Goebel Realty: Apartment Living

I

n modern society we have more choices than ever in real estate. We can choose to live in a house, an apartment, a condominium, a cottage or even a home on wheels or on water. These are among many other options. Some people opt to live in the hustle and bustle of city life because of their lifestyle or convenience of proximity to their job and others choose to commute in exchange for the tranquility and open space of living in the countryside. For all of us, where we call “home” comes down to two basic choices: whether to rent or to buy. There is a growing trend among Americans in recent years to choose renting over the commitment of buying their own place and many are praising the benefits of its affordability, conveniences and ease of freedom to move elsewhere to fit their changing lifestyles. When I asked renters around the Tri-State area why they felt renting was the better choice for them their responses were enthusiastic and immediate. One of the main perks of renting given by those asked was never having an unexpected expense to worry about. Lynsey Hart of Vincennes, Indiana stated, “When you rent you don’t have to mow the lawn, fix any maintenance problems such as leaky pipes or pay for pest control. Besides not having to worry about upkeep of the property, there are no property taxes to pay every year. Sometimes with renting utilities such as water, trash and sewage, and even cable and internet can be included.” Some people who’ve seen both the renting and owning sides of living highlight the mobile benefits of renting. Mark Luzader of Evansville, Indiana remarked, “As a former renter and recent seller of a home I can tell you one big advantage of renting is mobility. Trying to sell a house in this market takes 6-9 months on average and while you’re trying to sell you’re watching a lot of nice homes get sold!”

4 | August

2012 • www.News4UOnline.com

There are other renters who are motivated for financial reasons and for the freedom to relocate easily as well. Amanda Miller of Illinois states, “Mostly, I can’t even think about working the down payment for a home, but I also appreciate the fixed cost with renting and the lack of responsibility for maintenance and upkeep. Mobility is somewhat nice, too.” Many people looking to rent are unsure of where and how to start looking. With all the choices, pros, cons and uncertainty of which part of the city or town to begin looking, a great place to seek help in today’s world is at your local realty company. In our area, Goebel Realty, Inc. has terrific options to fit anyone’s needs that include students, assisted living, affordable housing/apartments and luxury housing/ apartments. The extent of their services for renters include the North, East and West sides of Evansville, Newburgh and Vincennes, Indiana, as well as Henderson and Owensboro, Kentucky. —Julie Buente

The Cake Boss Buddy Valastro photo credit timessquaregossip.com

Bakes Evansville An Offer We Can’t Refuse

New Jersey’s Buddy Valastro is a simple man of refined and delicate taste in cake, cake, and more cake.

T

he bakery owner and star of TLC’s “Cake Boss” has turned his pastry wizardry into a television empire, capitalizing on the crucial reality TV must-have - a big, eccentric Italian family. Unlike many legs and faces of the ultra addicting and usually depressing phenomenon known as reality TV, Buddy wasn’t born into the industry. His father worked hard to build up the Hoboken bakery with only the support of his relatives, eventually passing the torch onto Buddy. “I told my father years ago that I would do everything I could to make Carlo’s Bakery a household name,” said Valastro in the midst of a busy week. “Even today, I am still working to make Carlo’s bigger and better for our fans.” The show is currently neck deep its fifth season, and fans are clawing for some Carlo’s more than ever before. Hoboken locals can find lines curling around the block, filled with customers new and old, hoping to grab if only a pastry or two from the famed bakery. For those who don’t want to snack on a five-tiered butter cream cake, (looking more like a recently excavated rose column from the depths of antiquity) patrons can select from a large menu of desserts, including cookies, biscottis, fruit tarts, and cannolis. When asked about the source of Carlo’s success, Buddy believes that it is the business, not the television show, which pulls at the hearts and taste buds of customers. “We roll out the best everyday for our customers. That’s what we’re about,” said Valastro. “Cake Boss” runs on challenges, from spectacularly themed cake requests to delivering items up to 60 miles

away. Buddy, the fam, and their 100+ employees are a part of what is much more than a full-time job. “I love to be challenged,” boasts Valastro. “The best challenges are those I’ve never tackled before.” Rumors have stirred on the internet that the Carlo’s team is planning on making all of their baking sensations available nationwide in the near future. When pushed for more details, Buddy politely dodged giving away future surprises. “I’m really looking forward to sharing what Carlo’s has to offer with our fans across the country,” said Valastro. For fans who can’t wait to pull the delectable goodness from their TV sets and onto their plates, Buddy will be touring across the country, offering tips, demonstrations, and a Q & A session. The chef will make an appearance in Evansville on August 5 at the Victory Theatre. Wanting a sneak peak of what Buddy will have to say, I asked him for some advice for our readers who are hoping to open their own restaurant or bakery. “Be ready to give 200%, because 100% is not enough when you’re opening your own business,” said Valastro. As a humble but desperately eager cooking enthusiast, I closed our conversation with some guidance from Buddy on how amateurs can improve their baking skills. “I love it that more and more people are interested in baking,” begins Valastro. “The thing to know is, not every cake needs to jump, spin, and move. The #1 piece of advice would be to practice, practice, practice. No one gets it perfect the first time around.” —Jacqueline Greenberg

Ski Day on the Ohio:

Musicfest & Bierstube

“W e should have taken a lot more photos in the beginning,” says owner of Ski Pro Shop Roger Sobotka while shuffling

through memories and about 200 pictures of Ski Day’s past. Original organizers of the annual summer party, Sunny Beach himself Rick O’Daniel, and Media specialist Jim Staley are joined by Mike “the Sandman” Sanders from 103 WGBF, National Guard Recruiting and Retention NCO SSG Quentin Hornby and Tiki Bar and OV Sport owner and operator Oscar Velez . Old friends and new, are gathered around a coffee table reminiscing about boats, bikinis and the good times they have had planning and enjoying Ski Day. This year’s event is anticipated to be one of the biggest parties of the summer. Instead of just the usual Sunday bash, event planners have added Friday and Saturday events at Marina Pointe. “It is 103 GBF’s 25th year as a station and our 25th year as partners planning this event. We have been very fortunate to work together. Ski Day started because Roger had skis to demo from vendors in the Chicago area. We started off with about 20 boats in attendance and it has grown into hundreds. There was one time during the early 90’s, that someone counted 900

boats. Now you can’t ski if you wanted to. There are too many boats,” said O’Daniel. From noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday August 12th, Ski Day will take over Newburgh Beach with the original World Famous Bikini Contest, King of the Beach Competition and hundreds of boats and watercrafts of all kinds. Whether you attend by water or by land, there will be plenty of entertainment, contests and prizes. “The very first year there was a big discussion about prizes. We weren’t sure how we were going to give them away. So we decided that it would be a good idea to put ping pong balls in a bucket. Somehow the bucket fell off the boat. Someone went in and retrieved every one of our ping pong balls. We still do giveaways that way,” said Staley. Just as years past, the prizes will be O’Brien wakeboards and skis from East side Marine. This year The World Famous Bikini Contest boasts a prize package worth $1,000. O’Daniel also matches that prize package and donates the proceeds to the Tri-State Food Bank. “I have seen the good that they do with their donations.

The Tri-State Food Bank really does help a lot of people and turn their donations right back into food and services that benefit this community. They are one of my favorite groups of people.” Another group that falls into a list of O’Daniel’s favorites is the Army National Guard. “They are family to me now,” O’Daniel said. For the past six years, members of the National Guard have participated in Ski Day. “We usually arrive on Saturday night so that we can help set up and we camp that night. This year we have a lot of giveaways as well, things like life jackets-shirts and backpacks. This is one of the biggest events of the year for us,” said Hornby. “We love being part of it.” Ski Day festivities will kick off on Friday August 10th at Marina Pointe at the Tiki Bar with a Bierstube. Partygoers can experience a hog roast, Homemade Bikini contest qualification round and performances by Gonzo’s Toybox, Keith Vincent and Adam Blythe beginning at 4 p.m. “We are very excited to debut the Homemade Bikini Contest this year. There are a lot more elements to it, than the usual bikini contest,” said O’Daniel.

All contestants must design their own creative bikini using whatever items they choose. It must cover the contestant’s body like a normal bikini would, but should be unique by using items that the contestant creates themselves. “While researching the contest, we have seen a few bikinis that have been really interesting. One contestant had used goldfish bowls, with live goldfish swimming as their top. I am looking forward to seeing what people from the tri-state come up with,” said O’Daniel. The final round will be Saturday night with a 1st place prize of $750, 2nd place winning $150 and 3rd place taking home $100. Bud Light will also be giving away a Port Paradise cruise to one lucky attendee. The Crowd, Zion and Joe’s Garage are set to perform Saturday night as well. “Everyone should attend Ski Day, just once. Even if you hate yourself the next day and trust me; you will hate yourself the next day. It is totally worth it,” said Sanders. —Brooklyn Solis Ski Day is free. Tom Constanten: Classically Trained, Grateful and Very Much Alive

T

Born in New Jersey in 1944, Tom Constanten would become a part of one of the most influential bands of the hippie movement.

he band in question is the Grateful Dead. Still a massive musical farce to this day the Dead command an entire sub-culture of fans and have inspired a plethora of musicians performing many different genres of music. Prior to his involvement with the Grateful Dead, Constanten became a member of the United States Air Force in 1965. He never navigated the skies but he would be flying high soon enough, as he was recruited as the seventh member of the Dead in 1968. He tickled that ivory until it peed its pants in three of the Dead’s albums starting with Anthem of the Sun featuring “New Potato Caboose,” “Born Cross-Eyed” and “Alligator.” This all came to fruition when Constanten met Dead member Phil Lesh while they were studying composition with Italian modernist composer, Luciano Berio at the University of California, Berkeley. After Constanten graduated in 1967 he traveled abroad to study with German composer Karlheinz Stockhuasen and French composer Pierre Boulez. This month Constanten will be playing alongside Terrapin Flyer at Doc’s Sports Bar in Evansville. Constanten was gracious enough to take time to chat with News4U. News4U (N4U): When you first joined the Grateful Dead did you think that the band would become the icon that it is today? Tom Constanten (TC): We sort of knew we were onto something. We didn’t visualize in detail the form it would take, but we knew we had lightning in a bottle.

N4U: What does playing music mean to you personally? TC: Oh my gosh, I’ve been doing it so long it’s like breathing or talking or thinking. I don’t separate it; it’s been there for so long. I made my debut playing piano with an orchestra backing up a composition of my own 51 years ago last month. N4U: So, do you enjoy still enjoy it as much as you did back in the day? TC: Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don’t. Sometimes you are on tour and you have a couple of gigs that sort of suck, not enjoyable. Then you some sets that a really electric. N4U: What drew you to the keys (keyboards)? TC: I played violin in the school orchestra, when I was in high school. I was just getting better faster at the piano. There are certain natural tropisms or attractions people have for certain activities. This can apply to a very wide level of interests; charters, accounting, the ministry – it was like that. If there is anything that appeals to me [about piano] is the fact that I know of no other discipline where the path is as well charted. N4U: How did your classical background benefit your style? TC: It gets rid of the block between thinking about something and doing it. I can pretty much, think in real time and respond which is important in improvisatory music. You have to be able to respond as quickly as if you were conversing with words, you have to get onto something immediately because the moments pass by so quickly. —Nick Durcholz

J

ames Wiesneth of Indiana’s Wiesneth Law Offices faces the often heartbreaking task of sitting down with people who are buried in student loans and are looking for a way out. The firm, which specializes in bankruptcy, has students with often 60 to 70 thousand dollars in loans or more and are looking to get them discharged. Unfortunately, the chance of discharging a student loan is nearly impossible. James spoke with me of how it’s “no big secret” that the Federal government makes a direct profit from the interests of private student loans. And of course, banks and other private institutions make a tremendous profit off of these interests as well. Legally speaking, there is a virtually impossible option of proclaiming “undo hardship” against paying the loan. Yet the standards that meet this term are often so grueling, and have such severe expectations from the quality of life and financial disabilities that the debtor must be under, that it is rare to find someone who takes “undo hardship” to court. “You’re talking about a client who has money problems, and how many clients can financially say ‘you know, I want to pay you money to go through the litigation process to discharge this student loan debt,’” said Wiesneth. “You’re talking about thousands of dollars, and what debtor has the ability to do that financially?” As I discussed with James, student loan debt is now the most common type of debt in America, surpassing medical and credit debt. Students continuously take the gamble of putting themselves through an expensive education in an economy that cannot make promises to anyone, no matter the mental and financial hardships they have endured. More and more, I find peers of mine with inspiring abilities and creative minds telling me that they are putting their true talents on hold, and go to college to wander aimlessly

16 | August

2012 • www.News4UOnline.com

through general education in the hopes of finding a more practical calling. Often times, these students spend even more money on the extra time they spend in school unsure of what they want to do with a degree. It is this kind of trap. The need to survive, clashed with an uninspired mind burdened in debt, which can make education only added stress to our young people instead of being the fantasized “golden opportunity.” “The first real question becomes: are you going to school just to go to school, or is this something that you really see yourself doing as a career?” said Wiesneth. “I think someone needs to say ‘Is this the type of career I want to be involved in or do, is this going to be marketable when I get out, is this a degree I’m going to be able to make money from and support myself from?’” With questions of introspection such as these, it’s clear that school is not longer a means to toy with our Renaissance sensibilities. To be more specific, our simple and honest desire to experience higher learning for the sake of learning, explore art for the sake of art, or study for the thrill of knowledge. They are no longer financially practical reasons for going to college. It is this shift in our educational world that has now turned college into a cold and calculated industry. Students no longer have the luxury of figuring out their ambitions as they go along. The churning machine of degrees and certification demands a plan. Likeable or not, lest the free-spirited young people of our time become crushed under the weight of debt and financial crisis. —Jacqueline Greenberg

House of Bluez W

hen most people think of back to school shopping their thoughts are of getting school supplies and buying outfits or uniforms for grade school and high school kids at the same old general supply and department stores. But what about the droves men and women who descend upon Evansville every Fall to attend the University of Evansville, Ivy Tech, Harrison College, ITT and the University of Southern Indiana that are looking for something interesting, different and fashion-forward to wear back to school? Luckily, we have a boutique for just that here on the eastside of Evansville and it’s called the House of Bluez. When you walk into the House of Bluez you’ll immediately feel welcomed and instantly know that you’re in a unique, cool place that will be fun to shop. The décor in the shop is ultra chic and modern, with the trademark blue of denim on the walls and clean, easy to navigate displays of various clothing, accessories, jewelry, and of course, jeans. In the center of the spacious 2,400 square foot boutique is a comfortable lounge area with plush black couches and chairs, a cozy rug and coffee table and even a children’s play area, so your little one can be entertained while you shop at your leisure. Owner Jodi Merrick, who grew up locally in Mount Vernon, she said knew she wanted to open her own shop after working at The Buckle in college. Her concept for the House of Bluez, a play on words so as not to be confused with the famous music nightclub House of Blues, became a reality in the summer of 2007. Still going strong, the boutique has become a place known for one on one attention to the customer that creates a personalized shopping experience. Besides being a place for “destination shopping,” the House of Bluez offers brands and lines of men’s and women’s clothing that can’t be found at Eastland Mall or any other place in the area. Some of the designer and hard-to-get clothing/denim lines you can find there include True Religion, Paige Premium Denim, Earnest Sewn, William Rast, Joe’s and Seven For All Man Kind. In addition to the diverse selection of jeans and outfits you can discover there are several handmade artisan accessories and jewelry lines available. One such line is Puravicle Bracelets, a very colorful wax-based line of mix-and-match, stackable bracelets that are made by hand. Each one purchased helps provide full-time jobs for local artisans in Costa Rica. A new bracelet line recently launched at the store is Chan Luu Arm Candy, one that Merrick is very excited to be offering. Another unique handmade product available and just in time for Fall is a line of scarves by Donni Charm, which were created by an Indiana University alumni. The scarves are one of a kind and feature actual charms at one end that range from the Tree of Life to various animals. —Julie Buente The House of Bluez is located at 333 Metro Ave. with hours Mon. – Fri. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat. 10am – 5 p.m. (812) 401-2583. H

e doesn’t look a day over 50. He will tell you that it is because of the good bread. Since the early 90’s, Lorenzo (Larry) Minor has been sharing his passion, expertise and hand-made bread products with the Tri-State. Inspired by a trip to Europe, Lorenzo realized that there was something more to life then the current path of sales he was pursuing. “I spent the center part of my life as an insurance salesman. The best part of the job was that it afforded me the opportunity to travel. My life was completely changed. I wanted to live simply and pursue my passion of bread,” said Minor. Lorenzo has spent the past 20 years honing his baking skills by training with the Bakers Guild, the CIA in Hyde Park under Professor R. Calvel, and with Alan Scott of California. He has been a head baker for bakeries in Florida and France. He has also baked and consulted for Edgewater Grill and Vecchio’s Italian Market in Newburgh, Indiana. “I can take a bag of flour and turn it into any bread product. What I do is not considered fine pastry. It is considered peasant. It is a lost art form and it is disappearing. I do not use anything that is pre-made or frozen,” said Minor. Lorenzo started the Real Bread Co. in 1992, with a location on 4th Street. “When I opened the restaurant, I wanted it to be a place that was not just known for our bread and food, but also for our personality. I wanted to get to know people on an individual basis. I not only knew what they liked to eat for lunch, but I

knew when someone in the family was sick and when there was a birth or a wedding. I know people by their first names. My customers are my friends,” said Minor. As business continued to grow, Lorenzo added a new French Oven and 16 employees. They were serving nearly 100 vegetarian lunches daily. In 1997, the Real Bread Co. relocated to Hebron Avenue. While Lorenzo’s is under new management, his name remains. Lorenzo continues to consult and teach baking skills through his company Artisan Bakery Consulting Co. “A friend built an oven of his own in his backyard. I spent over two hours with him, teaching him how to bake. I follow the Johnny Appleseed mentality, that you should share your knowledge. I have worked with a dozen bakers, and I will gladly work with a dozen more,” said Minor. From the adobe oven in the backyard of his east-side home, 40 to 50 loaves of bread are made to sell at the Farmer’s Market on 2nd and Sycamore Street in Evansville. He and his wife Janie also create sweet treats with names like Heavenly Marriage and Vampire’s Dream. They use local ingredients and update menu items based on seasonal fruits and vegetables that they purchase from other local farmers. “I believe that everything should be within walking distance. The baker, the butcher, and the gardener. We should be easy to access. That is what makes a community thrive.” —Brooklyn Solis Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • August 2012

J. Gumbo’s

What’s Cookin’

1211 N. Tutor Lane.• Evansville, IN Evansville has many Mexican and Hispanic restaurants, so when I visit one for the first time, (812)-473-2951

I

n the culinary universe there is always a deepseated feeling of satisfaction and pride when you come across a restaurant that is truly authentic. This feeling is multiplied ten-fold when this place is unique as well and soon, right on the tail of those two previous feelings, an immense sense of loyalty forms in a patron that gets stronger and stronger the more they visit this particular restaurant. This loyalty is apathetic to how complex or simple the restaurant is; you just know it is exceptionally tasty. J. Gumbo’s Cajun and Creole Cookin’ Co. beckons this loyalty. “It’s authentic. The founder is from New Orleans so these are actually his mom and grandma’s recipes that he has kind of recreated. The ‘J’ in J. Gumbo’s stands for jockey gumbo. [The owner] used to race here at Ellis Park and at Churchill Downs. He saw the market here for Cajun food and that is how we came about,” said Nick Doerter, General Manager of J. Gumbo. The J. Gumbo menu is a painter’s palette of spice alternatively blended together or used separate to create vibrant flavors bold and balanced. “One of the biggest misconceptions I battle is that [when] people see J. Gumbo’s, they see Cajun and Creole and they think spice. I’ve got something for everybody. I’ve got spicy, I’ve got

mild, I’ve got no spice whatsoever, I’ve got vegan and vegetarian…I truly have something for everybody,” said Doerter. J. Gumbo’s menu is diverse. It caters to many different tastes, as I soon experienced first hand. For hot-heads the Voodoo chicken is a great choice. It has a bold, savory flavor teamed with a spice that builds slowly in the back of the mouth then drops its full thermonuclear payload. The Bumblebee stew is a light, sweet concoction with corn, onions, tomato and accented with a sweet and spicy butter sauce. The sweetness is countered by hearty black beans. To deepen the flavor experience Doerter recommends mixing the Bumblebee stew with the Voodoo chicken for an uncanny sweet and spicy flavor. Somewhere in the middle of the road lies the Drunken chicken. It is J. Gumbo’s best seller and it is easy to taste why. The Drunken chicken boasts a sultry mix of spice and garlic flavor followed by a murmur of heat. This dish is quite the exotic temptress. For those herbivores out there the Creole Ratatouille is ideal. It is tender zucchini, squash, okra and bell peppers swimming in a flavorful, savory broth. Imagine a heart veggie soup with a southern flair and a profound flavor profile. The Cajun a Creole classic gumbo is very pleasing as well. It has a low to moderate heat note with a clean but hearty consistency and subtle earthy flavor. According to Doerter, J. Gumbo’s is expanding to different areas of Evansville and may even open a Newburgh location. This comes as smooth, tumbling sax notes to the ears, as all of the tri-state area should be made aware of J. Gumbo’s flavor bouquet. —Nick Durcholz

J. Gumbo’s is located at 1211 N. Tutor Lane on Evansville’s east side. They also offer gluten-free options, appetizers, wraps and po’ boys.

food

localchefspotlight While working as a trainee for the FBI in 1968, Kerry Magee couldn’t have dreamed that he would one day be serving famed entertainers and presidents his own culinary creations. Back then, Kerry had a distinct calling to cook, and enjoyed serving a buffet-style brunch to his dorm mates in the FBI. Even so, Kerry didn’t dive fully into his intuitive grasp of the culinary world; working over the years as a deputy sheriff, shoe salesman and store manager. All the while, his cooking interests began to cultivate into a personal passion. Yet Kerry had never attended culinary school, and through the eyes of destiny, it would take a profound, professional opportunity to put him at the same standards of his contemporaries. Enter Pierre Bitters, a man who Magee calls “more than a chef.” The Czechoslovakian culinary master took Kerry under his wing as an apprentice in 1976, and became the defining figure in Magee’s culinary career. “He owned restaurants, he was a ladies’ man, he knew how to be a maitre’d,” said Magee. “If you were sent out at night to be the maitre’d, you’d kiss the ladies’ hands, talk to them, do tableside cooking.” Through Bitters, Magee learned how to communicate to diners, connect with them, and prepare foods that aligned with their most desirous tastes. Learning under Bitters became like a realworld school, working day and night while being introduced to new techniques inside and outside of the kitchen. In his own kitchen at The Centre in Evansville, Kerry Magee is the executive chef of seven years. His assistant chefs, many of who have graduated from Ivy Tech, learn from him in a style similar to his own past. “Hands-on learning is the best,” Magee reiterates to me. He aims to give his chefs the technical knowledge they need, without underestimating their creative potential when its time to get work done. Kerry believes instilling a sense of freedom is essential to the culinary experience, which goes hand-in-hand with the creative process itself. A former painter, Kerry likens creating a gorgeous platter of textures and colors to the painting process. “You got to see it in your head before you put it on the plate,” said Magee. “You have to be creative.” At the backbone of Kerry’s style and skill is his attention to detail and willingness to go the distance to satisfy his customer’s taste buds. When first settling down in Evansville, Magee had the task of creating a meal plan for country starlette Dolly Parton as her tour passed through town. Wanting her to feel at home with Southern comfort food, Magee prepared her

a menu of sweet potato pie, squash casserole, cornbread and President’s Bean soup and much to her delight. The singer wrote him a flattering letter of thanks and invited him into her trailer to thank him further, having felt truly gracious for his caring and selective meal choices. Magee has owned restaurants in cities all over the world, and has had similar experiences with entertainers such as Steven Segall and President Jimmy Carter. It is this care and service that Magee strives to bring to customers at The Centre. “Every chef, every student, needs to go the extra mile,” he tells me. A well-seasoned, well-traveled executive chef, Magee is the answer for diners looking for a professional, dynamic, and customized culinary experience. —Jacqueline Greenberg

5K Obstacle Run

V

iking Assault is the modern reincarnation of the Viking lifestyle, at least minus the murder, thievery, and generally leaving other peoples’ lives in shambles. Viking Assault Coordinator, Adam Keister explains the importance and uniqueness of Viking Assault to the community of Evansville. “There are other events like this around the country but nothing locally. A lot of people who like to do it look for a variation in running that is off the beaten path. There are a lot of runs but nothing like this one.” This event encompasses all the unadulterated joviality without all that stuff that could land you in a maximum security prison for a wizard’s age. Fortunately, all this boasting is no exaggeration. The Viking Assault event is essentially planned around a 5k obstacle course which offers participants a host of challenging terrain and various obstacles such as a cargo net and tire field to conquer. “We kinda hope that [Viking Assault] will not just get the people who are out there running anyway because we get those people, but the people who also just want to have fun in their community without traveling and to maybe encourage them to also get out, start exercising. Exercising can still be fun if you do it right,” said Keister. Punctuating each of these obstacles and geographical features is a massive mud pit to indulge the care-free youth in all. This year will see the addition of new challenging obstacles as well as return of the more manageable obstacles for the more casual assaulter. “Anybody can do it; you could walk this course and do everything if you wanted to. We tell people if you come to an obstacle you don’t think you can do, feel free to walk around, it’s not that big of a deal,” said Keister. Imagine, you are at poised at the starting line with hundreds of others all dressed in active and eclectic garb. The sun is attacking your flesh with salvo after salvo of ultraviolet ordinance and every sinew and muscle fiber in

your body is tensed up and quivering ever so slightly. The race begins and you are off like an abused greyhound. First, you encounter a field of tires positioned neatly before you like a fresh batch of black doughnuts from Crispy Crème, they look glazed but then you realize it is only the intense heat reverberation off their rubber surface. You take them on, legs moving up and down with the momentum and speed of pistons. You clear the tires, only to find yourself face to face with the first gelatinous mud pit. Here, you roll around a bit using the mud to cool your body like an Indian elephant. What comes next is but a minor challenge, unless you fall of course. Unwinding before you is a flaxen freeway; a path made solely out of hay bails. The footing here is tricky, but you tread lightly careful not to slip and end up with a side full of hay stems sticking out of you like acupuncture needles. Following the hay bails, your eyes track up a sixfoot tall barrier but you don’t stop, jumping at it like a with the grace of a howler monkey, your hands latch onto the top of the barrier and you begin pulling yourself up to a brief perch on top and instead of making a slow descent you vault right off the top to save time. This is a race after all. You stick the landing and begin running again but in the midst of the excitement you realize the heat is wearing on you and your chest feels like the boiler of a locomotive. You look ahead, eyes struggling to

focus but what you see is the Promised Land; it is another mud pit. You belly flop right into the center of it, feeling the cool mud underneath

the surface envelope you. Truly, the All-father Oden is smiling down upon you. If this doesn’t get the endorphins flowing then it is quite possible you are a corpse. Even senior citizens get excited and are turned slightly Scandinavian by this event. “Our last event, we had two ladies in their 70’s come out. One of them brought their husband with them to help them over some of the obstacles. They brought their own personal photographer, they walked the entire course, they had the slowest times out there but they had a blast,” said Keister. The physical aspect of Viking Assault is all great and good but this year the event’s organizers have gone to great lengths to make sure all those in attendance get to celebrate in the must rip-roaring and resplendent way possible. In such a way, that the party would make a real Viking shed a tear of joy. This effort begins with free and easy parking to watch the race and to enjoy the entertainment. This year the biergarten will boast a VIP section for the most serious pillagers. Budweiser will be providing the beer and there will also be games of corn hole to be played. There will be people on hand to cook up some Viking worthy grub including hot dogs, hamburgers and barbeque. Along with some culinary mystery that Keister was reluctant to expose, and what is a Viking themed event without a little bit of mystery? On the same note, what is a party without music? McFly: Back to the 80’s will be headlining the event and the party will also include performance by Kurt & Rod. When asked what he wants to see people take from Viking Assault Keister said, “I wanna see them show up, get muddy, get dirty and have a little fun. I want them to know somebody in this community, including themselves, wants everybody to stick around, wants everybody to have fun and want[s] them to know at least once a year they can count on a place to gather up with their friends, do something a little different, have a little fun and go home with a huge smile on their face.” —Nick Durcholz

O

ccasionally, a deep festering passion blossoms into a mecca of opportunities to share with the community. For Brent and Suzie Pace, the last twenty years has taken them down that road. The couple run Collector’s Carnival Show Promotions, and hold annual shows featuring a diverse array of antiques dealers from all over the country. When their now large-scale show was only a small side-business, the two toured the Midwest, developing relationships with as many different and colorful of dealers as they could find. Brent and Suzie managed to invite collectors and dealers from all over the United States, including the tri-state, Alabama, Tennessee, Michigan and more. Both informed antique collectors and carnival passerbys can be sure to find their one of a kind piece at the show. Many dealers who sell their items yearly believe the Collector’s Carnival is the best market of its kind in the Midwest. Frequently sold items include advertising, pottery, furniture, jewelry, china, books, coins, dolls and toys, to name only a few from the Carnival’s massive collection. The next shows of 2012 will take place on August 11- 12, and October 27-28. They are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the weekend. Show-goers will be able to find nearly 100 dealers at the Vanderburgh Co. 4-H Center on the north side of Evansville. “I always love the organization of the show,” said Laura Wilderman, a dealer you will be sure to see at the show in August. “They make it fun to shop! Plus, there’s always something good to eat! Suzie and the dealers make it fun!” —Jacqueline Greenberg

The collaborative effort between two animals, specifically white-headed capuchin monkeys saddled to border collies dressed in the appropriate rodeo attire, is the creative efforts of professional rodeo cowboy, Tim “Wild Thang” Lepard. He has been a part of the rodeo circuit for over 28 years and began his career riding bulls and eventually progressed into bull fighting. Lepard has also a member of the PRCA since 2004 and was crowned the Mesquite Champion Bullfighter in 1988. After a few injuries side-lined him, he began to work with animals. The rodeo will begin at 7:30 pm; however fans can come early at 6:00 pm for a free Behind the Chutes Preshow. If you have ever wanted to sit on a bull, take a free pony ride or meet a cowboy, this would be the perfect chance to do so. There will also be contestants on hand to teach the proper way to lasso a steer, barrel racing and the crazy antics of the always lovable rodeo clowns. —Brooklyn Solis

M

usician and freelance consultant Dave Huffman has lived the semi-charmed life of a successful musician and he recognizes its true importance. Huffman is the former guitarist of the band Jacob Freely but has taken time away from his passion for it to spend more time with his family. The musical seed was planted in young Dave’s mind and soul much like it is in any other musicians. It was an organic process, three people who were very close to him used their appeal, faith and support to water and fertilize that seed until it began to put down strong roots and mature. “[The first was] a buddy of mine that broke his leg and started playing guitar. I saw him playing and it just looked insane fun. My dad for nurturing that passion and getting me my first guitar. [Then] my wife who ultimately gave me a nudge shortly after our first date. I’d been playing at parties and things and she challenged me to do something more with [music],” said Huffman. At the peak of his musical career, Huffman was quite the mover and shaker. “After playing parties and things for a year or so, my brother and I were picked up by an entertainment agency, recorded a demo and hit the road. We played 150-175 shows a year, released 5 albums, had our own festival, a lil’ merchandise line, stole a spot in a movie and made a genuine career out of playing music. Not that we were all that great, but we understood how to navigate the business and we loved it so much,” said Huffman. Huffman mainly plays guitar and it is clear how much the instrument means to him. “The guitar, especially acoustic [has] pulled me through so much over the years, mainly through songwriting. It has also taught me more about life and business than my MBA or any amount of school I’ve been through.” said Huffman. Huffman also has a very eclectic musical style that you would be hard-pressed to find in the area. It is a result of pure audio amalgamation. “I just call it Roots Pop. I’m in that MTV generation that listened to every style of music, so a lot of it fell into my songwriting. My personal songwriting style has evolved so much too. It’s been deliberately poppy at times, country and sloppy at others,” said Huffman. Huffman has performed in Evansville and from his attitude towards performing live really makes you want to attend one of his shows because you know that he is ecstatic in the moment and giving his all. “It’s a tie between playing with a band (instead of acoustic) and hearing folks sing the words of my songs back to me (us). height of our semi-popularity, on any given night we’d have a few hundred folks waving back and forth singing along with the tunes. There is nothing like that,” said Huffman. There are only good things to be said about a musician that has been in the spotlight and still carries a sense of humility and gratitude. e shop, eat and work in a city layered with the faces of people we will never know. People catch our eye and people we brush past as though we were dodging trees or dips in the road, among this bustle is a humble community of musicians existing within the polished frame of normal Evansville life. They wait for the gleam of night, when the hungry show-goers and bar hoppers begin to gather around their local stage and the limitless air of performance intoxicates them all, wrapping our musicians in the harmony they lusted after throughout the day. For Matt Camp and fellow band members of Blame It On The Radio, returning to the stage is returning back home. The five-piece group are veterans of the Evansville music scene and well-known throughout the Midwest. The band consists of singer Elvis Anthony (Six Hills Grant, Dizzy Hollow), bassist Nick Wildeman, drummer Gregg Martin and guitarists Matt Camp (Calling Corners, Pieces of the Day) and Bruce Patten. Most members have known one another for years, bonding as their respective bands played shows together across town and beyond. The guys recently teamed up to begin the mighty endeavor of learning a near 50 cover songs to play with and stylize to their liking. “There’s gonna be at least 35+ artists that we are gonna cover,” Camp tells me over the phone. “There’s gonna be a ton of stuff there.”

Crowds can expect to hear anything from Linkin Park, Keith Urban, David Bowie and/or Kelly Clarkson. Included in their growing catalogue is Coldplay, Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones and other powerhouses of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. “We just want to make sure that when someone comes to see us, that we have something for everybody,” said Camp. “That they’ll tell their friends ‘hey, no matter what kind of music you like, you should go see these guys.’” BIOTR aims to bring their energy and philosophy to the covers, and to create a sound that is recognizably “them,” even without the original content. I jokingly liken playing in an original cover band to the whole “you wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear you” thing, and suddenly feel that I have wholly oversimplified a process which requires serious dedication. With keyboard instrumentation replaced with guitar parts, and otherwise ambient, melancholy songs spun into pop-rock party ballads, the band has had their work cut out for them. Their motto? “When it stops being fun, stop doing it,” said Camp, followed by a dramatic pause and a weighty chuckle that has me seeing his grimace through the phone. His previous band Calling Corners, took in the efforts of his heart and soul, ultimately teaching him that the best approach is to keep it simple. “After all the miles that I put in on the road. . . it still just got to the point where original music is tough, and if you don’t get that original radio single, you know, it’s almost a losing game. It got to the point where we just had a lot of guys who couldn’t chill and it stopped being fun.” Luckily for Matt and his band mates (all of whom are well-traveled professionals in the industry) rehearsals have been a “blast.” Even after a grueling day’s work, the recording studio is where they yearn to be. —Jacqueline Greenberg

Their next show will be at the end of August at the Deerhead Sidewalk Cafe, and Casino Aztar in September.

Historic Newburgh Theatre

B

renda Bender of the Historic Newburgh Theatre committee awaits the public’s response to Newburgh’s two newest plays of the year. Preservation Hall will be hosting a family theatre show in early August, complete with dinner discounts and a traveling theatre troupe, as well as a second one-man show in October. Until recently, Newburgh has rarely had an opportunity to explore theatre in its community, as long time resident Bender recalls. “In the 70’s there were some people who tried to revive theatre in Newburgh. We had poetry houses and coffee houses. A group did some things in the back room at the Tin Fish, they painted the walls black and had a black box theatre.” For Brenda and other members of the theatre committee, the upcoming plays offer a chance to give their town a dramatic outlet that could add to the artistic culture of Newburgh. When asked about the future of the theatre program, Brenda’s voice grows noticeably excited. The committee hopes to eventually recruit local material, including scripts and talent. “I would like to see that happen, that we have our own self sustaining Newburgh civic theatre,” said Bender. Until the committee is able to have its own functioning theatre, performances will take place at Preservation Hall. Whether or not the organization will be able to expand to bigger and better facilities depends largely on the reception of the upcoming productions. “It depends how these first two go,” said Bender, “because these two are experimental for us to see how people in the area react to this.” Bender hopes that a local

appreciation for theatre can be revived. Drawing from her own love of the craft, she tells, “You feel like you are a part of the conversation happening on stage even though you aren’t speaking. You feel like you’re a part of it because it’s right there in front of you.” The first production in the series, Down by the River will be showing on August 4th, at 8 p.m. in the Ebenezer room of Preservation Hall. Students from the theatre troupe Rivers Institute of Hanover College will be stopping in Newburgh to perform their traveling production for family and young children. The small cast includes actress and Evansville local Chyna Cheany. The play will tell the story of a nine year old girl given a homework assignment on the Ohio River who finds a magic pebble that transports her back in time. The girl meets Robert Fulton, inventor of the steam engine, who helps give her ideas for her assignment while also meeting other historical figures along the way. Families can also expect elements of science fiction, with tales of the mythical monster of the Ohio River wrapped into the performance. Tickets will be at $10 a piece, which includes a sameday discount for local restaurants. Vecchio’s, Café Arazu, Tin Fish, Knob Hill, and Edgewater Grille will be offering 10% off with proof of ticket purchase. Coffee and dessert will also be provided after the play, courtesy of Schnuck’s and Taldi’s. “It’s like progressive dinner theatre,” said Bender. “You can eat at one of the restaurants and then have dessert there.” —Jaqueline Greenberg

Ratings are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

Red Hook ESB

Christy Moore – 4 (E.S.B.) Extra Sensory Beer-ception? Maybe not, but you don’t need a sixth sense to appreciate a good beer. The pour is golden not at all heady. And even though it’s not as impressive as the last red hook beer I reviewed it wasn’t disappointing either. This seems to be a company that has a good formula for reaching a satisfying taste, without blundering around with unusual recipes whose consumption seems to be based on a dare.

Jabez Martinez – 3

Red Hook ESB is a clear, light amber color with good carbonation. It did have a lingering hoppy finish but nothing really good or bad about this beer. It also had a creamy flavor to it which I liked. I have liked most of the beers Red Hook put out in the past but this one is mediocre.

Nick D – 4

The Red Hook ESB boasts a dark orange hue with a slight scent of hops. The taste carries a moderate bite and the hop note is very slight but it is delivered with a rich texture. This brew is a good balance for people who like a subtle sweet flavor but also enjoy a smooth, velvety finish.

Goose Island Nut Brown Ale

Victory Headwaters Pale Ale

Christy Moore – 4 Normally I don’t like to be goosed, but this was a pleasant surprise. Absolutely no transparency, it pours very dark brown with about a half inch white head. The nose carries very hoppy tones but it doesn’t overwhelm with the bitterness that commonly follows. I don’t think it’s going to be a beer I would drink a lot when partying but would rather nicely compliment a good meal.

Christy Moore – 1 Head waters? Makes me think more of Booty Sweat! Cause it tastes like... Well you get the idea. Definitely not a victory in my opinion but after the bitterness numbs your taste buds it is alright. Preferably I like a beer that has Consistent flavor from beginning to end as opposed to one that Recoils your tongue at first, feeling like you might be tasting poison.

Jabez Martinez – 3 Jabez Martinez – 4

This beer poured a clear brown with a small tan head. I could smell hints of caramel in it but nothing major. It had a distinct nutty flavor to it as well. I could also taste a coffee flavor and would consider this almost a “light stout.” I will look for this in the fall watching football.

This beer poured a light, orange color with a decent head. It had an ample amount of citrus hops flavor with a light body. It has a dry flavor but and a smooth finish. I am not a “hoppy” flavored beer fan but this one was not bad. I could only drink about 1 or 2. The hops were getting to me after only 1.

Nick D – 5

Nick D– 3.5

Goose Island is notorious for putting out consistently quality beer and I imagine this will be no different. The color is a rich chocolate brown with a slight hoppy and smoky smell. The taste is smooth and clean but the flavors run rampant from caramel to subtle hops, coffee and back again. This is an awesome beer.

The color of this brew is not pale by any means; it pours a deep amber color with a reddish tint. A brief sniff reveals this beer contains more than its fair share of hops. The taste is clean. It starts off with a bite but it dissipates quickly and finishes smoothly. Solid beer, but it needs a flavor to accompany the hops.

Six Point Apollo

finishing all the other beers in the review didn’t get any better.

Jabez Martinez – 1

This poured a cloudy, orange color and looked very inviting but I was disappointed. It had the Belgium wheat flavor but was overpowered by the citrus flavor and it was a sour to boot. I could also taste some cloves. I barely choked this one down and this is the first ‘1’ I think I have ever given. Hopefully I just got a bad one but I will be avoiding this beer. Christy Moore – 4 This beer pours to a honey gold. With the name APOLLO all in caps, I expected a heavy weight contender like Apollo Creed. and though I don’t think it could knock out Rocky, this is a very good light beer with citrusy overtones, I will give it four points instead of six as the name denotes. Losing those two extra tally marks for the sappy attempt at poetry on the can that even when read again after

Nick D– 3.5

The scent coming off of this brew is like walking into a market in New Delhi. The aromas are exotic and voluptuous. The hue is a cloudy orange and the wheat taste is bullied to the side by the flavors of cloves and citrus. Not a bad beer but maybe too much punch for an average beer drinker.

News4U (N4U): What do

you do to prepare for a big game? Kyle Kuric (KK): Obviously, we do our practices, and our weight training – get some extra shots up and then just visually prepare and mentally prepare for the game for certain situations you might be put in and how you [will] react to it. So, when they come in the game you’re ready.

N4U: Who or what really

motivated you to pursue basketball? KK: My dad played a big role in it. He was always outside rebounding for me and shooting with me, anything I needed he was there.

N4U: Is there any personality trait you find important to have in basketball? KK: The thing about most guys on our level is that they are competitive. No matter who they are playing against they want to win. So, if you have that competitive nature you will be successful.

N4U: To any aspiring high

school player, what advice would you give them? KK: It’s always about hard work. As long as you work hard you will make it. —Nick Durcholz

rom playing on a toy goal when he was two years old to getting to play on one of the biggest stages in basketball, it is fair to say Kyle Kuric knows a thing or two about the game. He played for Memorial High School in Evansville and chose to attend the University of Louisville because “It was the best place and opportunity to play.” According to his University of Louisville profile, Kuric averaged 20.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocked shots as a senior in leading Memorial High School to a 21-2 record and the regional finals before falling to eventual Indiana state champion Washington. Kuric continued to put up big numbers while playing for the Louisville Cardinals. According to his University of Louisville profile, in his junior year he was third in the Big East for threepoint percentage (.449) and was seventh in field goal percentage (.514). Kuric averaged a team-high 15.1 points and 5.8 rebounds over the last 13 games, hitting 34of-74 three-pointers and 53.8 percent from the field. Kyle was able to take time out of his schedule to chat with News4U.

NCAA Football 2013

EA Sport’s NCAA Football has been the prime name in virtual college football since 1997. The series is actually four years older than that; it just went by a different name. The very first title that would later become the NCAA Football series was called Bill Walsh College Football and was released in June of 1993 for the Sega Genesis, Super NES and Sega CD. From year to year EA Sports has tweaked and tinkered around with the various dynamics of the gameplay. They continually add, subtract and have left some features static over the years. The new installment is no different boasting new dynamics such as the new ability to abort a play action after a snap, the lack of removal of blind swats and 430 new catches. One thing is for sure, as the years have passed the graphics keep getting better and better. This game is visually stunning. It employs fluid body movement, realistic object interaction and realistic player on player reactions. The sound is on par as well with true-to-life sounding announcers that comment and critique decision you have made on the field. As complicated as all of the new abilities, skills and dynamics of the game are it remains remarkably easy for a beginner to play and actually do fairly well. The game features online play with friends or with players chosen at random. There is also a single player Exhibition mode and the classic tournament style Dynasty Mode. The game’s simplest form One Button mode is ideal for young players. Both Big 10 and Big 12 teams are featured but player names are not listed. This game provides the intense multi-player games and the general edge of your seat excitement that the series is known for but all in all it is just another stroll on the turf. —Nick Durcholz

This game is rated ‘E’ for Everyone and is available on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Ride For

Recovery

S

undays are the perfect day to take a ride. Why not ride for a reason? Mental Health America of Vanderburgh County will host the fourth annual Ride for Recovery on Sunday, August 19th. The ride is to raise funds and awareness about mental health disorders with a journey through the areas MHA serves while providing food, fun and live entertainment. “One in four people have a treatable mental disorder. It is time to break the stigma and start talking about it,” said MHA board member, Theresa Arvin. Registration for automobiles and motorcycles will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the MHA offices located at 410 Mulberry Street in downtown Evansville. A bicycle path has been included this year with the help of Tour Deville bicycle group. Bicyclists can register at the Posey County fair grounds. It is $20 per rider and $10 per extra rider. You can also purchase a family pass for $40. All proceeds help support MHA’s efforts in the tri-state area. “We provide aid to people who need medication for their treatable disorder. In 2011, we were able to provide over $26,000 in psychiatric medicines to individuals in need. Not only do we provide medication, but we also provide support group services,” said Arvin. Participants can also look forward to a silent auction, corn hole and live entertainment provided by Andrea Wirth and DJ Storm. Brenda Heldt will also speak during lunch about her personal experience with MHA. —Brooklyn Solis

Casa de mi Padre Pantelion Films

Will Ferrell goes a little off the beaten path and brings his brand of comedy to what appears to be a Spanish telenovella. Farrell plays Armando Alvarez who has worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico since he could work. The ranch encounters money troubles but it seems Armando’s brother Raul has the problem solved with his success in international business. It becomes clear things might not be as simple as they seem, and it becomes up to Armando to save the dia. I begin with a disclaimer to the viewer that this movie is entirely in Spanish and includes subtitles. Will Farrell’s humor does shine through with excessively dramatic lines and small, eccentric events. It is clear the movie is meant to flow like a 70’s style western. The movie is peppered with campy effects and subpar editing which actually plays into the humor of the whole film. If you are a fan of Farrell-brand humor check it out. If not, you should probably avoid it.

Lockout

Open Road Films Lockout is a futuristic special operations thriller with all the usual fixings. Guy Pierce plays Snow, a man who is wrongly accused of conspiracy to commit espionage against the United States of America. He is offered a deal from the government for his freedom if he can rescue the president’s daughter who is trapped in an outer space prison populated by vicious inmates. This film suffers tremendously from the cliché influenza. All of the characters are flat and uninteresting. The rough and tough one-liners are cheesy and flimsy and even the action comes off as only slightly entertaining. Movies like this have potential but it seems that hardly anyone ever goes through the trouble of at least attempting to make them unique. Spice up the dialogue, make the characters conflicted and multilayered and simmer the drama slowly until the flavor pops.

Three Stooges 20th Century Fox

The Farrelly brothers reincarnation of the slapstick comedy trio has slapped, poked and slipped its way into movie stores all over the country. The movie features Will Sasso as Curly, Sean Hayes as Larry and Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe. The zany threesome find themselves in a contemporary world, ripe with comedy potential. The become maintainence men in the foster home which they were abandoned. The home comes under financial troubles and they choose to stumble in to save the day. Along the way they become involved in other goofy adventures. I have to hand it to the casting team on this one. They did a fantastic job filling the trio with Sasso, Hayes and Diamantopoulos. Their portrayal of the three is spot on. Some may say that Hollywood should let sleeping dogs lie but this film is a solid linchpin through which younger generations can be exposed to this classic comedy team and discover their original material. The movie isn’t outrageously funny, the plot is tacky and gimmicky but it serves a higher purpose.

Friends with Kids Lionsgate

Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt play two close friends Jason Fryman and Julie Keller who decided to have a child together while keep their relationship on a non-romantic level. They both recognize the toll children can take on intimate, loving relationships and as the movie progresses they discover their approach is very tricky to uphold. From the comedic point of view this film is lacking. There maybe 4 good laughs throughout. The concept behind the plot is interesting but as a whole it remains fairly predictable. The film portrays a great amount of truth when it comes to new couples with young children and in the aspect it is poignant but there are a few holes at important times in the movie that should have been addressed. —Nick Durcholz Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309 • August 2012

The 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking has just passed, so there is a myriad of books being published on the subject. Weeding the good from the bad can be difficult to do. If you have an interest in the Titanic (or even if you don’t), The Dressmaker tells a side to the story that many have never heard. In the aftermath of the sinking, trials were held in America and England trying to determine who was to blame for the accident. Alcott introduces us to Tess, an aspiring seamstress, who finds herself in the middle of the legal battles. Right before the Titanic is to set sail, Tess leaves her current position as a maid, and is desperate for a fresh start. By a great chance of luck, she finds herself maid to fashion designer Lady Duff Gordon, with a spot on the Titanic’s maiden voyage. During the four short days aboard, Tess captures the attention of a sailor and an older millionaire. After the ships sinks, Tess is in the middle of the media frenzy and trial hearings as her mentor, Duff Gordon, and the young sailor both take the stand with two very different stories.

With all the buzz The Hunger Games has generated, a wave of dystopian fiction is being published for adults and young adults. Roth has created a series that is just as enjoyable to read as The Hunger Games, and would look amazing on the big screen (hint, hint to the production companies!). In this first book of the series, readers are introduced to Beatrice Prior, a sixteen-year-old girl living in dystopian Chicago. The world she knows is divided into five factions- Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Every year, the sixteenyear-olds select which faction they wish to belong. In the first few chapters of the book, Beatrice struggles with her decision. While she feels like she doesn’t belong in her current faction, to leave it means that she will leave her parents and brother behind. While her internal struggle sets the tone of the book, it is only after Beatrice abandons her faction and family for the Dauntless that the real story begins. Once there, she becomes Tris, a girl who must be fearless just to live through the initiation process.

The Big O Music Fest

F

or those of you with a hillbilly bone, The Big O Music Fest in Owensboro, Kentucky at Reid’s Orchard on August 18th is the place to exercise it. Gates will open at noon with the show beginning at 1 p.m. Don’t miss your chance to catch Tracey Lawrence, Jo Dee Messina, Gloriana, Locash Cowboys and Joanna Smith, with headliner Blake Shelton. It is no surprise that Blake Shelton is a fan favorite for this year’s Big O Music Fest. Since his 2001 hit “Austin” gained national attention he has enjoyed a large fan following, while continuing to climb the ladder of country music stardom. Two weeks after graduating high school, Shelton chased his dream to Nashville, rubbing elbows with legendary songwriters and landing a contract with Giant Records. With his 2003 release of The Dreamer under his new contract with Warner Brothers, and 2004 Blake Shelton’s Barn and Grill he secured his spot in Country music lovers hearts and his place in popular country music with certified gold. He has had 17 singles on the country charts, which includes 10 number one hits. With his own label, Rocky Comfort Records, Tracy Laurence is doing things his way. Since his debut album in 1991 Sticks and Stones on Atlantic Records, Lawrence has topped the Billboard Charts a few times, with 17 number one singles to be exact. His songs are easy to relate to because Lawrence writes about things that really happen in day to day life. “It hits close to home and some of the songs may cut to the bone,” Lawrence said on his web site. “You learn life by living it and my music today is more mature and intellectual. I’ve learned that you have to be true to yourself and true to your craft. One day I just woke up and took a deep breath and let it out.” Jo Dee Messina’s rise to fame was no easy walk in cowgirl boots. At 19, she packed everything she owned, moved to Nashville and sang for anyone that would listen. In 1999, she was names ACM’s Top New Female Artist. She might have had a little help from her friend Tim Mcgraw and well known music producer Bryan Gallimore but she has been signed and dropped before begging Curb Record Executives to listen to her demo. Messina was signed on the spot. On her fan website she said, “I am a work in process, I am constantly

learning. I am constantly growing. You’re always evolving and it never ends. You’re never, “Okay. I am done.” I’ve figured it all out.” In 2009 brothers Tim and Mike Gossin joined forces with the beautifully talented Rachel Reinert to form Gloriana. There album quickly skyrocket to number two on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. They were also the opening act for Taylor Swift’s Fearless Tour. Their second album A Thousand Miles Left Behind is to be released this summer. In 2010, Gloriana won the Academy of Country Music’s Award for Top New Vocal Group and were nominated for a Teen Choice Award for “Choice Country Group.” “If you tried to line up the stars like this, it would never happen,” Preston Brost of LoCash said on his fan web site. “It really feels like magic and destiny.” Brost along with Chris Lucas make up Locash. They were enjoying playing packed clubs in Nashville before they scored their first record deal. Not only do they have the country croon fans crave, but their dance moves and entertaining live shows will make a fan out of anyone. They have opened for Charlie Daniel’s Band and ZZ Top. JoAnna Smith fell in love with country music, while singing along with Dolly Parton and Reba McIntyre. She left behind a full scholarship to Auburn University to pursue her dream of being on stage. She joined an all girl country band, Mustang Sally. As the band parted wats, she decided to stay in Nashville and scored a publishing deal with Big Borassa Music. She is working on her first full length studio record and currently is signed with Sony Music, located in Nashville. —Brooklyn Solis The Big O Music Festival will also have vendors on site and t-shirts on sale. Tickets are priced at regular admission for $49.50. You can also purchase a VIP pass for $125. For more information visit wwwbogomusicfest.org

37th Annual At The Vanderburgh County 4-H

The Frog Follies credit rodauthority.com

I

n 1974, a few of Evansville’s resident street rod fanatics met up to show off their pre-49’ beauties over a light picnic. Today, the now Evansville Street Rod Club proudly offers the largest street rod show of its kind in the world. The club members have dubbed the event “Frog Follies” after the frog racing games played by children at their picnics in the early days. The show is based around street rods made out of pre-1949 vehicles. “Street rod” was a term I was all but familiar with, so I spoke with Bob Bell of Frog Follies to get a full break down. “Basically, you take a 39’ Chevrolet, you strip it all down, put a v8 motor in it, automatic transmission maybe, air conditioning, electric windows, cruise control,” Bell tells me, creating a hypothetical participant. “Just like if you walked out and got into your car today, the engine and interior could be put in a 1939 Chevrolet body.” Frog Follies’ loose criterion paves the road for scores of car freaks and meticulous collectors to rebuild antique vehicles into revved up street rods, combining the aesthetic of days long gone, with the sophistication of today’s automotive technology.

Without buckling under the event’s global popularity, Frog Follies has yet to turn away a qualifying car. ` Last year, the event reeled in over 3,500 street rods from North America and Australia. Car owners who weren’t met with the burden of crossing several oceans hopped inside their freshly primed gems and bumbled across the country for the weekend event. Participants from Australia loaded their street rods onto a ship that made its way to California; the cars then rode cross country to pull in right on time with everyone else. Gas, travel expenses and the risk of damaging the laboriously designed cars are all factors that make participation a large venture. Judging by the colossal turnout, those risks are well worth it. “Everybody brings their cars out and finds a place to park ‘em,” Bell draws out, having participated in every event for the last 38 years. “They shine them and make them look pretty. Everybody looks at them, gets some ideas, and goes home and makes changes to them!” Bell lets out a bewildered, hearty laugh and I realize that this event is, as bolded on their website, “a rod run put on by street rodders - for street rodders.”

For wannabe hobbyists and eccentric pros looking to tinker with their automotive fantasies, the show provides a swap meet, featuring a megastore-sized amount of used car parts. Bell claims a rodder can find just about anything they need at the Frog Follies swap. The event runs from August 24th to the 26th, and non-rodders can tour the space at only $5 a person. Participants and spectators are provided with homemade food from the Street Rod Club, along with games and dances. Frog Follies is geared towards all ages and is expecting near 5,000 cars this year, making 2012 a show that will break records and give inspiration to the next generation of street rod enthusiasts. —Jacqueline Greenberg Frog Follies will be held at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center. local band spotlight

Witchdagger Zac Brown Band

About the band:

Witchdagger is Nick on Guitar, Jamie on Bass, Scott on Drums and Breeze on Vocals. What they cover:

Our sound is thick and huge. It is all original Stoner/ Doom Metal. If we ever cover anything it will be Sabbath or Weedeater. Their influences:

Our influences range from Pentagram to Buzz*oven, from Sabbath to Bongripper, and St.Vitus to the Melvins. Where you can catch their performances:

Check us out at Lanhuck’s or The Duck Inn, and Metal Nights all over town. Check the News 4U calendar for event dates!

Uncaged (Atlantic) 4 Stars Hailing from the Peach State, the Zac Brown Band is quite possibly one of the most unique bands on the country music scene today. They are fairly new to the scene, stepping into the spotlight only four years ago. Uncaged is their third release on a major label and it promises to be their most indepth studio experience to date. What gives the Zac Brown Band their edge is that they use country stylings as a base then include other genres such as R & B, rock and even reggae to keep things fresh. “Jump Right In” is a song you would want to be listening to while enjoying a cold beverage on a beach, it is mellow but jovial. “The Wind” is a rip-roaring, bluegrass-inspired track with rapid-fire fiddle and a feel good spirit. The instrumentation and vocals are smooth and precise. “Goodbye in Her Eyes” is a melancholy track about love lost that really showcases Brown’s vocal talents. —Nick Durcholz

The Smashing Pumpkins

Oceania (EMI) 2.5 Stars Billy and the (new) gang are back and not a moment too soon. They formed in the late 80’s but if there was any band of the 90’s that stands out among the rest as truly unique and talented it is the Pumpkins. This album was almost scrapped but Billy and his brand new band put their noses to the grind stone and made it happen. This is their ninth studio album and my fingers and toes are crossed hoping for great results. The album opener “Quasar” seems to capture the Pumpkin’s searing, stilted guitar riffs and it even the drumming seems spectacular but wait…Something is going on here. Song by song I notice that each track “Violet Rays,” “The Celestials,” “Pale Horse” and so on, seems too familiar. Corgan and his new band seem to be trying a bit too hard to bring back the pumpkins of old and it is quite noticeable. I guess the old saying is true, that all good things must come to an end (12 years ago.) —Nick Durcholz

The Cold Stares

A Cold Wet Night and a Howling Wind 4.5 Stars The Cold Stares 2012 release “A Cold Wet Night and a Howling Wind” grabs you and doesn’t let you go until its 15 tracks are done with you. The album features the blues rock duo of vocalist and guitarist Chris Tapp, and drummer Brian Mullins. Tapp captures the classic Zeppelin and Black Sabbath guitar tones and puts them to work with riffs that are guaranteed to move you. Mullins brings back the glory of the drums being at the forefront of the music, with his tastefully busy hands and thunderous bass drum. This pristinely recorded album is a must listen. It is quite rare to find an album that has such raw sounds and energy, but still has a very polished mix. To put it simply, these two guys know what they are doing in a studio. If you don’t believe me, crank up your stereo and check out track 15, “Red Letter Blues.” The power of the chorus will blow your mind. “A Cold Wet Night and a Howling Wind” captures two musicians in their prime, executing with a clear focus and direction. —Casey Williams

Nas

Life is Good (Def Jam) 3.5 Stars Nas is no stranger to the spotlight. He encountered the mainstream music world 21 years ago when he was featured on the debut album of the hip hop group Main Source. Since then he has feuded with Jay-Z, gotten political and called out Bill O’Reilly. Oh yeah, and he has also released nine studio albums. Life is Good is the tenth addition to that list. “Accident Murderers” featuring Rick Ross showcases the coarse side of Nas. It has an old-school sound and lyrics of tougher times for Nas and Rick Ross. “World’s An Addiction” featuring Anthony Hamilton broadcasts a great message about being able to distance yourself from worldly possessions. Nas and Hamilton accomplish this with skillful lyrical flair. “Bye Baby” is Nas bringing his tumultuous relationship with Kelis (his ex-wife) to song. —Nick Durcholz

Linkin Park

Living Things (Warner Brothers) 2.5 Stars This band has holds a lot of memories for me. Months before the name Linkin Park was on anyone’s radar, I knew them well and had their first album Hybrid Theory. This album is track after track of solid tunes. I recognized it then and I still recognize it now. 12 year and three albums later, Linkin Park seems to be on a slow decline. In over a decade their sound, lyrics and image remain pretty much the same for the fifth album. The first single off the album “Burn It Down” sounds like the Linkin Park of the past but it feels forced and without soul. “Lies, Greed, and Misery” is the same routine with its bitter lyrics that sound like Chester Bennington took song lyrics from the past and threw them together. You might enjoy this song if you are an emo. In short, there is absolutely nothing new here. C’mon boys, at least try to act like you still care! —Nick Durcholz

The Beat Daddys - Root Rubbin’ Ball Self-Released

The Beat Daddys’ newest 12 track album is an answered prayer for music listeners searching for the consistency of a plastic-wrapped blues sound. The musicians perform with well-seasoned dexterity, yet the compilation lacks the vulnerable, woeful moans and cries that the blues was first born out of. The monotonous and overdue reign of Stevie Ray Vaughan-influenced blues rock dominates and ultimately devours the latest musical efforts of The Beat Daddys.

Cafeteria Dance Fever Danceology

Hovercraft Records

Garage band Cafeteria Dance Fever shakes uncontrollably through a 30 minute, 24 track album echoing of super-hyper beach pop caked in nothing but lighthearted fun. Drawing parallels to the west coast fuzz craze resurrected by the likes of Ty Segall, Danceology shouts through a throat of vintage crust-laced with spaced out sing-a-longs and a chorus-y, consistent tone. CDF effortlessly adds fuel to the fire of their sister bands without taking their sound into uncharted territory.

Maps & Atlases - Beware and Be Grateful Barsuk Records

What once began for Maps & Atlases as the innocent yells and violent, orgasmic thrusts of their technically mastered instrumentals has bloomed into an album comfortable with sentimental longing and romantic fragility. While still riding on a math rock foundation, the band is now emblazoned with a regional, earthy vibe. It gives them a flavor and realness that was once hidden behind an often misunderstood and underestimated genre.

Tim Smith of Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners. Coming from a Bourbon aficionado, fan and ambassador of the industry, you might wonder how this friendship started with myself and moonshine star Tim Smith of Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners. During the first week of the most popular show to ever air on Discovery Channel, Tim Smith and I met and did an interview on BourbonBlog.com giving thousands of fans the chance to go behind the scenes in the day of moonshiner. Shortly thereafter, we were sipping shine and eating BBQ in Times Square. Now, as the premiere of Moonshiners Season 2 draw near, Tim, his son J.T. and I all catch up in Louisville, Kentucky and I show them around Kentucky’s Bourbon Country. BOURBONBLOG.COM: We invited y’all and you decided to visit us in Bourbon County, great to have you here!

2012 • www.News4UOnline.com

Lot of corn fields. Looks like Kentucky is welcome to a lot of distilleries. I’m trying to get in business, so many Kentucky is the place to be. So you may have your operation here? You never know. Right now you’re working on Moonshiners Season 2? It will come out toward the end of the year, around winner time. What will we see in season 2? You’ll have to wait until Moonshiners Season 2 . But i’m still at it, traveling meeting a lot of people and making appearances. Do you have a favorite summer drink?

TIM SMITH: Its the best place to find Bourbon right?

Sweet tea and moonshine mixed together.

What do you think of Bourbon Country?

How does it feel to represent America?

Its nice buy we gotta go back to the base. We got to make some moonshine first.

I like to go out and represent moonshine and say its made in the USA. I was made in America.

How is that coming?

Me too. Moonshiners TV show came along at the perfect time for this country. It speaks in many ways to something we needed at this moment in the U.S.A. How do you think it is contributing to all that is happening now in our country?

We’re working on some things, talking with some guys, things are coming along pretty good.

88 | August

What do u like about Bourbon Country?

It shows us that we have forgotten our roots. Today’s generation many have forgotten the roots. So when we brought the show out, we surprised a few guys. Let’s go have some moonshine. Let’s do it! On the visit, we toured several distilleries and Louisville Slugger Museum. Our evening ended with dinner at Lynn’s Paradise Cafe, and then some drinks for the adults in the gang at Majid’s at St. Matthews.

BourbonBlog.com only encourages responsible and legal drinking. This article is not to be interpreted to the advocating buying or making illegal moonshine. —Tom Fischer Left to Right - J.T., Tom Fischer, and Tim Smith at the Louisville Slugger Museum, Louisville KY.

Mixologist Stephen Dennison poured up a variety of moonshine cocktails that you can find on BourbonBlog.com. As we wait for Season 2 and for Tim Smith’s potential moonshine release and distillery, there are some other brands which are worth a sample that may invoke some memories of moonshine stories that you can always Tweet to @ BourbonBlog – but otherwise might now wanna share.... We recommend Catdaddy Moonshine (which has some unique flavors added to it). Also, for an unaged whiskey, we recommend. Hudson New York Corn WhiskeyBoth which can be purchased at Frontier Liquors.

7 Annual YMCA Spirit, Mind, Body Triathlon th

T

his year’s 7th annual YMCA Spirit, Mind, Body Triathlon will take place on August 11th at the Scales Lake Park in Boonville, IN. Racers will take off at 7 a.m., many of whom will have been practicing in either the swimming pool or around the track at as early as 5 in the morning. Registration has been open for months, and contestants have had to place themselves in one of three distances courses, each progressively more difficult and physically strenuous than the last. The Duathlon will require racers to run 1.2 miles, ride bikes for 15 miles, and run a second time for 3.1 miles. The other categories, Sprint and Olympic, will require at least half a mile of swimming, biking, and running- a grueling but ambitious course for even an athletic individual. The Sprint requires a half-mile swim, 25-mile bike ride, and 3.1 mile run to the finish. For Olympic contestants, who will be partaking in the most physically demanding triathlon of the three, they must swim one mile, bike a 25-mile trek, and close with a heart-pounding 6.2-mile sprint. Water stations will be provided along the way of all the courses, along with medical supervision. Many participants have been training on a daily basis since May, thanks to a 12-week training program offered by experienced triathlon coaches and athletes. Trainees developed a comprehensive schedule that they have committed to in order to be as physically prepared as possible for the big day. Included in their preparation was a nutrition program to get runners ontrack with a healthy diet plan suitable for athletes. The YMCA also welcomes people who would like to volunteer at the event. The triathlon will need an array of volunteers both in the race and on the sidelines assisting with onlookers. Spectators will be parking and taking a shuttle to

the race, so shuttle drivers and assistance in transportation is necessary, as well as assistance with traffic control to ensure the safety of the runners. Helpers may also assist in running the water stations along the contestants’ route, helping runners get refreshed once they’ve crossed the finish line, and handing out medals at the end of the race. Other volunteer opportunities are available the day before the race, and those interested should give the YMCA a call at (812) 401-9622. For Evansville, a town recently named the most obese in the nation, the triathlon will serve to bring the community together in an area it may need the most support. Whether you are one of the brave participants or only a spectator, gathering with local friends and strangers in cheer and physical fitness may prove to many the rewards that come from achieving our health ambitions. Proceeds from the event will go towards the numerous youth and family programs of the YMCA, including swimming, basketball, after-school care, fit kids courses, and adult wellness and nutrition classes. Late sign-ups are still open, so if you and a friend are looking to expand on your fitness goals, contact the YMCA to get your race number today! —Jacqueline Greenberg

Doug Hagman of Terrapin Flyer

News4U (N4U): Being that you are the founding member of Terrapin

Flyer, what inspired you to bring the band together? Doug Hagman (DH): In October 1999, the band I was in just broke up so I was looking for something new. I was offered a gig with that band at this place to play after a Phil Lesh, Bob Dylan concert. My band had just broken up, so I was like okay, I’ll just play solo. Then this guy emailed me and he said hey, I play bass - the internet was starting to get rolling at this time so, this was kind of a thing that was built on the Grateful Dead’s website. There was a chat forum on the Grateful Dead’s website that was managed by Robert Hunter who is the lyricist for the Grateful Dead. So, that’s where this offer came from, the guy who owned a pub that was actually a few blocks from my house in Logan Square in Chicago, emailed me and said how would you like to do this, and I said okay. Then I heard from a bass player who said I’ll come in and play bass. So, it was going to be me and a bass player and after the show I ran into this mandolin player – he was just walking down the street and he said I’ll jam with you guys. So, it ended up that we played this show impromptu and it was a lot of fun. One of the guys said how about we do this every Sunday and just have a jam night. So, he ran an ad on WXXQ, which is a big radio station out here and the thing just kept growing and growing and a new band eventually formed out of it. We are taking Grateful Dead’s music, which is a highly improv format, and we try to bring it to our own space.
