Das Atomiums stellt ein 165 Milliarden Mal vergrößertes Eisenkristall dar, eine Anspielung auf die Atomkernkraft, eine Energie die damals in vollem Aufschwung war und die man für friedliche Zwecke benutzen wollte. Das Atomium verkörpert heute noch diese gleichen Gedanken über Zukunft und Universalität wie während der Expo 58. Das Ausstellungsprogramm des Atomiums wurde dann auch in diesem Sinne vorbereitet: welche Zukunft möchten wir für morgen? Wovon hängt unser Glück ab?

Die Besucher können fünf von den neun Kugeln besichtigen. In einer Kugel befindet sich eine permanente Ausstellung die der Expo 58 gewidmet ist. Eine andere Kugel ist für zeitweilige Ausstellungen reserviert, wo Wissenschaft, Fortschritt und Zukunft eine Rolle spielen.

Unavoidable icon of Brussels and Belgium, important place for international tourism, unique creation in the history of architecture and emblematic vestige of the World Fair in Brussels (Expo 58), the Atomium is the most popular tourist attraction of Europe’s Capital.

Five of the nine spheres are open to the public. One of them is housing a permanent exhibition dedicated to Expo 58. Another sphere is dedicated to temporary exhibitions with scientific themes.
It symbolizes an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times, referring to the power of nuclear energy in full development at that time and which was intended for peaceful use. The Atomium continues to embody its ideas about the future and universality, half a century later. In its cultural program it carries on the debate of 1958: What kind of future do we want for tomorrow? Our happiness depends on what?
The upper sphere offers spectacular views of the city of Brussels. When the sky is clear, the view reaches till Antwerp. The restaurant, also situated at the top, is open every day till 11.00 p.m.
Das Atomium wurde von André Waterkeyn entworfen, und stellt ein 165 Milliarden Mal vergrößertes Eisenkristall dar. Die neun großen Kugeln, mit einem Durchschnitt von 18 Meter, sind miteinander durch 20 Röhren verbunden, und werden von drei riesigen Trägern gestützt. Die Architekten André und Jean Polak waren für die Einrichtung der Kugeln verantwortlich.
Expo 58: the exhibition (permanent)
Designed by André Waterkeyn, the Atomium symbolizes an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. The nine large spheres, connected by 20 tubes, are supported by three enormous pillars and dominate with a height of 102 metres the entire Heysel plateau. The spheres, with a diameter of 18 meters, were fitted out by the architects André and Jean Polak.
Um das Atomium zu besichtigen, gibt es außer Rolltreppen und Aufzug auch normale Treppen (80 Stufen nach oben, und 167 nach unten, in verschiedenen Etappen, versteht sich).
For some people, it will be a chance to rediscover this event and for others, unfamiliar with Expo 58 and its quest for progress and happiness, an opportunity to understand the dream that still gives a magical touch to the Atomium.
Die oberste Kugel bietet eine wunderschöne Aussicht von der Stadt Brüssel und Umgebung. Bei schönem Wetter trägt die Sicht bis Antwerpen. Das Restaurant - ebenfalls in der obersten Kugel ist jeden Tag bis 23.00 Uhr geöffnet.
At night, the nine spheres are lit up with 2970 lights that offer a very special show.
Am Abend beleuchten 2970 Dioden das 102 Meter hohe Atomium und bieten ein beeindruckendes Schauspiel.

Diese Ausstellung zeigt Ihnen anhand von Archivmaterial, Bilder, Videos, und verschiedene PavillonModelle wie prestigevoll dieses unvergessliche Ereignis in 1958 war. Für manche Besucher ist es die Gelegenheit um dieses bezaubernde Ereignis wiederzuentdecken; für die Anderen, die nicht mit der Expo 58 vertraut sind, ist die Ausstellung eine Begegnung mit dem Traum, der auch heutzutage immer noch dem Atomium eine magische Ausstrahlung gewährt. Mit der Ausnahme der obersten Kugel, die nur mit dem Aufzug erreichbar ist, sind die anderen Kugeln schwer zugänglich für Personen mit geringer Mobilität und sogar unmöglich für Rollstuhlfahrer.

To access all the spheres open to the public, next to escalators and the elevator, there are 80 steps going up and 167 steps coming down (in several stages). With the exception of the upper sphere, accessible by elevator only, the rest of the Atomium is difficult to access for people with reduced mobility and impossible for people in a wheelchair.
