MEAT, MUD, COUNTRY TUNES, COUNTY FAIRS… ‘MERICA >> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, The collection of events this month (and into the beginning of the next) carries with it so much down home patriotism it makes George Washington drinking a Coca-Cola, holding a Remington rifle, driving a Ford Model T while listening to Bob Dylan, look communist. First, for the newest installment of our Best of the Tri-State food guide, we chose a culinary genre that evolved alongside our country and is consistently gaining steam (smoke): barbeque. The Best of the Tri-State Barbeque Guide is sure to assist you in finding the perfect pork (chicken or beef) to please your palate. Our tri-state area actually stands out among the various barbeque styles of the nation due to a common usage of mutton in western Kentucky. Go from eating like a Viking (minus the tangy sauces and smoky rubs), to training like one with Viking Assault at the Vanderburgh Co. 4-H Center in early August. Drop all restraint to scale walls, churn mud and blaze a trail with extreme prejudice, but most importantly, have a blast! Besides, you need energy for the shindig post-assault. Also at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center is an event most every American can relate to: the county fair. Take the whole family to the Vanderburgh County Fair to enjoy all of the carnival food, games, motorsports and pageants their little red, white and blue hearts can handle.

What is a month that celebrates America without some tunes? The Summer Country Nights Series at the Victory Theatre hits full stride in July when Eric Paslay comes to show the tri-state how he parties on a “Friday Night,” but on a Saturday night instead. Then, also in early August, set aside some time to experience the Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriters Festival in Henderson, Ky. In no other place, can you witness so many creative minds singing the songs they wrote that you love. Don’t forget to check out our latest installment of the Best of Summer Bar Guide. And by all means, make sure to support and enjoy any one of the various, local Forth of July celebrations! All of this and much more is inside 4U!

Happy Independence Day!

2014

Back by popular demand for a fourth consecutive year, Viking Assault keeps exceeding expectations. Participation for the survivor race/mud bath has grown exponentially since the inaugural 2011 event and shows no sign of slowing down.

W

ith just over three miles of rough terrain and challenging obstacles (an elaborate design of mazes, bars, hurdles, tunnels and walls), Viking Assault tests the limits of physical endurance, yet it’s all in the name of having a good time with friends and family. Runners are encouraged to participate at their own comfort level – even dress up – and spectators can catch all the action for free. After the race, some of the area’s best bands will take to the stage and rock out as the beer flows. It all happens on August 2 at the Vanderburgh County 4H Center.

Co-Race Director Adam Keister spoke with News4U about the fourth edition of Viking Assault. News4U (N4U): This event just keeps getting bigger and better. Have you hit on just the right format or will there be changes? Adam Keister (AK): The course always changes a little bit and the obstacles, too, but some things will stay the same. Last year, we added CrossFit for the first time, and we’re bringing it back as well as mud volleyball. People have been begging to play, so we’re increasing from 16 teams to either 24 or 32. Also, the Marines were a huge part of last year’s race, and they’re coming back again to help us set everything up and tear everything down. It’s great having them out there. N4U: What do you expect this year in terms of attendance? AK: Every year, we have doubled the number of race participants as well as the number of spectators. Last year, we had over 3000 people total involved in some way, shape or form. We’re certainly hoping to exceed that number this year.

N4U: What can you tell us about the race and post-race entertainment? AK: Right now we have three bands scheduled to play, including Akacia and Sideshow Romance – and lots of bands are contacting me wanting to play. We’re considering putting a band in place at the start/finish line as well as by the mud volleyball area. N4U: What’s the biggest difference between Viking Assault and other survivor races? AK: Viking Assault is really all about having fun. We want the course to be challenging, but we’re not into shocking people or some of the crazier things that races have. I’ve always said this is a chance for adults to get out and behave like a child again for a day – forget that Monday morning they have to go back to the grind. It’s a chance to relax, be free and roll around in the mud. After the last leg of the race is through, we even allow all the kids to come and play in the mud pit. N4U: Any great Viking Assault moments you would like to share? AK: No one ever believes me, but one year we had a couple of 77year-old women that came out dressed in tutus. They walked the entire course with their husbands who helped them over the walls and stuff, and they brought their own personal photographer to follow them around. They did it just for themselves with no concern for time or anything.

Bring your kids and your friends and support this great event and the participating charities, Shriners and It Takes a Village. Visit vikingassault.com for times and to register for the event.

Pauly Shore & Live

@ by Thomas Ellis

You probably know him best as “The Weasel” from his MTV days and from mid90s films like Encino Man, but there’s a lot more to Pauly Shore than a goofy laugh and affected surfer-speak.

T

he 46-year-old comedian may be on the downside of fame, but he’s busier than ever. Over the last decade, Shore has produced a hilarious, self-flagellating mockumentary, Pauly Shore is Dead, as well as multiple comedies and specials, including Natural Born Komics, Adopted, Vegas is My Oyster and Pauly-tics. In addition, he continues to take his show on the road, performing stand-up all over the country in cities and towns that most comics bypass. Soon, he’ll release a gripping documentary, Pauly Shore Stands Alone, and a podcast series, Pauly Shore’s Interested. Somehow, he’ll find time to bring his act to Boogie Nights on August 2nd.

Shore kindly spoke with News4U about past, present and future projects. News4U (N4U): You’re doing all this great work but not a lot of people seem to know about it. Pauly Shore (PS): Most people that aren’t in films and TV think that I must be on drugs or fell off the wagon – that’s what Pauly Shore is Dead was about. I basically made a make-believe story about what I think people wanted to happen to me. I was smart and saved a lot of money from when I was popular and every year or two, I put out my own projects. Yes, they’re small – they’re not in big theaters and most of my fans don’t see them. But for me, I just have to keep plugging away.

N4U: I imagine that being in charge is a nice change from your Hollywood days. PS: You can’t control the outcome of what you do, but you can control what you do. So when I do these projects, I can’t control if they’re going to be successful or not, but I control what the content is. Because of my fan base, I’m able to do these projects – so my fans are really the producers. If I wasn’t making money on the road, I wouldn’t be able to stick that money into new projects. It’s very reciprocal.

N4U: Would you consider taking on a dramatic movie role at some point? PS: If it’s the right situation and the right director and producer, and it’s someone I can trust, then yes. I mean, if it’s some wacko who’s got some drama that he wants to film in a backyard, then I wouldn’t. But my new documentary coming out this year, Pauly Shore Stands Alone, is pretty real and dramatic. It’s actually the first thing that I’ve done where I haven’t done any shtick – there’s no winking at the camera. It’s about me being on a Midwestern tour making ends meet, playing smaller venues in small towns. I’m dealing with moving my mom out of her house of 40 years back in LA – being by myself and talking about relationships. I’m also meeting with my agents soon to discuss putting together a sort of one-manshow of my life – my version of the Mike Tyson Broadway show. That’s probably something we’ll do next year.

Boogie Nights is located at 701A NW Riverside Dr, (812) 401-0460. For more information, visit boogienightsusa.com/Evansville or find them on Facebook.

Tiffany The former teen queen of 80s pop, Tiffany has matured into a dynamic singer-songwriter with a powerful voice capable of handling everything from dance music to country ballads.

F

rom the monumental success of her 1987 debut album and number one smash, “I Think We’re Alone Now,” to being shunned by the music industry, Tiffany has truly seen it all. Still, she keeps moving forward, even venturing into film and television while continuing to release critically acclaimed albums like 2000’s The Color of Silence and her latest release, the country-themed Rose Tattoo. Tiffany’s performance at the grand opening of Boogie Nights last October brought the house down, and she’ll make a triumphant return to the stage on July 26.

She kindly spoke with News4U about the evolution of her career and what to expect from her encore appearance. News4U (N4U): What made the Boogie Nights grand opening so special for you? Tiffany (T): There’s always a lot of energy at Boogie Nights, so it’s easy as a performer. I just love hanging out after the show and checking out the girls on the roller skates [laughs] and talking with fans. I’m obviously all about the 80s – there’s just something about that music that makes you feel good. I don’t think there’s any other era that has such great pop songs or made such an impact on fashion.

N4U: After such huge success with your debut album, it’s been an uphill battle for you to get noticed by the music industry. Does that drive you crazy? T: It drives you nuts, because you’re eager to show your new music. But when I release albums, I’m not expecting them to be on the radio – I haven’t even really approached labels for many, many years. So, I just do things directly from my studio to the fans’ hands. But of course you want to get out in the media and talk about it and hope that when you do press about it that people will be interested to hear it, especially if it’s good. N4U: You’ve been keeping quite busy outside of music. T: I just did Rachel Ray vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off – I’ve done posting for the Food Network, made sci-fi movies. It’s all about building that brand. It’s a great time in the entertainment industry in that you can really flip-flop and do different things. I love music – it’s my first passion – but I love to cook and show all these different sides of myself. I’m always up for a challenge and ready to learn something. N4U: And speaking of your first passion, are you working on a new album? T: I’m working on a ballads album, actually. It’s something that I’ve wanted to do – write beautiful ballads along the lines

of “Could’ve Been” (#1 hit from 1987). That’s such a great song, so it’s a tall order, but I’m a big fan of songs that show I can sing. I’m starting to tour again overseas – those are bigger shows and they love ballads. It’s a market that holds that stuff near and dear. N4U: Will you change your set much from last October’s Boogie Nights performance? T: I always do the hits, of course, but I’ll change things around a little bit. No matter what, even if I’m singing the same songs, I try to come out and pretend that it’s the first time. I try to keep the energy – that’s the most important thing. And again, that’s what’s so great about Boogie Nights – you walk out and the energy is magical. It takes on its own life, and we just take it from there and have a great time.

at the Ford Center by Thomas Ellis

It’s a first for the Ford Center. Rise Up and Run and Venuworks of Evansville have teamed up to present the inaugural Arena Challenge, a unique test of strength and endurance.

T

he three mile adventure run features an array of obstacles scattered around the stadium – walls, tire pits, cargo nets, over and unders, a car and a van (yes, a car and a van) are just some of them. But no obstacle will sap your strength quite like the Ford Center stairs, over 1000 all together. Still, despite the apparent difficulty of the course, Arena Challenge creators Jim Bush (Rise Up and Run) and Scott Schoenike (VenuWorks of Evansville) stress that it’s all kinds of fun. The two worked out the specifics after being inspired by other such events. ”I had heard about different venues doing mud and adventure runs, and the thought of doing something like that in the Ford Center sounded like a fun idea,” Bush says. Of course, it had to make sense financially for the stadium, but the positive impact on the community was a no-brainer. “Right away, I thought this would be a great event to show the versatility of the building, as well as help

with one of Mayor Winnecke’s goals for a fitter Evansville,” Schoenike says. And speaking of getting in shape, Arena Challenge also features several fitness stations to keep your heart rate up during the race: Burpees, Push Ups, Ball Slams and one mystery station to keep you guessing. Between the obstacles and the fitness stations, the event is a serious workout but ultimately, it’s forgiving. “It’s really meant for all ages and all levels of competitors as participants can choose whether to go over obstacles or go around,” Bush explains. “Participants can take it easy on the three mile run and choose what obstacles they do, while more serious competitors can push hard through the run and all of the obstacles. It’s up to the participant how hard they want to push.” In terms of entertainment, there will be a beer garden available as well as a few booths run by local businesses, but the focus this year is the run itself. “We

are going to concentrate on the route, obstacles and having fun,” Schoenike says. “Growing the event next year, we will be looking to add more aspects depending on the ideas we get from participants this year to make the 2015 Arena Challenge even better.” The goal is to sign up 500 participants for the inaugural event and then double that number next year with the help of some good word of mouth. “I would love this event to become an annual event for the Ford Center,” Schoenike says. “It will be a fun event that helps people get fit and maybe bring some people to the building that might not normally visit us.” No doubt with all the panting, sweating and occasional bouts of crying that go into an event like this, participants will expect some sort of recognition of their achievement. So rest assured that a finisher’s medal and a very cool race shirt await you at the end.

Arena Challenge is scheduled for July 12 at 11 a.m. Doors open at 9 a.m. Registration is $35.Visit the arenachallenge.com to register.

by Jaimie Humbert

Tune your spokes and lace your running shoes. Bicycles spin into Evansville July 19-20 for the second annual Run & Ride Weekend featuring The Burning Quad Criterium Race presented by Dan’s Comp.

M

ore than 300 riders are expected to pedal for $5,000 in total prizes. A criterium is a relatively short, closed circuit bicycle race, and the compact course creates a spectator-friendly exhibition. The weekend includes food vendors, a foot relay and a free public bike ride. Proceeds benefit the Vanderburgh County CASA, which provides Court Appointed Special Advocates for children.

“Everyone’s a kid on a bicycle,” says Race Director Chris Hubbard. “Running has a bad reputation” due to most people’s gym class memories, “but everyone likes to ride a bike.” Spectators can experience the thrill of street racing on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as amateur elite riders speed by in excess of 30 mph. “This is a production, an event to come out and see,” claims Hubbard. “Anyone can come down and do it. It’s free.” His tip for first-time spectators is that there is no “bad spot” to watch the races. Most people enjoy seeing the start/finish line at the end, but riders take the one mile loop multiple times. One of the most unique portions of the race is the slope of the boat ramp along the Ohio River. Most cities are flat, so Hubbard believes that Evansville offers “the hardest course in the Midwest.” Another curiosity is the stretch down Main Street, including a rumble over the brick intersections. Hubbard likens the brick pavement to Europe’s

cobblestone streets, a classic surface for cycling, something the riders appreciate. Non-profit food vendors will line Riverside Drive to indulge Evansville’s love affair with festival food. “It’s all about getting people down here,” says Hubbard. “You can’t ask for a better backdrop.” Another advantage of The Burning Quad is the constant intensity of competition. Unlike NASCAR with hundreds of laps and a climax consisting of “wake me up in three hours” to see the finish, The Burning Quad is “more action packed,” according to Hubbard, because of the races within the races. Primes are sprints within a race with separate prizes. Close to the final lap, for instance, a “gambler’s lap,” with a cash reward for that circuit’s winner, revs up the competition. Expect to see the top contenders belonging to a team with matching uniforms. Team strategy involves hurting the competition with sacrificial lambs who ride hard in the early going. Perhaps

the most anticipated division, where bystanders will see the most tactics, is the Men’s 1/2/3 beginning Sunday at 2:35 p.m. On Saturday from 2-5 p.m., when the roads will be closed in anticipation of The Burning Quad, Dan’s Comp offers a free public bike ride on the official course. Following the family-friendly ride is the Mid-Summer Relay Marathon for teams of four, starting at 7 p.m. Hubbard notes that the compact course makes it easier for families to cheer on their runners since they pass by more often, and teammates mingle more during a relay. The event sponsor, Dan’s Comp, “is the reason we’re able to do this race. They see the benefits of having an active community,” says Hubbard. But volunteers are still needed for Run & Ride Weekend, and anyone interested should visit 40lbsledgehammer.com or show up on race day at the registration tent.

Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriters Festival 2014 An Interview with Songwriter

:

Larry Cordle

A

by Nick Durcholz

Beginning July 30th, downtown Henderson will once again play host to the largest collection of creative minds the tri-state area has ever seen.

long with hometown hero Kerry Kurt Phillips, this year’s lineup includes Jerry Salley, Roger Cook, Carl Jackson and so many more. The festival is a very intimate outpouring of hearts where some of the best songwriters around today perform their songs, answer audience questions and tell the stories behind the notes. All in remembrance of former Henderson County Judge/Executive Sandy Lee Watkins and serving as a fundraiser for RiverBend Academy School of Visual & Performing Arts. The three venues chosen to host the festival this year are Rookie’s Restaurant & Sport’s Bar, Delizio Gourmet Italian Eatery and Delker’s. The first session of the night begins at 6:45 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. The second session of the night begins at 9 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m.

Hailing from eastern Kentucky, a Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriters Festival featured songwriter and bluegrass legend, Larry Cordle, graciously gave News4U a moment of his time. News4U (N4U): How important are your own personal memories and experiences to your songwriting? Larry Cordle (LC): They’re hugely important. Of course, not every single thing can be about something you have experienced personally. But my favorite things are. Either that or something I’m really close to that maybe I just know might have happened to me or something - might have been somebody else… I draw on that. I draw on my Appalachian upbringing a lot.

N4U: Describe the feeling you had when you first heard that your childhood friend and neighbor Ricky Skaggs wanted to record your song “Highway 40 Blues”? LC: Oh man, I was over the moon! I didn’t exactly know what it meant; I just knew it had to be better than what I was doing. Ricky was going to be a big star. Everybody that knew him pretty much knew that, because he was a prodigy when we were kids. He really worked at it and it was just his time. He was just poised for it. He was a brilliant musician but he really worked on his vocals and stuff... He was actually doing a real record on me - was producing a little record on me - and that song was in the bunch. He called me one night, he said, ‘Ya know, if I ever get a big deal I’m gonna record some of these songs.’ It seemed pretty far fetched to me at the time too, but I knew he had the ability. So, two or three years later, he called me and said, ‘Hey, I got this deal and I’m gonna record these songs.’ So, it worked out for me. I’m quite convinced I would not have been in the music business without Ricky. Once he recorded that song it was such a big thing. It opened up things I could not have opened up myself. N4U: And the rest is history… LC: Well, I think God intended me to do this somewhat - I don’t

know why – I just think he did. I believe in all that stuff. I just do. And I don’t take one minute of one day of it for granted. I’m blessed beyond words really, that I’ve got to work in something I love this well… And I have no plans to ever quit until they plant me.

If you are a barbeque lover this is definitely the sandwich for you! At first it appears to be your standard pulled pork sandwich, but inside it is so much more. The pork is tender, smoky, rich and flavorful. The sauce adds another dimension of flavor with its initial sweet and tangy taste and ends with a spicy kick, providing just the right amount of heat for the consumer’s edible pleasure. The lettuce, pickle and onion provide a nice crunch, in contrast with the tenderness of the meat. KC’s Pulled Pork Sandwich is served with fries and a side which compliment the entrée nicely. Sweet and spicy pork lovers are going to go crazy for Backstage Bar and Grill’s Pulled Pork Dip and Pulled Pork Flatbread. The sauce stands out the most with a sweet, slightly spicy flavor. Whereas most BBQ is cooked in a smoker, Backstage cooks its pork in the oven for eight to nine hours. The meat is so tender afterwards that is can be sliced with a spoon. The dry rub, used on the meat to add another layer of flavor, has a slight spice as well, though the meat by itself completely holds its own fantastic flavor. The dip is made up of BBQ, mozzarella and cream cheese, great to snack on watching the game! Backstage Bar and Grill has also served pork tacos, which were popular with guests as well. While you are enjoying the quality entertainment and drinks at Backstage, make it a point to try this unique use of BBQ!

One of the east side’s culinary mainstays is back to show once again that they can do a whole lot more than serve a mean steak and offer a fresh and tasty salad bar. In May, they wowed us with their Bacon & Blues Burger. This month, they are bringing their St. Louis Style Loin Ribs to the checkered barbeque table. As we have come to expect from Western Ribeye & Ribs, they were fantastic… It is in their name after all. The flavor was a wonderful marriage of sweet and smoky over a general luxuriously savory tone. Both topical flavors just enough to tease and please the palate without being overpowering. The texture was silky smooth and for ribs, they weren’t all that messy. The meat was not quite fall-off-the-bone tender, but it was close. It was very moist as well, but the star of the show here was Western Ribeye & Ribs’ Signature Honey BBQ Glaze. It brings a light sweetness and makes these ribs hard to put down.

Hawg ‘N’ Sauce Barbeque & Grill 6580 Leonard Rd. Mt Vernon, IN 47620 (812) 838-5339 Hawgnsauce.com or find them on Facebook The Review: Most Flavorful Rib Bark

Ribs, ribs and more ribs! That is basically the portion served up at the Mt. Vernon hot spot. Before you ever hit the door, you’re greeted with the succulent, sweet smell of burning fruit woods and hickory. The trophies in the dining room should be proof enough that this family is not only helping the community, but serving them up some awesome Q. But I say, prove it! Hawg ‘N’ Sauce says, “No Problem.” The baby backs came out in full slab form, with some amazing BBQ baked beans (house made of course) and some fresh, fried potato chips. The bark on these ribs is enough to wake the neighbors, due to the dry rub and the 4 hour smoke. Under this coating of goodness are beautifully pink, tender, smoky morsels of pig. Absolutely wonderful! BBQ, while simple in its preparation, demands perfection, and these guys got it right. The proof is in the pig!

The Bar-B-Q Barn is a real dream-come-true. Literally, this is a locallyowned family business that was built on a dream to serve fantastic ‘Real Pit Barbeque’ to Evansville and the tri-state. It is abundantly clear that these folks have a burning passion for Q. So, it is no surprise that when we tasted their Chicken Baked Potato and Sampler Platter we were absolutely blown away. The pulled chicken on the potato was very tasty and the pulled pork from the Sampler Platter was some of the best we have ever had, both in large portions. The meat boasted two types of sauce: sweet ’n’ tangy and a vinegar. There are more choices of homemade sauces at the table to please your particular palate. All of the meat was tender and smoked to perfection slow-cooked over sweet hardwood in their 100% wood fire pit! The Bar-B-Q Barn also offers a very extensive including homemade sides, salads and other baked potatoes, as well as catering and fundraisers.

Thomason’s Barbeque 701 Atkinson St. Henderson, KY 42420 (270) 826-0654 Find them on Facebook The Review: Best Spicy Dip Sauce

For 54 years, Thomason’s has been providing Henderson, Ky. and the tri-state with very friendly service and barbeque bliss. Thomason’s Barbeque is smoked the old-fashioned way in a masonry pit daily using hickory wood. What we discovered tackling Thomason’s Sampler Platter with pork, mutton and pork rib did not surprise us… They are well worth the trip across the bridge! All three-fourths of a pound of meat was very tender, especially the pork rib which fell off the bone. The meat had a great smoky flavor, but it was the Vinegar-based dip sauce that stood out in the flavor game. It is a thin sauce worlds away from the typical sweet Ketchup base, but it packs an unexpected - though moderate - spicy punch. It permeated the meat and we loved it! As far as sides go, Thomason’s knocked our socks off with their Barbeque Beans as well. They also offer American Potato Salad and Cole Slaw. Make it to Thomason’s Barbeque before 6 p.m. with cash or a check in hand and you will not be disappointed!

A fan of sweet barbeque? Then you need to cross the state line once again to try the Sampler Plate at J&B Barbecue & Catering. It’s ¾ lb. of pork and chicken in a sweet homemade barbeque sauce. The pulled pork is very tender and the chicken is cooked over an open pit. What stood out the most about their Sampler Plate was the sweet sauce used. Out of the three meats on the plate it was the smoky ribs that really held our attention. J&B’s is the home of the open pit chicken and also features homemade sides, such as slaw, potato salad and BBQ beans, which are all very tasty. All of the portions are extremely generous. If you need an event catered, J&B’s has you covered! The menu is wide open. Just give them a call. J&B Barbecue and Catering’s owners were named the 2010 Small-Business Persons of the Year by the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, within their category. J&B Barbeque & Catering provides a non-smoking environment.

The Korner Inn

Every other week, on Fridays only, take a pleasant 20 minute drive to the The Korner Inn in Elberfeld, Ind. for some fantastic barbecue! On this short trip from Evansville, we had the opportunity to try the Korner Inn’s Pork Steak and Pulled Pork Tacos. The Pork Steak was the most tender we have ever encountered. You could actually cut right into it with only a fork! As great as the Pork Steak was though, the Pulled Pork Tacos certainly shined bright! The pork had a great smokiness to it, and the sweet taste of the creamy coleslaw (also in the taco) mingled with it perfectly. It is no secret when dealing with food in general, small, hometown eats are most always quality. What is a secret - is the Korner Inn’s BBQ sauce. It holds an amazing sweetness without over-powering the palate. The Korner Inn also features a full bar, family room and live music on Saturdays. They don’t always serve barbeque. But when they do, they serve it right! Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • July 2014

Hagedorn’s Tavern

2037 W. Franklin St. Evansville, IN 47712 (812) 423-0794 The Review: Most Smoky Dip Sauce

Way before the people who are involved in the revitalization of Franklin Street were even a twinkle in their parents’ eyes, there was the gablefront home and business of Phillip Mundo. The building has called Franklin Street home for 131 years (89 as Hagedorn’s) and they have served up everything from hearty eats to frozen treats, warm beds to cold drinks. Currently, they offer plate lunches, a full bar, breakfast (starts at 6 a.m.), a family room, a Monday burger special and some mean barbeque. But most importantly, you won’t leave hungry! Hagedorn’s barbeque offering was their Pulled Pork & Brisket Platter with German Potato Salad & Creamy Slaw. The brisket is smoked for 10 hours and its tenderness really shows it. The pork was very tender as well. The dip sauce was extremely flavorful boasting a sultry mix of smoky and spicy. It really was the flavor fave of the dish providing an attention-grabbing kick to the palate. If you miss the taste of the Dogtown Restaurant, you will find it here.

Charlie’s Mongolian Barbeque 315 E. Diamond Ave. Evansville, IN 47711 (812) 423-9897 Find them on Facebook The Review: Best Build-Your-Own

It goes without saying that Charlie’s Mongolian Barbeque is more than just a restaurant – it’s an adventure. From the spectacle of watching the cooks prepare your food with flair to the infectious personality of Charlie himself, there’s never a dull moment. The entertainment value alone is worth the trip, but the dishes are the real stars of the show. We were treated to Charlie’s Mongolian Stir Fry Plate which, for the uninitiated, is all about choice. You create your own meal, choosing from a seemingly endless selection of the freshest meats, chicken, seafood, vegetables, noodles and a slew of sauces (from the mild to “cry like a baby” heat ). Once you’ve piled your plate high with healthy items (no MSG!), you pass it off to the professionals, sit back and watch them cook it on an open grill. It’s quintessential Mongolian BBQ that makes your heart healthy and stomach happy.

Texas Roadhouse

7900 Eagle Crest Blvd. Evansville, IN 47715 (812) 477-7427 Texasroadhouse.com Find them on Facebook The Review: Most Tender

Here’s an interesting fact: Texas Roadhouse originated in Indiana. Maybe you already knew that, but it’s good to remind people that this state is the birthplace of some legendary chains. Texas Roadhouse hit the ground running in the early 90s with a commitment to serving grade A, hand-cut steaks and took off from there. 20 years later, it’s still the place to go for the highest quality food, especially their hand-pulled pork which is tossed in TR’s signature BBQ sauce and slow cooked to perfection. It’s incredibly tender with just the right mix of sweet and smoky flavors. You can order it as a dinner portion or as a sandwich – OR go for the Texas Size Combo (with either grilled BBQ chicken, BBQ roasted half chicken and pulled pork and ribs). Another interesting fact: TR does not skimp on portions. So come in hungry and ready to eat – and be sure to try TR’s award-winning, slow cooked, fall-off-the-bone ribs.

Peak Bros. BBQ

6353 U.S. 60 Waverly, KY 42462 (270) 389-0267 Find them on Facebook The Review: Best Traditional Mutton

Established on the fourth of July in 1948 by Barker & Buddy Peak is Waverly, Kentucky’s finest: Peak Bros. BBQ. A short distance southwest of Henderson, Peak Bros. showed us they are both unique and that their barbecue in general can - without a doubt - stand up to the best. Western Kentucky is special in the nation’s barbecue game for their common use of mutton. So, it only makes sense that they would bring their mutton to the checkered table for us. Peak Bros. mutton is dark and rich in texture, almost along the lines of beef, but with a slight gaminess. The thin, vinegar-based dip sauce complemented the meat well providing a bold tangy and savory flavor. Peak Bros. BBQ is a familyfriendly restaurant that also offers whole smoked hams. The Peak Bros. have you covered for catering as well, but if you are a fan of western Kentucky style authentic mutton, than this is the place for you! Nisbet Inn

6701 Nisbet Rd. Haubstadt, IN 47639 (812) 963-9305 Nisbetinn.wix.com/nisbetinn The Review: Best Cajun-Inspired Presentation

Nisbet Inn has been in Northern Vanderburgh County for generations. The historic building was built in 1912 to serve as an oasis for the rail traveler. First came the gumbo - which is Rib Meat Gumbo - I could write the article on this alone. Chicken gumbo; take your seat in the back please. The ribs though, the ribs take you to a big city, Carolina smoke house. A large, meaty half-slab greeted me with a peppery, slightly spicy, yet sweet bark, full of black pepper. The meat is pink straight down to the bone. It is full of sweet wood smoke and tender enough for a baby. The sauce is more acidic than sweet, very much a vinegar-based sauce, which is right up my alley. Tasty sides sure, but I couldn’t seem to tear myself away from the meaty bones. Nisbet is certainly off the beaten path, but after one try, I’m guessing you’ll wear out that said path!

NW Chophouse & Wine Bar 7799 Indiana 66 Newburgh, IN 47630 (812) 853-9500 Nwchophouse.com or find them on Facebook The Review: Best Beef Ribs

NW Chophouse in Newburgh, Ind. is a fairly new spot to go to enjoy great cuts of house-carved beef, chops and delicious pastas. But we’re talking about barbeque, more specifically about barbeque ribs. We’re talking meaty, smoky, fall-off-the-bone, slightly-sauced and wonderfully charred ribs. Ribs that are slightly sweet, packed with meat and a little Asian flair kinda ribs. Yep, we’re talking about NW Chophouse’s BBQ Curry Beef Short Ribs, that’s right beef, not pork. These beef short ribs are slow-cooked for around five hours making a fork or knife completely unnecessary. Before service, they go back to a hot grill, to add a nice char and smoke flavor. If you’re a BBQ person, or just a person who enjoys a really tasty meal, NW Chophouse & Wine Bar should be a must on your list. This pilot - turned restaurateur - has landed in Newburgh, with an upscale menu, in a relaxed and modern dining environment.

cooking Spotlight Barbeque 101 with Robert “"Bob" ”Morphew of

Sir Dax Longfellow Barbeque Co.

S

ir Dax Longfellow Barbecue Company owner Robert Morphew has three unique sauces: Original, Thick’n’Sticky and Carolina Mustard.

Morphew’s Original sauce is a thin, vinegar-based sauce in the style of a North Carolina Rib Dip. It is full of flavor and has the perfect balance of sweet, heat and bitterness to make it a perfect complement to almost any recipe. His Thick’n’Sticky was created as a finishing sauce to be used in competition where the judges crave the shiny finish with a sweet base. Morphew claims that he’s added just the right amount of heat and tanginess for that sauce. For his Carolina Mustard sauce, Morphew adds just the right bitterness from mustard and apple cider vinegar. It’s perfect for smoked sausage, chicken and pulled pork. He describes it as his version of a South Carolina mustard BBQ sauce. Currently, their Original sauce is the only one being bottled, and it is available at Old Fashioned Butcher Shoppe. The others are coming soon. Morphew shares, “A great sauce first starts with your own personal taste preferences, but usually will include (in one ratio or another) Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, tomato (ketchup, paste, sauce), sugar (honey, white, brown or molasses) and then your spices. I started creating my original with the concept of balance. Equal portions of Vinegar, Worcestershire Sauce, Ketchup, Honey and when it came time to thin it down, instead of using water I added Apple Juice, for the sweetness and added flavor.” Morphew advises matching sweet with tangy when matching sauces with meats. “I like the rule that says, ‘if it tastes good, then it’s good.’ The only exception I have to that is with beef brisket. Brisket is not intended to be matched with a sweet sauce. If you need sauce for brisket, I suggest using our Original,” he says. So, what does a dry rub do? According to Morphew, “Dry rubs add a layer of flavor. The sauce will add another layer, making your BBQ more complex and the flavor profile deeper and richer. A dry rub will mix with the juices from the meat while it smokes - creating the bark - the best part of any ‘que.”

He continues, “Sauce should be used as an enhancer, not to drown the meat. Chicken and pork are perfect for sauce, to help enhance their subtle flavor. They are almost a blank pallet that takes on any flavor profile you give them.” According to Morphew, “Barbecue is an art form - with an infinite number of designs, flavors and techniques. Keep it simple and don’t over-think it. Once you’ve mastered the technique of turning a tough piece of meat into a tender delicacy, then start to play around with different spices and sauces adjusting your cooking technique to deliver a different end result. Low and slow, light smoke. These are keys to great barbecue.” As for tips for enjoying your family barbeque time, Morphew says, “Have fun. Invite family and friends over, try new recipes and then tweak them to match your personal taste buds. Start with a basic barbecue sauce from the grocery and ‘doctor it up’ to create a new flavor. My first sauce I ever made was half store brand sauce and half applesauce. Fire up that smoker and create a work of art.” —Nikki Davis Find Sir Dax Longfellow Barbeque Company on Facebook.

marriage of sweet and savory flavors without any heaviness. Lots of crunch and very bright! Then, I picked up the Ground Chicken Pesto taco with ground chicken, pesto, spinach, feta cheese and avocado crème. Way more freshness than anyone expected! The chicken was tender and surrounded by earthy, sour and zesty flavors. It is a great choice for those who love garden freshness; not-so-great for those who don’t care for pesto. The last taco of note was my personal favorite: the Pow Pow Shrimp taco. One of two seafood options with breaded shrimp, pow pow sauce, green onions and shredded cabbage. It is savory and crunchy with a kick! And last, but the opposite of least, comes the Bazooka Guacamole. This is not only the best guac dip in the tri-state; it is the best chip dip of any kind in the tristate. The Bazooka Guacamole is a unique blend of bright and creamy guac teamed with savory, sour goat cheese assaulting the taste bubs with a beautiful, explosive funk. One bite and you won’t be able to lay off this stuff! Another unique side of City Taco is its adult beverages. The geographically diverse wine list includes Prisoner Red Zin, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne, Silver Oak & Clos Du Val Cabarnet and many more. For the oat soda lovers out there, they have over 80 bottled craft, domestic, imported and Mexican beers as well as seasonal rotating drafts. All of these fantastic beverages are available for carry-out. City Taco is yet another beacon brightening the future of dining in the tristate. Come on in and be a part of it!

T

he culinary dream duo of Chef Jayson Munoz and Dr. Mark Logan has really outdone itself this time. Both men have been instrumental in churning up rogue waves of creativity and quality that continue influencing the course of the vessel that is the tri-state’s food scene, pushing it into more diverse waters and testing its steel. It seems that this, their most recent venture, just might be their magnum opus. So, without further adieu, from the minds (and pockets) that brought you Kanpai Sushi & Asian Bistro and CKB (Commonwealth Kitchen + Bar) comes City Taco. Prior to experiencing the food, there are several things that are immediately striking about this restaurant revealing a strong personality. The first is that a large section of the front of the restaurant is carved out to accommodate a contemporary, but warm internal patio with small tables and couches. This curious and cool area would be ideal for an intimate dinner at dusk (with a bottle of wine from City Taco’s small but superb wine list). Secondly, the utilization of art in City Taco is intriguing and eclectic but also colorful and light, inspiring a contagiously fun atmosphere. The art teamed with the quaint mishmash of furniture, flat-screen TV’s and vibrant music make City Taco a potpourri of pop culture. Frankly, I was tempted multiple times to start a dance party in the middle of the meal without having had any alcohol to drink. Speaking of beverages, did I mention they carry Mexican bottles (containing cane sugar) of Fanta Orange, Sprite, Pineapple and CocaCola? First out were the BBQ Nachos. Crispy, carnivalinspired chips topped with house queso, pulled pork, slaw, corn and avocado salsa and barbecue sauce. It is a very colorful dish boasting as many flavors and textures as it does hues. The savory and slightly sweet pork is punctuated by small chunks of avocado adorned with sweet slaw. Texture abounds in this starter with the silky queso, tender pork, crisp chips and crunchy slaw. It is an amazing way to jump-start the palate. Texture and flavor overload! Next up was a taco spree. I began with the Hawaiian Taco. Sporting pulled pork, grilled pineapple and cilantro, this taco is the perfect example of a

A

manda Hancock of Vecchio’s Italian Market and Delicatessen has a bachelors in Human Services from Murray State University and studied Culinary Arts at Ivy Tech.

She became involved with the business when she interned there in culinary school, and she has worked there since it opened. She is now the owner/chef. “I loved the laid back atmosphere that Frank (the previous owner) had created. There’s no menu. It rotates daily and everything is made fresh each day,” shares Hancock. She goes on to explain that she enjoys what she does because it’s not a traditional restaurant. There are some staples that they have each day (pizzas and strombolis), but not having a set menu allows them the flexibility to innovate and be creative. In fact, Vecchio’s caters directly to the customer’s appetite in most cases.

of

Vecchio’s Italian Market & Delicatessen

She also loves the atmosphere of downtown Historic Newburgh. “[It is] so quaint and easy to spend a day walking through all of the cute boutiques. It’s a supportive community to own a business in,” says Hancock. Hancock’s favorite dish on the menu is a sandwich named after her mom: The Momma D. Hancock explains, “It’s my mom’s recipe for Italian beef, and we serve it with pepperoncini.” In terms of a favorite dish to cook though, she finds it hard to narrow down to just one. “I really enjoy catering and doing private parties and classes. It’s fun to work with the customer to make their event perfect.” For the lunch crowd, she recommends their stromboli. “It’s our pizza dough that we stuff with mozzarella, pepperoni, sweet Italian sausage and our homemade sauce. We bake it all together,” explains Hancock. Vecchio’s is so much more than a lunch stop. On Friday and Saturday evenings they offer St. Louis style pizzas, small plates and appetizers. Again, they are constantly changing and morphing. That same constant changing and evolving is the thing that sets them apart from other businesses in Newburgh. Additionally, they carry domestic and imported goods, homemade pastries (they have a pastry chef) and a unique beer and wine selection. Their De Cecco and Divella pastas are imported from Italy as well as their Cucina Viva handmade dry pastas. They also carry San Marzano tomatoes described as the ‘sweetest, most flavorful tomatoes in Italy.’ They also offer a variety of imported and domestic olive oils, which pair well with their variety of vinegar. They even have tinned seafood from Italy! For those with a sweet tooth, Vecchio’s has your craving quelled with Perugina and Lindt chocolate bars. Then, after you have shopped their shelves, you can swing over to their deli case where you will find Boar’s Head meats and cheeses including Mortadella, Genoa, capicola and parmesan-pesto ham. They also carry Volpi and Molinari salamis as well as Prosciutto di Parma. For the cheese lover, their Boar’s Head selection includes Smoked Gruyere and Gouda, horseradish cheddar, dill Havarti, jalapeño Havarti and their Italian cheeses including Taleggio, Parmesano di Reggiano and Locatelli. While you are there, you can purchase your meats and cheeses by the pound, or they can serve them right up to you on their freshlybaked focaccia!

Evansville’s Magic Wand by Casey Williams, Executive Director of Smokefree Communities

O

ver the last few years, Evansville has gone to great efforts to improve the health of the community. Whether it’s the initiatives the Mayor’s office has implemented like Energize Evansville, or the growing trend of farmers markets popping up throughout the city. The end goal of these efforts is to improve the quality of life of people living in Evansville and to reduce the high rates of preventable disease that are unfortunately prevalent in our community. Imagine if we could wave a magic wand that could drop heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory illnesses by 20%. After crunching the numbers from a local hospital’s data on their admission rates for these illnesses, a 20% reduction would lead to around a savings of 7.2 million dollars per year, and that’s just one hospital! Well, luckily this magic wand does exist: a comprehensive smokefree air ordinance. Researchers first became aware of this staggering effect in the early 2000’s in Helena, MT. The city of Helena provided an excellent case study to research the immediate health affects enacting a smokefree air ordinance can have. What was unique about Helena was that because of their geographically isolated population, there was only one hospital within a 50 mile radius, so it was very easy to have a controlled study. In 2002, when Helena passed a smokefree air ordinance the heart attack admissions to the local hospital dropped by 50%, while the surrounding hospitals that didn’t have a smokefree air law did not see a reduction in heart attacks. In 2003, the ordinance was overturned and heart attack admissions to the local hospital went back up almost to the level of before the ordinance.

Many people did not believe that passing a smokefree air ordinance could have such a drastic immediate effect on public health, but since this study was release in the early 2000’s, 45 similar studies across the nation have been conducted and have shown the same results. We now know that passing a smokefree comprehensive air ordinance reduces coronary events, strokes, and respiratory disease by 15%-20%. So, my question to the Mayor and Evansville’s city council is what other public policy could make this great of impact on improving public health and controlling the cost of health care? With over 1,000 workers in Evansville still working in secondhand smoke and around 100,000 visitors to the casino every month, isn’t it time we put this issue to bed? Why continue to expose workers and patrons to secondhand smoke and resist a policy that can reduce preventable disease and health problems by 15%-20%? I hope I’m not the only one left scratching their head.

To join the fight for bring back a smokefree air ordinance to Evansville, please find Smokefree Evansville on facebook at facebook.com/smokefreeevansville or call 812-303-7378.

T

he 11th annual Brew & Barbecue Fest returns to historic Bosse Field on August 2nd.

Each year, over 1800 attendees enjoy a fun-filled evening of food, drinks and entertainment benefitting SWIRCA & More. Vendors from all over the Midwest come to share their craft and passion for creating outstanding adult beverages – bourbons, whiskeys, vodkas, wines from award-winning wineries, brews and microbrews. And all can be sampled guilt-free as Unity Taxi provides rides home at no cost. So don’t be shy, drink up! In addition to an impressive selection of beverages and appetizers, the Brew & Barbecue Fest also features a great line-up of entertainment. This year, the inimitable Tommy Stilwell is the scheduled headliner supported by local acts Glastone, 2 Miles Back and Keith Vincent. And of course, no SWIRCA benefit is complete without delicious barbecue. While you sample and rock out, you can purchase and enjoy some of the best in town provided by Hickory Pit Stop. For over a decade, the Brew & Barbecue Fest has helped to further the mission of SWIRCA, a wonderful organization that encourages self sufficiency among adults 60 and over as well as disabled youths and adults. The money raised through this annual event positively impacts the community in so many ways. —Thomas Ellis The event runs from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. General admission tickets are $35 pre-event or $40 at the door and include all beverage samples, vendor food samples, a commemorative sampling glass, festival program and live entertainment. VIP tickets are $70 and include all of those perks plus a private sampling hour from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m., premium parking and access to the VIP area. Tickets are available at any Old National Bank, Turoni’s restaurants or Schnucks store. You may also call 464-7800 or visit swirca.org.

“Fly Me to the Moon”

Burlesque & Variety Show at Germania Maennerchor

L

ooking for something unique to do this month? Glitter in the Air Productions and Evansville Germania Maennerchor are presenting “Fly Me to the Moon,” a burlesque and variety show. “This show will feature classic pin-ups, burlesque performers, Sinatra-style singers and showgirls, vaudeville tricks such as the bed of nails routine, belly dancing with sword balancing, hula dancers, hula hoop troupes…,” says Reanna Fuller, Manager and Owner of Glitter in the Air Productions. Fuller is known as Lily St. John when she is performing in productions for Glitter in the Air. “Fly Me to the Moon” includes comedy acts, tributes to people, such as Marilyn Monroe, Gypsy Rose Lee and Sally Rand. Special guests will include: “bellyrific” tribal dancers, Deja Moon, HoopsA-Daisy and Nancy Kramer. In addition to performances, the event will have a paper moon themed photo area and will host a pin-up girl contest. “Fly Me to the Moon” is a benefit for The American Evansville Red Cross Totes of Hope, a program for homeless veterans. “Fly Me to the Moon” will be held at Germania Maennerchor on Fulton Avenue. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show is set to begin at 8 p.m. VIP tickets cost $15 and the cost for general admission tickets is between $10 and $12. The show is for those 21 and older. “We try to set different themes for each show to bring our audience a completely different experience,” says Fuller.

T

he statistics are fairly staggering: 200 half barrels of beer, 50 German and domestic beer taps, 1400 pounds of bratwurst, 1000 pounds of pig knuckles, 950 gallons of German potato salad, 480 gallons of sauerkraut, 15,000 kraut balls and 400 gallons of beans. And of course, the best stat of all: 10,000 people having a blast at Germania Maennerchor Volksfest 53, August 7, 8 and 9. It’s an opportunity to come out and celebrate our German heritage at the biggest and most authentic ethnic festival in the area. While countless hours of labor are required to pull it off, it’s all done on a volunteer basis by locals who keep Volksfest running smooth – not to mention affordable. Volksfest gets rolling at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 7 with a great German lunch, but the main event is scheduled for 6 p.m. when the festival officially opens with the ceremonial tapping of the keg. As the beer flows, several bands will fire up the polka music and set the stage for the preliminary round of the celebrity bratwurst tossing contest at 8 p.m. Tensions will undoubtedly run high. Friday promises to live up to all the TGIF hype with more amazing German food, polka music and the heartstopping finals of the bratwurst tossing contest. Saturday is the Kiddie Carnival which includes a free lunch for the kids, lots of games and a German costume contest. The bands will polka well into the night until the kegs are all tapped out. Remarkably, 2014 marks the 100 year anniversary of Germania Maennerchor’s building. It may be old, but it’s still beautiful, so come out and help this great organization re-dedicate it in style! —Johnny Fletcher Find them on Facebook for more info or call (812)422-1915. ISTY JOC HUM

C

hristy Jochum is a free spirit. Ever since she was a child she knew she wanted to do something creative. Growing up in Loogootee, Ind., she didn’t read a lot and wasn’t into math or other subjects. Jochum had to keep herself entertained, and as a result, she used her imagination a lot. “I enjoyed drawing homes, mainly the facade and decor of them, so I thought one day maybe I’d be an architect,” recounts Jochum. After taking a few drafting classes, she decided they were too technical and that she wanted to do something that allowed her to work a bit more freely. After high school, Jochum moved to Evansville to attend classes at USI and, after a couple semesters, became interested in graphic design. While the subject did contain a few guidelines it provided her with the freedom needed for her to produce her own design work. In addition to graphic design, Jochum still enjoys photography, and even worked with local Glitter in the Air Productions owner Reanna Fuller to create a zombie pin-up calendar in 2012. Many of the models for the calendar were from the local burlesque group. Props for the shoot came from Eville J’s Creepy Closet and a portion of the sales from the calendar, sold online at the annual Night Gallery Art Show and at the Ahh Spa during the month of October, were donated to P.A.A.W.S. animal shelter. A new calendar that is projected to be released in 2015 is in the works now. It will be a monster pin-up calendar. Jochum says creating the calendar is a fun - but expensive - process. She will be shooting many of the same girls for the monster calendar.

Jochum is a completely self-taught photographer and will be working a photo booth for the Glitter in the Air Productions show of “Fly Me to the Moon” in July. She began taking pictures to help out with the shows and credits Glitter in the Air’s owner, Fuller, with keeping her driven. When it comes to getting ideas for her work, Jochum says it’s very random. Sometimes she’ll be talking with friends or watching a movie when ideas will come to her. Other times inspiration will come from exploring the work of famous photographers and designers. Being around like-minded people and attending art shows also gets her creative juices flowing. Music is ever-present when she is working. She even chooses the music based on what she thinks will best fit the project at hand. “When working with any client, I like to perform a ‘background check’ before I meet them…” Jochum says, “I like to know what they are like, personality and style-wise - so I can know what approach will work best with them.” During her college years, Jochum worked for Flowers & More on Franklin Street, and still rents a space from the owner to this day that functions as a studio for her. When she isn’t working, she loves to spending time with her friends, seeing live music, dancing, yoga and spending time with her husband and their two dogs. —Justin Law

soundboard Osiella

F

ew people have the courage and self-belief to drop everything and pursue a dream, but the members of Osiella are committed to making music for a living. Just six short months ago, vocalist Cynthia Murray and guitarist Theophilus Akai were relative strangers. And yet, quite remarkably, they, along with Murray’s husband/ producer, Kenneth, recently quit their jobs to go full-time with Osiella. Percussionist Dene Stephens is self-employed but no doubt would have gladly walked out, too, for the good of the band. It all started with an unexpected meeting last December in a downtown Evansville back alley. “[The Murrays] met me beside Bokeh Lounge – I was going to see a little music festival at the Alhambra,” Akai explains. “They said, ‘you must be Theophilus.’ I was surprised they knew my full name and all about my involvement in the local music scene.” Within days, a writing session was scheduled at Kenneth’s studio which yielded immediate results, including “Negative Feedback,” a track that is currently creating a buzz with several A&R’s. “It was the second song Cynthia and Theo wrote together,” Kenneth says. “It took about 30 minutes and eventually made it to the EP – it’s got a lot of steam behind it.” But as promising as that track may be, it’s the melancholic “Miss You More” that makes you truly appreciate what the band has accomplished in such a brief time together. The combination of Cynthia’s emotive vocals and Akai’s melodic, often complex acoustic guitar picking creates an incredibly rich sound – a sound that

Stephens continues to expand with his evergrowing arsenal of percussion. “We’re trying to create our own genre. We’re calling it ‘acoustic fusion’ because it’s acoustic music but with Theo being from West Ghana (Africa) and Cynthia singing all soulful – all these different elements are in there,” he explains. The other two tracks on the band’s new EP are every bit as primed for radio rotation. “Demons” is a full on countryrock stomper that seemingly jumps out of the speakers while “Never Know” is another example of Cynthia’s uncanny ability to write and perform an amazing vocal hook. “I’ve been singing since I was eight and writing since I was in high school,” she says. “I was in a rock band called Tagari for several years before meeting Theo. So that’s something I have always incorporated into my life.” Of course, writing great songs is often the easy part; recording them is another thing all together. That’s where Kenneth has made all the difference. “I’ve been recording and working in my own studio for 21 years,” he says. “I’ve been a part of a lot of projects, and I was certain this was going to be the one that took us there.” His production expertise has elevated Osiella above the musical fray and helped the band book a 20 city tour that stretches through early August – including a full week in New York. Dubbed the “Our Way Home Tour,” it’s the culmination of six crazy months that none of the members could ever have predicted – but wouldn’t trade for anything. Each one of them is truly grateful for this unexpected opportunity to chase a dream. “I want to say thanks to all of our fans – it feels weird to say ‘fans’ – that have supported us and stayed with us, seeing our journey through this tour,” Cynthia says. “It’s pretty amazing.” —Thomas Ellis

Osiella just released a new version of their EP which includes two extra songs. Visit osiella.com or find them on Facebook for more information.

Here’s a spiced pale wheat ale. The labeling indicates that it’s brewed with coriander and orange peel. It pours hazy-golden and slightly cloudy (unfiltered) with a nice two finger head that settles within a few minutes. Smell is a pleasant bittersweet combination of orange and wheat. The taste is very refreshing wheat with subtle orange elements and a refreshing mild hop and coriander aftertaste. It is pleasantly full-bodied for a wheat beer (which aren’t generally my favorite), but not at all heavy. This is very drinkable ale and would be a great refresher on a hot summer day.

Paul Bragin • 4

No head forms on this unfiltered and unpasteurized wheat beer after pouring it into a wheat beer glass. A combination of wheat and orange peel scents come to the front when smelling the beer. The wheat and orange peel remain when first tasting the beer, with the orange peel becoming more pronounced, followed by hints of coriander after swallowing. Pair with lighter dishes like salads with oranges and nuts. This is a good choice for summer.

Jabez Martinez • 4

This is a hazy, orange-colored beer with good carbonation. It says it is unfiltered and unpasteurized which can be good or bad. I could taste the coriander and the orange peel, but the flavors hit kind of flat on my palate. It was decent, but it seemed a little watery. Follow us on twitter @

This is another spiced wheat ale. A real deviation from the classic “Shiner” bockstyle beer that has made them famous (in Texas at least). It pours an effervescent, light straw color with two fingers of loose bubbly head. The aroma is wheat and yeast with quiet undercurrents of coriander and orange. The taste, unfortunately presents nothing more than the aroma with wheat, yeast, etc. There’s certainly Belgian yeast involved here that appears in the taste. Overall, this one seems a little sweet for my taste and frankly, the more I drink the less I enjoy it. That said, if it suits you, it’s quite drinkable and the low 4.7% ABV makes it session-able.

/theliquorlocker

A thin, white head forms on this unfiltered wheat beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. Even after the head disappears, some lacing remains as the beer moves around the glass. Wheat is the dominant scent, but some spice notes from the coriander are present as well. The wheat flavor also contributes the most to the flavor when drinking the beer, but hints of orange peel also come through, along with coriander in the finish.

Jabez Martinez • 5

I am glad the Shiner put this out. I had just purchased some of this prior to the review and loved it. I would compare it to a Blue Moon, but better. The others being reviewed this month all have a similar style with the orange peel and coriander, but this one took the cake. It isn’t as expensive as others can be, and all the flavors just came together so well. I hope they keep this around, but I am going to stock up on it anyway.

Daniel Knight • 4.5

Here’s an American (Brooklyn, NY) version of a traditional German Pilsner. I have to say here that I’m a big fan of this brewery and typically not a big fan of pilsners and lagers. So, I recruited my German beer-loving friend Jochen to help me with objectivity. It pours a hazy, golden body with a clumpy one finger off-white head. The smell is of fresh cut grass and slightly fruity hops with a sweet, toasted banana bread malt. Very nice. Taste has a nicely balanced (sweet up front) malt body with a subtle and pleasant bitterness at the finish. Admittedly, I enjoyed it and will likely have it again in the future. Jochen judged it to be very good as well. At only 5.4% ABV, this would make a great session beer.

Paul Bragin • 4.5

A quickly disappearing white head tops this golden-colored pilsner. The aroma of citrusy hops fills the nose, but hints of pine also seem to come later. Upon tasting the beer, the balance of malt and hops hits the tongue first. After swallowing, the hop presence returns strongly. This could be a good choice for hopheads and people who are starting to move past pilsners in their beer journey. It could pair well with many foods.

Jabez Martinez • 3.5

This beer is a golden yellow color. I am pretty excited about it. I am a big Six Point fan, but I did not think this offering rose to the level of other Six Point beers. I could taste some of the sweetness from the hops, but other than that, it was just another average lager. This one is sort of middle-of-the-road.

Goose Island Beer Co. The Ogden

Daniel Knight • 3.5

The Ogden is a dry-hopped Belgian-style Tripel (9% ABV). It pours a light, hazy yelloworange with plenty of carbonation, a small head and generous lacing. The nose is fruity, with hints of yeast, florals and hops. The flavor is fruity, with tangerine, apricot, yeasty malt and spicy florals in the finish. The Ogden is a limited release brew. Overall, I judge it to be very good, but not as exceptional as I was expecting. Still, if you enjoy this genre of brew, I recommend that you enjoy one and judge for yourself - as it’s certainly somewhat unique in character.

Paul Bragin • 5

Random Beer Facts!

A white head forms on this deep golden beer when poured in a nonic glass. The scent is marked by a pleasant malt aroma with some fruity notes behind it. The fruity notes continue when drinking the beer, with some hop presence after it. This one is strong with 9% ABV, but this Belgian tripel style beer is a great one to try. It might intimidate novice beer drinkers, but aficionados will want to seek out this one.

1.) Light is what makes Beer go bad.

Jabez Martinez • 5

3.) The oldest known recipe for BEER is over 4,000 years old, made by Sumerians.

This is a clear, amber beer with great tasting Belgian yeast and hops. This beer has a lot of character, and the 9% ABV is a good addition. I could detect some citrus flavors with some spices, but I just have to say that Goose Island out did themselves with this one.

2.) George Washington had his own brewhouse on the grounds of Mount Vernon.

Summer County Nights Series:

Eric Paslay at the Victory by Lanea Stagg, Contributing Writer & Author of the Recipe Records Cookbook Series (www.reciperecordscookbook.com)

An opportunity to see a rising star awaits you at Evansville’s Victory Theatre when 93.5 The Wolf and Kenny Kent Chevrolet present country music talent, Eric Paslay on Saturday, July 12 at 7 p.m.

I

recently asked my 19 year-old son (who has been raised in a stiff and stern rock/blues environment) if he’d heard of Mr. Paslay. His response was “Yeah! Listen to ‘Song About a Girl’... It’s great!” In an unusual twist in my world of music, I took his advice and pulled up Mr. Paslay’s “Song About a Girl.” I was not expecting my teenager to know what he was talking about and was proudly surprised that he was absolutely correct. Paslay’s sound is pure country, magnified by charming lyrics. “Song About a Girl” is for those who don’t really want to think too deeply about the meaning of a song, enabling the lyrics to shine. I couldn’t help but wonder if the “blue suede shoes, coo-coo-ca-choo” line was meant for old rockers like me. Being unable to stop with just one song, I tuned in to several more; each one changing my normal “shun o’ country” grimace to a grin. “If the Fish Don’t Bite” gave me interesting insight on why my son takes his girl to the fishing hole, but somehow never seems to catch anything—from the pond, that is.

Eric Paslay seems to be a musician whose head sits square and confident on his 6’4” frame. He received a bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University where he considered pursuing a career as a pediatric endocrinologist, a result of his personal diabetic struggle and his dream to reach kids with the disease. Like most musicians and artists, the restless desire to unleash the inner muse and musician led him to Nashville and the rest, as they say, is history. Paslay has written hit songs for various Nashville artists and now he’s enjoying success in his own production. Paslay is a perfect candidate for the rising start concert series and if you don’t take the opportunity to see his show, I guarantee you’re gonna kick yourself in the hind-end with those pink or brown dustcovered cowboy boots. Tickets are available now at www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets or the Ford Center Ticket Office.

I

f you’re looking for something to do this summer that’s both creative and goes to helping a good cause, then come to the 15th annual Bowl for the Cure at AMF Arc Lanes on August 1st to really get your summer holiday off to a wonderful start. Since 2000, this event has actually been held at CJ’s Willow Bowling Center, but had to be moved to AMF Arc Lanes since it closed. However, this in no way will affect achieving the same number of attendees from last year - which was close to 100 registered bowlers – hopes are indeed high for doing so! They now have a bigger space for more players to attend. In the past, this event actually went on for three nights but sadly, because of the venue change, they have decided to limit it to just one night this year. Until they get used to their new location. But this does not mean there will be any less time to bowl. Throughout the night there will be exactly three sessions, and each of which will last two hours. The first session starts at 6 p.m., then 7 p.m. and finally, the last one begins at 8 p.m. The fee for adults to participate is $25 each (13 and older) and $15 for children (12 and under). Each team can have five bowlers, so bring a group of friends to maximize the fun. Aside from setting them up and knocking them down, this event offers more than just bowling. This event will be offering door-prizes periodically throughout the night, and is even encouraging their teams to come dressed up in creative costumes. A prize goes to the team with the most unique and creative costume at the end of the night. This year’s theme is all about the 50’s. It even features a cruise-in. The best car of the night will receive a prize! So, if you like bowling or just want to get involved with a great cause, Susan G. Komen’s Bowl for the Cure is the event for you. —Sarah Dyson

LOCAL BAND SPOTLI G HT Wo r l d C l a s s Assassins

ABOUT THE BAND: World Class Assassins is Matt Camp (guitars and lead vocals), Bruce Patten (guitars), Andy Mitchell (drums, percussion), Max Wilkinson (drums, percussion) and Gerard Medicis (bass, backing vocals). The band name just hit me while repairing a guitar one day… weird. Our first jam session was with a little bit of a different lineup, but eventually, the right bunch of guys found their way into the fold. It was crazy having two drummers at first, but it was something we really wanted to try and has grown into something amazing. WHAT THEY COVER/ DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: We will throw a few interesting covers in sets, but they will be at a minimum. As far as style goes, we just follow whatever happens at the moment and let it become what it is supposed to become. I have some super talented guys that bring smoking leads (hear our first song on or Facebook page), pro level bass lines, harmonies and layered guitars. THEIR INFLUENCES: Bob Mould, Joe Bonamassa, Vertical Horizon, Eclipse (UK), Redlight King, Dave Grohl, Jellyfish & Thin Lizzy. Just to name a few… WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES: Our first show is in August. The date, place and time will be announced soon. After our undefeated run on the 103 WGBF Rocktagon. Find us on Facebook @ theworldclassassassins. Bandcamp: worldclassassassins. bandcamp.com. Follow us on Twitter @ Worldclassassassins, and on Instagram @ Worldclassassassin.

cd reviews LIFE

R U D W N? Urbantone Group 3/5 LIFE began life as Tomorrows Bad Seeds, a super-chill, pseudo-reggae outfit from the West coast that made the rounds on the Warped Tour and attracted a decent following of presumably Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz fans. But somewhere along the way, founding members Moi J. Quinn, Sean Chapman and Matthew McEwan started to hear a different, more urgent sound in their heads – a melodic rush of R&B and alt-rock with a hint of ska. Rather than attempt to hi-jack the slow jam style of TBS, they opted instead to make a clean break and form LIFE. Based on the four songs that comprise the group’s first EP, it was a wise decision. Gone is the sleep-inducing pace of TBS; this trio keeps things moving from the first bar to the last. But while Quinn, Chapman and McEwan are off to a good start, they’ll need to develop a more original sound at some point. Influences cited include Sublime, Pennywise and, somewhat incongruously, Bad Brains. However, it’s clear that that LIFE owes the biggest musical debt to Bruno Mars. His blend of energetic pop and soul is all over tracks like “Better Days” and “Kill the Messenger” which lifts the chorus from “Locked Out of Heaven” – and the hook of the verses, too. There’s life in these songs, though; things are looking up.

Kristeen Young The Knife Shift TVPI 4.5/5

Long championed as a major talent by some of music’s biggest names, including former Smiths front man, Morrissey, St. Louis singer-songwriter Kristeen Young is back with The Knife Shift, the seventh – and best – album of her career. Co-produced by the legendary Tony Visconti and featuring none other than Dave Grohl on drums and periodic guitar, it brilliantly showcases Young’s flair for Kate Bush-style melodrama as well as her uniquely aggressive piano playing. Typical Tori Amos comparisons miss the mark completely; Young attacks her instrument with a passionate ferocity that makes “Cornflake Girl” sound borderline adult contemporary. Rather, her musical allegiance is more in line with confrontational artists like Diamanda Galas. “This is War” is the summation of all that is great about Young. She pounds the piano into submission, chopping out a melody that veers discordantly while her insistent, wailing vocals somehow stay within the parameters of the song; it’s equally exhilarating and unnerving. An alternative hit in the making, “The Answer to All Your Problems is in this Little Bottle” is blissful chaos anchored by an infectious chorus that leaves you feeling pleasantly woozy. Put down the pills, The Knife Shift is the real answer to all of your problems.

Bubba Sparxxx

Made on McCosh Mill Rd. eOne Music 3.5/5 Bubba, it’s good to have you back. To be accurate, everyone’s favorite southern rapper returned last year after a lengthy hiatus from the music industry. But while 2013’s Pain Management certainly had its moments and signaled that Bubba had not lost a step, Made on McMosh Mill Rd. is proof that he is all the way back. It’s a cut above PM in most every way and miles ahead of current country rap – a genre that really exploded in Bubba’s absence. That seems to be the way it works; the pioneers get the recognition but little of the money and fame. But perhaps 2014 is the year that Sparxxx gets his due for helping to bring together such seemingly incompatible musical styles. For unimpeachable evidence that Bubba has recaptured his flow, look no further than lead single, “Anything but Run.” Featuring a radio-ready chorus by Danny Boone, Sparxxx tells a nostalgic tale about his childhood and his subsequent rise to the top of the rap game – all with an effortless, rapid-fire delivery. “Heart of Georgia” builds on the front porch, story-telling vibe with a tribute to the Peach State backed by slide guitar and fiddles. Most down home of all, “Way Down South” is a humorous chronicle of things that Bubba grew up without: “No newspaper, we ain’t on the route.”

Solid Gold Balls Self-Titled Killer Deal Records

Are you a fan of Wilco? Possibly the Who? Well, then you may want to have a listen to Solid Gold Balls. Labeled as a family-core, indie punk and hard folk rock band, the group came from Portland, OR and two of the three members have children. The group’s lyrics are clever, especially in the song “Favorite Things.” You’ll find interesting lyrical gems throughout that song, as well as in the rest of the tracks.

Hook & Anchor

Self-Titled Jealous Butcher & Woodphone Records

Another band from Portland, OR, Hook & Anchor is set to release its debut, self-titled album. With 12 tracks and over 40 minutes of play time the lyrics are extremely catchy and the use of various instruments (banjo, ukulele, violin, drums, etc.) make this group an entertaining listen. The band’s sound has inflections of gospel and folk to it, all while causing the listener to want to get up and move. Hook & Anchor’s album will drop July 22.

The Everyday Losers Revel in Chaos Self-Released 4/5

Multiple Artists

It’s quite possible that Washington, Ind. is a hotbed for heavy music, and it’s just not widely reported. But the more likely scenario is that The Everyday Losers are the exception to the rule up there. Either way, the quartet of Dylan and Tyler Seidel, Danny Norton and Damian Baker have created a monster of anguish and distortion with Revel in Chaos, an album that should widen their metal fan base outside of Indiana and beyond. Recorded in New Orleans at Revolver Studio, it reflects a band that has honed its sound over time and performed alongside the likes of Saliva and Puddle of Mudd; the production matches the confidence. From the opening line of “You’ve Got War,” it’s apparent that all is not well in TEL’s camp: “I must admit I never gave a sh*t about you.” What follows is a barrage of power chords and solo shredding that mirrors the direct intent of the lyric. But while the songs on RIC are angry, vocalist Dylan Seidel’s bark is worse than his bite. “Outta My Head,” “Say It” and “Killing Me” are really sing-alongs masquerading as hatemongering. For every wash of feedback and surge of aggression, there’s a major hook just waiting to happen. The Everyday Losers are putting Washington on the map.

Dear Lodge: A Tribute to George Jones Deer Lodge Records

To honor the late George Jonesarecordingcompany based in Portland, OR, Deer Lodge, has put together a two CD collection of 30 tracks sang by various artists under the label. Some of these artists include Portland Country Underground, Hearts of Oak and the Meredith Brothers. The track list includes songs such as: “White Lightening,” “Wings of a Dove,” “Bartender Blues” and many others. The album is out in memory of the oneyear anniversary of Jones’ death and it carries his spirit well.
