo Burkhart.

The Bosse Bulldogs are squared-up and ready for brawlin’ on the gridiron in the new season.

Despite his first year record, Head Coach Thomas’ spirit is still very strong. When asked what Bosse football means to him, he responded: “Bosse Football to me is life. It’s not just football it’s Bosse High School. We live, breath and eat red and grey. Everything else is just secondary.”

Creed Bratton Victory Theatre Live at the By Thomas Ellis

After nine ground-breaking seasons, NBC’s flagship sitcom “The Office” said goodbye last May with a sentimental finale that neatly tied up all loose ends.

W

hile the episode featured the triumphant return of former boss Michael Scott, it was the criminally underused, wonderfully off-the-wall character Creed Bratton who provided the most poignant moment. His on-camera performance of the real-life Creed Bratton’s original composition “All the Faces” provided a moving soundtrack to the end of a beloved show. For many viewers, Bratton’s musicianship may have come as a surprise. But, in fact, he started his entertainment career as a member of The Grass Roots back in the late 60’s. The group scored numerous hits including “Live for Today” and maintains a strong following decades later. Currently on tour to promote his ambitious new solo release, Tell Me About It, Bratton will perform at the Victory Theatre on September 21st. He kindly spoke with News4U about his resurgent music career.

News4U (N4U): Some of the songs on your new release

N4U: Your performance of “All the Faces” on The Office finale

N4U: The track “Unemployment Line” on your new album has a particularly timely message. CB: I think that song is a real sleeper, a little bit of a downer - but I hope people get a chance to hear it. I wrote it 40 years ago when I was out of work and had actually been standing in an unemployment line waiting to get my check. I thought I saw an old girlfriend walk by, and I was filled with shame – felt like I had totally failed. I had gone from the pop star experience with The Grass Roots to serving people in a catering line. I’ve had some real ups and downs, there’s no doubt about it.

N4U: With your live performances, how do you bridge the gap

date back many, many years. Why has it taken so long for the material to see the light of day? Creed Bratton (CB): I just figured that no one was going to give me a shot with my music or take me seriously because of my age and my work as a comedic actor. My biggest fear was that people wouldn’t realize that I’ve been doing this for 50 years. I recorded demos over the years and put them up on cdbaby.com but never made any money, of course. But I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to make albums now. It’s a true labor of love.

really stole the show, so to speak. Did you expect it to receive such a strong reaction? CB: After we shot the scene, Greg Daniels (creator of The Office) watched it back and said to me, “you really knocked it out of the park with that one.” That song came to me fully formed – the lyrics, the finger-picking and the melody. I often try to overintellectualize my songs after the initial idea comes through, but the simplest arrangements work best because rock and roll is dumb (laughs). between Creed Bratton, “comedic actor” and Creed Bratton, “serious musician”? CB: My shows are like a storyteller session – I explain the history of The Grass Roots, etc. The laughs often come from the stories behind the songs – it’s like a troubadour kind of thing. So, you get a nice mix of comedy and music.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Bratton’s new album Tell Me About It is available on iTunes or can be purchased on vinyl at creedbratton.com.

He offered his guest bedroom to her without consulting me first.

Q Shawnda,

My boyfriend’s college sweetheart is coming to town. He offered his guest bedroom to her without consulting me first. This caused a HUGE fight. He swears they no longer have feelings for one another. I told him he is cheating and the invite was disrespectful. Should he have consulted me first? Is the invite cheating? —Stacey

Dave's Sportsden Pizza & Pub 701 N Weinbach Ave., Evansville, IN (812) 479-8887 I’ve known Dave for a long time (I don’t think he realizes it). Being from the restaurant and liquor biz, and spending many an evenings in his establishment, I’ve known what to expect. I began my birthday feast with Matt’s Cheese Fries. Plenty of melted, shredded, real, freakin’ cheeses sit on top of crispy French fries. We all love bacon, and these are no bits. Rather, large chunks of fresh crispy bacon. Oooooweeee! Next, the Italian beef. First a perfectly toasted hoagie, topped with garlic butter and Parmesan. Thinly-sliced, marinated strips of beef are melt in your mouth good and covered in plenty of mozzarella cheese. Dessert was pizza, like seriously, pizza?! A mini pepperoni with jalapeno, my favorite… This crispy, Una style pizza is lightly sauced and topped with fresh sliced mozzarella. The sauce is just slightly sweet, but they go thin. I think it’s a good fit for anyone, unless you like a ton of sauce. Daily food and drink specials are just one more reason the check out “the Den.”

Hi Stacey,

I can almost hear your “freak out” voice when reading this. I try to be as neutral as possible when answering relationship questions. If you’re not leaving anything out and this situation really went down…I would FREAK too. YES! He should have talked to you about it first. Having an ex hanging around is never a good idea (unless kids are involved). As much as you want to trust that nothing will happen…you will always think about it. You’ve told him how you feel. If he goes through with it and allows her to stay with him…KICK HIM TO THE CURB.

Xoxo :)

Eric's Corner Carryout 4220 Broadway Ave., Evansville, IN (812) 402-9788 Eric’s Corner Carryout is exactly that, a quaint little carryout joint, with a couple of tables to accommodate some fair weather dine-ins. Let me quickly say, this place was clean, nearly spotless, and to me that goes a long, long way. To the food we go. Starters were tomato soup and fresh cucumber salad. The soup had a very silky consistency and was complimented with a pinch of heat and sweet basil. The cucumber salad, which always has a place in my heart, is prepared with thinly-sliced cukes and red onion, resting in an abundance of vinegar, and seasoned with salt, pepper and sugar. This was a treat. Let’s move to the Tuna Salad. A mixture of tuna, mayo, bell peppers, celery, egg, pickle and red onion, nestled atop Panini-grilled slices of Italian white bread. The sandwich can be topped with a variety of veggies and dressings if you prefer, a great hot day lunch. All and all, a nice experience, with nice people, perfect if you’re looking for some quick corner carryout.

stand around and wait to be served.” She sees the same people coming in time and time again. “Once someone has eaten our bread, they always come back to buy it. That’s a nice stamp to put on something you own.” Schen looks forward to growing the bakery side of the business in the future. “I’ve got the flavors in my head, and Dougie’s got the expertise to make them. But we don’t want to spread ourselves too thin. If you keep to what you do well, you increase your productivity and quality.” —Thomas Ellis

years is a long time in the restaurant business, but Jacqueline Schen still loves to see the smiles on customers’ faces after they’ve eaten at the Edgewater Grille. “We aim to please,” she says with a warm smile. “Whatever we need to do to make people happy, we’ll do.” Owner Schen is quick to point out the restaurant’s unique positioning on the Ohio River and the amazing view it offers. “That’s a nice claim to fame – it really makes us stand out,” she says. Scenery aside, the restaurant stands out for its varied menu of seafood, chicken, pork, beef and seasonal salads. And lately, customers are really starting to take notice of the homemade breads – baked on site with the finest ingredients. “In the last year and a half, I’ve reinvented the bakery here,” explains Schen. “I have an excellent baker, Dougie – I call him Uncle Dougie. He has years of experience and a real passion for bread. Together, we explore and create, always searching for ways to improve.” The quality of the breads comes from the ingredients which Schen takes pride in detailing. “We use durum flour from a supplier in Indianapolis, semolina pasta flour – which is lighter and has a different taste to it – and lots of whole wheat and natural products. There are no preservatives or additives. Some of the breads have a touch of honey or egg in them – like a brioche.” For just $4, you can purchase a 17 ounce loaf of these homemade creations. Choices include ciabatta, cranberry walnut, garlic or rosemary garlic bread, French baguette and more – usually about eight different flavors. According to Schen, the newest addition is a low-carb bread. “It’s all flax – sunflower seeds, very earthy,” she says. Specialty breads are also a feature of the bakery. “We often create new items for the holidays,” Schen explains. “For example, last Easter we made cherry, chocolate bread - that was incredible.” Breads can be special-ordered at any time – just a little notice is all they need. And it couldn’t be easier to stop in for a loaf. “You can pull right up to the restaurant, run in one of the sides, grab a loaf and be on your way,” says Schen. “It’s like going to a market – you don’t have to

W

hen it comes to family-friendly pizza joints it seems that every side of town has their favorite, and for west-siders, Parkway Pizza is it. Parkway had humble beginnings; current Owner and Operator Gary Schnell’s father started Parkway in 1975 and spread the word by good old fashioned footwork. He would pass out sample slices to those in line waiting to get into the west side drive-in movie theater. Needless to say, the taste spread like wildfire and the movie goers always came back to him for more. Gary started in his father’s business when he was 15 and currently, has devoted 24 years of his life to it. According to Gary, staying local and fresh is how he keeps Parkway a west side staple. “It is the ‘old school’ methods. We make our own dough. We use fresh meat from local butchers. We have fresh veggies daily. We make our own sauce and we use a gas-fired brick oven, not an electric one,” said Schnell. Upon entering the building it automatically felt familiar to me though I had never been there before. Parkway is a homey hybrid with elements of a sports bar, home-style family restaurant, small town dive and golden age food stand with the simple but spacious outdoor patio out front and a touch of your grandparent’s basement. The emphasis is not on style but on comfort and warm welcomes. It is unfiltered Americana. Now for the eats…The first dish brought to the table was Parkway’s Stromboli sandwich. It is subtle, melt in your mouth savory goodness. The beef has a slight spice that that comes in a minute or two after you have swallowed and the cheese is melty but not too heavy. This theme describes the sandwich as a whole: Satisfying and savory without making you feel like you need to go to the hospital after you leave. Next up was the Chicken Bacon Melt. It had tender, smoky chunks of chicken with sizable bits of bacon and a gooey cheese on a buttery, toasted baguette bun, same as the strom. The flavor of the chicken was prominent in this sandwich, which with other sandwiches I’ve had similar to this one, the

chicken is masked too much by the other components of the sandwich. But here, the ingredients work together in complete harmony and it makes for one savory Shangrila of a sandwich. Third to the table was the King of the Hill Pizza. It is named after Gary’s right hand man in the kitchen and it boasts 13 toppings! It is a texture and flavor smorgasbord. It is earthy, spicy, savory, slightly sweet and smoky in a crunchy, tender and melty frame. Naturally, it is a hefty pizza but the kaleidoscope of flavors balanced with the multiple textures make this Una-style pie truly decadent. You will feel like you deserve a crown after this one. Lastly, was the Buffalo Chicken pizza. Parkway’s entry of my one of my favorite pies was a much more subtle color than other buffalo chicken pizza I’ve had and the taste mirrored the appearance. The spice was a mere suggestion at the end but flavor itself was interesting. Within the buffalo zing was a slight sweetness, almost a citrus presence that I really enjoyed. It may not be that bold or spicy but it was unique, and it kept me reaching for another slice. So, without further hesitation, step out the normal routine and over to the west side to experience this deep-rooted, family-oriented Evansville eatery for yourself!

t El Rio Restaurant and Latin Club on Green River Road one can find authentic cuisine thanks to Co-owner and Cook Alma Soto and her husband Gustavo. Alma Soto is from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, home of the Huastecos population, and while she did not attend school, she shares, “I have learned everything I know from my ancestors, and my hard work in life.” Alma Soto’s hard work is evident at the well-reviewed El Rio, which boasts authentic, delicious and reasonably priced Mexican food with the best margaritas in town. The restaurant has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on Urbanspoon, and not only does the restaurant provide food, but it also has Latin music from 10 p.m. – 3 a.m. on Saturday nights.

El Rio Restaurant & Latin Club

Soto, though, came from humble beginnings, “I was a poor little girl who had nothing for herself but the love and advice from her mother. And when I was a young woman, I wanted to come [to the United States], like many others did, for a better opportunity in life.” She goes on to share, “I think that Mexican food is a very ancient art that deserves to be transported to the future.” When asked what brought Soto specifically to Evansville, she states, “I believe that destiny showed me the way to Evansville, but what brought me to the great USA was the extreme poverty I lived as a child. My grandmothers and my mother taught me to cook and I wanted to share what I learned from them.” And share she does. The wonderful dishes that are created at El Rio come from a special place in her heart. Soto shares that how she cooks comes from “love, it pushes me to do what I do. It is love for my family and humanity. Cooking for these wonderful people, to me, is like making a fiesta to life. I wake up every morning with the goal to give our customers a chance to eat something more natural and less processed foods, and to give the[m] [the] real taste of [the] food.” Now that Soto is a resident of Evansville, she states, “My favorite part about Evansville is the people. Everybody here is nice and polite. I can walk down the street and without knowing me, they smile and say hello.” In terms of Soto’s favorite item to prepare, she enjoys making the pork chops because she likes the mix of ingredients. She thinks that the mix gives her pork chops “a unique flavor, taste and texture.” Her favorite item to eat though is their new item in the menu, Enchiladas Potosinas. “Everything about this dish is made by hand... from the taste, to its colors, even to its special aroma,” she shares. For the lunch crowd, Soto recommends, “Lunch Number Two, which is a combination of one chicken enchilada, a side of rice or beans and a guacamole salad. I recommend this dish for its freshness, its delicious taste, it is quick to serve and [because it is] economical for the customer.” For the dinner crowd, Soto shares, “My top pick for our dinner crowd is Triple El Rio, [which] consists of grilled ribeye (thin slices), chicken and shrimp, served on a hot sizzling skillet, with onions, bell peppers, tomato and mushrooms. This dish includes tortillas (corn or flour), [and] customers can add hand-made tortillas to their meal for a dollar more.” Regardless of what she prepares, though, Soto puts a bit of her heart and soul into each meal. She says, “My mother, may she rest in peace, would say ‘the best ingredient for any food is cooking with love and joy, it is like having the opportunity to cook for God.’”

C

onsider yourself a beer connoisseur? A barbeque fan? Join Guardianship Services for their 2nd Annual Brewbeque on September 21st from 12-6 p.m. at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Fairgrounds. According to Director Arin Norris, there will be 65 craft beers from all over the world available to sample, paired with a delicious barbeque menu sure to satisfy a hearty appetite. “The best part about planning the Brewbeque is seeing people get the chance to try craft beer,” said Norris. All proceeds help fund Guardianships Services, which is a non-profit organization that provides legal aid to elderly, disabled people in our community. There will be a $10 entry fee and individual beer tickets sold for $.75. You must be 21 to enter and have a valid ID.

American Legion Kapperman Post 44

Bierstube T

he long tradition of the American Legion Bierstube continues September 14th at Kapperman Post 44 in Newburgh. An annual fundraiser dating back over 60 years, the event began as a stag party – known as the “Elmer Party” – but, not surprisingly, the guys eventually got tired of showing up alone. A new co-ed era dawned, and the rest is history. But all these years later, the American Legion still has the same mission: make money to give it away. Last year, the event drew over 400 people. This year, the organizers expect to attract even more people with a great line-up of music and activities. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., local favorite Junkyard Stereo will take the stage and play until 7:30 p.m. After an hour intermission, another crowd-pleaser, Hoosier Daddy will rock the party for the duration. While the music plays, gaming activities such as Texas hold ‘em, blackjack, and 7 card/5 card stud will be in full swing. Though inflation has taken its toll on the economy, you can still count on the American Legion for the cheapest beer in town. All night long, a 16 ounce glass will be yours for just 50 cents. That’s not a misprint. What more motivation do you need to attend? —Thomas Ellis The entrance fee is $10. Kapperman Post 44 is located at 711 State Street in Newburgh. Daniel Epperson

U

p and coming musician Daniel Epperson is not only winning over fans, but he is also taking home some impressive titles as well. In July, Epperson placed first in the Owensboro, KY Coca Cola sponsored music competition, which earned him a spot at the next level in Louisville. He was a finalist in WBKR’s “Battle for the Big O,” and Epperson was also the winner of WRUL Radio’s Country Showdown in Carmi, IL, in early August. That win came with a small cash prize as well as earning him a spot in the state finals at the end of August. Performing for the last three years, Epperson broke out around eight months ago and has been performing regularly on the weekends since. During the week, he helps build grain bins for Midwest Ag in Rockport, IN, but when he’s not working, he’s busy songwriting and performing. Epperson sings and also plays piano, guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass and “a little bit of everything.” He spends a great deal of his time songwriting, and he shares, “Most of the time I’m just writing away in hopes of writing that one song that relates to the guy that might be the one to sign me to a label.” Epperson got his start performing at a small church in Richland, IN, that was having a Valentine’s Day banquet and asked if he would come play a few songs. Since then, he’s been busy starting his music career, which has included the highlight of recording and producing the song “Redneck Heroes.” According to him, that turning point “just fueled me to excel and find out if I have what it takes to make it.”

70 | September 2013

To find his writing inspiration, Epperson goes on 40 day, free-writing spree once every six months or so. He describes the process as, “I will write for 40 days, every night, every chance I get. Every night being a different idea or topic. Then at the end, I combine the bits and pieces and see what I can come up with.” In addition to those concentrated writing times, he also adds, “I play every single night and usually write when a feeling comes to me [that] I know others can relate to.” Epperson’s favorite songs to perform are his acoustic originals. He says, “I love sharing my story with nothing but a guitar in my hands. I love seeing how other people relate with the stories I write through song.” He goes on to say, “God has put me together in a crazy, complicated way… The mindset I carry is so different than what others seem to carry. It’s all a thought process for me. I see things much different than most people.” His roots in Rockport have also played a part in his music. Epperson says, “Life influences my songs and my work every day. If I go through something in life, maybe a troubled time, that’s just a door waiting to be opened. When I write that song, that just opens a door between us and now you’ve been inspired or see how others have experienced the same thing you have.” When not playing music, Epperson shares that he loves, “hunting, fishing and playing music.” He goes on to add, “I thank God for all He’s done and I give all credit and honor to Him for what He’s done through my music.” —Nikki Davis For more information on Daniel Epperson, you can find him online at danielepperson.com as well as on his Facebook fan page.

B

ack in the mid to late 80’s, the old Ross Cinema and Alhambra Theatre played host to a vibrant alternative music scene in Evansville. One of the most intriguing groups from that era was The Falling Sky, led by guitar virtuoso Toby Ellis. The band’s sound was dark and jagged and totally of its time. But the times change, of course. Eventually, the scene started to fracture and fade as the 90’s approached. Grunge took over and Evansville lost a bit of its musical identity. Now, almost 25 years later, things have come full circle, and Ellis is once again at the forefront of a healthy local music scene with his new group The Waywards. After disbanding The Falling Sky, Ellis cut his losses and headed for Cincinnati. There, he made musical inroads as a sideman in various Americana bands. His skills were in demand – particularly his prowess on pedal steel guitar and the Dobro. “I worked in guitar shops from 1991 to 1998 and knew every musician in the city,” Ellis says. “The Americana scene was starting to take off, and I just kind of got swept up in it.” But as much as he enjoyed his role as a sideman, Ellis missed the creative process. To that end, he formed the first incarnation of The Waywards with other

The Waywards

local hired guns – the ultimate sideproject, so to speak. The music reflected what the members were listening to at the time: Buddy Miller, Gillian Welch, Wilco and Son Volt. That initial version of The Waywards called it a day when Ellis joined another Cincinnati outfit called The Hiders and headed to Nashville to record an album in February of 2006. In April, he moved back to Evansville to marry his girlfriend but didn’t stay long. “I went right out on the road with The Hiders that summer as a steel guitar player. The tour lasted through the fall, and then I was back in Evansville without a job, living off my savings,” Ellis says. But it wasn’t long before he made friends with several local musicians - chiefly, Dave Miller from Top Dead Center. They recruited a couple more players and performed as Toby Ellis & Friends, a rather generic billing. ”It just got aggravating. It’s such a terrible name,” Ellis says with a laugh,

“so we went back to The Waywards.” Over the last several years, the band has changed members a few times but now boasts a solid five-piece line-up that is reportedly firing on all cylinders. In addition to Ellis and Miller on guitar and vocals, the band also includes Steve “The Animal” Bennett (drums), Dustin Bredemeier (bass) and Nathan Jocum (keyboards). The chemistry and fresh approach of the new line-up inspired Ellis to completely re-record Drive, the band’s debut album. “It’s a bit like a greatest hits of all the stuff I’ve been writing since being back in Evansville,” he explains. “But even though some of the songs are old, they sound great with the new members.” Still, Ellis insists that to fully appreciate The Waywards, you need to see them live. “The album is really a calling card - the live show is where we really shine. There’s a little bluegrass, a little blues, a little roots-rock – pieces of everything we do. It appeals to a lot of people, but there aren’t many local bands that try to put all of those styles into one show.” —Thomas Ellis A CD release party is scheduled for September 14th at Doc’s Nightclub. Drive will also be available on iTunes, amazon.com and other major sites.

Evansville Youth

Hockey

Association G.O.A.L. Program By Thomas Ellis For many years, the Evansville Youth Hockey Association (EYHA) has been committed to providing the tri-state with a forum for kids to learn the fundamental skills of one of the most challenging and rewarding games.

T

he volunteer, non-profit organization not only offers the most comprehensive youth hockey programs in the tri-state but also strongly believes in fostering an educational atmosphere. Kids emerge from these programs with a stronger sense of self and knowledge that can be applied to life outside the rink. One of EYHA’s most successful programs is G.O.A.L. It’s free and available to boys and girls ages 4 to 12 who have never been in an EYHA league or program. A great introduction to the sport of hockey, G.O.A.L. gives kids a chance to learn the basics: forward strides, stops/starts, turns/crossovers, backwards skating, passing, shooting and more. Each participant is encouraged to actively participate in fun drills geared toward his or her skill level. EYHA Hockey Director, Craig MacDonald sees the challenge of playing on ice as a positive for these young novices. “While it’s more difficult in the beginning to pick up hockey as a brand new sport, that is also part of its appeal,” he explains. “Because it’s difficult and challenging, the kids take great pride in the early successes. Falling is not failing. That’s a huge mindset change. Once kids understand that, the sky is the limit.” The G.O.A.L. program is scheduled for September 21st, nd 22 , 28th and 29th at Swonder Ice Arena. Kids will be on the ice from 2 to 3 p.m. on those days. Free equipment is available from EYHA. A $65 deposit is required which will be returned when the equipment is returned on the 29th.

Register online at www.eyha.us. Swonder Ice Arena is located at 209 N. Boeke in Evansville. Questions: call Craig MacDonald, 812-471-9811 or email hockeydirector@eyha.us. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2013

Spaten Optimator

Hop Head Red Ale

Humboldt Brown Hemp Ale

Daniel Knight • 4 Brewed by Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu GmbH, which is the oldest privatelyowned brewery in Munich established in 1363. Optimator pours a very dark reddish brown. It has a minimal, tan head that dissipated almost immediately. I sense raisen, caramel and toasty malts and earthy hops (unlike citrusy IPA hops) at the start. There’s also a sweet maltiness and overall fruitiness while the 7.6% ABV creates a boozy warming effect. I truly enjoy this Doppelbock! I’d order a second with a designated driver.

Daniel Knight • 3.5 From Green Flash brewing in San Diego this is an American Red Ale with an emphasis on hoppiness. It pours up with a rich, creamy, tan 3/4” head that sticks around for a while. The aroma is earthy, pungent and hoppy. I like. The initial upfront flavor was somewhat disappointing for me. The malt flavor is a little weak, but… the hoppiness roars back at the finish. Overall, I enjoyed this one. Yes, I’ll have another someday.

Daniel Knight • 3 Brewed by Nectar Ales in California, it displays a thick, bubbly and beige head that hangs around for at least five minutes. The aroma is mildly roasted, bready malts, some nuttiness and a bit of spice. Pretty low key. I taste mostly light cocoa and faint hints of roasted malt, maybe some molasses. I don’t know what hemp tastes like but didn’t experience a particularly unique flavor. Frankly, I am somewhat unimpressed. It’s drinkable, but I don’t think I’d order another unless my options were limited.

Paul Bragin • 5 This widely popular German doppelbock fills the glass with an opaque brown to black liquid and a noticeable tan head that disappears quickly. Smelling the beer packs the nose with a scent of deeply roasted malt. The roasted malt flavor on the tongue is great. There is little to no hop bitterness. It is easy to see why this beer is popular at German events like Oktoberfest. This is arguably one of Germany’s best exports. Jabez Martinez • 2.5 I think this one may have been skunked but I am not sure. It did have a deep copper color and I could smell the yeast and sweet caramel. It has a 7.6 % ABV. I am always a fan of the pumped up beers but this one was not very good. It has good carbonation but it really hangs onto the pallet.

Paul Bragin • 4 This deep red beer that is a cross between a red ale and an India pale ale produces a thick, tan head that hangs on for some time before evaporating. The nose gives off a very strong hop scent with citrus and pine notes. The hop flavor continues while sipping the beer. This beer is not for the faint of heart, but aficionados of hoppy beers should definitely seek out this one. Jabez Martinez • 2.5 This beer had a strong hops aroma like the label might imply and has a tint of red to it also. All I could taste was the strong hops flavor. It coated my tongue and created a bitter finish. I am not an IPA fan but anyone who enjoys IPA’s would probably enjoy this brew.

Paul Bragin • 4 The rich, dark brown beer has a thin, creamy head that quickly evaporates. The enjoyable scent of roasted malt immediately hits the nose. Some hop bitterness balances out the malt sweetness in the beer. The bottle says the beer is brewed with hemp. The addition of hemp did not seem to add much to the beer, but this is still a phenomenal beverage. This beer could become a favorite as the colder months approach. Jabez Martinez • 3 This is a brownish beer with an amber hue. It has good carbonation and an above average hops flavor. It has the standard caramel flavor but also a very bitter finish. It says it has hemp in it but this gimmick was lost on me.

Summit Horizon Red Ale

Daniel Knight •3.5 This American Red Ale pours an expected reddish copper color with a healthy, 3/4” off-white head that lasts for several minutes. It starts off with a caramel-like, malt character before the bitterness of the hops takes over. After the bitterness lingers for a bit, bready and slightly burnt tasting malt kicks in along with the citrus of the hops. This brew is sort of a Red Ale/IPA hybrid. I’d order another and probably enjoy it more than the first.

Paul Bragin • 4 This beer pours a pleasantly deep red color in the glass and has a white head that rests at the top of the glass for a minute before dissipating. There is a very noticeable hop scent. The taste is hoppy and citrusy, but the malt presence balances out the flavor. Pair it with spicy foods and smoked foods like barbecue. It might not be for everyone, but hopheads should definitely give this beer a try. Jabez Martinez• 2.5 This is another brown beer like the others that were reviewed this month. It has a slight red tint to it but other than that, it tasted like all the rest. It seemed to be an IPA disguised as a Brown Ale. I usually like other Summit beers, but not this one.

Cigar Review: A Great Bourbon

W

hat cigar should be smoked with a great bourbon? At the Liquor Locker, we have a wide selection of cigars which range from mild to full-flavored, and the wonderful beverages to go with them. A medium-bodied cigar such as a NUB Cameroon 460 or the CAO Cameroon play well with medium strength drinks such as single barrel bourbons like Evan Williams, Elijah Craig and Eagle Rare. Medium-bodied cigars are also tasty with rich red wines, rum and single-malted whiskeys like Benromach or Glenfiddich. For those who like to experiment, this is a good way to relieve the tension of the day while thinking noble thoughts and dreaming of the future. It is also a lot of fun to have these parings with close friends!

Ferdinand Folk

Festival 2013: An Interview with Headliner

Todd Snider By Claire Edwards

Taking place on September 21 starting at 11 a.m., the Ferdinand Folk Festival is a daylong event that offers music by both local and nationally recognized artists, food, art and environmental awareness booths.

S

ome of the acts featured this year at the festival include the Dirty Guv’nahs, a six-piece rock n’ roll collective from Knoxville, Tenn., a young ‘rootsgrass’ band from Ann Arbor, Mich. called Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys and local blues guitar prodigy Boscoe France and his band. In addition to the enjoying the many musical acts performing at the festival, patrons can also peruse the art market which showcases works from local and regional artists. Also offered are a variety of activities such as a songwriter’s workshop focusing on how to harmonize, multiple kid’s activities and a falconry demonstration. The friendly environment and large number of available attractions makes attending the Ferdinand Folk Festival a unique and fun experience, comparable to a full-scale outdoor music festival but FREE!

Below is an interview with Todd Snider, headliner of this year’s festival.

News4U (N4U): What where some of the goals you hoped to achieve with your latest release Agnostic Hymns and Stoner Fables? Todd Snider (TS): I didn’t have any goals. The point was just to create something. News4U (N4U): Does the emotional level of many of your songs on this release affect your live performance? TS: Yeah, if I can’t really get into a song then I hate performing it. Even if the audience wants to hear a song and I’m not feeling it then I won’t play it. When I was in my twenties I would write songs about broken hearts even when I was perfectly happy because I really liked performing them live. N4U: What is your greatest inspiration? TS: Probably 70’s television, because that’s what I grew up with and it reminds me of that time in my life. I feel like that’s all music or art is. Painters and musicians are just trying to preserve stuff, if you get what I mean.

N4U: How do you feel your music has evolved since your first album Songs for the Daily Planet? TS: I at least hope it’s become humbler and maybe more wise. When I was younger I thought that by being a musician I had already achieved everything, now I put a lot more thought into my music because I’m not just making music for the sake of making music anymore. N4U: What do you feel is the most important message your music conveys? TS: Just creativity and whatever the song means to the listener. N4U: What is your favorite aspect of performing a live show? TS: Well, it sounds shallow, but I really like when people clap for me. I mean, that’s really the point. The rush you get from the applause and the energy.

Local Business Spotlight

Smoke-Free Communities: After sitting down and talking with David King, Franklin Lanes owner, it didn’t take long to realize how much great history this local attraction has.

P

roudly displayed on the back wall of Franklin Lanes is every 300 game ever bowled there, with the first perfect game dating back to 1944. King began working at Franklin Lanes in 1958 and later purchased it in 1985. He told me great stories, like how in July of 1945 the alleys were covered with plywood to create a dance floor. This dance floor wasn’t just created for any old sock hop, but for jazz legend, Duke Ellington. Franklin Lanes has all the amenities you would expect in a bowling alley, including one of the best burgers in town, which I can personally attest to. Franklin Lanes offers open bowling on most nights and time bowling, where you pay by time on the lanes rather than per game. Franklin Lanes also offers many different types of adult and youth leagues. An adult and youth league will be starting October 6th as well as a bumper league for children 8 and under beginning on September 7th. Franklin Lanes is also a great place for hosting parties and fundraisers. If you have been to Franklin Lanes in the past year, one thing you probably immediately noticed was that there is no longer any cigarette smoke. One aspect typically associated

with bowling alleys has been the smoky atmosphere, but no more. Having worked in the bowling industry for over 50 years, King has seen a lot of changes and going smokefree was one he personally enjoys. According to King, the alley’s smokefree status has made the bowling alley more family-friendly and has increased the amount of birthday parties and fundraisers held at Franklin Lanes. It has also had no negative effect on their league participation. Being smokefree has definitely made the cleaning duties at Franklin Lanes much easier. The place just looks nicer and smells better. So if you’re looking for something to do, check out Franklin Lanes. The alley has a fun atmosphere, rich history and it’s always great to support a locally owned business. And if you’re in the mood, King is definitely not short on interesting stories. While there still may be an occasional gutter ball, one thing you can count on is having a great time and breathing clean air. —Casey Williams, Assistant Director for Healthy Communities Partnership

Tobacco Free Initiative and Smokefree Communities Franklin Lanes is located at 1801 West Franklin Street in Evansville, IN. Reservations and league registrations can be made by calling 812-423-6204 or check them out at www.franklinlanes.net.

cinema new releases

Oblivion

Universal Tom Cruise plays Jack Harper, a drone repairman in the year 2073. He lives and works on Earth with his significant other, Vicka (Andrea Riseborough). After an invading alien species called “Scavs” destroys our Moon and we nuke the planet to save ourselves, humanity is evacuated. Oblivion starts off well enough, with a post-apocalyptic sci-fi plot full of palpable mystery and beautiful cinematography, but literally dies half way through and what little emotion it had, is forgotten and disregarded. If the filmmakers could have spent more time on the human condition and less time trying to out-do the previous plot twist with the next, Oblivion would have had a better chance of being remembered. These ambiguous titles are starting to scare me.

Mud

Lionsgate Matthew McConaughey plays Mud, a fugitive held up on a small island in the Mississippi River outside the almost-as-small Arkansas town where he grew up. The story builds gradually and effectively through the eyes of Ellis, a 14 yearold hopeless romantic who still thinks that love conquers all. Almost any dialogue exchange where the two boys are involved is top notch entertainment. Ellis’s coming-of-age tale and his evolving relationship with Mud is heartwarming and at times tiptoes behind becoming classic. However, the focus of this film is as clear as its title. In the end, we do not know if our hearts should belong to Ellis or Mud. As a protagonist, Mud was the clear choice for me, but all of the emotion belonged to Ellis. These ambiguous titles are starting to scare me. —Ben Clark

September 13 The Family

Relativity Media After mafia boss Giovanni Manzoni (Robert De Niro) snitches on fellow mafia leaders, his family falls under the protection of CIA Agent Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones) and is relocated to Normandy, France. This is basically what would happen if The Sopranos moved to France. For the rest of the world the film will be titled Malavita after the novel written by Tonino Benacquista, which is available in English as Badfellas. Malavita is the name of the family dog who follows De Niro’s character everywhere he goes. With a clever setup and a novel worth of material, let’s hope the filmmakers can bring this one home.

September 13 Prisoners

Warner Bros. After his 6-year-old daughter and her best friend are kidnapped and the only suspect is released by police, a desperate father kidnaps the kidnapper and tries to find answers on the whereabouts of the two girls. Hugh Jackman plays Keller Dover, the father who unravels when police hit a dead end. Terrence Howard and Viola Davis play Franklin and Nancy Birch, and are having Thanksgiving dinner with Keller and his wife, Grace (Maria Bello), when the girls go missing. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Loki, a dedicated but young police detective assigned to the case. The film was written by Aaron Guzikowski, who was credited on the recent film Contraband starring Mark Wahlberg. Canadian director, Denis Villeneuve, is a three-time winner of the Genie Award for Best Director and Best Picture. It will be interesting to see how in-depth these filmmakers can go into blurring those lines between saving a kidnapped child and losing your soul in the process. —Ben Clark Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2013

LOCAL BAND SPOTLI G HT Project CBS

cd reviews Puscifer

All Re-Mixed Up Puscifer Entertainment 4/5 ABOUT THE BAND:

Project CBS is a jazz, fusion power trio led by myself (Shawn Needham) on guitar, Bryce Klueh on bass and Charles Johnson on drums. We’ve been together for about a year. I’ve known Bryce since 2007 and we have played in many bands together including the Black Sheep and Velair 7. I met Charles at the Guitar Center drum off and was blown away by his amazing playing. I knew we had to play together. WHAT YOU COVER/DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE:

We are mostly original music. I write all the material and draw influences from all over the musical spectrum. The tunes are complex but with an emphasis on funky grooves. The few covers we do are some of my favorite fusion artists. Weather Report, Mike Stern, Oz Noy, Pat Martino, etc… THEIR INFLUENCES:

As a group, we draw influences from all over the map. I listen to and draw influences from anything from some country guitar players to fusion, to straight ahead jazz to disco. I like to draw ideas from jazz horn players as well. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES:

We play once a month at Mojo’s Boneyard from 9-12 p.m. and starting September 11 we will be playing every Wednesday night at the Jungle from 6-9 p.m.

It’s no surprise that All Re-Mixed Up is self-released by Puscifer. Not many record labels these days are in the market to promote a track-by-track reconfiguration

of an old album. It’s their loss. This project may have had disaster written all over it, but it succeeds on every level. Then again, Maynard Keenan rarely puts a wrong foot forward – his quality control is legendary. In fact, the remixes are so good that it’s virtually an entirely new album often better than the original. “Telling Ghosts” is a good example of this. Re-imagined by Carina Round, the track begins with a dissonant, industrial blast but soon makes way for Keenan’s melancholy vocals – only to then shift again and go off on an even heavier, no-wave tangent before crashing to a halt. “The Weaver” receives an aural facelift from Aaron Harris, the track seemingly swallowed up in layers of reverb until the dark synths and distant vocals virtually become one. “Man Overboard” is the star of the show. Alain Johannes creates an oppressive soundtrack that suffocates with its looped vocal samples and Keenan’s multi-tracked sermon. Like “The Weaver,” the voices and instruments are virtually indistinguishable by the end. Cynics may view All Re-Mixed Up as nothing but the re-packaging of an old album. The fans know better.

Baroness

Live at Maida Vale – BBC Relapse Records 4/5

There’s no doubt about it, BBC recordings rock. So, it was a foregone conclusion that one of America’s best metal bands would tear it up at Maida Vale studios. Rest assured Baroness does not disappoint. The Georgia quartet blitzes through four tracks from 2012’s Yellow & Green with abandon. That album may not have received the red carpet treatment of 2009’s Blue Record, but you’d never guess it from the way these songs come across like instant metal classics. “Cocainium” begins like a Rogers Waters tribute with appropriately sleepy finger-picking before building to a simple guitar assault that leaves plenty of room for the dual vocals and beguiling lyrics: “Tell me when the blood stops flowing / let it rest, it’s run into the ground / just in case the dogs are feeding / shut the door so they won’t hear the sound.” “Take My Bones Away” is full-on from beginning to end with a distinct Queens of the Stone Age vibe while “March to the Sea” briefly simmers before reaching maximum impact. It’s reminiscent of Killing Joke’s “Democracy,” albeit sludgier. Finally, “The Line Between” takes Metallica’s “Fuel” riff and ramps it up before sneaking in the sort of catchy metal chorus that James Hetfield wants to write but can’t.

dk Wells

Thank God for Thomas Edison Self-Released 4/5 It’s hard to imagine how local producer/ director/ publisher/ writer/ promoter/ photographer/ consultant/ entrepreneur dk Wells even found the time to record an album, but thank God he did. And thank God for Thomas Edison, too, because he inspired one of the catchiest songs you’re likely to hear all year. The opening track on Wells’ selfproduced new release is a five minute, hook-filled musical salute to the great inventor. Over a simple three chord progression, he croons quite humorously about his love for the man: “Thank God for Thomas Edison / he made my favorite medicine, made it possible to play / thank God for Thomas Edison / he made me favorite medicine - electric blues to chase the night away.” “Holiday Inn” is a cheeky re-write of “Wild Thing,” detailing some sort of (fictional?) lascivious rendezvous at the budget hotel: “One room, two twins/ behind closed doors, let the party begin.” But just when you thought it was all fun and games, Wells gets all sentimental. “Wondering Aloud” is a gorgeously orchestrated lament that builds quite dramatically to an abrupt conclusion, seemingly unfinished but powerful in its brevity. Is there nothing Wells can’t do? Perhaps, but it’s clear that “musician” belongs on his resume.

cd sidebar The O 's

Thunderdog Punch Five Records

John Pedigo and Taylor Young combine a relaxed bluegrass sound with feel-good lyrics to create Thunderdog, their latest release. This album’s sound is reminiscent of releases from The Punch Brothers and Mumford and Sons. Additionally, the upbeat nature of Thunderdog begins right from the start with the opening song “Outlaw” which expresses feelings of freedom and joy in a way that is easily relatable to most listeners. Though there are a few pieces that aren’t as happy-go-lucky, they still maintain the album’s laid-back and joyous nature. Overall, Thunderdog is an uplifting listen with a classic style.

SOiL

Whole Pavement Records

The Waywards

Drive Self-released 4.5/5 Local guitar hero Toby Ellis is back to reclaim his rightful place in the pantheon of brilliant Evansville musicians. It’s been 25 years since he first appeared on the local scene with the alternative duo (plus drum machine) The Falling Sky, but Ellis has only improved with age. While the roots-rock sound of Drive may be at odds with his pseudo-gothic past, it feels completely natural and effortless. Reportedly re-recorded after Ellis finally solidified the ultimate band line-up, the album represents the fruits of his musical labor over the last several years. Title track “Drive” is a dark, mysterious journey with a lyrically open-ended chorus: “Gonna get on the road / take a long time / turn up the radio / take a little drive.” The destination may be up in the air, but the band is on fire. Guitars communicate like old friends, the bass and drums are securely locked and the keys come and go right on cue. “Come Back to Me” is a Spanish-flavored tribute to a lost love. Ellis’ guitar work is straight off an Ennio Morricone soundtrack, sweeping and cinematic, indeed. “Surf’s Up” takes things home as advertised. A nod to 60’s-era bands like The Ventures, its dueling guitars and organ flourishes make you long for riding a wave – take Drive for another spin. —Thomas Ellis

Angry and loud, this album is standard rock n’ roll. Although the sound is fairly generic, it serves a purpose. The aggressive lyrics and heavy fast-paced guitar provides a perfect outlet for listeners. Songs such as “The Hate Song” and “Psychopath” help to solidify the album’s violent themes. Whole’s overall sound and hostile nature are relatively consistent with that of their previous releases. The album’s themes are tied together by the album artwork made to look like a bullet hole dripping blood.

Von Grey

Self-Titled Music VG Records

This sister group’s debut EP features a melodic, yet alternative style with strong vocals. The release sounds like a fusion of the blues and folk styles, which help it appeal to a wide range of listeners. Although the songs lack lyrical depth, the passionate vocals help listeners connect to the album’s emotional theme. The gentile nature of the songs provides an easy though unremarkable listening experience. This self-titled EP captures the unique qualities of the Von Grey sisters and portrays an authentic though not unusual overall sound.
