t’s fair to say that 2014 was a pretty good year for Miranda Lambert. The former Nashville Star finalist released the highlyacclaimed Platinum – her first album to reach the top of both the country and pop charts – and won big at the year-end CMA Awards, all while laughing off constant divorce rumors and the hounding of the gossip rags. Lambert’s apparent ease with celebrity and success is the mark of someone who has spent more than 10 years in the business and learned how to stay sane in the midst of all the craziness. And while her marriage to country superstar Blake Shelton in 2011 put an even bigger target on her back, Lambert has responded with class and a string of huge hits, including “Over You,” “Mama’s Broken Heart” and “Somethin’ Bad,” a duet with Carrie Underwood. In addition to collaborating with the American Idol winner, Lambert has also embraced new stars like “All About That Bass” singer Meghan Trainor, recently appearing with her at the 2014 CMA Awards. Most notably, she formed Pistol Annies with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley in 2011. The sassy trio has released two well-

received albums, Hell on Heels and Annie Up, and toured together extensively. While not as successful as Lambert’s solo work, the side project has proven that the platinumhaired Texan can branch out and go down different musical avenues. With Platinum, Lambert became the first country artist to reel off five number one albums out of the gate. It’s an incredible achievement, particularly in such a maledominated genre. Equally impressive, Lambert composes a lot of her own material, resisting the industry standard of bringing in teams of writers to craft an entire album that, in reality, has no personal connection to the singer. That extra human touch has helped to keep Lambert at the top for the past decade and resulted in a heap of much deserved recognition and landslide victories at all the major awards shows. But for all her success on the charts, Lambert shines brightest on stage. Her live shows are raucous sing-alongs punctuated by some of the biggest country hits of the last 10 years. Expect wall-to-wall fandemonium when she arrives at the Ford Center on January 15. – TE For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com.

The Ambassadors of Goodwill are back and ready to battle their rejuvenated rivals, the Washington Generals. Incredibly, the 2015 North American “Revenge” tour will see the Globetrotters play 310 games in 250 cities, 49 states and nine Canadian provinces between December 26 and late April. At each game, the team will honor a Hometown Hero – an active, wounded or retired member of the military who has made their community proud. You can go to harlemglobetrotters.com to nominate your personal hero prior to the game. Star Globetrotter Buckets Blakes kindly spoke with News4U before heading out on the big tour. The Generals haven’t beaten you in decades. Why have they returned to challenge you now? Are they sensing a weakness in your current squad? I don’t know what their thought process is. They squeezed out a victory in 1971 – I wasn’t born then, so you’re going to have to talk to Curly (Neal). Maybe they think they’ve found some players that are capable of taking us down, but they should know about the power that we possess. One of your teammates recently made the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest backwards shot. Do you have a trick shot that could get you in it? I’m actually in the 2011 Guinness Book for my half-court underhand shot – five in one minute. I just broke my own record the same day that Thunder (Law) got his. I made six in one minute. It’s just confidence, really. Being on the Globetrotters for awhile, you feel like you can make any shot. Currently, the Globetrotters have three women on the squad. How have they impacted the team? Having women come back to the team after so long has really taken us to another level. We were the first all-male sports team to have a woman play in 1985. There have been 12 in our history and three of them are on the team now. We are beloved by everybody of all ethnic backgrounds and gender; but with women on the team, we’ve just opened up the double doors, so to speak. All three of the women on our team – Sweet J, TNT and T-Time – bring a lot to the table and they do a good job. The young ladies and little girls who come to our games just eat it up – they love them so much. We all appreciate and respect the work you guys do on behalf of the military, but what are you doing to improve the Commander in Chief’s game? A few of my teammates have been to the White House and they beat the President in a free throw contest – he did some push-ups for missing. Obama also took some shots and did some dribbling with TNT. We showed him a thing or two Globetrotter style – tried to rub off on him a little bit. Didn’t work.

I noticed that you have a player of my advanced age on the team. Is there still hope for me to become a Globetrotter? Well, the 44-year-old we have on our team is a freak of nature. He’s still slam-dunking the basketball. But maybe you can be an announcer at one of our games. We don’t want to put you on the court – don’t want you to bust your knee or something and use your insurance during the holiday season (laughs). – TE For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com.

inter Jam 2015 marks the 20th year of Christian music’s biggest tour. What began as a one night showcase back in 1995 has evolved into an annual sell-out trek across the US, attracting big names like Third Day and MercyMe. This year’s line-up is stacked with diverse talent, including guitar-heavy headliner Skillet and singer/songwriter Jeremy Camp plus first-timers Family Force 5. Known for wild live shows and a modern sound that draws on everything from EDM to hip hop and rock, the Atlanta-based FF5 have pushed the boundaries of the Christian genre – often to the consternation of purists. But there’s no debating the band’s energy and passion. Guitarist Derek Mount kindly spoke with News4U about the haters and his love of music.
I think the answer is yes – it definitely opens up a few musical avenues that we’ve never really gone down before. Two of my favorite songs on the record – “This is My Year” and the title track – have this great falsetto from Jacob. We used some Michael Jackson recording techniques that explore that side of our sound that we’d never really gone into before. We have total respect for Solomon – he’s a gifted and amazing vocalist – but his departure has made the band grow in a good way. With FF5’s reputation for wild live shows, I would hate to be the band that follows you at Winter Jam. You know, I think as much fun as we have and as crazy of a band as FF5 is live, we have found
There’s been so much discussion amongst fans and critics about whether or not FF5 is actually a Christian band. How sick are you guys of the whole thing? (Laughs) I think it depends on what day you ask. To be honest, there’s so many times that we read something and we’re like ‘man, are these people serious?’ But then sometimes it’s awesome, because people are talking about us. We’ve gotten to do a lot of really amazing things that other faith-based bands haven’t been able to do. It doesn’t bother me currently, but I will say that there have been times when it hurt our feelings. There’s a major electronic element to FF5 songs that has developed over time. As a guitarist, does that frustrate you at all – or do you enjoy the challenge of fitting your rocking style into a dance format? I love the challenge of trying to make music that is still guitar driven but is very modern and relevant. It’s really funny how often people think a sound is a synthesizer and they’re like ‘what happened to the guitar?!’ And we’re like ‘that actually IS a guitar – we just played it in a weird way.’ Guitar to me is a passion, but music is an even bigger passion. As long as the songs touch people, I’m happy – even if they don’t have any guitar in them. The new album, Time Stands Still, is the first without Solomon Olds at the mic. He has been replaced by his brother Jacob who has a much smoother, more mainstream voice. Does his style of singing open up new possibilities?

that a lot of bands hold their own. We just got off a wonderful tour with Newsboys and they just do their thing so well. The crowds just love to see a band that’s genuine. There are some great artists on Winter Jam, and I think it will be a fantastic, really diverse evening of music. We’re really honored to be on the tour. – TE The full Winter Jam 2015 line-up: Skillet, Jeremy Camp, Francesca Battistelli, Building 429, Family Force 5, NewSong, For King & Country, Blanca, About a Mile, Veridia & Speaker Tony Nolan. Hard to believe, but here we are entering phase two of the 80th EPO season. The orchestra went out with a bang in 2014; the annual Peppermint Pops and Nutcracker performances delighted both the young and old, filling everyone that attended with the true spirit of the holidays. Together, they provided the perfect end to the year and set the stage for a run of much-anticipated performances over the coming months, including Mozart! (and Salieri), Beethoven & Tchaikovsky, The Ultimate Glee Club and the dynamic conclusion, Disney Live in Concert: Pirates of the Caribbean. First up in 2015 is a “timely” production that pays tribute to one of the most popular television shows of the past five years: PBS’s Downton Abbey. The British period drama detailing the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the postEdwardian era has captured the attention of the American public in a big way despite (or perhaps because of) its atypical subject matter and presentation. The show is also a huge hit with critics and has scored multiple awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Miniseries or Television Film and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie. On January 17, the EPO invites you to show up at the Victory Theatre dressed in period attire and travel back in time to the early 1900s – to the era represented in Downton Abbey. Led by the incomparable Maestro Savia, the orchestra will perform a captivating selection of pieces, including:

When Monster Jam comes to town, it’s like a rock concert on wheels. The roar is almost deafening from both the trucks AND the crowd. The annual, family-friendly event is a celebration of big tires, big engines and fearless drivers. It’s a combination that makes for a wild display of monster truck acrobatics and gravitydefying maneuvers. No one knows that better than Louisville’s Derick Anson, owner of Heavy Hitter and River Rat. He kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the two-day blow-out. In addition to monster trucks, you also have a history of figure 8 racing – which looks diabolical. We race outlaw cars – the world’s fastest race car besides a sprint car. Imagine being in a rollercoaster on rails – that’s what it’s like if your car is handling correctly. You can’t turn the car with the brake on or if you’re touching the throttle. They are freaking bad-fast, dude. But, I’m just an adrenaline junkie, honestly. I turned 46 years old in December, and if they had had the X Games back when I was younger that’s probably what I would have been doing. Speaking of injuries, what shape are you in physically after bouncing around in a monster truck for two hours? You’re not going to believe me, but if you took off running and jumped in your bed tonight, that’s going to hurt you worse than when I jump my monster truck – as long as I land on my tires. The seats are molded to our bodies and we are ratcheted in to where we do not move. The only thing that moves besides our legs from the knees down is our arms. Now, I have
14 | January 2015
• www.evansvillemediagroup.com
stung myself some in my neck and back when I didn’t land on my tires and wrecked the truck. But other than that, monster trucks have never hurt me. Is it normal for monster truck drivers to be in their mid-40s? I started at 19 years old and drove for someone else before Monster Jam was even invented. The only reason why I’m still doing it now is because I own these two trucks – the Heavy Hitter and the River Rat. Normally, you would have to be in your early twenties for Monster Jam to hire you. But if you build your own truck and get noticed out on the circuit and book some shows and get in some videos, it’s possible to get hired at an older age. What’s your commitment to the Monster Jam tour? Do you intend to keep racing? My contract has eight shows on it. But that doesn’t mean I won’t get more. I could have done more shows over the summer, but I was already booked with other promoters and racetracks. You have to have a lot of friends in the business of monster trucks, because the trucks don’t make any money. You get paid, but so much stuff gets torn up that the cost of the parts and labor to fix everything just gets covered by the race money; money just gets moved around. If it was easy, everybody would do it (laughs). But, I’m already so deep in it now – it’s just my dream to do this. – TE Show times: 1/10 (2 p.m. & 7 p.m.), 1/11 (2 p.m.). In the first CC installment, we meet a much younger Eddie Crunk, an aspiring musician with dreams of making it big – or at least making it out of Kentucky. As the story unfolds, he forms a white-hot local band, crosses paths with country superstar Alan Jackson and comes tantalizingly close to stardom, all before the close of the 80s. Buckle up.

The year is 1975. The Vietnam War has finally come to an end, gas is 44 cents a gallon and a teenaged, musicobsessed Eddie Crunk is on the look-out for talent in and around White Plains, Ky. By day, he hauls coal for 12 hours; nights are spent practicing guitar, keyboards and harmonica. Eventually, his youthful determination pays off when he meets three like-minded musicians, including a female drummer, a rarity in that era. The legendary Fancy Free Band is born. “What made us interesting is that everybody in the group could play at least two instruments and everybody was a lead vocalist,” Crunk recalls. “I guess you could call us the pop hits jukebox – we tried to cover everything.” With a repertoire of nearly 100 songs, Fancy Free shows are a musical free-for-all. By 1977, the band is being booked for 20 shows a month, many of them in outlying “dry” areas. “We played 33 clubs in Hopkins County from ’77 into the 80s – all illegal; it was all bootleg selling of alcohol,” Crunk says. “We were at the Madisonville Eagles in 1977 when the police came in and raided the place. Two of us in the band were under 21 and even though we weren’t drinking, the place still got written up twice – for bootlegging and for underage patrons.” Fast-forward a number of years. Still together, Fancy Free is the “it” band in Henderson, regularly packing the Filling Station Lounge where a future country music superstar likes to unwind. Alan Jackson is just another songwriter trying to get somewhere, no different than Eddie Crunk. And yet, the girls are already taking notice and immediately flock to him when he walks in. Jackson is impressed with Fancy Free’s musicianship and often sings with them during his off-hours from the nearby
Black Horse Lounge where he plays six nights a week. “He was a cool guy,” Crunk recalls. “After closing, we would go down [to the Black Horse] and meet with his band – sit around and talk.” About a year later, Crunk sees Jackson again – this time in a video on Country Music Television (CMT). It’s the beginning of a phenomenal career and a signal to Fancy Free that anything is possible. “We thought because Alan was doing it, we had a shot, too,” Crunk says. “We had released a cassette tape, Lonesome Highway, and it was starting to help us out quite a bit. We moved up from the Filling Station to the Executive Inn in Evansville, Owensboro and Paducah. Then we went to places like South Carolina and New Orleans – mostly hotels.” In 1989, Fancy Free parlays this newfound success into a two album contract with Vista Records International out of Nashville and enters the same studio where Garth Brooks is laying down tracks for the future number one hit “Two of a Kind, Workin’ on a Full House.” However, their self-titled debut is hopelessly stuck between genres. For a band that covers everything from Conway Twitty to Poison, it’s not entirely surprising. “Because of our fan base, we could have done anything, and they would have thought it was great,” Crunk explains. “The thing that hurt us was that our original music wasn’t really that great (laughs). When we went to a town where nobody had seen us and played these songs, they didn’t like it.” Adding to the band’s woes, there is no manager or advisor to steer the ship. As the decade comes to a close, the members of Fancy Free are feeling anything but… -TE Stay Tuned for Part 2 of the Crunk Chronicles in February. K.C. CHESSER: Owner/Operator of KC’s Time Out Lounge & KC’s Corner Pocket I recently traveled to Las Vegas for an auto trade show. After just three days – and despite all of the good things that I’d heard about Sin City – I couldn’t wait to get back to Evansville. It’s a place that means so much to me and where I feel most at home. One thing that I truly appreciate about this city is how loyal the people are to local business owners. They really want fellow natives to succeed, and I believe that’s how I obtained my confidence. For example, when I made the decision to move the Time Out Lounge from the Executive Inn to Washington Square Mall, everyone was so positive. It was a risky move on my part, but against all odds, the risk paid off, and I can’t thank people enough for sticking with me. Even though the new location was on the other side of town, everyone continued to support the Time Out Lounge and over time, it has only gotten bigger and better. I attribute the success of both KC’s Time Out Lounge and KC’s Corner Pocket to the relationships and the trust that I have built with the people of Evansville. Evansville is very fortunate to have such strong community involvement. I notice how much people want to give back through supporting local charities and fundraising. We all take pride in our city and want it to move forward in a positive direction, and that is great considering what is happening in the rest of the world. A final note about the brave men and women who keep us safe in Evansville: In my travels, I have visited many big cities, and I think we take for granted how well our police and sheriff departments work together and how dedicated they are to ensuring our safety out in the community. We owe them a debt of gratitude. I want to thank the late, great Gene Hahn for the chance…

Politically incorrect. That’s the quickest – and best – way to sum up the comedy of Rodney Carrington. The 46-year-old Texan has been making inappropriate jokes for over 20 years, both on stage and on record. Carrington’s popular stand-up routine is a mix of irreverent comedy and wacky songs that he writes and delivers with mock sincerity. The titles of his albums, including 2000’s Morning Wood and its follow-up, Nut Sack, give a pretty clear indication of what’s in store. By that measure, Carrington’s latest release, 2014’s Laughter’s Good, seems pretty tame but, in fact, the material is every bit as humorously explicit. Songs
and comedy bits such as “Hookers Make You Skip,” “72 Virgins and a Crown,” “Conversations with My Penis” and “The No Sex Penalty” are raw and outrageous. In other words, it’s exactly what his fans have been waiting impatiently for since 2009’s El Niño Loco. But he’s back and ready to completely offend everyone again with the “Here Comes the Truth” tour. After years of working the clubs, Carrington made his first big splash in 1998 with the release of Hangin’ with Rodney, a laugh-out-loud recording that featured the self-explanatory song “Letter to My Penis.” It was quintessential crude humor and the blueprint for Carrington’s entire career. If you didn’t get the joke then, you were never going to get it. Though the song was not a hit in any sense of the word, it got the ball rolling and paved the way for Morning Wood – a top 20 album on the country charts. Soon, Carrington was packing venues all over the country, particularly in the south. With the momentum building, he released the classic Nut Sack album in 2003, another top 20 success. It wasn’t long before TV networks expressed interest and in 2004, Carrington signed on with ABC to produce a sitcom based primarily on his life called, simply, Rodney. The show ran for two seasons. Back on the comedy circuit, Carrington released two more albums, King of the Mountains and El Niño Loco, in 2007 and 2009, respectively. They were followed by his first holiday album, Make It Christmas. It would be five more years before Laughter’s Good arrived in late 2014. – TE For ticket info, visit centre.evansvillegis.com.

In October of 2007, Darren Whitesides, an ambitious pharmaceutical representative, purchased a run-down bar at 713 N. Green St. in Henderson, Ky: Riverbend Food Factory. “I wanted a restaurant, but I found out that I bought a bar. I didn’t realize that Henderson had recently changed their ordinances, so if you smoked, then you were a tavern or a bar, and you couldn’t allow kids inside. I just went along with it. I’d never been in this business, and I had no idea how difficult it was to run a bar or a restaurant. In 2009, my pharmaceutical contract was up, and I started relying solely on this place and have been in the process of switching it over from a bar to a restaurant since then,” Whitesides explains. The restaurant has been remodeled and is now a successful, smoke-free establishment. The menu offers a variety of items, including a children’s menu, and Whitesides is constantly working in the
kitchen to add exciting, new choices for his guests. It is a friendly environment, and he works hard to maintain a relationship with his customers, greeting many regulars by name as they are seated. Riverbend sets the bar higher than the average sports bar pub grub, but still offers traditional American favorites such as burgers, pizza and fries. “This is a sports restaurant. You can come into a neat atmosphere with gourmet food and watch a game. Today we have a grilled salmon topped with sautéed tomatoes with butter garlic sauce, and coconut-crusted cauliflower and broccoli with almonds as our lunch special. I’ve traveled all over the United States. I know what I want people to see, taste and smell.” Whitesides is adding even more new dishes that are expected to hit the menu in the upcoming months. – Lindsay Taylor Follow Riverbend Food Factory on Facebook.

here's nothing quite like entering a pub on a cold, dreary December day and being welcomed with an enthusiastic greeting and tantalizing aromas. That's exactly what happened when I ventured into Lyle's Sportszone to see what all the fuss was about. Even as a first-timer, I immediately felt at home. Miss Tammy Jo, the super-friendly daytime bartender, directed me to a quiet booth in the corner so I could enjoy the tasty fare on offer. As the name of the establishment and decor imply, owner Lyle is a sports fan, baseball specifically. On the top right corner of the menu is a character holding a beer and a giant Stromboli who bears a striking resemblance to the jovial, mustached owner. “As a Yankees fan,” Lyle says with a good-natured smile and a wink, "I get a lot of crap for it, but I'm used to it." After a quick chat, he headed to the kitchen to personally whip up some menu items. First up was the Loaded Stromboli. At Lyle's, you can choose the spice level of your Strom – mild, medium, or hot – to customize this tasty concoction of "Strom meat," pepperoni, onion, mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, tangy sauce, gooey mozzarella cheese and "special spices." According to the guru himself, the recipe has been around since about 1975. It gets two saucy thumbs up. Next up to bat was the Club House Stromboli, piled high with Chef's ham, crispy bacon and smoked turkey and topped with mozzarella on a toasted roll brushed with garlic butter. Delicious. But Lyle wasn't ready to let me leave just yet. The third Strom that I tried was the Philly Steak, my favorite. Seasoned with those "special spices," it’s full of thin-sliced roast beef, sauteed onions, mushrooms and green peppers, oozing with cheese and served with in-house Au Jus. Lyle was not blowing smoke when he promised that they have "the best Stromboli," available in half or whole sizes (both huge) and reasonably priced. The food-lover that I am, I already have my lineup ready for my next visit and I will be back, hefty appetite

in tow. I've heard tales of the occasional breakfast pizza and potato soup. Other warming homemade creations on the regular menu are chili (sign me up) and chicken noodle soup, both perfect for the season and crafted with love by Lyle's fiancee, Tara. Besides sports and delicious Stromboli, Lyle's is also known for live acoustic entertainment on Saturdays. Post up with a cold brew or stiff cocktail and enjoy the hospitable atmosphere and great food. – Whitney Patterson

Thahn Van-Nong of Nagasaki Inn Chef Thahn Van-Nong went to school in Vietnam. He moved to the United States in 1975 at the age of 19. He came in search of freedom, but sadly, after he moved to the US, several of his family members were killed back home. He has been married for 32 years to Chau-P-Truong, and the couple has one son. Van-Nong is easily one of the most talented chefs in the tri-state. Van-Nong told me that during the Vietnam War, the American army brought him and some of his family to Evansville to the Lutheran church at Washington Avenue and Boeke Road. The church members helped him find a job, and the pastor there took care of Van-Nong and his family until they could get on their feet. Van-Nong enjoys cooking and teaching others how to cook in his native country’s style. He also enjoys entertaining customers with his mastery of the hibachi grill. He has worked for Nagasaki Inn for 25 years but has cooked in Evansville for 35 years all together. Van-Nong enjoys the small community and hospitality in Evansville. He doesn't have a particular favorite thing to cook, but he enjoys the customers, putting on a show and watching children react to his expertise on the Hibachi grill. He states that he enjoys “cooking it all.” His top pick for dinner is the Nagasaki combo which is a combination of steak and lobster. This dish is only served at dinner time. Other delicious choices include Hibachi sirloin, scallops, shrimp and sushi entrees. According to Van-Nong, Nagasaki Inn is one of the few authentic Japanese restaurants in the area. They offer 14 hibachi grills and have a private tatami dining room that can hold up to 40-50 people, which is great for parties or small events. –Nikki Davis

After 14 years at our old location, we were sad to leave all the good memories behind; however, we had long outgrown the building. Of course, as many of you know, our motto is “Keeping the Dream Alive” and that’s exactly what we’re doing at our new, bigger and better location: 10722 S.R. 662 in Newburgh (at the corner of Covert and I-164). Not only do we still carry all of the same great items that we used to, but we have expanded our selection of just about everything! • Casual, Fun Men’s and Women’s Clothing • Purses and Backpacks • Candles • Gemstones • Jewelry for Every Occasion • Tobacco Pipes and Accessories (almost double our previous selection, including Hookah and Shisha) AND MUCH, MUCH MORE! If you’re looking for something groovy or something unique, we’ve got it, including one of the biggest selections of incense in the tri-state! Plus, you’ll find beautiful tapestries (we even have a blacklight room now), boxes, scarves, hats, lava lamps, statues, figurines, dream catchers, sling bags – the list goes on and on. Come on in – we’ve got incense burning, good music playing and plenty of great vibes flowing. We have something for everyone at Treasures and Pleasures where we’re “Keeping the Dream Alive!” Find us on Facebook at facebook.com/treasures1118. AREA ANIMAL SHELTERS As a huge animal lover, I would just like to take a moment to personally thank all of the wonderful people out there in the tri-state working – often for no pay – to improve the lives of our homeless cats and dogs (and a host of other furry friends). As most of you know, there are far too many animals in our shelters. But this is hardly an isolated situation. In every city across America, you will find the same problem – unwanted pets with nowhere to go, often crowded into small cages, waiting for someone to take them home. Of course, the biggest reason why we’re in this predicament is lack of education/ignorance. Many people take on pet ownership with little understanding of the responsibility. Dogs, especially, are a lot like children, requiring socialization and plenty of attention. You can’t just tie them to a tree or leave them outside 24/7 because you have a fenced-in backyard. And yet, as I jog through my neighborhood several times a week, I am continually disheartened by the number of times I see these exact scenarios – even when it’s freezing cold. Remember, animals are family members, plain and simple. Please keep that in mind. Long story short, thank you Vanderburgh Humane Society, It Takes A Village, Animal Control Shelter, Warrick Humane Society, PAAWS, Posey County Pound Puppies and other area organizations. Amy Rivers-Word probably needs Street across from the Alhambra no introduction. For those who enjoy Theatre. Listed on the National Evansville night life, she’s instantly Historic Register, the building dates recognizable as the face of Lamasco back to 1885 and was one of the first Bar & Grill, a very popular west side art galleries in Evansville. “great, old-fashioned cocktails with a modern twist as well as craft beers and local brews.” This is just the first step in revitalizing Haynie’s Corner and according to Rivers-Word, the neighboring businesses (including Bokeh Lounge and new Italian restaurant Sauced) are thrilled. “They’ve seen what we’ve been able to accomplish on Franklin Street and that working together and selling your message in a really loud voice together is so much better than not working together,” she says. “It’s not a competition.” RiversWord and Wolfe hope to have the Dapper Pig up and running by late June. They are literally bursting with enthusiasm, more than ready to tackle the challenges ahead. But as serious as the business of business is, these two entrepreneurs are all about FUN. “We want people to come away with the sense that ‘wow – that was delicious and awesome.’ We don’t want to be pretentious or unapproachable,” Wolfe says. In the meantime, Rivers-Word is busy with the Lamasco Bar expansion which will add 1400 sq. ft. of space and increase the size of the stage, loading and green room. In February, Franklin Street will host the annual Mardi Gras celebration, including the annual Gumbo Cook-off and Mardi Gras Crawl. Plus, RiversWord and the owners of Liquor Locker are set to unveil Evansville’s very first pedal bar, Let the Good Times Roll. - TE Follow Lamasco Bar and Sarah Wolfe on Facebook. An adaptation of short stories of the New York underworld by author Damon Runyon, the show is a misfit romantic comedy full of colorful characters and memorable numbers by composer and lyricist Frank Loesser, such as Frank Sinatra's "Luck Be a Lady." Depression-era gangsters, sassy showgirls, hijinks and laughs fill the stage while you meet Sarah Brown, the naive do-gooder "mission doll" out to reform the evil-doers of Times Square; Sky Masterson, the high-rolling gambler who wins her affections by bet and falls in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer; and Nathan Detroit, her reverent fiance of 14 years. The show originally premiered on Broadway in 1950 to rave reviews and was successfully adapted for film. It has boasted some of theatre and film's most talented singers and actors, such as Marlon Brando, Nathan Lane, Ewan McGregor and Imelda Staunton. Not surprisingly, Guys and Dolls is one of the most popular and adored musicals of all time. Hosted by Broadway in Evansville and presented by New York's national touring group Big League Productions, Inc., the show is helmed by accomplished international director Jeffrey B. Moss (Fame, Mayor, & The Fifth Season) and choreographed by Bob Richard (How the Grinch Stole Christmas!) with musical direction by Cherie Rosen (The Lion King). Winner of multiple Tony Awards, Guys and Dolls has also received the esteemed Laurence Olivier Award. It’s been called "the ultimate musical comedy!" by CBS TV and "the show that defines Broadway dazzle!" by the New York Times. This is a show that the whole family can come out and enjoy. – Whitney Patterson For ticket info, visit centre.evansvillegis. com or call 812-435-5770 ext. 211. 6:30 PM Allegra Lounge (Holiday Inn Airport) -- Ben Dahlquist Mark your calendars tri-state rock fans, because the ultimate tribute act tour is headed this way. The Kings of Hollywood production captures the look, sound and attitude of three of the biggest and most outrageous bands of all time: Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue and Poison – all for just $5 at KC’s. Headliner NotQuiteGNR (or Appetite For Destruction) is a dead-ringer for the real thing. With note-for-note recreations of everything from “Welcome to the Jungle” to “Civil War,” the group rivals the heyday of Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff and Steven. Currently, NotQuiteGNR is the only full-time touring Guns N’ Roses tribute act; this is your one opportunity to experience the classic hair band era live in all its twisted glory. Get ready to hear all of your favorite songs – “Mr. Brownstone,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” “November Rain” and many, many more – delivered like it was the late 80s all over again. But there’s so much more on tap. Poison’d and Red, White & Crue will open up the show with some of the best hair metal songs ever written – “Talk Dirty to Me,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “Home Sweet Home,” “Dr. Feelgood” and the list goes on. Just like NotQuiteGNR, these two tribute acts faithfully recreate every aspect of the band. Reviews for previous Kings of Hollywood dates have been unanimous in praise of the tour’s authenticity. Tickets are guaranteed to go fast, so be sure to get to KC’s early. Doors open at 6 p.m. 2015 is shaping up to be a big year for KC’s Time Out Lounge. In January, construction starts on a new, bigger stage. There will also be more seating, more pool tables and another bar. With this expansion, KC’s intends to book more regional and national acts – all at the same low price that people have come to expect (and appreciate). In addition, the two-day Suds on Green River Music & Bierstube Festival will return in June with even bigger names than last year. Friday night will feature high profile country acts and Saturday will be all rock and roll. More details to follow in the coming months. – TE For more info, follow KC’s on Facebook or call 812-437-9920.

Every once in a while, a big show comes to town with little advance notice – or at least not enough notice to report on in full, i.e., request an interview and advertise it on the cover. That’s very much the case with Kevin Hart’s upcoming performance at the Old National Events Plaza. Word of the hugely popular comedian’s tour stop in Evansville came at the last minute, just before N4U’s deadline. And in fact, by the time you read this, the show will most likely be sold out; tickets were being snatched up quickly within the first few hours of going on sale. Yes, Hart is pretty much on fire right now. He’s the “it” comedian of the moment, in demand across America and beyond. It surprised exactly no one when he took home the People Magazine award for Comedy Star of the Year on December 18. And while he’s killing it on stage, Hart is also making his mark on the big screen. Currently, he’s featured in Chris Rock’s excellent new film, Top 5, but you can see him in a number of recent roles, including choice parts in Think Like a Man Too, About Last Night and This Is the End. And that’s not to mention his comedy DVDs, big sellers like 2013’s Let Me Explain and 2011’s Laugh at My Pain. Continued on next page.

localtalent bp media/Blackstrap Pictures
ust across US 41 heading west towards downtown Evansville on Lincoln Avenue, there’s a non-descript business sign out in front of a two-story home on the left that reads bp media. It’s easy to miss and, in fact, I blew right by it on my way to interview Kevin Chenault and Lavender Timmons, two of the brains behind a very talented collective of indie filmmakers. The subtlety of the sign is indicative of the creative projects that bp media and its film division, Blackstrap Pictures, have produced over the last six years beginning with Young Islands, the complete antithesis of a Hollywood blockbuster. The black and white feature length movie takes its sweet time getting to the point as two teenage friends (convincingly played by Steven Hamilton and Joe Dodd) try to make sense of life and each other. Like molasses, the story flows slowly but surely; no forced drama, superfluous sex scenes or ridiculous gun battles. Fittingly, bp media head Kevin Chenault came up with the name Blackstrap – a type of molasses – as an ode to one of his grandmother’s favorite cooking ingredients. He needed something that would stick out when shopping Young Islands around. It worked. “We got the movie released on DVD through an
J
independent record label in Bloomington, Ind. called Gulcher,” Chenault explains. “They really liked it and agreed to do a certain amount of marketing, but the terms were really vague.” Fine print aside, it was a promising development but still not as big a deal as what happened next. “The most exciting thing was that we got a DVD review in Maximum RockNRoll,” Chenault says. “I’ve always been a fan. They could have bashed it for all I cared – and they almost kind of did – but it was still so exciting.” Shot in Evansville over 30 long days followed by nearly a year of editing, Young Islands sapped the collective’s energy and dictated the length of the next project. “The Strangers was like decompressing after the first film,” Chenault explains. “It was a twoday shoot on 16mm film that posed a lot of challenges, but it was great.” Effectively a silent movie – no dialogue but with music and title cards – The Strangers got accepted to the legendary Flyover Film Festival in Louisville which meant that Chenault and company were invited to the premiere, a “cool but nerve-racking experience.” Buoyed by the success of The Strangers, Blackstrap next tackled a second feature length film. Different Drum, starring Zach Zint and Isabella DeVoy, is a classic
road trip movie. “They didn’t even know each other beforehand, but they have really good chemistry and energy,” producer Timmons says. “I think everyone loves it and Zach and Isabella are really great.” And while the film festivals passed this time, Different Drum received a number of glowing reviews – a fact that has convinced BrinkVision to release it as a VOD in March via iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Prime. Blackstrap Pictures has another short film in the works, We Buy Computers Here, written and directed by John Thurgood. Music videos are also in production, and the collective hopes to supplement more projects with commercial endeavors under the BP Media umbrella. Local businesses should take note. – TE For more info, visit blackstrappictures.com. bp media is located at 1021 Lincoln Ave. Editor’s note: Chenault initially wanted to name the company Fancy Pants. No joke.

T
he warehouse next to Hobo Jungle on the west side of Evansville has all the makings of a kick-ass rehearsal space for a loud band. With thick concrete walls that virtually soundproof the room and enough of a clearing to leave the amps and drums in the ready position at all times, it’s pretty much perfect. Just one downside: there’s no heat. As the members of Stolen Remains and their entourage (“the machine of the band – with us through thick and thin”) file into this giant freezer on a Sunday afternoon in early December, they laugh off the cold and fire up the first of many cigarettes. I sit there shivering, wondering how in the world a band that plays with such aggression is going to rock out under these conditions. That’s when lead singer Brandon Oost, energy drink in hand, casually walks up to his customized microphone and lets rip a long, hellish howl as the rest of the band – guitarists Mike VanBibber and Justin Rodenberg, bassist Carlos Ross and drummer Drew Gray – crash in with a wall of noise that nearly knocks me off my seat. “Blackened Path,” the third track on Stolen Remains’ new EP, is furious on record but a monster live. Midway through, Gray
signals manager Charles Braner for a new drumstick; he’s already shattered one in half. “This is best we’ve ever sounded,” VanBibber says after the band plows through all three tracks off the new release in quick succession. No argument here. Local metal has rarely, if ever, sounded this good. But Stolen Remains circa 2014 has been a work in progress since the band formed some six years ago. Members have come and gone, the musical landscape has changed. But despite inevitable rough patches, founder VanBibber has managed to assemble the ideal version of the band: five guys in perfect sync, focused and driven. Rodenberg came on board just after the band’s formation in 2008 after being recommended by the original drummer. His guitar style works in perfect tandem with VanBibber’s relentless shredding. “I want to be rhythm – that’s it,” Rodenberg says. “I let Mike do what he wants to; I just stay in the pocket with Drew.” In 2010, Ross, who had previously played with VanBibber in a group called War Dogs, took over bass duties. “We were already tight – we knew it was going to work,” he says. “I was like ‘if you guys want me, I’m in 100%’” After a
soundboard
down period that nearly stopped the band in its tracks, VanBibber decided to reunite Stolen Remains in 2013. Oost lobbied hard to take over as lead singer despite his history as a guitarist. “I actually like the vocal aspect better because I get to write,” he says. “These guys let me throw my two cents in, so it’s cool.” Oost also supplied the final piece of the puzzle, drafting his brother Drew in to fill the empty seat behind the drum kit. Gray’s first show with the band was a trial by fire. “They had a gig booked on a Friday, and I had a week to learn all of the songs,” he says. “I practiced every single day, and the show went well. I’ve been loving it ever since.” A full album is in the cards as well as more local and regional shows, including a very important benefit at the band’s home base, Hobo Jungle. On January 31, Stolen Remains, Pick Your Poison and Seize the Empire will all rock to raise money for the Save Our Heroes Foundation which assists disabled war veterans. It’s just $5 at the door and veterans and active military get in free with ID. 100% of the proceeds will be donated. The show starts at 9 p.m. -TE Follow Stolen Remains on Facebook.

Leinenkugel Cranberry Ginger Shandy
Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA
Sierra Nevada Celebration
Daniel Knight • 2.5 When you pour this one up you’ll experience a hazy medium golden color with a lot of carbonation. The aroma is fruity and reminds me of ginger ale. The flavor is cranberry up front and then that ginger surfaces again with some tartness as well. It actually seems more like a soda pop than a beer. It’ll likely be enjoyed most by those who aren’t beer lovers anyway. I’m giving it a 2.5 because it deserves some credit for representing a beer tradition.
Daniel Knight • 4.75 Dogfish Head brews were not available in Indiana for a couple of years or so and now they’re back. I really like this great IPA! 60 Minute pours a rich opaque honey color with a two finger head that settles down to a persistent thin layer. The lacing is nice and is entertaining to observe as your glass empties. The smell is mostly of citrusy and piney hops. There’s a hint of malt and booziness in the aroma as well. A non-IPA drinker would likely call this a hoppy beer, and it is, but the balance makes it a great choice as a session brew for IPA drinkers.
Daniel Knight • 4 This is an excellent execution of an annual tradition for Sierra Nevada. It pours up a rich, orange-ish amber color and produces a creamy, off-white head that hangs around and leaves a lot of lacing. The smell is mostly of citrusy hops and pine. Nice. The flavor is mostly like the smell with a notable hop presence and a pleasant malt balance that complements the overall drinking experience. If you’re reluctant to try it— feel the fear and do it anyway. My guess is that you’ll not regret it.
Paul Bragin • 3 A thin white head tops this golden beer, but it evaporates rather quickly. The scent contains overwhelming notes of cranberry. The cranberry remains when first sipping the beer, followed by a bit of ginger, with more cranberry in the finish. This beer seems better suited for summertime drinking on a hot day as a refresher than something to drink during the winter. Its low alcohol content makes it suitable for drinking several bottles during summer’s intense heat. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a cloudy, golden-colored beer and I was not really looking forward to tasting this one. It did not sound very appealing to me, but I was wrong. I would put this beer in the same category as all the apple beers coming out, but I liked this one. This one is pretty sweet so drinking more than one or two may be too much. Follow us on twitter @

Paul Bragin • 4 This straw-colored IPA forms a decent white head that disappears very slowly and never completely vanishes. Hop notes with pine fill the nose when smelling the ale. The hop presence continues when drinking the beer, where more citrus notes come through, especially in the long finish. Pair this great offering from Dogfish Head with spicy foods or pizza. It might intimidate novice beer drinkers, but veteran hopheads will definitely appreciate this one. Jabez Martinez • 4
This beer poured a nice amber color, and I could smell the hops right away. I liked this one a little better than the Sierra Nevada because the hops had a sweeter flavor and not as aggressive. It was not too heavy on the hops and was a little sweet.
Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick and lasting off-white head rests on top of this light, amber-hued beer along with a nice balance of hops and malt round out the scent profile, with a slight edge toward piney hops. The equilibrium remains for a moment when first drinking the beer, but then the hops come to the forefront and dominate the finish. Pair it with turkey and stuffing for a nice holiday treat or fish and chips for a taste of England. Jabez Martinez • 3.5
This is a cloudy, amber-colored beer with good carbonation. It had the standard crisp hop flavor as stated on the label, but it was quite heavy so my mouth was bombarded with the bitter hops flavor.
Franziskaner Weissbier
Daniel Knight • 3 This is essentially a southern German style of dark wheat beer. Supplied in a 16oz bottle, it pours up a notably cloudy light brown color with a two finger khaki-colored head that fades within a minute or two. The aroma is subtle but pleasant with hints of bananas, cloves and maltiness. The flavor follows suit resulting in a smooth, malty drinkable brew. Personally, it’s not something I’d seek out despite its drinkability.
Paul Bragin • 5 A thick, tan/white head forms on this dark brown beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. The sweet scents of wheat and malt take hold of the nose when sniffing the beer. The taste of wheat first hits the palette when drinking and is followed by a hint of banana that is a common part of the flavor profile of many wheat beers. This beer is versatile enough to pair with both lighter and heavier dishes

Sometimes as I sit in the audience of local shows, I gaze around the room at empty chairs and honestly wonder where everyone is and what the litmus test is for some when it comes to supporting musicians. My senses are flooded with everything that music means, everything that it provides and demands from listeners. I get those feelings from artists of all levels of "success," in many venues, whether it's in my car, a stadium, a bar, or someone's living room. However, there is a certain sense of intimacy that is achieved only by those small, rapt audiences and the uninterrupted calm of the artists sharing their creations in an often free environment. I see fans of nationally recognized bands sharing videos and checking in to concerts on social media. As I sit and calculate ticket prices and download sales and radio play, something just doesn't sit right. There are these adamant declarations and overused hashtags lately about supporting all things local, but those empty chairs tell a different tale. Don't get me wrong, if someone rolls into town whose CDs I've played bare, I'll probably shell out the cash to see them, and when my favorites churn out a new album, I'm purchasing those tracks. But in between, I go to local shows and I let everyone know about it. This information age can be so powerful when it comes to showing the world that this band which plays in this tiny venue, in this tiny

town, makes love to your ears in the same way the overplayed famous bands do. Show them some love. Invite some friends, pull up a chair, post a picture (then put the damn phone down), buy an album and let those fledgling artists know the worth of their jams. Applause is free, and you can't put a price on that shared experience. Signed, Whitney Patterson – Local Music Junkie

Interstellar shows what the medium of film can do and the possibly limitless places that we can experience; it takes us to the furthest reaches of our imagination and current scientific theory. Despite its long running time of nearly three hours, Interstellar seems to be over in a heartbeat. You are invested in the characters and completely enveloped by the story – you simply don’t want it to end. What sets great films apart from good films is a distinct sense of place. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Inception all have this wonderful sense of place. When that place happens to be something you’ve never imagined being film-able, well … that is even better. Places that stretch, bend, and sometimes break what we know of as reality are possible within this medium of film. At times Interstellar is as personal as a father saying goodbye to his daughter. At other times it’s as big as traveling through wormholes to other galaxies in search of a new home planet for the human race. Interstellar,

like so many films before it, ties these big and small ideas together. But where Interstellar is different is in its distinct places. At one point, the character Murph (Mackenzie Foy) throws her father’s watch across her bedroom. Later, we see this same scene from an almost indescribable perspective. It’s this sort of moment that sets Interstellar apart from other space tales. Emotionally impactful scenes seem to hit you hard one after another. At the center of the film is the relationship between Cooper (Mathew McConaughey) and his daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy). This relationship is masterfully written by Jonathan and Christopher Nolan. There are struggles between characters and against time. When Murph throws the watch, that moment is representative of how the characters feel within the story and how we all feel in life. Time is the one true obstacle. – Kevin Chenault (Blackstrap Pictures/bp media)
Oculus (R)
Relativity Media With the recent influx of slasher, zombie/ infection and beaten-to-death possession films, we horrorlovers have been left wondering if there is any creativity at all left in the genre. Of course, the whole mirror thing has been done, or at least been given a nod, and a bit of possession is included in the film, but Oculus can at least stand on its own two feet without depending on five minute interval jumpy scares and gratuitous gore. Again, this isn’t the first film to tackle the quest of a person out to prove the innocence of someone accused of killing their family by means of shedding light on supernatural activity. It will, however, make your palms sweat. Unexpected twists and a surprise ending keep you riveted to your seat. Directed by Mike Flanagan (Absentia, Still Life) and with a musical score by the Newton Brothers, Oculus is a film worth watching. Siblings Kaylie (Karen Gilian) and Tim (Brenton Thwaites) try to patch up their relationship after being estranged during Tim’s stay in a mental health facility following their parents’ bizarre deaths. With the siblings’ completely different memories and rationalizations of the events leading up to the deaths, the past starts to intertwine with the present, reality becomes questionable and the cost of learning the truth becomes too great; but someone is going to have to pay. The acting is intense, with performances by Rory Cochrane (the stoner from Dazed & Confused), newcomer Annalise Basso and award-worthy Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica). Let’s just say that you probably won’t be hanging any antique mirrors in your home after watching this film.
The Double (R)
Magnolia Pictures It’s been a while since we’ve had a film this dark and tedious that still has the ability to keep viewers holding on until the end. If you’re a fan of yarns like Memento, Fight Club, and The Machinist, check it out. Based on the novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky, the film’s cinematography is pointedly bleak, with a quick, witty script. Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg) is a mealymouthed, hard-working persona non grata despised by his mother, unrecognized by co-workers and ignored by his secret love, Hannah (Mia Wasikowska). While his isolation may seem almost satirical at times, the point is made with startling clarity throughout the film. After witnessing the suicide of Hannah’s stalker, the two begin to have something to chat about. Enter James (also played by Jesse Eisenberg), Simon’s physical twin and womanizing sharp-tongued doppleganger. Whilst becoming Simon’s coworker, James takes him under his wing to help him catch the girl of his dreams. A tangled web of stolen recognition, misplaced blame and tawdry seduction ensues as James appears to be taking over Simon’s life. As he tries desperately to take it back, his world starts falling away in pieces and he starts to question everything he’s ever known. Director Richard Ayoade was nominated for three film festival awards for The Double and deservedly so. Eisenberg’s performance as both characters is noteworthy as well and Wasikowska’s portrayal of the twit known as Hannah is convincing enough to make you want to throw popcorn at the screen. Two thumbs up. – Whitney Patterson
Original music is alive and well in the tri-state… First, a collection of songs 10 years in the making: Nowhere Near the End by Byron Rohrig. He’s the very definition of a troubadour, delivering his songs simply and with the conviction of someone who has lived every word. But while Rohrig’s performances are stripped down, the studio versions add just enough flourishes to expand the sound but not lose the gut feeling. His slightly weathered voice has a character all its own; in spirit it has echoes of Fogerty, Mellencamp and Prine. Highlights include “Everybody Wins,” Goin’ Nowhere Blues” and “The Great Deluge” – all of which touch on social as well as personal issues. NNTE is available at Goldman’s, Musician’s Den, Opus 1 Music and Historic Newburgh Gift Shop. Back when we interviewed Calabash for Soundboard, they were busy trying to pick 10 songs from a huge stockpile for a long-overdue album. Eventually, seven made the cut. Honest Work successfully bridges the gap between stage and studio – tricky considering these guys are known for stretching out live with no boundaries. And yet, they’ve somehow honed the act on record, knowing just when to pump the brakes. Jarod Heim and Paul Wiemeier handle vocal duties, each bringing a different vibe as heard on opening tracks “My Things & Move” and “As Long As There Is Love” – the former an Allman Band-esque jam; the latter a darker, slinkier affair. All the live elements are intact, including the band’s fantastic rhythm section. They save the best for last with “Struggle of Thought,” the longest and most free-flowing track with a serious groove.
