A WARM WELCOME FROM OUR CEO

It is with great pleasure I introduce the Spring Edition of our Business magazine ‘Your Business’. In preparation for writing this article I wanted to reflect on previous editions, this led me to the archives and finding the first publication of the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce magazine which took me back thirty-one years.

Many elements are still the same to this day it featured our Annual Dinner which was held on Friday 13th March 1992 at the Belleisle House Hotel, when this magazine is published our 2023 Annual Dinner will have taken place.

It also highlighted why the Chamber exists which is to serve our members. When taking up post it was really important to me to ensure that our offering to you was right. Over the last few months, I have worked with our membership team to review how we deliver our membership, and this

has resulted in the redevelopment of our membership tiers.

In the coming weeks and months the Chamber team will be in touch with you in advance of your membership anniversary to go over what new tier your business will benefit from. Please be reassured those key services and benefits you are familiar with will still be available with some added value elements.

Another key function of Chamber network is to make sure issues being faced by business are heard by policymakers. Our Quarterly Economic Indicator has just closed for quarter 1, with the QEI Q1 report arriving in your inboxes soon. The quarter 2 survey will launch mid-May. The quarterly chamber survey is among the most well regarded and respected trackers of business confidence and performance in the Scottish economy, and your feedback through this allows us to lobby for the issues most concerning to your business.

One current example of this is the Deposit Return Scheme due to go ahead in

August despite concerns of business and producers. The industry is not against a fully functional and workable scheme to support the net zero agenda but in it’s current form there still seems to be more questions than answers which could lead to many failed SME businesses.

I want to thank those members who have already shared their concerns with me. It is vital that we keep feeding these into Government to support a delay to the implementation of the scheme.

A LETTER TO AYRSHIRE BUSINESS FROM AYRSHIRE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL, ANGELA COX

As the new Principal of Ayrshire College, I am impressed by the level of partnership that so many of our businesses have with the college. These work best when employers understand their future skills needs and work with the college to develop a robust talent pipeline and understand the reskilling and upskilling requirements of their current workforce.

In a rapidly changing world, driven by technology, a climate emergency and global socio economics, I am also aware that we need to do more to engage with industry in a different way and evolve our approach to skills development and delivery.

We know that industries are struggling to recruit enough people, and although this is testament to the excellent growth and opportunity that exists across Ayrshire, we are at risk of not realising our potential if we don’t take advantage of new technologies that will reduce the need for some unskilled roles and invest in the development of the skills required for the future workplace.

Ayrshire College has an important role to play in supporting industry to resolve this, but it requires collective leadership across business, education, and skills. A crucial aspect of this is to have considerably more in work learning. To do this we require business leaders to work with us to create these opportunities.

I have been bowled over by the number of hidden gems across Ayrshire, that are competing and thriving in a global economy, and as I continue to learn about our region, I am committed to ensuring that Ayrshire College plays its part in creating a prosperous Ayrshire economy.

The cost-of-living crisis is adversely impacting local communities, including charities like Break The Silence who are seeing an increase in demand for services, and experiencing increased costs of service delivery.

Income to fund their work comes from a variety of sources; contracts, trust and foundation awards and grants, and through donations. A recent survey from Charities Aid Foundation found that 14% of people plan to cut back on charity donations in the next 6 months.

Walk for Break The Silence in this year’s Kiltwalk and help raise vital funds. Kiltwalk events are great fun with lots of supporters to cheer you on and with entertainment provided. You can take part alone as a personal challenge, with friends, family, team-mates or with work colleagues as a team building or health and wellbeing activity.

DIZZYFISH AV INSTALLATIONS: FROM INTEGRATOR TO DIZZTRIBUTOR… A COVID LOCKDOWN STORY!

Dizzyfish, a family run business based just outside Kilmarnock, pride themselves on providing honest advice and a quality AV install for private and commercial clients. When Lockdown hit, Dizzyfish, like many in their trade, found themselves unable to go into premises or homes.

Lockdown, however, allowed this busy company an opportunity to stop... as the whole world did, and spend some muchneeded time looking at their processes and reflect. They realised that a big part of their success as a business was based on their 25+ years of experience which allowed them to source and specify the perfect product for each installation.

HIGH STREET AND HYBRID

Four branch offices combined into one, with too few seats for everyone at once – but a new outreach to clients across Scotland. Welcome to one high street firm’s restyled version of practice in the 2020s.

The firm is McSherry Halliday Solicitors, which relocated its 35 strong team, previously dispersed in four offices across Ayrshire, to newly renovated premises at Elliott House, Irvine.

The new office is fitted out with desks for just 15 staff, though the building can accommodate the firm’s expansion plans if necessary. It sends a clear signal that a practice which until the pandemic had stuck to the 9 to 5 office working day model, has fully embraced hybrid working, with staff spending maybe two days a week in the office and three at home.

This reflection helped them make the decision to diversify into the world of AV distribution but with a twist. They wanted to only distribute products they knew inside-out and trusted to do the job well.

So Dizztribution ‘For Installers, By Installers’ was born and this lockdown venture has now grown to supplying 21 brands from all over the world. Dizzyfish have secured sole distribution rights to around half of their brands and boast a fantastic relationship with suppliers and integrators which is based on trust and quality. Their client base currently includes AV integrators, electricians, M&E consultants, IT managers, CCTV and security engineers and facilities managers from across the UK and Ireland.

Dizzyfish still LOVE their AV integration work and actively still install and spec everything they supply meaning integrators who use their products have access to a wealth of knowledge and expertise to help guide them through anything from planning to final handover.

“We have been working with this technology since then, gradually becoming

GOVERNMENT MINISTER LORD OFFORD

JOINS PRA GROUP’S CELEBRATION OF 10 YEARS IN THE U.K.

U.K. Government Minister for Scotland Malcolm Offord joined PRA Group President and CEO Kevin Stevenson, other local leaders and employees to mark the milestone at PRA Group’s state-of-the art offices in the HALO Enterprise and Innovation Centre in Kilmarnock.

Over the past decade, the U.K. team has nearly doubled from its original size. With its move to HALO, PRA Group committed a further 15 years to the town and earlier this year announced a partnership with Ayrshire College.

In honour of the 10-year milestone, Stevenson recognised the 40 employees who have been part of PRA Group’s U.K. team since its inception:

“Their continued dedication to PRA Group’s shared values has been critical to fostering the success of more than 300 people PRA Group employs in the U.K. today. PRA Group’s investment in the U.K. is one of which I am truly proud, and it is because of the incredible way this team has upheld our customer-first approach and focus on the long term.”

Anderson Strathern appointed to Inverness and Cromarty Firth

Freeport company following key role in successful bid

Anderson Strathern, one of Scotland’s most innovative, independent law firms, has been appointed as solicitor to Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport Limited, the company which will manage the green freeport after it was announced as one of two successful bidders last week.

The aim of the freeports is to boost international trade, investment, regeneration and growth in their geographical areas, while contributing to the country’s journey to net zero.

During a visit to Scotland on Friday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the bid by the “Opportunity Cromarty Firth” consortium, along with the Forth Green Freeport bid, had both been successful.

The consortium included the Port of Cromarty Firth, Global Energy Group, Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd and Port of Inverness, as well as academia, regional businesses and public sector. Anderson Strathern joined the partnership in July 2021 to provide legal support and input into corporate governance issues, the formulation of the project and the final formal bid.

Neil Amner, Director and specialist in transport and environmental law at Anderson Strathern, said: “Having been involved with this exciting project since summer 2021, we have been anticipating this announcement for a long time, but it has been worth it - it really is a major boost for the firm as well as for the Inverness and Cromarty area.

“We can’t wait to get started with the considerable amount of legal work involved in getting this new initiative off the ground. Being able to help shape the future of one of Scotland’s first green freeports is a fantastic opportunity for us.”

ACTION AGAINST STALKING CELEBRATE A SUCCESSFUL 2022

Local charity Action Against Stalking have achieved some significant milestones throughout the past few months. Among those milestones, AAS have grown their team, allowing them to offer more support to more victims of stalking. They have also recently received vital funding, which will allow AAS to create these new roles, and will further strengthen the help and support they offer to victims of stalking.

One exciting change that has taken place is the welcoming of their new Chief Executive. Their previous Chief Executive, Ann Moulds, stepped down in 2022, and has now become a Founder Trustee with Linda Jones taking up the post in November 2022. Linda’s aim is to continue the innovative work of AAS and the growth of their partnerships.

AAS also announced the continuation of their National Stalking Awareness Week (NSAW) campaign. NSAW takes place in April, running from the 24th to the 28th. This year’s theme focuses on young people and stalking.

CLOUD PIONEER CELEBRATES 10-YEARS THAT TRANSFORMED ITS FORTUNES

A Scottish cloud software firm has grown 250% in a decade thanks to its far-sighted decision to become a partner for the sale of global business management software, Oracle NetSuite.

Now Eureka Solutions is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the tie-up, and revealed how its confidence in the future of cloud computing has reaped rewards, fuelled growth and created jobs.

At the time of diversification, Eureka Solutions was already firmly established as a leading reseller and developer of Sage software. Adding NetSuite to the portfolio escalated the business’ growth over the last decade to the point where it is now a £5m+ a year business with more than 70 staff, making it the biggest NetSuite partner in Scotland and among the top performing in Europe.

David Lindores, CEO of Eureka Solutions, said: “This is a huge milestone for everyone at Eureka Solutions – including many of the team who delivered the original partnership and are still with us.

“We took a clear decision at a time when many business leaders were unsure about the cloud. Most were very nervous about the possibility of putting finance and accountancy systems on it.

PROPERTY MARKET ACTIVITY REMAINS STRONG IN AYRSHIRE

Activity in the Ayrshire residential market during 2022 remained strong, reports Galbraith, with sales readjusting to pre-pandemic levels following two extraordinary years of heightened activity.

The Galbraith team in Ayr carried out almost 100 market appraisals and conducted 1,153 property viewings for prospective buyers during 2022. The number of buyers registering with Galbraith in Ayr last year was an exceptional 1,448.

Jake Shaw-Tan, who leads the Galbraith estate agency team in Ayr, said: “Despite the recent economic difficulties and increased mortgage rates, properties are still selling relatively quickly in Ayrshire,

with many attracting a good degree of interest. Applicant numbers remain high, with lots of buyer appetite and many ‘ready’ buyers able to move quickly when the right property comes on the market.

“Small holdings and rural properties with a few acres of land remain popular and as ever there continues to be a shortage of this type of property on the market. Despite the well-publicised increases in materials and building costs, properties that require significant modernization prove very popular when brought to the open market. Buyers are still keen to secure properties they can put their own stamp on and the need to undertake refurbishment is not proving to be a hurdle.”

“However, our team was absolutely convinced this was the future, and thanks to that foresight we got an incredible head start which has benefited our business in many ways. It is a very important anniversary for us.”

The whole Ayrshire Chamber team were saddened to hear of the passing of Alister Firth in late January.

Alister was a friend of the Chamber for many years, often championing membership and entertaining with his wicked sense of humour.

His images featured across our social media platforms and within our magazine for many years - from our Annual Dinners, to AGMs, to Connects, and even our Business Awards ceremonies – as well as featuring on the ‘Your Business’ magazine front cover on many occasions.

Alister was part of the Chamber family for 24 years and will be sorely missed.

November 2020 witnessed the signing of the Ayrshire Growth Deal, a £251.5 million investment agreement between the three Ayrshire Councils, the UK and Scottish Governments. The Deal represents an opportunity to transform communities across Ayrshire. Its people centred approach ensures that the economic growth achieved benefits everyone.

The Deal seeks to build on the particular strengths found in Ayrshire, such as in aerospace, engineering, life sciences, manufacturing and tourism. As a result, investment from the Deal is targeted across these key sectors and at strategic locations, in order to act as a powerful catalyst which stimulates growth and increases prosperity for local people, and beyond.

Since signing the deal, significant progress has been made in developing a range of innovative and multifaceted (e.g. in the fields of aerospace, advanced manufacturing, energy, blue economy, tourism) projects throughout the region- despite the backdrop of major economic and political challenges. The formal opening of the HALO Enterprise and Innovation Centre in Kilmarnock, has become a focus for green and digital growth through creation of high quality office space.

Through its innovative operations, HALO creates opportunities for SME’s and young people to develop their businesses and skills as part of the emerging new digital green economy. In addition, HALO is now a catalyst for the development of the rest of the former 23 acre Johnnie Walker site, which includes a new Ayrshire College campus and sustainable housing. The pan-Ayrshire Community Wealth Building project has formerly been launched offering diverse programmes that seek to support local businesses. At this early stage of the programme, over 500 businesses have been supported generating approx. £150,000 in investment for local business.

Working for Healthy Economy has recently started delivering services across Ayrshire. It’s a unique programme that bridges the gap between health issues and economic growth, by providing health support to both unemployed and those in employment and their employers free at source to both individuals and businesses. Around 500 unemployed people have been supported using the service, delivering significant success in reducing issues around anxiety, and depression.

Most recently, the Ayrshire Growth Deal has played its part in attracting the international satellite manufacturing company Mangata to locate to the Prestwick International Airport site. The investment by Mangata has been made possible through an innovative funding and assistance package from public sector partners, totalling over £83.7 million from Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Government, UK Government and South Ayrshire Council.

As a result, the majority of the new jobs generated will be highly paid, highly skilled technical engineering positions in product development, design, manufacture, and operating the system end-to-end.

Lobbying Update

Deposit Return Scheme and Alcohol Advertising Consultation

On your behalf, the Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) has been actively campaigning and representing member views on a range of Scottish Government regulations. This update focuses on the Deposit Return Scheme and the Alcohol Advertising & Promotions Consultation.

Deposit Return Scheme:

Since SCC have been raising the business voice on this matter, we have achieved the following:

• Implementation date:

Secured a delay to the original implementation date of the scheme in 2022.

• Reduced producer fees:

Circularity Scotland has published significantly reduced producer fees and Day 1 payments. The changes mean producer fees will be 8%, 30% and 40% lower for glass, PET plastic and metal containers respectively. The Day 1 payments for producers using UK-wide barcodes will also be reduced by two thirds, from 2.4 months of fees to 3 weeks of fees.

• Online takeback:

Initially only the largest grocery supermarkets will be obliged to provide a takeback service; all other businesses will be exempt.

Restricting Alcohol Advertising & Promotions Consultation:

A part of SCC’s policy approach is to reduce the amount of regulation on Scottish businesses. As such, SCC has raised this matter with senior Scottish Government officials, specifically requesting that the consultation is paused immediately. We cited this would be a “signal of intent” by the Scottish Government that it was listening to the business community and would help to ease the burden on businesses during this economic climate.

AYR HOUSING AID CONTINUES TO FLOURISH IN A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

Trees have a strong foundation, drawing sustenance from roots yet reaching for the sky. Ayrshire Housing Aid Centre (AHAC) is a housing advice charity, established in 1986, with solid well-established roots in South Ayrshire.

AHAC offers service users quality accredited independent housing information, advice, advocacy and engagement services. Their main aim is to prevent homelessness, sustain tenancies and to alleviate fuel and food poverty, bringing multiple benefits to the local community. Trees need sustenance to grow, and service users can flourish when they engage with AHAC. The service works in partnership with the Service User taking ownership of their problem, and AHAC helping guide to a positive outcome.

Trees are resilient. They bend with storms, continuing to flourish in their environment, becoming stronger and growing deeper roots. AHAC has been through difficult times, changing, evolving and adapting to meet new challenges and demands. With a strong ethos, values and team AHAC continue to flourish, to be successful, and to empower others to be strong and resilient, no matter how strong the storm is.

Folk Music breathes ‘Fresh Ayr’ into Ayrshire this August

Fresh Ayr Folk Fest, the brand-new folk festival taking place in Ayr’s Rozelle Park between 11 – 13 August 2023, has announced an array of incredible artists, guaranteeing a weekend of amazing live entertainment.

It is shaping up to be wonderful three days with more than 25 artists featuring on the line-up of world-class entertainment in the folk, world and roots genres.

The event will also offer a host of family entertainment, with art and craft stalls as well

as creative, woodland and circus workshops. For keen learners there will be music workshops, with health and wellbeing sessions and evening ceilidhs on offer.

For those looking to camp, there will be plenty of pitches to choose from in the beautiful surroundings of Rozelle Park.

First Wedding of the year sees The Creative Occasion Co. leap into 2023

Given that the focus of this issue is growth, it seems only appropriate that The Creative Occasion Co celebrates its first achievement since becoming public in September 2022.

The company successfully planned and styled their first wedding of 2023, their first wedding since they launched after five months of networking and business development.

On January 21st, 30 people attended the wedding at Enterkine Country House, which began with a private ceremony at dusk, followed by the party of a lifetime, with 200 evening guests attending.

“From our first meeting with Caroline we knew we had made the right decision. Already under pressure with wedding planning as we had booked a date only 4 months away Caroline lifted the pressure instantly. With my fiancé and I both working, studying and raising our family of 5 children there was little time left to plan our wedding.

A focus on Food and Art to Revitalise Ayr Town Centre

Narture evolved during the first lockdown from previous projects that occupied empty properties with cultural pop-ups. The first permanent property was established as The Sourdough Bakery at 3 Cathcart Street in June 2020, ‘baking real bread to earn the dough to fund arts projects. The bakery recently won ‘Scotland Bread Bakery of The Year in the Prestige Awards. This success led to achieving a second property, the vacant Historic Lady Cathcart House across from the bakery at 22 Sandgate, where an art space was established.

Following a successful CrowdFunder campaign in 2021 during the incredibly trying times of repeated lockdowns they curated a programme of experiential and immersive arts projects, poetry and storytelling events.

Planning permission was recently granted to change the use of the art space at 22 Sandgate to an artisan café which opened in June 2022. The sit-in cafe features their handcrafted sourdough products and seasonal menu based on ethical fresh produce, along with craft-roasted coffees, loose leaf teas and more.

Social media manager Chloe Hendrie is determined to show local businesses that short form video content is to be embraced, not feared.

“I think a lot of people are still under the impression that TikTok is for dancing teenagers,” says Chloe, who runs Fangirl Social. “When really, it’s evolved into this massive online marketing platform which is also used by many as a search engine.”

Chloe decided to share her expertise after

identifying the issue faced by small business owners: as focus has shifted towards video content, people are expected to become content creators – which is a full-time job in itself.

“A lot of business owners don’t have the time alongside everything else that’s required of them,” says Chloe, “or maybe they just don’t want to be on camera. They want to run their business, not be the face of it.”

‘Saved’ manuscripts join collection at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum

Twelve original manuscripts written by Robert Burns, which have just come into the care of conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland, will go on display this January as part of a new exhibition entitled Homecoming

The manuscripts join more than 5000 Burns-related items which are in the care of the National Trust for Scotland at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway. The site includes an award-winning museum experience, as well as the cottage where Burns was born in 1759.

National Trust for Scotland Chief Executive Philip Long OBE said: “Securing this outstanding collection for the public was an excellent example of our sector working together to raise the funds and support needed to save them for our cultural heritage and ensure that they would be protected for and enjoyed by future generations. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this possible.

GROW YOUR OWN WAY Ayrshire Businesses to Benefit from Fully Funded Growth Programme at UWS

After an incredibly successful launch at their Paisley campus in October 2022, University of the West of Scotland are bringing the UK Government backed Help to Grow: Management Programme to their Ayr campus in April 2023.

The Help to Grow: Management Programme is delivered by the University of the West of Scotland’s School of Business and Creative Industries, one of only six Business Schools in Scotland to hold the Small Business Charter accreditation, which recognises their effort and commitment to supporting the SME community.

Valued at £7,500, this UK Government backed Programme is an innovative and accessible solution for SMEs looking to boost their performance, resilience, and long-term growth. The Programme is 90% funded by the UK Government, but aware of the ongoing financial pressures faced by businesses, UWS is the only university in Scotland that is currently offering an additional 10% funding bursary to ensure there are no financial barriers for those who are keen to engage with the Programme.

Since launching the Help to Grow: Management Programme at their Paisley campus in October 2022 UWS have already supported almost 70 local businesses through the Programme and hope to have a similar impact in Ayrshire and the surrounding areas when they launch the Programme at Ayr campus on the 4th April 2023.

Over 12 weeks participants will take part in eight interactive online sessions in addition to four inperson workshops at UWS’s Ayr Campus exploring key topic areas including internationalisation, finance, operations, branding, marketing and digitisation. Alongside weekly interactive workshops led by expert academics participants will take part in peer group discussions with likeminded business owners and benefit from 10 hours of 1:1 business mentoring to develop a unique Growth Action Plan tailored to help them tackle the challenges they face.

Upon completion of the Help to Grow: Management Programme businesses will enter a growing alumni network of entrepreneurs who are keen to connect and collaborate and will receive six months free membership to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to further their learning.

Who can take part in the Help to Grow: Management Programme?

Ayrshire based SMEs looking to take part in the Programme must:

l be registered in the UK

l have been operating for at least 1 year

l employ between 5-249 members of staff

l not be a Charity

While Charities are not eligible for this Programme, social enterprises are permitted to take part.

Businesses that employ between 5-9 members of staff can claim one fully funded place on the Programme and businesses that employ 10 or more members of staff can claim two fully funded places on the Programme.

As they move further through their education journey, or perhaps leave education, they are having to make such important decisions about their future. Whether to move into further education, an apprenticeship or straight to fulltime employment, these are tough decisions to make, and even tougher, if they don’t have a good knowledge of the opportunities that await them. As employers, educators and parents, it is our responsibility to help with this.

We have industry sectors that have critical skills gaps, aerospace, health and social care, hospitality, rail, engineering to name a few and we must make sure that our young people are aware of these opportunities and career pathways.

DYW Ayrshire’s Innovative School Projects continue to go from strength to strength with now over 100+ active projects across Ayrshire. Our most recent funding support went to St. Josephs Academy, which celebrated the launch of their Barista and Cycle Maintenance projects in December. We were also very proud to support the launch of ‘The Valley Café’ at Garnock Community Campus, a visitor space for parents, pupils, staff and the local community. But that wasn’t all for December!

DYW Ayrshire supported Lockhart Campus to launch two new projects at the school – Cycle Maintenance and Digital Media. Finally, great news from Doon Academy with the launch of their very own Skill’s Academy in late November, now a total of four on-going projects supporting pupils’ getting into the world of work.

Joshua joined us at Green Home Systems Ltd for a work experience placement last week and hopefully enjoyed the experience!

We think these placements are extremely beneficial to both employers and the young people involved. For the employer, it’s a great chance to get young talent exposed to the business and to get to know potential future employees, as well as staying connected with school leavers’ expectations of a workplace.

For the young person, it gives them experience of a working environment, as well as exposure to a specific role which they may look to pursue.

In Joshua’s case, the work experience focused on electrical work. We hope this is something he will pursue and look forward to welcoming more young people to our business.

“Well done to pupils from Auchenharvie Academy, St Matthews Academy, Ardrossan Academy and Largs Academy who all participated in work experience with North Ayrshire Police.

During their placement they visited the Marine Unit, went on a sail using the police boat on the river Clyde. They visited Prestwick Airport to speak with airport police they also got to speak with firearms officers learning their role and they were lucky enough to be allowed on an American and Canadian military aircraft and meet the pilots.

The pupils got the chance to speak with CID detectives and learned about forensics and how the police investigate serious crime. They visited the Mountain Rescue Police and observed a demonstration of a rescue being conducted with all the safety equipment in a quarry.

All pupils were given certificates by Police Inspector Cameron for their work, they were all magnificent and done their respective schools proud”.

CAREERS EVENTS/SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT

AUCHENHARVIE ACADEMY

Auchenharvie Academy held a Careers Fair on 26th January 2023. We were fully supported by DYW Ayrshire in the organisation of the event. We had sixteen employers from a range of industries available for our senior pupils to meet and gain more information from. Our senior options were happening the following week, so this event was timed well and allowed our pupils to make more informed choices about their next academic session. Some of our pupils have been in touch with employers after the event and are applying for internships, courses and apprenticeships following the information they received during the fair. Our DYW Barista class supported the event by serving hot drinks to our employers. On behalf of Auchenharvie Academy, I would like to thank DYW Ayrshire for their support with our Careers Fair and to thank all the employers who attended and made the day such a worthwhile experience for our young people.

AYR ACADEMY

Ayr Academy hosted a career event for S2/3 pupils to support them with career information during the period they are making their option choices for next year. Many local businesses across a number of sectors provided their support by engaging with the young people about their business and discussing routes and pathways. The feedback from the young people was overwhelmingly positive, with many returning home to discuss their new ambitions that they had discovered at the event. Pupils will use their booklets that they completed whilst circulating the businesses to help them to determine areas of possible interest that they may wish to pursue, making their option choices more targeted and meaningful. As a new DYW Coordinator in post, this event was made possible and successful largely by the support given in the lead up by the Chambers of commerce.

KILMARNOCK ACADEMY

Kilmarnock Academy were able to reinstate our Annual Careers Fair for the first time since 2019. Pupils of all age ranges S1-S6 were able to gain valuable insights and information to assist them in making informed decisions about their future in further education, training or employment. There were over 20 businesses in attendance covering a range of different sectors. Pupils had the opportunity to move around and speak to the visitors with many meaningful conversations taking place.

The pupils left the event with a huge amount of further reading materials and a greater insight into their future career paths.

EGGER BARONY

Three Ayrshire schools took part in EGGER Barony’s ‘Make Off’ competition, which was hosted at its plant in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire. Stewarton Academy, East Ayrshire; Greenwood Academy, North Ayrshire; and Kyle Academy, South Ayrshire, all submitted a team.

The schools were asked to design, calculate, and manufacture a mechanical solution to sort hack chips, sawdust and recycled material into separate groups. Each team had up to £500 to spend on materials to build the solution. The teams presented their submissions at the plant and had to demonstrate the process during the judging process.

Gail Millar, from the Ayrshire Developing the Young Workforce team was on site, and EGGER’s Plant Management team was the judging panel.

The judges were impressed by the creative designs and efforts from the entrants, noting that each team had created a completely different design, yet all were viable options.

The teams, and their supporting teachers, were given the opportunity to tour the East Ayrshire site. This gave them an insight into the process involved in the manufacture of EGGER’s wood-based panels and the engineering involved. More specifically, they saw

where their separation solution would be involved during the production process.

The winning team was Kyle Academy, supported by the Principal Teacher of Design and Technology, Sarah Cooper. They were awarded £2000 worth of equipment for their school's technology department and each team member received a £50 voucher. Both Greenwood and Stewarton Academies received £1000 worth of equipment for their technology departments, with each team member receiving a £25 voucher for their participation.

All of those involved enjoyed the challenge, the site visit to EGGER Barony, and their prizes!

Hopefully it was inspiring for some of Ayrshire’s future engineers!

KEIR CONSTRUCTION

Kier Construction has been appointed by NHS Ayrshire & Arran to deliver Foxgrove, a mental health facility in Irvine. It will be the first medium secure adolescent inpatient service for young people in Scotland. Foxgrove will be an inpatient unit for children aged 12-18 years who have complex difficulties and need a high level of care.

The new unit will comprise of 12 en-suite bedrooms, a dining area, recreational areas including a gym and sports barn, external relaxation and horticultural areas, therapy and education space.

Throughout the construction of the new centre, we have been engaging with DYW Ayrshire who have introduced us to local schools. Recently we

GSK MOCK ASSESSMENT CENTRES

GSK mock assessment centres evolved from a comment made several years ago by one of our new apprentices. They talked about how the application process was quite complex, but the worst part was the assessment centre as they had no idea what to expect and therefore couldn’t prepare. The STEM team recognised just how valid that comment was, particularly as more and more companies were starting to incorporate assessment centres into their recruitment process.

We looked at several options and came up with the idea of running a mock assessment. This gives young people the opportunity to participate in a cut down version of the real thing by taking part in three activities. The first is a practical assessment which involves following instructions given as part of a demonstration, then using basic tools to replicate the task. This gives an insight into their listening skills, attention to detail and hand/

eye coordination. The next is an individual test where the candidate receives written information and must make decisions based on the data. This shows how they interpret information and use it to make decisions. The final activity is an interview skills workshop where candidates are taken through the process of using the STAR format to prepare responses to interview questions based on their own experiences.

Each assessment centre is capped at 15 participants. This ensures each segment is kept to a small group and everyone gets a chance to take part. As GSK apprentices are always involved in delivering the mock assessments, participants get the opportunity to ask them lots of questions. This is particularly useful if they are considering applying for an apprenticeship, but regardless of their career choice, mock assessments offer young people a great insight into how large organisations recruit which will hopefully benefit them in the future.

Apprentices from EGGER are given a positive future through ATT training

Graduation of successful apprentices from EGGER (UK) Ltd has reinforced ATTs’ place as one of Scotland’s most successful, and thorough, apprenticeship training organisations.

Photographed at EGGER’s Barony plant in Ayrshire are three candidates with their PIABC Scottish Vocational Qualification Certificates. The certificates form part of a Scottish Modern Apprenticeship in Wood and Timber Industries.

The candidates work within the international wood-based materials manufacturer facility situated just outside Auchinleck a state-of-theart site with the capacity to manufacture over

400,000 cubic metres of chipboard products per year.

Andrew Paterson, Section Leader of Raw Board Production, at EGGER, said “ Unlike our long established Mechanical and Electrical Apprenticeships at EGGER Barony Plant, our Production Apprenticeship was started fairly recently and developed onsite alongside ATT Training. It’s been great to see our first two apprentice complete their training and go on to progress in their careers with EGGER and I’ve been delighted with the support and training received from ATT as we work constantly to improve and refine the 4 year apprenticeship. We look forward to continuing to develop our

existing and future candidates throughout the program and their further careers at EGGER.”

1. Reset heating and lighting timers

Change timers once the clocks change or you could be paying to heat and light your premises when staff are not there.

2. Change thermostats

Drop thermostats a degree. Your colleagues probably won’t notice but you could when the heating bill arrives.

3. ‘Switch-off’ lights when not needed

More daylight means not routinely reaching for light switches. A quick way to save is to encourage people to switch-off lights in rooms that are not being used, such as meeting rooms and cupboards.

4. Get your lighting free

Open blinds, declutter windowsills, and let the light shine in. Your energy bills will feel the difference. Natural daylight improves productivity and wellbeing too.

5. Relax dress codes

Can staff have freedom to dress appropriately for the warmer conditions? Short sleeves over suits could mean you don’t need the aircon as much.

6. Hot desk

Getting a temperature that keeps everyone happy can cause office unrest. It can crank up heating and aircon bills too. As most buildings have warmer areas (next to equipment) and cooler areas (near the doors), why not allow staff to sit where they feel most comfortable.

7. Upgrade lighting

If you have older lighting, upgrade to newer technologies, such as LEDs.

8. Get free advice and funding
