BE Welcome Après Bipolar et AFRICA Fast Forward, l’Atomium se réjouit de plonger à nouveau ses visiteurs au cœur de notre société. Avec be.Welcome, exposition réalisée en collaboration avec le Musée de l’Europe, nous nous penchons sur les parcours et expériences migratoires en Belgique.

Avec cette exploration de la réalité migratoire, be.Welcome participe et alimente la réflexion sur cette question. Présentée dans le plus belge des bâtiments de Bruxelles, cette initiative illustre à travers une démarche citoyenne, pédagogique et ludique, un thème sociétal d’envergure. Faire évoluer les regards et les mentalités, contextualiser le sujet et par la même le dédramatiser sont les motivations de notre propos.

Proposée dans le cadre de la présidence belge de l’Union européenne en 2010, cette initiative offre un regard novateur sur le phénomène migratoire. Avec une grande sensibilité, mais sans faux-semblant, le parcours envisagé telle une “quête du papier” sera l’occasion d’offrir aux visiteurs une approche interactive de ce fait de société. Bénéficiant de l’expertise du Musée de l’Europe, be.Welcome privilégie les témoignages et donne à voir non seulement le point de vue du migrant mais également la perception de la société d’accueil.

Et à terme, pourquoi ne pas imaginer que be.Welcome constitue le socle d’un centre des migrations. Lieu d’exposition autant que centre de recherche et d’étude du phénomène migratoire, cet espace devrait permettre l’appropriation collective d’une histoire qui parle de et à chacun de nous.

Henri Simons, Directeur de l’ Atomium, Arnaud Bozzini, en charge des expositions Na Bipolar en AFRICA Fast Forward, opent het Atomium opnieuw een tentoonstelling met een maatschappelijk thema voor haar bezoekers. be.Welcome, een realisatie in samenwerking met het Museum van Europa buigt zich over het migratieparcours in België. Met deze ontdekkingstocht, doorheen de realiteit van migratie, zal be.Welcome de gedachtegang over het migratiefenomeen verdiepen. Dit initiatief, voorgesteld in het meest Belgische gebouw van Brussel, zal op een leerrijke en ludieke wijze een belangrijk sociaal thema tonen met als doel de kijk en de mentaliteit te veranderen, het onderwerp in een context te plaatsen en het te relativeren.

Dit initiatief, voorgesteld in het kader van het Belgische voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie, biedt een nieuwe kijk op het migratiefenomeen. Met de nodige sensibiliteit maar zonder huichelarij zal dit traject, uitgestippeld als een “zoektocht naar

papieren”, de bezoekers een interactieve benadering aanbieden over dit maatschappelijk feit. be.Welcome zal de getuigenissen op de voorgrond stellen en zowel het standpunt van de migrant als de perceptie van het gastenland belichten.

En waarom zou be.Welcome op termijn niet kunnen dienen als vertrekpunt van een migratiecentrum? Een tentoonstellingsruimte alsook een centrum voor studie en onderzoek over het migratiefenomeen. Deze plaats zou iedereen de kans kunnen geven zich een eigen verhaal toe te kennen, voor en van iedereen.

With this journey throughout the reality of migration, be.Welcome will encourage reflection on this issue. This exhibition, presented in the most Belgian building of Brussels, will illustrate a legitimate social theme in an educational and playful manner. Our intention is to respond to the questions posed by the phenomenon of migration in addition to encouraging reflection and developing perspectives and mentalities on the issue.

Undertaken within the framework of the Belgian presidency of the European Union in 2010, this project offers a new perspective on the phenomenon of migration. The programme which is envisaged as a “search for paper” will be the chance to offer visitors an interactive approach to this social phenomenon. be.Welcome will give priority to individual stories of migration and will show not only the point of view of the migrants but also the perception of the host country.

And why not imagine that this exhibition would become the basis of a centre of migration, in the long-term. Being both an exhibition site and a centre of research and study on the phenomenon of migration, this space will allow the collective appropriation of a history which speaks to each one of us.

be.WELCOME L’immigration en Belgique L’arrivée de populations étrangères dans un pays n’est ni une chance qu’il faudrait courtiser sans discernement ni une catastrophe source de tous les maux. Aussi vieille que l’humanité, l’immigration ne s’est jamais produite sans heurts. Partir est difficile; accueillir aussi.

Il n’y a pas UNE immigration; il y en a autant que d’immigrés.

Certaines sont heureuses, d’autres sont des échecs personnels ou collectifs.

Certaines sont admises, d’autres cristallisent les tensions. be.WELCOME présente donc l’immigration à travers des histoires personnelles, sans prétendre à l’exhaustivité. Mais en espérant qu’une meilleure perception du phénomène migratoire naîtra de cette pluralité de points de vue.

TéMOIGNAGES De son sac, elle sort un objet usé par le temps : deux boules de bois reliées entre elles par une tresse de tissus délavés. Elles s’entrechoquent entre ses doigts et font retentir un des sons familiers de sa lointaine enfance, sur la terre d’Afrique. Un code. Deux coups : la voie est libre, les parents sont ailleurs ; trois : danger. Elle sourit et s’excuse, la boule mobile a dérapé : « J’ai un peu perdu la main ». Excisée à sept ans, mariée à douze à un homme beaucoup plus âgé, on ne lui a pas permis de se consacrer tout le temps qu’il aurait fallu aux jeux de son âge. Alors elle s’est révoltée. Et quand l’occasion s’est présentée, comme un miracle, elle a sauté dans un avion et est devenue Belge. Elle milite maintenant à Bruxelles contre les mariages forcés et les mutilations sexuelles qu’on inflige aux filles, là où c’était chez elle, il y a si longtemps.

Les chiffres donnent la mesure du phénomène universel que sont les migrations. Tant d’individus sont entrés ici, tant ont quitté tel pays pour tel autre.

Les rapports les interprètent, les traduisent en concepts.

Mais les chiffres les plus précis, les rapports les plus exhaustifs restent impuissants à rendre compte de l’infinie diversité des destinées de ces sœurs et de ces frères humains qui, un jour,

ont quitté famille et amis pour oser une autre vie. Ailleurs. Parmi nous.

Une vingtaine d’entre eux, au hasard des rencontres, nous ont raconté leur histoire. On en a tiré des phrases, de courts extraits choisis pour la fenêtre qu’ils ouvrent sur d’autres destinées, si différentes des nôtres et pourtant si semblables, quand on les ramène à ce qu’elles ont toutes en commun : la quête obstinée d’une vie meilleure. Et digne, surtout.

Lui, dans la mansarde qu’il occupe seul à Hoboken, et où il abrite parfois un compatriote afghan rencontré dans un parc, il fait la plonge dans un resto exotique pour payer ses études. Il parle déjà fort bien le néerlandais. « D’où je viens, on parle huit langues. En apprendre une de plus ne me fait pas peur ».

On peut supposer qu’il n’a pas un sou de trop, que même il en a beaucoup trop peu. Mais sur la table basse, près de son lit, il a placé pour nous des jus de fruits, des chips, des gâteaux. Les lois de l’hospitalité sont restées accrochées à la semelle de ses souliers troués quand il a passé la frontière. Et d’ailleurs, c’est bien chez lui qu’il nous accueille, dans ce pays lointain, humide et froid qui est désormais le sien aussi bien que le nôtre. Be welcome…

Elle a quitté Moscou pour l’amour d’un Flamand. Ils vivent à Tamise, près d’Anvers.

C’est un couple belge ordinaire. Avec une moitié russe qui a parfois quelques soucis avec l’administration.

Il a quitté son pays en guerre. Un homme, ditil, va toujours là où il se sent bien. Aujourd’hui en Belgique, demain ailleurs, peut-être. Il pense qu’on ne choisit ni sa famille, ni le lieu de sa mort.

A 14 ans, il est descendu dans la mine.

Il cultive aujourd’hui le souvenir de tous ceux qui se sont battus dans les entrailles de la terre, pour en extraire les richesses. Pour d’autres.

D’où viennent-ils? Une immigration essentiellement européenne.

Malgré les perceptions que l’on a du phénomène migratoire, les flux d’immigration montrent une européanisation de plus en plus importante des entrées d’étrangers. L’adhésion de nouveaux pays à l’Union européenne explique évidemment ce phénomène. En 2007, l’immigration noncommunautaire ne représentait que 38% des entrées. Les trois principales nationalités qui alimentent ces flux extracommunautaires sont les Marocains, les Turcs et les Américains avec respectivement 8,4%, 3,4% et 2,6% des entrées. Ces dernières années on constate également une diversification de plus en plus forte des immigrations en provenance des pays non-communautaires.

Roland Barthes nous met en garde contre le discours du pouvoir ‘phallocrate’ qui réduit les minorités au silence. L’expression d’un immigré trahira toujours une mélodie et une mentalité qui ne sont pas parfaitement synchrones à l’identité de celui qui l’écoute. Assez étonnamment, ces réminiscences de l’allochtone dérangent les autochtones. L’étranger s’étonne de ce que son étrangeté ne soit pas considérée comme une richesse pour l’esprit et la langue du pays.

Lorsqu’un étranger s’inquiète, ouvre le débat ou se risque à la critique, on l’accuse de mépris; on n’autorise d’autre attitude aux étrangers que celle de ‘supplicateur’. Se nourrissant toujours plus de

leur défiance, les autochtones s’interrogent : suis-je encore bien chez moi ? Suis-je bien celui que je suis ? Tiennent-ils l’avenir dans leurs mains ? Personne dans ce pays ne peut défendre ou venger un étranger. L’étranger ne compte pas; il est déjà suffisant qu’on le tolère. ‘Et si ça ne te plaît pas, tu n’as qu’à rester chez toi !’. Qui prête l’oreille à l’étranger, l’étranger qui tout au plus n’est que supporté ? Aux yeux de l’étranger, ces autochtones sont des assassins. Ces autochtones avec qui il lui est impossible de parler, et avec qui, surtout, il lui est impossible de parler de ses proches – ses proches d’avant, ses proches d’ailleurs – que les autres sont incapables de nommer et qui se retrouvent ensevelis dans un autre langage. “Ne pas être d’accord. Marie-France est venue, il y a 25 ans, de Haïti.

Elle en a la nostalgie, parfois, mais elle pense que sa place se trouve là où sont ses enfants et ses amis. Et puis, on trouve facilement des mangues, à Bruxelles aujourd’hui.

L’enfance d’Emir s’est enfuie quand les bombes ont commencé à pleuvoir sur Sarajevo, que papa a dû partir à la guerre.

Avec sa maman, il est arrivé à Bruxelles, son nounours dans les bras.

On lui a volé son enfance en la mariant à 12 ans, en Afrique.

Elle s’est révoltée.

A Bruxelles, elle lutte depuis de nombreuses années contre les mutilations génitales féminines et contre les mariages forcés.

Belgique – RD Congo, 50 années de migration

Le Centre pour l’égalité des chances et la lutte contre le racisme organise ce mardi 1er juin à l’Atomium, dans le cadre de l’exposition « Be.Welcome », une journée d’étude intitulée « Belgique – RD Congo 50 années de migration ». C’est l’occasion, pour le Centre, de promouvoir une journée d’information et de réflexion autour d’une migration vers la Belgique très spécifique et importante, pour des raisons à la fois historiques, politiques et sociologiques.

A cette occasion, le Centre et le Gédap (UCL) présenteront une étude démographique sur la migration congolaise vers la Belgique « Etude de la migration congolaise et de son

L’Analphabète, récit autobiographique d’Agota Kristof, auteure suisse d’origine hongroise est le point de départ de l’aventure.

Sifiane El Asad, le metteur en scène d’origine palestinienne, touché par ce court texte et conscient de l’outil pédagogique formidable que peut représenter une adaptation au théâtre, a réuni autour de lui une équipe motivée pour lui permettre d’en réaliser la transposition sur scène. A ses côtés, pour l’interprétation, Manuella Ammoun, Maryse Dinsart, Laurence Voreux, Johanne Samek et Marielle Vancamp, Valérie Leclercq et Isabelle Jamsin occupées à la scénographie et aux costumes, Géraldine Colin et Corinne Ricuort en charge de la coordination et la promotion de ce projet produit par Alan Bourgeois.

Dans « Je lis », Agota Kristof tour à tour drôle, émouvante, désarmante redonne vie aux personnages tout droit sortis de sa mémoire et s’y raconte : sa jeunesse en Hongrie, l’exil, l’intégration difficile en Suisse, son obstination à apprendre le français, langue du pays d’accueil, jusqu’à devenir l’une des écrivaines les plus primées de sa génération.

be.WELCOME Immigratie in België

De komst van vreemde bevolkingsgroepen naar een land is geen zegen die onvoorwaardelijk moet worden gekoesterd, maar ook geen catastrofe of de bron van alle kwaad. Migratie is zo oud als de mensheid zelf en is nooit zonder strubbelingen verlopen. Vertrekken is moeilijk, gastheer spelen ook.Er is geen ÉÉN migratie; er zijn zoveel migraties als er migranten zijn.

Sommige zijn een succes,

Uit haar zak diept ze een versleten voorwerp op: twee houten balletjes, verbonden door een verschoten stoffen koord.

Ze stoten tussen haar vingers tegen elkaar en maken daarbij een geluid dat ze nog uit haar kindertijd in Afrika kent.

Een code. Twee slagen: de weg is vrij, de ouders zijn weg. Drie: gevaar. Ze lacht en verontschuldigt zich. Een van de balletjes is uit haar handen geglipt: “Ik ben het wat verleerd”. Besneden op haar zevende, op haar twaalfde uitgehuwelijkt aan een veel oudere man … Veel tijd om te spelen heeft ze niet gekregen. Dus kwam ze in opstand. En toen ze de kans kreeg, als een mirakel, sprong ze op een vliegtuig en werd ze Belg. Ze voert nu actie in Brussel tegen gedwongen huwelijken en seksuele verminking bij meisjes. Net zoals haar dat jaren geleden werd aangedaan …

andere zijn een persoonlijke of een collectieve mislukking. Sommige worden geduld, andere werken spanningen in de hand. be.WELCOME schetst een portret van de immigratie aan de hand van persoonlijke verhalen, zonder daarbij volledig te willen zijn. Maar wel in de hoop dat uit die verscheidenheid van standpunten een betere kijk op het verschijnsel van de migratie ontstaat.

De cijfers verraden de omvang van het universele migratiefenomeen. Zoveel mensen die hier zijn binnengekomen, zoveel die hun land voor een ander inruilden. De analyses interpreteren ze, vertalen ze in concepten.

Maar zelfs de meest nauwkeurige cijfers, de meest gedetailleerde analyses slagen er niet in om de oneindige diversiteit van de lotsbestemmingen van deze zussen en broers te berekenen, mensen die hun familie en vrienden op een dag

achterlieten om zich aan een ander leven te wagen. Elders. Onder ons.

Een twintigtal van hen vertelde ons zijn verhaal. We haalden er stukjes, korte fragmenten uit die symbool staan voor het venster dat ze openden op andere lotsbestemmingen, zo verschillend van de onze en toch zo vergelijkbaar. Want uiteindelijk zijn ze terug te brengen tot één gemeenschappelijk streven: de onvermoeibare zoektocht naar een beter leven. Een menswaardig bestaan.

Helemaal alleen betrekt hij een zolderkamertje in Hoboken. Soms biedt hij onderdak aan een Afghaanse landgenoot die hij in een park ontmoet. Om zijn studies te kunnen betalen, wast hij af in een exotisch restaurant. Hij spreekt al een mooi mondje Nederlands. “Waar ik vandaan kom, spreken ze acht talen. Het schrikt me dus niet af om er nog eentje bij te leren.” Je zou denken dat hij geen cent te veel heeft, dat hij zelfs moeite heeft om de eindjes aan elkaar te knopen. Maar op het lage tafeltje dicht bij zijn bed zet hij voor ons vruchtensap, chips en taartjes neer. De wetten van de gastvrijheid zijn blijven kleven aan de zool van zijn versleten schoenen toen hij de grens overstak. Hij ontvangt ons trouwens in zijn eigen stekje, in dit verre, natte en koude land dat nu net zo goed het zijne als het onze is. Be welcome …

Maria is uit Ecuador weggevlucht voor haar gewelddadige echtgenoot en is hier bij haar broer komen aankloppen. Ze heeft twee dochtertjes, die allebei Belg zijn. Maria betaalt intussen wel belastingen maar wacht nog steeds op haar papieren …

Eugénie staat stevig in haar schoenen. Ze was bedrijfsleider toen ze de jungle introk op zoek naar het lichaam van haar man, die gestorven was in de strijd. Daarna is ze moeten vluchten. Ze werkt momenteel in een keuken in Antwerpen.

Hij kwam in 1949 naar België om zijn vader te vervoegen, die hier mijnwerker was. Hij heeft hardnekkig de sociale ladder beklommen. Vandaag is hij Belg.

Maar waag het niet om in zijn bijzijn kwaad te spreken over Italië …

Waar komen ze vandaan? Een in hoofdzaak Europese immigratie.

Ondanks het beeld dat men doorgaans heeft van het fenomeen van de migratie, wijzen de immigratiestromen op een steeds grotere europeanisering van de instroom. De toetreding van nieuwe landen tot de Europese Unie is uiteraard een verklaring voor dit fenomeen. In 2007 was de niet-communautaire immigratie maar goed voor 38% van het immigratietotaal. De drie belangrijkste nationaliteiten die deze extracommunautaire stromen kenmerken, zijn de Marokkanen, de Turken en de Amerikanen met respectievelijk 8,4%, 3,4% en 2,6% van de instroom. De jongste jaren stellen we eveneens een steeds grotere diversificatie vast van de immigratie afkomstig van landen buiten de Unie.

Vreemd genoeg hinderen deze sporen van het allochtone de autochtonen. De vreemdeling is verbaasd dat zijn vreemdheid niet als een verrijking voor de geest en de taal van het land wordt aanzien. Wanneer de vreemdeling zich zorgen maakt, een discussie opent of kritiek levert, wordt hij van minachting beschuldigd; men staat vreemdelingen geen ander vertoog toe dan dat van ‘smekeling’. “Het beleven van haat” – zo brengt de vreemdeling vaak zijn bestaan onder woorden. “Constant de haat van de anderen voelen, geen andere leefklimaat dan die haat.” ( Julia Kristeva) Deze haat die de vreemdeling meedraagt is tegen iedereen, tegen niemand, tegen zichzelf.

Niemand in dit land kan de vreemdeling verdedigen of wreken. De vreemdeling telt niet mee; het is al genoeg dat hij wordt geduld; ‘en als het je hier niet bevalt, dan blijf je maar thuis!’ Wie luistert er naar de vreemdeling, die hoogstens getolereerd wordt. De vreemdeling ervaart hen als moordenaars, deze autochtonen, met wie hij niet kan praten, en vooral nooit kan praten over zijn naasten – naasten van vroeger, van elders – die de anderen niet kunnen benoemen en die begraven zijn in een andere taal. “Het er niet mee eens zijn; nooit, nergens mee, met niemand. Ze vertrok op de oevers van de Zwarte Zee om uiteindelijk aan te meren op de Schelde. Florinela is een Roemeense die naar Antwerpen is gekomen om er te studeren. Ze spreekt Nederlands als de volleerde Vlaamse die ze intussen geworden is.

Jean-Léon heeft overal rondom zich mensen zien lijden. Hij droomt van een betere toekomst voor zijn land in Afrika. Maar hij behoudt zijn gevoel voor humor en spot, wanneer hij over zijn volk en hun ‘Belgische neven’ praat.

Hij vluchtte weg voor de Taliban die hem wilden rekruteren. Dat moest zijn vader met zijn leven bekopen: hij werd vermoord.

Toryalai woont nu in Hoboken, waar deze verschrikkelijke geschiedenis hem voortdurend achtervolgt.

– DR Congo, 50 jaar migratie Op dinsdag 1 juni a.s. organiseert het Centrum voor gelijkheid van kansen en voor racismebestrijding, in het kader van de tentoonstelling “Be.Welcome”, een studiedag “België – DR Congo 50 jaar migratie” die zal doorgaan in het Atomium.

Op deze informatie- en reflectiedag wil het Centrum een zeer specifieke en belangrijke migratie naar België in de kijker zetten, omwille van zowel historische, politieke als sociologische redenen.

De analfabeet

“De Analfabeet”, een auto-biografisch verhaal van Agota Kristof, een Zwitsers schrijfster van Hongaarse oorsprong, is het vertrekpunt van dit avontuur. Sifiane El Assad, regisseur van Palestijnse oorsprong, was getroffen door deze korte tekst en was overtuigd van de grote pedagogische waarde die de aanpassing van vermeld werk voor theater insluit. Derhalve heeft hij een gemotiveerde ploeg opgericht die deze aanpassing mogelijk zou maken. Met hem werken samen voor de interpretatie Manuella Ammoun, Maryse Dinsart, Laurence Voreux, Johanne Samek en Marielle Vancamp. Valerie Leclercq en Isabelle Jamsin zorgden voor het dekorontwerp en de costumen. Géraldine Colin en Corinne Ricuort zijn belast met de coördinatie en de promotie van het

projet, waarvan Alain Bourgeois de producent is.

Afwisselend grappig, ontroerend, ontwapenend, geeft Agota Kristof, in “Ik Lees”, leven aan personen die rechtstreeks uit haar herinnering opwellen. Zij vertelt er over haar jeugd in Hongarije, haar moeilijke integratie in Zwitserland, haar gedrevenheid om Frans te leren, de taal van haar ontvangstland, hoe zij een van de meest gelauwerde schrijvers van haar generatie geworden is..

The arrival of foreign populations in a country is neither an unmitigated opportunity to be courted without discernment nor a catastrophe that is the source of all evil. As old as humanity itself, immigration has never taken place without some bumps along the way. Leaving is difficult: welcoming people is as well.

There is no ONE immigration; there are as many

Out of her bag she pulls a well-worn item: two wooden balls tied together by a braid of faded cloth. They knock against each other in her hands and produce a sound that is familiar from her distant childhood, on the soil of Africa. A code. Two knocks: the coast is clear, parents are away; three: danger.

She smiles and apologises – the mobile balls went out of control: “I lost my grip for a moment”. Excised at the age of six, married at twelve to a much older man, she was never allowed to spend the time she should have been able to playing children’s games. So she rebelled.

And when the opportunity arose, as if by a miracle, she jumped on a plane and became Belgian. In Brussels she now campaigns against forced marriages and the genital mutilation inflicted on girls where she came from so long ago.

Some are welcomed, others crystallise tensions. be.WELCOME thus presents immigration through personal stories, without claiming to be exhaustive. It does so in the hope that a better grasp of the phenomenon of migration will give rise to a plurality of points of view.

The figures indicate the scale of the universal phenomenon of migration. So many individuals have entered here, so many have left that country for another.

The reports interpret the statistics and translate them into concepts.

But even the most precise figures, the most exhaustive reports cannot account for the infinite diversity of the individual destinies of all these brothers and

siters of ours who, one day, left their family and friends and dared to start a new life. Elsewhere. Among us.

Some twenty of them, chosen randomly through a series of encounters, have told us their story. We have picked out a few sentences, short excerpts that serve as a window on other destinies, so different from ours and yet so similar, if we look at what they have in common: the unfailing quest for a better life. And above all, a life of dignity.

Take this fellow, living alone in an attic flat in Hoboken, where he sometimes puts up an Afghan compatriot he met in a park. He works as a dishwasher in an exotic restaurant in order to pay for his studies. He already speaks Dutch quite well. “Where I come from, we speak eight languages. Learning one more doesn’t scare me.” We can be sure he does not have a cent more, but probably much less, than he needs. But on the low table, he has set out fruit juice, chips and cake for us. The laws of hospitality clung to the soles of his worn-out shoes when he crossed the border. And in any case, this is his home, where he is welcoming us, in this distant, humid and cold land which is now his country as much as ours. “Be welcome”…

Born in Algeria, Halima has become involved in the cause of women from immigrant backgrounds. She notes that people here have never really stopped to think about the problem she represents for society.

An artist and a Peruvian, he settled in Antwerp with his Dutch partner because here there are no exams, language or otherwise, as there are in the Netherlands.

He is Moroccan. His family is in Spain. He discovered Belgium via the police station at the Gare du Midi railway station. He is in training at Tubize in order to find his place in this society that he is just getting to know.

Did you know that...

Where do they come from? Essentially an European immigration.

Despite existing perceptions of the phenomenon of migration, European immigration is becoming more and more significant in entries of foreigners. The membership of new countries in the European Union obviously explains this phenomenon. In 2007, non-EU immigration represented only 38% of entries. The three principal nationalities feeding this non-EU flux are Moroccan, Turkish and American, with 8.4%, 3.4% and 2.6% of entries respectively. In recent years there has also been more and more diversification in immigrations from non-EU countries.

Jalal Toufic, Distracted “The correct way to call me as a living person is not the way I pronounce my name, (…) but the way my lover pronounces my name, and this even if her native language belongs to a different linguistic family (pronouncing for example the “h” in “Ahmad” as an “h”), i.e. even if my lover seemingly can never pronounce my name “right.” All my lovers pronounce my name better than I do, the right way(s).” Jalal Toufic, ‘Arriving Too Late for Resurrection’ Language is politics. Roland Barthes warned against the “phallocratic” discourse of power that makes minorities linguistically dead. The translation of an immigrant will always betray a melody and a mentality that does not fit in entirely with that of his listeners. Strangely enough, these traces of the foreigner disturbs the native population. The foreigner is surprised that his foreignness is not seen as an enrichment for the spirit and the language of his host country. When a foreigner worries about this, launches a discussion or expresses criticism, he is accused of being contemptuous; foreigners are allowed no other expression than that of a ‘supplicant’. (The native-born population thinks with ever deeper suspicion: Am I really at home? Am I myself? Are they the ones who control the future?) (Julia Kristeva)

The foreigner does not count: he or she is expected only to be patient; “and if you don’t like it here, stay at home!” Does anyone listen to the foreigner, who at most is simply tolerated? The foreigner experiences the natives as murderous, since he cannot talk to them and, most importantly, cannot talk to them about his loved ones – loved ones from another time, another place – whom the others cannot name and who are buried in another language. “To disagree. Constantly, about nothing, with no one…. Not seeing things the same way; never, nowhere, with no one… No longer knowing what one truly thinks, except that ‘this is not it’.” (Julia Kristeva)

Rupture is the (inevitable) fate of the foreigner; he has left something behind forever, yet it continues to haunt him, and continues in part to shape his identity.

Exile makes a cadaver of the old body, the old language. Migration and diaspora: remembering, disappearing, forgetting, losing, moving, betraying, the crumbling or the evaporation of one’s identity, language, family, culture, history – the extinction of traditions. “It is a matter for wonder: a moment, now here and then gone, nothing before it came, again nothing after it has gone, nonetheless returns as a ghost and disturbs the peace of a later moment.

Life has not always been a bed of roses for Olinda, who has experienced poverty, exile and the assembly line before losing her husband and then her daughter. She never finished primary school in Italy, but she has written a book. The book of her life.

At the age of 14 he went to work down in the mines.

Today he cherishes the memory of all those who struggled in the bowels of the earth in order to extract its riches. For others.

She was born in Belgium in the Turkish community.

Married at 16, she won her freedom and is bringing up her daughter. Who will decide for herself, one day, whether she wants to marry. Tülin has made a film in order to discover and tell her story.

– Democratic Republic of Congo, 50 years of migration

On Tuesday, 1 June the Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism is organising a study day on ”Belgium – Democratic Republic of Congo, 50 years of migration”, to be held at the Atomium. The event is being held on the occasion of the exhibition entitled “Be.Welcome”.

During this information and reflection day, the Centre will, for a variety of historical, political and sociological reasons, focus on a very specific and important wave of migration to Belgium.

from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Belgium: “A study of migration from Congo and its impact on the Congolese presence in Belgium: an analysis of the principal demographic data”. A number of specialists will also seek to shed light on the various facets of migration from DR Congo (history, sociology, demography, etc.).

Project developers in the field will explain the various types of influence which migration from DR Congo has had both in Belgium and abroad.

“The Illiterate”, an auto-biographic narrative by Agota Kristof, a Swiss writer of Hungarian descent, is the starting point of this adventure. The producer Sifiane El Assad, with Palestinian roots, had been impressed by this short text and was convinced of the great pedagocical value of its adaptation for theatre. For that purpose he united a group of motivated individuals. For the interpretation he called on Manuella Ammoun, Maryse Dinsart, Laurence Voreux, Johanne Samek and Marielle Vancamp. The design for the scenography and costums was taken care of by Marielle Vancamp, Valerie Leclercq and Isabelle Jamsin. Géraldine Colin and Corinne Ricuort assumed the coordination and promotion of the project of which Alain Bourgeois was the producer.

Illiterate Alternatively funny, touching and disarming, Agota Kristof, brings in “I read” to life persons popping up out of her memory. She tells about her youth in Hungary, her difficult integration in Switzerland, her motivation to learn French, the language of her host country and about how she managed to become one of the most renown writers of her generation.
