uando nos convertimos en padres hacemos todos los esfuerzos que están a nuestro alcance para que nuestros hijos tengan la mejor educación, vayan a los mejores colegios y hablen varios idiomas.

Les inculcamos con nuestro modelo los valores que consideramos más importantes según nuestras prioridades, pero en las últimas décadas hemos tendido a facilitarles mucho la vida. Con esta actitud, en muchos casos, les hemos convertido involuntariamente en gente “cómoda” y dejan de un lado la tenacidad y la perseverancia.

Alguien que sabe mucho de esas cualidades, es María Marte, natural de Jarabacoa. En el año 2003 llegó a España cargada de ilusiones, sus inicios fueron complicados pero siempre confió en sí misma. Comenzó a trabajar fregando platos en un reconocido restaurante y años

después se viste la chaqueta de chef y puede presumir de haber conseguido dos estrellas Michelin (El Club Allard).

Al cierre de esta edición suma a sus estrellas el Premio Nacional de Gastronomía a la Mejor Jefe de Cocina otorgado por la Real Academia de Gastronomía de España.

En este caso podemos añadir “el más difícil todavía” pues María es la única mujer en Madrid con dos estrellas Michelin y se mueve como “pez en el agua” en un mundo de hombres.

María no atesora grandes títulos pero sí un gran abanico de virtudes que como dice ella “es una prueba irrefutable de que con pasión, vocación y dedicación todo se puede conseguir”.

Nos preparamos para en el próximo número traer a María a su tierra aunque sea a través de bacana. ¡Enhorabuena!

s we become parents we do our best in order to provide a good education to our children, to attend to the best schools and speak several languages.

We instill in them our model, the values we consider most important as to priorities, but in recent decades there is a tendency to make easier children’s life. This attitude, in many cases, has involuntarily resulted in turning them into “lazy” people and set tenacity and perseverance aside.

Someone who knows a lot about those qualities, is Mary Marte, a native of Jarabacoa. In 2003, she came to Spain full of hopes. At the beginning things were complicated for her but she has a lot of confidence in herself. She began to work washing dishes at a renowned restaurant and years later she already wore a chef coat and can boast of having achieved two Michelin stars (El Club Allard).

At the end of this edition, she adds to her stars, the National Gastronomy Award for best Chef awarded by the Royal Academy of Gastronomy in Spain.

In this case we can add “even the harder one” because Mary is the only woman in Madrid with two Michelin stars and moves like “fish in water” in a men’s world.

Mary doesn’t treasure major titles but a wide range of virtues as she says “it is an irrefutable proof that with passion, dedication and devotion you can get everything.”

For the next issue, we are preparing for bringing Mary to her homeland even using Bacana efforts. ¡Congratulations!

HISTORIA / HISTORY a Universidad de Santo Domingo fue creada el 28 de octubre de 1538 mediante la bula papal In Apostolatus Culmine, concedida por el papa Paulo III, convirtiéndola en la primera institución de educación superior de América. Con el nombre de Universidad de Santo Tomás de Aquino, no fue reconocida oficialmente por el Reino de España hasta 1558. Esta bula lo que realmente hizo fue elevar a la categoría de universidad al Estudio General que los dominicos regentaban desde el año 1518 en Santo Domingo.

La Universidad española de Alcalá de Henares le sirvió de modelo para sus ideas, al igual que la de Salamanca para su organigrama. Pero esta institución no ha tenido un funcionamiento continuo debido a los acontecimientos políticos de la isla. Así, en 1801 la ocupación haitiana hizo que los dominicos abandonasen la colonia y no será hasta 1815, cuando los españoles la recuperen, cuando la institución abra sus puertas, aunque esta vez con carácter laico y estatal. En 1822, el régimen haitiano ordena a los estudiantes alistarse en el servicio militar, por lo que vuelve a cerrarse.

MÁS ACONTECIMIENTOS Durante los años siguientes hubo diferentes intentos para su reapertura hasta que el 31 de diciembre de 1866 se crea el Instituto Profesional, que sustituye a la universidad. El 16 de noviembre de 1914 el presidente de la República, Ramón Báez, transforma por decreto dicho instituto en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo.

he University of Santo Domingo was founded on October 28, 1538 by papal bull In Apostolatus Culmine, issued by Pope Paul III, turning it into the first institution of higher education in America. By having the name of University of Santo Thomas Aquinas, it was not officially recognized by the Kingdom of Spain until 1558. What really this bull did was to concede Universal status to General Study ran by Dominicans in Santo Domingo since 1518.

The Spanish University of Alcalรก de Henares was taken as a model for its ideas, like Salamanca, for its organization. However, this institution has not had a continuous running due to political events on the island. Thus, the Haitian occupation made the Dominicans to abandon the colony in 1801 but the Spaniards recovered it in 1815 and the institution opened its doors, but this time having secular and state characteristic. In 1822, the Haitian regime ordered students to enlist in the military, so it is closed again.

MORE EVENTS During the following years there were various attempts to reopen it and on December 31, 1866 the Professional Institute was created replacing the university. On November 16, 1914 the President of the Republic, Ramon Baez, by decree, turned the institute into the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.

La dictadura de Rafael Leónidas Trujillo convierte a la institución en un instrumento de control y propaganda política. En diciembre de 1961 la universidad logra su propia autonomía. ¿DOS INSTITUCIONES? Algunos historiadores hablan de la existencia de dos universidades durante la época colonial: la de Santo Tomás de Aquino y la de Santiago de la Paz. Apuntan que el Colegio Santiago de la Paz, construido gracias a la donación de Hernán Gorjón, recibió del rey Felipe II una real cédula, el 23 de febrero de 1558, con la que se funda la Universidad de Santiago de la Paz, que en el año 1602 se convertiría en un Seminario.

Por su parte, las primeras referencias que se tienen de la Universidad de Santo Tomás datan de 1632. Los dominicos defienden que es la primera en la isla amparándose en la bula papal de 1538 y en la real cédula de Felipe II, la concedida a la Universidad de Santiago de la Paz, que en ese momento es Seminario. Posteriormente, en 1747 Fernando VI otorgó reales cédulas a las dos instituciones: una que ratificaba la de Santiago (que no tendrá bula hasta el año siguiente) y otra para la de Santo Tomás.

Para estos historiadores la Universidad de Santiago de la Paz es, cronológicamente hablando, las más antigua de la ciudad de Santo Domingo hasta su extinción en 1767 cuando los jesuitas son expulsados, mientras que la de Santo Tomás continuaba.

OTRA CONTROVERSIA Pero existe otra controversia con la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos en Lima (Perú), que reclama ser la institución más antigua de América al ser la primera creada por mandato de la Corona española en 1551 (la de Santo Tomás no recibió el reconocimiento oficial hasta 1558). Además, defiende que es la única que ha funcionado sin interrupciones desde su creación. También se apoya en el Archivo General de Indias, en el que no existen documentos oficiales anteriores a 1551 en los que se nombre a una institución anterior a la de San Marcos.

En la actualidad, la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo cuenta con una sede central y con recintos y centros repartidos por todo el país. Su modelo educativo se basa en la docencia, la investigación y la extensión. Una visita a la zona universitaria siempre resulta muy interesante, su historia y los secretos que esconde en sus muros nos atraparán, sin duda.

TWO INSTITUTIONS? Some historians refer to the existence of two universities during the colonial era: Santo Tomás Aquinas and Santiago de la Paz. They point out that the College Santiago de la Paz, built thanks to the donation of Hernán Gorjón, received from King Philip II a royal charter, on February 23, 1558, which was used for the University of Santiago de la Paz’s foundation that became a seminar in 1602.

Meanwhile, the first references we have of the University of Santo Tomas date from 1632. The Dominicans defend that it is the first on the island by referring to the papal bull in 1538 and the royal charter of Philip II that was given to the University of Santiago de la Paz, which is a seminar today. Later, in 1747 Fernando VI granted royal charters to both institutions: one ratifying Santiago de la Paz (that didn’t receive the bull until next year) and one for Santo Tomás.

For these historians, the University of Santiago de la Paz is, chronologically speaking, the oldest in the city of Santo Domingo until its extinction in 1767 when the Jesuits were expelled, while Santo Tomás remained.

ANOTHER CONTROVERSY But there is another polemic with the National University of San Marcos in Lima (Peru), which claims to be the oldest institution of America because it was the first created by order of the Spanish Crown in 1551 (Santo Tomás didn’t receive an official recognition until 1558).

Also it argues that it is the only one that has worked without any discontinuity since its inauguration. It also relies on the General Archive of the Indies that doesn’t register any official documents previous to 1551 appointed a pre-San Marcos institution.

Today, the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo has a headquarters, venues and centers across the country. Its educational model is based on teaching, research and extension. A visit to the university area is always very interesting and its history and secrets hidden in the walls will undoubtedly catch us. bacana 19

Espíritu emprendedor Entrepreneurial spirit

uando nos adentramos en uno de esos imponentes complejos hoteleros que existen en Punta Cana su esplendor nos lleva a pensar que detrás de ese concepto hay una gran corporación impersonal. Pero nada más lejos de la realidad en el caso del Grupo Iberostar, donde cada hotel tiene el sello de su fundador D. Miguel Fluxá. El grupo llegó a la isla en el año 1993, siendo el primer lugar elegido para su expansión en el Caribe.

Nacido en 1938 en un pueblo de Mallorca (España), en el año 1962 se hace cargo de Viajes Iberia, la agencia de viajes que su padre había comprado seis años antes. Fiel al espíritu emprendedor e innovador que le inculcó su progenitor, Miguel Fluxà amplia el negocio y se centra en el sector hotelero. Así, en el año 2000 nace el holding turístico del que hoy es presidente ejecutivo.

Con la máxima clara de ser internacionales, este empresario siempre ha trabajado analizando bien las situaciones antes de actuar y siendo prudente. Reconoce tener un bloc de notas y un lápiz al lado de la cama para apuntar las ideas que se le ocurren cuando no puede dormir y ponerlas en marcha al día siguiente. Conoce la importancia de saber “decir que no” y de que hay que trabajar duro para conseguir lo que uno quiere.

Con sus hijas al frente, la cuarta generación toma las riendas de esta empresa multinacional que cuenta con alrededor de 100 hoteles en 27 países del mundo y con 67.000 camas en más de 40 destinos.

Todo un proyecto de futuro en el que la innovación y la calidad son dos de los valores que les han llevado al éxito.

Cuando trabajaba de pequeño en la fábrica de zapatos, ¿pensó en algún momento en dedicarse al mundo de la hotelería?

En 1956, mi padre compró una pequeña agencia de viajes con 6 oficinas que se llamaba Viajes Iberia justo cuando yo terminé mi carrera de Empresariales, que fue una de las primeras licenciaturas en Empresariales en España. Me sentí muy atraído por este sector y hemos ido trabajando con visión y calidad a lo largo de los años para conformar lo que es hoy el Grupo Iberostar. ¿Qué le enseñó su padre?

De mi padre guardo algunas de las enseñanzas más importantes de mi vida. Tenía un marcado carácter emprendedor y confiaba en la innovación como una herramienta para conseguir siempre los 20 bacana

Thus, the tourism holding emerged in 2000 and today he is its Executive Director.

Having a clear idea of being international, this entrepreneur has always worked analyzing all situations carefully being wise before acting. He recognizes to have a notebook and a pencil beside the bed to write its ideas down once they come in his mind when he cannot sleep and set them up the next day. He realizes the significance of knowing “to say no” and making your best effort at work to get what you want.

Under the direction of his daughters, the fourth generation is in charge of this multinational company with about 100 hotels in 27 countries worldwide and with 67,000 beds in over 40 destinations.

Everything is a future project where innovation and quality are two of the values that make them to success.

When you were a little boy and worked in a shoe factory, did you think at some point in pursuing the world of hotel and catering business?

In 1956, my father bought a small travel agency with 6 offices named Iberia Travel just when I finished my career in Business, which was one of the first degrees in Business in Spain. I was very attracted to this sector and we have been working with vision and quality through years to set up what is now the Iberostar Group.

What did your father teach you?

I keep some of the most important lessons of my life from my father.

He had a very strong entrepreneurial spirit and trusted innovation as a tool to get the best results always. He instilled in us some principles that we consider fundamental in my family, like love to the profession, honesty and seriousness. The best advice he could give me was the need to be international and to promote quality as a basic

mejores resultados. Algunos principios que consideramos fundamentales en mi familia, como el amor a la profesión, la honradez o la seriedad, nos los inculcó él. Los mejores consejos que me pudo dar han sido la necesidad de ser internacionales y el fomentar la calidad como pilar fundamental de cualquier negocio que quisiese emprender, algo que ha sido fundamental en el desarrollo de Iberostar. ¿Continúa con el espíritu emprendedor e innovador que le inculcaron desde pequeño?

Emprender o innovar son acciones que van mucho más allá de una decisión puntual o un momento en tu vida, son una forma de dirigir una empresa y afrontar los nuevos retos de una industria. ¿Por qué cree que para su padre era tan importante la idea de ‘ser internacionales’?

Mi abuelo creó en 1877 la primera industria de zapatos de Mallorca y una de las primeras de España. Fue una persona visionaria en este sentido, ya que exportó zapatos antes del siglo XIX. En 1890 ya exportaba zapatos a Cuba y Filipinas, que eran colonias españolas. Él viajaba siempre allí, se pasaba dos meses y pico para llegar. Como anécdota, y según nos contaba mi padre, cuando se firmó la paz entre Cuba y España, mi abuelo tuvo que mandar un barco lleno de zapatos para los militares otra vez de regreso, porque la guerra ya se había terminado. Mi abuelo fue el fundador de esta industria y ya entonces supo de la importancia de ser internacionales.

Cuando mi padre tuvo que gestionar la fábrica, con 21 años, no había cuero ni materias primas porque el país vivía en ese momento una situación de bloqueo. Y tuvo que ir en varias ocasiones a Alemania a comprar, ya que era el único país que nos vendía por aquel entonces. Él vivió la escasez de las materias primas, las dificultades y también los problemas financieros que vivían los bancos en España. Muchos bancos no tenían dinero y mi padre tenía dinero en la cuenta y divisas fuertes con las que poder comprar la materia prima y pagar los jornales de los trabajadores.

Mi padre tuvo esta visión de abrirse al mundo y desde siempre nos inculcó el hecho de ser internacionales, para poder diversificar nuestros negocios y asegurarnos un buen futuro.

Su padre adquirió en 1956 seis oficinas de Viajes Iberia. ¿Por qué deciden dar el salto a los hoteles?

Nosotros empezamos con 6 agencias de viajes, con una facturación de 40 millones de pesetas al año. Pero de ahí tuvimos la suerte de coger todos los años 60, 70 y 80 de gran evolución turística y nos dedicamos como agencia de viajes al turismo receptivo y representábamos a grandes tour operadores.

Entonces fuimos ampliando el negocio y después, cuando ya tuvimos un cierto volumen, nos dimos cuenta que necesitábamos meternos en hoteles y fue cuando empezamos a explorar esta vía para tener una base de camas que poder ofrecer a nuestros propios clientes.

En 1986 inauguramos los primeros hoteles Iberostar en Mallorca y en las Islas Canarias. Nuestra inclusión en el mercado hotelero suponía un paso lógico por nuestra experiencia en la industria. Hasta entonces habíamos sido testigos del incremento de turistas europeos que elegían nuestro país y el valor de España como potencia turística a nivel internacional. Y queríamos ofrecerles la experiencia completa.

¿Por qué eligieron como símbolo de Iberostar una estrella?

Siempre hemos tenido claro que somos una compañía enfocada en el turismo vacacional, en el sol, el relax y la playa. La estrella de mar es un elemento que además de resultar estéticamente atractivo y versátil nos acercaba a esas vacaciones y nos recordaba todo eso que pretendíamos trasladar a nuestros clientes.

Su primera apuesta hotelera en el exterior fue, en 1993, en República Dominicana. ¿Cuál fue la razón de esta elección?

En 1993, sólo siete años después de empezar con nuestros primeros hoteles en Mallorca, inauguramos nuestro primer hotel en República Dominicana, el Iberostar Bávaro. La experiencia fue muy positiva no solamente por las playas espectaculares y los parajes naturales que ofrece la zona, sino sobre todo por la gente del país.

Es impresionante la calidez de las personas, su amabilidad, su sonrisa, su vocación de servicio, y la forma tan humana con la que tratan a nuestros clientes.

Desde entonces, durante los últimos 20 años, hemos aumentado nuestra presencia en el destino y en la actualidad contamos con seis establecimientos de diferentes características pero todos ellos ubicados en lugares privilegiados. Y continúan estando entre los hoteles mejores valorados de toda nuestra cadena. ¿Qué planes de futuro tienen en la República Dominicana?

República Dominicana es y seguirá siendo uno de los principales destinos Iberostar en todo el mundo con seis hoteles abiertos.

Nuestro objetivo de cara al futuro es continuar mejorando nuestra oferta de servicios en los establecimientos que ya forman parte de nuestro portafolio y también seguir estudiando cualquier posibilidad que pueda resultar interesante a la hora de ampliar nuestra presencia en el país.

Usted ha dicho en alguna ocasión que hay que saber decir que no en las situaciones difíciles. ¿Le ha pasado en alguna ocasión?

Obviamente a lo largo de mi trayectoria profesional he tenido que tomar decisiones en situaciones difíciles. Siempre digo que un empresario bueno, o un empresario, se tiene que juzgar por el número de éxitos y si tus éxitos son muy superiores a los fracasos, pues automáticamente eres un buen empresario. Yo, cuando hago una buena inversión siempre pienso qué es lo peor que me puede pasar y cuando acepto lo peor que me puede pasar, lo demás son ganancias ya.

Háblenos de la Fundación Iberostar.

La Fundación Iberostar nació en 2004 con el objetivo de ayudar a los países que nos habían abierto los brazos para que nosotros pudiéramos expandir nuestro negocio. Y la manera en que nosotros entendíamos que podíamos devolver este regalo era a través de la formación. Si das formación a la gente, y además les ofreces un puesto de trabajo, contribuyes de forma directa a la evolución del país donde estás presente. A través de la Fundación y en países como Brasil, República Dominicana, Jamaica o México, hemos enseñado a mucha gente que era iletrada, que no sabía escribir ni leer, les hemos dado clases de escribir, les hemos enseñado a leer, les hemos enseñado una profesión y después les hemos dado un

Do you still have the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit instilled in you since childhood?

Why do you think it was so important to your father the idea of ‘being international’?

My grandfather created the first shoe industry of Mallorca in 1877 and one of the first of Spain. He was a visionary person in this sense, since he exported shoes before the nineteenth century. In 1890 he was exporting already shoes to Cuba and the Philippines, Spanish colonies at that time. He always traveled there and spent almost three months to get there. As an anecdote, and according to father, when peace between Cuba and Spain was signed, my grandfather had to send a ship full of shoes for the military back again, because the war was already over. My grandfather was the founder of this industry and even then he knew the importance of being international.

When my father had to manage the factory at the age of 21, there was no leather or raw materials because the country was at that time a deadlock. He had to go to Germany in several occasions to buy products because it was the only country that sold us then. He lived a shortage of raw materials, difficulties and financial problems living by banks in Spain as well. Many banks had no money but my father had money in his account and hard currency to buy raw materials and pay the wages of workers.

My father had this vision of openness to the world and he always instilled in us the fact of being international in order to diversify our business and ensure a great future.

Your father bought six offices of Iberia Travel in 1956. Why do you decide to make the leap for hotels?

We started with 6 travel agencies, with a turnover of 40 million pesetas a year. But we were lucky enough to have a great tourist development of 60, 70 and 80 and we dedicated as a travel agency to incoming tourism and represented major tour operators.

Then we expanded the business and later, when we had a certain amount, we realized we needed to get into hotels and that is when we begin to explore this field to have a base of accommodations to offer to our own customers.

In 1986 we opened the first Iberostar hotels in Mallorca and the Canary Islands. Our inclusion in the hotel market represented a logical step as of our industry experience. Until then we have witnessed the rise of European tourists who chose our country and the value of Spain as tourist power internationally. We wanted to offer the full experience.

Why did you choose a star as a symbol of Iberostar?

We have always been clear that we are a company focused on holiday tourism, the sun, relaxation and beach. The starfish is an element that besides being aesthetically attractive and versatile brought us closer to those vacations and reminded us all that we wanted to transfer to our customers. bacana 25

Su sólida formación y un gran conocimiento de la industria turística a nivel global les han servido para convertirse en responsables de diferentes áreas de negocio dentro del Grupo y ejecutar su labor de manera impecable, siempre en línea con los valores y la filosofía de la marca que les he intentado transmitir desde que son pequeñas. Sin duda, Iberostar continúa en las mejores manos.

¿Cuál es el futuro del Grupo Iberostar?

Nuestra idea es ir creciendo en lo que sabemos hacer, que es el turismo vacacional. Pero creciendo con cabeza, de forma sostenida.

Nosotros evaluamos profundamente la adquisición de cada nuevo hotel y si encaja dentro de la línea de nuestro producto. Crecer con calidad es fundamental para nosotros a la hora de analizar posibilidades de expansión.

En nuestra compañía nos proponemos como reto que cada huésped viva con Iberostar unas vacaciones únicas. Bajo esta premisa trabajamos día a día y ésta seguirá siendo también nuestra máxima en el futuro.

Your first hotel bet abroad was, in 1993, in Dominican Republic. What was the reason for this choice?

In 1993, we opened our first hotel in Dominican Republic, the Iberostar Bávaro, just seven years after starting with our first hotel in Mallorca. The experience was very positive not only for the spectacular beaches and natural places of the area, but also and above all for the people of the country. It’s amazing the warmth of the people, their kindness, smile, dedication to service, and the human manners while dealing with customers.

Since then and for the past 20 years, we have increased our presence in destination and now we have six facilities of different features but all located in privileged places. They remain among the best hotels of our whole chain.

What future plans involve the Dominican Republic?

Dominican Republic is and will remain one of the main Iberostar destinations worldwide with six hotels opened. For the future our goal is to continue improving our services in facilities that are already part of our portfolio and to go on any opportunity assessment that might be interesting in expanding our presence in this country.

You have said on occasion that we must learn to say no in difficult situations. Did you have been through this?

Obviously I have had to make decisions in difficult situations throughout my career. I always say that a good businessman or entrepreneur shall be judged by the number of successes and if your successes outnumber failures, then you are a good businessman automatically. I, when I make a good investment always think what’s the worst that could happen and when I accept this, the rest is profit.

Let’s talk about Iberostar Foundation.

The Iberostar Foundation was incorporated in 2004 aiming to help countries that had received us with open arms so we could expand our business and the way we understood that we could return this gesture was through training.

If you train people and also offer them a job, you contribute directly to the development of the country where you have business. Through the Foundation, and in countries like Brazil, Dominican Republic, Jamaica or Mexico, we have taught many people who were illiterate, who could not write or read, we’ve taught them writing and reading, we have taught them a profession and we gave them a job later.

We understand that you must return to society what society has given to you and the way we find was creating jobs, educating people and this makes us extremely happy.

Your daughters are now in charge of the group. How do you see them?

The task was not easy and they have met the challenge with flying colors. Their strong background and extensive knowledge on tourism industry at international level have helped them to become responsible for different business areas within the Group and to develop their work flawlessly, always defending values and the philosophy of the brand which I tried to transmit to them since they were little. Undoubtedly, Iberostar continues in the best hands.

What role do you play now?

As Executive Director of Iberostar Group I am still leading the Group’s strategy through each of the entities that comprise it. This means that I’m still traveling and visiting destinations and hotels, even more than before!

My daughters, who are executive vice president, bring me their vision of the company and the sector as well. These opinions certainly mark the next steps of the Group.

What is the future of the Iberostar Group?

Our idea is to grow in the field we know, which is the holiday tourism but growing in a wise and continuous way. We deeply evaluate the acquisition of each new hotel and if it fits into our product line. Quality growth is essential for us when we analyze expansion possibilities.

In our company we propose as a challenge that every guest lives a unique holiday with Iberostar. Under this premise we work every day and this will also remain our utmost in the future. bacana 27

sla Catalina se ha convertido en un paraíso que encierra lo mejor del país en apenas 9.6 kilómetros cuadrados.

No hay paisaje más parecido al de las postales dominicanas que lo que encontrará en este destino: aguas cristalinas, arena blanca, fauna marina y terrestre, en fin todo lo que ofrece nuestro país, en un territorio situado frente a las costas de La Romana.

Llegar hasta Isla Catalina tampoco es muy complicado. Las embarcaciones salen de la marina de La Romana antes de las 9:00 a.m. los fines de semana.

Lo bueno es que, la mayoría de los viajes incluye el transporte, las bebidas y el almuerzo buffet en la isla. El precio puede estar entre los RD$2000 y RD$2500 por persona, dependiendo del tipo de embarcación.

El recorrido tarda unos 20 minutos y muchas embarcaciones eligen una ruta donde van bordeando la costa de Isla Catalina antes de llegar al muelle. Estas áreas están protegidas, pero las cristalinas aguas turquesas ofrecen un espectáculo digno de admirar.

Con un poco de suerte pueden verse a simple vista coloridos arrecifes de coral y pececillos de colores.

Una vez en la isla, los visitantes son acomodados en sillas de playa, además de disfrutar del mar, se puede alquilar (o llevar los propios) snorkel y hacer un pequeño recorrido. También hay grupos que equipados con un flotador nadan a unos 100 metros de la costa para observar peces, mantarrayas y con mucha suerte hasta caballitos de mar.

Para los buzos, la isla tiene un gran atractivo. Existen varios puntos que pueden ser visitados desde los novatos hasta los más expertos. Uno de los más famosos es “El acuario” un buceo pla-

centero donde la langosta, las mantarrayas amarillas y morenas son parte de la atracción. Como está entre los cuatro y 10 metros de profundidad la visibilidad es muy buena y seguro será una experiencia muy tranquila relajante para los más novatos.

El otro punto de buceo se llama “La pared” es una impresionante caída que se extiende hasta el mar Caribe. Habitada por los corales y peces vibrantes, es una visita obligada para buceo y snorkel por igual.

Por el contrario, si es de los que prefiere una estadía tranquila y relajante este también es el sitio ideal. Puede descansar a la orilla del mar bajo la sombra de una palma y la brisa que sopla por la isla, darse un masaje, caminar por un pequeño mercado de artesanías o caminar por los senderos habilitados para tener las fotos más impresionantes del la isla.

El almuerzo que incluyen la mayoría de los tours consiste en una parrillada dominicana. Pollo, chuleta o mariscos (ofrecen langosta cuando no está en veda) son parte del menú, además del típico arroz con habichuelas y una barra de frutas frescas como postre. Las bebidas (gaseosas, agua o cervezas) están incluidas.

La mayoría de las embarcaciones regresan después de las 3:00 p.m. pero si puede esperar un poco más, no se pierda el atardecer desde lo alto de la cima, recuerde que este lado de la isla es uno de los pocos donde se puede ver el ocaso del sol en el mar, un espectáculo que vale la pena presenciar.

No está de más que junto al bronceador lleve también repelente para los mosquitos. También puede llevar ropa para cambiarse ya que hay duchas y vestidores. Sin duda alguna, al final del día se dará cuenta de que estuvo en uno de los paraísos de nuestro país.

atalina Island has become in a paradise enclosing the best of the country in just 9.6 square kilometers.

There is no other landscape similar to Dominican postcards like the one you will fi nd in this destination: crystal clear water, white sand, sea and land fauna, in short, everything that our country offers, in a territory located in front of La Romana coasts.

Getting to Catalina Island is very easy. The boats leave from the marina of La Romana before 9:00 am on weekends.

The good news is that most trips include transportation, drinks and lunch buffet on the island. The price may be between RD $ 2,000 and RD $ 2,500 per person, depending on the type of boat.

The tour takes about 20 minutes and many boats choose a route that goes along the edge of the coast of Catalina Island before reaching the dock. These areas are protected, but the clear turquoise waters offer a sight worthy of being looked at. Being lucky you can see colourful coral reefs and goldfi sh by looking at them.

Once on the island, visitors are invited to settle in beach chairs and to enjoy the sea. You can rent (or bring your own) snorkel and do a little tour. There are also groups equipped with a fl oat that can swim about 100 meters from the coast to observe fi sh, stingrays and if lucky, seahorses.

For divers, the island is very charming. There are several points that can be visited for both novices and experts. One of the most famous places is “The Aquarium”, a pleasant dive where lobster, yellow stingrays and moray eels are part of the attraction. As it is just between four and ten meters deep, visibility is very good

and it surely will be a quiet and relaxing experience for novices.

The other dive site is called “The Wall” which is an impressive fall that reaches the Caribbean Sea. Inhabited by corals and vibrant fi sh, it is a required visit for diving and snorkel alike.

On the contrary, if you are the ones who prefer a peaceful and relaxing stay, this is also the ideal place. You can rest at the seashore under the shadow of a palm and the breeze blowing through the island, get a massage, and walk through a small craft market or a path enabled to take the most impressive pictures of the island trails.

Lunch including in most of the tours is a Dominican barbecue.

Chicken, cutlet or shellfi sh (lobster when it is not close season) are on the menu, plus the usual rice with green beans and a bar of fresh fruit for dessert. Drinks (soda, water or beer) are included.

Most of the boats return after 3:00 pm but if you can wait a little longer, do not miss the sunset from the top of the hill, remember that this side of the island is one of the few where you can see the sundown on the sea, a show worthy of being seen.

Silencio, se rueda, acción uedan todavía algunos minutos para las once de la mañana y su oficina esta en plena ebullición, hay gente por todos lados enfocada en su trabajo que lejos de provocarnos una sensación de “caos” nos dejan la sensación de que allí existe un equipo que funciona a la perfección. Fiel a su palabra, nos recibe a la hora indicada con esa sonrisa y jovialidad que le caracterizan y que te hace sentir como en casa. Se sienta y poca a poco comienza a relajarse, pide agua y café, café dominicano, el de su tierra y sabiendo que nos va a hablar de su pasión, nos referimos a Juan Basanta, productor y director de cine con una extensa trayectoria nacional e internacional. ¿Cómo nace Juan Basanta como director de cine?

Hay muchos cómplices en ese proyecto pero hay dos que son fundamentales. Por un lado Carlos Francisco Elías (crítico de cine dominicano e intelectual), me “secuestraba” para llevarme a “Cine prueba”, una sala para críticos dónde veíamos películas en primicia. Por otro lado, la película “Las bicicletas son para el verano” del director Jaime

Quiet everybody, action!

Chávarri, donde unos niños jugaban a la guerra en el mismo patio en el que después tendría lugar realmente la guerra. Me conmovió de tal manera que mi vida cambió totalmente. La magia de esta película unida a la sensación que me producía la idea de crear y vivir otro mundo fue básicamente la razón de no adaptarme a este.

Tuve la suerte de conocer a Jaime Chávarri a través del director español Carlos Saura y cuando le dije que su película había cambiado el curso de mi vida me respondió: “el honrado soy yo”. Mi vocación por el cine se la debo a un español. ¿Crees que el momento que se vivía en República Dominicana influyó en el impacto que te causó la película “Las bicicletas son para el verano”?

En los años 70 vivíamos en plena guerra fría en este país. Yo tenía 12 años en época de Balaguer y mi casa era allanada cada semana, el tono de violencia en las calles era muy alto. Esta situación ayudó a que se fuera haciendo fuerte en mí la idea de poder cambiar el mundo en el que vivía.

Tu juventud se desarrolla en un ambiente bohemio, ¿si no te hubieras dedicado al cine hacia donde hubieras enfocado tu pasión por el arte?

Me dedicaría a la “arquitectura” pero a esa arquitectura que le cambia la vida a la gente. ¿Cine: arte o industria?

Es muy simple, el pintor trabaja con su manos y un lienzo, para nosotros nuestro lienzo es un equipo, un equipo indivisible, arte e industria.

Si el cine es llamado el séptimo arte es por algo, es un trabajo en equipo y el reto es entenderse y encajar totalmente ese equipo.

Después de “Biodegradable”, ¿con que nos vas a sorprender ahora? Háblanos de tu nueva película La Gunguna es una pieza que adoro, producida por mí y dirigida por Ernesto Alemany, una joyita del cine dominicano,

I was lucky to meet Jaime Chavarri through the Spanish director Carlos Saura and when I told him that his film had changed the course of my life he replied, “you honour me”. I owe the Spanish man my vocation for the movie.

Do you think that the moment the Dominican Republic lived through influenced the impact the movie “Bikes are for summer” caused you?

In the 70s we were living the Cold War in this country. I was 12 at time of Balaguer and my house was raided every week, the tone of violence was very high in the streets. This situation helped me to strengthen the idea of changing the world in which I lived.

Your youth is developed in a bohemian atmosphere, if you wouldn’t have devoted to the movie where your passion for art had been focused on?

I would devote to “architecture” specifically the one that changes people life. ¿Movie, art or industry?

It is very simple, the painter works with his hands and a canvas, our canvas is a team for us, an indivisible team, art and industry.

There is a reason why the movie is called the seventh art, it is teamwork and the challenge is to understand each other and fit in that team.

After “Biodegradable”, what will be the surprise now?

Con disciplina, García Márquez -¨Gabo¨- nos decía ¨hay que tener un método, el que sea, pararse frente a una página en blanco, sentarse todos los días¨, que si él no lo hubiera hecho habría seguido siendo un “borracho marihuanero” en Baranquilla. ¿Qué puede esperar el público cuando llegue a una sala de cine el día 16?

Que espere… un tsunami, que lo va a disfrutar. Es una película coral, una historia muy simple.

Háblanos un poco de tus hobbies, Juan Mi deporte es el tenis y mi placer la cocina, me encanta. ¿Cómo ves la industria del cine en República Dominicana?

No se va a morir, al contrario va a nacer un bello cine dominicano. ¿Con qué trabajo te has sentido más satisfecho, más identificado?

Con el próximo, porque la pasión que nos mueve, la que nos hace caminar a nosotros, es lo que esta por hacer. ¿Cuál es la parte de tu trabajo que más te gusta? Una sola Encontrarme con una historia que me apasione. Cuando veo que algo puede ser narrado, puede ser cine, algo puede ser película, ese es el momento más importante.

Creo que sí, lo que más me atraía del mundo jurídico es que la prestación de estos servicios requiere de un conocimiento amplio e integral de los temas de relevancia social, cultural, económica y política, a la vez que requiere una manejo y conocimiento técnico muy exigente. ¿Tenía clara la especialidad?

Realmente no. Recién graduado de la licenciatura inicié mis trabajos como profesional en el Banco Central de República Dominicana, profundizando en mí una pasión por la regulación financiera y económica. Do you begin in legal profession by vocation?

I think so, what attracted me the most of the legal world is that the provision of these services requires a broad and comprehensive understanding of relevant social cultural, economic and political issues, while requiring a very demanding management and technical knowledge.

Did you know the field?

Not really. Once graduate of the degree I started my work as a professional in the Dominican Republic Central Bank, feeling deeper a passion for financial and economic regulation. Later I had the opportunity to study a master’s in Financial Markets Regulation at the University of Comillas (ICADE) (Madrid - Spain).

How was your experience at the University of Comillas (ICADE)?

Excellent! The benefits are twofold, first we learned about regulation, trends and new approaches to different perspectives and international jurisdictions and then we did some great relations that allowed getting deeper in academic and professional aspects.

How all this academic process has been reflected on your experience in the Dominican Republic?

First of all, it has allowed me to have a more global view of everything related to market regulation. I am currently the coordinator of Master in Law and Economics of the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher, (PUCMM), which as the main studies house of our country has allowed us to share knowledge and experiences. bacana 37

Actualmente soy el coordinador del Master en Derecho de la Regulación Económica de la Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), que como principal casa de estudios de nuestro país nos ha permitido compartir conocimiento y experiencias. ¿Actualmente sigue manteniendo contacto con sus colegas españoles?

Sí. Es muy importante mantener contactos en un mundo tan cambiante y global. El derecho antes era más estático pero en el ámbito corporativo y de negocios, los mercados financieros avanzan sumamente rápido. De hecho, crisis recientes han provocado volver al debate sobre la tradicional carrera que existe de la regulación detrás del desarrollo de los mercados. ¿Cuál es su visión de la crisis a nivel mundial?

En sentido general las causas de las crisis económicas son analizadas desde diferentes posibilidades. Sabemos que hay toda una teoría de que éstas tienen un componente cíclico; y entiendo que ello realmente se vincula mucho al comportamiento humano en cada coyuntura. En los tiempos de “vacas gordas” las regulaciones tienden a ser más laxas permitiendo a veces asumir mayores riesgos y cuando vienen las “vacas flacas” si la regulación no se anticipó puede crear problemas estructurales que fomentan la fragilidad del sistema económico y con ello escenarios de stress financiero y empresarial y, por lo tanto, social. ¿Cómo se puede explicar que la regulación no se anticipó?

Lo que hace un Estado es desarrollar políticas regulatorias y diseñar o incidir en base a ciertos principios en el funcionamiento de la economía y, por tanto, de los mercados. El concepto de regulación no se ciñe a reglamentar sino buscar un equilibrio. Desde los tiempos de Adam Smith hablamos de “la mano invisible” que expresa que los mercados tienen una tendencia natural a buscar el equilibrio, pero con el tiempo se ha reconocido que se necesitan ciertos contrapesos en las economías para evitar los desequilibrios propios de estos sistemas. Cuando esto ocurre la política regulatoria es la solución para alcanzar el equilibrio. ¿Considera que la crisis se esta quedando atrás?

La crisis es un concepto o un estado muy subjetivo, pero creo que es evidente que lo peor del proceso desencadenado desde 2008 ha pasado y que los mercados buscan ahora como aprovechar el crecimiento y la mayor estabilidad. Quizá todavía estamos en el túnel pero alguna luz se ve. En el caso de República Dominicana, que no ha estado de lleno directamente en la crisis internacional, sus efectos han sido más indirectos, pero muy importantes. Sin embargo, nuestra percepción es que ya estamos sintiendo la mejora de las economías globales y que los próximos años serán positivos. Por citar un ejemplo, el sector inmobiliario de la zona Este del país esta resurgiendo, así como la inversión turística y el turismo en sentido general.

Do you currently continue to have contact with your Spanish colleagues?

Yes, I do. It is very important to keep contact in a changing and globalized world. The law was more static before but financial markets are moving extremely fast at the corporate and business level. In fact, recent crisis have brought back the debate on the traditional course on the present regulation behind markets development.

What do you think about world crisis?

In general the causes of economic crisis are analyzed from different probabilities. We know there is a whole theory that they have a cyclical component; and I understand that it really has a connection to human behavior in every situation. In times of “boom years” regulations tend to be more lax allowing sometimes to take more risk and if regulation didn’t anticipate when the “lean years” come, it can create structural problems that encourage the fragility of the economic system and thus scenarios of financial and business stress and therefore, social.

How can you explain that the regulation did not anticipate?

The State develops regulatory policies and design or influence based on certain principles in the running of economy and therefore, the markets.

The regulation concept is not limited to regulate but to seek a balance.

Since the days of Adam Smith we spoke of the “invisible hand” which states that the markets have a natural tendency to seek balance, but over time it has been recognized that certain balances are needed in economies to avoid imbalances in these systems. Whether this occurs regulatory policy is the solution to achieve balance.

Do you think the crisis is left behind?

The crisis is a concept or a subjective status, but I think it is clear that the worst of this process triggered since 2008 has ended and the markets are now looking for the way to take advantage of the growth and stability. Perhaps we are still in the tunnel but some light can be seen.

In the case of the Dominican Republic which has not been involved directly in the international crisis, effects have been indirect mainly but very significant. However, our perception is that we are breathing the improvement of global economies and the coming years will be positive. By giving an example, real estate sector in the Eastern part of the country is reviving as well as tourist investment and tourism in general.

We firmly believe that this area is a key point for investment, not only for the real estate and tourism industry but also for a lot of activities that are taking place there. The hotel, real estate, industry sector continues growing and we decided to establish a branch there due to all of this and confidence in those processes. The eastern area is a bastion of national development.

Una vida cabalgando A life riding nicornios, caballos marinos en la mitología chilota, pegasos con alas de plumas como las aves o de cuero semejando a las de los murciélagos entre otras, han sido las formas fantásticas del caballo.

Las figuras reales las asociamos a sus servicios y también al arte en el que se ha convertido la práctica de montarlo.

A través de la historia hemos conocido de la fama inventada o no por algún concepto: caballos famosos por sus demostraciones, otros míticos, de renombre en la literatura o en la cinematografía, vencedores en carreras o los deportes hípicos, en fin han servido para sacar a la luz detalles sobre diferentes aspectos de la vida de las sociedades.

La relación que se ha establecido entre el corcel y el jockey ha sido recreada en obras literarias, pero en el fondo hay una parte sentimental y de compromiso. No estamos lejos de esa visión quijotesca: Rocinante aparecía ante Don Quijote como ¨mejor montura que los famosos Babieca del Cid y Bucéfalo de Alejandro Magno¨.

Rubén Machado ha sido uno de esos jinetes que ha mezclado la fantasía del animal mitológico con la fortaleza de la fiera que acepta ser domesticado y vivir en las estancias.

Nació en Uruguay y se crió en el campo rodeado de animales, aprendió a cabalgar antes que a caminar por lo que la equitación ha sido la piedra angular de su vida. ¿Así nace su pasión por el caballo?

No se si la pasión nace así o con la pasión se nace, pero desde muy pequeño me pasaba todo el día encima de un caballo. ¿Esa pasión le viene de familia?

Sí por supuesto, toda mi familia era gente de campo. Mi padre era domador de caballos y con él aprendí primero el oficio del hombre de campo y la habilidad para mantener comunicación con el caballo. En una segunda etapa empecé con la equitación. ¿En qué momento la equitación se convierte en una profesión?

Empiezo desde muy pequeño, con la escuela y las clases. Tras unos cambios en mi vida tenía que subsistir por mis propios medios y lo que realmente me gustaba era la equitación, me pasaba el día entero montando y así han pasado 50 años y aún no lo he dejado. Me abracé a esta profesión. ¿Hay que tener una aptitud, un don especial o es suficiente con que te guste?

No es suficiente con que te guste la equitación, tienes que tener al-

Ruben Machado has been one of those riders that has mixed the fantasy of mythological animal with the strength of the beast accepting to be domesticated and live in ranches.

He was born in Uruguay and raised in the countryside surrounded by animals, he learned to ride a horse before he even walk that’s why horse riding has been the cornerstone of his life. ¿Did your passion for horses start this way?

I don’t know if passion began this way or the passion was already inside me, but I spent all day on a horse since I was a little boy.

Does that passion run in the family?

Yes of course, my whole family was country people. My father was a horse trainer and he taught me first the trade of countryside and the ability to maintain communication with the horse. In a second stage I started riding.

At what moment riding becomes a profession?

I started very young, with the school and lessons. After some changes in my life I had to survive on my own and what I really liked was riding, I spent the whole day riding and that has been happened for the following 50 years and still. I stuck to this profession.

Do you need to have a flair, a special gift or a liking would be enough?

Liking horse riding it is not enough, you must have some particular abilities and also a fundamental condition which is perseverance. bacana 43

La principal es saber leer al caballo para entenderlo, tiene que vivir los sentimientos del caballo. Hay que saber interpretar porque hace las cosas, que expresa cuando le mira. Es un animal muy noble, nunca tiene una actitud ofensiva hacia la persona por maldad, siempre es una respuesta a una provocación nuestra por no entenderle. ¿Cada caballo tiene sus particularidades?

Sí, tengo pasión por todos los animales, tengo perros, gatos y cada uno de ellos es un ser diferente que piensa, debemos entenderlos. ¿Qué le ha aportado el caballo?

Todo lo que soy. Pero quizás lo más importante es que me ha enseñado a ser humilde, no podemos ser soberbios con el caballo. ¿En que podemos relacionar al caballo con el hombre?

En la capacidad de estar siempre dispuesto a colaborar. El caballo no es rencoroso, pero tiene mucha memoria, jamás olvida por eso tenemos que ser muy cuidadosos en el trato así como con los procedimientos. ¿Si no se hubiera dedicado a este mundo por qué profesión se siente atraído?

Mi otra pasión, la que tuve que dejar un poco relegada es la música. Vengo de una familia de músicos, ese pequeño paso por la música fue lo que me permitió desarrollar lo que soy hoy, me daba el sustento.

A los caballos hay que respetarlos y nunca tendremos una respuesta agresiva. ¿Cuánto tiempo se tarda en conocer a un caballo?

Eso depende de cada uno. La enseñanza de un caballo se basa en la repetición, hay que tener constancia y repertir la orden muchas veces, hay que hablar lo estrictamente necesario. Una vez que el animal graba las señales enviadas no las olvidará jamás. Por eso no se debe “castigar” a un caballo simplemente corregirle. Tienes que ganarte su confianza y sobre todo que no te tenga miedo, para no despertar su instinto de protección. Una vez superado el miedo es el animal más noble. ¿Cuánto se tarda en preparar un caballo de competición?

Depende de muchos factores pero no hay ningún caballo que llegue a una olimpiada con menos de 10 años de adiestramiento. ¿Te queda algún sueño por cumplir?

Si algo me queda por hacer es lo mucho que me queda por aprender, el que más sabe es el que sabe que todavía no sabe nada.

Si tuvieras la oportunidad de volver al pasado, ¿cambiarías algo?

No cambiaría nada, quizás intentaría modificar los errores que he cometido sin darme cuenta.

La parte que más me gusta es el adiestramiento del caballo.

How can we relate a horse with a man?

In his ability to be always ready to collaborate. The horse is not resentful, but he has a really good memory, he never forgets that’s why we must be very careful with the treatment as well as procedures.

If you had not engaged in this field, what profession would you feel attracted by?

My other passion which I had to leave a little relegated is music.

I come from a family of musicians and that small experience with music allowed me to develop what I am today, it was my means of support.

Horses must be respected and they’ll never have an aggressive response.

How long does it take to meet a horse?

That depends on each. Teaching a horse is based on repetition, you must be persistent and repeat the order on and on and speak strictly what is necessary. Once the animal records the signals sent, it won’t ever forget them. That is the reason why a horse should not be “punished” but corrected. You have to earn his trust and above all he should not be afraid of you in order to avoid the awakening of his protective instinct. Once fear is overcome he is the noblest animal.

How long does it take to prepare a horse race?

It depends on many factors but any horse requires at least 10 years of training to reach the Olympics.

Do you have any dream to be achieved?

If there is still something left to do is the many things I have to learn, the person who knows the most is the one who knows nothing yet.

If you had the chance to go back in time, would you change anything?

I wouldn’t change anything, perhaps I would rectify the mistakes I’ve made inadvertently.

¿Cuándo decide venir a RD? Estuve viviendo muchos años en Costa Rica y finalmente me trasladé a vivir aquí hace diez años. Desde hacía mucho tiempo venía regularmente con mis alumnos a competir, por lo que ya sentía un vínculo muy importante . ¿Qué echa de menos de su país?

Echo de menos a mi familia, mis hijos… a mi patria. Pero me siento muy cómodo aquí . ¿Qué destacaría del carácter dominicano?

El dominicano es tremendamente hospitalario. Los que venimos de fuera estamos aquí tranquilamente sin que nadie nos moleste.

Profesionalmente estar en Punta Cana es un premio a tantos años de trabajo. Aquí disfruto de la vida, de mi profesión, de un clima maravilloso, del apoyo de la gente que viene a montar y de un mundo de altas competencias.

Toda la vida dedicada al mundo del caballo y rodeado de los mejores…

Tuve la gran fortuna de poder recibir la ayuda de grandes profesores, aunque unos transcendieron más que otros.

I miss my family, my children ... my homeland. But I feel very comfortable here.

Concón

El quemadito dominicano antos lánguidos, plagados de sentimiento y profunda nostalgia acompañaban la interminable travesía.

Pero esos navíos que cruzaron el Atlántico cargados de esclavos, no solo transportaron al nuevo continente mano de obra para las minas y plantaciones; sus cubiertas iban repletas de una riquísima tradición culinaria.

En las oscuras bodegas trajeron a América el ñame, el plátano, la sandía, el guandul, la malagueta o la yautía; las antiguas recetas, la manera de preparar los alimentos, de combinarlos, utensilios de cocina y la forma de llamar a los platos. Una influencia tan importante que inició la segunda gran fusión alimentaria dominicana; una huella que ha llegado hasta nuestros días.

Todavía hoy, las coincidencias entre la cocina del oeste de África y la dominicana son apabullantes. La salsa ata yoruba es muy cercana a los escabeches y sofritos hispanos. El mofongo, ese plátano frito al que se añaden trozos de chicharrón, proviene del vocablo de Cabo Verde cufongo, que significa “bola de maiz”. El chenchén encuentra sus antepasados en el sadza o el nshima, y el sancocho (a pesar de su herencia española) también tiene sus versiones en el calalú africano (aunque su color sea verde). Hasta los bollitos que se echan dentro tienen conexiones con el banku.

El concón, ese arroz “pegao” al fondo del caldero, no podía ser menos y está igual de quemadito que en Nigeria (hasta lo llaman konkón).

Servido con habichuelas y salsita de carne, su intenso sabor vuelve loco a los dominicanos. Pero -como los yanikekes, el cazabe o el picapollo- es su característica crujiente la que desata más pasiones.

No olvide que el concón perfecto ha cumplir tres premisas: tiene que estar bien crujiente, formar una capa fina y lucir un bonito color dorado, no quemado. Si sale del caldero entero, con forma de sombrerito, entonces ya es de campeonato.

A pesar del mal favor que han hecho las populares ollas arroceras al concón, hemos querido darle otra magnitud. Tres recetas en las que el conconcito caribeño adquiere otra dimensión.

ownhearted songs, riddle with deep nostalgia and feeling had accompanied the endless journey. BlINIS DE CONCóN, MORCIllA Y CAMARONES BlINIS OF CONCON, BlOOD PUDDING AND SHRIMP UTIlIZAREMOS Para los blinis: ½ taza de leche, 1 cucharada de levadura, ½ taza cerveza, 1 yema, 1 taza harina, pizca de sal, 1 taza concón desmenuzado, 1 clara de huevo, 2 cucharadas de mantequilla.

Para la morcilla: 2 cucharadas de aceite, ½ cebolla picada, 1 morcilla, 3 cucharadas de concón, 2 huevos, sal, pimienta molida, 2 cucharadas puerro fino picado.

Para los camarones: 8 camarones grandes, gotas de aceite, sal.

WE WIll USE For the blinis: ½ cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of yeast, ½ cup of beer, 1 egg, 1 cup of flour, a pinch of salt, 1 cup of shredded concón, 1 egg white, 2 tablespoons of butter.

For the blood pudding: 2 tablespoons of oil, ½ chopped onion, 1 blood pudding, 3 tablespoons of concón, 2 eggs, salt, ground pepper, 2 tablespoons of fine chopped leek.

For shrimps: 8 large shrimps, drops of oil, salt.

DIRECTIONS

Para los blinis: templamos la leche y añadimos la levadura.

Incorporamos la harina, cerveza, yema de huevo y sal. Mezclamos bien hasta tener una mezcla homogénea. Dejamos reposar durante una hora. Agregamos el concón desmenuzado y la clara batida a punto de nieve. Calentamos una sartén untada en mantequilla y cocemos los blinis por ambas caras.

Para la morcilla: en una sartén con aceite rehogamos la cebolla. Cuando esté blanda añadimos la morcilla picada, el concón y los huevos batidos. Salpimentamos y trabajamos como un revuelto. Fuera del fuego condimentamos con puerro fino picado.

Para los camarones: en una sartén con gotas de aceite cocemos los camarones por ambos lados. Salamos fuera del fuego.

For blinis: warm milk up and add yeast. Add the flour, beer, egg yolk and salt. Stir well until getting a smooth mixture. Let rest for one hour. Add the shredded Concón and beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Heat a pan greased with butter and cook the blinis on both sides.

For shrimp: cook the shrimp on both sides in a pan with some drops of oil. Salt them out of the fire.

In this order, put the blinis in the dinner plate, then the scrambled blood pudding on the blini and finally the shrimps. Dress lightly with oil of fine herbs.

En el plato de servicio colocamos el blinis, sobre este el revuelto de morcilla y terminamos con los camarones. Aliñamos ligeramente con un aceite de finas hierbas.

CERDO lACADO CON CONCóN Y HABICHUElAS lACQUERED PORK WITH GREEN BEANS AND CONCON

UTIlIZAREMOS Para el cerdo: 2 lb carne de cerdo a tacos, ¼ taza de salsa de soja, 1 cucharada de azúcar, 1 cucharada de miel, 1 diente de ajo picado, pizca nuez moscada, pizca de clavo, pizca de canela, pizca de jengibre, sal y pimienta, 2 cucharadas de aceite, 2 cucharada de mantequilla.

Para el concón: 3 tazas de concón desmenuzado, 4 cucharadas clara de huevo, 1 diente de ajo picado, pizca nuez moscada, pizca de clavo, sal y pimienta, 4 cucharadas de aceite.

Para el puré: 3 cucharadas mantequilla, 1 puerro picado, 1 tallo de apio, 2 dientes de ajo, 2 tazas habichuelas rojas cocidas, sal y pimienta. lO HAREMOS ASÍ Para el cerdo: juntamos en un bol la soja, azúcar, miel, ajo y especias. Salpimentamos y añadimos el cerdo. Removemos bien y dejamos marinar por 2 horas. Escurrimos bien el cerdo y reservamos la marinada. En un cazo ponemos a reducir la marinada hasta que empiece a espesar. En una sartén con gotas de aceite salteamos el cerdo, cuando esté cocido le añadimos la marinada y continuamos salteando para que se impregne bien. Fuera del fuego añadimos la mantequilla.

Para el concón: juntamos todos los ingredientes en un bol y mezclamos bien. Formamos tortitas y cocemos en un sartén con gotas de aceite.

Para el puré: picamos todas las hortalizas y el ajo. En una sartén con mantequilla rehogamos las hortalizas y el ajo hasta que estén blandos.

Añadimos las habichuelas y salteamos por 10 minutos. Salpimentamos y hacemos puré con procesadora.

Drain the pork and reserve the marinade. Put the marinade in a pot to reduce it until getting thicker. Sauté pork in a fry pan with some drops of oil, once it cooked add the marinade and continue sautéing to become tasty. Remove from the heat to add the butter.

For concón: put together all ingredients in a bowl and stir well. Give the shape of pancakes and cook in a pan with some drops of oil.

For puree: chop all vegetables and garlic. In a pan greased of butter sauté vegetables and garlic until tender. Add the green beans and sauté for 10 minutes.

Season and make puree using a food processor.

UTIlIZAREMOS

WE WIll USE

Para las barritas: 1 taza concón desmenuzado, ½ taza nueces, ¼ taza de pasas, 5 cucharadas de hojuelas de maíz, 3 cucharadas ajonjolí negro, 2 cucharaditas canela en polvo, 1 cucharada extracto de vainilla, 3/4 taza de miel, 2 cucharadas aceite, 2 cucharadas de agua.

Para el frosting: 2/3 tazas de mantequilla, 1 ¾ tazas azúcar glass, 1 cucharada de extracto de vainilla, 2 cucharadas de leche.

Helado de fresas, fresas picadas.

For sticks: 1 cup of shredded concón, ½ cup of nuts, ¼ cup of raisins, 5 tablespoons of corn flakes, 3 tablespoons of black sesame seeds, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 3/4 cup of honey, 2 tablespoons of oil, 2 tablespoons of water.

For frosting: 2/3 cup of butter, 1 ¾ cups of sugar glass, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 2 tablespoons of milk.

Para las barritas: en un bol juntamos el concón, las nueces, las pasas, las hojuelas de maíz, el ajonjolí y la canela. Mezclamos bien. En un caldero juntamos la vainilla, la miel, el aceite y el agua. Calentamos hasta que los ingredientes se integren y lo incorporamos con la mezcla de concón. Removemos bien y extendemos en placa de horno untada de aceite. Compactamos y horneamos a 320ºF por 25 minutos. Sacamos del horno y una vez frías cortamos.

Para el frosting: en un bol juntar la mantequilla a temperatura ambiente con los demás ingredientes. Batir por un minuto a velocidad baja y por 5 minutos a velocidad fuerte para que espume y quede cremoso.

Sobre la barrita de concón colocamos una capa de frosting, las fresas picadas y terminamos con el helado de fresas.

AVENTURA/adventure a oferta hotelera en la República Dominicana está fuertemente establecida, sobre todo en las costas, pero existen otros destinos interesantes que pueden marcarte para siempre. No andaré más por las ramas, hablamos del Treehouse Village.

Se trata de un conjunto de cabañas de madera y cana, muy acogedoras que se encuentran dispersas en un precioso valle tropical.

Hay disponibles unas 20 habitaciones, cubiertas, pero sin paredes, solo unas balconadas adornadas con bellas cortinas combinando el color marrón y naranja. Se accede por unas escaleras de madera, o por unas rampas por las laderas del valle. Muy bien pensado.

La llegada La aventura comienza bastante antes de llegar. Tienes que ubicarte en Santa Bárbara de Samaná, y localizar un cartel que indica “El Valle”, yendo hacia Las Galeras, pero al principio de esa carretera.

El asfalto desaparece de las ruedas bien pronto, hay buena pista de caliche, pero luego comprobarás que es un acierto haber elegido un 4x4 para viajar (muy recomendable). Tras el bello entorno del embalse se encuentra una bajada pedregosa, y abajo a la derecha un parking señalizado.

Pero aún sigue la aventura. Hay que caminar por el cauce del río unos minutos, sin más referencia que la jungla, que se va espesando.

Saltar por algunas piedras para salvar un pequeño cauce y cruzar un puente colgante de cuerdas y maderas.

la pandemia del siglo The pandemic of the century

n la actualidad la diabetes mellitus es considerada como la pandemia del siglo, en el mundo hay más de 347 millones de personas afectadas por esta enfermedad.

La diabetes es una enfermedad crónica, sistémica que aparece cuando el páncreas no produce insulina o cuando el organismo no utiliza eficazmente la insulina producida. La insulina es una hormona que regula el azúcar en la sangre y el déficit absoluto o relativo de esta provoca la hiperglucemia (aumento de azúcar en sangre) que con el tiempo daña órganos y sistemas, especialmente nervios y vasos sanguíneos.

Existen diferentes factores de riesgo: edad avanzada, obesidad, antecedentes familiares, raza, estilo de vida (obesidad e inactividad física), bajo peso al nacer…

La Diabetes se clasifica en 4 grupos: Diabetes mellitus tipo 1, aparece antes de los 30 años. Se caracteriza por un déficit absoluto de insulina donde existe una destrucción total de las células que la producen y requiere la administración diaria de esta hormona por parte del paciente. Sus síntomas consisten, entre otros, en excreción excesiva de orina (poliuria), sed (polidipsia), hambre constante (polifagia), pérdida de peso, trastornos visuales y cansancio. Estos síntomas pueden aparecer de forma súbita.

Diabetes mellitus tipo 2, suele aparecer en la edad adulta, se debe a una utilización ineficaz de la insulina. Este tipo representa el 90% de los casos mundiales y se debe en gran medida a un peso corporal excesivo y a la inactividad física.

Este tipo de diabetes puede requerir tanto la administración de insulina como la utilización de medicamentos orales dependiendo del grado de control metabólico del paciente. Los síntomas pueden ser similares a los de la diabetes de tipo 1, pero a menudo menos intensos.

Diabetes gestacional, se presenta durante el embarazo y en esos casos el bebé nace con un peso mayor a 7 libras (macrosomía).

La prevención de la DM2, la cual representa el 90% de los casos mundiales, está basada en los cambios en el estilo de vida e incluye disminución de peso, realización de actividad física, evitar el consumo de tabaco y comer saludablemente incluyendo en el día de 3-5 porciones de frutas y hortalizas y una cantidad reducida de azúcar y grasas saturadas. Estas estrategias encaminadas a la prevención de la enfermedad resultan muy efectivas para intentar atajar una de las grandes epidemias del siglo XXI.

Diabetes mellitus type 2, often occurs in adults but can appear at early ages of life, it is due to inefficient use of insulin. This type represents the 90% of global cases and is largely due to excessive body weight and physical inactivity. This type of diabetes can require either insulin administration or the use of oral medications depending on the degree of metabolic control of the patient. The symptoms may be similar to type 1 diabetes, but often less intense.

Gestational diabetes, occurs during pregnancy and one characteristic that shows that the mother developed diabetes during pregnancy is macrosomia (birth weight of more than 7 pounds).

Prevention of DM2, which accounts for 90% of global cases, is based on changes in lifestyle and includes weight loss, practice of physical activity for at least, avoidance of tobacco consumption and to have healthy food like 3-5 daily servings of fruits and vegetables and a small amount of sugar and saturated fat. Síndrome de Ulises

En tierras lejanas n los últimos años y debido a los cambios producidos en las economías mundiales ha crecido el número de personas que han salido de sus países en busca de oportunidades profesionales, muchas de ellas percibiendo esta situación como su única salida y como algo completamente nuevo para ellos y su entorno.

El fenómeno de la migración no es algo nuevo, a lo largo de la historia la humanidad ha vivido procesos de flujos migratorios especialmente intensos por diversos motivos que han marcado nuestro proceso evolutivo y han evidenciado nuestra tremenda capacidad de adaptación.

La experiencia de emigrar, como todo cambio importante en la vida, supone para el individuo un alto nivel de estrés que no siempre se encuentra en condiciones de manejar de forma correcta. La separación de sus seres queridos (con culpabilidad por haberlos abandonado), la sensación de desarraigo, el sentimiento de pérdida de gran parte de su propia identidad, la sensación de “ser nadie”, de no encontrar el lugar adecuado, los sentimientos de tristeza, soledad, añoranza, etc… Todos estos sentimientos hacen que en ocasiones la persona se encuentre inmersa en una tormenta emocional que la lleva a un intenso vacío y si persiste en el tiempo genera diversos trastornos psicosomáticos denominados síndrome de Ulises.

Las condiciones y motivaciones por las que cada persona decide o se ve obligada a salir de su lugar de origen son diferentes, algunas personas lo hacen en condiciones extremas y por ello sus dificultades son mayores, pero la intensidad con la que se vive la experiencia es totalmente individual.

Frecuentes cambios de humor, tensión, irritación, culpa, llanto, dolor de estómago, falta o exceso de apetito, dolor de cabeza, son algunos de los síntomas del síndrome de Ulises.

Este síndrome como muchos otros trastornos de origen emocional no es tenido en cuenta como algo importante fundamentalmente por su desconocimiento. En la mayor parte de las ocasiones el entorno de la persona no es lo suficientemente sensible como para entender su situación y añade una carga emocional adicional de culpa a quién lo padece al recriminarle su actitud ante su nueva situación. Lo ideal sería poder entender que la persona está sufriendo e ir ayudándola a que poco a poco vaya elaborando su duelo y comprendiendo que en esencia, sigue siendo la misma persona.

La vida familiar se resiente especialmente en estas situaciones, los integrantes de la misma suelen llevar ritmos diferentes en cuanto a su capacidad de adaptación, a veces unos siguen en su mundo “pasado” mientras que otros ya se han incorporado al “nuevo”, o incluso algunos siguen entre los “dos” mundos, pensando que abrir la puerta al “nuevo” es una forma de cerrar el anterior y por tanto dejarlo marchar. Que todos los integrantes de la familia respeten con cariño y paciencia el ritmo individual es la clave para la armonía y adaptación de todos.

Nuestra mente dirige nuestros sentimientos, por ello es bueno enseñarla que no olvide que la esencia de cada ser humano es la misma esté donde esté.

n recent years, the number of people that has left their countries in search of career opportunities has increased due to changes in global economies. Many of them have perceived this situation as the only way out, completely new to them and their environment.

The phenomenon of migration is not new. Throughout history mankind has lived processes of migratory flows particularly intense for various reasons which have shaped our evolutionary process and have demonstrated our tremendous capacity to adapt.

The experience of emigration, like any major life change, produces a high level of stress in the individual who is not always able to handle it properly. Separation from the loved ones (with guilt for having abandoned them), the feelings of rootlessness, loss of their own identity, “being nobody”, failing to find the right place, feelings of sadness, loneliness, longing, among others ... All these together sometimes make the person to be absorbed in an emotional storm leading to a profound emptiness and if it persists over time it causes various psychosomatic disorders called Ulysses syndrome.

Conditions and motivations that make each person to decide or force them to leave the place of origin are different. Some people do it in extreme conditions and thus their difficulties are greater, but the intensity resulting from the experience is completely individual.

Mood swings, tension, irritability, guilt, crying, stomach ache, lack or excess of appetite, headache are some of symptoms of Ulysses syndrome.

This syndrome like many other disorders emotionally originated, is not considered significant mainly due to ignorance. In the majority of cases the environment is not sensitive enough to understand the person-situation and adds an additional motional burden of guilt to those who suffers by reproaching his or her attitude in view of the new situation. It would be ideal to understand that the person is suffering and should be gradually helped to develop his or her grief and to recognize that he or she is still the same person.

Family life suffers the effects of these situations, members usually keep different paces in their adaptability, sometimes some of them remain in the “past” while others have already joined the “new world” or even some live between the “two” worlds, thinking that to open the “new world” door represents to leave the past behind and let it go therefore. The key to harmony and adaptation of everyone is that family members show respect to each individual pace with love and patience.

Our mind controls our feelings and for that reason it is good to order it to remember that the essence of every human being is the same wherever he or she is. bacana 65

BIODIVERSIDAD

¿Qué le ocurre? altan muchas especies por identificar, pero la biodiversidad declina más rápido que nunca. Los hábitats naturales disminuyen ante el acelerado crecimiento de la población humana, de seguir así, un gran porcentaje de especies podría desaparecer en los próximos años.

República Dominicana tiene una gran riqueza animal que no debemos dejar de proteger. Parece que la naturaleza nos ha concedido una oportunidad única, ciertas especies como el coral cuerno de ciervo están resurgiendo de lo que era una muerte inminente. Nuestras playas necesitan a este importante coral para tener un equiibrio.

El cambio climático es un factor importante en la destrucción de estas especies pero el mayor destructor es, sin duda: la raza humana.

EDUCAR EN BENEFICIO DE TODOS Un pequeño sector de la población ya entiende que necesitamos de cada una de estas especies para mantener el equilibrio natural de nuestra zona, pero aún queda mucho por hacer.

Diferentes especies de tortugas llegan a nuestras playas: desde Miches hasta Cabo Engaño y por la zona Sur desde Bahía de Neiba hasta Pedernales. Prácticas como la pesca intensiva, la recolección de huevos y el crecimiento de las urbes han acelerado su desaparición.

No podemos dejar de mencionar al arácnido más común de nuestro entorno: la cacata. Su nombre científico es phornictopues cancerides y aquí se encuentra en peligro de extinción, en determinados países como Brasil es una especie protegida. Las hembras pueden vivir hasta 20 años y su estrategia de caza es muy estudiada por su efectividad.

El gavilán de la Hispaniola majestuosa ave rapaz endémica de la isla también se encuentra en peligro de extinción. Es un gran honor visualizar los pocos ejemplares que existen y es nuestro deber protegerla para su pronta recuperación.

El pez loro tiene un papel fundamental en el ecosistema marino, con su pico de loro controla el crecimiento excesivo de algas sobre los corales y ayuda a que nuestras playas tengan esa arena blanca tan maravillosa, como resultado de su proceso digestivo.

Debemos tomar conciencia y preservar este legado natural, todos nos necesitamos, desde el insecto más diminuto hasta la ballena más grande dependen de nosotros y viceversa. Somos unos privilegiados por vivir en uno de los lugares dónde la biodiversidad ha declinado menos, es nuestro deber educar a las generaciones venideras a conservar lo que tenemos. Somos sensibles a los cambios pero sabemos que podemos adaptarnos.

What happens? any species are not identified yet, but biodiversity declines faster than ever. Natural habitats decrease before rapid human population growth, if continues, a large percentage of species could disappear in the following years.

Dominican Republic has a great animal wealth we must not fail to protect. It seems that nature has given us a unique opportunity; certain species such as the deer antler coral are bouncing back from what was an imminent death. Our beaches need this important coral to have a balance.

Climate change is an important factor in the destruction of these species but the greater destroyer is undoubtedly: the human race.

EDUCATING TO BENEFIT ALL A small sector of the population understands what we need from each of these species to maintain the natural balance of our area, but there is still a lot to be done.

Different species of turtles come to our beaches, from Miches to Cabo Engaño and in the South area from Neiba Bay to Pedernales. Practices as intensive fishing, gathering eggs and cities growth have accelerated their extinction.

We can forget to mention the most common spider in our area: the cacata. Its scientific name is phormictopus cancerides and here it is an endangered species but in some countries like Brazil is a protected species. Females can live up to 20 years and their hunting strategy is studied due to its effectiveness.

The hawk of Hispaniola island, a majestic endemic bird of prey is also endangered. It is a great honour to see the few specimens that exist and it‘s our duty to protect them for their speedy recovery.

Parrotfish has a key role in the marine ecosystem, with its parrot beak controls the excessive growth of algae on corals and helps our beaches to have that wonderful white sand, as a result of its digestive process.

We must become aware of and preserve this natural heritage, we need each other, from the smallest insect to the largest whale depend on us and vice versa. We have the privilege to live in one of the places where biodiversity has declined less, it is our duty to educate future generations to preserve what we have. We are sensitive to changes but we know we can adapt ourselves.

unta Cana se mantiene como el destino turístico más importante de la región y más de la mitad de los viajeros que llegan al país vienen por su aeropuerto.

El desarrollo que ha alcanzado la región del Este tiene un impacto en la economía nacional extraordinario.

El Banco Central ha publicado un informe que señala que nuestro país va atravesando los tiempos de vacas gordas y que cada vez son más las personas que vienen a disfrutar de nuestras playas, las bellezas de nuestro paisaje y el candor de nuestra gente. Así las cosas, por los aeropuertos de nuestro país, solo en enero de 2015 pasaron casi medio millón de viajeros, esto es un 7.5% más que el año pasado.

Además se destaca el crecimiento sostenido en la llegada de turistas se está convirtiendo en una tendencia, pues el país viene registrando tasas de crecimiento interanuales en los últimos 16 meses que promedian un 10%.

Otro dato interesante que puede servir de mucho a las empresas turísticas es que más de la mitad de los viajeros que llegan a nuestro país son menores de 35 años, lo que nos convierte en un destino que ofrece muchas atracciones para los jóvenes. Pero como no todo en la vida es parranda, los mayores también han encontrado una oportunidad para pasar unas vacaciones tranquilas, así que el 23% de todos los turistas son personas de más de 50 años.

Son muchos los factores que han influido para que el turismo esté disfrutando de esta “belle epoque”. Uno de ellos es el efecto combinado de la recuperación de la economía norteamericana como principal mercado emisor y a las labores de promoción implementadas por el Ministerio de Turismo y el sector privado con el fin de posicionar al país como el destino preferencial del Caribe.

A menudo se dice que cuando Estados Unidos estornuda, a América Latina le da gripe. En palabras llanas significa que si a ellos les va bien, a nosotros mejor. Y esto se refl eja en el turismo pues resulta que del total de turistas durante el 2014, más de

It is often said that when America sneezes, Latin America gets the flu. In simple words it means if they do well, we’ll do better. This is showed in tourism because the total number of tourists during 2014, more than half, was from North America and more than 700 000 came from the United States.

Precisamente a principios de este año, el Grupo Punta Cana inauguró la nueva terminal aérea . Se estima que con esta apertura, el aeropuerto está en capacidad de recibir hasta 1.5 millones de visitantes adicionales al año así como generar unos 1500 empleos directos.

l estrés y la ansiedad son una constante en nuestro día a día. El trabajo, la casa, la familia,… son preocupaciones cotidianas que afectan a nuestro cuerpo y a nuestra mente, pero existen maneras de combatirlos.

Una de ellas es el yoga, una disciplina física y mental nacida en la India asociada a la meditación en el hinduismo, el budismo y el jainismo.

El yoga se considera una disciplina porque cultiva el cuerpo, la mente y el alma. Los hinduistas señalan que el ser humano es un alma encerrada en un cuerpo, formado por varias partes: cuerpo físico, mente, inteligencia y ego falso. Su manera de evolucionar es a través de la autodisciplina.

La respiración y la concentración son las claves del yoga. Para conseguir el equilibrio entre ellas se utilizarán una serie de posturas, denominadas asanas, que lograrán el bienestar físico y mental del practicante.

Estas posturas variarán según el tipo de yoga que se realice en función de los objetivos que se persigan.

DIFERENTES TIPOS Así, podemos hablar de varios tipos fundamentales de yoga como son el Raya-yoga o Ashtanga yoga, cuyo fundador fue el escritor indio Patanyali en cuyo libro Yoga Sutra (el más antiguo sobre esta disciplina) habla de la adhesión a ocho preceptos que constituyen el ashta-anga yoga y que son: iama (prohibiciones), niiama (preceptos), asana (postura), pranaiama (control de la respiración), pratiajara (poco comer), dhara-

Work, home, family ... are everyday concerns affecting our body and mind, but there are ways to get rid of them. One is yoga, a physical and mental discipline originated in India related to meditation in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Yoga is considered a discipline that cultivates body, mind and spirit.

Hindus explain that human being is a spirit inside a body made up of several parts: physical body, mind, intelligence and false ego. Your way to evolve is through self-discipline.

Breathing and concentration are keys to yoga. To achieve the balance between them, series of poses called asanas will be used to get the practitioner’s physical and mental welfare. These poses will vary depending on the type of yoga performed according to the goals pursued.

DIFFERENT TYPES In this sense, we can talk about several basic types of yoga such as Raja Yoga or Ashtanga yoga, whose founder was the Indian writer Patanjali, author of the book Yoga Sutra (the oldest on this subject) which includes joining the eight limbs that constitute the ashta anga-yoga such as: yama (prohibitions), niyama (precepts), asana (pose), Pranayama (breath con-

Otros tipos son el Gñana yoga, que se refiere al aprendizaje y a la intuición y el Karma yoga o yoga de la acción o del servicio, que libera el alma.

Pero existen otras escuelas que no se consideran fundamentales, aunque entre ellas está el yoga más conocido por sus asanas, cuyo objetivo es que el cuerpo esté preparado para la meditación. Se trata del Hatha yoga. También está el Bhakti yoga (yoga devocional); Kriyá yoga (forma práctica del yoga); Kundaliní yoga; Japa yoga o yoga con mantras; Tantra yoga; Yoga Kundalini (actúa sobre los chakras), entre otros.

BENEFICIOS ¿Qué me aporta esta disciplina? El yoga busca la serenidad física y mental. Así, entre sus beneficios físicos se encuentran un aumento de la flexibilidad, la fortaleza, la resistencia o la energía. Por su parte, entre los mentales están la estabilidad emocional, la concentración o la paz.

También se obtienen beneficios espirituales tales como la calma, la sabiduría o la integración.

A QUIÉN VA DIRIGIDO En cuanto a la pregunta sobre quién puede practicar yoga la respuesta es muy sencilla: cualquier persona interesada, ya que es una práctica que se adapta a las necesidades de cada uno. Por ello hay yoga para adultos, tercera edad, diabéticos, embarazadas o niños. Estos últimos también padecen estrés y el yoga les aporta importantes beneficios.

Se aconseja su práctica a partir de los cuatro años y lo primero que hay que enseñarles es a controlar la respiración, relajarse y concentrarse.

Hay que plantearles las posturas como un juego y tener paciencia porque sólo así se les motivará y se conseguirán beneficios como aumentar su talento y creatividad, su forma de relacionarse o su autocontrol.

Además, aumentarán su flexibilidad, agilidad, autoestima, su memoria e imaginación.

En cuanto a las embarazadas les ayuda a respirar de manera correcta y a relajarse, lo que les ayudará en el parto. En este caso, el más adecuado es el Hatha yoga y las posturas de loto, del águila, del bebé o del gato, aunque variarán según el período del embarazo.

Al tratarse de una disciplina que evoluciona constantemente podemos encontrar otros tipos de yoga, como el de la risa (ayuda a liberar tensiones), el aéreo, el del baile, el específico para runners, el power yoga, el terapéutico (para dolencias de espalda y columna) o el que se practica para adelgazar. Con todos se pierde peso, aunque ahora la moda es el hot yoga, realizado con altas temperaturas. También están el vinyasa yoga y el yoga flow, que son más aeróbicos. Además de quemar calorías el secreto está en que se controla la salud mental y disminuye la ansiedad.

PRINCIPIANTES Si quiere iniciarse en la práctica del yoga puede seguir algunos de estos consejos: elegir un estilo de ritmo lento como el hatha yoga o el yin yoga; practicarlo con regularidad (se aconseja de una a seis veces por semana en sesiones de 15 a 90 minutos); con ropa cómoda, en un espacio despejado y tranquilo, con una esterilla, descalzo o en calcetines. Se recomienda hacerlo con el estómago vacío e hidratarse antes y después de su práctica. Es muy importante un calentamiento previo y una respiración profunda.

Ya no hay excusa para no lograr un equilibrio entre cuerpo y mente. El yoga está al alcance de todos y su práctica garantiza concentración y bienestar.

It is advisable to practice it as of age four and the first thing they must learn is breathing control, relaxation and concentration. They must see poses as a game and we must be patient because it is the only way to keep them motivated and get the desirable benefits as to increase their talent and creativity, their way to interact or self-control. In addition, they will increase flexibility, agility, self-esteem, memory and imagination.

omo nadador ultradistancia Marcos Díaz supo que lo único que hace falta para cambiar las cosas es la voluntad, hoy aplica esa misma filosofía como viceministro de deportes.

Hace cinco años el nadador de ultradistancia se propuso llamar la atención de los líderes mundiales para concienciarles sobre las metas pendientes en la consecución del plan propuesto por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas llamado “Los objetivos del milenio”. Un plan para mejorar la calidad de vida y reducir, para este 2015, la pobreza en todos sus países miembros.

En 2010 Marcos Díaz ya tenía un puñado de récords bajo el brazo. Había cruzado el Canal de la Mancha; también logró cruzar -dos veces- el Estrecho de Gibraltar; en el 2006, competencia en las tormentosas aguas del río Bhagirathi en la India donde obtuvo el primer lugar; en el 2007, dos vueltas completas a la isla de Manhattan, en Nueva York y era reconocido como uno de los mejores nadadores de ultra distancia en aguas abiertas en todo el mundo.

“Todo empezó porque me invitaron a Juan Dolio a dar una charla junto a Juan Luis Guerra, para que unos jóvenes que simulaban los modelos de Naciones Unidas conocieran lo que eran los objetivos del milenio. Le pregunté a cada uno de mis familiares y nadie sabía qué era eso de los objetivos del milenio... bueno, tuve que ponerme a investigar para cumplir, señores cuando vi esto me engranujé ante la importancia que tiene este tema para la humanidad y de inmediato me involucré.”

La tarea no fue nada fácil. Había que trazar las rutas del recorrido y conseguir el apoyo económico necesario, pues aunque tenía el aval de la ONU no contaba con apoyo financiero. Sin embargo gracias a la trayectoria y la buena reputación de Díaz los recursos necesarios llegaron.

Con todo listo, Marcos nadó por todo el mundo en cuatro etapas. En la primera etapa logró unir Oceanía con Asia, desde Papúa Nueva Guinea hasta Indonesia con un recorrido de más de 19 kilómetros. En la segunda etapa, marcó un hito histórico conectando Asia con África desde las costas de Jordania hasta Egipto, una travesía nunca antes realizada. La tercera fase ya la había realizado anteriormente, cruzar a nado el Estrecho de Gibraltar para unir África con Europa.

EL mayor desafío fue haber cruzado el estrecho de Bering.

“Ya estaba preparado tras nadar durante varias horas en una piscina llena de cubos de hielo: uní Asia con América salvando el Estrecho de Bering, con aguas bajo temperaturas de dos grados Celsius. Salí de la Isla de Diomede, en Rusia, hasta Little Diomede, en Alaska, en una hora y cinco minutos. Fue el nado más difícil de mi vida”.

Todos los sacrificios tuvieron su recompensa en septiembre de 2010 cuando Díaz le entregó al mismísimo Secretario General de la ONU Ban Ki-moon un libro con la firma de más de 200 mil personas que se unieron a su causa en urgir el cumplimiento de los objetivos. “Cuando me entrevisté con el señor Ki-moon le dije que si un hombre había logrado nadar de un continente a otro, en realidad no estábamos tan lejos

“Everything started because I was invited to Juan Dolio to give a talk together with Juan Luis Guerra to some young people, who simulating the UN models, knew what the millennium goals were. I asked each of my family members and no one knew what was that of the Millennium Goals ... well, I had to do some research to carry out this task, and gentlemen when I saw this I was surprised about the importance of this issue for humanity and I got involved right away. “ The task was not easy. You had to plan the travel routes and get the necessary financial support, because although I was still supported by the UN, the financial support was missing.

However, Díaz was provided with resources thanks to his experience and reputation.

By having everything ready, Marcos swam across the world in four stages. In the first stage he managed to unite Oceania to Asia, from Papua New Guinea to Indonesia, a trip around of over 19 kilometers. In the second stage, he marked a milestone in history by connecting Asia with Africa from the coast of Jordan to Egypt, a journey never undertaken before.

The third phase had already done previously, to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar to join Africa with Europe.

The biggest challenge was to cross the Bering Strait. “I was prepared after swimming in a pool filled with ice cubes for several hours: I joined Asia and Latin overcoming the Bering Strait, with water having temperatures of two degrees. I left Diomede Island in Russia until Little Diomede, Alaska, in an hour and fi ve minutes. It was the most difficult swimming of my life “.

All sacrifices were rewarded in September 2010 when Diaz gave to the very UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon a book with the signing of more than 200 thousand people who joined to this cause to comply with the goals urgently. “When I met with Mr. Ki-moon I told him if a man had managed to swim from one continent to another, actually we were not so far from each other”.

The determination of Marcos Diaz is far from being a coincidence. As a child he was asthmatic and his doctor advised his parents to enroll him in swimming lessons. He wanted to quit swimming in several occasions, but his parents knew bacana 77

Esto sin duda permitió que él haya sido una de las pocas personas que logra vivir de un deporte (que no sea béisbol) durante tantos años. En 2011 anuncia oficialmente que se retira como deportista profesional.

Marcos Díaz estudió administración de empresas y tiene una maestría en mercadeo. En 2013 a Marcos Díaz no se le hizo fácil decirle que sí al presidente Danilo Medina cuando le pidió que dirigiera el viceministerio de Deportes Escolar y Universitario. A pesar de que nunca había pensado involucrarse en la política vio en este ofrecimiento una oportunidad para poder emprender las acciones que él mismo había demandado cuando era deportista.

“Cuando sopesamos la idea, analizamos los riesgos y vimos que eran muchos, entonces le pregunté a mi equipo ¿Hay alguna diferencia de cuando yo renuncié a mi trabajo para hacerme nadador? Y la respuesta fue: ninguna. Todo lo que yo señalé como deportista que estaba mal, desde aquí tengo la oportunidad y la responsabilidad de corregirlo”.

l acto de la bandera es una costumbre cuyos orígenes militares se mantiene en todas las escuelas y colegios del país. Así como en EEUU es también una costumbre, en zonas como Europa es raro ver este tipo de actos fuera del protocolo insitucional o militar.

Aunque el himno se canta y la bandera se iza todos los días a primera hora en los colegios y escuelas del país, solo un día por semana se realiza el acto de la bandera. Este es un momento de mucho respecto para estudiantes, profesores y demás público. Por las mañanas se iza la bandera dominicana y se canta el himno nacional.

Como sucede en la mayoría de los países donde se realiza, la buena educación señala que quien se encuentre presenciando el acto deberá permanecer en posición de firme y guardar el respeto debido a los símbolos nacionales.

El acto de la bandera está establecido, por obligación, dentro de los estatutos del Ministerio de Educación de la República Dominicana, las universidades están exentas de realizarlo pues ellas se rigen por los estatutos del Ministerio de Educación Superior.

El momento en sí, es muy sencillo pero simbólico. En muchos de los colegios izar la bandera es una recompensa a un mérito. Un estudiante que destaque en alguna materia, un grupo de estudiantes deportistas que hayan tenido algún logro importante o alguien que haya puesto en alto el nombre de la institución.

Siempre se celebrará por las mañanas, toda la comunidad estudiantil se reúne organizada en grupos y con mucho respeto se llevan la mano derecha al pecho mientras entonan el himno nacional.

This is a time of much respect for students, teachers and the public. The Dominican flag is hoisted in the morning and the national anthem is sung.

As in most countries, good education states that whoever is witnessing this event must remain at attention and keep respect for national symbols.

This is established, by obligation, within the statutes of the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic, but Universities are exempt from it because they are governed by statutes of the Ministry of Higher Education.

The ceremony as such is very simple but symbolic. In many of the schools to hoist the flag is a reward for merit. This refers to an outstanding student in any subject, a group of student athletes who have had some important achievement or someone who has put up the name of the institution.

It will always be held in the morning, the entire student community gathers in organized groups and puts their right hand on their chest with great respect while singing the national anthem.

La mayoría de los colegios aprovechan este acto para dar avisos importantes, hacer algún reconocimiento o dedicar el acto a alguna celebración cívica, por ejemplo el día del natalicio de Juan Pablo Duarte, el Día de las Culturas o la semana de la patria, previo a la celebración de la independencia.

Hay algunas instituciones que aprovechan estas fechas para hacer verdaderos desfiles de gala. En Santo Domingo se destaca el Colegio Dominicano de La Salle que se prepara durante semanas ensayando marchas de origen militar dedicados a la bandera.

La presentación es el 26 de febrero, los alumnos van impecablemente vestidos con sus uniformes con guantes blancos y hacen en los alrededores de la institución un pequeño desfile.

Participan todos los alumnos de todos los niveles, pero los únicos que llevan la bandera son los que han sido nombrados previamente por su rendimiento académico, es decir, son alumnos de honor.

El respeto a la bandera y al himno son valores que se aprenden desde temprana edad en todo el país.

ORIGIN The GoPro emerged after a journey of its creator to Australia, Nick Woodman, for surfing, one of his passions along with extreme sports. His goal was to take pictures of this sport from inside, what he saw when he was plowing a wave and all this with great quality.

LAS HERO 4 Entre las funciones de las Hero 4 están la de controlar, visualizar y compartir con WI-FI y Bluetooth integrados, la posibilidad de encender y grabar automáticamente gracias al botón QuikCapture, o la de poder marcar, a la vez que se graba, los mejores momentos con Hilight Tag, lo que permite encontrarlos más fácilmente y reproducirlos, editarlos y compartirlos en el menor tiempo posible.
