Improve Your Backyard Life With These Lawn Care Tips

The backyard is one of the most popular spots of the home to relax, host and have fun. However, it all starts with a beautiful lawn.

• Loosen the soil a few inches deep. If it’s hard and dry, add fresh topsoil.

Gently rake them into the soil.

• Lightly cover the area with straw to hold in moisture and keeps birds from snacking.

If you’re in the weeds -- literally -- there are great resources available to help you tackle lawn care so you can make the most of your outdoor spaces and have a better overall outdoor experience.

• Water it and keep it damp at all times. • Sprouts will appear soon! But wait a few weeks before mowing.

One place that can help you get started is Exmark’s Backyard Life site. Exmark, a leading manufacturer of lawn care equipment, created this multimedia destination to provide homeowners with everything from barbecue recipes and design tips to gardening and lawn care advice.

Experts also say that ongoing maintenance is essential to keeping that lawn looking great. “One of the worst things you’ll have to fight, no matter what type of grass you have, is weeds,” says Exmark partner Brian Latimer, a professional angler and yard fanatic. “And you’ll have to fight weeds all year.” To ensure a lush, healthy lawn, Latimer offers these additional weed-fighting and green-up tips:

The fourth episode in the Exmark Original “Backyard Smart” video series, offers the following steps for repairing bare spots in the lawn: • Remove dead grass and weeds,

• Next, sow seeds that match your lawn type.

• Now, feed that new grass using a granular

What’s more, ants, roaches and stinging insects are well-equipped at finding food and shelter in and around your home, and they are smarter than you may think.

For example, Zevo Ant, Roach and Fly Multi-Insect Trigger Spray works on a broad range of household bugs using lemongrass oil and geraniol as active ingredients.

• Safeguard entry points: Pests enter the home most typically through windows, doors and the garage.

• Don’t feed the insects: Without proper precautions, your home could inadvertently be the most popular insect buffet in town.

To that end, patch any holes or tears in screen doors and windows, or better yet, replace them entirely. Keep doors, windows and the garage otherwise closed.

To ensure you’re feeding just your family and not a parade of bugs, keep surfaces free of crumbs and residue.

• Drain the swamp: Standing water can quickly become a breeding ground for mos-

ing bugs doesn’t need to put you out of house and home for hours or even minutes. Today, there are effective ways to kill bugs using friendly ingredients.

Zevo sprays are deadly to bugs and safe for use around people and pets when used as directed, making them a year-round household essential. For more information, visit www. zevoinsect.com.

However, you can take steps to prepare for their arrival. For a safe, healthy and comfortable season at home, follow these pest management tips:

Regularly sweep around areas where food is prepared and consumed. Wipe up spills immediately and close food containers securely. Be sure your kitchen garbage has a tightly-fitting lid.

While outwitting bugs is a bit more challenging during summer, with a few tricks up your sleeve, you can keep your home safe and more comfortable with fewer uninvited guests. (StatePoint)

1. Fight Weeds. Although hand-weeding works, applying pre-emergent treatments to your lawn can help combat opportunistic weeds preemptively. Just be sure any chemical being applied is safe for the type of grass you have. Keep an eye on your lawn and manage weeds that appear. 2. Mulch. While weeds tend to thrive in bare soil, they hate thick mulch. Mulching can keep weeds from germinating. Use landscape fabrics beneath the mulch to keep sunlight out, but you’ll want to be sure it’s a type that will allow water to still permeate your soil. You’ll also want to prune plants and trees. This doesn’t just include cutting back new growth, but also cleaning out dead limbs or branches, and shaping areas that have become unsightly. 3. Scalp. To start the season, “scalp” warmseason grasses like zoysia or Bermuda. Removing old growth by cutting your lawn super low will allow sunlight in, which warms root systems and soil temperatures. Bag clippings so sunlight, fertilizer and water can penetrate the soil. More backyard life tips, advice and video tutorials can be found by visiting exmark.com/ backyard. When it comes to better backyard life, a beautiful lawn is fundamental. Taking your cues from the professionals can help you achieve lush, green spaces perfect for grilling, playing, kicking back and more. (StatePoint)

Playtime: It’s Not Just For Kids, Say Experts

While most of us associate playtime with childhood, adults are increasingly acknowledging the importance of play and leisure time for themselves. A new survey commissioned by The Genius of Play and conducted by OnePoll finds that 89% of adults have learned to appreciate the importance of play and leisure time over the past year. What’s more, 84% say taking time to play helps them be more productive at work.

“You’re never too young or too old to play,” says Anna Yudina, senior director of marketing initiatives at The Toy Association, which spearheads The Genius of Play. “In fact, research links play with a number of wellness benefits in adults, such as reducing stress, boosting life satisfaction, and empowering people to be creative, flexible thinkers.” To incorporate play into your life, consider these tips from The Genius of Play: • Take on a Hobby: Seventy percent of adults picked up a new hobby or leisure activity over the past year -- and with good reason. Hobbies can be a source of positive emotions, get you outdoors, encourage physical activity and social interactions, and spark creativity. From roller skating to dancing to crafting to playing an instrument, consider taking on a new, playful hobby or revisiting one you enjoyed during childhood. • Plan a Game Night: While play often occurs spur-of-the-moment, life is hectic and schedules are jam-packed. Consider sched-

uling time for fun to ensure it happens. For example, make one evening each week a totally screen-free, stress-free experience. Order pizza (or your household’s cuisine of choice) and break out games and puzzles. You might even consider planning themed trivia nights delving into your favorite subjects. • Hop in the Car: Whether you choose a destination that allows you to simply relax, or you take on a more active adventure, a trip can broaden your horizons and rejuvenate you when you’re feeling down or just trapped in the daily routine. Consider taking a justfor-fun trip on your own, with a friend or partner, or pack up the car and bring the kids. • Bring out Your Inner Child: Parents, grandparents and other adults with a kid in their life can spend more time playing with the little ones. Not only is play the perfect way to bond, research highlights a number of associated health benefits. Those who play with children burn 20% more calories per week, and researchers link playfulness to creativity, spontaneity and positive attitudes. Intergenerational play can help adults maintain cognitive skills as they age and even extend their life. A study published in the journal “Evolution and Human Behavior” found that grandparents who help out with grandchildren live longer. If you’re looking for some inspiration, visit thegeniusofplay.org for tons of fun, free games and downloadable activities. “While our primary mission is educating parents and caregivers about play’s vital role in child development, adults need time to play too,” says Yudina. “We hope to motivate people of all ages to play more -- whether it’s by embracing personal hobbies or by spending more time playing with their kids.” (StatePoint)

Move Over Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai And Shantanu Narayan: Meet The New, Unstoppable Indian Tech Honchos On World Map NEW DELHI – It’s time to move over for Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Google’s Sundar Pichai or Adobe’s Shantanu Narayan as new faces have joined the high-profile league of Indian American-led businesses, calling the shots in Silicon Valley and leading the global digital transformation wave.

“Living and working in India, which I will continue to do, has helped me deeply understand our company’s strong operating model and how we deliver value to clients,” he said in an internal note after his elevation to the top role on May 28.

The latest to join the elite tech CEOs’ club is Rajesh Nambiar, currently the chairman and managing director of Cognizant India, who has replaced Malcolm Frank, executive vice president and president, Digital Business and Technology, at the IT major. Nambiar, who developed and led Operation C3 (Cognizant Combats COVID-19), brings deep knowledge of applications, data, AI, analytics, infrastructure, cloud, and consulting to his new role that began from June 4. In a short span of time, Nambiar has established himself as a trusted leader among the 200,000 associates of Cognizant in India.

a range of applications, and managed profitable delivery for thousands of clients. He joins Arvind Krishna, the newly appointed CEO of the world’s oldest technology company IBM, taking the Indian talent to new heights. An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Krishna replaced Virginia Rometty as the CEO of the IBM Group. Last month, enterprise software major VMware announced the appointment of Raghu Raghuram as its new CEO and member of the Board of Directors, effective from June 1.

Earlier in his career, Nambiar served as the global leader of IBM Application Services, where he was responsible for an $8 billion P&L that included data, AI, and analytics, oversaw the building of technology practices offering

Dell, chairman of the VMware Board of Directors. The big change came as Dell Technologies announced to spin out VMware – a move that will generate more than $9 billion for the company that acquired VMware as part of the $58 billion EMC acquisition (announced as $67 billion) in 2015. VMware also appointed Sumit Dhawan as president who will lead all go-to-market functions including worldwide sales, worldwide partner and commercial organization, customer experience and success, marketing, and communications.

“I am thrilled to have Raghuram step into the role of CEO at VMware.

Another recent name is Indian American Thomas Kurian, former Oracle president of product development and a respected technologist, who is now leading Google Cloud.

Throughout his career, he has led with integrity and conviction, playing an instrumental role in the success of VMware,” said Michael

“We have always been bullish on India, and you will see more investment coming from us towards that direction.

India offers a great opportunity where Google Cloud Platform with its latest agile, secure and scalable offerings can help enterprises, SMBs and the growing startup ecosystem amid the government’s call for digital transformation,” Kurian told IANS recently. Google Cloud in February this year announced that Bikram Singh Bedi, who set up the Amazon Web Services operations in India, will succeed Karan Bajwa as its new managing director for India. Bajwa has already been elevated to become the new leader for Asia Pacific and is leading all regional revenue and go-to-market operations for Google Cloud, including on Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace. Google Cloud also continues to invest in India and is on track to launch its Delhi cloud region in India this year — it’s second after Mumbai which was launched in 2017. Here’s a bit about the science of your hair’s structure, as well as what to know to keep your locks looking their best all season long. Strengthen Hair As the experts at L’Oreal Paris explain, many hair care treatments significantly improve the hair’s surface by providing softness and shine. However, with hair’s complex structure primarily made up of proteins, strengthening the core of the hair fiber is much harder to achieve. Additionally, the architecture of the hair fiber is consolidated by numerous chemical bonds that create bridges between the chains. These bonds can be broken due to heat styling, summer weather conditions and other factors, resulting

and over time, hair’s resilience to daily stress is increased. Beat Frizz Summer weather can vary by location, but regardless, a leave-in styler can be helpful in combating frizz amid the heat and humidity of the season. Additionally, ending your shower with a bit of cold water helps seal the cuticles that were just opened by the warm/hot water you used to wash your hair. Sealed cuticles reflect light better (think shiny hair) and the frizz is less noticeable. Manage Color

“Who doesn’t love getting outside once the weather heats up? As a colorist, it’s my responsibility to make sure my clients know that proactive and reactive care are so vital to keeping color looking its best,” says celebrity hair stylist and colorist, Jonathan Colombini.

For blondes, Colombini recommends EverPure Purple Shampoo, Conditioner and Anti-Brass Mask to neutralize orange and yellow tones, leaving hair brighter and moisturized. Detox Over time, scalp buildup can cause issues like itching, shedding and clogged follicles. To deeply cleanse, exfoliate and remove excess build-up, all while being gentle on color-treated hair, try EverPure Scalp Care + Detox Shampoo and Scrub. When it comes to your hair goals, a few simple tweaks to your routine can mean a summer of sun and fun that doesn’t take a toll on your tresses. (StatePoint)

Pakistani Mangoes A Hot Sell Out Despite High Price And Limited Availabilty By Sumaiya Malik When it comes to Pakistani mangoes, Hasan Gondal puts aside all the dietary restrictions he likes to follow. The months of June and July, mango peak season, is the time when his house in Dubai serves mango milkshakes during the day and cut up mango as after dinner dessert every night. This is a fruit he has enjoyed even while growing up. “My first mango memory is the mango party in Karachi, Pakistan, family sitting outside in the garden, a table with different varieties of mangoes in steel buckets and melting ice, friends and sibblings playing outside right after sunset, a casual scene with with a hum of conversation and music.

Anwar Ratole, Chaunsa and Dusehri flood the market. This is the city from where mangoes from Paki-

stan fly to the US. A USDA team stationed in Dubai inspects each mango box and tapes the US seal of approval. The process has taken some years to streamline and puts a high price on the fruit once imported into the United States. In the U.S., in Austin, Texas, a mango box weighing 2 kg (~4-5 large sized Sindhri mangoes or ~1215 smaller Anwar Ratole) is being sold at $35. The high box

Now in his forties, Gondal still enjoys this “king of fruit” with as much fan fare in Dubai as he did in Pakistan. Fortunately for him, Dubai is a mango hub. Pakistani mango varieties such as Sindhri,

price is partly due to $10 per box cost of air freight. Despite the high price, Pakistani mangoes which are known for superior flavor, fragrance, and texture, are available in limited quantities in Austin. An eager clientele is willing to pay the higher price even though less expensive Mexican mangoes flood the local grocery stores. The mango season – June and July – is celebrated by mango lovers in Austin the same way as it is in Dubai and Pakistan. Mango export from Pakistan to the U.S. officially began in 2017 when producers in Pakistan interested in export stopped using pesticides containing Freon, a colorless and odourless gas that is detrimental to health. This was one of the criteria set up by the U.S. Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), a government agency that protects against the entry, establishment, and spread of pests, and facilitate the safe trade of agricultural products, PPQ website said. How To Travel Domestic In Covid-19 Pandemic

By Sumaiya Malik When I travelled to Washington D.C. two weeks after receiving the second dose of Moderna Vaccine, I had to wear a mask. Fortunately for me, I was wearing a cloth mask and not a disposable one. It was gentle to my skin, and I felt comfortable. More than that, I felt safe from the exposure to Covid-19. I thought travel restrictions had changed but not by much. Now that summer is here it’s best to understand how best to travel keeping in mind the Center of Disease Control, CDC, recommendations so that one is not caught off guard. A section of the U.S. population is vaccinated and rules of wearing a mask are relaxed. We decided to compile a list of recommendations by the Center of Disease Control, CDC, for domestic travel for our readers. “People who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine or a vaccine authorized for emergency use by the World Health Organi-

zation can travel safely within the United States,” CDC website said. People are considered fully vaccinated if it has been two weeks after they have taken the second dose of

the 2-dose series of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks have passed after a single-dose vaccine of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. If you don’t meet these requirements, regardless of your age, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Fully vaccinated people are required to wear a mask over their nose and mouth on all public transportation and while indoors as in airports and stations. They are not required to wear a mask outdoors and even on the top deck of a bus. It might still be best to check each state’s recommendation when planning a trip. You do NOT need to get tested or self-quaran-

tine if you are fully vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 3 months. You should still follow all other travel recommendations. People who are not vaccinated but have not been exposed to Covid-19 virus do not need to get tested if they do not have COVID-19 symptoms. People who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 3 months and recovered, as long as they do not develop new symptoms, do not need to get tested. Those who have been exposed need to self-quarantine and take Viral test that can be performed in a laboratory, at a testing site. Two types of viral tests are used: nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) and antigen tests. Both tests require a nasal swab. Always make sure to check travel restrictions in the city you are visiting. In my case, since Washington D.C. had less of its population vaccinated compared to Austin, Texas, I found more restrictions in D.C. than in Austin.

include size and shape of the box, ventilation holes, a certificate disclosing the kind of pesticide used, description labels and the level of ripeness at the time of inspection in Dubai. Limited shelf life of mangoes is the reason why they are airshipped to the US where wholesalers with importer license are expecting their supply. The presence of the USDA seal expedites handling. Stores such as World Food and Halal Market on Lamar Blvd. in Austin, pick up their orders from the wholesalers in Houston. According to Liaqat Ali Syed, owner of World Food, most of the mango cases he orders are sold within a few hours of reaching his store. “We have a list of customers who buy Pakistani mangoes from us year after year,” Ali Syed said who has run the store for 22 years. His employees call the list of customers waiting for the Pakistani mangoes. “Chaunsa is my favorite mango,” Dr. Nadeem Malik who buys the fruit from the store said. Malik in Austin, like Gondal in Dubai, grew up in Pakistan eating mangoes every summer. The fruit to him has nostalgic value. Customers buy up to 5 cases in one go to share with family and friends. They stand by the quality and flavor as surpassing all competetors in local grocery stores. Quality Halal Market, another store that sells Pakistani mangoes has been around in Cedar Park for ten years. “We bring 50 to 70 boxes mix and match - 20 boxes of each variety,” Syed Ali the owner of the grocery store said on the phone. The store even ships mangoes through FedEx to customers who have moved to New Orleans. Both the grocery stores were expecting the next delivery the following day and were already in touch with customers who like Gondal and Malik, enjoy mangoes. When asked why he is still willing to pay such a high price per box for mangoes in Austin, Malik joked, “The cost of these mangoes is small compared to the price of a ticket to Pakistan.” At the end of the day, whether in Dubai or Austin, mango lovers will cherish mangoes — regardless of the price.

Celebrate The Earth With A New Vision On Eye Care

When it comes to recycling, you may not often think about something as small as your contact lenses. Did you know, though, that 45 million Americans who wear contact lenses flush anywhere between 1.8 and 3.36 billion lenses down the toilet or sink per year? As a result, contact lenses could be contributing to the trillions of microplastics in waterways that can harm marine wildlife and even enter our food supply.

If you’re like many people, you’ve probably already made a few changes to your routine, from switching to reusable water bottles and reusable grocery bags, even to composting. There are everyday sustainable solutions for so many parts of our lives – did you know there’s even one to recycle our con-

tact lenses and to help reduce microplastic exposure in our environment? Here’s what to know:

become playground sets and park benches. Most recently Bausch +

Lomb took the program one step further by repurposing the recycled waste to create custom training modules that were donated to the Guide Dog Foundation, a national notfor-profit that trains guide dogs for people who are blind or visually impaired. The modules, which were funded by the Bausch Foundation, included benches, tables, waste stations and an agility ramp used to train the dogs and to further enhance the organization’s Smithtown, N.Y. campus for those who visit. Launched in 2016, this first-of-its-kind recycling initiative has already collected and recycled nearly 30 million contact lenses,

blister packs and top foils and processed about 180,000 pounds -- the equivalent weight of six school buses.

In keeping America’s teachers safe, standard cleaning methods alone can only do so much.

of global infection caused by the transmission of microorganisms encountered in daily life.

A new EPA-approved product,

“The pandemic has put more responsibilities on schools than ever before, and our teachers are stretched thin,” says Jess Hilton, chief marketing officer, Allied BioScience.

Independent lab studies conducted by Dr. Gerba found SurfaceWise2 to be effective against Human Coronavirus 229E, the EPA-approved surrogate, demonstrating the ability to successfully protect against COVID-19.

Because of their small size, contact lenses can get filtered out of regular recycling center facilities and end up in landfills. Understanding the impact this could have on the environment, Bausch + Lomb, the makers of Biotrue ONEday daily disposable contact lenses joined forces with TerraCycle, a global leader in recycling hard-torecycle waste, to develop the first and only contact lens recycling program available in the U.S., the ONE-by-ONE Recycling Program. The program collects contact lens waste, which is then separated based on composition and melted into plastic that can be combined with other recycled materials to

This free recycling program accepts used contact lens materials from Biotrue ONEday, as well as other brands. To participate, simply collect your used contact lenses, plus the blisters and foil they come in, and bring them to a participating eye care provider. There are over 5,600 eye care providers enrolled in the program nationwide. To find one near you, visit www. bauschrecycles.com. While this change may seem small, it has the power to make a big impact on global recycling efforts, making it an excellent to start adopting today. (StatePoint)

Preventing The Spread Of COVID-19 In America’s Classrooms

While the rollout of the vaccine has been a relief for the nation’s teachers, many of whom have been working in-person on and off since the start of the pandemic, the reality is that not everyone will get the vaccine.

What’s more, being in the school building all day with children who are not yet approved for immunization leaves many educators and school staff vulnerable to COVID-19, no matter how many precautions they take while off the clock.

“Providing additional safety measures for this sometimes overlooked frontline worker group is critical.”

But there’s good news: new scientific breakthroughs are helping make schools safer by protecting surfaces for far longer than routine cleaning, which does so only momentarily. The Problem Human coronaviruses can persist on inanimate surfaces such as plastic, glass, fibers and metals for up to nine days, according to the National Institutes of Health. While routine cleaning and disinfection help, they leave surfaces immediately vulnerable to recontamination, particularly in highly trafficked areas like break rooms,

vent recontamination. On top of that, the burden of constantly reapplying momentary disinfectants throughout the day has largely fallen on teachers, many of whom are paying for cleaning supplies out of their own paychecks. A New Solution

however, when used as directed, offers continuous protection from COVID-19 with a single application, making school safety more reliable and efficient. The product, SurfaceWise2, was developed by biotechnology company Allied BioScience, which has a mission of reducing the footprint

As leading infectious disease expert Dr. Charles P. Gerba explains, schools have always been a major germ transfer zone, and the pandemic has only elevated this health and safety risk. “The average child touches their face about 40 to 50 times per hour,” says Dr. Gerba. “Having a reliable way to protect surfaces for long periods of time is essential.”

Coated surfaces were found to reduce the concentration of these viruses by greater than 99.9% within two hours of contact. SurfaceWise2 has undergone rigorous reviews and extensive safety testing, carrying the lowest possible EPA toxicity rating making it safe to use in enclosed spaces, which is critical as teachers must work inside the classroom. The coating is non-toxic, non-irritating, and contains no chemicals that produce harmful vapors or gases. To learn more, visit www. surfacewise.com. “Alongside precautions like maskwearing and social distancing, effective long-term coatings to protect surfaces can allow schools to better keep their teachers safe, and help make the choice between safety and livelihood a little easier for America’s educators,” says Hilton.(StatePoint)

The 2021 State of Small Business Payments and Cash Flow report, released by Intuit QuickBooks, found that 75% of small businesses in the U.S. feel stressed about cash flow, and nearly a third aren’t using any tools to manage or forecast their cash flows. Not surprisingly, 56% of U.S. small business owners report having made a poor business decision due to concerns about insufficient cash flow. “Small businesses face unique challenges in the management of their finances. Too often, they track and manage their money in more than one place, which can lead to increased fees, lack of visibility, and wasted time,” says Rob Daniel, director, product management, Intuit QuickBooks. Additionally, the bank account’s Envelopes feature makes saving easy, allowing for high-yield interest buckets for routine expenses or long-term goals. “This tool can also deliver faster

Must-Have Gear For Your Outdoor Trips And Adventures If you’re like many Americans, your family has spent the past year discovering -- or rediscovering -the joys of vacationing in the great outdoors. Nearly half of all campers either started camping for the first time in 2020 or restarted after having not camped in recent years, according to KOA’s North American Camping Report. Keep Your Laundry Looking And Smelling Great All Summer Long Never underestimate the power of scent. When you first open that dryer door or pull a warm, freshly laundered shirt over your head, you feel good, confident, clean and ready to face the day.

You might not consciously think it, but you feel it. But in summer, long days outdoors result in frequent clothing changes and towel usage, creating “loads” more smelly laundry than usual. Wondering how to make your favorite clothes stay bright and last longer? Want those sheets smelling great for guests long after they’re laundered? Here are some of the best tips from Ensueño laundry care experts: • Prep your clothes. Separating colors is a no-brainer, but be sure to secure clothing as well. Zip zippers, attach Velcro and fasten snaps to avoid snags and hangups that can ruin clothing. Check all pockets too—many cell phones and important papers have found

sueño found 63 percent of detergent users prefer a great scent. For a pick-me-up every time you dress or dry off, find a long-lasting one you love. For an extra scent lift, choose brands that use the same

same great scents (spring fresh and violet bouquet) as their popular fabric softener. By using the same scent from start to finish, you’ll give your laundry a

long-lasting boost of freshness and avoid cocktailing scents that can compete. • Adjust your water temperature. Use the right water temperature for the soil level and the type of garments you’re washing. Use hot water to remove germs and heavy soil (though some fabrics are too delicate for hot and can bleed, so check the label carefully), warm water for good cleaning action without much wrinkling or fading, and cold water for delicate items or bright colors that might run or fade, dulling your whites. • Choose the right detergent. Powders sometimes fail to dissolve in cooler water temperatures and pods can get really expensive. The new Ensueño Liquid Detergent deep cleans and delivers stain-fighting power and color-fading protection so you smell fresh, you look fresh and you feel fresh — a trifecta of laundered confidence. • Boost softness. Use fabric soften-

ers and dryer sheets to cut laundry time and make your laundry irresistibly soft and great-smelling. Fabric softeners also help keep clothes wrinkle- and static-free and help protect your clothing from wear and tear, lengthening garment life. Ensueño’s long-lasting fragrances are inspired by nature and their plant-based softening agents lock that fresh-from-the-wash aroma into every fiber of clothing for weeks. Ensueño products can be found at favorite retailers including Walmart, Sam’s Club and Family Dollar. To find more ways to love your laundry, as well as tips to keep your family looking its best, visit www.ensueno.us. The summer can be the trickiest time of year to keep garments looking and smelling their best. With a few smart strategies, you can ensure clothes stay bright and fresh all season. (StatePoint)

What It Means To Get ‘Ghosted’ And How To Prevent It Happening To You Have you been “ghosted” and don’t know why? Whether you’re a seasoned dater or fresh on the market, understanding ghosting can mean fewer surprises and bring romantic success. “To ‘ghost’ is to vanish from a romantic or prospective partner’s life. And when girls ghost on you – or guys – it can sting. Unfortunately, as more of our lives go digital, it’s increasingly common,” says Chase Amante, founder of Girls Chase, one of the most popular men’s dating advice sites in the world. He specializes in helping men build confidence to bring the women they want into their lives and keep them. Dating experts say 74% of people have been ghosted and while it’s tempting to blame callousness or uncaring, these are the top reasons ghosting happens: • Mismatched expectations. If your date is less invested in the relationship, they may not know how to communicate that. For instance, if you reach out but they’d prefer to

deescalate things, they may think, “I’ll come back to this later,” and put it off. As more messages come

stances can lead many to retreat from the dating scene. Dodging It Chase notes you can avoid being ghosted by following these habits: • Make a strong impression. Someone is more likely to keep talking to you when you stand out in their mind. • Follow texting best practices.

Being ghosted can happen to anyone, despite best efforts. Chase recommends the following strategies for handling it: • Figure out why. Were there any complaints or disconnects? Did you have a sense something was wrong? • Address possible complaints. “Hey I know we might’ve crossed signals on XYZ issue. I just want try to get back on the same page.” • Change tactics. Ignoring texts can be easy. Switch things up. Send a

voice message. Even pick up the phone and call. “Lots of people are scared to call, but it still works, even for Gen Z,” says Chase. • Spark curiosity. If the standard “let’s hang out” isn’t working, try an invitation to an art opening or hike. • If you get your ghost out, make it count. Undo any negativity. Provide value and make it fun so that next time you text, your date is thrilled to hear from you. “In our study we found when men manage to get in touch with their ghosts, they’re more than twice as likely to get dates that lead nowhere than they are to get a new girlfriend,” says Chase. So how do you make your date pay off? Check out “One Date,” which focuses on helping men deliver a date good enough to turn a girl into a girlfriend. Sigiriya Fort Sigiriya or Sinhagiri pronounced see-gi-ri-yə) is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres (660 ft) high.

Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning. Sigiriya is considered to be one

a park for the royals, laid out on a symmetrical plan; the park contains water-retaining structures, including sophisticated surface/subsurface hydraulic systems, some of which are working today.

The name of this place is derived from this structure — Sīnhāgiri, the Lion Rock (an etymology similar to Sinhapura, the Sanskrit name of Singapore, the Lion City). The capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king’s death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.

of the most important urban planning sites of the first millennium, and the site plan is considered very elaborate and imaginative. The plan combined concepts of symmetry and asymmetry to intentionally interlock the man-made geometrical and natural forms of the surroundings.

The south contains a man-made reservoir; these were extensively used from the previous capital of the dry zone of Sri Lanka.

On the west side of the rock lies

In 1831 Major Jonathan Forbes of

Five gates were placed at entrances. The more elaborate western gate is thought to have been reserved for the royals.

Akbar And Birbal Stories Painting By Birbal

Once Akbar told Birbal ‘Birbal,

Sigiriya came to the attention of antiquarians and, later, archaeologists. Archaeological work at Sigiriya began on a small scale in the 1890s. H.C.P. Bell was the first archaeologist to conduct extensive research on Sigiriya.

According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion.

the 78th Highlanders of the British Army, while returning on horseback from a trip to Pollonnuruwa, encountered the “bush covered summit of Sigiriya”.

make me a painting. Use imagination in it.

To which the reply was ‘But hoozoor, I am a minister, how can I possibly paint?’ The king was angry and said ‘If I don’t get a good painting by one week then you shall be hanged!’ The clever Birbal had an idea. After one week, he went to the court and with him he carried a covered frame.

Akbar was happy to see that Birbal had obeyed him, until he opened the cover. The courtiers rushed to see what was wrong. What they saw made them feel very happy. At last, they would not see Birbal in court! The painting was nothing but ground and sky. There were a few specs of green on the ground. The Emperor, angrily, told Birbal ‘what is this?’ To which the reply was ‘A cow eating grass hoozoor!’ Akbar said ‘where is the cow and grass?’ and Birbal told ‘I used my imagination. The cow ate the grass and returned to its shed!’

The Cultural Triangle Project, launched by the Government of Sri Lanka, focused its attention on Sigiriya in 1982. Archaeological work began on the entire city for the first time under this project.

There was a sculpted lion’s head above the legs and paws flanking the entrance, but the head collapsed years ago. Sigiriya consists of an ancient citadel built by King Kashyapa during the 5th century. The Sigiriya site contains the ruins of an upper palace located on the flat top of the rock, a mid-level terrace that includes the Lion Gate and the mirror wall with its frescoes, the lower palaces clings to the slopes below the rocks. The moats, walls and gardens of the palace extended for a few hundred metres from the base of the rock. The site was both a palace and a fortress. The upper palace on the top of the rock includes cisterns cut into the rock.

Independence Day - USA 2021 (Continued From Page 01) The day marks the historical event when the United States of America declared its independence from the rule of Great Britain. The declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776 therefore the holiday is commonly referred to as the Fourth of July or July Fourth.

The first celebration of July 4 occurred in 1777. However, Independence Day had not become an official holiday until 1870 when Congress made it an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1938, it was changed to a paid federal holiday.

The text of the document formally announcing separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain and explaining this decision, the Declaration of Independence, was approved on July 4.

Independence Day celebrations include patriotic displays, political ceremonies and speeches, parades, concerts, carnivals, fairs. Family reunions often occur on this day; many families host or attend picnics or barbecues. In the evening, firework displays traditionally occur. Fireworks may be accompanied by patriotic songs. Major firework displays are in New York City, Chicago, San Diego, Boston, St. Louis, San Francisco, Detroit, and Washington, D.C.

The text of the Declaration had been prepared by the Committee of Five, Thomas Jefferson being the principal author. The anniversary of the Declaration would come to be celebrated as Independence Day in the United States.

Independence Day also is a public holiday in some of the United States unincorporated territories, namely Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

On July 2, 1776 the Second Continental Congress approved the Lee Resolution, also known as the resolution of independence.

Fuel Safety Month Tips To Keep People, Pets And Property Safe Following the Colonial Pipeline closure earlier this year, many people panicked. “We saw people loading up on fuel using everything from milk jugs to plastic bags. That’s simply dangerous, irresponsible and not worth the risk. Dropping an unreliable container with gasoline could cause an environmental, safety or potential fire situation,” says Dan Marshall with Scepter, a manufacturer of dependable fuel safety containers. The company has been working for years to educate people on fuel safety. During Fuel Safety Month in July, Scepter experts are providing crucial fuel safety tips: At the Pump

• Follow proper filling instructions for containers with Flame Mitigation Devices (FMDs). • To refill containers, remove them from your vehicle, turn off the engine and place them on the ground a safe distance away. • Fuel containers can build static electric charge during transport. Touch the container with the gas dispenser nozzle before removing its lid to ground the static electricity charge.

10 Refreshed Etiquette Tips For Today’s Wedding Attendees Even before the pandemic, wedding etiquette was tricky. After a year like no other, the dos and don’ts around “I do’s” and being a good guest have become even more complicated. Some protocols remain true. Do RSVP quickly. Don’t be late to the main event. Others are less clear. Should you send a gift for virtual ceremonies? What’s the best way to greet others at in-person events? Hilton, a global hospitality company that hosts thousands of weddings annually, encourages travelers to make new memories and reconnect this summer. And to help you maintain perfect wedding guest status, they’ve partnered with international etiquette expert Diane Gottsman to provide these tips: 1. Put a stamp on it: Even if the invite says you have months to respond, it’s best to reply within one week. Waiting too long is a sign you are hesitant. 2. Dress to impress: Let the sug-

gested attire on the invitation or couple’s website be your guide. Still unclear? Reach out to the

ness right now,” says Gottsman. “Pay attention to non-verbal cues. If someone reaches out for a handshake, hug or fist-bump, reciprocate if you feel comfortable. If you’re not ready for physical contact, offer another friendly gesture, such as a heartfelt nod. It’s okay to pull back, smile and say cheerfully: ‘I can’t wait until I feel comfortable with hugs; I’m just not there yet.’”

hosts. As a general rule, dress up rather than down to show you put thought into the event. Finally, don’t wear white. It’s reserved for the bride. 3. Honor air hugs: “Everyone has a different comfort level with close-

4. Know posting protocol: Unless the couple guides you otherwise, “They get the right to post the first photos on social media,” says Gottsman. If they encourage you to post at will, it’s A-OK to share your snaps. Use provided hashtags and remember that the official wedding photographer and videographer get first dibs on great shots. 5. Stash your smartphone: Use your phone to take photos, but once you’re done, tuck it away. It’s potentially distracting for you and off-putting for others.

5 Ways To Celebrate Your Love Of Music

This season, there is no better place to celebrate a love of music than outdoors. Here are five ways to make it happen: 1. Plan a block party: Whether you host a smaller gathering for a handful of neighbors and friends in the

backyard or organize a larger event in a public park or street, a block party is a great way to gather the community together while giving local bands and musicians an opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity. 2. Make yourself portable: Having

an instrument that’s portable is key to on-the-go music-making versatility. Keyboardists should check out the ultra-compact Casiotone CT-S200, a go-anywhere keyboard with all the features and functions needed to start the party. To make music wherever and whenever you want, just pop in six AA batteries and grab the built-in carrying handle. Dance Music Mode lets you easily create and remix EDM tracks, triggering drum loops, basslines, synth parts, effects and transitions. You can play on your own or enjoy the library of 60 built-in songs.

3. Go to a music festival: As every festival attendee knows, these events bring together like-minded enthusiasts from near and far for a full day or an entire weekend of music.

And after a year of social distancing, festivals are finally back. Book tickets now to guarantee your attendance. 4. Attend the theater: In the warmer months, theater companies and symphonies around the country bring their productions outdoors to amphitheaters, makeshift stages in parks and other locations. Check your local newspaper or community social media pages for listings. 5. Update your outdoor speaker system: Give your backyard or outdoor space a tech makeover to up your hosting game and enjoy better sound quality outdoors. Be sure any speakers you install are weatherproof and designed for outdoor use. With the right tools and inspiration, you can celebrate your passion for music anywhere this season. (StatePoint)

6. Get accustomed with other customs: Before attending a wedding incorporating cultural customs unfamiliar to you, do some prenuptial prep. “Every culture has different customs,” says Gottsman. “Knowing how to dress, how to gift and what to expect is the responsibility of a good guest.” 7. Connect with courtesy. If staying at a hotel with friends and family, keep courtesy top-of-mind. For instance, if you booked connecting rooms through Hilton’s new Confirmed Connecting Rooms by Hilton option, “Think about how often you’ll spend time together and when you’ll keep the connecting doors shut and open,” says Gottsman. While you and your roomies may embrace the up-allnight slumber party vibe, nearby guests may not. Keep the volume down and the fun contained to your cozy cove of connecting rooms. To book two or more connecting guest rooms ahead of a wedding or summer reunion trip, visit Hilton.com/

ConnectingRooms. 8. Duck debate: “Conversation will no doubt turn to hot topics, like politics, religion and vaccines. A gracious guest will make every effort to steer clear of volatile debate,” says Gottsman. 9. Give comfortably: The first etiquette rule: send a gift, even if you can’t make the event. The second: don’t feel pressured to give more than is comfortable. Gone are the days when guests are expected to cover their per-head cost. Not sure what’s appropriate? Follow the registry. Cash and checks are great alternatives as well. 10. Get glam for the cam: Attending virtually? Grab the suit instead of sweats. “The same courtesies apply,” says Gottsman. “RSVP swiftly, dress for the occasion, arrive on time, show your smiling face and send a gift. Even if it’s virtual, a wedding is a celebration and time to reconnect.” (StatePoint)

Make A Difference – Reduce Paper Usage By Vidya Kumar How things have changed since the pandemic. As most of us are working from home I am sure that the usage of paper at office is considerably reduced. Even at home printing the reports or documents is on a need basis and hence, there is a reduction in the tree cutting I suppose. Yet, compared to 25 years ago our usage of the paper has increased as we use kitchen paper towels readily and even for use in the washrooms to dry our hands or cleansing wipes or the use of toilet paper. Did you know that making one roll of toilet paper requires 37 gallons of water, 1.3 Kilowatt/hours of electricity and some 1.5 pounds of wood according to Lloyd Alter of treehugger.com? And one 20-foot pine tree weighs 1080 pounds which means you get 720 rolls and an average household (2.6) members uses 409 rolls per year which means one tree for every two households per year. This is just for toilet paper. If we look at paper towels which

are made from virgin paper that is no recycled content as per Creighton University sustainability issue, we need 17 trees and more than 20,000 gallons of water to make one ton of paper towels. Just replace one roll of virgin paper towel with 100% recycled content we could save 544,000 trees. Same is the case with facial tissues. Trees are being cut at the faster pace than growing in order to meet the demand for these paper products. My wonderful husband is the case in point. He uses these paper towels at home even though I have kept washcloths in kitchen all because it is convenient. How do we make a person understand that we are using up the resources faster than generating them and at this pace we will not have a home called earth anymore? Using washcloths, reusable towels and bringing back handkerchiefs as a fashion vogue is the ideal way to move forward. I was thrilled to see washable makeup remover cloths at Costco and wish more such products are manufactured.

How Joining A Lung Health Support Community Can Change Your Life

It’s important for everyone living with a lung disease like asthma to feel a sense of connection and belonging and to be understood. Beyond managing the physical challenges of the condition, coping with the mental and emotional aspects can be difficult. Finding a support system helps make living with a chronic lung disease a bit easier.

To help those living with asthma, the American Lung Association is showcasing the Better Breathers Network (BBN), a virtual, patientfocused environment that offers meaningful resources to improve

the lives of the more than 31 million adults living with a chronic lung disease such as asthma. Here’s how the knowledge and connection of a support network can change your life. 1. Being able to speak freely with a trusted source can positively impact one’s health. Members are encouraged to converse with other users and share their experiences. Social support can greatly reduce the stress associated with living with asthma – creating a space to share frustrations, fears and concerns. It is this type of engagement that allows individuals to thrive.

Ms. Ketika Tyagi

2. Support communities are offered on a flexible, online platform. Online forums give members an opportunity to benefit from other patients’ experiences from the comfort of their homes, without having to make additional arrangements to meet in person. 3. Members receive management tools and additional education

resources. Members of BBN receive patient-focused newsletters, as well as access to the BBN Resource Library, which includes a welcome packet, lung disease tip sheets, handouts and on-demand educational videos, invitations to virtual BBN meetings and local activities, and information about the American Lung Association. 4. Support provided online is a useful sharing experience. Members can gain new approaches to asthma management that they discover alongside other patients and caregivers. Within these groups, members can share tips and tricks for

identifying and avoiding asthma triggers, experiences with medication, healthcare experiences and more. 5. We are all stronger together. Regardless of how long you’ve had asthma, living with the chronic lung disease can be challenging. To face those challenges and improve your quality of life, it’s necessary to find and utilize resources that work for you. And some of these resources are just an online message away, including help from healthcare professionals, education and support groups. The American Lung Association’s goal in creating BBN was to establish a patient-focused environment that shares meaningful educational programs and events, opportunities to connect with others and resources to better manage chronic lung disease. These tools are accessible by smartphone, tablet or computer. For more information or to sign up, visit Lung.org/bbn. (StatePoint)

BAPS CHARITIES SERVES THE COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY COVID-19 ACROSS INDIA (Continued From Page 01) Since April 2021, India has been plagued by a second surge of COVID-19 cases – with daily new cases sometimes reaching over 400,000. The situation on the ground is extremely dire, with over 350,000 deaths to date. As this surge takes place, BAPS Charities spared no effort in combating the pandemic and alleviating the suffering. To the critically ill, ventilators, oxygen and contemporary medical therapies are being provided. Humanitarian support is also being provided to those in need, including families of the patients, in the form of meals, subsidized medicine and other daily necessities. BAPS Charities, through its global network and partner hospitals, has to-date supported the treatment of over 3,800 victims to full recovery from COVID-19. Anand Barot, a lead volunteer assisting with efforts on the ground in India commented, “The situation here is dire. Medical staff and volunteers at hospitals operated by BAPS are doing everything possible to provide the best treatment and care for those suffering from the virus.

We understand that there is a long road ahead and we continue to explore other ways to help.” Partner hospitals in India have provided nearly 900 beds to the afflicted. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has created an extraordinari-

ly high demand of medical-grade oxygen in India. The supply chain for medical oxygen is incredibly complex and meeting the necessary demand has proven quite challenging. Given that medical oxygen supplies are vital, COVID-19 or otherwise, BAPS Charities utilized its international network of volunteers and well-wishers to provide medical oxygen relief where possible. Dr. Pranav Patel of Gujarat, India said, “Due to the lack of oxygen in the clinics, hospitals and homes, patients were suffering and dying

from breathlessness. The situation was so bad that the relatives of patients had to stand in line to procure oxygen - often walking away with nothing. At that time, BAPS and its volunteers answered the call for help. The organization came to the hospital and helped us procure oxygen concentrators and we were able to save the lives of many patients and recover fully.” To date, over 2,300 oxygen concentrators, 132 metric tons of liquid oxygen via cryogenic tanks, and over 7.85 million liters of gaseous oxygen have been distributed throughout India, saving thousands of lives. These essential oxygen supplies were transported from the USA, UK, UAE, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and elsewhere - truly a global effort. For many patients, access to medical oxygen has been limited by their proximity to major metropolitan areas. For that reason, BAPS Charities and partner organizations have connected with doctors and medical professionals in many rural areas to provide them with oxygen and other necessary supplies. Relief was provided throughout India, including the states of Chandi-

garh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Chimanbhai Parmar, who has for many years operated and owned a clinic in a small town of Dali in Gujarat, India said, “Many COVID patients in villages lack oxygen to breathe properly and often do not receive the facilities they need. The welcome step by BAPS [in providing oxygen concentrators] has brought great relief to many patients until we can shift them to a larger hospital. Many patients are greatly benefiting. This is indeed welcome help.” Throughout the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, BAPS Charities has mobilized volunteers throughout the world to deliver PPE, provide hot meals and care packages, conducted food drives for the needy and held COVID vaccination drives. Additionally, BAPS Charities USA has provided direct financial assistance to numerous hospitals, medical centers, and various community support organizations. Doctors Answer Patient Questions About COVID Vaccination

The American Medical Association (AMA) is urging Americans to get vaccinated as soon as they’re eligible and continue precautions against COVID-19 infection. But patients have many questions.

• Which vaccine should I get?

“For more than a year, physicians and public health officials have asked us to mask up, physically distance and do all we can to stop the spread of COVID-19 in an effort to save lives while scientists developed vaccines to help bring us back to normal,” says AMA President, Susan R. Bailey M.D. “With vaccines here and available to all Americans over 16, it’s your turn.”

• How do I know when I’m eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine? As of April 19, all people age 16 and up in every state are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. Additional information about eligibility and timeline can be found at your local public health department website found at www.cdc. gov/publichealthgateway/healthdirectories/. Vaccination information changes quickly, so check back frequently.

Here are the AMA’s answers to top patient questions. • How do we know COVID-19 vaccines are safe? COVID-19 vaccines were tested in large clinical trials with participants of different races, ages, ethnicities and medical conditions to ensure they meet safety standards. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reviewed all trial safety data before authorizing vaccines for emergency

along with risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. All pregnant individuals should have an opportunity to receive a vaccination. If you have questions, speak with your physician and make decisions based on risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Three vaccines are now available in the United States: those made by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen Pharmaceuticals. All are safe and highly effective at preventing severe COVID-19 illness, hospitalizations and death. The vaccines were studied at different times, in different countries and

• Should I get the vaccine if pregnant or breastfeeding? There isn’t definitive data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women, but no untoward effects have been reported. Data suggest when pregnant individuals contract COVID-19, they have increased risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death,

• Will COVID-19 vaccines be available for young children? Vaccines aren’t currently authorized for anyone under 16, as only adults participated in clinical trials. As trials are completed in younger populations, vaccines may become available. • Once I’m vaccinated, can I stop wearing masks and practicing physical distancing? The CDC has

phased out certain prevention measures for fully vaccinated people allowing them to resume some lower-risk activities. The CDC guidance allows fully vaccinated people in non-health care settings to visit other fully vaccinated people indoors without masks or physical distancing. They no longer need to wear a mask outdoors while walking, running, hiking or biking alone, or when in small gatherings, including with members of their own households. However, masks are still necessary in crowded outdoor venues like sports stadiums, the CDC says. Additionally, fully vaccinated people should continue taking precautions -- wearing masks, physical distancing and adhering to other prevention measures -- when in public and when visiting unvaccinated people at increased risk for severe disease or who have an unvaccinated household member at increased risk. Follow CDC and health department guidance as it updates at www.cdc. gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance. html. (StatePoint)

the fourth instalment of the franchise took off when a viral tweet claimed that the actor was “almost confirmed” for the role. However, at the time, neither did the actor, nor the production house comment on the same. As far as the viral post was concerned, it was proven that it was just a fanmade poster. Meanwhile, other reports doing the rounds claimed that Deepika Padukone is being tapped

Eid-Ul-Adha And Qurbani This Month

(Continued From Page 01) The term ‘Qurbani’ means the act of slaughtering of an animal right after Hajj on the day of Eid-ul-Adha or three days after, with the intent to please God and share the meat with the needy and friends. According to Hidaya.org, “Animals that can be sacrificed are goats, cows and camels.” Muslims all over the world take part in this religious obligation during Eid if they are able to afford it. Austin has arrangements for Qurbani available through smaller grocery stores that sell Halal meat. Apart from this, there are also options of online donations for Qurbani in other parts of the world. One such store, World Food and Halal Market (9616 N Lamar Blvd # 110, 512-832-8365), has always offered Qurbani arrangement to its customers. At this time of the year, customers are able to place order for the number of goats or cow meat they are interested in slaughtering. Payment was taken ahead of time in previous years, but this year, clients are supposed to make the payment at the time of pickup depending upon the weight of the animal. The actual slaughtering of the animals takes place at a ranch outside Austin according the rules of meat slaughtering. The cuts of meat are based upon what the customer has ordered. The meat packers put the meat in two-pound bags for ease in pickup. The pickup point is the store. The meat is hygienically packed and the store calls the customers when their meat is ready for pickup. Traditionally, one order of Qurbani meat is divided into three parts. One part goes to charity, one to friends and one to the family placing the order. The stores have arrangements in giant freezers to hold the meat for charity. Refugees and other persons in need stop by at the stores for to pick up free meat that people leave at the stores just for this purpose. The giver does charity and does not know who received it. The receiver does not know who gave it. A kind of a sanctity and respect for the giver and receiver is maintained in this way. Non-profit organizations such as MCSS (Muslim Community Support Services have made arrangements for pickup of meat from your home for the refugees. They also have drop off points in case any customer prefers to not leave the meat for charity at the store. Mr. Mohsin Lari, the co-founder, is always available to help and is only a phone call away. Customers take home their own share to cook and enjoy and also take with them the party they distribute between friends. They divide the meat and either ask their friends to come and pickup the meat, or they go drop it off to friends’ homes. Families have fun doing this part too as it brings them closer to their friends.A second option of Qurbani online is available through Islamic Relief. They are a non-profit famous for taking care of the destitute all over the world. They are a trusted website and people go to them when they do not want to do charity in other parts of the world. Both options of doing Qurbani in Austin or somewhere else are obligations that Muslims all over the world use. No option is better than the other. Both have their pros and cons. We are just thankful that both are available in Austin, which is a home to an increasing number of South Asians who celebrate Eid-ul-Adha every year.

Sherni Review: A Must Watch Movie The man vs. animal conflict can be narrated in several ways. The deep, dark jungle can be romanticised and turned into a battlefield for a heroic tale of a saviour standing against the many stakeholders who threaten to tilt the balance of the fragile ecosystem. Or it can be viewed through a realistic lens that appears deceptively simple, like director Amit Masurkar does in Sherni. The title refers to a maneating tigress on the prowl and also alludes to the divisional forest officer Vidya Vincent (Vidya Balan). She isn’t an archetypal screen heroine who roars her way out of murky waters, but is understated and determined to navigate the mundaneness of her government job to assert herself. In Newton (2017), Masurkar showed his astute understanding of the social fabric, through an electoral officer’s attempts to facilitate polls in a troubled region. There, the play-off between hope and reality lent itself to a black comedy. He narrates Sherni like an insider who knows the workings of the administration rather well. Even the few comic moments stem from an insider’s perspective. Sherni, with its story and screenplay by Aastha Tiku, leads us into the magnificent jungle, keeping the

sights and sounds as close to reality as possible. If the jungle and the prospect of safaris are exciting for outsiders, it’s a day-to-day work-

the people Vidya has to work with. She finds an ally in Hassan Noorani (Vijay Raaz) who, like her, takes a scientific approach to the man

protective nature for a pet cat as well as the big cats. At one point an officer states that we, humans, might spot a tiger on our 100th trip but the tiger may have already seen us 99 times. There are beautiful points of view of the human characters framed against the wilderness, as though seen through the eyes of the majestic beasts.

place for the officers. We first sight Vidya too, as a matter of fact. No drama, no heroine-like entry. We learn that she’s been pushing files for years before being posted as a field forest officer. Everyday patriarchy stares her on the field. After the tigress has claimed its first victim, a character comments that during a crisis, they are having to deal with a ‘lady forest officer’. Vidya doesn’t retaliate. She bides her time, just like the tigress making its way through the borderlands towards the jungle. Sherni is brilliant in its portrayal of

Vs. animal struggle. She looks up to Nangia (Neeraj Kabi) who talks eloquently about the cost of development on the ecosystem. Junior officers, male and female, offer support. It’s in such company that she finds her will to plod on and stand her ground when the hunter Ranjan Rajhans (Sharat Saxena) and two opposing political groups begin to use the crisis for their own benefit. Then there are the wily shapeshifters. The metamorphosis of Vidya happens gradually, with her growing

Sherni is also part forest procedural — the striking opening scene of an officer crawling and mimicking a tiger to test if the hidden camera can capture footage, and later the task of collecting DNA samples from the bodies of the victims when tempers run high. At no point does Masurkar overtly dramatise the proceedings. If we expect a parallel between the tigress T12’s journey back into the deep jungle with Vidya emerging victorious in her sojourn, it doesn’t happen on expected lines. Instead, the story that appears crushingly true makes us wonder how success is measured. Should one win a high stake battle or stay content with making smaller changes? Does anyone actually care?

The restrained nature of the protagonist and the narrative makes the tale formidable. Rakesh Haridas’ cinematography and the subtle, effective background score by Benedict Taylor and Naren Chandavarkar, as well as the music by Bandish Projekt deserve a mention. Sherni’s triumph also stems from its actors. Vidya owns her part and makes her internalised portrayal appear easy. Her character is also a lesson in screenwriting — of countering patriarchy with a quiet resilience. Masurkar also explores her rapport with her family, where she asserts herself with mutual respect. Vijay Raaz is natural and remarkable in his part, knowing he’s an important cog in the larger wheel. Sharat Saxena, Neeraj Kabi, Ila Arun and the actors who form the political clique and the villagers all seamlessly fit in. Brijendra Kala gets a few fun moments when he regales poems to an unsuspecting audience. Sherni doesn’t have the predictable high-on-adrenaline approach one might expect from such a premise, but it leaves you thinking long after. That’s a win. (Sherni streams on Amazon Prime Video)
