Trywru, meaning ‘Three Rivers’ is one of several variations of the name given to the present day ‘Truro’ by early settlers, due to the three rivers which run through it. Now only the larger two, Allen and Kenwyn, rivers remain visible. Once confined to the triangular boundaries created by the two main rivers, Truro has grown over the centuries with each generation developing it further, and leaving its mark. This series of work follows the Allen and Kenwyn rivers from their sources to their convergence point at the tidal Truro River. The project serves not only as a topographical reference, but as an exploration of the very heart of Truro, reflecting the demands of contemporary society on a journey through rural idyll to port city.

During a particularly stressful day at college, Geena Flolight accidentally causes trouble for a loathsome classmate, using the power of her mind alone. Realising she may possess the supernatural ability of psychokinesis, Geena becomes inspired to perfect her mental skills, using nothing but a far-fetched internet guide and a selection of junk found around her house. As the final short film produced for his education at Truro College, ‘Geena Flolight’ is a very different effort to Thomas James Baker’s previous work. Having produced several dramas and documentary shorts, Thomas opted to create something more fantastical and humorous for his Specialist Production to diversify his range as a filmmaker. With this, he settled on a science-fiction comedy with psychokinesis and the interest people have in pseudoscience as the central theme. The subject matter also allowed Thomas to expand upon his special effects skills, using wires and other equipment to “levitate” objects, which were later digitally erased in Adobe After Effects.

Being a Girl This project is going to focus on ‘Being a Girl’. Not a woman, or female, a girl. When looking at the word ‘girl’ it has many connotations, denotations and stereotypes that come along with it. But for me it’s that vulnerable inbetween stage, the transition of girl to women that I'm interested in. I guess for me being a girl is about that unity of the female species. We are all similar but all so different. With girls there are many layers and that makes us a mystery to the other sex. Girls are complex; they can go through so many feelings and thoughts a day. We have crazy hormones and mood swings especially around ‘ the time of the month’.The best thing about being a girl is being a girl around other girls being girls. You feel empowered and proud. Girls spend hours, days, months and even years worrying about looks and how they are not perfect. But its the imperfections that are beautiful and that’s what I want to capture. Girls have so many rules and regulations to follow. Which can be frustrating. we have to change our bodies to fit into society. I want to capture these feelings of what its like to be a girl today.

Human Nature I have three passions in life; one is life itself and the environment, two is photography, and three is from doing this degree which has helped me realise that I love to be creative with my photography. My exhibition last year comprised of images of multiple exposures. The theme was paths in the woods and was done by taking ten exposures and layering them into one image. This years exhibition is about people and the environment-mainly wooded areas and how we feel and think about it. I have made images of peoples head and shoulders then layered an image of a wooded area on top, then rubbed out around the the head and shoulders to leave a plain background. In the plain area there will be a verse of a poem which has been written by Claire Martin. Each verse will be added to each image. This will c.leavy@sky.com

consist of a set of six images, with a verse on each one.

Elemental Elucidation: An exploration of language within the landscape Who has not stood at the top of a cliff and marvelled at the raw pulling power of the wind? Who has not stood in the crisp cool sea and felt the urgent tug of the tide between their toes? If you have not experienced this then you are to be frank missing out a little bit on life. The exhilaration and sense explosion that can be experienced when a fragile human interacts with the majestic supremacy of the elements is one that is not to be missed. We as a race are obsessed with curtailing the full impact of the elements. But, what if one was to embrace those elements and run with them? Claire Martin is an artist and poet who under her pen name Lowenna Loves has exhibited a variety of works in galleries throughout Cornwall. Her latest work Elemental Elucidation plays with the world between literature and life. The piece is formed by transient elements, moving, changing, oscillating between states of being. The artist as creator and witness is the only validation for the existence of the piece, the elements creating then destroying the fragmentary lexicon. The viewer is invited into a private audience with the artefact via a projection installation; prints of the poems are available via direct contact with the artist, details of which can be found below. ‘Keep out’ is the familiar hand made sign taped to my daughter’s bedroom doors, occasionally with the discretionary ‘no boys allowed’. Often referred to as the tween years, children between 9–13 years of age are straddling the fence between childhood and choice. On the one hand, they are beginning to branch out in their lives, looking to new horizons, taking on new responsibilities. Yet, as children, they still look to their parents to guide them about what is right and what is wrong; they still longingly seek for approval and support from the adults who surround them. The awareness comes early to a tween that her room is her sacred place, a domain to be protected by no one but herself. The room is the first territory that the girl creates for herself. The stages of her development can be seen in the elements of bedroom design. Some girls are industrious in making their rooms an extension of their personalities. Posters are tacked up and collages of quotes and friends photographs are collaged. Others keep bare walls – or do they have a choice? The attachment to the security of youth is still present in the form of stuffed animals and toys. But lipsticks, electronic devices, make up and numerous mirrors are present in abundance. As they look in the mirror they ask, ‘who am I?’ and ‘what will I become?’. Tweens are facing life’s first great crossroad: the decisions they make today will last a lifetime.

Living Legacies This project explores culture’s relationship with architecture, and how architecture itself has shaped our culture. By photographing historical buildings throughout Cornwall, Bath and London, it becomes apparent that we utilise our history to fit our needs. Depicting abandoned structures that at some point became of ‘no use’ and are allowed to deteriorate over time, leaving them to become sad symbols of our past. Some buildings continue to serve their original purpose, whereas others create a seat of learning, merging cultures and histories that never met at their time of creation. The integrity of these buildings are often built upon in order to move with the growing demands that they must endure. Modern features are becoming more and more apparent, developing grand, often classical structures, into something much more, or attempting to replicate a building’s original appearance. This photographic series demonstrates how old and new merge into one, from the subtle to the audacious. This makes us question why we, as a society, keep renovating and changing, and why we cannot keep things the way they are. Are we so obsessed with keeping up with the times that we forget about the heritage and history we could be destroying in the process? Are we living up to the hopes of these Living Legacies?

Asa Samuel

Asa Samuel - Spring at Trengwainton Spring is one of the most exciting times of year and where better to see it than Trengwainton Gardens. With exotic plants and trees that have been nurtured on 25 acres of land for generations, there is so much to see around the gardens during the spring months. At Trengwainton spring starts early with magnolias flowering first, and rhododendrons and large waxy foliage appearing next; there is plenty to see at all times of year, but spring is possibly the best. Thinking of springtime conjures up many different memories for different people, but the themes are usually the same; getting back out into nature with your family after the long winter. Spring at Trengwainton is a documentary which shows the exciting experience on offer at the garden to get people out into the countryside in Cornwall. Asa is an up-and-coming natural history documentary film maker who has already produced work for the National Trust as part of his education at Truro College. As the final project for his course, Asa has chosen to continue on part of a series of work documenting National Trust properties in Cornwall, and as Trengwainton is one of the best places to be in Spring it was a natural choice for his next film.

Sam Lara Contact: Samlennon94@hotmail.co.uk Interested in the development of screenwriting, specifically the writing process for television, I try to create productions with strong dramatical elements, accompanied with comical aspects for humourous relief, just like some of my favourite television series. My previous productions can all be regarded under the Sci/Fi genre, which is something that I have thoroughly enjoyed doing. However, for my most recent project, ‘The Deal’, I have decided to experiment with a new genre. The Deal is a story that follows the methods of two brothers that have found themselves producing their very own homemade drug that soon becomes a highly sought-after product due to it’s substantial quality. This soon results in a kingpin from the local drug community wanting to form a partnership with the brothers. I have depicted the creation and distribution of the drug through montage, which has been a new experience for me.

Connor Phoenix In 2008 Capcom released the video game ‘Street Fighter IV’ and revitalised the fighting game genre. Now that competitive gaming tournaments give away millions of dollars in prizes, and have hundreds of thousands of people watching live, esports are beginning to be considered legitimate sports and the pro players are beginning to be seen as professional athletes. Warzone is the story of competitive fighting games in Cornwall. Rural areas like Cornwall generally have little going on in terms of competition when compared to larger urban areas.

Without competition high level play was impossible to find, but with the ability to train with others around the world via the internet that is no longer a problem. The documentary investigates the players who challenged the norm and started the competitive community in Cornwall, following them as they tell their story of the past seven years and give their opinion on the future of competitive video games in Cornwall.

James Terris

James is an animator and aspiring screenwriter, whilst pursing scholarly interests in literature, media and culture. His creative output focuses on particular questions, regarding the influence of technology and the media, on the way we perceive, construct and negotiate with society. The stop-motion animation Shifty Ways was developed from a short poem, building on and extending it’s symbolism. Film-poetry, in contrast to the filming of a poetry reading, seeks to use the visual medium to add meaning to the textual interpretation, exploiting the form to make it integral to the work rather than simply a means of dissemination. He is currently developing an original screenplay based upon the character of O’Brien from Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. The short-film sees the Ministry of Love interrogator nearing the end of his life having fled to California after the collapse of European Stalinist Socialism. Josh Billington The Helston Skatepark Project was inspired by the lack of extreme sports facilities, and the poor conditioned of the ones we do have in Cornwall. V3ast is a movement promoting healthy living and active lifestyles with a passion to empower youth and engage them to build social capital. Every child deserves the right to play, and every child deserves the right to be safe. We want to bring those two statements together. V3ast is building on the expansion we have seen in skateboarding in Cornwall. However, despite the growth of this sport, there has been no proof of councils or communities following suit and providing spaces for this growing culture. V3ast plans to change that. This video helps explain the situation that local enthusiasts find themselves in, where the culture is demonised despite the unlimited creativity they insert into skateboarding. Focusing on the creative nature of the sport and the wellbeing of youths who actively engage in skateboarding, the film tells their stories, shares their lives and expresses their feelings in order to help a confused population understand the need for the public support of skateboarding. Joshua also provides other media related work and is hugely passionate about charity work or work for a cause. For more details or enquiries contact his freelance email at: joshuabmedia@outlook.com Joshua Billington the founder of the company and the creator of this video encourages you to contact him with any enquiries v3ast@hotmail.co.uk

This is a short film about the Cornish 1000cc grass track racer Jed Trewin, and his wife Marline. The film explores what it was like to be a 1000cc grass track racer, and what it was like to be the partner of a racer. Jed won many races, made more than a few news headlines and also became nationally well known. After many years of racing too many breaks to his leg, after a series of crashes, led to amputation and the end of his grass track career . Not only was Jed a talented racer he was also a talented mechanic and was able to use his skills to help raise money for Bob Geldof’s Band Aid project. Jed went over to Sudan, Africa and worked with a team of mechanics to fix the aid trucks that carried supplies to refugees. Unfortunately this experience turned out to be somewhat different to what Jed had expected and he found himself with an almost impossible task. Jed and Marline continued their passion for motors as they transferred the knowledge and skills they had gained to building their own trikes, which allows Jed and Marline to keep on riding.
