Azkuna Zentroa, the film spot in Bilbao El Films are one of the expressions which reign in our mission to connect society to contemporary culture fostering critical knowledge and diversity. This art form has historically contributed to the education, construction and expansion of innumerable spectators and, in the midst of the 21st century, is undergoing a transformation process. Azkuna Zentroa is observing what is going on during this new period and responding to the communities of audiences’ demands with new proposals that may be attractive, enriching and interesting. Today, this response has been articulated in Azkuna Zentroa´s own programme by seeking to contextualise contemporary audio-visual expressions in the History of Film, thereby continuing as the HQ of Bilbao Zinemateka since it opened to the public, with over 60,000 spectators to date. Thanks to its long history and programming of in-depth cycles dedicated to the screening of non-commercial films in Bilbao, it has become the most well-known public institution for film buffs throughout Bizkaia. The box office success with its 50 Gems in the History of Film programme, with over 8,000 spectators (showing films by Fellini, Varda, Lubitsch, Riefenstahl, Godard, Bergman and Lupino), by no means overshadows its history, where film buffs have been able to enjoy large retrospectives dedicated to unforgettable stars, such as Orson Welles, Joan Fontaine, Theo Angelopoulos and Dorothy Arzner, among many others. In its commitment to contemporary audiovisual, Azkuna Zentroa also holds onto its event with BIdeOtik. Attending to other audiovisual narratives. This programme aims to create awareness of both the local and international artistic audiovisual community and their works as a social creation, reflection and transformation tool.
The audiovisual is also the source of projects undertaken in the Centre via artistic creation accompaniment programmes, such as Kinu, driven by the Tractora cooperative as part of Azkuna Zentroa´s Resident Collective programme, or the presence of associated artist Laida Lertxundi during 2021. She will start working this year on the project Ocho Encuentros to stimulate the setup of a productive artistic community with a view to creating new audiovisual materials. The Golem Alhóndiga multiplex cinemas are one of the strengths of our Centre in cinematographic screening. The operator specialised in film screening, distribution and production not only attracts spectators to commercial premieres but also those from different film productions worldwide. The way Golem Multiplex Cinema Alhóngida understands cinema is on a par with Azkuna Zentroa´s strategy, committed to and based on their vocation of holding a meeting with the public. It broaches film culture in its widest sense beyond the industry trends, working in conjunction with local and international specialists in the medium, who follow different career paths. Thanks to this collaboration, we undertake stable programmes on classic and contemporary films, premieres, festivals, thematic cycles as well as the most avant-garde audiovisual narrative programme.
Gaylesbotrans Film & Performing Arts Festival. This programme section also contributes to the complicity of external cultural agents like the San Sebastian International Film Festival, with which ties have been strengthened to support the Centre artistic collective in the awareness and development of their projects. Via this audiovisual programme, which has been running for 10 years, the aim has been to respond to the essential goals of the Centre, i.e. to create and strengthen a stable community as the main tool to both attract and involve new publics, besides retaining and rewarding those who have been loyal; and to bring the audiovisual creation processes closer to them via a programme aimed at going beyond the screen projection. To this end, the collaboration of as many cultural promotion agents as possible in the city is required. It is also vital to generate programmes as a starting point for the production of new audiovisual works, and to propose and keep a programming connected to the contemporariness of today’s society’s realities, which must compulsorily be included in each of the different Azkuna Zentroa programme lines through their ‘reciprocal contamination’.
Apart from the offer screened and promoted in the audiovisual sphere, the Centre clearly stands out as the great film mecca of Bilbao, a reference point for the communities of audiences as well as a meeting point for creators and visitors all year round. The city’s main film festivals are screened here: ZINEBI. Bilbao International Festival of Documentary and Short Film; FANT. Bilbao Fantastic Film Festival organised by the Bilbao City Council; Zinemakumeak Gara! Film festival produced by women; the Bilbao International Invisible Film Festival ‘Film Sozialak’ (likewise the Film Caravan produced by women ‘Among Filmmakers’); and Zinegoak. Bilbao International

For a decade, Azkuna Zentroa´s Zinemateka has maintained a stable programme that serves both classical cinema and more contemporary creations. This is an audio-visual programme environment that furthers the knowledge of the cinematographic and audio-visual language from works which are outside the commercial genre and market. Throughout the years, and carrying on with the work started three decades ago in the city, the Zinemateka has gone through the filmography of prominent film directors such as John Ford, Pedro Almodóvar, Dorothy Arzner, Michelangelo, Joan Fontaine, Buster Keaton, Roberto Rosellini, Christine Vachon or Richard Fleischer.
Description Programming of film cycles linked to contemporary reality and classic film films.

Following the 50 gems in the history of cinema cycle, a transversal review of the best creations of recent years, the Zinemateka brings the focus onto auteur creations by means of a selection of the filmography of eminent directors in the history of film. And it does so with the cycle dedicated to Pier Paolo Pasolini (Bologna, 1922 - Ostia, 1975), one of the most relevant film directors and poets of the second half of the twentieth century. And with the retrospective on a key figure in Spanish cinema, Luis García Berlanga (Valencia, 1921 - Madrid, 2010), coinciding with the centenary of his birth.
ZINEMATEKA BEGINS IN 2021 WITH THE PROGRAMME DEDICATED TO PIER PAOLO PASOLINI, PROPOSES AN ODYSSEY OF THE MOST SIGNATURE TITLES OF HIS EXTENSIVE FILM PRODUCTION, SCREENED IN 35 MM; AND AND CONTINUES WITH LUIS GARCÍA BERLANGA IN COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE VALENCIAN FILMMAKER.

BIdeOtik. Attending to other audiovisual narratives meets some of the elements comprising today’s reality. It addresses the audiovisual essays, documentaries, animated shorts and debut works proposed by 17 creators, chosen from an open call and a curated process, who suggest other perspectives related to what we live individually and as a society. The aim of BIdeOtik is to raise awareness of cultural and artistic audiovisual creation as a social creation, reflection and transformation tool, fostering the use of new languages via moving images and digital art.

The current time of adaptation and transformation has led to the inclusion of online sessions via the Filmin platform, in addition to the face-to-face ones. This new BIdeOtik channel enables the expansion of the process in space and time, while adding new communities of audiences to this avant-garde audiovisual art. Thus, every Tuesday Golem Alhóndiga Multiplex Cinemas launch a new session, where the screenings on this online channel will be available for 6 days. The films comprising the 2021 programme were chosen from over 250 films presented at the open call between 15th June and 31st October 2020 via the Festhome platform.

Kinu is the project that Tractora Koop. E. launches within the Resident Collectives Program in Azkuna Zentroa. It is a tool for sharing creative experiences and, through them, opening fertile spaces for the production and training of local agents. For this, an artist is invited quarterly. The project consists of two parts: a public presentation and a working group (Lantaldea). The quarterly sessions begin with the screening and public presentation of the guest artist’s work, followed by a small discussion. After each public presentation, there is a session directed by the artist together with a stable working group (Lantaldea), whose dynamics are tailored to each guest.
Description Quarterly meetings to see and discuss audiovisual productions by artists.
More information kinu.group kinulantaldea@gmail.com @kinu_lantaldea
Finally, the project is completed with a text (Distirak), prepared by a person from the working group, in which the experience of each Lantaldea is collected. Tractora Koop. E. is an artists’ co-operative founded in 2013. Usue Arrieta and Ainara Elgoibar develop the Kinu since 2019, conceived as a platform for programming, viewing and discussing audiovisual productions by artists; a quarterly meeting point in which an artist is invited to present his/her work and share with him/her a workshop to reflect as a group on that type of practice and its specificities.
KINU AIMS TO BE A PLATFORM FOR PROGRAMMING, VIEWING AND DEBATING ON ARTISTS’ AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTIONS. IT IS A QUARTERLY MEETING POINT THAT INVITES AN ARTIST TO EXHIBIT HIS/HER WORK AND SHARE IT IN A WORK SESSION FOR A GROUP REFLECTION ON THIS KIND OF PRACTICE AND IT SPECIFICITIES.

Laida Lertxundi, an AZ associated artist since January 2021, launches her project 8 Encounters, a project that consists of eight collaborative workshops and shootings that will result in a 16 mm work. Each encounter is made up of two parts: the first of them consists of a workshop that will be held with a guest artist and will take place in Azkuna Zentroa’s spaces. The second part will take place in the mountains of Bizkaia. These shootings will incorporate scores and exercises composed by a variety of artists and writers, in an attempt to rethink the ‘making of the film’ as a joint performance within a natural environment, as well as a pedagogical experiment outside the confines of academic institutions.

Each of the eight summits will consider a specific process within the phases of traditional film production (location, interpretation, script, soundtrack, production, camera, lighting and editing), resignifying them to transform them into a specific set of ideas and parameters with which to create a work of moving pictures. The material results of these 8 Encounters will then be conbined to create a 16mmm film. Laida Lertxundi. An artist and filmmaker who lives and works between Los Angeles and the Basque Country. Combining conceptual rigor with sensual pleasure, her films establish parallels between the earth and the body as centers of pleasure and experience. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries such as MoMa (NY); Tate Modern and Whitechapel Gallery (London); Angela Mewes (Berlin); Joan and Human Resources (Los Ángeles); Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (Colombia) and the Bienal de La Habana, among others.
Her work is distributed by LUX in London and is part of the collection of the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. In 2020 she received the Gure Artea award for Basque art.

This year’s slogan Sin género de duda (Without a Gender of Doubt) is a pun referring to two different ideas. On the one hand, it refers to the commitment to holding this year’s edition, which will adjust to the current Covid-19 safety restrictions. To this end, the Festival has joined forces with Filmin, where viewers will be able to enjoy the Festival sections as well as other special cycles. And, on the other hand, the slogan responds to the official poster created by artist Helena Goñi, where the photograph shows 4 young people with dyed green hair in varying degrees of intensity, helping create awareness for an entire generation who lives its gender identity in a natural way.

It is a generational portrait that shows in a natural and friendly manner that all the work that has been going on in recent years regarding sexual diversity awareness and education, is being accepted in our society in an organic way and is becoming embodied in younger generations. Matters like ‘non-binary person’, ‘gender-neutral’ or ‘fluid-gender’, among others, are a reality we are already living with. And it is not necessary to know what each term means exactly, but rather that gender identity limits have expanded and all options are valid.
