Holding true to guitarist Tommy Shaw’s proclamation that Styx will “rock till they drop,” the band is back out on the road after a short break, headlining a theatre tour across America. The Chicago-based group known for such hits as “Come Sail Away,” “Lady” and “The Best of Times” still loves to perform; even five decades in, the fire burns bright. Bassist/guitarist Ricky Phillips, a former member of The Babys and Bad English, spoke with News4U about finding his place in Styx and the future of the band. The Babys started just a couple of years after Styx released their debut album in 1972. What was your initial impression of the band? I was playing in a lot of clubs at the time, traveling around the country, and I remember going through Salt Lake City and hearing “Lady” which was a huge hit. They’d had a couple albums out before that, but I wasn’t aware of them until then. I thought the song was cool, because it was tough underneath the sweetness. In the later 70s when The Babys were on the road with Styx and I first met the guys, (Babys lead singer) John Waite and I would go out front and watch. It was just this crazy thing – three lead singers with completely different styles – and yet the sound of the band always stayed true. How did your bass playing mesh with the band initially? Did you have to adapt your style or did you simply put your own spin on the classic riffs? Probably a little bit of both. I was concerned about it at first, because I come from a little bit more aggressive approach on bass. But I figured that I understood the band well enough to know how to fit in. I certainly

didn’t want to be a karaoke player at that point in my career. So what I did was learn everything that (original bassist) Chuck Panozzo did and then I added little bits. Over time, the parts comfortably became my own while staying true to the Styx catalog. Styx often plays arenas with the likes of REO Speedwagon and Foreigner. This time the band is out on its own in smaller venues. Do you prefer that to the package tours? I think this tour is where we like to be. It’s nice going out during the summer and playing the big arenas, the big rock show. But the favorite bit for all of us is when we get to play a House of Blues or a small theatre where at some point in the show, people get to rush the stage and grab at your feet – it’s so much more intimate. And we can play a longer set with deep cuts instead of just hit after hit. We can see and feel the excitement from the crowd when we play a song that nobody expects to hear. You’ve been with Styx for years. What’s the vibe right now in terms of the band and its future? I’m in my 12th year with the band, and it’s just flown by – we’re having a blast. In fact, we just had a dinner last night because we’ve been off through the holidays. We were talking about how we still dig each other and still love playing the music. The band has elevated itself very carefully and very meticulously. I’m very impressed with the way the guys have taken care of Styx. I wish that some of my prior bands had been that careful and cautious. – TE The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. For ticket info, visit victorytheatre.com.

When we last left Eddie Crunk and his Fancy Free band mates, they were floundering, stung by the disappointment of a debut album that crossed too many genres, ultimately appealing to no one. The road to nowhere was fast approaching, and yet, in the distance, a signpost to success was about to appear…if they could only see it. It’s 1990 and despite the general consensus that Fancy Free’s debut is dead in the water, Vista Records hits upon a seemingly brilliant marketing ploy: package it together with the new release by the label’s main draw, comedian Elmer Fudpucker, guaranteeing “sales” of 50,000. Crunk and his crew are ecstatic, but the celebration is short-lived. “We listened [to Fudpucker’s album] for about 30 minutes, and we didn’t even giggle,” Crunk recalls. “We couldn’t tell if it was a joke.” Neither, apparently, could the truck stop company that agreed to sell it at all their locations. The deal is quickly nixed and

Fancy Free is once again back at square one – and back out on the road. To kill time, they document life on tour, compiling a homemade video appropriately set to “Lonesome Highway,” a Fancy Free crowd favorite. The tape is sent to numerous Nashville movers and shakers, eventually falling into the hands of a man known simply as “Saxon.” Back home after a long run of shows, the band is worn out and depressed, teetering on collapse. Then the phone rings. “I got a call from Saxon who owned a video company, and he wanted to know about redoing “Lonesome Highway,”” Crunk explains. Initially, it appears to be the long-awaited big break. But like all things Fancy Free, there is a catch: “Saxon really liked (guitarist) Danny Darnell – who was now gone and had been replaced – and that ruined the deal,” Crunk laments.

A year after Darnell departs, he returns to the fold and the wheels are once again in motion. Fancy Free’s debut may have tanked, but a fortuitous meeting with a young woman in Nashville leads to a potential deal with CBS in Atlanta. The record company is offering a $5000 prize to any employee who introduces the reps to a new signing. After handing over the Fancy Free album to her label boss, the woman calls the band to pass on the great news: CBS wants to offer them a contract. And then as if on cue, it all goes spectacularly wrong. 24 hours later, Sony buys out CBS, firing everyone in top management and, ultimately, destroying a dream. “That’s my claim to fame,” Crunk says, shaking his head. “I just missed it.” Like a real life Spinal Tap, Fancy Free is doomed. Opportunity continues to knock, but no one is opening the door. Out on the road again, the band meets a commander in the US Navy who becomes an instant fan and invites them on a six month Asian tour. Crunk, in particular, is raring to go. However, the rest of the band is bogged down with responsibility and can’t commit to such a long stretch away from home. It is the beginning of the end.

After years of near-misses, Fancy Free is resigned to regional recognition and the simple fact that the ship has literally sailed. It’s now clear to Crunk that he must forge a new musical path… alone. – TE Stay tuned for Part 3 of the Crunk Chronicles in March.

ALEXANDER BURTON

City Council Candidate I’m a proud resident of Evansville, IN and I have enjoyed being back in my hometown as a professional. That statement may catch some by surprise, but it is the truth. According to the poll given by Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, there has been a depressing level of satisfaction by the residents of our community. It listed Evansville as one of the Most Miserable Cities in America (based on the physical and emotional health of our city). I am optimistic about the direction Evansville is headed and what it has the potential to be. Our community will not reach its fullest potential overnight, but it will be an ongoing

process that should spawn positive results over time. A consensus in regards to the future of Evansville must be reached along with a vision, plan, and call to action that is reasonable, logical, and above all, fiscally responsible. It is highly important for our local government to set the tone for efficient growth by finding innovative ways to move our city forward. The plans for steady improvements to our downtown and the land that will eventually occupy the old Roberts Stadium are two examples. The momentum of making Evansville a better place has already begun and it is imperative for us to keep moving in a positive direction. I truly believe that a collaborative effort involving local elected officials, community organizations, and business leaders can take Evansville to higher heights. According to a headline published in the fall of 2014 in the Courier & Press, our city is still trying to establish its identity. In our quest to find our “identity” (or lack thereof) it is highly important that we don’t lose sight of tradition and the things that make us unique. The future of Evansville is yet to be written. We can only learn from the past and strive for greatness in the present. The goal should be to make Evansville sustainable for generations to come. It will take leadership and a consensus amongst the community. The time is now for us to build collectively and for our city to be greater!

The reinvention of the Haynie’s Corner Arts District is in full swing with renovations currently taking place at the Alhambra Theatre and Bokeh Lounge plus the impending arrival of the Dapper Pig, a revolutionary farm-to-table restaurant and bar conceived by Amy Rivers-Word and Sarah Wolfe. And right there in the thick of it is Scott Schymik, owner of Kirby’s Private Dining and a brand new venture, Sauced. The two buildings sit side by side on Parrett Street with a fantastic view of the neighborhood, giving customers a front row seat to the exciting changes taking place. But just two short years ago, this area was all but left for dead. “I’m on the Haynie’s Corner District Advisory Board and Design Review Board and at meetings, there would be maybe three people there,” Schymik says. “Now, there are 15, and some of the public is coming; volunteer groups are cleaning up the area. People are showing a lot of interest in this neighborhood.” It became clear that the time was right to expand. He applied for and received a Façade Grant from the city– even sold his family home – to help finance his singular vision for an Italian restaurant. After months of reconstruction both inside and out to transform what was a “pretty poor looking building,” Sauced opened its doors in December with a streamlined menu that reflects the input and creativity of all involved. “We spent many late nights out on the back patio having a cocktail and just brainstorming ideas for hours and hours. It was outrageous,” Schymik explains. The team includes his right hand man, Assistant Chef Jason Watson, and a host of other dedicated and knowledgeable people, many of whom

have worked at Kirby’s. Together, they have produced an exceptional, all-encompassing alternative to typical Italian food. “There are gluten-free and vegetarian items, some seafood and other items that you might not normally see – like fried chicken.” Schymik says. “Fried chicken is great comfort food and adding it to the menu was the best decision we’ve made.” Customers are reportedly “loving it” on top of everything from spaghetti to ravioli. Never meant to be upscale, Sauced features fairly priced entrees that include such delicious creations as Casalena, Fettuccini Alfredo, Stuffed Chicken Parmesan and Roasted Pork Shank plus amazing appetizers like Sweet Prosciutto, Salmone and Ratano Carpaccio. Desserts such as a Coca Cola Salted Caramel Float and Flourless Chocolate Torte put the cherry on top of an evening at Sauced – an experience that is more than just about great food. People are coming from farther and farther away to enjoy the atmosphere and the service, in particular. In addition to employing a first rate staff, Sauced uses Toast Tab POS Software to quickly and efficiently expedite orders. Come May, Sauced will be open for lunch to coincide with the unveiling of the back patio. In the meantime, Schymik and crew will continue working to make the restaurant “a place where everybody can eat” and a highlight of the burgeoning Haynie’s Corner Arts District. – TE Come check out the incredible selection of drinks at the Blue Bar inside Sauced.

518 Main St. Newburgh · 812-858-2782

estled in downtown Newburgh is a hopping little tavern called Cricket’s. Named after a game of darts, the building has been functioning as a bar since 1967; current coowners Molly and Brad took ownership in 2007. For the last seven years, the dynamic duo has been serving some of the best bar food in the area, providing excellent entertainment and whipping up tasty libations. Upon arrival, I was greeted with amazing smells and a friendly welcome from Molly. It’s always nice to see bar owners being hands-on; it’s a sign of a homey, hospitable establishment. In the open kitchen situated behind the wrap-around bar, Peggy was dishing out some of Cricket’s delectable creations. As a self-proclaimed chili connoisseur, I had to try a bowl, especially after I heard the word “homemade.” The deal was already sealed after the first bite; this will not be my last trip to Cricket’s. The steaming bowl of beef, beans, tomatoes, peppers, onions and spices was served with a generous amount of cheddar cheese and topped with diced onions according to personal taste. Impressive enough already, Brad has somehow perfected the art of giving his chili a heck of a kick without being too spicy.

Next I tried the Hawaiian Oven Sandwich, made with rubbed and flavor-injected (smoked in-house) pulled pork, a mozzarella/ provolone mix, onion, banana peppers and pineapples. Served with barbecue sauce on a hoagie bun, chips and a pickle, this meal is bursting with flavor and a steal for the price. Pro-tip: ask for a side of their secret-recipe/homemade horseradish for dipping, whether for chips, breaded mushrooms or onion rings. It’s phenomenal. Finally, I couldn’t leave without trying some pizza. I chose the supreme, piled high with sausage, pepperoni, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, green peppers and black olives and sealed with “too much cheese,” according to the menu. Of course, I don’t see how one could ever have too much cheese – the gooey, crispy pie was perfect to me. Can’t stay? They offer take-and-bake. With live entertainment four nights a week, including karaoke and live acts, Cricket’s is the “Best Little Bar by a Dam Site” and most definitely worth a visit. Check out their lunch specials, grab a Snowball shot and catch some live music at “a real hoppin’ place.” – Whitney Patterson

favorite is our home style cookies with eleven different varieties, including the Ono Miko-Miko (means ‘delicious’ in Hawaiian) cookie created by my daughter Alyssa when she was just 15,” Sisco says.

Piece of Cake co-owner Cate Sisco is Evansville born and raised. A 1986 graduate of Central High School, she learned to bake from her mother and grandmothers. Because Sisco has lived in Evansville her whole life, downtown seemed like the perfect fit for the business.

To better serve the morning crowd, Piece of Cake started opening at 7 a.m. last September. They now offer gourmet coffees and hot and cold lattes plus frappes, hot chocolate and tea. Soon they will be grinding their own beans. Piece of Cake is now open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Mon-Fri and from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays. In addition, they will soon have online ordering capabilities. The business also participates in several nonprofit/fundraising events annually including the Chocolate Affair, the SMILE on Down Syndrome SMILE Mile, the March of Dimes Signature Child Auction, Animalpalooza and their annual Thanksgiving pie fundraiser. Piece of Cake has also won countless awards in their 17 years of business. – Nikki Davis

She lives downtown, and her two sisters live close by as well. “Downtown has always held a special place in my heart,” she says. “I remember when my parents would bring us downtown for breakfast at Jonesie’s Café or lunch at The Farmer’s Daughter or Woolworth’s dining counter. I loved Woolworth’s because we would always get a little treat.” Piece of Cake is locally owned and operated by Sisco and her two sisters. “We make all of our cakes to order, and our frostings are made from scratch several times a week,” she explains. “Most of our cookies are family recipes, [and] we are constantly striving for excellence while adding new items to our menu.” For Sisco, the thrill of baking perfect desserts never gets old. “I love what I do! I love to create new menu items. I enjoy baking and rewriting recipes,” she says. Her favorite item on the menu is her sister Lora’s coconut truffles. “I love anything we make with coconut,” Sisco clarifies. Her favorite items to make are their scones or muffins which are a big hit with the morning crowd. Even more popular in the a.m., their cherry cheese Danishes are “simply delicious.” Of course, Piece of Cake’s baked goods are delicious all day long. “An anytime Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • February 2015

localtalent If you’ve spent any time at Old Chicago, either here in town or at other locations, you’re most likely familiar with the restaurant’s World Beer Tour. The “frequency program” was established by the franchise as a way to get customers in touch with a variety of different beers – 110 in all (new ones are rotated in periodically, but the total number remains the same). There’s no deadline to complete the tour, but the many incentives to do so include entry into the Hall of Foam plus a plaque on the wall immortalizing your efforts and a “badge of honor” sweatshirt. For those who don’t have the time or patience to go around the world, Old Chicago also offers various Mini Tours throughout the year which feature eight to 12 beers and run for about three weeks. If that sounds more your speed, then you’ll also be happy to know that a free t-shirt waits at each finish line. Speaking of t-shirts…During the last half of January, Old Chicago staged their hugely popular I Love Beer Mini Tour which grants customers the power to pick the beers. To promote the annual tour, the franchise holds a nationwide t-shirt design contest and out of thousands of entries – and

against all odds – the last two winners have been homegrown. Local graphic designers Libby Nelson and Sarah Bohrer beat out all comers in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Sam Schaffer, Manager of Old Chicago on the Lloyd, could not be more thrilled. “Having local patrons like Sarah and Libby be highlighted as prize winners out of every Old Chicago in the nation is just amazing. We’re just super-excited,” he says. Shortly after winning in 2014, Nelson also took top honors for a 106.1 KISS FM t-shirt design contest (the proceeds of which benefitted St. Jude). She went to school for advertising with a minor in marketing but always practiced graphic design on the side, eventually going full time in the field. “I sort of fell into being a professional graphic designer for an ad agency for the past eight years,” Nelson says. “I worked at what used to be Keller Crescent and then became 10 Over 12. Now I’m working as a meeting and event coordinator, but I’m still freelancing graphic design on the side.” Her current projects include the design and layout of a new local fashion magazine. In addition to winning the latest I Love Beer Mini Tour t-shirt contest, Bohrer

Libby Nelson & Sarah Bohrer has also designed two Tin Man Illustrator Glasses (#5, Dec ‘13 and #15, Nov ’14). By day, the USI graduate with a BA in Graphic Design and BS in Advertising is a Creative Supervisor at Dan’s Comp; her responsibilities include BMX catalog production (worldwide), email designs, web banners, t-shirts and stickers as well as local ads and billboards. It’s a work-intensive position that eats up most of Bohrer’s time and energy, but she loves it. “Dan’s keeps me really busy, but I feel very satisfied and don’t feel the need to indulge too much in [extracurricular] graphic design – only as time allows,” she says. “I tend to do other things like gardening and cooking. I need the diversity.” To honor the artistic achievements of Nelson and Bohrer, Old Chicago uploaded $500 onto their OC Rewards Card for food and beverage only (“no alcohol,” Schaffer clarifies) along with a booklet for a year’s worth of free pizza. “It’s our way of saying thank you for helping out our community.” – TE For more info about the World Beer Tour and Mini Tour, visit oldchicago.com.

“We used to go down to the river for water, walk for miles – no transportation, no electric,” local reggae artist Zion says of his childhood growing up on the Island of Dominica. “We used to carry the water on our heads, sometimes six or seven trips just to fill the drum. Everything was hard labor.” It was the sort of existence that few of us, if any, have experienced – only heard about. And to hear Zion tell of his upbringing on the island is a sobering reality check. As a young boy, he was raised by his grandmother. His mother was here in the US filing paperwork for him: immigrations, passport and Visa applications – all in an effort to make a better life for Zion. Up to the moment that he first set foot on American soil in Florida at the age of nine, he had no idea what to expect. However, he was not disappointed. “It was mind blowing,” the 37-year-old says with palpable excitement even all these years later. “Lights everywhere; the food was different. I took a liking to it very fast.” His struggles on the island stuck with him, though. While on a trip to St. Croix to renew his Visa, Zion first picked up a guitar to express his inner turmoil; he rarely put it down. “There was lots of playing till 3 a.m., keeping my parents up and developing calluses on my fingers,” he says. Just 16 at the time, his gift for heartfelt storytelling set to moving melodies caught the attention of Screwface Records. The Virgin Islands-based reggae label released Zion’s first cassette which received airplay and sold well in local stores. “I decided that I really needed to pursue music, because it was a gift,” he says. Inspired by the positive approach of Bob and Ziggy Marley and Lucky Dube, in particular, Zion found himself at odds with the youth of the day. “Kids my age weren’t listening to lyrics with a conscience,” he says. “I was always drawn to spiritual music.” Interestingly, he would also be drawn to Kentucky, of all places (he met a woman…) – and eventually made his way to Evansville in 2001 to help raise her son; in time, they got married and had two kids. Once here, the challenge of playing reggae music in a country town became apparent but Zion found his niche with acoustic performances at a wide range of venues: bars, restaurants, schools and wineries, even political events. He continues to add shows to his local and regional resume. “The reactions are always dynamic,” he says. “At every gig, people approach me and tell me that my music is very relaxing, like a cruise going to an island somewhere.” Now remarried to his back-up singer, Rosalyn, Zion is intent on going international. He has connections to the Marley family and a solid marketing plan but due to financial restrictions, is currently without

soundboard

a booking agent. “I have no one to really help me, because I am an independent artist,” he explains. Still, he is moving forward with the recording of his new album, World Revolution, covering the cost of distribution and packaging. The hurdles do not faze him, whether financial or geographic; it’s all about patience. “I can only take one step at a time. I’m a firm believer in the Almighty, and I believe that he has a time for everything.” - TE Follow Zion on Facebook and check out his fantastic album Crying For Freedom on Skank Records.

Ratings are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 7 Liquor Locker locations.

Yellow Dwarf Wheat Ale

Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale

Fat Head’s Head Hunter IPA

Daniel Knight • 3 This American Pale Wheat Ale is brewed in Brown County. It pours up a dirty, murky looking straw color with a tall thick white head that sticks around for a few minutes. The aroma is fruity, reminding me of canned peaches. Hops are there, but very light. The flavor is typical of an American wheat with mostly wheat and mild citrus and herbal notes. I found this beer to be very mild and drinkable yet somewhat typical and unremarkable.

Daniel Knight • 4 Here’s an American Brown Ale you’ll not likely soon forget. It pours up a rich, dark brown (like a cola) color with a beige, two finger head that mostly dissipates after a few minutes but leaves a lot of lacing. The nose is first of molasses and roasted malts with notes of hops and spices. The flavor is not for the faint of heart with bold roasted malts, burnt brown sugar, hops and more. Overall, there’s a good balance of carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. Another great example of what Dogfish Head brings to the table.

Daniel Knight • 4.5 I’ve consumed several of these in the past and was happy to see it appear in this month’s line-up. It pours a clear gold with a foamy white head that settles, ready to deposit lace around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of hops, apricot, and citrus aromas. The taste mostly follows with citrus hoppiness on the finish. This IPA has a good level of carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with an awesome citrus hop presence that makes it enjoyable and easy to drink.

Paul Bragin • 4 A very thick white head crowns this golden colored beer when poured into a wheat glass. The first scent noticeable with this beer is wheat, followed by a hint of banana. The same flavors remain when drinking the beer, although the banana seems to come through more on the finish. The beer has great carbonation and its 4.5% ABV make it an excellent choice during the summer to pair with lighter dishes. Jabez Martinez • 3 The beer poured a cloudy dark yellow with good carbonation. This beer had a grassy flavor to it but I was expecting more of a crisp wheat. It was decent but not what I was expecting.

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A tan head tops this dark brown ale. It’s a cross between a Scotch ale, IPA and brown ale. Sweet malt notes first fill the nose, with hop scents coming later. The sweet malt continues when first drinking the beer, with roasted malt and hops coming through in the finish. This beer could be paired with lighter dishes like vinaigrette based salads, but also stands up to heartier dishes like smoked meats and stews. Jabez Martinez • 5 This is a dark creamy beer with a 7.2 % ABV. I loved this beer. It had the spicy hops and deep rich flavor. I think the caramel flavors sort of calm down all the hops and make this a great beer.

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick white head rests on top of a golden colored beer. Any nose within a mile radius can smell the hops on this one, which have both pine and citrus notes from aggressive hopping. The hop flavors remain while sipping the beer, especially in the very long finish. Faint hearted beer drinkers will want to avoid this one, but people who love hops will definitely enjoy this beer, especially when paired with spicy foods. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a clear, amber colored beer and I could smell the hops right away. I liked the 7.5 % ABV and its crisp flavor. The hops flavor wasn’t too overbearing. It was pretty sweet and easy to drink.

Leinenkugel’s Big Butt Doppelbock

a sweet finish but the overall taste is somewhat shallow and watery for a beer being sold as a doppelbock. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A tan head quickly forms on this dark beer. The scent profile features roasted malt along with a hint of hops. The taste contains more of the roasted malt, but the beer seems lighter on the tongue than expected for a dark beer. This seasonal offering will be in stores until March, and fans of dark beers will definitely want to try this one while it’s available. Pair it with richer meat dishes.

Daniel Knight • 2.75 Leinie’s Big Butt pours a clear, deep amber color with a foamy, tan two finger head that ultimately fades to a creamy collar and light surface covering. The aroma is nice and presents a deep, malty aroma with caramel and just a hint of hops. The flavor is roasted malts up front with some toffee and bready nuances. It offers high carbonation and

Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a clear brown beer that looks pretty good. Unfortunately, it was on the extremely light side. I could taste the sweet caramel but not much more than that. I was wishing for a little more character but it was just OK.

Random Beer Facts! 1.) There’s about 2.5 pints of CO2 dissolved in a pint of beer. 2.) Light that’s bouncing inside the head on a pint is what makes it a different colour to the beer. 3.) When someone pulls you a pint, they are actually pushing the beer. 4.) The glass you drink out of affects the taste of your beer. 5.) When you open a bottle of beer, the air in the bottle suddenly depressurises, condensing into a tiny cloud of water vapour. http://www.factslides.com/s-Beer

Randy Houser took country fans and industry insiders by storm with the 2013 release of his Stoney Creek Records album How Country Feels. It's a new year, and as usual, I'm sure people are already losing track of their resolutions. That doughnut is just too good-looking to put down, and Pretty Little Liars is definitely more interesting than a treadmill. I would hope, however, that any self-promised character upgrades would be a bit easier to hang on to. Forgive me for taking this month's rant on the more serious side for a moment. Personally, I've experienced a lot of loss this past year and even into the new one. The main thought (albeit a bit selfish) that I'm always left with is what I wish I'd done differently with each person. Maybe I could have called, visited, etc. more. I regret circumstances where I could have been there for that person more emotionally, or maybe there was more I could have done to make their stay here on earth more enjoyable. Hindsight is 20/20. Of course, you can't beat yourself up about the shoulda-woulda-couldas; it doesn't change anything, unfortunately. The only thing you can do is focus on the present and constantly challenge yourself to be a better person, friend, child, parent, sibling, friend. This goes for strangers and acquaintances as well. We never know what battle another person may be fighting, and experiences differ so greatly for each individual. As far as we know, we only have one shot in our current consciousness, and the length of time we have is never guaranteed. Not to be cliche, because I'm being entirely genuine when I say this: smile at a stranger. Give REAL hugs to those you care about, and turn the other cheek to those who would try to break you down – their anger toward you is never personal. It may come from a place of hurt that you know nothing about. When you ask someone how they're doing, mean it. Appreciate the intangible gifts people share

Get On Up (R)

Imagine Entertainment When biopics are filmed, the story is often sugar-coated, with scathing details omitted, and a rosy glow around the artist being profiled. This is not the case here. Yes, the Godfather of Soul has been dearly departed for some time, but the meat of this film was taken from his own autobiography. The rise, fall, and resurrection of the most (or just THE most, arguably) influential player in the history of music is detailed with a powerful, inspirational, sometimes painful, and often hurried brush. From the backwoods and streets of Georgia, to the Apollo Theatre, both exciting and mortifying stories are laid bare. All aspects give the audience a taste of James Brown, the man, versus a seemingly mythical and untouchable icon. Poverty, abandonment, abuse, a broken home, and jail never stopped him from fulfilling his vision and showing the world another way of feeling music instead of just listening. Chadwick Boseman as Brown is more than just award-worthy; his portrayal is unbelievably accurate – speech patterns, walk, gestures, dance moves and all- down pat. With Dan Aykroyd as manager Ben Bart and the supporting role of Nelsan Ellis (True Blood) as Brown’s right-hand man, Bobby Byrd, the film is earthy, edgy, unapologetic, and dripping with social commentary of the times without being engrossed by it. You may not much like Brown, the man, by the end of the film: he is selfish, narcissistic, and abusive. You will, however, be blown away by his resolve, respect his contributions, and get funky in your seat the whole time.

The Wind Rises (PG-13) Studio Ghibli

The final film by writer/director Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle), The Wind Rises is a fantastical and bittersweet end of an era. Miyazaki is a pioneer of animated film adaptation, with stories and illustration to entertain audiences of almost any age. Gorgeous landscapes, fun and intelligent dialogue, incomparable characters, and soothing scores took Japanese anime to another level. I actually sort of bristle when someone calls his films anime, because the designation seems lacking. To me, the films are actually high art. In this Oscar-nominated feature, young Jiro dreams of flying by night and aeronautical engineering by day. His inspiration is Caproni, a famous Italian designer, with whom Jiro has fantasized pep talks with – one where Caproni reminds the young boy that their pursuits should never be used for war. Plagued with poor eyesight, Jiro is unable to become a pilot, but that does not stop him from becoming one of the world’s most esteemed airplane designers during a time of domestic terrorism and heightened military aggression in Japan. The film is also historically educational with references to the Great Depression, the Great Kanto Earthquake, the tuberculosis epidemic, and era-specific Japanese political history. And the film would not be complete, of course, without one of Miyazaki’s complicated and beautiful romances. With (American release) voices by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, the film is not the end of Studio Ghibli, but an apt finale of Miyazaki’s greatness. – Whitney Patterson

Devo

Hardcore Devo Live Long before “Whip It” cracked the top 20 (and eventually became the soundtrack to a Swiffer commercial), the spud boys from Akron, OH were holed up in a basement creating a tortured blues with an arsenal of primitive electronics. 1974 was year zero for devolution. The band began as a quartet: three Mothersbaugh brothers plus Jerry Casale who handled the bulk of the writing. Unsurprisingly, his skewering of male posturing in songs such as “Bamboo Bimbo,” “Subhuman Woman” and “I Need a Chick” was often lost on local audiences at the time. But now the truth can be told. 40 years after the fact (and in tribute to fallen comrades Alan Myers and Bob 2), Devo took the Hardcore material on the road and documented it for our pleasure. Here is sonic proof that there is a Spud.

Visage

Orchestral The return of Visage in 2013 was nothing short of a miracle. Drug use and hard living had all but vanquished front man Steve Strange to the dustbin of new romantics. But Hearts & Knives took most everyone off guard, effortlessly blending the classic Visage sound from 1980 with a more mature outlook. A year later, Strange and company have once again sidestepped expectations. Orchestral sees the likes of “Fade to Grey” and “Damned Don’t Cry” plus new hits backed by a symphony, complete with exquisite string arrangements that only heighten the drama. Strange sounds in complete control, a man intent on sticking around. – Johnny Fletcher

local musician spotlig ht Perry Dattilo

Dattilo has been in the drumming game since the age of 13. His first band was called Riff Raff, and he developed a style that paid homage to heroes such as Neil Peart, Tommy Aldridge, Dave Weckl, Buddy Rich, Simon Phillips and Vinnie Colaiuta. Soon, Dattilo’s drumming was right up there with the greats. You may have seen him perform in one of his many bands, including Hoosier Daddy, Exodus, Nocturnal and Division. Dattilo has placed in several drumming competitions in Nashville and Evansville including first place in both the Battle of the Feet competition at Mars Drummers Night Out in 2000 and Evansville’s Guitar Center Drum Off in both 2007 and 2009. Most recently, Dattilo placed first in Fastest Feet and third in Fastest Hands in Nashville’s World’s Fastest Drummer Competition. Not only are these accolades noteworthy, but Dattilo is the first person to ever place in both the Feet and Hands categories in the event’s 15 years. What’s really admirable is that he’s more than happy to share his talent. When Dattilo isn’t working on personal projects, he mentors other drummers. Given his success and status, it’s easy to picture future drummers listing Dattilo alongside idols like Neil Peart and Buddy Rich. – Russell Finn

cd reviews Charli XCX

SUCKER Asylum/ Atlantic/ Neon Gold Behind every pop hit is that one line or contribution from someone who just kind of disappears afterward. Charlotte Atchison cowrote and is the hook on Australian rapper Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” Now, let’s separate the two... into different rooms, planets even. Although infinitely more bubblegum than her first album, Charli at least writes her own songs and doesn’t have to use cultural appropriation to make popular music. “Break the Rules” opens the album with youthful energy and could easily be this summer’s anthem. “Boom Clap” is already happening, with pulsing bass, seductive vocals, and a chorus that will be stuck in your head for at least a week. The title song, “Sucker,” is nostalgic and born of a hot-pink version of The Breeders and early house, or a glittery Lorde on uppers. My hope is just that the album isn’t going to be resigned to insanely-repeating Hollister soundtracks. There is a sense of shallow pop naivete, but it’s resolved with an endearingly chipper overall feel and the catchiest of beats. As a co-writer of “I Love it,” (made famous by Icona Pop), Charli didn’t just appear out of nowhere, but even if she’s just now catching your ear, it’s better late than never.

Yellow Belly

Who Cares? Head Shot Records Based out of Carbondale (although, according to Jason Litherland, he wrote most of this album while living in Evansville), Yellow Belly has a sound that’s not very common these days. For me, it’s reminiscent of shows I used to go to in high school at this private shelter house in the country whose name and actual location currently escape me, for a plethora of reasons. Hill something? Something fest? Anyway, it seems to me that the resurgence is ill-timed for the plastic generation, but I’m pretty ok with it. As per usual with most punk/ska, the timing is spot-on; it’s so tight that if you truly listened, you’d never need a watch. It’s been a long time since I’ve nodded my head this hard and fast. The tracks are angsty and coarse and truthful without being generic; the title track confesses “I’ve been keeping you on the back burner/ my torch held up high/ all I want to do is crawl inside of your mind.” “Sickness” is probably the most straight-forward, and in the true fashion of the genre, two middle fingers up to the system(s). Deep. It’s a truly solid album. Check out Yellow Belly on Bandcamp. Or don’t. They probably don’t care, but it’s worth a try.

Hozier

Hozier Rubyworks/ Island

Panda Bear

Andrew Hozier-Byrne, better known as just Hozier, has been asking us to take him to church, but he, in fact, is the one taking us. The hit of monstrous proportions that has been flooding the airwaves is just the tip of the iceberg. The Irish singer-songwriter and musician with the robust voice and socially-fueled lyrics has put out an entire album of just... genuinely good music. A couple of the tracks are unbelievably radio-ready, which may have been more easily welcomed than “Take Me To Church,” but maybe it’s a sign that tastes are turning a bit to appreciation of people who actually write songs, sing well, and play those things called instruments. Plainly, Hozier is authentic. Although the album sounds vary, there is a cohesiveness present in the mixture of gospel, soulpop, bluesy compositions that smack a bit of mountain-folk. “In A Week” is a soothing harmony featuring Karen Cowley that sneaks in macabre, visual lyrics about a love from the grave. “Work Song” is a personal favorite, with tangible lyrics “I just think about my baby/ I’m so full of love I could barely eat.” Think Buddy Guys meets David Gray meets The Black Keys. Hozier’s coming in, with a lot to say, but he’s coming in the side door, because he’ll be right there before you even know what’s happening.

Sleater-Kinney No Cities to Love Sub Pop

Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper Domino Panda Bear, aka Noah Lennox, returns with his first solo album since 2011’s Tomboy. Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper might be his prettiest, darkest album yet. On tracks like “Mr. Noah” and “Boy’s Latin,” the album is filled with the repetitive drones and experimental sounds that have become a mainstay for Panda Bear and his Animal Collective brethren. And, if you want the familiar, Grim Reaper is sure to satisfy diehard Animal Collective fans. Fortunately, to those uninitiated to the cult of Animal Collective, Panda Bear succeeds in creating a very accessible album. Curious readers should seek out “Tropic of Cancer,” my personal favorite from the album. With lyrics like “It won’t come back, you can’t come back, you won’t come back to it,” the feel of Lennox approaching middle-age and sonic change really comes out. The end result is a fantastic album with animalistic themes dealing with spirituality and death.

Muteboy

I’m not going to lie. I may have hugged my computer when I saw that S-K was coming out with a new album and touring. Touring! Not a big TV watcher, so I’m like, “What’s all this Portlandia business? LET’S ROCK.” The often-political leading ladies of modern punk are back, although a bit scrubbed and spacey. There’s a staying power, sort of a guarantee, that’s proven once again on this album. It’s autobiographical, public, frank and full. Not a boring moment with tracks like “Price Tag,” with which anyone can relate, and “No Anthems,” which reminds us that bands like Paramore wouldn’t have had a stage without bands like S-K... and how Paramore pales into transparency when compared. Shudder. “Hey Darling” is an ode to the isolation of artists who’ve lost their connection with fans due to becoming almost-famous. The Zeppelin-esque “Fade” finishes out the album, showcasing Tucker’s vocals with eerily prophetic lyrics. The tune closely resembles the old S-K, mostly in message and delivery. This kind of music has been missing from the younger generation, so let’s cross our fingers that this one catches the ones who really need to hear it. Older fans are already on the same page. Move over, boys. The women are back in town.. – Whitney Patterson

Muteboy Self-released

Muteboy is a straightforward project that doesn’t mess around: garage rock power chords, pounding drum beats, grooving bass guitar. It’s fast and upbeat, and perfect for getting you pumped up on your morning commute or your afternoon jog. The liner notes of the album say “All Songs With No Words,” which is fine, but that’s also my criticism with the album. There are certainly plenty of great instrumental acts out there and Muteboy could be one of them. But the energetic punk-like guitars and driving drums beg for anthemic choruses and angry verses. Vocals could really take Muteboy to the next level, but the album is still strong as is. – Russell Finn
