Sivan-Tamuz-Av-Elul 5782
From Rabbi Lerner Building a Vision Back in the olden days, many schools required students to memorize texts, particularly poetry. In my Jewish high school, this was especially true in our biblical studies courses. While there is debate around this pedagogic approach, there is no doubt that some of those passages, or parts of them, remain with me decades later. A salient example is the opening verses of the book of Isaiah. In verse one, the text reads:
“The prophecies of Isaiah son of Amoz, who prophesied concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ah.az, and H.ezekiah, kings of Judah.” Here we find the root: h.et, zayin, heh twice - as a noun (h.azon) and as a verb (h.azah). It is a classic opening to a prophetic book (see Obadiah and Nah.um, for example), a superscription informing us that this is a book of prophecy - sacred and insightful that views the world differently.

President's Message My Turn, Our Turn My family first heard about Temple Emunah when we lived in California back in 1992. Some fellow congregants from Congregation Beth David in Saratoga had been members of Temple Emunah and told us to put our daughter Alyssa’s name on the waiting list for the preschool. My husband’s family knew Rabbi Bernard Eisenman and his wife Billie Eisenman from living in Denver, Colorado. Rabbi Eisenman had officiated at my sister-in-law’s wedding; my mother-in-law had taught in the Hebrew School with Billie Eisenman; and Shira Eisenman was my mother-in-law’s teaching assistant. Before we even arrived, we knew that Temple Emunah would be our home and our community due to our family connection with the Eisenmans. Referrals from our friends at Beth David gave us even more encouragement to join. Ever since joining Temple Emunah in June of 1992, we have immersed ourselves in the community. I have gotten to know the community through the preschool, my work on the Keruv Committee, my teaching in the preschool, my involvement with the adult education committee, and regular Shabbat attendance. My husband Gil has been deeply involved with the preschool as past president and treasurer. I am especially proud of bringing friends to study with me at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. When I share the programs we offer at Temple Emunah with people from other parts of the US, the response is often, “Wow, you have a great community! We don’t do Themed Minyans!” or “We don’t have access to so many professors!” or “We don’t ever get so many people for services!” Temple Emunah members are remarkably active, creative, and engaged and we benefit greatly from our proximity to universities and other synagogues. So now it is my turn to be president. I am truly grateful to Mark Bobrow, who will enjoy his new title of Immediate Past President on June 17 when we have our BBQ and Barekhu and Installation. Thanks to Mark’s hard work, as well as all the past presidents before him, Temple Emunah is vibrant and positioned to tackle any challenges that we may encounter. We owe continued gratitude to all those who have stepped forward to take a turn. I am also deeply grateful to Rabbi David Lerner, Rabbi Leora Kling Perkins, their families, each and every employee, member and volunteer, for doing the sacred work of keeping our community strong. Let’s continue to foster an environment that brings out the best in each of us. Temple Emunah is an amazing community of unique individuals! Together we can continue to create meaningful moments together! Thank you for joining me as we take our turn together to keep Tenple Emunah vibrant and strong.

Preschool Springtime Growing, Exploring and Celebrating, Oh My! Spring has sprung, and we love being outside in the warm sunshine! Our school garden is turning green again as our perennials come up. The chives are ready to eat, and the raspberry bushes are full of buds, promising plenty of summer berries to enjoy! Classes have started planting in the garden, and we look forward to summer basil, mint, tomatoes and cucumbers. In no time at all, the pumpkin vines will be taking over the garden, and the carrots and potatoes will be growing under the soil. Everyone enjoys exploring the changes in our forest classrooms and learning about all the wonderful signs of life that we observe. Children have been watching the buds appear and grow into f lowers and leaves. They love to lift up our stumps to reveal surprises u nde r ne at h, l i ke worms and salamander eggs. There are nests up in the trees, and if we watch long enough, we might see a bird returning to feed its babies. Little squirrels and chipmunks scamper past us, and sometimes we spot ant colonies and beautiful spider webs! In April, the kids loved learning about Pesah.. Our classes were filled with Pesah. activities as children worked on matzah covers, afikomen bags, seder plates, or cups for Elijah and Miriam. Our oldest students, the Pilonim, started learning to sing the four questions and even made their own Haggadot to bring home. Some classes smelled, tasted, and printed with horseradish to learn about bitter herbs or helped make h.aroset with apples and cinnamon. Sensory tables were filled with sand like in Egypt, and pyramids were built on the floors with blocks. Many of our students loved playing with our “Baby Moshe” in the basket, pretending to be Yocheved placing him in the Nile River, or Miriam following the basket along the riverbank. Some classes had their own little seders. Everyone loved to read books about Pesah. and hear the story over and over! On
our last day before break, we all came together in the forest for a Pesah. play. The teachers helped me act it out, and Moses led the children on an exodus walk (see photo below). God parted the Red Sea for us, and we followed Moses out of Egypt into the desert, where we all sat together to enjoy a matzah snack!
In May we celebrated Yom HaAtzma’ut with a parade, and we enjoyed our (pretend) well-loved annual BDPS Israel Trip (photo below). The fun never ends at Billy Dalwin Preschool! Janey Aronson, Director 781-861-0708 jaronson@templeemunah.org

Preschool / Building Enhancements Updated Sound System and More!
Thinking about the Preschool or our Kaytana Summer Program for your little one? Enrollment is still underway, but we are filling up fast. Come on in for a tour!
From mid-January through the end of March, the sanctuary and surrounding rooms (Katz, Wolk, bridal room and bathrooms) were closed off to the congregation and services moved to the Rubinovitz Social Hall (the “old” sanctuary). You may be wondering what was done and why. The primary driver for the renovation was to replace the sound system and improve the acoustics in the sanctuary. The shape of the sanctuary, while visually pleasing and interestingly designed, was no friend to acoustics and sound waves. The walls and ceiling acted like a giant reverberation chamber bouncing sounds back and forth and creating areas in the sanctuary where someone might hear the Rabbi or other speaker from the bimah five or more times delayed by microseconds. The result was muddy sound and difficult to hear sermons and services. In addition, the original speakers were mounted too high and angled in problematic ways such that the sound never reached people directly. To solve this, we strategically placed sound deadening panels across the walls and ceiling and replaced the existing speakers with a more modern cluster that hangs lower and is properly angled such that sound directly reaches the congregation. That sounds simple enough, but it isn’t. Installation of the new speakers and the panels required the use of lifts. The use of lifts required removing the pews. There was also some wiring changes that required getting into the walls. We decided to deal with several other issues as well. We installed a new rack of audio/video and computer equipment along with three cameras in the sanctuary to support Zoom calls (each provides a different view selectable by the Zoom host). A fourth camera, which was already in place, provides the view for Streamspot. We replaced the bulbs in the light fixtures with LEDs that should eliminate flicker once new control switches are installed. Finally, with support from the Beautification committee we replaced the carpet and matched its color and that of the sound deadening panels with the memorial boards. In addition to maintaining the beauty of the sanctuary, we have improved the acoustics such that anywhere you sit in the room you will hear the bimah “directly” and with clarity and volume that allow you to enjoy the experience. On April 2, we enjoyed Glatzer Shabbat in the newly renovated sanctuary. Temple Emunah thanks our vendors and the volunteers and staff who made this all possible: Murgo Flooring, our carpet vendor, who kept to the same price quoted in 2019. Religious School / Youth From the Director of Congregational Learning It’s been another great academic year! Our Religious School has met in-person, online, outside – using every inch of space on our “campus,” and everywhere in between. The fall brought with it beautiful sunny days, allowing us to use our outdoor space. Winter brought with it Omicron and, again, we pivoted, spending January and February on Zoom. Late winter and early spring brought us back to in-person learning. Throughout it all, we didn’t miss a beat! We brought back singing and Israeli folk dancing. We brought back library time. We brought back school-wide celebrations. And, we brought with us all that we learned from teaching online last year. Each classroom now has its own TV stand with a large screen monitor and laptop. Students engaged in trivia with Kahoot! Blooket – an exciting new take on the modern classroom review game – and Wordwall. They watched BimBam videos and continued meeting with partners in Haifa and tour guides in Jerusalem on Zoom! Our Youth Program ran in-person, indoor and outdoor activities. We were outdoors at Kimball Farm, Honey Pot Hill Orchards, Boundless Adventures, Nashoba Valley, Mount Wachusett,
Patriots Place, Six Flags New England and in Emunah’s courtyard and Lexington Town Center. We were indoors at Boda Borg and Kings Bowling. And, we elected a new LUSY Chapter Board. It has been a jam-packed year! There are so many people who contributed to our success this year. Thank you to Seth Maislin, who is finishing up his tenure as Vice President of Education, to Norma Gaffin and Allison Page, who are finishing up their four years as co-chairs of the Religious School Committee and to Jodie Parmer for serving as Youth Committee Chair this year. Thank you also to all those who ran and participated in our Mishloah. Manot Fundraiser. A special thank you to Nancy Capparelli and Marci Hopkins, chairs of the Mishloah Manot Fundraising committee. Between COVID and a teacher shortage, we really needed to think creatively to provide our programs with the proper staffing this year. We also had the challenge of finding space in our building for all of our classes given restrictions on the number of people we could have in any given location due to COVID. I am indebted to our clergy, Rabbi David Lerner and Rabbi Leora Kling Perkins, my partner “in crime”, Tova Weinronk, and our teaching and advising staff, some of whom stepped into classroom roles this year: Kfir Mizrahi, Aaron Tornberg, Leah Rochbert, Irit Hamami, Rachel Raz, Aron

Thank you to the Temple Emunah Sisterhood and the Speicher family for their support of our madrikhim and enrichment (music/Israeli Folk dance) programs. This summer we will again have children at Jewish overnight camps and teens traveling to Israel. We look forward to seeing all of them at the end of the summer. Thank you to Samantha Brody, who joined our staff this year as our Jr USY Advisor this year, as well as a member of our YAD staff. As we look toward next year, I want to welcome Sydney Bluman (photo at left), who will join Tova Weinronk and me in directing our Education Program (Religious School and Youth Activities). Finally, as always, thank you to all our parents and children for being on this journey of Jewish living with us! You are truly a blessing in my life! Mark your calendar for the opening of Religious School 5783 and Fall Youth Day, both of which will be on Sunday, September 11. On behalf of the staff of our education and youth programs, I wish everyone a relaxing and healthy summer. Kayitz na’im (pleasant summer),
A Blessing for those off to Summer Camp or Israel It won’t be too long before our kids will be off to camp or Israel for the summer.

Minyan Story / Minyan Katan A Supportive Community
Minyan Katan
I am not a member of Temple Emunah, but I have been welcomed and embraced by the “regulars” at morning minyan since November 2021. Our grandson tragically passed away from cancer early that month. When I spoke with our Rabbis at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, they recommended contacting Rabbi Lerner about attending minyan at Temple Emunah. Daily minyan is not a part of the usual Reform practice, and my family generally is not very observant. But I am traditional, and I felt strongly about having someone say Kaddish for Zachary. After speaking with Rabbi Lerner, I was eager to participate in the morning services. I planned to attend morning minyan for the shiva week to say Kaddish. I found the experience with your congregation to be so supportive that I continued beyond shiva through Shloshim. Three months later, I continue to attend minyan at least a few mornings a week. Several of the messages of the Shacharit service serve as reminders of the way people should morally and altruistically conduct their affairs. So many of those passages in the Hebrew and the English recur to me throughout each day. They truly instruct me and guide me in living my life b’tzelem Elohim, in the image of God. To be wrapped in my tallit and tefillin and embraced by your members several mornings a week has helped me through times of terrible despair and loss and provided reminders of what it means to try to be a good person. Your congregation will have my thanks l’dor v’dor. – Stuart Kleeman (Belmont)
We are saddened by the passing of Sam Silverman, one of Minyan Katan’s longterm members. We fondly remember Sam’s welcoming presence and his willingness to engage in conversation on any number of diverse topics. In April Minyan Katan hosted a live outdoor Post-Pesah. Pizza event at the home of Leon and Joelle Gunther. The event began with Havdalah and continued with the consumption of h.ametz obtained from the Upper Crust of Lexington. It was both a great way to finish Pesah. together and a tasty return to the eating of h.ametz. In May Minyan Katan hosted an at-home in-person outdoor Kabbalat Shabbat, including live music and a potluck dinner. Minyan Katan’s annual planning meeting will take place on Sunday, June 12 from 4-6 pm at Temple Emunah in the social hall. At this meeting we plan our agenda for the coming year and we solicit volunteers to coordinate individual events and activities. All who are interested in participating in Minyan Katan are welcome to attend. In other news, congratulations to Susan Lutwak for winning this year’s WERS-FM Chagigah Movie Maven contest. The finals took place at the WERS-FM studio on May 1. Ken Maser

Library / Ladle Fund Library News
Ladle Fund Update
Our Portable Library (located in the lobby of Temple Emunah) features a selection of books by Emunah authors, and some of our new fiction and nonTemple Emunah Library fiction titles. You can borrow these books and also choose books from the Library, which is open on Sundays. At other times, someone in the office will let you in. To borrow a book, just sign the book card in the back of the book and leave it for us to record. You can also request books or renew them by emailing emunahlibrary@gmail.com. You can now borrow books for the whole summer, until the end of September. This year, because of COVID, volunteers have been going to the classrooms to read books, rather than each class coming to the Library. After the reading, three kids at a time visited the Library to check out books. Todah Rabah to Me’ir, the teachers, and all the volunteers who helped to make this new system work We compiled the circulation statistics for the last few years and discovered that over half of the titles borrowed are children’s books (2340 in the last five years) and Adult Fiction is the second highest category, 11%. We request that you wear a mask when inside the Library, and there is a limit of five people at one time. WE ARE UNABLE TO ACCEPT BOOK DONATIONS AT THE PRESENT TIME! Please don’t leave bags or boxes of books in the lobby or Library. If you email us about a specific book, we may accept it. We will gladly accept all the overdue books in your house – especially children’s books. If you want to keep the book(s), just ask us to renew it/them. Have a great summer!
The Ladle Fund is committed to supporting our community during the remainder of the COVID-19 pandemic (and after) by fostering community connections through participatory events. THEME NIGHTS!! - Looking Back, Looking Forward Since our last bulletin we were fortunate to have had a great Theme Night: Jewish Family Traditions hosted by Bob RussmanHalperin on May 31 marked our return to in-person theme minyans! Attendees shared how they bless their child/children, celebrate holidays in their own funny, serious or peculiar ways, and other creative family traditions. Have an interest you want to share with others at a Theme Night? Please contact Bob Russman-Halperin (bob.halperin@ gmail.com) or Joelle Gunther (joellegunther@gmail.com) and we will make it happen. Potential Ladle Fund events in the planning stages: We are working with the Membership Committee (Méli Solomon, Ladle Fund contact) to set up New Member events throughout the year. The group is actively reaching out to new members. It will be so good to welcome new members into our community and put faces to the names. New members were specifically invited to our May 15 social event to build community after our long isolation during COVID. Emphasis was on fun with short guided 1:1 conversations on fun topics. We welcome applications for funding activities and events that will encourage community connections. As we gradually return to in-person events, we look forward to hearing from you about what activities interest you. Sisterhood What an amazing year Sisterhood has had during this second full year of the pandemic! I’m not sure that sounds correct, but it is. In March of 2020 everything came to a crashing halt and none of us knew what to do. How do we go on? How do we capture our audience? How do we help those in need? How do we approach the next day? These were all things that we had to figure out and we needed to do it fast. Fast forward two years later, and I can’t believe that we are still adjusting our lifestyle to the newer variants of COVID, that continue to take us down. I just looked back to my summer bulletin article from 2021. So many things sound the same, yet I have high hopes that we’re coming out of the pandemic stage. I must admit that I am very proud of Sisterhood for all that we have done to help sustain the temple and provide for our community. Since May of 2020 we have successfully managed in the virtual world. Highlights of this past year include: • Rosh Hashanah Honey Sale • Repair the Sea with the Climate Committee • Brotherhood/Sisterhood Holocaust program with Beth Lane • Sukkah City Dinner and Movie • Comedy and Deli Night w/Brotherhood - presentation by Seth Front • Sidewalk H.anukkah candle sales drive • Soup, Sips and Smore’s Havdalah with the Ladle Fund • Tenement Museum in NYC virtual tour • Torah Fund Event Honoring Terri Swartz Russell with Seltzertopia program presented by Barry Joseph • Mishloah. Manot support to the Religious School • Dick Wissoker panel donation of $1800 • Sound system donation of $5000
And many more financial donations to the religious school (USY, Grade 3 Siddurim, music program, support for aides, USY program and sponsoring the Etz Hayim gift to B’nai Mitzvah students’ w/Brotherhood) and by making further donations to Temple Emunah’s operational budget. It is most important to mention that all of our sponsored programs were FREE of cost to the participants. So many members of the community have shown support to Sisterhood through donations and flower sponsorship. That has helped us to make all of this happen. If you wish to support Sisterhood, you can do so by making a direct donation to Sisterhood, by flower sponsorship (contact Sheila Kojm at Bimahflowers@gmail.com) or by adding your name to membership ($36.00) on your due’s commitment forms. Sisterhood’s Operating Committee will continue to work over the summer to come up with a 2022/23 calendar of events and will continue to add additional programs throughout the year. Although I like to say 2023 will be better than 2022, I’m not sure I can – as 2022 turned out to be a great year with all your support – which I know will continue into 2023. Looking forward to many more program ventures and to meeting in person again soon! L’Shalom, Janet Goldberg, Sisterhood President janet.goldberg2@verizon.net

June 4-6 Join us for Tikkun Leyl Shavuot All-night Learning, Food, Friends & Fun Saturday, June 4, beginning 9:00 pm
Brotherhood Shalom H.averim! Summer will be upon us shortly, and warm weather with it. The Brotherhood is looking forward to more in-person activities, and to being able to root for our Temple Emunah Softball team as it takes on the other shuls in the league! Brotherhood Shabbat was celebrated in May with Parashat Emor (Leviticus 23:23-24:23). We hope you joined us for this annual tradition. I want to thank Scott Lerman for organizing and managing the event, and all the Brotherhood members who participated. Yasher Koach! Brotherhood members also enjoyed the Memorial Day Whiskey tasting, on May 29. We tasted some great whiskey as we ushered in Memorial Day. As the year winds down, there are some things I’d like to call out: • During the summer we are planning to set up some more informal get-togethers, such as Brotherhood Beer-call at the Mighty Squirrel, maybe a couple of times. Come for the beer, come for the camaraderie, or both, but we hope you will join us. • Our Man of the Year event to celebrate the contributions of David Geller is an event we agreed should be held in person. After consulting with David and the Temple Emunah office, we decided to push the date out until after the end of the summer. Stay tuned for notices with the new date and time. We hope you will come and celebrate David’s many contributions to Temple Emunah! Also, you can sample the beer the Brotherhood brewed for this occasion! The New England Region is holding some fun events this summer that we encourage you to participate in as well: • The 75th annual Retreat at Camp Ramah, June 9-12: http://www.nerfjmc.org/theretreat • The Tour de Shuls, June 26, an annual bike ride to raise funds to support the Tikvah pr o g r a m at C a mp R a m a h: http://www.nerfjmc.org/tourdeshuls • Woo Sox game at Polar Park, Worcester, on Sunday, July 10. Kosher food will be available. Enjoy the parking, food and game for less than the cost of parking at Fenway!
Finally, as my presidency draws to a close, I want to thank all the board members for the past two years who have helped to keep the Brotherhood vibrant and strong during the COVID crisis. We couldn’t do a lot of in person events, but we did a TON of stuff to keep engagement high and support our fantastic shul. Yasher koach to everyone! Please welcome our next president Scott Damsky, as he begins his term and leads the Brotherhood going forward. Mazal tov, Scott! As I always say, if you are looking for a way to get more involved with Temple Emunah, the Brotherhood is a great way to do it, and to meet some great men. Feel free to reach out to me, or any other member of the Brotherhood board, for more information, or just join us for a board meeting (everyone is invited). Please be sure to check our events calendar at https:// www.templeemunah.org/calendar/ to see what’s happening! I wish everyone a wonderful summer! David Rosenbaum, Brotherhood President brotherhood@templeemunah.org

Rabbi Message (continued from page 1) H.azon is usually translated as a prophecy. But what does it mean to prophesy? Does it mean simply to see into the future? Or is there something deeper? H.azon literally means a vision, a perception with the eyes. Thus, these prophets had the ability to see things differently from the way others could. They were able to look at society with a critical eye and were not afraid to step into politics or call out the powerful. Bible scholars see Isaiah as two or three distinct books with distinct authors. The author of the first half of what we call Isaiah lived in the Northern Kingdom of Israel (the ten tribes referred to as Israel) around 740-700 BCE. He saw the external challenges that would befall the Jewish people, warning them repeatedly. At the same time, he noted internal societal fissures including the growing disparity between rich and poor and the corruption. But Isaiah also gave the people hope; he deeply believed that they could overcome the difficulties that were on the horizon. Isaiah and other prophets of those centuries understood the world around them and held out a h.azon, a vision for the future, along with the encouragement that has sustained us for these millennia.
incredibly grateful to the hundreds who volunteer to make our community all that it is, especially during COVID-time. We also have the opportunity to sharpen our h.azon, continuing to take stock and re-envision our future. While we may not be able to foresee all that awaits us, we know that we need to engage in new and varied ways, strengthening our bonds and building an even more dynamic, caring and compassionate community. What do you want Emunah to be in your life? What are your spiritual, educational and communal needs? What would you like to see? What are the challenges before us and how can you help us address them? What are the new ideas we should explore? How can each one of us be part of this shared future? How shall we approach our campus? Our staffing needs? And what is our financial vision to address all of this? And most of all, what other questions should we be asking? As we have evaluated ourselves over the years, let us explore what our future holds to help us maintain our relevance in our ever evolving communal framework. It’s time to explore. Over this summer, we will look forward to sharing our ideas in constructive and helpful ways. As I write this, our community just adopted a new lay * * * * * structure that reflects our current needs; yasher koah. to all Today, too, we have no shortage of people presenting us who worked on that for several years. We are also grateful to with their analyses of our situation. Our newspapers and the the staff and volunteers who have designed our renovated internet are filled with op-ed columnists and bloggers who sanctuary with sound and video improvements, as well as are keen to offer their perspectives on the world’s challenges: the installation in the courtyard of our seven species panels climate change, threats to democracy, COVID and the war in which we hope to dedicate in the fall. Family Table Temple Emunah Needs Your Contributions ….And JF&CS’s Family Table Needs All of Us! Week after week, month after month, and year after year, we at Temple Emunah have, consistently committed ourselves to donating boxes of whole wheat crackers and bags of brown rice to those in the wider Jewish community who are in need of additional support to feed their families. During the past two years, despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic, we have collected funds to purchase foods requested by Jewish Family & Children’s Services (JF&CS). Michelle Abramson has ordered foods and has had the food delivered directly to the agency on Main Street in Waltham. Temple Emunah has not missed a beat and through your kindness we have assisted numerous individuals. Some of the people served required temporary help while others have an ill family member unable to contribute towards the purchase of basic food items. As COVID slowly retreats we hope to once again ask you to bring your food donations to the building and place them in the box at the main entrance of the synagogue so that we can then drop the food off prior to the upcoming distribution date. If you, or a member of your family, (teenagers who drive are welcome to help) is available to help us collect and deliver the food please let one of us know. We have had loyal volunteers for many years but we are always in need of back up support. If you are available to pack and deliver food on the distribution days of June 26 and/or July 24, please contact Lisa Katz at JF&CS. 781-693-5593. You will need to have an updated CORI form on file to participate. Children are welcome to come to assist with the packing and with the delivery as well. Please fill out our this brief Family Table Application to sign up. Email familytable@ jfcsboston.org if you have questions. All volunteers age 18 and older must undergo a JF&CS CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) background check and those age 12 and older need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. This documentation is due two weeks prior to the distribution. JF&CS believes that an important part of healthy eating is learning how to prepare tasty meals at home. Family Table creates and adapts recipes for clients that are simple, nutritious, and inexpensive, costing less than $2.50 per serving. The recipes highlight easy and creative ways to use the fresh and frozen produce, as well as whole grains, beans, lean proteins, and other foods provided. New recipes are offered at each distribution. All our recipes are also available in Russian and are prepared by a Registered Dietician.
We thank you for your ongoing generosity and support of Family Table be it food, financial donations and service to JF&CS. Without you we would not be able to fulfill our commitment. You make everything possible. Todah Rabbah! Join The Mak’haylah!
It is that time of year again when buds and shoots appear and we anticipate the joy nature can bring. Our Woodland Garden took a bit of a hit with COVID and the Solar Panel installation; however, we are back on track to bring it back to life. Keep an eye out for major clearing of overgrowth and the creation of wide paths and new groupings of plantings. In May, Jeremy Marin led the preschool and religious school families in a morning of weed pulling. Thank you to all who participated. The beautiful Seven Species Panels have been installed on the Temple Courtyard. You can enjoy them now while you keep a watch for their dedication. Thank you to Ruth Super for the amazing inspiration and design of the panels and for Susan Rubenstein for coordinating the project. The Landscape Committee always welcomes new members and new ideas. Please contact us if you are interested. Art Kreiger and Joelle Gunther Landscape Committee Co-chairs
I invite you to consider joining The Mak’haylah, our Temple’s chorus. We are eager to have new members. The Mak’haylah rehearses about three times per month on Tuesdays between 8-10 pm. New members are always welcome. There are no auditions and the ability to read or sight-read music is not required, though such abilities are helpful. One can have religious experiences in various ways including words, meditation, righteous deeds and music. The Mak’haylah enhances the spiritual and religious experience of its members through song. Moreover, The Mak’haylah provides a service to the community: at some of Temple Emunah’s religious services and functions, as well as to the outside community.
Our repertoire grows steadily and includes liturgical, Zionist, Yiddish, Holocaust, Jewish celebrational songs, and classical music with a Jewish theme. For the High Holidays, we sing for Selichot and prior to Yizkor on Yom Kippur. In December, we give concerts at retirement facilities, such as Waterstone-at-Wellesley and Hebrew Senior Life in Roslindale. Prior to Pesah., we sing a set of arrangements of Pesah. songs by the celebrated Israeli composer Yehezkel Braun. And finally, we perform for our Yom HaShoah service. Noteworthy was our premiere performance of the piece “Songs in Response to the Shoah” by Adam Jacob Simon, that we commissioned for Yom HaShoah 2012. I invite you to open our webpage, where you can listen to some of our performances: https://www.templeemunah.org/community/makhaylah For more information please contact me, Leon Gunther, the Director of Mak’haylah, by email: lgunther18@gmail.com or by phone: 781-704-9821.
