ADDRESS

This year distinguishes itself in two significant aspects. It has been >

J

I

a year of celebration of our identity as a Catholic School and a year

where significant decisions have been made to respond to the changing dynamic of education in this highly technological age.

• | ”

Fte?

The Year of the Great Jubilee is drawing to a close. We responded

enthusiastically to the Jubilee Call. Our opening of the Year Mass,

celebrated for the first time ever at St Patrick's Cathedral was a precious occasion. His Grace, Archbishop Pell, led the College

community in a joyous celebration of the Eucharist.

The College sent two students to Rome

to celebrate World Youth Day. This was achieved through the generous support of students, the Parents and Friends Association and the Catholic Education Office. Our Year 11 and Year 12

students, with over 15,000 others, celebrated the Senior Students Jubilee Mass at the Rod Laver Arena. Similarly, our Year 7 to Year 10 students, with over 68,000 other young people

gathered at Colonial Stadium.

The College continues to move steadily forward in the areas of pastoral care and curriculum development.

Education is essentially a social activity. The quality of relationships among all

involved in education impacts significantly upon learning.

Our pro-active approach to assist

students to further develop their interpersonal and leadership skills continues to build upon our well-established programs in pastoral care. The decision to introduce a three-period day

in 2001 was the result of extensive research into effective learning environments.

The

expansion into classrooms of computer pods, connected to the Internet, opens up access to a

tool that can enhance learning opportunities. The development of Interdisciplinary Studies for Year 7, the creation of smaller homeroom groups who will remain together for all studies and

the reduction in the number of teachers that they will come in contact with, will enhance the transition from primary school to secondary school.

The new millennium presents us with many challenges. We endeavour to creatively respond to these challenges in the context of our mission as a Catholic school.

Mrs Olwen M J Bell Principal

Each student, staff member and parent is a vital link in the Ave Maria College communin’. The hopes and dreams of each person are important. It is part of our mission to be able to assist in the journey towards their fulfilment. During the year, 1 listened to some comments from David Ransom who spoke about the importance of the imagination in the experience of youth. He believed many young people are not able to work towards their dreams for many reasons. This, he believes, has led to the escalation of issues such as teenage depression and suicide. A school communin’ has a part to play in being able to capture and nurture the 'imagination and the 'dreaming' of young people as they continue their life journeys. The journey may take many different paths but the journey must be experienced. I am reminded of one of Michael Leunig’s prayers entitled 'The Path To Your Door'.

The path to your door Is the path within: Is made by animals, Is lined by flowers, Is lined by thorns, Is stained with wine, Is lit by the lamp ofsorrowful dreams: Is washed with joy, Is swept by grief Is blessed by the lonely traffic ofart: Is known by heart, Is known by prayer, Is lost andfound, Is always strange, The path to your door.

the state in terms of money raised. This was indeed a fine effort. Other events included the Melbourne City Mission Winter Sleepout, four casual clothes days for Catholic Mission and numerous other

activities. The Student Leaders, Class Captains and SRC members have done a marvellous job in supporting fellow students and staff.

I'hc Pastoral Welfare Committee forms a significant structure which assists in the monitoring and development of discipline and welfare across the College. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to each Year Level Coordinator who has provided strong leadership for students and staff: Mrs Ruth Johnson (Year 7), Mrs Jenny Caligari (Year 8), Mrs Filina Virgato (Year 8 Term 2), Ms Maureen Dillon (Year 9), Mrs Anne Major (Year 10), Ms Luisa Erzetic (Year 1 1) and Ms Pauline Cutajar (Year 12). Ruth Johnson, Anne Major and Luisa Erzetic will be pursuing various goals and interests next year other than those of being a Year Level Coordinator, and I thank them very much for what they have brought to the important area of level coordination. Their talents and time created much positive energy in the areas within which they worked. Once again the areas of student counselling, career counselling and special education have been instrumental in assisting students. Ms Jodie Wassner has provided a wonderful

W E L I A R E

service through her innovative approach to counselling. Programs such as Peer Support (Year 7/11 and Year 8/12) and other activities were very successful. Support and advice were made available to many students in the area of careers education and counselling through the work of Mrs Janet Jensen. Mrs Pam Pearce, Mrs Glenda Vincent and Mrs Teresa Barichievich have continued to develop new ways of providing support to students with special learning needs.

1 am constantly reminded that each staff member has a significant impact on many students and we cannot underestimate the value of staff in the lives of the students. Students appreciate the time and effort that staff give them. I am very grateful for all the work and support that staff members give so generously to others. My hope is that the journey in 2000 was challenging, memorable and life-giving for each one of you. For some people, the journey was filled with grief and loss; for others, it was peppered with joy and laughter; for most of us, it contained a sprinkling of different experiences that provide us with an opportunity to learn and develop. Ms Cathy Livingston

Deputy Principal — Director of Staff and Student Welfare

The spiritual, academic, social and emotional aspects of rhe journey are important ingredients. We are particularly

blessed at Ave Maria College because of our Christian traditions which enrich our experiences. Once again, the year 2000 brought with it a number of significant achievements. The

Student Representative Council was particularly active in raising both awareness and funds to support people who find themselves in difficult circumstances. The World Vision 40 Hour Famine was a highlight with our students being in rhe top 1 5 schools from across

THE

WORLD YOUTH DAY Melanie Marantelli and Katie Minniti of Year 11 represented the College as Pilgrims

at the World Youth Day 2000 in Rome in August. Julia Ottobre, Year 11, Sarah McGowan

and Sarah Upton of Year 10 also travelled as Pilgrims from Our Lady ofthe Nativity parish, Essendon.

Celebrating Mass with two million people and visiting St Peter's Basilica can only

deepen ones faith. Among the group from

Melbourne who attended WYD, was a noticeable spirit that bound us together.

WYD Pilgrims Sarah Upton, Katie Minniti, Julia Ottobre, Melanie Marantelli, Sarah McGowan

The atmosphere in the city was incredible. Everywhere we looked there were people singing and chanting songs from their country. Train stations, streets, churches

and piazzas were full of happy pilgrims, who were all in Rome for the same reason, to celebrate their faith. WYD reminded me that Jesus’ mission is as relevant today

as it was 2000 years ago. Katie and I feel honoured to have been able to represent Ave Maria. We thank everyone in the

College community for their interest and

Year 11 Homeroom Captains Ms Luisa Erzetic, Donna Pricoli 11L, Mychau Hoang 11M, Patricia De Marco 11D, Colette Werden 11K, Melanie Marantelli 11A

The Year 11 students of the Year 2000 have been a friendly, special and united group of students.

There were many young people from different schools all celebrating together and this was wonderful to see.

They began the year with much trepidation, as they were faced with new challenges and their VCE preparation.

It has been a real privilege for me as Year 11 Coordinator to have the opportunity to work with this group of students again and I have shared many precious moments with them.

Although as the months went by, it was soon clear, that they had serried in very well for the year.

The Camp in Eildon was a time for developing new friendships, teamwork, VCE orientation and recreation. The Debutante Ball was a gala occasion.

The young ladies looked a picture in their gowns of white and together with their partners showed much skill in their style of dance: what a performance! This year the students were very fortunate to attend a Mass for the Jubilee.

26 Ave Maria - Vidian 2000

As I reflect upon the many events of the year, I know I will always hold on to the memories that to me are very dear. I would like to thank rhe Year 1 1 Homeroom Teachers: Mrs Lesley Adams 11 A, Mr Lanny De Almeida and Mrs

Michelle Petrucelli 1 ID, Mrs Cheryl Kerin 11 K, Mr Andrew Landrigan 11L and Mrs Lyndal McLean 1 IM, for their contributions and support throughout rhe year.

My warmest thanks to the Year 11

students and their parents for all their support and efforts, which have been much appreciated and have made the year truly special and memorable. Furthermore, I would like to wish the students all the very best for their future endeavours and may all their dreams and aspirations be realised.

STUDENT COUNSELLOR

This year, counselling at the College has

provided services to many students with

a range of needs. I believe that an important part of a counselling service

is to break down the negative stereotypes associated with counselling

so that students and parents understand that attending counselling can be useful

to people experiencing a range of difficulties, varying in degree of severity.

We all experience difficulties with different problems. Those of us who

seek help are usually more sensible than

"weak". Melissa Duscher 10P at Robert Walker florist, Bourke Street, Melbourne

I am pleased to say that over the past 12 months, many students have told me that they feel comfortable using the service and

most say that their friends and family are

very supportive. A number of students

have started using the service for simple problems such as organisation, troubles

sleeping or time management. This has resulted in tremendous improvements at

school. Others have come for more complicated difficulties with friends,

family, school or mental illness.

In addition to individual counselling, programs on bullying, mental health,

sexual health, eating well, sleeping

strategies and healthy exercise have been implemented. These have provided Nadia Giampino 10R and Michelle Testolin 10P at Vic Roads, Lygon Street, Melbourne

opportunities for students to become

familiar with the types of services available within counselling.

DRAMA

MUSIC

The Drama Department this year has continued to develop the skills and talents of our students from Year 7 to 12. With the phasing in of the new look VCE units next year; we bid a fond farewell to the "old" and the performers of the "old".

This year has proven to be a wonderful year for the musical life of Ave Maria College. We have continued to move forward in developing our Instrumental Music program, with the formation of new ensembles and the introduction of an evening Soiree.

In Semester 2, the Year 11 Drama students presented their ensemble performance "Still haven't found what I’m looking for..." at the final Year 11 Assembly. "This powerfol performance, written by the students, contrasted the public personas with the tragedy in their lives, of a number of famous people, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, The Jackson Five and Tina Turner. The dramatic performance included powerfol impersonations which were both comical and at times quite moving."

A combined band of over 60 members was formed with St Bernard and St Columba’s College early in Semester 2. Students have attended weekly rehearsal at St Bernard’s under the baton of Mr John Crowley and have made excellent progress with their ensemble playing abilities.

(Ms Pauline Cutajar).

Earlier in the year, Louise Van lersel (Year 12 Drama) presented her solo performance based on the character of Cath Walker as pan of the College’s celebration for Aboriginal Reconciliation. A number of students took part in the Arts Evening this year - producing a range of small acts, whilst others demonstrated the making (in newspaper) and wearing of historical costumes. Added to this, the sparkle of champagne, nibbles and art and music presented by students of the College - a great night was experienced by all.

Mrs Irene Wrochna Drama Coordinator

A Junior Rock Band was also formed to encourage those students in Year 7 and 8 taking music lessons at school to learn the joys of being in an ensemble. The results achieved in only a short amount of time have been tremendous and I look forward to further success next year. Their debut performance at the Soiree was fabulous.

The Soiree was held in early September and provided an opportunity for those students undergoing AMEB examinations to have an audience to practice performing in front of. Though a somewhat nerve racking experience, the evening was very relaxed and some excellent items were presented, including over 25 individual performers, the Stage Band, Senior Rock Band, Junior Rock Band, String Ensemble and Choir. A big thank you must go to all those who assisted with and supported the evening. I also had the opportunity of attending the annual Soundhouse conference in July and am pleased to announce that we will be including a number of new technology programs, demonstrated at this conference, next year in our curriculum. They are going to provide students with the most advanced technological information and compositional assistance possible.

Finally I must say a big thank you to Ms Pauline Hong and all of the instrumental music staff for their diligent work and support of the Music program at rhe College. Their efforts have been outstanding and 1 look forward to bigger and better things next year. Ms Lousie Sharpe

represented Ave Maria College at the Regional Schools Convention held at

Lowther Hall. The convention was designed to understand the workings of the government and enhance students’

participation as active citizens in our democracy. The topic for this

convention was "should the Australian

constitution expressly recognise the indigenous people of Australia?" The students found the debate both

challenging and exhilarating.

The Geography students in Year 9 took a boat cruise along the Maribyrong River. Year 9 Excursion to Sovereign Hill Celeste Giustz Monica Overbury

They explored the historical significance of the river and its contribution to the economic development of the area. They

studied the impact of human activity on the environment and the river. Year 9

History students visited Sovereign Hill. They were given rhe opportunity to go down a gold mine where they witnessed

a laser show demonstrating how gold was

extracted by miners from the rocks in claustrophobic and dangerous

conditions. Students were also allowed to participate in a program that

explained the role of women during the

gold rush. The students were fascinated by their experiences. Loren Malyszko

Valedictory Assembly Monica Cottee, Jade Miggiani, Meagen James, Car a Donato,

Angela Maturana

We celebrate our families, the sacrifice and sharing. The self giving, in time, in money, in

patience and in kind.

We celebrate the faith,

That which is deep in each heart. That which makes us remember, celebrate and believe.

That which is a family heritage, which gives us confidence to move on, to

continue. We believe in ourselves, in the essence of who we are.

The presence and action of God in our lives, living, breathing, drawing us forth into the world.
