Kabaddi World Cup 2016: The Rebirth Of Ajay Thakur, The Man Who Gave India The Title “I will beat Iran single-handedly” — India’s Manjeet Chhillar recalls teammate Ajay Thakur saying on the morning of the Kabaddi World Cup final. A few hours later, Thakur’s words proved prophetic, as the 30-year-old raider went out on the court and did exactly that. However, while we can applaud the Himachal Pradesh raider for his performance, it does make sense to recall the last few months of his career. He was brought in by the Puneri Paltan during the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), but had to settle for a place on the bench. The in-form Deepak Hooda had taken his place and the Asian Games gold medalist couldn’t force his way back. Injuries also played their part, but Thakur’s loss of form was down to him losing his self-belief. There’s a swagger about him when he goes out to raid today; those who saw him in the World Cup would vouch for it.
But there was no swagger in the PKL; defenders found it easy to trap Thakur. Having scored 122 and 79 raid points in the first two seasons, Thakur managed only 52 and 63 in the next two. And though it was a decent enough tally, it wasn’t enough by his own yardstick. Despite poor form, however, his legacy was too strong for coach Balwan Singh to ignore him, and Thakur was named in the probables for the World Cup. That was his chance to make a revival in his career. It was that chance, that hope of rolling back the old days that got him going. “Kabaddi is a difficult game. It’s very physical, and causes frequent injuries. But when I came for the (India) camp, both the coaches helped me prepare really well. The training helped me get back my touch and I was fortunate to be
a part of the final team,” Ajay said after the win against Iran in the final. “He is a confidence player and the more you motivate him, the better he performs. I have played with him in every season of the PKL and I remember whenever our team needed points, he would go and get them. In the final he did the same, this time for India,” Manjeet told reporters after the game. Ajay fondly remembers the first day of the World Cup, when coach Balwan spoke to him. “The coach came to my room and told me that I was the best, there was no one like me and I can beat any defence in the world. The coach’s motivation helped me a lot,” the 30-year-old revealed. He wasn’t included in the starting line-up for the first game against Korea, but was called upon in a do-
or-die raid to prevent India getting all out. He was subbed in just before he went to raid, and he won India a crucial point. In that one point, he showed glimpses of his old self, and despite that being his only successful raid in the game, it was enough to fuel his belief further. By the time the final came, Thakur already had scored 53 raid points and was on the cusp of becoming the best raider of the tournament. But Iran had other ideas. He and his partner in crime Pardeep Narwal had been given no inch by the Iran defence, and the visitors had a five-point lead with fifteen minutes of the game left. Mighty India were being thwarted in their own backyard, silence in the stadium had moved on to anxiety. Something had to give and the signs weren’t great for the home
side, as Iran were in no mood to relent. Inspiration was required from somewhere, a spark was needed; India craved for one champion to put his hand up. Driven by his own desire for heroism, and bound by his bold claims, Ajay Thakur responded. Leaving his foot as a bait, he triggered an Iranian assault. It was a dangerous thing to do, but not for Ajay Thakur. The tall raider battled his way through the power-packed Iranian challenge and stuck a foot across the half line, and brought India two crucial points. By doing so, he not only trimmed Iran’s lead, he also caused a shift in momentum. Iran lost numbers on court, the crowd got on its back, and Ajay Thakur had his mojo again. (Continued On Page 25)

Documentary Decoding Trend Mukesh Ambani Is Worth More Of Indian American Spelling Than Half Of India’s States Bee Champions In The Making (Continued From Page 01)
(Continued From Page 01) Well, you are not alone. To answer these questions, and some more about these child prodigies, Sam Rega and Chris Weller, two journalists associated with Business Insider Films, are creating a feature-length documentary, called “Breaking The Bee.” The filmmakers, in order to decipher the spelling bee success of Indian American kids, will follow several Indian American children of different ages to learn about their family life, witness them train, explore the ups and downs of chasing a dream, and offer a candid look at what it really takes to become the best, leading up to the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Six-year-old Akash Vukoti, of San Angelo, Texas, who was the youngest competitor in this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee competition, is one of the spelling bee whiz kids to be featured in the documentary. “Breaking the Bee” includes cultural analyses from journalists, sociologists, and anthropologists, particularly those who study Indian American culture. These experts will help illuminate what sparked this spelling trend and how history and culture factor into the kids’ success. The documentary will also feature insights from media and entertainment personalities, along with a variety of past winners and their
parents, and key individuals from Scripps.

It is painful to lose someone you loved. To compromise his heart refused. Strove to find him, his master, Searched every nook and corner. Diwali
(Continued From Page 01)
One of the major festivals of Hinduism, it spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Its celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings in the communities and countries where it is observed. The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika in Bikram Sambat calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November. Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes and offices. On Diwali night, people dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family puja (prayers) typically to Lakshmi – the goddess of fertility and prosperity. NAAO ENDORSES...
(Continued from page1) Subsequent to the forum, the NAAO PAC discussed the different candidates and decided on the following endorsements based on a 2/3 super-majority voting method. All the candidates, including incumbents running for reelection, bring unique talents to bear on the positions that they are contending for. Following are the candidates the NAAO PAC is endorsing: City of Austin Proposition 1: The NAAO PAC unequivocally endorses Proposition 1, commonly referred to as the Mobility Bond. It offers the opportunity to resolve many of Austin’s congestion problems, thus leading to more efficient transportation, higher quality of life for all who use Austin’s roads, and greater safety for pedestrians and bicycle riders. Austin City Council District 2: Ms. Delia Garza Ms. Delia Garza and Mr. Wesley Walker attended the forum mentioned above. The NAAO PAC endorses Ms. Garza for the City Council District 2 seat. In the 2 years that Ms. Garza has served on the City Council, she has become one of the most prominent and vocal council members. She’s an avid proponent of gender equality and has worked diligently to strengthen the city’s discrimination complaint policies. Ms. Garza has helped bring a number of new health benefits to city employees, such as, allowing more part-time employees to be eligible for health insurance, and advocated for increased health and human services funding to assist low income residents. In addition, she has continually sided with efforts to increase affordability which is a key concern among citizens throughout the city. Austin City Council District 4: Mr. Gregorio Casar and Mr. Louis Herrin III were 2 of the candidates for this council seat who attended the forum. The NAAO PAC endorses Mr. Casar for reelection to represent City Council District 4 based
on his record of success in the past 2 years. Casar has continued to be a steadfast advocate of workers’ rights in line with his previous experience as an organizer and spokesman for the Workers Defense Project. He was the lead sponsor of a “fair chance” ordinance (the first in a Southern city) intended to provide more equitable job opportunities for people with criminal records. One of his key achievements has been in the adoption of body cameras by the Austin Police Department. He is particularly interested in affordable housing, an area he expects to apply greater focus in 2017. Finally, his appointments to boards and commissions ensure broad representation and reflect his attention to all ethnic minorities such as the Asian American community. Austin City Council District 6: Mr. Jimmy Flannigan Mr. Don Zimmerman, the current incumbent in this council seat, and Mr. Jimmy Flannigan attended this forum. The NAAO PAC endorses Mr. Flannigan for City Council District 6. Since his last run for this seat, Mr. Flannigan has consistently engaged the residents of District 6 on a range of issues important to them. He initiated the formation of the Northwest Austin Coalition (NWAC), a citizen group focused on identifying areas with congestion, safety and other problems in NW Austin. Among his focus areas, he is particularly passionate about affordability and in diversifying the economy of Austin to create more middle- class jobs. This includes better coordination with local school districts (including Round Rock and Leander ISDs) and ACC to provide workforce development opportunities to support a diversified economy. Austin City Council District 7: Ms. Leslie Pool Of the 2 candidates, Natalie Gauldin and Leslie Pool, who are contending for this seat and also attended this forum, the NAAO PAC endorses Ms. Leslie Pool for City Council District 7. Ms.
Pool has been a forceful advocate for the city and her district, and has been a steadfast friend of the Asian American community. Austin City Council District 10: Ms. Sheri Gallo Ms. Sheri Gallo, the incumbent City Council member for District 10 and Ms. Alison Alter, her challenger, attended the forum. The NAAO PAC endorses Ms. Gallo for City Council District 10.
Austin South Asian | November 2016 Ms. Gallo’s areas of focus are evident in the committees she has served on, including chair of the Austin Energy Utility Oversight Committee, vice chair of Mobility, and the Housing and Community Development and Planning and Neighborhoods committees, among others. Ms. Gallo has frequently promoted increased housing that is distributed throughout the city to enable residents to be close to their workplaces. She has communicated effectively with her constituents through regular updates to keep residents informed and connected. Travis County
Commissioner Precinct 3: Mr. Gerald Daugherty Mr. Gerald Daugherty, the sitting Travis County Commissioner for Precinct 3, and Mr. David Holmes, his challenger, attended the forum. Austin’s Nida Elley A Part Of Austenistan By Sumaiya Malik Sahar Ali for AADI - excerpts When Jane Austen’s 200th death anniversary rolls around in 2017, a gaggle of Pakistani Jane-ites - female fans who fawn over all things Austen – are commemorating the event a la Austen – with a book. Austenistan is an anthology of short stories inspired by the Regency writer’s books, characters and milieu. More importantly, this book will present a more plural image of Pakistan. The ‘land of Austen’ which is what Austenistan means, literally, is a country teeming with scheming women, meddlesome matchmakers, and confident young women who can speak their mind, just like the colorful characters that populate an Austen novel.
Austin based pedagog, writing coach, and a writer herself. AADI caught up with her amidst her blogging, teaching and mothering her elementary schooler, to ask Elley about Austen and Austenistan. How did you get started on reading Austen? I was about 12 years old when my father gave me the gift of Pride and Prejudice. I was already an avid reader and writer at that time, and my father, who was similarly literary in his tastes, thought it was just the right time for me to experience Jane Austen. He was right! I was blown away… the language made Austen’s world even more enticing because it really did feel like I was entering an altogether new world.
Says the eloquent editor of the book, Austenistan is a fun way to gain insight into various aspects of Pakistani society: from family values to social snobbery to superstitions to the all-encompassing wedding season, complete with vivid portrayals and whimsical details.
Did you see any parallels between the world Austen wrote about and your own life? Please elaborate!
Austin’s pride
I was already a storyteller and a hopeless romantic.
In a linguistic twist, Austenistan has an Austin connection. One of its contributors is Nida Elley, an
I don’t think I found parallels in my youth; it was more about how Austen inspired me to become the person I am today.
But while I was growing up, societal expectations made me think
more about my career and going into a profession that would be more lucrative and “realistic” than writing. Despite the fact that it took me about 11 years to get there - I went full circle in my journey, from creative writing to genetic engineering to psychology to journalism and, finally, back to creative writing. I could relate to how difficult it can be for a woman to be herself in societies (both American and Pakistani) that are pushing you in particular directions. How relevant do you think Austen is to the lives of Pakistani women today, those that live in Pakistan and those that don’t, and what can we learn from her books? The world Austen’s characters inhabited in the English landscapes of the Regency era are, surprisingly, very similar to traditional Pakistani society. We still have strong family loyalties and expectations, a desire for our girls to be married off to the most eligible bachelors, a life in which gossiping, drinking tea, and going to balls are the luxurious pastimes of the elite, men who are gentlemanly yet overbearing, and women who must fight for what they truly want. Antarctica’s Ice Sheets Are Melting Faster — And From Beneath Antarctica’s ice has been melting, most likely because of a warming climate. Now, newly published research shows the rate of melting appears to be accelerating.
Although the shelves float, they’re still connected to the mainland. The point at which the ice shelf is no longer supported by bedrock is called the “grounding line.”
tom of the shelves melt, the more ice is exposed to warm water. “It becomes a runaway process,” he explains, “which makes it unstable.”
Antarctica is bigger than the U.S. and Mexico combined, and it’s covered in deep ice — more than a mile deep in some places. Most of the ice sits on bedrock, but it slowly flows off the continent’s edges. Along the western edge, giant glaciers creep down toward the sea. Where they meet the ocean, they form ice shelves.
A team from JPL has been studying that grounding line in several places along the edge of the West Antarctic ice sheet. They used radar to look beneath the ice. In particular, overflights have targeted ice shelves along the West Antarctic ice sheet known as the Amundsen Sea Embayment.
Where’s the warmer water coming from? The team, whose findings appear in the journal Nature Communications, points to global warming that’s heating up the oceans. There’s been a spate of research lately showing that Antarctic ice is melting faster than previously thought — and raising global sea levels.
The shelves are the specialty of Ala Khazendar, a geophysicist and polar expert at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. “You have this floating plate of ice being fed by the glaciers flowing from the interior of the continent,” he says, “while having ocean water underneath it.” He calls the shelves “the gates of Antarctica.”
They’ve found that the ice is melting faster than they’ve ever seen. The researchers believe the cause is warm water circulating beneath the ice shelf. The melting was most pronounced from 2002 to 2009. (The influx of warmer water to the region stalled recently, and the rate of melting seems to have slowed somewhat.) Khazendar says the more the bot-
Khazendar says the melting process appears to be irreversible. Polar scientists fear that at some point, the shelves will collapse and Antarctica’s glaciers will flow into the sea. As to whether and when that might happen? “The simple answer is we don’t know. And that’s the scary part,” Khazendar says.
• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F • Using a rolling pin, crush the aniseed • Place the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and mix • Transfer the dry ingredients into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the aniseed, sugar and honey • Add the butter and milk, using the whisk attachment, mix for 5 minutes • Line a loaf pan with parchment paper, then pour in the batter. Spread evenly and press down with a fork; bake for 55 minutes • Test for doneness; the tip of a knife inserted into the center should come out clean • Cool on a rack, then transfer to a serving platter Another delightful French twist to your Thanksgiving feast is Chestnut stuffing. Simply add roasted and chopped chestnuts to your usual stuffing recipe for an elegant French touch. Your turkey and stuffing pairs well with Pinot Noir. How Boomers Are Disrupting The Housing Market
As the Boomer population ages and retires, massive shifts in the housing market are to be expected. One current popular trend with these older Americans is manufactured housing in land-lease communities, where homes are placed on leased land and the overall price of the home is lower than other types of homes. And many of these communities offer senior-friendly amenities. “While land-lease communities are popular with people of all ages, those over 55 may particularly appreciate the affordability and lifestyle benefits they deliver,” says Richard Jennison, president and CEO of the Manufactured Housing Institute. Manufactured homes can cost an
average of $68,000, compared with
percent less per square foot than
is a significant factor to consider. Additionally, such homes are quite easy to customize over time in order to meet the changing needs and abilities of an individual. Furthermore, many land-lease communities on which manufactured homes are situated are dedicated to those over 55 years old, and some come with amenities like community clubhouses with scheduled activities, exercise facilities, swimming pools and lakes for boating and fishing. Boomers and retirees who are anticipating less mobility in the years to come are finding communities with “everything at their fingertips” to be a built-in defense against isolation, and a convenient and practical alternative to a con-
ventional neighborhood. Well-groomed grounds, and nice landscaping, common to these communities, can provide convenience to those possibly unable of doing their own yardwork. Information about these types of manufactured homes and communities can be found at facebook. com/Manufactured-Housing-Institute. “If you are looking for a home in which to age-in-place, don’t rule out a manufactured home in a landlease community,” says Jennison. “They offer a neighborly environment with a strong sense of community.”

Diwali (Continued From Page 06) After puja, fireworks follow, then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends. Deepavali also marks a major shopping period in nations where it is celebrated. The name of festive days as well as the rituals of Diwali vary significantly among Hindus, based on the region of India. In many parts of India, the festivities start with Dhanteras (in Northern and Western part of India), followed by Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Deepavali on the third day, Diwali Padva dedicated to wife–husband relationship on the fourth day, and festivities end with Bhai Dooj dedicated to sister–brother bond on the fifth day. Dhanteras usually falls eighteen days after Dussehra. On the same night that Hindus celebrate Diwali, Jains celebrate a festival also called Diwali to mark the attainment of moksha by Mahavira, Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas to mark the release of Guru Hargobind from a Mughal Empire prison, and Newar Buddhists, unlike the majority of Buddhists, celebrate Diwali by worshipping Lakshmi.

Hassan for College Board
(Continued from page 1) Voters in most of Travis County and virtually half of Williamson up to Leander are eligible to vote in the Austin Community College Board Trustee election.
Sean was endorsed by the Austin Chronicle, who stated: “A threeway race with a clear winner.... Sean Hassan stands out from the field for his passion, insight, and commitment to practical solutions to access and enrollment issues.” Sean is a graduate of Stanford and the London School of Economics, who has spent nearly a decade as a professional in the field of education and youth development, most recently as a Vice-President with the Boys & Girls Clubs. For Sean, improving our public Community College system is personal – his mom spent 15 years working in a Laundromat as Sean
was growing up, until she had the opportunity to attend a public job training program to become a nurse’s aid and then a vocational nurse. His mom’s becoming a nurse transformed their lives – it was the first time they had a predictable, living wage in their home.
Sean is running to serve on the ACC Board to reduce the barriers that prevent ACC students from graduating on time or at all and the discourage others from enrolling at ACC in the first place and to deepen and broaden ties with the business community so that more ACC students are exposed to the skills they will need for the jobs of the future. Though Sean has been endorsed by the Chair of the Texas Democratic Party Chair, the Travis and Williamson County Democratic Parties, and every single Demo-
cratic club, including the Austin Environmental Democrats, Austin Progressive Coalition, and Stonewall Democrats and 11 others, the Austin Community College Board Trustee race is non-partisan. So, for those voting straight ticket, you still have to find Sean’s name on the ballot to cast a vote for him. There are other good Democrats and progressives running for other seats on the ACC Board – Sean is the only one running in Place 4. If you would like to learn more about Sean and his platform visit his website, seanforacc.com or his Facebook page: @seanforacc. I’ll be voting for Sean – I encourage you to do the same.

naao ENDORSes..... (continued from page 7) for the past two decades. He applies his 40-year experience as a businessman and entrepreneur to carefully crafting public policy knowing well how it affects the public and personal lives of the citizen in this community. Travis County District Attorney: Ms. Margaret Moore Ms. Margaret Moore and Ms. Maura Phelan both attended the forum as candidates for Travis County District Attorney. The NAAO PAC endorses Ms. Margaret Moore for the position of Travis County DA. Ms. Moore brings with her an impressive resume over 30 years. In her most recent position, she served as Assistant Attorney General and handled complex lawsuits against corporations that had exploited Texas Medicaid, diverting hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars intended to fund health care for our most vulnerable citizens. She was the lead counsel in a highly significant jury trial that resulted in $180-million judgment against a pharmaceutical company. In 1980, Moore was elected Travis County Attorney. In that position, she strengthened DWI enforcement, dramatically improved the tax collection system for Travis County and played a key role in expanding the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Margaret is licensed both in the State of Texas and in federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court. Travis County Sheriff: Ms. Sally Hernandez Sally Hernandez is a highly gifted and qualified candidate for this position. She is a longtime Austin resident and is currently serving as Constable of Travis County Precinct 3. Throughout her campaign, she has enunciated a clear sense of vision and priorities on law enforcement that demonstrates strong empathy for the mentally ill. Hernandez has championed body cameras for her officers, in-person visitation for her inmates, and a desire to prioritize prosecution of violent criminals over those cited for petty drug possessions. She is an effective communicator and firmly believes that ICE has no space in county jails.
The NAAO PAC endorses Ms. Sally Hernandez for the position of Travis County Sheriff. State Representative District 46: Abstain The NAAO PAC chooses to abstain from endorsing any candidates in this race. State Representative District 47: Mr. Paul Workman Among the two very qualified candidates for this seat, the NAAO PAC endorses Mr. Paul Workman for reelection as State Representative for District 47. Mr. Workman has 40 years of experience in the construction industry and brings his business savvy to his role as a state representative. Workman has been active in several civic organizations, including Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse. In 2008 he served as Chairman of the Board of the Texas Building Branch of the Associated General Contractors. He believes economic expansion and natural preservation can be achieved simultaneously. He supports higher spending on education, a topic that is near and dear to all Austin citizens, particularly the Asian American community. State Representative District 49: Ms. Gina Hinojosa The NAAO PAC endorses Ms. Gina Hinojosa for the position of State Representative for District 49. In 2012, the civil rights attorney joined the AISD Board of Trustees in the Position 8 At-Large seat. A year later, she was voted by her fellow trustees to become board vice-president, then president in 2015. This experience gives her the unique qualification to be education’s voice on the inside, given that sweeping and muchdelayed reforms are expected to be enacted by the Texas Legislature in 2017. Hinojosa is already prepared for this effort since she was part of an unprecedented coalition of trustees, districts, and chambers of commerce in 2015 that put new pressure on the Legislature to fend off conservative initiatives to expand on charter schools and voucher programs to solve the crisis in secondary school education in Texas.

Austin’s Nida Elley A Part Of Austenistan
(Continued From Page 07)
I think every reader will learn something different from each of Austen’s books, but for me, the main takeaway has been; although societal restrictions and etiquette have their place, when it comes to what you truly want, go after it with single-mindedness and passion. How did you get involved in the Austenistan project? Laaleen Ali, the editor of Austenistan, happened to be my cousin’s childhood best friend. Unbeknownst to me, she had also read some of my writing online, and asked me if I wanted to be part of this project she was putting together. I jumped at the chance. I think it reminded me of how significant Austen was in my literary and personal development. It also got me motivated to write, at a time when work and family life seemed to be overshadowing everything else. Austenistan comes out in 2017. We in Austin can hardly wait!
Jiaa Jabbar, who is now known to host community events, is taking Diwali to the next level after having a successful Henna night. Jiaa is excited about the line up and there is so much of family fun planned. The evening will begin early at 4 p.m. with kids dances and stalls with latest clothing and henna designs. She is a finalist from Saregamapa. More news was pouring in about the family fun Diwali event right when we were going to the press… Karma Radio will be the media parther. Mindy Kaling In Austin At The Teen Book Festival
By Sumaiya Malik On Saturday, October 1, comedian Mindy Kaling of hit TV series, The Office, and more recently “The Mindy Project” came as a speaker at the Texas Teen Book Festival at St. Edwards University. Kaling discussed her comedic memoirs with Sarah Pitre of Alamo Drafthouse and Forever YA Book Club.

Mindy also spoke fondly about her breakthrough into the world or theater. Matt & Ben, a play written by Mindy and her best friend Brenda Withers played in off-off Broadway in theaters in 2003, was conceived when the two friends were trying to make things work in NYC and had found nothing remotely related to what they liked to do in the theater or cinema.
Wearing a cute black sleevless top and skirt and hair loosly tossed to the side, Mindy looked radiant and relaxed and talked about her work related experiences as well as fond memories of growing up. Vera Mindy Chokalingam, professionally known as Mindy Kaling, was born to Indian immigrant parents. Her mom was a physician and dad an architect and they lived in Massachusettes where Mindy went to a private school school. Her parents she said were strict

In 2011, Mindy penned the comedic memoir Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns), which continues to be featured on New York Times’ and USA Today’s best-seller lists. The coming-of-age, teen-friendly
memoir invites readers on a tour of Mindy’s life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood. Her 2015 follow-up, Why Not Me? turns from the insecurities of her youth to the even more profound concerns of being a single thirtysomething. Mindy gave heart-felt advice to her listeners at St. Edwards University. She said she was fortunate to have parents who wanted her to make it big in anyway she chose and were supportive and backed her up. She in return was equally close to them and shared all her grievances and successes with them. This was sound advice for teens and me who have growing children who are not sure how much to share with parents.

Stop Press! Zoe Viccaji And Shallum Xavier Rock The House At The Sahara Lounge

people and yes we love to take the credit.
So when this year a small off beat opportunity came up to play to a different crowd in Austin, Shallum did not hesitate one bit. He invited well-known Pakistani singer, Zoe Viccaji, to try the local club scene. The Sahara Lounge is really a quaint little local club scene.

Tu c k e d in the depths of East Austin, this shack like structure and its unpaved parking lot would mostly go unnoticed if it were not for the famous musicians who come to per-
form there.
The place has a unique culture with a tiny floor embedded within a wooden room with wood posts supporting a low ceiling. Chili lights adorn the walls and vintage curtains here and there with odds and ends for trimmings grab your attention for a second as your eyes begin to scan the surroundings in dim light. One can understand why wellknown musicians would want to perform here. This is the place where a true musician can feel the pulse of the crowd. Shallum said, “ We were wearing our creative shoes and most of the performance was improvised… there were many moments throughout our set list where we spontaneously took the music forward.”
Zoe with the comfort of Shallum as her experienced guitarist was on the roll.
She had the audience clapping, swooning and literally jumping and singing along with her own hit songs and those of Nazia Hasan. A die-hard fan of Nazia, Zoe Viccaji looked radiant when singing her favorite star’s songs. Her own deep voice appealed to the bigger American crowd rather than just those of Pakistani origin. Zoe was having fun! Perhaps it was because her best friend, Sanam Saeed, the Pakistani television sensation and star of Zindagi Gulzar Hay, was present to give her best friend support. Sanam Saeed and Zoe Viccaji, two successful stars of Pakistan shone through the evening and humbly accepted all requests for selfies.
The evening went on to another performance by an Iranian singer. Many stayed and most left trying to get their own pictures with the stars. Shallum enjoyed the whole scene during the performance. He said, “The feedback from the audience was incredible energy booster… As far as I am concerned such intimate sessions are important to develop a strong bond with fans and all music lovers.” He hopes to come back to Austin soon and knowing him and his fans, something will already be in the works soon. The Austin-South Asian wishes Zoe Viccaji, Shallum Xavier and Sanam Saeed a safe journey back home.

Simple Steps To Protect Your Family From Fire, Carbon Monoxide And Other Threats
While life can be complicated, sometimes the simple solutions are the best ones, particularly when it comes to protecting your family from household hazards. The “Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries” program espouses that philosophy.
For the 29th consecutive year, the campaign led by the Energizer brand and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, has reminded families of the life-saving habit of changing and testing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when most of the country sets their clocks back at the end of daylight saving time. This year, that is November 6. A whopping 50 percent of home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have non-working

Safety advocates say preparing your family is crucial. Make sure everyone, especially children, knows what your alarms and detectors sound like and what to do if they go off.
A critical yet simple safety practice is to keep flashlights with fresh batteries at your bedside for help in finding your way out of your house and signaling for help in the event of a fire or other emergency. Also, keep a stash of high-quality 9V, C, D and AA batteries to power vital safety devices whenever necessary. For long-term protection, opt for batteries designed to prevent damaging leaks, like Energizer Max and Ultimate Lithium batteries. Inspire creativity and foster fine motor skills with gifts for budding young artists. Watercolor sets, finger paint, stencils and markers are great age-appropriate selections. Just be sure any art supplies are non-toxic and washable.
Consider the Go! Go! Smart Wheels Treasure Mountain Train Adventure, which allows kids to discover spatial play by building train tracks, and features its first motorized train that can climb hills on its own.
A great gift set idea? A blank smock and fabric paint -- kids can design their own artist’s smock, which will inspire them to do even more art projects in the future. Offer to hang or frame your children’s favorite creations so they can proudly see them on display.
When the train is placed over one of the nine “SmartPoint” locations on the playset, it will respond with lights, sounds and music.
Thoughtful Toys preschoolers are those that inspire imaginative play. “Gift-giving for this age group should reflect the tremendous opportunity that play time offers for supporting early childhood de-

Last year I tried to grow sampling different varieties of okra. They did well but not enough production. Saved the seeds of two types 1) Spineless Green 2) Burgundy Red. Planted this year those seeds 50 feet long three rows on well prepared soil with compost and other organic nutrients in April. Plants started growing vigorously with sufficient rains this year during spring. These are annual self pollinating pants.

Keeping Kids Safe This Halloween
Parents should map out a well-lit trick-or-treating route in advance of Halloween and accompany kids on the journey. All the streets you visit should have a sidewalk or safe walking area. If you will be trick-or-treating after sundown, stick to costumes that are brightly colored or reflective. Travel in groups with other friends and family, and remember to skip houses with the porch light off -that’s a signal that these homes are
When you get back home, parents should inspect candy right away before letting kids dig into their stash. While Halloween is one of the most joyous holidays for children, it’s important to follow a few basic safety guidelines. (SPM Wire)

How To Make A Successful Offer In Today’s Housing Market
Prospective homebuyers can get encouraged by the current market. Nearly 68 percent of homes sales today are to individual buyers compared to 53 percent in 2011
But you can take steps to increase your chances of success,” says Chris Bowden, senior vice president of HomeSteps, the real estate sales division of Freddie Mac.
hunting, fully understanding your finances is critical to helping you determine your price limit and whether your budget can cover necessary upgrades, as well as monthly expenses for general upkeep and utilities, which can run hundreds of dollars monthly.
Always ask the seller for a home warranty as part of your initial offer.
• Act fast. When home inventory is low, the sooner you can make an offer, the better.
Set your offer apart from the competition by including a letter to the seller, or offer the seller the ability to rent back their home for some period of time after closing.
Get pre-approved if you know you’ll need a mortgage to buy. It will help you act fast and make a confident offer. • Make a solid offer. A strong offer will be comparable with other sales and listings in the neighborhood. when investor and cash deals were at their peak. Still, competition for housing is hot. “In a competitive market, your offer may be one of many.
The experts at HomeSteps and Bowden are offering homebuyers five important tips for making an offer in today’s market: • Understand your finances. While it’s not nearly as fun as house
A licensed real estate agent who is active in the neighborhoods you’re considering will be instrumental in helping you put in a solid offer based on recent sales of similar homes, the condition of the house and what you can afford.
That way, you’ll be covered if appliances or mechanicals fail or break down after you’re in the home.
This can be your chance to connect beyond just dollars. Talk to your agent about other ways to make your offer resonate. • Prepare to negotiate. Be prepared for counteroffers. The two things most likely to be negotiated are the selling price and closing date. Given that, you’ll be glad you did your homework first to understand how much you can afford.
Your agent will aid the negotiation process, giving you guidance on the counteroffer and making sure that the agreed-to contract terms are met. • Get a home inspection. Once you’ve signed the purchase contract, always get an independent home inspection so you know the true condition of the home. If the inspection uncovers undisclosed problems you can typically re-negotiate the terms or cancel the contract. More tips, insights and homebuying resources can be found by visiting myhome.freddiemac.com. While house hunting is fun, homebuying should not be taken lightly. For best results, get prepared. Smart strategies can help you make a successful offer on a property. (StatePoint)

More Parents Saving More Money For College
The number of parents saving for college and the amounts they are saving are both at four-year highs, according to “How America Saves for College 2016,” a recent national study by Sallie Mae and conducted by Ipsos. The new report reveals that 57 percent of today’s parents are saving for college, up from 48 percent in 2015, and the average amount saved is $16,380, up from $10,040 the year prior. In this climate of increased savings, over half of all parents feel confident they’ll be able to meet college costs, and the vast majority of parents who have set a savings goal are confident they’ll meet their goal. “These higher levels of optimism, confidence, and savings correspond with other economic trends we’re seeing, such as declines in unemployment and increased optimism about the economy among the U.S. public,” says Julia Clark, senior vice president, Ipsos Public
Affairs. Here are some of the reports key findings: Millennials Most Committed Millennial parents -- age 35 or younger -- feel more confident than other generations about meeting college costs, and they’re more committed to saving for college.

When it comes to paying for college, a greater percentage of Millennial parents believe the parent should be solely responsible compared to their Gen X and Baby Boomer counterparts. How To Give Holiday Gifts That Won’t Be Forgotten Community Engagement At The Asian American Resource Center
If your holiday shopping list is focused on all the latest trends, remember, the hottest items are not always the most cherished. Sometimes it’s the warmest gifts that are the most unforgettable. “The holi-
days are times of nostalgia and remembrance, from stories of when we were children to the smell of cookies baking in the oven,” says Christopher Warnack, vice president of marketing and visual at Things Remembered, a leading personalized gift retailer. “Likewise, the gifts you give are
not just objects to enjoy now; they should create a joyful memory that can be cherished for years.” To this end, Warnack recommends personalizing gifts with a loved one’s name, a monogram, a shared
memory, a thoughtful message or an inside joke. “Something that makes it just for them, and only from you,” he says. For a seasonal gift to mark the passing years, consider a personalized ornament or snow globe. Your gift recipient can look back on the ornaments received each year and
be reminded of those holiday memories. Above all, remember to take into consideration the style, hobbies and favorite colors of your gift recipient. You can customize a gift for anyone on your list. Scarves or jewelry personalized just for her can be enjoyed for years, and with her monogram, become a real statement piece.
For him, consider mugs, apparel and other gear that commemorates his favorite sports team, and are sure to become part of his gameday traditions and celebrations. Personalized toys, stuffed animals and other snuggly gifts are great for kids. Seek out gifts at retailers that specialize in customized items, such as Things Remembered, which can create one-of-akind gifts in an about an hour (and a little longer for embroidery and other specialized techniques). For more unforgettable gift inspiration, visit ThingsRemembered.com. “Everyone remembers the best gift they ever received,” says Warnack. Make someone’s season by giving gifts that create new and happy memories with the people you care about the most.(StatePoint)

Flavorful Recipes To Upgrade Your Holiday Feast This holiday season, hospitality industry veterans, such as Andy Seymour—a top bar educator—are encouraging hosts to use Port wine as the focal point of their festivities in both food and drink menus. “Port’s depth of flavor and versatility in style brings so much to the palate. You will find endless ways to use it
& Tonic, which consists of one part white port and one part tonic, served over ice and topped with a lemon twist or mint leaf. This simple cocktail will whet guests’ palates, and also pairs perfectly with a festive dish—traditionally served in the Douro region of Portugal, port’s ancestral home—called “Bolinhos de Bacalhau.”
Drain the cod, rinse, and put it in a large pan. Simmer gently over medium-low heat for 20 to 25 minutes, until the cod is tender and flakes beautifully. Drain and rinse well, then flake the cod into a bowl with your hands, removing any bones and skin. • Peel the potatoes, bring to boil until soft and mash. • Add the cod to the potatoes, along with the onion, garlic, parsley and eggs.
And more recently port has become an ingredient which at-home mixologists as well as bartenders around the country are using in new and delicious ways. “It’s an exquisite traditional afterdinner sipper, and it can be used in an endless number of cocktails,” continues Seymour. Start the evening off with a light and easy-to-make crowd pleaser like the Fonseca Siroco White Port
• 2 lbs. of dried salt cod • 4 medium potatoes (Maris Piper) • 1 large Spanish onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 handful fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped • 2 large eggs • Freshly ground salt and pepper • Vegetable oil, for frying Prep: • Soak the dried cod in cold water for 24 to 48 hours, changing the water several times to remove the majority of the salt.
The team had put its faith in the raider from Himachal Pradesh, and he didn’t disappoint. He had tasted blood and was hungry for more. The Iranians were slightly wary of him, and Thakur used that to his advantage.
• Take the mixture and form either balls or quenelles. Place them in the refrigerator for a couple hours before frying.
Ending the evening with 11 raid points, Thakur had rescued his side from a tight situation and put India

Favorites, such as Taylor Fladgate 20 Year Old Tawny Porto, make for a perfect digestif.
“We knew we could get back into the game. In kabaddi, a five-point lead is nothing and with Ajay in such a good form, we believed that we could win the game,” captain Anup Kumar said in the postmatch press conference.
He went on the attack and was looking to score in every raid. Much to India’s good fortune, he was able to do exactly that.
In addition to White Port, several other varieties mix nicely in cocktails, including Fonseca Bin 27 Reserve Ruby Port and Croft Reserve Tawny Port. Another easy-to-make recipe is:

Kabaddi World Cup 2016: The Rebirth Of Ajay Thakur, The Man Who Gave India The Title

on the pinnacle of world kabaddi once again. The match-winner was back. Ajay Thakur was reborn. “The game changed a lot and I feel the Thakur turned it single-handedly and we won the match because of him,” Kumar said. As the star athlete tried to deflect away from the gathering and give credit to the team, Kumar, sitting in front of him, shook his head, rejected his claims and pointed a finger straight at the 30-year-old, showing the gathered press who the real hero was. The greatest joy for the nation was obviously lifting the World Cup, but if anything came close to that feeling, it was seeing the rebirth of one of India’s greatest ever kabaddi players.
Google Photos Now Shows Full Albums In Search Results
In its latest version, Google Photos has introduced some big updates, most notably support for creating animation through videos. However, the update has also brought the ability to search full albums as well. The app now allows users to search not only photos, but old album folders as well. Earlier, the app searched for photos inside albums using object recognition and search keyword, but did not show the entire album as a search result. However, Android Police now reports that the latest version brings this ability, and the album search result is enabled on the desktop version as well.
The author claims that this feature could be a server-side rollout, as he had to force close Google Photos and clear all data to get this feature working. As mentioned, Google Photos got a big update across platforms earlier this month. Users can upload images or videos to Photos app on
Android and iOS, as well as from desktop that will be made into shareable animations that will include interesting segments. Google says that the new features don’t require the user to do anything manually as it is done through machine learning in Google Photos. When Google Photos is ready with the new animations or with a new collection of favourite images, it will start showing Cards under the Assistant tab of Google Photos. The update also gave Google Photos the ability to automatically put images right side up when it finds images in collection that are sideways. In the recent times, Google has become increasingly focused on making its Photos service better and more competitive. Google Photos is available in the App Store and Play Store for free download, and you can even sideload it using APKMirror.

script, everything has been thought out. Between action and cut - that’s the life you live. I am too lazy to become a method actor or go into the entire process of living a part. I did that with ‘Rockstar’, as that’s the only film that demanded it, considering I don’t have any connect with music. I can’t sing or play an instrument. I had to prep for it. Other than that, I really haven’t surrendered to a character so much. Karan, given that the film is so personal, you must have emotionally invested the most in this?

Today, Ranbir Kapoor is a close friend of mine. He is a decade younger to me, but we talk like friends. He doesn’t talk up to me and I don’t talk down to him.

Ranbir Kapoor: The Reason For Me Being An Actor Is Karan Johar And Shah Rukh Khan’s Films
It takes one to sparkle the other. The gemstone needs the facets of the storyteller. The jeweller needs a stone to polish into his weaving of stories. They complete each other. So for Karan Johar, life comes a full circle after growing up on Rishi Kapoor’s histrionics in ‘Chandni’ and for Ranbir Kapoor, it’s back to playing the eternal lover after a series of experimental frames in tepidity. While for Karan, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ (‘ADHM’) was “liberating”, Ranbir was “deeply moved”. The two are a crackling combo, like you will just find out. So read on for a fiery, witty, candid dialogue. With coffee, confessions and more... Ranbir, you have said that you play Karan Johar in the film. Is it true? RK: Well, Karan had a very personal connect to the story and my
the story, I was deeply moved and I knew that I wanted to do it — apart from the fact that he is Karan Johar and every actor wants to work with him. ity. It is not a film that will question your morality, but your sense of love. Ranbir, are you the kind of actor who goes very deep into the character of your film? To the point of isolating yourself to prep for a role? RK: No, I think it all comes from the filmmaker. Everything is in the
KJo: Well, I have come to a juncture where I am making a personal film and I also feel the most liberated. It takes a phase in your life for you to really tackle your inner self and tell a story. Before that you have so many layers, sometimes you are acting, sometimes you are putting up pretences within the industry and saying things because you are expected to. Finally, at 44, I have reached a point where two things happen - either you hit a mid-life crisis or you feel liberated. So when I am asked why I am dancing on a reality show, why I am pouting in a selfie - it doesn’t matter to me. I feel alive, active
Karan, do you want to act again? KJo: Can you please tell the whole world out there that I really want to act again? So what if it didn’t work the first time? I am not being offered any roles. RK: What kind of characters would you like to play Karan? Like, would you play Rajat Kapoor’s role in ‘Kapoor & Sons’ (Since 1921)? KJo: Yes, I would, though I think I’m a little young for it. Nobody is coming to me with these roles. I want to refuse a role at least once in my life; I am not being given that option. I want to act in one hit film and then maybe I will retire. the content to meet the sky high expectations? The fact of the intriguing trailer of ‘Kashmora’ garnering 5 million views explains the amount of expectations on this film. The ‘Baahubali’ or ‘Magadheera’ kind of visuals, the periodic setup, Karthi’s terrific bald look, the ‘Mystery Man’ character which has still been kept under wraps, Nayanthara’s royal looks and the high production values shown in the promos contributed to the high expectations on this October 28 release.
