As the stale breath of fall inundates the Ohio River Valley, the volume and scale of events this month will turn the thermostat in the opposite direction. October, whose root oct harkens back to the Roman Calendar as it was the eighth month, is an exciting time in the tri-state area. Resident puck-heads rejoice as the Evansville Icemen kick-off their new season, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, resident fans of orchestral tunes nod with calculated claps in celebration of the new Evansville Philharmonic season. Some get their kicks from the bashing of hockey helmets and others the smashing of clash cymbals, some enjoy both. The incongruence of the two seasons paints a vivid portrait of how diverse the interests and people of our area are, but also brings us together in appreciation of an unforeseen rush of energy. Of course, this month is always for the fright-freaks out there, and this October is no different. It is complete with a guide for Halloweenoriented events (including those appropriate for the little ones), a break-down of the bluesy, spook-fest of a musical The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County and an in-depth look into the new Psycho theme of the Olde Courthouse Catacombs and House of Lecter. Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra 2013-2014 Season: An Interview with
Maestro Alfred Savia By Thomas Ellis
T
he 2013-2014 season promises to be one of the most exciting in the long, rich history of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra (EPO). Not only does it mark Maestro Savia’s Silver Anniversary as Music Director and Conductor, but the variety and scope of the performance schedule is unparalleled. Highlights include Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, Cirque de la Symphonie and The Music of James Bond – all specially selected by Maestro Savia. The new season will also resurrect Gospel Night and welcome the triumphant return of opera to Evansville. In the midst
of preparing for opening night, Maestro Savia kindly granted News4U an interview.
News4U (N4U): Congratulations. 25 years is a long time to be at any job, especially in this economy. Have you considered any other careers over the years? Maestro Savia (MS): There are other things I would probably enjoy doing, but I’m not qualified to do them – like tennis. But after watching the US Open last night, I think that a career at this point is a little out of the question (laughs).
N4U: So, you’re stuck conducting one of the finest orchestras in America. MS: It’s what I love to do. They always say find something you really love to do and get paid for it. That’s certainly been the case for me. N4U: There’s been some mild controversy regarding the legitimacy of your Silver Anniversary. MS: A colleague pointed out that it’s not really my 25th anniversary – that I’m just beginning my 25th year. But, to me, I think it’s more appropriate to celebrate now than when I’ve concluded the season. We’re making a big deal out of it – capitalizing on it, really. Hopefully, I’ll make it through it since I have a three year contract starting this season (laughs). N4U: On a slightly more professional note, do you recall the program that won you the position as Musical Director and Conductor? MS: Absolutely. My audition was in April of 1989, and the program consisted of Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No. 3,” “Symphonic Metamorphosis” and Brahms’ “First Symphony.” By September, my family and I had moved here, and I was conducting opening night of the new EPO season. N4U: So, obviously you had the conducting skills, but there’s a lot more that goes into the job. MS: Without a doubt – there’s the marketing and serving as the face of the orchestra. I mean, I won the job, but with the short-term contracts, I’m essentially being reconsidered every few years. If I don’t handle that end of things to the satisfaction of the executive committee and board of directors, then I won’t be renewed. But I feel like I must have done a good job here, because very few conducting tenures last this long.

Smoke-Free Communities Communities: Fetter Properties Implements Smoke Free Policy

n June 1, 2013, Fetter Properties Management Inc. implemented a smoke-free policy that will promote the health and safety of its residents. The smoke-free policy covers all of their rental units. Monte Fetter, President, of Fetter Properties Management, Inc. says the company chose to put the smokefree policy into effect as a way to prevent second hand smoke exposure. “The health and well-being of our residents is our top priority. Smoke-free buildings are cleaner, healthier, safer and contribute to a better living environment,” he said. “We want our residents to enjoy their homes” Fetter Properties Management manages homes and apartments in Vanderburgh County, Evansville and Newburgh for many investors. “Our owners like the smoke-free policy, because it protects their investment, lowers the cleaning costs and often lowers insurance premiums. It was a good business decision for us,” said Fetter. Fetter is joining a nationwide trend of offering smokefree living. Property owners are starting to realize there are far too many risks associated with smoking in a multi-unit housing structure. Secondhand smoke can easily travel through shared air ducts or travel under doors, but possibly even more concerning is the increased fire risk. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, smoking is the number one cause of fire deaths in the United States. One in four people killed in fires caused by smoking were not the smoker. Of the fatal victims, 34% were children of the smoker and 25% were neighbors or friends of the smokers. Smoking in the presence of a home oxygen tank can be especially dangerous.
Smokefree Communities and the Healthy Communities Partnership (HCP) Tobacco Free Initiative encourage all multiunit housing complexes to adopt smoke-free, air lease language as part of the Tobacco Free Living campaign. Tobacco Free Living is an initiative to inform property management companies of the benefits of voluntarily making their properties smoke-free. “We are excited to see Fetter Properties take this positive step to improve the health of their residents,” said Martha Caine, Director of the Healthy Communities Partnership Tobacco Free Initiative. Caine hopes the Fetter Properties policy is the beginning of a trend in the Evansville area. “We expect to see more and more buildings go smoke-free as property managers become aware of the health and economic benefits of going smoke-free.” Caine shared that a number of resources are available for property managers at the Tobacco Free Living campaign website (www.smokefreecommunities.com), including lease language, timelines for implementation, compliance letters and policy reminders. Smokefree Communities is also currently compiling a list of smoke-free housing options, to be included in this housing guide. The Olde Courthouse Catacombs & The House of Lecter present:
the Bates Motel By Nick Durcholz
Barely over a decade ago, the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse inspired chills in the area when a very specific spot in the catacombs made members of the Indiana Ghost Trackers’ Association’s compass spin like a top. he spot at which the magnetic anomaly occurred (with no wires, electronic panels or metal in the vicinity) was excavated. About two feet down was unearthed an old, capped whiskey bottle containing newspaper clippings dated February 27, 1927 reporting a brutal murder in South Bend, Ind., a March sky map and two photos, one of a man and another of a woman. A nefarious mystery indeed… This find piqued my own interest because the items contained in the bottle found seemed to serve a specific purpose, and so I contacted a personal source of mine Lily Weams. I inquired if said contents and other circumstances of the discovery held any significance. She concluded, with conviction, that the depth of the bottle (in between 1118 inches), its contents and the bottle itself are all indicative of a pagan ritual. She then asked me to find out the phase of the moon on the exact date of the newspaper clippings. On February 27, 1927, the moon was in between its Last Quarter and New phases. It was waning. Weams added thwat within said ritual, if the moon is waning, the individual is meaning to transfer dark energy. She then speculated, again with conviction, that the individual who buried the bottle (performed the ritual) may very well could have been the perpetrator of the murder. In other words, he or she may have performed this ritual to cleanse themselves spiritually of the act of murder. Undoubtedly creepy, but the theory soon galvanized itself with a layer of reality. I spoke to the Owner & Operator of the Olde Courthouse Catacombs/ House of Lecter, Phil Wolter who was present when the discovery was made; he said he had run into a member of the IGTA recently. The member informed him, after some small talk, that the man who had unearthed the old whiskey bottle from the catacomb’s floor had committed suicide. By excavating the bottle, he released the negative energy held within it.

So with this unsettling theory in mind, on top of sightings of apparitions and other inexplicable happenings…What better place than this for (one of) the home(s) of this year’s new rendition of the Olde Courthouse Catacombs/ House of Lecter: The Bates Motel. For its 34th production, the Olde Courthouse Catacombs and the House of Lecter will be cloaked in black, white and red to the tune of Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho. As far as the quality of the production? Wolter’s experience speaks in screams, “As far as we know, I’ve been in business designing haunted attractions longer than anybody in the country, other than Disney.” “I know there’s been some haunted house out there that may have been open longer that I have for 34 consecutive years, but as far as a single designer for every single show, that would be me probably,” said Wolter. The Bates Motel is a carefully tailored, suspenseful experience using specific elements from the set of the movie, forced perspective and layering to really immerse patrons in the film. The entire production will be in black and white and patrons will also encounter a ‘rainstorm’ very similar to the one in the movie. “It will be our biggest, most ambitious production we have ever put on. I’m not in the scare business. I’m in the entertainment business,” exclaims Wolter. With such a bold statement, is there a better way to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve than with a visit to the Olde Courthouse Catacombs and the House of Lecter? They have ‘rooms with showers’ and upon your arrival will ‘treat you like Mother would.’

A New Season & A New Era for the

With a new Evansville Icemen hockey season beginning Oct. 19 comes many changes on and off the ice.
D
irector of Corporate Development for the Icemen, Brian Vaal said one of the changes that will be most noticeable is the new voice of the Icemen, 96.9 radio personality Derick Benigni. “You’re going to have a great announcer in him,” Vaal said. “He comes to us with a background already. He’s done a lot of local play-by-play broadcasting, and he was with us for two years in the All-American Hockey League days.” Benigni replaces Terry Ficorelli, who was with the IceMen for three years. Vaal said the organization was just looking for a new voice. “[Derick] is going to be less stats and more stories,” Vaal said. “He’s going to come up with the stuff fans want to hear and really try to talk about the relationship side of the hockey business. “ IceMen Live, an in-person radio show that’s hosted at Backstage Bar & Grill and Beef O’ Brady’s in Newburgh, is being revamped. The popular show used to be hosted by Ficorelli at Show Me’s East. Other changes are in the works to engage fans more than previously, Vaal said. “We’re going to have more opportunities for fans to get on the ice and be part of the season.” Changes will include more in-game entertainment. TicTac-Toe games, adult tricycle races, digital puck shuffle and more Jumbotron activities are just a part of the new activities coming this season, he said. One change that may have shocked fans was the firing of former head coach, Rich Kromm, who recently accepted a job coaching the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL. The IceMen then hired Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Jeff Pyle, who comes to the organization with much experience. He played for 13 years professionally, three years in college and has coached for 17 years, as well as worked on the sales side of hockey.

Last year’s trying season, where the IceMen’s record was a dismal 25-40-7, will be a hard one to come back from, but returning players are determined, Pyle said. “We’re coming off of a bad year,” Pyle said. “Now it’s either put up or shut up. I think we alleviated some of the negative elements, and we have a good group that’s ready to go in the right direction. Everyone is really hungry for success because of what they’ve been through.” “I want guys that are good people first,” he said. “We know they’re talented, and the things they can do on the ice, but to me, they’re here for a reason. Whether they’re mentally soft or their work ethic isn’t good, my job is to teach them to be professional. Another goal is to move players up to higher opportunities,” he said. “I don’t want guys to sit here all year long,” Pyle said. “I want them to have the opportunity to play in the American Hockey League.” The team has nine games scheduled with their traditional rivals the Ft. Wayne Komets and10 slated with their growing rivals the Cincinnati Cyclones, but Pyle said rival games are played just like any other game. “Every night we have to try to perform at the highest level possible,” he said. “As long as we’re working hard and being prepared, we’re doing our best.” The IceMen start training camp for the 2013-14 regular season on October 4, then have a date with fellow North Division counterpart the Kalamazoo Wings on Opening Night, October 19 at the Ford Center. “I just want it to start. It’s been a long summer,” Pyle said. “I’m excited about the mentality and character we have. I just want to get started, and you can’t do that until you hit the ice.”

he Bob & Tom Show has been a morning staple for years, making the daily commute to work infinitely more bearable with a mix of irreverent skits, songs and on-air appearances by talented comedians. The popularity of the radio broadcast prompted the hosts to literally take the show on the road in 2007 to further promote some of their favorite comics. Seven years and 300 dates later, the Bob & Tom Comedy Shows continue to get big laughs from coast to coast. This year’s line-up features veteran performers Drew Hastings, Donnie Baker and Tim Bedore. Hastings, the recently-
elected mayor of Hillsboro, Ohio, spoke with News4U ahead of the show at the Victory Theatre on October 5th.
News4U (N4U): Apart from your involvement with the Bob & Tom Comedy Show, what have you been up to lately? Drew Hastings (DH): I just did a benefit show last weekend in Cincinnati for about 400 people, and the sound system failed. I had to literally yell for one hour, but I’m old school – the show must go on! N4U: I recall from your 2008 Comedy Central showcase Irked and Miffed that you joked about employing a strategy of slow suicide through smoking. And yet, here you are five years later, still very much alive. What went wrong? DH: I managed to quit. I got in a fight with a guy half my age – a wiry construction worker in good shape. He took his shirt off and came at me, ready for business. I had a cigarette in my hand, and I flicked it away. I watched it float away in slow motion, and I said to myself ‘that was my last cigarette – I’m going to get my lung power back and kick this redneck’s butt!’ N4U: Since you last performed in Evansville, you’ve become the mayor of a small city in Ohio. What possessed you to get into politics? DH: Well, I was used to disappointing people on an individual basis, and I thought I’d try letting down a larger group for a change. N4U: What is more difficult, making people laugh or presiding over a small city of disgruntled citizens? DH: Oh, presiding over a small city is much harder without question. But I’m just trying to do my part and get one little piece of America turned around. I think this country’s going to hell-ina-hand-basket – actually, I don’t think we’d even make our own hand-basket anymore.
N4U: What’s your take on the likes of Anthony Weiner giving mayoral candidates a bad name? DH: Well, if you’re going to have a scandal, don’t let it be cheesy with cheap, predictable jokes. N4U: You have built your career on dysfunction. What would happen if you ever got into a successful, normal relationship? Would your comedy career be over? DH: No, no, no. You just start exploring other areas of dysfunction – or the dysfunction that arises from being in a normal relationship (laughs). N4U: In addition to being a comedian and a mayor, you’re also a farmer. How long can you maintain the delicate balance of three careers? DH: They all just crash into each other and somehow I just keep them all going. With a story written by novelist Stephen King and music by John Mellencamp, The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is an expressly unique musical experience.

et in Mississippi in 1967, the show details what happens when two brothers, along with a young girl, die under mysterious circumstances. Combining elements of the supernatural, horror, family drama and musicals; Ghost Brothers will appeal to a wide audience due to the versatile themes covered in the performance. When asked about the style of music that will accompany King’s plot Mellencamp remarked, “It’s an American story about an American family. Some of the characters are 100 years old, some are 15. So that will give me the opportunity to write for each character in a different style. I ain’t writing a bunch of rock songs.” This statement accurately portrays the goals King and Mellencamp had when creating this musical, which was to create a unique piece where the music fit each individual character.

News4U (N4U): The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County combines the work of author Stephen King and musician John Mellencamp. How do you think this contributes to the unique nature of the musical? Susan Booth (SB): It’s a total mash-up, and that’s what makes it wonderful. I think of it as a live radio, ghost story with music. And because the ghost story comes from a gothic master and the music comes from an American icon, it’s a pretty fantastic mash-up. N4U: What would you consider to be your greatest inspiration as a director? SB: I like doing things I have no idea how to do. There’s that notion that we only grow if we challenge ourselves to step fully outside our comfort zone on a frequent basis. So just like the mountaineer who looks for higher and harder peaks, I look for projects that will make enormous demands of my imagination and my skills.

N4U: What has been the most interesting experience you have had while directing Ghost Brothers? SB: When we were auditioning actors in New York, we’d sit in these tiny rehearsal studios, and the actors would come in one at a time to sing and read for us. These are total pros that do hundreds of these auditions a year. But they would walk in – and see, sitting behind a table, Steve King, T-Bone Burnett, John Mellencamp – and often Meg Ryan as well – and they’d sort of stop in their tracks.
N4U: What aspects of Ghost Brothers set it apart from other musicals? SB: The guys had no interest in writing an old school, traditional musical. They had a story they wanted to tell that was gothic and kind of cosmic – and John wrote these songs that deeply excavated these characters – and they threw it all in a pot. And it doesn’t look, sound or function like any other show I know. Which is what I like best about it; it’s so purely the fusion of these two guys.
N4U: Which show, that you have been involved with in the past, was the most fun to direct? SB: This one has given me the opportunity to eat French fries with Steve King and hang out backstage at FarmAid with John Mellencamp. That’s pretty hard to beat.

With the recent passing of country music legend George Jones, Merle Haggard now stands as the greatest living songwriter and performer of the genre.
H
is credentials include 40 number one hits as well as the development of the “Bakersfield Sound” with Buck Owens. But his influence reaches far beyond country music. Over the years, everyone from Bob Dylan to groups such as the Grateful Dead has paid homage to Haggard’s unflinchingly honest approach to his craft. “The Hag” is often name-checked in interviews as an example of a man longdedicated to presenting the purest musical vision. There’s no sugarcoating or polishing. Haggard has always said what’s on his mind whether you like it or not – and he’s sure to give Evansville an earful when he plays the Centre on October 29th. The 76-year-old grew up in California and quickly gained a reputation as a trouble-maker after the passing of his father in 1945. After numerous stints in jail, including the infamous San Quentin Prison, Haggard finally got his act together and got serious about playing the guitar (he also plays a mean fiddle). His outlaw persona seemed to strike a chord with audiences, and by the early 1960’s, he was recording for a local label. While Haggard had a real talent for writing, he particularly excelled at singing other peoples’ songs which became a trademark of his career. In fact, his first big hit in 1965 was a tune written by Liz Anderson called “(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers.” Once Haggard broke into the top ten, the flood gates opened. The hits came fast and furious for the guitar slinger with the Telecaster twang, including the beloved “Okie from Muskogee,” “Carolyn,” “The Fightin’ Side of Me” and “The Roots of My Raising.” Throughout the 70’s and into the early 80’s, Haggard maintained his position at the top of the country charts, releasing a

continuous stream of number one songs before the hits dried up. But the downturn in musical fortune gave him the opportunity to take stock and write a well-received autobiography, Sing Me Back Home. Haggard’s fearlessness was splashed across the pages, making for an often painful but ultimately rewarding read. The cautionary tales of hard living only added to his growing legend as a sort of modern day outlaw. Never one to back down from a challenge, Haggard refused to be silenced after CBS Records Nashville passed on releasing the patriotic song “Me and Crippled Soldiers Give a Damn” in 1989. The controversial track was written as a reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to allow flag burning under the First Amendment. Rather than take the rejection lying down, Haggard simply bought out his recording contract with CBS and found a label willing to put out the song. It was classic “Hag.” Coincidentally or not, Haggard did lie low for a period following the label war but resurfaced in 2000 with the stripped-down, criticallylauded If I Could Only Fly. Another excellent album, Chicago Wind, appeared in 2005. It contained the anti-Iraq war song “America First.” In 2010, Haggard released I Am What I AM, a title which perfectly distills the country legend’s manifesto down to five simple words.

With an 11 year career in professional basketball, Derek Anderson has lived a dream not many others get to experience.
H
is talent, hard work and motivation landed him a spot on seven different teams in the NBA and allowed him to play college ball for the University of Kentucky and Ohio State University. That same drive has now translated into a tell-all, motivational book called Stamina detailing Anderson’s childhood surrounded by loss, poverty and vice. It is a classic tale of rolling with the punches and achieving your goals when the odds are stacked against you.
Anderson took a moment out of his schedule to speak with News4U. News4U (N4U): Who or what inspired you to play the game of basketball? Derek Anderson (DA): My friend Maurice Morris gave me confidence but my Uncle George gave me all the knowledge and skills. N4U: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in making a career out of the game?
DA: To study other top players that your game is similar to or you want to be better than. Study means watch their games, not just their highlights. N4U: Can you describe your most powerful memory on the court? DA: When I dunked over Louisville four times in the 1st half. N4U: For you, what is the most interesting aspect of the game of basketball? DA: The way you fall in love with winning is like being in a relationship. And losing is the same way! You can be up and then down in an instant! N4U: You are a wizard at the ‘drive,’ utilizing one-handed dunks and reverse lay-ups, what made you so proficient at taking the ball to the hoop and getting the points (often times with a guy who was a foot taller than you guarding the basket)? DA: When I was in the 7th grade there was a guy who blocked my lay up in front of all my friends. After that, I made a decision to NEVER allow that to happen again. I said this... ‘If you’re in the way, between me and the goal, then I must make you move or go through you…End of story!”

The setting is small and locally-themed with a beautiful exterior patio. I had never tried the red beans and rice, so I thought, ‘let’s get frisky.’ Out comes a cup full of chunked ham and smoked sausage, cradled by green bells, tender beans and a simply wonderful brown sauce with just the right amount of heat. After came the Booger Bear Chicken Sandwich (R.J., the owner’s daughter’s nick-name). A toasty hoagie roll, buttered and parmesan-ed is piled with fresh grilled chicken, mozzarella and provolone cheeses, grilled mushrooms and buttermilk ranch. A little messy, but the flavor is finger lickin’, so I say, ‘well worth it.’ Then comes my pizza pie, oh my, my, my! Perfectly crisp, brick oven crust, rests below a tangy tomato sauce with melted mozzarella. The huge chunks of Italian sausage and fresh, diced tomato made the pie complete. I have had pizza all over the N.E. and S.E. coast, and in my opinion, this is hands down one of, if not the best!

But we’re here to talk food, so let’s do so. We began with some Irish Potato Skin Nachos. An abundance of house-cut skins make a base for cubed buffalo chicken, chipotle ranch, spicy Queso sauce, scallions and bacon crumbles. Follow it up with a Rueben, why not? Thinlysliced (almost shaved) corned beef sets the stage for sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing (thousand island), all packed in between two perfectly toasted pieces of a light, rye bread. Lastly, we went to the lighter side and had grilled chicken & wild rice. The rice was garnished with fresh sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes and green bells, all tender, yet not overdone. Laid atop was a thinly-sliced, grilled chicken breast seasoned in-house. I loved the nachos, but this was my favorite dish. Well done O’Brian’s!
COOKING SPOTLIGHT German Cuisine with
Gerst Bavarian Haus sauerkraut “goes with everything German.” Two sides that you can prepare with your German meal include potato pancakes and/or red cabbage. Reitz shares, “Potato pancakes are a mixture of potato, eggs, onion grilled into a pancake, and red cabbage is made with spices and apples, which gives it a sweet taste.” Potato pancakes can be served with applesauce and sour cream. An alternative is potato pancakes Spaetzle, which according to Reitz are a “German style noodle or dumpling topped with a wine/mushroom gravy that is often served with entrees.” To go with simpler sides, you might consider German potato salad. You could also add some Bavarian cheeses, some sausages and some hard or soft pretzels. Tangy mustards and/or pickles can be used to garnish or to help flavor your dishes. Finally, for desert, think about serving black forest cake, peach streusel or an apple strudel. Traditional German dessert recipes look to balance wholesomeness while at the same time delivering a delicious taste, but as a general rule of thumb forget counting calories and simply enjoy them!

elebration of the German roots of many of our city’s residents is a timehonored tradition in this area. Oktoberfest is a word that is used for many community celebrations that start in September and carry over into the month of October. The tradition’s roots stem from the original Bavarian event in Munich, Germany that has been celebrated since 1810. That festival originally took place in the days leading up to the first Sunday in October, and the celebration is an important part of the Bavarian culture. Gerst Bavarian Haus and Smitty’s owners Jim and Jerry Chandler have been to Oktoberfest in Germany, and while the restaurant has not held its own Oktoberfest celebration, it tries instead to bring a little of that feel to both of their restaurants year round. Each restaurant falls in line with the German heritage particularly on the west side of town, and Gerst Haus in particular has quite a bit of information to share on how to liven your culinary experience for your own celebration of this heritage. First and foremost for German celebrations, beer is a traditional staple. Cindy Reitz, Manager at Gerst Haus, recommends Spaten, Warsteiner, Paulaner and Schneider Weisse. She also shares that some of the “weisse” beers are served with a slice of lemon. Reitz adds that the beer is what can pull your meal together. In terms of food, one traditional German dish is Pig Knuckles, which Reitz recommends marinating in a salt/sugar brine for 7 days. For those not familiar with Pig Knuckles, they are the feet or the knuckles of a pig. They can be pickled, stewed or jellied. Another meal can be made out of Sauerbraten, which is a beef dish similar to an American Pot Roast. The trick that Reitz shares for this meal is to marinate it in a wine/sherry/ burgundy mix for 7-12 days. This mix is where the dish gets its “sour” taste from. If you are a beginner German cook, you might consider some simpler menu items such as Schinkenwurst Brote, which is a ham and bologna on bread, a bratwurst served with a curry sauce or a mini pork schnitzel, which is simply a pork loin chop that has been cooked with breading. Preparing your German dishes should not be rushed, though. According to Reitz, hurrying the marinating process can make the meat tough. She also shares that a good Rye or Pumpernickel Bread goes well with these meals and that

nter the only restaurant in the area that offers classic Mediterranean and traditional American cuisine within a multi-faceted and high quality dining experience. From a romantic, meaningful anniversary dinner for two to a casual, holiday business dinner for 100, the Acropolis has the setting, the mood and the food. Co-Owner Doros Hadjisavva illustrates in multiple ways, “We can customize our menu to anyone’s need.” And one would think that with the limitless culinary possibilities that Acropolis has to offer it would lose that grounded connection with its customers, but as it turns out, it’s quite the opposite. Hadjisavva reveals frequent customers come back simply because, “Acropolis is Doros & Ellada (his wife), and Doros & Ellada are Acropolis.” It is a sense of familiarity and comfort that is found in the restaurant’s leadership as well as its cuisine. Upon entering the restaurant, the décor reminded me of what I imagine a seaside Grecian villa to look like with a contemporary twist. There was soothing music playing and I was surrounded by warm colors with cool punctuating. Paintings and statuettes completed the vibe. The layout of the front of the house is very interesting. There are multiple corners, coves, sections and the upstairs, which houses the two large party rooms (one holding 110 people, the other about 70). I was led to a cozy cove nearby the bar with a wraparound seat and readied myself to be served. All four of my dishes were brought out at the same time. The first one I dove into was the Grilled French Chop with Mediterranean vegetables and roasted potatoes. The pork chop was perfectly cooked with a subtle but satisfying flavor. The roasted potatoes were savory and the veggies (carrots, green beans and cauliflower) brought some sweetness balancing each other out well, both with a luxurious, tender texture. With the bone exposed from the chop and the unique presentation it brought a refreshing, new take to a staple meal that took me to my own mother’s kitchen. The second dish was my favorite. The Gyro Tortellini, a dish so sinfully savory I felt like I was in
the seventh level of the inferno. It is a hefty dish, filling, but with the gyro meat, decadent sauce and cheese the flavor holds no punches. It is both slightly exotic in taste and familiar. The Gyro Tortellini is comfort food defined, that in my opinion, is one of the best pasta dishes I’ve had in the area. Third was the Spinach Artichoke Dip. It’s a warm dip that is a great balance of savory and tangy with earthy hints mixed in. The spinach is prevalent but not overwhelming. And again, there are familiar, comforting flavors accented by the new and different. Lastly, was an appetizer dish that is a spectrum of flavor. The Pikillia Kria or five cold dips. It boasts tzatziki, feta cheese, artichoke, tahini and Acropolis’ hummus with pita bread to dip. The hummus here keeps a lightness about it but the flavor is bolder and the texture more substantial than other eateries who serve it. It is my personal preference. To be more specific about what all this place has to offer, Acropolis boasts a full lunch menu supporting dine-in and $8 boxed lunches to go including a side, minidessert and drink. There is also a weekly, lunch special focused on burgers, gyros, baklava or hummus. Acropolis also caters, holds formal tastings and can host and feed large parties. C
hef John Johnson of Flames Grille originally heralds from Cincinnati. He landed in Evansville after a transfer though, and spends his days as the Executive Chef at Willow Park Retirement Community. He graduated from the Culinary Academy/Culinary Institute in Cincinnati, and he has cooked at several major country clubs in the Cincinnati area. The Culinary Academy was affiliated with the Culinary Institute of America based out of Hyde Park, New York. Johnson describes the experience as, “Instructors would come to teach certain classes for several months and then would return back to New York. Baking, Cost Control, Garde Manager, Patissier and so forth. This was a program offered to only a few students each year. It took me three years to get accepted… I was determined.”
To additionally describe his beginnings, Johnson shares, “I have cooked at a lot of different places, have seen a lot of faces and cooked so many ethnic foods. I have never been out of work and I have been in management for the past 15 years. The culinary field has truly been good to me. I opened a carry out only restaurant called First Taste Grille back home when I was fresh out of entrepreneur academy in 2003. I [then] got a job promotion to Evansville, so I closed the carry out up [and have] been in Evansville for the past three years. This is home now, [and] it’s more laid back than the big cities.” Johnson has cooked upscale cuisine for over 20 years, and he shares, “That’s my bread and butter. However, I also enjoy preparing comfort style foods. There is a need for southern-style entrees here in Evansville.” Johnson goes on to say that he enjoys the Evansville area because it’s not too far from home for him and because it is so centrally located close to other major cities. Johnson shares that his cooking style hasn’t changed since coming to Evansville, though. He says that at “Willow Park I can do my upscale presentations and feel good about my talent. I have managed to be the recipient of several awards and that’s a good feeling.” Flames Grille caters everything from boxed lunches to fine dining, and their pricing ranges from $6-$22/serving. When asked to describe some of his favorite dishes, Johnson shares that his Dark Daniel Sandwich is a hot roast beef sandwich that includes a thinly-sliced, top round served on dark rye. Johnson then laces the sandwich with hot mustard and Swiss cheese. His spare ribs are described as charcoal smoked for eight hours to give them a stronger smoke flavor. For his deep fried catfish, Johnson uses 7-9 oz. portions that are breaded and seasoned for “a little bite,” and his pork chops are described as follows: “dusted in seasoned flower and deep fried, golden brown.” Popular side items from Flames include oven-baked macaroni, fried okra, collard greens, peach cobbler, potato pancakes and cole slaw. Johnson shares that his roots in cooking stem from his mom. He says, “I learned southern-style cooking from my mother. Most of the time I would be on a punishment and bugging my mother to go outside and play. She would be in the kitchen cooking and she would put me to work prepping and cleaning. I would do anything to get back outside.”

Q: I know that this club tends to attract a lot of young people, who weren’t even born when these songs were big hits. More then any other decade, the 70’s and 80’s connect with people. Why? T: I think that they want to see the crazy outfits. I was so bland in the 80’s, I didn’t do anything but bad hair, big hoop earrings and a ton of shoes, so I didn’t get to experiment too much but I always come to Boogie Nights and I love the outfits! I love people wearing leg-warmers and crazy hair, and the guys all rocked out. I think that that’s why they come! It’s to see, “Really? This was the fashion?” and to be a part of it! The Boogie Nights Grand Opening Celebration is October 5 at 9 p.m. Boogie Nights is located at 701 NW Riverside Dr. in downtown Evansville.

Ato Essandoh of Django: Unchained, Hitch & BBC’s Copper By Nick Durcholz
A native of Schenectady, N.Y., 41-year-old Ato Essandoh’s acting resume is full of powerful cinema, television and theatre.
F
rom a maniacal warlord in Blood Diamond to an underprivileged, adopted college student in Garden State, Essandoh has shown a wealth of talent and to this day he’s still in a state of pleasant shock and major appreciation of his success.
Essandoh, who plays Dr. Matthew Freeman in BBC’s Copper, took a
moment out of his busy schedule to speak with News4U.
N4U: What was the most fun you had shooting a film? AE: I had a lot of fun doing Django. What was fun was executing the trick of being eaten by dogs… So, the way it works is that the dogs are taught to attack a kneepad. You take those kneepads and you put them on your arms, you put them over thick, leather padding and then you put your clothes over that. And so, the trainers were like, ‘Okay, you look good with the stunt, it’s working out. We need a safe word.’ And I said, ‘Okay, the safe word is pickle.’ Quentin called action and the dogs start to go. I’m getting torn apart by the dogs, screaming bloody murder and then, I see the dog on my right leg - because his head got twisted around he had to release. And I’m looking at this, so I start to yell, ‘PICKLE! PICKLE! PICKLE!’ But then, the dog reattaches and I started acting again and the whole scene went off. Then Quentin calls cut and the trainers run up to me, they’re like, ‘Did you call pickle?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but the dog reattached and then I thought the scene was okay so I just kept acting.’ And so, suddenly, all these seasoned stuntmen, look at me like I’m the man, they’re like, ‘Wow, you kept your cool.’ That one moment was like a small amount of pride for me. N4U: Of all your roles, which character was the most dynamic or the most satisfying for you to play and why? AE: I would say the first thing that popped into my mind, I did a few years ago at the Roundabout,

It hadn’t been seen in New York as a David Rabe production in – I don’t know – 25 years, and I played the character Carlyle who’s this complete psychopath and really lonely guy. I worked with Scott Ellis, who is now the Executive Producer on Weeds and he directs a whole bunch of TV. I’m working directly with David Rabe who’s just a legend and Scott Ellis and it was my first off-Broadway production. N4U: Do you have a preference for television or movies? AE: To me they’re both the same. The nice thing about television, or the nice thing about being a series regular like I am on Copper, is that suddenly I have to build a character over multiple, multiple episodes - in our case 13 episodes - and so, that’s a really fun challenge. That’s what I prefer now, because movies go too quickly. You don’t really get to live in the character like you do on TV. So, if – knock on wood – Copper runs for like five seasons, I will have that experience of what it’s like to really live and start to understand the character. N4U: How did it feel to be called ‘Commander Rambo?’ AE: (Laughs) That was awesome! Again, I’ve got to look at the luck that I’ve had, but suddenly I’m doing some theatre off, off, off-Broadway and then I’m in Mozambique doing a movie with Leo Dicaprio directed by Ed Zwick and my character’s name is Commander Rambo. I mean…it doesn’t get any better than that. I was like, ‘Do I have to show up? Commander Rambo… okay, that’s all, right?’ (Laughs) And that’s fun because when I saw Leo for Django, I was like, ‘Yeah, I got you the last time kind of, in Blood Diamond, but now, you own me.’ So, that’s Leo’s revenge on me.

ooking to shake your rump or de-stress your mind? Two fitness classes at Ivy Tech, which are available starting in October, could do just that. The Ivy Tech Wellness and Fitness center is holding two fitness classes starting Oct. 28: yoga and Zumba. “It’s definitely important to get your physical activity in,” said Ivy Tech Fitness and Wellness Coordinator, Amy Lutzel. “It’s recommended to get two to five days a week of cardio exercise. Zumba is for your cardio and yoga helps with stress and flexibility.” Zumba is described as an aerobic fitness program that features movements inspired by styles of Latin American dance and performed to Latin American dance music. Zumba classes will take place on Monday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for eight weeks. Those interested can sign up for one night for $59 or sign up for both nights for $99 a semester. Yoga takes place on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for the same price of $59. All classes are open to the public, Lutzel said. She added those who aren’t interested in taking the classes can still pay $49 a semester to use the school’s fitness center. “That’s for people who may live on the north side, it’s a convenient location for them, or for students and employees who have family or friends who want to use our fitness center,” Lutzel said. — Jessie Hellman To register call 812-429-0582.

The Signature Chefs Auction presented by St, Mary’s is one of the ways March of Dimes raises funds locally. For the past 16 years, the best chefs in southwest Indiana come together and each prepares a signature dish for you to tour while socializing and networking with others, and browsing and bidding during the silent auction. This event is located in lovely Downtown Evansville at the Scottish Rite on November 7th at 5:30 p.m. This event usually has over 400 people in attendance, and their yearly goal – which is often met, and exceeded – is $60,000. Though this is a large number, the March of Dimes Community Director, Ashley Murray hopes that it is not an issue to meet. As for the future of this event, Ashley says, “We hope to be in a bigger location and also, to raise awareness of the March of Dimes locally.” I have not been to this event personally, but I am a lover of food. So this aspect alone would probably inspire me to go. Plus, the knowledge that it is going to help young lives in need of medical assistance is just ultimately inspiring to me. orell McIntosh, known as J Swade, recently became the first Evansville native to make it into 106.1 KISS FM’s ‘Kiss it or Diss it’ Hall of Fame. J Swade’s hit “How You Feel” has helped the young hip-hop artist gain notoriety and is what granted him entrance to KISS’ hall of fame. 23-year-old, J Swade is fairly new to the music scene but is quickly gaining popularity. Swade uses his work, which addresses topics such as “life in the hood and love to the ladies,” to relay the tougher and more challenging aspects of life to his listeners. Due to his age, J Swade can easily relate to the struggles faced by the country’s youth as well as understanding the conflicts and viewpoints of adult listeners. J Swade’s musical career began in high school where he used to “freestyle and pound out beats on lunch tables.” Since he began his musical expression at such a young age, J Swade’s music has evolved quite a bit since its beginnings. Yet the lyrical themes concerning the struggles of growing up and the pursuit of romantic relationships have remained present throughout many of his songs. However, he can now approach these topics from an adult perspective, which allows his work to branch out in a way that is relatable to adult listeners as well as teens. This versatility allows J Swade to appeal to a wider and more versatile audience, not only crossing age lines but gender and socio-economic ones as well.

In addition to creating his own material, J Swade is also an accomplished producer of rap and hip-hop. By pursuing the production as well as the creation of music, J Swade has helped to expand the hip-hop industry by advancing the works of other up-and-coming artists as well as his own material. In doing this, J Swade has been able to reach listeners not only through his songs, but also through his support of other artists, especially those who share similar perspectives and values to the ones J Swade himself holds. Not currently signed to a label, J Swade produces his own material which makes his accomplishments, most notably, his recent success with his hit “How You Feel” even more remarkable. Also, J Swade’s “sex appeal and professional persona” aid him in publicizing his work and increasing its popularity among listeners. By striving to embody the popularity and power projected by his music, J Swade creates a strong, professional presence which amplifies his credibility in the eyes of his perspective audience. Additionally, by placing a focus on appearance and his attractiveness to others, J Swade comes off as honest in regard to his priorities thus becoming more relatable to his listeners. Despite the fact that his content is most relatable to the nation’s youth, J Swade emits a mature business presence, favoring his adult sensibilities over the teenage mentalities expressed in much of his work. This helps set him apart in the eyes of business affiliates and those he interacts with to craft, publicize and promote his music. Additionally, J Swade stated that, “At the end of the day, it’s all about the fans.” It is apparent that J Swade puts a great deal of effort into staying true to this statement due to the way in which he tries to reach out to and communicate with his audience. n the history of pretentious band names, Nathan Bayne’s short-lived, post-high school duo with friend Chris Hughes is up there with the most ridiculous: Transcend. “It was meant to signify us rising above or something,” Bayne attempts to explain through fits of laughter, “which is funny because we were 18 and had no clue what we were doing.” Against all odds, Bayne recovered from that embarrassing musical misstep. He was even accepted into the Air Force and proudly served our country for six years, traveling to places as disparate as Antarctica and Afghanistan. So, all kidding aside, he deserves our thanks and appreciation – if not our approval for his choice of band name. 10 years after the demise of Transcend, Bayne is now a solo performer, appearing regularly at local eateries and, more recently, wineries like Owen Valley. The 28year-old musician describes his sound as “jazz jam – an amalgamation of all the different genres and artists that
I’ve listened to over the years, from Dave Matthews to Billie Holiday.” His love for music stretches back to childhood. “I grew up in a musical family,” Bayne says. “My grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher on the north side of Evansville, and my grandmother played piano. So, every Sunday morning, we were in church watching grandma pound the keys and grandpa sing along.” Outside of church, he was particularly influenced by Bosse High School Band Director, Kevin Hulsey. “It’s amazing what he does with kids – to get 100 teenagers working together is a pretty incredible feat. He made me truly passionate about music and taught me a great work ethic,” he says, about the former EVSC High School Teacher of the Year. Bayne lived in Seattle for six years while serving in the Air Force but moved back to Evansville with his wife and daughter upon becoming a civilian again. Soon after, he used his GI Bill to study guitar with Renato Butturi at the University of Evansville. Last year, Bayne began taking music management courses. He hopes to continue his studies this spring with the ultimate goal of working in a recording studio or, ideally, acting as a tour coordinator for a successful band. “I want to be the guy who handles all the logistics - use my Air Force training to make sure that every single detail gets taken care of so all the band has to do is concentrate on playing a great show,” Bayne explains. For the time being, Bayne is concentrating on his music. His primarily instrumental solo performances are a product of the looping technology that he has worked with for the last 12 years. Like local favorite Lindsey Williams, Bayne uses a master pedal board to accompany himself, slowly building his sound from the bottom up. First, he creates the rhythm with hand drums, triangles, tambourines, etc. and loops it. Over the top of this repeating beat, he then lays down acoustic guitar loops and effects. Slowly, a full band comes to life with Bayne in control of the dynamics. ”I like being the background noise to people’s evenings,” he says. “I don’t necessarily have to be the center of attention – though I do enjoy catching people off guard. Sometimes I’ll do covers of Jeff Buckley or Reba McEntire just to mix it up. A Blonde is Born By Nick Durcholz
On September 12, Evansville brewing history was made when Carson’s Brewery birthed its first official offspring: a sweet but sassy honey blonde named Harlot.
S
tarted by Jason Carson in 2012, the brewery has been utilizing a miniature system to brew its beer for tastings and competitions a keg at a time. But on a beautiful though steamy day in September they got to use their facility as it was meant to be used. It’s massive, gleaming tanks as incubators for new life in Evansville brewing, kicking out a batch 20 kegs strong. That day, the excitement of the Carson’s staff was palpable. Preparations for the ‘birth’ began early in the day with the milling of the grain and its adherence to the correct temperature. The real action began when the grain was fed into the Mash Tun where the grains soaked in water forming mash. A gradual increase of temperature (over a 40 minute span) brought out carbohydrates which were then converted to sugars creating wort and is strained through the bottom of the mash tun. After additional water was sprayed onto the top of the mash to extract as much of the sugar as possible (called sparging), the wort was pumped into another giant receptacle called the Boil Kettle. In the boil kettle the wort was brought to a boil and small amounts of hops were added periodically. This process depends on the type of beer. The Harlot Honey Blonde is not very hoppy, so minimal hops were added.
This is where the magic happens. The chemical reactions begin and the ‘soul’ of the beer is formed (its flavor, color and aroma). It also halts the natural enzymes and sterilizes the wort. After the boil, the hopped wort settled to clarify. Lighter and lighter until the blonde got her namesake color. The hopped wort cooled as it settled and was sent to the Fermentation Tank. Here the yeast was
added and the sugar in the hopped wort began to turn to alcohol…Here the blonde lies until her sultry self is ready to keg (and bottle eventually). Then, she is shipped to one of many locations to keep the drinker company at their favorite bar or for them to enjoy at home later. There is nothing quite like having a ‘gorgeous’ honey blonde on your arm at a bar or taking one home for the night. The blonde’s siblings include the Eville American Wheat, Pagan Pale Ale, Brown Cow Brown Ale, RIPA and Red Dawn Amber Wheat. And these are just the immediate family…Head Brewer and mad scientist of suds, John Mills will concoct seasonal offerings as well. Carson’s tasting room is opening soon and the beer will be served there as well as at local bars, including but not limited to, Roca Bar North, KC’s Timeout Lounge, Bokeh Lounge, Hammerheads and Gerst Haus. Daniel Knight •2.5 This seasonal ale “pours up pretty” with a thick, white head and predictable hazy, copper color. The aroma is less impressive with only a subtle pumpkin scent and a little bready-ness. The taste is typical wheat ale, a little spice, pumpkin and malt. It’s weak on the finish– okay, drinkable, but not very exciting. That said, with its lightness and subtle flavor, I’m confident that some folks will enjoy this brew.
Daniel Knight • 4 This Oktoberfest inspired beer pours a deep amber color with a white head that stays on the glass for the longest time. Fruity and floral notes on the nose give the beer a pleasant scent. Malty sweetness is balanced out by the very light bitterness of hops. Try this crisp and clean seasonal beer while it’s still available, preferably with a bratwurst or two on a cool autumn afternoon.
Daniel Knight • 4 This beer fills the glass with a chestnut red color and a noticeable white head that vanishes in an instant. The fruity aroma of hops is present on the nose. The hop scent is very nicely balanced by the taste of a generous helping of malt on the tongue. The carbonation keeps this lager light, crisp and refreshing. This smooth and drinkable beer would complement spicy food very nicely.
Paul Bragin • 4 This deep red beer that is a cross between a red ale and an India pale ale produces a thick, tan head that hangs on for some time before evaporating. The nose gives off a very strong hop scent with citrus and pine notes. The hop flavor continues while sipping the beer. This beer is not for the faint of heart, but aficionados of hoppy beers should definitely seek out this one.
Paul Bragin • 4 The rich, dark brown beer has a thin, creamy head that quickly evaporates. The enjoyable scent of roasted malt immediately hits the nose. Some hop bitterness balances out the malt sweetness in the beer. The bottle says the beer is brewed with hemp. The addition of hemp did not seem to add much to the beer, but this is still a phenomenal beverage. This beer could become a favorite as the colder months approach.
Paul Bragin • 4 This seasonal offering has the color of roasted pumpkin and the thinnest head possible. Spices fill the nose. The first taste is traditional wheat beer with pumpkin and spice notes coming later. The pumpkin and spice tastes continue as the beer is sipped. This beer is a great one to have during the fall. You could serve it along with the mandatory slice of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, but there’s no need to wait to put the pair together. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 I like the original Shock Top but this was just average. It is a hazy, orange-colored beer. I could smell the nutmeg and spices that go along with similar pumpkin beers but this one was a little light on the flavor. I could definitely taste pumpkin and spices but they were a little weak. If you never had a pumpkin beer and would like to try one I would start with this one. It is also fairly inexpensive.

I did like the crispness that this beer had. I usually like the Widmer Brothers offerings and this was one pretty good.

Jabez Martinez • 3 This beer looked like a cloudy wheat with a slight orange tint. It did not have the strong flavors that the usual Oktoberfest offerings have so I didn’t rate it higher. It had most of the standard flavors but I hoped it would be more powerful.

Daniel Knight • 4 A classic Oktoberfest beer, that pours a bright amber almost orange color. Crystal clear with a head that quickly dissipates. The aroma exudes sweetness with lots of sweet malts coming through, some caramel, slight toffee, bready and grain like aromas. I find the taste slightly sweet, with a nice robustness and a delicious spicy finish. Overall, this is a very drinkable beer and perfect for a fall evening. Bartender, I’ll have another.

An excellent balance of sweet malt and bitter hops give the beer an enticing aroma. Some very enjoyable notes of roasted malt more commonly associated with porters and stouts are present in the taste with hop notes coming through at the end. The only thing that would improve this beer would be a generous helping of traditional German food. Jabez Martinez• 3 By the looks of the bottle I had high hopes. I was hoping for all these rich flavors but I was disappointed. It seemed like I might be drinking an Oktoberfest but it sort of tasted like a plain lager. I was very disappointed. It did have some sweetness to it but a complexity of flavors was nearly nonexistent.

If you have a strong and very complex bourbon, a mild cigar will be over whelmed. So a lightbodied cigar (Macanudo Prince Philip) might do well with a lighter libation such as a white wine, a light red wine or a blended whiskey such as Crown Royal or even a scotch like Chivas. Bottom line is that for those who like to experiment, this is a good way to relieve the tension of the day, to think noble thoughts and dream of the future. It is also a lot of fun to have these pairings with close friends!

Vesna Jovanovic was born in Chicago but lived in Igalo (Yugoslavia) throughout most of her childhood. During the Yugoslav wars, she returned to Chicago and enrolled in a public high school where she learned English and acclimated to the new culture. She pursued a BA in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Ceramics and later a BS in Chemistry at Loyola University Chicago. While attending The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she was awarded a Merit Scholarship and received a BFA in Studio Art. She also received an MFA in Photography from Ohio State University. It’s been nearly 50 years since the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and changed the course of rock and roll.
Nesw4U (N4U): Do you have a vivid memory of the Beatles’ historic performance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964? Mark Benson (MB): They played at the beginning and end of the show, but I had to be in bed by 8 p.m., so I missed the second performance. It was killing me, because I could still hear it from my bedroom (laughs). But at the time, no one was really cognizant of just what an impact the group was going to have. N4U: Do you think that the democracy of the Beatles was a key to their lasting impact? MB: Definitely. They could all sing and they could all play – there was no leader. The fact that even the drummer in the band had
a number one hit (“Yellow Submarine”) is astounding. No matter the creative endeavor, when you can get a group of people pulling in the same direction, all bringing their best to the project, it’s magic. N4U: What excites you the most about performing the early Beatles material? MB: Quite simply, you get a chance to play some of the best music of all time – and to hear lots and lots of people tell you what the Beatles meant to them in their lives. You come away with the sense that there is something bigger going on here. There’s such a yearning for this music, for the sound and the sentiment.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
T
he statistics are sobering: breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among women in the United States and the second deadliest. Roughly one in eight women will experience invasive breast cancer at some point during their lives. Thankfully, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is there every step of the way, counseling and comforting these women. In fact, one out of every two newly diagnosed breast cancer patients reaches out to the ACS for help and support. The organization’s efforts have greatly improved the chances of survival – there are currently more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. On October 19th at Eastland Mall, the tri-state will have a great opportunity to honor breast cancer patients and survivors by participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The event is designed to raise both awareness and money to help the ACS fight this disease. Over the years, these walks have raised more than $528 million for research, services and access to mammograms for women who need them. Last year alone, supporters helped raise more than $68 million nationwide. Registration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and the three to five mile noncompetitive walk begins at 9 a.m. Apart from participating in the walk, you can also get involved by fundraising, volunteering or acting as a sponsor.

Since the dawn of time, there has been an unwritten rule that makes it completely okay, if not encouraged for women to dress like a harlot for Halloween. or those of you who may not know what that is …let’s just say the majority of women’s Halloween costumes fall under this category: Sexy bunny, Naughty Angel, you know the less creative (or less clothing) the better. It’s becoming more and more acceptable to get your Halloween costumes at adult stores than actual costume shops. Now, there is nothing wrong with being sexy. I’ll be the first to throw on some sexy stilettos and a pencil skirt. BUT, that is not all we as women have to offer, nor should it be expected of us on a MANmade holiday. So, I propose a rebellion of sorts. How about we mix it up this year and have a Harlot-less Halloween! I am allowing us as women to be ugly and funny. Not just sexy or freezing to death and uncomfortable from lack of clothing at the end of October. There are tons of awesome women in power to emulate such as Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama. The coolest I’ve seen, make-up wise, has been the Pop

Warner Bros After satellite debris nearly destroys their space shuttle, a medical engineer and an astronaut struggle to survive as they drift together out into open space. George Clooney plays the astronaut, Matt Kowalsky. Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, the medical engineer. Ed Harris is the voice at Mission Control. The film has a 90 minute duration, so I am not sure how they will keep us entertained within this limited sandbox, but I doubt Clooney and Bullock would have signed up if it wasn’t something special. Alfonso Cuarón directs and co-wrote the screenplay with his son, Jonas. Alfonso has been nominated for three Oscars and is probably best known for Children of Men (2006) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). The film has a budget of $80,000,000, so I’m hoping we don’t just see a bunch of close-ups of space helmets. Again, I cannot begin to imagine how I could sit through an hour and a half of two people floating in space.

The Counselor
20th Century Fox After someone hijacks a multi-million dollar drug shipment, a drug-trafficking lawyer and his wife struggle to survive the ensuing slaughter by the relentless drug lords who want their shipment back. Michael Fassbender plays The Counselor, a lawyer who needs money now, a lot of money, and uses drug trafficking as his high-risk, high-reward vehicle. He plans to do a one-time deal, one big score and then get out unscathed. Ridley Scott (Thelma & Louise, Alien) directs a very capable cast including Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. He is dedicating the movie to his younger brother, Tony Scott, who passed away while the movie was being filmed. The film was written by Cormac McCarthy, the author of the novel No Country For Old Men. They have four Oscars to overcome there with an all-toofamiliar setup and no help from the Cohen Brothers. Hopefully, they do not try to do it with violence alone.

Star Trek Into Darkness
Paramount The story takes us into the darkness of space and the heart. It tastefully entertains, examines a violent circle of revenge and the difficulty of doing what is needed, versus what is moral. All of this, of course, is all very neatly wrapped with intergalactic spectacle courtesy of action-packed director, J.J. Abrams. Picking up where we left off from the 2009 movie, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) Captains the USS Enterprise and Spock (Zachary Quinto) returns as his First Officer. The film keeps Kirk in a state of almost constant peril, which makes for a tense viewing. All of the important crew members are able to have their moment in the sun. Overall, the movie is fast and fun but does lack a meaningful experience - except to further the spectacle of the franchise - which in this case is not all that bad.
The Bling Ring
A24 Based on true events, a group of teens uses the internet to track celebrity whereabouts and breaks into their homes while they’re away. The film focuses mainly on Marc (Israel Broussard), a somewhat sympathetic, lost boy who is self-conscious about the way he looks compared to others. We don’t actually see this; rather he tells us this during an interview after being caught (lame). The acting was well-done, but something very important is missing here – the story – and why it needs to be told on the silver screen. This is YouTube material at best. It could have (albeit little) merit as a documentary, but all-in-all it is one drug-induced party after another, one break-in after another, and the entire time no one seems to be in any real danger. The Idgits
The Idgits are Chris Chrockrem on drums, Cory Folz on bass and Jon Snyder on guitar. The three of us began playing together in a top 40 female led country band called Amy’s Shadow. When that band broke up, the three of us decided to get together every week and write some music. We had no intention of gigging or recording, we just loved hanging out and playing whatever we liked. After a fist fight in the parking lot of The Guitar Lab, we agreed on The Idgits. It’s a Yosemite Sam term that we took as slang for “idiots” which is fitting for us. WHAT THEY COVER/ DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE:
We tell people we are a honky tonk band and they assume we are a country band. We could not be further away from that. The only rule we have is that we like what we play. How can a band that covers Waylon Jennings also cover Sublime or The Black Keys? It’s all in how it’s covered. We do have and play originals. Some are the songs that go all the way back to the late 90’s and others are new. THEIR INFLUENCES:

Behold A Pale Horse Red Distribution 4/5 In 1997, Meredith Brooks released “Bitch,” a musical call to arms for women tired of playing nice all the time. The key line of the internationally popular song – “I’m your hell/I’m your dream/ I’m nothing in between” – certainly applies to rising star Anna Rose. From song to song, her personality confidently and effortlessly changes, embracing both the light and dark sides. It’s no coincidence that she is routinely compared to both Tori Amos and Janis Joplin – two singers from opposing musical camps. The diminutive singer can whisper seductively or belt out powerhouse lines in equal measure. Nowhere is this dichotomy more evident on Behold a Pale Horse than “Beautiful World” and “Electric Child” which appear back to back on the album. The former track is a melodic pop song with flowing, sugary vocals while the latter is a grimy, distorted blues with a stomping rhythm and a snarling delivery from Rose. Both performances are totally convincing.
Chrono Stellaris
Seasons Self-Released 4/5 It’s safe to say that you’re not going to come across another local band quite like Chrono Stellaris. After numerous line-up changes, the band has stabilized and gotten to grips with a strange mix of influences that range from The Sundays to 1960’s psychedelia. The band often stretches songs to the seven and eight minute mark with long, intricate instrumental passages that continually surprise. But nothing is more surprising than the assured, mature vocals of Ashley Frary. Her voice is a revelation – part Grace Slick, part R&B. More than anything, it’s her sense of melody that bewitches; she has a gift for choosing notes that are wholly unexpected but entirely complementary. Seasons is book-ended by two excellent, similarlythemed instrumentals awash in swirling bells and chimes, but it’s the middle of the album that truly dazzles. Tracks like “Autumn,” “A Way Out” and “Jack” perfectly marry the band’s pop and psychedelic intentions. The latter two songs feature inventive arrangements that go through a series of musical moods – reflective, pensive and joyful to name but a few. Frary, meanwhile, instinctively places her vocals in just the right spots, never intruding or attempting to steal the show despite being the main attraction. But even when she disappears, the music holds up beautifully.

George Glass
Welcome Home 3/5 Fans of light, breezy pop music may find a new favorite band in George Glass. The Los Angeles-based group brings a mixture of Barenaked Ladies, Weezer and Ben Folds to the table complete with a sunny disposition and goofy sense of humor. Whether the songs on Welcome Home are fun or just plain annoying is up for debate, but they are catchy, regardless. “AM Radio” is a musically buoyant number saddled with a grating, singsong chorus seemingly stuck on repeat. The lyrics offer a bit more bite, detailing a singer’s declining popularity: “Who’d have figured you’d be at it so long/ more than over the diminishing draw/downtown in the thick of the slog/barely noticing the talk that you walk.” “Future Former” is a far more adventurous track that captures the band at its best. While the music is typically simple and melodic, the clever shifts in rhythm come out of leftfield, adding a new dimension to what is effectively a Rivers Cuomo outtake. Even better, the vocals act more as an accompaniment rather than a distraction. Unfortunately, for every “Future Former,” there is a “Side Effects May Include” – a sleepy, forgettable track anchored by two major chords that jangle aimlessly. The boredom is palpable.
Tantric
37 Channels Pavement Entertainment, Inc. 2.5/5 Tantric is back after a four year absence with 37 Channels, named so for the ADD mind of band leader/ songwriter, Hugo Ferreira. Reportedly, he wrote 116 songs for the album but as is often the case, quantity does not equal quality. The general sound of past hits like “Breakdown” and “Down and Out” is in evidence, but there is an overall dated feel to the material not to mention a few embarrassing missteps. Why Ferreira chose “Again” out of over 100 songs to lead off the new album is a head-scratcher. With its tired riff, vodka-and-cigarettes vocals and half-hearted attempt at a melodic chorus, the track is a lost cause. “Blue Room” is a little too similar to Metallica’s “Until It Sleeps,” but at least there’s a (familiar) hook to keep you interested. Much better is “Rise” which showcases Ferreira’s proficiency on acoustic guitar. This time, the melodic chorus hits the mark, primed for radio play. But just when things are getting good, “Fault” crashes the party. An ill-advised piano ballad that lands somewhere between Lonestar’s “Amazed” and Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home,” the song is totally out of place on a Tantric album. At least Ferreira had the good sense to save the best for last. “Girl in White” is both haunting and heavy with troubling lyrics about abuse and disease. —Thomas Ellis

The album is the perfect mix of classical and modern sound, combining fast-paced heavy metal musical aspects with the creativity and fluidity of jazz.
Lots of Love From the Start
Jessica Fleischer, performing under the moniker ‘Lots of Love,’ combines high-pitched vocals and whimsical lyrics in her album From the Start to create a feminine singer-songwriter style. Fleischer’s sound is reminiscent of work by artists such as Sara Bareilles and Colbie Caillat. In addition, themes such as broken-hearts, true love and contradicting emotions make this release compatible with a mostly female audience, especially those in their teens. The common nature of the topics addressed in From the Start is offset by Fleischer’s unique vocals and quirky piano accompaniment. Overall, the airy and carefree qualities of the album make it a simple and cheerful listening experience.

Tides Are Rising Squeaky Chair Music
In regard to Joe Moorhead’s most recent release Tides Are Rising, Jeff Snipe of the Jimmy Herring Band remarked: “Honest and believable, passionate and engaging…goose bumps don’t come easy. There is a lot of love in these tracks.” This statement does an excellent job at describing Joe Moorhead’s sound. The laid-back, island feel that this album makes it the perfect soundtrack for summer. Tides Are Rising will appeal to a wide variety of listeners crossing age and gender lines because each new track is catchy, relaxing and unique.
