An essential part of the grunge movement of the 90 's but tinged with sludgy metal and sorrowful acoustics, Alice in Chains came from dark times to again rouse emotions and rock the faces off of old and new fans.

I

t all began in Seattle in 1984 when the band’s original lead singer Layne Staley, who was then a drummer, auditioned and got the position as frontman for a glam-rock band called Sleze. After going through several line-up changes, it was decided amongst the members change the name of the band to Alice in Chains. Due to concerns of the name as a reference to BDSM, the band decided to tame it down a bit to Alice N’ Chains, mainly to please Staley’s mother. Yes, even rock stars fold under pressure from momma sometimes. Soon after, Staley met current guitarist, lyricist and singer Jerry Cantrell while working at Music Band Rehearsal Studios. They bonded instantly, Staley left Alice N’ Chains to join a funk band that needed a guitarist. Then roommate, Cantrell agreed to join the band Staley was in as a sideman (a musician who is hired to perform or record with a band, yet they are not officially part of it) under the condition that Staley join his band. The band’s larval stage didn’t come about until 1987, when Staley’s funk band fell apart and he began playing with Cantrell’s band full-time. They experimented with different names like Diamond Lies until the decided to take the original name Staley’s first band had fluffed up a bit: Alice in Chains. Upon the completion of their first demo The Treehouse Tapes in 1988, their tunes found their way to the ears of Soundgarden music managers Susan Silver and Kelly Curtis. The duo passed along the demo to Columbia Records and Alice in Chains was officially signed in 1989.

In between 1990 and 1996 the band was full-fledged and released four EP’s and one LP, the meat of their catalogue. The first was Facelift, featuring Alice in Chain’s most popular song to this day “Man in the Box,” a heaving, heavy titan of a track. The follow-up was Sap featuring the lamenting duet “Brother” with Heart’s Ann Wilson. The third was Dirt which went quadruple platinum and boasted “Rooster,” “Them Bones” and “Down in a Hole.” Lastly, was the self-titled album which featured “Heaven beside You” and “Got Me Wrong.” After the third EP and before the fourth came the LP Jar of Flies, this gloomy but gorgeous entry holds some of the band’s most poignant songs such as “Nutshell” and “Rotten Apple.” Post 1996, the band entered into hiatus due to Staley’s drug abuse. It was this abuse that eventually led to his death in 2002. While all mourned the terrible loss, the music faded into the background and the band drifted apart. They did not reunite until 2005, when they played in the benefit concert for the victims of the South Asian tsunami. This concert was when they first performed with now lead singer William Duvall. With Duvall at the helm, the band arose from the ashes to release Black Gives Way to Blue in 2008 and is poised to release the second album of their evolution this month entitled The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here which features the single “Hollow.” Don’t miss the chance to see and hear Mr. Duvall and the grunge gods of Alice in Chains at the Centre on May 22!

Willie

Nelson and the Family @ the

Centre

W

illie Nelson may have just turned 80, but he is as busy as ever. Over the last five years, he has released 10 (that’s right, 10) albums, a debut novel and career-spanning box set. But more than anything, Nelson loves to play live; the current tour is really just the continuation of a never-ending trek across the country that began decades ago. How many other musicians have burned out multiple tour buses? True to his famous lyric, Nelson just can’t wait to get on the road again… Nelson moved to Nashville early in his music career and tried his hand at writing, but his own demos were summarily rejected. Still, a number of Nelson’s songs became hits for other artists, including Roy Orbison (“Pretty Paper”) and Patsy Cline (“Crazy”). By 1961, Nelson had signed to a small label and was off and running. He scored several top ten singles under his own name and caught the attention of RCA Records, one of the most respected companies of the era. Unfortunately, though now supported by a bigger label, Nelson couldn’t repeat the top-ten success of his previous singles and eventually opted for a premature retirement – a strangely wise career move. After a year in the figurative wilderness, Nelson returned with renewed enthusiasm and signed to Atlantic Records. He produced a string of albums with a new backing band (dubbed the Family) that peaked with the hugely popular concept album, Red Headed Stranger. Still considered one of the greatest albums of any genre, it sold millions and made Nelson an immediate and lasting star. From this point forward, Nelson released nearly an album or more a year, racking up hit after hit. The list of classic, timeless singles includes “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” “On the Road Again,” “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” “Always on My Mind” and “Beer for My Horse,” a duet with Toby Keith.

Backed by his trusty collective of musicians known as the "Family," the seemingly ageless Red Headed Stranger is coming to the Centre on May 6th.

Nelson’s musical achievements have granted him the clout to take on other issues dear to his country heart. As one of the founders of Farm Aid, he has helped raise money and awareness for the plight of American farmers. The nearly three-decades-old event is still going strong, selling out each year with a cast of usual suspects, including Neil Young and John Mellencamp. Nelson has also lobbied against horse slaughter. He and his daughter Amy care for over 70 equines at their Texas facility and passionately advocate for the humane treatment of animals. And then there’s BioWillie, Nelson’s brand name of biodiesel fuel. Developed over the last decade in an effort to help end this country’s dependence on foreign oil, it has failed to reach a mass market but is still a step in the right direction. Nelson signed to Legacy Recordings in 2012. His first release for the new label, Heroes, featured a surprising collaboration with Snoop Dogg along with more traditional acts like Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson and Jamey Johnson. And even more brand new albums are on the way. —Thomas Ellis

Don’t miss country music legend Willie Nelson and the Family at the Centre on May 6th. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. The Centre is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

Broadway at The Centre

Presents:

U

An Interview with performer:

Universo Pereira

niverso Pereira is no stranger to the stage or to rock and roll. He was writing and singing for his own rock band when he was hired to tour with the five-time Tony-nominated musical Rock of Ages. Now he’s performing eight shows a week as Stacee Jaxx, a rocker with a huge ego and even bigger hair. From roaring renditions of classic hair-metal ballads to the “Don’t Stop Believin’” finale, Pereira tells News4U Rock of Ages is coming to Evansville, and it isn’t to be ignored.

News4U (N4U): How did you land a spot with the Rock of Ages tour? Universo Pereira (UP): It’s something I’ve always wanted to

do. Rock of Ages put out a call looking for a hot-mess, trainwreck, maniac jerk of a singer and I thought, ‘I could do that with little or no effort.’ So, I auditioned, and lucky for me, I got the role and couldn’t be happier.

PHOTO CREDIT: ROCK OF AGES BROADWAY

N4U: Would you consider yourself similar to your character Stacee Jaxx? UP: That’s a loaded question! Stacee is a lot to deal with. My

friends and family would probably say I’m exactly like him.

N4U: What is the best part about touring? UP: You know, I love meeting people. People are so excited

about the production. They’re genuine fans of the era. We go all over the United States and have been all over Canada. To be able to go to some of these cities and pick up the vibe and culture and to see some of the traditions these cities have has been amazing. It’s an amazing experience and I’m just trying to live it up.

N4U: What are some of the songs you perform in the musical? UP: Oh man, I get to do some of the best songs of the era. That

includes “Sister Christian,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “I Want to Know What Love Is,” “Come on Feel the Noise” and “Here I Go Again.” Some are alone, some are duets and some are with the entire ensemble.

N4U: Anything else you’d like to tell Evansville? UP: If you’re coming to this show, just be prepared. It’s two and half

hours of escapism. It’s entertainment to the bone. I’ve done over 200 shows and the jokes are still funny to me. I know the jokes are coming and it’s still funny. —Elisabeth Osborne

N4U: What can fans expect when the tour reaches Evansville? UP: Evansville can expect a full-on rock show. It’s half rock

concert, half musical. We’ve got a 5-piece rock band on stage the entire time, and these guys are ripping. The band has played with everyone from Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crüe to The Smashing Pumpkins, and even 30 Seconds to Mars. They’re just all over the map as far as experience. From the opening number you’re just blown back in your seat. Even if you’re a theatre fan, you’ve never seen anything like this. People can expect something that they’ve never seen before.

Interview with Styx Guitarist: James "JY" Young

T

he 2nd annual Midwest Rock-n-Roll Express is scheduled to make a thunderous stop at the Ford Center on May 15. This tour is a music lover’s dream, showcasing three of the biggest and most enduring acts: Styx, REO Speedwagon and the “Motor City Madman,” Ted Nugent. Rolling Stone called last year’s inaugural outing one of the “10 Hottest Summer Package Tours of 2012.” With such rave reviews, these musical friends couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do it all again and prove that they’ve still got it. Styx guitarist James Young was kind enough to speak with News4U before the tour. News4U (N4U): The tour starts in less than a week. How are you spending these final days? James Young (JY): We are actually in New York at the moment participating in Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. There was a sort of kick-off to the festival at the Hard Rock Café. Dan Aykroyd got up on the stage and played harmonica – it was a lot of fun. N4U: Your previous tour that featured the Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums actually started right here in Evansville. JY: That first show was really a test show to see if the two album approach would work before we took it to the big cities. The audience response blew me away. I was really worried that playing “Renegade” so early in the set would backfire. But as the band grew quieter at the end of the last song, “Aku-Aku,” the crowd got slowly but profoundly louder – it was like “hey, this does work!” Those two albums really represent the pinnacle of early Styx – they’re my two favorites. N4U: The disparate elements of Styx – the intriguing combination of rock, pop and a bit of Broadway – have always made the band stand out from other acts. JY: I would compare us to the Beatles in one small way: we had three different writers in the band with three very different personalities. We didn’t agree on a lot of things, but when we came together creatively it got everyone’s attention. I think we

all expected the band to implode at some point – but every time we got close to breaking up, something really great would happen, and we just kept on going. One thing that we’ve always had is the ability to put on a great live show that is never boring. N4U: So many of your songs have stood the test time – some for over 35 years – and are still being played on the radio, featured on television and in movies. Does the emotional response to Styx surprise you after all this time? JY: Music is this incredibly powerful force that comes from a higher place and is channeled through myself and my band mates. You do your best with your human talents to create something meaningful. But you can never know precisely how something will resonate with other people, what emotions it will spark. I’m constantly amazed, delighted and surprised to hear when people say they were moved to tears by our music. To be able to do this for a living is an incredible joy for me. —Thomas Ellis

Have you been waiting for a night of chair-bending, pile-driving action?

A

s fans of professional wrestling know, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is the world’s pre-eminent organization in its field. Since its founding as Capitol Wrestling in 1952, the WWE has been bringing top quality wrestling content to the legions of fans the sport has gained. Now, the WWE is bringing the action back to Evansville. After ending the separate RAW and Smackdown branding on live events, the WWE World Tour Supershow is an amalgamation of the former shows. Without a separation among fans, this event will play host to a variety of popular WWE talent, including John Cena, Sheamus and The Shield – the rogue wrestling organization that has appeared in many recent storylines. Current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Alberto del Rio will be at the event as well. The line-up for events like this are always up in the air, but “the longest-reigning WWE Champion of the modern era” CM Punk, is currently scheduled to be competing in the ring here in Evansville. It would be interesting to see him battle with Ryback, the up-and-coming wrestler whose catchphrase “Feed Me More!” proves he has an insatiable appetite for chaos, something Punk can certainly relate to with the myriad of wrestlers that he’s confronted during his champion reign. In an interview with Digital Spy,, Ryback informed everyone that he’s ready to face CM Punk and wants him to be healthy for the proposed match. Ryback is a very dedicated wrestler and very proud, saying he knows he will become a staple of the organization and will one day be the champion. A position he wagers he can hold for years after. For the huge fans of professional wrestling, Ryback ensures that there will soon be another boom period for the WWE,

one equal to the NOW days at the WCW, which has “incredible talent” in development and is becoming more competitive than ever. Whether you’re a fan of Ryback or not, he and the group of wrestlers that dub themselves “Team Hell No” will be at the event. This will undoubtedly cause tensions between them and the Shield, two organizations whose very existence are in dire contrast to one another. Team Hell No has partnered with Ryback many times to battle the Shield and their main purpose is to reclaim the championship title from CM Punk. These tensions have been a huge part of the most recent storyline for the WWE, so seeing it play out on stage is an opportunity that should not be missed. As a fan, this idea is gratifying but things may turn out differently. As per usual with wrestling, storylines and partnerships can change in a flash, all the more reason to consider seeing the Superstars at a live event. Regardless, tensions among wrestlers in the organization have been running high at recent events and the night is guaranteed to be fun. Don’t miss the chance to catch a dropkick or chokeslam in person, events that create lifelasting memories.

—Brad Phillips

The WWE World Tour Supershow will be hosted at Evansville’s Ford Center on Saturday, May 18. Ticket prices start at $15, but vary depending on seating choices. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • May 2013

Live at the Ford Center For anyone who grew up in the early days of MTV, it 's hard to forget the surrealistic image of Tom Petty dressed as the Mad Hatter in the video for "Don t Come Around Here No More. "

N

o one would have expected the meat and potatoes rocker to flourish in the decade of excess but that pretty much sums up Petty – always cool, regardless of trends. And nowhere is that more evident than the Billboard charts. With little fanfare or drama, Petty has scored hits in five different decades. Mercifully, you never see him in the tabloids or acting like an idiot in public – he just gets on with the job at hand: making great rock and roll music. Though Petty is currently recording a new album scheduled for release in 2014, he is taking time out to tour and will visit the Ford Center on May 16th. It’s a rare opportunity to see a musician who really is all about the music. Petty wasn’t always a solo artist. He played in several early bands, including Mudcrutch (which included two future members of his longtime backing band, the Heartbreakers). However, the fan base never extended much beyond Petty’s hometown of Gainesville, Fla., and he was left with little choice but to go it alone. In 1979, Petty’s third solo album, Damn the Torpedoes, took off like a rocket. It produced a trio of hit singles – “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Here Comes My Girl” and “Refugee” – that are still featured on rock radio nearly 35 years later. Typically, Petty took his new found stardom in stride. He was all business, cranking out two more top-ten albums, 1981’s Hard Promises and the following year’s Long After Dark. Then Petty took his career to another level all together.

After releasing 1985’s Southern Accents and 1987’s Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough), Petty formed the Traveling Wilburys in 1988 with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. The band was a “super group” in every way imaginable. While it’s since become the status quo for stars to come together for a side project, it was quite revolutionary at the time. Petty must have been energized and inspired by the collaboration, because he hit the jackpot with his next album, 1988’s Full Moon Fever. Platinum many times over, its numerous top-ten songs ruled the radio for the whole of that year while the highly creative videos ran day and night on MTV. Though Petty has never been able to match the commercial success of Full Moon Fever, his subsequent albums have received generous critical praise. Highlights include 2002’s The Last DJ (effectively an unpleasant open-letter to the music industry) and 2006’s Highway Companion. In 2010, he released Mojo, a bluesbased, gritty set of songs that sound even better in concert. That’s hardly surprising, considering Petty’s live pedigree. He and the Heartbreakers don’t simply reproduce the music; they play with the emotion, feel and intelligence so often missing from today’s artists. Come see them show everyone how it’s done at the Ford Center on May 16th. —Thomas Ellis

A Fairway Force:

David Mills He has faced the treacherous beauty that is Victoria National Golf Course in the 2012 United Leasing Championship, gone to the state finals flying the deep green of a North Husky and is now a fairway force for Indiana University.

H

e is David Mills, and since being introduced to the game of golf at a very young age by his parents he has never stopped challenging himself to reach further and achieve more. David recently took a break from his academic and golf schedules to take a couple chip shots on the 19th hole with News4U.

N4U (News4U): What is your favorite aspect of the game? DM (David Mills): My favorite aspect of golf would be seeing the work from practice translate to tournament play. I also really enjoy the competition when playing in a tournament. N4U: What is your favorite memory tied to the game? DM: I have a lot of fond memories traveling around the country playing in tournaments. If I had to pick one, I would say that playing with Gary Nicklaus in the U.S. Amateur, and meeting and talking to Jack Nicklaus was pretty special. N4U: In your opinion, what is the most challenging aspect of the game? DM: I think that the most challenging part of golf is the mental side of the game. It is easy to go out and play well when it doesn’t matter. It is a lot more difficult when you are under pressure to perform.

N4U: What is your favorite course to play in the Evansville area and why? DM: My favorite course to play when I am back in Evansville is Eagle Valley. The Brinker’s have been very kind to junior golf by giving juniors an opportunity to play and backing the Evansville Junior Golf Association. Several of my friends live around there, and its nice to play a casual round there with some buddies. N4U: What advice would you give to someone who is really serious about wanting to be skilled at the game of golf? DM: If someone wanted to take their game to the next level, I would recommend working on putting. Putting is the key to lower scores. N4U: What high school did you go to and were you able to use your skill in the game of golf to represent it? If so, how did it feel to be able to do so? DM: I went to Evansville North High School and played on the golf team for four years. It felt great being able to represent North

up at the state finals, and to be able to compete for a team championship is really special. N4U: What is David Mill’s future in the game of golf? DM: I still have another year up at IU for college golf, but I have not given it too much thought after graduation. The dream is still making it to the PGA Tour one day. N4U: What was your experience like in the 2012 United Leasing Championship at Victoria National? DM: It was a fantastic experience. It was great to play with professionals and to get a feel for what it takes to get to the next level. I look forward to trying to qualify for it this year.

The days of crossing the bridge into to Henderson, Ky. just to save a couple bucks are long gone.

A

new ‘era’ has begun, spawned by a recent bloom of businesses, a new focus on culture and a variety events new and old in the city across the river. This move towards a more unique and exciting Henderson includes food, art, music, bars, retail and more. But fret not, the city is keeping its bluegrass-banded soul intact, with events and businesses that are just plain, simple fun and embody down home, country goodness. In the culinary sense, Henderson has most every shade of the flavor spectrum covered. Lucy Bellas Pizzeria is a small, intimate eatery that serves pizza, sandwiches and pasta. These are fresh and savory eats at a good price. Then there is CKB or Commonwealth Kitchen & Bar. It takes the spirit of Kentucky’s country cooking, adds rare and unique ingredients, a pinch of creativity and a dash of big city refinement. A foodie’s delight. Also, Cancun Mexican Restaurant, the closest you can get to authentic Mexican cuisine in the tristate area and Golden Corral Henderson bringing cuisine from every region of the country together under one roof with a perfect family atmosphere. Looking for a great place to party with friends? Henderson has it. Darren’s Pub boasts an all around comfortable and very versatile environment. Also, don’t miss Dustin Diamond on the 15th at Henderson’s Comedy headquarters Double Duke’s Saloon. In the arts, Henderson brings one new and one brandspanking new Studio (opening this month) that includes the collective works of many different creative minds from several artistic fields. Studio 421 just played host to the Trashion Show in April and Studio 4905 will have its Open House on the 11th. On the music and retail front is Abba’s Music. It is a quaint shop downtown that offers repairs on stringed instruments and a selection of other new and used instruments from trusted brands. With an experienced, courteous and helpful staff, it is quite the destination for any musician. Of course, this is all just the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned to this page for more enticing detail into businesses and events lulling you across that bridge! —Oliver Mason

W

ith glowing beauty and a radiant personality to match it, Evansville native Chelsea Caswell is on the road to the Miss USA pageant. Crowned Miss Nevada in January, the 23-year-old career woman will compete for the crown this June against the rest of the United States competitors. If she wins it all, she’ll be the first Nevadan to win the title. News4U caught up with Chelsea on her visit back home to Evansville.

N4U (News4U): What first caught your interest in competing in a pageant? CC (Chelsea Caswell): I wasn’t one of

those pageant people growing up. I had never done a pageant. It was my first pageant and I just happened to get lucky my first go-round and win!

N4U: What do you do to prepare? CC: I did a lot (to prepare) because I’d never

done a pageant before. I had to prepare myself for going against these veterans. So, I had a pageant coach, and an interview coach who really changed my game. I learned it’s not about what you say, but more of the mentality behind it.

N4U: What is your response to people that believe these pageants are only about outer-beauty? CC: It’s a huge stigma that it’s just a beauty

competition. When it all comes down to it, the only way to separate one pretty girl from the next is by who they are as a person. It really is important that people recognize that beauty pageants are more than just beauty. These are very bright and intelligent young women. In the top 5, each of us are unique individuals and confident, empowered women. The pageant experience shaped me into a really well-rounded woman.

N4U: Since you were born in Evansville, is there a part of this city or the Midwest that’s impacted you along the way? CC: The way I was raised is what really

separated me from a lot of others. The smalltown mentality is so different. When you’re born in small town and raised in a small town, you just end up being a different person. I have really strong values and a great support system. I like the slow motion of coming back to Indiana. It’s really refreshing to be back with the family roots I feel here.

N4U: If you take it all and win the Miss USA crown, what sort of things will you be doing? CC: The winner goes all around the United

States and is an ambassador for Susan G. Komen. The Miss USA organization lets you be your own person and choose what you want to do, but help you do it in the best way possible. You know, Miss USA is more about a career woman and a leader and someone who can really impact the community. I think that I embody all of those qualities, not just because I’m Miss Nevada, but also because I have a career. I think that’s what separates me from the others.

—Elisabeth Osborne You can catch Chelsea and the other candidates this June on NBC.

JASON WATSON FOOD CRITIC Los Portales

3339 N. Green River Rd. Evansville, IN 812-475-0566 As always, when I walked into Los Portales, I was greeted with big smiles. It was a slow evening, so I sat at my normal booth in the bar. Chips and salsa? ”Yes please…and hit me with a cheese dip appetizer as well.” The cheese dip comes to the table warm and the salsa cold, as they should. I’m a big fan of fresh salsa and Los Portales fits the bill: full of fresh pureed tomatoes, a healthy amount of cilantro and a hint of roasted chili’s, which gives a nice smoky flavor. This cheese dip is classic: rich, velvety and smooth, with just a pinch of jalapeno to provide some heat. As entrees go, these guys kill it. I took part in the Burrito California and the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo (shimp with garlic). The burrito is served larger than life with a subtle yet spicy sauce. Stuffed with grilled chicken (or meat of your choice), sautéed bell peppers, onions and tomatoes give the wrapped delight a crisp, clean and fresh flavor. A classic red sauce flavored with cumin, smoked paprika and tomato is the ideal accompaniment to the dish. Now, for the shrimp, perfectly cooked and plump, they were. Seasoned with just the right amount of spices, garlic, lemon and something else I just couldn’t pick up. The portions of each dish are enough to feed at least two people. I always grab some fresh pico when I’m in, because Los Portales does it right. Fresh chopped tomatoes, onion and cilantro are the greatest addition to any Mexican-style dish. Now, while I’m not much of a dessert guy and even less a cheesecake guy, I had to try the cheesecake chimichanga. This was a great choice by the way-rich, creamy and fried-not really sure where you could go wrong!

Lorenzo s Bread and Bistro

972 S. Hebron Ave. Evansville, IN 812-475-9477

When arriving at Lorenzo’s you feel like you are walking into a French bistro set in San Diego. You are welcomed with the smell of fresh breads, sights of house made desserts and an open kitchen times two, so you can see the progress. Chef Wess joined me on my excursion into his culinary mind and took the time to explain and discuss every dish. First, we ventured to the sea for some seared Mahi-Mahi, atop a toasted veggie ravioli, garnished with pickled cabbage. The Mahi was seared to absolute perfection and just lightly seasoned, letting the fish speak for its self. The ravioli was a fun garnish/side that provided texture, contrasting flavors and eye-appeal to the dish. The pickled cabbage wasn’t only pretty, it was tasty, due to the combination of rice wine vinegar and the hint of cinnamon (well played sir). Next came the crab cake, and I mean CRAB CAKE! The Crab Cake BLT was amazing. A large cake of Dungeness crab was displayed atop a slightly-charred toast point and built high with fresh tomatoes, thick-cut, cherry-smoked bacon and arugula. Let me add, this was not a pile of bread crumbs and fillers, buddy, the cake was almost all crab! Finally the Lobster Ravioli and Mornay sauce. The rav’s were al dente and the sauce was silky and full of fresh cheeses to provide a rustic yet exciting entrée. We did sample just a couple of wines, the Talbott Pino Noir stood out the most. So incredibly fruit-forward and easy to drink but supplies won’t last long, so take this suggestion to heart. Speaking of limited quantities, and I probably shouldn’t even print this, but if you get in soon and ask Chef Wess for his green tea gelato. You may be lucky enough to try the freshest, honey-sweetened, light, and most refreshing dessert around. But you better hurry!

store-bought vegetables and don’t like them. But once they try the real thing, they love them.” Dietz is also excited about Seton Harvest’s upcoming garden party on June 22nd. “All the proceeds go to pay for the shares of food that we donate to homeless shelters and food banks,” she explains. “There will be both a silent and live auction, and among other things, you can bid on French Lick and Disney World packages. Tickets are available to the public.” As an extension of Seton Harvest’s efforts to educate the public, a cookbook is in the works that will feature organic food recipes. Examples can be found on the website – tasty, nutritional dishes like spring greens soufflé and carrots with garlic glaze.

n recent years, Evansville has gained an unwelcome reputation for being allergic to a proper diet. In reality, there are so many great organizations here that promote a healthy lifestyle but simply never receive attention. So, being given the opportunity to shed light on one of this city’s best kept secrets – a place that should make anyone proud to live here – is a real pleasure. In northern Vanderburgh County, spread across acres of land owned by the Daughters of Charity, is Seton Harvest. It’s an ecologically-sound, community-supported, agriculture project – a farm for the people, in other words. Since 2006, over 300,000 pounds of fresh, organic food have been produced and divided up amongst local shareholders from all social and economic backgrounds. 20% of the crops grown each year are given to charity – mainly to food pantries and to the homeless. Last year alone, Seton Harvest donated a whopping 14,187 pounds of food. Currently, the price for a full monthly share is $650 and a half share is $450. Each week, you get a supply of locallygrown, chemical-free vegetables (visit setonharvest.org for the full list – too many to mention). Couples and families make up the majority of shareholders, but everyone is welcome to participate in the program, even businesses and organizations. In just six years, Seton Harvest has grown from an initial 60 shareholders to over 130 in 2012. At the helm of this amazing operation is “Farmer Joe” Schalasky. A longtime soil conservation enthusiast and former landscaper, he never imagined he’d be running an organic farm. “I grew up in a family of 13, and we had acres of garden,” says Schalasky. “When I graduated high school, I swore I was never going to pick up a hoe or grow a garden again (laughs)!” But when the idea for Seton Harvest was first introduced at a community meeting back in 2005, Schalasky was the man with all the answers. Once support for the project was secured, he and two other farmers began working the land. “It took a while to get the feel of the ground and to build up the soil,” Schalasky explains. “I wasn’t sure if we could make it work, but we’ve increased our crop production every year.” New to the Seton Harvest team is Program and Community Outreach Manager, Julie Dietz. She truly enjoys reaching out and educating the public, especially kids. “I love to go out to schools and schedule field trips,” she says. “A lot of the local kids have no idea that carrots and potatoes grow underground! They’ve only ever eaten

What ' s ‘ Cookin T

Cancun Mexican Restaurant

341 S Green St Henderson, KY 42420 (270) 826-0067

o a casual observer, all of the Mexican-themed restaurants in the tri-state area can seem to blend together. They all have similar décor, eccentric thememusic and similar dishes, but if you dive below the surface of Cancun Mexican Restaurant in Henderson, you will find they truly stand out from the crowd, and that the important differences are all in the small details. “In the seasonings, the way we prepare [the food] and the way it tastes, it is the closest you can get to Mexico,” said Cancun General Manager, Sergio Lopez. The seasonings in question include Chile Huajillo, Chile Ancho, Comino and Clavo. A couple other spices that they also use are fresh oregano and bay leaves. According to Lopez, there is a very strong family element in the recipes as well; Mexican home-style that is “how his mom would make it.” Their Guacamole is an example of this. Lopez also stressed heavily that no matter what the cost; Cancun always works with the highest quality and freshest ingredients available. They do this while also giving their customers large portions, stretching their hard earned dollars. The atmosphere of Cancun is what you would normally expect from a Mexicanthemed restaurant, but I found it to be slightly more contemporary. It also boasted a very intimate, warm and comforting vibe more family dinner table than street festival, which was a welcome trait. The first dish in the precession brought to the table was the Fajitas. The balance of texture in this dish was incredible. Crunchy and zesty grilled tomatoes and peppers teamed with savory, mildly-spiced and tender beef and chicken made my mouth dance. If the brightness of the veggies and the smoky meat weren’t enough, I added Cancun’s famous white cheese dip and it was a flavor K.O.

Second out was the Fiesta Seafood. It was a massive dish that included moist and wonderfully tender Tilapia with a gorgeous, golden brown outside. Also, well-cooked and subtly flavored shrimp with smoky but fresh grilled green and yellow zucchini, bell peppers and mushrooms. The whole dish was set-off by Cancun’s special rice, seasoned and cooked together with corn, Lima and green beans and peas. The third dish was the Paella (pie-a-yuh). It was comfort food defined. It contained the special rice, green peppers, beef, chicken, tomatoes and shrimp. It was filling, savory goodness. I added the white cheese dip to this one and the flavor was supremely bold and satisfying, it added a sharpness to the slow and steady warmth of the dish. Lastly, came the Pollo Playa (poi-yo ply-uh), or the special rice, chicken and cheese sauce. This was a very simple but very tasty dish, ideal for kids. This is a savory one. I put this mixture in a fresh, hot tortilla and dipped it into a small container of Cancun’s Hot Sauce. Ladies and Gentlemen, this hot sauce is simply out of this world and is a must for any hot-head. It boasts one of the most complex flavor profiles I’ve ever experienced in any hot sauce. It looks as vibrant as it tastes and has a slow, rising heat that lulls the palate. For a unique and high-quality Mexican-themed culinary experience, and a welcoming, comforting atmosphere make Cancun the place to indulge your Mexican cousin. —Nick Durcholz

hef Matt Camp of R ‘z Café, located in Ft. Branch, specializes in modern cuisine and classic comfort food. Originally from Evansville, Camp’s educational background is in both culinary arts and music. He grew up in a house that was full of both food and music, and he is proud to say that he now makes a living doing both. R’z is a locally owned small business that Camp describes as having “nothing in common with any chains. [R’z] buy[s] their products locally and support[s] the community. Everything, even including the French fries, are scratch-made. We give no love to anything prefab. Every customer here is as important as the next, too. We welcome special requests from our guests. We rarely, if ever, say no.” Camp goes on to share, “this place has a very laid back, kitschy atmosphere. Always happy, always upbeat. The owner, Candice Yancey, has an eye for detail and wants everyone to be 100% satisfied. She definitely keeps the place humming and the employees entertained!” Camp left his last culinary job because he was in a place in his life where he wanted his skills to be valued and put to good use. He was also dying for creative freedom as well. After meeting with the owners of R’z a number of times, Camp felt confident that they were open

to trying new things, and Camp liked the idea of working for a family as opposed to a chain or a private club. He states that it has been, “a great match.” The new restaurant already has many repeat customers, and they are already growing loyalty. Camp states, “I am so happy to know I am a part of what is bringing them back again and again.” He also goes on to say that, “there is no better feeling than to create something from nothing and be proud of the end product. The process of seeing/ hearing something in your mind and conjuring it into being is truly amazing. When you get compliments on it...it’s even better!” Camp’s favorite menu item to eat is the fresh shrimp and grits. As per Camp: “The gravy is just killer. It’s true to its roots for the most part but has our own little stamp on it. I think I was born in the wrong part of the country because I love food with even a hint of southern/ Cajun spice and heat, so this dish makes me happy!” When asked what he enjoys to cook, though, the answer isn’t quite as simple. He states, “I’d be hard pressed to answer that with one absolute reply. In addition to our regular menu, we also create new specials every day for both lunch and dinner. We have rarely even done the same twice. There have been some that have been asked for again and again though, so we may just add them to the menu! I get to continually try new dishes so it’s hard to pick a favorite. I just love trying new things.” Camp does, however, recommend the barbecue. He’s proud of the recipe for what is: one of the restaurant’s best sellers. He describes the flavor as “so memorable [that] there have been many request[s] for the recipe or jars of it.” Additionally, for the dinner crowd, Camp recommends the Flat Iron Steak that comes with southern white cheddar grits. The restaurant has also added a special Sunday menu. It features Huevos Rancheros, homemade biscuits and gravy and their “soon to be famous” Fried chicken, also a homemade donuts plate with maple bourbon. —Nikki Davis

Better Business Bureau Integrity

Golf Classic

G

et your short game in order, because the 4th annual Better Business Bureau (BBB) Integrity Golf Classic will be held on Thursday, May 16 at the Quail Crossing Golf Club. The event raises money to benefit four major programs: Consumer Education, Outreach to Senior Citizens, Charity Review and the Student of Integrity Scholarship – all created to help the BBB expand its commitment to the community beyond traditional activities. Over its four year history, the event has become quite popular, attracting more participants and sponsors and featuring increasingly impressive prizes. 2012’s edition included four hole-in-one contests with a grand prize of $25,000 or a new Ford Fusion - not to mention a host of other great giveaways. 22 teams sold-out the event and over 65 local businesses were represented. Another sell-out is expected this year, so don’t wait to sign up. It’s a great opportunity to promote your business as a sponsor and network with other local professionals. Employees are encouraged to form teams and represent their company, but individual players are welcome, too.

—Thomas Ellis

If you would like to participate or have your company represented through sponsorship or prize donations, please contact Tim Dempsey at your local BBB for more details: 812-473-0202 ext. 113 or at tdempsey@ evansville.bbb.org. Registration for the BBB Integrity Golf Classic begins at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 12 noon.

Maifest 2013

@ Germania

Maennerchor

T

here are many reasons to celebrate spring. It is a time of rebirth, renewal and an overall sense of rejuvenation. In light of this jovial spirit, Germania Maennerchor will be hosting their Maifest on May the 18. The party will include food, dancing, live entertainment and keg-tapping. Traditionally, in Germany and around the world, Maifest is a celebration that includes a maypole (or maibaum) which is usually adorned with various items to showcase a town’s history and crafts, the maypole dance, traditional German food, fun and comradery. It is also a chance to showcase a town’s talent and usher in the new season while enjoying sprits and live entertainment. Evansville’s version will have something for everyone. They will begin serving food at 12 p.m. The menu will include all manner of German fare, such as fried German bologna, smoked pork chops, brats, sauerkraut, beans, potatoes and a local favorite: Kraut balls. After 5 p.m., participants must be 21 or over. There will only be admittance through the Fulton Avenue entrance and a $5 cover charge. The Rathskeller Band will play from 4- 8 p.m. followed by Troy Miller from 8-12 p.m. The upstairs will feature The Rhein Valley Brass Band from 4- 8 p.m., followed by Skelton’s Montourage from 8 p.m. until midnight. Grab your lederhosen or Donauschwaben attire and celebrate the season right! —Brooklyn Solis

all-up your sandbox buddies and meet us on the playground. It’s time for another Way Late Play Date at the Children’s Museum of Evansville (cMoe)! Having a great time at cMoe isn’t just for the 4 feet and under crowd –this fun night is just for grown-ups age 21 and over. The Way Late Play Date features comedian CJ Harlow, dancing in the street with DJ Elo on the outdoor “playground” with food, full bar service, karaoke and a photo booth indoors. All of this and you get play in all of cMoe’s exhibits! (Climb a 30 foot duck anyone?!) Dusty Fiester, a 2012 attendee, said, “Way Late was so much fun; I can’t tell you the last time I laughed like that!” Fiester attended as part of a large group and particularly enjoyed the playful atmosphere. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 1. Doors open at 7 p.m. and wraps up at midnight. A Diamond Dig and Live Auction will also take place with all proceeds benefitting cMoe. You can also make it a “Stay Late Play Date” with shuttle service to and from the event, overnight accommodations and breakfast all for $79 at the Evansville Holiday Inn Airport! For complete details visit www.cmoekids.org. —Abigail Adler

ot many local businesses can lay claim to winning an Evansville Courier & Press Reader’s Choice Award – to being the best of the best. Yet, Studio B Photography has won three of them over the last four years. From commercial work to weddings and everything in between, it’s the community’s clear-cut favorite. Owned and operated by camera wizard Daniel Knight, Studio B grew out of his life-long passion for photography that first caught fire back in high school. “I spent pretty much all of sophomore year through senior year taking pictures or working in the darkroom,” he says. “I was rarely seen without my camera.” As graduation loomed, Knight felt increasingly uncertain about his future. But he had no reservations about photography and with a little networking, landed a sales position at the original Schmitt Photo. Both the president and vice-president were duly impressed with the young Knight’s talent. “Once they figured out that I knew a lot about photography and was quick to learn, they let me work on my own,” he says. Over the next two decades, Knight continued to expand his technical knowledge of photography and flourish in hardware sales. His expertise did not go unnoticed. The owners of the new east-side Schmitt Photo offered him a management position – which then led to a coveted professional sales position. Often working on the road, Knight forged invaluable connections with some of the area’s future photography icons including Bob Straub and Don Hardesty. But little did he realize that he was preparing for something much bigger. After being reprimanded by his boss for doing some professional photography on the

side, Knight made a life-altering decision. “I went home that night and told my wife that I was quitting my job. It was so evident that I wanted to be a professional photographer,” he explains. Knight opened Studio B Photography in 1995, running the business out of his Posey County home for the first seven years. The novelty of the situation wore off almost as quickly as his clientele grew. “It was insane. We had virtually no place left to live. Every space in our home was being used for photo shoots,” Knight says, still cringing at the thought. So, in 2002, Knight built the studio of his dreams on the same property – a beautiful, highly-functional building that makes quite an impact. In fact, most every client that experiences Studio B sends a new customer Knight’s way. The pictures, as they say, are worth a thousand words. “We’re not the cheapest, but we’re one of the most consistently professional in quality – the product we put out is phenomenal,” he says. “We shoot an enormous amount of frames, do a serious amount of editing and make everything look great.” Studio B has adapted well to the changing marketplace in recent years. While many professional photographers took the digital plunge too soon without first mastering the format, Knight took his time, never sacrificing quality. The technology may have changed, but the challenge is still the same. “There’s an evolution of a photographer,” Knight explains. “Once you’ve mastered the craft, things like lighting, exposure, lenses, etc., the hardest part is yet to come - learning to work with people. Posing your subjects and knowing how to get them to relax takes experience. But I really love what I do. I consider myself a ‘people photographer.’” —Thomas Ellis Contact Studio B at 812-838-2707 or info@danielknightstudiob.com.

Coliseum, Hammerheads and the Jungle.” As Nupin’s local reputation grew, he reached out to national acts like Project Pat, Gorilla Zoe and Shawty-Lo when promoters brought them to the area. These backstage connections led to studio collaborations and a foothold in neighboring cities like Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville and St. Louis – and places as far away as Atlanta. Things really started to heat up for Nupin in 2010 and 2011. His local anthem, “I’m from Evansville,” literally put him on the map, and a new mix-tape, Michael Jordan, stirred up interest from Legal Means Entertainment’s Phillip Baker. “I’d been hearing about Nupin for a while,” he says. “One of my cousins is a member of his crew, the No Pity Gang. When they opened up for Yo Gotti, I saw the performance and liked the energy. About a year and a half later, I bumped into Nupin and we started talking. I became his manager and set up a six city tour for him last summer.” Baker has even bigger plans for Nupin’s upcoming release, John Dillinger. The promotional strategy includes a 13 city tour with interviews, performances, collaborations and an appearance at the BET Awards in Los Angeles. Never one to rest, Nupin has recorded yet another new album, Freddy vs. Jason, which references the “sick” rap of Brotha Lynch and Tech N9ne. Baker sees it as more than just another album. “The way the songs all fit together, it’s almost like a musical. I want to make a movie out of it. It will be a horror film more or less – but one that is built on top of a soundtrack rather than a soundtrack built on top of a film.” With a backlog of great material and a dedicated team in his corner (including new PR assistant, Charm Bizzal), Nupin looks set to graduate from the local scene. Baker strongly agrees. “I would compare him to a Nas or a Common – artists who are able to speak to all regions and cultures, both politically and intellectually. I can’t wait to take his music to an even bigger audience.” —Thomas Ellis

t some point during Chavar Snider’s childhood, his aunt began calling him “Nupin.” Why? We may never know, but the name stuck and a rapper was born. The newly-christened, young Snider started working on his lyrical flow and by age 13, he was writing rhymes. As his skills sharpened, Nupin became a formidable presence on the local hip-hop scene, documenting life on the streets of Evansville and beyond. By the time Nupin turned 18, he was recording on a regular basis. These early tracks formed the basis of a ‘death trilogy’ with a James Bond theme – Livin’ to Die, Die Another Day and Tomorrow Never Dies. With the recession still a few years away, it was a particularly fruitful period for Nupin. “Back when I first started, it was easy to sell CD’s,” he explains. “People in the neighborhood that knew me and respected what I was doing got behind me and supported me. But now the street market isn’t the same. People don’t have $5 to spend on a CD. It’s crazy.” As the music industry sagged, Nupin took to the stage. “That’s the only way I was making money,” he says. “By 2008, I could go most anywhere here and ask a club owner to have a mix-tape release party for me. We would make up some flyers and people would come out and pay to see me - at places like Oxygen, the

Weddings: A Special Advertising Section

Q

The Sweet Side How does your business ensure couples end up with a tasty and unique wedding cake? What are some of the popular trends in wedding cakes right now?

Piece of Cake Piece of Cake ensures that every couple’s cake is delicious is several ways. First, is

a complimentary wedding consultation where the bride and groom get to try cake samples before they choose their cake flavors. Each tier can be a different flavor, so we give the couple our four most popular flavors to sample. Another way we ensure a delicious wedding cake is to bake each cake to order, using exceptional ingredients. Then, there is our signature made from scratch buttercream frosting... All of our beautiful wedding cakes are iced in our secret recipe frosting. They look like fondant but many brides are surprised to find that the cake is actually decorated in buttercream. The trends that we are seeing this season are Ruffles, Rosettes, Chevrons and Ombre designs. We have had so much fun incorporating these elements into our clients’ wedding cakes.

Q

What are some of the ways you make your wedding cakes/cupcakes stand out visually and to the taste buds at the same time? How do you cater to the couples creative preferences and suggestions?

Pinch of Sugar Our goal is to provide a beautiful and moist wedding cake to our customers. We

always try to cater to their wishes. However, if they suggest something that is not structurally do able, then we will offer them an alternative suggestion. We have made some very unusual wedding and grooms cakes, one cake looked like a corset with a feather pin, another resembled the lace of their wedding dress, while another one was draped with pearls. We have also made “Oogie Boogie” from the Tim Burton film The Nightmare Before Christmas, a plate of sushi for grooms cakes, tackle boxes, football helmets and stadiums. If they imagine it, we will deliver it! We do a lot of fondant covered cakes, which gives a very smooth appearance and has a layer of buttercream underneath. Our cakes are very moist and our buttercream frosting recipe is not too sweet and very light. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • May 2013

Q

Why would you need to hire a wedding planner?

A & A Event Planning:

There are two main reasons: time and money. A wedding planner takes a great deal of the stress off of the couple and their families, but one of the biggest luxuries of a professional wedding planner is keeping you on budget and saving you a lot of time. We have done the research for you and work with many vendors, which enables us to determine who is right for you and who wouldn’t work out for your needs. With the new trend of many couples paying for most or all of the wedding themselves it’s very important to start your new family without debt. Time is something there is never enough of when you are trying to balance your regular life and plan something as time consuming as a wedding. We are always available to our clients not just during business hours so don’t lose any sleep over it. We are here to ease your mind.

Catering

Q

What does your business do to ensure that both the couple and their guests have a memorable and hassle-free culinary experience?

Smitty 's Italian Steakhouse:

Once they have planned their meal with our chef, they can just relax. Our staff, from the kitchen to the bartender, work together to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding the event. We meet and go over every detail from the food to the decorations before the party, and have detailed notes ready for the staff working the event.

Q

With the multitude of catering options out there, how does your business stand out?

Golden Corral: One of the many things that I think stands out to our catering

customers is our flexibility. We can go from one extreme to another. The order can be as simple as a pick-up order here in the store, to a drop-off delivery, to the set up of a simple buffet line that we set up and leave, or it could be an all-out type of event with china and linens, centerpieces, party favors, servers and plated meals served to your table. For us here at Golden Corral, there is not a “standard catering package,” our standard is giving the customer whatever they want and need to make their event special. Q

What are the most popular dishes you see at weddings? Are there meals that are better served plated than buffet style? What advice can you offer couples when making the decision to serve a plated vs. a buffet style meal?

Just Rennie s Catering: The most popular dishes that we see at weddings are chicken

and pork entrées because they please the majority of the guests. These entrees also fit within most couple’s budgets. We are currently seeing quite a few weddings that are serving beef tenderloin. The quality of the beef is very moist, tender and pleasing to a large crowd’s palette. When making a decision regarding whether your meal should be buffet style or plated, look at where the wedding reception will be located. If your venue has a large kitchen and your budget is more flexible, then a plated meal may be an option that is appealing to you. If your budget is smaller or you have a large crowd to feed, a buffet dinner may be more your style because you can feed the guests quickly and keep the food hot.

Q

What are some of the newest and most stylish tuxes and dresses you have available? What would you recommend to a bride and groom who are interested in more of a vintage style?

Ella Park Bridal: Ella Park Bridal spends a great deal of time researching the latest

trends in bridal fashion and incorporates those into the wedding gown styles sold in our salon. The recent trend in wedding gown fashion incorporates a lot of lace, creating a very romantic, classic look. Illusion necklines, one-shoulder straps and cap sleeves are popular. While ivory is still the predominant wedding gown color, girls are gravitating towards white, soft champagne, blush and even black. The first recent trend in tuxes is the use of black tuxedos with a modern fitted look in the coat, shirt and pants. The second trend, which compliments a vintage gown very well, is a tan or gray tux. For any couple looking for a more vintage, classic theme to their wedding, We recommends making a consultation appointment and let the experts at Ella Park Bridal help create your dream look. Parties & More!

Q

What makes your business an ideal location for a memorable bachelor or bachelorette party?

KC' s Time Out Lounge: KC’s is the spot for late night fun! If you are a bride-to-be, bring

out all the girls in your wedding party and dance on our massive hardwood dance floor to live music on any given weekend or a DJ every Thursday and Saturday while enjoying your favorite drink. If you are the groom-to-be and want to have a blast with your buds KC’s has pool tables, darts, Golden Tee Golf and more to bring out the spirit of competition, all of course while holding an ice cold beer in your hand. You could even sit outside and enjoy the wonderful weather on our new covered patio. It is a great setting for your engagement party or bridal shower. Don’t forget about our fantastic food either!

Q

Photos! Can the photo booth supplier provide props for the guests to wear? What are some of the funniest props you’ve seen in photos?

FunShots Photobooth: It’s always more fun when the photo booth includes props for the

guests to wear. It is the guest’s choice to dress up or not. However, props really help the people who don’t usually like to have their picture taken to relax and have a good time. At one recent event, a large group young men in their mid-twenties came in mumbling to themselves, “I’m not going in there” (referring to the booth). Then, after a few drinks an hour or so later, they emerged from the booth in pink fluffy crowns and boas, saying, “Come on guys, let’s go!” It’s very popular among a group of people to coordinate hats, boas and glasses. They make fabulous group photos. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • May 2013

Cutter's Brewing Co. Floyd’'s Folly

Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager

Summit Brewing Co. Sága IPA

Christy Moore • 5 There is not much folly to be found in Grandpa Floyd’s brew, rich and creamy full flavor. A lovely light Amber Hue to the pour. It truly fits the bill as a soothing beverage for hard working folk.

Christy Moore • 3 If I may be aloud to use a play on words, this beer is A-bit-a let down. Now don’t get me wrong I am a fan of this brewery. Purple haze is one of my all time favorite beers but to be honest they missed the mark on this one. It is ok but when you have accomplished amazing previously, then second place is just the first loser.

Christy Moore • 4 This is a beer that’s name sets the precedence and helps tell it’s story, like a mysterious travel that has arrived from distant lands carrying with it an aroma of intrigue. The hoppy pine grabs the tongue as it crawl from the glass to introduce intoxication to the curious.

Jabez Martinez • 2.5

This is another clear, amber beer with a strong hops aroma. Since it is an IPA, I was expecting that. It has an average to strong hops flavor with a grapefruit finish but nothing too special. It is tough reviewing IPA’s because they have so much hops flavor; they all taste the same to me.

Jabez Martinez • 4

This beer pours a darker brown color with medium carbonation. I like to see us reviewing a Hoosier beer, this one is from Bloomington. I liked the roasted malt flavor with caramel and toffee flavors. This beer was creamy, smooth and easy to drink.

Nick D • 4.5

This brew boasts a translucent brown with a reddish tint. The aroma is nutty with hints of coffee and it is very soothing to the nostrils, smooth and rich. The first pull seductively balanced, smoky malt and nuttiness framed by the coffee flavor. The bite of the alcohol makes itself known then fades pleasantly. The aftertaste is just as calming as the smell. However, the more you drink the heavier it get s, so I would say this beer is ideal for colder weather. It is a warming and extremely well-balanced brew.

76 | May

2013 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

This is a clear, amber beer with a slight wheat and strawberry aroma. I could taste a faint strawberry flavor with some light hops. I am not a fan of fruit-flavored beer but this one is on the other side of the spectrum. I would not have guessed that it was a strawberry beer if it had not been on the label. It did not have much flavor at all.

Nick D • 3

This flavored beer wears a clear, amber hue with a very subtle light green tint. The strawberries come through right away in the aroma of this one but the saccharine element in the scent almost overpowers the strawberry itself. The taste is nearly the exact opposite, it is subtle and the sweetness is toned down. Add the carbonation and it makes for a refreshing spring brew but I almost wish this one was a bit bolder. It is a decent offering in the rapidly-growing market of flavored beers.

Jabez Martinez • 3

Nick D • 4

The color of this brew is the golden hue of a lager but the scent of it instantly proves otherwise. It is not the most pungent hops aroma I have ever experienced but it is most certainly not subtle either. The flavor is sharp and fairly smooth for an IPA and the aftertaste fades nicely after each pull and is quite manageable, even enjoyable. It isn’t anything special but I would call it an accessible, no-frills IPA. This is one of the more refined IPAs I have tasted.

Anchor Brewing Humming Ale

Jabez Martinez • 2

This beer has a strong hops aroma. It is a slightly darker beer with an amber tint. I would consider this a lighter IPA, but it also had a real odd finish that I didn’t care for. The best way to describe it would be what I would guess diesel exhaust would taste like. I know that is odd but that is the only way I can think to describe it.

Nick D • 4 Christy Moore • 3 The flavor itself is a mildly tame, watered down and slightly hoppy concoction. It is mildly carbonated, distinctly verdant and hay-filled notes. It poured a very clear and clean yellow-gold color. The nose of this beer is distinct, to the point of being slightly off-putting. A few caramel and citrus hints on the finish that linger with you. The beer comes on as slightly bitter and astringent.

The hue of this one is that of a yellow diamond, clear and vibrant amber. The scent is a tangy and hoppy, but balanced. The taste is a bit different though, the hops are a bit more pronounced but they don’t linger long on the palate. The carbonation is high enough that it tames and smoothes out the flavor of the hops. Overall, it is crisp and refreshing with a subtle aftertaste. It is a solid beer from a very solid brewery and it is ideal for spring.

Random Beer Facts! •In 1116 BC, Chinese imperial edict stated that heaven required people to drink beer. •The music for “The Star Spangled Banner” was derived from a British drinking song called “Anacreon”. •According to The Code of Hammurabi of ancient Babylonia (c. 1750 B.C.) a merchant could be put to death for diluting beer. •In Medieval Europe, brewing and baking went together. Thus women were the first European brewers and were often called ale wives. •The first US lager was brewed in 1840 by John Wagner, who had a small brewery in the back of his house on St. John Street in Philadelphia. Wagner brought the first lager yeast to the United States from a brewery in Bavaria. •Beer wasn’t sold in bottles until 1850. Beer lovers would visit their local tavern with a special bucket, have it filled and then begin the merry journey home. Compiled from www.beerfestboots.com

May 1-8 /Amy Brier/ Roliqueries Excerpt from Amy Brier’s website: “Carved directly in stone, my work combines traditional carving techniques with contemporary art ideas such as public interaction and appropriation. While my main means of production is carving, I do not limit my efforts to a single “signature” medium. Instead, I move between various media such as glass, stone, paper, metal and sand. My art is unique on many levels. For example, in the Roliquery series, every image carved is either in the negative, which when printed becomes positive, or vice versa. The carved stone is a tool in the creation of an image, rather than being simply a singular art object; it impresses the fluid and fugitive sand with an image from the fixed and permanent stone.”

Excerpt from Andrew Cozzens website: “I aim to create a visual situation in which the time duration of the work becomes an experience rather than a measured interval. I utilize both natural and synthetic processes to give my work a lifespan beyond the instantaneous viewing. By virtue of one’s own sensual impulses, I encourage the viewer to experience the present, develop a past, consider the future, and realize their place within the continuum of the work.” Opening reception is on May 18th from 5-7 p.m.

Since being elected, Mayor Winnecke has made it a top priority to help this community shake the stigma of being lazy and out of shape.

H

is “Energize Evansville” initiative has inspired people across the city to get

healthy. Just take a look around and you’ll see physically active people everywhere, much more so than in recent years. Especially encouraging, several fitness-oriented events were staged and greeted with great enthusiasm throughout the city in 2012. One of the most successful was “Streets Alive,” co-sponsored by Healthier Evansville and the Evansville-area Trails Coalition. The first “open streets” festival in Indiana, it was patterned off of similar events across the country designed to promote the concept that streets are for people – not just for cars and trucks. Creating a safe environment for walkers and bikers is a primary goal; it’s all about getting the community moving again. On May 19th, Evansville will hold its 2nd annual “Streets Alive” festival. Local vendors will once again line a mile and a half-stretch of Fulton Avenue (between Maryland Street and Diamond Avenue) and lead people in dances, yoga, tai chi, balance exercises, roller skating, jump roping and so much more. Imagine a carfree, free-for-all of physical activity out on the street – runners, walkers, bikers and every other non-motorized form of transportation, including wheelchairs. In addition, the Bicycle Club of Evansville will have a pedal-powered smoothie machine, and there will be a variety of cooking demonstrations for making healthy food. Apart from the health benefits, “Streets Alive” promotes a sense of community. Last year, people of all ages came from all over the tri-state to join in the spontaneous fun, sharing in the joy of interacting outside. Businesses along the route also benefited from the heightened activity in the area. It was a true win-win situation for everyone involved, and this year’s event promises to build on that success. As an additional bonus, Radio Disney will be on location to conduct a variety of games and activities for kids, so parents are encouraged to bring the whole family. Prizes will be given away, including a new bicycle donated by Dan’s Comp. —Thomas Ellis The event is absolutely free and open to the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Iron Man 3 Marvel Studios After the oh-so popular Tony Stark and his personal life are reduced to rubble, Iron Man struggles to overcome The Mandarin, a Chinese-Englishman and fellow scientist who shares a penchant for the grandiose. With the aid of the “Extremis” subplot, straight from the comic books and the promise of seeing Pepper Potts don her own Iron Man armor, Iron Man 3 appears well-suited to deliver a great experience for fans. Stark and Iron Man are once again in the capable hands of Robert Downey Jr. The Mandarin will be done by Ben Kingsley, who had a similar, convincingly evil kingpin role as “The Rabbi” in Lucky Number Slevin. Gwyneth Paltrow returns as the righteous Pepper Potts and is now Iron Man’s girlfriend. Last but not least, Don Cheadle returns as Iron Man’s loyal best friend, the aptly named “Rhodey.” The sub-plot introduces the creation of Extremis, a super-soldier serum that “hacks” a person’s brain in order to rebuild the perfect person. I wonder what a megalomaniac named Mandarin who wants to rebuild society would possibly want with that? Fan-favorite co-writer and director Shane Black takes the helm for his first try at the Iron Man franchise, replacing Jon Favreau who directed the first two films. While an inexperienced director, Black is a proven action writer with titles under his belt like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. Does Black have what it takes to thrill us while Stark struggles to answer the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Star Trek Into Darkness Paramount Pictures Into darkness... It is the direction of terrorism and of retribution. After Starfleet experiences terrorist attacks from one of its own, Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise vows retribution and pursues the enemy, John Harrison, a one man weapon of mass destruction. Can Kirk and crew destroy their opponent before he destroys them, and if they do, will it be the right thing to do? The entire Enterprise crew is back on deck reprising their original roles, but sorry Trekkies, no Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime this time around. Benedict Cumberbatch, from the BBC television show Sherlock, looks convincing as John Harrison, or dare I say Khan, or maybe Gary Mitchell? Dr. Carol Marcus will be played by Alice Eve (Men in Black 3). Peter Weller, yes Robocop, plays her father, Starfleet Admiral Marcus. With J.J. Abrams at the helm, and one extremely good Star Trek movie under his belt already, I’m excited to see the potential of matching the size of the story with the size of the universe that Gene Roddenberry originally created. The question must be asked: can Abrams boldly go where no man has gone before and deliver a film than the first? Only time and space will tell!

Les Miserables Universal

Everyone who has seen the newest version of Les Miserables may try to deter you from watching it because of the constant singing, but in its defense, it is a musical. Yes, it seems like there is never a break in the singing. In fact, maybe five lines in the whole movie are actually spoken instead of being sung. However, I do not think that the singing takes away from the impact of the film and the storyline itself. The cast is a phenomenal set of actors featuring Hugh Jackman (X-Men) , Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind), Anne Hathaway (Princess Diaries), Helena Bonham Carter (Sweeny Todd), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) and the totally underestimated Amanda Seyfried (Mama Mia). Although only Hathaway and Seyfried are known for their ability to sing, I was impressed by Jackman and Crowe who do most of the singing. I have always personally enjoyed Les Miserables in many different forms, but I found this newest film to be strikingly full of emotional impact. The movie is filmed mostly in grayish, dark tones, which really sets you up for tears in the end. I enjoyed the singing and never once found myself asking if they were going to quit. I think this film was heart-wrenching, very well filmed and directed and of course, fantastically cast.

This is 40 Universal

Okay, so Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are funny, right? Not in this film. This is 40 is supposed to be a sequel to Knocked Up, showing us the lives of Pete and Debbie a few years afterwards. However, if you did not know that before watching the movie, I would not expect anyone to figure it out. The film follows Pete (Rudd) and Debbie (Mann) who struggle to deal with their growing children and their life that seems to be falling apart at every turn. It is a very realistic movie--as in, it felt more like I was watching a documentary than a scripted film, but it definitely was not funny in the way I expected it to be. There are moments where they are having the same fights all married couples have, and the next moment they are having the same make-up conversation all married couples have. Now, the moments where they go off the handle and eat some pot-brownies or cuss out a 13-year-old boy or get into a ridiculous fight with the mother of another student, are the few moments that made me laugh out loud. But mostly, I just found myself wishing that at the end of every scene the credits would role. The film seemed never-ending, and I had to play Solitaire to keep myself awake. I suggest that if your time actually means something to you, you will not waste it watching this film. I am a fan of Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd alike, but that does not mean I have to like every movie they make. —Kristina Smith Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • May 2013

cd reviews A Hero en Route Keep Moving Self-Released 4/5

Evansville’s very own A Hero en Route (AHER) recently set up camp in Nashville and recorded the aptly-titled Keep Moving. The band’s new album should play well in the music capital, a city that appreciates rock and roll from the heart with no frills or pretense. All of the appropriate influences are on display: John Mellencamp, Blues Traveler, Bryan Adams – even a hint of AC/DC. The vocals are a strangely appealing mix of Huey Lewis, Joe Cocker and Brian Johnson with some wild forays into falsetto. While the music rarely deviates from the script, the guitar solos are welcome adventures that keep the listener on edge. Speaking of Mellencamp, “No One’s Gotta Know” has the fellow Indiana native written all over it – both musically and lyrically. There’s an unmistakable earnestness at work; the childhood memories ring true. “Twins” could have been written by Angus Young with its heavy Gibson riff. Vocally, it sounds like Bob blew his voice out or drank several whiskeys before taking the mic. It all adds up to classic AHER. Yet, final track “Ghost on the Corner” saves the best for last. With a down tempo and intricate finger-picking, the song shows another side of the band worth exploring.

Adema

Topple The Giants Pavement Entertainment, Inc. 3/5

Topple The Giants represents Adema’s first new material in five years. During the hiatus, original guitarist Tim Fluckey took over lead vocals, but he has yet to find his own style, often mimicking Korn’s Jonathan Davis or Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows. The same goes for the music. Topple The Giants is the sound of a band with no sense of direction. Opening track “Resolution” would sound right at home on Life is Peachy. The bass is funky, the guitar work is spidery and Fluckey scats a bit before breaking into a full-throated chorus. Even more in debt to Korn, “Unstable” comes across like a “Falling Away From Me” re-write. It’s a good song, just not wholly original. “Lions” is simply an ill-advised attempt at a power ballad with lines like “Rely on your lions/she rides the lions.” Still, album highlight “Planets” proves there may be light at the end of the tunnel. It’s an old track re-recorded for the EP. For once, Fluckey sings in an unaffected voice, and it turns out his natural tone is quite pleasing. The guitar work is equally compelling with a spacey vibe that could show Adema the way forward by looking back.

Jimbo Mathus & the Tri-State Coalition

White Buffalo Fat Possum Records 4/5 Squirrel Nut Zippers co-founder Jimbo Mathus has certainly made his mark in the music business. Twice nominated for a Grammy, the free-wheeling southerner’s resume extends from punk to ragtime and most everywhere in between. His latest outing with the Tri-State Coalition acknowledges the country, blues and gospel roots of his childhood but still rocks at every opportunity. Recorded in Mississippi, White Buffalo is very much a product of its environment. The spirit of the Delta seeps into every track, most tellingly on “Hatchie Bottom,” an acoustic guitar and harmonica lament. Its storytelling mirrors that of Dylan and Springsteen with lyrics depicting hardship in the heartland. In contrast, the title track rages like a lost Cream and Hendrix collaboration as Mathus intones “He ain’t dead, he ain’t dead – but he layin’ mighty low” over a distorted blues riff. “Run Devil Run” creeps along, barely held together by a sinister, distant organ and hollow, random guitar notes. It best captures the dark side of the Delta. “Fake Hex” epitomizes the southern rock of the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd with boogie-woogie piano and a driving rhythm while the chorus of “Poor Lost Souls” sums it all up: “She’s just a lump of coal, but she could have been a diamond.” Amen.

Octaves

Which Way the Wind Blows Bridge Nine Records 3.5/5 Based on the band name, you’d be forgiven for imagining Baltimore’s Octaves to be some sort of a cappella group showcasing startling vocal ranges. You’d also be dead wrong. In keeping with the Bridge Nine sound, Octaves attempts to beat you senseless from beginning to end with the same two or three notes screamed over relentless guitars. Equal parts exhilarating and infuriating, Which Way the Wind Blows is not for the casual listener. Vocalist Phil Fosler has the unenviable task of competing with the merciless cacophony. But right from the opening track, “Prematurecongratulations,” it’s clear that he’s up to the challenge. Black humor abounds as he sarcastically addresses an adversary: “The way the words just creep up past my clavicle and tip-toe out of my mouth…” The irony is too great. However, without the creative guitar interplay of Andrew Russell and Wes Young, Octaves would be just another willfully loud band. Tracks like “It Figures,” “Golf Tips” and “For Goodness Sake” blur the lines between metal, alternative rock and post-punk with a dazzling array of jagged riffs and tempo shifts. But just when you’re wondering why this band even needs a vocalist, Fosler bellows “I fall asleep with my foot in my mouth!” and it all somehow makes sense. —Thomas Ellis

cd sidebar Gentleman & Scholars

Thick as Mud Self-Released

The sounds of Gentleman and Scholars’ fourth album bring a true uniqueness to the Evansville Indie Rock scene. It’s got everything a good rock and roll album needs: gritty vocals, distorted guitar and tracks that roar from start to finish. If you’re looking for that rock and roll growl, all nine tracks will keep you holding on with their unfaltering similarity to The Black Keys. Thick as Mud is just that: heavy, dirty and rock and roll to its core.

Brown Bird

Fits of Reason Supply & Demand Music

Fits of Reason presents a hodge-podge of genres that work seemingly well in the hands of Brown Bird. There’s a major south-western swing appeal, mixed with eastern European folk. Brown Bird makes the genres into one great album for the spring season. Fits of Reason will please a variety of tastes, and especially fans of Cake, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes and Fastball. Simple percussion and a variety of stringed instruments will have you tapping your foot and driving with the windows down.

Oleander

Something Beautiful Re-Ignite Records

Alternative rock fans have heavy lyrics and heavier riffs to look forward to on Oleander’s recently released “Something Beautiful”. Lead singer Tom Flowers says the band worked to make this album reflective of their current lifestyles. The lyrics and music are a perfect match for each other and all eleven tracks have a lot of post-grunge drive behind them. Fans of Three Doors Down and Fuel will like the chug of this album, while slower tracks like “Where do We Go From Here” leave room for more laid-back tastes.

Video Games

Bioshock Infinite

T

here are scarce few games out there that can take a novel quality storyline and solder it seamlessly to engaging, entertaining and pulse-pounding gameplay. 2K Games has achieved this two times before and now a third with their Bioshock series. The forerunners in the series take place in the anthropologically manipulated and corrupt underwater ‘utopia’ of Rapture. They achieved greatness with multiple endings (depending on the choices of the player), rich characters, vibrant, steam-punk inspired environments and gameplay that included everything from searching for resources and treasures, to moderate puzzle-solving to both break-neck and stealthy combat. Bioshock Infinite takes place in the clouds circa 1920 and rocks a whole new story with fresh characters. The player is Booker DeWitt, a rough-neck, no-nonsense type who is a veteran of the Battle of Wounded Knee. He takes a job to find, capture and return a girl named Elizabeth to his largely mysterious and unforgiving employers. When DeWitt first arrives at the portal to the city, called Columbia, the player enters a sort of cathedral dedicated to the game’s major antagonist. You traverse hallowed halls, some flooded and speckled with floating candles, adorned with clerical art and stained glass windows. This scene both looks and sounds exquisite, as the devout worshippers the player encounters in the temple sing praises that echo eerily off the massive surfaces of the shrine. In the way of combat, all weapons are designed with the time period in mind, so some of them are true to form but others boast beautiful, esoteric switches, sights and inlays. The weapons discharge with palpable gravity even without the vibration of the controller, giving the player a real satisfaction. Similarly to the last two games, the player can go in guns-blazing or set traps for a more calculated and sly approach. Aside from a couple very minor texture flukes I experienced and lack of a co-op (when there is a character congruent to 80% of Booker’s adventure), this game is essentially flawless. It is extremely well-written, painstakingly designed and action-packed. Oh, and by the way, did I mention you get to traverse the city on a rollercoaster-like rail system using a personal appendage (and weapon) called a sky-hook?

—Mr. Farthington
