Attending to other audio-visual narratives

4 FEBRUARY > 25 MARCH

BIdeOtik

Video-creation, the art of narrating reality BIdeOtik, the Azkuna Zentroa - Alhรณndiga Bilbao video-creation programme, came about 5 years ago with the purpose of attending other audio-visual narratives and other ways of resorting to video to tell stories. Similarly, it is aimed at generating a meeting place between the public and the people who work behind these projects. It is a place to share audio-visual creations and promote dialogue on the creative processes and different film trajectories. Over these years, the programme has aroused interest among those seeking to enjoy audiovisual projects and those wanting to know the ins and outs of audiovisual production.

With the change in the management of the Centre in 2018, a reflection process was launched, among other reasons, to add value to the Azkuna Zentroa trajectory and optimise programming, by creating connections between people and contemporary culture. The purpose was to influence context while contributing to the construction of a more creative, critical and diverse society. The result of this reflection was the startup of new projects and update of others, such as BIdeOtik. The support for contemporary creation, which defines this new stage, has led us to encourage participation regarding audiovisual creation with the launching

BIdeOtik

for the first time of a public call. BIdeOtik is already a consolidated programme in the Centre, in which 50 professionals and students have already taken part and created very diverse audio-visual works. The launching of this call allows us to have access to unexpected collaborations and verify the convening power of this programme, which has turned out to be huge. Over 300 works from local and international artists and video-creators have been presented from which some of the works to be screened during 8 weekly sessions were selected. These works are feature films and short documentaries which include animation films, biopics, and family stories, some of which are first works. In the selection of works, we have placed particular emphasis on those produced from 2017 onwards, dedicated to that which, over the last years, has been called non-fiction film. Such works have been created from an aesthetic perspective and contemporary audio-visual practice, and tackle topics related to personal experiences, biographies and life stories. This is the case of the 3 films we open the programme with, i.e. Woman (2019),

by Raúl de la Fuente; Brothers in Syria (2018), by Víctor Suarez; and Born in Gambia (2019), by Natxo Leuza. They reflect the reality of populations that live in a situation of constant repression and violence or are obliged to flee from situations of conflict in their countries of origin. With Le ciel, la terre et l´homme (2018), by German director Caroline Reucker, we discover the simple nomad and subsistence lifestyle of families living in the Moroccan desert, likewise their wishes and feelings of belonging. The programme continues with the curated film [M]otherhood (2018), by directors Laura García Andreu and Inés Peris Mestre, which defends normalisation of non-maternity in a documentary project which deconstructs society’s myths that continue to judge women who do not want to be mothers. This film was selected based on the way it handles such a sensitive yet real subject which crosses borders and lends a voice to different generations and professionals from different fields. Basque video creators Jorge Moneo – Orbainak (2019)– and Oier Fuentes –Azken saskia (2017) and Gogor atzea (2018)–

BIdeOtik

have recovered vital recollections and experiences from previous generations whose stories have survived time. Domestic matters, migration, care, aging, and oblivion are topics intimately related to the daily lives of families. In Andrómedas (2019), director Clara Sanz focuses on how these topics co-exist in a fragile balance that topples when one of them disappears. Marc Serena lends his voice to Juan Tomas de Ávila Laurel, a political refugee persecuted for denouncing Teodoro Obiang’s dictatorship. His work, El escritor de un país sin librerías (2019), plunges us into the reality of Equatorial Guinea, one of the most isolated African countries, upon gaining independence from Spain 50 years ago. Una dedicatoria a lo bestia (2019), by ‘nucbeade colectivo’ (Quiela Nuc & Andrea Beade); Patchwork (2018), by María Moneo; and Capas (2018), by Celia Dosal & Roxana Popelka, represent different female perspectives through women belonging to diverse generations and life experiences. We close the programme with the Basque Country premiere of the documentary Zumiriki (2019), by Basque director Oskar Alegria, selected together with [M]otherhood (2018) via curatorship. It is an inspiring imaginative film to rethink life and reconnect to nature, which received an ovation at the last Mostra de Venecia.

This film, which shares the values of this new stage of BIdeOtik, has been chosen to close the programme. BIdeOtik has evolved though it maintains its differential value as a meeting point focused on exchange and dialogue on audio-visual creation, and a space for cultural and social reflection and transformation. Therefore, all the creators of these works will be present in the sessions to explain their motivations and creative processes to us, besides getting live feedback from the audiences attending this programme. We hope it will be an interesting and enriching exchange for both parties. See you at BIdeOtik.

Fernando Pérez, Rakel Esparza, Itxaso Díaz, Ainara Bilbao. 5

Woman Raúl de la Fuente

2019 // Documentary // Spain In Mozambique, the case of Josina Machel, daughter of the first president, shows that gender-based violence makes no distinction between social classes. Other women suffer terror daily, with no means to defend themselves. Their gender defines them from birth, society wants them to surrender, and male violence kills them. Now, a new generation of powerful polyhedral, passionate struggling women raise their voices to combat inequality through hip-hop, rap, poetry, justice and social movements.

And what is at the end of this line? Will old battle songs suffice to navigate that fate? Orbainak (2019) is Moneo´s first solo film. 2019 // Documentary // Basque Country «I went to the forest because I wanted to live with a purpose; to tackle on my own the essential facts of life, and see whether I was capable of learning what it had to teach me, as opposed to realising, when my time came, that I had not lived it». That is how Walden starts, and how Thoreau, Oskar Alegría, spent 4 months alone in the forest searching for a reconnection with his roots and nature. The shipwrecked Crusoe of ‘Zumiriki’, an island in the middle of a river, that Alegría awaits among tiny rituals, discoveries, recollections and a peculiar sense of humour. An inspiring imaginative film to rethink life and reconnect to nature, which received an ovation in Venice.

BIdeOtik

«‘Zumiriki’ means ‘the island in the center of the river’, in Basque language, spoken in that area and already lost. The film also wants to play with that. The word is sunk, like the island itself, but with the magic of cinema we can steal death its last word».

ZINEMATEKA With over 30 years’ in the city, Zinemateka maintains a programme with classic movies and more contemporary creations. It is one of the basic pillars of our audiovisual programme, which allows us to delve in-depth into film language knowledge via non-mainstream works. This programme is developed with local and international specialists in the sector with a different track record.

Classic films In 2020, Zinemateka continues with its classic film cycle dedicated to the ‘jewels’ of film history. When making our selection for this transversal review, we have given priority to quality, the importance of these titles in the common imaginarium, and the necessary recognition of both men and women who have made history in this art form.

Contemporary films At the same time, this year’s first contemporary film cycle will be Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema, by film director and critic Mark Cousins, in collaboration with Zinebi, the Bilbao International Festival of Documentary and Short Film. Women Make Film is an exceptional analysis of film history through the lens of some of the best female directors worldwide, all of whom are women. It is narrated by Tilda Swinton, Jane Fonda and others, and written and directed by Mark Cousins. Life, love, politics, humour and death are spelt out and examined in this unique road movie.

ATTENDING OTHER AUDIO-VISUAL NARRATIVES BIdeOtik, the Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao video creation programme, focuses on creations with a differentiation factor in relation to other ways of recording and representing audio-visual vocabulary. The aim of this programme is to provide visibility for artistic audio-visual creation as a cultural social creation, reflection and transformation tool, fostering the use of new languages through moving images and digital art. Furthermore, the format, as a meeting place and space for reflection and dialogue with creators, provides an important differential value.
