@ The Ford Center: An Interview with Bassist Branden Campbell

The Neon Trees will bring their luminescent, sleek brand of alt-pop to the Ford Center in downtown Evansville on April 12.

he band began capturing ears and hearts with their hit single “Animal” in 2010, boasting a passionate chorus and driving, jovial and crisp instrumentation, it gathered instantaneous appeal. Fast forward to April 2012, the band released their sophomore album Picture Show to similar if not greater success thanks to the energetic single “Everybody Talks.” Straight out of the Beehive State, the quartet is Tyler Glenn on lead vocals/ keyboard, Chris Allen on guitar, Branden Campbell on bass and Elaine Bradley on drums/ backing vocals. They are touring solo and with Maroon 5 and Owl City in promotion of their latest album. News4U got an opportunity to speak to bassist Branden Campbell in the midst of the band’s hectic touring schedule. News4U (N4U): Who or what got you into music? Branden Campbell (BC): Looking back, I think it was the immediate feeling I got from pop and 80’s rock. I was hooked right away on artists like Van Halen and Michael Jackson. As a young teen I got into Black Flag, The Misfits and Bad Brains, which lead to discovering local Las Vegas punk bands. The music and passion was so honest. I met a variety of older players that turned me onto more punk and alternative, but also funk like James Brown and Funkadelic. I gravitated to the groove. N4U: What do you like most about the instrument you play? How does it move you? BC: I love playing bass because it’s the bridge between the rhythm and the melody. N4U: Before recording, did you guys have any certain direction in mind you wanted to go with Picture Show? BC: We didn’t want to focus too much on proving something for the sake of being interesting, or just to make a bold second record statement. We built a fan base on Habits,, so why should we flip that script? But we did want to build upon that first record and expand. I think we did that.

N4U: Do you have a favorite track to perform live? If so, why? BC: Right now, it’s “Trust.” It’s a good blend of alternative rock and dance. I think it’s a stand-out track on this tour. N4U: In its recording stages, did any of you think that “Animal” had the potential to be the hit that it became? Explain. BC: We honestly thought it might get played on a few radio stations across America, but we never felt entitled to a mega-hit. Never. We all come from the DIY local band world, so to end up with a world-wide hit single was a real treat. And then to repeat that with “Everybody Talks” was again, another great feeling. We’re glad people are enjoying our music and hope it puts them in a good mood.

N4U: What was your experience playing music with Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (The Killers) in Attaboy Skip? BC: Ronnie? Never heard of him. (Laughs) Those were great times. We were all just friends hoping to get gigs and have fun playing. We were cutting our teeth, learning our craft, learning how to deal with promoters, touring, self-releasing albums and merchandise. It was all new to us, but I think we did great, and accomplished the fun. Everyone involved in ABS (Attaboy Skip) looks back fondly. —Nick Durcholz

Evansville Police Department (EPD) Detective/School Resources Officer Patrick Phernetton is on a mission. The driving force behind the local charity boxing event Guns & Hoses, he is laser-focused on making the upcoming sixth edition the most successful yet. And he is taking another major step towards his ultimate goal: building a group home in the community for children afflicted with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS).

hernetton’s daughter, Mykenna (“Mickey”) is one of the more than 400,000 individuals around the world living with this rare genetic disorder. The disease creates a sense of constant hunger and if left unattended, sufferers of PWS will literally eat themselves to death. Each year since its inception, Guns & Hoses has raised thousands of dollars for the cause, not to mention the up-keep of Kids Kingdom Playground and countless other charities for children with disabilities. Phernetton spoke with News4U about the April 20th event that pits the EPD against the Evansville Fire Department (EFD) in a battle royal inside the ring. News4U (N4U): How did the idea for Guns & Hoses initially come about? Patrick Phernetton (PP): Well, they say the best ideas are stolen (laughs). I used to work in St. Louis, and they have been staging a similar event there for many years. It’s extremely popular and has raised a ton of money. N4U: What makes this event such a success? PP: Well, it’s part rock concert, part boxing matches. We really try to emphasize the entertainment value. People always love our openings – they’re always flashy and patriotic. This year there’s a twist that I can’t tell you about. But I promise it’s going to be big. As for the matches, there will be about 15. Thankfully, we always have plenty of volunteers, so I don’t have to fight (laughs)! The crowd really gets into the action and loves seeing the two departments clash.

N4U: What’s the relationship like between the EPD and the EFD? PP: This event has done wonders for the relationship. There will always be a natural rivalry between the two departments – it’s just built in. But since Guns & Hoses, we now have a common cause. You’ll see at the event – after each ﬁght, the boxers will hug and hold each others’ hands in the air. When we’re out in the community serving the public, we have a lot to talk about with each other now because of this charity. N4U: How close are you to realizing your dream of building an area group home for PWS children? PP: Based on the money raised from Guns & Hoses, we’re about four or ﬁve years away from the goal. There are only a handful of homes around the country, and I have no doubt that once we open it, we will receive requests from all over. So, my hope is that we keep raising money and building more homes as time goes on. N4U: Who are the people that have helped make this event a reality? PP: My fellow 911 Gives Hope board members have been invaluable: Billy Bolin, Chris Reiter, Matt Garnett, Dave Weis, Chris Everett and Darin Harmon. And I can’t sing the praises of EFD Inspector Mike Doran enough. I do this because my daughter has a disease, but these guys do it because that’s the kind of people they are – just good citizens. —Thomas Ellis

Arts Festival Spring Edition // Spunk in the City 2013

This year the Haynie' s Corner Art District has two exciting community events that put the fun in funky for both kids and adults alike on the same weekend in April.

he 4th Annual Funk in the City – Spring Edition Arts Festival will be on Saturday, April 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the corner of 2nd Street and Adams Avenue (Evansville’s Haynie’s Corner, known for its signature fountain in the middle of the square) and is an all ages, family-friendly event. The cost of admission is only $5 for adults and children 12 and under are free. A portion of the proceeds will go to the art program of Evansville’s Boys and Girls Club. Funk in the City, a locally based volunteer run organization, has been providing the tri-state area artistic festivals and events since its founding ten years ago. Because of the popularity of their Haynie’s Corner Fall Art’s Festival held in every year in September, now in its 11th year, the Spring Edition Art’s Festival promises to bring in very large crowds from throughout the region. Those that attend the fest can expect to see and be able to purchase various types of art ranging from painting, pottery, jewelry, handmade crochet and more from over 50 local, regional and national artists. Local artists include Aunt Jenny’s knits, T. J. Byrd Antiquity Design, David Powell Glass Art and Cynthia Watson. Food vendors will also be at the fest with local establishments being represented in a range from the Acropolis and Kirby’s Fine Dining to Zesto’s.

On Friday, April 26th listen to Andrea Wirth, Opal Fly, and Firefox Magik on the radio at 91.5 WUEV as they play some tunes you can expect to hear, and talk about the festival on the Paul Mattingly Show live from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. All three will be performing that night at the fest. The COC hopes everyone can make it down to as much of one event, and hopefully both events if at all possible because, as they put it, “It takes a tribe to raise a village and with your help we are all “Keepin’ Evansville Funky.”

The weekend provides another event, the 2013 Spring Spunk in the City Music, Dance and Fire Festival, this one with a plethora of genres in live music for adults only (21 +) just around the corner (literally) at the Bokeh Lounge Outdoor Music Pavilion at 1007 Parrett Street. Why you should have renters insurance! with

f you rent a home or apartment, renters insurance is a musthave. The average cost is around ten to fifteen dollars per month and it protects you and your stuff from all kinds of terrible things! We all know someone who has been burglarized or who lost everything in a fire or other disaster. Renters insurance protects your personal belongings. It also protects you if you are negligent and accidentally start a fire by leaving the stove on, or if you leave your house/apartment in a hurry and leave the water running and it overflows into the house or the apartment below you! Without renters insurance, you would be personally responsible for any damage done to the home or apartment building. This does happen, and you want to make sure you are covered!

"How do I know how much coverage to get?" When deciding how much personal property coverage you need, you should assess what it would cost to replace everything you own. Not what it is worth, but what it would take to go to the store and buy it again. That is the minimum amount of coverage you should purchase. When it comes to choosing liability coverage, I don’t recommend anything less than $300,000 for most people (it isn’t extremely costly to increase coverage beyond that either). That should ensure your assets are covered. So if you or one of your kids accidentally destroys your rented house or apartment, your insurance company will replace it and you will not be sued (by your landlords insurance company) for the cost of the building. If you don’t have the money to pay for the repairs, you can even lose future earnings until the debt is paid! Renter’s insurance doesn’t cover everything so it is important to ask your agent what it does and doesn’t cover; the important thing is that you get the insurance to protect you!

Live at the Ford Center Brit Floyd is not your typical tribute band. No, this isn’t just a bunch of guys who get together on the weekends to escape the doldrums of their workaday lives by assuming the identities of rock stars. Rather, this is an obsession – a deep, all-encompassing love for the music of Pink Floyd.

he members of Brit(ish) Floyd (which include a New Yorker – more about that later) have taken the idea of a tribute band about as far as it can go, replicating every note, nuance, sound and visual. The attention to detail is astonishing whether your eyes are open or closed. No, this is not a weekend band. These guys tour like a rock and roll machine, complete with hordes of semis carrying the gigantic stage props, lights and sound equipment necessary to make you feel like you walked into a genuine Pink Floyd concert. On the eve of a major North American tour that arrives at the Ford Center on April 19, bassist Ian Cattell (the lone American in the band) spoke with News4U about the Brit Floyd experience. News4U (N4U): You are obviously nuts about Pink Floyd. When did the band ﬁrst appear on your radar? Ian Cattell (IC): I remember when The Wall came out – I was about 10 at the time. I won the album through a radio contest. But then my mom heard “Another Brick in the Wall” on our way to pick it up – speciﬁcally the line “we don’t need no education” – and decided that we don’t need that album (laughs)! I eventually got my own copy of The Wall though, and the rest is history.

N4U: How did a native New Yorker become the front man for a British-based tribute band? IC: Well, Brit Floyd actually grew out of the Australian Pink Floyd tribute band, and their bassist didn’t want to tour much anymore. Auditions were held in the UK, but they couldn’t ﬁnd anybody. That led to an expanded search.

N4U: You are effectively the “Roger Waters” of the band. How daunting is it to be the voice of Pink Floyd every night? IC: I’ve received some training, so I can do very well with the vocal demands of Roger Waters songs, but if you were to ask me to sing Led Zeppelin or Queen it would be worse than awful (laughs). I just sort of sing “in character” and stay aware of my limitations. N4U: For this tour, the band is playing five full album sides from five different Pink Floyd albums. How did you decide which material to play? IC: It was tough. If we played everything song we wanted to, the gigs would be six hours long (laughs). It was just a process of figuring out which sides of which albums would work well together – and just playing a nice variety of material for the fans and us. N4U: Has the band received any comments – good or bad – from former members of Pink Floyd? IC: They are certainly aware of us. David Gilmour actually hired a former incarnation of this band to play his 50th birthday party. Plus, he saw them in concert and came backstage afterwards. N4U: Considering the sheer spectacle of the production which mimics Pink Floyd’s 1994 Division Bell tour (known as the Pulse tour), how much preparation was necessary? IC: Endless. I promise that no one who loves Pink Floyd will be disappointed.

Have you ever wondered what to do with those older items that are past their prime, but you can’t seem to bring yourself to throw away? Why not recycle the items and make something wearable out of them?

hat’s the idea behind a trashion show. A trashion show is a fashion show where the clothes are designed and made completely from materials that would otherwise be headed to the trash or recycling. Lorna Littrell was traveling this past fall when she came upon the idea for a trashion show. “I happened to see where another community had done a show like this, and I fell in love with the idea,” she said. Littrell returned home and placed a few phone calls in hopes of bringing this event to the tri-state. She has partnered with the Downtown Henderson Partnership and Ohio National Bank to bring the Trashion Show to Henderson. Ohio National Bank helped immensely by underwriting some of the expense of the show. “Our photographer, Chelsea Crooks, created some posters and flyers and distributed them with the help of the DHP, the Henderson Chamber of Commerce and Ohio Valley National Bank, and we were on our way!” exclaimed Littrell. Submitted sketches will be reviewed by the panel of judges “so they can make sure they pass the wearability and wardrobe ‘good taste’ test.” “Hopefully this year, when everyone sees how much fun it will be, we will have more young people wanting to participate,” said Littrell. The participants will enter at least one outfit to the show. They can choose to model the looks themselves or have the models exhibit them. Henderson’s Trashion Show will be a friendly competition, and eight adults will be able to vie for the chance to win a $500 Grand Prize. Second place is $250, and People’s Choice Award will be $100. But the day won’t be all about competition. There will also be non-competitive participation as well. “I will be wearing an outfit that I am designing completely out of trash, just for fun. So is Pop Prince, one of our three judges. We’ll also have several other dignitaries and city officials sporting some ‘trashion’ wear,” Littrell said. The Trashion show will be held April 27 at 2 p.m. at Studio 421. Studio 421 is located at 421 North Main Street in Henderson, KY. The show will be a true runway show, and it will be held outside, so those planning to attend should bring chairs or blankets for seating. Admission is completely free. So come out the Trashion Show, and get some idea of what you can do with all of that old stuff that you can’t bear to throw away! 2013 Night Train Tour at The Ford Center Jason Aldean’s 2013 Night Train Tour will be coming to the Ford Center on April 25th, and fans will be excited to learn that Aldean has thought outside the country-music box and added some surprises to his show.

ldean told The Tennessean that he feels like a child at Christmas-time, “I’ve got all kinds of new stuff to play with,” he said. This go-around he had the time and money to put on the spectacular show that he’s been dying to give his fans. On one of the first nights of his Night Train tour, Aldean sold out Madison Square Garden and was feeling pretty good about himself until he saw a banner proclaiming that Sir Elton John has sold out 62 shows there. Although Aldean is really trying to make a name for himself in country music, he isn’t looking to be like fellow country singer Blake Shelton, currently starring on The Voice, and using television to move up the ladder. Although it may be for some people, it is not something Jason says he’ll ever do. In a quote from The Tennessean, Aldean says, “I’d be miserable if I wasn’t out on the road playing my shows.” Jason really likes pushing himself in every way he can, he’s quoted in several articles, as well as on his official website, as saying “I’ve always kind of felt like I had something to prove. It’s what keeps me hungry.” That hunger drives Aldean towards the highintensity, live show that fans will see on this year’s Night Train tour. Aldean has never been one to open up much about his personal life, but he did tell Country Weekly what it was like to be recognized everywhere he goes and protecting his wife and two young girls from crazed fans. He says that being famous has taken a toll on his family and made him a more-than-normal, overly-protective dad and husband. “I don’t want to sound like I’m bitching about [fame]. It’s a good problem to have,” Jason told Country Weekly. Jason Aldean really hit pay-dirt in the country music scene with his 2009 album Wide Open and the release of “Big Green Tractor,” which debuted at number 48 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs. It spent four weeks at number one. According to Aldean’s official website, Jason has sold more than 7 million records, had ten number one songs and this 2011 album My Kinda Party was the top-selling country album of the year. Jason enjoys singing songs to his fans that they can relate to, songs about heartbreak, love and finding the right girl, but what a lot of fans may not know is that while they can relate to Aldean’s songs, they cannot relate to Aldean himself, since the words he sings are not his own. Jason only co-wrote three songs for his self-titled, debut album, and since then has been content to let Nashville’s best songwriters do the rest, he told Taste of Country. He says he still writes whenever he is on the road, but is the most critical of his own writing, and therefore he is the first to refuse to record his own music. Music lovers become so interested in finding bands who write words that he or she can relate to; finding out that your favorite singer does not write his or her own music is like an arrow to the heart—it’s musical heartbreak. Live at the Victory After 15 years of hard work, country act Little Big Town (LBT) received some long-overdue recognition at the recent Grammy Awards, taking home the prize for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for the song Pontoon.

he lead single off the band’s latest release, Tornado, it hit number one last year and helped the album reach gold status after just a few months. We’ll be lucky enough to catch the band at the height of its popularity when the “Tornado Tour” blows through Evansville with special guest David Nail on April 20 at the Victory Theatre. LBT members Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet first got together in 1998 through a shared love of vocal harmonies. With Sweet and Westbrook on guitar and all four members trading lead vocals, the band’s sound quickly took shape. Unfortunately, LBT’s career didn’t take off nearly as fast. After changing record labels several times, they finally achieved chart success with the 2005 album, The Road to Here. It produced two top-ten singles and sold over a million copies. Five years later, the band hit the top-ten again with the single “Little White Church” off 2010’s The Reason Why. Signed to yet another new label, LBT toured heavily in support of the album and started writing songs for last year’s Tornado – fast on its way to becoming the biggest seller of the band’s long career. Despite releasing just two albums so far, special guest David Nail is already a star in his own right. Two monster hits – “Red Light” and “Let It Rain” – have made the golden-voiced Missouri native a regular presence on the country charts. Still, he remains refreshingly down-to-earth. “It sounds like a cliché, but I was born with a gift, I believe, and not many other gifts,” Nail

says with tongue firmly in cheek. “So, I was either going to pursue music and have a chance at being successful or try my hand at something that I had no talent for.” Success in the music business was not as simple as it initially seemed though, a fact that he puts down to youth. “I came to Nashville from a small town in 2002 and got a deal pretty easily. I thought the hard part was over. But I think it was prett y obvious to the people that had invested in me that I wasn’t quite ready,” Nail explains. “It took me a while to figure out what had just happened – it was such a blur. Looking back now, it’s easy to see that I wasn’t mentally prepared.” It would take seven years before Nail officially released his debut album, I’m About to Come Alive, Alive but the wait was clearly worth it. “Red Light,” the second single off the album, was a career-making hit that continues to affect fans emotionally. “Even today, people come up to me and tell me how much they love that song and how much it means to them,” Nail says. But the best was yet to come. “Let It Rain” off 2011’s The Sound of a Million Dreams went all the way to the top of the country charts and the video has racked up millions of views on Youtube. In July of last year, Nail released a three-song digital-only EP titled 1979 that features a sterling cover of Adele’s number one smash, “Someone Like You.” He is absolutely thrilled to be opening for LBT and can’t wait to finish work on his upcoming third album.

s a point guard for Bosse she averaged 18 points per game her senior year but also took a generous stance with the ball. She achieved eight assists on average per game making her fourth all-time in assists in a single season in Indiana Girls Basketball history. Her quick hands were also notorious for steals, racking up and average of six per game placing her as ﬁfth all-time in a single season in the history of Indiana Girls Basketball. With her gift of leadership, ability to take control over the ball no matter the size of the opposition and her unfading work ethic, ‘Koosey’ is an impeccable athlete.

News4U (N4U): Who or what ﬁrst got you into basketball? Janisha ‘Koosey’ Lindsey (JL): My mom, dad, uncles and majority of my older cousins all played basketball, so I followed their footsteps and got into basketball as well.

N4U: If you could pick one player alive or dead to play a game of one-on-one with, who would it be and why? JL: If I could pick one person to play oneon-one with, it would be Delle Donne because she is a great player and also one of my favorites.

N4U: What is one of your best memories tied to basketball? JL: One of my best memories tied to basketball would be winning the sectional title this year with this year’s group of girls and coaching staﬀ.

N4U: What are some of your interests outside basketball? JL: Spending time with family and friends.

N4U: What aspect of your game do you think you can improve? Explain. JL: My left hand, because it’s not as strong as my right and everyone tells me if I get it as strong I would be so much better. N4U: What do you want your future with basketball to be? JL: I plan on furthering my career as far as I can with basketball step by step; possibly the WNBA.

N4U: What do you plan on studying in college? JL: I plan on studying physical science in college.

N4U: Describe the feeling you get after winning a big game. JL: The feeling I get after winning a big game is mutual, I share so much joy but at the same time I cannot settle and be satisﬁed. I do love those feelings. N4U: What advice would you give to someone who wants to get really good at basketball? JL: I would tell them that anything is possible, that it takes time and dedication and if you have that, the sky is the limit for you. I would also tell them no matter what, at any moment, never give up because hard work pays oﬀ. —Nick Durcholz

n April 6th and 7th at the Victory Theatre, Sal Viviano (Sinatra), Nat Chandler (Martin) and Eric Jordan Young (Davis, Jr.) – all talented veterans of Broadway – will recreate the sights and sounds of those remarkable performances. Though the original “Rat Pack” performed over 50 years ago, you will swear that they are alive and well, and more entertaining than ever. Viviano was kind enough to speak with News4U about the upcoming shows and his journey to Broadway. News4U (N4U): You started out as a singer opening for comedians – what was that experience like? Sal Viviano (SV): I was just a teenager at the time working summers as an athletic director at a family resort. At night, they had entertainment and once they found out I could sing, I was asked to open for the comedians. So, my repertoire expanded very quickly – there was a full band, and they wrote out charts for me. It was a fantastic way to learn the Great American Songbook as well as the nightclub business .I learned all about “timing” and how to tell a joke. From there, I started opening for comedians in Chicago, St. Louis, New York – working with legends like Bob Hope and George Goebel. N4U: When did you first become aware of Sinatra? SV: My parents were big opera fans, and they both sang professionally. The only pop music we listened to was Mario Lanza and Robert Goulet – there were no Sinatra albums in the house. I didn’t really know his repertoire that well until about 10 or 12 years ago when I started performing concerts of Broadway standards. I realized that Sinatra had recorded just about every great song written during his era, and that his style really suited my voice. N4U: Was your introduction to Broadway everything you imagined it would be? SV: It was, and it wasn’t. I happened to be in New York at the time that auditions for the Three Musketeers were being held. I tried out and ended up getting flown back seven times for call-backs. I thought, ‘now I know why Broadway shows are so expensive (laughs)!’ But it’s a business, and talent wins out. There’s not a lot of time wasted on people who aren’t willing to work hard. N4U: Did you ever have the opportunity to meet the “Rat Pack?” SV: I actually met Sammy and Dean on different occasions but never did meet Frank, unfortunately. The chemistry and camaraderie between the three of them and their appreciation for each other is what made their performances – especially the Sands Hotel shows – so special. Those guys were true entertainers, and to walk in their shoes for a few hours during a night is a tremendous thrill. I think that fact is evident in the show that we’ll be doing in Evansville. I’m a huge fan of both Nat and Eric – they’re both great guys. On Saturday, April 20th the Junior League of Evansville and the Evansville Morning Rotary are presenting the Rockin’ River City Ride and Battle of the Bands in Downtown Evansville.

5K walk, a 5K and 10K family bike ride and a 25K, 60K and 100K bike ride are the big happenings planned for the day of the Rockin’ River City Ride, a one-day community event beginning in Sunset Park along the Evansville Riverfront. Pre-registration ends on April 10th and is $25 for the individual rider (all distances and all ages) with it going up to $35 after that date, up to the day of the event. Family Ride rates are available at $50 for a family of four with just a $5 fee for each additional family member after that. Your registration includes one free t-shirt, one free admission to the Battle of the Bands, free admission to the bike park and rest stops, free support, a free lunch for all 25K, 60K and 100K riders, free shuttle service and a bike drop oﬀ. Fully stocked rest stops, route support and a bike park with food and merchant vendors will be on hand. A free to the public (you do not have to be registered for the Rockin’ River City Ride to enter) Kid’s Fun Park with bounce houses, games, prizes, face painting, and clowns will be available. It will also include Evan the Otter, the mascot of the Evansville Otters, a bike helmet giveaway and a bike safety presentation. That evening the Battle of the Bands will begin at 5 p.m. at Casino Aztar and is a 21-and-over event with a $10 admission. Voting for bands, of which ﬁve out of the nine initially entered will be in the competition, were held online during the month of March. Voting was based on a submitted song on the event website. At the time of this article, bands entered include Awaken the Giants, Likewise, Unforgettable Summer, Chrono Stellaris, Third Class Steerage, Newhaven, Vintage Rendition, Pillar of Fire and Gentlemen and Scholars. Emcee band is the local group Akacia. Each competing band will have 45 minutes to play at the event with judging split between audience voting and the judges to determine who will win a recording studio package from Moore Music and 77 Recording, a feature article in the May issue of News4U, more media coverage and the title of “Best Band in the Tri-State.” In 2012 the winners were The Dang Heathens, a local favorite and allaround group of interesting, extremely talented and genuinely nice people and musicians. Lead singer of The Dang Heathens, Andy Moore, said of winning the competition, “I felt personally that winning was a tremendous compliment and an honor.” The following is his advice for those competing this year: “I would advise others to play as many shows as possible, because experience is a good way to deal with being nervous onstage. “CKB” is not only what I’ve been waiting for, it’s what we all have been waiting for. I entered a very casual dining establishment and was greeted with gourmet cuisine that had flavor, character and wonderful eye appeal. This was country walls with New York taste! First, a bib salad topped with shaved Bleu Cheese (who does that) had my taste buds satisfied. Then an abundance of roasted Brussel Sprouts, seasoned with soy and garlic and another ingredient for you to figure out. Oh man, they were tasty! Next thing I knew, here come the Scallops. Perfectly seared and the Sweet Corn Truffle Puree was simply the grandest of sauces. After, the New Orleans-Style Shrimp hit me with a bite of salt and sweet. All and all, everything was exactly what it was meant to be, wonderfully delicious. Please, I beg, please try the Kobe Beef Hot Dog and their specialty cocktails. Finally, a gastro pub that we can all enjoy and afford! CKB also offers you small-batch menu features, but when they are gone, they are gone. On a final note, if you are a bourbon fan, the smoked Woodford Reserve (I like to drink my dessert) was the best dessert ever!

This review is on the Kipplee Dip, but I can’t remember the last time I only ordered one thing at a restaurant. For starters, your always fun bar food, fried mushrooms and onion rings. Let me say, these may just be some of the best onion rings around! I love them and you will too. Dip them in ketchup, dip them in horseradish, for gosh sakes dip them in your freaking beer, they are fantastic. As far as the mushrooms go, really, you serve them hot and they are always tasty, and when you put some cocktail sauce on the table, I’m not going be upset. So anyway, let’s get to the dip, shall we. This was another tasty morsel of cuisine. The sandwich approached me, topped with grilled red and green bell peppers and smothered in provolone. Shaved beef underneath, surrounded by a toasty bun. You add a little au-jus and you have just made me a pretty happy man. This sandwich was a solid addition to the always tasty menu at an always friendly and well established, home-town favorite.

here’s no shortage of franchise restaurants in the area, but there are very few that actually originated here. One shining example of a locally-owned business with plans to move into other markets is Salad World. Initially located on the East side, Salad World has since expanded to the North side, West side, Downtown and Newburgh. And considering the success of these locations, the sky is the limit. “We want to try and go to as many places as we can – Indianapolis, St. Louis, Nashville, all the surrounding markets,” explains Ryan Matt, owner of the West side and Downtown locations. “But we want to stay Evansville-based as far as the corporate structure goes.” Ryan and his brother Andy have been involved with Salad World since the beginning. “We started out working for the East side store four years ago. The original owner was looking to franchise out, so we opened the West side location around that time and then the Downtown location a few months ago.” While Salad World’s local roots set it apart from the majority of franchise restaurants in the area, the food is the real difference. “Our philosophy is that we cook everything made-to-order,” says Matt. “All of the salads are prepared fresh – we only use Romaine lettuce. We slice all of our own meats and always use the best ingredients possible for all of our meals.” And now that spring has finally arrived, this fresh, light, healthy approach to food is the perfect antidote to any lingering winter doldrums. Still, Matt stresses that the nutritional value of the Salad World menu doesn’t translate to boring, tasteless food. “Our food is absolutely delicious,” he says. “Some of my favorites are the salmon asparagus, pecan chicken, Mandarin chicken, chef’s club and Greek salads. But we do want people to know that Salad World has so much more to offer. We have amazing, fresh wraps, pitas, sandwiches, homemade soups and potatoes, too.” Another aspect of Salad World that Matt wants to promote is catering. “Especially for employers that are looking for newer, healthier ways to feed their workers, we offer a nice alternative to the usual pizza and hamburger options,” he says. “Just like in our restaurants, we do the catering to order. In fact, we have catered for the National Guard a few times – almost 300 people – so we can handle big orders.”

ith 48 years of cooking experience under his belt, it is more than fair to say the jolly Earl McNary of Mr. Earl’s Soul Food Joint knows how to please through culinary means. Most every customer that strolls into the small, old but cozy building on Riverside is greeted warmly by Mr. Earl himself and wrapped in a soothing blanket of delicious scents from the kitchen. Mr. Earl’s country cooking with a soulful note has been part of the community since 1984 when he opened the very first (of five or six he says) Mr. Earl’s Soul Food Joint. Perhaps, Mr. Earl’s most marked culinary experience is supervising a meal for President John F. Kennedy and 6,000 other guests while in the military. He plans on opening another restaurant soon on Lincoln Avenue to do his part to help excite the stagnancy of culture in Evansville’s black community. Entering the ‘joint’ on Riverside, I immediately noticed the eclectic but simple décor, family photos, sentimental knick-knacks, brightly-colored tablecloths decked out with white flowers, but most importantly, the feeling of comfort. It was warm and welcoming like my grandmother’s dining room. When Mr. Earl was ready to serve for the day he stacked a rectangular plate for me with most every offering of the day. After grabbing utensils and a beverage, I promptly dug into the Mac & Cheese because it caught my eye with its deep yellowish, orange hue. It was packed with flavor. The amount of cheese was perfectly balanced, not too rich and it held a slight spiciness that really upped the ante. This side is a great way to relive some childhood memories. Next I tried the Greens, they were a great mix of earthy and savory tones with a tiny bit of spice that marinated on the palate and faded into a very pleasant aftertaste. Right next to

the Greens was the Cabbage. The cabbage was a bit crunchier than the Greens and packed a more powerful earthy flavor. It was a bit of an acquired taste and texture at first but then a subtle spiciness came out of the blue and made it interesting. Then I moved to the section of my tray where Mr. Earl had placed all the meats he had prepared for the day. I tried the Pepper Steak first; it was incredibly tender and savory. Next was the Meatloaf. This dish is the definition of comfort food. It was rich and savory, definitely not a light dish but intensely flavorful. I could pick out each flavor too, the tangy tomato sauce, the onions and the tender, savory beef. After the Meatloaf, I tried my personal favorite: the Pork Cutlet. The mild flavor of the pork was catapulted by the light, flaky but savory breading, and then a hint of sweetness brought it around full circle. Lastly, I dove into a section of Mr. Earl’s Barbeque Ribs. They were smoky and tender, a perfect texture with an earthy element offset by the sweetness of the sauce. This dish is a flavor carnival. I feel I have to mention the crown jewel of Mr. Earl’s desserts: the Chess Pie. It is velvety in texture and holds a nutty sweetness with tones of caramel and toffee. It is extremely flavorful but also fairly light. Though I had a full lunch experience at Mr. Earl’s, there are many more soul-satisfying dishes in his repertoire. So stop by to enjoy simple, great-tasing food and to say hello! —Nick Durcholz

KB (Commonwealth Kitchen & Bar) is a gastropub located in Henderson, KY. By definition, a gastro-pub is a word to describe a bar that serves high-quality food. The building at 108 2nd Street that houses CKB is the closest building to the river and was built in the late 1800’s. There you will find an industrial vibe with a cozy, big city feel. The food is served on small plates and sharing plates with the diners in your party is encouraged. Some typical fare includes Brussel sprouts (CKB will make a believer out of people claiming to not like them), roasted cauliflower, Wagu beef, truffle ravioli over corn roasted truffle purée, bib lettuce salad and chocolate ravioli for dessert. They also offer larger plate options as well as kid friendly fare. CKB is co-owned by Chef Jayson Munoz and Henderson native Dr. Mark Logan. Munoz is originally from Glenwood Springs, CO, but was raised in St. Louis. Though not a classically trained chef, Munoz has worked for Macaroni Grill and is also the current owner of Kanpai Sushi Asian Bistro in Evansville. Both Munoz and Logan enjoy traveling and the love of food. Munoz shares, “We wanted to open a kind place where we would eat and seek out when we are traveling.” He also shares, “I love trying new things, cooking new things and letting

I keep my passion because I like trying new things and love sharing them.” CKB aims to give its patrons a comfortable, casual and inviting environment. The building is more than 100 years old and boasts twelveand-a-half-foot tin ceilings as well as exposed brick walls giving it an industrial, early Amercian feel. Repurposed and reclaimed items are also common throughout the restaurant. From the antique bookshelf from a Nashville flea market used as the back bar, to the 1930’s French Tolix stools used as bar stools, the venue brings new meaning to the phrase ‘an eye for detail.’ They have also worked to tie in other decorative items with the cultural and historic feel of Henderson County. In terms of food, Munoz’s favorite dish at CKB is the New Orleans shrimp. He shares, “We had a bone marrow feature last weekend. No one for 90 miles does bone morrow. Foodies will love us!” The fine dining atmosphere of CKB also includes a bar with around 50 craft beers, specialty mixed cocktails and generally five to six different red wines. CKB additionally smokes its own Woodford Reserve Bourbon. For the lunch crowd, CKB offers an express lunch that includes a drink and has over 140 different combinations that you can choose from. For dinner, Munoz says, “Come and sit down to order a few small plates and experience some new things with the people you enjoy. [We’re] only 12 minutes from the east-side of Evansville and even closer from downtown. hy do you run? For your health? For a personal best? For a cure? Whatever your reason, passion or mission is, get ready to run on April 13th in the final and longest race of the 2013 Romain Subaru Screaming Eagles Running Series. Open to runners of all ages, the Spring into Fitness run will take participants on a scenic route including USI’s campus and Burdette Park. Early registration is $20. Late registration will be $25 after April 6th. There will be a free race open to children 12 and under. There will also be a funfest for both children and adults from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. Proceeds from this event will go toward scholarships and professional development funds for USI’s Sport Management program. Packet pick-up will take place at the Recreation and Fitness Center at USI on Friday night before the race from 5-8 p.m. and on Saturday morning of the race starting at 7:30 a.m. Awards are given to the top three in all divisions as well as the overall male and female. Additional awards include the top challenged athlete and participation medals for all kid’s runs. Don’t forget to wear your favorite hippie attire, as the most far out awards are given for the cutest couple and most creative family. Run for your heart. Run for your head. Run because you love it. ombining two centuries of architectural designs and home furnishings, historic Newburgh, Indiana will host the 15th annual Homes of Note House Tour. Five residents near the Ohio River will graciously open their doors to visitors on Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exterior and interior décor may vary but the one thing all homes have in common is their uniqueness and a beautiful panoramic view of the Ohio River. A condo in the former Methodist Episcopal Church boasts a stained glass window and a winding staircase. Build in 1840 with an 1890 addition, a cedar clapboard home has a piano once owned by actor Vincent Price. Enter one residence from the street or through the garden with both affording views of the Ohio. In an ultramodern home, the owners display a variety of artifacts and a Star Wars collection. The owner’s artistry is displayed on white walls in a home that is entered through the back door as the front faces the river. A free shuttle will run between the Newburgh Elementary School and downtown. —Julie Mallory

The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus are presenting Verdi Requiem at the Victory Theatre in Downtown Evansville on Saturday, April 27th at 7 p.m. Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem (Latin for “rest” or “repose” and known as a Roman Catholic Mass of or for the dead) was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and writer much loved by Verdi. It was first performed publicly in 1874 and contains several instantly and widely recognizable pieces of music used in many contemporary films and television. The experience of hearing and witnessing Requiem in concert will take the listener through themes of life, death, Heaven, Hell, joy, regret, judgment, mercy and forgiveness in an unforgettably beautiful testament to the gorgeous heights and depths of the human vocal range. Passion 2013: Let the Future Begin

ick up your guitars and I will make you fishers of men! The Passion 2013 Tour embodies the greatest calling of mankind, the Good Word! Fresh from a crowd of 60,000 in the Georgia Dome, the movement renews in continued celebration of its recent album release, Passion: Let the Future Begin Tour. Sound big? It is. At the time of this article the album sits at #8 in the world on iTunes Charts. Pastor Louie Giglio of Passion City Church in Atlanta kindled the Passion movement back in 1997. According to Giglio, the cornerstone of their purpose is, “...uniting students in worship and prayer for spiritual awakening in this generation.” By 2008, Passion spread from Texas to Tennessee, California to Boston, then London to Sydney and even Paris to Hong Kong. Sound too big for CFC in Evansville? It’s not. Singer/Songwriter Kristian Stanfill leads the worship band playing at CFC, whose album reached #64 on Billboard 200. Vanderburgh Medical Alliance 's 26th Annual

f you love fashion and supporting a good cause, The Vanderburgh Medical Alliance has the perfect event for you. The organization will host its 26th Annual Style Show, “I’m Every Woman,” Thursday, April 18 at the Evansville Airport Holiday Inn Ballroom. “I’m Every Woman” will raise money to beneﬁt many important local charities. Those charities include Meals on Wheels, Ark Crisis Child Care Center, Smile and Lampion Center. The money raised from the show will also go towards scholarships for students working toward careers in various medical professions. The fashion show is the area’s longest running philanthropic event of its kind. The Style Show will include fashions from locally-owned shops including The Graceful Lady, House of Bluez, Victoria’s Boutique, Wildﬂower and Brinker’s Jewelers. A widerange of women’s clothing will be showcased. Doors will open at 10 a.m. on April 18. There will be a silent auction featuring items such as a Mary Kay product basket, ThirtyOne products, a rug donated by the Rug Gallery of Newburgh, jewelry and much more. The 26th Annual Style Show will begin after the silent auction, and lunch will be served during the show. Evansville’s Gina Moore will be providing entertainment for the show, which will be emceed by 14 News’ Jackie Moore. —Lauren VanCleve

y the time a child is born, usually 20 primary (baby teeth) have formed inside the gums. Typically the front two lower and from two upper teeth begin to appear between six and twelve months. Most kids have 20 primary teeth by the time they reach age three. Tooth decay (cavities) can occur as soon as the teeth erupt and appear in a baby’s mouth. A misconception among some parents is to not be concerned about decay in baby teeth since they will be replaced. But the fact is decay in primary (baby) teeth may damage the permanent teeth. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend a child’s first dental visit occur within six months after the baby’s first tooth appears. When a child reaches toddler age, it is a good time to have the dentist check for habits, such as thumb sucking, that may cause problems in a child’s mouth as they grow and their teeth form. Another common situation is when fruit juice given to the child in a bottle or sippy cup. Sugar from the juice stays on the primary teeth and forms an acid which causes tooth decay. —Dr. J. Alex Rang Try the following tips: Schedule first appointment between the arrival of the first baby tooth and the child’s first birthday, make sure the child is well-rested for the appointment, don’t pass anxiety to the child, reassure the child the dentist will help them and don’t use bribery or punishment.

N4U: You create corn-hole boards, is that a personal hobby for you? How big is the market for customized sets? SW: The corn-hole boards just happened. A guy I went to high school with contacted me on Facebook asking what I would charge to do a design on his boards. I painted them, and after I posted the pictures on Facebook, other people contacted me about sets. Each set I have done, I made changes to make them better. Now my boards are artwork. N4U: Who would you say is your primary influence in the art world? SW: I’m not sure who I would say is my primary influence. I appreciate all art and all the different styles of artists.

N4U: Do you have any upcoming, local exhibitions? If so, when and where will they be? SW: I do not have any upcoming exhibitions that I can think of. News4U (N4U): When did you decide you wanted to be an artist and what types of art do you work with? Steven Wargel (SW): When I was a child, I was always drawing, making and modify things and was told I had a wild imagination. All through grade school and high school, I was in art classes. After high school, I stopped, but I’m not sure why. In 2011, I attended Ivy Tech for two semesters for graphic design. A drawing for visualization class got me back into art. In November 2011, I started CHZL. I do acrylic paintings, both detailed and abstract. I also work with graphic design, drawing and charcoals.

ver the last decade, the sight of just two musicians on stage – typically a drummer and guitarist – has become commonplace. Acts like the White Stripes and the Black Keys have changed the perception of what constitutes a ‘band’ and helped make it possible to circumvent the normal route to a record deal. With local roots and a devoted fan base in Nashville, musicians Chris Tapp and Brian Mullins – better known as the Cold Stares – are heading down that back road. Tapp and Mullins formed the Cold Stares back in 2008 after a period of mutual musical burn-out. As Tapp tells it, the initial idea was simply to get together and ‘jam.’ “We had no inclination that we were going to do anything with the material or play out,” he explains. That all changed with a well-received show at the Duck Inn. “The response was immediate – completely the opposite of the acoustic shows I had been playing on my own. People were really listening to us,” says Tapp. Between Mullins’ explosive drumming and Tapp’s wallof-sound guitar (conjured from a complex four- output system that allows him to handle lead, rhythm and bass – seemingly all at once), the duo kicked up a major musical storm that left audience members scouring the stage for hidden members. Their Black Crowes-meetsBlack Sabbath approach laid waste to expectations. “People always think we’re going to be like Simon and Garfunkel,” laughs Tapp, “until everything kicks in, and the amps vibrate our drinks right oﬀ the top.” The big break for the Cold Stares came in 2010 when Tapp and Mullins entered a battle of the bands at the Hard Rock Café in Nashville and won, beating out a long list of talented area bands and ultimately placing second nationally. Tapp remains typically humble about the experience. “We REALLY had no idea we were going to win, because all of the bands in the ﬁnals we’re so good,” he says. Humility aside, the recognition resulted in numerous interview requests and television opportunities, including an appearance on Fox TV in Nashville. The logical next step was to record an album and sign to a label; several companies expressed interest including Capitol and Hollywood Records. But after cutting a slew of blistering tracks in just two days and weighing all of the contract options, Tapp received some disturbing medical news: he had skin cancer. All band activity was shelved for 12 months as Tapp endured chemotherapy treatments and an uncertain future. Thankfully, he now appears to be

on the road to recovery. “I’m doing really well,” he says with obvious relief. “I’ve received a clean bill of health with all my scans lately, so hopefully, I’ve whipped this thing and I can get it all behind me.” Not all the time spent fighting cancer was lost, though. Tapp and Mullins wrote a whole new batch of songs, and the previous recordings were released as the album A Cold Wet Night and a Howling Wind which charted in the top 20 Amazon blues chart for over five months. A new album is scheduled to be recorded soon, and the duo is on the verge of a publishing deal that should open even more doors in the music industry. “We’ve spent five years trying not to be rock stars,” says Tapp, “but we’re going to hit it as hard as we can now. This island beer sports a slightly cloudy but vivid, auburn hue. The olfactory side of it is light, flowery and clean with the hops present in the background. A very balanced scent. The first taste is surprisingly earthy but smooth, again the hops make themselves know but in the most delicate and balanced of ways. This brew manages substantial flavor and a beautifully smooth texture at the same time. It is very capable of offering ultimate spring refreshment.

This brew is certainly an eruption of ﬂavor. Nice copper, amber hue as it hits the glass. This is an amazing intermingling of taste and smoothness. Roasty caramel malt and spicy herbal hops. One of the best beers I have had in a long time, from a terriﬁc brewery, I look forward to seeing more great things from these Islanders.

The pour has a really sunny disposition, very transparent bright yellow. The nose is extremely grainy which follows through with the taste, complemented with a citrus sweetness. Little mild on the alcohol level, but I could see it as a decent brew when the sun is beating down. But like they say “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.” This is a bright, golden beer with a slight haze to it. I could smell some malt and grains with a slight scent of citrus. It has a nice, light grainy ﬂavor with a bit of lemon. This is a great summer beer because it was very crisp, somewhat light and refreshing to drink after mowing the lawn.

The color of this brew is liquid gold, a true testament to the season it is named after. The scent is a subtle yet sharp malt, the barley is refined and lulls like a hundred piece orchestra. The first pull really showcases the barley but after another two sips the barley collapses upon itself and only a bitterness and a very mild malt remain. As a whole this beer is smooth and refreshing as a summer brew should be, it makes a great first impression but finishes slightly above average.

A fat head is not usually a nickname any would saddle ones self with. I can only imagine that this large cranium would be hoisted up as a challis between the shoulders of an ego that could not be contained in the skull alone, left to overﬂow its ingredients rich with the aroma and taste of hops and grapefruit. The nose is very citrus-pine, with a golden straw hue to the pour and very sharp when it hits the tongue.

This is a clear, amber beer with a strong citrus aroma. I could smell some caramel malt but not much. It did have an abundance of strong hop ﬂavors as IPA’s do, matched with the heavy bitterness. I would consider this the average IPA but it does have 7.5 % ABV, so that made it a little more interesting.

The color of this beer is a translucent amber with a brown tinge. As with most every IPA it has a noticeable funk to it but the hops are more moderate as opposed to heavy and overwhelming. The ﬁrst swill however, packs more of aq punch than I was expecting. It is bold but not unpleasant. It is a no frills IPA, proud of what it is and it is executed well. The hops come out strong but ﬁnish smooth. An IPA lover would really enjoy this one.

This ale has a very dark pour as its coﬀee and chocolate counterparts. The beans have a rather dominant taste. The ﬂavors converge with an array of sweet bitterness and warmth. At 10% ALC/VOL on the Richter scales. It doesn’t hit hard or heavy but it will sneak up on you, like that dark brown river in Willie Wonka’s factory may take you on a intoxicating strange journey, you may or not be ready for.

This brew boasts a sultry, deep brown hue with a moderate cloudiness. The smell of this beer is like wrapping yourself in bed sheets straight out of the dryer, ultimately comforting. The first taste comes off a bit strong, the coffee flavor knocks you off your feet but gets progressively tolerable; the chocolate comes in with a slight sweetness to balance the bitterness of the coffee. This is an ideal dark brew, bold and smooth.

Carved directly in stone, my work combines traditional carving techniques with contemporary art ideas such as public interaction and appropriation. While my main means of production is carving, I do not limit my efforts to a single “signature” medium. Instead, I move between various media such as glass, stone, paper, metal and sand. My art is unique on many levels. For example, in the Roliquery series, every image carved is either in the negative, which when printed becomes positive, or vice versa. The carved stone is a tool in the creation of an image, rather than being simply a singular art object; it impresses the fluid and fugitive sand with an image from the fixed and permanent stone. By interacting with my carvings people are moved from passive consumption of art as commodity to an active contemplation of contemporary art with a playful touch.

"The Acoustic Sessions" Live at the Centre

One of the biggest bands in Christian music is coming to the Centre on April 11th.

ormed in 1999 in Daytona Beach, Fla. by youth pastor Mark Hall, Casting Crowns is out on the road promoting The Acoustic Sessions: Volume One. The album puts a fresh spin on many of the band’s biggest hits and also includes two new tracks to hold fans over. In addition to lead vocalist Hall, the current line-up of Casting Crowns also features drummer Brian Scoggin, bassist Chris Huffman, keyboardist Megan Garrett, violinist Melodee DeVevo and guitarists Juan DeVevo and Josh Mix. It’s an eclectic group of musicians (the majority of which have been playing together for nearly 15 years) that really gels in a live setting and always delivers an uplifting show. The band released its self-titled debut album in 2003 after being signed to Sawyer Brown lead singer Mark Miller’s label, Beach Street Records. Casting Crowns quickly took off and raced up the Christian music charts, spawning several enormous hits, including “Voice of Truth” which spent an astounding 14 weeks at number one. Undaunted by the prospect of following up a record-breaking debut, the band next released Lifesong in 2006. It featured no less than three careerdefining singles: “Lifesong,” “Praise You in this Storm” and “Does Anybody Hear Her?” The album earned Casting Crowns a Grammy and widened the band’s fan base beyond the Christian music market – so much so that 2007’s The Altar and the Door debuted at number two on the Billboard Top 200. Even more impressive, the single “East to West” shattered the band’s previous record of 14 weeks at the top of the Christian music charts by claiming the top spot for a near-ridiculous 19 weeks. Casting Crowns released two more albums: 2009’s Until the Whole World Hears and 2011’s Come to the Well, which continued the band’s domination of the Christian music charts and achieved further crossover success. truly great American actor with an enduring career spanning seven decades, Hal Holbrook will take to the Centre stage on April 5th to reprise his beloved Mark Twain Tonight! one-man show. Remarkably, Holbrook ﬁrst performed solo as Twain back in 1954 at Lock Haven State Teachers College. Television legend Ed Sullivan took notice and later featured the actor on his show, giving Holbrook invaluable national exposure. Soon, he was performing Mark Twain Tonight! Off-Broadway. The success of that production led to a run on Broadway in 1966 that has continued intermittently ever since. While Holbrook may be best known for his solo Twain shows, he has also appeared in many highly acclaimed ﬁlms including All the President’s Men, Into the Wild, Water for Elephants and the recent Spielberg-directed Lincoln. His numerous television roles include a CBS-produced Mark Twain Tonight! (which earned him an Emmy), North and South and a stint on the popular FX series Sons of Anarchy. Few actors have been able to sustain such an impressive career arc as Holbrook. Certainly, his longrunning, one-man Mark Twain show is a testament to his talent. These performances have been seen the world over by people from all backgrounds, all of whom delight in Holbrook’s wry, comedic depiction of one of America’s most revered writers.

Oblivion Universal Studios Earth, 2073. Sixty years ago (in 2013), a savage alien race known as “Scavs” nearly destroyed humanity. Salvation forced us to evacuate Earth’s entire population. All that remain are some security drones that “mop up” hostile life forms, a repairman named Jack Harper, and a dark, unfathomable secret that left untold, causes Earth to fade into mere memory. Tom Cruise snagged the role of Jack Harper, which was originally written for a younger actor. Morgan Freeman plays Malcolm Beech, a 102-year-old insurgent leader who captures Harper and opens his eyes to our planet’s secret, and to why it is being so easily forgotten. Andrea Riseborough (Shadow Dancer) lands the part of Victoria, Harper’s main squeeze and co-worker - that is until the crash landing of mysterious Julia, played by Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace). After Julia’s arrival, Jack’s memories unravel a different reality. Harper literally comes down from the clouds and plummets back onto (and into) our hellish Earth, where a journey of selfdiscovery ignites his passion not only for enigmatic Julia, but for his fellow mankind. Story creator Joseph Kosinski originally wrote and passed this script around Hollywood in graphic novel format while he was directing Tron: Legacy. The graphic novel was never completed, but the script sold anyway. Disney outbid competitors only to drop it later because of the PG-13 rating. Universal Studios picked it up and completed what they call, “...one of the most beautiful scripts we’ve ever come across,” courtesy of co-writers Karl Gajdusek (Trespass) and Michael Arndt (Brave).

To the Wonder Redbud Pictures Oklahoma: a windy place known for its dust storms and tornadoes. What drives writer/director Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line) to write about and film his new movie in the finger-pointing, red-dirt state? Ben Affleck lands the part of Neil. Neil is an American in Paris, where he meets and falls in love with single mother Marina (Olga Kurylenko, Quantum of Solace). They move to Oklahoma with her young daughter to start a new life. After the relationship fizzles, Neil reconnects with childhood sweetheart, Jane (Rachel McAdams, The Notebook). Marina befriends Father Quintana (Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men), a struggling priest and fellow exile. What occurs after that is, well, the title speaks for itself. Christian Bale was originally cast as Neil but dropped out. Screening audiences at the Venice Film Festival laughed when Javier Bardem appeared on-screen. I suppose the thought of Anton Chigurh as a priest was a bit much for them? Judging from the trailers, the film’s imagery and score blend passionately enough to bring the little hairs up on the back of your neck. Better or worse, movie-goers will find this film less theater-y and more abstract and cinematic. In fact, Malick filmed without a script, a decision that risks being out of touch with the character’s feelings, and trying harder to reach out and touch the audience. Can Malick pull it off, or will the story be as lonesome and restless as an Oklahoma tumbleweed?

Breaking Dawn: Part 2 Summit Entertainment

This month, the fifth and final film of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn: Part 2, was released onto DVD, which made more than just one generation of women happy. The final film starts off with new vampire, Bella (played by Kristen Stewart), awakening to discover her heightened senses and new found strength and speed. Upon remembering the birth of her daughter Renesmee, Bella immediately asks to see her only to find that the two-day-old baby has a mouthful of teeth and communicates with others by touch. The Cullen’s, amazed by the baby’s growth search for information on how this half-vampire, half-human child can possibly exist. However, when the Volturi, the leaders of all vampires, discover the existence of the child it is assumed that an immortal child has been made, which is against vampire law. So, the Volturi set out for Forks, Washington, to destroy the child and her makers. When Alice (played by Ashley Greene) has a vision of the Volturi coming for them, the Cullen’s separate into pairs seeking out fellow vampires to stand behind them and bear witness to Rensemee’s mortal side. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg had a surprise up her sleeve that threw the entire audience for a loop. Compared to how boring the final novel was Rosenberg and director Bill Condon knew just how to spice things up. However, the amazing special effects used to create the final battle do not excuse the fact that baby Renesmee was made purely of computer graphics. Not only did I about fall out of my chair laughing when the baby first came into view, but I do not know how anyone could have even thought she could pass as a realistic looking baby. (It is easier to believe Yoda exists.) Yes, I was a geek who bought this film the day it was released, but, in my honest opinion, if you have not seen the Twilight saga, I think it is about time.

Rise of the Guardians Paramount Pictures

With an all-star cast including Chris Pine (Star Trek) as Jack Frost, Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) as a Russian Santa Clause, Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) as the Boogieman, Isla Fisher (Confessions of a Shopaholic) as the Tooth Fairy, and Hugh Jackman (Real Steel) as an Australian Easter Bunny, how can any animated film go wrong!? The central story of the film is how the guardians fight to protect the children of the world from the Boogieman. He has taken over the Sandman’s dreams and replaced them with nightmares, putting fear into the heads of every boy and girl. With only fear in their hearts, the children cannot believe in Santa, or the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny, and therefore, these childhood mystical creatures will slowly cease to exist, as will their joyous holidays. A side-story in the movie focuses on the central character Jack Frost. Frost is marked by the Man in the Moon to become the next guardian, but before he can accept one of the most important jobs in the world, Frost must go on his own internal journey to discover how and why he became Jack Frost, and who he was in his life before. Behind the awe-inspiring animation was a very intriguing story. My kids really enjoyed it and I enjoyed watching it with them; it’s a great family film.

ABOUT THE BAND:

Tellitron is a primarily faceless, one-man band currently based in Evansville. Using substandard equipment, he writes and records music that confuses the average human. He is known to stare at the walls for hours at a time. WHAT THEY COVER:

Tellitron has an aversion to cover songs as he finds it difficult to play them all the way through without a mistake. Therefore, he sticks to original material that he only occasionally duffs. Admittedly, his definition of “occasionally” is very loose. THEIR INFLUENCES:

Tellitron is a huge fan of the musical period from about 1976-1983 – bands such as Devo, Killing Joke, The Church, Joy Division and Wall of Voodoo, just to name a few. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES:

Tellitron has played in Seattle and Illinois over the last few years but has no Evansville shows scheduled at the moment. However, he can occasionally be spotted playing alongside local ace musician Tony Aiken at the Penny Lane coffee house. cd reviews Drowning Pool Resilience Eleven Seven Music 3 stars

It’s no coincidence that Drowning Pool’s new album is titled Resilience. Despite featuring a diﬀerent singer for nearly every release, the band has continued producing hits. It’s diﬃcult to think of another group that has changed ranks so often and still retained a following. Perhaps, it’s the fans that are truly resilient – but their faith may be tested with the arrival of new front man Jason Moreno. Whether in full-on scream mode or attempting balladry, Moreno comes across more as a serviceable metal karaoke singer rather than a band leader. And as for the lyrics….’I’m gonna live my life like it’s Saturday night/sleep when I’m dead and buried/Sunday I’ll say I’m sorry’ from the Kiss-inspired lead single “Saturday Night” pretty much says it all. To be fair though, Drowning Pool is appreciated more for the force of the music than the lyrical content, and Resilience contains several double-kick drum rockers like “Anytime Anyplace,” “One Finger and a Fist” and “Life of Misery.” The band also gets emotional with the Alice in Chains-esque “Bleed with You,” “In Memory of” and “Skip to the End” – all competent metal anthems that just might tug at the heart strings enough to keep the fans invested.

Jacob Jones

Good Timin’ in Waynetown Electric Western Records 4/5

Jacob Jones is old school. His musical style harkens back to the sound of the 50’s and 60’s – original rock and roll based on the 12 bar blues progression, doo-wop and even a hint of Dixieland. And yet, Good Timin’ in Waynetown somehow manages to sound completely contemporary. The key to the album’s success is Jones’ voice – it possesses real character and strength, drawing the listener into the storytelling of each song. The title track swings with the best of them and charms with lyrics like ‘We’re going to ﬁnd a little trouble tonight/ we’re getting dressed up to get dressed down.’ “Lost on the Ohio” slows the tempo with a Fats Domino piano blues that still lifts the spirits. Elsewhere, “Tennessee Highway” restores the pace with a Chuck Berry “Johnny B. Goode” riﬀ and a bit of life in the fast lane, while “A Little More Time” is a classic working-man’s tale: ‘Well, darling, come on, it’s Friday night/I know everything is gonna be all right/with that new dress on, we’re goin’ out tonight.’ Good Timin’ in Waynetown never loses focus. All 10 songs hit their mark and then step out of the spotlight on cue.

Frontier Ruckus

Eternity of Dimming Quite Scientiﬁc Records 3.5 The only artistic challenge as daunting for a band as making a lucid, unpretentious concept album is making a cohesive, entertaining double album. And Frontier Ruckus apparently did not get the ‘less is more’ memo; the boys were clearly too busy recording. Indeed, Eternity of Dimming drones on for far too long – a fact that lessens the impact of some great songs along the way. As is the case with so many double albums, this one would have made for a fantastic single album. It’s not that the songs aren’t well-written - to the contrary, the alt-country feel is expertly achieved with a sharp mix of banjo, acoustic/electric guitar and occasional strings. It’s just that it all sounds quite similar. The tempo rarely budges from a lazy, Neil Young Harvest-era beat, and the chord progressions – while quite pleasing – seem quite monotonous by the end. With all that in mind, there’s still no denying the songwriting talent at work. “I Met Rebecca,” “Birthday Girl,” “Nightmares of Space” and “Careening Catalog Immemorial” are just a few examples of Frontier Ruckus at its best – taking cues from the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Uncle Tupelo and the aforementioned Neil Young. There’s a lot to like about Eternity of Dimming, but a little less would have been nice.

Super Water Sympathy

Hydrogen Child In Music We Trust Records 3.5 The members of Louisiana-based Super Water Sympathy (SWS) describe their sound as ‘water pop.’ It’s a fairly bold move to coin a new genre – as if the music you create is so unique it cannot be categorized within the context of current trends – but SWS just about pulls it oﬀ. Regardless of the semantics, Hydrogen Child’s mix of chimes, strings, piano and jangling guitar is undiluted pop music with a strict focus on melody – and singer Ansley Hugh. Her vocals are a reassuring blend of today’s female stars like KT Tunstall, Sara Bareillis and even The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O. She never misses a note and - somewhat distractingly at times - almost never stops singing. That’s a shame, because SWS’s ‘water pop’ is often even more engaging instrumentally, but that side of the band only occasionally receives the spotlight. The best tracks here are “Pipe Dream” and “Uh Oh!” The former sounds like a darker version of Katy Perry’s “Firework,” while the latter bears more than a passing resemblance to Of Monsters and Men. “When You’re not Around” and “Magnolia Parade” feature stark, moody piano progressions that recall Adele’s smash “Someone Like You” and achieve nearly the same emotional impact. Call it what you will, SWS’s sound is infectious, plain and simple. —Thomas Ellis

Lajon and the crew have returned, namely guitarist Clint Lowery who took a six year albescence from the band. The single “Decay” totally resurrects the aggressive, sludgy jerk-rock spirit of the band. The vocals throughout are tinged with melancholia but remain passionate and edgy. Most importantly, Sevendust returns to their melodic roots with this album, especially in the track “Picture Perfect.” The second half of the album is more interesting (blues riffs?!) than the first but as a whole this is a solid offering.

Matt & Kim Lightning Fader Label

This album is the fourth go-around for the quirky duo. The album is a curious landscape of clicks, chimes, synths and showers of “oohs” and “ahhs.” The sometimes campy, bright tones create an eﬀervescent energy that is quite infectious. As the album progresses, Matt ’s voice starts to get very irritating, the tone rarely changes and the lyrics are too repetitive. Eventually, the soul-less manufactured beat drowns out all else for the listener. This one needs tone and rhythm variety.

The Color Pharmacy

Self-Titled Self-Released

This trio from Minneapolis is a cool as a northern winter. This album, their sophomore effort follows their debut album Texatonka released in 2011. The vocals are reminiscent of 90’s alt-rock, hallowed and soulful but can also be lighter and playful. The instrumentation is bluesy, slightly quirky, driven but also very chill. The transition of the rhythms is refreshing and seamless. This album is a wellbalanced and attention-grabbing. Be sure to check out the single oﬀ the album, “Aperture.”

Tomb Raider

ne of the most prolific series in video game history has recently been excavated from its own crypt, done up with a slick new sheen, dragged through the dirt and injected with a healthy dose of fear. For 17 years, the buxom adventurer Lara Croft has fought re-animated skeletons, navigated puzzling underground terrain and uncovered timeless treasure, all the while keeping her sass, smarts and short shorts. In the newest installment, much has changed and in a good way. The new Tomb Raider focuses on a young, curious Lara Croft, head full of grandiose ideas and dreams. The player experiences raw emotion first-hand from Lara as she is molded through pain, fear and the elements. The young Lara spawns true empathy and is much easier to take seriously than the Barbie-esque heroine of old. This is Tomb Raider with teeth. Suspense abounds as cut-scenes and gameplay seamlessly intertwine with each other which kept me immersed and entertained. The environments were striking and detailed and the lighting was very complex. Lara’s movements felt natural and the controls were very manageable throughout the game. You could even explore solely to find a large variety of collectables. You can also hunt, which is thrilling thanks to a precise, quick and simple bow & arrow targeting system. The game’s upgrade and experience system is embedded perfectly and stylishly into the game. The player builds up three categories: Survivor, Hunter and Brawler. From the same menu you can also modify weapons, fast-travel and manage inventory. In a favorite scene of mine, Lara gets stuck in a bear trap then hears blood-curdling howls nearby. She prepped her bow, then I took over with nothing but tall grass in front of me, wolves suddenly erupted from the foliage like savage, toothy shadows. I had to dispatch them in midair lunge to prevent myself from becoming dog food. In my experience with the game, I only noticed a couple flaws. The first was some cheesy, sub-par voice acting and the second was a feeling of being detached and distracted by all the little things to do besides the primary objective. All-in-all the rebooted Tomb Raider is fun, exciting and very well done. Make a date to get to know the real Lara!

Could this be a joke?

I asked myself on a Saturday morning in February. ‘Someone must have hacked into Maker’s Mark Bourbon’s newsletter list and sent this to all the ambassadors.’ I read it again in disbelief:

We wanted you to be the first to know that, after looking at all possible solutions, we’ve worked carefully to reduce the alcohol by volume (ABV) by just 3%. This will enable us to maintain the same taste profile and increase our limited supply so there is enough Maker’s Mark to go around, while we continue to expand the distillery and increase our production capacity. We have both tasted it extensively, and it’s completely consistent with the taste profile our founder/dad/grandfather, Bill Samuels, Sr., created nearly 60 years ago. We’ve also done extensive testing with Maker’s Mark drinkers, and they couldn’t tell a difference.

ecause I have a direct line to the President of Maker’s Mark on the red wax phone in my office, I call with Rob Samuels, COO of Maker’s Mark. “Rob, I received an email that isn’t making sense, is this true?” As a journalist, I always want to know before going to press. Rob confirms the announcement is true and offers an explanation of how demand for Maker’s has increased dramatically over the last several years. The only thing that can be added to Bourbon when it comes out of the barrel is water. The company now believes that adding a little more water proofing it from 45% (90 proof) to 42% (84 proof) will help them satisfy a little more demand. While we have noticed the popularity of Maker’s Mark increasing over 8 years, we’ve never had difficulty finding Maker’s Mark in stores. However, perhaps someone has… At the same time, we our coverage of the Maker’s Mark proof story becomes one of the hottest reports people have ever read and commented on at BourbonBlog.com. We were getting several hundred Tweets an hour at @BourbonBlog all demanding Maker’s Mark return to 90 proof. Finally, several evenings later as the new Maker’s Mark bottles at 43% hit the shelves; a friend from Owensboro brings me some to try. On a blind taste comparison, I taste the difference right away. In the end, about a week later after the first announcement, Maker’s changes their minds to satisfy consumers.

So what made Maker’s Mark change their mind? The power of social media has more than just a little to do with it. Jack Daniels reduced their ABV down to 40 (80 proof) in the 1990’s before we all had the ability to witness live complaints and the inﬂuence of Facebook, Twitter and the many other websites, in addition to BourbonBlog.com who took the consumers seriously. Some inside un-named sources tell BourbonBlog. com that 4 million negative Tweets were blasted across Twitter encouraging Maker’s Mark to change their minds. While some big name distillers and consumers have privately shared with me that they believe it was a marketing ploy to get people talking about Maker’s Mark, it seems diﬃcult to believe Maker’s would do that. I invite you to listen to our radio podcast interviews with Rob and Bill Samuels, Jr on BourbonBlog.com during that week giving updates about the issue. They deny any marketing ploys and sincerely raise a glass toasting to their consumers who spoke up. We don’t predict any brands will be changing proof again anytime soon.
