Combating the Big Chill >> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, While most of you (who still hold onto your sanity) counted down the minutes until the polar vortex receded to the arctic from whence it came and bid good riddance to its monstrous sub-zero swirl, I found myself in a state of awe and appreciation. On a food run in Warrick County the night it descended, I got a candid glimpse at its impossible combination of alarming force and subtle beauty. In strong ambient light the snow sped past horizontally like smudged or blurred time, and with lack of light the snow barreled at the vehicle like stars past a space vessel that was going into hyper-drive. As a result of the natural spectacle, a magnificent mixed drink of emotion formed within me: two parts calm, one part anxiety and one part excitement with a splash of nostalgia. Because of the gravity this moment, I saw the polar vortex as a rare, special event such as Haley’s Comet and I was sad to see it go. Like a farewell to good friend you only see every 20 years, and it was bittersweet… Coming back down to earth, there are two ideal weapons inside this very issue to help you combat the extraordinary winter of 2014. The 11th annual Really Big Show is coming up Feb. 8th, with all proceeds going to Evansville ARC.
T
he Really Big Show is an annual variety show fundraiser for Evansville ARC, a not-for-profit organization that provides services to children and adults with disabilities. Denise Seibert, Director of Development for Evansville ARC, said the Really Big Show has become critical to the organization. “The show has been critical to helping the community become more familiar with Evansville ARC and our mission of serving children and adults with disabilities,” Seibert said. “(It helps) Evansville ARC have the necessary funds we need to maintain our many programs.” She said since the show started in 2003, it’s raised more than $1 million for Evansville ARC. “Our services range from opportunities for employment, transition services for students from high school to adult life, volunteer opportunities in the community and the development of life skills, in addition to an inclusive child care center for children with and without disabilities,” she said. This year, the show includes a wide variety of acts, including Angelus, a group of six women from Mt. Vernon Senior High School Fine Arts Academy
that perform sacred music from various historical periods, to the band Deja Blu 5, as well as North High School’s Choir. She said the show will also be equipped with a few surprises - as well as - a performance by Evansville ARC’s Child Life Center Really Little Dancers. “Guests should attend the show because it’s truly fun-filled, entertaining evening for the entire family that supports the critical work of Evansville ARC,” Seibert said. “There is something that family members of all ages can enjoy.” The Curtain Call Reception features food, drinks, music and a silent auction, as well as a chance to mingle with the cast and crew after the show. This year, Jeff Lyons, chief meteorologist with 14 News, will be hosting and writing the show along with Marc Scott and Mark Elliot from 104.1 FM WIKY. “Those three men, especially when you get them together, are hilarious and really keep the show fun and entertaining,” Seibert said. Lyons, who has been involved with the show for many years, said it makes him proud to see what the agency does to help people with disabilities.
“In many ways, the show is just a part of me,” he said. “The thing I like best about the show is that each year is completely different. Different themes, different acts…basically; it is a true variety show.” As host, he is the head script writer. “I like the thrill of ad-libbing and getting laughs in front of a live audience, and the show is certainly a great outlet for that,” Lyons said. “We only do one rehearsal on the day of the show, so I have to have my part down cold and be ready to adapt as unexpected things often happen. If I do my job right, it just looks like I am up there having fun without a care in the world. Of course, it takes a lot of preparation to pull that off.” The Really Big Show is ARC’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and also provides a good outlet for local talent, he said. “People should come to the show to help support ARC,” Lyons said. “But, even more importantly, they should come to have a good time and support our many acts and community leaders who perform on stage.”
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the Old National Events Plaza box office or through Ticketmaster. Tax Tips for Filing your 2013 Return The IRS will begin accepting e-filed returns on January 31st. Make sure you are using the correct filing status; your filing status is determined by your marital status on December 31st of the tax year. Your filing status determines the amount of your standard deduction. There are 5 filing statuses; 1) Single for those who are not married even if you have children and may qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit 2) Married Filing Joint even if only one spouse has income. 3) Married Filing Separate you are responsible only for your return. You must list the name of your spouse and their social security number on your return. 4) Head of Household you must have a qualifying child/person 5) Qualifying widow(er) with dependent child. Exemptions/Dependents - Verify the last name and social security number are correct to prevent delays in the processing of your return. Make sure you have all income documents from all sources and report all income on your return. Interest and dividend income, unemployment income and gambling income are all taxable. The standard deduction is a set amount determined by your filing status. Itemized deductions are the total of personal expenses you incurred and you paid. You must complete the Schedule A to determine if this is more beneficial. Exemptions reduce your taxable income. Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable credit based on your earned income. If you meet the qualifications you may claim this credit whether you are single or married filing a joint tax return. If you have dependent children and earned income the credit amount is based on your earned income and number of children. You must file Schedule EIC with your return if you are claiming the credit with children. Review your return checking that all names and amounts are entered correctly. News4U (N4U): I recently had a very interesting conversation with your drummer, Sean Fuller, who happens to be an Evansville native. He absolutely insisted that you and Tyler are the nicest guys around. What’s the real story? Brian Kelley (BK): Well, we pay him really well (laughs). No, I just think we’re thankful to be where we’re at – and it has to do with how we were raised. We’re very thankful for our fans and the life that we have. Not many people get the opportunity to travel around in a tour bus and play music.
N4U: You and Tyler do a lot of co-writing, but you also have a real knack for picking songs by other writers such as “Stay.” What’s the process like behind the scenes? BK: We’ve got an amazing team behind us in Nashville – it’s a group effort. Our philosophy is “better is better.” Tyler and I are two dudes with two hearts, and we try to pick songs that we know our fans will be affected by like “Stay.”
N4U: With the success that you’ve had, you are starting to eclipse many of the bands that you originally opened for. Is that awkward in any way? BK: Man, I don’t know. I think that the cool thing about country music is that everybody is really supportive – it’s kind of like a family out here. It’s been cool to learn from the best and incorporate some of that
N4U: After the monumental success of “Cruise,” you re-mixed it with the rapper Nelly. Did you enjoy turning the track into a dance song? BK: Man, it was probably the highlight of last year. We’ve been fans of his for so long, so when we got word he was interested, we were like “heck yeah!” We probably listened to it about a hundred times within the first

knowledge into what we do. But we’ve still got a long way to go.

two days and couldn’t wait for the world to hear it. We’re still good buddies with him and plan to work with him again in the near future.
N4U: Considering all of the success with your debut album, are you being pressured to record again or will you take a moment to enjoy the ride? BK: We’re excited about the next album and plan to start recording in the next couple of months. We’ve got a song that we can’t wait to cut. But there’s not much pressure – we’re just going to do our thing and hopefully make another album that people love. The Irish Comedy Tour at the Victory Theatre by Thomas Ellis
Combining no-holds-barred humor with manic fiddle playing straight from Dublin, the irreverent Irish Comedy Tour is coming to the Victory Theatre on February 7th.
I
t’s a show unlike any other, featuring the “Comedy Barbarian,” Mike McCarthy, veteran funnyman, Derek Richards, and two freakishly-talented musicians, Derrick Keane and Damon Leibert. Together, they create the boisterous atmosphere of an Irish pub – a wild mix of inappropriate jokes and the driving dance beat of Ireland.
The brainchild of the tour, Richards kindly spoke with News4U about the show and his long comedy career. News4U (N4U): This show sounds crazy. Can you give me an idea of how it’s structured? Derek Richards (DR): Damon - dressed as a leprechaun - and Derrick start the show and get the crowd riled up with some amazing Irish music. Then I come out and bring the “sexy” for about 40 minutes followed by a couple more songs. Then Mike comes out in a kilt. He’s criminally insane, a short, bald fireplug - we call him “the bar fight at the end of the night.” The show really does feel like you’re sitting in an Irish pub. N4U: Do you find that the content of the show translates regardless of the audience? DR: We get people from all backgrounds coming to the show – German, Greek, Italian, etc. But everyone can relate, because everybody has an uncle or grandpa or grandma like the relatives we’re joking about. We’re not doing actual jokes about Ireland – it’s more focused on the family life that we experienced growing up as Irish Americans.

N4U: You’ve done a number of USO tours to entertain the troops as well as plenty of corporate gigs – talk about disparate audiences. DR: I’ve done three tours in the Middle East – performed in Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. The troops are fantastic audiences, so appreciative, because they’re just looking for a release valve. It’s extremely rewarding to be able to go there and provide that outlet for them. Corporate gigs are quite different. As with any job, you need to be able to adjust and react. I sort of pattern it after a quarterback – you know the play, but depending on the team you’re up against, you might take a look at the situation and call an audible. After 20 years of performing, I know what I can get away with in a corporate setting as opposed to the freedom of a nightclub setting – or in front of our troops.

N4U: Critics have suggested that considering your talent and experience, you should be even more popular. Is that something you’re concerned with and if so, what would it take to reach the next level? DR: I’m actually comfortable with my current level of success, but if an opportunity came along to take my comedy to another level, I would certainly welcome it. In fact, we’re going to be filming an upcoming date of the Irish Comedy Tour in high-definition, and the hope is that we can secure a deal with Comedy Central or another station to broadcast it. I think the show would play really well on television and be very cheap to produce. But, there’s still nothing like seeing it in person, so I hope all the comedy fans in Evansville will come out for the show – there’s nothing out there like it.

If you’re a fan of the theater, or just looking for a fun play to see, then come to Old National Events Plaza (formerly the Centre) in Evansville for the presentation of Bring it On!

N
ow, even though I personally would go to a play like this anyway since I’m a fan of the theater, those of you skeptics should know that this play is indeed adapted from the 2000 movie Bring it On! starring Kristen Dunst. For those of you who have no clue what Bring it On! is, the basic plot is that a champion high school cheer-squad runs into trouble when they suddenly discover they’ve been unknowingly ripping-off their routines from an all African-American squad, and set out to make it right by giving it their all at regionals with new and original routines. And even though the movie’s cast won’t be on stage, Old National Events Plaza (formerly the Centre) will be host to an equallyskilled and entertaining cast for the show. Bring it On! is an exciting production. These actresses and actors will be using their full athletic abilities to leave the audience awe-struck. In fact, the New York Times was quoted as saying, “Instead of humming the songs - or the scenery, as the old joke goes - you leave humming the gymnastics.” So, I suppose it is up to you, the reader to decide if you’re going to, as the saying goes, “bring it on!” and attend this play. EPO presents a Special Performance of
Romeo & Juliet by Jaimie Humbert
Turn down the houselights and cue the romance! On February 15 at 7 p.m. at the Victory, the Evansville Philharmonic presents Romeo and Juliet, the ultimate Valentine Day’s concert. he story of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, as they swoon TBernstein’s and sacrifice is told through three composers: Leonard West Side Story Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and
Juliet Fantasy Overture and excerpts from Prokofiev’s balletic Romeo and Juliet. “We may have to have some Kleenexes in the house,” jokes Maestro Alfred Savia, the Philharmonic conductor. “Yet it’s so beautiful.” For those familiar with the story of Juliet and her Romeo, the Philharmonic’s production is told through the creative minds of three varying composers from different eras. “Forget the ending, forget the feuding.” Savia insists audiences will get swept away by the romance and magic of the music. The production opens with Bernstein’s West Side Story Overture and the setting of New York’s West Side, where opposing gangs represent the Montagues and Capulets. West Side Story is considered the great American musical, and the overture offers a vast selection of recognizable tunes, according to Savia. Bernstein’s music is Latin-influenced and edgy, which represents the street violence and conflict of this Shakespearean adaptation. “No music is more romantic than Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet,” promises Savia. He argues that the magic of the Fantasy Overture, with its soaring themes and the pulsating sound of horns in the background, is more recognizable than the West Side Story melodies. Tchaikovsky, the great Russian
Romantic composer, captures not only the famous balcony scene but also the pivotal character of Friar Lawrence. “He’s the [vehicle] for them to get together,” says Savia. The friar secretly marries the young lovers, despite the fighting between their families. The Fantasy Overture is described as a symphonic poem which mirrors the poetry of Shakespeare’s verse. The youthful, uplifting notes of the Fantasy Overture will make audiences want to fall in love. The centerpiece of the Philharmonic’s Romeo and Juliet is Savia’s carefully constructed excerpts from Prokofiev’s ballet, Romeo and Juliet. From Prokofiev’s three suites, Savia has chosen the best of each and compiled them chronologically to tell the complete story of the famous lovers. With 12 musical excerpts, Savia admits, “This is the first time I’m doing so many selections from the ballet.” In addition to the swelling music, the Philharmonic is collaborating with the University of Evansville Theater Department to provide actors to read lines from Shakespeare’s play prior to each musical number. “It puts you in the moment,” says Savia. There will be no costumes, only readings to “absorb what Shakespeare wrote.” Prokofiev’s ballet brings to life one of the most important scenes of the story, the Capulet tomb. The moment is “so poignant and so tearful,” and the beauty of the music will move audiences in a way they’ve never experienced Romeo and Juliet. Bring your Valentine.

Gov’t Mule at the Victory by Nick Durcholz
In this their 20th year, Gov’t Mule remains a unique beast taking psych-blues-rock from the foggy days of acid rock and giving it a contemporary face.
I
n promotion of their newest record Shout! The band will be dropping by the Victory Theatre in downtown Evansville on February 21st at 8 p.m. The band originally formed as a trio and side-project of the Allman Brothers Band by guitarist Warren Haynes and then bassist, Allen Woody. Haynes was connected with original and current drummer Matt Abts through playing with him in another band called the Dickey Betts’ Band. Their debut self-titled album released in 1995. Two years later, Haynes and Woody shifted their full focus on Gov’t Mule. All was well until 2000, when the band suffered
a casualty: Allen Woody. After the band and many other artists paid tribute to Woody, Gov’t Mule had to share the attention of Haynes with several other bands. A slew of keyboardists and bassists supported Gov’t Mule in this time from Les Claypool of Primus to Paige McConnell of Phish to Jason Newstead of Metallica and more, up until 2004. Then, the band settled with bassist Andy Hess of the Black Crowes and keyboardist Danny Louis. They recorded their first album with Gov’t Mule in 2004. In 2008, Hess was replaced by current bassist Jorgen Carlsson. The new and dynamic
Shout! is their third release with the current line-up. Even with so much change on all levels over the years, they carry on as a juggernaut of a live act. On the road, you would usually find them on the lips of frequenters of the jam band circuit who lovingly refer to them as “The Mule” or “Mule.” But regardless of what your taste, the playing style of Warren Haynes needs to be witnessed by anyone who appreciates music. It is truly remarkable; a mix of precise and passionate, fluid and funky. Long live the “Mule!”

A Deluxe Stromboli was my first excursion. Huge and piled with ground seasoned sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, a sweet tomato sauce and no shortage of oregano-seasoned mozzarella cheese. These puppies are hot, whole or halved, and huge either way you cut it. Though the toasty Vienna loaf is, and has always been, what I look forward to. Then the Buffalo Chicken Pizza… A slightly-salty thin crust topped with tender, diced chicken, a vinegar-y but mild buffalo sauce, tons of mild mozz, plenty of banana peppers and garnished with a tangy ranch dressing. Loved it! The sauce was spicy and acidic and melds well with the peppers. Pizza King also has party platters available for delivery or carryout. If you need a beer and quick bite, hit up the west side or Newburgh locations.

Leroy’s was established in 1970 and has been family owned and operated since. Ms. Carl brought my personal pizza and some wings before I could even hang up my jacket. Topped with fresh veggies and meats, tasty sweet sauce and the crust…The crust is what stood out. It wasn’t too thin, certainly not thick. It was crispy and sweet, but held together almost like a perfect pie crust. Being from an Italian family, and being I’ve eaten pizza in many different cities, this crust just stood out. Sweet yet savory, crispy yet tender. Then the Fried Bologna Sandwich… Have it on breads of your choice, served with pickle, onion and mustard… Oh man, thank you so much!

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Mardi Gras Grub with
Stockwell Inn Stockwell co-owner Andrea Will shares that for Mardi Gras, the restaurant will be serving Crawfish dinners, “fresh from the Louisiana bayou.” These meals will be served with smoked sausage, potatoes, corn-onthe-cob and French bread. The restaurant will also offer fried gator, oysters on the half shell, red beans & rice, jambalaya, gumbo, drunken chicken, oyster and shrimp po’ boys, as well as their “nearly-famous White chocolate bread pudding.” When asked what prompted their family (including additional co-owners: Jerry and Betty Will and Audrey Christie) to serve Cajun food in our southwestern Indiana town, Will shares, “I have always loved Cajun food. We used to go to a restaurant that served Cajun dishes, and when they closed I decided since I loved to cook, I could make those dishes at home. Crawfish is now a staple in our house. I always wanted to fix Cajun food for Mardi Gras, but I knew I couldn’t do it by myself. In came my brother-in-law, Jason Christie. He has family in the Baton Rouge area. They along with some of their friends taught Jason the ‘real Cajun’ way of doing a crawfish boil. Every year since that, his family has been sending fresh crawfish from Louisiana to us with all the right seasonings to add to the boil. Jason does the crawfish boil; I fix all the Cajun dishes, with the help of our parents and all our employees helping with all the prep work. [M]y sister Audrey [then comes in] with her white chocolate bread pudding recipe. We have a feast! We try to have something for everybody. Some things have seafood, some don’t. Some just have chicken or smoked sausage.” The restaurant will start its Mardi Gras celebration on February 27, and it will go through Fat Tuesday on March 4. During that time, they will have special hours of operation that Saturday to open at 11 a.m. (instead of their normal 4 p.m.). Including the Sunday during Mardi Gras. Will shares, “Our customers always have such a good time they requested to give them another day. It really is a festive atmosphere.” During that time period, Stockwell Inn will also have great drink specials every day. They will also be selling beads with all of the proceeds going to It Takes a Village Canine Rescue and Wish Upon a Star.
For those interested in Stockwell’s standard fare, visitors can stop by for their made from scratch plate lunches, homemade soups, burgers and appetizers including the crowd favorite “hot chips.” Will shares that they have “one of the best breaded tenderloins you will ever have,” in addition to their ruebens and hot browns. She also says, “We have a huge selection of sandwiches- both breaded and grilled if you want something a little healthier.” Also on the lighter side, they have several types of salads and wraps. They recommend their chopped steak or rib-eye dinners for evening guests, and they encourage all patrons to try one of their many desserts. crispy outside boasted a familiar, comforting flavor but also a slight note of peanut came through. They were very savory but still on the light side. Then, a slow-building, pleasantly warm spice became apparent from red pepper flake. The calamari itself was tender with an ever-so-subtle hint of the sea. Fantastico! Next up to the plate was the clean-up hitter, the beast that is Mama Mia’s Double Deluxe pizza. This is a hefty pie not for calorie accountants or the small of stomach. It boasts a double-crust layered with cheese, sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, pepperoni and pepperoncinis. And the flavor is just as burly with a variety of textures to keep you entertained. It is earthy, savory, tangy goodness. There is minimal sauce in play here but the freshness of the ingredients more than carry this pizza. The crust is done right, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. What a pie! Lastly, I tried the entrée Parmesan Gnocchis. Potato gnocchis in a creamy, sundried tomato sauce with parmesan cheese. These are little, round savory bites of heaven. Absolutely irresistible. They boast an impossibly tender texture with a bold cheese flavor. This dish is 100% comfort food with a fancy twist. Looking for an excuse to head to Tropicana Evansville? Mama Mia’s is it!

rom privately owned-and-operated small operations to massive national chains, there is no shortage of Italian cuisine in Evansville. I’ve had the chance to dine at - what I would think to be - a large portion of them and while they all have their own clear strengths, none of them truly stood out to me. That was until very recently, when I had the opportunity to be treated at the newest member of the Tropicana Evansville food and beverage family: Mama Mia’s. As a whole, I felt that this Italian eatery achieved a difficult balancing act. They are a culmination of the positive aspects of both hometown joints and large chains. With very reasonable prices, homemade dough, a wine list and a simple menu that still holds a great variety of dishes, you can go the casual route or the classy route. I believe it even reaches as far as bordering upon the resplendent red of the fine dining upper-echelon. Upon entering, (I would realize later that) the atmosphere of the restaurant reflected the theme of versatility. I absorbed middle-of-the-road lighting, an open-air view of the pizza oven, rich wood tones and red and white checkerboard table covers. I was instantly comfortable. So, casual vibe? Check. As for a romantic rendezvous? It doesn’t boast the surroundings of some of the most picturesque patios in the tri-state, but it doesn’t have to. I’d take my special someone in a heartbeat because the food speaks volumes. First up was the Mia Caprese salad. With fresh mozzarella balls, ripe tomatoes, basil, extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar, it was an earthy and zesty wake-up call for my taste buds. The transition of flavors was like a mini-journey in this dish. It is a taste of the garden with a piney kick, and then smoothes out with the subtle saltiness of the tender mozzarella balls and finally, a sweet and sour punch from the balsamic vinegar. Indeed, a classy and multi-faceted starter. The next appetizer was the Calamari Fritti. Not the most accessible of dishes but unique, and I had to try it. The ring-shaped snacks were a wonderful light tan hue and proved extremely addictive. The

rea chef Blake Kollker is ready to whip your diet into shape. His Perfectly Fresh meals are “portioncontrolled meals sealed in microwaveable containers, made with local grass-fed beef, no hormone, no antibiotic chicken, local vegetables and whole grains.
Three size varieties will be delivered daily to all Bob’s gym locations and placed in coolers for customers to pick which options they would like [in order to] reheat for 60 seconds and enjoy a convenient, affordable, healthy and delicious meal. Right now about 70% of our meals are gluten-free and we believe we will get close to 100% within a year. And we will have a vegetarian daily as well as a Paleo meal.” Overall, Perfectly Fresh gives you around 50 different options, and eventually they are looking to offer as many as 100 that will be rotated with the seasons and based on what is available from local farmers. Kollker shares that, “The most

popular one so far is ‘Spaghetti and Meatballs,’ which includes turkey meatballs made with quinoa, zucchini, carrot, low sodium ketchup, low sodium gluten-free soy, and egg. These are placed on top of brown rice spaghetti and spaghetti squash and topped with house made marinara.” So, how do Perfectly Fresh Meals help you stay healthy? According to Kollker, “There is no magic dust or compounds in these meals. It’s really more about eating the way we used to before convenience trumped nutrition. All of these meals are ‘complete’ in their nutrient profiles. Of course, people come out with new diets and plans, but we just wanted to make delicious balanced meals that are affordable but taste like they could be in an upscale restaurant. The breakdown on all of these meals on average will be 360 calories, 25-28 grams lean protein, 35-39 grams of carbs, 10-12 grams of heart-healthy fat, and less than 500 mg of sodium.” To create the meals, Kollker starts with what is delicious versus what is healthy, though. He adds, “From there, we use a computer program that links to the USDA nutritional database and we can finalize and tweak the meals to meet our nutritional guidelines.” According to Kollker, the issue is that “54% of Americans eat until their plate is clean, so as portion size has gone up so has our waistline. You are not going to have leftovers from your meals but you should be comfortably full…We are eliminating the crap that’s in the food most people buy. We have no saltwater pump in our proteins, no mounds of sugar and salt added to the meals to keep them ‘fresh’ for months at a time, no man-made fats to trick our brains. This is real food, cooked with care.” The Perfectly Fresh Meals are prepared fresh daily, and their kitchen is set-up to do around 2,000 meals per day. Their high volume lets them keep their prices low. Kollker shares, “Anyone can enjoy these meals. Just walk into any Bob’s Gym location and pick your meal out of the refrigerator. You do NOT need to be a member of Bob’s Gym. One meal will cost $7, however you can bring that cost down to as low as $5.50 each if you buy a package of meals for the future. By starting on the official quit date, this fun promotional program gives tobacco users a new incentive to break their tobacco addiction.
For participants, the challenge is to not smoke, that is, to not inhale tobacco smoke OR use products containing tobacco including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, spit tobacco or electronic cigarettes for a one month period. To be eligible to win, contestants must be 18 years or older, a legal resident of Indiana, a current tobacco user and stay tobacco free for the entire month of March. The registration period is open until February 28. Entries must be emailed by midnight on February 28th. The Biggest Quitter winners will be drawn at random on April 1 and tested to make sure they are tobacco-free to be eligible to claim their prize. The Indiana Tobacco Quitline is a free phone based quit coaching service. he tri-state always rallies around someone in need, and it’s time for everyone to step up once again and support a very special young woman. Randi Idleman is a local teenager in a fight for her life. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) last June, the 16-year-old North High School student has been undergoing chemotherapy at the IU North Hospital in Carmel, Ind. Randi’s father is deceased, so the situation is particularly difficult for her mother, Valerie. Between the cost of the treatments and the travel, the financial strain is great. And yet, through it all, Valerie remains convinced that her daughter will fully recover with the help of the community. On February 8th, Someplace Else Nightclub will host “Rally for Randi,” a lighthearted evening of entertainment to raise funds for travel and various expenses. The main event will be a variety show featuring comedy and glamour drag performers. Prior to the show, a meet and greet is scheduled so folks can chat with the entertainers who are donating their time, talent and tips. Please come out and help Randi beat cancer. She’s a great girl who loves school and volunteering at the Dream Center, an Evansville nonprofit agency that serves hundreds of at-risk youth. —Thomas Ellis

n Sunday, March 2nd Evansville’s Victory Theatre is offering the opportunity for individuals to set aside the popcorn and pajama combo that usually accompanies Oscar night. Instead, they extend an invitation to attend the Theatre’s 2nd Annual Oscar Gala. The event will not only allow participants to view the 2014 Oscars in the Victory, it will also provide a number of other entertaining activities. These include a chance to show off in a “true Evansville red carpet experience” with prize giveaways, refreshments and a silent auction. A portion of each ticket (sold along with the entirety of the amount earned from the silent auction) will go to benefit Gilda’s Club Evansville. Gilda’s Club is a cancer support community which provides networking, support groups, workshops, educational programs and social activities for members. Gilda’s Club was founded in memory of comedian Gilda Radner. During her treatment, Radner became part of a cancer support community, and she wished that anyone dealing with cancer would be able to receive the kind of support she found there. After passed away at the age of 42 in 1989, Joanna Bull (her cancer therapist) and Gene Wilder began to plan Gilda’s Club, a free cancer support community. The first Gilda’s Club opened in New York City in June 1995. The goal is to improve the overall quality of life from diagnosis through treatment and beyond for individuals of all ages impacted by cancer. Those who attend the Victory Theatre’s 2nd Annual Oscar Gala will get to view the 2014 Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, in Evansville’s beautiful Victory Theatre. They will also get to participate in a number of social events - along with the change to win a prize in the giveaway. Enjoy a star-strewn night for a great cause!

News4U (N4U): What inspired you to become a DJ? Randy Weber (RW): I didn’t really plan of becoming a DJ, but I bought a lot of albums, and friends kept inviting me to parties. I then kept doing it for fun, and then one time at wedding reception, a friend asked me if I wanted to do his daughter’s wedding. N4U: What makes you different from all the other wedding DJ’s out there? RW: I sit down on with the bride, and get a feel of what mood they want for the wedding - getting personal with them. I also have made a video on my website, djrandyweber@yahoo.com - which no one else had done - and often show it to clients when sitting down to talk with them showing them exactly what they’ll be getting. N4U: Do you have any signature activities? RW: I tell the bride and groom that I’m the guy in the background, and can get the place jumping for the bride and groom before they even enter the building. I also play lots of games with the families - like seeing how many people the bride and groom could get in a train and fun games like that.

ric Tillman lives for God. “And walk in the love as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling aroma.” - Ephesians 5:2. He said this passage is how he wants to live his life, the way Jesus lived, as a sacrifice. Tillman, or E2 as he is coming to be known, is a Christian hip-hop artist and ordained minister. “It all started in 2008 when I moved from St. Louis to Evansville. I feel like this move was definitely ushered by the Lord as I left everything I knew, including my family and all of my friends,” said Tillman. Tillman had one brother here who began talking to him about music and the ministry, he said. He joined Rock Global Outreach Ministries and gave his life to God that day. “After that everything started to change. Including the type of music I listened to. I started listening to secular music and listened to all genres of Christian music,” said Tillman. Shortly after that, Tillman began to write and produce music, even singing a song he wrote during revival at church. The responses were positive, and even encouraging. So, he began ministering through his music at various churches and local events. Later, Tillman was signed to Nkosi Records. “I found out that there was a local concert being held at the YMCA with a Christian artist named KB, that I really like,” said Tillman.

He went and after the concert one of his friends told him the two men putting on the concert were scouting the area for local talent. Tillman sent them some of his music. “Within a week they wanted to meet with me to discuss what they were wanting to do in the Evansville area, with starting a Christian hip-hop label,” said Tillman. Tillman was signed to the label on Apr. 4, 2013 and shortly thereafter began working on his debut album, A.G.B.T.G. (All Glory Be To God). Tillman decided he needed a stage name. “I prayed and asked God for a stage name that I could go by and he gave me ‘E2,’” said Tillman. E2 has multiple meanings, the first being that Tillman’s full name is Eric Tillman Jr., so he is literally E2. It also represents Ephesians 5:2, the Bible verse from earlier. The letter ‘E’ is the fifth letter in the alphabet. He said A.G.B.T.G. is more than an acronym to him; it is what he lives by. “When people listen to my album I want them to get that our life is not our own. That God has put us all here for a purpose and that everything that we do, and obtain, here on this earth is for His glory. Even if that means that we have to go through things that seem hard,” said Tillman. what looked like a pumpkin with a lot of strings attached to a long, fretless board. “I walked up and announced ‘whatever that is, I want to know how to play it,’” she says. The instrument in question turned out to be the kamale ngoni, a West African harp or lute made out of calabash. It immediately appealed to Mazkoori. “I’ve played a lot of stringed instruments, but the ngoni is different, because the strings face you when you hold it. So, it’s a much more intimate experience than a guitar, banjo or sitar,” she explains. When her year in Ghana was up, Mazkoori completed her degree, applied for the Peace Corps and spent the next three years in Namibia. There, she formed a band and performed in public for the first time, an “amazing” experience that made her reluctant to return home.

erformances by local group Gitgo are few and far between, but the Persian duo’s unique mix of West African instruments and flamenco influences leaves a lasting impression. Virtually impossible to categorize, the sound that 26 year old Newburgh resident Anita Mazkoori and her younger cousin, Iranian-born Sahand Abbassi, create together is a direct reflection of their exposure to different cultures as well as a shared musical DNA. To call it ‘world music’ is vaguely accurate; after all, the two lived apart in different countries for most of their lives before meeting again a few years ago. But that description really only scratches the surface. After a false start with the trumpet in grade school, Mazkoori’s interest in musician Ani DiFranco inspired her to pick up the guitar. “I never had lessons or any idea what I was doing, but eventually I taught myself the basics and started playing with some friends,” she says. Things got interesting when Mazkoori graduated from Castle High School and headed to IU to pursue an International Studies degree. The program required her to study abroad for a year, and the destination was a no-brainer. “I chose Ghana because I’ve always been interested in Africa. I absolutely love everything about it – the food, the people, the hot weather and especially the music,” she explains. Upon arriving, Mazkoori’s first priority was to learn a new instrument. Suitcase still in hand, she noticed a man playing
Back in Newburgh and missing her band, Mazkoori was feeling creatively lost. She continued to practice her growing arsenal of instruments (including kalimba and setar) and write but wasn’t equipped to go solo. Salvation came in the form of Abbassi, who moved to Newburgh from Malaysia after landing an internship with Mazkoori’s father, a civil engineer. In the window of time before Abbassi left to study at Southern Illinois University, the two cousins struck up a beautiful musical partnership. “Sahand plays classical guitar in a flamenco style which complements the kamale ngoni really well,” Mazkoori says. “He helped me to heal after leaving my band in Namibia.” Gitgo debuted at Greek’s Pizzeria and has since added Café Arizou, Raffi’s, Babel, Penny Lane and, most recently, Winzerwald Winery to its resume. “The reaction has really surprised us,” says Mazkoori. “Our sound is hard to describe – every song is different, because we switch instruments frequently and improvise quite a bit.” The only thing holding Gitgo back now is distance. “In an ideal world, we would be living in the same city, really pushing our music, because I just love the way Sahand plays. Valentine’s Day is always that one time a year where one tries to impress his or her sweetie. Treat them to a “magical night of great comedy and dancing” which happens to be right around the corner.

ermania-Maennerchor Ballroom will host a Valentine party featuring the comedy and music of Todd Yohn, a reoccurring guest on the Bob & Tom Show, presented by the Joke Factory. “[It’s] a night of comedy, mixed with music and dancing, and we’ll serve a meal,” said Jay Carter, owner of the Joke Factory. Yohn formed a band, called The Time Flyers after he retired. The band will be playing at the event as well. “I was a musician before I was a comedian and I have always loved playing music,” Yohn said. The band performs mostly original work and a few covers. While the target audience is for people 40-and-up, anyone can attend and tickets range in price from $20 per person (show
only, not including dinner), to $55 for general admission, which includes festival seating and dinner for two - up to $75 for the VIP package - which includes VIP seating, dinner for two and photos with Yohn. The show will open with some local talent; comedians and Yohn will close out the comedy portion of the show before he and the band perform the rest of the evening. “I don’t get tired because I’m doing what I love,” Yohn said. He said unlike other comedians, he doesn’t pick on anyone and he just wants people to come out and have a good time. Southern Tier Old Man Winter Ale

Here’s a winter seasonal from Southern Tier, this one classified as an old ale. It pours a clear, dark amber with one finger of offwhite head and leaves behind a lot of lacing after about five minutes. The nose is earthy malts, caramel, toffee, some pine and floral hops. The taste is a bit watery for an old ale with moderate sweetness (but not too) and light bitterness, toasted caramel malt. Tastes more like a bitter than an old ale in my opinion. I enjoyed it. Probably wouldn’t order a second.

This beer has a small white head that a slowly disappears from atop the ruby beer. Brewed with three types of hops and two types of malts, a fruity hop aroma stays at the front of the nose. The hops stay upon tasting the beer, but malt notes and some spiciness also seem to come through on the tongue. Fans of hoppy beers should definitely try this offering from Southern Tier.

This was a clear, amber beer and once again a little on the hoppy side. I could smell it when I poured it. I would consider this a middle-of-the-road IPA. Sixpoint Global Warmer

Sixpoint calls this one an Imperial Red ale. It pours up dark amber in color, cloudy and with a pretty one finger tight beige head. Strangely, there are a lot of chunks of sediment floating in it (think “snow globe”) — a little shocking at first. The aroma is of grapefruit and pine hops. Underlying that is a subtle malt aroma. “Lovely” the taste is of citrus and floral hops— big and bold. There’s a lot of character and balance there. Yes, it’s definitely hoppy and not very malty but, it’s not overly bitter either, in my opinion. I’ll add this one to my shopping list!

This winter warmer-style beer fills the glass with amber beer and a thick off-white head that takes its time to evaporate. The scent is full of grapefruit from the generous amount of hops used. The hop flavor stays while drinking the beer. It seems unusual for a winter seasonal beer to have such a high hop presence, but Sixpoint did a great job with this one. This heavier beer might pair well with spicy foods

As soon as I opened it, I could smell the overpowering hops. I liked Sixpoint’s other beer I tried but this one was just okay. It has a 7% ABV. This must have been the month of the IPA, but then again I have noticed everyone is putting out hopped-up beer. I guess they jumped on the wagon also, and still not a fan.

Here’s a twist. Brown ale brewed with real toasted coconut. I was skeptical. It pours up with a healthy two finger head and has an appealing, clear chestnut brown color. The nose is mostly roasted malts with subtle coconut and vanilla scents. (pleasant) The taste was nice like a good brown ale with a coconut wave of flavor that comes through at the finish. Unique, but not gimmicky. The coconut works nice with brown ale and although I’d not likely drink one after another, I’ll definitely have it again.

This beer has a dark brown color and a malty sweetness dominates the nose. The sweet malt flavor continues when drinking the beer. The high levels of carbonation might turn-off some. After a few seconds, the taste of coconut begins to come through the beer and becomes more noticeable as the beer is consumed. This beer is a good example of what a beer brewed with uncommon ingredients can be.

This is a clear, dark amber-colored beer. It had a very creamy flavor and I would best describe it as similar to a nut brown with a little twist. I would assume the flavor would be the coconut and I would have to go buy some of this immediately.

This straw-colored beer pours a thin white head that quickly disappears from the glass. The smell of citrusy hops fills the nostrils. The hop profile continues with the tasting, but is balanced by wheat flavors and carbonation. This crisp and refreshing beer could be enjoyed by both hopheads and wheat beer lovers. Pair it with spicy foods to balance the hops or pizza to complement the wheat notes. A great offering from Evansville’s newest brewery.

An American Wheat ale that pours-up a cloudy amber and produces an inviting bubbly beige one finger head. Its nose is of citrus hops, spices, malts and wheat, mild but pleasant. Taste follows aroma with a crisp, drinkable, light and mildly-hoppy experience. Overall, this is a solid brew that could be enjoyed at any time of year. I’m sure I’ll have plenty more of this one.
The hops aroma hit me as soon as I opened it. It says it is wheat, but I would say it is a lighter IPA. It did have a light, wheat flavor but the hops overshadowed that. I actually like it and am very pleased that it was from one of our local brewers. I usually don’t like a hoppy beer but I liked this one.
Random Beer Facts! A small Michigan microbrewery turned down a potentially huge endorsement deal with Nickelback in part because they hated the band. The spot would have involved a delivery truck pulling up to a frat party with crowd shots of kids holding the beers. Dark Horse ultimately declined, though, because they didn’t particularly like Nickelback or the frat parties depicted in the potential music video. If you had a burgeoning but small business, would you promote it with someone you dislike?

Leticia Bajuyo creates, lives and teaches in southern Indiana where she is an Associate Professor of Art at Hanover College. Growing up and living in the Midwest, specifically in areas that often feel in-between places of interest, Bajuyo’s aesthetic was influenced by the landscape and the pace of rural communities. In her artwork, Bajuyo explores the tension between art and craft, between passé and popular and between desiring and discarding. Additionally, growing up in a biracial, bicultural and bilingual household helped generate
her interest in blending dissimilar materials while in search for a cohesive center. When designing and creating, her approach to technique has a do-it-yourself, problemsolving attitude that is guided by concept and yields combinations such as 8,000 donated CD’s and Theremins or player piano rolls and typewriters. There are few more iconic comedies than the Blues Brothers. Nearly 35 years after its theatrical release, the film is bigger than ever, thanks in large part to the on-screen chemistry between co-writers Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi – and, of course, the music. Blues classics like “Soul Man,” “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “Sweet Home Chicago” are delivered with near religious fervor.

ow you can experience all the laughs and wild musical performances live on stage when the Official Blues Brothers Revue comes to the Jasper Arts Center on February 8th. Produced by Dan Aykroyd and Judy Belushi, it’s been called “astounding” and “like the real thing” by the critics. The stars of the show, Wayne Catania (Jake) and Kieron Lafferty (Elwood), kindly spoke with News4U about the legend of the Blues Brothers. News4U (N4U): To my surprise, my 14 year old, super-hero-loving nephew asked for the Blues Brothers DVD this Christmas. What’s your take on the longevity and wideranging appeal of the film? Kieron Lafferty: It came out in 1980, but it still resonates, because it’s one long road story about two characters that are slightly – or completely - sociopathic (laughs). They’re on a Robin Hood sort of mission that is exaggerated for cinematic effect, but people are drawn to it. And it’s also a movie that’s just pretty dang funny. N4U: You’ve been honing your act for years. Did working with Judy Belushi and Dan Aykroyd help you perfect it? Wayne Catania: It’s like we went to Blues Brothers boot camp with them – we got to know the characters intimately. Plus, we’ve also been working together on a television show based on the lives of Jake and Elwood, writing a pilot episode. Kieron and I have been performing as the Blues Brothers so long that we’ve kind of just become them. Judy sees us not as a tribute act but as Jake and Elwood.

After the success of last year’s inaugural Mardi Gras Franklin Crawl, the association is expanding the scope of the event, starting with the 1st Annual Franklin Street Gumbo Cook-Off. Gumbo is a Mardi Gras mainstay, a soup/stew of celery, onion, bell peppers, seafood, meat and spices. No two gumbos are the same, so it’s the ideal dish to serve up for competition. he Evansville Youth Hockey Association (EYHA) is a wonderful non-profit organization that gets tri-state kids out of the house and onto the ice. Of the many great programs that EYHA has offered, the upcoming Try Hockey for Free Day is perhaps the most exciting. Boys and girls ages 4-9 who have never participated in a previous EYHA program now have the opportunity to lace-up the skates and experience the sport of hockey for free. According to Hockey Director Craig MacDonald, it is the perfect starting point for kids getting into athletics. “Not only is youth hockey the best sports option, it is also one of the safest,” he explains. “There are less than half as many hockey related injuries per year as compared to baseball, basketball or soccer.” Signing up is easy, and kids only need some warm clothes and a pair of winter gloves or mittens. It is advised that equipment be borrowed from hockeyplaying friends as EYHA has limited quantities of helmets and sticks. But skates will be provided – just be sure to wear long socks. Try Hockey for Free Day is scheduled for March 1st from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Swonder Ice Arena, 209 N. Boeke Rd. Participation is limited to one session per child.

Love has taken on a predominantly romantic meaning in our society. There is something big the media has been leaving out in their mass advertising to make us feel that we NEED someone to complete ourselves. There is this one huge step that everyone should take before they attempt to find romantic love... and that’s SELF LOVE. If you plan on having any type of functional relationship in your life, loving yourself is where you need to start. People will mirror how you treat yourself. The more great things you instill in yourself and the more ways you can take care of yourself, will also prove beneficial for the people in your life. I want you, in this month of February, and quite possibly more often throughout the year, to rekindle your relationship with yourself. Take yourself to dinner, read books that interest you, pick up a hobby that you’ve always wanted to and most importantly, start to learn how you really want to be treated. Don’t just hold others to treating you at that standard but make sure you treat yourself that way as well! Once you start building yourself up with love, share it! The Lego Movie
Warner Bros. Into the Lego toy-line universe! We are immersed into a bright and rich, digitally-animated feature with nothing but Legos and their characters (Batman is one of them). An ordinary Lego guy, Emmet (the voice of Chris Pratt), is mistaken for being the last living “master builder,” the only one who can save the Lego Universe. What we have here is another re-incarnation of the reluctant hero... The chosen one. He is the leader who is told that he has certain (building block) powers and must save everyone with the help of a wizard and some other DC heroes. The movie is from writer and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street) and features the voices of Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell and Liam Niason. Another computer animated gem, made by people who know what they are doing and love it.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/ Columbia In the future, a Detroit cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinneman) is critically injured in a car bombing. OmniCorp, lead by business shark Raymond Sellars (the beloved Michael Keaton), decides to put what’s left of Murphy’s body inside a cybernetic organism: a robot... A robotic cop. Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight franchise, The Professional) plays the creator of this man-inside-machine. This remake of the 1987 classic has fans of the original divided... Some are excited, yet most see it as a typical, watered down cash-cow for the studio, in the height of the superhero frenzy (I think the suit looks like a blend of Iron Man and Batman, while the original 1987 suit still holds up well). Others see it as taking what was originally a very violent and satirical movie, and PG-13ing it for the masses, thereby sanitizing and limiting itself. A new take on a classic movie.

Universal Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are two undercover agents (one is DEA and the other is naval intelligence) who, after robbing a bank in an effort to steal money from a Mexican drug cartel, form an unlikely partnership after being double-crossed by their higher-ups. Betrayals, surprises, chases and more-than-plenty of gunfire (and its effects on the human body) arise as a direct result of their loyalties to all and to none. Denzel’s and Wahlberg’s charm enhance the witty, fast-paced, almost Quentin Tarantino-esque dialogue; their words really shine... and Bill Paxton plays a wonderfully-bloodthirsty, rogue CIA agent. This movie borrows from the strengths of the good buddy-cop movies from the 80’s and 90’s and once it gets going, it doesn’t stop. And I cared about the characters. If you like action, you will like it a lot. I did.
We’re The Millers
Warner Bros. Take a stripper (Jennifer Aniston), a low-on-the-totum-poll marijuana dealer (Jason Sudeikis) and two teenagers and put them on an RV to cross into Mexico from the United States and back, smuggling a copious amount of pot. If you like movies of this sort, you probably already know that this is going to be a funny farce. When David Clarke (Jason Sudeikis) gets his weed and money taken from him, his boss offers him a chance at redemption, bringing back a small amount of pot from Mexico... Even though the “small amount” is much more than what small-time David had been lead to believe. So, he enlists the help of fellow stripper, the lovely Aniston, and a couple of local teenagers to pose as an inconspicuous, happy family while crossing the Mexican border and dealing with customs... I am very excited about a new acoustic project with Matt Camp of Calling Corners. I’ve been fronting my own band for the past few years and have recently been playing with the Classic Rock band The Relics. Meanwhile, Matt has been working with his band Blame the Radio. Playing as an acoustic duo gives us the opportunity to perform stripped down arrangements of songs in more intimate venues. WHAT THEY COVER:
We will be playing favorites focusing on the 80’s and 90’s. We’ve both been at this a while and pride ourselves on song selection as well as our performance skills. THEIR INFLUENCES:

cd reviews Reverend Horton Heat Rev Victory Records 4.5/5
The king of pycho-billy has returned. Nearly five years since releasing Laughin’ & Cryin’ with the Reverend Horton Heat, guitar legend Jim Heath is back with Rev, an album as streamlined as the title. It gets to the heart of what his trio, the Reverend Horton Heat, has been all about for over the last two decades: surf guitar played with head-shaking dexterity, backed by a truly swinging rhythm section with a penchant for speed. “Victory Lap” sets the pace, a driving instrumental with more than a hint of Dick Dale. Heath matches the godfather of surf music’s nimble playing style and injects enough twists and turns to make your head spin. It’s one of the trio’s finest moments. Heath’s sense of humor emerges on “Zombie Dumb,” an updated “Wipe-Out” for the walking dead. Less funny but more rocking, “Schizoid” is an old-school punk anthem with a mad beat that reappears on the rollicking “Scenery Going By.” The spaghetti western influence is all over the track from the “Hang ‘Em High” guitar licks to Heath’s imposing vocal delivery. Fast and loud, “Smell of Gasoline” is Rev’s crowning glory and contains a telling couplet: “If I knew then what I know now/ I’d be all over that, all over that and how.”
Bohren & Der Club of Gore Piano Nights Ipecac Recordings 4/5
Piano Nights is a wholly unexpected album from long-serving, German black metal quartet, Bohren & Der Club of Gore. Over the course of nine tracks, the band comes across more as a jazz nightclub act; all that’s missing are some martinis and a haze of smoke. To their credit (and my pleasant surprise), this completely polar opposite approach really works. Living up to its billing, the album is constructed on the foundation of glacially-paced piano with sprinklings of marimba, sax, synthesizer and sparse drumming. It’s dark and comforting at the same time, the very definition of great ambient music. Those familiar with Brian Eno’s Music for Airports or the second side of David Bowie’s Low will recognize a kindred spirit at work here. From the opening track, “Im Rauch,” the German quartet’s agenda is apparent - to eschew reality and enter a meditative state. This mindfreeing atmosphere is enhanced by the album’s composition; though there are breaks between the songs, it’s essentially one melody that drifts in and out for the better part of 40 minutes, subtly morphing from track to track. Frankly, black metal never sounded this good – or this gentle. Piano Nights is a welcome break from all the noise.

Turkuaz
A Live Affair Self-Released 4.5/5 In the age of laptop musicians, there aren’t a lot of 9-piece bands out there – or at least ones not playing polka. But Brooklyn-based Turkuaz crams the stage with an army of musicians on a mission to bring the funk. Some months ago, the band invaded Lamasco’s Bar and left everyone gasping for air after a relentless set that was – as advertised – “louder, faster and harder than all the rest.” The rhythm section simply destroyed, so insanely tight that the sweaty crowd was pinned to the dance floor. Long story short, Turkuaz is a live juggernaut. Containing 12 of the band’s favorite recordings from shows during last year’s music festival circuit, A Live Affair is a microcosm of what makes these nine Brooklyn musicians click – and tick. Classic tracks like “Monkey Fingers” and “Coast to Coast” build on the obvious Parliament Funkadelic influence, stretching the grooves to the breaking point but never losing the beat that’s on permanent lockdown. And while you may have to close your eyes to imagine the “visual circus” that the band is famous for, you can sense the controlled chaos in the “Give Up the Funk” rhythms of “20 Dollar Bill” and “Hold On, I’m Comin’.” Like George Clinton, Turkuaz tears the roof off the sucker.

The Astronaut Don’t Panic Records I would venture to guess that many young people have never even heard the term ‘rock opera’ but the band Wax Fang just released its newest album of the same genre titled The Astronaut. It tells the story of a single astronaut in space, who becomes separated from his ship and is sucked into a black hole. To most, this would seem to be the end of our character, but no. I’ll let you figure out the rest. I really enjoyed the music in this album. The use of synthetic sound contributes greatly to a feeling of loneliness in the darkness of space. Eardrums, prepare for blast off!

Maui Tears Dine Alone Records 4/5 I’d be willing to wager a few bucks that psychrockers Sleepy Sun worship at the altar of OK Computer. The band uses Radiohead’s masterpiece as a blueprint – particularly tracks like “Airbag,” Subterranean Homesick Alien” and “The Tourist” – to create their own excellent album, exploring new territory in the process. It doesn’t hurt that singer Bret Costantino’s voice has, at times, a distinct Thom Yorke/Bono resonance, either. His melodies are mired in reverb, distant and dreamy, politely allowing the often brilliant guitar work to steal the show. Maui Tears starts strong with “The Lane,” a mid-tempo track that immediately harkens back to the mid-90’s British music scene with a touch of Unforgettable Fire era U2. The bass riff is Adam Clayton-simple, holding the rhythm in place while the treated guitars swirl around. And it just gets better from there. “Slowdown” not only recalls “The Tourist” and its Pink Floyd vibe, it even borrows the main lyric; the result is equally melodramatic. “1132” ramps up the distortion with a riff worthy of the Cult and a serious wah wah solo. The title track builds brilliantly with a good minute of e-bow guitar before the drums enter and it all gets psychedelic with some Jonny Greenwood-esque shredding. —Tommy Ellis
A fan of garage punk? Then The Pack A.D.’s new album Do Not Engage is worth a listen. The band has a great sound and sports some pretty clever lyrics. The band hails from Vancouver and has toured extensively, gaining a fan base. The duo was featured on “Last Call with Carson Daly.” My personal favorite from the album was “Big Shot.”
Throwdown Intolerance eOne Music
For those of you out there who are heavy metal fans, the band Throwdown is making a comeback with their first album in four years. The band has a sound that is similar to many other popular artists and yet, somehow still original. While I am not really a fan of heavy metal, I did enjoy the sound of the guitar, particularly in “Suffer, Conquer.” Just call me a sucker for strings.
