A Wintry Mix & Floydian Slips >> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, One of these days in the transitional month of March, that fat old sun will regain its title of astronomy domine in our hemisphere and relieve us from the terminal frost that has been the winter of 2014. At this point we have all become comfortably numb to the charms of old man winter (even me) and have done our damndest to fill the time, shun the sorrow and keep warm. Before signs of life begin to show, it’s fortunate that this month is fully-stocked with a mix of events to please many different entertainment palates and to get the blood pumping. If you were to choose any colour you like for March, choose green, green is the colour. Our St. Patrick’s Day Bar Guide will give you high hopes for finding the right St. Patty’s Day party sequence for you! This month is huge for the theatre in the tri-state. It is an ideal way to occupy the empty spaces of your psyche. Hair and the Million Dollar Quartet will be performed at the Old National Event Plaza (formerly the Centre) and A Few Good Men will take the stage at the Evansville Civic Theatre. All three performances will have you lost for words. Though the cold may persist, the show must go on!

Additionally, March is loaded with charitable events the will breathe life into our community. The 2nd Annual Night of Vision Gala to benefit the Evansville Association for the Blind, Crop for the Cure to benefit Susan G. Komen Evansville, Trivia Tonight to benefit Aurora Inc. and the Spay-ghetti & No Balls Dinner to benefit the Vanderburgh Humane Society. Dogs and cats may run like hell from that last one, but you need to be fearless in attending all these great events. As for interviews, this issue includes a word from Mr. Bill Maher who will be performing at the Victory, surely addressing our crumbling land and urging us not to take the narrow way. Also, spilling a saucerful of secrets is the only Yankee in Brit Floyd (performing at the Ford Center), Ian Cattell, who inspired this edition of Editor’s Corner. You will find all of this and much more in this issue! Is there anybody out there?

CELEBRATED –
Bill Maher
and occasionally vilified – for his uncensored, leftleaning political and social commentary, comedian Bill Maher is the very definition of “OPINIONATED.” by Thomas Ellis
L I V E AT T H E V I C TO RY
T
he former host of Politically Incorrect and current host of the long-running HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher is no stranger to controversy; but few comedians approach such heavy topics as religion or war with such intelligence – or humor. His thought-provoking, roundtable discussions on Real Time prove that people with opposing views can not only hold rational discussions but also laugh with each other. And that’s the key to Maher’s enduring career – he finds the funny in the most unlikely places.
Rest assured Maher will push the boundaries of comedy when he comes to the Victory Theatre on March 29. He kindly spoke with News4U about life as a free-thinking comedian. 6 | March 2014
• www.evansvillemediagroup.com
News4U (N4U): Somewhat seriously, Evansville seems like an odd choice for you as a comedian. Your material seems to play best in bigger, more liberal cities. Bill Maher (BM): Well, look, I’ll go anywhere. I’m going to Mobile, Ala. in a few days, in fact. All I can tell you is that nothing gives me more pleasure nothing is more fun to do - than stand-up comedy. But it’s really tough when you start out – it’s painful. I mean, can you imagine learning something in front of people who are just staring at you? In an office setting, if you screw up a computer program, it doesn’t heckle you (laughs). I feel like now that I’m good, I might as well go out and redeem myself for all those painful years and have a good time doing it. N4U: Your 2008 documentary, Religulous, seems like it could easily have been a disaster due to the X factor of working with a loose script not to mention the sensitive subject matter. BM: At any step of the way it could have been a disaster. I remember very well, along the process of filming, we thought it was going to turn out that way. The first cut that director Larry Charles did of the movie was screened, and it was terrible. The scenes weren’t in the right order and some parts were too long, some too short. We had all the footage, but the cliché is that movies are made in the editing room. But it’s true. We finally got it all put together in the right way. But the real challenge was getting the movie made – it took over 10 years to get a movie studio to make it. No studio today would ever do it. I had an offer from Paramount to put it out, but I declined, because I knew that as soon as they started to get the letters and the calls from people who were outraged, they would have never released it theatrically. We were lucky to find Lionsgate who were just the right company at just the right time. N4U: Do you find that you have to modify any of your material depending on where you’re performing – especially your religious humor? BM: No, I never do. But you’re right; religion is the one area that sometimes makes a portion of the crowd tense. Usually, the political material is pretty
uniformly accepted. If I go after the Republicans – which I mostly do – the crowd is almost always cool with that, always on the same page. But you know Democrats are not atheists, generally. And so there is usually a percentage of the crowd that does not agree with me about religion. But you know that? That’s okay. It’s okay not to agree with somebody all the time. This is what I found out when I first went on the air with Politically Incorrect. People told me ‘you cannot be a television host and give your political opinion.’ Johnny Carson never did it. To this day, Jay Leno doesn’t do it – neither does David Letterman. You don’t know where they stand politically. But I decided to try it just to see if the American public could take it. And you know what? They can – they can still like you even if they don’t agree with everything you say. There’s a way to make people laugh; sometimes people find themselves laughing at things they didn’t think they would laugh at. And then a little light goes off in their head. They kind of say to themselves, ‘gee, if I’m laughing at that, maybe it is kind of ridiculous.’
my show, we’ll go out afterwards. I mean, I am the person who made her famous – we put her on Politically Incorrect about 25 times. People always ask me, ‘Does she really mean what she says?’ I don’t know. I can’t get inside a Republican’s head anymore than I can tell you why my dog steals tissues out of the garbage. All I can tell you is she seems sincere, and that’s one reason why she and I never talk politics, because we just know we don’t agree (laughs). But like most Republicans, when you get them talking about anything but politics, they are very often very nice, cool people. It’s just that their politics are awful (laughs).
N4U: Politically Incorrect famously brought together celebrities from all walks of life. My personal favorite was the episode that featured Marilyn Manson and Florence Henderson. BM: That was kind of the epitome of what we did. We always tried to mismatch people. It was the bane and the boon of that show. I always say Politically Incorrect was sort of a planned train wreck. Some nights the train wreck was hysterically funny, and some nights it was just a train wreck. Real Time is sort of a whole different show. It’s not supposed to be a train wreck. We’re not inviting people on who are idiots to sit with people who are really smart – we’re inviting only the smart people. N4U: Speaking of mismatched people, you and conservative Ann Coulter seem to have a dynamic similar to John Stewart and Bill O’Reilly. Are the two of you actually friends? BM: We are friends – friends that don’t see each other a whole lot. She lives in an undisclosed location. About once a year, if she’s in town she’ll call me or if she’s on

Take Advantage of Teachable Moments Some weeks it seems like the headlines are full of celebrity train wrecks. Think Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus or Lindsay Lohan, and these are the lucky ones. They’re still alive, if not always well or well-behaved. Unfortunately, drug addictions regularly claim the lives of stars, including actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cory Monteith and singers Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse. When kids idolize entertainers who take a troubling turn, it poses challenges for parents. The best response is to turn these tragic missteps into teachable moments. Preventing and delaying the first use of drugs and alcohol is critically important. Studies show children who start drinking and using drugs before the age of 15 are five times more likely to become addicts as adults. The headlines can become a springboard for parents to begin a meaningful conversation. Kids who learn a lot about the risks of drugs and alcohol from their parents are 50% less likely to use, according to Drugfree.org. Start by simply asking your child a question to find out what he knows or how she feels about the news. “I wonder” statements also help invite responses. For example: • I wonder why Miley Cyrus sings about using drugs. • What do you think about Justin Bieber’s arrest? • How do you feel about the actor who died from a drug overdose? • Listen carefully to your child’s opinions without passing judgment, and then share your perspective. Be careful not to embark on a long lecture. Keep your statements brief and to the point. Weave in a few facts about the consequences of substance abuse and ways to steer clear of temptations.

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s present:
Musical Fairytales by Jaimie Humbert
“Once upon a time..”
flies off the page as some of the most beloved fairytales are told through music at the Evansville Philharmonic’s performance of Musical Fairytales on Saturday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at the Victory.
O
pen your imagination with enchanted performances including Rossini’s Cinderella Overture, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite and a special solo performance of Mozart’s 2nd Horn Concerto by hornist Eric Reed. “A classics concert bound in lore and fantasy,” explains Reed. “As with any art, especially music, it’s subject to the audience’s interpretation. Anything you listen to, you can imagine some sort of story there. Landscapes. Characters.” Reed is an Evansville native who recently joined the American Brass Quintet, internationally recognized as one of the premier chamber music ensembles and the Ensemble-in-Residence of The Juilliard School. With a local start in marching band, today Reed freelances as a musician for orchestras, Broadway pits and ensembles. He views his role in the Philharmonic’s Musical Fairytales as a homecoming, having formerly participated in the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, which he praises as an opportunity to “bring talented young musicians, who are studying their instruments, together.” “The fairytale theme holds the performance together,” says Reed, and while Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 2 is not a direct retelling of a fairytale, Reed describes the composition as playful. “Mozart was well-known to be a humorist and a fun-loving character.” The famed composer wrote the concerto for a friend, and according to Reed, the 2nd Horn Concerto is, in part, an inside jest, a way of “communicating jokes through the music.”
Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 2 fits the program because “it will take you somewhere else,” promises Reed. Mozart’s Concerto consists of three movements changing from fast to slow to a fast finale. Reed looks forward to the lyrical 2nd movement for its simplicity and the rollicking 3rd movement which Reed likens to “horn players on horseback.” Musical Fairytales opens with Rossini, famous for his opera The Barber of Seville, who was a young man of 25 years when he wrote his opera of the Cinderella story. Youth lends a certain fondness toward fairytales, and the Philharmonic’s performance of Rossini’s Cinderella Overture is sure to set the tone of playful possibilities. Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite focuses on legendary stories such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Enchanted Garden.” Inspired by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont’s tale of the spell-cast Beast and the little Beauty who is surprised to discover the “Beast was disappeared, and . . . at her feet, one of the loveliest princes that eye ever beheld,” Ravel gives voice to the classic characters through the contrabassoon and clarinet. The evening concludes with Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, a lighthearted, neoclassical master work and “a real showstopper,” according to Reed. Based on an 18th-century play, Pulcinella is a comedic stock character originating from Commedia dell’arte. No matter the audience, a concert of musical fables and folklore “makes you imagine something,” claims Reed. Revisiting traditional tales through music, as if leafing through the familiar chapters of our favorite childhood stories, will unloose the imagination.

Discovery World Tour
at the Ford Center by Nick Durcholz
A
child of the summer of 1969, you may say Ian Cattell of Brit Floyd was born with rock and roll reverberating through his veins. Playing the part of Roger Waters and sometimes inhabiting the voice of David Gilmour, Cattell is an immense talent and a driving force in “The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show.” Cattell and Brit Floyd will be stopping in Evansville on March 10 for their Discovery World Tour. The show is a must-see for all of Pink Floyd fandom!
Cattell once again granted News4U a moment of his time to talk Floyd and more.
News4U (N4U): What is going to be different about this year’s show? Ian Cattell (IC): Well, this year it’s the Discovery Tour which is a box set Pink Floyd came out with that has every one of their studio albums re-mastered. And what we’re doing is we’re playing at least one song from every single one of their albums with all the hits everyone wants to hear on top of that. So, it’s really retrospective of Pink Floyd’s entire career. N4U: In your mind, what song inhabits the Pink Floyd live experience? IC: I think it would be “Comfortably Numb.” It’s just epic in nature, just like the overall catalog of Pink Floyd and it really does stand out as far as the lyrics and the songwriting and the guitar solos. All of those things really do shine in that song and it something that we often play towards the end of the night – if not - for an encore. There are so many
different elements of Pink Floyd. I think “Comfortably Numb” kind of encapsulates the later era. N4U: Have you always gravitated towards the bass guitar or did the instrument just come to you with your role in the band? IC: It came to me, but well before I was playing Pink Floyd for a living. I have a very musical family. I started out – as a young child – on piano and violin. Then, my main instrument for many years was the trumpet and that is what I went to music school for. I was already in college before I started playing bass a lot. But, it turns out that I got more gigs playing bass then playing trumpet. It was somewhat of a pragmatic thing, but I would say it definitely fits my personality. I think bass fits me very well. I enjoy being the support and the structure of the band rather than doing all the solos and all that.
N4U: Hey, trumpet is coming back though… You could always use that as your fall back right? IC: Yeah, sure! Yeah… And as a matter of fact, we’ve always toyed with the idea of playing “Summer of ’68.” Our saxophone player is a multi-instrumentalist. He plays bass a lot of times when I’m playing Pink and running around the stage doing theatrical things. So, we were thinking of doing “Summer of ‘68” with me on trumpet… It has yet to happen, but hopefully it will at some point. N4U: Inhabiting the role of Roger Waters in the band, what aspect of him have you come to admire most? IC: I enjoy the emotional and theatrical aspect of singing his lyrics. They are very expressive. Not just in the words but in the way that he sings them.
Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including thefordcenter.com, the Ford Center Box Office or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. The show begins at 8 p.m.

Broadway at the Old National Events Plaza
present:
by Thomas Ellis
It was the jam session of all jam sessions – four of the greatest performers of all time in one room, playing simply for the love of music.
F
or one incredible night in December of 1956, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins came together at the behest of “the father of rock ‘n’ roll,” Sam Phillips. Tapes rolled in Sun Studio as the ultimate super group barreled through one classic after another: “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Walk the Line,” “Hound Dog,” “Great Balls of Fire” and many more. Almost 60 years later, that improbable recording session has achieved nearly mythical status – and inspired a News4U (N4U): You’re only 24. How were you introduced to the music of Jerry Lee Lewis? John Countryman (JC): When I was about 14, I was really getting into piano. My mom – who is a big Elvis fan and loves rock and roll – told me that I should check out Jerry Lee Lewis. At the time, I was listening to the oldies station in town, so I was already familiar with some of that stuff, but my interest really took off when I heard Jerry Lee Lewis – I really loved his playing style, that boogie-woogie sort of thing. N4U: What’s the audition process like to join an award-winning production? JC: It’s a lot of waiting (laughs). I initially sent a video in of me playing piano and didn’t get any response. But then a friend of mine who knew the producers took the same video in to them, and I got an email within three weeks. But then another six months went by before I heard from them again – and then another nine months after that. I was finally offered the part just a couple days after I got married. I quit my banking job, went on my honeymoon and played my first show with the production soon after.
Tony Award-winning production, Million Dollar Quartet. The show, which comes to the Old National Events Plaza on March 26, recreates the magic of that night and celebrates the early days of rock ‘n’ roll.
John Countryman (Jerry Lee Lewis), the newest member of the touring company, spoke with News4U about the thrill of being a part of the production. N4U: The story behind the “MDQ” seems just as amazing as the music. How is it addressed in the show? JC: What’s really cool about the show is that it takes the time to tell you a little bit about each of the guys, because not everyone is familiar with all of the people involved like the owner of Sun Studio, Sam Phillips, or Carl Perkins. It’s done in such a great way that it really captures the moment of having all of these guys in the studio together. N4U: Jerry Lee Lewis is the only member of the “MDQ” still alive. Does that make it more challenging to portray him on stage? JC: There’s some trepidation, but I’m just trying to excite people and capture some of that electricity that was happening in 1956. I remember one night there was a lady with a walker out in the lobby after the show. She told me, ‘I haven’t moved that much in 20 years!’ and I was just like, ‘wow’ (laughs). That’s the energy I’m trying to bring to the show every night. Without trying to sound too trite, this is really a dream come true. I love the music, and I love the man.

Evansville Philharmonic Chorus
Spring Choral Concert by Thomas Ellis
“
We have members ranging in age from high school to singers in their late 70’s and early 80’s.” — EPC President Elect, Daniel Besing
The first half of the Evansville Philharmonic’s 2013-2014 “Silver Season” lived up to all the hype with memorable performances including Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and Handel’s Messiah by Candlelight.
T
hen in January, a red-hot “Strings on Fire!” kicked off the second half of the season followed by the seriously soulful return of “Gospel Night” and the timely classic Romeo & Juliet in February. Not to be outdone, March is packed with three must-see shows beginning with the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus (EPC) Spring Choral Concert on March 8 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Conductor Andrea Drury will lead the EPC through a stirring performance of the “Durufle Requiem.” The piece, written by French composer Maurice Durufle, consists of nine movements heavily influenced by themes from Gregorian chants. It was commissioned in 1947 by the French music publisher Durand and composed in memory of Durufle’s father. According to EPC President Elect, Daniel Besing, the chorus is currently about 150 strong – and quite eclectic. “We have members ranging in age from high school to singers in their late 70’s and early 80’s,” he says. “As long as someone has the talent and can devote enough time to it, we don’t have an age limit.” Besing got his start with the EPC about seven years ago. A natural talent, the 37-year-old bass (two) singer performs whenever and wherever he can. “I sing with the Evansville Barbershoppers and a couple of church choirs – never had any real training. I just started when I was in high school at Gibson Southern and have always enjoyed it,” he says.
Despite the complexity of the “Durufle Requiem” – and the added challenge of tackling a piece unfamiliar to many of the EPC singers – Besing is confident about the upcoming concert. “We started working on the “Durufle Requiem” just after the first of the year, and we’ve put a lot of time into it so far,” he explains. “We’ve gone through all of the sections of it, and it’s really going well. Now we’re working on polishing our performance and getting it exactly how Andrea would like it.” Besing is particularly looking forward to singing at St. Mary Catholic Church. “The venue always adds something to the performance, especially with more religious pieces,” he says. “A church is a wonderful place to sing the “Durufle Requiem,” because that’s where it was meant to be performed.” And according to Besing, a good crowd should be on hand to hear some of the tri-state’s finest singers. “Our reputation has really been growing the last several years. More and more people are becoming aware of the EPC’s talent and variety.” To audition for the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus, contact Chorus Manager Kimberly Bredemeier at 812-425-5050 or kbredemeier@evansvillephilharmonic.org. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings from September through April; additional rehearsals with the orchestra are required during the week of performances.
The show starts at 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit evansvillephilharmonic.org. St. Mary Catholic Church is located at 613 Cherry St. in Evansville, 812-425-5050.

Evansville Massage Specialists by Thomas Ellis
Sports-related injuries are incredibly common these days. So many of us under-prepare and over-exert,
W
resulting in pulled, strained or torn muscles. Thankfully, help is just a phone call away.
ith a team of massage therapists averaging 10 years of experience, Evansville Massage Specialists (EMS) has the expertise to both heal and, most importantly, prevent the nagging injuries that sideline so many of us. Regular massage sessions at EMS allow the body to train harder and recuperate faster, keeping you in the game and performing at your peak. EMS co-owner, Carrie Schierbaum, is not at all surprised by the growing number of sports-related injuries. “Parents are starting their kids off in athletics so early. Their muscles are torn up by the time they’re 20,”
she says. “If you don’t take care of your body, your body is not going to take care of you. That’s why you need to come to professionals to keep your body healthy.” And as studies have shown, basic, static stretching is simply not enough to avoid injury. The good news is that EMS not only cares about your physical health but also your financial health. “We want to make massage affordable,” Schierbaum says. “We can do spot treatments – you don’t need to book a whole hour. And if you come once a month, you get 15% off all of your appointments. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get yourself fixed up.”
THE TEAM: Kelley Adams, Jenna Alexander, Misty Bugg, Nick Halwes (Active Release Therapist), Tammie Hosick, Carrie Schierbaum, Jonetta Sharum, Margie Smith and Marci York.

Unlike the majority of massage businesses, EMS has but one focus. “We really want people to understand that we’re not a spa,” Schierbaum explains. “We don’t do all that fru fru stuff – we only do massage, and we’re very serious about it.” EMS is located at 971 S. Kenmore Dr., Suite A. Call 812-401-3767 for an appointment.

JASON WATSON FOOD CRITIC
Archie and Clyde’s
8309 Bell Oaks Dr. Newburgh, IN 47630 (812) 490-7778 To Newburgh we go! With plenty of space for family dining, I head to the bar full of TV’s and regulars. One of the owners chose the evenings vittles and thankfully, because this menu ranges from cheese fries to catfish nuggets, from salads to pizza to pot roast. First on the bill, is Danny’s Deli Famous Gyro. Love, Love, Love gyros, and no let down here. Classic slices of roasted beef and lamb, well-seasoned with oregano and garlic, fresh off the spit, top a warm pita. Sided with tomato, onion and fresh cucumber dressing, these puppies make a perfect lunch or dinner. A few bites and pictures later, here comes heaven. By heaven, I mean a ½ slab of baby back ribs. I’m thrilled to say, I would put Danny’s ribs up against anyone. House-smoked, then thrown to a hot grill and slathered with house-made BBQ sauce. The fall-off-the-bone meat had a lovely pink hue showing off the delicious smoke. Charred to perfection on the grill, and then topped with a smoky, slightly spiced BBQ sauce. With a little fresh cut, creamy cole slaw, and crispy battered French fries, I was thrilled. I mean yum! We all know I dig a good pizza, and here it is again, a really good pie. The Mountain of Meat was the finale, and mountain it was. A crisp, cracker crust piled high with Italian sausage chunks, little meatballs, ham, bacon and pepperoni. A sweeter tomato sauce and mozz/prolone cheese blend, finish this circle o’ meat. Not sure I ever realized how many good pizzas were in our area, but Archie and Clyde’s pie will certainly be towards, if not the top of your list. The whole menu could end up that way if you’re not careful.
Harbor Bay West
4428 N. 1st Ave. Evansville, IN 47710 (812) 423-0050 It had been quite some time since I had last visited a Harbor Bay, and the changes I found were a pleasant surprise. While tweaking the menu, and getting back to the basics - such as fresh cut steaks, and using quality, fresh products - this experience was much better than the first. An absolute abundance of dishes were brought out this evening. Starters were plump shrimp cocktail - fresh, never frozen - oysters on the half shell, and a crisp-grilled Mahi salad. All the seafood was clean and tasted as it should, of the sea. House-made cocktail sauce set off the shrimp and oysters. The grilled Mahi had a nice char and went very well with the balsamic dressing and bleu cheese chunks accompanying the salad. Next, let’s get down on a fresh cut, 8 oz. Delmonico steak. Juicy, well seasoned, a wonderful char to just the right temp, this would have been plenty. But why stop there? May as well have a light fillet of Orange Roughy. Also grilled right, the orange, ginger glaze was slightly sweet with a pinch of heat, and took this mild fish a step higher. Heck…now we should probably have a Harbor Burger right? Right! An 8 oz. freshpattied burger, topped with cheddar cheese, plenty of crisp bacon, house-battered onion rings, with a sweet smoky BBQ sauce, was a monster. But a monster, I felt, I must conquer… And I did. Finally let’s have some crab legs, ya know, just for fun. To sum it up, Harbor bay isn’t just a seafood joint these days. There’s plenty for all to choose. Mike says, “Eat Happy, Be Happy…” I did, and I was!

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Pizza Inspiration at
Deerhead Sidewalk Cafe Known for their doubledecker pizza (two layers of thin crust, double cheese and double ingredients), Deerhead prides itself on being Evansville’s first and only restaurant to offer this type of specialty pizza. They also pride themselves on the variety of pizzas that they offer for the veggie lover and meat lover alike. Their pizza varieties include vegetarian delight, Mediterranean, meaty blues, bacon double cheeseburger, the Big Buck classic and more. Pizza is an American classic that first appeared with the arrival of immigrants from Italy during the late 19th century. It was understandably very popular in larger cities that held large Italian populations. Pizzas can be purchased from restaurants, bought in the freezer aisle of the grocery store or made from scratch. Finding the right mix of ingredients and tools are imperative though, in creating the perfect pizza pie. There are many keys to making the perfect dish. You should always make sure that your oven is hot. 425 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimal temperature to bake pizzas at home in order for your crust to brown quickly. Using a pizza stone to cook your pizza is preferable, and dusting your work surface with cornmeal will help you gain a crisp finish. When making a homemade pizza, it is preferable to make your own dough so that your pizza cooks-up crispier, and refrigerating your dough overnight helps as well. Going back to finding pizza inspiration though, Deerhead manager Dante Hines’ favorite pizza is the Mediterranean because, “It’s a very delightful clash of flavors (mozzarella cheese, feta cheese, garlic, spinach, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, green olives and onions). The Mediterranean pizza speaks for itself, even amongst the non-veggie lover.” Deerhead’s top seller is their deluxe supreme pizza. The deluxe supreme is also Hines’ favorite because it has ingredients that most customers enjoy. Ingredients that he describes as the “most common in the pizza industry that most people want (mozzarella cheese, sausage, pepperoni, black olives, onions and mushrooms).”
On the wild side, Hines shares that their most unique pizza is the Mexican Melt Down. He says, “It’s a very innovative approach to satisfy the eccentric palette of most. [It includes] the spiciness of our homemade chili, with toppings like jalapenos, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, onion, tomatoes and black olives, [which] gives this pizza a place of its own, especially for the daring pizza lover.” Hines describes their craziest pizza that they’ve ever created as the time “when a customer asked me to use my imagination and make his pizza. So, I used my imagination to the tenth power, so to speak. The final cost… for that request was $30, but the reaction was a smile, thumbs up, and a ‘Damn!’” Hines also shares that, “We want each customer to feel as if he or she is at home… minus the laundry. We want our customers to feel the greatness of their dining experience. Overall, we set ourselves apart from others by having fun entertaining the customers with a personable approach. We strive to treat our customers like family.” —Nikki Davis To find out more about Deerhead, visit them online at www.deerheadpizza.com or find them on Facebook.

What ' s ‘ Cookin
Tin Fish

T
ucked-away off Jennings Street in downtown Newburgh, you will find one of the most dynamic restaurants in the area serving-up fresh seafood eats to the masses.
Whether you are stopping in for a quick lunch, family meal, dinner and a drink with friends or a bite to eat with someone special, Tin Fish in Newburgh consistently offers quality catches in the freshwater and saltwater variety at whollyreasonable prices. “The biggest thing that I focus on in my restaurant is quality. It’s all about the quality with me. The food, the staff, everything,” said Owner, Morgan Castillo. To achieve this quality, Castillo pours gobs of her time, her heart, mind and soul into the restaurant. Moreover, she makes a point to be as personable and as accommodating as possible with her guests. In a recent online review, a customer side-stepped the Tin Fish name completely calling the restaurant “Morgan’s place.” If a customer likes a certain type of fish that isn’t on her menu but she has access to it, Castillo has no qualms in making it happen. Just tell her when you need it. The greatest part is that Tin Fish’s already expansive menu is always evolving. So, patrons have the opportunity to try many different aquatic offerings.
Next came my entrée, featuring a new fish to the menu, the Barrmundi Sandwich with Lemon Caper Dill Aioli. Barrmundi (also called Hake) is similar in taste and texture to the North American bass. The barrmundi Castillo obtains are farm-raised in Connecticut. The star of the show for me was the play of flavors between the lemon from the Aioli and the subtle, slightly smoky fishiness of the barrmundi, which was grilled. The citrus galvanized the fish flavor and tacked it right to my taste buds. At the same time, neither flavor was noticeably muted. Pickles, lettuce and tomatoes added great contrast to the texture of the smooth and tender barrmundi. Alone the taste was light-bodied, but still held a mid-level natural flavor even with its seasoning. A truly amazing sandwich! For dessert was Carrot Cake. It held a bright but comforting flavor. The cream cheese-based icing was so smooth and decadent. It played perfectly with the sponginess of the cake. The cake reminded me of zucchini or banana bread but a bit more airy. It was loaded with carrot strips, adding lots of bright, fresh flavor and a pleasant extra crunch, along with the walnuts that coated the outside curve of the cake. A glorious way to end a meal! So, with the Lenten season and warmer weather approaching, make Tin Fish your stop for any occasion! —Nick Durcholz

Now, to the food…
My starter was something new to Tin Fish Morgan had created for Lent (her busy season) which she dubbed Shrimp Fritters with Hot Sweet & Sour Sauce. With the sauce, the fritters had such a luxurious texture and sweetness they could be on the dessert menu, but the shrimp was not lost in the doughy, sweet goodness. It actually provided a nice break in the sweetness with an ever-so-mild taste of the sea. Peas and corn helped to add depth to the texture. Without the sauce, the personality of the fritter changed dramatically into a savory ball of awesomeness. They are a powerful, fun marriage of seafood and carnival fare with multiple facets of flavor and texture. A great way to wake the palate but be careful, because you cannot lay off these treats!

Curled with Curiosity:
An Interview with Allison Pottinger of the USA Women’s Curling Team by Nick Durcholz
Hailing from Eden Prairie, Minn., Allison Pottinger is mother to two young girls, graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Oshkosh and Milwaukee), Consumer Insights Manager at General Mills, wife and Olympic curler.
I
t is fair to say Pottinger is more than proficient at keeping her footing in life, and on the curling sheet. 1984 was the beginning of her participation in the curious sport. Some of her many career highlights include: Wisconsin Women’s Champion (1996), Karuizawa Challenge Cup in Karuizawa, Japan Champion (1997), Wisconsin State Championships Champion (2000) and member of the first women’s team to win a gold medal at the world level in the World Curling Championships (2003). To add more rocks to the house, she was awarded USA Curling Female Athlete of the Year in 2012 and 2008. Pottinger’s skill led her to represent the United States in her first Olympic appearance in 2010 in Vancouver.
Pottinger was kind enough to let News4U share in this exciting time in her life, right after their seventh session round robin loss to Denmark. News4U (N4U): Aside from the exposure you had to curling through your family, what else drew you to it? Allison Pottinger (AP): I think my favorite thing about curling is it’s a really nice combination of an individual and team sport. If I blow it really, really bad, the girls can’t make it great, but if I’m close enough, they can make it outstanding. The teamwork between the four to make things happen, they really are team shots. Every once in awhile, there is an individual shot where somebody just throws it so good there’s no way it’s going go bad but… It’s a close knit team, smaller than a hockey team or something like that so, the relationships are really, really tight and individually, you really have to perform as well. N4U: How have you prepared yourself before each match? AP: We get to the rink about an hour and a half before each match because we have practice a half hour before. So, we have about an hour pregame… And on the way in, we’re talking about the team and who we are playing, what they like to do or not, if they have any tendencies – that kind of thing. We’re in our preparation time period, and then we’ve got to go… 25 minutes or so to change, get ready. If anyone needs any sports medicine they do that then, and get taped if you have a bad ankle or wrist sprang. And then, we have our own 10 minute practice part of the game. Then, the opposition has 10 minutes. And so, we watch them get a hang of the ice, read the speed of the ice, that kind of stuff… Then, it’s essentially go-time.

N4U: What do you think the future of curling is in the United States? AP: You know, it’s growing a lot. It has a lot of grassroots enthusiasm and people behind it… Getting on television certainly helps the sport. When people try it, they really do love it, and love everything about it… I definitely see it growing. Honestly, our performance here, we could’ve done a better job to showcase things and stay at it a little longer. Nothing better than to be in the gold medal game on TV in the US but – you know what – I’ve simply come to want that it’s going to get better, and I think our teams are going to get stronger and stronger. N4U: Part of being on the team, you kind of have to be an ambassador for your own sport right? AP: Absolutely, that is one of the best parts!

2nd Annual
Night of Vision Gala at the
Vineyard
L
ooking for an evening of fine food and good company, or just looking to participate in a charity event and/or silent auction? Then stop by the Night of Vision Gala at the Vineyard held at the Old National Events Plaza (formerly the Centre) on March 15 at 5 p.m. for an unforgettable experience. This event benefits the Evansville Association for the Blind. Not only do they want to raise money, but they also want to raise awareness. In fact, all of the proceeds go toward their services which include visiting elementary and pre-schools and giving eye examinations. There will be a wine tasting and silent auction when the doors open. Then, at 7:30 p.m. a lovely meal which includes a starter of a wonderful salad with berries, a main course of steak and vegetables, and for dessert, almost everyone’s favorite: chocolate. The dinner will be followed by a live auction. For both auctions, they offer a wide selection of items to bid on. The silent auction includes a $200 Tracy Zeller Shopping spree, many baskets filled with wines, restaurant gift cards and a weekend getaway to French Lick. The live auction will feature a set of Titleist golf clubs, a mink coat, jewelry from Goldman’s, a timeshare getaway and a framed Michael Aakhus print. —Sarah Dyson

How Many Smokefree Casinos are in the U.S.? By Bronson Frick, Associate Director, Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights
M
ore than 500 smokefree casinos and similar facilities operate in 20 states and U.S. territories, protecting workers and patrons alike. Gaming workplaces in Ohio, Illinois, Maryland, Delaware, Maine, New York, and those coming soon to Massachusetts, are all smokefree indoors for worker health - part of the growing standard for smokefree indoor air across regional gaming markets. We know that casinos can be successful while maintaining smokefree indoor air to protect worker health. Evansville should join this trend. Horseshoe Cincinnati,a three hour drive from Tropicana Evansville, is 100% smokefree indoors. They saw revenue jump in January despite the bad winter weather. If you haven’t visited the vibrant Horseshoe Cincinnati yet, I encourage you to take a road trip to see what a smokefree casino workplace is like. Smokefree indoor air is simply a non-issue there. People who want to smoke can easily step outside to a smoking patio, then come back inside. Most importantly, the gaming staff in Cincinnati doesn’t have to get sick – or die- from breathing secondhand smoke at work. The science is clear. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. It contains over 7,000 harmful chemicals, at least 250 of which are known to damage health, and can cause lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke. People with
asthma and pregnant women are especially at risk. Even sophisticated casino ventilation systems do not address the serious health hazards of secondhand exposure. According to the U.S. surgeon general, 100% smokefree workplaces are the only effective method to prevent the health hazards of secondhand smoke. Even 30 minutes of exposure to secondhand smoke damages heart vessels. More than 50 studies in the United States and abroad have collectively found roughly a 20 percent reduction in cardiac and other health-related hospital admissions (including heart attack and stroke) following the implementation of smokefree workplace laws. The issue here is protecting health and saving lives. A recent study funded by the National Cancer Institute and published in August in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation found that in 2006 after Colorado implemented its smokefree law, emergency calls in Gilpin County dropped by 20 percent, except the number of calls originating from Blackhawk casinos, which were exempt from the law. The study’s findings are made doubly powerful with data showing that in 2008 after the casinos lost their exemption when the Colorado legislature voted to include them under the law, ambulance calls originating from Blackhawk casinos dropped by nearly 20 percent as well. Exempting casinos from complying with smokefree regulations results in more people going to the hospital in ambulances. Evansville should look past the tobacco industry myths and join the smokefree casino trend. Casino workers deserve the same right to breathe smokefree air in the job as anyone else. —Bronson Frick Associate Director, Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights www.smokefreecasinos.org

“Songs of the Boardwalk: The Music of Years Gone By” at the Evansville Civic Theatre he Civic Theatre has a reputation for putting on shows that are both highly entertaining and impeccably produced. Last November’s “Nobody Lives Forever: Celebrating 50 Years of 007” was a great example of the quality we’ve all come to expect. A striking collection of Bond themes played out over two evenings of musical intrigue, the show started the 2013-2014 Concert Series off in style. All the classic songs that have inspired such passionate devotion to the 007 soundtracks were flawlessly delivered. And speaking of music that moves the soul, the Civic Theatre will present “Songs of the Boardwalk: The Music of Years Gone By” on March 28 and 29. This next installment of the Concert Series will feature some of your favorite Civic Theatre performers taking the stage to celebrate some of the best music ever written. According to Managing Artistic Director, Chris Tyner, the musical theme will be songs from the early 1900’s to 1920’s – similar to the soundtrack of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire series. The atmosphere will be that of a speakeasy, a cool, retro feel unlike any previous Civic Theatre production. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are only $12 per person. To reserve a seat, call the Civic Theatre Box Office at 812-425-2800 or visit evansvillecivictheatre.org to buy and print tickets. —Thomas Ellis
T
The Civic Theatre is located at 717 N. Fulton Ave. in Evansville.

anna Williams, a National Educator for Paul Mitchell, and her staff are there to give you the most relaxing and enjoyable experience that they can with up-to-date trends and techniques. The salon specializes in creative coloring and Hanna herself assures that the color placement will be exactly to the customer’s specifications. You will more than satisfied with the results! Ciseaux also gives their customers the option of indulging in a lather lounge where stressed tresses can be trimmed away with ease. Your next appointment can even be made from here! They also have an aesthetician in the building - for those who aren’t familiar - this is a certified skin-care professional. Now, I don’t know about anyone else, but all of those wonderful options sound super relaxing! However, they are a hair-only spa, but there is no reason to panic! Williams knows and utilizes make-up artist and skin specialist Kana L. Brown, and she - in the words of Williams - can hook you up with the look that expresses your true self.

F
or one night each year, it’s not only acceptable to “boo” the men in blue, it’s encouraged. Yes, everyone’s favorite charity boxing match is back for another round at the Ford Center on Saturday, April 12. The seventh edition of Guns & Hoses once again pits local police officers versus local firefighters – the best of the best brawling in the ring for the sake of improving the lives of children with disabilities in the community. The annual event is just one of many charitable efforts organized by 911 Gives Hope, a non-profit corporation formed by local police officers, firefighters and paramedics. To date, 911 Gives Hope has raised over $160,000 for local children’s charities. The group is also committed to maintaining Kids Kingdom in Evansville and continues to work towards the goal of building a group home in the area for people afflicted with Prader-Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Guns & Hoses is the ultimate (friendly) grudge match between the two departments with both pride and bragging rights on the line. The main event features 15 exciting boxing matches, three rounds each, and the team with the most victories takes home the coveted Guns & Hoses championship belt.

eing someone else is something many of us dream about, however for Kevin Roach, it is actuality. He has gotten to be many people, including Dracula. Born in Mt. Vernon, Roach started acting in community shows at the age of 10, landing a small speaking role in Auntie Mame. “It was always something I enjoyed as a hobby but it wasn’t until my senior year of high school until I decided it was all I wanted to do,” Roach said. He starred as Dracula in October when the play was put on by Last Minute Productions. He said it was one of his favorite shows he has done recently. Roach said he typically gets cast a villain, and said the darker roles are usually harder to shed after it is over. “I think it’s the gravelly voice that does it, plus I can be scary as hell when I need to, but I want to play the hero once, and in a big way. I watch shows like The Walking Dead and I think: ‘I want to play that guy who sacrifices himself to save the little girl, or the guy with the gun that shoots the monsters down to save everyone,’” Roach said. Roach is usually pretty steady on projects. His stage work has all been volunteered and he has even dabbled in film work. “I love film, as a medium,” Roach said, adding that it is a different approach to acting and is much more accessible for the public to view his work. Once a play is over it’s over. A film is around forever, he said. Roach has 10 credits on IMDB and was in a web series, called “Book of Dallas” that has garnered 2.5 million views online.

“When you ask me to be myself in front of people I find it difficult. If you ask me to be somebody else, it is easier,” Roach said. In addition to acting, Roach has also directed plays for Merely Players, a theatre company founded in Owensboro, Ky. as well as partnering up with Evansville Civic Theatre’s Underground at the Annex. “I don’t consider myself a director, though I like to whet my appetite now and then with it,” Roach said. “I actually have a short script called “This Is Only a Test” that I’m attempting to turn into a short screenplay and will subsequently direct in the near future.” Roach said he respects the craft and, though he does want to be respected for his work, he doesn’t seek fame. Roach said he wants to move to bigger things. Roach said his core belief is that, “acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances,” a quote from the acting teacher Sanford Meisner. Roach encourages anyone who wants to be an actor to recognize experience is key. Whether it be taking a class or getting involved in local theatre. Roach said he is always learning and building his craft and that he learns by doing. “This is my life… This is my everything,” Roach said. —Justin Law
soundboard Sean Fuller
T
he envy of professional drummers everywhere, Evansville native Sean Fuller is currently on tour with country music’s hottest group, Florida Georgia Line. Playing on the big stage is nothing new for the 41-year-old musician whose resume includes stints with household names like Luke Bryan, Justin Moore and Craig Morgan. But ironically, Fuller never envisioned a career as a country music drummer – even when he moved to Nashville in the late 90’s. No, from the time that he was a kid playing in pep bands, there was just one objective: to rock like his heroes. “I grew up on a wealth of stuff, but Kiss changed the world for me because of the pure energy,” Fuller says. “At the time, country music was the farthest thing from my mind.” His introduction to drums came courtesy of local legend, Greg Tuley, who was charged with navigating Fuller’s short attention span. But the two connected enough to get the basics down – an invaluable foundation of knowledge. ”It made a world of difference as I went through school and on into playing with my first band, Southbound,” he says. As his skills improved, Fuller developed an aggressive, animated playing style that stuck out. He was a fixture on the Evansville scene for years, drumming for several bands including Toadstones and Devious. The money was good, but Fuller was unsatisfied. “I just had something in me that wanted to get out and try being
a small fish in a big pond rather than playing the same clubs in Evansville over and over,” he explains. Next stop: Music City. Fuller arrived in Nashville with seemingly modest expectations. “I figured that even if I didn’t get to do what I wanted musically right away, I would still be able to make good money like I did in Evansville,” he says. The reality was far different. “Nobody knows or cares who you are – you’re fighting just to get noticed,” he says. As an attention grabber, Fuller played in a kilt and sported a colorful Mohawk. Slowly but surely, word spread about a crazy drummer rocking the bars on Broadway. Still holding down a day job to support his dream, Fuller’s networking and showmanship finally paid off with an opportunity to drum for up and coming country music star, Craig Morgan. It wasn’t the rock he aspired to, but it paid the bills – and led to an even better opportunity with another rising star, Luke Bryan. That partnership initially lasted two years before Fuller got sidetracked with a heavier project called Vulpine. Though fun, it never quite got off the ground and Fuller rejoined Bryan’s band before jumping ship again. He spent the next five years touring with Justin Moore, an up and down experience that ultimately left Fuller drained. “I had accomplished pretty much everything I set out to do – I played the Ryman, the Grand Ole Opry and appeared in music videos,” he says. “If everything had ended at that moment, I would have been okay with it.” Then he got a call from the manager of Florida Georgia Line. “It was right up my alley – the band has elements of both country and rock and they treat everyone like family,” he says. And it’s a very successful family, indeed. With huge hits like “Cruise” and “Stay,” the band is riding high at the top of the charts and selling out venues across America. Now that Fuller has finally found his musical sweet spot, he wants to give back to the place where it all began. “I’ve got plans to do speaking engagements and motivational presentations locally. I want to help put Evansville back on the map.” —Thomas Ellis For more information, visit seanfullerrocks.com

As warmer weather arrives and households begin spring cleaning, take the opportunity while airing out and scrubbing your living space, test all of your smoke alarms. Manufacturers of smoke alarms suggest you change out every 10 years.

uring winter months, minor electrical problems tend to go ignored, and spring cleaning offers a chance to check annual safety concerns and schedule an appointment for repairs. Reitz Electric Service Inc. has been a local fixture since 1986 offering residential, commercial and industrial services for the Evansville area. The experienced and qualified electricians at Reitz Electric Service Inc. can resolve any electrical issues, large or small, from a simple receptacle to a complete building, remodels and troubleshooting, parking lot lighting to neon repairs and underground locating, just to name a few.
Even when electrical systems seem to be in order, while moving large pieces of furniture or dusting behind appliances check electrical devices in the home for damage or exposed wiring that may need repairs. • Keep the stove and oven clean but remember to clean the exhaust hood and duct over the stove. • Test all your GFI breakers or GFCI receptacles monthly. • Vacuum refrigerator coils to eliminate buildup, which can affect efficiency and fire safety, and leave room behind the refrigerator for air to circulate. • Check for excessive vibration when the
washing machine or dryer is operating, which can put stress on electrical connections. • As the cold weather passes, have the furnace cleaned and inspected by a qualified technician. Snowy weather may have been the excuse for putting off electrical repairs such as dead outlets, flickering lights and expired fuses, but spring is the time to rejuvenate the household with more than soap and elbow grease. Make a checklist of electrical problems before calling Reitz Electric Service at (812) 423-3371 or visit www.reitzelectric.com.

Left Hand Brewing Sawtooth Nitro
Daniel Knight • 3
Here’s a cool variation on an otherwise traditional theme. Sawtooth Nitro is classified by the brewers as an All-American Ale. Note that is very important that one pours it hard in order to force the nitrogen out of solution in the beer and create that lovely, thick creamy off-white head that rests on top of the clear copper-colored ale. The nose is subtle but nice. Mostly malts and faint spiciness. This medium bodied brew is balanced with caramel, malt, a tinge of nuttiness and just a hint of hops. I’ve had the CO2 version of this ale in the past and actually prefer it. The Nitro makes it creamier. Some fans will prefer that.

Breckenridge Brewery Ophelia
Daniel Knight • 3.5
An American Pale Wheat Ale that pours up a cloudy yellow-straw color and produces a lovely, airy one-finger head. The aroma is malt, bready, yeast and mild hops and spices. The ale tastes well balanced and distinct. Subtle malts give way to fruity, floral hop notes. There’s also earthy pine and wheat nuances that reveal themselves as one focuses on the subtleties within this brew. This all culminates in a very mild and drinkable kind of way. I can see this one becoming a wheat lover’s favorite.
Paul Bragin • 5
This beer pours a straw-colored liquid in a wheat beer glass and leaves a thick white head that only disappears with the final sip. The scents of fruity hops like grapefruit dominate the nose. The hops scent vanishes and is replaced by wheat and a light banana taste when drinking the beer. This seasonal beer would be an excellent choice for someone new to craft beer. It pairs very well with pizza.
A hard pour in a pub glass leaves a deep amber colored beer with a thick white head. The nose contains balanced elements of both hops and malt. When drinking the beer, the malty sweetness comes through first on the tongue, followed by a hoppy aftertaste that stays on the palate. Have fun trying different food pairings like classic bar offerings with this one. This could be another good choice Jabez Martinez • 3.5 for a craft beer novice. This beer poured a cloudy, golden color. It had a funky aroma to it I couldn’t put my Jabez Martinez • 4 finger on. I did like the yeasty flavor it had, This beer is a clear amber and a little bit but could also taste the citrus and hops. I heavy on the red tint. Just remember to read did like the unique bottle but was hoping for the instructions how to properly pour this something a little more from this beer. beer. (Pour straight down or a “hard” pour) I enjoyed watching the carbonation form and create waves in the glass. It was pretty sweet and the nitro end of the beer seems to add a little creaminess to the flavor. Follow us on twitter @

Cutters Brewing Half Court IPA
Daniel Knight • 4
Cutters is an Avon (near Indy) Indiana brewery. Half Court IPA pours up a cloudy, chunky, unfiltered beige-orange color with a one-finger, off-white head. Clearly this is an unfiltered ale with lots of chunks of sediment. The aroma is citrusy with a good balance of hops and malts. The taste follows the aroma mostly with piney hops, malts and an earthy kind of taste. This IPA is somewhat non-traditional in that it carries more maltiness than many but I feel they pulled it off well. I’ll be having more of this in the future.
Paul Bragin • 4.5
A white head forms atop a medium golden liquid for this beer. The pungent aroma of citrusy grapefruit from an abundance of hops fills the glass. The hoppy citrus notes continue when tasting the beer, becoming more present on the tongue after drinking the beer, along with some pine flavor coming through. This would pair with spicy food quite nicely. Cutters Brewing always puts out an excellent product, and hop lovers will definitely want to try this one.
Jabez Martinez • 4
This was another cloudy, amber-colored beer. I enjoyed the crispy flavor it had. Not bad at all for an IPA. I liked that the alcohol was bumped up a bit at 6.3 % and that it was made in Bloomington. It is good to see local breweries put good products out.
Redhook Audible Ale
Paul Bragin • 4
The thin white head that forms on this beer evaporates quickly, leaving behind a light amber liquid. The scent contains a balance of malt and hops, but the hops seem to come through a little bit more. The same can be said for the taste, which is refreshing and could be an excellent thirst quencher. Grab a six pack of Audible, your best friends, whatever snacks you can find and enjoy it when the game is on.
Jabez Martinez• 4 Daniel Knight • 2.5
Here’s a pale ale that pours up a slightly hazy, light honey color and produces a lively one-finger head that fades away quickly leaving a little lacing. The nose is faint but I sense, malts and a little bit of bready ale yeast aroma. As usual, taste follows aroma with pale malt and a slightly fruity flavor. I have to say that I’m not impressed with this ale. There’s nothing wrong with it and I wouldn’t turn it down but… I wouldn’t likely order it with so many better choices. That said, it’s light and drinkable.
This is a nice, cloudy amber-colored beer. I could taste a little bit of hops flavoring without it being too overpowering. I could also taste other fruit flavors as well. Overall, it was a well-balanced beer. It was pretty good and something a little different than the average Red Hook.

LEE BRICE
at the Victory
by Thomas Ellis
Nominated for New Artist of the Year at the upcoming 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards in April, Lee Brice is coming to the Victory Theatre on March 27.
T
he South Carolina native has had a remarkable last couple of years, scoring three number one singles off his 2012 sophomore album, Hard 2 Love. But in truth, Brice’s ACMA nomination is a bit of a red herring as he’s been a fixture on the Nashville music scene for years, writing and cowriting songs for some of country music’s biggest stars. His 2007 collaboration with Garth Brooks resulted in “More than a Memory,” the first single in the history of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart to debut at number one. Brice’s success as a writer - not to mention his good looks - inevitably piqued the interest of several labels, and he eventually signed to Curb Records in late 2007. Three singles were released, including “She Ain’t Right,” “Happy Endings” and “Upper Middle Class White Trash.” While all charted modestly and a full album seemed the logical next step, the label put Brice on the backburner, waiting until 2010 to debut Love Like
Crazy. But the strategy paid off as both the album and the title track hit the top ten. In fact, the song “Love Like Crazy” hung around so long on the charts that it broke the record for consecutive weeks in the top 100 – 56 in all. Brice’s time had truly arrived. Like all great artists do, Brice rose to the occasion with the release of 2012’s Hard to Love, cementing his reputation as a tremendously gifted songwriter. As the singles “A Woman Like You,” “I Don’t Drive Your Truck” and the title track all soared to number one, he received more and more accolades, including multiple ACMA, CMA, CMT and Grammy Award nominations. Despite the well-deserved pats on the back for past work, Brice is already planning a new album and just recently released “I Don’t Dance,” a powerful ballad that showcases his deep croon and emotional touch. Brice will perform it and all of his biggest hits at the Victory Theatre in March.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open 6:30 p.m. For ticket information, visit victorytheatre.com.

USI Screaming Eagles Running Series:
7K Run of Luck
S
ponsored by Romain Subaru, USI has had nearly 700 people sign up for the races in the Screaming Eagles Running Series, and expect more. “There’s no other series in this area, you can go to Indianapolis, you can go to Louisville, but we finally are the first ones to put something together like that in the Evansville area,” Glenna Bower, Associate Professor of Kinesiology & Sport, said. Bower said the 7K Run of Luck on Mar. 15, starts on campus and goes out onto Schutte Road and Broadway. The 10K Spring into Fitness on Apr. 12, will start on campus and follow the Burdette Park Trail and back. “I’ve heard a lot of runners say it’s a pretty tough 10K,” Bower said. A big component of the series, Bower said, is that students are implementing it. “This is like an event management club. They will take this funding and they travel for professional development, but they also started a scholarship fund and they’ve raised almost $40,000 from these races,” Bower said. The deadline to sign up for the 7K Run of Luck is March 8 and the cost is $20. Any registrations after are $25. For the 10K Spring into Fitness, the deadline is April 5 and the cost is also $20. Late registration also costs $25. —Justin Law

Ya betta WERK!
M
ARCH 2014 marks an eventful 55 years Barbie has been on the scene. Constantly a woman of evolution while Madonna was still in diapers - Barbie needs to be celebrated for blazing a trail.
to do anything besides be a housewife, Barbie was out working! Don’t wait for someone to tell you something is “IN.” Set your own path!
Love her or hate her, Barbie has been a force to be reckoned with.
Speaking of working, master re-inventor, Barbie doesn’t ask anybody permission… she just does it. From doctor, to astronaut, to veterinarian, Barbie has over 150 careers under her belt. She defied gender roles, while driving a pink Corvette. Not only does she choose her own occupations, Barbie has also represented over 45 nationalities. If there is something you want, go after it!
Although many people like to whine and criticize about certain aspects of the Barbie legacy, I see the positive. There is a lot to be learned from the empire. I believe we could learn a few VERY valuable lessons from this woman of action! 1. Never follow the crowd. Always set the trend. Barbie has always been ahead of the pack. Seriously, who remembers trying to squeeze pants up on their barbies? She was rocking skinny jeans before they were even a “thing.” Before it was socially acceptable for a woman
2. You can do and be whatever you want.
3. Use your voice. Okay, so technically, Barbie doesn’t have a voice. But, Barbie has used her influence to raise awareness and funds for numerous organizations. Use your platform for whatever it is you want to share with the world.
Apply these lessons this month and Spring Forward into Fabulousness! Agree or Disagree? Join the discussion at Tuesday Talk with Kana. —Kana L. Brown www.kanabrown.com According2kana@gmail.com

The Weinstein Company From director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) comes the true story of underdog Paul Potts (Tony award-winning James Cordon). From adolescence to adulthood, Paul has been bullied and ridiculed for being different. He works as a shop assistant, yet his true passion is opera. With unwavering support from his wife Julie-Ann (Alexandra Roach), his mother (Julie Walters) and his best friend (Mackenzie Crook), Paul struggles to live out his dreams as a performer despite the overwhelming odds against him... Eventually, Paul’s talent and passion for his art shines through. He becomes the winner of Britain’s Got Talent and gets to live out his longtime dream as an opera performer. Simon Cowell and Colm Meaney co-star in this emotionally-charged and heartwarming and funny film about somebody who never gave up, despite being told that his dreams will never materialize.
March 28th Noah
Paramount Director and co-writer Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan) has always had a knack for creating entertaining and emotionally-driven movies based on seemingly ordinary human characters. Said characters often fall into an introspective and psychological downward spiral. Noah seems to be no exception... Only now, we are greeted with an epic, biblical powerhouse of a release, something quite different from the lower budget, high-quality masterpieces Aronofsky has delivered consistently over the years. Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind) is Noah, who, after witnessing visions of the apocalypse, builds a boat to save the others around him. Director Darren Aronofsky has always been one to battle the studios on grounds of artistic control... He is a man who pays attention to detail. Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson (the Harry Potter movies) and Jennifer Connelly co-star.

Ender’s Game
Summit/ Lionsgate Based upon the Nebula award-winning, science-fiction novel by Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game was directed by Gavin Hood, who also wrote the screenplay. We follow the shy, yet gifted and surprisingly tactical, Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) through a series of tests in space initiated by the International Military. Ender is among many children being trained in preparation for the inevitable second alien invasion to befall Earth. Harrison Ford (returning to the science fiction realm, in perfect form) plays Colonel Graff, a seasoned military leatherneck who makes it his own mission to make sure that Ender lives up to his full potential as a commander. Dazzling visuals reminded me of the greatest science fiction epics. Die-hard fans of the book may have their own objections as they always do, but the difficult task of taking a bestseller and translating it to film was perfectly done in my opinion.
Escape Plan
Summit/ Lionsgate Take two aging action heroes (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sly Stalone) and throw them in a maximum security prison together... And they both have to help each other out, if they both want to make it out alive. That’s all you need to know in this action flick. Both Stalone and Schwarzenegger said that they wanted to make the movie many years back, but due to scheduling conflicts, it never materialized. Arnold and Sly share some moments onscreen that I wish I could have witnessed while the two were in their hey-day, but seeing it now, both are more mature and have an awareness of who they actually are... and the chemistry is great. This movie toys with many of the “prison movie cliches” in a good way, and doesn’t pull any punches when delivering the goods. Much better than I thought it would be! —Russell J. cd reviews Broken Gold
Residency at Hundo Beach End Sounds 3.5/5
By all accounts, Residency at Hundo Beach shouldn’t even exist. After forming Texas-based Broken Gold in 2008, singer Ian MacDougall suffered a serious bike accident that left his skull and body in sorry shape. Recovery was painfully slow (a process addressed on the band’s 2011 debut album, Recovery Journal), but somehow MacDougall lived to tell – and sing. The six songs on Residency prove that his writing talents have mostly recovered, too, bearing the band’s British post-punk and shoegaze influences but also taking cues from American alternative music. The result is a slightly less abrasive, moodier sound. “Teeth” wastes no time illustrating the band’s British influences with a Peter Hook bass-line and Echo and the Bunnymen guitar washes, but the band sounds most comfortable on two later tracks, “Green Grass” and “Let Go.” The influence of classic American alternative bands like the Replacements and Dinosaur, Jr. is particularly apparent in MacDougall’s lazy vocal delivery. The EP ends on a rocking note with “Shoulder,” a release of distortion and pent-up energy that reconciles both the British and American influences and perhaps points to the direction of the next full-length. In the meantime, Residency at Hundo Beach is an interesting transition.
Diane Cluck
Boneset Important Records 3/5
Quiet since 2006, Virginia-based Diane Cluck is back with Boneset, a collection of skeletal songs that picks up where she left off with Monarcana. Her voice (a sort of exaggerated, American take on the Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan) is the polarizing focal point of the album; but regardless whether you love it (Florence Welch, for instance, cites Cluck as a big influence) or could live without it (me, for example), it certainly doesn’t overshadow her multi-instrumental talents – guitar, piano, harmonium, zither, percussion and toy accordion – or her lyrical grace. The production on Boneset is downright minimal. Cluck creates so much space in her songs that at times they seem in danger of simply disappearing (“Not Afraid to Be Kind” is a prime suspect). This ultra-delicate approach is quite affecting but also flirts with pretension. When it works (“Content to Reform,” “Trophies” and “Maybe a Bird”), it’s quite striking. But tracks like “Sara,” “Why Feel Alone” and “Draw Me Out” go overboard on the introspection and vocal eccentricities, testing the limits of self-inclusive songwriting. Boneset may scare off – or simply bore – a large percentage of digital age listeners with its quaint, acoustic production, but I imagine that Cluck has a small army of hyper-devoted neo-folkies in her corner.

Spirits and the Melchizedek Children
So Happy, It’s Sad Self-Released 4.5/5 Atlanta-based Spirits and the Melchizedek Children’s music is every bit as idiosyncratic as their name. But while there’s often a fine line between being arty and annoying, So Happy, It’s Sad never grates. It may deviate from the script yet it never loses the plot – each song pulls you in with unorthodox arrangements, shifting textures and, ultimately, a beautiful melody at its heart. SATMC gets plenty of help walking the tightrope, enlisting additional players to flesh out the band’s sound with strings, horns and percussion. Right from the outset, So Happy, It’s Sad soars. “Song Bird’s Grave” is a quasi-instrumental that serves as an anthem of sorts, representing a perfect marriage of SATMC’s psychedelic influence and art rock leanings. Vocalist Jason Robert Elliott briefly appears to sing the title of the song before receding into the atmospheric haze of the band’s secret weapon: the Roland Space Echo. This famous piece of old school technology gives the album a sense of otherworldliness – an almost unsettling detachment that makes “Lullabies for War” and “Lost & Found” sound like a no man’s land between dream and nightmare. “Past, Present, Future” is the nearly 10 minute, unavoidable conclusion. Indeed, it plays out like a trip through time, edging towards oblivion as the slowmotion guitars give way to the rush of drums midway; a squall of feedback takes over and vague pandemonium ensues. Sounds like the future, all right.
As Animals
Self-Titled Atmospheriques 4/5 Drawing on contemporary influences such as Florence and the Machine and Feist as well as older bands like Portishead, French duo As Animals creates electronic music with more than just a beat and a hook – there’s an intellect at work, too. Multi-instrumentalist Frederic Grange and singer/ songwriter Zara Desbonnes stretch out musically across the 13 tracks on their self-titled debut, moving from the orchestrated, 007 feel of opening track “As Animals” to the bluesy, simple arrangement of “Extraordinary Machine” to the closing ballad “Nighthawks Dropping” with relative ease. They have clearly learned from the masters and used their education to develop a sound that is somehow both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Desbonnes has a strong, distinct European voice that is flexible enough to handle the changes in direction. She sounds particularly confident on opening track, “As Animals,” a fantastic pop song with a dark, yet completely infectious chorus that plays perfectly off the reggae-tinged verses. “Burn Like a Fire” slowly gathers steam, starting with a series of jazz chords on acoustic guitar and a melodic vocal line that is uniquely French. Again, the chorus turns away from the light with tolling bells and an air of melancholy. It’s the exact opposite of what you’d expect and wholly refreshing. —Thomas Ellis
cd sidebar Mainland
Shiner Fandango/ Fierce Panda
Hailing from New York, the band Mainland has released an EP, called Shiner. This album is both upbeat and gets back to the roots of punk rock from the 60’s and 70’s. Mainland’s four track album sports some rather irregular beats that still made me want to get up and move. My favorite song on the album was its title track, “Shiner.” The lyrics are catchy, the music really builds and it’s a song I could really move to - you know - if I could. The album’s release date is Feb. 25.
Wild Throne
Blood Maker Brutal Panda Records
Wild Throne, the band formerly known as Dog Shredder, has recorded its first EP, Blood Maker. The band has a different sound, which ranges from progressive rock, metal, to a point on the musical spectrum that strongly resembles jazz. The song “Shadow Deserts” is very fast-paced and has a lot going on sound-wise, specifically guitars, drums and synth sounds, reminding me of a photon laser shot. Blood Maker will be released Mar. 4.
The Unsemble Self-Titled Ipecac Recordings
The Unsemble will drop its self-titled album on Mar. 4. The album, originally recorded in 2012, is purely instrumental. The songs range in sound, from very calming and easy going, to more stressed and unsettling. For example, the song “Improv 4” is rather unnerving, and almost gives the feeling of sneaking around in the dark, in a place one isn’t supposed to be. The guitars, keyboards, drums and electronics really work well together in this piece.

Lightwire Theatre: The Show at the Victory
by Jessie Hellmann
Puppetry, narration, dance, music and creativity all come together for “Lightwire Theatre: The Show,” hot off a 2012 America’s Got Talent appearance.
T
he show appears 7 p.m. March 11 at Victory Theatre in Evansville, as part of a 15 show tour. “This show really caters to all ages,” said Eleanor Carney, who directs and acts in the show with her husband, Ian. “We say that, but with this one, there’s really something for everyone.” Eleanor and Ian began working with light wire in 2006 after 20 years of professional ballet dancing. Their first show premiered in 2007. Lightwire performances revolve around a dancer outfitted in various colorful wires, intended to make the audience focus on the movement of the dancer rather than the dancer his or herself. “We were fascinated with how the wire could erase the dancer, and we started experimenting with different characters and creatures,” she said. “We found this medium where you could really bring forth the movement in the purest form because you can only see the movement, not the person doing it.” She and her husband have spent much time studying movements of the various creatures they’ve performed as in the show, focusing on how to bring them to live in believable ways, she said. “We would never consider ourselves puppeteers, but we sort of are because we’re bringing characters to life,” she said. There’s no exception with the couples newest show,
“Lightwire Theatre: The Show.” “This show is our fourth show, and it’s our biggest one to date,” she said. “It’s sort of exciting for us to get to do something on a larger scale.” “Lightwire Theatre: The Show” follows a clan of birds, including a perfect and adorable baby girl, and a unique boy who’s beak turns different colors. He was banned from the tribe for being different, Eleanor said. “In the end, the baby boy bird is basically seen as a hero because he can save the day, and he uses his beak powers as good and defeats evil,” Eleanor said. Eleanor, who plays the baby bird, and Ian, who plays the evil sorcerer, build everything on the set. “We spend most of our time at Home Depot, Sports Authority and Walmart looking at everything sideways,” she said. “We use everything from skateboard wheels to fishing and plumbing supplies.” With the age of movies, video games and TV, she said theatre sometimes becomes an afterthought, but Lightwire performances fix that. “We bring in much more of an experience than a show, so when we can get people excited about theatre and bring in the younger generation, that’s exciting for us,” she said. “We really try, from a music perspective, to use the whole range: electronic dance to pop to more classical music, so our mission is to get people excited about coming to the theatre.”
Tickets for Lightwire Theatre: The Show are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including victorytheatre.com, the Victory Theatre Box Office (Day of Event ONLY) and the Ford Center Ticket Office. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • March 2014
