BIdeOtik
Everything we are living through at the moment, the confinement, the loss, the identity issues, territorial conflicts, struggles, searches... the BIdeOtik. Attending to other audio-visual narratives programme brings together some of the elements that make up this reality. These are the audio-visual essays, documentaries, animated short films and debut films by which 16 creators chosen in a combination of open competition and curatorial process, propose other ways of looking at what we are experiencing as a society and as individuals. The aim of Bideotik is to showcase the artistic, cultural and creative aspects of audio-visual works as a tool for creation, reflection and cultural and social transformation, promoting the use of new languages through moving images and digital art. At this current time of adaptation and transformation, an online format has been added to the face-to-face sessions through the Filmin platform. This new BIdeOtik platform will allow us to expand our reach in space and time, enabling new audiences to experience the latest audio-visual art. A new session will premiere every Tuesday at the Golem Alhóndiga cinemas and on the online channel, with screenings available for six days. It is a six-week journey that starts by revisiting the spaces we inhabit, the memories and the places we belong to; it continues with introspective searches, identities, losses and struggles; and closes in sensorial territories of images and colours far removed from urban spaces.
Fernando Pérez, Rakel Esparza, Ainara Bilbao, Itxaso Díaz.

Melisa Liebenthal

2019 // Essay // Argentina - France Aquí y allá (Here and There) is an essay-film that studies what being at home means. The filmmaker uses photographs, maps and Google Earth to connect places around the globe, not just from her own past, but also from the complex migratory history of her family that stretches back to Hitler-era Germany and Mao’s China. The real and the virtual prove equally confusing: here or there? Perhaps both, at the same time.

«Aquí y allá (Here and there) is an impressive fusion of technical virtuosity, cultural heritage and migratory history. Tony Pipolo (Artforum, September 2020)

She is a Film graduate at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains in France. 2018 // Documentary short film // Germany - Spain Pirate Boys brings us closer to the experiences of several transmasculin characters, in relation to Kathy Acker’s literary work and Del LAgrace’s photographic work. Merchan, in this film, shot in Super 8, connects his experience as a trans person with that of Acker and Del LaGrace, while reflecting on the plasticity of the physical body, literary body and film. A linguistic and cinematic world that refers to the vital experience of the artist himself through the combination of cuts: literary and textual cutting, and cuts on their own bodies and breasts, as well as visibility and affectation in their bodies of the hormone testosterone. Merchan uses the cut-up resource and relates it to the bodily transformations of trans people, in addition to generating a complicity towards Acker, as his pieces were made from the appropriation, collages and copying of other authors.

SESSION 5 | BIdeOtik
«Kathy Acker’s writing, and a seminal portrait by the intersex photographer Del LaGrace Volcano, provide a framework for exploring trans subjectivity and queer cinema. Pol Merchan’s hybrid doc moves fluidly from documentation of the punk era to a more performative exploration of the genre». Pol Merchan
Pol Merchan is an artist, filmmaker and programmer of the Xposed International Queer Film Festival Berlin. He has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and a master’s degree from the Art in Context program at the University of Berlin. His audiovisual work explores visual semantics and cinematographic practices, deconstructing the techniques of conventional cinema. Merchan uses the camera as an extension of his eye and his body, creating intimate works that emphasize the body as its own language. Working through film, photography, and text, his artistic practice addresses transgenerational connections and the archive of oral history. His film Pirate Boys was supported by the Xposed Queer Short
Film Fund and nominated for the Lichter Art Award at the Lichter International Filmfest in Frankfurt.

A month of single frames Lynne Sachs
2019 // Documentary short film // USA In 1998, filmmaker Barbara Hammer did an artistic residency in a cabin with no running water or electricity. During the time she spent there, she devoted herself to filming and kept a diary. In 2018, Barbara began the process of her death by revisiting her personal archive. She gave all the material from that residency to Lynne Sachs and invited her to make a film. Lynne explores Barbara’s experience of loneliness. She includes text on the screen which contrasts with the somatic cinema that brings us together in multiple spaces and moments.

«While editing the film, the words on the screen came to me in a dream. I was really trying to figure out a way to talk to the experience of solitude that Barbara had had, how to be there with her somehow through the time that we would all share together watching her and the film». Lynne Sachs
Fellowship in the Creative Arts and Tender Buttons Press published Lynne’s first book Year by Year Poems in 2019.

Lynne Sachs is a filmmaker and poet who grew up in Memphis and is currently living in Brooklyn, New York. Her moving image work ranges from short experimental films, to essay films to hybrid live performances. Between 1994 and 2006, she produced five essay films where she looked at the space between a community’s collective memory and her own subjective perceptions. Looking at the world from a feminist lens, she expresses intimacy by the way she uses her camera. Strongly committed to a dialogue between cinematic theory and practice, she searches for a rigorous play between image and sound, pushing the visual and aural textures in her work with every new project. 2019 // Documentary // Spain Somewhere on the Spanish plateau, a sheepherder dreams of traveling to Titicaca, a retired musical duo recalls its golden age, two girls search for Pokemon with no luck, and a grandfather counts the empty houses of the town to fall asleep. The characters in this film appear as the geographical features of a territory whose culture and lifestyle seem to fade away over time. That territory is the true protagonist of this story. In an almost surrealistic observational tone, Meseta takes the form of a mapfilm that travels through the past, present and futureof the Spanish countryside. A sensory journey through the landscapeof an empty Spain.

«Meseta is a walk that immerses the five senses of the viewer in uninhabited rural Castile. Between each of the landscape frames lies a critique that calls for the abandonment of rural life. Without a doubt, it is a claim showing its best face». Lucía Blazquez (Cinemagavia, October 2020)
Juan Palacios, with a degree in Environmental Sciences and Audiovisual Communication, is a filmmaker who lives and works in Amsterdam. His work is found between the essay film, the observational documentary, the field notebook and the experiment. With a special predilection for the borders between human culture and nature, he uses images of a factual world without apparent staging to create an alternative universe. His first feature film Pedaló won the Irizar Award at the 2016 San Sebastián Film Festival and the Best Documentary Feature Award at the Bushwick Film Festival in New York in 2017. His second feature film Meseta premiered at the CPH: DOX del 2019 where it was awarded an

BIdeOtik | CINEMA IN AZKUNA ZENTROA
Cinema in Azkuna Zentroa At Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao we tackle film and the audiovisual media in a broad context via stable programmes, premieres, festivals, thematic cycles, etc., in dialogue with the rest of the Centre programme and in conjunction with different agents and bodies.
ZINEMATEKA For a decade, Zinemateka has maintained a stable programme that serves both classical cinema and more contemporary creations. This is an audio-visual programme environment that furthers the knowledge of the cinematographic and audio-visual language from works which are outside the commercial genre and market. Throughout the years, and carrying on with the work started three decades ago in the city, the Zinemateka has gone through the filmography of prominent film directors such as John Ford, Pedro Almodóvar, Dorothy Arzner, Michelangelo Antonioni, Joan Fontaine, Buster Keaton, Roberto

Rosellini, Christine Vachon or Richard Fleischer. Following the 50 gems in the history of cinema cycle, a transversal review of the best creations of recent years, the Zinemateka brings the focus onto auteur creations by means of a selection of the filmography of eminent directors in the history of film. And it does so with the cycle Poetry Made Film dedicated to Pier Paolo Pasolini (Bologna, 1922 - Ostia, 1975), one of the most relevant film directors and poets of the second half of the twentieth century. And with the retrospective on a key figure in Spanish cinema, Luis García Berlanga (Valencia, 1921 - Madrid, 2010), coinciding with the centenary of his birth.
